Starting point is 00:01:10 strangeness. Today we are going to be discussing the absolutely fascinating case of the slouchy Stockton Spooks. Now this event occurred in the small hours of July 3rd, 1955, and involved a woman by the name of Margaret Simmons and her husband Wesley. They were on a road trip driving from Cincinnati down to visit some friends who lived in Florida. When around 3.30, in the morning, they passed through the small town of Stockton, Georgia. Now, as they passed through the town and got back onto the open road, Margaret was driving, and her husband Wesley was asleep in the back of the car. Now, for the setup of this event, Margaret stated a bunch of facts about the night in question. She said that it was a clear night, the moon was shining. As soon as they hit the
Starting point is 00:01:54 open road, there were no houses, no real ambient light from the countryside, so visibility was very good, especially because she had her brights on. She was going around 60 miles per hour. She was awake and chewing gum to keep herself alert. When all of a sudden, on the road in front of her, she saw what she at first thought were a group of hogs or some other type of animal. So she immediately reduced her speed so she wouldn't plow right over them. And as she approached, she continued decreasing her speed to around 40 when she saw that, as a matter of fact, these were not some stray pigs at all. No, as a matter of fact, what Margaret came into contact with on that desolate country road was a group of four, three and three,
Starting point is 00:02:35 and a half to four foot tall beings. She said that they had short legs and very long arms and were humanoid, with big roundish heads which came to a pointed chin and a pointed nose that Margaret described as almost witchlike. She said that they had big red eyes without pupils. And honest of all, however, is that the witness claimed that she could differentiate, it looked like they were wearing gray colored capes, which covered up most of their body, as well as what she described as a slouch hat turned down all the way around. Now, there was an extremely cartoonish drawing of the beings in the Cincinnati Post, which I will just say right now they look like they could definitely be a breakfast cereal mascot. Now, as Margaret approached these strange beings, she said that the one closest to her
Starting point is 00:03:20 path moved out of the way and looked directly at her through her car window, raising its arms above its head and revealing long claw-like hands. Shades of Kelly Hopkinsville, anybody? the other three continued on doing what they were doing as though they didn't even notice her going by at all. They seemed to be gathered around one of the beings which held a stick. Margaret said that it kind of hunched over the stick which it grasped with both hands and appeared to be digging or poking at the ground. On this point, Margaret actually said that her very first thought, especially with the pointed nose, was that of a witch and its broomstick.
Starting point is 00:03:55 Now, Margaret said that as soon as she saw what the beings were, she turned to avoid them and screamed. Now, as soon as she was past them, she laid on the gas and peeled out of there, which combined with a scream, woke her sleeping husband, who wanted to return. He wanted to see these bizarre things. Now, unsurprisingly, she refused. As she is quoted saying in the post article, it does sound like a strange story when you tell it, but it isn't when you see it. It scares you. Now, this case, even though it was relatively short and really there was not much interaction between the experiencer and the experienced, it yields a lot of of surprisingly poignant and bizarre details. I mean, again, yeah, there's not super much interaction. You know, this is one of those classic kind of car passing type sightings, which, again, it's so cool because, you know, so often you think of that, you think especially crypted such as Bigfoot. You know, someone's driving along, they see Bigfoot crossed the road, and then it's kind of over. And in this case, you know, we have a very similar thing where it's this collection of bizarre, you know, they were referred to almost as like gnomes in a lot of the
Starting point is 00:04:56 early articles about this case. Just chilling in the middle of the road and someone sees them, drives by, and keeps driving very fast. But again, it yields a lot of really bizarre details. The very first thing that stood out to me was the presence of the stick. Now, immediately, it calls to mine for me the Honeycutt encounter as well as my recent Wawatosa Weirdo's episode. Both of these involved beings holding onto some sort of object. And Honeycutts encounter, it's very similar because, again, it was experienced on a roadway. There was a small group of entities, and one of them was holding what appeared to be a chain or rod. Now, in the Wawatosa one, we have a kind of clearer stick or staff type example of these beings that were carrying almost a wizard staff, which they would wrap on the ground.
Starting point is 00:05:42 In this case, however, we have the being poking or digging in the earth. This is something of really weird little detail that I've noticed across many different paranormal encounters. Of course, there's a lot of classic UFO occupant encounters where the occupants are said to be poking at the ground or digging in the ground. In the strictly, you know, euphological kind of way of thinking, people often believe that, oh, they're taking soil samples or stuff like that. Again, if you go way back to the fairy faith, you know, it would be seen just as natural because the good folk had this connection to the land. Now, it's not simply UFO encounters, though. I mean, there have been sightings of cryptids, such as Bigfoot or Man. Wild digging in the earth. There was a fantastic case in one of Linda Godfrey's works where this upright canid was kind of scratching at the ground near an effigy mound. There's also kind of
Starting point is 00:06:34 two very different responses in this group of entities. Now, it's interesting because it seems that as often as we notice the phenomenon, the phenomenon also notices us. However, there are also accounts where it's not the complete opposite happens. You know, we see something really bizarre going on, and it seems to be just completely oblivious that anyone is watching it. And in this case, you effectively have both of these responses. You have the three beings, the two of which were gathered around the guy poking at the ground, that just don't even notice that a car is hurtling right by. It's still a fairly high rate of speed, whereas the one entity, which was directly in her path, turned and not only just kind of noticed her, but locked eyes
Starting point is 00:07:17 with her, which again brings up the concept that I'm very interested in recently, where these paranormal entities seem to just stare at people, you know, for as much as, again, as we see them, it's like they're trying to say that they see us. Now, regarding the entities themselves, there was some talk that, you know, oh, what if she had just seen a group of owls standing in the middle of the road? And again, you know, anything's possible. I will never be skeptical about skepticism, if that makes sense. I'll never be dogmatically against skepticism, is what I'm trying to say.
Starting point is 00:07:49 do I think that she witnessed owls? No. And that is largely because it's kind of like the Flatwoods phenomenon where, you know, these people are going out to look at this fallen meteor, they see eyes in the tree and their first thought isn't spaceman. It's not alien robot. It's, oh, it's a raccoon. And then it ended up being the Flatwoods monster. So in this case as well, she sees these, you know, four strange things in the road ahead. Immediately Margaret Simmons thinks, oh, it's just some wild hogs. It's just some animals in the road. And so, Again, I think that the concept that people immediately jump to the craziest, most out there conclusion really often isn't the case.
Starting point is 00:08:28 Now, speaking, though, of kind of the silhouette of, like, the weird cloak-like thing that they were apparently wearing, this is something I've also noticed across many different paranormal encounters. I mean, the first one to come to mind is one of the very early sightings of the infamous Mothman of Point Pleasant, where people said that it looked like it was just kind of this man in a cloak-like covering. Bigfoot has often been described as being cloaked in hair, and then of course you have the many ghosts and banshees seen wearing daisy veils which kind of cover them. So I think that the inclusion of this in, for all intents and purposes, a far more, you know, euphological genre experience is definitely interesting. Now, it's interesting, too, because Margaret actually waited to report this sighting. When she told her friends about it in Florida, they actually said, oh, don't go public with that.
Starting point is 00:09:15 People are going to think you're crazy. Now, eventually she did, and she even drew up a sworn affidavit as to what she had witnessed. And, two, it's just interesting to see because this occurred in the wake of Kelly Hopkinsville. And so the Cincinnati Post article was actually titled, Cincinnati and saw the little green men too. Now, this is also interesting because it caused a major mix-up with the color of the beings, which in the paper were referred to again as little green men, whereas Margaret said, no, as a matter of fact, they were gray.
Starting point is 00:09:42 This is also interesting because it does kind of seem almost like a pre-year-old. precursor to the widespread sightings of the grays, which would become far more prevalent in the ensuing decades. You know, you have these little kind of bobble-headed gray beings with a pointed chin, big eyes. So yeah, it's just really neat to see this kind of preliminary sighting of something, which will then become the image of the, you know, alien phenomenon.
