Starting point is 00:00:00 hello and welcome back to even more news the first and only news podcast my name is katie stole hello katie stole hello welcome to the last and first time i will say i'm grombo flumbus here coming at you hi i'm cody johnson how's it going i like grombo flumbus well that's not my name one thing about cody is that he is really good at coming up with just absurd names on the fly when we were oh thank you so much that was always a thing i remember what we were doing the george lucas list of george lucas yeah it's very fun it's very fun uh small beans but who cares about all that who cares about all that we've got guests to introduce they are comedians who have been performing as the good liars for more than a decade. They are the hosts of the new podcast, The Good Liars Tell the Truth.
Starting point is 00:01:07 It's Jason Selvig and Devram Stiefler. Did I do it right? You did a great job. Yes, that was perfect. Mikey, I got your names right. Yeah, well, my name is actually Grombo Flumpus. Grombo Flumpus? That's why it was in my head.
Starting point is 00:01:23 Remarkable. All right, I take back my compliments to Cody No I liked it so much No it's the truth It's the truth It was a sincere compliment and I meant it Welcome guys You've never been here before
Starting point is 00:01:38 Never I've been in Zoom rooms before Full disclosure You can tell you're doing great I'm really relaxed I've been in Zoom rooms before. Have you? Full disclosure. Yeah. Wow. This is not my first time on a Zoom. You can tell you're doing great. Yeah. Zoom-wise. Really relaxed.
Starting point is 00:01:48 I have not. So if I really screw it up, that's my excuse. Wouldn't have been able to tell. Excellent. Excellent Zooming. I'm still adjusting to Zoom. But I guess I never will. That's perfect.
Starting point is 00:02:00 Just a nice profile. I always get tripped out because it's weird to have your own camera there it's hard to tell when people are making eye contact um and then some people will say like just hide yourself view but then i get self-conscious like but what if there's something on my face and everyone else is seeing it what if you're making a face yeah what if exactly what if i'm making a face anywho we've got some holidays to celebrate. Finally. Always.
Starting point is 00:02:27 Always. Every day. Yeah. March 7th. National Be Heard Day. Okay. Perfect. We're podcasting.
Starting point is 00:02:36 Be Heard? What is your Be Heard? You're a Be Herder? Or you're a Terrifying. I really, really love where you're going with this, but no, not that. But you know what there may be that holiday as well who's to say because i just saw a bee like literal bee herding video today online like somebody like getting bees to go get off and they were putting them in different places like scraping them or did they use like they were scraping them to get the honey and oh yeah yeah yeah and they they were crawling all over the person who was doing it.
Starting point is 00:03:06 They were a bee shepherd. They were a bee shepherd. Bee shepherd. Yeah. Well, this is different. This is a day for small businesses to be heard. You know, in a world typically dominated by big business. Wait, it's for small businesses specifically?
Starting point is 00:03:22 Yeah, and it's not National Small Business Day, which is coming up in May. That's funny, because usually these days are specifically like, everybody, it's your chance to be heard. Get out there and make a difference. But no, small businesses need to be heard. No, we're not encouraging people to be heard anymore. Have you seen Twitter lately? I'm not going down that path. I mean, you all are small business owners here, right?
Starting point is 00:03:45 That is true. Today's our day. If you want to honor it, you better listen to our podcast all the way through. Do not think that you're dipping out at the 30-minute mark. You listen to it all the way through if you want to support the more business. And then you go and you listen to the good liars tell the truth. You go and you listen to that. liars tell the truth. You go and you listen to that. That's how you want to stay.
Starting point is 00:04:07 And listen to the ads, too, unless the ads are for like Chevrolet or some huge corporation. Listen to the ads. Yeah. Do your best, too. They do pay attention to that. But also, I won't begrudge you. We get it. But use the promo codes.
Starting point is 00:04:21 Anyway. Oh, taking this down a weird path. Real holiday alert, everybody. March 8th is International Women's Day. So y'all can sit down. It's just for me. I'm not going to say anything right now. I'm not going to say a word.
Starting point is 00:04:38 You're just. That does take away the. But honestly, I give you. Since it is my day tomorrow, I give you permission to speak because the segment would suck if it was just me talking. Happy International Women's Day. Thank you.
Starting point is 00:04:50 Tomorrow, yeah. Wow, I feel so recognized. When I saw it was coming up, I was like, let me book four or five men, but I can only get two. So I'm like, okay, we have two men on the show.
Starting point is 00:05:02 That's okay. You're there as well. Actually, your publicist is also in the Zoom room. So you hit the mark. It's technically 5v1 right now. 5v1, yeah. And we all just wanted to wish you happy International Women's Day.
Starting point is 00:05:13 Happy International Women's Day. Yeah. We could all say it at the same time, I think. And see you later. End of episode. End of episode. Well, women have all the power on this day. Ha ha.
Starting point is 00:05:24 March 8th is also, because of course we can't have the holiday all to ourselves, it's also National Proofreading Day. I am ready to move on from holidays, but Jonathan wrote a cute description, so I'm going to read it for you. Rewrite your sentences multiple times to make sure you're putting you best foot forward. Thank you, Jonathan. I'm a comedy writer. So, yeah. Nailed it. We're having fun so far.
Starting point is 00:05:53 Making yourself heard. I am not a small business owner. My small comedy business. So, if people are unfamiliar with you two, you guys show up to different Trump or conservative rallies and events. And you're known for the outlandish clips you get talking to people that are quite shocking sometimes. Quite shocking indeed.
Starting point is 00:06:19 Some folks might have also seen little moments like giving Ron DeSantis a participation trophy. I feel like a lot of our listeners probably saw that, things of that nature, kind of poking the people, bothering them in these humorous ways that maybe highlight some of their flaws or foibles or insecurities. Yeah, professional botherers. That's right. That's what we. Yeah. Yeah. Professional botherers. That's right. That's what we have to think of ourselves. The good botherers. I am curious if there are ever more productive conversations that happen at these events other than the ones that we see.
Starting point is 00:06:59 Obviously, we're getting the highlight reel when you post these clips. But, you know, there are degrees of Trump voters. And, yeah, I'm just curious if, I mean, specifically at a campaign rally, I bet you get some real diehards out there. But, yeah, just curious if there's other types of conversations you have. Yeah. I mean, it depends on, you know, it's kind of like what you said, the Trump rally, a political rally in general, the sample audience is somebody that cares enough about this candidate to get in their car and drive and wait in a line. It's a Trump rally because these things are huge. They're like massive things with 20,000 people there.
Starting point is 00:07:37 To wait in a line and go see this guy. So these are diehard supporters. It's like a concert basically for them. Kind of. And they're like- we were just in... A lot of them are in bad weather too. So the line is no picnic. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:07:50 When it's at like the Iowa caucus or the New Hampshire primary or something. They are diehard people. But I would say a lot of the videos, like this last, I was just thinking like last week we were in North Carolina
Starting point is 00:08:02 and I think there maybe were a couple of nice conversations that we had with some of the people there, but like also like heard some videos that like, I don't even want to put out. They were so bad. Like the things that were said were like, we're so homophobic and terrible. We were hearing in North Carolina. So it depends. I mean, we have like made, I don't want to say we've made friends, but there are like diehard Trump supporters that we see at all these events. You don't want to say we've made friends, but there are, like, diehard Trump supporters that we see at all these events. You don't want to say we've made friends?
Starting point is 00:08:30 You could say we've made friends. I don't know if they're my friends. I don't want to say, yeah. Well, it's okay. I mean, here I go again with my new catchphrase. Did you just move somewhere? I recently moved to the mountains, y'all. And I just said y'all.
Starting point is 00:08:44 Oh, wow. Shoot. Oh, wow. Didn't expect that. somewhere i recently moved to the mountains y'all and i just said y'all wow shoot also it's been over a year so i don't know if i can still say recently but we just put it on some merch check out our merch too late yeah so it's too late this is the phrase but yeah that's an interesting journey i've been on in being exposed to people who have very different political beliefs than me. And I have very few interactions with people that are as extreme as the ones that I see on your channel. Sometimes, you know, sometimes, but I, I think I've been on my own journey of what level of friendship do I have? And I do, I sincerely at this point have friends, made friends with people that maybe aren't Trump supporters, but have begrudgingly, you know, say like, yeah, I don't like the guy, but here are the reasons why, you know, I like him more
Starting point is 00:09:37 than Biden, you know, kind of that. And it brought brings up a lot for me about. Yeah. Are they friends? They are. They are. Anyway, sorry, this is a tangent, but no, no. I mean, I grew up in Colorado. I knew a lot of people who were conservatives and Republicans. I think Jason's a lot like there are people we run into and it's like a wave it's like a knowing wave like we we know you you know us and there's some like friendly interactions uh and then also the the horrific ones that you see sometimes in our clips but also to answer the question directly like yeah sometimes we do have good interactions. We try and post those, too. Sometimes people will give you a surprising answer. Just now I was looking at some footage of a guy who was like, I'm pro-life and then proceeded to say why he was pro-choice. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:10:35 And I've had one of those recently, too. Yeah. There are interesting and positive interactions, I would say. We try and post them when they're positive and also kind of funny. Yeah, that's good. Yeah try and post them when they're positive and also kind of funny. Yeah, that's good. Yeah, because we all have these ideas. And it's hard because there are certainly a lot of people that say the outlandish things.
Starting point is 00:10:53 I mean, but there's a wide swath of people that support Donald Trump. And I'm still trying to figure out the why of it all. And I don't have clear answers, to be honest. Because he's down to earth and he gets everybody. Yeah, just salt of the earth. Everyone's ability. Gold of the earth.
Starting point is 00:11:10 You know, those calloused hands. Right. Are you surprised anymore at some of the more outlandish things or have you just kind of heard it all at this point? I would, I would say it, we, it's really, at this point? I would say it's really, we are kind of calloused ourself now because we've heard some really out there theories. On the podcast, we just said, we were talking about there's this whole theory that Joe Biden has been replaced with a body double. And one of the theories is that the body double is Jim Carrey. And we heard that in...
Starting point is 00:11:45 Yes, I know. I know. That reaction is how I felt the first time I heard it from somebody. And then last year, I was interviewing somebody and they were like, I think Joe Biden is actually Jim Carrey. That's one of the theories. And I didn't have like the outlandish reaction. I just was like, that is not true.
Starting point is 00:12:04 I'm so sorry. That is just not true. Like i've i've already processed it there's no shock to it anymore no and you were also like sorry it's just it's not true because like you had thought about it you had synthesized it processed it and then heard it again you were like no i looked into it it's not right yeah yeah i took the time i did my own research and it turns out because didn't jim carrey do joe biden on saturday night live and it's clearly like jim carrey doing a big over the top well yeah but if you really believe it you might think he's purposefully doing a not great impression to throw people off the scent yeah there's always an answer conspiracy theories have no bottom.
Starting point is 00:12:46 So he spent his entire career making sure that anything he ever does is instantly recognizable as Jim Carrey's underneath that makeup so that he could do a really spot on impression of Joe Biden. It's a long con. At the State of the Union tonight, he might turn around and talk out of his butt. Yeah, exactly. I'd like to ask you a few questions here why is this not happening yet like for all his talents i wouldn't describe jim carrey as like a chameleon in in how he portrays his roles it's very very recognizable actor well that's why they say it's him though is because when biden fell going up the stairs to air force one it was such a physically funny moment the only person that could have
Starting point is 00:13:29 pulled that off oh my jim carrey that's why it is that's the reason hard to wrap the mind around the the gymnastics that people go through but also it's very fun i mean be hard to let go of that idea if you really loved it. I wish it was Jim Carrey. That would be a delightful reveal at some point. Well, it's interesting, too. Do these people – because so many – we're focusing now on outlandish things because there's this sort of spectrum of like, I don't like – I want lower taxes or whatever, whatever they have, their economic sort of thing. And then there's like, yeah, I think Joe Biden is secretly an alien who is impregnated kamala or whatever it is and then there's like
Starting point is 00:14:09 no i just hate like gay people and uh black and brown people like there's this spectrum of like outlandish horrific umbrella yeah um is it like is it a lot of whiplash there just sort of like this is a really hilarious theory you have and then suddenly like but also like we got around these people up or do you find there's a lot of separation there or is it just one big mushy like glob of all this kind of stuff together yeah i don't know there's so many different like camps within it that are like we now that we've like been doing this for so long you know when you start to talk to somebody like immediately you're like oh they believe this conspiracy theory they believe they're in the jfk senior is alive and is currently president conspiracy theory group never mind you would be 107 yeah yeah yeah and then there's other people that like are like just like just into q anon and
Starting point is 00:15:04 think like there's going to be these mass arrests that are about to happen. And there's like they say the plan. And you can kind of tell from the first couple of questions like what they believe. And then there's the people, like you said, who are like, I hate gay marriage. I hate this. I hate that. And then the people who are just conservatives who are like half an hour away and a big show comes to town and they show up. Right.
Starting point is 00:15:25 They're not not the same people who are who are like this is my 50th trump rally right sort of a social like yeah like jason said sometimes you like you can judge it relatively quickly when you start talking to somebody which which camp they fall into but i would say like more than people realize are pretty extreme because it's a self-selecting group because you're at you know trump rally like 70 of the people that are going to say something kind of wild which is it's hard to find a group in which 70 of people will say something super objectionable unless you're in line at a trump rally yeah but but part that, I think, is that they have, like the Republican Party with Donald Trump, it's a conspiracy theory.
Starting point is 00:16:09 You have to believe that January 6th was an inside job and all these things. And then he won the election. And the election was stolen. At this point, you have to. Yeah. Yeah. So the conspiracy umbrella is now like it's the Republican Party as a whole, which is a little scary.
Starting point is 00:16:23 Yeah. The whole premise of yeah their existence and continuation and the political arena is the conspiracy basically yeah but but it was encouraging i talked to a guy who looked like he was gonna say something wild and i was i was like what do you think about joe biden uh do you think he's he's guilty of any crimes because you know trump has been uh is involved in all these court cases and he goes i don't know i'd need to see a little more evidence yeah the mcfoley the guy that looks like yeah yeah yeah exactly so he was a great guy i liked him a lot i think a lot of the
Starting point is 00:17:00 conservative people that i know up here have a lot of resentment for the conspiracy-minded element that feels like it's taking over uh and feels like i feel as if that you know is a very frustrating element of this um i just have to acknowledge that yeah well it's interesting because i feel like so much of the movement kind of requires that a lot of that conspiracy minded thinking to maintain your support for this guy or for like the party or for the platform where like there's so many inconsistencies and sort of conflicting things going on. And you have to come up with some bizarre explanation for why it's actually OK to keep this guy around and to keep it going. But it's kind of it's almost a requirement keep this guy around and to keep it going um but it's kind of it's almost a requirement yeah you can't say he yeah he did lose the 2020 election and he did commit a lot of these crimes but i think i'm still going to support him like it's just much
Starting point is 00:17:56 easier to push all of it away right you either have the conspiracy or i saw a recent video where like you were just asking like a guy like how do you feel about Trump wanting to be a dictator how do you feel about that and he was like yeah I'm all right with it that's fine yeah so like you either have to like make up like a sort of like these the concoct this idea or be like no straight up it's fine I'm okay with it right you're you know good with all of it it used to be like Trump doesn't lie and now people are like yeah he has probably lied and done some stuff but i don't care i want him to win and i want that is the reality yeah yeah yeah it's like okay fine yeah would i be friends with him no but but i want a strong man to come in and solve all of our problems
Starting point is 00:18:37 and be the guy right like that's kind of yeah yeah i think like look, this is why I'm so not excited for this election. Oh, no. 2020. We can't wait. We're thrilled. I'm thrilled. No, but like Donald Trump is out there and he's speaking incoherent stuff. He says incoherent things sometimes, but he presents himself like he is in charge all the time. And if you're kind of a voter who's not paying attention to a lot of stuff and you're comparing the two candidates, you might just be
Starting point is 00:19:09 like, I'll pick Trump. I don't know. Was it that bad when he was president? I don't know. I'll pick this guy. I don't know. I also think there's like a big echo chamber like thing to this whole, every time we start talking to someone, like you can hear them saying this to their friends at the bar or in their living room or whatever you can hear that they haven't really been asked about this stuff and and nobody has pushed back and you can kind of imagine sympathize a little bit with like what that would be like to be in an echo chamber and never really hear why have anyone push back as to why that idea might be you know damaging right and
Starting point is 00:19:46 if anything it's you know the response they get is going to be a positive one and or lead them in an even farther direction exactly right and then you're gonna that's great you're you're yeah you're not going far enough and then yeah you know goes into the real world and someone like jason or myself is like really does that does that make sense people are like huh sure right the hall moment is always interesting to watch like yeah there's something there you're working through it there's some you know there's something that could click potentially yeah well we should talk about some news but luckily unluckily it's all related to this exact same conversation so we'll we'll keep you know touching back to it But let's talk about some Super Tuesday results. Yeah, cuz the big headline here is that Trump won every state except
Starting point is 00:20:32 nail by Nikki Haley finally dropped out by Nikki So yeah, it's the thing that we all knew was happening Biden v. Trump the redo it's it's the thing that we all knew was happening biden v trump the redo um it's so pathetic it's pathetic like a country just all of us this is pathetic this is the best we've got right now whenever i think about it it's just so fucking sad and like look at this husk of a nation like and they're little they're little husks going after each other again uh nobody wants this it's miserable um congratulations to the candidates it has the look of like a slowly occurring train collision or something
Starting point is 00:21:14 watching them and we've been watching it for months watching them head toward each other okay is anything anybody gonna do anything is anything gonna change no they're on track none of us can do anything about it okay well let's continue to watch and we're still however many months away and it's so far away it's so so far away and it's never felt like it quite ended but yeah you're correct and you know you'd think that we'd get better at reacting to train crashes, both literal and metaphorical in this country. But we don't seem to learn any lessons. I'm going to throw to Jonathan to walk us through some of this stuff that he's prepared for us. Well, the interesting thing about this is that there are warning signs for both candidates. Right. You'll read like, well, this is a big warning sign
Starting point is 00:22:05 about this thing that happened for Biden, but this is a big warning for Trump, so I kind of want to go through those. Everyone wants to read their fucking tea leaves. It's March. What else is there to do? We gotta report. We gotta, you know. It's New Show Bee Herd Day. There's a lot to do.
Starting point is 00:22:21 Think of the bees, guys. Think of the bees. Think of the bee shepherds out there trying to gather bees. I mean, what a thankless job. Why don't we care about the bees? I mean, the bees are dying. We should report on them. The bees are dying. So one of the big warning signs for Trump is that a lot of moderate GOP voters still
Starting point is 00:22:36 don't really like him. Nikki Haley won moderate GOP voters or voters who said they were moderate in North Carolina two to one. But since it's a primary and people who are really into the GOP come out for the primary, she still got trounced. But in a close election, there's a lot of concern among the Trump side that, well, these people really don't like Trump. They're really done with him. Will they, you know, go home as voters tend to do or will they sit or like not vote or even switch to Biden? And then, of course, Biden had a lot of not great stuff happen either.
Starting point is 00:23:11 Uncommitted won 20 percent of the vote in Minnesota, 8 percent in Colorado, 13 percent in North Carolina. And some of these are states where he can't really afford, you know, for people to stay home. Just a few thousand to ten thousand votes could like right like he lost north carolina 30 000 state uh votes total like that swayed the whole election exactly for for biden so yeah right so fortunately both uh campaigns are gonna be feeling extremely uh anxious for the next eight months which i'm sure is going to be great for all of us yeah trickle down anxiety we love it i don't know it's like with with with trump i'm like he is doing so well in these polls right now and 2016 2020 he always overperformed his polls so like maybe you could add a couple couple numbers on top of those poll numbers.
Starting point is 00:24:06 It looks really, really bad for Biden right now. And I don't think he's got the State of the Union tonight. Who knows how he's going to perform that it's going to help or if it's going to hurt. He was actually pretty good
Starting point is 00:24:17 the last State of the Union. I was surprised, but I have very low expectations. See what they have him on tonight. Unless he says the thing that a big chunk Of the country wants him to say He's fired No he's announcing a port
Starting point is 00:24:30 We're building a whole port For the thing that we're doing Yeah So that's not going to go well for him In my predicting In my psychic awareness I don't know if we're in the like it's just such a politics and like the media and the horse race and all of it it just seems
Starting point is 00:24:52 like so um warped now and like the things that used to matter don't necessarily matter like biden's state of the union speech isn't gonna like turn it around for him you know like i don't think it could hurt him it could hurt him for sure yeah yeah but there's also what they have like there's so many things everyone's like people who like really care are going to be locked in and they've already formed their opinions so they're going to just like try to spin it however they are like i can't i just can't imagine a speech from joe biden that's like wow he convinced a lot of the nation to get behind Joe Biden. That's just not where we're at right now.
Starting point is 00:25:28 There's not. Maybe, I don't know. Maybe we are. Maybe there's some magical phrase he can say. But if he gives a speech that's really, he seems really, really old and forgetful, I don't think that's going to help people if they refer to that and be like, this happened in March. How is he going to be in November?
Starting point is 00:25:44 How is he going to be in 2025? how is he going to be in 2025 how is he going to be exactly a second term so there is it's i think it's a high stakes moment for oh yeah that's the thing it's it is it's high stakes in one direction where it's like you're either like treading water still or you're gonna like sink a little bit i feel like i watch a biden speech the way i watch figure skating where i'm just constantly worried that they're gonna yes i'm like nope okay no he got through that turn okay oh he's coming back to the podium he's coming back perfect i don't know that i can recall anxiety like the like the debates in 2020 i don't know that i can recall being more on the edge of my seat like is this gonna be is the big one gonna hit right now where yeah he just
Starting point is 00:26:25 has a live meltdown while on screen with trump is this going to be it he made it it's too stressful i don't think that my body uh you know my nervous system can handle it but you are correct jonathan that is exactly it is exactly like watching ice skating and i can't watch ice skating anymore because it's too stressful for me yeah so i'm hoping there can't like there's a I think there's a very slim chance they'll actually debate each other this year. Probably. I think Trump knows he doesn't need to think that. I think I feel like Trump would would welcome it. I think if if if anything happens with the Democrats, where they pick another candidate he'd make up some bs reason to
Starting point is 00:27:05 not right but i think like with biden he'll be like yeah i'll i'll debate i think it's yeah i think it's 50 50 with biden because it is like that but also i don't know i just remember the 2020 uh how fucked up and uncomfortable those debates were like even though like yeah they got through them it was so odd and like off and i don't know if any of either of them would want to do that again because also i don't know there's a like the immigration thing issue is going to be permeating this year throughout the entire election because there's some things i don't know how much Trump's rambling can like actually deflect like reality to a point. I don't even know. I just hope they don't basically is what I'm saying, because I think it's going to be a disaster.
Starting point is 00:27:52 You just hope they don't. So you don't have to watch. I don't like Trump will easily probably get under Biden's skin, whereas like in 2020, it was harder, I think that and like Biden was able to like either he wasn't listening or paying attention or like it's kind of like in 2020 it was harder i think that and like biden was able to like either he wasn't listening or paying attention or like it's kind of like brushed off of him and it seemed like he was in control but i just worry about the agitated version of biden today who had to like go out and give an angry press conference when somebody called him old you know like it's i i don't i'm not i don't have confidence in this he's easy to provoke yeah to throw off but maybe trump is too because he's a he's a angry guy yeah but he also has that that sort of trump confidence the teflon uh aspect of him so
Starting point is 00:28:39 well he can anything goes when he speaks in terms of his voters. So there's not really a way to corner Trump. And you can make your point. You can land it. He could not have a great answer. And it doesn't matter. It just doesn't matter. He'll spin it into some other territory. And we're off to the races again.
Starting point is 00:29:03 And people have forgot where we started. They're too busy trying to catch up with his word salad. It's kind of the opposite too of Biden's State of the Union where like, if Trump doesn't debate, even. Like he's not going to take a hit for not debating. Like so many of people who support him are like, don't debate him. He's not even the real president or whatever. And so like, if he doesn't debate, it's fine for him. And if he does, then he might get under Biden's skin. Whereas I don't think that equation goes the same way for Biden. Yeah. Yeah. But also Trump hasn't like, he debated Biden, who is not, was never a good, great debater. And then obviously with his age,
Starting point is 00:29:41 it's like not pulling off, pulling out like facts about the lies that he's hearing in real time. You know, he's just not able to do that. Right. It's like it's a fire hose. It's hard to for a spry debater to be able to counter all of that stuff in a reasonable fashion that people watching can can follow. I do think he like struck a chord in 2020. And there was this like cathartic
Starting point is 00:30:06 Moment for a lot of Democrats when like Trump was going on and it may have been the real like loud talking over one And he he had that like I'll just shut up man or was something like that People did really connect to that where they were he's just like would you just like this guy won't this guy won't shut his Don't yap, you know, because the other thing, too, because like I keep seeing we'll see. I know like the polling says what it says right now, but I also know that it's March and at a certain point these people will be on TV every day. And it's, you know, Trump is a wild guy and he says some fucked up stuff and it's not always going to be breaking through. And at a certain point, we are going to get a lot more of that. And also you see, I see a lot of, you know, all the sneaky little behind closed doors, Biden saying this,
Starting point is 00:30:58 and a lot of reporting of like, yeah, he wants to like call Trump an asshole and stuff and be like a piece of shit to him, which to your point jonathan might be really really effective people want to see anybody tell that guy to shut the fuck up yeah because nobody does um so nobody knows except i guess the nation once when we voted him just that one time to shut the fuck up and i guess twitter that's true twitter right yeah but it's so depressing and we all know it's depressing for the millions of reasons it's depressing but just thinking that he had a mob of people storming the capitol to disrupt the certification of a presidential election and now he is the presidential candidate for the republican party
Starting point is 00:31:43 again when there was the opportunity to just do away with this forever. And it just wasn't done. It's not a good look for us, America. No, it's not a good look. We thought we were there on the 6th, on January 6th. And like on the drive, when we were driving back, it was kind of like, this was so scary. We don't know what's going to happen. But we thought like either Trump's taking control of the country or it's over.
Starting point is 00:32:05 Like there's no like we're never going to have to deal with an election with this guy ever again unless he's the dictator. Consequences will be had. Yes. Right. I think we should all learn to stop predicting. Then the months and the years. And then it was like, I cannot believe people aren't breaking with them and everybody. I mean, it should have just been like a waterfall and then it would have been over and we could we'd be in a different a different spot right now.
Starting point is 00:32:30 Yeah, I would not have seen this coming the couple of days after January 6th. But by by a month later, I would have absolutely by a month later. Yeah. So we need to take a real quick break for ads. Oh, thank goodness. Don't worry. We're going to just hop right back in. In fact, just we're going to continue this conversation and insert some ads.
Starting point is 00:32:55 But here we go. Insert them now. Be heard. And I feel so heard. So listen up, Jack. Whatever we were just saying. Jonathan, you were going to say something. I feel so heard so listen up Jack uh whatever we were just saying Jonathan you were gonna say something I have
Starting point is 00:33:08 one question and then I want to continue talking about like all the chances they the Republican Party specifically had to like end this thing and move on if they wanted to my question is is there a moment on January 6th where you thought
Starting point is 00:33:24 that you would have to film the vice president getting hanged? We saw people break through and we were from this kind of intermediate distance. Like we weren't in the middle of it. We were close enough to see what was going on. what was going on. And when when they broke through and and flooded all the way up there and it was clear like people were getting into the building, we didn't have the benefit of like any news reporter telling us anything, any time having passed. It was all happening right there. So I think we assumed that the worst was happening. I mean, and it was to some degree inside the building. Like it was such a wild scene and people were, the violent things were happening like right
Starting point is 00:34:10 in front of us. So yeah, we just assumed like some incredibly awful things were happening inside the building. And you know, like I said. That must have been an extremely scary and upsetting experience because it was scary and upsetting, horrifying for those of us watching at home. But to be there and not have the context. Yeah. I mean, that day at home was surreal, watching the news and seeing that kind of thing.
Starting point is 00:34:34 It's like, this doesn't happen. What? No. We decided to go there because we were going to leave. Our plan was to leave during Trump's speech because we thought there was going to be violence. And we were driving out of town and then we saw the crowd going from the speech to the Capitol. So we pulled over. And the thing that I always remember from it is there were these flashbangs going off that the police are using to disperse the protesters.
Starting point is 00:34:58 But we were hanging out. We were interviewing, seeing like militia guys who had like been all around dc the day before and that day and they basically like set up their own like military perimeters around the city and like walkie-talkie letting the everyone know like who was coming and going and when we heard those we thought it was like a bomb going off we thought that they were like actually like bombing the capital in those moments. You mean the flashbangs? Yeah. The flashbangs. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:35:26 When the flashbangs went off. So when those, like you feel them in your chest and then there's like the real fear that like, oh, this might be about, I might be about to die right now. So for the couple of weeks after that, I was basically waking up at like two in the morning every night. And like all of that was like replaying in my head yeah so it was like definitely like a little bit of ptsd and we got like surrounded by trump supporters at one point because they saw that i had a microphone and like luckily we were like
Starting point is 00:35:54 making our way around the side of the building and we're trying to figure out how serious this is and a woman runs by with her dog on like her break from work with her headphones in has no idea like it's far enough away that she's just kind of like annoyed that people are like a little in the path and there's like a you know a person with a baby carriage a little further away from that then a guy runs by with a hole in his cheek because he'd been shot by a rubber bullet it was like families rioters god like everything was like unfolding in that moment and on top of it all there was like this group of of christian i don't know what you call them they were singing like uh some sort of song in the name of jesus yeah covering this place covering this place. So they had like speakers set up.
Starting point is 00:36:47 So I don't know what they had prayed that Trump would take over or something. And then when this riot took over that they were praying for people's safety or something, it was coordinated. It was like a small stage. And all of that happening at once, it was too much for the brain to handle. It was absolutely too much. People raising their hands up, praying. And then there's people beating the shit out of cops in front of you.
Starting point is 00:37:13 And these huge bangs going off. And you're thinking they're going to start shooting the protesters. Because it looks like they're about to kill the cops. Because they're just punching them in the face. It was too much going on. Really way too much. Too much. To sort it through.
Starting point is 00:37:28 Yeah, I honestly can't imagine. Yeah, I would certainly have some PTSD after that experience. It was wild. It was wild. We actually here, we can plug our podcast right now with this too because our next episode is going to be on our whole experience there.
Starting point is 00:37:46 But there was some wild, like random funny things because we stayed in a hotel with Trump supporters the night before. It was just like a really wild experience. We stayed in a hipster hotel with Trump supporters in DC. It was like very, very bizarre. It was a very bizarre experience. Did you see any of them at the at the riot the next day you know like from across the crowd you like the first person i talked to when we got into
Starting point is 00:38:11 town the very first guy he was dressed head to toe in like camo he had all the the tactical gear and he had ridden his bike into freedom plaza or whatever this was the day before and then he was on a bunch of FBI wanted lists so we did here you are before yeah and then in some of the pictures we've seen I feel like we've spotted some people we've interviewed yeah thank you we saw like a flag that was there that was like oh yeah a woman that davram interviewed and it was like she was just like a probably 60 year old woman and she was it was a big flag that said treason and she gave kind she was it was she was very angry but not reason on one side 70 1776 2.0 on the other and she had made it and we looked and one of the
Starting point is 00:39:07 capital like the the pictures from inside the capital was that flag on the ground like of the senate floor or something it was like wow she made it to the senate floor at least her flag yeah right yeah it was a homemade flag like you it could not be mistaken for anything else it was all you know tattered and the flagpole bent up, but she got inside. All these before and after vignettes, it's so bizarre. Did you see Jay Johnston there? Did you get to meet Mr. Show?
Starting point is 00:39:35 Mr. Show. Jay Johnston? Oh, no, no, no. Well, maybe we did, actually, in the mob. Yeah, maybe he was one of the guys that surrounded us. He flung backwards into a wall full of trinkets and knocked them all over. Started doing the herky-jerky dancer. So a lot of, or maybe not, but I think we're going to start seeing more January 6th participants
Starting point is 00:39:56 running for public office, Congress soon. Hell yeah. The Supreme Court ruled this week. Congress soon. Hell yeah. And the Supreme Court ruled this week. Well, they gave a ruling that may make that easier since they ruled that states can't disqualify Trump from their ballot under Section 3 of the 14th Amendment. I would say it's probably the 25th opportunity that Republicans who would probably like to
Starting point is 00:40:20 get rid of Trump had to do that. And they decided they didn't want to touch that, they didn't want to allow it to happen. And it's interesting, the ruling was technically nine to nothing, but not really. The liberals on the court very much disagreed with the reasoning here. Amy Coney Barrett also didn't join with the liberals, but she had some objection to the way the majority ruled in this one. And it's another case where the originalists on the court seem to only be originalists when it suits them because Section 3 of the 14th Amendment is pretty clear that no one
Starting point is 00:40:55 who engaged, no one who held public office and engaged in an insurrection against the United States can hold public office again. And they decided to say that only an act of Congress could disqualify someone under that amendment. So for people out there who were holding out hope that Colorado banning Trump from the ballot would do it. No, it won't. Sorry. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:41:20 For all those people. Sorry. Sorry to you and also the rest of us believe in anything yeah but the good news is we could have q shaman in 2028 for president that and that would be fun that's a cool that would be cool fun and cool that would be a day yeah i'm not surprised by this by any of it i mean oh yeah no i think most people like most people i think knew that this wasn't gonna take right oh i don't know there seem to be some people that are surprised nita totenberg well she wasn't she was surprised at how far some of the the how far the majority went to say oh
Starting point is 00:41:58 they're making it kind of tough to disqualify someone under this amendment to the point where it might be tough to disqualify, you know, a January 6th defendant under these qualities. And it made Nina Totenberg on CNN suggest that maybe the SCOTUS is going to be a little more amenable to Trump's immunity claim than previously thought. Because it doesn't seem like they should let him be immune from prosecution from the from the jack smith federal prosecution for trying to overturn the election but now it's like i'm not so sure they're gonna hear that case in late april more amenable to interaction yeah very amenable that's the thing like i just feel like this is this long slog of just like yeah there's there's the train that's the thing like I just feel like this is this long slog of just like
Starting point is 00:42:45 yeah there's the train that's the wall it's heading towards and we're like ah it's not gonna it's gonna there's another track they'll find I didn't know it's one direction isn't this their job? it's going off a cliff right now I think we need to look yeah and we're all the coyote with the
Starting point is 00:43:01 umbrella standing over nothing being like eat and no one will see it because warner brothers won't uh no they won't release oh wow yeah i have hope that you know what everyone was saying from the beginning here was they're gonna rule in favor of trump here and then in jack smith they're not gonna rule in favor they're gonna rule in favor jack smith still, I'm a glass half full type of guy. And I am going to hold out hope that that's going to happen. You gotta be, you know, because otherwise, oh, it's not looking great.
Starting point is 00:43:32 You know, it's just like, maybe there is that line. Because I feel like they do want, like the benefits of Trump becoming the president, I think outweigh like any sort of moral or ethical like issues they have they have with it i mean in their opinion in their opinion that's what i mean but like i feel like you know i there is like a sliver of hope that like there is a line of like well we don't want the completely off the chain version of trump where he can do literally anything and maybe that's true for enough people on the court but i don't know oh i really don't know i don't know i'm he's like what what does he have to lose if
Starting point is 00:44:15 he gets into office it's just like i i wish that would have really land with more people like what does he have to lose he's been facing 91 felies. He's already tried to overturn an election in the most public way he possibly could. He got away with it. What possible thing would happen that would hold him back from his worst, worst desires? And I can't think of that thing, given what we've seen. Yeah. And, you know, in many many ways this was his only option like he'd probably be more of a more likely to uh have things stick to him if he wasn't also
Starting point is 00:44:55 the front runner the only option for the republican candidate oh yeah president you know it's like well i i to just keep doubling down. Otherwise, my goose is cooked. Yeah, he needs to be the president. My goose is cooked. Never said that. He has two options. My goose is cooked.
Starting point is 00:45:11 You've never said that. You're right. I've never said that. I don't know what's happening to me. I don't know what's happening to me. You're probably saying that stuff a lot. It's incredible to think that whether he wins or loses,
Starting point is 00:45:27 he'll probably find a way to be the Candidate again in 2028 If he's alive If he wins he'll be like we gotta get rid of that 22nd amendment Immediately I don't know how he'll swing that But He'll try to find a way When we were working on a show
Starting point is 00:45:42 In 2018 DeVrom was like we should buy donald j trump 2024 in case he tries to run again if he wins and then now we have that website so anybody has any funny ideas or something to do with it we did what we did something with it like after he when he lost in 2020 but yeah i don't know that brief moment i was like i don't want to redirect to biden's paid i've got my it's too obvious that's that's a treasure that you have in your hands though yeah no this is professionally yeah it has me going for a minute here so just give it some thought are you on the site now is it yeah i
Starting point is 00:46:24 don't even know what we that's yeah see'm on DonaldJTrump2024.com. What is it, the apology letter or something? It says a message from Donald J. Trump, the loser of the 2020 election. I lost. I'm the first president ever to be indicted. It doesn't say I did everything right and they indicted me.
Starting point is 00:46:39 But he did. And they did. And then it's got some buttons to donate, but they're not clickable. You should make these clickable It's like if you read that you wish you and you still decide to give money maybe that's on you So anyway think on that Jonathan what else should we talk about in our last few minutes here well we could talk about i mean we can talk about elon meeting with trump and maybe
Starting point is 00:47:11 giving him money to bankroll his uh look yeah well what do you look like you have something to say about this well so we just we talk about elon too probably, but he's the guy who's bought the site and we have to sometimes. I feel like, well, first of all, fuck this guy. Meeting with Trump about like, are you going to donate to my campaign? That's the campaign. That's the donation. The donation to Donald Trump is Elon Musk's presence with him and his willingness to meet with him and him spending $44 billion on this website so that he can push all this anti-immigration stuff that he's been
Starting point is 00:47:52 doing the past few months. Like that is the donation to Donald Trump's campaign. It doesn't matter if he's going to actually give an amount of money to him. Right. He's supporting Donald Trump. He says he will not. Yeah. Like this thing, I saw his tweet is like i'm not gonna give to any side yes you are it's just not like literally an amount of money um you are 100 supporting this guy by your actions and your presence and this 44 billion dollar purchase you made it's just absurd and uh i hate that we have to talk about him more often than we don't
Starting point is 00:48:23 need that money he does need the money. He does need the money. That's very funny. That is very funny. Because also, it's so funny. Sorry. I remember when they met when Trump was the president. And later on, Trump made this, I don't know if he's kicked off of Twitter, so this might have been a truth that he truthed out or whatever.
Starting point is 00:48:42 But he's like, Elonk came to me and he begged for money he begged me like a dog and now here we are and it's very funny these just these two like monstrous weirdos just like begging each other for money every few years well competitors in the social media networks you know because of true social Truth Social. Oh, right. That's what occurred to me. They're, yeah, they're spirited competitors, were to believe. I wonder if he, I bet he asked, like, I'll give you money if you come back on Twitter.
Starting point is 00:49:15 Exactly, yeah. I 1,000% believe that. I tweeted this today. Did not get much traction. Don't tweet, just don't do it. Didn't get much traction. Okay. It's not a well thought out idea,
Starting point is 00:49:26 but it is an idea I woke up with thinking about Elon and Trump meeting and probably this thing, come back to Twitter. And it dovetails with this last question Jonathan has prepared of, do voters forget what Trump is like? We keep seeing think pieces and people having this conversation of like,
Starting point is 00:49:42 do we all just forget? And, you know, seems like a distant memory in some ways this is obviously not all of it but he's been off of twitter not daily spewing out daily nonsense we actually have kind of forgot what that feels like and lots of people are like no wrong well fuck off i i don't care but like that's a real thing that brought you so much anxiety and he has been gone this whole time and so it's like you it's easier to ignore you're not being just you don't get cofefe or whatever the fuck you don't you see like screenshots from truth but then you don't like it doesn't get a lot of traction and you also don't
Starting point is 00:50:23 get like the um the the jeff tedricks of the world or whoever like replying to every single one of his tweets and then boosting it up and then it like it becomes discourse it's more just like look at this fucking stupid thing he said on truth and then that's exactly yeah when the truth social of it and him gone at first there was something that there was a relief sure palpable relief but there was also something in me that was nervous about oh what are they going to be talking about that most of us aren't going to be seeing but now my new reality is like oh no it's just he's become palatable in our memories it doesn't feel as bad or something for a lot of people um also what they're talking about on truth social is now just what they talk about on twitter
Starting point is 00:51:11 and you get to monetize it so but i do think that if he's president he'll be back on probably i mean it won't even matter yeah the news will be reporting on it like it's yeah everything will be news the official like potus'll have the official, like, POTUS account, too, right? Like, even if he doesn't tweet from, like, Donald J. Trump or whatever. Just say, like, tweet at North Korea with, like, a couple missile signs and be like, what's happening? It's weird how he's back. All right.
Starting point is 00:51:36 Like, he has been strangely satisfied by being able to just be on Truth Social because he gets to do the same thing he did on Twitter. He just has far fewer people seeing it but it doesn't seem to bother him he's like i'm satisfied by that because he's yeah i mean it's uh you know it's his place it's a safe space and he doesn't get a lot of the pushback i think you know he probably revels in some of the pushback because he likes you know it's that troll uh aspect that he enjoys but on truth social it's only positive feedback right so he gets to be a fucked up guy saying all this fucked up stuff and he only sees people uh supporting him and
Starting point is 00:52:15 retweeting him so he probably does enjoy that yeah here in the um uh truth social truth uh with with musk and trump and this it's he just insults him like this is like a a real litany of insults and it's a good one because he says there's uh cars that don't drive long from the beginning let's just do the whole thing we got it okay well go ahead and read it um because you're right it is like from start to finish god it's perfect because there's also this uh the photo of him at the in the oval office atval Office at the desk doing the only smile he ever does. And then Elon looking like the most awkward man in the world. When Elon Musk came to the White House asking me for help on all of his many subsidized projects, whether it's electric cars that don't drive long enough, driverless cars that crash or rocket ships to nowhere without which subsidies he'd be worthless and
Starting point is 00:53:05 telling me how he was a big Trump fan and Republican I could have said drop to your knees and beg and he would have done it burn him when the guy's right he's right when he's right he's right it's so funny
Starting point is 00:53:21 years later just be like hey you said you you were big Trump fan. Give me your money. Are people setting it to Musk? I'm assuming they are. I'm sure they are. This was a long time ago. I know.
Starting point is 00:53:34 But I just think it should be. Just keep reminding him. Remember, just like in the replies, screenshot, screenshot, screenshot. That's all. Boy, we did it. We're at the end of our show. We did it. And what a show it was. Our gooses are cooked, we did it. We're at the end of our show. We did it. And what a show it was.
Starting point is 00:53:46 Our gooses are cooked, y'all. Our gooses have been cooked. Oh, boy. Don't take that catchphrase. That's Katie's. No, that's ours. That's ours. What are you talking about?
Starting point is 00:53:56 No, that belongs to the mountains. We wouldn't take that catchphrase on International Women's Day. Yeah, this is going to be in our merch store soon. You can be heard right now by telling us how to find you, promote the podcast. Let us let you be heard.
Starting point is 00:54:08 Let us let you be heard. Thank you so much. That's so nice. We're being allowed to be heard right now. You do it, Jason. Okay, I'll do it. I'll do it. I'll do some smooth talking here.
Starting point is 00:54:20 We have a new podcast called The Good Liars Tell the Truth that's out wherever you get your podcasts. We also have special bonus episodes on Hero Hero. You can go to herohero.co slash thegoodliars or thegoodliarspod.com. You can follow us on social media at The Good Liars on all platforms except for Instagram, which is TGLNYC because there is a Pretty Little Liars slash The Good Place fan page called The Good Liars that was established years ago and they will never respond to our DMs asking for the
Starting point is 00:54:56 post lab. Is it active? No. Years and years ago. We've got to have a process for this. What an unfortunate confluence of shows. That's so funny. That is very funny and strange.
Starting point is 00:55:11 Oh, that's so funny. I'm trying to even remember what that was. It was like on Fox Family or something like that? Probably Warner Brothers. It's like a freeform show. Yeah, I've seen some episodes. Is that a poster you have on your wall? Wow.
Starting point is 00:55:30 Pretty little live. I thought I blurred my background, but I'm head to toe. I can't remember who's A. It's all here. Jonathan runs that Instagram account, by the way. He's like, finally, time to cash in. Answer their DMs. And to get our Instagram account,
Starting point is 00:55:47 I had to, because our Instagram account was originally owned by a Sum 41 NBC Nightly News and more shit. Come on. More shit? Okay.
Starting point is 00:56:03 That character actor, David Moore, fan page. I had to DM them for weeks. Have we mentioned that Jonathan's a comedy writer? We got it done, exactly. This was great, you guys. Thank you again. I know I'm supposed to say something else.
Starting point is 00:56:20 I'm forgetting. Oh, right. I remembered. We love you very much and it's true
