Welcome to bite-sized UFOs,
a show where we break down lesser-known UFO cases in 20 minutes or less.
And now here's your host, Graham Rendell.
Welcome to episode eight of bite-sized UFOs.
I'm Graham Rendell.
author of UFOs Before Roswell and other books about pilot and aircrew sightings during the 1940s and 1950s.
In this installment of bite-sized UFOs, let's look at an interesting case from April 1948 that occurred over the Philippines and involved a flight of F-47 Thunderbolt aircraft.
At around 095 hours on the morning of the 1st of April, 1948, Lieutenant Robert Myers was leading a flight of four F-47 thunderbolts from the 67th
fighter squadron 15th fighter group on a routine training flight over the southeastern region of
Luzon the largest of the islands that make up the Philippines he and his colleagues were some nine
miles southeast of Sosogan when their UFO sighting occurred the f47 was the post-war designation
given to the wartime p-47 thunderbolt a sturdy piston-engine fighter aircraft that was often nicknamed
the joke although not as well known as the p-51 Mustang Thunderbolt
had served on all fronts during the war with various Allied air forces, in addition to the US Army Air Force.
It was still a reasonably fast airplane for 1948 and would continue to equip numerous squadrons until the Korean War was well underway.
At the time of the UFO sighting, the 67 fighter squadrons were based at Clark Field, around 40 miles from the capital, Manila.
Flying at 1,500 feet, Myers suddenly spotted an object around to the ground.
three miles to the east of him, 1,000 feet below, and estimated to be travelling at some 200 miles an hour.
The pilot turned to intercept with the intention of establishing its identity.
Shortly after he turned his thunderbolt to pursue the object, it suddenly turned 90 degrees to the left,
levelled out and accelerated into the distance, disappearing in just five seconds.
Myers had it under observation for about a minute in total.
According to a summary compiled by Project Sign, the first to fifth,
the United States Air Force UFO investigation program, the pilot reported the object seemed to be some sort of flying wing, almost half moon in shape, with what may have been a barely visible dorsal fin. He estimated its width to be around 30 feet, with a length of around 20 feet. It was silver in colour. The leader was the only pilot in his formation to witness the object, and he was unable to inform his wingman of its presence, as his radio was unserviceable.
The positions of the other three F-47s in the formation apparently prevented their pilots from seeing the object.
For an object of its apparent size to pass beyond visual perception range,
it has been estimated that the object had to be accelerating to nearly 40,000 miles per hour
to disappear out of sight in just five seconds.
Assuming this estimate was out by even a factor of 20,
then that would still mean that the object was moving in around 2,000 miles per hour,
well beyond any known aircraft's capabilities in 1948.
Under the category of maneuvers, the Project Sign Index card lists the following description,
revealed great acceleration.
Despite this, the official evaluation was that the mysterious half-moon-shaped object
was nothing more than a bird.
Some bird.
Featuring a forward by George Knapp, my book Dawn of the Flying Sources,
which also includes the April 1948 incident over the Philippines
is now available via Amazon.
It can be bought in e-book, softback, or hardback formats.
