One cold night in December of 1957, a woman was awakened out of her slumber by a bright flag. of light. Upon looking out her window, she saw a huge close object that she believed was a plane going down. However, as she continued watching, she realized that not only was this not a plane, but also that the object was not moving at all. It was simply hovering right outside of her window. Today, we are going to be discussing the fascinating case of the old Saybrook squares.
Starting point is 00:01:29 Around two or three o'clock in the morning of December 16, 1957, a woman by the name of Mary Star was awakened by a bright light shining in the window of her cottage near Old Saybrook, Connecticut. Now, when she saw this and vaguely saw an object outside, she actually thought that it was the lighted fuselage of a plane going down. And it was so close to her cottage that she actually thought that, oh my gosh, I'm pretty much right in the flight path of the plane crash, and she was worried that the wing was going to rip right through her bedroom wall. However, it was at this point that she realized that it was completely soundless. and suddenly the object completely stopped. She said that the object appeared like a long black oval
Starting point is 00:02:10 with a row of small blue lights around the rim, and that on the face of the object she could see four bright portholes. Now, through these portholes, Star claimed to see what she referred to as stewards, passing each other carrying trays. Now, she later described these beings as standing about three and a half to four feet tall and effectively looking almost like walking jackets. Now, she described, again, that they appeared to be wearing stewards jackets. However, she said that, and to quote, the skirt of the jacket formed short legs.
Starting point is 00:02:42 So, like, yeah, the jacket itself was kind of walking like short legs, I guess. Now, both entities that she saw had their right arm raised with a hand holding this horizontal object, which she initially called a tray, and then later, when discussing the incident, referred to as possibly some sort of stabilizing rod. Their heads were reddish rectangular masks, which rested on their shoulders, and she said that in the center of one entity's, you know, I guess you could say face or faceplate, there appeared to be a bright red bulb. She said that as she was watching the stewards moving on the inside of this object, the whole thing began to glow in a way that she described as like burnished brass, and the portholes vanished. She then said that a small antenna came out of the object and began whirring around. This continued for about 10 minutes and then the antenna withdrew and all of the lights went out.
Starting point is 00:03:34 The object began moving first back from the direction it had come, then suddenly it made a sharp turn. It continued on, narrowly missing both Mrs. Starr's spruce tree and her tool shed and then shot straight up into the air. Now this is a really cool case to me because, you know, not only is the case itself, you know, very interesting and super bizarre with the description of the little beings like pretty much airline stewards. But because after the initial investigation by both the National Investigations Committee on Aerial Phenomena and the Civilian Sasser Intelligence of New York, Mrs. Starr actually wrote her own account entitled My Visitor from Outer Space for the Flying Sasser Review. And, you know, it's just great because, of course, you have the initial interviews,
Starting point is 00:04:14 and then you also have her account, which was a considerable time after the event. But it still was cool to hear her discussing the case in her own words and also kind of kind of revisiting it and again from a very euphological standpoint, a very technological standpoint, trying to make sense of what she had seen. Now again, as with many cases that I have been discussing recently, this is one which was begun by light phenomena. It even awakened her in this case. And you know, again, I've mentioned this countless times now. It does seem like light anomalies seem to be a huge catalyst for these sorts of encounters. And so in this case, you know, It was begun by this bright flashing light and actually when the encounter ended, all of the lights went out.
Starting point is 00:04:57 So we kind of have sort of two bookends in a way to this encounter. Now, the thing that I find most intriguing about this case, however, is the immense sense of ridiculousness, which to me seems almost like a nonsense born of sense. You know, if we go by the concept that many anomalous encounters are sort of the same core concept or same, you know, if we go by Paul Deferos theory in Earthlights, the same substance or energy. that clothe themselves in the beliefs of a certain time or culture, Star really imprinted her initial concept of a plane on this event, as nonsensical as little walking steward jackets are. They kind of appear as fragments of normality, stewards on a plane through some distorted looking glass,
Starting point is 00:05:41 turning into walking steward jackets on a UFO. Now, kind of to follow up this point, the rest of the encounter, you know, when you read through her first-hand account in Flying Sasser Review, still has her thinking of this in a very euphological technological construct. You know, from the weird little antenna, which she referred to as signaling for directions, or when the stewards turned to look at her, she said that there was a red bulb in the center
Starting point is 00:06:04 of one of their face plates, almost like some sort of robot-like entity. You can see that, again, she's still trying to make sense of this encounter in the framework that makes the most sense to her, that of some sort of material and technological object.
