Hello, we are back and talking about the latest trade war with Canada, Trump's travel buddy Natalie, and Hakeem Jeffries meeting with Jared Kushner. Welcome back to even more news, the first and only news podcast. I am Katie Stoll. Oh, wait, Cody's not here. Cody's not here, folks. There's nobody to chime in. Jonathan's also here. Hi. Hi.

I'm always so hesitant when there's just two of us to jump right in. I have to figure out my place. You don't know your place? Your place. Well, if I should be like, I, that is the name of you and I, Jonathan, here. Thank you. No, we shouldn't. Well, actually, you did a really good job mimicking the Cody bit, but you don't have to rely on that. You've got your own bit.

We're going to start with, like, kind of new stuff from this weekend because we're back in a trade war with Canada. Again. You thought that was like April 2025 stuff? No, it's current. It's August 2026 stuff. Well, you know, one thing that that feels good staring down the barrel of all of our increased prices, affordability crisis, a war with Iran that will never end. And I guess an exploding deficit is the specter of more tariffs. Sure. Yeah. No. Like as Trump tries to address a four. portability concerns and bring down prices. He feels like he has to pull the bring prices up lever again. So they were having talks this weekend that apparently fell apart.

They were asking for way too much from Canada, who I guess was in good faith trying to negotiate a new trade deal, even though we have a trade deal with Canada. So Trump posts early Monday morning, Canada has been ripping off the United States of America for years. They're ridiculously high tariffs on our farmers and farm, products has made life impossible for these great American patriots, blah, blah, blah. He says on January 1st, he spells out first for some reason, F-I-R-S-T. On January 1st, 2027 tariffs on all cars, trucks, both large and small, automotive parts

and steel will be increased to 50%, which is really high. And I have to bring it back to this idea that, because we talked about this a lot back in the tariff time a year and a half ago, but like, just... just because we have a trade deficit with Canada doesn't mean they're ripping us off. It just means we buy more stuff from them. From them. And in fact, the entire reason that that deficit exists is because around 60% of our crude oil imports come from Canada. If we didn't do that, if that ceased to exist, we would have a trade surplus, I believe, with Canada.

It's just because we buy a bunch of oil from them. and I don't think we want to stop doing that, given the gas prices that he's trying to bring down. So it really is another one of these examples where it doesn't seem like Trump knows what tariffs are or what they do because he might be able to use them as leverage in a negotiation, but it is going to do the opposite of the thing he's been promising to do for months, which is lower the prices on things. Yeah, he's stuck in this idea of American superiority that he has to let go of, this idea that, oh, we can bully everybody around the world to be exactly what we want them to be because we're superior. We've got all the leverage. We don't, baby. We don't. They know better at this point. We have burned all of our bridges. We are an unreliable partner in every sense of the word. economically, politically, militarily. This, it's just wild to watch this happen again. Honestly, you should know better by now that these tariffs aren't doing what they think you'll do.

Or he just doesn't fucking care. Yeah. And also he didn't mention what authority he is issuing them under because the Supreme Court already said the one way he tried to do tariffs. was unconstitutional, maybe this one will be fine. I guess when it's this tit for tat thing, like I really don't know what the legal implications are anymore. And I guess we'll find out if these tariffs do happen

because they're just threats right now. He's not actually doing them. Well, if they were supposed to start now, right, over the weekend. Well, the 50% tariffs, he's threatened for January, 27. Okay, that one. But these other ones, right. Right. There's stuff going on right now. That's a separate. There are separate tariffs that are part of this tit for tat tariff, tete. Wait, that's cute. Tit for tat tariff, tete. Is that how you pronounce? Title tete tete. Tete. Any of our French Canadian speakers out there want to chime in? I know. I'm really offending the Canadians probably right now. I'm so sorry. I'm kind of on your side on this because I think, so don't come at me for my tete-a-tete.

transgression. It's funny. Our producer Moana pointed out before we started recording that one of demands that apparently the U.S. is putting out is pushing Canada to stop promoting French language content on the streaming services. What? I want more so I know how to pronounce tete-a-tete. Well, this is all just so silly. And I guess it's a good distraction if that's what it is. distracting from all the other stuff that everyone hates. And so part of this whole tariff, trade war affordability debacle is another announcement that Trump made late last week, which is that he is going to lower temporarily the quota tariff for ground beef. He says the United States will allow up to 300,000 metric tons of product for ground beef to be

imported with no out of quota tariff, right, to drive down prices. He doesn't say where they're coming from, like where this beef is coming from, and obviously all of America's cattle ranchers who are like 90 plus percent Republican aren't happy about it because it's their product. No, why would they be? I'm not quite sure where I land on this personally because obviously the cost of food is out of control. And people need their beef, I guess. That said, yeah, yeah, our cattle ranchers, there's a huge swaths of people in America that this deeply negatively affects when, you know, they're in a crisis right now. There's lots of things affecting their herds.

We don't know what this beef is and where it comes from, which is what brings me to the horses. Now, I should say that this is wild speculation. on my part because they're wild horses. But it's wild speculation that, because similarly, while this beef thing is happening, there is a loophole that the Trump administration is taking advantage of. It's illegal to slaughter wild horses in America.

You can't, like, capture wild horse and slaughter it for meat. But the government rounds up wild horses, Mustangs to control the population, and now they're like shipping these horses to, companies, and those companies aren't saying who they're giving it to or what they're doing with it. A livestock trader in Ohio named Brandon Jones bought dozens of Mustangs for $25 each, and then the Mustangs disappear. We don't know what happens to them. And so, again, I don't have any evidence for this. Total speculation. But it's weird that we are shipping off

hundreds of wild horses to go die and be slaughtered in other countries at the same time that we're importing 300,000 whatever's pounds? It is weird. I'm totally lost. What have we done with wild horses in the past? 300,000 metric tons. That's a lot of, that's a lot of beef. It's a lot of beef, quote unquote, beef.

It's horse. I'm just saying that's a couple of weird stories to come out around the same time as we're shipping out horses, we're shipping in beef. Here in America, we've got stomachs of iron after all of our food safety cutbacks. We're like, bring it on, baby. Cyclosporus got nothing on me. We're cramming lettuce into our chalupa Supremes and then going right to the movies and eating a whole bag of sour worms.

We can handle anything. Oh, yeah, no. Salma sour worms, yeah. Yeah, I've been getting no less. Even though I know it's not in every supply. and everything. I've just been saying no lettuce on anything for a while indefinitely. We're all nutrient deficient. I bought some organic head of lettuce. I will never buy the bagged lettuce again. I'll tell you what. Oh yeah. Bagged salad's always dangerous. There's always you can't wash off all the...

I relied heavily on them for a while, but no more. Fuck off Taylor Farms. Even though the frozen blueberries that are contaminated that can kill people, those were sold in other states at publics and stuff. Wait, they were frozen ones. I thought they were fresh. No, there were frozen blueberries. However, I had fresh blueberries and I made a smoothie last week, a little treat for my week off, and I still, like, boiled the blueberries beforehand out of an abundance of caution. I'm boiling fruit here. Did you boil them, then freeze them?

Pay never. We should follow up with what the biggest story of last week was while we were gone, which were three words that Georgia Senator John Ossoff said during a speech. So he doesn't want to do the job. You know, he golfs and trades stocks. This is Ossoff. He wants to build his ballroom and travel with Natalie on their apparently defenseless flying palace, gifted by the emir of Cutter.

The story of him running from the plane and hiding in the catering plane, this was after break, right? Yeah, well, no. You didn't talk about that on a show. We didn't talk about it. It happened like the morning we recorded, I think. So we missed all of this.

We missed Trump hiding on the plane. We missed Trump leaving Marco and others on the decoy plane while he took Natalie Harp, his close aide, and others onto the non-decoys. jet to make his escape, which is probably what inspired this brief comment, travel with Natalie. Now, there has, of course, been speculation online and elsewhere that because she's always right

there and she's so close to him and she's called the human printer because she prints out like memes and tweets and stuff to show him that there might be something romantic between them. Whether he intended that or not, there's certainly plausible deniability there. I'd be willing to go so far as to suggest that

maybe he was hinting at that. Fine. Who cares? Well, Donald Trump cares. The outrage that this generated in the right wing among Scott Jennings.

It was. Yeah. Such a little comment. And whatever, insinuate or not, the president says the most hateful, horrific thing. All of these clowns say the worst vile. Just spew it all over the internet.

Open their mouths, spew it on TV. And it's just give me a fucking break. Give me a fuck a break with your manufactured outrage. Yeah. I mean, that's the thing is like even you could even concede like, oh yeah, that's below the belt. Like 30 years ago, if you had suggested that Bob Dole or someone was like, a little too close to his

personal aid. That J.S.K. was a little too flirty with Marilyn Monroe. Right, but 30 years ago would be like that stuff is off limits. But now, like, I'm sorry, guys. The muck man is the president. I don't even need to go

through his resume of quotes. Yeah, for one. For one. The most sexist, misogynist president we've ever had, and that's saying a lot. Shut up, Peggy. Yeah. Like,

So I guess instead of just like spare me, it's like, I don't believe you. I don't believe that you're offended by this. I think you're threatened by this guy who's young and seems to have a growing fandom and might remind you of like young Obama in a way that traumatizes you. They're scared of him. They get this upset because there's something weird happening here. This is a weird relationship that the president has with this. I have to presume unwell young woman, not even that young. You know, a woman, young woman, whatever.

34, I think she is. Fine. I would love for that to be a young woman still. My point is, it is unsettling. It is weird. All of the information, yes, we've been aware of her presence in his orbit for a while now, but some of the information, some of the letters that have been procured and published are pretty shocking and odd.

And so if people are upset, well, you're also overcompensating because I think it is weird. I think we all can see that it's weird. There's something unhealthy happening here. This woman is unhinged. Yeah, I would... I'd like to read part of this,

one of these letters. I'd like that for you too. You'd like that for me? And these are like printed out... like paragraphs of text for the president, who we know is a huge reader, and some of them are very like apologetic. It's very, here's a part I'm going to read. This is the second paragraph of one of these letters,

maybe partially written by chat GPT. I don't know, who cares. I want things to always be right between us. I also know I've been distracted all week for getting to eat throughout the days and even for getting to sleep and only catching a couple hours at a time. I haven't been myself dwelling on the past and the pain of losing my dad, and I started letting the remarks of people who haven't bothered me before get to me. Not because I care what others think, but because I see myself being lowered in your eyes and good opinion.

That is the fear you see, because I never want to bring you anything but joy. I'm sorry I lost my focus. You are all that matters to me. I don't want to ever let you down. Thank you for being my guardian and protector in this life. It's really unnerving. If I wrote a letter like, that to you, Katie, as, you know, I'm not a personal A, but we work together in a similar capacity. We talk every day during the work week. You're always printing things for me. I print things out for you. I show you memes. Uh, you know, very similar. You control my Twitter. Work professional dynamic. I feel like if I gave you a printed out letter like this, you'd reasonably be like, what the fuck? Not if I was like Donald.

Trump. Yeah, I should be. But this, have you ever worked for a really abusive boss? Don't say me. You can say me. But there is a dynamic. I've worked for unpleasant people. But I've worked for somebody who pitted people against each other. And when you were in their good graces, I mean, this woman would literally give you gifts, beautiful gifts if you were the one that the chosen one that week. And if not, you were on the outs and you were terrified and there creates this dynamic. It's a very abusive pattern where you feel like you need to supplicate yourself to them. And it's not a surprise that Donald Trump is an abusive person. But it's not a secret. We see it loud and clear.

But this does show a couple of things. And also this woman is unwell. I mean, she's been obsessed with Donald Trump for a very long time. She's estranged from family members, or at least her brother, who has talked about, you know, I mean, it's, she seems unwell. But it also speaks the dynamic of being in Donald Trump's good graces. If I was to surmise read between the lines or not even read between the lines, people are commenting about how weird this is, how weird their dynamic is. And she's freaking out because Donald Trump doesn't want to be embarrassed by anybody. And if you are embarrassing in any way, then you're out.

then, you know, and you can go from being this chosen one to his punchline, his punching bag. I mean, the reason we know so much about her is because of leaks from other Trump administration people who think it's weird and don't like her always hanging around and whatnot. Like, that's how we have this stuff. And I'm sure it is a threat because we also know that whomever stokes his ego. last or, you know, puffs them up the most, is going to become his most trusted advisor. And we, we know that she is by his side. She is tagging along. She's willing to be the carpet, to be the rug that rolls out beneath his feet to let him walk through the mud to the car or whatever.

That's what she wants to be. Well, Trump is personally unable to turn down adulation of this kind. He doesn't have it in him. Even if he does feel like he's like, I'm not reading that. He's given her the meme like, sorry that happened to you or I'm happy for you, that meme where like I'm not going to read all that. But someone who adores him this much, he can't say no to that. That's all he wants.

That's all he needs in life. And the rights insistence that like she's off limits. You can't even mention her in a speech. But like, no, she is newsworthy. she gives him the memes and posts to truth social. She's apparently the one who dug up in the sellers of the internet, the video, the AI video of Barack and Michelle Obama in the likeness of apes. That was her posting that. Yeah.

When there's a slew of memes being posted all night, we now understand who is digging them up, who is posting it. It's fascinating to look at her letters. and see the way that she writes. And I'm sure this was talked about a lot last week, but I wouldn't know because I was on vacation with Maitais. I'm rolling my eyes at myself for anybody not watching. But she writes like him. She capitalizes like him.

And I'm curious, I mean, is that her reading his Twitter posts over the years and just changing who she is. I have to assume that's as a either purposefully or unconsciously trying to style herself after him. Or maybe she just puts it in his, maybe she's five steps ahead and is doing that purposefully to like incept him and say.

Well, yeah, because she's incepting. I mean, I think she's certainly tried to emulate his style so that she can post as him. But right, it's in these letters. as well where there are words capitalized seemingly arbitrarily. Dwelling on the past, past is ex... Yeah, the past capitalized. Like, okay.

It's weird. So anyway, we missed it. We missed a week of this. Should we wrap up by talking about Hakeem Jeffries and Jared Kushner? Sure, because I don't understand why people were applauding Mom Donnie when he met with Donald Trump in the Oval Office, but now apparently Hakeem Jeffries doesn't get to have secret meetings with Kushner. Are you saying the different things are in fact different, Katie? I don't know what I'm saying, Jonathan.

Okay, set up this story in case people don't know what we're talking about. Representative Hakeem Jeffries, the House Minority Leader, Democrat of New York, had a prime meeting with a non-official Trump advisor, envoy to the Middle East, et cetera, Jared Kushner to discuss what they call in the New York Times potential areas of common ground, which seems like... It seems like you wouldn't want to find common ground legislatively with the group of people you plan to be investigating in a few months, the enemy. the people who are undermining democracy,

profiting to the tune of billions off of the presidency, et cetera. Immediately, you know, anyone who criticizes Hakeem Jeffries over this is just playing favoritism because we were all fine with it when Mom Donnie met with Trump. And one, not everyone was. And two, obviously there is a difference between a mayor of a city. playing nice with someone that he's called a fascist that the president acknowledged that he has called a fascist to get something for your city and having a secret meeting with someone who's not an official part of the executive branch that you're treating as if they are

to find common ground what to push forward legislation this is so frustrating yes exactly john there's a huge difference between these two things i was Being sarcastic when I started this segment, everyone, if you didn't pick up on that. No, no, you weren't. Really? Kitty. The transcript of this is going to make it look brutal for you. They're going to tear me apart in the comments.

There was some criticism of Mom Donnie meeting with Donald Trump, but ultimately that was a very effective thing for New York City and for leftists in general, because what happened was Donald Trump was charmed by Mom Donnie. And Momtani actually didn't sacrifice any of his points. He didn't, he wasn't aggressive with Donald Trump, but he didn't just say what was what Donald Trump wanted him to say or whatever. And all Trump got out of it was the photo op, which is what he wanted. All he got out of it was a photo op. Right. And that's that. There's a huge difference between that and Hakeem Jeffries meeting in a secretly,

with Jared fucking Kushner to see how they could possibly work together and collaborate. What are we talking about? That isn't even good campaign strategy. I don't know what you get out of this because the entire Democrat platform at the moment is just anti-Trump. They're not even looking into different ways

to reach new voters or to shake things up. We don't know what they want to offer, that socialists are bad, leftists bad. And so this doesn't make any sense to me even strategically, politically. And again, as Jonathan already stated, presumably these are the people that Hakeem Jeffries will be trusted, expected to investigate in a few short months. What are we doing? What are we? What the fuck is there?

Yeah. He's not up to the job. And I want to call out something. that I do think it's good that the New York Times noted here. They say during the recent meeting, the pair discussed housing, immigration, and the high cost of living as potential areas of common ground. Kushner suggested that Jeffries meet with Susie Wiles, White House Chief of Staff. But they point out that what are we going to get out of this? Because Trump this year refused to sign the housing bill, the bipartisan housing bill, and said he wouldn't sign anything until he gets the Save America Act passed,

which I guess he won't care about after November but what are we even talking about here? It seems as if this immediately leaked and doesn't make Kushner look bad at all to anyone. No one even cares that he's involved in this but makes Jeffries look bad to his base and it seems like he just got played. Yeah, I mean it certainly seems like that

although there are certain stalwarts who refuse to admit that that makes him look bad anyway Neera Tandon being one of them. Yeah, I mean, I get like maybe, maybe not because the people who are upset with Jeffries about this are people who already don't think he's up to the job like us and think there should be no leadership if and when Democrats take back the House to investigate Kushner's profiteering to the tune of billions of dollars. Billions from the presidency. As we referenced in our Jared Kushner episode a few months back, if the algorithm isn't floating that up to you, go find it. Yeah, it just, it just feels like two steps back. Like, this is why people kind of like Assoff, even if he's not the most progressive potential

2028 candidate out there, is because he seems to bring the fire and wants to go on the offensive against Republicans as much as the base does. People are furious. They want this establishment, this new corrupt establishment that Trump has seemingly set into place very quickly torn down. So I don't think it's an accident that Assoff is striking a chord with people and making people think like maybe this is the guy. I don't know. It's like way too early. It is way too early. But what's not too early to diagnose is the fact that people have a hunger for a candidate or for candidates who are boldly and loudly against this regime and for.

for change. And what accountability for them? That's even separate from the hunger that people have for real change in actual policy ideas like Medicare for all in the rise of leftist candidates and DSA candidates all across the country. And their surprising wins and their victories. You are a fool if you can't see that. And, yeah, Aosif's comment struck a chord with people because we're desperate for it. And everybody's still continuing to hide their head in the sand and pretend that it's okay for Hakeem Jeffries to be meeting with Jared Kushner off books to try to collaborate. Shouldn't be listened to. Should be discredited, in my opinion, at this point. And one other thing I want to say about the travel with Natalie comment is that that's all he said.

He didn't say Trump aide, Natalie Harp, who, by the way, is the one who got to. to hang out with him on the escape plane through the catering truck or whatever. He didn't need to. It should be a signal to all Democrats that that crowd knew what he was talking about. Wasn't looking at each other like who? Like people are clued in on this

the same way the right sometimes goes overboard with how much they think normies like know all their stupid memes. Like there are plenty of people that Democrats are going to need to get on their side this November and in 2028 who don't know.

all these intricacies, but the fired up people who were going to that rally knew what he was talking about and probably knew the most recent news story about the plane. So embarrassing. That was so embarrassing. Yeah, to picture him crouching in a, what, like a food in and a catering truck. I just think how offensive to everybody that he left behind. the plane for sitting going to die. He must be like Marco. I didn't actually think you were going to get blown up. They just told me I had to crouch in this in this stinky food bin. I did it, whatever. And yeah, you and Scott would have would have would have blown up. You know.

Embarrassment. And Carolyn Levitt. Oh, sure. And she's she's out. Bye Caroline. Right after coming back from maternity leave. She's like, I don't need this shit. I got the kids and I've done my duty I've done my lying I've lied intensely every day for a year and a half I've already got an old husband an old man husband yeah to take care of whatever I don't need to talk about her anymore well folks I think we did I think we successfully returned from vacation we survived without Cody here it was hard but we did it we persevered um if you want to leave a comment telling him how much you miss him. We don't mind. It feels great. That's engagement, baby. And it feels great. It feels great because you usually when you check the comments after

a video goes up, one, never do it. Don't check the comments. But right, it's always like people got mad at something that you said in a way that did whatever, all that kind of stuff. And you're like, maybe I should have said it this way or whatever. But when you're not there and then you check the comments, it's like praise for you who is not there. And then if anyone is mad about something, you didn't say it. They're mad at the other two. Who cares? Yeah, not my problem. I know right. Those two really, those two Jamokes really messed things up today when I wasn't there. Yeah. All the comments about Katie are how great I am, you know? Like, it does, uh, feels good. We should always not do the podcast and feel good about ourselves. But we have to have something
