Chapter 115 - Donald Finden. It's 5.50pm on 20th February 2022 and Richard heads outside and is surprised to see that it's lightly raining. He does not know what is to come. I do not think it is hyperbole to say that what he encounters is as challenging as climbing Everest, but it's been transplanted to the bottom of the Marianas Trench without oxygen or feet. No spoilers but if you are of a nervous disposition or don't want to hear a 54 year-old man calling for his mummy then do not listen to this chapter.

Stone Clearing with Richard Herring. It's the 20th of February 2022. It's 1750. What time that is in normal time? It's raining. It's evening time. There's still a little brightness in the air, but I think it's going to be dark by the time I get home.

We're heading off to the field, the one field that I've stone-cleared in. And this is... Everything is normal, don't worry. Some of you may know that there's a secret stone-clearing podcast. Let's get a couple of pebbles out for the alpha and omega guys. That's the alpha. You do have to stone-clearing whatever the weather conditions.

And day and night. You can't just come out when it's sunny. You can't just come out when you feel like it. Of course, there is another storm on the way today. I don't think it's going to hit here, but I haven't checked really. So let's see. That could be quite exciting if I get hit, of course, in the storm. There's vertical rain flying in my face.

And as long as it's checked, we're definitely recording what we are. It seems to be working well now, the new system, but let's settle up, jinxed it. Fantastic excitement of pink being involved last week. Let's see. Nothing's pink now. The pink bucket's gone. It's just grey.

I've got a torch that's picking up some brown. A little bit of green. It's basically grey and brown. If you just look at the environment with a pitter-patter of raindrops. Just see the stone. Three stones together, actually. Small ones, but together. And they make a small medium, I'd say.

I'm not going to put them all. They were together, but I'm actually going to separate them. They weren't sibling stones. You will be able to tell sibling stones, they actually fit together like a jigsaw, and they must not be separated. But other stones are just aligned with each other. Sometimes you listen to them, they say, I don't want to be with this guy anymore.

I've been with him for eternity. Let me go somewhere else. So I listen to the stones. Liffon to the photon, my friends. It's there in the theme tune. For they felt bingy and merry dance. You have to listen to the lyrics. They tell you a lot.

They literally don't lick. Oh, fuck. I don't know. I literally tell you a merry dance. They tell you the merry dance. Maybe the merry dance is life. Maybe the merry dance is the tricks that stones will play on you. But leave me.

There's plenty of those. Maybe the merry dance is coming out in the freezing cold. No gloves on today. I'm using my boots a little bit. Let's stick one to the curb there. Nicely. Once off the field, I'll just kick the bit further off the field. And, you know, I do reveal most of the secrets of stone clearing in this podcast,

but there are certain secrets that must be kept from those who would like to know, those who shall not be named, the stone starsy. They shall not be named. And I just think the stone starsy won't pay £3 a month to listen to this, but they might have chance to cross it. Just a few, a few things have made me think, maybe people have heard about this outside of the honourable band of stone clearers. Many of you, of course, in the Stone Clearers Guild, know the importance of secrecy.

And not everyone is as honourable as maybe you are. I'm not enjoying myself. I can tell you that. But I'm just being hit in the face with what feels like very tiny stones. It's just icy water. And the thing with icy water, when the sun does come out, the ice does melt. Sorry, the ice does melt. It's not ice.

Some translations have it as ice. But when the fun comes out, the photons, they are the same. Unless the photons are thrown into the fun, in which case they generally melt then. It takes something quite extraordinary to change the composition of stone, that Hurricane Eunice is not one of them. Sorry, Storm Eunice.

Storm Franklin isn't one of them. Some rain isn't one of them, although over a long period of time, some rain will change the stones. But if you want to change them quick, you need some kind of very hot furnace, I would have mentioned, or a big jackhammer. Some kind. And I don't have either of those with me.

Ah, what was going in my eye? Right, we're at the can in the corner of the field now. Wolfie's off a lead. Come on, Donnie. Here we go. Can the corner a little, just putting a small one on top of there. It hasn't really grown.

It's not the can that never grows. We don't go to that can anymore. We haven't been across that field for a long time. The path's changed, so it doesn't ride to the can that never grows. Perhaps the can was growing too much. So the stones diverted the path away to keep it. That's now you've not become a travel thief. I'm going to don't think any stone stars are about to be out tonight.

I have to tell you that. Come on, Wolfs. I think we're safe to have Wolfie off the lead. You know, famous lots of words. What do you think, Wolfs? How's it going? Listen to the baton, my friend. What are they about?

They do sing, really. That's the thing. They're talking in a very malicious way. Like, dogs in the night. Some of them, they all got different accents. This is part of the job that you will only really get to here. After four or five years. Stones talking to you like they're Donald Findon.

Some of you only know who Donald Findon is. Of course, and you're the same. Well, that's why is that. Stone talking to me in that plummy fashion. I'm not saying Donald Stone, Donald Findon was a stone. Far from it. That's a lot of stones aspire to be Donald Findon. The copper is for us.

But they all have their individual voice. Just a lot of them choose Donald Findon. Trying to get some trees, sometimes into the branches of the trees there. That's just a bit of fun, really. There's no science behind that. There's no stone clearing law that says you have to put stones in the branches.

But when they're tightly, when your branches are all together like twiggy cups, there's that temptation just to throw a stone in there. They stay there for some good time. Some like the spring back into the field. At the point that it falls out, it will just fall to the calmness into the ground. But if it stays, imagine,

in a thousand years time, you will see a stone in the tree here. What's that about? Think about the people in a thousand years time. Okay, of course, from the main can. Looking very sad, I have to say. Point it at it, it just looks like a scree of stones rather than a can.

Doesn't look like anyone's even. I'm going to put a couple more on, see if that helps. It's very flat, it's flattened out. Oh! And now into open field now as we cross over. Extremely unpleasant. You all right, Lucy, with me?

I have been hailed on before, not in the podcast, I don't think, lightning. That's not happening today at the moment. But the field is, it has become a stocean beneath me, really. A very shallow one, but watery. Ah! I've seen a couple of stones.

Some people said, you know, don't go out. They're wearing stones in a storm. I said, do you even understand what stone clearing is? Do you think, you know, the stone clearers of 1989 or wherever it was, didn't clear stones, they did. You know, sometimes it was really windy, the stones could actually get moved. Fuck it.

You can see there's a light from the houses and just this spray, I guess. It's like a swarm of fireflies. But they're not fireflies, they're iceflies. And they're not flies, they're water. They're ice water. They're not good, they're fireflies. They're iceflies.

I'm literally my north face. Okay, I just stopped at an accident with my finger because it was stopped. Okay. I think it was at 14,000. Okay. I do not like this. I do not like it at all.

But at least it's... At least we're not in the thick of it. I am actually in a small, rivulet stream as I walk down towards the Elf and I'll be again. I'm glad I stayed manly and I didn't come cowardly during any of that. It's important. You've got to be...

You're going to be a woman and be a man. But you have to be a man. In these circumstances, you can't... Come here. I mean, it would be funnier if none of that did come out. I might still be through it all. I'll see how it's going through.
