Starting point is 00:00:00 hi welcome back to even more news the first and only news podcast hello there what's my name again it's katie stole from what i've read in the papers about News Podcast. Hosted by Katie Stoll and your name. Oh, my name. Hi, I'm Cody Johnston is the name of me. Cody Johnston, everybody. And Jonathan is here. Hello.
Starting point is 00:00:37 There he is. Jonathan, no last name. Do I have permission to say your last name? Jonathan Producer. Oh, sure, yeah. Is that a thing? Jonathan Harris. That's my last name, yeah. Well Oh, sure, yeah. Is that a thing? Jonathan Harris. That's my last name, yeah. Well, great show, everyone.
Starting point is 00:00:48 I know, it just puts everyone to sleep hearing my bland-ass last name. Can you fix that for us? You have a vice president's last name. Don't worry about it. It's fine. That's true, yeah. I never think about that. You're in the American canon now. Nobody ever thinks about that.
Starting point is 00:01:05 That's kind of true yeah like i forgot somebody mentioned her at the shoot yesterday and i'd forgotten about vice presidents in general are pretty forgettable well because they're never brave enough to do the right thing you know it's really crunch time well that's why you gotta hang them yeah that's a common thing mike pence thinks he was the first but no every every inauguration you want to hang the previous vice president exactly i feel like one of the few american traditions to the constitution we got some holidays oh boy do we have some exciting holidays uh augustth, the day we're recording. Why is National Lazy Day?
Starting point is 00:01:47 I want a lazy day. Why are we working? We're working right now. Well, you can have one whenever you want, though. You're an adult. You can have a lazy day if you choose. I want to celebrate National Lazy Day. Well, as an adult, you should have planned ahead.
Starting point is 00:02:01 You should have known that National Lazy Day was coming up and planned to not record the podcast on the day right i don't know if people would accept that as an answer you got to be not lazy up top organize get it together plan ahead get thursday off and then be lazy all day this day goes back to at least 2014 but jonathan couldn't find the origin yeah celebrating early i guess yeah days of the year.com speculates that the founders were too busy chilling to keep a record of their efforts but i'm got them that was my version of a rim rim shot is that sounds like some sort of dirty sex thing so i wasn't sure if it was the right phrase rimshot is a correct phrase okay difference between a shot and a job exactly uh august 11th blow shot what's that sorry go ahead play in the sand day this day started out as a way to celebrate sand castles and other artistic
Starting point is 00:03:04 sand structures But now it's about playing in the sand however you want Maybe you could try out a nice blowshot in the sand, I don't know I guess that's fine That's a great Neil Young song, Blowshots in the Sand Blowshots in the Sand Blowshots in the Sand Nine minute guitar solo
Starting point is 00:03:24 It's like a real rocking song famously rocking speaking of rocking songs hey everybody we have a special announcement to make we being me cody hi uh i have mentioned this before the podcast and you've heard it before because it's the introduction to the podcast the first eight seconds of this show are the first eight seconds of my band's new album called Laverne. I hope so, too.
Starting point is 00:04:26 We're already working on album number two, so. Prolific. Check that out in the future. With all your free time. Yeah, I know. I sure am tired talking about how food in America is bad and lacks nutrition in an episode this ad may or may not be attached to. Seems like that should be fixed. I'm so tired from whenever that was.
Starting point is 00:04:46 Like a puttering dirt bike. You know, the human body is a lot like a dirt bike. Both have a seat, legs are like tires, and of course junkyards are filled with pieces of both. Oh, and both have a radiator shroud and drink gasoline to survive. Except my gasoline is AG1. I gave AG1 a try because of these ads. It fills me
Starting point is 00:05:08 up when I don't have time to eat, makes me feel healthy and full, and so on. So I drink AG1 in the morning out of a gas canister, and it makes me feel like a revved up little bike that all the cool kids want to buy. Like a dirt bike prize at the county fair. But I'm not allowed there anymore. Dang. Anyway, just one scoop of AG1 has 75 vitamins and minerals and probiotics and other...stoof. It helps with your gut health and is said to boost energy. They even have travel packs so you can take this nutritional supplement on the go. Like a dirt bike would if a dirt bike were on the go. Moving from county fair to county fair, never love. So if you want to take ownership of your health,
Starting point is 00:05:53 try AG1 and get a free one-year supply of vitamin D and five free AG1 travel packs with your first purchase. Go to drinkag1.com slash more news. That's drinkag1.com slash more news. That's drinkag1.com slash more news. Check it out. That's what I said. Boy, I sure love treating my mouth to some fine dining. But what of my butt mouth?
Starting point is 00:06:17 Why do we not treat our butt mouths same care as our head mouths? Huh? How come? Well, that's where Hello Tushy bidets come in. It's like fine-dieting for your bottom. Hello Tushy cleans your hole with a fresh stream of water that's twice as good as wiping and prevents hole particles from getting on your hands. It's like a summer rainfall for your butt. Not to mention, it's easy to install, requires no extra plumbing or electricity, and
Starting point is 00:06:45 comes with a 30-day risk-free guarantee and 12-month warranty. No wonder they have over 100,000 five-star reviews. It's time to treat your butt right. Wine and dine your butt because it deserves it. After all, it's been through so much. Cookouts, keg parties, that one time at camp. So stop wiping and start washing. Go to hellotushy.com forward slash more news and use promo code more news for 10% off your first order. That's hellotushy.com slash more news for 10% off. Do it for your disgusting butt. Let's start with a little bit of SAG strike talk. The strikes are out in droves. The people are in the streets.
Starting point is 00:07:36 The demands are being made and not met. And Katie, you've been in town to film an episode of the show that we make. And we'll maybe we'll talk about how that is going later. I know. But you were in town for that. And while you're here, you're involved in you're like going to strikes and stuff and picketing and whatnot. And it seems like you're having a good time. And also it's, you know, invigorating.
Starting point is 00:08:05 Yeah, it's both of those. It's that. It's not supposed to be fun, but it should be fun. That's to get people out there, you know? It's been weird, the timing. I couldn't get here sooner. I wanted to come as soon as the strike was called. And it was pretty hard to just be sitting at home and watching.
Starting point is 00:08:22 But I have to be pretty thoughtful about when I'm traveling because of the you know our shoot schedule but also we had lots of family coming throughout July so this was my first opportunity to get down here and it has been very lovely uh to have an outlet for your anxiety and just to see people. It's lovely to say, okay, meet a friend, but then you run into a bunch of people you know. It's lovely to see all the support. People just keep donating stuff every day. You talk about the taco trucks or people bring celebrities donating donuts and whatnot or pizza,
Starting point is 00:09:07 but throughout the time, and I'm friends with lots of strike captains, so I keep hanging out there and seeing what's going on. And they just, people just drop off buckets of bouquets from a florist to hand out to people as a thank you. Uh, somebody had 10 extra giant gardening hats and brought them. There's just like a table of donations and every location has that. I've been at Netflix and Disney so far. I'm hoping to hit some of the others. This is interesting at Disney.
Starting point is 00:09:38 I don't know what it was like. Well, I do know it was like before because everybody's told me. know it as dyke before because everybody's told me since last week and this week the city of burbank put up no parking restrictions monday through friday for all day yeah they did all around the studios there's no parking i mean i parked very far down on a main drag to walk back up they also own i mean i'm sure they own way more than this but next to the studio one of the blocks around it they own the entire block of homes and they're just standing sets they're just beautiful homes that are desperate to be lived in that sit empty and have all these parking restrictions and it's honestly. Is that Keystone Road? Keystone Street?
Starting point is 00:10:25 I think so. Yeah, it's Keystone. Where all those are? Yeah. It's like, they've got all the lights on on the front porch. There's no one there. Anyway. So while Bob Iger was, as IndieWire described him, being kinder and gentler, he influenced
Starting point is 00:10:40 the city of Burbank to make things tougher for people who wanted to show up at his studio. I mean, he saw, I don't know. He influenced them. He kindly influenced them. I don't know how you prove that, but yeah, obviously. Yeah. Because I was trying to park on one of those streets, and I looked up and I saw the sign. I was like, oh, and there was a guy across the street parking.
Starting point is 00:11:00 And I was like, oh, he must live in the neighborhood. He must have a permit. And I was like, where can you park? And he was like, here. I park here all the time. And I was like, no, you can't in the neighborhood. He must have a permit. And I was like, where can you park? And he was like, here. I park here all the time. And I was like, no, you can't. He's like, what the fuck? This wasn't even somebody coming to picket.
Starting point is 00:11:12 Join the line. He was taking his dog for a walk somewhere. So that kind of stuff, it's hard. And seeing just people that have been out there every day, the writers for 100 days now. It's inspiring and heartbreaking. It's heartbreaking because the reality of the situation is so fucked that, you know, there will be a deal. It's hard to believe. And I don't know.
Starting point is 00:11:40 I don't know what's going to come of this. I don't want to make predictions about how it'll shake out. But things have to fundamentally change. Writers will probably end up making concessions that they don't like and they shouldn't have to. And I don't know. I can't pontificate. I'm not. Do you feel being there that there is a new sense of like a reinvigoration?
Starting point is 00:12:03 Just for me being there? Yeah. Yeah, because you showed up because yeah everybody was really thrilled to see me specifically well because like i think part of the strategy of the studios has been to wait it out these people are going to get tired of this they're going to want to get back to work the longer this goes on the the more it plays into our hands but it really feels like every story that they plant every story that the studios plant in variety and the hollywood reporter just reinvigorates the the writers and the actors yeah man we are going to need to get this done or else our industry is done that was a poor gamble um on their part this is um depending on who you follow on social media i've seen this
Starting point is 00:12:47 joke made a lot and it's very true but actors and writers are usually out of work you know we're looking for that job that you get one or two jobs for the year right uh the rest of that time is you're self-starting and you you can sit at home or go to a coffee shop and work on your project or you're right at whatever you're doing, but we're used to it. They're used to not like, honestly, the thing I've heard from so many people is it's pretty nice to have something specific that I'm doing every day. It gives me definition in my day.
Starting point is 00:13:22 Then I go about doing my stuff and it's like, yeah, it's like, well, I know that I'm going to come here before it gets too hot. So I'm up early. I feel really good. I feel really productive and still have plenty of time to do the things that I was going to do. So no, I don't, I'm sure that people are disgruntled at times, but you know, no one's going every day. There's a good, and it's just a really positive feeling when you're out there and you're getting your steps in. I wanted to also talk about, in general, Los Angeles right now, at least downtown, and in certain parts of the city, feels like there's a there's a real energy of activism because there's also the hotel workers are on strike and then on tuesday was it tuesday or wednesday la city workers about 11 000 la city workers went on strike i guess that was just a 24
Starting point is 00:14:14 hour strike yeah delayed uh trash pickup in some neighborhoods 11 000 workers went on the strike for on strike for 24 hours uh they were alleging unfair labor practices they're demanding higher wages uh as well as well uh people in like in the in the hotel uh unions in uh city workers unions and frankly actors and writers in la most rank and file actors and writers in la can barely afford to live in the city where they work. Yeah, exactly. They are forced into really long commutes. They're taking public transportation from out of town so that they can work in the hotels
Starting point is 00:14:53 and serve the tourists. Yeah. Industries are bad. just unsustainable to expect people to be able to live here and different conversations for everybody but yeah across the board the cost of living in los angeles in everywhere but especially major cities is um untenable with what we're paid well that's why they want to scan your faces right yeah just get the algorithms working they want to's why they want to scan your faces right yeah just get the algorithms working they want to whittle they want to whittle down your bones so they can get bigger bonuses they think they can recreate that katie stole magic with ai but you can't
Starting point is 00:15:36 recreate a hello tushy ad you can't in a in a computer with chat gpt. It's not going to happen. You can't do it. You can't ask a computer about its butthole. You can't. It doesn't have one. It does not have one, y'all. There I did it with the y'all again. There you go. Yeah, you are doing that a lot. That was just two times now.
Starting point is 00:15:58 We should maybe point out that you are a member of the Screen Actors Guild, but Some More News is not affiliated with the AMPTP. Oh, sure. Have we been getting those questions? Not much, but it might be worth clarifying. Yeah, yeah. Especially with, yeah, what we're talking about.
Starting point is 00:16:14 Yeah, this is a really good question, point of clarification. Actors are not barred from all work. We are not allowed to work with struck companies and the struck companies would work in, uh, soap operas. That's a different contract. Daytime TV is a very different contract. And, you know, you can work on certain productions. New media is also fine.
Starting point is 00:17:01 So there's just, it has been confusing at times to parse and piece together what it is, is what's allowed and what isn't allowed. And also not wanting to do the wrong thing. For a minute, I thought maybe I shouldn't. But the more I've talked to people and come to understand the situation, it's more important that we are, you know, talking about what's going on. And again, there's no point. Some More News is not affiliated with any of these people. We're independent. So you would be striking against yourself.
Starting point is 00:17:29 I would be striking against myself for no reason. Cause like, so yeah, that's, that's completely different. Um, some of it's weird where I, you will not, I desperately want to talk about things that I'm watching, but I won't. Right. There's nothing good on TV. There's nothing good on TV or at the movies. But don't stop your TV or movie viewing habits because then that shows the studios that nobody cares about entertainment.
Starting point is 00:17:59 So I'm not sure what I'm supposed to say. Yeah. But my friends are working on TV shows and i'm proud of them but i will not tell you about it and neither will they which must be the most heartbreaking thing when you get your big break and you're on a tv show and you're our lead and now you don't get to talk about it fuck these people sounds really specific yeah got a couple of them if if the views on some more news suddenly went up 20 percent that would tell netflix and disney that they're not the only game in town and they've got lots of
Starting point is 00:18:30 competition if that were to magically happen yeah um we should move on to other topics but jonathan in our notes you did include some of this that i do want to address yeah this is despite that there are opportunities to work in those avenues, especially for writers right now. They are feeling the heat. This is a long time of being without work, a long time of like and it's not some people. I have friends that were staffed on shows that hopefully will have a job whenever this is over. But most people weren't. And so now those months of time when you're trying to get a job, you haven't even been doing that. So it's like once the strike is over but most people weren't and so now those months of time when you're trying to
Starting point is 00:19:05 get a job you haven't even been doing that so it's like once the strike is over then what you know so it's it's definitely incredibly stressful yes billy porter is saying he has to sell his house fuck anybody who i've seen so many comments like well that, that's on you, blah, blah, blah. And it's like, we have no idea what his situation is, but it's awful that he had a couple jobs lined up and now doesn't. I'm a little surprised that Billy Porter has to sell his house. I know. a few months ago with sydney sweeney saying you know like everyone thinks of me as a movie star now but i have to work a lot to like this is to have a house and do all the stuff i have to do and if i have to stop that for a year like i'm 25 that all goes away like things are a lot more
Starting point is 00:19:55 not that they're paycheck to paycheck for like very famous actors but things are a lot tighter in hollywood for most people the reason i say like, fuck you to the comments, the mean comments that I've seen. Like, yeah, obviously that's perhaps was worried about money for longer than just the strike. Right. But you've got jobs set up and then you know that you're working towards that and that you've got this. And I don't I'm not in a position to judge anybody's finances because we have no idea. But the reality is that, yeah, you don't i'm not in a position to judge anybody's finances because we have no idea but the reality is that yeah you don't make big patients so much of it goes out you want to get jobs if you're at a certain level at that level where you're not quite famous but like
Starting point is 00:20:34 are you or like i just the fact that people who were on orange is the new black for like 50 episodes of orange is the new black or getting residual checks for $20 a year is ridiculous. It's just the money that most people working in entertainment have is not what you think it is and their expenses are very high. Not just LA rent,
Starting point is 00:20:58 not just mortgages here and blah blah blah, the food costs. I mean 10% to agents, 10% to managers, you gotta pay your lawyer. If you got to pay your lawyer you're if you want more jobs if you you're at that level you got to pay for a publicist that's like a retainer for every month of it's extremely expensive so you're spending a ridiculous amount of money just to stay in the game and all that money is going to wall street executives and the executives at all these companies they are going to non-creative people who just need the line to go up so they'll
Starting point is 00:21:31 take it all for themselves yeah anyway hot labor summer all right maybe we'll take a break time to sell your homes and take a break and national lazy day i'm gonna go put my feet in the sand for 30 seconds. Call back to the beginning of the show. You get it. Hot Potato Soup! This episode is brought to you by the pod cover by 8sleep. I'm Katie, by the way.
Starting point is 00:21:57 Hi. It's nice to meet you. Like this. Well, I don't know about you, but I'm always tossing and turning in my cocoon. It's always too hot or too cold. Sometimes I get up in the middle of the night to chew on newspaper so I can add it to the outer envelope of my nighttime sack. But the pot cover by 8Sleep is designed to regulate your temp. That's right. It works like any other fitted sheet, but with
Starting point is 00:22:23 the added ability to adjust the temperature based on your individual needs. Heck, it even tracks your sleep during the night so you can wake up with a personalized report. It's really important to get a good night's sleep. Sometimes an owl. That's right. I said owl. Sometimes an owl will get trapped in my cocoon and I have to spend all morning chasing it out. But with the pod cover, I'm at least rested and ready to punch any bird that dares to grasp me. So go to 8sleep.com slash more news and save $150 on the pod cover by 8sleep. That's the best offer you'll find, my friend. But you must visit 8sleep.com slash more news for $150 off. 8sleep currently ships within the USA, Canada, the UK, select countries in the EU and Australia.
Starting point is 00:23:16 I've never experienced sleep like this. Invest in the rest you deserve with the 8sleep pod. And we are back from our little lazy break. Yeah. Did you get sand everywhere? It's all up in my toes. Why did you bring sand with you? You know what?
Starting point is 00:23:33 I don't like sand. Sorry, Cody. I'll vacuum it up. Please do. Thank you. Before you come over here tomorrow. Yeah. Sand is gross.
Starting point is 00:23:43 Away from the beach. Well, it's coarse. It's coarse and hot yeah it's hot gets everywhere yeah it gets everywhere you know what also is bad democracy fuck yeah perfect it's holding me back burn it all down uh shall we talk about uh education in flor God, yes. And the lack thereof. Jonathan, walk us through what's been going on in Florida so we can get angry and react. Well, there's a lot. I mean, over the last month, a bunch of different news stories have come out about how educational standards and curriculum in Florida are changing. in florida are changing it was a couple weeks ago that we found out the state's recently updated academic standards on sixth to eighth grade social studies would include details about quote how
Starting point is 00:24:34 slaves developed skills which in some instances could be applied for their personal benefit oh this is so yeah we've been kind of putting this off for a little bit just because it's like this little we there's so much already a lot of discourse around it and people making all the points that one would make about how like that's not necessary um and it's also a very clear like in the context of everyone's everyone like seems to point out like well actually like it's true like yeah they got some skills and then like uh they were you know freed from slavery and then could use those skills but also regardless of like the like the kernel of truth of like yeah i guess like over time you develop a skill and then you can use it just like how like learning something works it removes the context of
Starting point is 00:25:26 um the fact that they were slaves yeah and and the context of the de santis florida project generally and the backlash against like wokeism and all and like learning about slavery and all this sort of stuff, it seems very obviously like a move against this other conversation going on. Not like, well, we want to educate people. No, no, no. You're doing it on purpose because you're mad about the wokeism. It's a very clear move, right? And people seem to talk about it as though it's just about improving education.
Starting point is 00:26:03 But things don't happen in a vacuum we've been paying attention to florida and de santis and the critical race theory conversations all this sort of stuff so it's very disingenuous i think to to just sort of be like well yeah that it did happen some people did benefit from it but like you didn't benefit from slavery it's like that's gruesome it's so infuriating and the fact that i mean people believe this or or not maybe they don't but they like to have that as a justification as to why that they think that it's all gone too far as they want to be able to point to something that's like nah it wasn't that bad actually there's something it's like oh this makes me not feel so bad about my ancestors i don't know it's all so fucked up but just inherently don't you think you can learn skills anywhere you don't have to be a fucking slave to learn
Starting point is 00:26:58 how to blacksmith and most slaves died right and also like they had skills they had skills before they were slaves and sort of to your point like i guess whenever i hear when i first heard this come up and the point being made or whatever i had that reaction i was like okay so what what is your like what's your point because like you're saying like you can learn skills no matter what. It doesn't matter. And the institution itself wasn't like there to teach anybody skills. That's not why we're not doing outreach to Africa to teach people skills. Yeah, we didn't introduce chattel slavery to teach people skills like it's absurd.
Starting point is 00:27:44 What if the reverse happened? If place just absurd what if the reverse happened if place it like if what if the reverse happened it's impossible and stupid if stanford if stanford suddenly decided to enslave all the people who attend that school no one would argue oh well they are teaching them skills so there might be a positive like no this institution decided to enslave people what are you talking about yeah and at the end of the day it was evil actually why would you ever why why do you need to teach that why do you need to even plant a seed of an idea that enslaving someone is altruistic in some capacity actually benefited them how why would we ever either side who want to exactly that's and the and the answer is well if you've been paying attention you're aware of the de santis florida of it all the christopher roof
Starting point is 00:28:32 of it all the libs of tiktok all that shit it's all part of this story um it doesn't things don't happen in a void and to talk about them as if they do is not very honest. And, you know, one of you, Jonathan, I think, referencing people's defense of it, saying like, oh, well, we're just trying to improve education. No, you aren't. Because here we are. Let's talk about some of this other shit. AP psychology. You know, the headline said that the state had effectively banned AP psychology due to the course's content on sexual and gender identity. And that is true. It has effectively banned it in that you're not allowed
Starting point is 00:29:14 to. OK, yeah. So Florida's Board of Education says the course can still be taught in a manner that is age and developmentally appropriate. But the college board has refused to modify the course and is recommending that school districts not teach it unless it can be taught in full. So yes, effectively banned it. I have a problem. This is an AP psychology, which means students about to enter college, high school students that are performing at a college level they are little adults probably 16 or 17 and uh how is that developmentally not appropriate we aren't talking about a little child we're talking about someone who's about to vote like and but just in general so let's follow this the way this is do we not want psychologists and mental health professionals
Starting point is 00:30:05 coming from florida well to think that it's age and developmentally inappropriate to teach about for example the existence of homosexuality and how that was addressed by psychologists over time which is basically history. History of psychology. Yeah, and something that I'm pretty sure most 16-year-olds in Florida know about the existence of. Maybe not in 10 years. Right, and then you want to give context and you want to educate them about that.
Starting point is 00:30:38 Yeah, but in 10 years, they still will. You can't ban it. You cannot ban mentioning or talking about... I mean, you can, apparently. I mean, you can't ban it you cannot ban mentioning or i mean you can't i mean you can't apparently but like i'm was just making a flip joke but like well maybe in 10 years the 16 year olds won't really understand that grew up in florida because they're not allowed to talk about it yeah but that won't happen because i mean yeah this is all like we talk about all this with the idea that it's gonna get reversed right that this de santa stuff in florida is not gonna stick that's not gonna be
Starting point is 00:31:11 how the place is for decades i hope not one hopes not um because yeah because there there's a and this is maybe you know the primary will help move this along because there is and we talk about this a lot where it's like it's just like the wrong side of history kind of stuff where it's like you're just wrong and like obviously you're like like you're lashing out and there's this backlash about all this sort of this stuff and d santus is a really fucked up guy and like an authoritarian twerp it's his way or no way and he's being influenced by these again like libs of tiktok is like as big in his ear and stuff like that but it's not popular nationwide and the reason he's able to get a lot of this stuff done is because he's in florida and he has like doesn't have like a super
Starting point is 00:31:58 majority in florida so he can do these things but if he were to say become the president he won't be able to do a lot of these things because it's not popular except in his state a little bit and he has the legislature behind him but he won't have that like he's not gonna have a super majority in congress if he becomes the president which he won't because he doesn't have the juice but it's this kind of thing where it's like the more it becomes prominent on the national stage and you see like even a year of its effect on people. And like we'll get to the Shakespeare stuff, things like that, where it's like people start to realize like, oh, the restrictions you're putting on this affect everything in a way that's like kind of fucked up and weird. But, you know, also, who knows? Maybe he'll make America, Florida like he wants to.
Starting point is 00:32:45 but you know also who knows maybe uh he'll make america florida like he wants to and before we move on to like it there are like two topics here and one is like what they are teaching and one is what they're no longer teaching uh and there's some intersection there um and one thing that they are no longer allowed to teach as much is uh shakespeare because of the sexual content it's so are in these plays and this is something again it's the kind of thing where like we've said this from the beginning well if you can't talk about this then you can't do like musicals you can't do plays you can't do shakespeare shakespeare is filthy that's part of it actually um and he's very clever talking about a return to um american values you know it's very important to these people shakespeare predates america's existence like you are wrong well but also there's there was this um during the crt panic uh there was a lot of uh and there
Starting point is 00:33:41 probably still is a lot of like rumblings and people complaining like so like you're not like I've seen like some of these lib art schools and they're no longer they're not even teaching Shakespeare anymore. They're teaching like other authors and like authors of color and stuff and like they're like diversification of curriculum in terms of literature has occurred. And that really upset some people because you're not teaching shakespeare anymore but it's shakespeare well now what now what now what folks so i guess they're doing some um some teachers are choosing to just do excerpts instead of full plays because the full plays are raunchy it's just not all of them but like yeah look education in florida i don't i worry for florida i worry i'm worried for florida and for for kids growing up because i mean just sell your house and move it's yeah just move everybody it's such a beautiful part of my personal personally childhood is
Starting point is 00:34:40 discovering and getting into shakespeare and learning how i thought you meant florida sorry no god no i've never been to florida i'm sure it's beautiful it's beautiful and you start to understand language in a different way and you certainly aren't going to figure out how to uh read and comprehend shakespeare by reading excerpts because it won't really make sense you know not the most educational aren't like they're avoiding the stuff in shakespeare that is kind of uncomfortable from a modern perspective but aren't these people isn't the whole thing that oh you can't judge you can't judge people in the past from our perspective can't you just put it in context and show the movie do the thing keep the keep the statues up keep all the stuff up right oh it's stupid
Starting point is 00:35:30 they're putting a disclaimer before temple of doom yeah like uh desantis yeah it's very confusing yeah well they're very confused so why don't you guys walk? What are they teaching then? What are they? I do want to set up this PragerU thing. Yeah. Most of our listeners probably know that PragerU is Dennis Prager's not accredited university and it's just a conservative advocacy group. But they have these like videos for kids and a quote unquote curriculum that is now accepted by florida's department of education for teaching kids yeah and i want to this has been floating around a little bit i want to get your reaction to this clip uh of a prager you kids video about christopher columbus please hold while we hold um i just want to mention and like our listeners have we've done videos about PragerU back in the day, like five years ago, we did a video about PragerU and Kanye and how like it's an indoctrination machine.
Starting point is 00:36:35 And look here where we are. PragerU for adults is like messed up and wrong and sneaky in the way it gets its information uh and misinformation out there and so just imagine what the kid version is how like how like sneaky and delicate they are um and here we are this is a 45 second clip and this is like a couple of kids that have gone back in time and are talking to christopher columbus on one of the boats of which we all know the names. Ah, in Europe, we draw the line at things like eating people and human sacrifice. Some of the native folks from where I just left do those things regularly.
Starting point is 00:37:15 Oh my God. So these people in your time who think it was a peaceful paradise are misinformed or lying. Yeah, but what about slavery? You didn't deny that. Deny? No. Slavery is as old as time and has taken place in every corner of the world, even amongst the people I just left. Being taken as a slave is better than being killed, no? I don't see the problem.
Starting point is 00:37:41 Bro, you don't see the problem! Well, in our time, we time slavery is being evil and terrible ah magnifical that's wonderful i am glad humanity has reached such a time i am so horrified i that is um it's unsurprising um that is it's so it's interesting because i'm sure listeners also remember uh maybe like four years ago five years ago the daily wire ran a cartoon about christopher columbus and native americans and a lot of the points being made in this prager you for kids seg like this little clip i'm sure like it's all over the entire video are about these sort of things like, well, yeah, we didn't do this. And like, at least we didn't eat people and this kind of thing.
Starting point is 00:38:29 And people were like, upset about it because it's like wrongheaded and it's all the reasons. And after the outrage, editor in chief of Daily Wire, I can't think of his name right now. Weird voice, obnoxious guy has opinions. Not ringing a bell. I can't think of his name right now the weird voice uh obnoxious guy has opinions not ringing a bell i can't think of it who cares anyway but he popped up after the weekend i didn't know this video sorry i'll do an impression of him i didn't know this video and he took it down and said it was satire it was bad satire but it was satire we took it down and sorry blah blah it won't happen again and now here we are and they're just doing it and like showing it officially to kids yeah um in school uh even sneakier and uh it's just uh how far we've come i guess is my point what a tragedy
Starting point is 00:39:20 god i'm a little speechless i'm not speechless i've been talking we've been talking about this for quite a while now but uh it seeing that is horrifying to me and like to make christopher columbus like seem kindly and like he's happy that we've progressed that's the thing the idea that christopher columbus would hear that slavery is abolished and him him his response being oh great i'm glad humanity has gotten to that point no read his fucking journal like that like even if you want to frame it like slavery was a thing that existed and like people progress i'm not saying okay but okay christopher columbus would not think that it's good that slavery was abolished he'd be like but we need the slaves look at these inferior creatures that we can enslave is what he would say and think he'd be like so he's taking
Starting point is 00:40:10 like the video go jack off because i'm so hard for fucking up slaves like that's what christopher columbus would have said the idea because isn't their whole thing like yeah like attitudes change and like they they had this view and now now we don't and it's good that we don't so illustrate that illustrate that christopher columbus himself would not agree with getting rid of slavery because he thinks that other people are inferior and we should enslave them excuse me mr prager we've got some notes got some notes dennis within 20 seconds of this video columbus is both like oh i'm glad slavery doesn't exist in the future but then he's like well slavery is normal in our time but at least
Starting point is 00:40:50 we're not doing this worse thing what's the i don't see what the price says i don't see what the problem is it's so it's so like internally contradictory and on its face contradictory and so weird and just like within the video it doesn't make any sense but also within like the complaints that they have about history and how we teach it is it's contradictory to that too um it's just a mess and if your kids are watching this i'm so sorry and if it's being played for your third grader in a florida public school yes we sorry. There's nothing else we can do about that. I'm so sorry. If it is, I think that you should homeschool your children.
Starting point is 00:41:29 Katie coming back around on homeschooling. I'm just like. Actually, homeschooling isn't so bad. If my kids. I know. We're going to school somewhere and they were teaching that bullshit. I'm making jokes about this, but like what a horror. Because not everybody would be able to do
Starting point is 00:41:46 it i wouldn't be able to homeschool and i don't have kids and i don't want in florida but like what an impossible situation you want your you have to work around too because like they've they're all their their whole thing is that like the left is indoctrinating our kids and they have been since the department of education indoctrinating our kids, and they have been since the Department of Education existed. This is actual indoctrination. And it's obvious that this is actual indoctrination, and the lies within just that one video, and Christopher Columbus saying, oh, I'm glad slavery is no longer a thing. Like, give me a fucking break. Ridiculous sex. Regardless of that, you can find clips of Dennis Pra prager talking about like the ah they learn doctor
Starting point is 00:42:26 anything kids and like we need to do it instead like that's what their response is like no we need to indoctrinate kids actually we're going to do it instead is their response to it so i don't know seems like maybe they're just uh dishonest and authoritarian and uh if somebody disagrees with them that means they're i don't know commies antifa i don't know and all public schools have traditionally wanted to do is indoctrinate kids into things that happened into letting them know that the things happened the indoctrination of knowing things instead of people can't our listeners can't see this but in this you know animated video christopher col Christopher Columbus has crystal blue eyes. Oh, yeah.
Starting point is 00:43:07 I mean, the color of the sky, like Elijah Wood in the Lord of the Rings movies. Yeah, piercing. Dreamy blue. It's like the kind of eyes you fall in love with, honestly. It's those Cillian Murphy eyes. Do not get me started on Cillian. Too late. Get started. But yeah, no, it's absurd in so many ways and uh i don't even like that was 25 seconds that we watched like uh so just imagine all the other
Starting point is 00:43:38 amazing factoids you can learn if you go to an elementary school in florida um i mean right we could literally do a segment every week that's like here's 30 seconds from another prager you video that they want to like teach to kids this is absurd get really angry but like that's all it would do is make you really all it's all it does anymore i like it's like i don't know i'm not betsy defoss she's still the Secretary of Education, right? DeVos? Biden kept her around. Kept DeJoy around.
Starting point is 00:44:11 DeVos is out. Yeah, yeah, yeah. That is, yeah. So the whole, I don't know, education's important, but maybe not this style of education. But I think to wrap it up, put a little bow on it, it does seem like these things are again maybe not to somebody who's subscribed to uh x premium or whatever the fuck they're
Starting point is 00:44:32 gonna call it now but most people can sort of see this and go wait that's like that's weird that's not right that's not and it's also not even like the thing that they're originally mad about like it's this backlash that's going too far the other way to that makes it appear absurd um so i don't know i'm hoping that once uh once people see desantis laugh enough uh and then instantly change his face to a weird hellish scowl in like a half a second i think people will be turned off by it um also all trump needs to do is point out that uh jonathan informed me of this yesterday uh so we said desantis and we try to keep it 100 desantis because that's how it's pronounced that's how his name is pronounced uh but everyone says desantis because that's what it looks like uh and he says desantis sometimes apparently uh he changed it
Starting point is 00:45:30 because it was too hard to correct no one else has said this before or we've just i don't know if we pointed this out uh we've posited we've certainly talked about it a lot but we were we were asked on an even more cues why we said desantis and cody was like oh he used to say it that way and he no longer does and axios did this that's so interesting in june where they kind of embarrassing they dug into this and they found that during his first campaign and original campaign for governor he exclusively said de santis and then started going with de santis and then they asked his campaign staff about it and a campaign staffer years ago said the candidate prefers de santis and nowadays the last few years they refuse to say what he prefers and they just ignore those questions so i guess
Starting point is 00:46:20 they i guess de santis pulled not so well and so they go with de santis it's just one of those things where it's like all trump needs to do is got be like he doesn't even know how to say his name like he doesn't know he doesn't know he doesn't know how to pronounce his own name what a weak leader we are going to wrap things up today with some positive news. Yeah. Ohio represent home state. Ohio. Oh, right. I always forget that you're from Ohio. That's right.
Starting point is 00:46:50 What happened in Ohio on Tuesday? Well, Ohio had a special election. They had a great album come out from one of their alums. Call back. Is there a home of Cody Johnston sign outside of your hometown? Oh, there are a bunch that they may have taken down because I put them there. I don't know exactly where in Ohio you're from, so I imagine it says home of LeBron James and then underneath Cody Johnston. And I think Cody's from there, yeah.
Starting point is 00:47:24 special election on Tuesday, voters were weighing in on issue one, which was a measure which would have raised the threshold to pass a state constitutional amendment from 50% to 60%. Republicans put this measure together as a way to make it harder for voters to pass an amendment this November enshrining abortion rights into the state constitution. Very transparently. Sneaky, sneaky. Very obvious what was going on. Yes. Yes.
Starting point is 00:47:44 They presented it as sneaky they thought they were being very sneaky yeah they they thought they were saying oh we're trying to keep out of state wealthy out-of-state interests out of ohio politics but it was very clear they just wanted to make it harder to pass this amendment this november uh issue one failed 57 of ohioans voting voted no. Ohioans? Is that right? Ohioans. Ohioans?
Starting point is 00:48:08 I don't know. Well, that is very good news. It's good news and it suggests that there's a very high likelihood that that abortion rights amendment is going to pass this November. So once again, it seems like the supreme court done screwed up yeah maybe people don't actually like it maybe you're kind of uh fighting the face of democracy with your actions um yeah it's uh it's great people really came out to uh vote this down um there was a a very concerted effort and again it was i think it was helpful because it was it was very obvious what they were trying to do like even the ads uh a lot of the ads like for the like vote yes on one was like they're trying to teach trans to
Starting point is 00:48:57 your kids they're trying like it was literally just like trans and abortion uh those were the things they were trying to fear monger about um and uh again every step of the way it really does seem like most people in the country are put off by all the freaks who are obsessed with those uh issues and actually are against that third of the country. So yeah, good job, Buckeyes. Good job, Ohio-ians. Ians? Nope. Oians. Good job, Oians. Ahoy-ians. Ahoy-ians. It's surprising that
Starting point is 00:49:35 so many Republicans are doubling down on something that is wildly unpopular. They like winning. I don't quite understand it. And demonstrably. it like every step of the way where it's like at this certain point you think like somebody would be like this isn't working actually like this is not working for us um but they don't seem to ever let that click i'm you know more power to well not more power to them but less power to them but like go for it go for
Starting point is 00:50:01 it because then that will equal less power to them so it's very it's very weird that they don't seem to realize that yet they just really well that's the thing it's like it's one of those things like they because they you know ultimately to them it's like just power they want power they want more power but also they want more power to stop these things to do these things right like it seems it just seems more and more like it's true believer stuff where it's like yeah this is just what you think and you're finding out slowly that a lot of people don't agree with you and democracy will prevail that feels like a good note to wrap things up yeah it does i just have to
Starting point is 00:50:39 say that we will be off next week because it's Cody and I both our birthdays. It's both of our birthdays. Not the same day, but the same day. Very, very close together. And we, I think, unpacked this last week. Yeah, it's fine. We don't need that. You guys all know.
Starting point is 00:50:54 But just so you know, it's our birthday and we won't be recording. We won't be podcasting. But then we'll be back the week after that. To do some podcasting but then we'll be back the week after that to do some podcasting and um and uh after this show uh apparently check out i guess maybe the final song on the hit album by the hot shapes uh because the episode started with the first song so we'll maybe close it out with the last It's called So Right On. Bookend it. And. And. Also. Also. Just gotta say. Just gotta say.
