Starting point is 00:00:00 hello hello hi welcome back too. Welcome back to you too. To another episode of Even More News. I'm Cody Johnston. No you needed to do it like Cody Johnston! Cody, Cody, Cody, Johnston, Johnston, Johnston. Middle name redacted, redacted, redacted. We do not have a guest this week, but what we do have is Jonathan. Spicy. Jonathan. I'm here. I'm here.
Starting point is 00:00:59 Yeah. Oh, boy. You sure are. We've been just talking for the past hour and a half. Indeed. I think we still got juice in the tank Oh, we still got juice It's just the bottom of the juice With all the pulp and the brine
Starting point is 00:01:14 Extra sugar, extra nutrients That's right The nutrient you need, sugar Yep Just pipe it straight into the veins. You know what? Actually, I'm not off of sugar. Jonathan, you might not know this about me, but Cody certainly does, that I have a sweet
Starting point is 00:01:32 tooth. But for some reason lately, not feeling it. It's good. It is good. I'm only on sugar. I only eat candy now. What's your candy or indulgence of choice? If you were on the sugar train.
Starting point is 00:01:49 Yeah, if you were eating it right now. I mean, it's not that I'm not eating sugar. It's just that I'm not craving it the way I used to. But ice cream? Give me that ice cream and then maybe put some chocolate chips on top of it or a cookie. I like to fuck with an ice cream and then maybe put some like chocolate chips on top of it or like a cookie i like to fuck with like an ice cream situation i like just you know all of it i'm not the biggest chocolate person though just on its own like see a chocolate bar sitting there and not like give me it but if i saw like fruity candy yeah i'd be all about all about it. Like a Skittle or a Starburst.
Starting point is 00:02:26 Less so a Skittle, a Starburst. A Skittle, a Starburst, a nerd. A nerd. A single nerd. One nerd. That's all you really need. A nerd rope. Yeah, a nerd rope.
Starting point is 00:02:38 A Gumi bear. Oh, yeah, that's the one. A Gumi bear? Okay, yeah. Actually, I don't know if I've talked about this on this show, but if I did, it was a while ago. Well, I feel like I might. Do you have a type five on gummy bears? Well, I've got a type 30 seconds.
Starting point is 00:02:53 Excellent. Have you ever taken your gummy bears and stuck them in the freezer? Oh, you have talked about this. See? No. Why haven't you? Cody, you're like my best friend. I don't have gummy bears.
Starting point is 00:03:03 Buy them. I'll postmate you some. Send me gummy bears and I'll put them in the freezer. I have given you gummy bears. Buy them. I'll postmate you some. Send me gummy bears and I'll put them in the freezer. I have given you gummy bears and I'm pretty sure I've put them in your freezer in the past. Maybe. I have CBD gummies. What are really good is if you go to Sprouts and get the scoop, kind of like a candy store, but they have a bunch of sesame snacks and all that stuff.
Starting point is 00:03:22 Their gummy bears are the perfect amount of like soft and chewy and bite into them. They're not too hard. They'd probably be good in the freezer, though. I've never done it. Well, you should. It's time. Tell you what. You know, I have converted a lot of people, even people that are like, oh, why?
Starting point is 00:03:39 They do it. They go, you know what? I get it. It slows you down a bit. It slows you down. Exactly slows you down exactly you get like five gummy bears but like you've eaten them and they take a minute you pace it out like a jolly rancher soften soften a bit but they're better cold i'm sorry this is this is a hill i will die on and that has been uh don't apologize yeah snack snack snacks with kat Katie. I have had people reach out saying they've tried different snacks that I've made.
Starting point is 00:04:06 And I got to tell you guys, I love to hear it. Makes my day. I do feel like maybe if this all falls apart, I could reinvent myself as a snack fluencer. Snack fluencer, exactly. Get your gummy bears in the freezer. Let us know if you like it or if you don't like it and what you did or didn't like about it.
Starting point is 00:04:32 And that's it. I'm not going to compile all of these answers, but we'll look at them. You'll express yourselves about the gummy bear situation and we won't respond. I might. I might hurt it we'll address yeah we'll address the issues but if you tell me that you've tried it and that you didn't like it
Starting point is 00:04:54 i will know you are a liar so if you want to out yourself as a liar respond to the gummy bear situation with dislike also it depends on the kind of gummy you get. You know, not all gummies are created equal, as Jonathan has established with, you know, the Sprouts plug. Sprouts, you said? Yeah, I like a Sprouts gummy bear. Sounds healthy.
Starting point is 00:05:17 For those of you, I bet very few people know that Sprouts is a market. It's a grocery store chain. Like, a little cheaper than others, but healthy. Like a health food store. Headquarters in Phoenix, Arizona. It's like a Whole Foods, but less upcharge. It's cheaper than a Whole Foods for sure.
Starting point is 00:05:35 Yeah. You got store locations in Alabama, in Arizona, in California, Colorado, Delaware, Florida, Georgia, Kansas, Louisiana, Maryland, Missouri, Nevada, New Jersey, New Mexico, North Carolina, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, Utah, Virginia, and Washington State. Wow. That's a pretty good swath of the country. That's where all those sprouts are. We don't know how many locations are in each state, but they do have a location.
Starting point is 00:05:58 They do have at least a location in all of those states. I just knew that off the top of my head. in all of those states. I just knew that off the top of my head. Today is January 26th. And as we all know, January 26th is National Clash and Clothes Day. Yes, everybody knows this.
Starting point is 00:06:16 Okay, thank you. I am not celebrating it currently. I have actually, very coordinated, I'd say. My beanie kind of matches my jacket which kind of matches my oh yeah you're like you're all set to not celebrate this day do uh the boys know this i think i don't know if you do well our director will knows this i tend to to dress uh i i've taken a bold stance in my background art and I never am not somewhat coordinated to it.
Starting point is 00:06:49 I do see that. Because it looks too weird if you're wearing a bright red in front of this like pink and brown thing. Sure. Does my magenta sweater look weird in front of my what cream colored wall? No. Question. See? That coordinates. Also, it kind of picks up some of the floral tones of your curtains. weird in front of my what cream colored wall no question see coordinates also kind of picks up some of the floral tones of your curtains
Starting point is 00:07:09 I don't think I didn't notice that it coordinates with your curtains Cody's not clashing but he's not coordinating I'm not I'm clashing if I reveal my lounge pants that's real bad yeah yeah he's got like a plaid no what is that shirt it's a pants. That's real bad. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:07:25 Yeah. He's got like a plaid. No, what is that shirt? It's a solid. That's not real bad, but. Solid. And then I'm wearing a different pink shirt. Not the Some More News pink shirt. A different pink shirt.
Starting point is 00:07:36 A different pink shirt. This is an audio medium. And I am sure we are all enjoying this. Some people can hear colors colors all my synesthesia heads out there this is for you to our anesthesia synesthesia it's like uh it's not exclusively hear colors or see like numbers as colors or sounds but it's like various different perceptions um some people must be both they are seeing the words and feeling no pain that's true at the moment yeah i bet i bet there is some overlap there on occasion and then january 27th the day of this release wow national big
Starting point is 00:08:22 wig day i was gonna say I'm so familiar with January 26th and 27th holidays And we Definitely need to clarify Just in case There's a common Common common Misconception
Starting point is 00:08:32 That National Big Wig Day Is about the big boss You know And you know like Like if this was This is not Big boss day This isn't for boss baby
Starting point is 00:08:41 No this is for Literally Your biggest wigs Bring them out Tease them up Take them for a spin This isn't for Boss Baby. No, this is for literally your biggest wigs. Bring them out. Tease them up. Take them for a spin. This is their day.
Starting point is 00:08:53 They've been sitting in the closet since Halloween or whenever. And it's their time to shine, guys. All right. We did it. We talked about it. We did it. We celebrated. Well, we talked about celebrating.
Starting point is 00:09:03 I'm not wearing a wig right now. Did you know that a lot of people leave their laundry hanging outside at night? They probably just forgot it's there, but if you go house to house, that's a lot of free clothes. It's legal when it's outside. Anyway, that's why I sleep during the day, which can be difficult. And so I use NextEvo Naturals and their CBD products. They help with stuff like stress relief and trouble sleeping and with their Smart Sorb CBD which they claim is proven for 30 times better absorption in the first 30 minutes. It works in no time. I can attest to this because I love their Smart Sorb CBD. It really knocks me out whenever I need to nap.
Starting point is 00:09:45 Most days I use the clothes that I find to make a big nest to nap in. But even then, it's not easy to relax. Oh, we don't have a guest today
Starting point is 00:10:26 as has already been established. How the heck are you guys? What's going on? Heckin' fine. Check out the show. Jonathan wrote this week's episode. Check that out. Yeah, about housing.
Starting point is 00:10:44 That was an intense, deep dive. a intense deep dive yeah it was a complicated issue it's hard to you want to be able to just say like just make more and let people live there but you can't just say that yeah like in general do that but also it's extremely difficult and there's been a lot of people and a lot of groups working on this issue a lot longer than we have so it's like hey pay attention to all these people who are working on this and kind of throw up your hands because the capitalism is what's uh yeah preventing it from being solved yeah i feel like we should uh just continue with this trend of just sort of like, here are all the things on like the very bottom of the hierarchy of needs that we as a society in the 21st century should just like agree,
Starting point is 00:11:31 like let's all try to make sure we all have at least these things. We're all, you know, we're a nation that claims to be all about freedom. And if you have those basic needs yet, you're more free to fulfill uh so many other aspects of your life that will improve society in other ways and housing is there we got food we did some water i always come think about like you're only as strong as your weakest links thing and it's like there's a country in crisis we need to take care of the basic needs of people so that,
Starting point is 00:12:06 which is better for everybody. If you want to put it on their terms, like, you know, like, yeah, we talk about that a lot. So many things you,
Starting point is 00:12:12 if you do them for, if you make these people's lives better, it will make your life better too. If that's how you have to have it framed. Right. Right. Well, good job on that,
Starting point is 00:12:22 Jonathan. Good job. There will be more housing episodes it is really hard to encapsulate the full scope of a topic like that only one elon reference in the episode how about that well just one i have to mention your bricks since you've been working on that with him for so long yeah yeah it's still it's still in development don't worry we're gonna drop those uh dirt bricks for poor people any day now and also the like it's still it's still in development don't worry we're gonna drop those uh dirt bricks for poor people any day now and also the like it's like not an episode about the it's not an episode about unhoused people because it's like that's a symptom of this broader problem so that's you know that's
Starting point is 00:12:55 a separate episode there's like yeah which will there will be exactly i was thinking that the other every every day for a long time actually like we uh will be doing an episode on that specifically um yeah especially that one guy who's going around tearing people's uh like tents down in la have you seen that he just like posts videos of himself like just like tearing down homeless people's tents and stuff and being like proud of it it's there's like a huge and like matt walsh's tweets like there's like a sect of like people who are more and more willing to just say outright like we just want to like execute people who like gross me out or bother cruelty to our out group is like a huge thing with them yeah and it's just like the recently i've just seen so many things from him specifically, but people in that realm of like, we can't go down this path.
Starting point is 00:13:49 This is not how we should be talking about these people. Anyway, we don't need to talk about the other show more. Which is now available in your podcast feed as an audio format. If YouTube is not your thing. Check it out. Patreon.com. Oh, boy. Oh, oh boy here we go again promoting ourselves how are you doing katie anything for you to promote
Starting point is 00:14:12 just uh you know promoting the general idea of uh being a good person and like, you know. Rock and roll. Peace and shit, man. Yeah. Right on, right on, right on. Yeah, I'll promote the hell out of that. Yeah, yeah, yeah. Me too, me too, me too, me too, me too, me too.
Starting point is 00:14:37 Couple of hams over here, you and me. Yeah, but let's talk about Mike Pence. Mike Tents. Mike Tents. Mike is Pence. Mike Pence. Mike Pence. Mike Pence. He should be Pence now. Mike Pence. I feel like he always is tense, right?
Starting point is 00:14:50 It's like that dude needs to relax. Making sure he's not talking to a woman. Maybe his annex. Yeah. He's wound up tight. Yeah. Furious about Mulan still, I assume. Not tight enough.
Starting point is 00:15:00 He's not wound up tight enough to have been organized enough to not take classified documents home with him. I got there. Yeah, we did it. Next week will be Pompeo and then it'll be Dan Quayle. We're going to keep doing this once a week for a year. So lawyers for Mike Pence discovered about a dozen classified documents at his home in Indiana last week. They turned those documents over to the FBI, so he
Starting point is 00:15:29 becomes the latest former president or vice president to have a bunch of classified documents at his home or office. So it immediately turns to like, what's the story on this? And I, you know, my feeling is that democrats would be happy
Starting point is 00:15:45 for this issue to just be a wash they're like okay we're not gonna nail trump on this stuff and biden's got his documents kerfuffle and now pence and we can just uh roll over on this but republicans are definitely leaning in and trying to make it that like the trump and pence documents are no big deal but the biden documents those are the big wait how the mental gymnastics do that you can say it's all bad but you can't say that trump like i would argue that they can because they do it all the time they do it all the time the messaging seems to work that's not this this this isn't new it's not new it's just like that's absurd dumb it's very dumb he didn't he like kept him after being asked like so many times like it's not at all this whatever yeah the true i mean still the trump ones are so vastly
Starting point is 00:16:42 different because the biden ones and the pence ones once they were discovered they were they were returned they did a whole thing and now the national archives is just like okay any former president or vice president please go through your shit mass email to all former vice presidents yeah if you're around i know carter they're they maybe like back in the day, Carter had some stuff. Yeah, I saw something today about Carter possibly having some. Yeah, this is like a problem. We joked about it yesterday. We sure did.
Starting point is 00:17:15 But it turns out he's got some. I think they all have some. I know Obama says he doesn't. Yeah, it's one of those things where it's like, okay, you're going to talk about how maybe too many things are classified? Or are you going to say that all these presidents and vice presidents broke the law and they're going to face consequences? Or some magical third thing where Biden is impeached for this and Trump is the president
Starting point is 00:17:43 again or something like that? Like, what is this third option that uh they're pretending they don't care they just want to do what they can to get attention while they have this story they're not actually going to expect anything right it's just something that they can add to the whole lexicon of why dems are satan but trump is an angel there's a we'll maybe we'll play it later maybe we won't maybe we don't want to subject our listeners to it but there's a clip uh of fucking tucker carlson uh talking about the eminem thing and it's uh laced with all these little
Starting point is 00:18:18 phrases and words and like ideas uh throughout this ridiculous thing about m&ms where it's this language that they in have in their ecosystem this shorthand of like the dems are this way and this and this word that makes you angry right and it's like peppering in all this language and these like non-stories or like this reference to like a story that turned out to be what you know you know i'm talking about um and it's this just seems like the kind of thing where it's like oh story that turned out to be what, you know, you know, I'm talking about. And it's, this just seems like the kind of thing where it's like, oh, you're just adding to the pile of things you can reference as like,
Starting point is 00:18:50 oh, the scandal of this when it's like, well, you're just misrepresenting it. And now it's just another touch. It's another rage phrase to use the next time. Right. Exactly.
Starting point is 00:19:01 The next time, like when Skittles is like, actually laptop. Yeah. All that kind of stuff. Do you want to listen to Jesse Waters talking about this stuff? Yes and no. No, because... God, no. But yes, because we should.
Starting point is 00:19:17 It's interesting and funny in a way. It's 30 seconds. Would love to hear your reactions. Joking. I mean, Pence, seriously. We have this great thing going with Joe. Yeah, and he just ruined it. Come on, man.
Starting point is 00:19:32 Well, what are we going to do? And then he confessed to it. I mean, he could have just destroyed it. We never would have known. And we have to be fair and balanced and show both sides. I know. Now we have to show both sides. And you know Pence is so clean.
Starting point is 00:19:49 He is clean. Squeaky clean it's nothing like the real bad documents that joe biden was squirreling away do you think he just wanted to be included greg gutfeld is so unpleasant to listen to and watch and you know what everyone on that table agrees with you i think like anybody laughing is like ah ha ha you know yeah he's just like going so overboard he really is you mentioned how desperate he is and you are correct that clip is interesting to me because um obviously like they're it's like a joke and they know they're joking and like oh wouldn't it be great haha we're having a fun time but also they're saying the thing that is true yep like it's a joke to them but also it's not they're saying the thing that they wish they could they could do like oh we gotta be fair and balanced
Starting point is 00:20:36 yeah we know that you you're not and you're pretending that you have to be like it's also very weird like oh we had this good thing going with joe it's like did you like it's a weird way to talk about it because it completely ignores and deletes the memory of all the trump doc stuff that happened before biden where it's like mike pence is not the new like the differences between the way that they handled it again Again, that's not me giving Biden a pass on this bullshit at all. But like, yeah, they just conveniently are able to forget. And no one seems to care enough to call him out on it. Yeah, it's like they're not capable of like even just admitting like, yeah, this whole thing is like this silly debacle.
Starting point is 00:21:23 Maybe we should reconsider how we do this or this or this but also like obviously trump was had these docs requested for a long time and refused and they had to go get them uh whereas these other two people one who's mike pence found them and gave them back immediately and it's just one other places which is so embarrassing yeah they're upset not because of like what it means about classified documents or national security or whatever it is they're upset because they're like well that screws up our next 72 hours of outrage cycle and we have that all planned out yeah and like them like making a joke out of it is them saying the thing that they really feel but being able to play it off as a joke well yeah, yeah, Gutfeld's thing is just like, he sees that Jesse Waters is doing a bit,
Starting point is 00:22:09 and he's like, I want to get in on that bit. He's getting laughs. And like, I don't like either of these guys. But I think Jesse Waters is funnier than Greg Gutfeld. And I think that hurts. Yeah, no, he is. Yeah, I think a lot because it like I feel for him with that. Like, I got to scream the thing you said louder i gotta get on this bit so it has nothing to do with the story it's just i i'm embarrassed for the guy yeah as you should be it's so hard it's painful i i don't want to watch him do that embarrass himself um yeah it's just a bizarre like just don't talk about it if you can't like like what this jim jordan quote about how uh pence and trump were cooperating but biden and the fbi were conspiring
Starting point is 00:22:51 to keep the documents hidden what are you talking about just a complete excuse me revision what well it's yeah yeah that's just making stuff are you just allowed to i mean obviously you are allowed to say that but like right over and over and over and over and over again people just yeah we know anyway uh congratulations to all presidents and vice presidents for i don't know getting away with not crimes whatever this suggestion update looks like the thing i we are giving them all a one month grace period to like come clean with any documents they may or may not have well the national archives didn't say that but they're just like hey uh now that this seems to be an issue that we yeah exactly if you've been
Starting point is 00:23:37 in high level of government maybe check your sock drawer for some nuclear secrets. God, seriously. Whoopsies. But also, it's like, are we just stamping everything classified? I feel like that's got to be a little bit. Some of this stuff has to be unimportant. Oh, yeah, that's part of it, right? Nonsense. I think, and like, you know, it seems like maybe Trump had like nuclear, the information about like nuclear capabilities of other countries and stuff. And, but I think that like, it is a situation where like yeah everything is marked classified
Starting point is 00:24:05 and they're like again it's like either that conversation should be had and like maybe reconsider how you classify stuff or like how like what you do with those those files like there's something to be done about the system there clearly otherwise how are these people just able to take boxes of these documents that are allegedly like very dangerous and in people's hands, or that system is good and how it should be. And all these presidents broke the law and need to like be held accountable for it. Right.
Starting point is 00:24:36 Which is it? It's one or the other. And within that, like, Oh, they broke the law. There are obviously degrees of that because again, some people found
Starting point is 00:24:45 them and immediately gave them back and some people knew they had them in their like fucking like country club closet so they can brag about them to their friend jeff who owns a couple of car dealerships at like a party ah it's it's funny how we can go through a story about like classified docs and then it's like oh by, by the way, it's different because Trump like said he declassified them randomly and then lied and said he gave them all back and didn't like there's just 10 different levels to the Trump part of the story. Yeah, so it's like such a straightforward thing, except for this fucking freak who was president for years who like just says whatever and then does whatever and then lies about both of those things but you know at least he's showing how little political will there is for anybody to like change any of that yeah seriously well that's the other thing yeah where it's like it's this uh we've talked about it before where that era of trump especially the
Starting point is 00:25:41 first like year or two where like he would do a thing and uh you know people would be up in arms i can't believe trump did this or said this or i can't believe they're doing this at the white house and then like historians and like political experts will come out and be like this is a thing that presidents do if you don't like and it's like if you don't like it it's either because you are you find trump distasteful or because it's just bad and you shouldn't have like presidents shouldn't be able to do that. And he's still doing it. Even out of office, he's still, like, showing us the things that maybe we should reconsider.
Starting point is 00:26:14 Yeah, and it certainly shows to me who actually cares about shit or who is just participating in an outrage cycle reaction to something Trump did. Well, okay. Yeah yeah team sports stuff like are we sports like do you actually care are you just gonna keep jumping are you gonna do the the left the liberal version of what they do on jesse waters just yeah exactly like why don't you have a fucking conversation about it we're not this isn't a reflection of you it's a reflection it's a conversation about what we expect from leadership anywho anywho i real quick this is unrelated but i saw a clip of trump from uh a couple of years ago a few years ago after he uh got coveted and i like i memory hold this or something it's him
Starting point is 00:27:01 saying maybe i'm immune i can't i can't believe he said that he's just he's just a president he's like maybe i'm immune to the disease like what how do you i i can't believe that happened and i can't believe i forgot about it it's just such a funny thing for a president to say about like this virus. He will say anything he wants. He'll say that he doesn't know who Silk is. Oh my god, that too! And then complain about how long the memorial service was going. They told me 15 minutes.
Starting point is 00:27:36 In and out 15 minutes. This has been a lot longer than 15 minutes. So, what a character. Okay, this seems around the time the episodes where we usually break for ads but we're not going to haha fuck you uh there's no ad today uh we just don't have a second ad um or oh boo so if you'd like to always have no ads, then check out our Patreon dot com slash some more news for ad free versions of the podcast you're listening to and the YouTube show you hopefully watch. Please watch it also. And now back to the show.
Starting point is 00:28:22 And we are back, as promised promised for even more news this is horrifying news that you all probably know by now um we are going to talk about the mass shootings in california i mean everywhere but uh there was there was a a couple big ones here in california and as this broke and as we were deciding what to talk about this week you know obviously this is high on the list it's it's big news it's also really hard to keep having the same fucking conversation and you know i don't know it's it's it's hard to sit down and and do this over and over again and have nothing of value to add or feel a little powerless with it all i am now as frustrated i'm frustrated with everybody's reactions, you know, like everybody that, you know, the outrage resharing that onion
Starting point is 00:29:25 article, you know, saying the GOP, you know, blah, blah, blah. And it's like, yes, well, they certainly play a big part of this. But, you know, it's all so fucking complex. And none of us like I don't think any of us here sitting here knows that much about gun laws in reality. And it feels like an overwhelming puzzle to unpack. But there is a missed opportunity, I think, especially with these shootings this week, which we'll get into the details. Like, we don't talk enough about some of the other reasons why this keeps happening. I don't,'t you know or someone might just say mental health and it's like no this is actually like in my opinion kind of a symptom of
Starting point is 00:30:14 of capitalism of of everything that we've been going through for the last forever uh the stratification of wealth of people being desperate of loneliness of uh fear and anxiety and being you know i mean yeah and having access to uh weapons that instantly instantly kill yes i'm just saying that that people all go through the same thing of like of pointing a finger when and and yeah sure that's part of it but like i just every time this happens i'm thinking not in like defense of anybody but i'm thinking of like how fucked up everything is for so many people and how uh desperate they are and i don't know you know yeah i mean there's so many factors that go into uh this and it's just it's like you said and i don't know you know yeah i mean there's so many factors that go into uh this and it's just
Starting point is 00:31:06 it's like you said and i don't much of anything to add because it is kind of overwhelming and depressing and i don't like i i don't want to say i'm like defeatist about it but it just like just these past several stories like okay so now like little kids are doing it not like they're not like there's no like five-year-old with a manifesto but like it's you know kids doing shootings uh teenagers people in the 30s now people like older than 60 and it's like everybody is like getting in on it and it happens so regularly and it's easy to say like the goP is stopping anything to be done, which is true. But it's just like we as like it's just what a failed society that we have now where it feels like just it's what is like what's it going to take? And it seems like nothing.
Starting point is 00:31:58 It seems like there's no like there's no cap on what we're willing to take. There's no like number of you know we saw i mean we even saw with covid where it's like what's the number of deaths deaths where we're like actually we should like do more to to stop this there's so many shootings all the time and even people like in the gop were like it's mental health you're not doing shit for that anyway right so like you're not doing anything. And it just doesn't seem like there's a number of shootings a day or a week or a month that will be the magic number to do anything. This is a part of American culture now, I think. I think that this is now what it means to be an American.
Starting point is 00:32:46 With COVID, it was the opposite. We hit a certain number and that's when it's like, okay, checking out now. Right, right, right, exactly. It gets, it's... A hundred thousand was what? An incalculable loss
Starting point is 00:32:59 and a million was like, oh, we hit a million? Actually, I would say it's, yeah, I would say it's, it's also very similar, that it doesn't matter how many people die. It's about personal freedoms. Well, and you get, it's like this sort of disengagement
Starting point is 00:33:14 that happens, I think, when that, like you're saying, like when that number gets higher, where it's like, well, that's kind of an unfathomable number to me, a number of people. And so I'm just going to disengage from it and just accept like, oh yeah, this number of people die every year from this, this number of people die every year from this, this die every year from this.
Starting point is 00:33:35 And so that's just how it is. It becomes this thing of like, I don't know. It seems like there's, as the number gets higher of something like that, less is felt like can be done. Yeah. The gun-related deaths have been high for years. We've got 45,000 gun deaths a year in the US. Half of those are suicide.
Starting point is 00:34:00 The majority, of course, are not in mass shootings. But when we see that number go up, like this chart I have here in the doc where 2014 we had 273 and 336, 383, and now it's above 600 every year. That's based on the gun violence archives metrics of like four people have to be shot, like killed injured not including the shooter other people have different yeah they're different defining what a mass shooting is but like no matter what you use the numbers going up and right there's no like there's no like like sneaky math you can do really to make it look like it's actually getting better right and so that's why you know the reason of course it keeps coming back to guns is like that's all that is necessarily the common variable like when you have 72 year old men and six year old
Starting point is 00:34:50 kids shooting teachers like it absolutely is the common variable in terms of uh the weapon that's easy to access and you know it can kill a lot of people at once and all of that and it's invented for that and it's invented for that i'm not this is like look i'm not making a case to not have a conversation about gun control i want to be clear about that i feel overwhelmed by the web of gun laws that there are that you pull at and i feel overwhelmed by all the different hurdles and like yeah the gop i gotta say a lot of democrats don't want anything to change either you know they like but it's definitely the gop primarily that blocks this shit but like people there are more more gun violence and attacks are happening because people are under extreme duress or like you there's so many reasons that you can pack pull apart and
Starting point is 00:35:46 pick at and it's like it comes back down we talked about the housing at the beginning like if you take care of people's basic fucking needs and you know and like people have an even foot like we don't know all the the details of this but we know that the of either of these these things these incidents but like the monterey park shooter is clearly someone who has a lot of signs of distress and comparing himself to other people and anger and resentment that has been built up there are lots of things that we can that happen that we allow as a society that is contributing to violence no i mean there's like there are many many factors go into this and uh you know i can say that like in times of desperation i don't feel the need to go out and shoot people and i'm grateful for that but you
Starting point is 00:36:40 know like like you're saying like if people feel very pressed and we don't, as a society, make it very easy for people to not feel that way. And when, again, like, it's this thing where it's like, well, it's not about the guns, it's about this, this, this, this. Well, then do something about that, that, and that, and that. But nobody is willing to do that. Yeah. There's no action being taken because it's like, it's a public health and safety issue.
Starting point is 00:37:10 Many people feel like they can't even go to the fucking mall because who knows, like, you know, like, who knows what will happen? And that's not what people used to feel like. This isn't like a regular occurrence that happens at like, pick a location now.
Starting point is 00:37:24 Like, it started out like schools and like, you just have this like a regular occurrence that happens at like pick a location now like it started out like schools and like you just have this like well actually i mean yes it's not started out but like but i've been thinking about this this week and it's like i remember when was the first time i started being afraid of someone doing a mass shooting and it would be end of college, early 20s when incel type men start going around shooting up women, groups of women or people because they can't get a fucking date. But yeah, that was a big change in my how I viewed myself moving through the world. Well, yeah, I would value, you know, I would value the government addressing guns and mental health. And then there's the conversation, you know, we were off. It was the holidays when Andrew Tate, Greta Thunberg stuff was going on.
Starting point is 00:38:17 But there's a conversation about like male role models and what's happening to men and male isolation. And there's a whole lot going in there. That's like not getting addressed. And the answer is not like, well, they all the women have to date them. Like that's not compliment men more. That's it. And like,
Starting point is 00:38:33 it's true. Like men are, I'm not saying this sympathetically, but like there's a lot of, of that. There's a lot of toxic radicalizing and all sorts of shit going on. Well, there's a lot of uh of that there's a lot of um uh toxic radicalizing and all sorts of shit going on well there's a lot of well yeah i mean there's a lot of um you know uh it'd be nice if everybody could compliment each other more but like i don't know if women compliment men usually they're like
Starting point is 00:38:58 oh she likes me and wants to date me and then it turns into a whole other thing talking about that before we started it's like yeah there's a lot of problems that we have, obviously, in our society. And we make it very difficult for people. And there's atomization and isolation and all these sort of things going on, like the internet. All the things that make people feel more isolated and desperate. And men don't deal with things healthily. No, we don't teach men how't deal with things healthily we don't teach men how to deal with things healthily we don't teach men how to communicate or express or give them a safe space to like yeah yeah talk about their shit it's just a it's just like it feels overwhelming and then
Starting point is 00:39:41 when it happens more and more and more and then it's just like again it's that like i guess we're just going to share that onion article every fucking time this happens and then that'll be that uh and we'll just the number will keep climbing and uh we won't do anything to make people's lives better and uh we'll keep keep having like this, like, it's this weird, like, again, with the COVID stuff, it's this American need. It's like not everybody, but there's like a percentage of people who are like, no, we're not going to do anything about it because I want to prove my right to say no. And like, it's like, well, yeah, you have the right to say no but you're only saying you're not saying it because you don't actually want to do anything you're saying it because you want to prove that you can yeah they're extending the like cold
Starting point is 00:40:32 dead hands argument to their like just winning the argument you know they're like right they're like you'll pry this this debate out of my cold dead hands exactly and it's like it's not like it's not I'm not the first person to bring this up but like it's the kind of thing where it's like like with like lead paint and like asbestos and even like seat belts and stuff if any of those things were brought up now as
Starting point is 00:40:56 issues half the country would be like no i have the right to fucking die yeah you do but you don't have to you can we can all agree to like do something and make people's lives better you don't have to prove that you can say no because we all know that you can and it's impossible to argue when someone is just a brick wall or not even engaging in a conversation because i think that once you start to engage the conversation then you have to address the reality of situation like like reality of what we're talking about, which is people's lives. You know, they want to stay stuck on my personal freedoms argument. I do think that it's a mistake to only look at these incidents and feel rage about guns,
Starting point is 00:41:43 which, yes, you can. That is a part of it it is also a symptom of so many other cracks that i there's no easy answer that's the other thing that gets frustrating is when it's it's like it's only this thing it's only this thing it's a lot of things it's a lot of things and you take away the guns and those things are still going to exist those conditions that are driving people to um be violent and like to that that is a big fucking deal and we're not following that threat enough i don't think as a group uh as a country and it's not to say like oh they'll just go find another weapon i mean like yeah but they also won't kill as many people you know for sure that's but also we want to fix the
Starting point is 00:42:34 problems that are driving people to want to kill each other we want to to get to that right i i do yeah i mean we want to like provide for people's material needs and so that they can live full and happy lives and the gun thing obviously is still is still an issue um it's so easy to get one and again like i just it's frustrating again it's like this sort of like cycle of like the same conversation again okay we'll have the same conversation again i'll have the same conversation again you know what are you gonna ban cars well were cars invented to kill people they can kill people were they invented to kill people the guy got a gun is the only is the thing that like we're like this the purpose of this it's not like homer simpson
Starting point is 00:43:19 getting a gun and using it to open a can and then also like being able to kill somebody with it it's like no that's the purpose the point is you point at something and then that thing is dead that's what it was made to do and it's just frustrating that over and over and over again and uh forever until the end of time and anyone who says like, it's not about this. It's about this is not going to do the thing they say it's actually about. There's no one. There's no one who actually wants to do anything, whether it's like, you know, they there's no inaction on guns. Not great.
Starting point is 00:43:58 But OK, what else you got? Nothing. They have nothing. And they don't actually want to do anything like this. I'm talking about this very briefly. But like Josh Hawley, Ted Cruz has another amendment to which we can talk about. But Hawley is trying to ban Congress from being able to trade stocks. We've done an episode about it. Yep. Great idea. Nonpartisan issue. Let's all come together and ban congress from being able to do that he called it the pelosi act uh because of her uh actions which are obviously like wrong and bad and she shouldn't be doing it and uh fucking so rich from this kind of behavior right um she's not the only one and it's not a democrat specific problem uh i think dan crenshaw might actually have more i i need to look into the actual data but like there's like records of like members of congress in general
Starting point is 00:44:50 the gop has more than that but not that it matters across not that right not that it matters but like crenshaw's way up there too um but he called the pelosi act uh which tells me that he doesn't actually want this to pass. He just wants to like get his little internet points and be seen as like, I'm a man of the people. I'm trying to ban this. Also, I'm going to troll half of Congress and make them not want to vote for it
Starting point is 00:45:16 because it calls out this one person specifically. Call it literally anything else and you'd have support. John Ossoff introduced a similar bill last year he also wants to do this but if you name it the pelosi act you're just telling me that you don't actually want to do anything about this all this is is another opportunity to participate in culture war not stuff to say like the dems this that like to. Or like to give a, associate Pelosi as a Democrat with a certain type of behavior. Right. And it's not a Democrat specific behavior.
Starting point is 00:45:51 It's not. It's a politician specific behavior. Right. And it's very similar to what we just talked about earlier with Mike Pence's documents. Just conveniently leaving out part of it and using this as an opportunity. And they're so good at doing that. Yeah. And like, and, you know, even this issue isn't a GOP specific issue, obviously.
Starting point is 00:46:13 Like, I keep coming back to this, I doubt your commitment to sparkle motion phrase. And that's true of Democrats a lot of the time. It's like, if you really care about this, you do X and Y. And we've talked about that before. This Hawley thing, if you really wanted this to pass, you wouldn't call it that. I doubt your commitment to sparkle motion if you're calling it the Pelosi Act. Ted Cruz has an amendment that he introduces every year or two for term limits in Congress, which, okay, term limits in Congress, fine idea. Let's try to deal with it. Every single time he introduces this amendment, something he thinks is so important
Starting point is 00:46:48 that it needs a constitutional amendment. Every single time, there's always this third section in the amendment that says, also, none of your terms up until this point, no terms before this is enacted counts. I think it's like two or three. I forget the numbers, like two or three for House and two for Senate or something like that. So there's a cap.
Starting point is 00:47:13 You only get two terms and then you're out. But if you've maybe been like a three or four term senator or representative and this is enacted, don't worry. You get two or three left. There's still more. It's always this little bit where it's like, but I can stick around for another couple terms, which again, makes me doubt your commitment to Sparkle Motion.
Starting point is 00:47:34 If you are saying we need term limits, we need an amendment, term limits are very important, but also I want to stick around for a couple more. So I'm going to, all my terms don't count yet. And it's very, I don't know, it's very transparently like this performative like you don't really believe in this i agree with you completely cody thank you how about that how about it let's let's do something fun oh okay let's all go to the lobby and get ourselves a snack. Specifically, M&M's the snack.
Starting point is 00:48:09 The snack, we rehearsed that. Uh-huh. Yeah, we just talk about M&M's every week now. That's what we do now. Because that's what we do. So, M&M's released a statement this week that they were indefinitely pausing the Spokes candies due to the recent controversy that Tucker talked about, where the green M&M wasn't sexy anymore and he thought the purple M&M was plus size, even though it was just the peanut M&M. The peanut M&M. That was purple.
Starting point is 00:48:36 So absurd. That's the part that makes me the most mad and I know it shouldn't. It's a peanut M&M. It's a peanut M&M. That's what they look like. Sorry. Go ahead. Don't be sorry uh that's the show uh m&m's uh is so we're gonna replace the spokes candies with maya rudolph but this is very tongue-in-cheek because they've got a super bowl ad that they've already shot
Starting point is 00:48:59 with maya rudolph coming up in the in the second week of February. So they're like, brands are now just playing around with what they know is going to be right wing culture war stuff. Yeah, they know it's absurd and like it doesn't matter. And these clowns are clowns. And so they're going to play into it and have a little fun and hopefully i sure hope sell more fucking candy um tucker may very well just be in on it they're like oh they're gonna paint the yellow one purple and then i'll do a thing and so they can announce maya rudolph right like it's like planning this the whole time it was so obvious like their statement is so very clearly tongue-in-cheek and then uh somebody pointed out like that the super bowl was coming up was like oh well obviously then like and like what the what's the company that
Starting point is 00:49:50 was like we're giving them pants oh so anw posted a tweet that like looks exactly like the m&m's announcement it's a total joke they say they're putting pants on their cartoon bear mascot rudy the great root bear um and then there's a whole fox business They say they're putting pants on their cartoon bear mascot, Rudy the Great Root Bear. And then there's a whole Fox business segment of them taking it seriously. And they're saying, well, now A&W is putting pants on the bear that they've never heard of in their life. Rudy the Great Root Bear. I can play this clip if we want of them taking it all seriously. Might as well.
Starting point is 00:50:22 Yeah, why not? Yeah, why not? Finally, there is this. First, it was M&M's. Now it's Root Beer. I bet it is. Rudy, the great Root Bear. He serves as the mascot of A&W restaurants.
Starting point is 00:50:35 He's now going to be wearing pants. Apparently, according to the company, Rudy's lack of pants was quite polarizing, they say. He's been on the job since 1963. The spokesbear, quote, is a six-foot-tall bear wearing an orange sweater. We knew people would notice, even in mascots.
Starting point is 00:50:52 Lack of pants can be polarizing. Oh, my God. First, it was M&Ms. It's ridiculous. Now, a bear has to have... What are you crying? I mean, what is the problem? It's just the woke police cancel culture has gone
Starting point is 00:51:06 ridiculous it's absurd how many people they get it are they in on it yeah yes and no like what's your question cody how many people work on that fucking show like sitting there just like a person be like you know it's like a bit right like it's clearly like just one person they don't even because they don't even and obviously like it's like a ratings thing and they want to get their little clicks and like oh yeah everyone ah the eminem the root beer bear but like there's not even a sense of that sort of tongue-in-cheek knowledge right like they don't recognize that it's the same format as the M&M one, that it came a day later, that it's like very clearly a joke. It's just absurd. And some people know and some people don't.
Starting point is 00:51:54 And it's all it's all just a joke now. And it's maddening in a way because it's like, why? Why waste time i know like it's like because like some of the culture war stuff people do care about and some it's just like well this is the thing now we gotta we gotta post our gas stoves shit and it's like some okay it's something to say and like stop it stop it keeping the embers burning for the next big log whatever it is that they're fucking do it and they'd rather do that than talk about anything serious or that's you know actually consequential yeah consequential consequential uh speaking of ted cruz the m&ms posted their little message
Starting point is 00:52:42 uh and in it you can see the overweight purple m&M next to the yellow and blue M&M that look the exact fucking same. And he quote tweeted this message from M&Ms about how they're like, well, we heard you. You know, it's very polarizing. So we're going to we're getting rid of them. And he quote tweeted this with a sign of the apocalypse. Ted, this is you. This is you and your people doing this you were complaining
Starting point is 00:53:09 you're the ones who wanted this to happen like do you know like right like do you forget like what you're arguing or like whose side you're on or like what you're pretending he thought the m&ms were like not woke enough and so getting rid of them and going with maya rudolph is the woke thing to do but no tucker was mad at the m&ms for being woke right it's like how like are you not you're not keeping up on it you need like a fucking dossier at like to like remind you like here's the woke thing you're mad about and here's like the fake thing it's like what do you mean the apocalypse it's you you complete you're the one it. Also, what an extreme ratcheting up. Like, apocalypse. Oh, that's just a thing.
Starting point is 00:53:50 I went to search for that tweet and just apocalypse from Ted Cruz. And he does this every, like, couple of months. For, like, Glenn Leavitt had, like, little whiskey pods instead of drinking whiskey, which is, like, stupid. But, like, maybe it's not a sign of the apocalypse uh so he just likes doing that it's certainly not one of the signs i've been taught to look out for but maybe he's on to something yeah no i was taught like growing up in sunday school they do a thwart in synagogue you know if you were yeah they teach you that when the green eminem was like
Starting point is 00:54:23 really sexy once if it ever if the green eminem ever like really sexy once, if the green M&M ever stops being hot, you'll know like shit's going down. Oh, really? So this is as it was written by him? Yeah, this is in Deuteronomy, all about the green M&M or if they put pants on the cartoon bear. I guess I really
Starting point is 00:54:40 should have read the Bible. I should have paid more attention. You know, this is what you learn when you really pay attention to the classics yeah only been to study school once yeah i need to god gosh dang you did some church shows yeah i did they uh roped me into auditioning i've never been to church a couple times i went to sit in the back while all my theater friends quote-unquote theater friends go and get communion and i would be like you can't see but i made a weird face i uh i had never been to church before um and only been a couple times for like weddings and stuff but one time i was like i feel like it's
Starting point is 00:55:16 like 10 or 12 and i made the apparent mistake of spending the night at a friend's house on a saturday night and i woke up the next morning and they're like all right time for sunday school and they did not they did not let me know that we were gonna do that until that morning i was like okay parents have picked you up they did we just went and so like i'm just like there i'm like this is this is brand new and weird i don't know any of these songs you're like who it's a very weird introduction to uh to the church i was not prepared for it i just wanted to pancake out yeah exactly play video games like an american exactly thank you a real red-blooded american boy i won't age myself by
Starting point is 00:55:59 saying which no game system probably just google it i bet it's online don't uh your age your age what is your age let's google it don't google me i don't like being i don't i know like it's counterintuitive because like i've got a i've got a show i do sketches we do all these things i don't like being perceived right actually i don't care if you see him just let your eyes glaze over and let him blend into the look away for your eyes yeah don't don't actually i don't care if you see him just let your eyes glaze over yeah just like look away for your eyes yeah don't don't care i don't care for it and that does it for us this week oh great i can stop being perceived for a while excellent yeah you get to go recede into the wall i get to go pee again excellent so we both win gets to figure out his wild weekend plans.
Starting point is 00:56:45 No more information about that. 36 hour bender, just like everyone. That's right. Okay, that's it. We did it. We made it through. And so did you. And hey, gosh, darn it.
Starting point is 00:56:58 I just got to say. Heck. It's been eating at me this whole time. Oh. We love you very much. Much.
