Welcome back to golf subpar with Colt Nost and Drew Stoltz.
What a week it was for our man, Harris English, aka the Magic Man,
as we like to call him, after his incredible card trick out at the Rocket Mortgage Classic a couple years ago.
But Harris, the sweet swinger, picked up his fifth win on the PGA tour at a brutal Torrey Pines golf course.
Shooting eight under par to win by one over Sam Stevens, who made a Saturday final round charge.
Harris reminds me of that Oz the Mentalist.
Yeah, it's just blowing the minds of every.
athlete the world. That's like Harris's shit.
Let me show you this trick, guys.
But to his golf, dude, I've been vocal about this.
I love when it's tough.
Eight under par, awesome. It took crazy
mother nature, wind, cold, all this stuff.
Tough golf course, actual rough.
Nine pars on the back.
Nine, what, 11 straight to close the thing out?
I know it's not maybe the most exciting, but I think
making par a good score is fun, especially with coming
after 30 plus under and Mao.
Palm Springs, light it up.
I love seeing this, but that's what it takes, more or less, to challenge these guys.
You got to have some weird stuff going on.
And they had it.
Torrey Pines South is brutal if it's calm.
It's where the hardest golf course is in the world.
Throwing those conditions, especially in the final round on Saturday, where it was also a lot cooler.
Ball wasn't traveling unless you're Aldrich pot eater.
As Trevor O'Man taught us today.
He's smash.
193 ball speed on the first tee, the final round, with about a 15 to 20 mile an hour
crosswind and it was 50 degrees.
You're wearing multiple layers.
I don't know when I'm going to hit a golf ball next, but when I do, I'm turning my left
hand straight over.
I want to see four knuckles and I want to just start hitting missiles.
Watch out for that left, I would say calf, but you don't really have one.
Watch out for that left if you do that.
This thing can take more than it looks like sneaky strong, like a deer.
But yeah, it'll go left.
But dude, it's fun.
He's loaded with talent.
20 years old, youngest winner on the Corned Ferry tour, second youngest graduate off that tour.
And here he has just a few starts into his third career.
final round. No, he didn't have his, or his final group. No, he didn't have his best stuff,
but look out for that kid. Yeah, tough, very tough conditions. I will say,
for me, like, entertainment-wise, I do like to watch him struggle, but I do like to see guys
have the ability to make birdies. And yes, you could, but it was so tough. We're talking about
the final group, who, three guys that are playing, obviously the best heading into that day.
There was one birdie made on the back nine for the entire last group, and that was Aldrich on 18,
where he hit it just over the back of the green and got it up.
up and down. So therefore, I thought it was a little difficult. I'm not a big fan of the front left
pin on 18 at Tori on the final round. Like I want, with a part five being in the finishing
hole, I want an eagle to be made. And the only, we saw two Eagles all day with it being downwind.
And that was, I think, a chip in and like a 50 footer from Keegan Bradley. So I would like to see
if you could have had a chance. Yeah, he could. But I mean, I just would, if you put that pin back
right or front right, I think front right's the best one. You got, you got the water in play.
You got some guys being able to hit it.
possibly landed a couple yards short in that gap and it'll bounce up there and make some
equals the front left one with water right in front of it you're not going at that i mean you
in my opinion you have to have like a hybrid in where you can hit a high slice and try to land it
soft i mean a six iron five iron is probably not going to stay front right brings the water more into play
i feel like they just blew it long when it's when it's front left we saw the first day where it
was perfect conditions i mean it was dome golf out there in the scores were low we saw 65 on the
South. Ludwig Oberg
shot 63. I was with him on the
North. I mean, it was just... He was 7-Under
quick. The guy is so good. It's
absolutely ridiculous. But then the wind picked
up, I will say. They're a little
soft. I mean, they stopped play
during the second round. Do you
see the shit I played it in 2016?
It goes around every year. I mean, it was
blowing a thousand. I know it was a little wet, so
probably the ball wasn't moving. But we were walking
down the fair way. I'm like, these guys are so
fucking soft. They're stopping play right
now. It's blowing 15 miles an hour.
Pampered babies.
Ball's rolling around on greens.
Just hit it.
My ball curved three yards, guys.
The wind's blowing too hard.
Yeah, Hedekke's ball was just rolling into the Pacific Ocean at one point.
But I complain, or I don't complain, but I say I hate seeing the shootouts and the 35s
unders.
And it's like, oh, if you go four holes without a birdie, you're done.
So I stand by.
I love seeing single digits.
And it's really hard to get.
And by the way, you're going to have 40 more weeks this year where they shoot 20.
So it's fun to watch them struggle a little bit.
I want to see what they do to that golf course, if anything, for a couple of weeks from now.
I was going to say.
I hope they don't touch that rough.
They're going to be fewer guys out there, better players, better field.
Leave that thing alone.
Maybe we'll get a little wind.
I don't expect to be cold like that again, but challenge them.
It's okay.
It's going to be interesting going back there for the Genesis, all four rounds on the South golf course.
Will they keep the rough up?
I mean, you've got the big dogs coming in.
Scotty Sheffler, Roy, McRoy, Zander Shafley.
We've heard players in the past complain about having deep rough.
I'm all for it.
Tough shit.
Obviously, as a guy who's straight.
You're playing for Form Schmell.
You can deal with some rough.
I mean, grow that shit up.
If you want to smash it down there,
perfect.
You miss the fairway.
You're going to get punished.
I'm all for it.
I thought Tori played great.
It can get a little boring.
Some of the holes look the same,
but it's a challenging golf course.
And as we always say,
it delivers a great finish.
It seems like every single time.
Yeah, I don't think it's the best golf course
in the world.
It's not a golf course.
I would particularly love to play over and over.
It's just a bunch of long,
straight holes, more or less,
but typically yields a phenomenal finish.
some really, really good ones.
Another thing that took place this week
that's making some waves.
Your girl, Dr. Pepper,
Doddy Pepper coming out and criticize,
like publicly on the broadcast,
slamming slow play.
And did it in a nice way.
He said, like, let's use a new word for this,
and it's respect, respect for the players,
for the broadcast, for everything.
The fans.
Because the trickle down on all that stuff,
it matters.
And I feel like the volume's getting cranked up on this thing.
It's been a problem for a long time,
but right now I feel like from all angles,
people are bitching about it.
I don't know how bad it needs to get before the PGA Tour does something.
Sure, the conditions were difficult at Torrey Pines,
but all you got to do is go back a couple weeks, Palm Springs,
dome golf, not a hard golf course to walk, by the way, PGA West Stadium course,
not far green to T, 530.
It happens no matter where they play.
It took 10 minutes longer than the final round at Tori Pines at PGOS.
But look, we could talk about this all day.
The pace of play policy, the PGA Tour has sucks.
I mean, we were talking about it on radio today.
Basically, a rules official will come up when you're out of position and be like, hey, y'all need to close the gap.
If you don't close the gap, then they come up, hey, you're on the clock.
Okay, cool.
You have 40 seconds to play your shot.
If you get a bad time, okay, that was your first bad time.
Next one's going to be a stroke.
You have to fuck up four times in order to get a penalty.
Like, no, here's how we need to do this.
Okay, you're behind.
Hey, guess what?
Sleeze, your group's behind.
You're on the clock.
You get a bad time?
You know you have 40 seconds?
Boom, there's one shot.
You get another one?
Boom, there's two shots.
You won't get another one.
And then you get a third one.
Guess what?
You're terrible.
You're out.
This is taking too long.
This should be so easy to fix.
It's horrible.
And Doddy Pepper wasn't singling out of anyone.
She was just saying it took the final group.
It's not one person.
It's the whole group.
And it was nobody in the final group.
Those guys were moving.
All three play at a very nice speed.
Andrew Novak, who finished third.
It's about as fast as they come out there.
But it took the final group three hours to play nine holes.
Like that just can't happen.
We all wanted to go faster.
I thought the letter Justin Thomas wrote to all the players talking about
being more open, showing some more personality, helping out the broadcast was awesome.
But with that letter came everyone on social media and pretty much 90% of it was, hey, this is great.
But we don't care about that.
We care about showing more golf shots, playing faster, and less commercials.
More golf, I think, is the number one, A, B, C, D, and E.
That's all people want.
If you play faster, we can show more shots.
Exactly.
If we're like, hey, let's pan over to so-and-so trying to clean up par on 12 and it's a five-footer and he walks around twice and does.
as his aim point.
Because in two minutes, and that's the only thing you've seen is this dude getting ready to hit a five-footer.
You missed a bunch of other shots that you could have been showing during that time.
The problem is, like, the putting is one thing.
Like, we can come back to the putt because they can see where it's going with that.
It's the approach shot, the live shot where, oh, the listeners, hey, they want to,
the viewers want to see the player caddy interaction.
So, okay, let's zoom in on that audio.
Well, they talk for a minute and a half.
Meanwhile, you've missed two or three other shots you could have shown.
But, hey, you want to hear this player caddy talk for a minute and a half when they're
technically supposed to only have 40 seconds.
Yeah.
It's a lot.
Props to Dottie for calling it out.
I just look at it at this point, it's like, dude, people are going to do what they can get away with.
And right now they can play in any pace they want, no penalty, no nothing.
So, of course, they're going to take forever until leadership actually steps up and does something, which, you know, if you're not hearing this from the fans right now at a time where you're dying for eyeballs, dying for attention, losing viewers, numbers are down.
Why wouldn't you listen to the people that are your consumers?
But this is our number one gripe.
It's the easiest fix in the world.
bring the rules of officials in, but guys, we're done with this.
As soon as the group's out of position, they're on the clock.
And if they have a bad time, start handing out shots.
And it will be fixed.
But it's like they don't want to fix it because it's been here.
And they're just ignoring it.
This is my opinion.
They are scared of the players, which I don't understand.
Obviously, I think because obviously the big guys, there's another place you can go play now.
And I think that scares the PGA tour a little bit.
They're worried, okay, if we piss this guy off, he'll just be like, forget it.
I'm out.
I'm going to him.
Sorry for this $10,000.
Fuck this, too.
I'm out.
I made $60 million last year, but this $10,000, that's it.
I'm packing my back.
And it's just, and I've heard from people, like, they do have a plan in place to speed this up.
I'm like, okay, cool.
You have a plan?
Let's put it into effect now.
Forget waiting until 2026 or later on in the year.
No, we enforce this now.
It is a rule on the PGA tour.
You have 40 seconds to get a shot.
Let's enforce it.
It shouldn't take long to come up with a plan.
Hey, here's the plan.
start enforcing the rule.
Meeting over adjourned, now start doing it.
So I don't know.
This horse has been beaten dead a number of times.
But yeah, I know.
He's just getting pounded, pony, you know.
Shetland.
Yeah, probably a Mustang.
But it's enough to know.
Start doing something.
Because it's a joke.
But congrats to Harris English.
Fifth win.
I love this guy.
His golf game is so pure.
No surprise to see him pick up another dub.
It was the first one in like 1,300 days or something.
I heard on the broadcast.
Five wins now.
He's one of those kids
that there aren't many of them,
but since junior golf on,
always been good,
always been one of the best
and never really had a off stretch
or lost his car or any of that.
He's just been good.
And that golf swing,
one of my favorite,
been one of my favorites
since the first time I saw it.
I'll tell you a fun story.
So Friday was the third round.
I was heading to the range
to check out some action
going on over there.
And Harris,
his caddy, Eric Larson,
was standing there,
and you have to catch a shuttle
to the range.
It's just a little bit of a drive.
And I was in my cart
going by and said hi to Elar, hadn't seen him yet this year.
And I was like, jump in, I'll give you a ride.
He's like, can we wait for Harris for a second?
And he was like, sure.
So here comes Harris.
And that morning they announced that it was officially, Genesis was going back to Torrey Pines.
And his record there is really good.
I mean, we're thirded U.S. Open, lost in the playoff.
Like, he loves Tori Pines.
And I was like, how excited are you coming back here in a couple weeks?
And he had the biggest smile.
He's like, oh, yeah.
And then he goes on to win this past week.
Look for him again in a couple weeks at a signature event.
I mean, the golf course is perfect for him.
I remember he was my dark horse, the U.S. Open that John Rom won a few years ago.
Finish third.
Actually posted a number.
It looked like he might possibly get in the playoff.
And there's a few guys that seem to play well around there all the time.
Him being one.
Brand Snetterker has been unbelievable there for whatever reason.
I don't think you'd pick that out.
Tiger, John Rom.
That was his, I mean, he loved that place more than anything.
And Harris is one of those.
So, yeah, going back to that, that's pretty nice.
Yeah, I saw John at Silverleaf, yesterday, practicing a little bit.
I was like, you kind of wish you.
I think you could have shot nine.
You wish you had Tori two out of four weeks?
Yeah.
Yeah.
But shout out, Harris.
Congratulations on your win.
Also, I want to say, congrats to Pat Perez on an incredible professional golf career.
This is a guy who kept his card 20 straight years on the PGA tour.
Won three times.
Been over at Liv the last couple of years.
It was part of a team title with the Aces in their first year.
But he is done.
He is switching over to the TV side.
That's right.
He was actually out there at Grass Clippings for our little event where we played the Ironheads Colt,
which we'll discuss in depth next week after the videos come out.
But seemed excited about it.
Feels like he wants to mix it up a little bit in that deal.
Yeah, it feels like he wants to get involved.
McCorm was out there calling shots.
He was getting involved, but he's had a hell of a run.
And good news, he's like, I want to come back on the pod as soon as all this stuff's done.
So it's been a long time coming since that first one we had with him.
And now apparently the doors are open.
So Pat will be back in short order.
Yeah, maybe not throw us under the bus this time.
Yeah, maybe it don't make us look like idiots, Pat.
Which will be discussed.
We can look like idiots.
I can do that on my own.
As long as it's truthful.
I can do that all on my own.
Let's get to this interview here today, which is a goodie.
It is good.
I thought we can talk football afterwards.
Yeah, I think we'll get, let's hit football after.
A lot to talk about.
Also, real quick, before.
For the Cowboys.
I do want to give a shout out to one of our recent guest, David Pooge, who, I know you and I both think this kid could be a star.
He is 22 years old, hits it nine miles, just finished third over on the DP World Tour.
That's four straight top fives for him.
He's up to 87th in the world.
Lookout.
I think he'll be in the PGA with his world ranking.
Special invite into the Masters, maybe.
I'd love to see it.
What a course that would be for him.
Yeah, but congrats to him on some great play.
Love that kid.
Excuse me.
Love that kid.
He smashes it.
Yeah, his whole game is good.
And, God, he just, he's.
Every single time, he chases all the world ranking points, which props to him.
He's not afraid to get on playing, go to Asia, go play wherever.
And it seems like any time he plays anywhere but live, like he's there at the top.
He's a, he needs to be in major championships.
Yeah, well, it ain't hard to play well when you're 3.30 down the middle of the railway.
Yeah, it's pretty fucking easy, David.
Yeah, yeah, exactly.
Take my word for it.
Yeah, exactly.
Not hard.
Let's get to another young gun.
Our guest this week, just turned pro at the age of,
17. It's amazing. He's been as successful as he is, considering Sleason Kitty bodybagged him and his partner at the four ball.
Thought his career could end right there. But here we go. We got Blades Brown on this week's subpar.
All right. It is a pleasure to welcome on a young man who recently made the leap into the world of professional golf.
You may have heard his name last week for the first time, but you're going to hear it a lot in the years to come.
And it's an all-time golf name. Blades Brown in the house, Blades. Good to be back with you, bud.
Yes, sir.
You got a lot going on.
Glad to be on the show.
You got it, Blades.
Good to see.
Long time.
Saw you out at Callaway today,
getting dialed in out there.
Games looking nice.
Thanks, man.
Yeah.
I saw you locking in with those performance wedget.
No, I'm not going to go that far,
but they definitely have some thickness to,
I'm not going to lie.
And I'll sound sleaze earlier.
I'm like, man, I thought this guy was a pro.
But, you know, you got to get all here.
Not no more.
Yeah, you know.
We got to have a little meat behind the clubs nowadays,
but I have no pride anymore.
You know, those days of Bligees.
These people that would try to play blades, not the actual irons.
I'm like, what are y'all doing?
You're not this good.
I don't practice anymore.
I want the miss hit to go about three yards shorter than the flushed one.
Yeah.
Honestly, people who play blades are kind of weird, if you ask me.
The older you get, the more you like them thick blades.
You'll learn that in your later years.
You know what I mean?
Nothing wrong with a little thickness.
Yeah, I think I've kind of doomed myself, though, because the day that I stop playing blades,
I think is a very sad day.
Well, you have to change your name.
Cavity back, brown?
That's kind of a shit name.
I might have to, I might have to, yeah, that might have to, yeah, we'll probably have to change my name if I ended up doing that.
So we're just not going to change my name.
Well, I think you have plenty of time.
That's the good news.
But we got to dive into this because I think a lot of the golf world is talking about this.
I mean, you turning pro at 17 years old isn't the most common thing in the game.
What went into that decision?
And did you even think about going to college at all?
Absolutely.
Yeah.
So I went on five official visits.
I went to Tennessee, Vandy, FSU, Stanford, and Illinois.
And I had the privilege of going to awesome schools,
talk to a lot of college coaches.
I mean, I would argue that my dad and my family,
we took the most time out of, you know, any other recruit,
just because my sister, unfortunately,
didn't have the best college recruiting experience.
She was one, and she was COVID.
So that kind of just messed up everything.
But she's a junior in college now.
but she didn't have the best, I guess, first and second year.
And so my dad was like, okay, we're going to take this seriously and we're going to make sure that Blades is going to go to right college.
So one on five visits, actually my official visit at Vanderbilt was the 10, it was the Vanderbilt Alabama game.
Okay.
Nice.
So it was, that was the most indifible game I've ever been.
At first, it started off first.
It's like, okay, if we're down by 20 in the first, in the first,
quarter we're going to leave. And then, and then we went and said, okay, we're leading after the first
quarter. If we're losing by 25 after the half, because I mean, you know, people have been saying like,
okay, let's not vandy this and blow it. But then they were winning after half time. We're like,
okay, we're staying the entire game. They ended up winning and I mean, the rest is history. So,
um, did you help carry the goalpost to Broadway? Yeah, good question.
Unfortunately, I was, you know, Coach Limbaugh made it loud and clear that if we do win the game, which he did say this.
He said if they win the game, you know, I'm not allowed to go on the field just because my official visit wouldn't want me getting hurt.
But it was, I definitely was tempted, but unfortunately, I wasn't able to get down there.
God, they probably thought they had you inked after that.
They're like Vanderbilt.
We just beat Pam.
It's a greatest game in the history of the school.
Yeah.
I mean, like I said before, I had the opportunity to go to a lot of really, really cool colleges.
I'd say it's like on the scale.
I mean, you got golf focused like Tennessee and then you got academic focus like Stanford.
So we were definitely looking at it every, every college possible.
But then, yeah, then the thought of turning pro was still on the table.
I had a lot of influential people surrounding me, whether it's my family, my friends, or my agents, sport five.
So, but then, uh, you know, that decision, I mean, it was just, it was such a difficult decision.
It took me, I don't know how long to make up my mind.
Because I mean, like foregoing college, just to go in PJs or like, I mean, some people say college is the best part of the life, right?
Or one of the most parts or I guess, uh, fun parts of the life.
So it ain't bad.
But then, but then, but then, you know, being me, I love golf.
And so when the thought of, okay, you can play on the PG,
tour. You can play pickleball, ping pong, basketball, golf all day long, no matter what,
and play something that you love. I was like, that's a done deal. So after that, I was like,
yeah, let's do it. You got to be careful with that pickleball. It's heard a lot of very talented,
important grown men that I know. It has, dude. It's the silent killer once you hit like 35. It's just,
oh, he blew his Achilles, his MCL's gone. Burn hard. Yeah. Blades question, and you can choose to not
answer this if you want, although I think now the decisions made, it's probably a safe space,
but you took your five, you listed the places. Did you have a lien if you were to go to college
of where you would end up? Man, that is a great question. It's, it all just depended on like what
I wanted. Like, did I want to go to Stanford and study a major, I don't know, something, computer
science or, I don't know, rocket ships, or you can go to somewhere like Tennessee where it's, I mean,
more golf focus.
So I prefer not to say, but I mean, at the end of the day, like I wanted to go pro.
And that was a decision that I made.
And I feel like it's the right decision.
You're off and running now.
You play the MX.
I mean, shoot 64 in the second round with 10 birdies.
I know you had a couple little hiccups here.
Had a great chance to make the cut.
But take us through the week.
What were the nerves like?
And how do you feel?
I mean, obviously, first time playing that tournament where it's a birdie fest.
You got to go crazy low.
Not the easiest situation, but how did you feel about the week?
I mean, I felt great.
You know, the first time I teed out of, I teed it up in a tour event was the
Morda Beach Classic, and I cannot put into words how I was feeling on that first
tea.
I mean, besides me getting another like five mile an hour club head speed, it, I mean,
it's like I said, I can't even put into words how I was feeling.
And then fast forward to the American Express.
I was feeling a little bit better just because I knew that,
I mean, I've been working mentally because, I mean, you know, Colton, you know that on the PGA tour, it's everyone's good out there.
But it's just a matter of whether or not you can, you know, fix this 15th club, six inches between your ears.
But I was feeling really confident on that first T.
I didn't at the fair way, unfortunately, but I definitely, I striped it.
Then as the round kind of got going, it just took me a second to kind of settle in.
I think I was like three over through three or something like that.
three or through four, but then rallied back with three consecutive birdies.
And then after that, I was just kind of on cruise control, which was, which was kind of
unfortunately just because Lakeinto is, I'd say, the easiest out of the three courses.
So you definitely needed to make your money there.
But then fast forward to the next day, I was feeling a lot better about myself, just because,
you know, I got my first round out of the way.
Now I can kind of do what I need to do.
And then yet again, I was another predicament.
I was one over through through two.
And there's, I bow you to par five.
So I'm like, hmm, all right, not the start I wanted, but we're just going to go with it.
And then I made six consecutive birdies right after that.
And that was, dude.
I've, so I've only, my record in tournament competition is five.
And actually, it was at the US Warball at Kew Island.
That was another, probably was on the receiving end of that bullshit.
I think, no, I think that was the group right before we played y'all.
But, so yeah, it actually, so I think I was like eight under through nine holes at one point,
or through the nine holes that I made 16 second, second birdies.
And dude, it could have been nine in a row.
Like I missed like a like a 12 footer on hole 18.
My, I guess that would have been seven in a row.
But I was hot.
It was a great.
It was a great feeling.
I mean, some of the pro am guys thought it was super funny because every time I'd hit a shot to like, I don't know, 15, 20.
feet, I'd get like this massive, like, yeah, like, let's go.
And then they'd hit it to like eight feet.
And then there'd be like a.
Yeah, we don't care about you guys.
We're here for Blaine.
You're old.
But it was, dude, I had so much fun.
That was one of the most fun rounds of golf I've ever had.
And then, you know, I kind of, I finished with a bogey, but, you know, I was just,
I was just praying to get into clubhouse after that.
I mean, eight hundred on the PGA tour is, is awesome.
So. Yeah, 10 tweets.
I think you shot the lowest score by someone under the age of what was the
18, under the age of 18 in the last like 40 years or something like that, or maybe ever.
That's sick. I didn't know that.
Yeah. Yeah, another one.
So at least could have made that up, but we'll just go with it.
No, add that to the mix. It was in there. They listed like Ty Tryon should shot of 65 and someone
else shot some stuff, but you were the lowest one. So another little feather in your cap.
In terms of the reception you got out there, was there anyone like you were looking forward to
meet that you got the chance to? Or was anyone that just kind of was overly cool to you that surprised
you. I thought it's it really means a lot whenever whenever people come up to you that like for example
Tiger Woods like dude when I got to meet Tiger that was so sick. But it really meant a lot to me when
Justin Thomas came up to me and he was like, hey man, like I'm rooting for you this week. Let's go.
Go make some birdies. And that was right before the second round. And I was like, if JT says it,
I got to do it. So it was it was sick, man. It really means a lot whenever like Ben Griffin. He's,
I've known him just through Sport 5 before I turned pro, and he's been, he's been, like,
he's kind of taking me under his wing and giving me some insights on what the PJ tour is like.
And, I mean, it's just, it really means a lot for, like, I'm sure it didn't mean anything to JT
to just come say hi.
But, like, to me, like, dude, that's awesome.
I'm hoping I can do that to some kids someday.
That's cool to hear.
Your dad informing today that you were a massive Ricky Fowler fan.
I mean, you are technically still growing up, but I guess in your younger years, you were a massive
Ricky Fowler fan. Then you got to hit balls alongside him there at PJ West.
I really hope that none of those pictures ever come surface. I was like, I was like full
Ricky Fowler, long shorts, orange shorts, orange shirt. I think I had an orange hat on one time.
Like I, dude, Ricky was like my guy. So it was, it was so cool to, uh, to be able to rep that.
I'm, I'm hoping, I'm hoping my dad doesn't ever show those anybody, but I don't know.
see. We may have to reach out, but the release of this
part feels appropriate. I can tell you this right now. Okay.
If the tournament is on CBS and you and Ricky Fowler are in the final
pairing battling it out on Sunday, we will get those pitchers. I can
care to you that. Oh, man. All right. Well, I'll be playing golf, so I won't have to see
him, but. Exactly. Everyone else will. Go back to that Tiger meeting. I think you
correct me if I'm wrong after the junior am, you were the medalist. So then you'd been
one of three guys to medalist at the U.S. Junior and the U.S. Am. Was that
Did you know Tiger was there?
Did you know this was going to happen?
So I didn't know I was going to get to meet him.
But, I mean, it was so sick.
The U.S. Junior Amateur was awesome.
Since Charlie was in the field, I mean, so I remember I was playing in the first round.
It was at, it was not at Oakland Hills.
No, no, it was at not the main course that they played match plan, but it was the other one.
And I just remember I looked over at Charlie's group and there had to have been five, six hundred people just following their group.
And I was like, because I mean, I'm looking for Tiger.
I'd never seen Tiger in person before.
So when I saw him coming up on whole number nine the next day, I was like, dude, this is sick.
And then how I got to meet him, the handler that that Tiger has, she, I mean, she was like, hey, like, you want to get a picture with Tiger?
And I was like, do I want to get a picture with Tiger?
Tiger Woods?
Of course I want to get a picture with Tiger Woods.
And so they she kind of snuck me around which is I felt like I was you know part of the CIA like there were so many security guards around Tiger so many people just this is after Charlie finished.
So Tiger was kind of walking back and I mean there were just hordes of people following him.
But then the everyone like made like it was like Moses Red Sea like everything parted.
And I got to walk through with security guards and they were like hey, you know, this Tiger Woods.
And I'm like I didn't know what to say.
Yeah.
I didn't know what to say.
I could not tell you anything about what I told Tiger or what he said to me, but I do remember one thing.
His hands felt like two 14-ounce rib eyes.
They were, that's the only way I can describe his hands.
I don't know why.
That's so weird.
The only thing I remember about meaning Tiger was was his hands, but his, I see, that sounds weird to me talking about his hands.
But that's the one thing that I remember about that experience was, was shaking his hand and thinking, man, these hands have hit millions and millions of golf balls.
He's got some hit him way better than everybody else.
But, you know, Slees and I thought, Slees and I are obviously much older than you are.
You were born in, what, 2007?
2007.
That's just so, that's so depressing.
It's ridiculous.
That's when I graduated in college.
Yeah.
We always talk about like our first Tiger memories.
And I mean, ours was, you know, the 97 masters for you.
What's yours other than meeting?
I'm like, what's your first memory of watching him on TV?
My first memory of watching him on TV.
So that's a great question.
The father's son with Charlie.
The PNC last year.
Yeah.
It's super funny.
My coach, Graham Benson, he and I, like, we send a minimum of like five Instagram
reels of just Tiger Woods striping a golf ball every single day.
I'd say the first time I remember seeing him, that's a great question.
When I really, like, I knew who he was, obviously, but I didn't appreciate, yeah, I like that.
I didn't appreciate everything that he and like, realize.
what he's done up until the 2019
Masters. That was sick.
Right? That's crazy. That's like 2019. That's the
comeback like the final, what could
be the final final and for you that's like, oh, this is the
first time. That's wild. Like Tiger to him probably cold is like
Jack to us, you know?
Yeah. Which is strange. Yeah.
It's fair. More or less.
You know, I knew of Tiger before then because
I mean, I started playing golf when I was
I'd say I really started playing golf when I was nine.
But when I, I mean, I've had a club in my hand ever since I was, I don't know, too.
But I didn't really appreciate everything that he's done until 2019.
There you have.
Now your buddies.
That's wild.
Yeah, we're really old, Siles.
Yeah, dude, it's really setting in.
It's really setting in right now.
You mentioned your coach there.
I saw a video you did.
It might have been on your Instagram or something.
It kind of walked through your day, like a typical day in the life of Blades Brown.
Can you go through that?
Because I thought it was pretty, it's a full.
plate. Yeah. Yeah. So I love the gym. The gym is an awesome place to, you know, get work done.
I love lifting weights. I love, you know, the recovery aspect of it. But usually whenever I'm back home,
I'll probably meet with my trainer, Winston, four or five times a week or so. And when I was in person
school, I'm now online school right now. But when I was in person school, you know, I'd have to go
before school in order to have time to hit balls after I went to school.
So I'd usually, I'd be up at like, I don't know, I like to snooze as long as I can
up until I need to get up and, you know, drive to workout.
But I'd say I work out at six, come back, recover, do some school if I need to.
My mom is always on me about that.
She, you know, she gets mad or she's getting mad at me, but she definitely threatened
Smego score. She's like, hey, you don't make this cut. You know what you got to do when you get
back. And I'm like, man, I don't want to be doing that. Damn, mom. Oh, more.
No, no, she keeps me accountable. My dad, it's funny. My dad's like, no, forget about school.
But mom's like, nope, we're going to finish high school right now. So I'm, I'm going to be the
only person on the PJA tour doing finishing high school, or taking high school classes.
So that's, that's going to be nice. But so, yeah, I'll usually do school. Then after that,
I'll go to the balls and then do what I need to do, play a match with a couple of my friends,
then come back.
I'll either watch a movie or play basketball and then pickleball, just depending on the day.
But yeah, then go to sleep and do it all over again.
I love that.
What's your better sport, basketball or pickleball?
That's a great question.
Sound real cocking, just say both.
If you're going to go pro.
Yeah, both.
No.
I'd say basketball right now, but I'm definitely getting better at pickleball.
Dude, I love pickleball.
My mom, she is obsessed with pickleball.
She's more obsessed than I am with pickleball.
It's the greatest thing in the world.
I love it.
When I was in La Quinta or Palm Springs, I saw right across from our house, I saw pickleball courts.
And I said, I immediately grabbed my phone and said, Mom, get the pickleball stuff or plan.
So it was sick.
I love that.
I love that.
If you get stumped on any of these online tests you're having to take, you should find
Gary Woodland.
Gary could really help.
He's really smart, dude.
So if you ever need help.
Especially if it's, yeah, any sociology things.
Yeah.
He's got it down.
Yeah, dude.
He's so good.
Blades probably didn't even know who the hell Gary Woodland is.
You ever heard of Gary Woodland?
I know, I knew who Gary Woodland is.
Yeah, I meant to tell you this,
this, this is once again, we always, we obviously know we're getting old.
But Blades and I were talking when we're at Callaway today about Nashville and some golf and
everything.
I was like, yeah, we joined this place called Bounty Club.
It's right below Kid Rock's house.
And I was like, you don't even know who kid Rockies, do you?
And he's like, damn.
Even from Nashville?
That is.
That'd be like saying Frank Sinatra to us, right?
Oh, my God.
It's tough.
We're old.
It's tough.
We will take you to the bounty club, though, when we go down, which will be sweet.
We can go get our asses kicked around there.
Can you go back real quick when you said I picked the brains of a lot of people before he
made this decision?
Did you?
Was it like tour players you were talking to?
college players, how'd you like, who'd you bounce all that off of?
So, I mean, when you, when I think of the PGA tour, I think of just getting better all the time.
And I mean, you get to play in the Masters, the U.S. Open.
I think a really, really big pillar for me, though, was that I was going to get better.
Like, I was going to get better in college, but I know that I'm going to get better playing
against the best in the world, against the best golf courses.
And so I wasn't, I wouldn't say it's like a singular individual that,
that influenced me to where I was like, yeah, I'm going to do it.
But, I mean, like Ben Griffin, Scott Stallings, Brent Snedeker.
I got to talk to them a lot.
And they were like, I mean, they poured into me so much on, especially Brent and Scott.
Like, Brent Snedeker, he's a natural guy.
He, I mean, I just see all the success that he's had.
And I'm like, that could be me.
So they've definitely inspired me to, I guess, make this decision as well.
you got your first taste of Monday qualifying this past week out in San Diego.
I mean, you played great, ended up losing in a playoff to get into the farmer's insurance open.
But how do you feel about that Monday qualifying life?
It sucks, doesn't it?
It's, it's, man, dude, you just got to go shoot a low number no matter what.
And fortunate enough for me, though, three under was a playoff.
Yeah, that's nice.
I think that just shows how difficult and windy that course was.
Because when you think Monday Q, you're like, oh, you got to shoot 8, 9, 10 under,
part of qualify. But, you know, I gave it, I gave it my shot and unfortunately lost in a three-for-one
playoff. But yeah, we got a lot of those in the future. So we're going to see what happens.
Can you let us know a little bit about like your schedule coming up? We were talking about it a little
bit today. If you can announce anything like where are you planning to play next? What be PJ tour,
corn fairy tour? What do you got going? Yeah. So we're just kind of saying it day by day.
My dad's, he's made it so easy for me to play golf. He's kind of dealing with everything else outside
of golf because I know there's a lot. But my next event's going to,
to be the Mexico open. And then I think we're just going to see what's going to happen from there.
At Vedanta. You have to take a pontoon boat from the hotel to the driving range.
No way. That's so. Maybe bring some floaties. I'm going to, I'm going to have to tap into my
my Spanish classes that I've been taking in high school. See if I can speak some Spanish.
Yeah. Dude, I'm telling you, you're going to like it. The resort's fantastic. That's a good spot.
Let's go. Let's go. I've been told you also have a fun day. You're in San Diego.
Diego right now. Uh, have a fun day coming up this week on Thursday, I believe. Feature pairing.
Where you got? The man, I got the man, the myth, the legend, Phil Mickelson and I are playing.
We're taking on, we're taking on two Latin American guys, I think, that playing on Latin America
tour. Who you got? Who you planning is? Oh, let me look. You and Phil versus those two?
With Phil. Yeah, it's Phil and I against these two guys. Yeah. Oh, no. I know Phil don't
gamble anymore, but if he does, could we get some action?
Let me, hold, we're playing with Justin and Joey, V-R-Z-I-C-H.
I don't know how to pronounce that.
I don't know that.
Okay.
I don't know.
That's going to be exciting.
Yeah.
Yeah.
Have you met Phil?
I've not yet, no.
But I sent him a, he texted me a little while ago, and I said, hey, man, if you can help
me, you know, I'm down $70 in career earnings right now.
If we can kind of get that up a little bit, that would be nice.
but yeah well i promise you he'll play for more than 70 dollars but uh it's gonna be kind of weird
being on his team you're we're talking about it today like it's kind of hard you don't want
to trash talk your own teammate i i only have bad stuff to say yeah fun i think it's great i think it's
great because it's like it's a three to two ratio right now it's it's phil me and phil's mouth
against these other two guys so it's gonna be great god you know him well that's good that's that's
that's his 15th club he can he can chirp with the best of him oh yeah yeah yeah he ain't bashful
Confident. I would say confident would be a good word to describe him when you're out there playing for a few shuckles.
What?
Blades, on a serious note, you should ask Phil when you show up on Thursday what he did with the autograph that Slees gave him.
Yeah, that's actually a great. It's actually a great story.
You should ask him to be a story? Ask him if he still has it. Oh, you want to hear it? All right, I'll try to make it as quick as possible. This is your interview here.
First time I ever played with Phil. I don't know, dude, 15 years ago, something like that, right?
comes to Arizona. We're going to play. Hey, do you want to play with them? Of course. Yeah, I think I do.
I grew up worshiping the guy, right? We get it out there. We play. We get a game. I'm playing
for 400 bucks, which is more than I should have been playing for at the time with an option to press
for half and a lo-ha bet when you're closed out. Exactly. And I had another game of the same and I was
like way over-exposed at the time. Long story short, I closed him out on 17. I beat him two and one.
He pressed for half on 18, but we tied 18. He owes me $400. As we shake hands, as the pin goes in
the green, the 400's in my hand.
Because we're about to go in and have lunch and there's people in there and he doesn't want to
see anyone, him paying money.
Right?
Yeah.
So I'm with like his best friend from college, playing on the golf team with him.
We're walking.
He's like, dude, you know what you got to do.
And I was like, what?
Like when you go in, go get one of the magazines.
If you, our winner of the club championship goes on the cover of the catalog at Whisper Rock
for the year, that's kind of like your thing.
And I'd won it that year.
So I was on it.
And he's like, go get one of those catalogs and sign it.
Give it to Phil.
Yeah, I don't know how you tell the story without it, dude.
And so I was like, should I?
He's like, dude, he'll love it.
So we sit down, sneak away, grab it, grab a Sharpie.
I write, Phil, you have a very nice game.
Dot, dot, dot, dot.
Never give up.
And I go back to the table, wait for the right moment.
I'm like, hey, Phil, thanks so much for coming out.
Dude, you're more than welcome anytime.
By the way, he designed the golf course that we played.
He's like a legend there.
And he takes it, dude.
He was so cool.
He's like, oh, man, thank you so much.
Like, I didn't want to ask you for it, you know, but this makes me feel better.
Fast forward, like two days later, I get a text from Bones.
and he says, Phil wants me to thank you
because he checked into the hotel
under the name Drew Stoltz
and nobody knows who he is.
We've never been left alone more in his life.
And I was like, tusha.
That's good.
So, so, Phil, he's still got it.
You got to be ready.
You got to be prepared when you,
when you talk trash with Phil.
It's awesome.
Yeah.
Even though you're his teammate,
Blades, you still got to give it to him a little bit.
Oh, no, I think that'll fire him up.
Like, see, if we're, if we're losing at some point,
you know, I might have to just throw in something
and then, you know, he's going to start making very much.
Without question.
Those gambling matches, he is, I mean, he's obviously one of the best to ever play the game,
but those gambling matches, man, he is terrifying.
He's tough.
Yeah.
That'll be a cool experience.
I'm sure you'll hit it off with him.
He loves helping young guys, too, one of the cool things about it's why he's been one of the best
like Riter Cup partners, I would argue, for a long time.
But you got connected with him.
Since you had made the decision, played the Amex, have you heard from anyone else that just
kind of shocked you, whether it's text or anything?
email you know i have to check um i mean anyone in particular like you know i've just gotten so many
like text messages from my friends especially like uh i remember i looked down at my my messages and i
had maybe 300 plus text messages and i mean just to get that much support after a golf tournament
just i mean it's it's awesome it's uh it took me a while to respond to them but i made sure
that whatever, whoever text me,
whoever took the time to send me tax messages is,
I responded.
So, I mean, I can't thank my family also enough for just their support.
Like, I mean, dude, you know the drill.
Like, it takes so much effort out here to, I mean, especially for me, like,
because I'm not even worrying about anything.
They make it so easy for me to just go play golf.
But like, whether that's the, my mom going to look out for food,
or we're going to eat for dinner or something like that,
like I'm just so blessed to be in the position than I am.
And then also like Calloway too.
Like they're the best like Caliway and Travis.
I think, which by the way, Travis Matthew has some of the best hoodies.
Like the cloud.
The cloud hoodies are like I sleep in those all the time.
And then I mean, just Caliway equipment is the best in the world.
Got like a true.
Like a true pro.
I mean, I got it.
I saw you out there today, you know.
Grinding.
That was the most balls I've hit in so long.
I got done.
I told Dean Tinkle who, you know,
know out there. I was like, dude, I'm exhausted. Like, we just hit balls for two hours straight.
This is brutal. Yeah, you're going to be sore tomorrow, man. Blades, what do you think?
What'd you think of the act? Do you give him any tips? Or did you pick up any?
From, uh, from this guy right here? Yeah.
Nah, he was, he was focused on his own stuff. I mean, you know, he asked me to hit a couple
shots and I was like, okay, you know, what do you mean to hit? And he was like, high fade.
I was like, okay, low draw. Okay. You know any hard games?
No, it's impressive, man.
Your swing is beautiful.
I love the action.
Obviously, it's 17.
You got a crazy amount of speed.
For the people that haven't seen you play yet,
what would you say the strength is of your game?
And what is the thing you need to work on the most to be competitive out on the PJ tour?
I'd say right now, my strength is my putter.
I love to putt.
I think it's very artistic.
You know, you have to be able to, because, I mean, there are so many different ways to make a put.
like slees i know he's got an insane putting stroke uh and's but i mean every person has
their own way to put um i was playing a pro am with brentz snedeker one time and we uh
the front nine brent and i we didn't make anything like we were put i was put in second or
last he was putting last um but then we go to the back time and brent says all right hold on
i'm going to put first this time he was lights out he didn't miss a single put on the back nine
and what we kind of concluded from that was there are a lot of ways to make a put because
I mean think about it like you have all these people showing you the line showing you what it does
but I think there are there are plenty ways you know to put like for me for example I like to
drip the ball in and it you know some people like to ram the ball in so I think each person has
their own unique unique way to put and you just got to figure out where it works best for you
love that and what part do you need to work on the most you think I'd say
I say just hitting fairways.
You know, to be able to go at some of the pins that, you know, are here on the PGA tour,
you have to be in the fairway, you know?
So I'd just say hitting as many fairways as possible allows me to go out some of the pins,
because, I mean, especially with how firm the greens are too, you know, you got to be able to spend the ball.
And like we were working on new golf ball today, Colton.
And, you know, it's just, it just makes it so much helpful if you're in the fairway, you know.
No doubt.
Got to play from the fairway out there.
What's your cruiser driver speed right now, gamer driver speed?
Nothing weird, just what you play with.
On tour last week, my club head speed was cruising at like 117.15.
That's nice.
But it's super funny.
Like Colton today, while we were hitting balls, my driver club at speed was like 113.
Well, it's cold out there in Carlsbad.
That's why I'm so slow out there too.
I was only like 100 floor today.
You know, normally I'm 110, 118.
somewhere in that boat. You guys are the same.
Same shit.
You know what sad is? I think I'm faster now
that I was four years ago. Five years ago and I still
trying to play. If you're 104, I think you're faster.
That's pretty good, especially in the cold out there.
Yeah, it's chilly out here in Carl's back.
You're just starting to hit your stride.
Maybe it's time to throw your hat back in the ring.
You don't want to see him, Blades.
You want to see, you want to see Colton spinning it.
Can I do a little thing before we get to the E9 here?
Like, we've been talking golf the whole time.
Let's do a little just like get to know Blades Brown,
not golf related type stuff.
Can we ask you just some of these random kind of stuff?
Absolutely.
All right.
I'll start it off here, BG.
Give me the last show you binge watched Netflix or whatever.
Squid Games.
Oh, yeah.
I just watched it too.
I just watched it.
I can't be giving out any spoilers, you know?
It's bloody.
I just want to know if it's good.
Like, I just don't find that stuff.
I don't know.
It's like this.
I thought it was great.
they definitely left a they left you on a huge cliffhanger though
which I'm like I gotta wait another year for this to come out but I mean I love this
good games games are awesome I think they already have it required I think it's coming out soon
because they left you in like the middle of the action you know what I mean so it's already
recorded and it's coming sooner than you think but it's the most watched Netflix show it became
the most watched Netflix show on the planet in like five days or something like that yeah yeah
it's I mean I don't want to give out any
spoilers, but they left you right in the middle of the action.
Yeah.
And I was like, no way.
That's what they do.
They make you hang around and come back for more.
Yeah.
Wait, what they did do that I kind of caught on to, though, was at the end of each episode,
you'd have to watch like another five minutes into the next episode to really be in a position
to say, okay, I'm at a good spot to stop because they always leave going to cliffhanger,
you know?
Yeah.
They ain't no rookies.
They, they pros is what they are.
All right.
Yeah.
I don't know if you listen to music when you practice, but,
if you do or even just driving down the road,
top three songs on your playlist right now.
Top three.
You know what?
I'll look.
Perfect.
They're all songs by Brandon Lake.
Brandon Lake is,
he is,
he's awesome.
Count them,
I know is one of them.
Code of Many Colors.
And then the other one is by Phil Wickham.
Let me,
let me see.
All right here,
hold on.
Pull it up.
So yeah,
code of many colors by Brandon Lake.
battle belongs to you by Phil Wickham
and then
yeah count them
or Brandon Lake those three
okay right there is it bad that I don't know
Brandon Lake is
do you know who he is Colton
Christian song guy they're awesome oh okay
all right I just thought I was I didn't know who was he
I'm not cool anymore I know that so I don't know what's like hip
I was just kind of thinking it might be country because he's a Nashville guy but I didn't know
okay I'm actually not a big country I like my sister she
she's obsessed with country that's
only thing we listen to. And it's like, I'm cultured in that. I'm cultured in pop. I'm cultured and rap.
Like, I'm cultured in all these things. But like when it comes to country, like, I'll listen to it.
But it's all right. You're in the minority in Nashville, but respect to you. Respect to you.
Mason, Nashville. This one could be terrible, but I kind of want to just see where we're out here.
I think I know the answer. But Jordan or LeBron. Michael, Jordan. Yeah, Michael, he played for the Bulls.
He was a good player for the Bulls.
Man, you know what?
I really hope my mom does not see this podcast, but I'm going to say LeBron.
Yeah, I knew that was coming.
It's so tough.
It's so good.
He's so pissed at you.
You see, it just depends on what we're talking about right now, though.
You know, because it's, it's, because like I, I never got to see Jordan play, you know,
so I don't, I don't have a necessarily valid opinion to say who's better, you know?
Have you, this?
Have you watched the last dance?
Yes.
Yeah, yeah, yeah. So, I mean, I definitely see, like, I see both cases to it. It's, like, like I said, I don't have a valid opinion. I'd say I probably, I probably enjoy watching LeBron play just because I've seen him more. But I think that's just a generational issue.
Yeah, of course. I mean, yeah, you haven't seen the guy play. That's when I figured I knew the answer. But he was like Kobe on steroids kind of like just he was just a killer. He's a way bigger of a killer.
Statistically, statistically, like he's the best guy, you know, because he's got.
He's undefeated in, you know, NBA finals on LeBron.
He's not undefeated.
So it's kind of like, eh.
Yeah.
I mean, people, I mean, our age, it's like Tiger or Jack.
And what I call him, Tiger, it's not even close.
But yet Jack's won more majors, but we just didn't see him play.
Yeah.
I'm a big stuff fan, though.
Steph is, dude, I love Steph Kurt.
Yeah.
He, he, so, I mean, I love shooting threes.
And he has been my idol for, I don't know how long in basketball.
Hey, and he's Calloway, too.
So that, you know.
Callaway guy.
loves his golf. He can play some golf too.
He's good. Fun fact, I was actually
caddying in the group when he made the hole
in one at the celebrity event out in Tahoe.
Which was sick. And Colt beat him
to the green when he took off
sprinting. Colt beat him. No, I go,
what are you idiots doing? The ball's in the hole. You don't
have to run and go get it. It's not going to move.
The whole group took off and I was like, where is he?
Where's my guy?
I never popped up. The best part about that is my guy
hadn't hit yet. And he took off running to it too.
And I was like, hey, dude, yeah, you got to come back.
We got a hit.
Yeah.
But that was cool.
Steph's great, man.
Have you had a chance to meet him yet?
I've not.
No.
Whenever I do, if I do meet him, though, I want to challenge him to a shooting contest.
Just because I want to see, like, where my, I'm going to use golf grounds.
I'm going to see where my game holds up, you know.
I have a feeling you'll be the second best in that competition.
You've got to be runner up.
You know, I see, we'll never know if we don't try.
So it's, yeah, we have to see.
Touche.
You're going to get along with Phil.
So great.
Perfect.
All right. Next one. If you could have, which sports team winning a championship would make you the happiest, any of them, because I mean, it can be basketball, football, baseball, hockey, anything. What would bring you the most joy? Oh, really?
Golden State. Yes. So I was obsessed with Golden State when they had the entire team there. Clay, Steph, Draymond, Katie. You know, that was like, that was awesome to me. To be able to see, because Katie left the OKC and came to meet up with Steph and all them. And I was like, they're never losing.
losing any, any finals game ever after that.
So yeah, I'd probably say they're going to say Warriors.
Okay.
Yeah.
Hey, please, are we, are we counting this as the E9?
Sorry, I had to turn the air conditioning off.
No, but he answered a couple of my E-9s already.
So this is just in conjunction, in conjunction with.
I was going to ask you, I got it one or two more depending.
So I'm assuming your favorite non-golf athlete is that, Steph?
Probably.
To your guy.
Okay.
All right.
We're going to my next one, then my last one on these.
give me your most
you accomplish a ton in golf
accomplishment you're most proud of non-golf related
accomplishment I'm most proud of
non-golf related
huh
that is a
hmm wow
you see this isn't good that I'm not thinking
of anything right now
that's a deep question it's a hard question
maybe beating your mom at horse or something
I mean
I when I was young
I got my black belt in Taekwondo.
I probably, I mean, you know, that's a cool, they gave you a little,
they gave me a little ID card that says, I'm the, I'm the, I'm the 50,000 3305th black,
no, 30,000, 535th black belt, I think is what it says.
I don't know.
I think I messed that one up, but it's, they give you a little identification card and
it says what black belt you are in the United States.
So I'd probably say that.
That was cool to hear.
Your dad actually told me that today.
I was going to bring that up.
That's pretty sick.
You have a black belt.
Your name is Blades.
You can whoop out.
Look out everyone.
Get it golf.
Don't mess with me.
And he can shoot.
Allegedly.
Did you know?
I mean,
I know it's your real name,
but did you know there's actually a professional golfer who is nicknamed the blade?
Oh, yeah.
Really?
Frankie.
Frank Licklider.
You probably never heard of him.
He's one on the PJ tour.
Frankie the Blade.
Look him up.
Yes.
Frankie the Blade.
He's somewhere right now happy as a clam.
Yep.
Smoking a sick.
Can guarantee it.
All right.
You want to go to E9?
Yeah, we'll sprinkle on some E-9s here.
Here we go.
All right, we got to ask you this.
You're 17.
I know you don't have a girlfriend.
You're focused on your golf, but celebrity crush right now for Blades Brown.
Hmm.
Don't be shy.
Don't be shy.
Hmm.
Hmm.
Hmm.
Hmm.
Hmm.
Hmm.
Hmm.
Dang.
So I would watch.
Harry Potter growing up, right?
I'd probably say Emma Watson.
She'd probably be the first one that comes to mind there.
All right.
Nice.
Nice.
I probably just said no comment there, but I probably said.
No, you should.
No, she's a listener, dude.
She listens to the show.
Check your DMs.
Yeah, watch out for those DMs.
Be sliding in soon.
Check those things.
All right.
You play the Junior President's Cup under the Seagull,
Charlie Hoffman.
I just want first impression.
When you first met him, first thing that came to mind, what did you think?
Well, I'd known about him just because I finished like this, right?
I finished kind of cut off.
And my dad just kind of always taught me that.
And, you know, Charlie Hoffman does that as well.
So I kind of knew who he was.
And to see him in person, I don't know if I would like, I don't know if this was something weird about me.
But I guess I thought whenever you meet somebody like Tiger or Charlie Hoffman, you like glow.
You know what I mean?
But like, there's no one of people.
Like, well, I know that.
But I also didn't know.
I saw him at the Amex after he was leader after round two.
And I was like, I didn't know you had flow.
I looked at some of his pictures back in the day.
Dude, he had like stuff coming off the sides.
And I was like, what happened?
What did all go?
But, dude, he was such a great cap.
And he, so we ended up, we won the President's Cup.
And my match was still going on.
And so he comes up.
tells us, hey, we won the President's Cup. And I was like, sweet. I still want to win my match,
though. And he was like, okay, okay. And then so I had a shot and I was like, hey, we're still
going to win this match. And he said, show him who's daddy. And I was like, you're telling me,
this guy, my coach, who is a lot older than me, just use slang from my generation. So it was,
I mean, I ended up winning the match. He was sick. I played the number one right damage in China. He
was sick as well.
And it was, dude, Charlie Hoffman's the goat.
No, we're deleting that part.
We're deleting that comment.
Charlie often.
That's the smartest thing he's ever said.
Show him who's daddy.
Speaking of first impressions,
give me your first impression of a grown-ass man named Sleez
in a visor in high socks that you met at the four ball when I believe you were 15.
Come on, Blades.
Fear.
I think there was fear.
Fear is the opposite.
I felt at that point, man.
I saw this dude.
I swear you had on socks this long with a visor.
I will say, though, your haircut was very nice.
That's the thing I noticed first was how clean thought you were.
Thank you, Blaine.
I appreciate that.
Did you think there's no way this idiot's going to beat us?
You know, I saw his teammate, and I was like, okay, this dude looks like he can, you know, fight Floyd Mayweather.
So I better not make assumptions too early.
So, but, and, you know, I was right.
So, kiddies pack down some size, some size.
Do you remember the first hole where we both hit it?
You, I hit, like, I was way behind Blades off the tee, obviously.
But I hit one at like six iron to like three feet.
I was like one up.
Here we go.
And then Blades hit eight iron to like two feet, nine inches.
And we got up there.
I was like good, good.
And Blaze like looked at his partner.
Like he didn't know what to do.
It was like, all right, yours is good.
And I'll put my, he made me puttick.
Can you believe that?
Hold on.
Hold on.
Wait a second.
Wait a second.
Hold on.
Mine was like two and a half feet straight up the hill.
And yours was like three feet down the hill left to right.
And I look at Jackson, my partner, and I'm like, and it was windy.
First hole and I was like, it's early.
I really wanted you.
How far did you have it to me?
Yeah.
How far did you have into that hole?
Yeah, I had like a six iron.
I can still remember it.
I had forever into that hole.
I had 135 yards in and I hit like seven iron, which at the time was like my 165, 170 club.
Yeah.
Nothing wrong with that.
It was hum.
That was, that was a, oh my gosh.
was such a fun match man.
So that's why I came back and told Cole.
Blades and his dad pretty much remember every single shot of this match.
So I'm going to throw one at Blades here.
More impressive shot.
Sleez's top or his chunk that went in the middle of the pond on the par three?
Oh, wow.
Good questions.
I'm going to say, I'm going to say his top just because there was a trash can like 15 yards in front of us.
And it hit a rock and almost went in.
And I looked at Jackson and I was like, I mean, he almost had a home and one right there.
So you never know.
But I will say the most of the funniest shot you hit was the chunk on that par three because you hit it.
And as soon as you hit it, like it didn't even get halfway across the lake.
You just handed your cat to your club and you're like, all right.
Can you stuck it close?
Let's go.
I remember it, dude.
I was trying to get this big slinger with like one less club that I needed to this left pit and I hit seven inches behind the ball.
And it went.
It was great.
A 200 yard hole went 130 into the middle of soup.
It happens.
I'm trying to hit shots.
You know what I mean?
Three wood top.
That's nothing.
Yeah.
Do it on the rag.
Whose turn is it?
Yours.
Okay.
You've answered.
All right, give me game of horse.
You, your mom, and your sister.
What kind of shots are we talking here?
Whatever you want.
You're in the backyard, though.
See, I had three point contest.
You, your mom, your sister.
Who's the favorite?
Okay.
So go any way you want with that.
I'm going to be super humble here.
And I'm going to say, horse, my mom,
just because she has not missed a free throw since, like,
1995, I swear.
She would just kill you so hard with free throws.
Like if you're not 100% free throw percentage, you're done.
You might as well not even, not even try.
Does she talk trash to you on the basketball court?
No, but my sister used to.
You see, when I was this five, not even five foot, like four 11 midget who had no muscle mass whatsoever.
And you got my sister who's five, you know, who was just out, just mass.
is massive that could block my shot and do whatever.
Then fast forward two and a half years later, you know,
it's the exact opposite.
So I'd probably say my mom and horse and then my sister in threes just because she is like
she's a 99 overall and and shooting.
Wow.
Okay.
I'm not there.
I'm getting close.
My one goal for I have a basketball goal this year.
Um, and it's to dunk a basketball.
I'm super close.
I can grab rim.
I can't dunk yet though.
That's one thing I heard you have a sick vertical.
I, well.
I think I'm like 5.9.
I want to say 510 issues, but I think I'm 5.9.
So I can grab rim.
Haven't been able to dunk yet.
I definitely want to do that.
I like that.
Change the stereotype.
I never had that goal.
It's not too late.
You're swinging it faster now.
It's true.
I might start jumping higher here pretty soon.
You might get some hops.
I got one left.
You got any?
Yeah, I got one left for it.
All right.
I'll go first then.
Is it true?
You almost didn't go into the locker room at Myrtle Beach event because there was a sign that said no one under the age of 18 is allowed.
You didn't think you could go in.
That is true.
There was also another reason for that.
I was intimidated by the amount of people that were in there and that were all tour pros.
And being my 16 year old self with nobody around me walking in there, you know, it just kind of felt weird.
So, but it definitely, I did have a joke, though.
Every time I saw a sign like that and there was, because I mean, everything says 18 or older, you know, in order to go in.
And I look at my caddy jacked Beth when I'd say, I'm not 18 yet.
So it's, it was, it was, yeah, that's exactly what happened.
That's so good.
Yeah, he said you literally, it was like, dude, do you think I can go in?
Yeah, I said that to be funny and yeah, yeah, yeah.
Yeah, love it.
All right.
All right.
Can we make a little wager on the show?
Just a little fun wager.
What are we talking?
Okay, because you and Phil are playing on third.
as partners. You are probably pretty big favorites. If you happen to lose and you have to be honest,
because you're going to get asked this question a lot from now on, the reason why you turned pro at such a
young age. If you lose, your answer going forward every time has to be, I never wanted to get
beaten the four ball by Drew Stoltz and Drew Kittleson ever again. That's the real reason, by the way.
That's actually the real reason. But I think in every interview that you're asked, you should have to
say that if you and Phil lose on Thursday. I like that. You know how confident I am. I mean, these guys
are probably really good, but we're going to put up a battle.
Yes. I agree.
Yes. Mark, cut that. There you have it.
I will never root against you in my life blades because I love you, but God, this would be a good one.
And then Thursday might be the day.
If we lose. If you lose, they're going to ask like, you know, why did you decide to turn
pro at such a young age, be like, well, I didn't want to get beat by this podcaster and this guy
that remodels bathrooms, Drew Stulton, Drew Kittleston.
I'm going to say, I see, I didn't want to have to lose.
this remodeling guy that remodels bathrooms.
I forgot his name.
I've never heard of him before.
But yeah, he beat me so bad one time.
Now, I'm not going to say that.
Okay.
You just have to give them a shout out each time.
That's good.
All right.
Dang, that's a lot on the line.
Well, I better tell Phil and I, we better lock in.
Yeah, I love it, man.
Well, dude, we're so pumped for you.
Very excited to see what happens in the future.
Best of luck, T, and thanks for joining us here on Subpar.
Absolutely.
That was awesome.
All right.
That was the young phenom.
Brown joining us on subpar can confirm him and Phil Mickelson did bodybag their opponents.
So he will not be having to use you or Kitty's name in his interviews going forward about
wide term pro sorry.
Which is the biggest loss taken in a long time.
They would have been a great, because he'll get asked it 4,000 times throughout, especially
in the near future, that would have been nice.
Probably the only time I'll root against Blades Brown just because I just wanted to have
some reporter.
So take us through why you decided.
to turn pro at 17.
Well, there's a couple of slap dicks back at the four ball.
This media guy and this bathroom repair guy beat the shit out of us.
And I couldn't take it anymore.
So I had to turn pro.
They figured this would be easier than the four ball.
They were drinking transfusions the whole time.
I figured I had to find a new career.
Luckily, he's bounced back from that.
Like I said, selfishly great news.
Don't ever have to play him again in the four ball.
But I'm a big fan of Blades Brown.
From the moment we started playing, I was like, I got done with that.
I was like, that kid's 16.
Like, he plays like a pro.
Not surprised that he.
He did what he did at the Amex in his first start.
He had a rough start, a rough finish in the middle.
It was spectacular.
Ten birdies and around 64 is a, you know, 17-year-old.
Future's right for him.
Just missed the playoff too, missed in a playoff to get into Tori.
But expect to see him get, I would assume, get the full seven sponsors exemptions.
And hopefully Monday is way into a few more.
Yeah.
It's hard not to root with that kid.
Like, you listen to him.
It's about as nice as they come.
I do like.
He's got some juice personality, not scared to talk.
I mean, we get some young guys on here
are a little shy.
Blades wasn't.
I'm rooting for him.
You know, it was a very interesting choice, in my opinion,
to turn pro.
It's such a young age, but wish him nothing but the best.
Yeah, I expect him to have success.
Is it going to happen overnight?
Probably not.
It does for very, very few, but give him a little runway.
And I think you're going to hear a lot about this kid going for.
He's this young, and there's really not any, like,
holes in his game.
Sure, everything can get better.
But, man, I'll tell you what, he's really good with him.
says that putter.
He makes a ton of puts.
Just can't go into the locker room that says 18 or not.
That's right.
Another year,
and then you can actually go in there
and shower after you're around.
Yeah, got to change my shoes
in the parking lot.
Yeah.
Do you think I,
it says only 18 or over.
Do you think I can go in?
I think that side doesn't count this week.
Yeah, dude.
You have a locker with all your stuff in it.
So, all right, that was a lot of fun catching up with him.
Shout out Blades.
Good luck, Blades Brown.
The rest of this year out on the PGA tour
and wherever you play in professional golf.
Let's get to some football.
The Super Bowl is set.
Super Bowl 59 down in Norland's, Kansas City Chiefs, surprise, surprise playing the Philadelphia Eagles.
God, that is just devastating.
When we did our bold predictions for this year, I believe this is the Super Bowl I had,
which is also like the Super Bowl I wanted the least.
I'm sick of Casey winning everything.
Everything goes their way, every close call, every close game.
They did it again all season long.
Beway, how long can they do it?
Well, I don't know, but at least all the way to the Super Bowl.
I'm getting a little fatigued with the chief,
especially since they're in the same division with the Broncos.
But for you, especially, Philly.
That's tough one.
That was a pounding.
But at least Buffalo and Kansas City just need to play all the time.
They've yet to not deliver like a classic game.
It's always good.
Josh Allen is 0 for four in the playoffs against Patrick Mahomes.
I mean, the guy's unbelievable.
Every game, like you said,
an instant classic comes down to the wire.
Josh Allen played great.
and just got beat.
A couple interesting spots,
third down play,
and also the fourth down play,
which to me it looked like he got the first down,
as well as every broadcaster,
every person on Twitter,
thought he got the first down.
For some reason,
they didn't even measure it.
The dude with his,
whose Josh Allen's back was facing
so he couldn't see the ball immediately ran out
and overruled the other guy
who had a look at where the ball was
on the spot.
And it was just like,
oh, that's it.
This guy's going with his word.
I'm like,
you can't even see the ball.
Oh, we had the chains for a reason.
Measure that shit.
They got a reputation
for getting all the spot.
the calls. I'll just say that I don't know. They're still the best team in football until someone
proves otherwise. But those two plays, that spot and that catch from Xavier Worthy, that
could have been incomplete, could have been a lot of things. They say he had control the ball.
Like, those changed the entire outcome of the games and they both went their way. But they don't
need help. They're good. As long as 15's there, they're a problem.
I did see some funny tweets. I said the reason Patrick Mahomes wears 15 is because that's
me of yards you get if you touch him.
I like that.
I like that.
In their defense, they didn't have any, like, egregious, like, you know,
roughing the passers or when he tiptoes down the sideline and maybe he's going to go out,
maybe doesn't, and you don't know, and then he bates you into a late hit, that type of stuff.
He didn't have any of that.
In that other game where the Eagles just smashed the commanders, hung 55 on them.
They scored seven rushing touchdown sleeve.
The Dallas Cowboys had six all year.
Good news for you.
You came with the blockbuster high.
the one everyone was calling for.
Help is on the way.
Shottnheimer, promoted from within.
Who didn't have him as the next coach of the Dallas Cowboys?
Your immediate reaction to the news when you heard it.
I didn't even know he was on the coaching staff.
To be honest, because Mike McCarthy called the plays.
They're like, oh, we're promoting the offensive coordinator.
I'm like, isn't that Mike McCarthy?
I know he's the head coach, but he's O.C. calls the plays.
Yeah, Brian Schottnheimer, here we go.
We got Iber Fluse from Chicago, who, by the way,
is a great defensive coordinator.
Yeah.
I'm okay with that.
He has been.
Bringing him in.
But I was like, at the start, I said anybody but Dion,
because I thought that was going to be a fucking disaster having him come in.
It was just going to be all the hype, all the everything is going to open up with.
Oh, here's Dion and the Dallas Cowboys.
Didn't get him, but I did not see Brian Callahan.
Jim Nance didn't inform me.
Great dude.
Great coach.
Schottenheimer.
Yeah.
You mean?
Who did I say?
Callahan.
Oh, yeah.
Whoever.
Brian Schottheimer.
Yeah.
Yeah.
That's where it was.
Brian Schotenheimer.
Great dude.
Great coach.
And a big golfer.
So, Nancy likes you, I like you.
There you go.
Lance likes everyone, though.
I don't want to call it early, but this could be a future dynasty for the Cowboys.
This is the one missing piece.
Brian Schott and you got him.
Okay, enough with the Cowboys.
I'm sick of them.
Let's get back.
Let's go back to your rushing touchdown.
Let's get back to the Super Bowl.
Patrick Mahomes, with this win over the Bills, just became second on the all-time
playoff wins list with 17.
Okay, this is just assuming because they win the AFC West every year.
Okay, if they win the Super Bowl,
Bowl, then win the AFC West the next six years in a row.
That means they get a buy.
And they win the next six Super Bowls.
Patrick Mahomes will pass Tom Brady's all-time playoff wins with 36.
Tom Brady has 35.
So a nine Pete.
Because they're going for a three.
So a nine Pete, he'll get it done.
By the way, he's ahead of where Brady was at this point.
All he's done is, oh, I'm the starter.
Here's when we're going to win the AFC.
We're going to go to the AFC championship.
He's never not played in the AFC championship game.
I mean, it's disgusting what he's done.
As long as he's there, I don't care.
Fill in, Kelsey will leave, cool.
Put somebody else in.
They'll lose whiteouts.
Doesn't matter.
As long as they can catch the football.
They're going to be fine.
And he does rely on, like, he uses his feet, but he doesn't like rely on him.
He could age.
I mean, the game's just slow for him.
He could be good for another decade, probably.
I mean, if he stays healthy.
Which is disgusting.
Why not?
I mean, they should trade him out of the AFC West.
I believe this is now his seventh season as the starter.
You mentioned this is his fifth Super Bowl and two AFC championship games.
I mean, he's never gone less than the conference championship game.
It's unbelievable.
If he stays healthy, look out.
I mean, they're going to be a problem for a very long time.
I mean, they lost Tyreek Hill and they won two Super Bowls in a row, and they're going for their third.
Tyreek wanted to get paid when got paid, and then I was like, I want to be on a good team.
Okay.
Maybe pick one.
Since we do have two weeks before the Super Bowl, we're not going to make any picks, but we'll just say right now,
It opened at Kansas City minus 1 and a half, has recently moved to minus 2 down in New Orleans,
and the over under is 49 and a half.
So go to your research.
Next week's podcast, we will make our picks for the Super Bowl if you're feeling all right after the Phoenix Open.
It's coming, bud.
It's a week away.
And just so you know, we are talking low 80s early in the week and then mid-70s,
no rain predicted right now for the WM Phoenix Open off of last year.
It is going to be unreal.
Take a picture of what you look like right now because next week, probably not, or two weeks now, not going to be quite the same.
I'm getting sweaty hands just thinking about the anxiety levels through the roof.
It's a long week.
It's the greatest week, but it's a long-ass week out there.
And knock on wood, the weather looks unbelievable.
Stay like that.
That would solve a lot of problems.
And the theme this year is better, not bigger.
So we're looking for a smooth run this year at the WM Phoenix Open.
But it's coming.
You're going to be out there.
I'm going to be out there every day.
And we'll come back on Monday and do this.
And we'll sound terrible like we always do, most likely.
I'm sitting here with the player liaison.
I've already reached out to pretty much the entire field, said here's his number.
Request anything.
I am liaising right now.
Things are coming in.
Things, requests, questions, all of it.
We're getting it buttoned up.
We're getting it buttoned up.
We're sending us planes up the pebble.
We pick up the boys, bring them down.
We're going to have a hell of a week.
Yep.
Cannot wait, but this week, AT&T, Pebble Beach, star studded field, signature event.
Scotty Sheffler returns, makes his season debut, as does Jordan Speath.
It's going to be awesome.
I'm heading out there right now.
It's going to be a great week out at Pebble Beach.
And special thanks to our guest, Blades Brown.
Congratulations, Harris English.
And that's it.
We'll see you next week on Golf Subpar.
