Starting point is 00:00:00 hello and welcome back to even more news the first and only news podcast my name is katie stole wait a second that sounds made up hold on first and only podcast oh podcast i've heard of those podcast yeah yeah yeah i'm cody johnston and jonathan is also here yes that's it that's all of us yeah guest yeah say hi again hello again i'm here i'm excited to be here all right holidays okay december 7th is national letter writing day okay all right letters or like letters that make up letters no i believe letter writing i i don't believe it it's the name of the holiday is letter writing so that to me suggests it's about writing letters that makes sense have you i i cannot remember the last time i sent a letter of any kind other than an unspelled checked email
Starting point is 00:01:12 yeah this is specific to uh physical letters i assume does anybody do that anymore yeah some people do i go through phases where i'm like it'd be nice to wouldn't it be nice to get a letter it'd be nice to send a letter do you ever send one long long time been a long long time thank you notes so maybe you don't really go through those phases anymore never even big they're no longer phases you're right thank you notes if anything is there is an era this is an interesting question jonathan i think i know the answer for you, partly because you suggested thank you notes. People either grow up in households that send thank you notes or don't. And mine was a don't. Really?
Starting point is 00:01:56 So if you got married, you wouldn't send thank you cards to people who came? Oh, no, for that'm like, well, that's a lot of effort for something I'm going to immediately throw away. Yeah, no, I don't do that. That's not a card you keep. throw away yeah no i don't do that card you keep but for formal occasions and like after anyone who sent like a gift for the baby or fortunately i have not had any major life events worth sending uh thank you i thought you recently moved to the mountains i recently moved to the mountains and that is not something that i thank other people for other than my realtor. I was wondering why I didn't give him. I didn't take my realtor.
Starting point is 00:02:50 I mean, I didn't send him a thank you card. I cooked him dinner and his wife. Oh, that's nice. Well, my parents, I used the same realtor that my parents used and they've befriended him. And traditionally they were there. So technically I thanked, thanked well all of them because my parents helped you know were a huge support anyway this isn't uh me talk about that who have you not time listeners folks at home there's probably someone in your life who you uh you
Starting point is 00:03:20 feel maybe you're disconnected from maybe it's been a while maybe you only like uh you this give them a like on facebook send them a letter write them a handwritten letter and send it to them they would really appreciate it would probably reconnect you in ways that they surprise both of you and they might throw it in the trash they might not trash they might not they probably won't if it's like a handwritten like if it's a handwritten letter i feel like they wouldn't but if it's like a thank you note for i guess it depends on how much time you spend on that letter. They might call the FBI. They might call the FBI.
Starting point is 00:03:49 They're like, what's this? That's true. Well, don't put like baking powder in there. Okay, we're going to move on to the next holiday. Don't put powders in your letters that you're sending to your friends, folks. That's not the point of the day. Because this one's very weird. This next one that I wanted to save time for.
Starting point is 00:04:06 December 8th, take it in the ear day. The fuck does that mean? What the fuck does that mean? Take it in the ear? Take what in the ear? I don't know. And I spent a lot of time looking. Every single national day calendar includes take it in the ear day on their website.
Starting point is 00:04:28 No one knows what it means. They don't know where it came from. The earliest earliest reference I found to it on the Internet is from December 2008 on a calendar on teachers dot net, which also does not say what it is. Some people think it comes from a phrase from the movie liar liar other people think it's should just say take it in the rear day and they dropped it off but i that doesn't seem to why would every website every calendar website have made the same mistake doesn't make sense i mean or it's a conspiracy or it's a conspiracy mean, or it's a conspiracy. Or it's a conspiracy. You mean and it's a conspiracy.
Starting point is 00:05:08 Because it is, definitely. And. This is weird. It has no like, here's what we mean by this. It's just we know that this is the day that it's called. Yeah, all the calendars are like, this is taken in the year day. We don't know what it means or where it came from, but it's on all the other calendars. So we're putting it on ours there no no national day calendar is taking
Starting point is 00:05:29 the agency to like you know put draw a line in the sand and say this is not a holiday yeah or like this is why it is a holiday and this is what it means and we're deciding what this phrase means a completely different i'm sure you've you're familiar with this one i don't know a completely different holiday calendar website and by the way there are so many there are lots of different ones listen give me your ear as today is taken in the ear day a december 8th holiday this is a bizarre day of unknown origin our research found absolutely no documentation about the origin of this day and have not uncovered any information around the meaning or purpose of this day i'm sorry jonathan i know that's just what you've said but what the what is happening here i don't know there's uh you know i i spent i'm gonna say 20 minutes on
Starting point is 00:06:17 this and then said that's not what they want me doing i like they'd be upset it is though this last sentence is fun well in any event however and whatever you want to take to your ear we hope you thoroughly enjoy taking me your day however and whatever you want to take to your ear i would suggest q-tips but maybe not even that uh yeah you don't need to use q-tips is there any other product other than the q-tip where it says on the box don't use this for the only thing that you use it for everybody uses it for i that's a good question i'm trying to think of like there's anything else like q-tip originally invented for of absolutely digging in the ear but because you can injure yourself doing that they put on the box don't do it even though
Starting point is 00:07:02 i kind of thought that it was one of those things that yeah it was okay unless cody's got some late breaking take it in the air news i'm really really trying so i'm gonna throw this to our listeners if you have any information about the creation whereabouts of take it in the year day or if you have any insight into just the phrase take it in the ear because i don't see any indication that that's a phrase that anybody knows what that means what like regardless of the day celebrating whatever the phrase means i i just don't know what's going on. Yeah, we'd love to get to the bottom of this. Okay, well, we're going to take a quick break for ads.
Starting point is 00:07:53 Look at me throwing to ads. We're going to let you take these ads in the ear. Take it in the ear. Take these ads in the ear. Fuck yeah, we got there. Now I know what the point of this holiday was. For now. I don't think so. Please let us know if you. Now I know what the point of this holiday was. For now. I don't think so.
Starting point is 00:08:07 Please let us know if you have any information. Okay, bye. Be right back. Hey, pull over your car and listen. There's no time. Crouch down in your back seat and listen. For the longest, don't actually do that. Drive safely, please.
Starting point is 00:08:19 For the longest time, my digestion just wasn't what it used to be. As a kid, I could eat pounds of salt. These days, not so much. Merely one pound of salt a day. But if you're a long time listener, you might also know I've been drinking AG1 for about many several years. Please don't start the car yet, okay?
Starting point is 00:08:39 Act natural, just look around, just like, look around, oh, you check any watch, oh, I just needed to stop the car to check your watch, all right? When I started drinking AG1, it made my grumpy belly nice again. It welcomes the salt. That's because, according to AG1,
Starting point is 00:08:53 AG1 is a foundational nutrition supplement that supports your body's universal needs like gut optimization, stress management, and immune support. Since 2010, AG1 has led the future of foundational nutrition, continuously refining their formula to create a smarter, better way

Starting point is 00:09:45 Drive safely. Relaxing dumps are great, but dealing with the aftermath, not so much. Wiping only spreads poop around and no one has trained animals to clean our butts. Yet.

Starting point is 00:11:12 It's a car wash, but for your butt. And we are right back. We, here we are. We came right, we came right back. So I have a question so this holiday take it in the ear day uh it first appeared on teachers.net you say and that's the last thing you can find is it like a a phrase meaning like knowledge like take it in the ear like we're like you're learning we know because they also have national pastryry Day and National Noodle Ring Day.
Starting point is 00:11:45 Well, but now I still don't know what to think. All right, fine. Well, we're going to move on from that and have some fun with our first story. Ooh, baby. What's it about? Our little boy, Georgie Santus. Oh, Georgie. Little Georgie.
Starting point is 00:12:02 I don't know if you were talking about Georgeorge about dono donnie trumbo no no no no anthony devolder long island representative george santos got expelled from congress last week on account of the few dozen federal fraud charges yeah so this is interesting um i guess i'm curious what folks takes are on this because george santos is a hilarious man really quite funny just so many moments but what that would we ever find out if he's stealing that baby whose baby that was he's like ah i got this baby now uh what a what a character is it this is like a pretty rare occurrence he's not i don't know i guess i'm just asking like are we okay with congress expelling people from congress for like
Starting point is 00:12:52 being charged with things or when like people voted for him and now they're like well you got these charges so we're gonna expel you well let's look at some of the alleged justice for santos that you know got him kicked out yeah yeah i guess if there was any doubt that he was just scamming for a decade they might have but this built up over a while because we know we knew most of this stuff almost a year ago. Oh, he's done these things. Let's be clear. So the list of things that this is what he got expelled for because he's been charged with charging campaign contributors credit cards without their consent. He inflated his campaign's fundraising numbers to qualify for financial support from the Republican Party.
Starting point is 00:13:46 He laundered campaign funds to pay for his personal expenses. He lied on federal disclosure forms. It's funny, most of the stuff he got expelled for is scamming Republicans out of money. There's other lies that he told and stuff, like the fake pet nonprofit scam. I don't believe he's been charged with that. No, that's just stuff that people like journalists have like dug into and like oh here's this other lie he told or here's
Starting point is 00:14:11 this other fraud thing that somebody should yeah i mean let's not forget lying he said his mother died in 9-11 she didn't she didn't she just fucking didn't so yeah i mean that's an interesting question i think that this man is his crimes are well documented and they do relate to you know specifically how he got into office and so that totally i'm just i'm just pausing the question putting it out there but he's these are all uh pretty egregious alleged crimes are you pulling for george santos because you want i don't know what i'm doing i don't know what i'm doing right now i don't know what you're doing either it makes sense because there are a bunch of other members of congress who should be expelled for various other reasons who are not that is true but i don't want him to
Starting point is 00:15:02 stay sure and like you know if he if he you you know let's all right these alleged crimes are proven to be true and then you know and the law is like ah you did them you gotta you pay for the crimes but when it's all these sort of accusations like well everybody like again not everybody in congress but like i don't know i again i don't know what i'm doing here how often do we expel people from congress is a good question i guess uh incredibly it's so rare looking up while you're looking it up i do want to talk about his new turn as a cameo star oh yeah he is now charging 400 for a personal video and he has delivered hundreds of videos apparently he's made six figures just this week uh this is according to the ceo of cameo and you know that's not a
Starting point is 00:15:54 long-term viable career path for him but he is definitely taking advantage but i want to read this from this article. Santos said he'd give some of the money to unspecified good causes and that the cash was only part of the appeal. First off, what? Santos said that he would give his money to unspecified good causes. Yeah, fucking right. That pet charity bullshit. OK, anyway. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:16:23 Friends of Pets United. He's giving all the money. But then there's, this is the quote from, from him. Obviously there's a monetary benefit. I'm not here doing it for charity. Okay.
Starting point is 00:16:33 But the other aspect is to remind these assholes who think they're holier than thou, that they will be forgotten in history and I will live forever. Period. And I'm like, George, orge honey he's such no no no this is a get what you can this is gonna last a month i mean a month a month a month of six figures a week i think he'll be doing fine unless he goes to jail for crimes. I mean, he'd be OK to pay off all of his, you know, defense fees. He started out last week on Cameo at seventy five dollars and quickly started moving it up because it was very popular.
Starting point is 00:17:16 And now he's charging four hundred dollars a piece. I can play a clip of one of his cameos. That price will drop soon yes it'll drop and and you know in a month he will not be but then also again like because he knows he gets it um aside from like like don't do crimes which he doesn't seem to get but like he's such a uh personality like attention guy like of all the people who are like i could trump's president anyone can do that stuff he's like one of the few that like gets that it doesn't matter and you can just you can just swoop in there and just like do whatever uh he knows also yeah it's 400 now and it'll go down to 50 but once he's back in the news for like a trial or like another crime, that price is going right back up.
Starting point is 00:18:10 He's going to be riding high for a long time is all I want to say. So here's what you get for that money. Hi, Katie. Thank you for the love. Thank you for the kindness. You know, Botox keeps you young. Fillers keeps you plump. Look, don't let the haters get to you. Haters are going to hate. And if you have haters, that means you're doing something right, girl. So just keep going. You
Starting point is 00:18:36 know, you're a Harvard Law School girl. Like, are you kidding? You have haters? Let them hate. Just do you, girl. Screw the haters. Enjoy life. Live life. And make sure that all these haters in your life, they can go all you know where. I want to wish you a Merry Christmas, Happy Hanukkah, Happy New Year, and let 2024 be filled with everything that 2023 was lacking in. Bye. Okay. Honestly, thank you for including one with my name, but I just came around. I think he seems cool.
Starting point is 00:19:15 And yeah, that wasn't intentional, by the way. I hope you don't think that I just spent $400 and told them you went to Harvard Law. For a second, I was like. I know. I forgot about that, that he's addressing Katie in there. And then I'm like... I know, I forgot about that, that he's addressing Katie in there, and then I'm like, oh shit, is Katie going to think that I had a surprise cameo? I did think that, just for a second.
Starting point is 00:19:33 But once he said Harvard Law, I was like staunchly in. Once that price went up, I was like, I'm not getting one of these. I know every podcast in the country is probably paying for a Santos cameo right now, but no, not this one. He doesn't need our money.
Starting point is 00:19:50 No, he doesn't. He doesn't need anybody's money, but he'll take it. You know what? Maybe we should start cameos. Would you guys subscribe to my cameo if I did cameos? Hit me up in the comments. I don't think you subscribe to a cameo. You don't subscribe to a cameo.
Starting point is 00:20:04 Would you guys buy cameos? Katie, are you going to did cameos hit me up in the comments would you guys buy cameos katie are you gonna do cameos i mean maybe no maybe though if people were like yeah the look these men are giving me right now i want you all to know i'm just sitting here listening. It is just the patriarchy trying to stop me, trying to judge me for taking ownership of my life. I work for you. You're not on my terms. People are going to pay you to say what they want. On my terms. On your terms.
Starting point is 00:20:42 You're right. You're right. It's on your terms. So, dear listeners if you want cameos let me know in the comments go for it do we have a comment section okay let's move on to another topic yeah hop on to some more news uh videos and uh leave comments about how katie should do cameo on unrelated We're making jokes and I'm not serious. But also, I could be serious at some point in time in my life.
Starting point is 00:21:10 I think you are serious. I actually think it would be quite fun. It would be fun. Real quick, before we move on, I want to follow up on the this is pretty rare, getting expelled from Congress. Oh, yes, thank you. Good memory. George Santos is only the sixth
Starting point is 00:21:25 house member to ever be kicked out of congress the first since 2002 and the first who has not yet been convicted of a crime or wasn't a part of the confederacy okay well that's 1980 uh they expelled michael myers good choice he was causing a lot of problems there the murder reference for everybody it was a murder reference he was just going yeah baby no no no he's killing people i wasn't sure if it was which one you were going for okay well then look i just really hard to defend george santos i guess technically he should have been convicted before getting expelled. It's just one of those things where it's like, well, that's, you know, what does that open things up to? But also look at the clown man.
Starting point is 00:22:14 I don't know. Also, on principle, I don't think he's good at his job or should be in that job. Oh, sure. I mean, I imagine he hasn't really done a whole lot for his constituents okay moving on to a way less fun topic congress news again still though what's congress up to well the house passed a resolution this week condemning anti-semitism that's good what else do they do but what it does is it declares anti-zionism is anti-semitism that's good what else do they do but what it does is it declares anti-zionism is anti-semitism that doesn't seem accurate good or accurate or that it will do the thing that they want it to do which is reduce anti-semitism because it is pretty anti-Semitic. Okay, let's talk about it.
Starting point is 00:23:07 Jonathan, do you want to set this up for us? Yeah, I mean, this is a symbolic measure passed by the House. There's a bunch of different things in it that says we condemn anti-Semitism, but it also declares that anti-Zionism is anti-Semitism. The measure passed 3-11 to 14. 92 Democrats voted present. This is kind of, if they didn't like the bill, they were instructed to vote present. A number of Jewish Democrats, like Jerry Nadler, talked about how anti-Zionism is not necessarily anti-Semitism, that there are
Starting point is 00:23:41 some anti-Zionists that are making anti-semitic statements but there are is a long history of anti-zionist groups including jewish anti-zionist groups that are not anti-semitic the the bill also you know it just conflated pro-palestinian expressions like palestine will be free with anti-semitism um so this is kind of more of the same stuff that we've been seeing for the last couple months it's more of the same but it's um i don't know it's it i mean it's fucked up to be honest um because it's all the stuff we've talked about before but this is like this is very explicit um and it hasn't been this explicit in the past like there have been similar like attempts to sort of, with language, kind of conflate the two or
Starting point is 00:24:30 imply that they're the same. But this very explicitly says, no, this is this, which seems alarming. And again, I don't know if you really want to conflate these people with this state. Don't you think that will make problems worse? I don't know if you're, are you, do you really want to conflate these people with this state? Right. Don't you think that will make problems worse? Don't you think that will cause a rise in anti-Semitism if you are saying that? I do think that because now what you're doing is conflating Jewish people with the state of Israel. So now Jewish people are responsible for the state of Israel and their actions.
Starting point is 00:25:06 It also is hard to wrap your mind around. I mean, there is a very, very, very sizable Jewish population, especially in the United States, but everywhere, who are very staunchly opposed to what's happening. And so there's something about this
Starting point is 00:25:22 that is conflating people that want nothing to do with what's happening at all, do not support it in any way, are horrified by it. They're now being looped into it somehow. And we will see a rise in anti-Semitism because of it. It's so obvious. Yeah, it's super postury from these people we see a lot when let's say trump is criticizing china and you look at the language he uses in the way he's saying it and you're like oh he's being like racist yeah right against china or like when he calls COVID the China virus. It's easy to point out why that's racist. But the
Starting point is 00:26:07 pro-Palestinian protesters, the Jewish groups protesting for a ceasefire have been very, very clear about what specific elements from the Israeli government that they're criticizing, that they're protesting. But to say no, you're actually criticizing Jews when you do that is to conflate Jewishness with the actions of the Israeli government, which is wild and, yes, anti-Semitic and dangerous. It would be, and I don't think, I think this would be easy to understand if it was any other place in the world, right? If the government of Norway did something we didn't like and you said, well, you're being anti-white or whatever.
Starting point is 00:26:52 Like if Elon Musk was like, that's an anti-white sentiment. You'd say like, what are you talking about? It's weird. Yeah, exactly. It's very weird. And we only do it with this thing. And I don't know. It's just like easy to see.
Starting point is 00:27:05 thing and i don't know it's just like easy to see like you people criticized the government uh south africa without saying they did like oh south africa shouldn't exist anymore right because like they got rid of apartheid south africa exists today like right we've seen how it works so just doing it like this is it's still just very post 9-11 to me also just like the like states existing or not existing doesn't necessarily mean people not existing like like it's this other high concept that isn't literally the people wait what do you mean like with like south africa if south africa didn't exist anymore and it was called something else and the people right like that doesn't mean that, you know. And by that same logic, saying like the Israeli government who says like
Starting point is 00:27:52 we must not allow there to be a Palestinian state suggests that they don't want those people there anymore. Right. If that's the logic you're going to apply to everything, saying that you just want there to be Israel and no independent Palestine, well, what does that suggest that you want? and just sort of like wait so you can't say this but you're saying this um and oftentimes it's like very explicitly saying like no we just don't want these people here to exist anymore like every day i feel like there's a new like quote where it's like wait they fucking said that out loud yeah it's messed up it is horrific okay well we going to take another very quick break for advertisements.
Starting point is 00:28:49 Then we're going to come back. We're going to talk about even more news. So that's all fun and good. Yeah. You know, some things just don't mix. Like gerbils and tractors. Or tractors and fire. Or fire and bridges.
Starting point is 00:29:05 Similar to these things I just listed, our bodies just don't mix well with CBD oil. Roughly only five to 10% of CBD oil is actually absorbed, and that makes Cody sad. To make Cody happy, let's talk about Next Evo Naturals and their CBD gummies. Unlike oil, their products work faster and absorb better than most CBD oils.
Starting point is 00:29:29 About four times better to be exact. I like being exact. That's why they call me Accurate Cody. Hey now, sometimes I have a hard Cody day and like to relax with some hemp products. Next Evo has gummies designed to help with relaxation and sleep time. And right now you can try their extra strength
Starting point is 00:29:49 daily wellness CBD gummies that are twice as strong as their regular strength. Two times the other one. Don't waste your time with oil-based CBD that might not work. Upgrade to better natural solutions from NextEvo. Go to NextEvo.com and use promo code MORENEWS to get 25% off.
Starting point is 00:30:10 That's 25% off at N-E-X-T-E-V-O.com. Promo code MORENEWS. Take it from Accurate Cody, God of Facts. And we are back. And we are back. As promised. as promised for even more news well cody and i are back uh jonathan had to step away you had to go take care of something everything's fine but it's just the two of us but he's gone so we're gonna get fucking wild dad's gone party oh yeah which is to say we're gonna talk about more news we're gonna talk about some more news we're gonna talk about sag we're gonna talk about
Starting point is 00:30:57 sag now because that's next in the document yeah well and you want you had a lot to say about it. So, yeah. So SAG has ratified its deal with the AMPT with 78% of voting membership approving it. Although only 38% of members voted. So, you know, there's that. This is higher than percentages. 38%? That's pretty low. Yeah, which is a higher percentage than people voted in 2017 and 2020. But it was a much, much, much higher percentage of the strike authorization vote, which is a little like, OK, guys.
Starting point is 00:31:35 So I tweeted about this, but I'm going to say it here. I voted no. And that was not an easy decision per se, but I felt like I had to. I understand the arguments for voting. Yes, I definitely do. This has been fucking grueling. People have been out of work for so long and the ramifications industry wide are huge. And the ramifications industry wide are huge.
Starting point is 00:32:13 However, I'm really concerned about the future of this industry and the effects that AI will have on it. And long term, I think that we're going to be seeing massive, massive loss of, you know, careers, not just employment. People are just not going to be able to be in this industry anymore and i'm not talking just about actors i'm talking about you know set coordinators costumers production designers yeah you were mentioning that the other day and i think that's important to mention like especially with like background actor stuff and like all the ai the ai the like the ai actor stuff yes it is going to get rid of uh a lot of like actors work um and it is going to make it harder for actors to get into the guild in the first place because that's how a lot of people get in the guild yes but it is going to affect other aspects of filmmaking or like you know uh this any any medium like this um where you have people who are like
Starting point is 00:33:07 well those actors need to wear something uh they need to you know they have makeup they're like all these things to make real people look real um and you're just getting rid of all of that yeah there are people whose entire careers are you, coordinating background actors or those giant battle scenes or crowd scenes and clothing them and organizing them and directing them. There's just so much we think about. We could take it even further. We can talk about the caterers, the people that provide support. But here's the sticking points in the contract
Starting point is 00:33:47 uh the deal secured minimal protections against performances being generated through ai specifically if a company if a production wants to scan you and you don't want that there's zero protections zero you. You will be replaced. Right. That's the thing. A lot of these protections are like, well, and like this deal is like, well, yeah, you're not doing anything about AI other than saying that, like, you can say no and then you won't have the job. You know, like you have to sign you sign away the next 10, 20 years, whatever of your image
Starting point is 00:34:21 if you want the job. And that's like going to be a requirement. And we'll see how that all shakes out you know i don't think that immediately but it's already happening i mean people are already being scanned unfortunately this was our opportunity now people say you can't go back to the drawing board or we'll start at the beginning. That's absolute bullshit. They strung the writers along for a very long time, gave their last best final offer. It was not good. And then they gave another one.
Starting point is 00:34:56 And, you know, that got ratified. And then they didn't even come to the table for like six weeks with the actors. They didn't start negotiating. Then they gave their last best and final offer. I believe that there's more left on the table. I believe that we're playing right into their hand here and that if we had gone back to the table, there's no guarantee and it is risky and it is terrifying. side of it but it's almost like we did all of this for nothing and not for nothing but it's oh the one last thing i was going to say is the last chunk of the year is always dead this town is dead between thanksgiving and the new year honestly even into january because there's festivals and stuff and people are out of town so actually this would have been a perfect time i think that they would have wrapped it up by the end of the year i think they would have come back to the
Starting point is 00:35:50 table quickly and i also want to say that i also knew that it would pass right so for me it was a question of where are my morals what are my fears and i feel very good about the fact that i uh voted no and some people have criticism for it but i don't fucking care i really hope that i'm i'm wrong but i don't think that i am yeah well you're not wrong in that like i mean many ways you voted how you thought you should have voted well i mean but also like this like the the result of this like this deal like nobody's even saying that it's like perfect or we got you got everything right like it's not like oh this is really good it's like well this is the best we're gonna get so like you're right in that it's not a great solution to these problems that are gonna happen
Starting point is 00:36:42 and i do think you're right well actually so i say i actually think you're not wrong but you said it was it would be risky to go back i don't think it would be would have been risky i don't actually think it would have been risky i am acknowledging that everybody is terrified of it yes and but there was a big push from leadership like move was like we'll make them scared and then but like what's scaring to them is that they have movies coming out and they can't send actors out to promote the movies and then the movies fucking tank and they and they have had writers back to work for a while and they need actors to film those things season coming up they need people to be working they
Starting point is 00:37:21 need people to be doing press they need people on the red carpet this was our opportunity we will never ever ever have a situation like this again where we had this much leverage when with like with the ai stuff too like it's the kind of thing like i know i've heard people like well you know there's not much we can do or like you can't put that cat back back in the bag whatever it is you know when you really can't do anything about it is after they've done it for years yeah after after ostensibly being like given permission to do it right like this is the time to actually like put pauses on that and really figure it out as opposed to like you can say no well then they're gonna do it anyway with a different person who says yes exactly so then the ball will get rolling and they'll have done it for many years so when this strike happens again which it will need to because
Starting point is 00:38:07 the industry wants to crush any fucking art that uh doesn't make them billions of dollars and they don't actually like movies for some reason there's gonna be another strike and that that train will have gone for so long already it's gonna be really hard to tamp down on exactly the actual damages that come from i also actually don't know if you can because then you'll have already had years of people doing it and then it changes it's gonna be like you can't you can't like like after years of like ai being used and all these all these aspects of of the industry three like years later be like actually uh we're on strike again because we don't want you to do that anymore they're gonna keep they're
Starting point is 00:38:50 just gonna keep doing it they're just gonna keep doing it and like maybe it wouldn't have gotten you know a perfect deal pushing more and it would have solved the problem but uh it could have possibly mitigated some protection some sort of thing i mean it's it's terrifying to me um also you know there were some other gains so there was also um something that was gained which is a streaming success residual model that at first we were like cool but it's really bad here i'll describe it uh it's just it's going to be difficult for most actors to be able to take advantage of it, because under this agreement, actors will get a residual bonus if a show or movie they're in gets viewed by 20 percent of domestic subscribers in the first 90 days.
Starting point is 00:39:39 But to be honest, that's really that's only going to benefit the really big hits, the things that get all the push, like the Stranger Things. Even that I'm not even positive, but, you know, it's pretty high threshold. And, you know, for shows on Amazon Prime, for example, I don't know how that works. They're also not transparent with these numbers at all. They're also not transparent with these numbers at all. with these numbers at all they're also not transparent with these numbers at all and like like you know what i guess i don't know the details or like if this applies but like if i if i subscribe to amazon prime because i want delivery for or whatever like i do it for the amazon stuff i get amazon prime the streaming app but if i don't watch shows on amazon prime do i count as a
Starting point is 00:40:26 subscriber right like is it you know am i a subscriber to amazon prime but i'm not watching these shows so like you know uh not me like like there are tons of people who's yeah no i totally don't watch tv on on it you know like is that are they amazon prime isn't just for video it's for shopping it's for shopping. It's for all of the things. Like they're trying to make it the same thing and integrate it together, but like they're different industries
Starting point is 00:40:52 and models and markets. We keep being told in all of the membership meetings and different things, it's like, well, the technology isn't there. This is great. You know, you're going to get some bonuses or whatever, some payment if they use your likeness. And it is great. You know, you're going to get some bonuses or whatever, some payment if they use your likeness. And it is there. It's really tough. They kept saying to us, we've had our team
Starting point is 00:41:14 who have reviewed this. They say it's solid. This is great. And then meanwhile, everybody that works in AI outside of the entertainment industry, everybody that, or even people in the entertainment are writing op-eds and posting about how, no, this isn't good. This isn't good at all. This is really bad. Everyone listen. And it was hard.
Starting point is 00:41:32 It's been hard watching actor friends kind of debate this the past few weeks because- And the idea that the technology isn't there, first of all, it will be eventually. But it also is there, but- in terms of what they want it for it'll be not even eventually very soon right but also but also like the technology's not there yet and so on it doesn't matter for many reasons but one of the main reasons it doesn't matter if the technology isn't there because they're gonna do it anyway they don't care about making a good product if they did they would use human beings in their product like they
Starting point is 00:42:10 don't care to make like a really great piece of art that doesn't have like some weird like 15 fingered person in the background they're not gonna give a shit they're just gonna do it and it'll get better incrementally like it'll look better you'll notice fewer fingers as the years go by but like they're not gonna not do it because like it's not it's not quite there yet that's it yeah i don't know that's not a compelling argument to me to not be concerned about it if it's like not there because also they're gonna do it even if it's not there because they don't care we see bad versions of it all the time yeah man you know anyway congratulations like well it's like you know you see like every every few days i feel like there's a new uh discovery of like yeah this website's been doing ai articles for
Starting point is 00:42:57 like months and they made up a fake person to like post these articles and no one noticed until now yeah eventually they noticed and maybe they stopped because somebody noticed but they're gonna make a new name and keep doing it uh it's not like you don't you can't stop profit-driven industries from being lazy and making an inferior product for like you can't you can't expect them to not do that because ah it's not quite there yet yeah they're not gonna care um well that was a little depressing a little bit but also there's parts of the deal that are good in that you get to go back to work done yeah i'm good to go back to work for all those auditions i've been swimming in for years okay movies are back folks okay well let's wrap this
Starting point is 00:43:47 up with something a little light and entertainment adjacent but i don't know much about so cody talk to me about grand theft auto it's whatever uh this is like a nothing story it's just we've been talking about stuff that might be depressing and so we're gonna have a little fun although we did talk about george santos for a while so that's fun that was also fun yeah george santos andreas i'm trying to do like a gta pun with his name i'm so sorry no you don't have to say that um uh so gta 6 has a trailer out and uh the game's not coming out for like 2025 2025 is when it comes out and there's so many uh weird opinions going on about it and i it's just like just it's so fascinating to see like this like the shift of like culture in like a real time or just like
Starting point is 00:44:47 step back and like wait this is how like so many people think about this now one thing i will note is there in the trailer it looks like it's in vice city again the trailer is like you know there's like uh cry criminals everywhere and stuff and then there's like this what there's one one moment in the trailer that is uh just simply of people on the beach and you might notice that many of uh the people in the photo are black and i have seen i don't know if anyone else has seen this i've seen a huge amount of tweets of people just talking about how they want to run over those people on the beach and i would like to preface this by saying i understand the appeal of like the gta games and stuff and like that's like part of why like people play them is like yeah we're gonna like be like fucking weird criminals and go on sprees and like there's it's a very violent game okay that isn't the cause of violence
Starting point is 00:45:43 i don't think i need to say that but like it's a violent game but the ones i'm seeing aren't oh i'm gonna have so much fun killing people in grand theft auto it seems to be very very explicitly about the black women in this trailer and i don't know if anyone else listening has seen that it is upsetting to see so many blue check accounts talk about that horrifying it is horrifying it is like deeply upsetting disturbing really fucked up uh to see yeah and like very explicitly and like you go to their pages and like oh you are a nazi like you scroll down like oh i see but so is that i hear that elon musk isn't happy about this is that what he is is that what he has a problem with the people wanting to run over black people oh on his website uh yeah that he
Starting point is 00:46:32 spent so much money on yeah is that what he's upset about no no no this is weird one of the funnier things he's ever said um and not in the way he wants to be funny in response to the trailer which also like every like x the x ceo linda is like oh look at all the the views on the trailer are so high everything happens on x no no no people are excited about this game and they're watching it on the platform everyone's flocking to x to see the gta trailer no no no no no ma'am but elon's response to the trailer was quote tried but didn't like doing crime gta 5 required shooting police officers in the opening scene just couldn't do it a fascinating tweet from the world's biggest fucking dork and loser and liar but didn't like doing crime
Starting point is 00:47:27 sure you do buddy it's so funny um i'm sure you don't like doing crime it's such a funny thing and there's this response from ian chong his just the biggest suck up in the world who also said i'm glad shooting cops in cyberpunk 2077 is completely optional never finished gta 5 either as the community note indicates on ian's tweet uh he has written up to 255 articles about gta 5 that's why he was a gaming journalist but he didn't finish it apparently he didn't finish it because it was too hard shooting the cops it's just absurd it's this weird like ah this anti-cop sentiment in america they burned down the thing we got all the woke cities i gotta take a stance against this video game the crime is in the title of the game it's been decades of this game existing and suddenly it's like well i i think
Starting point is 00:48:22 actually this is my moral high ground. It's so silly and absurd. And like, dude, I'm sure so many of the games you play, if you even play games at all, there's like the cops of the world that you're in that you have to fight. Like, it's just like it's so absurd. The premise of the game is this part. A huge part of the game is like, oh, no, the cops are after me. Oh, no. More cops are after me. Oh, no. My wanted is like oh no the cops are after me oh no more cops are after me oh no my wanted level is up more cops are after me like it's so telling i think that he's like i never like this because it makes you shoot police officers but he's not like i don't like this
Starting point is 00:48:56 because it like encourages people to like kill random civilians in the game like that's part of the game right and like again all these people on this website i can't wait to run these people over no it's the cop shooting part in the crime game the fake crime game it's so just so silly well i mean you're right it's right there in the title grand theft auto you are a criminal you are signing up to play the character, whatever, the part of a criminal. Who is the enemy of a criminal? The cops. It's just.
Starting point is 00:49:32 It's just so silly. Like, I don't. It's silly, silly, stupid poo poo. It is silly, silly, stupid poo poo. I think you're right, actually. I didn't think I'd have much to say about grand theft auto 6 but i did but here we are um yeah it's just an absurd thing uh it's not important um i only thought it was funny that he took the time to be like i'm actually a very
Starting point is 00:49:56 serious person and i think that we shouldn't be shooting the cops in the video game it makes me upset uh and then ian who's like god what a little slimy little worm uh it's like yes sir i also don't like the cop shooting game that i've written 255 articles about an absurd amount of articles oh that's too many articles if you like or hate the game it doesn't matter it's too many articles about grand theft auto 5. Anyway. You know what, Cody? What's up? I agree with you completely. Yeah. Also.
Starting point is 00:50:28 Also. Look at us. We did the last chunk of the show without Jonathan. Look at us. We missed him, but we did it. We did miss him. This is where I gracefully transitioned into ending the show. Yeah, and you nailed it.
Starting point is 00:50:40 You did it. That was it. I don't have anybody to ask to plug anything, but. We can plug stuff. Hey, folks, check out my band, The Hot Shapes, on SoundCloud and Bandcamp. We have a new merch store. We do have a new merch store.
Starting point is 00:50:56 That's way better than what I said. That's way better than what you said. Pretend he didn't say that. Don't pretend I didn't say that. Check out the band. Don't pretend. It's good. You'll like it. Yeah, we got a new merch store uh go to shop uh dot some more news dot com it's all there
Starting point is 00:51:12 you can check it out and uh a shirt the design that was uh mysteriously disappeared from our store our old store uh is now back so check out the check him out yeah that's the guy and we're gonna have some new merch coming soon we will uh we do have uh some things in the pipeline and we wanted we just basically wanted to drop the new store in conjunction with uh or in concert with our new episode of some more news which is out uh which is kind of related to just sort of like the a fragile economy on the internet the marketplaces that are platforms that are you know all the things check it out uh it's good and uh we thought that this store drop was appropriate because we are all at the whims of our middlemen overlords correct middlemen overlords a terrifying existence
Starting point is 00:52:07 anywho that's it that's what it is for today we did it we arrived at the end we plugged some stuff we had some laughs we talked about news we had some not laughs we had some not laughs we took it in the ear the fuck and if you have any information on that saying that day, please reach out. And any theory that's not just like, take it in the rear. Probably something else. I don't know. It's not something sexual, is it? I mean, it might have been mangled.
Starting point is 00:52:37 Or maybe someone was like, I'll sneak it in. I don't know. I don't know. I don't know. Help us out. I guess this is where we'll let you guys know. Oh, yeah. We'll write you a thank you note if you let't know. I don't know. I don't know. Help us out. I guess this is where. We'll write you a thank you note if you let us know. Oh, yeah. We'll write you a thank you note if you let us know.
Starting point is 00:52:49 But we'll have to be able to verify your information. Okay. We're done. We're done here, folks. We're out of here. Scram. And you know what? What?
Starting point is 00:52:57 We love you very much. Match. Match. Have you ever heard that story that Napoleon used the Egyptian Sphinx for target practice and shot its nose off? Or maybe you've heard that a French astrologer named Nostradamus correctly predicted nearly 500 years of human history. Or maybe someone told you that the legendary blues guitarist Robert Johnson sold his soul to the devil at a crossroads in Mississippi. These stories are what I like to call historical myths. Great little tales that may or may not have any basis in historical fact. On Our Fake History, we explore these historical myths and try to determine what's fact,
Starting point is 00:53:48 what's fiction, and what is such a good story it simply must be told. If you dig stories about death-obsessed emperors, lost civilizations, desperate sieges, voodoo black magic, and famous historical figures you thought you knew, then Our Fake History might just be your new favorite podcast. If you dig it, then subscribe on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, Stitcher, or wherever you get your podcasts.
