All right, welcome back to Subpar with Colt Nost and Drew Stoltz. My man, Slee's coming off an epic match at the four ball, which we will get to here in just a little bit. I'm worried about you. You look a little tired. Straight off, straight from the link, straight from Desert Mountains, straight down here. I still got sunscreen all over me, sweating, grinding it out.

Work never stops. That's right. That's right. We've got a PGA recap tomorrow morning. We got Aaron Rye to discuss. What a freaking performance, man. 108 PGA championship at Aronemic. You know, you and I were talking all.

week long going in on our serious XM show. And pretty much everybody was saying to it. Even the players, they were just, they were primed to absolutely destroy Aeronic Golf Club. And Mother Nature, in the PGA of America, said, not so fast. They put some dicey pins out there. The wind was way hard, blew way harder than I think anybody thought. And it was out of the north the first two days, so it was cold.

But I've never seen guys struggle on the greens the way they did this past week at Aronimic. And I loved it. Did you love it? do we got a single digit major champion without any rinky dink mickey mouse bullshit i feel like so yes i i did love it i was shocked like when rory said it's a bad setup because no one can separate themselves i was like we got going into sunday we had 22 guys within three shots of the lead in like 40 within four in what world is that bad i mean i'll tell you who it's bad for is our

producer stellar shy at cbs trying to fly around show as many shots live as possible in us trying to cover everything but as far as an entertainment standpoint what more could you ask for I mean, all you want is just so many guys with a chance to take the lead. I mean, at one point, the great Justin Ray, who's my stats guy, texted me, and Justin Thomas made a birdie on Saturday. And he texted me goes, Justin Thomas was the 14th guy to have a share of the lead today. No shit. That was on Saturday. I mean, dude, looking at the leaderboard, like, the first page is like first and then second was tied all the way down.

And you go to the next page is like still tied for second. And then it was like tied for 12th. And there was another 15 guys. Like, that's awesome. And by the way, like, we had superstars up there. I mean, dude, Rom was up there. Ludwig's up there. Rory's up there.

Zander's up there. Like, you had the big name. Scottie was not too far back. Yeah, Scottie wasn't too far. Like, Scotty was well within striking distance. And then you had a smattering of like non-superstars. And it's like, I was like, that to me feels like a great setup. And also, it's okay to not have just like when we were on a radio show,

talking to every player is like there's nothing to stop you from hitting driver here. is just going to be smash it, hit as hard as you can. If you're in the rough, it's fine. You're coming in like, it's not crazy rough. You can still hit good shots. Then the wind comes up. Then it gets cold. Then the PJ of America, obviously, or apparently, heard what people were saying.

Tuck some pins in some crazy spots. All of a sudden, you had to play for the fairway. And for the first time in ages, I mean, you and I have harped on this, we get callers calling in. Every fan, I thought, like, it's fun to see a golf tournament that's decided not by just, like, who can hit it the hardest. but it's like playing from the fairway matters that's the only chance you have to get close

and Aaron Rye did all the things you need to do extremely well and like is it the sexiest winner? No. Is it the biggest name? No. That's the best golf for in the world last week And it was I thought it was awesome. He played phenomenal and just going back to the fairway I mean I've always been taught like Fairway was a good thing. You're supposed to try and hit those and everybody said

you know the rough wasn't going to stop these guys that changed rather quickly. I had a little bit of rain on Wednesday night and into Thursday morning. I don't know if it just made it a little thicker, made a little juicier, but guys were really struggling. And there was occasionally you'd get a lie

and guys were able to advance it. But for the most part, especially like the 10th hole where the fairway sloped so hard right to the left. We saw so many guys just trickling into that rough and they were forced to lay up with the pond in front. Yeah, which is awesome. Like also there's no trees.

Like there are so many trees out there. If you did miss the fairway, the rough mattered. But I liked it, too. Like, you could normally advance, like, it was hard to hit greens because those greens are one of one. I mean, they're crazy complexes. But you could miss a fairway, hack it down somewhere near the green. And then you had a chance to, like, scramble and still say, I wasn't like hack it sideways,

like some U.S. Opens we've seen. It's like, you still had a chance. So if you wanted to play it like, hey, I'm not going to put value on the fairway as much. I'm going to try to hit it, of course. But if I miss it, it's fine. And I'll try to get up and down. But, like, Aaron Rye was great around the greens. It was great on the greens.

his stroke screen's approach was awesome. Like he just, he played golf like, you know. You're supposed to play. Yeah, the way we ask for a lot of major championships to play. Like, can it not just be hit it as hard as you can and then go figure it out? And like, because then you're just eliminating a ton of guys. And you saw like the variety of players on that first page of the leaderboard. It was like, there's a really long guy.

There's a really straight guy. There's a really like, you know, guy does every. Like it was a whole combination of players that did different things well, which I think is the attestment to a great setup. It's not just one style of player that can play well. I'll say there was definitely a few questionable ones, especially with how much the wind was blowing. Like one of my holes was the part 314th,

and on Friday, it just drove the guys nuts. And I went out there and looked at it Saturday before we went on air to see where it was the day before. And I'm telling you, Sleason, I mean, they're hitting four iron. And this, it looks like it's sitting on top of the self-suck jar. I mean, that's where the whole location was. I was like, you land it, and you have, about the size of this table area to land it in with a four iron,

and then you just hoped it didn't go over the back of the green like so many guys did. That was a little questionable. There was a few of them throughout the week. But hey, that's what you got to do. On a golf course where everyone says, we're going to destroy it. You got to do something to protect it. And damn, I mean, I think, I don't know if there was one person. It sounded like John Rom in his press conference.

They told him everybody thought the players were going to torch. He's like, who are they? He goes, did they play? because they didn't see this golf course. And obviously during the practice rounds, the pins are probably just in nice little flat spots. But man, those greens are wicked.

They're extremely fast. Then you put 20, 25 mile an hour wind. I told sellers our producer, because, you know, they always do like eight feet is 50-50, right? And they always put the percentage. They'll be like 25 feet.

You know, he's got 12% chance or whatever from here. I said, you got to take that away. I go, because it's just based off the length of putt. And these guys are having four foot or four-foots that are breaking six inches.

There's more short misses. Yeah. Inside six. call it six feet than I've ever seen, but 12 feet at Aeronomac is not 12 feet at stadium course at PJ West. You know what I mean? Like those stats are, yeah, like they were crazy different. But that's so fun. That's all you get on those old school courses, which typically don't have the length like hold up to modern day stuff. But when you add 20 mile an hour wins and also not just that, they were firm. So when you did it from

even if you had a good enough lie to like, dude, I can throw this nine iron, whatever it is on the green. Like you can't hold it. You can't stop it. Or you can't, you sure as hell couldn't get it close to those pin locations. And I thought that was cool. It kind of gave you options. Like, do you want to smash it and have a shorter club in? If you miss the fairway, probably can't get it closer. Do you want to lay it back and play from the fairway and have a chance to have some spin

and get close to them? Personally, like, I heard a lot of people being like, oh, this leader board. Aaron Rhyr and is running away with this thing. I was like, what do you want? You just want Rory and Scotty to win every major? Like, there's so many good golfers. And if you make different aspects of the game matter more and weight those more, which this week accuracy actually does.

did matter, which is super rare in golf. Like, you might see some different guys become superstars and win big tournaments, and that's exactly what you got this week. I just don't understand how you can complain when you have Rom, Rory, Justin Thomas, Xander, Scotty. I was like, we could have an all-time. We could have six-man playoff here at the PGA. I really was hoping for that a lot.

I mean, granted, we finished our stroke play around. I watched, I walked in the clubhouse. We were falling around our phones, but Aaron Ryan was hoisting the Wanamaker. So I didn't ever get to like hope for hopefully a six-way player or something. But when I went home and watched it on tape, obviously, I was like, God, there was a time where I was like, dude, this could have been one of the all-world playoffs with like six guys going into that thing, which would have been awesome. But, I mean, all these guys, all these superstars that are like, oh, it sucks. You know, Aaron Rye won. He's not one of those name brands.

He's only got one top 20, I think, on the year. And that was the opposite field event at Myrtle. I was like, well, they all had chances on the back nine to go do what Aaron Rye did. and they didn't do it. I thought it was cool that Rory and Zander as well both basically said, like, you will not find one guy in this field that's not happy for Aaron Wright because he's that good a dude. And I got to say, he was zoned in on the back nine.

Our friends at Zone nicotine, special shout out to y'all. But he, this man, that's going to go down, in my opinion. He shot 31 on the back nine. It's going to go down as one of the greatest back nine Sundays at a major championship ever. It was that good on an extremely difficult golf course When like we just said there was a chance to be this massive playoff He just slowly started picking it apart And he hit every single shot that was required

The bunker shot on 13 That was little Jimmy Andrew Cadillian. That was so nasty I told him from the start because our first person we saw go through there Was Jordan Speath and he laid up just in front of that bunker And I said I wouldn't be surprised to see a lot of people do that Just because if you hit in that bunker which is where it's most likely going to end up It's a 40-yard bunker shot up onto a shelf

Worst shot in golf. We saw every single player hit it in that bunker, chunk it, come up short, have the 25, 30 feet par, get out. He flew it up top, put a little juice on it. It was special. And from that moment on, it was basically over. Yeah, and I'll tell you another thing that's cool not to get like sentimental on this, but like in a day and ageing golf where it's like you got live, you got PJ tour.

It's a race to like who can pay the most money. That's where you're going to get the players and everything's always about money. You know, like, oh, this is a $20 million dollar person. We're playing for $30 over here. Look at the career money. This guy made. $50 million last year. It's nice to see a dude that's like not into that.

Like that's not his thing. He won and he's like, I think I'll go to Chipotle. If it's still open, I was like, fuck yeah. Love this dude. Like he's, he, I think he's like one of the guys that don't take all this stuff for granted because these golfers have played for so much money and they, you know, they skip events. And then they go another one, play one because they give him a huge bag to go play. It's like this guy just plays it.

And he played an unbelievable round of golf. And he just didn't try to do any shit that he can't do. He didn't go try to hit it. I didn't go try to do it. I'm going to hit it down the fairway like I always do. He hit great iron shots and he pulled a ton of puts. Like it was just like there's nothing negative. I don't think you can say about it.

By the way, I mean, he shot 31, but he eagled number nine. So I mean, he's six under his last 10 on Sunday at a major championship. And it was so tight there coming down the stretch. And then like I said, he made the awesome birdie on 13, took care of 14. He had a great shot in a 15 with from like 2.30 made par there. Bertie 16. Yeah, after laying it back. Yeah, and then the put on 17.

I mean, my goodness, gracious. I thought, you know, I don't like to give him much love. Frank Nabilow had a fantastic call there. I mean, he screamed, yes. But then he said in the hometown of Joe Frazier, Aaron Rye just delivered a knockout punch. I was like, oh, that's pretty good. Yeah, it had that one's tough.

I already knew it out. I'd seen the highlight reel and all this stuff. But that put on 17, I was like, tell me in the back of your mind as a guy, Aaron Rott, trying to win far and away the biggest event you've ever won, maybe that you'll ever win in your life, that you're not thinking of, like, if it's a little long, this could go in the water.

Like, you could put that ball in the water. I don't know. I was like, I was shocked that that ball got to the hole. I would have bet a million dollars in live time. If I was there, but I bet you this doesn't get to the hole. I don't know how much of it you actually watched because you said you were playing. But like, Justin Thomas was similar. He left it about eight feet short.

Of course. Made it. Several guys. Maddie Schmidt left it short. Alex Smalley left it short. Like everyone was coming up short there. You goose it a little. That's in the soup.

That goes in the water. You put in the water. I'm drawing a black. on who came up short and missed it and it basically just ended their chances right there. But everyone was coming up short and he hit it with perfect speed and it went right in the middle. I would have, from 68 feet. Two shot league makes it three going and it's over at that point once that goes. I was like three putt here, which is very reasonable to expect at that point when you can't fill your hands.

I was like one shot league going 18 is a different animal. Oh, yeah. But I could not believe that ball got to a little much less win in the hole. That's one. I mean, that's just when you know it's your week. but I mean, yeah, we look at it at the leaderboard at the end. It's like, oh, runaway. But sitting there on 17 green, I was like, this could be one, you know,

he could have had a one-shot lead going 18 easily. I think it might have been wrong that actually repudded. But ended up finishing tied for second. He ended up incredible. Yeah, good to see him up in the mix. Alex Smalley, another awesome fight back there on Sunday on the back nine, end up tying for second. Him and Maddie Schmidt both made very big pups on the last

to book themselves to the Masters next year. Yeah, huge. Shout out Pooge. Dave Pooge. I believe top 20, which gets him in U.S. Open, if I'm not mistaken. And we predicted that with Kouchy. We got that one. That was nice.

JJ Spawn. Slight miss on that one. But there was some cool, like, live from just destroys ROM every single major championship. I don't agree with a lot, 90% of the things they say in there, but like they go to his major record, all this sort of stuff. They just drag him, drag him, drag him, drag him. Great to see him in the mix, which, by the way,

was, like, leading the PGA a year ago. go on the back nine or tied for it or something like that. So he's been in the mix before. But to see him play well. And then Cam Smith, how about that with a little resurgence? Just got a new teacher and it didn't take long for that to start working either. That was nice because he's been getting just dumped on for, you know. His record's been horrible.

But the narrative is kind of like, he goes to live and he stinks. It's kind of like you talk to him or you hear him talk. He's like, I'm working my ass off. It's just not turning out right. And he got a new set of eyes and all of a sudden it looked pretty good. I honestly thought he was going to win. I really did. Coming down, I think on 11, 12, he was right there tied for the lead,

made some birdies very early in the round. I was like, he might get it done. But then the bugaboo for him, the last pretty much his whole career when he does play, but he drives it so bad. I mean, it's it all over. Always lies, really. Yeah. And I mean, they're just eventually caught up to him.

But yeah, good to see him. He had missed six straight cuts in majors coming into the PGA. But, um, Rahm, great week from him. Pooge, I was so pumped for him, man. And just going into. Saturday playing with Scotty Sheffler world number one I was so excited for the world to get to see some of pooch and he got off to kind of a slow start made an eagle late but he's playing with him again on Sunday and uh didn't have his best stuff but he hung in there the US Open was on his mind

I was talking to him on the range Sunday and I was like are you going back tonight or tomorrow to Phoenix because he told me he's going to be home he's like now I'm actually going to Dallas he's got US Open qualifier tomorrow I need to play good today when I was like oh dear god I didn't scratch that off the list he was 62nd in the world I think he moved to 57th or 8th, which one of the cutoffs was after the PGA championship. So, yeah, he is in Shinnecock now. So he is back home here in Scottsdale. But it was cool for the world to get to see him a little bit.

I asked Scotty about him. He's like, dude, he smashes it. He goes, boy, he can hit it a little crook. Even I talked to when we were on the range on Sunday. I was like, how was it yesterday? He goes, if we were playing Whisper Rock, I would have shot 87. I swear. Every time I've never seen, I've never seen him hit him in the day.

desert one time. I'm like, dude, he drives it 340 and straight and he hits it to the moon and he has these little cuts and his hands up, like everything he's got. Somebody put on Twitter like, this is the first time I've ever heard about David Pooge. Like, why doesn't the mainstream golf media talk about more? I was like, well, if you listen to us, dude, we've been, like, we get accused of like, you know, like slurping him too much because like we've seen it and we know. And it's the more and more reps he gets in major championship, I think his game is even like more tailored to a major championship than it would be just regular, if you want to call it, tour events or whatever because he can do the weird things that only a select handful can do.

The more and more of these starts, he gets more and more opportunities he gets, are you going to continue? Like, I know it's top 20. It's a good finish. It's not the world's best finish, but just keep lining him up for him. Keep line him up, watch him. Hopefully he can play his way at top 50. Then we get some master starts and things like that because he doesn't take a backseat

to very many people in terms of talent. He said it and Scotty said it. Maybe the worst drive they've ever seen a professional hit. it the 10th hole, he had it left of the water. If you saw Nick Taylor snap hook it off 10, he still had about 10 more yards to get to the water, and he was left of it. I don't even know that there was a left of the water.

Yeah, there was. Okay. He does aim left and hit the little fate, so he double crosses it, and he hits it hard. It can probably go left, but I never see him. You know what's wild about him is,

I talked to Coach Thurman over at Arizona State. When he showed up in Scottsdale, he was a short, accurate driver of the golf ball. And now he's, long and normally pretty accurate, but he's not extremely long. Like we're talking 192 ball speed, but now I'm pumped for him. A lot of guys had some big weeks, but no one better than Aaron Rye who deserved that. He went out there and got it.

Nobody lost this thing. Aaron Rye went out and won it. I thought going into the day, $600 would be a playoff, $700, $700, win it out right? Turns out you had to get to nine because Aaron Rye was in the zone on the back nine. No question. There were some good scores out there Sunday early. I mean, Kidiyama went out there, what, 63, JT went out there,

leader in the clubhouse. shot a good round, but to do it, for a guy that hasn't even been close to that position in a major championship ever, to go out and look at the leaderboard, like, all right, there's 17 guys within three shots or whatever it was at the time, and to go out and just put a 31 on the board, dude,

I mean, that's real life. And another Euro winning, dude, the Euro, it's good news, the Ryder Cup ain't this year. Well, Americans had won 10 straight PGAs. True, and now they're winning all the stuff and they're playing better at regular events and stuff as well. And they got like Pooge and some of these guys just tucked.

Yeah. And also, shocker, this is the first time since the Masters started in 1934 that Europeans have won the first two majors, which is shocking. And I got that from Justin Ray. I got shit on all over social media claiming I stole this stat from him. Little do they know that Justin Ray is actually my stats guy and works with me at CBS. And he sends me all the info as he's also tweeting it out there.

people are just abused me. Call me a douchebag for stealing his stat, not giving him credit. I said, if I gave him credit for every stat, I said I would say his name more than I would say Trevor's on the freaking broadcast. I mean,

the game of golf would, we wouldn't have anything to talk about. Every time they show Patrick Mahomes passing stats, you have to say who came up with them. Yeah, that's fair. I mean, that would sound good. You got to get off to Twitter. You got to something.

I mean, it's just, though there's some good things that come from it, which I'm about to get to. Because we're in Philadelphia. And shout out to my guy. You know who you are. I'm not going to throw your name out there. But we had an awesome week.

A couple phenomenal dinners. One of my favorite places I've ever been to called Saloon there in downtown Philadelphia. A man, two years in a row. Never met him in person. Social media, DMs, takes care of our check every single time. And he is shout out, you're the man. But a couple places. If you're up in Philadelphia, which, you know, four ball,

winner the four ball gets into the U.S. Amateur, which is in Marion. That's right. So go ahead and jot these down, Saloon, as I said. and a place called Double Not, both in downtown, both glorious. You will love them. We had an awesome week up there. It was nice being in the booth, not having to hear Go Birds, non-freakin stop. Scotty took the brunt of that throughout the week.

There was a few aggressive Dak Prescott comments towards Scotty, which I'm not going to say on here. As you would expect. Yeah, but it was awesome. I actually got to play a couple rounds of golf. We did play Marion. Scouting it out for you. Oh, yeah, you played Trout and Marion. How to go?

How's Trout. So Trout is so cool, man. A lot of really cool holes on it. They did a phenomenal job with it. And for like what golf is in the modern day now, as far as like amenities, just a good time. Yeah. It's pretty hard to beat. Yeah.

They're in the process of building their clubhouse right now, 75,000 square feet. Cozy. Tidy. Obviously, state of art gym that Trout's going to design. Bowling alley, like a barber shop. I mean, there's four cottages, lighted par three course. Yeah, just Disneyland for dudes. It's literally his playground.

Yeah. It is awesome. And it's super fun to play. Like it doesn't kick the shit out of you. The back T's are like 6,900. The Tiger T's are like 7,500. We didn't go back there. Myself, Wagoo, and little Jimmy Andrew Catalan played at Trout.

But one of the cool things, obviously they have these, they have several comfort stations. Beautiful one behind the eighth green. But then you go over to the 14th T and they got the dugout. It's obviously this wide comfort station. You go down four steps and walk in, just like a dugout. They got some little bench seats there. It's a cool place. When the clubhouse gets finished.

And the practice facility is out of this world. Like the clubhouse right now is the learning center, and the learning center might be as nice as you've ever seen. But it's cool. Love there. And then obviously, I mean, Marion's one of the best in the world. We had an awesome time around there. It's so freaking hard, dude.

It was blown like, we played on Thursday when it was blown like 25. Good one test. Not the matches go. You want to get, I don't know. I'm asking genuinely right now. It feels not. The standings is now six to one. Oh, I thought it was going the other way with that.

No, no. Damn. I got him. Wagoo, we got to tighten up a little bit. He made a little run at Marion. I won the first three holes with par at Marion. Ended up winning three and one. At Trout, I was a seven up with seven to play.

Damn. And then he went to the drawing board. And then he went to Eagle, Birdie Eagle, obviously went a few and ended up beating him four and three. But it's not good right now. He's actually, I've informed me. We are running out of weeks. We're heading to Dallas, too, to Rolloaks Country Club on Friday.

Yeah. He is getting a lesson this week. before he flies to Dallas. Okay, good. He's back. That's all it takes, going one and six. You know what? I'll start working again.

We had a blast. That was my first time playing with Catalan, too. That was his game. He shot... Long off the T. He's a 17 handicap, and I think he shot like 90.

So he played a flight, but right on schedule. But he loves playing. We had a blast. It was a cool place. Thanks to Trout and GM out there, Dave for a loudness coming out. And obviously, our hosts over at Marion

were phenomenal. We had a great day. That's a hell of a good run. Good run and a hell of a good week out there. All right. Well, let's get to it because I mentioned you're still sweating coming off the 18th hole because your match today, you and the cat, Drew Kittleson. Yeah.

First round of match play at the four ball went all the way to 18. Course. Of course, dude. It's the longest round. Five hours and 40 minutes or something like that. Before we get to the positives, okay. I got to talk to you about this pace of play because... Tell me about it.

We planned on meeting here at 530 tonight. You teed off. at noon. I thought that would be plenty of time, by the way, too. So I'm checking in, you know, falling along throughout the day as I'm having a little rest day. And I was like, they still got like five holes left. And it's, it's 4.30.

Didn't they tee off at noon? Oh, yeah. I was doing the math. Oh, you were right. So I believe. We went off on time. I believe the total was like five hours and 36 minutes. That's, yeah, I was like, when we got down, I was like, was that 545?

Were y'all playing erronek? I mean, what the hell was going on out there? We got out there at noon where the second to last group, we got up there, first hole, goes fine, running to a par three, wait a little bit, but then you get like, they changed some T's around. You get a drivable part four. Right before that, you get a reachable part five downwind. Everybody's waiting.

And then you got people that blow it in the desert. So they're looking and then hacking out and taking all this stuff. I mean, yeah, we were waiting. We were waiting 10 minutes. You know, we were walking to the T up to the T as they were like walking off a bunch of times. And then you get down to the like last hand. Feels like every match went deep today too or like most of them. and you get to the last like four holes

and they're like probably the toughest holes like 17's a 230 yard par 3 that plays straight into the wind is playing 250 18's a converted part 5.5 that's 520 is a par 4 like they're long with desert you know like there's the closing stretch and then everyone's

trying to grind out a win you know it was not fast and you all went with par we got 36 yeah so converted part 5 the last well I think it's 515 um I had six iron. I had not a great drive straight, but I didn't clip it that well. I had a six iron

and it plays a little bit downwind, but the green is like concrete. It's super hard to hold. I had on the front edge, the other three, one of the, one of the guys on their team hit it in the desert short, kitty hit it in the desert short. The other one hit it just in the grass by the bunker. Both the desert balls went, knifed it over. There's no, like, it's, it's tight desert. It's not like explosion type stuff. And then the chip from the bunker was going like mock five but it clipped part of the hole on like the bounce and like shot sideways damn near like could have clanked the pin it was going off the back of the green and and gone in the hole which they hooped one from 30 yards like a couple holes earlier too and then the guy from

the back green chipping for par no way to stop it zero percent chance the only way to stop is smashing the pin smashes it into the pin oh good god here when i was like this is like target so where'd you at your six out of these guys i had a six i don't know like the front probably the front part of the green pins on the left side. I had 28 feet like up the hill. Hit it up there like this. They conceded. The guy that hit the lip on the chip had,

they've rolled to like 15 feet. And they'd been doing some good stuff coming down the stretch. And I was like, we'll get ready to do. We're going to one. It's going to go in. And he left it a little bit low. And we got out there with a one-up win.

Are we saying this is scripted? I don't know. is that this was, she was on the take and she's like, hey, hit me with this and then I got it. I don't know. It was just really weird how this video emerges from her locker and warming up, and it was 17 seconds and literally same amount of things, gets on top of her, grabs her arm, rolls over, boom, boom, quick tap.
