Starting point is 00:00:03 Hi, he's Dave Shumka. And he's Graham Clark. And together we host Stop Podcasting Yourself. Woo! Hello, everybody, and welcome to episode number nine. She takes 64. I screwed it up. I'm sorry.
Starting point is 00:00:29 Hello, everybody, and welcome to episode number nine, 64 of Stop Podcasting Yourself. My name is Graham Clark. And with me, as always, is a man who, according to his own records and estimates, he's using the last of his summer crops to make one delicious meal for his family. Mr. Dave Shimka. Yeah, and then we are starving. No, I'm doing basil. We're making a pesto.
Starting point is 00:00:52 But, you know, I got plenty of cherry tomatoes. The cherry tomato plant exploded. There's more basil under it somewhere, but. Okay. And so it's like, I need to cut it back because it goes into the yard. Like, it goes over the plant area and into the grass area where it gets urinated on. Yes. By the dogs and neighborhood teens.
Starting point is 00:01:14 Yeah. Johnny Debt. Ep comes, but I was, you also said this is episode 964, Nintendo 64. Oh, nice. Oh, that. We've been waiting for that for a long time. So, you know, um, did they have a slogan? It's Nintendo 64?
Starting point is 00:01:29 Yeah. It was PlayStation. Sega. Um, our guest is a first time guest here on the podcast. Very funny. You can find out all about him on his Instagram at Gavin Clarkson. Comedy is Gavin Clarkson. Hello.
Starting point is 00:01:45 Hello, good to be here. Thank you for being on the show. Thank you for having me. I think Dave's looking up the slogan. Here we have. The primary slogan for Nintendo 64 in the United States was get N or get out. Really? I don't think I'd ever heard that before.
Starting point is 00:01:59 We called it the N64. Oh, get N. Yeah. Okay. Get in or get out. Okay. I feel like if none of us remember that, that was a failed marketing campaign. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:02:09 Well, I mean, I still played it. I still liked it. True. You know, what, uh, let's get those. Get to know us. Okay, so the German slogan was the new dimension of fun. That's pretty good. De no dimension de spaces.
Starting point is 00:02:30 This was back when we were... Spaces? It's really all about polygon counts. Yeah, and then the game, in Japanese, it was the game changes. 64 changes. Okay. Okay. But that was just for a Super Barrio, 60.
Starting point is 00:02:43 And, you know, women go through 64 changes, big changes in their life. There's menopause, menopause two, metapause three. Puberty. Puberty, too, by Mitzky. Return of the menopause. So what is menopause looking for you, Gavin? What does it look at it? Moderate to advance.
Starting point is 00:03:01 Oh, nice. Okay. Oh, yeah, peri menopause. No, Perry, Mason Penetor. Perry comopause. These are all very good. Kevin, excuse me. That's what having fun.
Starting point is 00:03:17 What was when you were a youth? What was your entertainment system? What did you grow up with? Whatever my friends had. We weren't the video game house. So I would go to friends places and then pretend they didn't exist if they had a game. Sure. Yeah, yeah.
Starting point is 00:03:31 It was the sleepover device. What era was it? That would have been the 90s. So I started with Super Nintendo and then the N-64 was the big one. Yeah. Yeah. Super Nintendo, Sega Genesis. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:03:43 Kind of thing. Were you... Couldn't picture this. Were you friends with somebody just because of... Because I was. I was friends with somebody just because of video game. It helped in a couple of cases. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:03:55 But it was never the primary factor that I can recall. I never had any friends... End stop. I feel like I had... That was a plus, but I never based a friendship on that. Yeah. It was more like, hey, can I get old gander at your mom? Poops.
Starting point is 00:04:15 We all had that guy. We all had that. Yeah. Everybody had a... Did you have a friend that had a hot mom? Hot mom friend? Yeah. I don't think I did.
Starting point is 00:04:25 No. I did. Yeah. There was one in high school that just everybody knew about. I wasn't friends with him directly, but everyone's like, that guy's mom is just the tits, we would say. And the ass, you know? She's got it all, really. So you grew up around here, BC?
Starting point is 00:04:42 Where'd you grow up? In Whitehorse, in the Yukon. The Yukon. Can you believe it? Yeah. So, UK, this, when you told me this, I was like, oh, boy, this is, well, now that I know that you didn't have video games in your house and you had to go to your friend's houses. Yeah. Was there ever, would you risk a bear attack to go play video games?
Starting point is 00:05:02 Every day. You risk a bear attack to do any activity. That's true. Yeah. White Horse is the capital of Yukon. Yeah. It is, um, what's a population? and like,
Starting point is 00:05:13 like 35,000. Wow, that's even, that's lower than I was going to say. I thought like, maybe 75, 35,000. Yeah, yeah,
Starting point is 00:05:20 it might be at like 40-ish. I haven't checked its Wikipedia page in a while. It's only got one guy updating it. Did you grow up there and then leave for university or okay? Yeah, I was there until I was about 18. Then I moved down to the big city of Vancouver for education. It's a great place.
Starting point is 00:05:35 I go back there at least a couple times a year. I sell a family up there. Okay. And I'm always fall back in love with it again every time I visit. And then my wife reminds me that I'm visiting it in July. Yeah. So it is a biased sample of what the town has to offer. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:05:49 What's winter? Like, I've been up there in the winter for a couple of days. But what's like the full dark winter like? It never gets permanently dark. We get about 21-ish hours of darkness at its peak. Okay. Just a few hours of sun during the day. And consistently cold, snow, enough snow to do stuff.
Starting point is 00:06:08 But still, you only have limited daylight to do it in. So it's a press. But there's a really cool community that spawns from that. Because you have to find indoor things to do. So there's really great arts community. There's always something happening in the town of small, close-knit communities. Nice. What are we talking?
Starting point is 00:06:25 Are we talking like key parties or what kind of things? Exclusively key parties. The grimy. And maybe it's the change of the weather. I don't know. It's firmly fall. And we just want to be cozy with someone. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:06:42 Someone random. The only thing that's, like, bad about today is it's raining, but it's also not cold. Yeah. There's no way to dress for it. The next month is going to be. We're recording this in a big, you know, rainy day. I guess I didn't need to explain this. Were you guys around last week or the week before when there was all that lightning?
Starting point is 00:07:02 Yeah. Yeah. Big record one. Yeah, it was the most lightning ever. Really? I don't know. That's what Instagram made it seem like. I mean, I grew up here.
Starting point is 00:07:11 We don't get that. that we don't get lightning. No. No. And it was like hours and hours of thunder. I went out in the, you know, in the rain and I yelled, is that all you got? I was doing a Frankenstein. I was screaming.
Starting point is 00:07:24 It's alive. Oh, yeah. Yeah. That's my lightning reaction. At one point, Dave texted me and said, I'm bored of this store. Did I really? Yeah. We were texting back forth by the day.
Starting point is 00:07:35 You're like, I'm bored of this. Yeah. The novelty wears off. It was kind of the same thing over. Yeah. Yeah. They only have so many tricks. Well, like, the thing about.
Starting point is 00:07:42 I always learned was, you know, you see the flash of lightning, then you count. Yeah. And that's how many miles away. Like, and then you hear the thunder. That's how many miles away the lightning was. Yeah. I've never gotten the math of the count. People just tell me to count, which I always do, but I have no idea what it means.
Starting point is 00:07:58 Is it, you're just like measuring the storm is getting closer or further away as, like, you count every time there's a lightning strike? I mean, it definitely moved because it was right over top of us, because it, when a thunder hit, like, all the dishes in the place. Rattled. It was like, hey. But I also felt like there was so much of it that I couldn't keep track of it. It's all around us.
Starting point is 00:08:21 Fair. Then you're in the eye of it. Yeah. There was also a lot of people walking around not paying attention to it before, like the rain started. And I was like, you guys can all see this though, right? Like there's a storm very much on its way.
Starting point is 00:08:33 They were also bored of it very quickly. They were bored of it before they even had. Who cares? What were like, yeah, how would you prepare? Just get inside? Mm-hmm. and you wouldn't be like let's go fly a kite
Starting point is 00:08:44 wow I mean you know if I had one sure if you wanted to discover something yeah I put a key on it is that part of it that's a key party I don't know what Ben Franklin what he was up to he's not he didn't discover electricity did he
Starting point is 00:09:01 yeah I can't imagine he got struck by lightning holding a key and then made a light bulb like I don't know the correlation between his experiment I mean like I discovered electricity You were struck by lightning. I don't think he even was. I think it's just like legend.
Starting point is 00:09:15 Yeah. He kind of, I don't really... We don't learn American history. We don't know who Benjamin and Frank. Like, I know him by name. Yeah. I know he invented bifocals. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:09:25 I know he didn't even know that. It's, uh, I know that he flew the kite with the key. Uh-huh. He wore pantaloons. He were pantalo. He couldn't tell a lie. No, he could tell a lie. Washington couldn't tell a lie.
Starting point is 00:09:36 He chopped down a cherry tree, he had wooden dentures. He had a different superpower of the, of the founding fathers. Yeah, yeah. But he is a founding father? I think so. Not, yeah, he never was, he never served politically. But he served cuts.
Starting point is 00:09:53 I like that we're allowed to say that word now. Thank you. Thank you, Benjamin Franklin. But he, yeah, he was like, you know, there were a few founding fathers who were just like, like, I think Samuel Adams, the brewer was one of them. Right. He was just like, well, I'm here too. but I'll sign your document if you want Yeah, if you need witnesses, I'll sign your documents.
Starting point is 00:10:15 He's not a discerning fellow with being a witness on documents. Well, he was usually drunk. Usually very drunk. Yeah, he was drunk. Didn't have the bifocals just yet. Really, I was just focused. None of them could read. None of them could even tell who was signing it.
Starting point is 00:10:29 You can only see stuff far away or close. They only able to write the Declaration of Independence after the bifocals were invented. And it was, we're still feather pen when we're signing the declaration of independent. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Now, Gavin, you are in a group of names that I get confused for.
Starting point is 00:10:51 There's a quadrant of them. Okay, Gavin Clarkson. Gavin Clarkson. So you're Graham Clark. I'm Graham Clark. You're Gavin Clark. You're Gavin Chittenden. We've got Graham K.
Starting point is 00:11:00 Yeah. We've got Garrett Clark. These are the big, these are the big four. The big GCs. Yeah, yeah. That everybody's like, yeah. We've had Graham K on the show. We have, yeah.
Starting point is 00:11:10 Graham Chitten has never been out this way. Um, uh, now you, it is, okay. My whole life it was called the Yukon. Now people are just calling it Yukon. No, very much a controversial thing up there. Uh, they tried rebranding the territory to just Yukon and all of its media, I guess. I'm not sure what the declaration was. There was some government thing.
Starting point is 00:11:31 And everyone there was like, no, it's the Yukon. Okay. Yukon feels weird to say. Well, I'm, my family is from the Ukraine, which is apparently just, Just Ukraine. I'm getting used to just being Ukraine, but up until very like, until this war started, I was like the Ukraine. But do we call it that because of the Yukon? Yeah.
Starting point is 00:11:50 I also got, even just the other day, I told someone I was from the Yukon, and he thought I was referring to the University of Connecticut, which was wrong. So we share T-shirts, I guess. Hey, if anybody wants to trade T-shirts with Gavin Clark. Yeah, we're doing a big T-shirt swap. Yukon for Yukon Also if it's Tarzan pointing out some Con man, Yukon
Starting point is 00:12:14 Yeah, yep Yukon Jane Just a lighter whiskey Than Yukon Jack Is Yukon Jack A whiskey? I think so Or is it a cure?
Starting point is 00:12:28 I don't know I've never heard of it Yeah What are the big products We're big on the Yukon gold potatoes Yeah Oh yeah Yeah
Starting point is 00:12:36 Yeah I invented in Ontario I'm fairly sure. Yeah. Because gold was what? Was it in them hills? Big thing up there. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:12:42 Them hills were the Yukon. Now you are geologists. Yes. Yeah. Did you get into that because you love gold? I was involved in mining is like my dad's a mining engineer. So I grew up in like the gold fields around the Yukon, which really makes it sound like I'm from 1870. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:12:59 Is there still gold in them there hills? Yeah. Nemlar Hills still have some gold. Okay. It's harder to find than it used to be and it looks a lot different. What are they? what kind of apparatus do they use to find this gold? It's mostly you drill little holes to see if you can find some gravel,
Starting point is 00:13:15 which implies a buried creek bed, and then you test it has gold in it, and then you go digging for it. All the ones on the top have been dug out. Those are the easy ones. But there's enough gold there to make it worth everybody's watch. At these wartime prices, yeah. Okay. Oh, shit, I've got to get some gold.
Starting point is 00:13:30 No, not now. It's expensive. You're too late. You're behind. I pity the fool who doesn't have gold. Mr. D wears a lot of chains. He's their biggest buyer. The, yeah, gold.
Starting point is 00:13:44 Are you excited for the new Austin Power? I, uh... Has anyone seen, like, I saw the first one a million times. Yeah. I saw the second one, a handful of times. Yeah. I think I saw the third one once. I think that's a pretty average Austin Powers trilogy experience.
Starting point is 00:14:03 Although I think people, for... It was a thing that was on TV a lot. Yeah, and people... Always a great sign for a movie. Well, I mean, isn't it? Yeah. I mean, there was a time when, like, you would just watch whatever was on, I guess, much music for a while. Yeah, much more music.
Starting point is 00:14:19 Yeah, it was, um, the third one's bad, but it's not, um, it's not unwatchable. Yeah. Now, that's, that's a great way to put it, I think. But he should never do another one. No, yeah, that's coming. I know. I don't want it. No.
Starting point is 00:14:35 I want to send it back. Everything's got to be a friend. franchise. That's what makes money. I just hope we get to watch Beyonce's struggle to act again. That's my favorite favorite role of hers. Wow, she was up and coming and now she's way no way she's returning a phone call for
Starting point is 00:14:49 this movie. Come on, everybody's coming back for the sequel, Beyonce. Yeah. We've got Fat Bastor, we've got a gold member, we got Doug Reel, they're all coming back. Did I either you guys see his weird Netflix show?
Starting point is 00:15:07 called like, I think it was called the Pentavarit. No, I didn't know he did a thing. It was very the clumps. Like, he played a bunch of different characters in it. Oh, good. But, uh, they all kind of sound the same. Like, he can only do so many accents, right? He can do a Scottish.
Starting point is 00:15:20 He can do an English. Mm-hmm. He can do, I think, a couple English. Yeah. Yeah. And then he, he can do German Dieter. Oh, yeah. That's true?
Starting point is 00:15:29 Dr. Reveld, Lauren Michaels. You can do Canadian. Canadian Wayne. Um, he, uh, anyways, it's a, really, it's one of those things where it's like, I feel like Netflix was doing a thing where they're like, okay, if you had a thing that was successful before, we'll give you a show,
Starting point is 00:15:46 we'll give it back to you. But like, you say it's like the clumps. Eddie Murphy doesn't have a bunch of different voices for the clumps. They're all kind of the same. Well, I'm going to agree to disagree on that. I feel like I, if you heard a selection of the clumps voices.
Starting point is 00:15:59 But it's not like, oh, one Scottish one's German. That's true. They are all the same country. They are prosthetics heavy, uh, characters on that one. I forgot. I was watching the Eddie Murphy documentary and midway through, I was like, huh, this is, uh, he's done a lot of stuff. And then they brought up Nuddy Professor. I was like, oh my God, I forgot that he did this. Oh, man. Yeah. That's worth a rewatch. I haven't seen that one in ages. Yeah. Yeah. I remember loving it. I wonder if I will still.
Starting point is 00:16:28 What was your like comedy movie that you watched over and over and over again? Oh, probably like liar, liar when I was a kid. liar. Yeah, that was, that was, uh, we didn't have cable. We just had, uh, tapes that I think the statute of limitations has expired that we would just record from rentals. So we would just steal all of our tapes. Oh, you had two, you had a double, uh, double VCR. We, we've been pirating before the internet way back then.
Starting point is 00:16:51 What was the, uh, video rental situation like up there? Pardon me, my questions will all be about white horse. As they should be. It is a weirdly unique place. There might be more people in the University of Connecticut than there are in the Yukon. Uh, but we did. The North is actually very rental-friendly. I think the last blockbuster was in Alaska.
Starting point is 00:17:10 Yeah. Because it took a while for streaming internet to be widespread enough for people to be able to watch movies. So we relied heavily on DVD sales. So there was, in the small town of Whitehurst, I think when I was a teenager, there was a good three or four separate rental spots. Were they like a blockbuster? We had no blockbuster.
Starting point is 00:17:28 I think the name one was Rogers. Okay. Okay. That we had that, which has the little adult curtain. area, which was very mysterious when I was a kid. Oh, sure. Yeah. If you don't have internet, you don't want that.
Starting point is 00:17:40 Yeah. Are you going to make yourself a provocative snowman? You need a reference material for it. You don't have to know where everything goes. I also love, I don't know if it was this way at other rental places down south, but our adult section in Rogers, uh, it had the privacy curtain, of course. But behind that privacy curtain was a beaded curtain, which feels very mean. That's the loudest curtain.
Starting point is 00:18:06 It is. The loudest curtain. And anybody's sneaking in there for a little bit of a dirty flick, turns every head. What's the second loudest curtain? Macaroni. Iron. That one was quite quiet, actually. At the video store that I grew up with, they had like saloon doors into the adult section.
Starting point is 00:18:28 Right on. That's the second loudest. Also, there's a donkey there. But you could. It wasn't floor to ceiling, so you could peek overnight. Yeah. Yeah. What purpose does that door serve?
Starting point is 00:18:42 It doesn't keep anything out. Doesn't keep anything out. Yeah. You're right. Yeah. Why just have an open doorway. It's like a mental block. It's like, well, if you're a kid, you're like, I'll never.
Starting point is 00:18:56 I can't go through there. It's squeak too loud. Yeah. I had it. Like, when I was growing up, there was a couple of video stores, no adult section. It was all just general general section. Well, Blockbuster didn't have one. Yeah, they were very, like, that was their big thing.
Starting point is 00:19:11 They would never have adult films. Yeah. That's why they didn't make it up in the cold north. I remember their big thing being like guaranteed rentals. When they had a new release, you would get a, they would have so, they would have a wall. They did a guarantee. That's insane. On, like, opening weekend, they would have a million copies of Twister.
Starting point is 00:19:29 And then I guess if they ran out, you would get a voucher. Yeah. Okay. But it was like, those were like when you had a one-day rental. Yeah. Yeah. Can you imagine? I, uh, I wanted to watch a movie on iTunes the other day and it was like, you have
Starting point is 00:19:44 48 hours to watch this. And I was like, I don't want to. I can't do it. Do it for it. Um, do you remember, uh, in your, in your home video store, was it a video store that played movies on TV? Oh, of course. Because there were some that weren't some that didn't.
Starting point is 00:19:59 Really? Yeah. I thought that was their whole business model because how else would you know, If you didn't get that snippet hanging from the ceiling. Yeah. Would it play movies or would it play like... It was both in mind. It would be a mix of promos and actual films that the teenage staff would get bored of the promos and put on an actual film.
Starting point is 00:20:17 Yeah. Was there a cool video store? It was like the indie or was it all just video store? The closest to a cool one was just like every gas station had a few on a rack behind the guy. Yeah, that's the real indie one. Would it work in your view? VCR or destroyed. You never knew.
Starting point is 00:20:35 That was part of the fun. Yeah. When do you remember what the last VHS tape you ever viewed was? Oh, man. That is an excellent question. Probably liar-lire. You still have it. Still the VCR, just to play that.
Starting point is 00:20:48 It's the only way to experience the film. Yeah, it's true. You want to see the trailers for other movies that are coming out on that same company. Yep. That was always fun. Yeah. It would be, if I had a VHS to watch right now, I'd be so excited to see the ads. Abby's parents, Abby, my wife, grew up in Europe, and for years they didn't have cable.
Starting point is 00:21:11 And so they just had a huge collection of VHSs. And they were, they somehow figured out, they had a machine that would play both North American and European. They were different? Well, yeah, there's a different. NTSC or PAL. What was the French one? Oh, I feel like Pal. For sure, Pal was in Britain because I remember being sent to something that I couldn't watch.
Starting point is 00:21:42 C-C-C-A-M. Yeah, they were all like different, what, frequencies or? Yeah, were they the same size and shape and they were just region-log? Yeah, yeah. Yeah. I did not realize that. Because it was like you have different plugs for your electronic. Oh, okay.
Starting point is 00:21:56 It had something to do with the whatever. circuits. We're well out of our depths. We need Benjamin Franklin in here to explain electricity. Oh, my God. He would, too. Just let me get my glasses. Okay, bad.
Starting point is 00:22:15 Oh, God, who invited this nerd? So you came down here, you went to university. You are now full-time geologist. Yes. And what's new in rocks. Yeah, tell us what's rocking in rocks. Oh, the same as it ever was. That's the nice thing about geology.
Starting point is 00:22:32 It's really not much of a formation science. The cutting edge, we discovered plate tectonics in the 70s, and that was a big wow. That was only in the 70s. Yeah, it was very recent. We were like creationists until like 100 years ago. So what did, plate tectonics are like earthquakes and stuff? Yeah, earthquakes and stuff. So what do they think was happening before?
Starting point is 00:22:53 Yeah, not enough virgins in the volcano. Okay. Angered the sky god. Sky gods, yeah, a series of lacking sacrifices. It's, uh, uh, well, so yeah, what, how do we discover that then? Oh, there was a few different theories. I'm, I can't quite remember all of them, but there was all the way from like heat shrinkage of the earth was making things like buckle against each other to form mountains. Uh, there's a few other.
Starting point is 00:23:20 A lot of the geology theories up until like the 1900s were very biblical and, and creationist based. Like the Grand Canyon was done in a day in the great. flood. Right. There was a, there was a lot of, like, drawing a target around where the dart landed on creationist geology,
Starting point is 00:23:37 but. That's cool. Yeah. Let's go back. Yeah, yeah. Simpler time, really. Yeah. There was one book that knew everything and you just kind of made it fit.
Starting point is 00:23:48 Yeah. Because, like, my dad is a geologist and growing up, we had like, yeah, my dad's a geologist. We're all, we're all. Everyone's dads are geologists.
Starting point is 00:23:57 He had, like, drawing of all the different what do you call it like layers of the inside the planet how do we know those? Oh, that's earthquake actually earthquakes. The answer this time is earthquakes.
Starting point is 00:24:12 Grail? Have you ever talked to your dad? I'm sure I pretended that I knew I was listening to the answer but he's going to hear this. He's going to talk to you would play teutonics every day.
Starting point is 00:24:30 We don't take grace. We talk about pleat tonics before every meal. But it's through volcanoes? Earthquakes. No, like... The way that waves
Starting point is 00:24:41 propagate through different densities. And we can detect over a large area how, what that angle of deflection was and calculate what the density was. So that's how we know there are different. There you go.
Starting point is 00:24:52 Oh, are there like... And when Cherry Lee Lewis was like a whole lot of shake and go out. Yeah, yeah. You couldn't play that on the radio because that was about His dad was a geologist He fought hard
Starting point is 00:25:02 Are there people Because there's like Storm chasers Are there people earthquake chasers? Yeah I know there's volcano people that like Vulcanologists Volcanologists
Starting point is 00:25:17 Like go around and hang out near Are there earthquake Not really Those are a lot less predictable Even volcanoes aren't super predictable I remember my final year In field school We went to Ecuador, which is very volcanically active,
Starting point is 00:25:31 and we wanted to hike into, like, a volcano outside of the capital. And when we were walking down into it, there was a plaque on a boulder next to the trail. It was in Spanish, and my Spanish wasn't very good. So I asked my professor what it said, and he said, oh, that's a plaque commemorating the seven people that were killed on this trail after an eruption, like three years ago. To this day. And I'm like, did they leave space on it for more?
Starting point is 00:25:55 because the plaque will melt. We'll just reform it. Yeah, because I watched a documentary about a couple, and that's what they did. They went to like volcanoes. It's like a National Geographic documentary. Yeah. And that was their thing. What's it called Dante's Peak?
Starting point is 00:26:13 Might have been. Wait, it was Pierce Brosnan? Which one was he in? Was Ian Volta? Yeah, that was definitely Dante. Do you love those movies? I love Dante's Pete. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:26:23 Yeah, it's great. You like it better than Volcano? Does anyone remember volcano? Did it have Tea Leone in it? That was the Tommy Lee Jones one, right? Where it's in L.A. Now, Taya Leone was in The Ugly Truth. Ah, that's the one.
Starting point is 00:26:36 Another prominent volcano movie. Is the one, it takes place in L.A. and they use fire hoses? Yes, that's a Tommy, that's Volcano. That's a Tommy Lee Jones one. And is that, that's a load of BS, right? That's the worst volcano movie ever made in terms of accuracy. What is the top 50? The top 49 are Dante speak.
Starting point is 00:26:55 Yeah. Joe versus the... The... Joe versus. Because the two, the two space rock movies are... Deep Impact and Armagedon. Deep Impact. But does anyone remember Deep Impact? No. We just remember Erasmith.
Starting point is 00:27:12 Yeah, that's true. Sold that movie. Sold the hell out of that movie. Well, I think Ben Affleck and some Animal Crackers had some something to do with that. Yeah. Yeah, a movie that I hadn't seen since, maybe since I saw it in the theater, I was watching a week ago, Con Air. I feel like that was of that vintage. A hundred percent. You watched face off a few weeks ago as well.
Starting point is 00:27:40 Yeah. You're going through a cage kick. Page kick? Look, if there's cage around, you know I'm going to watch it. It's not a kick. It's a lifelong affinity. If there's a cage, Graham will be trapped in it. That's right.
Starting point is 00:27:51 I'm in the Nick Dick, the Cage. Cage. but yeah it had a it had like a famous song in it was the equivalent of i don't know con air yeah was it like faith hill faith hill oh it was still the one no no it's a song that maybe isn't it might be a cover that she did um but it's uh if you guys haven't seen connor have you seen connor Have you seen Conair? Oh, yeah. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:28:21 What's your memory of it? Him coming out of the plane and like the breeze on his face and his weird wispy hair. It was How do I live? How do I live without you? And I think it's only maybe in the credits. But the music video loaded with Conair content. I miss music videos that were just snippets of the movie the song was written for. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:28:44 Like the singer occasionally standing in front of the spotlight. Because they don't barely make music videos anymore. No, yeah. So why would they put clips from Batman Forever? Yeah, like for sure I'd watch. Yeah, that would be a video I was Jonzing for, you know, seal. So I can see some Batman material. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:29:06 Yeah, but I feel like, yeah, maybe that era is over. Yeah. I mean, fans are probably doing fan edits of different songs from soundtracks. I can't. What's the last song? It was like a huge song off a soundtrack. Oh, I mean that Billy Elish one from Barbie.
Starting point is 00:29:22 Oh, fair. Yeah. I think I won the Academy Award, didn't it? It may have won an Academy Award. I think she also won for a James Bond. Yep. One she did. She's won two Oscars?
Starting point is 00:29:31 Yeah. I just learned that recently, too. I had no idea. No. And the only other ones I can think of are the James Bond ones. Yeah. Those are, I feel like those are cheating. Because those are very, like, everyone's looking forward to what the new James Bond song is
Starting point is 00:29:45 going to sound like. There's a really good. I think it was on prime. There was a good James Bond music documentary. Oh, cool. Yeah. I don't know what I'm watching tonight. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:29:55 Pawn air. Yeah. Conair. Who's the guy with the plane who's got? It's full of criminals. Conner. James Bond style of these logs. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:30:14 Now, somebody take that. They're cheese. They're eating into a video. They're going around, and their name is Twister. Yeah. Bring it back. Yeah. So, and then you started doing comedy, because we did comedy together at the comedy mix.
Starting point is 00:30:34 So that was a long time ago. Yes, it's, yes. Yeah. And you had a bit, your closing bit was a superhero. I can't remember how it went, but it was like super. You had like flip chart of superheroes. Yeah, it was a cover. of alphabet aerobics, except I replaced every letter lyric with a superhero.
Starting point is 00:30:53 Yeah. And you would have a, like, a flip chart? Yeah. Yeah, yeah, yeah, like to show the had a drawing of the face of every hero. So you had to bring that with you everywhere? Yeah, it was a little binder. It was printed on cardstock. Okay.
Starting point is 00:31:05 Like, I was just worried that like, what if one rips? Oh, no. Because I'd be closer. That song goes so fast. You've got to be turning pages. Yeah, that was cardstock. I started doing that bit with like loose sheets. I did that maybe twice.
Starting point is 00:31:18 That was chaos. It was everywhere. Lose sheets sounds like me when I don't make my bed. Loose sheets is like with a chamber of lazy chamber made. Yeah. And loose sheets sink. Damn it. Would you get a beat?
Starting point is 00:31:35 Or would you like, I would give them like the karaoke track to alphabet aerobics and then play it there. It was very, very fun, like musical closer bit because nothing gets an audience going like a song they know being done in a different way. Yeah. I try that, but the audience is kept... We only know chemical calisthetics. Because that, when I started out, the, any headline had to have a big closer.
Starting point is 00:32:02 So that was the last time I remembered, like, somebody having, like, a, like, here we go. Here's the end of the show. We're doing the closer. And then after this, there's no doubt the show is done. Yeah, you may leave. Yeah, there's no, like, last laugh and then just good night. Like, it was like, yeah. I think, yeah, I think maybe yours was the last.
Starting point is 00:32:20 That's a good point, yeah. It's, it was a really clean, definitive conclusion. Oh, God, I remember a few comedians. I don't remember their closures, though, but I remember, like, Dwight Slade. Dwight Slade had a big one. Had a big, like, musical cue. He was on, he was dials on the radio. Oh, that's right.
Starting point is 00:32:36 Yeah. And then there was one guy who his whole thing was taking bits of songs and kind of making a script out of it. Oh, yeah. about a breakup or something like that. So it would be like, how do I live? And then, you know, like it was that kind of thing. And then Tom Wilson, who played Biff and Back to the Future, had a song about.
Starting point is 00:32:56 Oh, yeah, about being asked about that question. Yeah. And like, did you ever have it where that didn't work? And then you were like, oh, no, no, I don't have a closer. I think every comedian is like. But it's just such an elaborate piece to be like, eh, well, anyway, he's getting back in. You ever take the bus? What else?
Starting point is 00:33:21 Well, I know, but like, I think a musical closer is pretty Yeah. Pretty definitive. Definitive, like, you know, you're going to get an applause break. Yeah, yeah, yeah. So, it was an easy way.
Starting point is 00:33:32 Work that into the closing applause break. Yeah, exactly. And I made, when that was my, I'm not a musical person at all. So when I first did that bit, and it's a big musical closing number, so I got a big applause break. I was like, is this how it is to be a musician?
Starting point is 00:33:45 they have to clap, this is so much easier. It's true, yeah. People always applause. Even if they don't like the musician, they will get a tepid, polite clap. In comedy, if they even kind of don't like you, dead silence. Yeah. Yeah, they don't feel the compulsion to clap,
Starting point is 00:34:01 even though the host are like, come on, everybody. Give it up, yeah, one more time. One more time. Give it up for, that's my favorite is give it up for yourself. Come on now. I don't need you to do that. I can do that at all. Give it up for yourself.
Starting point is 00:34:14 I'm just going to put the air conditioning. It started to hit. Summer's over, they say. Yeah. Why did I wear a hoodie? I should just worn just the shell. What was I thinking? Yeah.
Starting point is 00:34:27 It's too worn for the hoodie. Yeah. No, I'm just the shell right now. Yeah. Yeah. You're somebody, you're regular on the debaters, and I've seen you dress like Sam Neal's firm of Jurassic Park more than once. That's what I buy.
Starting point is 00:34:40 I insist that any of the debater themes need to be Samuel clothing themed. That's been my rider. You have the hat? Yep. You've got the scarf. Yep. You've got a jacket with a lot of, or vest with a lot of pockets in it. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:34:54 And like brown khakiish pants is an essential. Is this what you wear on digs? Yeah, you've been pretty much. Yeah. It's a gentlemanly look. Yeah, it is. It's a gentlemanly outside look. Like formal, but you go camping.
Starting point is 00:35:07 Yeah. Are you a camper? Yeah. Okay. So you can't get away from these rocks. I really can't. They're everywhere. They follow me on my hobbies
Starting point is 00:35:16 What's, um, like a, what's your favorite rock? Yeah. Big pumice fan. Pumice. Yeah. Because it floats. It floats. Yeah, you can, is that the one you, you, you, you, you.
Starting point is 00:35:32 It's for your feet, too. Yeah, yeah, your dead skin on your feet. Yeah, yeah, yeah. The dead skin stone is a worse way to put it. Yes. Yeah. Wow. It's altered my favorite.
Starting point is 00:35:41 Was not expecting pumice. Yeah. Rubies, emeralds. Those are the basic bitch minerals. Right, yeah. No, these diamonds are over, right? Yeah, oh yeah, yeah, yeah. Diamonds have always been a scam, like, from the outset.
Starting point is 00:35:57 Oh, really? Oh, yeah, yeah. They were a marketing ploy by De Beers back in the 30s. The whole spend three months salary on diamonds was from their marketing department. De Beers. Yeah, De Beers. Does. But, like, weren't I in the ancient society?
Starting point is 00:36:12 Didn't they, like, go nuts for diamonds? For gems. They couldn't give a shit if it was a diamond. If it was a spark, they love sparkly rocks. Right. But, like, they wouldn't have cared. Like, a ruby versus a diamond rubies, like, got color and everything. So a diamond is just one thing.
Starting point is 00:36:29 Like, it doesn't come in variety. It's just diamond. It can have, like, different colors or something. That usually means that it's got inclusions in it. And then they market it. And inclusions, we know inclusions. Yeah, exactly. Different.
Starting point is 00:36:42 chemistry, minorly different chemistry. Oh, yeah, yeah, yeah. To make it colored. And then they'll rebrand it to be better occasionally. Because a while ago, they had this thing called canary diamonds, and everybody needed a canary diamond for their wedding ring. And it was this yellow diamond, and it showed the extent of your love and how unique your partner was. Me hiding my wedding ring now because I'm embarrassed.
Starting point is 00:37:02 Yeah, exactly. Well, the year before, they were canary diamonds, they were shitty brown diamonds and they were worth nothing. That was terrible marketing. Yeah. Yeah, that came up with that one. shitty brown You don't get a shitty brown
Starting point is 00:37:14 Diamond For your love Until you love How much you hate her With a shitty brown diamond You know what my favorite stone is Out of Danium Actually forget
Starting point is 00:37:25 What that's made out of Is it a goo? No it's some sort of It's a mineral It's a Oh what are the Those aren't called Are they called the diamonds
Starting point is 00:37:35 The ones that he puts in the glove Oh the infinity stones Yeah Yeah yeah Okay See he knew the difference He knew gems were better Yeah.
Starting point is 00:37:42 Wow. That's why he's Thanos. Yeah. Not everyone gets to be that. Yeah. It's, uh, are you a super guy? Super hero? Are you super guy?
Starting point is 00:37:49 I'm a super duper. Are you super duper? I'm a super duper. His closer was a, I know, but like I, I, I, I don't want to assume. Yeah. No, fair enough. Uh, uh, super guy. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:37:58 Uh, not quite duper certified just yet, but I'd say superhero fan for sure. What's your, like, what's your kind of, are you so excited for Doomsday? I don't know why so much of my Instagram. Well, let me tell you. My Instagram feed seems to think that that's all I care about is that Avengers Doomsday. It's about Doomsday. How many Avengers has there been? In the 20s or something?
Starting point is 00:38:22 No. With the MCU. All the MCU, fair. I have no idea. After the Thanos thing, I lost stamina. I think there was four Avengers movies. And then that wrapped up neatly. And it was fine.
Starting point is 00:38:36 Everybody was like, well, let's go home. This is good. We'll have some Spider-Man and some Batman. We've all made enough money. Yeah, yeah, yeah. Like, we don't need to do this anymore. We'll shut it down. We're going to go back to making small feature comedies.
Starting point is 00:38:47 Exactly. We'll get Nate Burgatsy in a couple of films. He figures out his voice, you know? But, like, are you interested in that? Because I feel like I've been pummeled with it. And that's part of the problem because this might have been interesting because it's always fun to see who is going to be on it, right? Yeah.
Starting point is 00:39:10 That's part of it. It's going to go on and see who's the secret reveal. And then, like, two years ago when they first announced this movie, they also released an entire list of everybody that was going to be in which actor was going to be played by. So that took all the fun out of it for me. And I felt like such a desperate, like, look at all the stuff we're going to have. Please come. Oh, my God.
Starting point is 00:39:26 We're so in the red on this. Yeah, we'll give you any, whatever thing you want. All the things. Old Professor X, he's in there. You want a different old? Do you want him? Do you want Nate Bargaut? He's the breadwinner.
Starting point is 00:39:39 Anything for your childhood? The Red Wing There's the Wolverine. There's the Scorpion. Did you see the new Spider-Man? I did. Those ones have been consistently great. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:39:57 It's like the one I will make time for because they've been very fun. But like, I got to get out of this algorithm. I got to, how do you change the direction on your algorithm? I have no idea. I've been looking up instructions on how to make a bomb. That seems to help. Okay. really changes your suggestions.
Starting point is 00:40:13 With all your knowledge about rocks and stuff, you'd probably make a bomb. It's one of our classes in the undergrad. It's a MacGyver bomb from things you'd find around your campsite. Now blow up this warehouse. Do you guys remember when your teens that somebody had the anarchist cookbook? Anarchist cookbook? I did actually, when I was doing my, when I was in school, I did get a positive ping on that bomb check they do in the airport.
Starting point is 00:40:42 Like when they wipe your, but they take that little tissue and then wipe your hands with it and put it in a thing. Positive ping. Positive ping. I had never had that happen before. And from the staff's reaction to it, I don't think he'd ever seen a positive one either, like outside of training.
Starting point is 00:40:57 Was it your chemical bag? I guess like, I'd been, there was like a minerals lab nearby. Oh, yeah. Like maybe some of the residue from that because they would work with like reagents and stuff that I'd guess, might have been looking for.
Starting point is 00:41:10 But the weirdest part about that experience was how accommodating he was to me, the person who had had explosives detected on him. Because it went off. It was like green instead of red because it's usually just red and you go on your day after your random selection. This one turned green and he kind of stared at it for a bit and then looked at me and he's like, is there any reason? Is there a bomb?
Starting point is 00:41:30 You'd have explosives or been around explosives before. And I was like, I can't think of one. And I was like, I work around a minerals lab. Maybe that's it. He's like, yeah, yeah, that's probably it. And then I just got to go to the front of the line. Oh, yeah, cool. If he thinks you got a bomb, be nice to the guy.
Starting point is 00:41:48 You want to be friendly to the guy with the bomb. That's fair. Yeah, that was a good survival instinct. Yeah, that's... What airport? That was why VR. Yeah, they're the best. Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
Starting point is 00:41:57 That might you take anything on. Yeah. That's why they're the coolest. Oh, they got those scanners now that you don't have to take your electronics out of your bag. Oh, man. Dream come true. Way of the future. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:42:09 You just throw those bags on there. You don't take anything out. Yep. I always get flagged for secondary inspection regardless. It always goes down that, you know, where all the main ones are coming, and then there's one and goes over to the right, and then goes down a separate conveyor belt. That's me. Can't get anywhere without your leader of shampoo.
Starting point is 00:42:25 I don't know what it is. I got a backscratcher in there. Maybe it's the backscratcher? Something is scanning. You travel with a backscratcher? Oh, yeah. Carry on backscratcher. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:42:33 Which is legal. It's legal. But you've consistent. Is it just a claw on a stick? Yeah, it's claw on a stick. Well, what do you call it? Telescopic. Oh, sure.
Starting point is 00:42:46 Yeah. What else is a backscratcher? What are the other categories of backscratcher? I don't know if it's... Like, they would make a big thing, you know, like the King's ivory backscratcher. Well, do they do like an electric one now? Ooh, that'd be nice. That sounds dangerous.
Starting point is 00:43:01 Someone's got a birthday coming up. I mean, that's what would get you pulled over at the airport. I don't know why you're driving through. Yeah, having a car in there, I feel it would be the primary concern. You got any metal on you, sir, or outside surrounding you? The last time I was in line, there was an old guy with a bottle of water, and he was trying to get through it. I was like, you're not going to make it old man. Too much, too much.
Starting point is 00:43:26 The desperate security line is chug. And he was going way too slow. I was like, there's no way, man. You got to throw this out. But in his mind, he was like, I'll get it down to zero. I'll be able to walk through, no problem. He had to throw it out. When we have, in the next few years when the water wars begin, and we're all out of water, fresh water.
Starting point is 00:43:44 I hope they changed the rules around the airport. I don't want to have to throw it out. No, but I'd camp out next to that bin where people would be out of water. Whale barrel. It's going to be worth a lot. Yeah, who's in the Water Wars? Is Spider-Man going to be in that one? Yeah, I'm looking forward to that.
Starting point is 00:44:02 And that's probably the next few years. What's the point of all of these things? of the cartoon comic movies. Living in general. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. In general,
Starting point is 00:44:13 yeah, no, I'm a big fan of them. Yeah. Who's your favorite guy? Gotta be a clomper. Who is those big shoes? His neighbors hate him. Carried three films. Can you believe it?
Starting point is 00:44:31 Yeah. John Void is. That's a lot. He's at Comic-Con with all of them lined up at the table. And John Boyd, everybody. Yeah, also, I get a lot of feeds about Comic-Con things and reveal.
Starting point is 00:44:50 But I don't click on any of them. So when is the algorithm going to back off? No, yeah, it's just you're locked in now. Yeah. What do you click on? Look, sometimes there'll be a tiny clip of the Hulk I want to see. You know, a clip from a movie where he hulks out. We'll love it.
Starting point is 00:45:07 Nice. Best moment. Clomper smash. Clomper clump. Who's number one, comic book character-wise? For me, Batman. That was a big Batman. Okay.
Starting point is 00:45:21 So not even the Avengers universe. Not any of that. It hasn't been faring super well in terms of films over the last while for Batman. Because of... Inconsistency? There's the Dark Night trilogy, which was a blast. Yeah. Had a lot of fun.
Starting point is 00:45:37 No, we had a lot of fun there. And then there was a long gap. And then Snyder came along. I don't think there was a long gap. No, not a long enough gap. Now when there's profit to be made in Hollywood. I don't think any of these movies. There's hardly a moment to pause.
Starting point is 00:45:53 Yes. Yeah, there's like a story that when Christopher Nolan heard they were making a new Batman, he said he stared into space for like five minutes. Like, didn't I just? Didn't I? Didn't I just finished? We're doing this again? We did it.
Starting point is 00:46:06 You're doing, what? Yeah. How dare you? Yeah. And then they had the Batman with Pat and Sin. Was that good? That one's, I really enjoyed that one. I thought that one.
Starting point is 00:46:14 I like him. But the problem is they're making a sequel, which keeps getting delayed. And it's going to be, I don't know when it's supposed to be coming out, but it's going to be like six years between the first one and the next one. Well, according to my algorithm, the bad guy's going to be Two-Face. Ooh. Ready for that. Okay. A unique choice.
Starting point is 00:46:32 Yeah, it's, just bring the Joker. He's the guy everybody cares about. We're all dancing around. Who's going to be there? Let's give Jared Leto another shot of the joke. Right? All we do, oh, we do,
Starting point is 00:46:43 like, he deserves more shots. Yeah. Yeah. Well, I think he's had so few. I think he's probably had, I feel like the Master of the Universe, that may be the last horror for Jared Lado. You're a Skeletor?
Starting point is 00:46:54 He was Skeletor, and it literally could have been any actor in any voice recording booth. Yeah. Like, he doesn't, he just sounds like a guy whose voice has been modulated. Did you see it? No, I didn't.
Starting point is 00:47:05 I was when, did they, like, nah. No, that's the thing. They didn't do the classic. They didn't make him do anything. You don't make Jared Letto do anything. I'm going to see if he has any upcoming projects.
Starting point is 00:47:16 They just have like a gravely, barely bad guy kind of filter. Yeah, it's just like it literally could have been anybody. Yeah, that's disappointing. It's got a, you know, echoey effect on his voice. Yeah. It doesn't seem to have upcoming project, although. To the surprise of all. IMDB is very difficult to.
Starting point is 00:47:36 navigate more and more. It's true. It really wants you to sign up for pro. IMDB Plus. Yeah. But like, yeah, he's cooked. He's chopped. No, he's fat.
Starting point is 00:47:49 He'll be back. Oh, good. He's in, right now he's just out in the desert. And he'll come back after the next national travel. Yeah. Hey, what's going on? What's going on, you guys? Why's everyone so somber?
Starting point is 00:48:04 Dave, what's going on with you? Oh, you know, I mean. Uh, well, summer's over. The kids are almost back to school. Uh, we, um, we had that lightning storm. Uh, one thing that's going on with me is my dogs are, uh, uh, crazy. Yes. Um, one of them, I've, uh, never had a dog that actually did this.
Starting point is 00:48:26 When my old dog was a puppy, we used to always like, whenever there was like a cat on TV, we would be like, hey, check it out, a cat on TV. Yeah. And, um, We can't. We got no reaction. But my dog, Irma, any animal on TV, she freaks out at. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:48:44 This is classic. So she loves, well, no, she hates them all. She, horses, she can't stand horses. Dogs are on TV all the time. I wake up in the morning. I just turn the TV on the news. And it's, if there's ever a story about animals, I always immediately just press up on the remote control, which takes me to the next channel up, which in the morning is always showing Hudson
Starting point is 00:49:05 and Rex a show about a German Shepherd who solves crimes. And isn't it like super popular? It's on all the time. Like on its 10th season or something like that. I don't know. Isn't a German Shepherd? As soon as I said that, I was like, wait, isn't the... That's the classic crime solving dog.
Starting point is 00:49:24 Yeah, no, it's a German Shepherd. And it's how many episodes are we at for Hudson and Rex? It's been on for how many seasons? It's IMDB. It's Canadian, right? It's Canadian. Oh, yeah.
Starting point is 00:49:39 Production. Like, what was it once? What was the one called Susan Smith or whatever? That's who Thomas FBI? FBI. About the deaf lady. You remember this? No.
Starting point is 00:49:50 She was a cop. Did she also have a dog? Yeah. She needed a hearing your dog. She would solve crimes. But it was called FBI, but her eyes worked fine. Maybe. That was like I-E-Y-E
Starting point is 00:50:04 FBI About a deaf FBI Agent We're looking at Somebody didn't read very far Into the summary I got it And we're looking at eight seasons
Starting point is 00:50:16 Eight seasons Eight Cs Wow A hundred and twenty-two episodes It's shot in Newfoundland I wonder if If they started shooting Immediately after
Starting point is 00:50:24 Republic of Doyle ended They would have had to get all the crews Yeah You know Is it the same guy Is it No this is a dog No, it stars John Reardon.
Starting point is 00:50:37 John Reardon. Because I feel like there was another show that starred Republic of Doyle guy. And occasionally it would have a Republic of Doyle guy and then occasionally the guy from that Newfoundland band. Spirit of the West. No. Oh, opposite. Oh, damn. What's a Natsmada, Grape C.
Starting point is 00:50:59 Grape C. Not Samadro at all. I feel like it would have got there eventually. Anyway, so the other day I turned on the TV at 6.30 in the morning. Sat down with my coffee, my dog next to me. And the first words out of the anchor's mouth were, well, the results are in for Fat Marmot Week. And I just scrambled to change to him.
Starting point is 00:51:26 Apparently in Colorado, they did the first annual Fat Barmit Week, where they feed a marmot? No, they just like tried to find the fattest marmot. Huh. It's hard on the old self-esteem if everybody's just looking, they're just looking at your figure,
Starting point is 00:51:42 you know? There's a person or a marmot. Is there not a person? I try doing it as fit marmotent week, but that didn't last long. Yeah. Prominantly not very fit creatures. I don't know anything about marmits.
Starting point is 00:51:54 Couldn't conjure one in my mind if I had to. I know there's a fattest. Yeah? Now I do. Fat marmit week. Let's see who wanted. Who was? number one.
Starting point is 00:52:01 Did they have names? Do they name and shame the fattest marmot? Is it? Oh, now I'm dying to know what the name of the the marmon is he won. I don't want video. I want images. Because people in the States may not know.
Starting point is 00:52:16 You guys have, what's the gopher that they have for? Groundhog Day. Groundhog Day. There's is called. It's a type of, it's not a name. Oh. Because we've got Wiredton. Tony Paul?
Starting point is 00:52:27 Punks of Tony Phil. Phil. Yeah. And we had Wiredon Willie. He passed away last year, I think. There are thousands of them. Yeah. Every two-bit town has their own groundhog.
Starting point is 00:52:39 The winner was Dawn. Dawn the fat Marmot. The A-W-N. Yeah. It's pretty fat. Yeah. But I don't know from a skinny marmot. I don't know.
Starting point is 00:52:48 I don't have a marmot reference. Yeah. The semi-finalists were Dan's hat, Don, Stonehenge, and the letter G. They named them like race horses. Yeah. And then who does it say what they won? On an all expensive paid trip. I don't know.
Starting point is 00:53:08 Wash your dryer set. When you do get you win in all expenses paid, you have to keep receipts and then you get reimbursed. All expenses reimbursed trip to Costa Rica. Because you don't know what kind of things I'm going to get into. Yeah. I think they're like, here's a thousand dollars for the week or something. Yeah. Do whatever fits in that thousand dollars.
Starting point is 00:53:27 Like we're paying for your hotel all. already. We're getting you tickets to Gwen Stefati live. You're getting a meet and greet session with Gwen Stefani. The rest is up to you. And then you have spending money. Yeah. But like, sounds rad. But you can, you can opt to like, I'm going to be very Spartan on this. I'm going to buy, I'm just going to eat rice. I'm bringing my rice maker with me. I'm going to sell my meat and greet. Save your per diem. Yeah. Rent my hotel. Sub let my hotel room. Nice. Have either of you guys ever been to a meet and greet?
Starting point is 00:54:04 With, I did with metric. Oh, okay. What was that like? They're very cool. Yeah, it was very informal. I always expected a meet and greet with like a band or something to be like, all right, you stand in line and you go in and you don't look them in the eye and don't mention brown M&Ms and continue. You know, they get heated.
Starting point is 00:54:22 So I thought it would be really formal, but they were just in, it was before their concert, which was at Rogers Arena. Yeah. And then they just brought us into one of like the hockey change rooms. And there was a group of a couple of a dozen of us that got the ticket. She was a big fan, so she got the pre-sales. Ah. And then they just walked in and hung out with everybody.
Starting point is 00:54:40 Like it was a very, they just mingled and made sure everyone had a chance for a photo. And they were super lovely about it. That's nice. Yeah. So my celebrity encounter was a very positive one. Because I feel like that happens with the show, we've all been on the debaters. Steve Patterson often has meet and greets after the show. I just feel like after you've done a show, that's the last thing you want to do is stand around.
Starting point is 00:55:03 Oh, yeah. I wouldn't do it. Like, no meet and greets. Because it's just like, if it was before or if it was the next day, if it was a separate thing, I'd be like, sure. But I just, I was up there for like two hours. Yeah, fair. Yeah. Oh, yeah.
Starting point is 00:55:18 You know what we didn't mention yet is Graham and I stop podcasting yourself live is coming October 16th. There might still be tickets available. And also, no meet and greetings. No meet and greetings. No, no, no meeting. Don't even ask. He doesn't want to see you. I'm not going to do it.
Starting point is 00:55:34 So that was one thing. The other thing, I told you a few weeks ago, I, like, during the pandemic, I watched this magician's one-man show special called. Oh, yeah, yeah. In and of itself. Derek Delgado. Have you seen it? No.
Starting point is 00:55:50 It's great. Oh, nice. And when I watched it in 2020, I, like, you know, I was, I thought it was amazing. and I cried, and there's like a few points where, you know, you might cry. And so I was like, I want to watch it again. See if it will make me cry again. And so I did. And I told you last week we went to the water slides.
Starting point is 00:56:15 Yes. I forgot to say that I, so I watched this special. And I was watching it saying, well, will this make me cry again? I really liked it. but, you know, it didn't quite hit. There were some moments where I was like, ah, yeah, that's good, but it didn't, it didn't bring me to tears. Okay.
Starting point is 00:56:35 And then I was at the water slides with Abby and we were in line and I was telling her about it. And she was like, well, what was the stuff that made you cry the first time? And I was like, well, there's this one part where he like shows these letters to these people. And it's just a random, like, they get pulled out of the audience. They don't know what letter they're about to read. And then this one woman starts reading the, letter and it's from her dad and then as I'm retelling it, like, oh God, now I'm at least if you cry in the water park, no one can see your tears.
Starting point is 00:57:08 Yeah, that was true. Cry all the way down the slide. So it didn't make me cry watching it, but retelling what was sad about it was like, I couldn't get through it. My voice was shaking. I should watch. Is it on Netflix or? It's on YouTube.
Starting point is 00:57:22 It's on YouTube. I can't get into that because you know what? You just want to show me doomsday clips. I don't even like you to watch anything else. No, exactly. Click on and they're like, are you sure? Nah, it's not for you. Yeah, I remember when it came out.
Starting point is 00:57:36 I don't remember anything about it, but I remember being like a big deal because it was during the pandemic? Yeah. Yeah. Are you a fan of magic at all? Yeah, yeah. Actually, that was my other meet and greet was a pen and teller after she was with that.
Starting point is 00:57:51 Yeah. Because they. What was that? Very cool. It's such a fun audience. And they even do an audience interaction one where you have like a card at deck of cards under your chair and if you follow their directions oh wow they'll be able to guess your card behind it which is very cool oh that's awesome yeah so it was a neat one and i didn't
Starting point is 00:58:06 notice about them they meet their audience after every single show they've ever done they stand out in the lobby and just hang out with people yeah i uh saw the one i was about 11 or 12 and their last bit was just so much fake blood and so like on the way out they were signing um they had like Sharpies and they signed my ticket and they rubbed fake blood all over. Amazing. And so I think that was the whole, everyone got a bloody souvenir. That's great. And all the questions were like, hey, what's that made it?
Starting point is 00:58:37 What's the blood made out of corn syrup? Famously the best blood. Have you ever watched the Fool Me? They're Foolless. Yeah. Yeah, it's another one I really enjoy. It's a magician will come on and try to make it so that they can't figure out how it's done. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:58:54 I just take them at the word when they say I figure out how it's done. They don't tell you how it's like. Oh, yeah. They go, we know how you did that. They have to be like coy because they can't just give away this magician's entire act on the table. You're just taking their word on it that they know because 100% of the time I'd be like, yeah, I know. I'll just cheat. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:59:11 Can't tell you how. Is there a part where they take them aside and they're like, is there, you have a hidden spring? You have a spring in your. I guess spring. Yeah. You always guess spring. Let me guess. Mm.
Starting point is 00:59:26 That, uh, fake glass. That was a big block. Smoke and or mirrors? Yeah. Is there a machine underneath that replicates you and then the real version of you dies? You have to kill off of them, drown the real version of yourself. Surprisingly common. I watched, because magic is a big part of America's Got Talent.
Starting point is 00:59:46 It's a gathering. It really is. And there was a magician who did this thing where he told, like, his life story using cards. and, you know, a card was signed somewhere in the deck or something like that. And he was like, you know, it took me four years and he brings out a four and like that kind of thing. And then I met these people came clean, whatever. I went to, I saw Dr. X and now I'm boobless. He was a calculator magician.
Starting point is 01:00:11 But he did the whole thing. And they were really wowed by it. And I was like, that sucked. I didn't know that that sucked. Just fling out an order of cards. Yeah. I was like, I could do it. I could do that with anything.
Starting point is 01:00:24 Yeah. Yeah, America's Got Talent is a real, like, I don't know what I want to say. But it's like, it's very wholesome. It's very wholesome. And the things that make it through are you're like, yeah, sure. Yeah, like, I love watching. I love how schmaltzy it is. You know.
Starting point is 01:00:44 Is the Grand Prize still like you get a residency in Vegas? And if you're not Grand Prize, you end up getting bundled with other acts and you tour as America's got talent. Oh, it's like a live show. Yeah. They have one in Vegas that's just contestants from it. Yeah, because like a lot of the acts seem like, yeah, that was great, but I don't want 90 minutes of it. 90 minutes of a guy's falling in a sword.
Starting point is 01:01:08 Yeah. A lot of it is like, like, uh, you go to Granville Island and there's all those buskers. I, I, I will tolerate you the time it takes you to walk by. I'll do a walk by feeling. They really stall for time. Those buskers. They'll get a crowd around them and then, oh, let's bring a kid to interact with me. But I'm not actually going to do my thing yet.
Starting point is 01:01:33 But you know, it's great. Tax-free. Tax-free. That's true. Money they make. Uncle Sam's not getting apart of it. Well, I don't know because they must use tap now. So there is like a paper trail.
Starting point is 01:01:44 Oh, fair enough. Yeah. Oh, the government got us again. Yeah. I went, yeah, it's, I never have cash. I should just carry it around because there's always. some occasion that calls for cash, but then I never had. What was your most recent cash occasion?
Starting point is 01:01:59 I can't think about it. Last night. Really? I went and saw live music. And at the intermission, a guy came around for tips. The entry fee was on your bill. Okay. But then he came around for tips.
Starting point is 01:02:12 I got nothing to tip you with, bro. Yeah. I had, uh, I went to the wave pool at Richmond, water mania. Yeah. Yesterday. We're trying to cram the last bits of summer. You had some crying to do. Yeah.
Starting point is 01:02:23 I was like, I just watched Steel Magnolia in the car on the way of. And I, yeah, a guy came up to me in the locker room and said, hey, did you have four quarters? For the lock? For the locker. Yeah. Some public pools, you get your quarterback when you, after you take your key out. Yeah. And the others, they keep it.
Starting point is 01:02:52 Did they keep it at this one? Keep it at this one. So this guy. What is the hand? I'm going to the guy going. Do they still have the thing where it just comes with like a pin or something that you just, yeah, feel like that was some sort of sanitary. Do they still do the key attached to the sharpest pin in the world to give to children? Yeah, yeah.
Starting point is 01:03:08 Yeah. Well, it's a safety pin, though. Yeah. Well, only when it's used properly. Not in my child hands. It was an unsafe pen for a nine-year-old Gavin. Was there any such thing? in the Yukon, a wave pool,
Starting point is 01:03:24 a water slide? We had for the longest time it was just an outdoor pool that they built an enclosure around and called an indoor pool. Okay. Which came with all the problems that anyone could assume that entailed. Go ahead. You can list them.
Starting point is 01:03:40 Moisture, I assume. I don't know. I'm out of my depth. Much like the pool. We're out of our depth here at the pool with the lid on it. And then they finally for the 2010
Starting point is 01:03:53 Olympics Whitehorse hosted The Whitehorse hosted The Olympics Now we hosted Canada Games in like 2003 or four or something like that
Starting point is 01:04:01 And then we had to build a better pool And then we got a Water Slide and that was big news That's huge for the town Yeah Canada Games
Starting point is 01:04:07 Waterslide Championships Yeah exactly We had to be League quality Which most aren't They don't They don't tell you that
Starting point is 01:04:14 It's this is The first time I'm hearing That there's the Such thing as the Canada Games Yeah Right
Starting point is 01:04:18 Yeah And then there's the Commonwealth In those games My friend in high school, he just took up fencing and within a year he was going to the Canada game. Wow. Yeah. Not a lot of competition on the team.
Starting point is 01:04:34 I think it's like a great sport to get into because within a year you can go take on people from other provinces. There's also like the firemen games or the fire games. Yeah. Yeah. Because I was in some town that was hosting it. And that was like the thing in town. And every flag on the main street was a welcome fireman. Yeah.
Starting point is 01:04:58 Oh, boy, think of how many muscles. This wasn't a sports category per se. But there was an event when I was growing up that one of the miners threw outside of Dawson City called Favron's Thunderfest. Yeah. And it was a fundraiser for like the local plaster miners. and he would just have plaster miners? Placer, sorry, gold miners. Oh, okay.
Starting point is 01:05:21 It's a common misconception. Yeah, yeah. A lot of pottery up north. People don't know that. We're making drywall. This is where we got all your chip rock. Drywall and the Venus de Milo. Big fans.
Starting point is 01:05:34 Which was marble, I think. Could have been. Yeah, not a clay. Good luck getting a squeeze of those. Yeah, I'd like to change my answer of a favorite rock, marble. Marble. Yeah, yeah. Yeah, so it was an annual party with this minor hosted, and in one of his old pits, which is basically like a big gravel flat parking lot, he'd spend the year collecting old wrecks, like donated vehicles, and scatter them amongst this pit.
Starting point is 01:06:02 And then part of the fundraiser was people could bid on these wrecks, and if you won your bid, all the money went to the donation, and you got the right and opportunity to destroy that vehicle with a piece of mining equipment of your choice. Oh, cool. I'd use a pickax. Everyone else is using big machines. I just use my know-house. Just dismantle it with like a wrench. Smash it with a gold panning pan. Have you, what's the, have you did the sourtoe?
Starting point is 01:06:37 Yeah. Yep. Did the sourtoe. Me as well. Oh, you did it. Oh, right on. Do you do it every time you go? No, so that's a one-timer.
Starting point is 01:06:45 It doesn't add much for taste. It's a, some kind of moonshine or something. It can be any liquor of your choice. Oh, so the toe travels. The toe travels. Oh, and they put it in the glass? Yes.
Starting point is 01:06:57 Oh, I thought it was in a bottle and it was. No, yeah, but you have to, it has to touch your lips. Yeah. They put an old frostbitten toe. Yeah. In, uh, in whatever, in the glass. And then you, it touches, yeah. Yeah.
Starting point is 01:07:11 Drink it fast or drink it slow, but your lips must touch the toe. There you go. They tell you. And it's an old captain guy. Yes. It brings you through that. Old paddle boat captain. He sits at the back of the bar.
Starting point is 01:07:20 Yeah. And it's been swallowed a few times. Yes. They had to keep raising the fee because it used to be like a $500 fee and people would come in after like a summer in the mines with a big paycheck and would just walk in there confidently slam it down. Is it a five and a half a table? It's whatever's available beggars can't be choosers when it comes to a piece of bodies. Yeah. I feel like a pinky.
Starting point is 01:07:40 I could swallow a pinky. Yeah. Big toe. Big toe. That's what I imagine. And apparently there are people who donate their frostbitten toes to the bar. So they have extras. I can't imagine how else they would get them.
Starting point is 01:07:55 I feel like that's something that would need to explain. Yeah. If there's a saw situation in town, our most famous resident, the Mr. Jigsaw. There was a marketing campaign a few years ago that was shut down very quickly for reasons that will become quite obvious. where I think it was the Yukon's airline was like trying to promote the Yukon, promote tourism and promote the Saratow cocktail. So they ran a contest of send in pictures of your feet.
Starting point is 01:08:26 Great start. And we'll send you an X-Ball. I was like, I didn't even think of who ran this contest. What was his name? Chinks. Tricks. Tricks. Tricks.
Starting point is 01:08:41 That was it. Yeah. So, yeah, send us pictures of your feet. And then there'll be, I can't remember if it was like by vote or what their idea was. And whoever, the winning pair of feet got free tickets and like an all expenses reimbursed trip to Dawson City to go and have the Saratow cocktail. All expenses paid. We know what that mean. Tax deductible.
Starting point is 01:09:06 But it got shut down quickly and not for the reasons that you would think on how inappropriate of an ask that is. it was because it's apparently legally Oh yeah, that was the other part is if you won, you also signed a commitment that upon your passing you would donate some of your toes to the bar. Yeah, like that would be like a little commit you would make as part of the trip.
Starting point is 01:09:25 Your favorite feet would be on the bar. It's also like not inclusive of people who don't have feet. Yeah, exactly. Also, what kind of creeps coming around to collect? Exactly. Time's up. Yeah, yeah.
Starting point is 01:09:39 50 years or. Open it up. I represent the government of the Yukon And we're here to collect And it turns out It's a bit of a legal quagmire To commit a piece of your corpse For a consumer business
Starting point is 01:09:53 So that got shut down rather quickly Because, you know Not something that I assume comes up very often Yeah Something that apparently is not allowed to do Huh Yeah If you could donate a body part
Starting point is 01:10:05 To a commercial business What would be Depends so much they like my feet I mean, I know you're giving you eyes to Steve, if you wonder. Yeah. I'm giving my heart to the tin man. I guess I would probably give these jugs to the dairy farmers of Canada. That'd be a great commercial.
Starting point is 01:10:23 Yeah. Yeah. I think I want, I'm going to donate my whole head. And you can use it as a bowling ball. You can do whatever you want, and no sex stuff. No sex stuff. Fair. Yeah.
Starting point is 01:10:33 You got to write that in every agreement. Yeah, but you can make it into a puppet. You can throw it out a friend. You can roll it out. Not a sex puppet. Yep. Yeah, you can make a, A puppet that's telling funny sexy jokes
Starting point is 01:10:42 Fine, that's totally fair No, you know what I'm talking about None of that That has to be ironclad Because they'll find loopholes I'd probably give this dump truck ass To the folks at Tonka
Starting point is 01:10:56 And then people could bid on it To destroy people Yeah, yeah Boys, people have been destroying this ass For a long time Graham, what's going on with you? Well, while we're on
Starting point is 01:11:11 on the topic of all things mining and all things rocks, I went to Calgary, Alberta. Oh, yeah. And I made a trip. And all things, Sam Neal. Yeah, I went to the Terrell Museum. Ooh, very fun. Yes, which I had been to when I was a kid.
Starting point is 01:11:25 Now, this is in Drumheller, Alberta, and it is a museum of dinosaurs. And it is just, it's not that far outside of Calgary. It's like an hour drive. And it's in the bad lands. It's where a lot of fossils have been found. The bad lands, is that? Is it a desert?
Starting point is 01:11:43 Is it? Yeah, it's deserty. Yeah. It's a desert that a shootout has happened on. You have to have a six-shooter shootout before a desert can become the badlands. And you can take cover behind a hoodoo. You can hide in the hoodoos, run from the law and the hoodoes. But yeah, it's like, it's completely desert and these kind of, well, what do you, you know what, you've been there, I'm assuming?
Starting point is 01:12:07 Yeah, yeah. What, there's like different colors of layers of colors of layers of colors. on the hill. What is that? That's layers of ground, basically. Which is, which sounds like a very pedantic answer. Layers of ground.
Starting point is 01:12:21 Those layers of ground. But those are, those are sand and dirt and stuff that over time, like a shepherd's pie. Yeah, exactly. Layers of ground beef. Yeah.
Starting point is 01:12:32 Peas. Do you do more than one layer of ground beef in a shepherd's pie? Or is it just one layer? I don't know. Gavin, what do you say? Depends if it's a double. Lazzania, you would definitely do multiple layers.
Starting point is 01:12:42 Yes. Yeah, yeah, yeah, that's fair. It's true. Shepherds pie feels like a one layer. A one layer. I don't know if I ever. Oh, no, I had it as like a school cafeteria. What, Shepard's Pie?
Starting point is 01:12:52 Yeah. I never had like regular at dinner Shepherds pie? No, I don't come from Shepherds. My family's all geologists. It looks just to be one big layer of. That is much less layered than I thought it would be. Yeah. That is just two layers.
Starting point is 01:13:09 You know what? Looks great. Yeah. Great. It just, yeah, okay. So it went to Drumheller, the, you know, shepherd's spy of the world, a lot of layers. I guess it's more lasagna of the world. There's a giant canyon that you go to and take your pictures in front of it called Horseshoe Canyon.
Starting point is 01:13:26 And that was created in one day. Wait, what shape is this canyon? It's a, I was trying to think of another lucky charm shape. A red balloon. Clover shades of red balloon shapes. Stars are there. Yeah, damn. And yeah, it's a cool part of the country.
Starting point is 01:13:43 I don't think there's anywhere else in Canada that's like it. A lot of fossils have been found there. I think it's the biggest dinosaur dig site in the world. And they found, like, complete dinosaurs there. And, like, new species, too. Yeah. And there's like, so it's everything down there, dino crazy. Yeah.
Starting point is 01:14:05 They go down there, there's nothing but dinoes. In Drumheller, which is the town near the Torel Museum. Do the oil people like, because it's a big oil country? Yeah. Do they like dig and find dinosaurs and they're like, damn, undercooked? Put them back. Yeah, they bury it. They buried again.
Starting point is 01:14:29 So like, Drumhaller, it's the cutest. Every business has got kind of a dino twist. Yeah. There's buildings. When was the last time you had gone? Oh, I was probably like. 12 or 13 or something like that. Peak Dino Age.
Starting point is 01:14:44 Yeah. And there's like, there's like statues of raptors on the tops of buildings like tearing up the buildings. It's the best. That's awesome. There's a, uh, I took a bunch of pictures. There was one that was a computer business that was Dino something and it had a funny slogan.
Starting point is 01:14:59 Dino software. And then they have the world's largest, uh, Tyrannosaurus in, in town, which is absolutely gigantic. and you can go, you can climb up it and go into its mouth. Oh boy. Like the Statue of Liberty?
Starting point is 01:15:16 Yeah. It's our version where it's everybody looks towards the dinosaur. I wish you could go into the Statue of Liberty's mouth. All right. Look out its crown.
Starting point is 01:15:26 I was imagining that completely wrong. That's not its teeth. But when I was talking about it, I didn't think that you could go up, but I thought it was just a giant, you know, like, world's largest axe or whatever.
Starting point is 01:15:41 Yeah. But no, you can go up it. It costs like five bucks. Wait, is it real? Is it like a real dinosaur? It is a lot. Yeah. No, it's a fake dinosaur. Okay.
Starting point is 01:15:51 Well, because they, I, they also have real dinosaurs. They also have real dinosaurs. No, this is a fake dinosaur. Oh, okay. Trail Museum is just a museum of statues. And they've got to figure it out because usually if you go to an attraction, you exit through the gift shop, this.
Starting point is 01:16:05 You got to enter through the gift shop. And exit through the gift shop. Oh, yeah, yeah, yeah. Only one way. Yeah, we went to the Puey Herman dinosaurs. Yeah, it's like that. Yeah. That's cool.
Starting point is 01:16:15 There's a gift shot there, too. Not much else. Well, that's the same with this. Like, there's a, there's a really good splash pad next to it. It has a camera selling all the like, Dini the Sun Saves Dinosaur. Just advise you to use a umbrella put on sunscreen. There's a lot of that in town. There's a lot of mascots.
Starting point is 01:16:38 mascots. There's a lot of, like, cool little installations. Do they have a high school and what's the high school's mascot? Can you imagine? It was just the bulls. They're like, yeah. Warriors. Oh, boy, and now I'm really interested.
Starting point is 01:16:57 Well, I know, like, the University of Calgary sports teams are the dinoes. Yeah. If it's a herbivore or something, I'm going to be really upset. Drumheller Valley, secondary school. Cool. Well, their logo already has the three Raptor Clause. Yeah. It's just the Toronto Raptors logo. Welcome back to school.
Starting point is 01:17:17 It's got a picture of a surfing dinosaur. That rules. Welcome back to school. School year is going to be fun as hell. That's their mascot. Drumheller famous for it surfing. Just let me go to theirs. It's a very small print.
Starting point is 01:17:34 I know. It's very small print. But maybe if I go to. DvS D-V-S-D-O's D-V-S-D-O With a Y D-Y-N-O
Starting point is 01:17:47 D-Y-N-O D-Y-N-O D-Y-N-O D-Y-N-O Dino was his name-O Do I want to log in? This could be This could be fucking up
Starting point is 01:18:00 your algorithm They've got a lot of dino's content Nothing but dino mascots from here on So you go you go to Drum Heller, you stay in one of the hotels, you check out the hoodoos. And the hoodos are like these kind of strange, I don't know why they were like rock formations. Do you know what the deal is with? Tell me what the deal is with the hood.
Starting point is 01:18:23 Oh, it's been forever. It's, it's a wind erosion, I think. As I recall, like some of the layers of rock is stronger than others. It's a tall, thin spire or pillar of rock carved by natural erosion. There you go. Nailed it. Yeah. Yeah. See? And there is natural. They are the dynos with a Y. Congratulations, Drum Heller. This year's going to be your year. The surfing year for the dinos. So yeah, went to Drum Heller.
Starting point is 01:18:51 Lots of fun, lots of fun photo opportunities. And then went to the museum itself. This museum? It kicks ass. It is honestly, it's one of the best museums I've ever met in. Every part of it's awesome. It's so well done. Like, as a kid, it was mind-blowingly
Starting point is 01:19:08 Cool. As an adult, still very cool. Is there interactive stuff? There's tons of interactive. Can you wear a, you know, dinosaur suit? Can you VR and be hunted? You can VR. There's a VR thing where you're holding, like you're kind of in, there's a dinosaur head, and you're in the head and you're looking at like different prey and stuff like that. Oh, that's cool. They have, they had one.
Starting point is 01:19:31 It was the same thing as when I was a kid. You could build a dinosaur virtually, and it would tell you if the dinosaur could survive or not. Oh, wow. So it would be like, it's too top-heavy, it wouldn't be able to move. And you try really hard to make one that won't work. Short front feet, short, back feet, tiny, tiny head. And as a vegetarian, when you see an herbivore, a herbivore, an herbivore, a herbivore. A herbivore, I'd leave my lips.
Starting point is 01:20:00 Delicious. Or do you think? Oh, he's just like me. Yeah. No, we're not too different being. I bet he also has a gluten intolerance. They probably, look, if you did the science, most dinosaurs were gluten intolerant.
Starting point is 01:20:14 Yeah. It's anyways, like the displays, lots of, like, real fossils. I learned stuff. I asked a guide there. Why is this? Why is that? There was a dinosaur that had been, like, trapped in tar upside down,
Starting point is 01:20:32 so it's completely preserved. is very kingly. Oh, I hope I don't die like this. I don't get trapped in tire like this. It'd be so embarrassing to be caught this way. And put on display for everybody forever. I was thinking about that. It was like, it's just a random dinosaur.
Starting point is 01:20:49 For all any of us know, we might be the thing that people are like, see, that's what they used to look like. But it's preserved the like scales. And you could like see, it was like seeing in the real animals. It was really cool. And then... So there's interactive stuff. There's stuff that's fenced off.
Starting point is 01:21:10 There was one exhibit. It was really right in a line because it wasn't any fencing off, but it clearly was not to be climbed around it. And this kid, kid got away from his dad. Oh, man, the shenanigans. This kid got it too. Because he couldn't grab the kid. The kid moved far enough away that he couldn't be grabbed. But he knew that if he was going to be apprehended, his dad would also have to follow him into the exhibit.
Starting point is 01:21:32 Boom. And, like, he totally was not supposed to be there. And this dad was being run ragged. He had two kids going in opposite directions. He had no authority over either of them. They didn't fear him at all. He said, come out of here. They just went more into it, farther into it.
Starting point is 01:21:49 Were they boys? Yes. A couple of boys. Because if there were girls, he could have been like, clever girl. He could have said that. But, yeah, at one point, he was. was playing with a stegosaurus's head and uh and sally was with uh shouted at them get your son out of there and he did i was like oh shit was it a real stegosaurus it was uh no i think
Starting point is 01:22:17 it was it was bones it was it was bones but i don't think it was real bones oh okay i think it was like plaster cast but anyways this kid very easily could have ruined that display very expensive exhibit he was touching the head and i was like oh my god you're not supposed to do that yeah um and the only, his dad really sprung in action when Sally yelled him because I think he was like still trying to get the other one. That is, yeah, like, maybe my kids can just be a little bit crazy. Oh, that lady's mad at me. Yeah, maybe no one sees this. But in the kids, oh, no.
Starting point is 01:22:53 Like, okay. It's just like when mom's mad at them. Yeah. There's a third now. Yeah. Yeah. It's, you know, in fairness to the kids, it wasn't roped off. so you could, there was nothing stopping you from going into this.
Starting point is 01:23:05 It was just off the path. Yeah. Yeah. And like I say, this kid, once he knew he was out of grabbing distance, he went ahead of field day. And there was no, don't climb the stegosaurus sign. No. But, you know, I think everybody else in the museum know to stay away. There will be one now.
Starting point is 01:23:22 What's the most rideable dinosaur? Not the stagosaur. Yeah, that's probably the least. I'm going to try to ride a T-Rex. He has the best saddle shape I think like a Like a you know Brachiosaurus
Starting point is 01:23:36 Yeah Kind of like would be like riding a Triceratops You can get nice and nestled behind the hood That's true But he's all slanty though So you'd be like sliding Like it'd be really hard
Starting point is 01:23:45 That's like that little V in the neck Behind the head You'd be riding up in his neck? Well yeah behind the hood part And then he's like a steering wheel The hood part Yeah wait What's the hood part
Starting point is 01:23:54 The triceratops He's got like a Oh yeah no triceratops Oh yeah no tricerat The other two They get mixed stuff all the time. And then that's, I learned that like the, like the holograms and not.
Starting point is 01:24:04 All the GCs. C.Rex. T-seratops. Yeah. Yeah. The seratops is like a genre, not a genre, but a genus of dinosaur. Like there's try and do and whatever and different head configurations. This is something I learned.
Starting point is 01:24:22 Yeah. Is there a moncerotops? Monoceratops. I think there's probably a monocon. Yeah. And they do exist. and they're magical. But yeah, if anybody is looking for a cool thing to bring the kids to next summer break.
Starting point is 01:24:37 Yeah. And they're doing a meet and greet with all the dinosaurs. Yep. From the television show dinosaurs. You get to meet the baby, not the mama. Earl, I want to say is the dad's name. Earl Sinclair, yeah. Baby Sinclair and the rest.
Starting point is 01:24:55 That show, it's so bizarre that it existed. and was on for years. And it ended with... Them all dying. Them all dying with the whatever. With the snow. Armageddon coming from space. Which is so inaccurate.
Starting point is 01:25:09 Wait a minute. Up to that point in the show, dead on science-wise. Yeah. I felt like, because on the show he wore a hard hat at work. But I was like, all these guys have like extra bones in their head to protect them. Well, he should wear a hard hat at home because he's getting hit by that frying panel. I forgot. That was part of it.
Starting point is 01:25:29 Yeah, I'm the baby. I love me. Man, when people get into a character or catchphrase, they really, they go all the way with it. Well, what do you say? Guys, should we do some overheards? Yeah, sure. Well, gang, it's that time of year again. That's right.
Starting point is 01:25:49 Labor Day is here, which means you can't wear white anymore. No. Well, yes, but no, it's great British bake-off season. Oh, right. And that means it's time to draft your teams. play along. There's a new judge in town, but the game's the same. Draft your bakers, score points like it's fantasy football, and talk smacking a group chat. I wonder what Nigella Lawson would think about the Scribble Double. So, listen to TV Chef Fantasy League with me,
Starting point is 01:26:14 Mike Caballon. If you wadiway. And Sierra Cato. New episodes every week at maximum fun.org, or wherever you get your podcasts. What's more action-packed than prestige television? With more continuity than comic books? and more reality than reality television It's professional wrestling And to better understand wrestling is the ultimate form of entertainment You need the Tights and Fights Podcast

Starting point is 01:27:25 And we always like to start with the guest. Gavin, do you have an overheard? I do have an overheard. This one was from a recent trip when I went back home to Whitehorse, and my wife, Sheon, and I were walking down the street. And we got passed by in the other direction, these two gentlemen that were chatting back and forth to each other, and the only snippet of the conversation we heard was one guy saying,
Starting point is 01:27:46 And then I got to the place and they had no gravy. And the other guy goes, no gravy. And he goes, no gravy. And they kept walking. Oh, man, it's the mind real. Yeah. A lot of places I'd be disciplined. It wasn't around Thanksgiving or anything.
Starting point is 01:28:00 Like, I don't know why gravy was a... You need gravy 365. That is true. If you're a mashed potato band. Yeah. Or a putine man. Yeah. Gravy is like, it's not something I think of until it's on the menu.
Starting point is 01:28:13 You know what I mean? Like, I don't ever mean to go get gravy. You never gone to a place expecting it and would be disappointed. Aside from like Putin or, you know. My, I remember growing up, my friend was, we went to like a cafeteria style restaurant and he ordered fries with gravy. And I was like, this was before I knew Putin existed. Yeah. And he was British.
Starting point is 01:28:36 He's like, oh, yeah, it's a British thing. Yeah. But Putin, not a British thing. Not at all. I love how Putin blows the mind of anyone who hasn't had it before. like gravy and fries, no problem. Throw some cheese on there. Slow the fuck down.
Starting point is 01:28:48 What is wrong with you? No, they're not full cheese, just the curds. You got to add the curds, man. You can't just throw cheese in it and call it putteen, although a lot of places do that. Yeah, yeah, yeah. It's got to be squeaky. It's got to be squeaky. That's it.
Starting point is 01:29:01 And it's like our off mentioned should be a sponsor of the show New York fries. They make a mean poutine. Yeah. For what you get in a food court? They're no number one. It's a spot. Yeah. What is your, uh,
Starting point is 01:29:14 What are your top five food court foods? Wow. I mean, New York fries is in the top five. Yeah. I also like any Japanese, like, fry it up on the flat top place. Oh, yeah. Okay. Yeah.
Starting point is 01:29:29 Regardless of brand. Oh, yeah, it's all the same. Yeah, fair. In my gluten eating days, either a Cinnabon or a Cookies by George or anything in that kind of department. A Julius. Yeah. Julius and a hot dog.
Starting point is 01:29:44 weirdly still gets me. Yeah, I can't. I used to get the strawberry Julius with the pizza dog. Oh, God. I never get the pizza dog. I'm not strong enough. I was as a young man. Yeah, that's a young man's treat.
Starting point is 01:30:01 And then finally. Like, not Sparrow. That's kind of like. I guess maybe the Chinese, like, where you pick and choose the things. Oh, okay. Yeah. Yeah, I'll have one.
Starting point is 01:30:16 Seven and, yeah. How about you? Yeah, like Orange Julius and the hot dog would probably be mine. Or an A&W. Weirdly, I worked in A&W as a teenager. You did? Yeah, and I still go back to it. Sure.
Starting point is 01:30:28 Which I think is... Did they ever tell you what it stands for in W? Allen Wright. No, that's not what I heard. Dave, what did you hear? I heard different information. I heard that it stands for Avogers and whoop here. So that is troubling to this awful Allen and Wright rumor.
Starting point is 01:30:45 That is true. They're taking, they're taking all of the credit from Mr. Ambogar. And when you, like, much like Graham, uh,
Starting point is 01:30:52 saying the to the herbivores, he's like me. Yeah. When you were working there as a teenager and you had to serve a teen burger where you're like, hey, it's a little bit of me. Yeah.
Starting point is 01:31:01 I related to it. Yeah. But I did, speaking of, and no gravy, that reminds me of, I was working the drive-thru once. Uh,
Starting point is 01:31:08 it was near closing, so we were putting most things away. Was this in Whitehorse? In Whitehorse. Yeah. And someone came through the drive-thru. Dog sled. Yeah.
Starting point is 01:31:15 Yeah, that actually doesn't detect the thing. They have to knock on the window. I'm not stealing those sleds. Yeah, I need, how many dogs we got? We'll get 14 burgers. Can I get 12 kids packs? How old are those dogs? I want 14 burgers.
Starting point is 01:31:32 Wait, do you want 14 burgers? This man, he pulled up to the drive-thru and ordered just one thing. He said, hi, can I get a large gravy? and a straw. Wow. Yeah. And I was dis and I literally responded to him like, can I watch? Weird.
Starting point is 01:31:53 Like I don't believe you're going to do this. This is a dare or something. And we had just tossed the gravy because it was near closing. Huge disappointment. Closing time. Time to toss the gravy. You don't have to go home, but there's no gravy here. Dave, do you have been over here?
Starting point is 01:32:12 Yeah. I was walking my crazy dog. dogs through the neighborhood the other day. They were being nice, though. And I walked past two women talking, and one was in her yard, like, with gardening gloves on, and the other one was, I guess, her neighbor. And I just heard one of them say, I haven't been around much this summer. I've been working or in Victoria or having a sty in my eye.
Starting point is 01:32:40 Yeah. You know, is it pink eye? Is it just a sty? It's hard to say. Block my calendar. Yeah. Is it just a stye? Maybe she's born with it.
Starting point is 01:32:49 Maybe it's just a sigh. There's a comedian Malick Alessal, who was living in town for a while, had a joke. He had Pink Eye at one point. And on stage, his joke was, you should have seen the other guy. The other guy with some bed sheets. He's on adults. More adults. Adults or adults?
Starting point is 01:33:14 I don't know. No, I haven't seen the program. Have you seen it? I haven't seen it yet. It's on Disney Plus. Maybe that's what I watched right. And it's, uh, I saw articles about him. Yeah.
Starting point is 01:33:24 Yeah, that was crazy. I, I do remember opening my TV app and seeing Malik and be like, oh, my God. Yeah. No, he's, he's going to, uh, right to the top. Yeah. And you know what? It's lonely up there. Yeah.
Starting point is 01:33:36 So let me up there, too. It's lonely at the top. Well, why are you invite some friends? Yeah. You've been on the. Yeah, yeah, yeah. Bring us to the top. Yeah, that's only fair.
Starting point is 01:33:49 Graham, do you haven't overheard or a stye in your eye. I don't. Luckily, today is a stye free day. And as long as I take that prescription, I'm living a stye free lifestyle. Don't forget to disclose to your future lovers. Yeah. Because a sty is forever.
Starting point is 01:34:07 The sty is forever. There was, I was on the train coming back from the airport. And there was a kid. And I was just like, I bet you this is what I sounded like as a kid in the way he was going on. I was like, this kid, funny kid, running at the mouth the whole time this train's going. And he was with his mom or aunt. And she was talking about trusting her inner circle. And he was like, he said, I don't trust my inner circle with a potato chip.
Starting point is 01:34:36 He doesn't trust his inner circle. Does he think it's like a physical part of his body? I think he just means he doesn't trust his inner circle. He wouldn't trust them to take care of a potato chip. Oh. Oh, okay. Yeah. I wouldn't trust them with a potato chip.
Starting point is 01:34:52 Well, I wouldn't trust them either. They'd eat it. Yeah. I don't know anyone who wouldn't. They're fragile too. That's a hard thing to be trusted with, honestly. Yeah, that's true. I've never been.
Starting point is 01:35:00 In Homek class, you had to take care of a potato chip. Yeah, exactly. I'd swaddle it. Yeah. Always broke. Have you ever misjudged the, like, strength of a chip that then you've got dip on it? And you've, like, misjudged. Every time.
Starting point is 01:35:15 Like, maybe it's a strange chip you've never had before. Everyone's dip is half chip by the end. Half broken, abandoned soldiers. Yeah. I... Well, then you gotta use the other ones to dig it up. Yeah, exactly. Yeah.
Starting point is 01:35:26 Every second potato chip is just saving Private Ryan. Oh, Graham, your hat. I got a dinosaur on it. But I thought it was an Arcterics. It does kind of look like the Arterics logo. And it didn't occur to me that, why would Graham have an Arcteric? He doesn't. He's got a
Starting point is 01:35:45 I went through the... Drum Heller hat. Yeah, I got a drum heller hat. It's cool. This is, the way that the dinosaur is, like, posed kind of with its head back like that is apparently because of the muscles. When they died, like certain muscles would strain, and that's, like,
Starting point is 01:36:01 a lot of them look like that. Yeah, that's why they all have O face. Yeah. Yeah. And that's what I asked the guy. I was like, what's this guy doing? I know this pose. What do we? Yeah, they all do that? Uh, no, but I A lot of the... Yeah, it's common.
Starting point is 01:36:14 Yeah. Is there a common... I don't see a lot of dead humans, but do we have a thing that we do? Yeah, thumbs up. Good life, bad life. This guy had a good life. Now, we also have overheard sent into us by people all over the map. If you want to send one in, you can send it into SBY at maximum fun.org.
Starting point is 01:36:35 This first one comes from Keegan from Dartmouth. I was at a small town family restaurant this weekend with my wife and kids. There was a dad and two pre-teen kids sitting behind me. While the waitress was taking the order, I overheard the dad interject. No, let's get it with mashed potatoes so we could share. It's gravy related. That was the gravy man. He travels across the land.
Starting point is 01:36:58 You're not getting your own side. Okay, we're all piling our sides in. And we'll, like, get fries. They're way more shareable. Yeah, that's true. Here's a scoop for you. This fist in potatoes, mashed potatoes. What's your number one style of potato?
Starting point is 01:37:12 Ooh, I do like a good fry. I think that would probably be my favorite side. I like chips, but sometimes I find you, they're like, you can't trust them. You can't trust them. You can't trust them in the thing and then trust your friends around them. That's right. It wouldn't live in my circle. This next one comes from Alex A from Victoria.
Starting point is 01:37:33 We were at the art gallery today and I overheard my oldest daughter say, cows are almost too phonogenic looking at a painting of a farm. what are they hiding? Yeah. They cut those lovely eyelashes. Suspicious. Yeah. They got four legs.
Starting point is 01:37:48 They're pretty easy to, photogenic. Yeah. Well, there was a painting? Yeah. Okay. Painted.
Starting point is 01:37:54 Yeah. But when you drive by a farm, right? Everyone says cows. You guys say cows. Yep. I did the whole time we were in Alberta. When the drive near Abby's parents' house on Gabriola, there's a big field and sometimes.
Starting point is 01:38:11 it's cows. Sometimes it's sheep. Yeah. Yeah. But it's, yeah, I don't know what the schedule is. And sheep,
Starting point is 01:38:17 not photogenic at all. Look at those weird pupils. I don't trust them either. Have you guys ever seen like a, like a bison farm or anything like that? Oh yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, big bison farm.
Starting point is 01:38:26 Yeah, yeah, yeah. Those things are huge. And I guess they're meat. Do they make bison leather? Yeah, like bison burgers. I don't know about leather. But, yeah, like it's a, but a bison burger sounds like something
Starting point is 01:38:38 Fred Flintstone. Yeah. But it was. But you can. get it in the grocery store. Yeah. Yeah, yeah. Ground bison.
Starting point is 01:38:44 Fry up some bison burgers tonight, share it with my herb before friends. Yeah. Bison leather, I think, as well, yeah. Yeah. I know nothing. I think they look super cool. They've got kind of, it looks like a hairy shawl they've got around their shoulders. Yeah, very regal.
Starting point is 01:39:02 Yeah. Very photogenic bison. I feel like there's flags and or plaques in Canada that have bison on them. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. We're not choosy with the animals, though, on our things.
Starting point is 01:39:13 Yeah, that's true. They don't have to be majestic. Yeah, we're pretty proud of the loon and the beaver. And let's not forget the fat marmot. The fat marmot. I'm pretty sure when the loony came out, I had never seen or heard a loon in my entire life. Because I don't think they're anywhere in Elburn. Are they out here?
Starting point is 01:39:30 Do we get loons? I saw one at Abby's parents place on the ocean. Yeah. Doing their thing. Make a nice looning. They sit on the water and they go. go under. Yeah.
Starting point is 01:39:41 Ooh. And then they go, it looks like I'm there. That's why we picked them on our coin. Beautiful song. This last one comes from Brittany in Downingdon, Pennsylvania. I was at a baseball game. There was a guy and a girl behind me.
Starting point is 01:40:03 The guys were explaining a lot of rules of the game to her when she asked him, how do they practice baseball? Good question. You either master it or you don't. Yeah, yeah. If you're good, first time out. Yeah. Yeah, they hand to everybody a bat.
Starting point is 01:40:19 It is a thing. It's a sport of taking turns. Yeah. It's my favorite thing about it. And that's kind of got to be the thing with practicing. Yeah. And there's a lot. It's the most standing aroundest game that I can think of.
Starting point is 01:40:36 Sprints of activity. Yeah. And then a lot of, a lot of standing ready waiting for something to have i'm trying to think of a sport that i could comfortably have chewing tobacco during a game oh sure outside of curling curling oh yeah sure well then where do you spit it you gotta be one of those guys with a cup yeah big gulp cup they play a lot of cricket at the park over there yeah and i that's a very complicated um like uh scoring system yeah but there does seem to be a lot of standing around yeah yeah kind of nice outfits yeah yeah yeah
Starting point is 01:41:09 They look baseball. It's like some neat, neat looking outfits. Yeah, they are tidy. Yeah. A lot of tucks shirts. Do you do any, were you a sportsman? No, I was, uh, I fenced a bit in college. Did you really?
Starting point is 01:41:20 Yeah. Oh my God, my friend went to the Canada Games for it. Yeah, no, he beat me. Took my spot of fourth fencer in Canada. Were you on the fencing team or was it freelance? I was freelance. There was just like a club that met once a week. Very funny joke.
Starting point is 01:41:34 No, that is very good. It's very good. So good we missed it. So good. Yeah. So natural. Sometimes funds are just like forced through the trees. I mean, I am not happy with myself.
Starting point is 01:41:46 I just want to be noticed. In addition to overhears that are written in, we also accept your phone calls and voice memos. You want to send us a voice memo. It's SPY at maximum fun.org. And if you want to call us, it's one, 844-779-7631. That's one. Ugh.
Starting point is 01:42:04 Spypod. One. Like these people are. I was on autopilot, and I don't know if I did all the numbers. Anyway, these are all voice memos. Hey, Dave Graham and probable guest. This is Dave from Kingston, Ontario. I was at a Costco, and I saw a woman grabbing an advent calendar of wines, so like 24 wines.
Starting point is 01:42:35 And she said, you know, I think I'm going to get this. and her partner said that's perfect. This way you can have a bunch of wines that you don't like. Anyway, I'll fuck go. Snarky. Are these like full bottles? That's a big box or are they just like little sippy cups. Yeah, they might be like mini bottles.
Starting point is 01:42:55 Yeah. Maybe 24 bottles of wine is a lot. That is a lot of wine. That is like if that's your Christmas, you might need to talk to somebody. Yeah. Yeah. The one I found here is mini bottles. Oh, okay.
Starting point is 01:43:07 You know what I like about that time of year is there's a lot of times when people are just getting drunk. Yeah. Yeah. It is true. That span between like, uh, you know, what do you say? Like the 22nd all the way up till January 1st. Yeah. Easily.
Starting point is 01:43:20 Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Heavily, the most socially acceptable daytime drinking time. Yes. Like two weeks on end. Yeah. And it's, uh, there's no other time like it.
Starting point is 01:43:29 You get drunk on Valentine's Day, you know, if you're with somebody or if you're alone. Yeah. Um, fourth of July. Mm-hmm. Pretty good. I think a lot of the summer, you can, you can like, you know, have an afternoon cocktail at one. That is true.
Starting point is 01:43:43 That's true. Patio season. Yeah, patio season. We're crushing our spritzes. Apple spritzes. Yeah. What was the drink this summer? There's always a summer drink.
Starting point is 01:43:53 I think apple sprits was last time. Apple sprits. Apparol. Apparel. Apparel spritz. Yeah, I'm a drink of the summer, 2026. My guess. Ask Jeeves.
Starting point is 01:44:04 Ask Jeeves. Pim's. Pim's cup? Pim's. PIMSCO. Ooh, a PIMS cap. I, oh, boy, what's the internet password?
Starting point is 01:44:14 D-Y-N-O. I'm working on two computers here. I'm like, I'm like Dennis Nedry. Drink of the summer, 2026. Let's do this. Did you say the magic word?
Starting point is 01:44:31 The standard drink for 2026 is the Hugo Spritz. Oh, we're sprits in again. rise for its light botanical and refreshing profile. That is according to Synergy. SynergyTagy with a wine. Also, Hugo Spritz sounds like a guy you want to stay away from a toughback. Stay away from Hugo Spits. What's in it?
Starting point is 01:44:56 A Hugo. Just a sprits of something. A sprits of Hugo. All right. Enjoy. Next phone call. Hi, Dave and Graham. This is Keanu calling in from Houston.
Starting point is 01:45:07 with an overheard from the used bookstore. I was in an aisle today with a woman who was showing her two sons some comic anthologies, and she picked one up and said, this one, it's funny, but not funny enough to buy, and set it down.
Starting point is 01:45:22 And then picked up another book and said, this Dilbert, on the other hand, now that's funny. Anyways, off I go. You just made a sale. Kids love Dilbert. Which way to the Dilbert section. The craziest thing, Scott Adams, who went very right wing in his later years, on his property, he had a, like a tower built that looked like Dilbert's head.
Starting point is 01:45:48 Really? Yeah, with turrets where the hair would be. Okay, I can picture that. But it's crazy. It's a strong choice. Yeah, do you think like Charles, Charles. Charles. Charles Schultz has like a Linus house.
