Starting point is 00:00:03 Hi, he's Dave Shumka And he's Graham Clark And together we host Stop Podcasting Yourself Woo! Hey, welcome to episode number 955 A stop podcasting yourself My name's Graham Clark With me as always
Starting point is 00:00:29 As a man who, like me, is still locked into Soccer fever, Mr. Dave Shumka Yeah, I'm locked into it Yeah, why am... How have you been locked into it? I... Man, yesterday? No, yeah, yesterday or the day before
Starting point is 00:00:45 watching the England Congo game Oh Congo had England On the run Congo so bad That I had them in my pool As an Irish
Starting point is 00:00:55 Man Well you're not I guess you have a passport I do have a passport I have an Irish descendant Sort of an Irish rover Yeah Do you
Starting point is 00:01:09 Hate England I wanted Congo To upset Yeah well I want every team To upset Now here's the thing that I didn't know about England until I watched the game. Their captain and the guy who scored the only goals of the game is named Harry Kane.
Starting point is 00:01:24 Yes. Do they call him the hurricane? I think they do. Okay. You didn't come up with it. No, no, no. But I was like, I assume this is, because he's a force. I think he's a little am Arikine.
Starting point is 00:01:34 All right. The other thing that's on my mind right now before we get to our guest is I, this morning, had to, like, we have these candles, these scented candles. And one of ours was like All crooked Like wax on one side So I had to do some candle surgery I had to rearrange some wax
Starting point is 00:01:54 But now my fingers Smell so perfumy Hey let us all smell your fingers You smell my finger You'll be thinking I got to third base with Coco Chanel But it's really getting in the way of enjoying food So if anyone is like Needs a crash diet
Starting point is 00:02:12 Get some scent of candles Get some sand canals, put your fingers in them, and then you won't be wanting any Doritos. Yeah. Curb that subdog. We'll talk about those later. Our guest today, first time guest on the podcast, he and his partner are going to be traveling all across Canada with their couples clownsling show. He's very funny comedian. Aaron Campbell, hello, Aaron.
Starting point is 00:02:39 How are you? So good. So good. Someone told me two days ago, I look like Harry Kane. No. No. I don't. No, maybe, let's see you head a ball into goal.
Starting point is 00:02:49 I'm very good. Honestly, maybe Harry Potter. Harry Potter? I got Harry Potter my whole life. Yeah. My whole damn life. Those round glasses, you should have got them? Do you have run glasses in school?
Starting point is 00:02:58 No, never. Just glasses. Glass is enough for people to. Oh, but you also have that lightning star. You do have that lightning star. And you're always whipping out that wand to yours saying, Hocus McPocas or whatever. That's awesome.
Starting point is 00:03:12 It is. That is awesome. Should we get to know us? Yeah. To know us. Aaron, tell us about this tour you're going on. Tell us about the show,
Starting point is 00:03:27 because I've been on the show, and it's been a ton of fun. Yes. Explain. Graham and Sally were on the show. They crushed it. One-timer club. Well, we're waiting in the wings.
Starting point is 00:03:38 We've got a lot of crazy stuff planned for part two. Do you get a jet? jacket for the one time. Do you get a jacket? You get a blow pop with your name on it? Did we give you a tote bag? Yeah, we did. Yeah, I have the tote bag.
Starting point is 00:03:50 Not everyone gets a tote bag. Really? Yeah. I use that tote bag. That's awesome. What are you toting? Oh, you know, M&Ms and, you know, maybe sometimes it's rainy like this. An umbrella.
Starting point is 00:04:01 Yeah. Yeah. Smart. Yeah. So the show is me and my partner cast, we're both comedians. She's been on the show, one-timer's club. Yeah. She's been on the one-timer club.
Starting point is 00:04:10 No, she's not going to get a return guest. It's one and done. We interview comedians and their partners, stand-up comedians and their non-commodian partners, and we let the audience ask questions, anonymous relationship questions. Yeah. And we just pose it and riff it and have a good time. It's a really good time. It's a really fun time.
Starting point is 00:04:31 It's so fun that you're going on tour. Yeah, you're going... It's normally a little mountain gallery. Yeah. All the time. It's on every day. Six days a week. I'm exhausted.
Starting point is 00:04:42 Um, you are going to how many cities? Uh, all the big ones. Okay, so you're going to cam loops. You're going to Red Deer. You're going to Brandon. You're going to Oakville. I overspoke. I overspoke.
Starting point is 00:04:57 You're going to all. And finally, you're wrapping it up with a show in St. John's New Brunswick. No, St. John, New Brunswick. St. John, yes. Where are you going? We have to, because of the nature of the show, we have to go where there actually is a comedy scene.
Starting point is 00:05:11 Hmm. because we need comedians and their partners. Oh, right. So smaller scenes, you can do them, and we're going to try them. But a lot of these small scenes, the comedians don't have partners. Yeah. Honestly, that's a problem with every scene. Every scene has that problem.
Starting point is 00:05:28 Yeah. It's kind of like a lot of comedians are like, you know, when I'm single, that's when I write my best material. That's true. It's, they're sort of like songwriters in that way. And it's, you know what? I feel like there's not enough comedians that have material about relationships and how hard it is to date. It's new ground. That's why I'm going around this country doing my dogs are different than cats tour.
Starting point is 00:05:55 It's getting locals to talk about it to bring their dog or cat. Actually, good idea for the show. That's kind of the implication for starting the show. Yeah. A lot of people have tons of material about their partners. And I was like, what do they have to say? Yeah. And it's the people that do talk about the relationships and it's like, oh, their partners are.
Starting point is 00:06:11 They have it in the chamber. They're ready to bring it back. And I was on the show, and the other couple that was on the show was so nervous to be on the show. And you guys, you really, you smoothed it out. You really, like, made them feel welcome and stuff because I was like, these guys are going to, they're going to die on stage. They're so afraid to be up there. That's Cass. That's Cass, the warmth of Cass.
Starting point is 00:06:33 She's good at dealing with the talent. Yeah. Because I'm nervous as hell before every show, too. Do you, what is your pre-show ritual? What do you do? Stress. Stress out. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:06:44 Well, I just set a magical. Focus, focus. Let this go with. Yeah. Something matronas. Chill out on my dill out. Yes. Yeah, what's, uh, because I feel like everybody has kind of a pre-show ritual, but yours is like white hot panic.
Starting point is 00:07:04 Well, well, we're also setting up the show. So I'm getting there like two hours early. I'm setting up cameras. I'm like doing all the tech. You do the toilet cam, right? You're in charge of that? The candy camera, yeah. Oh, yeah, I forgot.
Starting point is 00:07:17 It's mostly a prank show. It's all pranks. I mean, they're setting out hidden cameras. But these people don't know. We have a sick audience. My pre-show ritual is, it's lose yourself by Eminem on a loop.
Starting point is 00:07:34 On headphones and you're rapping in the corner, getting ready. Although they're definitely in my time as a comedian. where a lot of comedians did that. That was their warm-up. That song's great for open-mic comedy. When I was an open-mic comedian, I was like, this guy gets it so much.
Starting point is 00:07:51 So he wrote it for them, it's amazing. What was the, in the Michael Jordan documentary, the Bulls documentary, he was listening to an album, like he was listening to music on his discmen in 1997 or something? Who was it? It was like the new Donnie Gray. It was like something, Cottrell. Yeah, oh, God. I'll never get it. The new Clive Custler.
Starting point is 00:08:14 But the, there's that other one like, till the room gives out, do my legs fall off, you know, that one? I love that one. Pray for his legs.
Starting point is 00:08:27 Yeah, some comics get freaked out before they're on stage. It's a full audience. Yeah. Yeah. The last one we did was a one off above the Legion.
Starting point is 00:08:35 We did a 200-seater above the Legion. Oh, nice. Yeah, we managed to sell it out. This is the Legion on Commercial Drive? The Legion, the Vancouver's best Legion. It was a very fun audience. You get to perform for Camilla and Charles. Oh, Camilla's up on the wall.
Starting point is 00:08:50 Wow, the Regent. They showed me the old queen. She's like collecting dust in the bag. Everyone's putting their cigarettes out on it. A hand-painted version of the queen. Do you know they're, they still send the letter to you if you turn 100. Fuck, I can't wait. That's awesome.
Starting point is 00:09:04 Yeah. I don't think Charles will be around for it, though. But might still be William. Yeah, shit. And they put a thumbprint on it or whatever to authenticate? Or it has, like, a hologram that lets you know. Yeah, they do spits in the elbow. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:09:22 You can do a swab. Because how do I know it's not just the king or queen's secretary putting it together? King Charles, if you got his DNA, it would just be one big chromosome. It's also not those really sausagey hands. He's probably not big on writing. Remember he's so mad that they gave him the wrong. pen? No. Oh, he was caught on Mike being like this fucking wrong
Starting point is 00:09:46 wrong pen. No, I was supposed to do with this fucking pen. And then I remember the next day they had to close up his hands and they look like gloves filled with the meat. Well, what are hands, if not gloves filled with me? No, but his really look like an assemblage of sausages. What is the, like, how old was this footage? Was this recent? Not that old
Starting point is 00:10:07 like a year. Yeah, like when he was when he was king. And he doesn't, he can't, They gave him a bick. I can't click this. I don't know. It was too thick or too thin for what he was doing. He was signing posters. He's doing a meet and greet.
Starting point is 00:10:25 Yeah. Keep shooting for the stars. Like, meeting and greeting is his main job. That is the big job of royalty. Have you, do you have any connection to the royalty? Are you from, do you have ancestors from the old country? You're Campbell. I'm a Campbell.
Starting point is 00:10:41 but yeah, no relation. My wife is a Campbell. Oh, yeah? Yeah. Let's kiss. From way back. I do find myself very attracted to every Campbell. It means rye mouth.
Starting point is 00:10:54 Rye mouth? Yeah, Campbell is like a crooked mouth man. Oh, rye, not like whiskey. No, like the wheat. Like W-R-Y? Yeah, like a crooked mouth. Oh. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:11:06 And I do kind of have a crooked smile, which is interesting. You do kind of. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah, when I, it's, it's clever. But if you ever, I've met several Scottish people who are like, God damn Campbells. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:11:16 And then tell me, like, how terrible they were. Is it the McDonald's and the Campbells? McDonald's hate me. And I don't even, I don't even know why. You won't even eat it at McDonald's. Oh, I love McDonald's. What's your, um, favorite thing at McDonald's? Cass got me into McDonald's.
Starting point is 00:11:31 I used to be like a, I came from Vancouver. I came from, I was born in Vancouver. Yeah. Very, uh, hippie parents. We would not eat a lot of McDonald's, but Cass, comes from out east. A fast food nation. Fast food nation.
Starting point is 00:11:44 She loves it. But anything, they always do cheap things. Mm-hmm. Like a $5. A thing of the day or... It's like a $5 meal. And I do that. No modifications.
Starting point is 00:11:54 They're not going to catch me with a modification. I'm like, whatever it is, it's usually like bad. Do you have the app? Yeah, I got the app and then I get deals. McDonald's. Do you get rewards points? You get a deal if the Canucks play that day. Oh, shit.
Starting point is 00:12:08 Oh, are there FIFA ones? I haven't been since FIFA started. My favorite, you know, the ads. You get cups. Yeah, there's cups. La Miel. Soccerball. Yamal, Lameen.
Starting point is 00:12:19 He puts his name. I don't know. Lameen Yamal. Could be. Harry Kane. Hey, Harry Kane, I know. And what's the other guy? How many guys do you know?
Starting point is 00:12:34 Well, Harry Kane. The rest, not by name. Mostly just by Alfonso. You know, Alphonse. Bonzo Davies. Bonzie. Oh, sure. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:12:42 It's Canada zone. How many of the Canadians do you know? There's a really skinny white guy and his name is McSompton. McDreamy? Yeah, there's McDreamy's on the team. There's Ron Swanson. Harry Potter. There's two guys whose last names are David.
Starting point is 00:13:01 Really? There's Jonathan David, who's named after a Bell and Sebastian song. And there's a, um, is his name Promise David? Yeah, promise is amazing. Promise David. Great kick. Yeah, one of the best kicks, which is really important. Yeah, yeah, you wouldn't think about it.
Starting point is 00:13:16 I think it's very important. One of the goals that Harry Kane scored, head, head into the net. Isn't that crazy? The coolest, the coolest score. That's about, I'd say half of the goals are scored that way. But he, like, he had to angle his head to get in. Did you play soccer growing up? I was really bad at soccer.
Starting point is 00:13:31 I was a goalie because I was a chubby kid, and I hated running. So you took up most of goals? They're like, he's about volume size as big as you can. The big green. Yeah. And, yeah, I hated it. Do you remember Charlie's joke about that? About what?
Starting point is 00:13:45 Growing up being a fat kid. You guys would be funny or goalie. Yeah, put him in that. Did you get to wear gloves? Yeah, I love gloves. But people are mean to the goalies. They step on you. They push you.
Starting point is 00:13:56 Sure. Yeah, they cleat you. It's tough. But I liked it. Anything but running. Yeah. Yeah. Running sucks.
Starting point is 00:14:03 Yeah. Sometimes you go, but like the goalie, sometimes, you know, you get a big puddle. Yeah. Yeah. You're always a big bottle. And sometimes the defense is so good. You're just standing around the whole game and you do nothing. But you get to wear a different colored shirt.
Starting point is 00:14:16 Yeah, that's pretty fun. It's true. My first time playing a game, I let in five goals in the first half, and then they pulled me. They didn't pull you up to four. They're like, we think he's going to turn this around. And then my parents also dropped the ball because, you know, parents supposed to bring orange slices.
Starting point is 00:14:33 I just remember they forgot the orange slices, and all the other parents were like, God damn, this family. My kids played a couple of years of soccer, hated it. And I got it. I understood. I didn't like it growing up, but I was forced to do it. I feel like it's a right of passage.
Starting point is 00:14:51 But the orange slices out. Like, people would bring all kinds of granola bars. Sushi. Yes. All the orange allergies. Yeah, that's true. Too much fiber. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:15:05 Granola bars, do they still? Do they still have a Gatorade or an orange drink or anything like that? Or just everybody brings their own bottle. Everyone, kids now have a water bottle for life. Like everywhere you show, you bring a water bottle. Mono scared everyone. Yep. Big mono.
Starting point is 00:15:24 Government of sharing. Mumps. Yeah. Because I feel like the only water bottle choice when I was a kid was the squeasy guy. The kind you had in your, like, as a bike. Yes. Yeah. fit in the little bike hole.
Starting point is 00:15:36 Squeasy guy, yeah. Aaron has a... He's got a squeasy powerade bottle that he's reusing. Pink powerade's great. What flavors pink? Strawberry lemonade. Nice.
Starting point is 00:15:49 I was just called it pink pow. It's so good. And your powerade over Gatorade? Yeah, big pow. You ever do like... What's the one they give to babies who are dehydrated? Electrolites? Pedialites?
Starting point is 00:16:05 Pedialite. I've had petalate before. And it was... Were you hungover? Yeah. And you know what? Works pretty well. I bought like...
Starting point is 00:16:13 They were like, uh, the electrolytes you get when you get, uh, sick in the Caribbean or whatever. Okay. They're like, yeah, super strength electrolytes and they taste terrible. But, uh, yeah, that's my drink of choice. What's your, uh, what's your hangover? Do you, I don't know, do you drink? Uh, yeah, I've been drinking a lot with FIFA. Um, what's your hangover, cure?
Starting point is 00:16:34 Do you have a hangover procedure? That's a great question. $5 McDonald's breakfast. There you go. Shame. No substitutions. I don't deserve it. I'm a piece of crap.
Starting point is 00:16:46 I don't deserve a large coffee. I don't take a medium. There was a while I was drinking a lot of, like maybe 15 years ago, light, purple, like see-through kind of purply Gatorade. Oh, yeah. I don't like it anymore. I can't find it anymore. You miss it.
Starting point is 00:17:02 Yeah. Yeah. I hate it when you get, like, locked in. to a flavor of something and then it just disappears and you're like, well, now, what do I, and then you get start over from zero.
Starting point is 00:17:12 I've always hated grape. Grape anything? Really? Yeah. Just great flavor. But what about real grapes? I love real grapes. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:17:18 I love wine. Great flavor. I don't like, I don't like fake apple, I think. Yeah. I don't, uh,
Starting point is 00:17:27 and I don't like anything that's sour apple. Yeah. It reminds me too much of high school when like, we would do like, sour apple shooters at the mark because they were always on special. Some disgusting
Starting point is 00:17:39 green slop. Aaron, you're from Vancouver. Yes. What part? Commercial drive. Whoa. So you really did come from the hippies. You grew up in the Legion.
Starting point is 00:17:49 Yeah, grew up in the Legion. Doing a show at the Legion, I was like, this is cool. Homecoming. This is cool. I told Cass, I said, we can get married here for about 800 bucks. She was like, oh, yeah.
Starting point is 00:17:58 Miss me with that. We have and I have this app and we can probably get this. petered by McDonald's for you just tag on to Tony and Tina's wedding. Honestly, it's like, just have 100
Starting point is 00:18:12 cheeseburgers delivered. Five dollars for Donald Trump. Five dollars ahead. Pretty good. You and I were talking about in Winnipeg, they do a thing called the social where you invite all your friends. And it's a big party
Starting point is 00:18:26 and they give you money and that's how you've fund your wedding day. And then nobody has to bring presents or whatever. Like, that's what you get. And I really, really was talking about, like it was really selling you on it, then Cass showed up and she hated the idea. This has been going on for a while.
Starting point is 00:18:41 I've been talking about this for a long time. Are you engaged? We're engaged. And I'm like, how are we going to pay for this? And my sell tickets to the wedding, that's what I ran by her. She hates that. She hated it. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:18:52 Meet and greet. Backstage. Be IP package. We'll do packages. There's a big wedding happening at Madison Square Garden, apparently, tomorrow. It's true. I'll go bark outside of that. You're going to bring in strangers on this street.
Starting point is 00:19:10 Travis, Kelsey, and his bride-to-be are apparently getting married tomorrow. Oh. And it's, I just love that it's a Madison Square Garden because it's like, you can get like nachos and pump cheese. Get a box seat? It reminds me of like when in wrestling they would do like some sort of ceremony in the ring. Yeah, yeah, yeah. to you, bam-bam Bigelow, take Luna Vashon.
Starting point is 00:19:39 They work together, they love together. So you guys have you figured out a date? Oh, God, no. I'm planning a tour across Canada. Oh, yeah, that's true. You should get married on tour. Get married in every city as it goes on. Exactly, yeah, that's what I was thinking.
Starting point is 00:19:52 Sell tickets, make some money. Yes. Then honeymoon. Did she have a dress? No dress. Oh, well, then. I got mine, though. What do you got?
Starting point is 00:19:59 We're set. I'm wearing a dress. Yeah? Yeah. What color? White? White is the Virgin Snow? Team Canada sponsored.
Starting point is 00:20:06 Harry Kane on the back. Wow. Going international. I would. Some guys sold sponsorship spots on his wedding, tucks. You really think about this as a money-making opportunity. It's just any opportunity to save a little bit of money. Well, there's your Scottish right there.
Starting point is 00:20:25 Cheap, best. Are Scottish? Yeah, I guess they're famously. Is it cheap? Skin't? Miserly. Miserly. Miserly.
Starting point is 00:20:32 So you grew up on commercial drive For people that aren't from Vancouver That's the real like Italian slash hippie Part of the city But the Italians are warring Never both Never both of the same thing
Starting point is 00:20:44 That's true It's little Italy and big hippie They have like Stores that sell exclusively hippie clothing What's the in the Venn diagram What overlaps? Honestly I'm right in the air pants
Starting point is 00:20:57 Aluminum free deodorant is definitely Apologies to our Well Italian You know who you are Yeah Did you Because you said like you didn't have any
Starting point is 00:21:15 McDonald's or anything Yeah Very hippie household I'm right in the middle of that Venn diagram My mom's Italian And my dad is a Dirty hippie They're like
Starting point is 00:21:25 Yeah They're like healthy people You know like Closed line We never had a microwave Really? We never had a closed dryer, no internet.
Starting point is 00:21:34 It was dial up. CBC radio. Old school TV. I know, I'm a big CBC guy. It's like you grew up in some kind of commune somewhere. I mean, I had all that, too, but I think it's just because I'm older. Yeah, we didn't have a microwave. It was behind of the time. My parents would not buy anyone a cell phone.
Starting point is 00:21:52 If you want a cell phone, that's on you. My dad just got a cell phone at 64 years old. And what's his plan? Like, what do you got? I think he took the home phone and just, like, transferred it to a cell phone. They were like, they let him do that. And he doesn't even bring it out of the house. I call him.
Starting point is 00:22:05 He's like, oh, so I left it at home. Oh, yeah. My mom's that way. Just leaves it at home. My mother-in-law is famous for having, you know, 4% battery and then walking out the house. This will be fine. Oh, my mom's figuring something. My mom's is always at 100% because it's constantly charging.
Starting point is 00:22:18 Never leaves the house. That's awesome. But commercial drive was the place where you'd watch FIFA. Yeah. That was the only place that Vancouver cared about FIFA. No, we used to call the World Cup. Now, everyone just calls it. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:22:33 Yeah. Yeah. I want to make sure that the sponsorship is, uh. Well, I think there's just such like a revered organization. They're the, what does FIFA stand for? The something international football association, but what does the first step stand for? I, uh, it might be French. It might be like like.
Starting point is 00:22:52 Oh. Oh. Okay. Yeah. That's probably, that's probably, that's probably, FIFA. Let's just give me that. Yeah. Give me that.
Starting point is 00:23:01 Give me a wiki. FIFA Wiki. Everyone hates FIFA. Yeah. I say they're corrupt. Federation Internacional de football association. Nice. Nice work.
Starting point is 00:23:12 Association football as opposed to gridiron football. It's so funny that, like, because Team USA was not, they didn't even qualify or they got knocked down right away, right? Here's still in. They're still in? Yeah. I have a story about this. So a few months ago when I still had a job, I was friends with all the. We'll touch on that later.
Starting point is 00:23:31 Go ahead. I was friends with the finance department. They were fun. They all entered the FIFA lottery. I won. Oh, wow. I have two tickets for USA, round of 16. So on Canada Day, I was actually cheering for USA against Bosnia because then my take would be a lot more expensive.
Starting point is 00:23:47 I was on Bosnia all the way. You're Bosnia all the way? I'm purely going to scalp this ticket. So this is a game here? It's a game in Seattle. Oh, okay. And I have a ticket for USA and I'm going to put a 100% tariff on it. I'm just going to get them
Starting point is 00:24:01 Are you going to sell or you're trying to sell? Trying to sell? What if you can't sell? Will you go? I'll burn it. Who is USA? Who are they playing? They're playing Belgium.
Starting point is 00:24:10 Oh, Belgium. Oh, my God. It's a classic rivalry of, you know, Freedom toast and Belgian Waffles. Freedom Prize. I was going to say Tintin versus Captain America. Tintin is there, Captain America. The Smurfs versus.
Starting point is 00:24:27 The minions. No, the minions are French. The Belgian Cinematic Universe. Yeah. You know, Asterix and Obelix, possibly.
Starting point is 00:24:38 Well, I guess they're French. I think they're French. Is Tintin French? Tintin's Belgian. I didn't know this. Yeah. He, uh, and... I mean, I could be wrong.
Starting point is 00:24:47 I didn't know this. I don't know much about Tintin. I know... Don't know much about... Tintin. Don't know much about the frickin' smarfs. So when you didn't have internet, did you go like nuts at the library? Yeah, we went nuts at the library.
Starting point is 00:25:07 Balls to the walls at the Britannia Library. Yeah. Now, you said you had a job. No longer job. Now the clownsling full-time gig. Jobless. And I have an podcast studio. Oh, nice.
Starting point is 00:25:19 And I, yeah, freelance film stuff. Oh, yeah? What do you do? We filmed comedy. The podcast studio is called This Thing On. and it's in the house somewhat like this. Okay. And it caters to local comedians.
Starting point is 00:25:32 You have more cameras than we do? Oh, way more cameras. You call this cameras. And is it? You can't see them. And actually, is your bladderful? Yeah, the bathroom you used earlier. That's how we promoted this show.
Starting point is 00:25:48 So my, guess who pissed the day of house this week? It's a dummy tank. It just flushes to a reservoir. and we send it to you on your 100th birthday. What, what, to plug your podcast, what is,
Starting point is 00:26:06 is this thing on? Oh, this thing on is, the studio production company and, um, we have a couple podcasts on the network. Very, very,
Starting point is 00:26:16 good plug. Loose term network. Um, have you as a comedian ever had to say is this thing on, on stage? because I have. It's hilarious. I've seen it.
Starting point is 00:26:29 I've never said it, but I've seen it and it kills. It's honestly, like you walk out, it's always a fucking wireless mic. Actually, true, yes, I have, yeah.
Starting point is 00:26:37 And then you have to, you know, you stand there for a second. It's very, very jarring off the top. Wireless mic is good because you can go into the crowd. That's true.
Starting point is 00:26:45 You can, yeah, work that audience. You can be on wires. You can do some wire work. You'll be on silks. Yeah, I feel like
Starting point is 00:26:56 that's what crowd work used to be. Was it like go out into the crowd and talking people's tables and stuff like that and now it's all on stage, lazy, lazy, lazy. When I started someone, the host was using a dead mic, dead wireless mic,
Starting point is 00:27:13 and then he's about to bring me up and then he handed me a dead wireless mic. He's like, good luck. Thank you so much. Why was he using it? I don't know. Everyone, you try to do comedy without any mic. It's weird.
Starting point is 00:27:23 It's really weird. So then I tried to do like a flip. I tried to flip it, dropped it, fell into the crowd. Like, watch this. Take this out of everybody. Oh, sorry, but your drink. Batteries everywhere. But if you're doing it with a dead mic, just like, get a hairbrush.
Starting point is 00:27:38 Sorry, you have a hairbrush? Like, what's the point? If we're going to pretend. It is weird to do stand up without a mic. Even a dead mic. Yeah, yeah. Just like with just the hands. That's all you got.
Starting point is 00:27:51 Have you had to do that? Like a headset? No, just like no. No mic. have that the rest of that said was archipel. It was like with hands only. You do start using your hands a lot
Starting point is 00:28:02 when you have two free hands. And then she said. I feel like that's very like the minister in church. Like they don't have a microphone. Yeah. They're like, you know. And God was like, hey, Job, you're in trouble.
Starting point is 00:28:16 And Job was like, I don't know about that. God was like, hey, check. Go check your house. Joe said, I don't know about that. Um, podium comedy. That's fun. What's that? Doing comedy from a podium. That's always. Oh, yeah, no, I, uh, I have done that before.
Starting point is 00:28:37 Yeah, it's a good time. It's, what have you had to do with the podium mic? Yeah, podium mics suck. And I didn't actually bring my own podium mic. I used, like, regular mics that were just not tall enough. So you're just hunching over a podium. Where was this gig? I, uh, facilitated a roast of me for my 30th birthday.
Starting point is 00:28:53 Oh, okay. Like a friar style roast of me with, like 13 comics in Vancouver. It was very fun. 13. Oh, sort of like the Last Supper. Yeah, exactly. Me in the middle. And Judas said, you're in trouble, Jesus. And Jesus said, I don't know about that. Did you, were there any roasts that secretly hurt?
Starting point is 00:29:13 No, I loved it. I loved all of it. When someone takes the time to, like, think about you, even if it's, like, true, it's still, I find it to be complimentary. Yeah. Yeah. That's a good way I look at it. It's the family I come from. It's, like, mean. Oh, really?
Starting point is 00:29:25 Yeah, I think they're a little mean. And, like, we laugh at tragedy and misery. That's all you get on the CBC. So, this tour you're going on. What type of, what are you talking? We're talking to legions? We're talking clubs. Coffee chops?
Starting point is 00:29:41 What are we talking? Yeah, it's been logistically so challenging. It's a lot of emails. We're playing a club in Winnipeg, like a real comedy club. Basement. Mm-hmm. Yeah. Colonna is kind of a weird one.
Starting point is 00:29:59 Verne's in Calgary, not a true comedy club, but... Oh, yeah, the one with all the symbols on the wall? Yeah, yeah, the dive bar. Symbols like drum symbols? Yeah, yeah, they're all cracked and fucked up. It's like a Jim Carrey movie. It was 13. It was all over the...
Starting point is 00:30:15 No, you have a number 23. 23, yes. 23. How did you know about that movie? who went a bad access. I watched that movie. Oh, so yeah, we loved the movie store. The, like the rental house.
Starting point is 00:30:30 The movie store and the rental house. No, the movie store, the rental house. Alpha video. You know, video hot. Yeah, commercial still has an ongoing. Not that one. Never went to that one. No.
Starting point is 00:30:43 I didn't support them at all. There was a second video store? Alpha video, which became Famosa pizza. Okay. Yeah. Yeah, you probably know. It's big. It was fine.
Starting point is 00:30:53 Why do I know it? I'm a big pizza guy? You know it. No, that was a place that everyone, they like, because Commercial Drive does not want, does not welcome chains. Chains. Yeah. And Formosa was a chain. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:31:05 And they're like from Banff or something. Yeah, they failed already. Did they? Yeah, it's another pizzeria, but it's just a lateral move. Should be go back to being a video store. Yeah. Sounds like they had a good run there. Well, there's a video store on Camby here.
Starting point is 00:31:19 Yeah. And that has been. like continuously open forever. Yeah. But like video stores haven't existed for so long. Like it's gone past the time
Starting point is 00:31:31 where it's like a joke. Like how what's this? I mean, I don't know what the joke would be. I don't know about that. I don't know about it. And God said ha. Laughed in my face. But yeah.
Starting point is 00:31:47 Tell me about this video store growing up. Yeah. We probably gave these guys like $20,000. Were you VHS or DVD? We saw the transition. Yeah, yeah. Okay. It was VHS exclusive and then I think we like waited to buy a DVD player.
Starting point is 00:32:04 And I think we bought the hybrid one, you know, the DVD VHS. And then we had, you know, pick of the litter, get rent anything you wanted. Well, I only asked because I was like, well, maybe if they're anti-microwave, they might be like, TVs. I don't know about this. Yeah, there's a, you know, special features are going to fry my kids a break. This is behind the scenes featurette. Yeah, it's, uh, uh, oh, like when I was a kid, I was there for the switch from beta to VHS.
Starting point is 00:32:36 Oh, hell, yeah. I'm your age and I wasn't. Yeah, I know you either were VHS or a BAT. Yeah, he's an alpha video. This guy. No, I never got out of beta. Stuck in the beta universe. Yeah, I feel like you were either VHS or a beta household.
Starting point is 00:32:50 And then eventually VHS just took over and became the format. I never saw beta at the store. Yeah. Well, you know, I think it was, I don't know what the last thing released on beta was, but the last one at my video store was men at work with Charlie Sheen and Emilio. Was it slightly better? Was it the Blu-ray to the DVD? Yeah, it was supposed to be like the superior of the two, but VHS just somehow they got it.
Starting point is 00:33:16 Can you tell when something is like now when things are like 4K? Me, Burzley? Yeah. No. I can't tell like. Like the fact that. I'll take people's word for it. Sure.
Starting point is 00:33:27 Yeah. Yeah. Like the Odyssey is going to be playing in 70mm. I'm not going to know the difference. You'll hear a little. Oh, yeah, that's true. And, uh, and you know, they're like, uh, if you got, you got to see in the theater because of the sound quality.
Starting point is 00:33:42 It's lost on me. You know, I don't know that the movie theater sounds good. Well, I got new contacts, and I'm not wearing them now, but when I went to the eye doctor, she did like three or four contact lens fittings with me. Like, try these. Okay, and come back in a week. Maybe she's got a crush on you. Well, she did. They were a heart shape.
Starting point is 00:34:02 She was staring into your eyes the whole time. And she was like, okay, come back next week and I'll give you another pair to try because they're like, they have every feature. Like, I have a stigmatism and they're. multifocal. Right. And so it was like, and then I just realized, oh, I think I just can't. I've always been okay at reading in low light and now I'm just not. And you can't fix that.
Starting point is 00:34:28 Um, you are you a lifetime glasses guy? Uh, great six. Great six. Uh, 12 years old. Contacts ever? Never. I can't do them. Too, too crazy.
Starting point is 00:34:36 Oh, it takes me 10 minutes to get one in and I'll cry the whole time. And I, yeah. And then my eyes get so dry. I think I have like chronically dry eyes. This is what your listeners like. This is stuff they come for. I wear them a lot in the summer because I don't like being sweaty with glasses on my face. Oh, interesting.
Starting point is 00:34:52 But I also, last few days I've been like, like sleepy at four in the afternoon, but I don't want to fall asleep with context in my eyes. Yeah, and also four in the afternoon, that's kind of the devil's nap time because, you know, you could be waking up at 7 p.m. The, I have glasses that I wear for, like, watching movies or, like, shows or whatever. whatever. Yeah. But I need them for other things, but I can't walk around with them. I feel like I'm drunk and I feel like I'm off kilter. So I just got them at the go.
Starting point is 00:35:24 Like if I'm like, what is that street sign or whatever that I can't like see from across the street or whatever? Right. Where did I see you in glasses recently? Nerd convention. Yeah, I was at the nerd convention. I was running a dog-tanker protected. Well, it's funny because I used to not. wear glasses and then I took a trip with you.
Starting point is 00:35:47 Like I had a prescription, but I never, it was very weak. And I was like, I don't really need these. And I took a trip with you. And you were seeing all the signs. I know. I used to have Hawkeye over here. And I was like, I don't know, maybe I do need to put my glasses on. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:36:00 And it's. NERNNNNNNESA reading in the dark. What a loser. But yeah, I think I'm going to have to get some other type of glasses that don't make me feel. Night vision. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:36:13 Yeah. Yeah. That would be badass. Have you seen the Snapchat glasses that they released? Like it's Snapchat's brand of, Oh, no way. You know, has cameras in it or whatever.
Starting point is 00:36:24 I hate that trend. This is so weird. Mm-hmm. The glasses, the cameras and glasses? That's going to be the thing, though. So weird.
Starting point is 00:36:31 You're going to be telling your grand kid that I grew up without glasses, glasses phone thing. Yeah. Kind of like eight eyes. It's like multi. Yeah, but I don't know. It's kind of like eight eyes.
Starting point is 00:36:42 Do you do like, minority report, do you move stuff around or do you tell it to do stuff? Or how does it work? And the commercials, it's like the weather and this thing and that thing. Hey, what's the weather? I don't know, look up, idiot.
Starting point is 00:36:58 What are you blind? My glasses are mean doing. Classes just keep saying, what are you blind? What are my eyes? But eventually we're going to have to all wear something. Like, phones are going to go away and then we're going to have to
Starting point is 00:37:14 have some kind of... We're not going to have to do anything. That's true. His dad's 64 just got his first cell phone. And it's a bad cell phone. What was your dad line of work that he was a... Phone of? Oh, just like a classic union job for the hospital.
Starting point is 00:37:31 And, yeah, he had your schedule in advance. And they would just call the home phone if they needed him really badly. Does he still call you on the phone? He started... I got him to text because I won't answer his phone calls. I'm trying to teach him. you have to text me I won't answer
Starting point is 00:37:45 I do like calling I just trying to teach him my dad texts me but he does it like like a letter yeah like Dave and then like
Starting point is 00:37:54 he'll end it with dad regards yeah yeah my mom does the voice to text so the texts are always very long
Starting point is 00:38:07 good good but no no smelling mistakes well sometimes some silly smell of mistakes but um but yeah like i i just worry like what's gonna i mean i'm already a choppedunk we're all chopped dumped here maybe not you maybe you're young enough to not be a young i'm the last millennial um do you have any nieces or nephews giving you the giving you the vocabulary i just married into being
Starting point is 00:38:29 an uncle well no we're not married yet but uh cass has like a niece and nephew and they're very cute they're like uh 13 and 14 like a like a 12 year girl and like a 13 year old boy and i overnight It became Uncle Darren. Oh, nice. Yeah. My name's not Darren. Nice, though. Yeah, it's nice that they're acknowledging you. They call me Chopin'unk.
Starting point is 00:38:53 How old are they? Yeah, 12 and 13, maybe. Okay, so they're in the slang. Oh, yeah. There's slang in it. Slangiverse. Do you have siblings? I'm in the middle of two.
Starting point is 00:39:04 There's three brothers. Three brothers. I'm in the middle of three boys. Yeah. And no nieces or nephew. who's yet on there, on your side? Yeah. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:39:18 It sounds like you're making up this brother thing. Definitely not. Definitely not. Quick, what are their names? My brothers? Yeah. Carrie and Neil, but Neil goes by Chichio. Cheecho?
Starting point is 00:39:28 Yeah. Well, Chichio. He hates Neil. I think everyone hates the name Neil. Well, yeah. Not Mr. Armstrong. He loves it. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:39:37 Well, he's the cool one. And Neil Young, who's less cool, but pretty cool. Neil Diamond's pretty cool. Cool. Neil Diamond. And the act of kneeling is pretty cool. And it's super cool. But you know what?
Starting point is 00:39:47 If you're not going to be Neil, Cheecho is probably the obvious alternative. It is. 100%. Um, what's going on with you, Cheecho? Oh, well, fingers are smelly.
Starting point is 00:40:00 Yeah. But in a good way. I had this cup of coffee. It was terrible. It was drinking perfume the whole time. We're recording this on day seven since my air conditioner broke. Oh, yeah. It's been a sweaty couple days. But it hasn't been, the weather's
Starting point is 00:40:15 been cool, and we just have windows open, but we haven't done a podcast yet, and now it's, oh, I'm getting real hot down here. Yeah, drinking a coffee, too. Yeah, that was a fatal flaw. How are you temperature-wise? Cool as a choppedunk. Hey. Cool as one chopped up.
Starting point is 00:40:31 So I'm going to email, or I'm going to text my repairman guy and see if the part is back in. Okay. But don't worry about that. You got his number? No, I guess I have to email them. Never mind. But, so I'm suffering, but, you know, we'll make it through. Do you know what's just thinking?
Starting point is 00:40:49 Chopped is a bad, but shredded is good. Shredded? Yeah. That means you're like super mussela. Yeah. So chopped salad or shredded salad. Yeah. What are the other settings on your cuisine, art?
Starting point is 00:41:03 Cut? Like you think cuts are really? Yeah. Julian. You could be Julianned. You could be liquefied or fripide. FRAP Ate. Oh, yeah.
Starting point is 00:41:12 He's been working out. You can tell he's fratpaid under that shirt. Well, this guy's completely polarized. Crush. Yeah. Crushed is good. Crushed ice. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:41:22 Well, you don't want to be crushed. You want to, you know, you want to have crushed something. Yeah. Or have a crush. I want to have a crush. Sure. I wonder if there's any new lingo in that field having a crush. Oh, yeah, there is.
Starting point is 00:41:36 Yeah. We don't know. Yeah, I have a sweet. I'm sweet on you. Yeah. You're my cherry blossom Yeah, you're my Cheecho You're the Cheech to my show
Starting point is 00:41:47 Yeah What's going on with me is This past A couple days ago I went to a baseball game Baseball fan Yeah It's more and more
Starting point is 00:42:02 It sounds like you're making things up That's why do you guys Like me Oh yeah We do I went to one J's game. It was fun. Nice.
Starting point is 00:42:12 Yeah. And then all the Canadians come down and then you get to see the Seattle people get pretty mad. Oh, you saw it down there. Yeah, but they also put a tariff on it. They jack up the prices for Canadians.
Starting point is 00:42:22 Really? Yeah, it's like double. Jesus. So even the Seattle people who are there, they're mad that they pay double just because a bunch of Canadians showed up. Wait, do the Seattle people also have to pay double?
Starting point is 00:42:32 Yeah, they all have to pay double. Oh, boy. Yeah. This is that surge price I've been hearing about. Jesus. So you went to our local baseball. Went to our local baseball squadron in the Vancouver Canadians. They were playing against the dastardly Eugene Emerald.
Starting point is 00:42:47 Oh, I hate them so much. And I didn't realize that I was going on a Tuesday. Okay. Which is 75 cent hot dog day. Yeah, that's big. Giving Costco run for the money. Yeah, 70. So, and these are standard dogs?
Starting point is 00:43:05 These are standard dogs. How are the buns on these things? buns are soft as an angel's butt. And are we talking, are these on the grill? These are on the... No, these are in a... Steamed. These are...
Starting point is 00:43:20 I don't know where they're generally coming from. So there was like... You get into the stadium and it's immediately chaos because the line to get hot dogs is going past where they have the, like, stanchions. Yeah, yeah, yeah. And so people are like curving around. You have to cut through the line to get where you're going. And it's stressed out teen at the end. And it was like, I'm up to my eyeballs.
Starting point is 00:43:51 And it wasn't going fast because you get to the front of the line and you're like, yeah, I'll take eight hot dogs. Yeah. And they'll hand you eight hot dogs really fast. But while you're, you've been waiting in line so long, you're like, well, I'll also get a few beers. Yeah, sure. And so the line isn't going fast at all. And I, so I didn't get a hot dog immediately. Okay.
Starting point is 00:44:13 I was like, I'll, I'll wait until the line dies down. Now, were the rest of the family is also getting, uh, were they all getting dogs? I didn't go with my family. You went by yourself? I went with my friend. And did you guys both get hot dogs? No, my friend is a vegan. Okay.
Starting point is 00:44:27 So then no hot dogs. You're the sole hot dog provider. Yeah. Uh, and so I went, I, like, honestly, the line was so long that I was like, you're going to be, in line for three innings to get a hot dog. And so I was like, oh, well, there's like a lesser area. I saw that they were sort of like moving hot dogs to every, um, concession stand.
Starting point is 00:44:51 Right. So like places that don't normally sell hot dogs. Like they had a little sort of like heat bag full of hot dogs. Even like customer info has. Yeah. But they were constantly running out and, you know, the shorter lines, people would just give up because they ran out a hot dog. They must have really.
Starting point is 00:45:07 miscalculated how many hot dogs people would want on 75% And then I was like Because someone had told me Oh he just They bring them around Like there's Yeah there's that kind of guy Yeah
Starting point is 00:45:21 I saw one of those guys The whole stadium And he was just being Swarmed Swarmed and so I joined that swarm And he was like 12 years old Throw a handful of change
Starting point is 00:45:34 I want my dog And I That's the thing, too, is everybody's got to make change. Nobody's given exact change. Everybody's giving a looting. It's tap. Oh, it's all tap now. Sure.
Starting point is 00:45:45 And so, you know, you had to do a little soft shoot. But, so I found this kid. Yeah. And he has a sign saying, like, maximum four hot dogs. Maximum 18 inches of dogs. The people in front of me were like, well, what if we were like a party of four people, could we get 16 dogs? Yeah, yeah, you can do that. And the kid in front of me was like, well, last time you told me, I could only get.
Starting point is 00:46:15 Anyway, so I was like, it was like absolute bedlam. Yeah, and I got to the front of the line. I was like, I'll get two hot dogs. And then I ate them so fast. And I was like, fuck, I should have gotten four hot dogs. Should have pushed it to the limit. And so we sat, we watched the game. And.
Starting point is 00:46:32 Thinking about hot dogs the whole time. Kind of. Well, people are carrying, like. like people are standing in line with, you know, like, just like an empty box because they're going to fill it with hot dogs. Yeah. And so you see people walking by,
Starting point is 00:46:45 people dropping hot dogs and just leaving them. It's fine. I could just, I just imagine the cleanup from that many hot dogs. Just a muster as far as the, I could see. Lots of sloppy dogs. Toilets clogged.
Starting point is 00:47:03 Um, but the, uh, yeah. And so about, uh, Speaking of dogs. I know,
Starting point is 00:47:08 mine are going crazy up there. So, and we did not do well. We were, we were down five. Who cares? It's hot dog night. You know,
Starting point is 00:47:17 everybody wins. But do you remember we had to, we talked about there's this, some pork. There's this guy on the, Vancouver Canadians named Peyton Williams, I want to say. Okay.
Starting point is 00:47:28 And his nickname. Do you remember his nickname? We had a guest in the last few weeks. Oh, is it, is it ketchup or something? Was it, who was it?
Starting point is 00:47:37 A couple years ago there was a guy named Caleb Catchup on the team But now His name is There was also a guy on the team named Dub Glead Yeah He's gone now Oh what happened?
Starting point is 00:47:49 I think it's a good thing I think he gets called up But we have this guy now Who is enormous He's like standing with all the other players He plays first base Peyton Williams He's standing with all of them
Starting point is 00:48:00 And he's like a head taller than all of them Oh And big Like just a big a bruiser Big in every way Okay And he is, his nickname is the Iowa meat truck. Jesus Christ.
Starting point is 00:48:12 That's a great nickname. He bats third in the lineup. He's a, you know, a power hitter. He hits for, I bet he has a good slugging percentage. Sure. Of his box score through the room. And this guy is an American traded to this Canadian team. But you think he's destined for better things?
Starting point is 00:48:33 Because he's a mammoth. They all are. No one on the team is like sent down on their way down. It's got to be a guy. There is. Well, like, they don't, like, we're at such a low league. Yeah. They'll send you down from the majors to AAA, but they won't send you to single A.
Starting point is 00:48:50 They want to put you down to a high school team. Yeah. If you have a bad game, you have to sell the hot dogs. Oh, yeah, yeah, a lot of, a big guy could sell a lot of hot dogs. Well, look what they did for him. Like those old milk commercials. Yeah, eat your hot dog. You want to be big and strong.
Starting point is 00:49:07 So we're down 5-0-0 in the 6th inning. We score a run, but still we're down 5-1. And then in the last two innings, we make a little rally. And who hits the winning RBI? It's got to be the Iowa Meat Train. It's Mr. Meat Train. The crowd goes wild. Did they have?
Starting point is 00:49:28 Hot dogs in the sky. Round about the seventh inning, I found that kid again. He finally stopped being swarmed after seven innings. and started making the rounds. And I was like, two more hot dogs. Yeah. Maximum of the floor. And you gave them to me and they were ice cold.
Starting point is 00:49:42 Yeah, I would imagine. This, do they have, like, something on the screen for the Iowa meat truck? Like, do they have a logo or something? They really need, like, a song. Yeah. Yeah. Or just the sound effect. Whenever you get.
Starting point is 00:49:58 Ooh. Araw. This is something for all three words. I, years and years ago at, was it here or was it in Calgary where Jose Canseco came and played a game? I think maybe it was in Calgary. Yes, Jose Canseco?
Starting point is 00:50:15 Oh, he was like double the size of every other player. He's tall and extremely wide. I think he was maybe did one steroid once. Yeah, he did one steroid once. He liked it. Never went back. But he like, yeah, came for a day and played a game. Don't think he hit anything.
Starting point is 00:50:34 Well, maybe hit something, but it was just like, look at this giant man out on the world. Yeah, and he was signing, did he sign things? Yeah, you know, your chest if you wanted. Oh, sure. I do have fickle titty. Yeah, that's true. Guys, I'm so sweaty now. And those titties are not helping.
Starting point is 00:50:54 I mean. Um, wuga. Have you been any baseball yet? No, I haven't been to any baseball this season. We'll try to make it for dog days, which is where everybody brings their dog. Not to be confused with, 75 cent hot dog night. Which is every Tuesday. Every Tuesday?
Starting point is 00:51:14 That's crazy. You're going to run McDonald's right out of business. Don't even joke about that. Do you like hot dogs? I love hot dogs. Yeah. I love hot dogs. What's your, what do you put on it?
Starting point is 00:51:26 What's your condiment? Oh, I don't like ketchup. Never like ketchup. Never like ketchup. Never once. Love tomatoes. Hey, ketchup. It's a war within.
Starting point is 00:51:34 me like grapes. I hate grape candy flavor. Loves the tomato, hates a ketchup. Hates a ketchup. Yeah, honestly, most of the banana peppers. Oh, yeah? Those are good. So maybe caramelized onions.
Starting point is 00:51:47 Okay. I'm a fancy dog guy. Are you doing any wet stuff? I don't want the wet stuff. You know, no mustard? No, not really. You're just putting topping straight on and raw dunking it as it were? What is sticking them to?
Starting point is 00:51:58 Like, you need the ketchup of mustard to adhere them. They're sort of like a little red glue. I use gravity. It's just like reloaded and then just bun on the bottom holding it all. And then you have to eat it horizontally. Yeah, with an unhinged jaw. That's why I like my dog. I was so at Hot Dog Day.
Starting point is 00:52:16 I heard that there would be a guy. I assumed a guy would be roaming around giving away hot dog selling odd dog. So I had picked, like I was wearing a hoodie and I had gone to the concession and just grabbed a bunch of ketchup of mustard packets. So that when the dogs came to me, I would be able to do it. You had like an ammo vest. Yeah, it was like Chewbacca. And, but I didn't get any napkins. But you know what?
Starting point is 00:52:43 A little 75 cent dog, you can eat that in two bites. Yeah. Yeah. Not going to get it all over these luscious lips. I don't think I've ever met somebody who doesn't do any of the wet condiments. Oh, yeah, I'm a freak. I'm a freaking freak. I love novelty food.
Starting point is 00:52:59 What do you, what do you think about Subway having hot dogs? Because that's, to me, that's banana pepper central. Yeah, I'm a nightmare at subway. Subdog? So much vegetables. Subdog? I saw a picture of it. It looks disgusting.
Starting point is 00:53:10 It looks disgusting. Because they put so many topics on it. And Subway seemingly has a problem photographing their own food to make it look good. But also you go there and you're like, well, I see why. Yeah, yeah, yeah. It is an accurate depiction. Now, I did see this in Vancouver's Daily Hive.
Starting point is 00:53:27 They went to the Subway kitchen. I visited Subway's test kitchen. They have a desk? I guess so. And they failed. And here's... The headline says, Taste the subdog,
Starting point is 00:53:40 and it's just as delicious as it looks. And here's what it looks like. It's a foot long. This. Oh, God. Yeah, why? They put it on Italian herb and cheese. And it's so covered in toppings,
Starting point is 00:53:54 you can't see the hot dog. Yeah. And probably for the best, because the one on the poster at the subway I went past. Hot dog looks like one of those wrinkly dudes that you get at a 7-11. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:54:05 Well, the ones with a real snap on them. Yeah, I'm going to actually, we're going to have to pull up the actual sub-dog from Subway to see what it really looks like. Thanks anyway, lying news media. Oh, yeah, it kind of looks just like a, that does look better. A foot-long hot dog, it basically looks like a sub once you put the dog on. It's really hard to screw up a hot dog. And yet, if anybody's going to do it.
Starting point is 00:54:30 It's going to be Subway. It's going to be Subway. there's one without a background there. You could Photoshop that into any way you want. And it's on a plate, like a baseball home plate. Yeah. Nice. Nice.
Starting point is 00:54:44 So they got it. They know what it's like. That's an excessive amount of wet. That is a lot of wet on a dog. Oh, you can order it now. This is, it's taken me to their website.
Starting point is 00:54:55 Wow. All right. Just cruising around subway.com. Let's go to dotCA and see what. Okay. It actually is not private. It's been gone from my... It's just a subway camera.
Starting point is 00:55:05 Never mind. So anyway, I'll be checking out the subdog any time, any day now. Yeah. What's going on with you? Well, last weekend or maybe the weekend before, yeah, the weekend before, there was this gigantic, multi-house, multi-yard garage sale that happened in the Grandview area. like 100 garage sales that were like just like rows of houses and then just dotted all like the map looked insane when you looked on the map it just they gave you a map well yeah yeah it's pull it up the map it's got a great grand view barrage show it doesn't have a private connection oh sure um yeah it's uh you like the google map of it yeah well though they sent out like a map like here's here's where our
Starting point is 00:56:00 where they all are. And it was insane. You couldn't, even if you got there at 9 a.m. and worked all the way to 4.5 p.m., you wouldn't hit them all. They're freaking everywhere. But you went.
Starting point is 00:56:14 I went. I tried to do, I did as much damage as I possibly could. Like, what do you mean? Try to hit as many sales as I could. And by doing damage, you mean just like browse?
Starting point is 00:56:26 Yeah, yeah, yeah. Yeah, yeah. Brows is right. A lot, I would say, 90% of the stuff was women's stuff.
Starting point is 00:56:33 Lots of women's clothes. Oh, who needs it? Yeah, jewelry. You wanted power tools. Yeah, I wanted power tools. Or grease, just a bucket of grease. Yeah. Grease on DVD.
Starting point is 00:56:44 Grease or Brute Cologne. Oh, sure. Drek, R noir. Yeah, yeah. Guy stuff, you understand. Oh, my God. Bacon. Sure, yeah.
Starting point is 00:56:55 And while I was going through all these places, I came across our guest today. Aaron Campbell had, he had a garage sale, he was operating all on his own. It looked pretty good, eh? You had some of the best stuff of all the garage sales. Were you men stuff? Do you live in that area? That's my parents' house.
Starting point is 00:57:12 Okay. Yeah. And I was like, can I get in and use your internet? And he was like, bad news. Not private. Can I warm up these leftovers? Uh-uh. Can your dad escort me and make sure you can call 911?
Starting point is 00:57:26 Uh-uh. Nope. The phone stays here. Phone stays plugged in. But yeah, you had a range of things. Yeah. And it was. Yours was kind of the coolest of all the ones I had.
Starting point is 00:57:38 You had. Beekeeping stuff. Yeah, beekeeping stuff. This guy used to be a beekeeper. Like Jason Statham in that movie. Exactly. That was about me. That's my biopic.
Starting point is 00:57:49 Transporting stuff. Keep a bees. B is. Bophilic biopic. You tell it. What's the word for beekeeping? Apiary. Apiarist.
Starting point is 00:58:00 Ape. Got a pretty stank on it. Yeah. Did you, how long did you do this for? This was at your parents' house in the backyard or? I can give you the full, give you the full rundown. It came upon me by accident.
Starting point is 00:58:13 These bees were thrust upon me. These bees were eating a giant pot of honey. And then swarmed. And I was like, I'm their leader now. I used to be a gardener and I was working at the P&E. I was a Red Seal Gardener. And bees when they... What is Red Seal mean?
Starting point is 00:58:28 Yeah. It's like, you know, like Mario left. level plumbing. You're like the best. Oh. Yeah. You're like a Red Seal chef. Yeah, like a Red Seal.
Starting point is 00:58:35 You really are a Red Seal garden? You can do that for gardening, yeah. Wow. I go anywhere in Canada and pull weeds. Anywhere in this great country. And the rest of Canada, it's mostly snow. Gardening is snow. For the rest of the rest of it.
Starting point is 00:58:51 Yeah, I hated that part. But when a hive does really well, they'll split. They'll actually like make a new queen. And then they'll swarm somewhere else. also at one of my gardens, the Italian garden at the P&E, there was like a swarm of bees on a, on a plum tree because it was like nice running water. And they seemed like it would be a nice place for them to set up, but it wouldn't. And when the Italian garden bees were they like, a buzz.
Starting point is 00:59:15 Yeah, they're Italian bees. A buzz buzz, buzz. Yeah. So I just like didn't tell anyone and I just like rented, I think a truck from Motto. Okay. I came back under the cover of night. And I, like, wait.
Starting point is 00:59:34 I, like, bought a bee suit randomly from someone in, like, Surrey, and then bought a hive, and I was like, I'm going to heist these bees. So you went and you stole these bees? I stole these bees. Wow. Yeah. How did you know where the queen was? I just assumed it was in the swarm.
Starting point is 00:59:49 That's what Google was telling me. There was, like, a swarm of bees, and it was, how long ago was this? This was, got to have been 23 or four? Okay. A couple years ago. Yeah. So, yeah, I got all the stuff. I got, like, an old hive and, like, an old suit.
Starting point is 01:00:04 And I smoked them a little. And I, like, climbed. You gotta smoke the bees. It's delicious. Smoked them up. And then I climbed a ladder in the truck. And they, like, got them into a hive. And then they, like, drove them home.
Starting point is 01:00:15 And I, like, brought home a swarm of bees. And they didn't go crazy on you or anything. They didn't go crazy. They're very nice. And they trusted me as they knew I was half Italian. They were like, it's a good one. This is what we grew up in an Italian garden. Yeah.
Starting point is 01:00:29 And, uh, and, uh, Yeah, and then we tried to, like, expand the hive and really tried to, like, they didn't, it was not successful. I think I might have lost the queen in transport. And they were just kind of like milling around. Yeah, yeah, what are you supposed to do? It was a bunch of in Zelby. It's just like drones without a queen.
Starting point is 01:00:50 They were kind of pissed off. What, um, why did you want to do this? Oh, I'm just super impulsive. And I like the idea of it. It seemed really cool to me. That does seem cool. Yeah. Like, would you want, were they honeybees?
Starting point is 01:01:02 They're honeybees. Okay. Yeah, I love swarms. That's really a thing. I love swarms. Oh, you should have gone to the baseball game. I love swarms of everything. I've had a worm farm before.
Starting point is 01:01:13 That's a good swarm. Really? Yeah. You can, like... How did that start? Take a bath... Well, gardener... Take a bath...
Starting point is 01:01:18 Take a bath... I did have a bath... I had a bathtub in the backyard, and then you, like, you make a house for them. And then they multiply. And before you know, you have millions of worms. What are you doing with these worms? You feed the worms, your compost, and then they can... they make a...
Starting point is 01:01:30 Well, if you really want to multiply, just chop them in half. You don't want the bottom half. So, would you sell them to fishermen? That is one avenue to pay for this damn wedding. You use their worm casings.
Starting point is 01:01:47 The worm casings is the best thing for plants. Oh, okay. What are casings? Like, the skin that they lose? Shit, but... Oh. Sorry, worm crap.
Starting point is 01:01:55 Yeah. Cut that out. Cut that out. It's kind of gross because it's like A worm is that. Yeah. And then it just... So for the listener, he's making a worm shape with his hand.
Starting point is 01:02:04 Yeah, making a worm impression. And I think the worm has to eat to, like, move. So, like, as it eats, it just leaves behind a casing of itself. Like, hackman. Yeah. It's leaving behind... Huh. Just, it's body weight in crap.
Starting point is 01:02:17 And so, like, as a Red Seal Gardner, the worm dirt is number one? Primo. Tops. You mix that in with your soil. It's just full of, like, micro-nutrients. Okay. micro organisms and you can make tea out of it. You can make worm crap tea.
Starting point is 01:02:31 I doubt it. It's, plants go crazy. You put like molasses and some worm casing in a fucking. I thought you were talking about like a human drink. Yeah. It's like, plants go crazy for this tea.
Starting point is 01:02:43 Okay. They love it. Do you take sugar with your worm tea? You take molasses with your worm tea. Sure. And then you aerate it and then it becomes like microbally rich. It's like kombucha for plants. Oh, wow.
Starting point is 01:02:54 Give them a little scoop and then they just explode. Cool. What is this? What's kombucha do for people? You should try. Go counteract those dogs you've been eating. Yeah, I'll have six hot dogs, one kombucha. One big kombucha.
Starting point is 01:03:08 Bounce out. They're doing $75 dollars a night. So your total comes to $75? $75. No tax on them either. No tip. Right? Just $75?
Starting point is 01:03:22 To, honestly, two, the hot dogs was $1.49. That's crazy. They give you the penny back. They're honest. So, yeah, you came across. You had beehives? Beehives. You had some cool-ass sound equipment?
Starting point is 01:03:35 Yes. Like, were you a DJ at some point? Oh, I'm a hoarder. Okay. You just collect do these things. Yeah. I will hoard anything that I know is worth $40 on market points. I want to go back to the beehives.
Starting point is 01:03:49 So you lost the queen, you think. And the queen might have been lost in transit or she might have the rest of the bees for. So then I got. A lot of people involved in the beekeeping friend brought a cell, like a honeycomb cell, that had, like, a queen emerging. So she had, like, a, what's called a virgin queen or something. They have to be. And they, apparently all the in-cell bees want to kill her immediately because they don't trust her.
Starting point is 01:04:19 But if you take long enough for the queen to emerge, they, like, get used to her assent. And they're like, oh, yeah, you can. You're cool. You can hang. You can lead this whole. You're kind of like not a fake gamer girl. Yeah, you guys, you're kind of like the rest of us, though. Yeah, you're pretty cool.
Starting point is 01:04:35 Yeah. And then the bees got a lot chiller. When they were just bros, they were pissed off. They didn't know, like when I came near it. And then they got a queen, and then they had purpose, and it was nice. And then how long did that? That lasted. They, like, kind of overwintered poorly.
Starting point is 01:04:50 It's really hard. They weren't a strong enough colony to really survive the winter, but I was trying to give them, like, honey water. It was a disaster. Yeah. We overwintered poorly. Our bad. You give them tiny little jackets.
Starting point is 01:05:07 Well, they're fuzzy already. They're fuzzy. Vancouver's so wet. And it's full of mites apparently. Did you extract? Did you get any honey? So, yeah, you won't get honey for a while. Oh, okay.
Starting point is 01:05:18 They need, like, enough honey to survive the winter and then, like, another stack. That's when you, it's when you see, like, a tall beehive. Yeah. It means they're doing great. Oh, okay. means they filled one and then you need to add another and then they start filling and these guys just love working. There's a lady on
Starting point is 01:05:31 Instagram, maybe TikTok, she probably cross posts. Yeah. Whose whole thing is she goes places and like, like someone will call her and be like, uh, my wall, my living room wall is buzzing. Yeah. And then this lady comes by and that's it. That's a swarm.
Starting point is 01:05:48 Oh. They've like moved and they found home in someone's house and then a beekeeper will have to. Does she ever open up and be like, it's just a bunch of vibrators back there for me? TSA's pissed You're pranking me I go to TSA with my bees What's in here?
Starting point is 01:06:05 We're going to have to count all these bees Um Yeah, it's, uh, did anybody buy them? Uh, yes, some lady from the island bought some cells And then, uh, some other local person was interested in it But not interested enough to take on this. Yeah, have you ever seen the movie, The Cell? The Cell, no, I have with J-Lo.
Starting point is 01:06:24 You should check that out. It's really spooky. It's really weird. And that guy, like, kind of never did anything else. Like, I think he just did that one crazy. It's crazy. Yeah? Yeah.
Starting point is 01:06:34 Like, if you can try it. It's a kind of like... Go to alpha video and see if they've got it up. She has to, like, enter, like, a killer's mind or something. Yeah. And the killer is Vincent Donofrio. Yeah. And it's a lot of, like, uh, hell kind of imagery.
Starting point is 01:06:48 Yeah. Hell. It's hell in the cell. Yeah. And it's, uh, um... Did you buy anything at this thing? I bought, I didn't buy from you. I gave, yeah, he refused any of my man materials.
Starting point is 01:07:01 Yeah, okay. Not for me. My worm case. Yeah, he didn't want to be sued. I gave him a phone call when he first got there. Yeah, you threw me on your phone. Yeah, I was very stressed out. I was getting swarmed.
Starting point is 01:07:14 And then Cass called me and I was like, Graham, you have to take this. I was like, hello, and she was like, a long pause, like, what's going on? I was like, this is Graham Clark. Your fiancé just handed me his phone. I was up to my neck. Was it like full of buyers? Tons of buyers.
Starting point is 01:07:32 But I was letting everything go for cheap, cheap, cheap. But like, just like it was a people's day out. Yeah. Like, and there were, yeah, some sales you couldn't even get close to the stuff because there were so many people there. Not mine. You get it. But like, I bought, what I bought?
Starting point is 01:07:48 Just a very little, little things, a little, a wind-up gardener. Field toy where he plays the guitar. That's the buzzing in your walls. Yeah, I bought some, a package of, remember when you're kids, I don't know if people still do this where they'll make like a little candy bag on Halloween and put out like bags of candy, a little like paper bags. So I bought some of those from like, I think, the 60s. Oh.
Starting point is 01:08:14 That guy had the coolest table. He had all this kind of like retro stuff. But that was the old, I was like, if I buy anything that needs. to take up any space. I got to really decide. And these are all just people who live there. It's not like no one was, you know, setting up a table. Some people set up at the park.
Starting point is 01:08:30 Yeah, went through the park and it was, uh, that's where the cool table was. Yeah. Um, I'm trying to remember what else I got. I got those bags, got that Garfield. Something else. I got something else. Do you haggle? Yeah.
Starting point is 01:08:42 You get a haggler? Yeah. I love haggling. I mean, I always go in with a number that I'm willing to go to, but I try to get lower than Do you ever walk away? I have walked away. Um, there was a pair of, uh, sunglasses, ray band, and I said how much?
Starting point is 01:08:56 In my head, I was like 20. She was like 50. I was like, sell them online. This isn't, nobody's carrying out 50 bucks to a garage sale. I sold stuff for so cheap and I should have. How much were your sound? Oh, I don't know. I just let people, I had asked people to name a price and some people are so bad at haggling.
Starting point is 01:09:13 It's like you shot them in the face. I've never thought of a number in my life. Just give me a number. You won't insult me. I think you have a theoretical number. They can't do it. It's crazy. Most things are five bucks or one buck.
Starting point is 01:09:31 That was one or five. There was, but like the one thing that was the prize possession, I didn't buy it because it was too big and I'd have nowhere to put it. It was a giant A&W promotional kind of like duvet cover. Awesome. And it was from the woman that was selling. it worked at an advertising agency. So these were given out to people who worked on the campaigns. You can buy this anywhere.
Starting point is 01:09:57 And it had like the whole burger family was on it. You got your uncle burger. Yeah, you got your teen burger, the mama burger, the baby burger, the Papa burger. They're all there. And the chubby chicken. And then you've got the root bear himself. He's on it. And Graham, I've been wondering this for years.
Starting point is 01:10:13 I was going to ask because I was like. Because I was actually really thinking it was maybe what this might be. Because I was, I was, I was, I was, I was, I was, I was, I was, wanted to ask the lady, but I was like, I remember Dave had mentioned, what does this A&W stand for? Ha, blah, va, va, va, va. And freaking W. A and freaking, I don't know.
Starting point is 01:10:37 That's not true. You know. I believe. Yeah. It's ambogism and whooped. That is correct. It's ambigism and whooped. It's just not getting funnier.
Starting point is 01:10:47 Disagre. Maybe you had a big blanket behind you. Oh, yeah. Did you buy the big blanket? I didn't buy the big blanket because I, Like, I literally had nowhere to put it. And it was also like a polyester. And I was like, I don't want to sleep under a polyester.
Starting point is 01:11:02 You would sleep under this. Well, and they also said it could. That's what it wasn't. It was never in a million years. Yeah, I'd buy it, but I would never sleep under it. Well, and she ran down the list of things that it could be. It could be a, you know, picnic blanket. Or alternative uses.
Starting point is 01:11:20 I love alternative uses. And, yeah, no, I didn't buy it because I honestly. it would just be in the closet and then it would be find it again whenever I move somewhere. Or die. Or die. Oh, I would want to be buried in it.
Starting point is 01:11:34 Zit me right in there. In your A&W uniform too. But yeah, that was the prize find and I've got my picture taken next to it. The blanket's 40 bucks
Starting point is 01:11:47 but five bucks to just have your picture taken with it. Yeah, it's a meat and greet. How much for six pictures? I don't know. Name a number. I don't know many. I already said six. Yeah, six, six. Do you guys want to move on to some overheard?
Starting point is 01:12:03 I have one more thing about that garage sale. Tell you. Yes. I accidentally sold when it cast his prize possessions. That feels so bad. They shouldn't leave you in charge of this lady stuff off. Lady stuff you got to watch closely. What was it?
Starting point is 01:12:23 going on a tear. I was like, my motivation was getting rid of stuff. And so you were selling stuff from your parents' place or your own thing? My stuff, my storage unit, Cass's stuff, some of my, whatever my parents threw in that they didn't want anymore. But mostly, like, I have so much crap. And it was a
Starting point is 01:12:39 purse, a designer purse. No shit. That her mom gave her for her Sweet 16. Oh, God. And her mother-law was staying with us that night. And I was like, yeah, I sold that purse. I'm like, so happy. They're like, what purse? I'm like, the blue one. They're like, Oh, my God.
Starting point is 01:12:54 Why did you have it? Why did I swear I asked. I swear I was like, you don't want this. You never use it. It was like stained and scratched. And then she was, I don't know. I apparently don't listen. But I was like, yeah, it's getting sold.
Starting point is 01:13:06 You're going to need some clownsilling. Yeah, I definitely. It was the first thing that sold to. Oh, no. Before I even opened, like a dad and a kid rolled up. How much did you let it go for? That's what her mom was at, how much? And I was like, a cute kid bought it.
Starting point is 01:13:19 They're like, how much? $5. $5. Price possession. Five dollars. It was a really cute, like, a 13-year-old boy with his dad, and I was like, name of price, and he couldn't think of a number. I was like, is it for your girlfriend? He's like, it's for my mom.
Starting point is 01:13:38 And I was like, well, that's cute. That is cute. $5? My mom's 16. It's for a birthday. This is awfully stained. Five bucks. We'll give you five bucks.
Starting point is 01:13:46 That is, look, she doesn't really want it. You don't want to hold on to this present you got for the rest of your life. She wasn't using it. Exactly. But I can't cut that out. I just have to look at both her and her mom, feeling so mad to me. Okay, right now for some overheard.
Starting point is 01:14:07 I think we actually have some business. Goodland. Okay, let's move out of some business then. That sound means it's time for a little bit of business. And this week, we've got a jumbotron. Jumbodron. Which is how you can send a fun message. to somebody you love or somebody you're really trying to piss off.
Starting point is 01:14:28 If you want to order one up for yourself, you can go to maximum fun.org slash jumbotron. And this week, it is for Bart from Liz, aka shiny shoes. What is your message? Dave, what is the message? The message is congratulations on graduating from BCIT. You are an amazing human being with a bright future ahead of you. I am so proud of you
Starting point is 01:14:53 And I am, as always, so glad that I know you. Oh, that's so nice. And as someone who graduated from BCIT myself, I can tell you, oh, the world is an oyster. It gets better. Well, yeah, that's very sweet. And thanks so much for sending that in. And should we move on to some overheard?
Starting point is 01:15:17 Let's do it. Hey, are you playing a video? video game right now. Maybe you put on a podcast while grinding in an RPG. Or maybe you just don't want to hear that boss fight music one more time. Been there. I'm Maddie Myers. I'm Jason Dreyer. And I'm Kirk Hamilton. We're the hosts of Triple Click, a video game podcast. Starting point is 01:15:55 Triple Click. Listen on Maximumfund.org or wherever you find your podcasts. The Flop House is a podcast where we watch a bad movie and then we talk about it. Robert Shaw in Jaws and they're trying to figure out how to get rid of the gooies and he scratches his nails goes, I'll get you ghouly. He's just standing
Starting point is 01:16:11 above the toilet with the harbourn. No, I'm just looking forward to you going through the other ways in which Wild Wild West is historically inaccurate. You know how much movies cost nowadays when you add in your popped corn? and your bagel bites and your cheese critters. You can't go wrong with Henry Cabell Mustache. Here at Henry Cattle Mustache is the only supplier.
Starting point is 01:16:29 The flop house. New episodes every Saturday. Find it at maximum fun.org. Overheard. Overheard. It's a segment of the show where if you hear it, we want to hear it too. It's only fair. Don't keep it to yourself.
Starting point is 01:16:47 And we always like to start with the guests. Aaron, do you have an overheard? I have overheard. Overseen. I've never done one of these. This is exciting. Has overheard overseen two separate ones? No, it's all one.
Starting point is 01:16:59 But I guess, yeah, it's hard. It was an experience. Me and Cass went to Sardinia, which is an island in Italy a while ago. And there was like, we're at a little cafe in like a little beach town. And they have like, at least full of like bad carnival rides. Okay. Yeah. Because you know a lot of carnival rides come from Italy.
Starting point is 01:17:20 They're just. I didn't know that. No, yeah, they're good at machining and they like novelty things. And they're always like. No, they make Lamborghini. Yeah, exactly. They're always terribly ripped off. Exactly.
Starting point is 01:17:29 Exactly. It's like a bad Spider-Man. No one's licensed it. Spider-Fergo, it's pretty good. And then there was this family, there was like parents and they were, sorry, this is the long overheard.
Starting point is 01:17:42 There was parents and they took their little kid to a cafe and they let her ride a terrible ride. And they were both on their phones and smoking cigarettes and really into their phones and cigarettes. Oh, I miss Italy. They were just, having fun.
Starting point is 01:17:56 These were Italian parents and their kid was starting to get bored and starting to act out. So she did an impression of her parents so she put a fake cell phone in one hand
Starting point is 01:18:05 and in fake cigarettes in the other. And she was like, chow, chow, chow. Sick burn. Yeah, got him. And she's not wrong.
Starting point is 01:18:16 Oh, man, that's good. Oh, man, what a rich culture. Yeah. Machining. Cell phones. Smoking. ignoring your children. I only realized this.
Starting point is 01:18:28 I grew up in Calgary, which every year has the stampede. So always has a midway that was always made by a company called Conklin. And I only, and it was a clown's face was there, the logo. And I was like, I never knew what that meant.
Starting point is 01:18:42 But there was a dude that started this all. There was a clown named Conklin. And he was the first person to have pink lemonade. No way. Is he made lemonade in a container. Some power red pink. In a container that somebody had been rinsing their, like, pink, you know, circus costume or something like that. Oh, that's terrible.
Starting point is 01:19:05 And it said that it flew off the shelves. I mean, back then, you could mix it in anything. There were no laws. It's really, like, yeah, there's, it's not different than regular lemonade. When you buy it in the store. No, it's the same. Yeah. But it looks good.
Starting point is 01:19:18 They do sell, like, Minutemate sales, like, raspberry lemonade. And you're like, oh, is this pink lemonade? No, it's raspberry. It says, right? right on the tube. Pink lemonade is just you gotta watch your red shorts in it.
Starting point is 01:19:32 And there you're... Well, that's great. Thanks for the history lesson. Oh, yeah. Go Conklin. I love it. I thought you were going to say it was named after the sound of your head mix
Starting point is 01:19:41 when it hits the pavement. Conk, Conklin. Dave, do you haven't overheard? Yeah, this is actually not unrelated from our earlier conversation, although it took place at a a completely different place. I was in Shoppers Drug Mart,
Starting point is 01:19:58 everything you want in a drugstore. Until midnight. And there was a mother and a child. And the kid was like, um, you know, like trying to get a bag of chips. And the mother didn't want her to have,
Starting point is 01:20:13 want him to have it. Yeah. And then he was trying to grab other stuff. And the mom wouldn't let him have it. And she had an accent and I'm not going to do the accent, but it's, somewhere European. Sure.
Starting point is 01:20:27 And so, but then the kid wasn't, like, allowed to have any of these treats. And so he said, when we get home, can I have a hot dog? And the mom goes, hot dog is not food. Hot dog is treats. Hot dog is for Tuesdays. Yeah. Yeah. You got to get one of those 75-cent hot dog.
Starting point is 01:20:50 When I was a kid and I wanted a hot dog, the hot dog, the hot dog was. were frozen and I had to chisel out a hot dog from the frozen pack of with a fork. Yeah. Well, I use a knife. Oh, dangerous. Really, yeah, could have sod right through my hand. Because I sometimes buy a pack of hot dogs.
Starting point is 01:21:09 But you'd like keep in the fridge. Keep them in the fridge. Because I assume they're good for a couple weeks. I think so, but ours would be in the freezer always. I like how cigarettes and hot dogs come in packs. Yeah. It's like the same thing. You flip the first one.
Starting point is 01:21:23 You're lucky. I'll eat that later. Roll it up in your sleep. Is that a... Traditional... Is that a cigarette thing? Yeah, you flip your first one and then you put it back in? I guess you smoke it at the end or when you need a good luck.
Starting point is 01:21:38 Before you buy a lottery ticket. I didn't do this. This is... Smoker lore. Smoker lore. I hit the... I hit the cigarette package on my hand. Someone says it gets the nicotine to the front.
Starting point is 01:21:48 Yeah, I mean, it's all nonsense. I love it. But yeah, I knew a guy. when I worked at the stampede who had the cigarettes rolled up in his sleeve he was like a rockabilly guy it's a carny move
Starting point is 01:22:01 yeah oh man I should have been a carty probably not too late for me to be a carny well you've got that Italian machining ethic and I know who Conklin is that I passed that part of the test You're a nepo real nepo
Starting point is 01:22:14 I also have an overheard and it's from two girls talking about the city of Fort McMurray, Fort McMurray, Alberta. This is the oil town. Yeah, this is where everybody goes to work in the oil patch. And she was saying, Fort McMurray has one bar and everybody is there. And they're all old.
Starting point is 01:22:41 So I feel like she went to one bar. There's a lot of old people. Yeah, there's a lot of... There's a lot of bars. A lot of opportunity for people working on the rigs to drink. Yes. and if you ever go there and do, are you going to take clowns selling up to Fort Mac?
Starting point is 01:22:57 Uh, whew, you'll drink a lot, you know, because they, they will buy you shots. Oh yeah, yeah, yeah,
Starting point is 01:23:02 yeah, yeah, that's cool. Um, it's, uh, the one place I played, all Newfoundlanders,
Starting point is 01:23:07 but yeah, yeah, they were whooping it up. That's sick. Yeah, uh, some of the best party people in our country, I would say.
Starting point is 01:23:13 Newfoundlanders? Yeah, who are working on the rigs? Working on the rigs, working on the rail road, all the live long day. Um, Now, we also have overheard sent to us.
Starting point is 01:23:23 Working in a cold mine going down, down. Yeah, what's the one I know? Working for the weekend. I owe my soul to the company store. That's a great one. These are great coal mining songs. The theme of these songs, work. Yes.
Starting point is 01:23:40 And you know what? Work? Yeah. Pass. Not for me. Work, bitch. You better work, bitch. You want a mazorati?
Starting point is 01:23:49 You want a mazorati? You want a mazorah? Yeah, better work, bitch. Um, if you want to send in an overheard to us, you can send it into SBIY at maximum fun.org. And, uh, this first, uh, overheard comes from Lori H from Peoria, Illinois. Beloria. Beloria. I am at scout camp with my kids troop this week.
Starting point is 01:24:12 And one of the scouts got into a scuffle with someone from another troop playing carpet ball and he was banned from playing the rest of the week. Last night, he and some other kids were workshop. his speech to plea for his reinstatement of carpet ball privileges. My favorite version was, Here you hearie, program director. I gave that one kid a purple nerple
Starting point is 01:24:31 for a good reason. And for a good cause. It was self-defense, Your Honor, and also I'm insane. What do we think carpetball is? I think it's probably like Dodgeball, but in, you know, carpeted. I'm picturing Dodgeball as well,
Starting point is 01:24:47 just in a weird gym that has a carpet. Yeah, and also like probably a lot of static electricity. There was one high school that had a carpet for their basketball court in the lower mainland. Wicked rug burn. Okay, let's look up. Carpet balls is a public youth camp and pub style game played on a long, narrow,
Starting point is 01:25:08 high walled table using standard billiard balls. Hmm. That you throw or you roll or you... It's unclear. It's impossible to know. But, you know, look it up. Go to your local. It looks like a...
Starting point is 01:25:23 Cool. Yeah, it looks like a cross between pool and like... Like shuffleboard? Yeah, shuffleboard or... What's the one where you're at the carnival and you're throwing balls into holes? Skiball? Skiball. Yeah, it's like...
Starting point is 01:25:37 Conklin invented the first pink one of those. Okay, carpalball. Hopefully that kid got reinstated. Yeah. Here you, hear you. He perped his nirp and self-defense. This next one comes from... From Daniel C.
Starting point is 01:25:53 Overheard while walking downtown. Two 20-something women are talking at a table outside eating lunch. This is two going back and forth. So he's voiced by Benedict Cumberbatch and the other girl. Oh, God, he's so hot. She said, he's a CGI dragon. She says, I bet you he's a hot as a dragon too. And our friend goes, girl, stop.
Starting point is 01:26:16 Stop making fun of Smog. Is that who they're talking about? Probably. The Benedict Cumberbatch was also the voice of Someone in a Thing I saw and wasn't so oh yeah He was the new Grinch Really? Oh, that's right, in the Grinch.
Starting point is 01:26:35 In the Grinch that's narrated by Ferell. And it's... What? That grin is really good. I missed all this. It's a lot of fun. It's, you know, it's something if you guys are on the road and you're looking for a movie to watch, Grinch, Grinch it up.
Starting point is 01:26:49 The, um, this carpet ball has a great. reminded me that my Instagram algorithm is a lot of like games, like table games and like not quite board games, but like maybe bar games even. Like there's one with like elastic bands and little hockey pucks
Starting point is 01:27:07 that you try to get all your pucks over on the other person's side while they're doing theirs towards you. That's fine. I know crocanol. I know Pichinette. Pichinette. It's like similar to croconell I think. And this reminds me of, it's like very Canadian And apparently there's a game where you have a cut off hockey stick. No one knows about this.
Starting point is 01:27:26 I remember playing it like a Canada once. You have a cut off hockey stick. You try to like get a puck through a. Yes, I have played that. It's so weird. I think I played that at a like military bar. Yeah, it's like Depression era.
Starting point is 01:27:40 Yeah, yeah, yeah. So you can get this 12 foot carpet ball table on Etsy for $1,100 Canadian. That's crazy. And you can get 12 subway dogs to lay a, end to end on this table. And you can also, you were saying crocanol? Crocannol.
Starting point is 01:27:57 You know croconell. Well, I do, but it's like a maritime game, mic timer game, isn't it? Boy, I can't spell it. I think he's got a cue in there. There's no cue. And it's like, you have these little discs that you, like, flick towards the center.
Starting point is 01:28:12 It's kind of like curling, but a board game. You need iron nails. And somebody is listening to this and be like, well, that's three things I got to look up. Curling idiot. I got to look like I got to look up crocano I have to look up curling
Starting point is 01:28:25 and carpet ball carpet ball Jesus Christ Um This last one comes from Jason from Iowa I was in a hotel lobby Hey
Starting point is 01:28:33 The meat truck is from there Oh shit I'm Moo I was in a hotel lobby in Cleveland And overheard a woman Near me
Starting point is 01:28:44 Talking loudly on her phone This is 956 a.m. When's your appointment At 10 o'clock You just ate a bunch of Oreos and you're going to go to the dentist. Did you brush your teeth? Yes, of course you do. Yes, always.
Starting point is 01:29:01 Oreos? Hard to get out. Yeah, I don't have to brush them anything. Yes, of course you do. No, they're going to brush it there for me. Well, they are. That's true. But they're going to be mad.
Starting point is 01:29:09 They're going to take it out on you, gum-wise. It is hard. Like, if you're eating straight Oreos and there's no milk involved or anything like that, those stick around. I've got my teeth like it takes hours. Yeah. Yeah. It's.
Starting point is 01:29:25 And they're black. They're black and it's hard to rinse up. But you know what? Worth it. So worth it. For me, the problem is I wear a night guard. So like if I like if I eat Oreos before bed, I'll brush my teeth.
Starting point is 01:29:40 Then I'm not going to get them all out. Then I go to and then I put in my night guard. I'm trapping them in. Yeah. Sweet dreams. Yeah. And you wake up to just like, hmm, I'm like. That Oreo flavor.
Starting point is 01:29:54 Do we also have other overheards? I guess. We do. In addition to overheards that are written and we also accept your phone calls and your voice memos. Send a voice memo to SPY at maximum fun.org or leave a voicemail at 1-844-779-7631. That's one. Ugh. SpyPod one like these people have.
Starting point is 01:30:16 Hi, Dave and Graham and possible guest. It's Rob from the UK calling with a lot of. slightly meta overheard in that the thing I overheard was a stop podcasting yourself episode and number 954 with Rachel Schaefer. Now, I don't know if you're familiar, but in the UK, the word growler is slang for, I guess, a particularly hairy fanny. And also in the UK, unlike in North America, where it means bottom, fanny in the UK very specifically means a lady's front bottom. Yeah. So you can only... imagine my delight and that of all of your
Starting point is 01:30:52 UK listeners when Rachel and yourselves were talking for about 10 minutes about growlers and in particular I think the line will refill anyone's growler was a particular highlight so anyway that's that I hope it's been as delightful for you as it
Starting point is 01:31:08 was for me it was pretty delightful yeah we're not throwing around fanny for butts much anymore no and also I've realized after that and it might just be
Starting point is 01:31:20 regional, but that a growler could also refer to a particularly big shit. And in the UK, we spell diarrhea with a no. Isn't it? In it? Yeah, I don't hear Fannie as much anymore. You know, and wouldn't be surprised to, in the era now of old-timey names the kids have, I wouldn't be surprised to see a young kid named Fanny. Yeah.
Starting point is 01:31:49 If you're looking for a name out there, try Fanny. Yeah. Fanny. Fannie Bay. Fannie Bright. Let me just Google Fanny. Famous Fannies. Oh, God.
Starting point is 01:32:03 Oh, no. I'm at famousfanties.com. UK. And it's their number one porno. This site is not secure. They have the Royal Seal. Fancy Fannies. Well, here's your next one.
Starting point is 01:32:19 dudes. Hi guys, I was just walking around the perimeter of my zoo, checking me make sure the fence is intact. I do this every month, and I came face to face with a guy wearing a complete Freight Clintstone outfit. Granted, it's 90 degrees out here today, so maybe it's a nice, comfortable outfit to wear. But I had not seen anyone ever wearing a complete Freight Clinstone costume, I guess.
Starting point is 01:32:46 love you I love you too Do we think it was a Fred Flintstone Matt like has a head A mascot or was it just Loincloth Yeah Orange loincloth with necktie
Starting point is 01:33:02 Yeah Although that would be good in the hot heat Hot hot heat because it's no pants No pants No sleeves No shoes no socks What I liked about this was He just started without
Starting point is 01:33:16 identifying himself or saying what his job is. And he says, I was doing the rounds at my zoo, checking to make sure that the fence was secure, which I do once a month, you gotta be doing it every day. You tell me those orangutans aren't monkeying around with those things? Maybe that guy just killed a cheetah and is wearing it. You ever read Good Night Gorilla? They're getting out. The moment you have your back turned.
Starting point is 01:33:44 You've probably seen the like, it's, um, gets passed around a lot on social media about the orangutang getting out of his enclosure and walking around at night. No. He was caught on camera walking around, just looking at the other animals, except he stopped by another area where an orangutan he hated was and threw rocks at it. Oh, that's good. Yeah. They're just like us. Well, they got in a carpet ball dispute.
Starting point is 01:34:12 Hear ye, hear ye. I was trying to give that kid a purple nipple. And finally. Hi, Dave, Graham, and possible guests. This is Levi from Oklahoma. My overheard is that I recently went to a showing of Jackass 5. And if you don't know about the Jackassers, I assume you guys do, but it's just a whole bunch of dudes pranking each other and hurting each other
Starting point is 01:34:39 and generally kind of being mean to each other. but anyway throughout the entire movie and the theater you know there's some laughter but it's generally a pretty respectful
Starting point is 01:34:51 silent viewing and there was one girl in the front row that every time something bad happened or somebody got hurt or somebody got prank she just went aw
Starting point is 01:35:06 poor guy that's it off I go Poor Steve-oh. Yeah. I love jackass. Would you describe it as people generally being mean to each other? I think it's the opposite.
Starting point is 01:35:24 It seems like everybody knows that they're going to do something gross or dangerous. I've always thought they were so funny. And I read somebody's review of it as like, well, this is really the dumbing down of America. I was like, you guys had the three stooges like 100 years ago. The guy writing the article? I was just like, that's, you guys, it's been dumb for a long time. It's not, dude, just jackass.
Starting point is 01:35:53 Why can't we go back to the Three Stooges? When bodily harm was classy. Wink. Yuck, yuck, yuck. His laptop closes on his fingers. Modern day three stooges? Yes, please. Well, they did it, didn't they?
Starting point is 01:36:10 Yeah, but I want, oh yeah, it was Sean. Hayes, Will Sassau, and Chris Diametopoulos, or whatever, was that his name? I don't know, but if you want to check it out, Alpha Videos got it in stock. Yeah, it was that, did it take place in modern times? Yes. And, but they were old-timey. So they weren't modern times. They were in black and white.
Starting point is 01:36:32 Yeah, it was like Pleasantville, Pleasantville style. Well, that brings us to the end of the podcast. Aaron, plug away. Tell us where can people find you?
