This is Sounds Like a Cult, a comedy cult podcast about the modern day cults we all follow.
Well obviously toxic relationships are a get-the-fuck-out level cult,
but the trouble is that nobody gets involved with what they know to be a toxic relationship.
I'm Issa Medina and I'm a comedian. I'm Amanda Montell, author of the book Cultish.
And we're just two pals who are obsessed with talking about everyday groups that put the cult
in culture. We love a before and after. We love a makeover. Yes. We love a transformation because
it shows us that the American dream can be for anyone. I think nothing good comes from like
signing up for a diet that somebody else is profiting from. On season one of our show,
we covered culty communities like SoulCycle, multi-level marketing, celebrity mega churches,
and more to try and figure out whether they were a live your life, a watch your back,
or a get-the-fuck-out level cult. And now, thanks to our new podcast studio,
All Things Comedy, we're relaunching the show on a weekly basis to bring you even more of the
zeitgeist cults you want to hear about, including Trader Joe's, Diet Culture, Instagram therapists,
and more. When you think of the cult of Trader Joe's, what instantly springs to mind for you?
Where they give you the free, the free samples. Oh, the samples. I'm like this next section.
You only want free food. You go to Trader Joe's just to eat the free samples.
If you're interested in exploring the groups and gurus that have made our culture so zealous
and divided, but also want to laugh and hang out and not feel too hopelessly bummed out,
then this is the show for you. Well, there is that quote, a cult is like porn,
you know it when you see it. Yes. But I don't actually think that's true because
cultishness is in the eyes of the beholder. But in the meantime, stay culty, but not too culty.
Stream sounds like a cult wherever you get your podcasts.
