Starting point is 00:00:09 All right, here we go. Welcome back to Golf Subpar with Colt Nost and Drew Stolz. And Slias, if you're watching on YouTube, you can obviously tell we're in slightly different places. It's currently 8 a.m. on Tuesday over here in beautiful Japan. I'm sitting at the base of Mount Jeff Fujimoto currently as we speak. The world famous where he was named ever. He was born at the base of that mountain. And Kunichuad, good day to you, my man. How is the treat me over there thus far?
Starting point is 00:00:37 Well, got here yesterday. it around 2 p.m. on Monday. Had some, had an incredible dinner, which I'll get into later. But we made it up until about 8 p.m. woke up at 3.30 wide awake. I've been up ever since.
Starting point is 00:00:51 It's not great right now. Gone on a walk. Had some breakfast. Yeah. A little, a little tired, but you know what? We're going to adjust.
Starting point is 00:00:58 Yep. Just got to heavily medicate. That's the way to get through a lot of problems. You know what I mean? Well, I meant, I talked about beautiful Mount Fuji, but let me tell you about something else, beautiful sleaze.

Starting point is 00:02:09 and select Ralph Lauren stores, exclusive private clubs and resorts, and online at Ralph Lauren.com. All right. Japan. Site of the Asia Pacific Amateur this week's leaves. This is my fourth time covering it. Winter gets into the Masters and the U.S. Open. Going to be a lot of fun over here this week. But the 16-hour time change is not ideal.
Starting point is 00:02:28 And also word on the street, your Wi-Fi did not work on the flight over. On a Sunday, nonetheless, makes things difficult to stay up in the world of sports. The Cowboys didn't lose. I don't know if you heard that. They did not lose. It's a non-lost week. They took care of producer marks, soft-ass, New York Giants. Both teams suck.
Starting point is 00:02:48 What about all that was? That was a good game. It was fun game. But yeah, for some reason, the airline I chose to fly over, which I'm not going to hate on them. Their Wi-Fi only covers certain parts. Never understood that. The last couple of times I've made the trip from the United States to the other side of the world. It's worked the entire way.
Starting point is 00:03:05 But I've been able to watch football, golf, whatever it is. This time, I only got to watch it for a few hours. Watched some Red Zone. Watched a little bit of the President's Cup where USA absolutely dominated 18 and a half, 11 and a half. But yeah, that kind of sucked. But luckily, I was able to sleep a little bit. But I'm really sad. I missed it because President's Cup, it was exciting there for a little bit.
Starting point is 00:03:24 Yeah, you know, we've been breaking it down since it happened. And I'm kind of conflicted. On the one hand, I'm like, at times this thing felt like there was an actual chance. After the 5-0 blitz, the second, or the first day by the Americans, then they come back and do it. I would have never bet on that happening. They could have easily kind of laid down and faded. Then it stays close through the next session.
Starting point is 00:03:43 I look back on like Saturday afternoon where things really swung where they had a chance to put some points on the board, keep it really close going into singles. They didn't. We did things that we typically see the Europeans doing when we play them in the Ryder Cup. We just found ways to win matches at the end. And then a four point deficit going into singles code, I was like, dude, I mean, this is, it's over.
Starting point is 00:04:03 And it could get super ugly. And credit to them, they battled, they fought, those early matches, they kind of, flipped a few and got halves and got points in matches that I didn't think they would. But at the end of the day, it's like, it's another, it's another pounding. And it's 10 in a row. And really only a few of those have been competitive to the end. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:04:22 You mentioned Friday, when the internationals went 5 at 0, which was unbelievable because you and I were texting on Thursday, like, this thing sucks. It's over. They're running away with it. Then they did make it a little close. Yeah. But on Saturday, it even on, mostly on. Saturday. Patrick Cantley. Just
Starting point is 00:04:40 some of the puts he made in the morning and then they're in the dark at the end. I mean, from 20 feet, the guy is just so dangerous. Look like the Patrick Cantley of old. I mean, the reason they call him Patty Ice just made so many big putts where it looked like the international team was going to be able to get back in there, possibly flip that match, and then we could possibly have
Starting point is 00:04:56 a tie ball game or maybe a one point differential going into Sunday, but he said not so fast. Yeah, four and one for him, four and one for Xander, four and one for Marikawa. Those are the top point getters on that deal. And, you know, You and I, yeah, after the 5-0 blitz, first day, I was like, well, this is dirt and up, and this thing done, see the next time.
Starting point is 00:05:13 Then it got close, and it was cool. And then you and I were texting, it was Saturday or Sunday. And I was like, it's, it's honestly strange watching the U.S. play in the President's Cup because I feel like everything they struggled to do in the Ryder Cup at times, take like whistling straights out. That was played pretty nice out there. But we hold out more, like we hole every big putt that seems to matter that could change the momentum.
Starting point is 00:05:35 We make more long putts from nowhere that you're not expecting to make. make. We find ways at the end to win matches, things that I feel like we struggle. I mean, go back to Rome, Colt, like there was a bunch of chances where the U.S. was like, hey, if we make this play, if we could steal this half point, if we could steal this full point, like this is a different ballgame. And it feels like it always goes the Europeans way, especially on, you know, when we're playing over there. And that's the way I kind of feel about this thing. It's just like, for whatever reason, I don't know how you explain it. We just seem to play more like ourselves and, you know, we put better and we hole out and we do the things you need to do to win this thing.
Starting point is 00:06:11 Yeah, I mean, Scotty Sheffler comes out Sunday, first hole, pulls up and left bunker, slam dunk. Flies it in. I mean, just right out of the, right out of the gates. It's like, what can this guy do wrong? Nothing. Good news was Max Homa, hold a shot. So we got to see Kevin Kisner with a shirt off, even though it was after the competition, which I felt like, you know, he was trying to duck that one a little bit.
Starting point is 00:06:30 But there was some drama. Tom Kim wasn't really happy with everything. people weren't happy. Tom Kim was getting all excited. Siwu Kim, my guy, was all over the place running around. Didn't really understand the put you to sleep. Steph Curry move when the match wasn't over yet. But either way, Siwu can do no wrong in my eyes. I still loved it.
Starting point is 00:06:48 And I love the energy those guys bring. Yeah, if you're going to put somebody to bed, don't go and lose the next hole to lose the match. I don't know that he fully understands the celebration all the way, but they were going nuts. And Tom Kim, I feel like, you know, like he was at Kuel Hollow Colt. He's the emotional spark plug of that team. And I feel like Thursday especially, it was kind of dead out there.
Starting point is 00:07:07 He's doing everything. He can't, I mean, quite frankly, I feel like he called out the crowd. He's like, man, you're trying to manufacture energy. Yeah, it calls out the crowd. We need you louder. He's yelling. And he's yelling directly at Scotty Schephler. Don't know that that's a great idea.
Starting point is 00:07:19 They leave the green and go to the next tee. I don't think that's the biggest deal in the world. But it was like he was trying to manufacture something the entire time. The only issue that I have with him, I was like, you could point to a number of things that he did that the U.S. could be like, yeah, I take issue with that. But then as soon as it was, the shoe was on the other foot. but he's like, I don't like what's going on in the sportsmanship and the things like that. I'm like, it's okay to be the guy, to be the villain and to, you know, do all the antics,
Starting point is 00:07:43 but don't, don't be upset. Don't complain when the shoe's on the other foot. And the other last little piece of drama, I see you're giving, Wyndham Clark went to your PR class again. Had a little interesting comment there. It's been on. A couple comments. And then Windham just all of a sudden had to go chime in for some. reason. Not the best look, in my opinion, for your son there. Yeah, he's like,
Starting point is 00:08:08 his name was the one that was brought up. You know, there was people saying there was players, players, multiple cursing. I heard the U.S. side being like, if that happened, I never saw it. There's, by the way, thousands of phone cameras out there. I got to think if something weird was going on somebody. It's hard to do anything this day and age without people kept catching on camera. But yeah, he, uh, he went hard with the nighty night stuff. He's getting dragged pretty appropriately for it. Yeah. I think the comment. And it was actually on our golf.com social media page where they showed Wyndham doing the sleepy
Starting point is 00:08:39 thing and Benon had some interesting comments about the one guy who doesn't do anything but talk shit the whole day. And then Wyndham Clark came in and said, and then there's the guy that doesn't even have a tea time. I'm like, oh, boy. I think in that situation it's best to just put it to be. Don't even respond to anything. But at the same time, I'll say this. Like, Ben on, if you're going to be like, oh, you're the guy that hasn't done anything.
Starting point is 00:09:01 You should probably have more points than the guy you're talking shit to. You know what I mean? If you've done the same amount, if you contributed the same amount of points, it's hard to be like, you don't do anything, you know? But at the end of the day, it's just part of it's good, Cole. I mean, but I feel like so much of this is like manufactured. And the Ryder Cup, I feel like the reactions, the things, like they're authentic because it means so much.
Starting point is 00:09:20 And this thing, I feel like they try to replicate that. But they just don't have it because, quite frankly, the competition, like, it's hard to say something to a rivalry when it's 10 straight. Look, even in Rome. I know Patrick Cantley had the incredible finish on Saturday, but they were still getting killed going into Sunday. And the fact that everything happened on the 18th Green and the fact that Roy McElroy was wanting to go at Joe La Cofa in the parking lot and everything,
Starting point is 00:09:45 that made it more interesting. Like, you need a rivalry in these team things. You need these guys to not like each other for a few days. Otherwise, especially in the President's Cup when it's an ass-whippin every year, I mean, no one's going to watch if there's no drama at all. And I feel like they know that. And so they go out of their way to kind of try to, like I said, Tom Kim was like kind of trying to instigate, trying to create that drama, that buzz, anything.
Starting point is 00:10:07 Because they know, I mean, with as many points as they play for in the President's Cup, it's more than the Ryder Cup. And with the talent gap that's there and them not having the guys from Live, that would be a huge help to their team, like, unless something weird happens, unless they can create some sort of manufacture something out there, you just play it out, you're going to lose to the U.S. So they have to try to do something. And, yeah, I think the thing it's lacking right now that the Ryder Cup has is it doesn't feel like a rivalry.
Starting point is 00:10:32 And it's hard to hate somebody or have, like, disdain for somebody when they never beat you. You know? It's like, who cares? We don't care. They're fun. We have a good time. And then we go and we actually get ready for the Ryder Cup, which would beg this question, I would ask you. All right, whether it's close, not close, whatever.
Starting point is 00:10:49 It's 10 straight. We've won virtually every President's Cup there's been. Is it time to, is it still there? Is it still have juice? Do we need to change it? Because right now it just feels like a watered down version of the Ryder Cup, but not as good version. Yeah. I don't even know if, like, reducing the points will change it that much.
Starting point is 00:11:04 I think USA will still be a heavy favorite, but I think they should try it for a year. And if you don't want to go to three days like the Ryder Cup, because you want that extra day to sell hospitality, make more money, bring more attention to the event, then you sit four guys on Thursday and Friday. So that way, we get down to 28 points from 30 points. Just do something to help the internationals out because they're just not as deep from top to bottom. And it shows every single year. And, I mean, the United States team is not going to be. slowing up anytime soon. I would say the internationals continue to get better, but they still, it's just, it's, it's too much. I don't think they can compete with these guys. I don't,
Starting point is 00:11:38 unless you have it at Royal Melbourne, that's about the only place we've ever seen it come close. It's where they won in 98 with the great Frank Nabilow on the squad. Lobelow, it's LaBolo, it's pronounced Lobelow. According to our guy from Sirius XM. But by the way, he is in Japan this week. I haven't seen him yet. I'm very excited to see. Perfect. Stay close to him. But yeah, Roe Melbourne, it was, it was, they were. I know they tied in South Africa when it was in the dark, but when it's not in that Royal Melbourne,
Starting point is 00:12:08 it doesn't really seem like they have much of a chance. They got to go to some place like that where it makes the Americans completely uncomfortable on a golf course that they're not used to playing and on a type of golf that they're uncomfortable at. Yeah, and also the creation of live golf tour and those guys not being allowed to play, it has crushed the internationals far more than it hurts the U.S.
Starting point is 00:12:28 Like, Bryson would be on the team. Brooks would probably be on the team. They lose Cam Smith, Joaquin Neiman, probably Mito, Carlos Ortiz would have a chance of making that team. They need that, they lost their depth.
Starting point is 00:12:40 The guys that are replacing those guys with aren't as close as what we have when Bryson can't play. We just go to another top 12 player in the world. I'm just saying, you add three or four guys from Lib and you add, most likely, at least two guys from Liv
Starting point is 00:12:55 onto the United States team. They get stronger too. So I get it. Like, yes, it'll help them. You had Brooks and Bryson to the United States team. It's only going to make them stronger. Oh, yeah. I still don't think it changes the result of the competition.
Starting point is 00:13:11 I definitely don't think it changes the result, but I think it changes how competitive it could be. If those guys were allowed back in, yes, the U.S. team would get better, but the live proportionally would get better than we would out of that by having got, like two of their top three, you could argue, after Hedekhi, with Joaquin and Cam Smith, not on the team. that's two of their top four for sure. And then if you added those guys and scaled back the points,
Starting point is 00:13:36 you could maybe have a competition. But I don't even know if that's enough caught. I just don't know that it needs to continue being this exact same thing. And we're hoping eventually that the internationals win one of these things or make it more of a rivalry. Because right now it just feels like a victory lap. Yeah, I'm with you. But congrats to the United States team.
Starting point is 00:13:57 They played awesome. It was really cool to see. I know they had a lot of fun up there, and they brought home the cup once again, so congratulations to them. It was a fun week of football, I would say. I mentioned earlier, Cowboys beat the Giants. How about my SMU Mustang, Sleeves?
Starting point is 00:14:11 More important, it's absolutely ridiculous what has happened to Florida State this year. We went from possibly a 14-point underdog at the start of the season to a six-point favorite, and we absolutely just whipped their ass all up and down the field a lot like we did TCU the week before there in beautiful Dallas, Texas. Bite your tongue. Bite your tongue. Act like you've been there before.
Starting point is 00:14:30 You're like the international team. It's nice to see y'all making it come. But the internationals need to go visit SMU. Like, how'd you guys do it when you're just getting punked all the time? But you're right. And also, it's a perfect reason my preseason rankings suck. FSU is 10th. Everyone expected them to be good.
Starting point is 00:14:45 They are in a steep decline. By the way, they may or may not be involved with the sleaze pick of the week this week. And SMU is on the uptick, too. So, yeah, what's happened to them, I think they're in full game. give up mode that thing's that ship's going down quickly. And you guys put the woods to them. Shout out to your Denver Broncos who got us a very, very important win against the New York Jets.
Starting point is 00:15:10 And just an offensive barn burner 10 to 9. 10 to 9. It looked like a President's Cup score update, but it wasn't. It was the final of an NFL of an NFL game. Oh, we set some records on the way there, Colt. I don't know if you know this. Bo Nix setting NFL records. becomes the first player to
Starting point is 00:15:27 throw complete multiple passes and throw for negative yards and a half. He was seven for 15 in the first half for minus seven yards and also became the first quarterback, I believe ever, to have at least 25 attempts, average less than 2.5 yards per
Starting point is 00:15:44 and win the ballgame. So are we back? Probably. Look out Denver Broncos. Here they come. More importantly, we got two of the much needed five and a half. We're a third of the way there. And the last two, I did not have us winning.
Starting point is 00:16:00 So, yeah. If you listen to Vegas, the overrunners changed to six and a half now. Okay. We're in a good spot. We're in a good spot. Yeah. Stay the course. All right.
Starting point is 00:16:11 Before we get to the interview, a huge shout out to golf, Kohler, because fall is coming. It's going to start cooling down in a lot of parts of the world. So you need to get up to Kohler right now and go play whistling straights with all of our friends up there. Four unbelievable golf courses. You got the Bass part three golf course, which we had a blast on. But it's not too late. Get up there.
Starting point is 00:16:29 It is a perfect way to get the fall started. Nice little boys golf trip to end the year. Yeah, if you're trying to cram one last in before the snow comes, good place to go up there. The Bass, by the way, shout out the bass with the frozen transfusion. Delicious. Chef's kiss over there. Good place to settle some scores at the end of the day. Yeah, love it.
Starting point is 00:16:47 So make sure you go check that out. Golf Colour, thank you all so much for all the support. Well, let's get to our guests this week because this one is an absolutely. beauty. He was unbelievable NBA superstar for the clippers, the nets. Where else he played? Boston all over the place. He was great. But more importantly, he just picked up golf a few years ago, and he is hooked. He's one of the funniest humans I've ever been around. We've got Blake Griffin joining us on subpar. All right, folks, we have got a ball player on the show here today. Six-time NBA All-Star, now taking his talents to the celebrity golf circuit and the world of
Starting point is 00:17:22 comedy. Also, one half of the 8 a.m. Invitational championship winning team, Blake Griffin, welcome. The champ. The champ is here. Finally, we have someone with some credentials on this show, winning golf tournaments. Thanks, guys. I mean, you know, all the other guests, I'm sure they'll get there, but, you know, it's my time. I put in a lot of work and got it done. Where would you rank the winning the 8 a.m. invitational amongst your career accomplishments? Man, to be I was first, first championship, I won. So that was sweet. Since high school.
Starting point is 00:17:57 Since top one. Yeah. Got a few in high school. But it's up there. Honestly, it was exhilarated. Coming into that 18th, I think we needed a par to win. And we got it done.
Starting point is 00:18:10 Yeah, I was going to ask you, because I was in that group. And it was, scorekeeping was secondary most of the time. At what point during that drunken mess of a final nine did you think? We might actually win this thing. You know, when we got paired with you guys, I was like, you know what?
Starting point is 00:18:26 Scoring seems to be a little lenient, but we did. I think we played pretty solid. Like, Chandler played really well. I made some shots here and there, but he carried us for sure. I am very, I was so sad. It was a mess.
Starting point is 00:18:38 This year. I got to go the year before. God, it's so much fun. There was a dog pile on one of the greens. We played the nine holes and in carts from the red T's at the wind in like three hours and 15 minutes. It was a mess.
Starting point is 00:18:50 It's beautiful. But you're the july. champ dude they can never take that from you that's true am i you know i might get like the trophy tatted somewhere you know i think you should i think maybe right across the chest yeah like yeah just a giant one right here yeah good or face face hats at least get the rings like why shouldn't i get the eight a m logo exactly just a clock and maybe maybe jimmy phallon and justin temberlake's face since yeah i can negotiate that if they're willing to pay i'd be happy to do some paid advertisement. I think that would look good. But let's talk a little about your golf game.
Starting point is 00:19:23 Like when did you start getting involved in golf? Really like three years, a little over three years ago. I was like kind of coming towards the end of my career and I was like, dude, I need like a competitive outlet or I could become a psychopath and, you know, I don't know what I'm going to do without like competition. So I just kind of like made the decision. I went and got fitted for some clubs. Didn't really have a swing or a good swing at all. Still don't. But, um, I, like, played my first round, probably shot, like, 1.20 something. And I was like, nope, got to, got to get better at this.
Starting point is 00:19:55 Can't just be this bad. And then, like, three rounds later, I was like, this is my thing now. I'm good. Got the bug. So it's only been three years. Like, no bullshit. It's pretty, for a guy that's, what, six, nine, six, ten just picked up the game three years ago. It's pretty good.
Starting point is 00:20:11 Like, what's your handicap right now? I'm, like, a 13 right now. I like fluctuates. I have, like, days where I'm just like, man, it feels great. I mean, it's golf. But like, and then I have days when I'm like, I can't. I can't. Yeah, I played yesterday.
Starting point is 00:20:23 I went par, par through the first five bogey, another par, double, double. And it's just like, fuck. Like, now I'm five over on the front. Like, what are we doing? That was a good round for me, you know? And then it just falls apart. I don't know. I'm ranting.
Starting point is 00:20:37 I'm angry. You're a golfer. You're a thing. This sounds exactly like a real golfer, dude. Yeah, I was going to say, welcome. Saying all the right shit. I got to ask this because we've been going to the Tahoe celebrity event for a few years now and it just blows my mind where where these people in the gallery stand.
Starting point is 00:20:52 I mean, they act like Tiger and Phil and Rory are playing out there because they just line the fairways like they do at PGA tour events when you guys just aren't that good. But this was your first time. This was your first time. No offense, because it was your first time playing. What was it like having people lined up down the fairways when you're trying to hit? Like, weirdly enough, the, like, the T-boxes weren't like my biggest thing. I was incredibly nervous day one.
Starting point is 00:21:16 I don't think I've ever been more nervous in a, in a, I can't remember the last time I was that nervous in a setting. But like, I wasn't necessarily worried about that. But like, I would get over my practice putts and I would be like shaking on my practice. Like just, you know, just find that rhythm. I'd be like shaking. But then what's crazy is day two and three, I completely settled in. Like, it was my first time playing in front of any sort of fans at all. And I, oh my God, I'm almost embarrassed in how nervous I was.
Starting point is 00:21:44 It was that. It means a lot. On the first T-box, I'm on the putting green and my caddy. He's like, I got to go to the bathroom. I'm like, oh, grab me some balls. So I go to the first T-box, day one. I'm walking up. Some guy sees me.
Starting point is 00:21:59 He's like, Blake, we need you on the first T-M-like. I'm heading there. Baker Mayfield has already teed off as I'm walking up. Vince Carter's next. They're in my group. Vince Carter teet off. My caddies is nowhere to be found. And Vince looks to me.
Starting point is 00:22:12 He's like, what do you need? I was like, yeah, give me a four iron. and like it kind of calmed my nerves because the crowd heard it and they kind of like laughed so it was kind of like it's not my club like I'm just you know I'm just I just got to do this and I like striked one down the middle and that happened to be my only good shot
Starting point is 00:22:26 the day day one it was so tough so your first real tournament you didn't even play one hole one shot without breaking the rules that's great I think because I was so bad on day one they're just like we're not going to dock you for that one not super stringent I don't
Starting point is 00:22:44 I don't believe with the rules out there. Is he played out, who is your cat? Was this big cat? He caddied for you in the, what was that, the practice round? Who's this guy that just didn't show up for the Teton? It wasn't his fault because I asked him to get some balls for me. And we also thought we had more time. So I'm not blaming him at all, but this is my boy Tyler from, he's a lakeside
Starting point is 00:23:03 caddy. I brought him out there. So, you know, shout out Tyler, not showing up to the first. I can, I love that. I can just see him. There's probably like five people in front of him in the pro shop. And he's just sitting there just waiting to buy some golf balls. No, we're on the team.
Starting point is 00:23:16 No, you go ahead. You go ahead. We're good, we're good. You'll play out of Vince. We got time. Vince, yeah, their specs are about the same. I mean, so you said you've been playing for three years. Now you're getting into the celebrity event.
Starting point is 00:23:27 You're in the 8 a.m. You're playing Tahoe. How do you feel you did your rookie year on the celeb circuit? Oh, 80.m was obviously awesome. It's great having a partner. Tahoe, like I said, dude, I was so bad day one. I think I shot a 94 day one. And I was like, out of 90, I think,
Starting point is 00:23:43 I think I was like 79. And then day two, I think I shot at 82 and then at 84. So I kind of like crept back up and I felt better about it. But, you know, it's like that thing of golf where you're just like, God, if I just played a little bit better day one, I could have cracked the, you know, top 40 or something like that. But, you know, I don't go into those terms being like, dude, I got a chance to win. I'm just like, let's just not kill anyone and, you know, keep it moving. How was the week, though? Did you really enjoy it?
Starting point is 00:24:12 I know you and Chandler killed it in the karaoke contest. That's our thing. The people want it. So now we got to keep you. Yeah, it was fun, dude. It was so many people. I'll say that, like every hole. Like there's no.
Starting point is 00:24:26 And it's not like a, it's not like you can be like, hey, guys, sorry, I got to concentrate. You're like, you know, I'm sitting 79 out of 90. So I'm just like signing autographs. And the people are just, like, at those tournaments, like, there's some, there's some guys the last day that, like, fall. me like they were at least at least at least at like 10 of my holes i felt it felt like 10 of the holes uh and they were just like they were so good they brought like great energy they had like recurring jokes through every through every hole um so shout out to those guys wherever they are didn't catch they were they were at 10 of your holes yeah dude that's a lot of it's a lot of
Starting point is 00:25:02 pause pause pause we got we'll add it we'll handle that for you we'll handle that for you how about to stay on tall for a minute how about like the casino at night is spectacular because everyone goes to the exact same room. I'm sure you knew a lot or most of the guys in that tournament. Was there anyone you didn't meet that you'd met for the first time like this guy, this guy gets it? God, dude, I met like a lot of the guys. Some of the hockey guys that hadn't met to Chuck and who else?
Starting point is 00:25:35 Yeah, like mostly guys, you just kind of see him around. Barkley was hilarious though. I never really spent a lot of time off the court or like away from basketball around Berkeley and we were gambling one night. He comes by and he's like, I'm like, what's up, Chuck? He's like, man, I just lost 1.5. I'm like, brought a million, lost it, borrowed five, lost it. He's like, I'm going to do karaoke.
Starting point is 00:26:02 That was awesome. That's a good impersonation. That is good. That's good. He's the MVP of that tournament. every year. I mean, there's nobody that has more fun than Chuck. He, like, host stuff. He's, like, got a cigar bar. We went there. He's like, he's just like an entertainer, man. He just, he just, he just, guy just gets it.
Starting point is 00:26:21 I mean, he goes, he walks in the front of that casino and works his way to the back to play back there. And it takes him 48 minutes because every person in that place wants to stop. If you met Chuck once, you feel like he's your buddy, everybody's trying to catch up. And he entertain, and he does, and he, God bless him, he entertains every single one of them the whole time. He uses a lot of energy that week. He's, he's like, that takes a special person to be able to, like, give that much energy to everybody, but you're right, he does it and does it. And it, it seems genuine. Like, it's not like, you know, it's not like he's just like, hey, how you doing, keep it moving? He stops and talks to you. It's pretty awesome. He was doing an interview on Saturday
Starting point is 00:26:59 after his rough night of gambling and sitting there, and he's like, man, I just love this tournament so much. Everyone is so nice, except for that damn dealer Vivian. I don't really like her. on national television. I was like, this guy, no one better. Vivian might have taken that 1.5er from the kid. And it was in a hurry. It don't take long. But through the game of golf, you've obviously met a lot of people,
Starting point is 00:27:21 and I know you've started a friendship with Max Homa through all this. How'd that start? Yeah, I, so I didn't really know him. It was kind of a cool story. I went to the Tour Championship at East Lake, 2020. And a buddy of mine knew him. So he went with me and we were like inside the ropes following him. And we went up, I came up and met him on the range, like before he teed off.
Starting point is 00:27:45 And he told me this story about I've gone to visit a kid that was at his, that he went to high school with. I went to visit him in the hospital. He like wasn't doing well. And unfortunately he passed away. And I wore one of his bracelets during a game. And I had it on like a post game interview. And he came up and he was like, dude, I don't even know if you'll remember this. But that kid went to my high school.
Starting point is 00:28:05 You know, I knew him growing up. and everybody at the school just thought it was like so cool. And it just like stuck with me forever. And I was just like, oh, well, it's, you know, it's not, I tell that story to hide myself up. But like, that's also the kind of guy maxed is to like remember that and bring that up. And then I got to go to dinner with him after the round. By the way, he shot like a 64 that day.
Starting point is 00:28:25 So maybe I should start caddians or be around all the time. We went to dinner that night and it was just like, this guy just fired his 64 at the tour championship. and he's just at dinner just hanging, talking, like the most down-to-earth person ever. And he's hilarious. His tweet about losing to a guy that was in jail. That's good, yep.
Starting point is 00:28:48 I mean, it might be one of the, it might be a tweet of the year for me. Y'all kind of have the same sense of humor. Kind of dry. Your delivery is really good. I can see y'all getting along. Yeah, he's the man. Great sense of humor.
Starting point is 00:29:00 And yeah, you're right. Super dry, but just like, seems like he always. I can't wait for his cat. I can't wait for his captions after the tournament because he always posts something and has an unbelievable caption. Yeah. Yeah, he's as good as they come. And he was getting hammered on that. Hey, roast my swing for a while.
Starting point is 00:29:14 He's having to roast 25 swings with 25 new jokes all the time to keep the gag going. Yeah. And somehow he kept delivering. And he did it. I also heard you kind of played lead blocker for his wife Lacey leaving the restaurant that night. Yeah. Yeah. It's the one thing I can do.
Starting point is 00:29:32 I can clear some space, you know. Get me out front. Yeah, dude, she was like, at the time, she was pregnant with their first kid and like, okay, guys, give her some room here. Yeah, beat it. She's awesome too. Yeah, the guy does everything.
Starting point is 00:29:48 Caddy, energy guy, bodyguard. Does it all. You got any other, so you met Max to become friendly with Max? Any other tour guys or professional golfers that you cross past with are like hanging out? Yeah, Justin Thomas. I'd known him from before at this, at Excel the same agency.
Starting point is 00:30:06 So I'd met him before, but had it hung with him. Oh, we went to that Netflix, the Netflix Cup, and he was there. And we played some Blackjack together. He's awesome. Moracalla, I've gotten to know. Yeah, those guys. You don't really hang out with these guys. Yeah, none of them.
Starting point is 00:30:26 Just rider cupers. Yeah, you want to hang out with these guys that, like, grind to keep their card each year? Honestly, man. No time for them. You're playing golf now. Are you watching golf? Like are you guy that tunes in on the weekend, Sunday, see who wins? Yeah, for sure.
Starting point is 00:30:42 Especially, I mean, especially majors. But I'll catch, if I'm sitting around, I'll turn it on Thursday and watch just random stuff. I really enjoy it. I never really watched. When Tiger was like, you know, when I was young and Tiger was just like crushing, I remember like watching some back then, but I never really watched golf. It was never like really a thing. for me. And as soon as I started playing, I was like, oh, this is awesome. Like, I could just sit there
Starting point is 00:31:06 and watch all day. So, yeah, I try to, I try to watch as much as possible. What is, what does a normal day look like for you now that you're retired? Oh, great question. I'm very, interested in this one, Blake. Don't give us like the dream day where you're super busy. Give us normal day, dude, Wednesday last week, go. Wednesday last week, I played Lakeside with a friend of the podcast. Chandler. We played with like, I think we played five. We played a little game of Wolf.
Starting point is 00:31:37 You know, I got out there like at nine, had some breakfast, hit a few balls. We got out there, came back to my house, played cards, went to dinner. Fantasy cab. I got, you know, I started a production company in 2016. So I have like a, I had that going on. But like there's days where I'm like, you know, Wednesdays and Fridays, I try to reserve for golf for sure.
Starting point is 00:31:58 But like, you know, Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, I'm like, meetings, different stuff, podcasts, obviously. Yeah, of course, guest appearances. A lot like Chandler, who's one of your closest, buzz, who's one of the greatest, by the way. You seem happy in retirement. I think a lot of guys retired, like they, of course, I'm sure you miss playing in some capacity,
Starting point is 00:32:18 but you seem like you got a lot of stuff going on, like you're in the entertainment world, comedy world, taking up golf. I feel like are you as happy now as you've ever been, or do you miss playing? I mean, I'll always miss, like, the games. As you get older, though, you know, for me, you just start playing less and less.
Starting point is 00:32:34 And, like, you know, it was away from my family. So all those things kind of factor in. I will say, like, being able to, like, retire on your own terms, definitely help me with it just because I had a chance to go back to a couple of teams. And I was just like, you know what? Like, I think I'm done. I had eight surgeries in my career. So I was just kind of like, man, I want to be able to walk.
Starting point is 00:32:58 I want to be able to enjoy life, you know, 14 years. years in the NBA two in college and the two in college feels like four because of how hard you have to work in college. But yeah, I'm just happy, man. I'm happy to get to do all this stuff. I've got to meet awesome people. I got to meet you guys this year through golf. So, you know, it's really cool like what retirement has brought, but also like the game of golf is like just introduced me to some awesome people. Yes, it does that. There's no doubt. I mean, I can't believe I was watching you play at Oklahoma. I remember way back in the day in the fact that I actually got to meet you now you're on a golf podcast. I definitely thought I'd
Starting point is 00:33:33 have been on a podcast called Pursuit of Healthiness before you would be on a golf podcast. Yeah, dude, we reached out. Even odds. Even odds. It was like a real people, my people thing, but God, how's the bummer we didn't get you on that podcast? I blame Excel. The pursuit of healthiness. Yeah, I can't believe I'm like that. You were the white whale. You were the one that got away. They always wanted on that thing. It's not too late. Probably, it's probably best you kept your secrets to yourself. You know what I mean? How many people would have just so much power if they knew all those secrets? Well, I mean, I could go on for hours, days, weeks.
Starting point is 00:34:06 I mean, yeah, he's got a lot of ways he pursues healthiness. Think about it. Why don't you just give me something real quick right now? Like, just give me a top, like health tip. Yeah, a couple things. Yeah. Like five hours of sleep a night. Good.
Starting point is 00:34:18 Very key. Five? Very key. Only five. Yeah, maybe three thousand steps a day. Okay. Yeah. I don't even know if that's a lot or not a lot.
Starting point is 00:34:26 See, that's nothing. Oh, God, no. Okay. I'm a health machine, guys. How much tequila is involved in that? Tequila is an upper and also known as the healthiest alcohol you can have. Yeah, it's the only upper, Blake. I don't know if you knew that.
Starting point is 00:34:39 So. You want, all right. Cool. Yeah. That's a little pursuit of healthiness for you. Yeah. I mentioned, I want to know, like, you're obviously an Oklahoma guy. And we had a golfer on here a few weeks ago, Brad Dawkey, who I asked him on a scale
Starting point is 00:34:52 one to 10, how much he hates Texas. Does he know you guy? He said 25. Where does your level of hate rank? I'm going to go with Brad. It's got to be 25. Really? So it's like, that's a lot. Red River shootout. You are just all in, oh, you kill Texas. I hate them. Oh, yeah. The stupidest thing ever is they made this like an unsportsman-like penalty. Yeah, that's so soft. It's really offensive, guys. Guys, don't do that. Like, come on. Yeah. If down is a penalty, up should be a penalty.
Starting point is 00:35:21 It's definitely real. I got recruited by Texas. And I really liked Rick Barnes, who was the coach at the time. But I just like in the back of my mind, I was just, like, in the back of my mind, I was just, like this could never happen i can't i can't go oklahoma to texas um it just just wouldn't happen so the hate the hate it's pretty real i wouldn't say hate but it's just like it's a healthy it's a healthy rivalry yeah yeah that would have been treason if you go you leave oh oklahoma and head down there really wanted to ride around in that wagon because that thing's really intimidating it tips over once in a while you can't sit over once in a while we get a little too sharp with a turn there. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:35:56 A little excited. A little excited with that bad boy. You only spent two years in college, but being the best player in college basketball, number one overall draft pick, was there anything more fun when basically you step on every court? And like, there's no one here. They can even come close to fucking with me. And I'm about to dunk on
Starting point is 00:36:11 everyone's head. I mean, you had some some aggressive dunks in college. I will say, like, between my freshman sophomore year, I went off. I went to and trained with this guy for like two and a half months. I had no money in college. was literally we trained six days a week morning night two a day there's really three a day some some days and like i will say like that set me up for my sophomore year and my sophomore year
Starting point is 00:36:34 coming back like i got back to campus and we were still doing scrimmages like team just pick up and i was like oh like you i really saw like the power of like hard work and like that kind of set me up for the rest of my career because i kind of always knew like if i like put the work in like just it it uses your mind just in general like if you feel prepared going into like a season or like a situation, a game, whatever it is, then it like puts your mind at ease. And then you just let your, you know, you let your training like take over. But yeah, I was like that sophomore year was like kind of like a dream sequence.
Starting point is 00:37:08 You know, it felt like every game you go into is just like try to, you know, try to do something better, try to do something new. And we had a good run, but we ran into North Carolina who was loaded that year. Well, that kid from Colorado busted his ass all off season. just put it your nuts on his face. How do you prepare for that? Yeah, dude, that's a salt, brother. I mean, he's a video, or I don't know what his title is now.
Starting point is 00:37:32 I think he's with the Knicks still. Now, he was a video coordinator with Detroit when I was with Detroit. Wow. Yeah, he like came up to me. He's like, dude, I played in Colorado. And I was like, oh, yeah. And then he was like, yeah, I was the one that was like running back. He's a great dude.
Starting point is 00:37:49 He's a great guy. I know, that poor guy. That's all he's going to ever be known for. Oh, yeah. I know you. I got a poster of you. Look back in your whole career, college or NBA. Is there one dunk that stands out to you where you just posted somebody? You're like, that's the one.
Starting point is 00:38:03 That's my favorite one. I think one of my favorites was like I had a dunk on Kendrick Perkins. And Kendrick Perkins was just kind of like this mean, like, you know, defensive stopper kind of. But he was just like, you know, he was just like such a, he's a nice guy, but he was like on the court. He was such a dick, which was, that's what you want. like you know especially as a teammate so playing against him and dunk on him was great but i will say like
Starting point is 00:38:27 i had this game against the nix my my rookie year and i had like two or three dunks that like kind of like stood out and like that was the moment that i looked back and like life just went like just just to the moon from there you know like it just felt like it never slowed down it felt like that game kind of put me like on the map a little bit i guess nationally or you know in the in the NBA world yeah i mean you've you have a lot i was looking up pictures last night because I was like, who's the guy that he absolutely just destroyed and it was the Colorado kid. I finally, I finally found him. I was like, you got to be more specific. There's a lot of nuts on forehead. We can talk about basketball all day, but I know Slees loves it.
Starting point is 00:39:05 I love it. I want to talk a little bit about stand-up comedy. Like, have you always been into that? And when was the first time you ever did it? I've always loved it. I like grew up watching stand-up, grew up watching Saturday Live, always loved comedy. And then I like, you remember when like Comedy Central was just putting out minute specials all the time. Like that was like when I was in high school and I would just watch Comedy Central all the time. So I'd love stand up. And then when I moved to LA, I became friends with some, some guys out here who do standup.
Starting point is 00:39:34 Guy named Neil Brennan kind of became one of my, one of my close friends and sort of comedy mentors in a way. And I would just go, we had the lockout. I would just go with him and I would go, I would go watch random sets. I would just go to the comedy store, laugh factory, whatever it is. And I was always like in the back of my mind, I was like, I wonder if I can do that. And I got invited, I got asked to host this show at Just for Laughs. It's a big comedy festival in Montreal.
Starting point is 00:39:59 And I did six nights in a row. So I wrote like 10 minutes for it. And it like, it went surprisingly well. And when I walked away, I was like, wow, I have, I kind of have like a new tool in my tool belt, like, especially for public speaking. Like stand up is like, public speaking is everybody's number one fear. Stand up, you've got to make people laugh while you're public speaking. So it gave me like confidence. you know to like be able to like be more relaxed in those environments and I just love it like I love like
Starting point is 00:40:28 trying to think of funny things trying to write jokes like writing joke is is really fun because you think of the idea and I'll put it in my notes folder and I'll come back to it or maybe I'll just have a random thought I'm like oh that's perfect that's the way in that's the punchline that's the setup and it's just always like I think I'll always do it no matter if I like do a bunch of stand-up from here on out or not it's just fun for me I can't believe you let norm McDonald down and didn't win back-to-back rookie of the year, though. Yeah, honestly, I was like, Norm, the girl regretting life.
Starting point is 00:40:58 I was watching that clip last night. You did an interview about it later on, and you're like, yeah, I don't think a lot of people, like, really got it that were sitting there in the media scrum. I'm like, dude, that was so good. Yeah, by the way, when I was going up, I'd gotten my rookie to year trophy. It was like that press conference, and he,
Starting point is 00:41:15 somebody just told me as I was going on stage, like, hey, Norm wanted to come. I was like, awesome. And then they'd throw him to mic, He puts his hand up. He's got his hand up for like three minutes. And I'm like, what is this dude going to say? That was just like so classic norm.
Starting point is 00:41:31 I'm like one of my favorite comedians of all time. And he, his like style is like irreplaceable. Yeah, you can't, no one can mimic that. You could have a transcript of Norm's set and it's not going to be funny. No. Because it's the way to live. Like that moth joke he did on whatever it was. Like that's the 15 minute moth joke.
Starting point is 00:41:48 It is a little of my favorite thing. Norm doesn't care about it. Like if anyone else gets. or whatever. It's just like it amuses him and he's the best. He's doing comedy for himself. And then if other people like it, then great. But if he's just doing it for himself. Exactly. How'd you get into like the roast world, which you've been great on some roast. I assume you already kind of answered it. I was going to ask you, you write all your material. It sounds like you do. I don't think many athletes do that. But how did you kind of get into the
Starting point is 00:42:12 the roast world, which is like a little niche of comedy? Yeah. So at the month, that just for last festival i went back probably 2000 was 18 or something like that and they have this thing called roast battle uh jeff jeff ross like he made it into a tv show and all that but i went to montreal
Starting point is 00:42:30 and i did they do a live roast battle and i just did like a guest thing right before the championship match and it was fun i will say like especially when you're at a place like that like all i started writing jokes but then you know dude like so many so many comics have been
Starting point is 00:42:46 so awesome and like here or try this or this or like you know so it's not really just sitting there just writing everything like i i i've definitely had help um but i do like to like put pin to paper and try to be the one and not just be like hey who's got jokes for me you know um but that's how i got into the roast battle and then i came home and i did jeff ross's tv show and then they asked me to do the alec Baldwin roast and i was like yep i'm in which is a good one you crushed it i mean that was on behalf of half the NBA and all the top 100 Billboard rappers. I was like, wow.
Starting point is 00:43:21 So good. Those things are so beautiful because like it's just under, I feel like it's kind of coming back full circle where now you can say things. It's like, it's okay, dude. It's a joke. Not everything's super serious. And we need that. Yeah, 100%. And that's the thing about roast. Like even
Starting point is 00:43:36 like in that time period where we were very, very sensitive about jokes, like roast felt like you could really get away with something. Like I said some stuff in that roast that like you can't just go up. and say or you can't put that in your special you know Rose kind of allow you like a little bit more space to be like a little bit
Starting point is 00:43:56 meaner and you all know like I think the thing is like you know you're all sitting up there you're all free game you're all putting yourselves out there to be made fun of so I think everybody feels so much better when you know you see the whole day is up there laughing and laughing up yourself I think that helps but I do agree it needs to sort of kind of swing back a little bit and we need to be able to like say these things because comedians To me, comedians are very important because they're like the, they're like the canary in the coal mine. When something's not right in society,
Starting point is 00:44:23 like, we have to let them be able to like, be like, hey, this is, this is fucking weird. You know, like, we got us talk about this. And they can do it in such a way that makes people laugh, but also, like, think a little bit too. I think, like, the best comedians are all the ones that, like, say stuff. And you're laughing. And then you're like, oh, shit, that's true.
Starting point is 00:44:41 You know? And you're like, that's where, that's where comedy really, like, hits its peak right there. If only there was stuff going on in the world right now, if only there was some messed up shit happening. Yeah, I actually have like a type five on like the war and everything. You want to try it out? You want to word smith that thing right now?
Starting point is 00:45:00 Try your new material right there on subpar. Who are the guys that you like to, if you are going to write a sudden, you want just like a comics perspective? Who are the comics you go to? Like, hey, I'm thinking about this, you know, then I get input on it. Definitely.
Starting point is 00:45:13 Neil Brennan, Neil co-created Chappelle show with Dave Chappelle. He's got multiple Netflix specials. And his stuff is really cool. He did this three mics special on Netflix where he had one mic was one liners. One was kind of like serious stuff and one was just straight stand-up. So he always does stuff that's like really, really interesting and cool. But he's like I said, I met him 2010 or 11, I think it was. And ever since then, he's like the guy that I go to first.
Starting point is 00:45:43 Like, hey, I'll just send him a random joke. And he'll, he always just, he'll add or he'll laugh or he'll, like, that's good. Think about this. That's good thing about this. So he, like the mind, his mind is brilliant. It's truly a thing of beauty to watch him just like put a joke together. That's cool to have. Cool to have.
Starting point is 00:46:00 And Chappelle's show. I mean, that was the like golden era comedy Central right there. It was just like, it's on tonight. We go. That's what we're watching. It felt like if he missed a Chappelle show episode and went to school the next day, you were kind of out of the conversation. That's how good it was.
Starting point is 00:46:17 It was just like you had to watch it live. Yeah. What was the, I saw a little clip on Instagram. You went on this guy's show and you were like, you're like, I was homeschooled. I was like the coolest kid in class and all this. Oh, yeah, yeah. Yeah. Stalbro, dude, Stabros is hilarious.
Starting point is 00:46:33 Man, Tom King, all this shit. Yeah. I was a teacher's favorite. Captain of all the teams. Teacher is hot. Yeah, that's good. I like, also, during the roast of Alec Baldwin, you took a shot at Robert De Niro, the legend. That was beautiful.
Starting point is 00:46:47 And you're just like, I'm sorry, I just met you. I felt so bad about that. So I had, for that, for that roast, I would go, I went up probably like 10 times in L.A. Comedy Store, in Hollywood Improv, and I would work on my material. I would just go and I would just pop into a show and say, hey, can I get some time? And they were great about it. And so I would go up there and I'd be like, hey, guys, I know, it's weird that I'm up here. But I'm doing the roast of Alec Baldwin.
Starting point is 00:47:11 like I want to try some jokes out for you and it was really it was really cool because you know when when the audience feels like oh we're getting like a little sneak peek they were like super receptive and so I kind of like honed in my my set my roast set like over the course of like a month and like really got it like tight and I felt good about all my jokes I cut the ones that didn't really work well or reworked them so there's like there was some some real time put into it respect to you for doing that because I mean it takes balls to get up on a stage and try to make people laugh, especially when we've been doing something else your entire life. You're not just like one of the celebs that shows up. Like,
Starting point is 00:47:47 somebody write me a bunch of funny jokes, then I'll half-ass read them on the teleprompter and butcher them. I mean, dude, I think it always comes. You can tell like the guys that like, you know, the comedians are always obviously the best on those things. But like you can tell like the celebrities who aren't stand-ups who like really like put in time or they're just very gifted comedicely, like timing-wise. But I just like first roast ever, I didn't want to like go up there and put up a duds. So I put probably too much time in, but I loved it.
Starting point is 00:48:16 It was so fun. It was good. You did much better than the situation. Situation at himself an off night. I heard this story. I don't know if it's true or not, but I heard that he was like, kind of like, he,
Starting point is 00:48:29 that is he like wasn't like the nicest person. And so the rider was just like, screw this guy. Just throw him some duds. I don't completely set him up, but you know. I feel like the whole day is was pretty much ready to hate. him anyways. Like, you know, he would have had to have been a 12 out of 10 to kind of
Starting point is 00:48:45 get the respect, I feel like. Yeah, that's true. That's true. I don't know if that story's true, but I always loved it. I hope it is. What do you got cooking next? You got anything you can talk about? Entertainment-wise? I've got some shows that I'm working on. Something for
Starting point is 00:49:01 me to possibly host. Nothing I can really share yet. I do got a big, I got another big celebrity golf tournament coming up in October. I'm excited about, so hopefully I get to announce soon. But yeah, I got some fun stuff in the works. But I really honestly wanted to take like a good year, a year and a half once I retired to like just like do the random stuff I want to do.
Starting point is 00:49:26 And just enjoy it before I kind of like jump back into like being like, you know, super regimented or jump into something that's like a lot more schedule oriented, you know. For sure. We totally. As you should. We've been taking years off. Last Wednesdays sounded like a pretty good job of doing that. You know, kind of take advantage of an beautiful Wednesday. As you should.
Starting point is 00:49:45 As you should. How you want to do it? Let's get to the emergency nine here. Blake, we're going to ask you nine fun ones to get to know you a little better. What should we, the first one, should we? Well, he's currently dating someone. We can still do it, though. He doesn't give a shit.
Starting point is 00:49:58 Other than Nikki Glazier, who's your celebrity crush? Hold tight on that one. Celebrity crush. it could be when you were a kid too so you don't offend anyone oh when i was a kid even mendes i watched training day for the first time and i was like yeah yeah yeah that's cool that makes sense definitely even mendoz early on good call all right good call all right since we just brought her up dude um i know it's all jokes on the roast but i'm being dead on us when i say I truly think you broke Nikki Glazer's heart
Starting point is 00:50:37 during the road when all of her jokes were about how hot you are, you know, and then all yours were just like, called her Larry Bird. Like, have you talked to her? I'm sure you've talked to her since then, but did that really get her?
Starting point is 00:50:49 Yeah, I kind of feel like it did. I don't, I don't, I mean, she's done so many of those rows. She knows, like, people are going to say, it was, yeah, because she went before me. I don't know how it ended up airing.
Starting point is 00:51:00 I think, yeah, she went first, but I did, I was sitting there like, a fuck the single joke I had about her was like the complete opposite of hers yeah she wanted to bang you in front of her grandparents hers were all compliments
Starting point is 00:51:15 about how much she wanted to bang you and then yours they got Larry Bird over here yeah she was great she's great sport she's so good very funny very talented tell you what her life her life changed after the Tom Brady roast I mean she went to a whole other level
Starting point is 00:51:31 crush that yeah that that roast was That roast was unbelievable. That was a really good one. A little bit long maybe, but there were some unbelievable sets. Hinchcliffs, that was,
Starting point is 00:51:41 like, nails. He's been like a roast guy for, I mean, he's done roast battles. He's a, he's a monster roast writer. Yeah,
Starting point is 00:51:50 usually be good on that show, kill Tony. Let's make that happen. I think about, I see, I see all those clips. It's like one minute. You got to make people laugh
Starting point is 00:51:57 in one minute. And like, if that first joke doesn't really, like, land, now you're fighting an up uphill battle and you by the way you only have 30 seconds left like it that that is like the people who go on and crush i'm like man good for you because that is not easy but it's also cool that tony gives them like the platform you know what i mean just random like open micers it's a cool yeah it's a cool
Starting point is 00:52:21 premise for a show and then you've had shane gillis sitting there as trump the whole time like oh god that one be funny he's he's he's awesome he's so good he's incredible um yeah we can stay on the stand-up What's more terrifying? The first time you ever got on stage, do stand-up comedy or walking in downtown Detroit at night? I got to be honest. Didn't walk in downtown Detroit at one time. Good choice. Stand-up comedy. I did laugh at during the roast with Jeff Ross when they said you're now the worst shooter in Detroit. Most violent city in America, you're the worst shooter.
Starting point is 00:53:03 That's a good. That's a good one. That was a good one, yeah. It was pretty good. Have we gotten over that ship to Detroit in the middle of the winter from L.A. to that's got to be one of the worst things as an athlete. To wake up and be like, oh. It just caught me so off guard.
Starting point is 00:53:19 But like Detroit, I will say like I enjoyed, I enjoyed living there. I lived out in like this suburb, like how to, you know, it's a good, it's a good place to live. It is cold, but it's a good place to live. And I did enjoy my time there. and there's there's some there's some great diehard fans there that you know really know basketball and really care so it was overall it was it was great we go up there very good answer yeah we go up there every year for the rocket mortgage and like we've stayed out in birmingham which is beautiful great restaurants everything it's awesome out there great golf
Starting point is 00:53:52 courses i lived right outside of birmingham so like that was like kind of like my hangout area yeah um yeah it's not bad at all right beautiful we'll go to another thing an area where i feel like you thrive been in a lot of commercials dude what's your favorite commercial performance that you've had um oh that's a great question i really enjoyed i did like some kea commercials for a while those were fun um i did a commercial for um oh my gosh i'm blinking uh oh my gosh shit i'm sorry I did this commercials. I was flying around on this jetpack and like in this room and like trying to deliver a line. It wasn't like an actual jetpack, but I was on this like lift and I had this like prop jetpack on.
Starting point is 00:54:45 I was like crashing into the wall and I still delivering lines. And it was like those those were just like so fun for me. I got to work with Jack McBray on some of the Kia commercials. We played like this like superhero duo. But the Kia ones were really fun for me because I, I just got to like do something like just like go all in on it and just be an absolute idiot. And that's all I wanted to do. Every commercial I ever want to do is like I'm just like, please can we do something fine.
Starting point is 00:55:13 I want to do the standard pro athlete like, you know, you see like the Draymond Green has this key commercial now where he's like in the car and like there's the wolves and like kids out to switch the door and it's like boom, no disrespect to Draymond. But like that's just not my interest. I don't want to do that. I want to do something that will make people out. Yeah, they got a basketball court on like top of a mountain out there. Like, whose house is this?
Starting point is 00:55:40 Yeah, game fly. I'm sorry, that was the commercial that I did where I was like going around on this jetpack. There you go. Nice. You've had some good. Well, speaking of Kia, you jumped over one in the dunk contest, but I would say the dunk contest kind of sucks as of late. What can we do to make the dunk contest great again?
Starting point is 00:55:56 I think you make, I've always said this. Like, you make it more of like layup lines. style dunk contest where it's not like this big huge production get eight guys don't get four and let guys kind of you know stand around on the court or figure it out where they like dude the dunk contest we're we're sitting there we get to go back in this auxiliary gym to like warm up and then they're like okay intros are in 30 so we walk back over we're standing around intros you come out you sit down then you watch the other guys go you're just like sitting down and getting up and there's like 10 to 15 minutes in between
Starting point is 00:56:31 So it's like you're not getting the best product by doing that because guys aren't like loose and you know getting into it So let guys just go one after another and keep it like figure out a way to like move it faster And then guys will be able to kind of like be more warm and try different stuff There's just like so much pressure to make it on the first try that it kind of like it takes away So I know they're trying to do a production and make it a thing but like put the best product out there and figure out a way to capture it I think is the way you make it better. It used to be so sick. I mean, all the big names.
Starting point is 00:57:04 Why do I get like that the price, you could change the format, but why do the guys like, why LeBron and they've been begging for him for ages? Why did he never do it? Like, John Moran, like these guys just say no now. Yeah, I don't, to be honest, I don't know. After I did it once, I was just kind of like, especially when you're in the All-Star game, like, All-Star break is like the one break you get. And I get it.
Starting point is 00:57:26 Like the guys back in the day did it. They played every game. And they, you know, it's just a different time now where those guys really want, like, Saturday night off, you know, and then they play, we'll play the next morning for the All-Star game. I think, I think that's maybe the only, I think that's probably like a bad answer. Like, no one's going to want to hear that, but I think that's it. I don't know. So today's NBA is soft. That's what Blake Griffin said.
Starting point is 00:57:48 Yeah, we'll run with that. Yeah. Yeah. I can just start calling guys soft. I can just like, you know, I think the dunk contest. Why don't these guys do it? Yeah, you could say I'd average 40. in this day's NBA.
Starting point is 00:58:00 That's the new thing. Everybody would average 35 from 20 years ago. Couldn't play back when I played. No, dude. Yeah, well, whatever. Yeah, that's what I'm saying. All right, I got two. I'm going to go with this one here.
Starting point is 00:58:15 Is it possibly you have the smallest dating pool in the world given that you only date chicks with more money than you? I got a tight, boys. I got a tight. Yeah, they're not tight. I didn't know whether they're not.
Starting point is 00:58:29 asking or not, but Chandler was leaning on me heavy to ask that. So, yeah. Blame it Chandler. Blame and Chandler over there. Yeah, I just defer all the blame. Hey, you're a smart guy. You're a smart man. Yeah. That is a small pool though, dog. Ain't many. You better make this one work. Any pool. I mean, no, not people. I guess. Yeah. Yeah. Oh, whoa. God. No ditty, no diddy, no did. All right. Who more accurately portrayed you? Okay, was it Austin Scott and Clipped or Norm MacDonald in sports show?
Starting point is 00:59:04 Norm McDonald hands down. It felt like the actor and clipped. They were just like, he came in for the audition and they were like, well, I guess. Like, should we just die there and like call it? Well, I guess. No. He was also like so serious. You know, like it was a very serious character.
Starting point is 00:59:23 And it's just like, I mean, you guys know me by now. It's just not me. So it's just kind of like, I, I, I, I tried to watch one episode. Actually, Gretzky was like, dude, you got to watch it. I love the show. He's like, I watched it twice. I'm like, watch you watch it twice.
Starting point is 00:59:37 He's like, come on. So we're in Gaza. We're up there and we're hanging out our buddy Mikey's house. And he's like, dude, just turn it on. We turn on one episode. And I got like, I can't do this. Like, I got to go. In their defense, I don't know where you go for these sports shows.
Starting point is 00:59:52 Like, where are you going to find a six, nine jacked dude with red hair that can look like you can handle basketball at the? Like, they don't make actors like that. Yeah. Yes, I agree. But, like, it's like showtime did a really good job. They did. That was shocking.
Starting point is 01:00:07 80s versus, like, today. But, like, man, like, DeAndre Jordan's character was, like, 6-1. He just had dreads. You guys couldn't find anybody that was, like, at least 6-6 to make it look like it, you know? I don't know. I should have showed up for the audition of you. You give him reddick. I mean, I guess.
Starting point is 01:00:30 It's good. Yeah. Come on. You can be on our team. I actually haven't seen the picture of Norm MacDonald when he was you. I want to see that. It was, well, the whole premise, he had the show in Comedy Central. The whole premise was like that he goes in the makeup chair and it was just me playing myself.
Starting point is 01:00:47 So it's like, he's like, he does this thing where he's like, yeah, give me that fake chin, that, like, strong chin right there. She, like, puts it on him. And he's like, no, it's not play Griffiny enough. more chin I was like more chin kind of a shot at my chin but I'll take it
Starting point is 01:01:03 oh god rip to one of the goats my last question was also about how much our Austin Scott resembled you
Starting point is 01:01:11 and how uncanny it was but I'll audible here and go to this will be an easier one you get to roast one NBA player and come up with the dais but one guy's got to sit there
Starting point is 01:01:21 and eat it who would it be well I mean the obvious answer is like you gotta do LeBron like Tom Brady did it got to do LeBron and you know obviously there's no short of jokes for anybody but you know he's been in the
Starting point is 01:01:34 spotlight for since he was 16 like there's so much so much material there you know and I obviously like when a guy like Tom Brady's like yeah he roast me you're like that's pretty cool you know the greatest of all time like you know and then like LeBron like those those type of guys doing it would be would be awesome do you think LeBron would I don't think so Don't. I could be wrong. I could be wrong. Yeah, I could be wrong.
Starting point is 01:02:01 But I mean, I didn't think Tom Brady would. And I think everybody was like, why is Tom Brady doing that? And I think afterwards he was probably like, probably shouldn't have that. Yeah, it was bad. Yeah. He said his family is like, it heard his family. Like, yeah, this is a roast, dude. Like this is going to be some bad shit.
Starting point is 01:02:17 Yeah. That's what it is. Thought they were going to get up. My last one here, your good friend Chandler Parsons, y'all have had some times together throughout the years. What's your nearest death? experience with him. So me and Chandler, we've known each other since probably 15, 16 years old. We played travel basketball.
Starting point is 01:02:39 And the way we kind of met, we were like standing next to each other on the free throw line. He said something kind of like just joking around. And I said something back. And we both kind of like laughed. And it was kind of like, you know, that moment where you're like, yeah, I guess, cool. And then, you know, you're 15. And then I think a little bit later, we were at the same camp and we hung out there.
Starting point is 01:02:57 and then I was in my team was in Florida in Orlando playing this tournament and he texted me he's like dude come over my guy cool so I go over to his house we shoot basketball in the backyard his mom's cooking and shout out Chandler's mom sweet lady we got these Salisbury steaks you know and uh you know when you're like chewing a steak and you're like I think I've chewed enough and you you you start the process Half of the Salisbury steak stayed in my mouth and half of it was like right here. And I'm at this like dinner table. His brothers are there.
Starting point is 01:03:34 I just met his parents and I'm like trying to get the Salisbury steak up or down. Either way, I'm just like, I'm just trying to breathe. And I kind of silently struggled with it. And I told Chandler afterwards, I had like tears in my eyes. I was trying to hide it. So the closest to death I ever came with Chandler was eating a Salisbury steak. that Blake's a strange character there, Channy. He seemed really nervous.
Starting point is 01:04:06 He's really chums up during meals. Yeah, he doesn't speak a lot. He's a strong, silent type. That's great. Well, Blake, man, you're the best, dude. So much fun of getting to know you over the last year. Thank you so much for coming on with us. Anytime, boys.
Starting point is 01:04:17 Appreciate it. It's fun. Appreciate you. See you, buddy. All right, that was Blake Griffin, joining us on subpar. What a beauty he is sleeves. By the way, the near-death experience with our good friend Chandler Parson
Starting point is 01:04:28 and choked on a Salisbury steak. Over here in Japan, the Wagyu, maybe it goes down smooth. You ain't got to worry about choking on it over here. Yeah, Mrs. Parsons needs to up that meat. You know what I mean? Give them the good stuff. Would have been disastrous. Future number one pick goes down at the supper table with CP.
Starting point is 01:04:45 How about that, though? I mean, guy from Oklahoma playing the NBA, all of a sudden, you know, I'm just going to start doing stand-up comedy one day. Let's just see how it goes. You and I have talked about this. I've obviously never done it. I don't know if there's a more terrifying thing in the world than getting up there in front of people. And not only, like he said, public speaking is very scary, but having to make people laugh while you're doing it, uh-huh, no, thank you.
Starting point is 01:05:07 Yeah. And when you spent your whole life doing something else and becoming one of the best in the world, I give him proud of what I said, like, the fact that you're going to the comedy store and, like, workshopping your, you know, your roast bit for Alec Baldwin and things like, like putting actual time into it. By the way, like, they get these athletes and other celebs, entertainers to come up and do these roasts. like none if very few if any are actually writing their own stuff and blake's like writing his stuff he has help from other people but it's a that's a daunting world to get into and it takes some some confidence and some props but he's a funny dude and by the way he's for a guy that's six 10 just diesel and never really played golf until now he's pretty solid for how little time he's played the game him and chandler both need to be in the field every year in tahoe because that's what that event's all about. I mean, you got the guys that can compete and win. Those guys
Starting point is 01:05:58 are they're going to do it. But they bring the energy, they bring the fun, and that's what that event's all about. Yeah, and they're the champions of the 8 a.m. invitational, so they will be back. I am 99.99% sure they had no idea that they won until they handed the trophy to them. They were not grinding it out towards the end, one of the all-time fun, fun days out there. But shout out to Blake. He's a good one. He's a good one. Love those guys. And sorry for the tough question of, Hey, Blake, you know, what's your everyday kind of look like? You mean to ask such a tough question?
Starting point is 01:06:30 Oh, buddy. Hey. Hey, I got stuff. I got stuff. I was like, dude, if that was my day and I had a trillion dollars, I'd be like, you want to know what my day looks like, whatever the fuck I want it to look like. That's what I do. That's what I do. Yeah, that's exactly how it is. He's just choosing to do other stuff, but he's in a pretty good spot. All right. Well, let's get to, thanks to Blake for coming on. He is welcome anytime. Kind of like my Commodore, George. Brett, Mark Grace, those guys, anytime you want to come on, you're more than welcome to join us on subpart. But let's get to some gambling. So, Lee, I've been pretty hot with these football picks through four weeks. Four and O to start the year. You're Denver Broncos, went out there to the Jets, got seven points, won the game outright.
Starting point is 01:07:10 So I'm going to stick in the NFL, bud. And Broncos? I have been, no, I'm not going to Broncos this week. I'm sorry. I hate to break it to you. But these Washington commanders, they're going right now. Cliff Kingsbury, Jane Daniels,
Starting point is 01:07:24 they're slinging the football around. It is fun to watch. They got the Cleveland Browns coming to town this week, and the Browns suck. And they're only giving up three points. So give me the Washington commanders, that offense ran by Cliff Kingsbury.
Starting point is 01:07:37 Dan Quinn, we miss you in Dallas as the defensive coordinator because we got some stress right now. But give me the commanders minus three this week. They look good. I did not expect them to come put the Cardinals in a box at home. After the Cardinals have showed some glimpses
Starting point is 01:07:51 of looking good. Jane Daniels appears to be the crown jewel of the draft at this point. He didn't throw for minus seven. He hasn't said any NFL records that I'm aware of, though, Colt. So there is that. Don't hate that pick at all. I'm going to stay in the college football world. Shout out to Oklahoma for getting the job done.
Starting point is 01:08:09 When I put that pick out last week, Colt, I did not know that the entire receiving corps for the University of Oklahoma was out. But nevertheless, they got the job done. We mentioned them earlier. Florida State Seminole Program is in a downward spiral of which I've never seen before. They are at home this week, but they are playing Clemson, who since they got worked by Georgia, week one, has been spectacular. They're averaging about 50 points.
Starting point is 01:08:34 I feel like they're kind of trying to prove, hey, that game wasn't a great representation of us. And they go to Florida State where I think that stadium will be as empty as it's ever been. I don't think a lot of those guys really want to keep going on the season at National Championship hopes, and now they're completely irrelevant. Give me Clemson minus 13 in a hook in Tallahassee. I think they dump them. Wow.
Starting point is 01:08:54 I mean, how about the start of the year when the schedule comes out and you see that game? That's probably possible like game day site. Herb Street in the boys, possibly going down there. Now you're talking about the stadium not even being filled with fans because both teams aren't that great. I don't know what's going on. But just in case Bobby Surah, who's listening to the legendary basketball player at Florida State, who lost a nice little chunk of change to me on that Florida State SMU games. What's he doing bedding on Florida?
Starting point is 01:09:18 If I was even an alum, I just like, look, it's off this year. We're not doing it. We've got to take a year to regroup. They got some stress down there. They do. But that was a lot of fun. Got to thank Blake Griffin again, golf color. I got to give you a little look at Mount Jeff Fujimoto.
Starting point is 01:09:35 If I can figure out how to get out of this door. Yeah, it's tricky over there. They open the reverse way, I think. His damn doors in Japan are talking to get out. There we go. We're figuring it out now. The toilets in Australia. Let me give you a little view of Mount Jeff.
Starting point is 01:09:48 Oh, wow. Very lush. There. Well, this damn zoom in on the camera. Look at that. There's Jeff Mount Fuji right up there. It looks taller. It looks taller than I remember.
Starting point is 01:10:01 There it is. Right over my shoulder. There's shoulder. God, these cameras are confusing. Yeah, you're struggling. This is first time. Hey, buddy, I've been up since 3.30 a.m. Okay.
Starting point is 01:10:10 You're doing a hell of a job. Hey, bring the noise at that Asian Pacific Am. You know what I mean? Throw out some weird shit. on the call maybe. I'm going to try my best. It's going to be a lot of fun over here. I can't wait to go explore Japan. But also, I'll see you next week back in America. Enjoy it, my man. All right, boys, have a good one. We'll talk to you on next week's subpar.
