Start With A Win - Carrying Kindness Beyond the Holiday Season

Episode Date: December 25, 2019

When you break down Christmas traditions beyond the events and quirky activities that each family participates in every year, you find that the real purpose behind those traditions is to buil...d community and provide a platform for unconditional sharing. These traditions draw families and friends together like little else can, and Adam suggests that this unique cohesion should become a bigger part of our lives day-in and day-out, from the end of December to the middle of March to the beginning of August. The people in your life are all there for a season, and you never know when your life circumstances are going to change, so why not spend time with the people who matter most to you right now? Reach out a helping hand, send that encouraging text, show up for them when they need a friend, treat them to coffee, and be quick to serve. When you make giving and caring a part of your daily life, you will start anticipating the needs of others and thinking of yourself less and less, but within a true community, your acts of kindness will be returned right when you need them most. Don’t overthink it when someone comes to mind: give them a call, send them a text, or pop by their office over lunch to check in with them and strengthen those bonds. You will never regret giving the gift of happiness.Connect with Adam:https://www.startwithawin.com/ https://www.facebook.com/REMAXAdamContoshttps://twitter.com/REMAXAdamContos https://www.instagram.com/REMAXadamcontos/ Leave us a voicemail:888-581-4430

Starting point is 00:00:37 enjoying some eggnog. Eggnog latte? That's right. Kayla likes a good eggnog latte. Social media manager Kayla likes a good eggnog latte that's right you know kayla kayla likes a good eggnog latte social media manager kayla likes a good eggnog latte yeah she does she's very she's into those festive things like the pumpkin spice latte you like the pumpkin spice latte kayla she's nodding her head yes she is not on mic but she is saying absolutely win nation that's right the PSL and the eggnog latte. That's right. The PSL and the E-N-L.
Starting point is 00:01:10 Merry Christmas, Wynn Nation. Yeah, Merry Christmas. Yeah. Glad you decided to listen to us while you're cooking your turkey or maybe wrapping some last-minute gifts before you head over to the in-laws. Oh, fun. Whatever. Maybe you're even traveling, right? You're driving to get Christmas dinner right now,
Starting point is 00:01:27 but hey, you're listening. You're with us. Mark, do you have any Christmas traditions that you go through in your household? I've always felt like a family that has traditions is stronger and more grounded and more connected. And so my wife and I have always tried to do things that build tradition and those kind of things. And so during the holidays, we do a lot of different things, but one in particular, and it's fun because my in-laws get in on it. And I think my mother-in-law kind of started this where everyone kind of picks a song and then we do like a lip sync battle in the basement. And it's, yeah, it's pretty epic. It gets pretty rowdy. And it's cool too, because we have ages from six years old all the way up to, well, my
Starting point is 00:02:07 in-laws are in there. Are you going to go Facebook Live with this or anything? You know, I- Maybe a TikTok. TikTok. Yeah, doing a- So last year was pretty epic. Last year, everyone kind of keeps it secret what they're going to do.
Starting point is 00:02:22 And so last year, we did a theme song from the greatest showman. Okay. And my wife was Hugh Jackman, you know, with the top hat and all that kind of stuff. And I was hiding behind stage. And when it was my part, I busted out of the curtains and I was the bearded lady. Whoa. I had the wig on the, the Moo Moo. It was awesome. And the beard and the beard. Exactly. It's the perfect part for me. I don't know how I'm going to shake this. You won't be able to sleep tonight? No, but total respect for you, Mark.
Starting point is 00:02:53 Hey, thanks. You get up on stage and own it, man. You have to own it. You have to throw in that alter ego and then become. Go all in. That's right. It's like our podcast here. Go all in.
Starting point is 00:03:03 That's right. Going all in. What about you? It's like our podcast here. Go all in. That's right. Going all in. What about you? Do you have any Christmas holiday things? We have all of our family over on Christmas Eve to our house, kind of the wine and cheese party, the kids open gifts, things like that. Because you've got a brother and sister in town? Yeah, yeah.
Starting point is 00:03:18 So they all come over, and mom and dad, stuff like that. So the dogs run around and get to eat whatever falls on the floor. And people have fun. So it's just a good time. So I think that's already scheduled. Nice. Yeah. The wine and cheese time.
Starting point is 00:03:32 That's it. Yeah. Christmas Eve every year. That's awesome. And of course, there's the cookie party. My wife does the cookie party every year. And you go home and I'm like, ah, there goes the diet for like two weeks. Until I can eat
Starting point is 00:03:45 all those cookies. You will not, you're dedicated. You will not stop until those cookies are gone. I have a total weakness for cookies, man. Really? Yeah. We were talking about this yesterday. I go, why do you do this?
Starting point is 00:03:55 And she goes, I love doing this. I go, they're cookies. They're like, they're like little calorie monsters running around. They're void of any nutritional value. Yeah, totally. And then she goes any nutritional value. Yeah, totally. And then she goes, you can enjoy life, Mr. Discipline. Oh, that's good. But I have a question for you.
Starting point is 00:04:12 We talk about all this giving. We talk about community, family, things like that. When do we have to wait until one time a year to do this? Isn't that interesting? That is interesting, because it seems like it's something that we could kind of be doing throughout the year. Right. Giving, being kind, how people tell each other Merry Christmas or Happy Holidays or happy whatever your holiday of choice is. People are nonjudgmental. They're friendly. They smile a lot.
Starting point is 00:04:41 They hug a lot. They give gifts. They give gifts unconditionally. Yeah. You know, there's nothing worse than somebody goes, oh, what'd you get me? I mean, you go, really? You know, you should be giving. Just give and don't expect. But we should be doing this all the time.
Starting point is 00:05:02 We should be caring about each other that much the other 364 days a year. We choose a celebration holiday in order to carry that forward. But ultimately, you don't know how long that person's going to be in your life. Maybe they move, maybe something tragic happens. Who knows what it is, but you got to take advantage of that time that you have to be kind to people and build community all the time. And it's interesting because when we look at WinNation and the agents and the brokers and things like that, we do see some offices that do that. We do see some agents that do that that'll go and help the community, be it build houses for the homeless, work at a shelter, if nothing more than just contacting their friends or their acquaintances and saying, thank you, I appreciate you, I miss you, let's grab a cup of coffee or
Starting point is 00:05:52 something like that. And that's really how you build community. Totally is. Right? Is being intentional and being consistent. Yeah. It's consistent caring. It's not occasional or convenience caring. It's, I care about these people enough to make it a point to reach out to them and just say, I care about you. Every now and then I'll be driving home. I'll just pick up the phone and call you. I'll say, hey, what's up, buddy? And you'll go, hey, how's it going? Buddy. Yeah. It's fun to do that. That's why I love going to these different events that we have in our business. We have 128,000 close friends in the real estate network of REMAX in WinNation here. And then I have a whole bunch that are in real estate that are not part of REMAX, which is great. And I get
Starting point is 00:06:39 to see them at events also. And we hug each other. We have a cup of coffee, or we hang out and talk, things like that, but we care about each other as human beings. And that's what I think makes this world go round is that thought. Nobody wants anything or expects anything from each other, except for kindness, which is you should expect kindness out of society. And if somebody is not willing to provide that, go find someone else to hang out with. We need to expect that out of people. A beautiful message for a fantastic time of year that we get to celebrate and enjoy family time and reflect on this past year and all the great things that have gone on. Go find out how many people you can hug today. Yeah. Go hug some
Starting point is 00:07:23 peoples. Hug some peoples, give a gift of happiness A high five if you don't want to hug them Side hug Fist bump, just say what's up Something like that But just smile at people, right? Yeah, I love that Go pay it forward, go buy the person behind you in line
Starting point is 00:07:38 An eggnog latte Might be Kayla That's right, you never know He may be buying Kayla an eggnog latte. That's right. Well, awesome. Win Nation. Thank you guys. We love you. We wish you all the best. Merry Christmas. Have an amazing holiday. Happy holidays. There you go. Happy holidays. There's many celebrations. And let's make 2020 the new decade. It's going to be the 20s again, Mark. Dude, I'm excited. We got a lot of great segments coming up this next year.
Starting point is 00:08:06 A new intro. I mean, it's going to be tune in next week because it's going to be the roaring 20s. Super awesome. Oh, yeah. It's surprising. You're going to be blown away. Am I setting the expectations too high here? No, man.
Starting point is 00:08:20 No. Because it's even better than that. We're going to just kill those expectations. That's right. Also, if you are listening to this, this is a treat, but go over to startwithawin.com. And on our website is a number that you can call in and leave a voicemail with a question or a comment.
