And now here's your host, Graham Rendell. An incident occurred in 1967 where a Peruvian airliner was followed for several hundred miles by a very strong. strange-looking object. The events that are detailed here can be found in the 1968 book by Jim and Coral Lorenzen, UFOs over the Americas. The Lorenzans had founded the Aerial Phenomenon Research Organization, or APRO, back in 1952, to study reports of flying sources. Details of this Peruvian incident had first appeared in the January-February-1967 issue of

Starting point is 00:01:38 the Appro Bulletin. An object shaped like an inverted cone pursued a Peruvian airliner for 800 kilometers on the 4th of February. According to pilot Osvaldo Sanvitti, and confirmed by flight engineer Jorge Santa Maria Calderon, the object stationed itself above the tail of the aircraft, then joined another object and finally both disappeared at supersonic speed. The pilot Osvaldo Sanvitti give his account of what happened. We were at an altitude of 7,000 feet when suddenly I observed a luminous object to the right of the plane.

Starting point is 00:02:14 It was starting to darken. The object emitted a bright light and had the shape of an inverted cone. The object was, more or less, 12 kilometers from our plane, flying at the same speed, at the same altitude, and in the same direction. I saw it make a series of moves at an incredible speed. It launched itself vertically into the air like a dart several times and then returned to its original place. Sanviti was a very experienced pilot with 22,000 hours logged. Among his passengers were a Colonel Alberto Rossell of the Peruvian Army, plus the editor of a Peruvian newspaper Elman Nunes. Calderon, who was mentioned in the APRO report, was a senior professor at the School of Engineers at the University of Peura,

Starting point is 00:03:01 where the aircraft had come from. The force at Airlines Aircraft was flying from the north of the country where Peura is situated, to the south where the capital Lima can be found. The cone-shaped object was first discovered in the vicinity of Chick-Leo. The discovery was made about half-past six in the evening, and Captain San Vitti made a strange announcement over the aircraft's intercom for the benefit of his passengers. This is a call to all passengers. Look out of the portholes on our right. There is a strange object there, and it is watching us. It is a UFO. The newspaper editor Elman Nunes told reporters what happened.

Starting point is 00:03:41 My seat was on the right side. I turned and looked out and saw a very bright object. The object was jumping up and down so fast it was hard to follow its movements. Through the speakers of the plane the captain's voice was heard shouting it is now to our left. I looked out of the left-hand side and saw the object again. It was very close to us. It was shaped like a spinning top that was rotating, throwing beams of orange light from its lower surface.

Starting point is 00:04:10 According to Nunes, the light started to dance around the tail of the aircraft and around to the sides. This frightened the passengers. Many passengers were terrified and some women were on the verge of hysteria. A woman burst into tears, but one of the passengers spoke to her and calmed her down. The children were delighted with the incident. This was just a fun thing for them. but personally I was very nervous and scared.

Starting point is 00:04:37 At one point radio communications with the ground were lost and also the cabin lights started to dim in intensity. Captain San Vitti then saw the object coming straight for him. Then suddenly the UFO shot towards us as if an arrow and flew over the plane. Whilst doing this, it threw out streams of colored lights. I saw that the bottom section of the object was shaped like a funnel. I estimated the diameter of the UFO in its widest dimensions as 70 meters. After passing over us, the UFO was on our left and appeared to be three kilometers away.

Starting point is 00:05:18 The director at Lima Airport, Edwin Boris, had noticed that the Fawcett Airlines DC-4 was no longer transmitting messages. I was worried about the fact that Captain San Vitti was not in touch with us. We could not communicate with him or his plane. After flying around the plane for about an hour, terrorizing the passengers, the UFO suddenly rocketed off into the distance and disappeared over the horizon. Once the UFO had vanished, San Vitti realized that the aircraft's communication systems had returned to normal. He immediately contacted Lima Tower to tell them what had happened. Airport director Edwin Boris again.

Starting point is 00:05:58 I suddenly heard his voice telling me what had happened. He said, a UFO has flown around the plane. plane watching us. My passengers are scared. The incident wasn't over, however. A San Vitti was telling Boris just what had happened. The UFO suddenly reappeared, accompanied by a second almost identical object. The two UFOs flew around the airliner for a few minutes and then departed at high speed and vanished. After San Vitti had landed, he and his crew were taken away for questioning by the military authorities. His passengers were also a power.

Starting point is 00:06:33 questioned. According to reports, one or two civilians on board the aircraft had actually taken pictures of the UFO with their cameras, but the authorities took away the cameras and film of anybody who said they'd taken a picture of the UFO. All but one passenger, that is. This man apparently managed to keep a hold of his role of film and gave it to a newspaper for development on condition that he remained anonymous. The photograph once developed did not show much detail. It's not clear what the photograph shows, but at least it's a record of events that night. What frightened the life out of a Peruvian airliner crew back in 1967? What terrified the aircraft's passengers? What seemingly knocked out radio communications from the aircraft to the ground?

Starting point is 00:07:21 As usual, we have more questions than answers. I'm certainly looking at new and interesting cases to cover here.
