Starting point is 00:00:00 These guys know how to play golf. Yeah, we overanalyze it with all this stuff. And it just drives me nuts, man. I just don't get it how we can be so bad at a format with such good players. I told you this on radio because we were trying to come up with ideas earlier. It's a ballsy experiment, but I would just love to see if it would actually work, like an alternate shot. We got Scotty and Sam Burns together.
Starting point is 00:00:25 Going out first. They're going out first. These two know, they're used to play an Indeatine. individual stroke play because we didn't grow up play an alternate shot. All right, here's the deal. Scott are you're teeing off on the odds. You're going to hit your T shot. You and Ted Scott are going to discuss your strategy off this T.
Starting point is 00:00:39 Sam Burns is going to meet you down in the fairway. He's not involved in his decision, him and Travis Perkins. Okay. Second shot. After Sam goes and finds it, whether it's in the fair way or the rough, he's going to go over there and talk to Travis and hit it while you're going to meet him up by the green. And then you and Teddy can go read the birdie put.
Starting point is 00:00:55 And if you all make a birdie, win the hole, fist bump. Good job, dog. That was good. let's see you on the next. Yeah. It just like, you know how to play the game. Well, this ought to be a fun one today. The boys are playing a little hurt coming off a weekend in Nashville for the Bounty Club member guests.
Starting point is 00:01:23 We'll get to that in just a little bit, but sleaze as you cough. Rub a little dirt on it. Everything's fine. No one panic. Good to be back in Scott's day with you. Pleasure. Pleasure. Long weekend.
Starting point is 00:01:36 Great weekend. We got a lot of bounty club to get to. and got, just as we expected, U.S. wins the President's Cup. Yeah, easy. 1713, just kind of a cruiser. Man, you know, you and I were playing golf all weekend long. We're keeping track of what was going on,
Starting point is 00:01:52 but weren't like watching shot by shot, living and dying by everything. But we're sitting there on Saturday, and I'm like, they're going to lose the President's Cup. I mean, this is unbelievable. Like, this team, this is like the dream team playing just some random country, basically. They are such big favorites, minus 550 favorites going into this thing.
Starting point is 00:02:13 And all of a sudden, you look up the scoreboard Saturday evening, and it is, we're down three. And three is a lot when it comes to just 12 singles matches left. I mean, it's the second team of in a row where we need like a miraculous Sunday in singles. We've delivered it both times, come up just short at Beth page. This one, we grease it out. It was like the opposite, you know, of the first few days where it's like the U.S. would have leads on the back nine, one-up type deal.
Starting point is 00:02:36 They get flipped and go the other way. or at least flipped and halved, and then, you know, international's just found a way to get points on the board. Singles opposite, for whatever reason. Like, that's where we go, especially on home soil.
Starting point is 00:02:48 Ogilby mentioned it at the end, you know, he's like, look, we knew going in U.S., playing singles in America, that's a hard thing to do. We did the same thing at Bethpage, but like, we just found a way to get it done.
Starting point is 00:02:57 But the fact that we keep putting ourselves in this position where we go into Sunday is like, hey, all it needs to happen is you all need to win. And no one lose, basically. And like, we pulled out some matches yesterday that were one up their way that flipped and changed everything. But like, you know, the big conversation is like, what's wrong with the U.S. and team golf? I don't know that we have a
Starting point is 00:03:16 team golf problem. I think we have an alternate shot problem. We have a forsooms problem because we get our absolute shit kick across the board. Dude, in the president's cup, where we are massive favorites on paper. We'll get our world golf rankings compared to theirs. It's not even close. Like you said, five to one. This is the second consecutive cup where we got five-o blitzed on Friday. Yeah. We have not one of match. alternate shot with 24 of the best players on planet earth i don't care what pairings you put out what data you use blindfolded just pick them that's unbelievable uh and you go back to the writer cup historically opening session uh of since 2023 in rome writer cup president's cup writer cup president's cup we are
Starting point is 00:03:56 one and 17 in opening session of alternate shots yeah yes yeah that's i mean dude i don't care what format you to pick pairings that's unbelievable There's something wrong. 8 and 26 since Rome. 8 and 26 overall in that format, yeah. I don't get it. And I know the whole thing going into the Ryder Cup every year is the Europeans, you know, they have more experience.
Starting point is 00:04:20 They played it growing up. The Americans didn't. Okay, well, what about in the President's Cup? Do the internationals? Maybe they did too as well as well. But I'll just tell you this. As a guy who's played alternate shot, you've played alternate shot, I've done it at the Walker Cup.
Starting point is 00:04:33 Like, it's still a golf ball on a whole. and you have the best in the world doing it. All you got to know is, hey, Sleese, you're going to hit, and then I'm going to hit. You're a good player to do that. And then you're going to hit again. Like, it's just, I don't understand how we get our ass whipped every single time in this format. Like, what do we got to do to figure out how to just keep it somewhat close in this format?
Starting point is 00:04:57 Because if then, if we did, then we wouldn't have to be panicking every single year at the Ryder Cup and how we almost panic this year at the President's Cup. Yeah, and so like they grew up playing it. I'm like, when? when they were 13, these guys have been playing on the same tour as us for a long time. There's no alternate shot that I know of other than the Zurich and only a few of them play it. So where are they getting all this alternate shot practice that we're not getting somehow? And it's not just an anomaly.
Starting point is 00:05:22 Like you could just throw it away. Like when we go to the first two days of the Ryder Cup at Beth Page, you and I were there. We watched it. And I was like, dude, I don't care what data, what analytics, who you paired with who. Europe made everything. And as good as Eduardo Mol and Arias, he is. ain't hitting these puts and they were unbelievable and I don't know what we could have done. That's just the best team golf I've ever seen for two days, period.
Starting point is 00:05:44 But when you skip, that's one, that's two days, right? Dude, this has been going on now for, you know, four consecutive team events. Like, it's more than an anomaly. It's always the case. You can't just throw it out and like, oh, they made puts, we didn't. Sometimes that is the case. But when you're talking one in 17, 8 and 26, like with the best players, the team that is favored in all of these and heavily favored in the President's Cup, getting
Starting point is 00:06:06 are just, I mean, we're just getting dummied in these things. Like, there's something that whatever we're doing, like, we should change it because it ain't working. You go back to Beth Page and all the criticism was, oh, how could you ever throw Harris English and Colin Moore out there? According to Datagall, like, statistically, they're the weakest team we could possibly throw out there. Okay, excuse me, it's two top 25 players in the world.
Starting point is 00:06:30 I'm pretty sure they know how to hit a golf ball on every single hole. You could take this entire team we had right now at the president's cup. team because look, we won this thing, but this should have been a blowout. Okay, but when you go back and look at it and you break it down and everyone on social media, every analyst will say, oh, you shouldn't put him with him, him, him with him. Like, you take these 12 guys, you throw their name in a hat and Brant Snedeker goes, all right, boys, first off, we got a, we got Justin Thomas. He's going to play with Sam Burns.
Starting point is 00:06:58 Oh, we're fucked. They're done. I mean, no, you're never going to say that. He doesn't have never held a club before. And major champs. I don't care who you pair with who. These are the best in the world. This isn't like, hey, we're taking Scotty Sheffler
Starting point is 00:07:11 and going to put him with like a dude in the sea flight of the club championship. He's playing alongside one of the best there is. And there's just something about this format. I don't know if it's now just mental, that they panic going into it. But something has got to change in this format or else this is going to continue to happen
Starting point is 00:07:29 because that team over there in Europe, we're not big favorites like we are in the President's Cup. I mean, this thing is tight. This is 12 on 12. This is battle. And it's going to be very difficult for us to go over there and win on foreign soil with how we play in two of these sessions, which is obviously both foursomes. Yeah, and I'm totally with you.
Starting point is 00:07:51 Like, there are no bad parents. Are there somewhere the data says this team should be better or this team should be better? And I especially think that matters in foursomes. Because, like, I think there's a way, like, do you pair like, like, minded players together, to you're by personality, to be paring by this game compliments, this guy's well. In best ball, it's like,
Starting point is 00:08:09 here's two of the best players in the world. Go make birdies. If you happen to fuck up a hole, I can adjust and make sure we don't, you know, make bogey on this. But mostly it's go make birdies and just play your best golf. And we're okay in that format. And the four sons. We're great. There's a mind-blowing stat where it's like, like, over the, since
Starting point is 00:08:25 the 20-23 Rome on those four team events, we have gotten our asses handed to us. We have made fewer bogey. during that time, then our opponents and the matches that we've played. And we have made half as many birdies. So I don't know if it's like a strategy thing we get in there like, hey dude, it's alt-shot.
Starting point is 00:08:41 Like if we just play it safe, hit fairways, hit greens, tupe up, make part, let them beat themselves. If that is the strategy, like it ain't working. And typically that's kind of the thought process, I would say, for alternate shot, is it not? But it's like, maybe the international side is like, all right, dude, they're better on paper.
Starting point is 00:08:58 You know, like we're supposed to lose this. We're going to have to take some risks. that we maybe normally wouldn't take you get a wedge you get a nine-in i want you firing out i don't care if you worry don't worry about short side me or anything and maybe the u.s is like i just hit this you know 25 feet left and and take our chances but we're making we got the best players in terms of the rankings and we're making half as many birdies yeah in the format like that doesn't pencil that that can be your hundred percent right total strategy thing because alternate shot is difficult but when you have big fairways and soft greens like we did at beth page and we did this past week
Starting point is 00:09:30 at Medina, you got to go. You know this, playing in a stroke play tournament. If there's a bunch of rain leading into the week, I mean, every player in the field knows, okay, there's going to be a shootout. Like, we got to go. There's no playing conservative here because these guys are so good at this level that if I tell you, you have 167 yards, every damn one of them can land it exactly 167 yards. And when they know it's going to stop right there, it takes all the guessing, all the thinking out of the equation. It's like, hey, we got 172. Well, guess what? Eight iron was 172. There's the flag. Hit it at it. Yeah. I mean, you just know that going in. Look at what Justin Thomas did to that place back in whatever year it was. It shot a trillion under. It was 8,000
Starting point is 00:10:09 yards and it was soft. And they got big fairways. I just don't like, I think at the end of this, when we break it down and there's also a problem where there's like an over-analization of everything. Like the, you know, live from leading in their break, we got hours and hours, days leading into into this thing, breaking down every single little thing, pairings, golf course, set up, you know, everything you can do where I think there's like an over analysis in some of this stuff because like any pairing that loses we go back and look like if it's a a buddy team a Sam Burns and a Scotty chef where it's like well dude they're just friends they want to play together like that doesn't that's not what the data points to right but then you can go over on the other side and
Starting point is 00:10:46 look at like a use a writer cup example uh you tell me tyrolatton and john rom are statistically data wise like the marquee pairing for both format they play together and everything and they dummy people. But it's like, that's a great pairing. Those guys love each other. It's like, damned if you do, damned if you don't. If you go with like, these guys think alike, they play like, like, Coyvin and JT, perfect example.
Starting point is 00:11:07 They were like, we knew they were going to be together. Is the data say those are the two marquey guys? No, but they went out in one and they're like-minded. It's like, great job. That was a smart pairing. Those two guys really thrive together. But then when other ones don't work out, we've got to use more data.
Starting point is 00:11:21 I think we just overanalyze this thing. But there's something on the alternate shot side where it's like, there's enough data here that we just get drummed that we're doing something wrong. And unless I'm unaware, I don't know the internationals are just playing a shitload of alternate shot leading up to this thing. And we're not, or the Europeans are doing the same thing. And maybe in our team sessions, that needs, something needs to change. Maybe that should be the emphasis going forward because everywhere else, we're fine.
Starting point is 00:11:46 But we just dig a massive hole. And we can dig out of it in the President's Cup because there's more points around, right? A little harder in the Ryder Cup. Yeah, I would love to know what goes on. with the analytics team. And, you know, I sit beside Justin Ray at the Masters. He's the best in the business. But I want to know what makes a pairing of Sam Burns and Scotty Sheffler
Starting point is 00:12:07 analytically say like, oh, that's a team we should put out there. I want to make why you would not have the best putter on the planet not playing foursums and Jacob Bridgman. Why are you paying him? Biggest birdie maker on tour. Yeah, exactly. You make a ton of birdies. Why are you not playing in that format?
Starting point is 00:12:24 Why are you only playing in this one? Why are him and Russell Henley supposedly a good team? Because you want to know why I think so? Because they hear that they play a lot of practice rounds together. It just, I don't, I really, dead serious, would love to sit here and be told, like, okay, the reason this team works is because based off these numbers, this is why. I'm like, what are those numbers? Because all I know is you have 24 of the best in the world at these team competitions, team team, team, team, team, team, team, team, on a golf course that everyone can figure out. out how to play. But yet in one format, we are completely lost. Lost. Lost. And there's things you can
Starting point is 00:13:03 I've said this a million times. I'll continue to read it at it. On a large scale, I think the captain gets way too much credit when teams win and way too much blame what they lose, with a few exceptions and bad decisions or great decisions. Paul Ezinger, I thought he was phenomenal. The fact that he hasn't been involved in any team building or any capacity in any of these teams going forward since Valhalla is crazy, is crazy to me. And secondly, on that, like, I think the data, which gets referenced so much, can be, like, overblown because, like, you look at this. They got all the strokes gained data out for this tournament.
Starting point is 00:13:36 Shout out to Data Golf for doing that. Wyndham Clark went one and four in this tournament. You go back and look at this, like, oh, Windham played terrible. We went one and four. He got bodied. He was the third best player on property, and he just had a partner that didn't make putts a lot of the time, you know? As far as, like, strokes gained.
Starting point is 00:13:50 Strokes gained like a cross because he can't do like score obviously because you're playing match play but he was the third best player and all the all the stats out there. Cam Young was the best Sung J.M. who was a joke by the way. He was second. So it's like you look at that and like oh he he's a bad match play player or bad in the team events but it's like he played the best golf and some other guys like Scotty and JJ at Beth page like I went out and lost and was an alternate shot and they shot a bunch
Starting point is 00:14:17 under and just got beat. Was that best ball? Yeah, they lost him best. while they were nine under part through 16. Nine under through 16. It's like, oh, look at that. Bad pairing. Why did you put them together?
Starting point is 00:14:26 But if they go and win, it's like, that's great. I just, I don't know. It's an imperfect science, but it just seems like damned if you do, damned if you don't. Look, in these, the statisticians, the analytics, they can help a lot. And I know a lot of guys out on the PGA tour more than ever before. I mean, they rely on these guys before each round. Like, I know they get with the caddies. They break down a hole.
Starting point is 00:14:48 but I'm like, some of this is common sense. Like, 18 at TPC sawgrass. Hey, Sleys, guess what? Don't hit it left today off the tee. It's bad over there. No shit. It's a fucking pawn. Like, I don't need a statistician to tell me that.
Starting point is 00:15:02 Hey, if a pen's on the right, hey, it's really not good to shortside yourself over here. I get it. If you, they can break down and they can do some stuff here and there. We're like, hey, to this pen, we've seen like 78% of the people get it up and down. So it's okay to go ahead and take this one on. Stuff like that. But most of this stuff, like these guys,
Starting point is 00:15:18 know how to play golf. Yeah, we overanalyze it with all this stuff. And it just, it drives me nuts, man. Like, I just don't get it how we can be so bad at a format with such good players. When I told you this on radio, because we were trying to come up with ideas earlier. When we were talking on Sirius XM, it's a, it's a ballsy experiment, but I would just love to see if it would actually work, like an alternate shot. Okay, we got Scotty and Sam Burns together.
Starting point is 00:15:45 Going out first. They're going out first. These two know that they're used to play an individual stroke play because we didn't grow up play an alternate shot. All right, here's the deal. Scotty, you're teeing off on the odds. You're going to hit your T shot. You and Ted Scott are going to discuss your strategy off this T. Sam Burns is going to meet you down in the fairway.
Starting point is 00:16:01 He's not involved in his decision, him and Travis Perkins. Okay. Second shot, after Sam goes and finds it, whether it's in the fair way or the rough, he's going to go over there and talk to Travis and hit it while you're going to meet him up by the green. And then you and Teddy can go read the birdie put. And if y'all make a birdie, win the hole, fist bump, good. job, dog, that was good. Let's see you on the next. Yeah. It just, like, you know
Starting point is 00:16:22 how to play the game. You pay Ted Scott a shit ton of money. You pay all the guys pay their caddies a shit ton of money. Y'all are a team. All of a sudden, every year in these formats, we start bringing in guys to discuss what the putt's going to do, where he should hit it here. All I need to know is that you are going to try your ass off on every shot you have. Don't ask me where you want me to leave it. You just figure out what you think is the smartest shot and the best shot and hit it. Yeah, the putting stuff to me. I've said this for years is the craziest thing. I'll be like, all year long,
Starting point is 00:16:52 it's either you by yourself or you and your caddy reading putts and you've been good enough to be on a Ryder Cup team or a President's Cup team. Clearly the shit works. And then like going back in the day, here's Steve Stricker, the best putter on planet Earth. And he's like, oh, hey, let me call in so-and-so. I'm calling Hunter Mayhan to get his look at this. You know what I mean? It's like, dude, you're the best in the world. Like why? I think there's too much like maybe involving your partner and some of that stuff, especially on the putting. But I mean, dude, your experiment where it's like just handle your shots by yourself, don't even consult with the other one.
Starting point is 00:17:21 What could, could it be worse? Like, oh, that's a stupid fucking idea. Oh, really? Do you think it could go better than one in 17 in opening sessions? I mean, I could blindfold, throw it at the wall and be like, play with seven clubs and we could go better than one in 17. There's, there's, like, I will continue to harp on it. I think data matters a little bit in the alternate shot stuff, but I think it's overblown.
Starting point is 00:17:43 And the captain's getting so much blame when two great. players go out and lose a match, you know, it's like, what were you thinking? I don't know. I was thinking two of the best fucking players in the world might be able to go out and play a little bit of good golf together. That being said, I do think there were a few things this week where I was like, what are, this is a mess up that, you know, and you got to point him out. Bridgman, not playing best ball ever when he makes a ton of, he makes more buries than almost anybody on the PJ tour. I like to have him out there, like to have him hitting all the putts instead of just half the putt's being that he's the best putter out there. Going to singles, huge deficit. I got
Starting point is 00:18:16 You want to get your dogs out early. You want to get some red on the board, get the momentum going. Throwing Scottie Shepler out first and allowing them to throw a lame duck and Nico. It was our turn to throw it. It was, but you got a million dudes you could put out.
Starting point is 00:18:30 He wasn't the first overall. Yeah, not the first overall. No, but we offered him when it was our turn to lead, right? Scottie Shepler. Dude, I'm Jeff Ogil and like, are you perfect? Here's Nico, who we've been trying to hide all week,
Starting point is 00:18:43 who's statistically the worst guy here, probably would be an, underdog to any dude on the United States squad. Also, Scott Schaeffler, huge favorite over anyone in the world, much less on the international side. Like, you're taking two expected points there. Scott, you expect Scotty to be anyone that he plays in singles, right? And you would expect Nico, probability-wise, to lose to anyone he plays.
Starting point is 00:19:05 That should be two U.S. points that you should have a huge advantage in. And he took it and made it won. You're taking your best and they're worse. No one final. Horrible. Got her up. Throwing him out in what, match six. Same guy was a stud this week.
Starting point is 00:19:19 How about match him when they throw it? They're going to, they got to throw out some guys too, first off, you know? Wait for them to throw Nico or sit on it. Yeah, you're trailing. And so they're just, they're trying to figure out how they can do this. They need five points to win.
Starting point is 00:19:31 That's their goal. Five out of 12. They're going to figure it out. And if they're going up against the Cam Youngs, the Chris got up from the Scotty Sheffler, it's like, okay, we can lose those three. We already forfeited those, basically. But do not let one of those three lose to Siwu or Tom Kim.
Starting point is 00:19:46 or one of your one of your big guns exactly like just like that example i was like that's two points that you have a big event and you turned it into one and when you need every point possible out there like there were some things that um and it ended up working out but you got they got to match christian bazaid note a go up against goder up like good luck if you can even scare this guy it's a win for us nico if you can even if you can get him to 16 that'd be great just drag him out a little bit But like we're taking two points and turn them into ones when we need it, like that type of stuff. And like that'll be forgotten because guess what? We went out there and won't be one by seven in the last day.
Starting point is 00:20:24 So that won't get pointed out that much. But if we had lost by a point, it's like, dude, you got one out of Scotty and Nico, like that combination. You got one out of Goddra up and Christian. That shouldn't be happening. Like that's, and that's, I don't think you need two issues of preparation and a statistician sitting next to you to realize, hey, let's wait and get when they throw out see. or one of their guys, then let's give them one of our big dogs. You know, don't let them match what their guys they're trying to hide. And I know being a captain is hard.
Starting point is 00:20:52 There's a lot of pressure that comes with it. I mean, you're the one putting the squad out there. But I know Scotty wasn't on his game. He was two and one through three sessions. But even when he's not on his game, he is damn near better. He's probably still better than every single player on their team. I mean, his bad weeks, he finishes seventh in a PGA tour of him to sit him. I was on the golf course
Starting point is 00:21:17 at Bounty Club, and I was like, wonder how we're doing. And I'm looking, I'm like, this doesn't say Scotty Schaeffler's playing anywhere on here. There's got to be a mistake. No, we sat him, and I'm like, As Cara Banks, I felt about that. She's going to get to the bottom of that. Yeah, so look, they won.
Starting point is 00:21:35 That's great. They should win. Shout out to the singles matches. Thank God for that. We're really good at that. I believe it's 18 to 6 now in the last two team competitions in singles play between the Ryder Cup and the President's Cup. I don't know what was said Saturday night.
Starting point is 00:21:48 Snedge, you obviously said the right things. You got the boys fired up. They went out there. They took care of business. It was just a wild week. I know Brandt was trying to take all the blame. Early in the week said he made a lot of mistakes, did not set them up for success.
Starting point is 00:22:02 And then they asked in the press conference after the win, like, how do you feel about that? And Senator goes, 100% agree. Obviously joking around. Yeah. But there are things you can point to. I mean all the blames on them, you know, like for them being down. But this whole narrative, and I know Snedd said this in his interview afterwards.
Starting point is 00:22:22 I know he wasn't very happy with the questions he was asked Sunday morning while his squad's getting ready to go out there. And I mean, he said, hey, you asked me some tough questions this morning in the live interview. He goes, but I'm so proud of this team for how they busted their ass. They went out there and gave it everything they had and they got the job done. but he is so tired of this team saying this people's the media is saying these teams aren't close like they're not friends they have no camaraderie he goes that's the biggest bunch of bullshit there is and i agree with you because i can i get to spend 22 weeks a year out there i've known a lot of these guys for a long time but to say that some of the guys on the team the last several
Starting point is 00:23:04 years between president's prep and rider cup are not friends or there's no camaraderie is the biggest crock of shit there is they need to get rid of that that that the Europeans and the Ryder Cup like hanging out with each other more than the others. Scott out works. Scott and Sam hate each other. Yeah. Sandor and Katla. I mean, these guys are all like, got her up. Everyone loves them. Like, that's a, I feel like that's such a played out narrative. I'm glad Brian Brandt said something about that. I think that's kind of gone to bed a little bit, but it's just like, no, dude, that's like we, they used to be like, they're all, they're 12 individuals and they're a team.
Starting point is 00:23:34 I'm like, what does that mean? These guys all hang and travel. They've been playing since junior golf together. They're standing up at each other's weddings. Oh, this. isn't a close team. Like, that stuff, that stuff makes no sense to me. Most of that team rents houses together. Yeah. All year long, out on the road. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:23:50 And when you're like over, in the over-analization stuff when we start talking about, like you listen to like Brandl on Live From. It's literally like math. Here's how this shit's going to work. And that's the end of it. Like, these stats are accumulated over an entire year, over 72 holes of stroke play. And then you're expecting to say the exact same for 18 holes of match play in a
Starting point is 00:24:09 different format. Like, you don't play the same way. You don't get the same stuff. It's also just like a tiny sample size where it's like, all right, you've got an 80% free throw shooter, going up against a 70% free throw shooter. Over the course of the season, 80% guy is going to make more. If you went up there and said, hey, shoot one free throw,
Starting point is 00:24:26 the 80% guy could miss and the 70% guy could make. Like, it's not all math. And I think, like, there's something here where, like, guys overperform their stats. There's certain team players that overperform their stats. Look at Ian Poulter. Perfect example. Never won a major.
Starting point is 00:24:41 wasn't a winning machine on like either tour. He got to that thing, dude, he's a fucking killer. You couldn't pick a guy. I'd rather have hit a 10-footer that mattered for everything. Then Ian Poulter. Sergio Garcia. Horrible putter. Would I want a bunch of majors.
Starting point is 00:24:54 Goes to the Rider Cup. All of a sudden makes everything. Those guys overperform their statistics. Tom Kim has been an absolute monster in this thing since he got out there. Like, he's a perfect example of it. And then there's certain guys that, like, underperform. There is something that you can't quantify with just data and saying, like, this dude loves the heat.
Starting point is 00:25:11 This dude loves the moment. Jackson Coivin looks like he's one of those guys. Like, vindication for Brant, by the way, as much you want to drag him, his guy's picks went 6 and 0 in singles yesterday. Jackson Coivin was a, I wish we saw more of him. He looks like he's got that dog. One of the coolest moments. I mean, the walk after the T-Shod 18, the club twirl on the second shot 18
Starting point is 00:25:31 looked like Tiger at Harding Park. But you're right. There are guys that just, they love this stuff. The moment. I think Justin Thomas loves this. I mean, I know he wants to. win major championships, but I promise winning a Rider Cup is up there for him.
Starting point is 00:25:44 That's how much he loves these. And Ian Poulter, I said this to you earlier. When Ian Poulter showed up at a Ryder Cup, he had the aura and people had the confidence in him as people had in Tiger in 2000. Just that one week year. Next week, he's playing alongside two guys
Starting point is 00:26:01 and you might not even hardly know in a not-so-featured group. You're paired with him Saturday. I played with him quite a bit. I played quite a bit. And I'm not walking around the Rider Cup inside the ropes. So there are. Sergio Garcia, when I ask you, what's the worst part about his game throughout his career? The only thing that sucks. Potter, he would have won numerous. Yeah, and he looks like Ben Crenshaw. He gets up there. And he was 19 years old.
Starting point is 00:26:26 Exactly. Like, there's certain guys where he's just like, you got to, like, they are a different guy. They like the moment. They like it more. Reggie Miller was a great shooter. You know what he's the best? When it was a game winner on the line. I'd rather have him than a guy shot a higher percentage. Like there's just a certain thing about that thing. Or exactly. Exactly. Exactly. It's with Spike sitting there. Like, there's just guys that are like that. Jackson seems to be a guy that's like that. You get on the flip side of that, be like, Russell Henley,
Starting point is 00:26:49 unreal player. Six in the world. Plays great all the time. Team events hasn't quite had it for whatever reason. You can nitpick it or not, but it's like, I think there's enough data there to support that. So I think we look at this thing like a perfect science. Like the Euros haven't figured out. They got Eduardo Monari, and they have some secret sauce where his pairings are like,
Starting point is 00:27:06 dude, it's over before it starts. They've outsmarted us. I don't think it's the case. I do think that, but we got to do something. Let's make you, Jim Furrick, you're in charge. We're going to Adair next year. You see all this. We get dominated, especially in opening session, but just as a whole in alternate shot.
Starting point is 00:27:23 What you do? Do you have some team meetings and like, you like, all, we're playing two days of this? I'm going to go to the PJ of America and say, I got an idea. We're getting rid of the alternate shot format. We're playing just best ball. And singles. That's it. That's all we're doing.
Starting point is 00:27:35 We got three days of singles and everyone's playing by God. Yeah. Yeah. And I hate to like just keep harping because they did win. I mean, they won 70. Yeah, we're going to get some love here in a minute. But it's just, it's wild to me that this thing was even close because, and I know the game's not played on paper, but on paper, I mean, this was such a massive mismatch. The fact that it looked like we were going to lose going into Sunday is shocking.
Starting point is 00:27:57 But there are some awesome moments. I mean, the whole day Sunday was phenomenal. I thought one of the coolest things I've seen in the game of golf because I don't know if you'll ever see this. It did remind me of 1999 or Payne Stewart. was one of the most gracious men out there, gave an eight-footer to Colin Montgomery. For Colin to win their singles match because the Ryder Cup was over.
Starting point is 00:28:17 They're in Boston when Colin it took so much abuse the entire week. But Scotty Sheffler playing Nico Echeveria. I mean, this one was over before it started. Scotty's four-up, cruising along. Dude yells right in the middle of Nico's back swing. Scotty was more vocal than anybody about it, said there's no place for that.
Starting point is 00:28:36 Got really upset, was very frustrated by it. get up to the green. Nico has hit his third shot, 30 feet by the hole. He's away, putting for par. Scotty's got 25 feet for birdie. He says,
Starting point is 00:28:47 Nico pick it up. He thought that was the right move. You know, Nico had been interfered with, back on the tee. He's like, I'm not going to win this hole because of Bowie.
Starting point is 00:28:55 You pick it up. If I make this, I can win. But otherwise, but I thought that was so cool that Scotty did that. And you can say, Scott,
Starting point is 00:29:02 he's boring. You can say he's not, I mean, he is not that boring in interviews anymore. He's getting a lot better at these interview things where he's just a total smart ass
Starting point is 00:29:09 I think it's hilarious because I see that side of him off the golf course where he talks a lot of shit. But you can't ever doubt his glass and I thought that was cool because I don't know, can you remember ever see anything like that? No, not like that.
Starting point is 00:29:25 And people will say like, well, he's three up with four to go and like he's going to win the match. I'm like weird, I've seen some weird. You can go back to Medina the last time they had a team event there and there were some matches that looked like they were done
Starting point is 00:29:35 and they weren't. And then he goes and chips in on the next to extend. Shush everyone, which I was like, you're still three down. He just gave you the nicest concession in the history of golf. I get the crowds on your ass, but that was a cool move from Scotty. I think he does it probably regardless, but that was in the middle of like when we had to have it. And it looked like it was done, but there's no guarantees in golf.
Starting point is 00:29:56 Jackson Corrigan was a shining star. Goderup, I think is going to be a monster in this format going forward. Not just in this stuff. Goddorf's just, he's a bad dude, man. He's saying it for moose. He is so freaking good at golf. BMW championship, Trevor, and I were on the range, and he was obviously in contention,
Starting point is 00:30:13 and we're sitting there hitting balls, and I just look at him, go, he's fucking good, dude. Yeah, he's real good. And he's got a move that's not, like, built in a lab. I think that he owns it. He knows what he's, he aims 40 yards left, and you don't know what he's doing over the ball. Is he going to fade it?
Starting point is 00:30:28 He's going to cut it. He can hit the stingers. He hits all the shots. It just took him a little time to get, like, his feet wet. He's the guy, like, owns his golf swing, where he's not going to be out there on a Sunday, like tinkering with his move and stuff, which I think is a huge,
Starting point is 00:30:41 like asset to have because a lot of guys, when it's perfect, it's perfect, when it's not, they can't find it. And he eats more than just grilled chicken and broccoli. Yeah,
Starting point is 00:30:49 and he's just a dude. I like that about it. He's just a dude. I'm going to do it. It was a triple candidate during the celebration. Yeah. I think he had three ultras out there.
Starting point is 00:30:56 I was like, that's Rutgers stand up. That's Jersey Shore. But it was awesome. The team events are great. I'll be honest. I thought it was going to be a blowout at the start.
Starting point is 00:31:05 It wasn't. The internationals, tip your cap dump. Ogilvie. I mean, he's getting rave reviews for him being a captain. A lot of talk about him possibly running it back because it's in Australia. My problem is Adam Scott, kind of a big deal in Australia. Probably on the team, though. But he might be playing still.
Starting point is 00:31:20 Would you expect him to not be on that team right now? He's getting faster off the tee. He might be a playing captain. Yeah. I mean, Tiger was a playing captain down there. I'd throw Jeff right back in there. Yeah, he is just, he's so well-spoken. I think the players respect him so much.
Starting point is 00:31:34 He's, and, I mean, Jeff obviously wants to play the Champions Tour, he turns 50 years old, but like, he's not playing a whole lot right now. He's more involved in his design business. He can give this captaincy thing all he wants. Yeah, I think he, like, he was as expected. I thought going in this, I like, Jeff will do the right things, say the right things, make the right calls, and he did. I'd run it back with him, especially the fact that it's in Australia. At the end of day, like, we won the thing, like, the sky is falling, but like, we should win. And the fact that it was that close, honestly, probably the best thing that could happen for the Presence Cup to have some juice.
Starting point is 00:32:08 I mean, if you would have told me start of the week, hey, dude, with a few matches left on Sunday, this thing's going to be undecided. I'm like, you're out of your mind. There's no way that happens. So probably good for it. Also, good news for the international is like, with Liv and all the stuff that's happening,
Starting point is 00:32:22 like they should get a little help coming here soon, depending on how that all shakes out, but I don't expect any of those guys that would be on their team to stay on live full time going for it. So I think they're going to get some, which is huge for them, just a little more depth. I mean, dude, they got.
Starting point is 00:32:36 As good as Christian is, we just had him on the show. Like, he's fighting for his PJ Tour Cart. Our worst guy, like, barely misses the Tour Championship. And typically, they all make the Tour Championship. You know, like, that's pretty big gap. They need all the talent they can get. And they really need, like, a few young guys. Like a Pot Geeter or that kid from Japan.
Starting point is 00:32:56 Was it Neda, how you say his name? Kada Nakashima. I mean, he hasn't played that well. I might have been wrong about that way. But, like, he could, like, he's supposed to be the next dude up. He is. And you look at the President's Cup and out of our 12 players, 11 of them were the top 20 in the official world golf rankings. You're supposed to win.
Starting point is 00:33:16 The only one that wasn't in the top 20 in the official world golf rankings is a 21-year-old who just finished up fucking college a few months ago. Yeah, it was taking fine. It wasn't even taking finals because he didn't graduate. Like he probably wasn't. It's like, peace out. I'm gone. Yeah, like it's, I mean, the talent level, and we're going to get a dare manner next year. And guess what? They're loaded across the board too. will say this, I'll stand by this till I die.
Starting point is 00:33:38 Flip me the formats in these things. Give me President's Cup format, more points, mix and match on the pairings and the matchups, and then shrink it. And you can still keep the pair. I just love the throwing it out. There's so much more strategy, I think, playing chess than just guessing blindly where are they going to put them.
Starting point is 00:33:55 You saw us make some mistakes. You saw Jeff capitalize on some of those mistakes. That changes it. If you're just guessing, I don't like that as much. And it's great drama. It is. And I think this. reaction from us and a lot of other people in the media world about this not just being a positive
Starting point is 00:34:11 because we won is because of what's been happening at the Ryder Cup. And we know, like, the President's Cup's great. The Ryder Cup's a whole other level. And we just know that if this is how it continues, where we struggle in this format, that is basically just under half the competition, like. Yeah, matters even more. Riter Cup. Yeah, because we had a chance to make it up with some more points in best balls and in the single you know uh yeah we i mean something we got to figure something out but at the end of the day a lot of sack a lot of heart by the u.s team that could easily they tip over a couple of those matches their way and we lose this thing i mean the conversation is like do we just blow up the entire team form like what do we have no clue
Starting point is 00:34:53 where we're doing and we just lost is the biggest favorites in the history of team golf um they found a way to get it done and for people saying they don't care i mean i saw patrick can't be about his animators I've ever seen his life. Scotty Shuffer was freaking out. The Cantley Adam Scott match was all world, all world, by the way. And I think Adam Scott had, like, dominated Cantlay in previous President's Cups.
Starting point is 00:35:14 I think that might have been his first win against him. The 57-footer Cantley made, like, felt like the nail in the coffin. That was, for the whole thing. It was like, oh, it was going the Americans way. But when he made that put, he went nuts. Place went nuts. You could just feel it all across the golf course. But it was fun, man.
Starting point is 00:35:31 it was fun to watch. I'm interested to see what we do going forward to try to figure this thing out in the alternate shot. And the President's Cup as well. I mean, I really do think this thing would be a much better competition if we took a day away and knocked it down to 28 points. I just,
Starting point is 00:35:48 I think they have a better chance that way. I mean, it's 14, one and one now. It's 11 straight. Yeah. And but they, in their defense, like, they've been close. This will show up as 17 to 13. And in six years, we'll be like, look, close doesn't matter.
Starting point is 00:36:00 It doesn't matter. It is not as lopsided as it appears just in the record book. But, yeah, it's shrinking the points is the easiest way to just do it. Always great week. Props to the U.S. They got it done. They did. Congrats to Brant Snetterker on winning in his debut as a captain. I also want to take a special moment here to congratulate two very good friends of mine
Starting point is 00:36:23 who just got announced their finalist for the World Golf Hall of Fame in 2027, that being the great Jim Nance and my girl Doddy Pepper who. DP stand up. She's been a finalist. I believe this is her fourth time. What are we waiting on?
Starting point is 00:36:39 We got 17 LPGA wins, two major championships, six Solheim Cup appearances where she was batting 70% She was a monster. What's she doing next year in September? But put her in the Hall of Fame. Nance,
Starting point is 00:36:54 I know you're going to be in the Hall of Fame. By the way, you deserve it as well. But congrats for them on being finalist for next year's Hall of Fame. class, very well deserved. But damn it, put Doddy Pepper in there. What a, Doddy feel, both of these people, like, what are we waiting to see? What do we wait? You need to see Jim call a few more events before you know if he's really got it.
Starting point is 00:37:14 What's changing from now to like when he gets in? And Doddy's same thing. I'm like, dude, look at that. Like, who, is there like a limited number that get in each year? And that's why like so many good names spill over. Adam Scott's on the list this year already. And like, he's still playing and he has a very interesting Hall of Fame career in terms of one major, one player's awesome, but not like mind-blowing. I do know that Trevor Emelman's a voter
Starting point is 00:37:37 and he put in our group text, he's like, Doddy, you could sway my vote. I can be bought. Yeah, I can be bought. But no, I don't know, man. I just know that if you threw her resume down and said, do you think this person should be in the Hall of Fame, you'd be like, yeah, first ballot. Like,
Starting point is 00:37:53 what are we, what's going on? Nance, he's going in as a contributor. well, he's one of the finalists, along with Butch Harmon also. You need to see Bush give a few more lessons? Yeah, it's like, I don't know exactly how the contributor part works. I don't know how any of it works. But I just know that I work alongside two Hall of Famers and I'd like to see them in. Yeah, there's a bunch of names on there.
Starting point is 00:38:12 It makes me think there's like a limited number of spots or something, but there's a point. I'm like, yeah, like, that makes sense. The fact that Adam Scott was even on it still, I was like, that kind of feels premature. Jim, maybe next time you'll be able to get in, but right now. We need to hear you toss it to commercial just a few more times and do a few more sponsor interviews before we really think you're the guy. By the way, Doni, you're also a great player, great broadcaster. And she's back hitting the rock on Instagram too.
Starting point is 00:38:38 She's got a lot of love. She's got a lot of love on the sling. All right. Well, speaking of compression. Speaking of lean in the fucking shaft. This is my worst nightmare. Hopefully we're out of time or the battery guys in this thing. Talk to me.
Starting point is 00:38:50 Talk to me. What do you want to know? Bounty Club member guest. You and I were both in the field. you're playing with your boy, Jonathan Marseco. Shout out, jam. I had my man Brendan Morrow, who we finally got to film an episode of subpar alongside Mike Commodore, which will be coming to you in the next couple of weeks. But Hugh, Sam, Patrick, everyone at Bounty Club, the entire staff,
Starting point is 00:39:13 we had so much damn fun all week. Too much fun. That's why my voice sounds even worse than normal. I'm exhausted. I slept 12 hours last night. I came on and put the exact 12 piece in. And I woke, I was like, that's 12 hours. That's 10 to 10.
Starting point is 00:39:27 12 pieces. Yeah, I snapped that off, no problem. Could have gone 14. I felt guilty. But it was such an awesome week out there. It was first class the entire way. Two-day member guests, 27 holes Friday, 18 Saturday. We had seven teams go to the shootout, six flight winners, and then a wild card.
Starting point is 00:39:49 And I can't remember who won the first flight. Doesn't matter. I just know that Brendan Morrow and I finished second. They were the best. We lost by two strokes. But on a serious note, congratulations to you and Mariscoe, who advanced.
Starting point is 00:40:00 Also, you did make us some money because you won the shootout. You win the whole thing, so the entire flight gets a little cash. Yeah, how good was, I was supposed to be here some more cheering going on for some of these shots.
Starting point is 00:40:13 The shootout was sick, by the way. And everybody was up there getting smashed a little bit more, but there was some good shots that were hitting that thing. How about after the first whole, part five, plays it. There was like three or four teams getting pops.
Starting point is 00:40:26 I was like, I think we need four to probably avoid a chip off or whatever. Ended up being par, went to a chip off. Guy hit it up there close. Go to the first. I think there's four teams left at that point. They eliminated four. Cut it in half. We go out there like, okay, 170-yard shot, pick who you want to hit it,
Starting point is 00:40:42 and we're adding them up. And if there's ties, we chip it off, okay? Get up there. 170 yards. I hit it to four feet. Was the second closest. one that was like a kick in another one inside 10 feet and then like a 20 footer 20 footer burles in the back little four twos from 170 in a in a member guess i was like dude just i'm gonna hit it
Starting point is 00:41:05 behind the hole right like it's a pin you can get close to but like we ain't making boge paro get us the chip off at worst i'm happy to hit the chip all good four twos that was insane we were up on top of the hill and i was like morrow um there's four teams left if someone in our flight wins we get some cash back. And two of the teams left were both from the first flight because the wild card for low round of the day, Brian and his partner. They played great. And so I was like, we got a 50% chance. And by the way, we got the best two squads. And then I look over the hill and this guy in the six flights making a 20 footer coming down. I was like, what just happened? Going a hundred miles an hour. It would have been 100 yards away because it rolls off on there. And I was like, damn, that's a good
Starting point is 00:41:45 put. And like, I was like, we all made four. I was like, what do we do? Like, we're going to go do it again the other guy has to hit now by the way the other guy in our flight i come to find out played golf at duke just stopped playing professionally like one in europe when the portugal open and all this stuff he was a good play yeah um smashed so yeah smash it out the off the tea little high draws um so we went back and did it but um there was some good golf in that thing uh hell of a fun week nice to get one nice to pick one off play some good golf what a little clipy in the last one you want to talk about that one no i just throw the right hand under it and I just had a shit ton of RPMs.
Starting point is 00:42:20 Yeah, I heard your acceptance speech went really well in front of three people because everyone was so disappointed that they left. Everyone did leave. We left right away. We had to get out of there. I had a great speech lined up. If only there was more things to do in Nashville. Yeah, that's the only issue.
Starting point is 00:42:37 You get a little bored once the golf ends down there. But thank you to the Bounty Club. That was a spectacular, fun event, great group. Hangas a 10, towns of 10. Weather was. well, perfect. Weather was perfect, course was perfect,
Starting point is 00:42:50 and I think the right team won, forever immortalized. Feels good. Yeah, there'll be some NCAA violation and it'll get vacated and I can't wait for next year to be like the first ever,
Starting point is 00:43:01 remember guest. Now we start. It would be awesome. Now we start. I mean, massive TV there on number two and number 11 where the comfort station was
Starting point is 00:43:10 had the football going on. You could get very comfortable. Maybe a little corner and had the presence cup on. I don't know, but there was very comfortable. A lot of stuff going on. It was awesome.
Starting point is 00:43:17 Once again, shout out to the whole crew for having us out there letting us do a podcast up on top of the hill. We will not have a better view of our podcast than we did at Bounty Club. Also, my week started off with some fun over at the Popstroke Invitational, which was an awesome tournament. Who won that? I don't really need to get into that because I might have best enough to the winter. Do you have a little boo-boo mess up the names? No, I knew one of the guy's names. Okay. What did you do with the other one?
Starting point is 00:43:44 Listen, we did kind of. And his partner? And I didn't go, hey, I don't remember your name, but I know y'all won last year, so come on up here again. What was, when there's some cash on the line in that? 25 grand, they split. Damn, that's nice. I haven't been to one of those. Is it fun?
Starting point is 00:43:55 They're cool. This thing, this one is indoor in Nashville. I mean, massive, looks like massive field house and then just this beautiful turf. I saw the videos. This is pretty sweet. Yeah. What's the format in that? It's two-man teams.
Starting point is 00:44:08 Two-man team? Just best ball. Nope. Best ball. And it gets, one best ball. And it gets, wotterterter. There are some. You get Snetiker out there, scout that shit.
Starting point is 00:44:14 See the good putties are. There was guys with yardage books. They had the whole place charted. One guy I actually met back in 2017. They did this thing called the World Series of putting. They built a stadium in Vegas. Circt of Salee people built it. Yeah, I remember that.
Starting point is 00:44:29 This gentleman who was there once again this year came up and said, if you remember me, I met you back at this. He's a professional mini golf player. Sick. But there was guys doing. Dreams do come true. There was guys doing putting drills in between rounds, had the devices out. That's what I would have been.
Starting point is 00:44:44 Shout out to the winners. It was great. I mean, yardage books at pop stroke. I didn't even have one at Q school. I'll figure it out. This is just funny. It's just funny because once again, this stuff's on turf.
Starting point is 00:44:58 There's a guy carrying a towel around to clean his ball. Run turf. God, I love that. But love that. Cady. What do you like here? It was an awesome week. They let me have the mic for some reason.
Starting point is 00:45:09 I chirped a couple of people. I got to chirp Stephen Sweeney, who is a putting coach. to many PGA tour guys out there. And every time I would walk over and see him give his partner a piece of advice about wordhead or whatever, it went so wrong. It was amazing.
Starting point is 00:45:22 I was like, don't worry, dude, I'll get Phil Kenyon to text you. We'll get this thing tightened up. This is the big leagues here. But thanks to Pop Stroke for having me out and everybody, it was awesome. Our man George Burge was there. Duck Hodges was in the house.
Starting point is 00:45:36 God, what a beauty he is. Is Chris Lane over there? Chris Lane was there? See Lane in the house. Still one of the great all-time karaoke performances I've seen in Vegas. He and Golden Tate doing biggie. He brought in a mink full-length,
Starting point is 00:45:49 or I don't know if they had it in Vegas. He's like, you packed that? I mean, it takes up a whole suitcase, full-length white, like fake mink coat, doing, what do you do, juicy or something? That's awesome. Sick, yeah. It was cool, it's a cool event.
Starting point is 00:46:01 We need to go out there. Maybe actually put ourselves. There's not much cash on the line. I think we'll go back to that town. Maybe. Yeah. We'll try it once or twice. I need a little hiatus first, though.
Starting point is 00:46:11 But love to everyone. Congrats to Team USA. team sleighs God Sleeze and jam shout of my boy Jonathan Mariscoe brushing in that last butt
Starting point is 00:46:21 little four footer I was like this needs to go people are ready to leave this has been a long shootout It was better Yeah it was a great we put that thing right in But we would never end an episode Without hearing
Starting point is 00:46:32 from our wonderful fans out there And you know how to get a hold of us 480-269 6166166 Call in leave a voicemail If you want to ask us anything tell us a funny story, whatever it is. Relationships. Still curious.
Starting point is 00:46:47 I want that guy to call back when he said, hey, my girl's trying to call shots. I just started dating her. Call us back and let us know what you ended up doing with that. If you kept her on board or let her go. All right. But producer Mark's back from his six-month vacation. So it's time to get to some of these voicemails.
Starting point is 00:47:01 You still work here? He was in Nashville. By the way, props to PM for having that set up on the roof. Yep. Big boy grilling on the roof. All right, PM. What we got? Before we get to these voicemails, okay,
Starting point is 00:47:12 we would not been able to compete the way we did out at Bounty Club on a Saturday without our upbeat sound. We needed it. We had all the action going on all the football games, but also out there golf. We got to be able to watch the games, hear everything that is going on. And that's why you all out there need to get an upbeat sound. You can get this thing mounts in 30 seconds or less, depending on how quick you are. I'm just putting it on your steering wheel right there. It's got an incredible screen, 8-inch screen, great sound.
Starting point is 00:47:41 You can watch YouTube, sports, music, podcast, maybe one like subpar, whatever you want to do. But it's waterproof, just in case you happen to spill one of your drinks on it. Easy to get around. And right now, if you go to upbeat sound.com, use code subpar 10 for 10% off your entire order. Pick you up one. Once again, upbeatound.com. Well done. Well done.
Starting point is 00:48:05 Good to have that out there. Let me know. It actually propelled us. I was like, I'm losing a lot of money on football. we're going to need to make some birdies. Do you offer to sell it to somebody? I need to do this to cover. All right.
Starting point is 00:48:17 PM, let's get it into these voicemails here this week. All right. The first one comes from one of our female listeners who has an offer for you guys that I'm not sure you can pass up. I'm all ears. Hey, Colt. And Drew, this is Kathy Brennan.
Starting point is 00:48:34 I am up in Detroit. You guys are up here all the time with Stockton and our other tournament and I just wanted to tell you there are women that listen to you. I know you joke brown that there's not any women that listen to you but some of us do, one of us sports girls really enjoy the pod. And so I wanted to drive a couple of invitations to you. First, oh, I know you're an SMU guy. You have ties to Notre Dame. S&U is playing at Notre Dame and I would like to offer you to get to our family box that has been in the family for every game
Starting point is 00:49:11 that Notre Dame's ever played at the stadium. And we'd love to have you. And I'd love to have you also were members at Open House. So we'd love to show you the new clubhouse and all of that. And introduce you to a charity that I'm real involved with
Starting point is 00:49:27 that your friends, Tompichism, and Jeff Ferguson are involved with. So just wanted to, you can use this flip for your saying that yes, there are girls that listen to stuff are and love it. So there you go. Thanks, guys. I have a return proposition for Kathy.
Starting point is 00:49:44 Now, will you marry me? Kathy. So that'll be the greatest guy I ever get out of the show. I got goosebumps right there. That was so amazing. Thank you. We will definitely discuss this because... Dude, that'd be so...
Starting point is 00:49:54 Have you been to a Notre Dame game? I've never been to a game, which I would absolutely love to, especially the fact that my Mustang's going to come up there and probably upset. No, we could have an incredible wager on this. Kathy, that is one of the sweetest things we've ever been... Yes. By far, the sweetest things we've been offered on here. I love that the ladies listen to it.
Starting point is 00:50:14 Got Kathy, got boozy, Susie over in Kansas City. But Kathy, this is unbelievable. Thank you so much. We will be in touch. I promise you that. Notre Dame game at Notre Dame in a box at Oakland Hills. That will be the greatest phone call we will ever get in the history. Kathy, we love you.
Starting point is 00:50:30 We'll find a way to contact you. This could be all world. Dude, do you need this, that's a, and seen it like that, too? I mean, that's a joke. Okay. And so here's the deal. I mean, no one can beat that. or don't even call.
Starting point is 00:50:41 And the show's over. We're never doing a voicemail again because that'll be the greatest one. If anyone owns a private jet, they would like to get it. That's a, we'll entertain that. But Kathy, we love you. Thank you so much for the call. Geez, all world. All right, Mark, what's next?
Starting point is 00:50:57 A college coach that needs some advice for his players. Oh, God. So, boys. My name's Ethan Blair. I'm a head coach at NAA school in Vermont, Nebraska. I got a few questions for you guys. I think you would appreciate it and enjoy answering. So obviously being a college golf coach, you come against a lot of really high-level players.
Starting point is 00:51:14 And, you know, the one thing I have a question for you guys is you both play at a high level at a consistent rate for a lot of high-level golf. So my question for you guys is, what was the one thing you guys did? There are a couple things you did to kind of keep your head on that even level, meaning, you know, playing good golf consistently, not getting too high, not getting too low. You know, I've had on the Coordinary Tour out in Omaha Technical Bank. I've been a local guy there, so I picked some of those guys his brain. but everybody has something different. So my question for you guys is, what are some tips and tricks you guys did
Starting point is 00:51:44 when you were playing well at a high level on a consistent basis? Then my fun question for you guys, what's the craziest shit you see on the golf sports? It could be a public track, country club, on the tour, whatever it may be. Appreciate you guys.
Starting point is 00:51:57 Enjoy the show. Bye-bye. All right, coach. Thank you. That's great. And it is a great question. You know,
Starting point is 00:52:02 one thing I've always done is I feel like every round's broken down into 18 tournaments. And it's just like that whole year on at the time, what's the best way to play this whole once it's over, we're on to the next one. That's the way to stay absolutely even kill out there because as much as we get angry and we all have, there's nothing you can do about that last shot you messed up.
Starting point is 00:52:23 It's how can I, and I think when you look at Scotty Schaeffer, like that's why he's the best in the world. It doesn't matter. If it's Tuesday at Royal Oaks, slap around his boys or Sunday at the Masters, whatever shot he faces, when he's at that shot, it's, okay,
Starting point is 00:52:36 what does this shot require? what do I need to do to hit a proper one and you go back and do it? Yeah, I think that's good about, I think our college golf coach just said, no, no matter what's happening out there, it's never as good as you think it is when it's going good and it's never as bad as you think it is when it's going bad. My thing, I think when I played my best golf, it was also the time where I like didn't. Was it this weekend at the bounty club? When I was shooting 63 this week now, small goals, like essentially kind of what you said.
Starting point is 00:53:00 Just the smallest goals, I think the more you narrow it down to say like, it's like aim small, miss small, that kind of thing. Like, if your mind can start to wonder if I do this, if I can bury that next par five, and then I got this. Like, you get so far ahead of yourself. If you just be like simple as par three, all right, 200 yards, like, let's just hit this green. Let's get the ball. Let's get a birdie look here.
Starting point is 00:53:19 All right. You do pull that off. You go to the next hole. There's just something in the fairway here. Like just small goals, whatever you can do. It break it down. It makes it a lot easier, I think, to not like get ahead of yourself. And then crazy shit I've seen on the course.
Starting point is 00:53:31 Can I just, man, you can use that? I'm going to have to dig deep for that. I want to switch because we did have a couple of. college coach call in. Just one of my favorite college coach stories. The great Henrik Norlander, PGA Tour Player Forever. When Josh Gregory left Augusta State, they asked Henrik because he lived in Augusta, Georgia, to be like the interim coach for a couple of weeks until they found the coach.
Starting point is 00:53:53 He's like, all right, sure. So he's good. And he has to go on to two tournaments with him. And so they come to Royal Oaks in Dallas. And I believe it's Henrik's first tournament as the interim head coach. and he's in the team van with him. And for some reason this tournament, you know,
Starting point is 00:54:09 normally it's five count four. Well, this week it was six. And they said, coach, is it six for five or is one of us playing as an individual? He's like, I don't know.
Starting point is 00:54:19 He's like, well, can you figure it out? And he goes, all I know is I hope it's a fucking scramble from what I saw today. Yeah, it's like,
Starting point is 00:54:27 Coach of the year, Hendrick Norlander right there. You guys are shit. Yeah, you guys are terrible. No care. How many we count? Hopefully zero.
Starting point is 00:54:35 I think one of the kids said, can we go practice afterwards? He's like, why? Like, why do you want to go practice? It's a waste of time. Oh, that's good. That's good. Love you, Henry. Yeah, that's good.
Starting point is 00:54:46 I would just leave it at that one. I got a few weird ones, but that's a good one for a college coach. Use that on your team next time they get in the van and they played like ass. Hopefully it's a fucking scramble. All right. We got any more, Mark? Yeah, we got one here on the broadcast format for the cup matches. Okay.
Starting point is 00:55:06 A couple weeks ago, you were talking about the Walker Cup and how the coverage totally skipped a hole and then jumped ahead to a group that was up by the Green. And I noticed they do that all the time with the President's Cup and the Rider Cup. We were sitting here about an hour into the President's Cup, and they just did it with the first group off on the second hole. There's no way they don't go back and show us the T-shirt.
Starting point is 00:55:36 of the first group when they make it to the second hole. Because we would love to get your perspective, having been on the broadcast side, like in these types of formats, there can only possibly be two players in this scenario, tracking a shot at the same time. And then they don't go back and show the tee shots. I just can't seem to get it, so I would love to get your take. Thanks, fair. Yeah, so I'm not going to bash on any broadcast or anything.
Starting point is 00:56:06 Like that. Golf, you've done one now. I don't know if you've ever been in a production truck. Golf is so difficult to broadcast. There is 100 TVs on the wall. You've got shots going everywhere. You got actual humans picking out which shots to go. People yelling all over the place, where to go.
Starting point is 00:56:25 These team events, it's tough. And the one thing I will say that I've somewhat disagreed within the team events and why they do miss shots. Because I know exactly what you're talking about. Like the first match out, But like, oh, well, the fourth hole is just to have with birdies. They're so big on doing the introduction on the first tee of the players. And I just don't think that part is that important.
Starting point is 00:56:47 I mean, yeah, it shows, you know, it's Scotty Sheffler versus Nico Echavaria. But if I have a guy that's making a 30-footer up ahead to win a hole to move ahead in a match, like I would rather see that than someone's name being announced on the tee. Like, you're always going to go back and show the guys off the first tee. Yeah, I think it's like maybe just for a vibe saying, like to give you the atmosphere that's going on down there on the first T. When you get into singles, then you got 24 balls in the air out there all at the same time.
Starting point is 00:57:15 Like you're going to miss stuff. You just can't. There's not enough TV. They do the split screen. They try to do that. Like I was noticing on the broadcast yesterday. Like, Scotty had closed his match out against Nico. And then like, a handful minutes later, they panned us some match.
Starting point is 00:57:26 And there was the leaderboard in the back. And it was like panning through all the matches and where they stand. And it had Scotty like two up, you know, his like his match was still going on. I'm like, you can tell that's not live now at this point, but like singles is extremely tough. Now alternate shot when it's basically you got, you know, what? You got four matches going on out there. It's basically like singles, you shouldn't be missing much in that. But like when you get to the actual singles on a Sunday, like, dude, it's just impossible to,
Starting point is 00:57:53 you try to find what's the most important what's going on and play that and then pan back, but you're just going to miss stuff in that. And when I played, like I was never concerned with the TV product or anything like that. like I didn't ever bash it or anything like that. I encourage every player because I do think more players are vocal about the broadcast and stuff. I encourage every player and I wish people at home could actually see it to go in the production trailer during a broadcast and just see what goes on.
Starting point is 00:58:23 My mom went into it. They took her into the production trailer this year during the Memorial Tournament. And then she comes up to the Super Tower. She goes, I cannot believe what I just saw down there. Like, that is chaos. And that's what it takes to put a golf broadcast on air. It is by far the hardest sport. I don't even think there's anything close to it.
Starting point is 00:58:42 So definitely not going to bash on it. I get things do get missed. I wish they didn't. But it's humans. Team events especially. That's a tricky one to do. Try as much as he can. But there's only one screen.
Starting point is 00:58:57 And there's a lot going on. Yeah. I mean, football, there's one ball in there. Yeah. At one time. Golf. We've got, we've got eight. teams fields out there.
Starting point is 00:59:05 But any more, Mark? Yeah, one more left for you guys. I think we've addressed this in the past, but not anytime recently. So let's do it again. Hey, guys. This is Cameron from Mississippi. Just a two-part question real quick. One, just curious, where do the nicknames call for you, BG and Drew, please?
Starting point is 00:59:29 Where do those come from? And secondly, do you all have any good hold-in-one stories for you personally? I made my first one last week. And the only witnesses were the three partners I was playing with and the court girl that was sitting on the green who provided fireball shots for us. So the show, see y'all. Good time.
Starting point is 00:59:49 Good timing by her. Yep. Well done. I'll just give you a hole in one quick. I mean, I made one on the PGA tour, and it was at Quail Hollow, what was then the Wells Fargo, now the truest championship.
Starting point is 01:00:00 End up finishing hole in one birdie to make the cut on Friday. but the best part of the story is 17 there at Quill Hollow back then, back in my day, when it was so damn hard, 227 yards, and there was three groups on the tea waiting. I was talking to this guy and his little six-year-old son, and I noticed he had a broken tea in his hand. And he goes, hey, Colt, can I have a full tea? I said, well, only if you'll trade me for that broken one. He goes, well, you can only use it if you hit it close.
Starting point is 01:00:29 I said, deal. And so I took that tea, made the hole in one. And you can see if in the video my caddy John Davenport's time, like picks the kid up. Like it was pretty cool. That's pretty sweet. A whole in one story's, man. I don't have any like crazy ones. I made my first one and I went on a huge dry spell, like 10, 11 years, something like that.
Starting point is 01:00:47 Just made it last fall. But it was with my pops. Oh, yeah. I don't get to play a ton of golf with it. It was with my dad. We saw it go in. It was funny. It's playing with his like, it's like a one-day member guest at his course.
Starting point is 01:00:57 And I hit it. I'm like, oh, that looks good. And they roll it like releases just a little bit. It goes in. I'm like looking around. Because sometimes it looks like it goes in when it goes over a tier and it's not actually in, but I was looking around. And like, nobody was doing shit. And I was like, am I the, am I the only one that saw?
Starting point is 01:01:11 And like, one of the guys in the group was like, I think it went in. And I was just, I started like, you know, like freaking out or celebrating or whatever. And I was like, I'm the only one here doing this. Like, that was, there was like zero celebration on it. It was great. I will tell you this, though, great time to have it. Because you go in, you're going to buy a bunch of drinks, right? hey, I was a guest.
Starting point is 01:01:31 I was like, Pops, tough look for you here, buddy boy. But also it was all inclusive on the entry fees, so no money. It would have been tough for my dad. You didn't make one, but also, you owe a 2000. I'll tell you another quick one because it involves our man, the Lair, Scott Harrington, playing with them Whisper Rock Upper 13th, Driveable Par 4. Yeah. Okay, 300-something yards down the hill.
Starting point is 01:01:53 And, you know, we have four caddy out there. And I'll say his name, Drew, Drew G was out in their following our group. And Scott hits driver, goes for it, going right at it, looks pretty good. We see him give the field goal sign. Touchdown, yeah. Which is what they do if you hit the fairway. Like, field goal, it's good. All of a sudden, we get up to the green.
Starting point is 01:02:11 We're like, where's Laird's ball? He goes, it went in. What? It went in the hole, like, hole in one on part 40. He's like, yeah, I gave it to field goal sign. I'm like, well, that was the most nonchalant, like, because we had no idea. Yeah, yeah. I was like, I thought you might jump up in the air and get a little excited.
Starting point is 01:02:27 There's only been a few on that hole ever on the drivable hole. Like very few. It was hilarious. We got down to the green. Yeah, dude, it's in. It's in. And then go back to the nickname. Mine, B.G.
Starting point is 01:02:39 He's really one of the few that calls me BG. It came from Big Gravy, which Steve Elkington gave me one day on Twitter when a guy was being very rude like a lot of the people out there. And Steve Elkin said, how about you lay off my man Big Gravy? And I'm like, where the hell big gravy come from? He's like, one of my favorite bourbons, one of my favorite guys. and it just stuck from there. There you go.
Starting point is 01:03:00 I'm not shortening it down to BG. Yeah. Yeah. I think I'm the only one that calls you BG, by the way. Slees told this story a few times, but back in the day, comes from a mini tour buddy of mine. The great Derek Tolan, shout out to DT, aka, there's a great nickname for him.
Starting point is 01:03:15 We call him Peak 16. Because he played in the U.S. Open at 16. He was like this World Beater Jr. And he was playing Bethpage with Tiger and shit. And then, you know, obviously never panned out. We call him Peak 16. Shout out to DT, by the way. But we were playing a matchdown here in Arizona,
Starting point is 01:03:32 and I was hitting it terrible, but getting up and down from everywhere, making every put, all this stuff, and he was hitting it down the fairway on the green, and we were, like, halving holes, having holes. And finally, like, blew one into the desert.
Starting point is 01:03:42 It looked like he was going to win on this par five and, like, hit some explosion shot up there to, like, three feet or whatever. And, like, just a complete throwaway line. He's like, these are some of the sleaziest pars I've ever seen in my life. And, like, nothing, not a thought about it. But then, like, for the rest of the round,
Starting point is 01:03:56 whenever I miss the green. Like, let's see what this sleeves bag does here. Like, here comes the sleeves or whatever. I think McCord was in our group with this. And he started calling me sleaze. And like, we got into the, you know, grill afterwards. And it was like, Slees shot 72 here with five greens or whatever it was. And like, I mean, I never would have thought in my life that, like, that day, like,
Starting point is 01:04:13 that's going to be the name that sticks with you for forever. People just started calling it, like, forever after that. And it sounded like a bad name when you introduced. Like, this is my friend's sleaze. Like, when you meet a guy's wife or something for the first time. Yeah. I think it's like some strip club mix-up type deal. You know what I mean?
Starting point is 01:04:30 But it's like, I don't know. It's just stuck like that. So I just live with it at this point. It's just like I don't even think about it anymore. I think Sleaze is the only one who introduces himself to strangers with his nickname, though. I don't introduce myself. They'll get crazy. How you doing it?
Starting point is 01:04:42 I'm Sleeze. I'm like, hey, how you doing? I'm BG. No, but if you're Sleeze, I'll be like, yeah, what up, man? But I'll be like, hey, slees. No. But yeah, that's one. I was like, if you had told me that day, like, so for the rest of your life,
Starting point is 01:04:54 that's what you'll be called. I'm like, you're out of your mind. Drew. It was a nothing. Yeah, sometimes people are like, oh, why did you say? Just sleaze? All right. I love that.
Starting point is 01:05:01 That was fantastic. Kathy. You are. Kathy, I love you. We will be in talks. Don't worry. But seriously, these are awesome. Y'all keep doing this.
Starting point is 01:05:11 480269-6-166. That's it. That's it. Shout out U.S. Found a way. Get it done. I think we solved all the ultimate shot problems. Shouldn't be an issue going into a dare next year.
Starting point is 01:05:21 And I can't wait to play the first ever Bounty Club member guests next year. Good to be champ, but I'm under the microscope now. I'm in a fishbowl. We'll talk to you next week.
