Starting point is 00:00:09 Billowing clouds of thick smoke, undergirded by fierce red flames, appeared in the distance on the western border of England on the night of August 26, 2008. The sprawling estate was something out of a storybook, with a horse table, riding ring, multi-car garage, kennels for hunting dogs, and lush green grass and gardens covering 16 acres. Responding officers and firefighters descend on the scene. As one steps onto the property, he inhales the sharp tang of burnt wood. Shockingly, the police and fire department realized they can't even reach the house to begin putting out the flames because a horse trailer is sitting in front of the gate. All of its tires have been flattened.
Starting point is 00:03:29 This doesn't appear to be an accident. and whoever caused this means business. Moving the obstacle as quickly as possible, 12 crews of firefighters start to tackle the enormous task of putting out the raging fire. A fire so hot that the police are kept from investigating for three days as more and more evidence perishes amongst the ashes. Finally, detectives are back on the scene amidst the debris.
Starting point is 00:03:59 One catches glimpses of, shattered glass, twisted metal, and scorched belongings, all indicators of the fire's ferocity. He sees reminders of the lives within the home. Bookshelves with mysteries, a first-aid book for horses, and cans of food on the shelves, all covered in ashes, but fully intact. But one item stands out as a reminder of how fire can attack anyone anywhere. It's a handwritten list. It's a handwritten list of family meals for the week. Its edges are singed and fragile, a snapshot of normalcy amidst chaos and heartbreak. Each step, the detective takes, brings a new wave of emotions as he navigates the scene. The sheer devastation is overwhelming, a weight on his shoulders
Starting point is 00:04:51 that's both physical and emotional. Questions swirl in his mind, a relentless stream of uncertainties and what-ifs. He tells his partner it's like a clay oven, turning everything into ash. He can't help but feel a sense of urgency, a need to piece together the puzzle before more vital clues slip through their fingers. Amidst the disaster determination takes hold. They may be facing an uphill battle, but they're here to unravel the truth and bring justice to those whose lives were forever altered by this truth.
Starting point is 00:05:28 tragic event. By now, detectives and firefighters all know who inhabited the home. Hoping beyond all hope that the family was away when the fire occurred, detectives began searching through the ashes. In the living room, gingerly stepping through soot, glass, and charred wood, one steps on something spongy and immediately feels regret because he knows it's a body. Husband Chris Foster and wife, Jill are lying in the middle of the living room, on top of a half-burned mattress that had fallen through the ceiling. They later discovered the Foster's only child, 15-year-old Christy, burned beyond recognition.
Starting point is 00:06:13 Shropshire, a county in the West Midlands region of England, is known for its picturesque countryside, historic market towns, and rich cultural heritage, situated in western England and bordered by Wales to the west and Staffordshire to the east, Shropshire offers a diverse and beautiful landscape. Businessman Chris, his wife Jill, and their 15-year-old daughter, lived on their 16-acre estate and enjoyed the scenic beauty of rolling hills, valleys, woodlands, and rivers. The Fosters bought the manor in 2004 for $1.8 million and invested thousands more in its enhancement, adding a picturesque lake and large enclosed area for horses. There were also stables, dog kennels, and a huge multi-car garage.
Starting point is 00:07:06 Close acquaintances said that the residence was Chris's pride and joy, and the mere thought of losing it would have deeply upset him. Chris was a likable guy who worked hard. He had the mind of an entrepreneur and realized a brilliant idea following the tragic aftermath of the Piper Alpha Oil Platts. form explosion in 1987, killing 165 men. At the time, Chris's accountant said it came to him in a flash. In the late 80s, Chris sold pizza boxes as a recycled form of insulation, which is where
Starting point is 00:07:42 his idea originated. He realized that combining various materials like unique rubber and plastic could lead to a new type of oil rig insulation. He named his invention Olva Shields. but he needed to prove it could do the job, so he mortgaged his house to buy gas for a demonstration. This involved using the material on an actual rig and hoping it wouldn't explode after being exposed to flames in high heat.
Starting point is 00:08:14 Even his mother was a nervous wreck watching the test. Chris was elated when the rig withstood the challenge and his face lit up with excitement. Major oil companies jumped aboard and began placing orders, leading to a fast fortune for Chris. He even bought the mansion in Shropshire on the same day that his wife fell in love with it. As the business grew, along with his bank account, so did the shadows cast by his questionable dealings, leaving a trail of unsettled debts and fractured trust.
Starting point is 00:08:48 It appeared that Chris might have actually crossed someone so dangerous that they were willing to annihilate the entire estate, including Chris and his family. Detective speculated the answer may lie with a mysterious card someone taped to the gate just days after the fire. It read, money is the root of all evil. The Fosters were living the life of royals when they bought their English manor in 2004, with cash, I might add. By the time 2008 rolled around, Jill's dream abode contained almost $300,000 worth of expensive antiques.
Starting point is 00:14:56 Meanwhile, Chris leaned into a passion for collecting classic cars, including two his and hers Porsches, an Aston Martin, and Jill's four-by-four. But shadows of doubt and betrayal lurked behind the facade of this picture-perfect lifestyle, as they often do. Rumors swirled of extramarital affairs, with whispers suggesting that both Chris and Jill were entangled in a web of secret liaisons. Sounds racy. Some sources even claim that Chris juggled as many as eight girlfriends simultaneously, and Jill carried on with her own lovers. despite posing as a monogamous couple. Some started to suspect they had an open marriage. The fosters broke the rules in a lot of ways, including failing to pay taxes.
Starting point is 00:15:51 This was a more serious matter than Chris led on to his family. It led him into shady business dealings that had prompted threats, accusations of blackmail and betrayal, and a level of paranoia that moved him to keep a handgun in his car. In 2003, Chris made a deal with a supplier to manufacture his product Oliveshield exclusively. Sounds good, right? Yeah. Except that by 2005, two years later, his debts far outweighed as assets by about $3 million,
Starting point is 00:16:23 mainly due to extravagant spending on mansions, cars, guns, and club memberships. You know, all the good things in life. Desperate to cut costs, though, Chris turned to a cheaper Californian supplier and broke the contract, leaving the so-called exclusive supplier with a warehouse full of unsellable Olvis Shield, a successful lawsuit against him, and plenty of angry people, all pissed off at Chris. Things became vicious when a judge criticized Chris's lack of ethical business practices. The supplier, he reneged on, gained total control of the Olvis Shield patent, which has since
Starting point is 00:17:04 become a significant player in the oil rig industry, if you don't know. Meanwhile, it's inventor. Chris was left with little to do but care for his horses and his acres, now that he no longer owned it. That's exactly what neighbors began witnessing. Chris riding the tractor for seemingly no reason, tinkering with anything and everything on his property to stay busy. Neighbors remember that Chris meticulously kept the stables. kennels, and property spotless. Chris was highly competitive, feeling he had to look his best and be the best at everything. Unfortunately, this came at the expense of some animals they kept.
Starting point is 00:17:49 He stored guns all over the house because he loved hunting and target shooting. Typically, he would hold target shooting competitions with his big-wig friends, whom he always beat. But occasionally his targets nowadays included family pets. His wife kept pens full of prized doves as pets, and everyone who knew her was well aware of how much she doted on them. Yet when they got into the garage and left droppings on his cars, his precious, precious Porsches,
Starting point is 00:18:24 he unleashed bullets on the birds. And when his daughter's pet Labrador retriever got into the neighbor's sheep pen and ran them into a frenzy, the neighbor got upset. So Chris's simple solution was to shoot the dog. Problem solved. What a dick. Of course, daughter Christy was scathingly sad, and his friends were shocked that he would heartlessly put down his daughter's beloved dog.
Starting point is 00:18:54 But his friends would also describe him as, like Jekyll and Hyde. Jill was all too familiar, so she kept her distance when he was. was in a mood. It wasn't until detectives were given full access to the property and the CCTV footage, days after the fire, that they learned the horrible truth about the arsonists that wiped out an entire family. The lead detective pours over the footage. Each second laden with a sense of impending doom.
Starting point is 00:19:24 The timestamp reads 3.10 a.m. as the figure approaches, a haunting silhouette to against the backdrop of night. In hand, he had a 22 rifle with a silencer and a lamp to light up his targets. The scene unfolds with eerie precision. The killer moves with purpose, a man possessed by a meticulously crafted plan. The air crackles with tension as the rifle whispers its deadly intent, muffled by the silencer, but no less menacing. The detective gets a sick sensation in his stomach as he knows how this will all play out.
Starting point is 00:20:06 As the figure nears the kennels and stable block, shuffling hooves and soft whinnying ripple through the night, the shots are muffled and the sparks are like tiny fireflies until the figure is seen setting fire to the hay. The stables erupt in flames. could almost taste the metallic tang of gunpowder in the air, mingling with the acrid scent of burning wood. The CCTV footage captures the macabre and destructive finale. Horses fall.
Starting point is 00:20:43 Their majestic forms reduced to lifeless carcasses. Their final moments shrouded in agony. The dogs, loyal companions, turned unwitting victims, meeting the same fate. Their barks silenced forever by cold steel. And the doves let loose in the wild defend for themselves. With methodical efficiency, the killer seals the fate of all the animals, dragging their lifeless bodies to the smoldering stables,
Starting point is 00:21:17 almost as if to bring order to the mayhem. The first detective to brave the scene is met with the aftermath of this. horror. The carnage is a visceral assault on the senses. He shot them all in the head. His voice trembles as he recounts the gruesome details. No distinction, no mercy. To him, the woman, and child were the same as the animals. They're all found dead with bullets in the back of their skulls. The killer was none other than Chris Foster, who after taking every life on the property, set it all ablaze and returned to the bedroom to end his life next to his already dead wife. As the flames draw closer, the bed remains untouched for a fleeting moment,
Starting point is 00:22:17 and a sense of strange tranquility washes over him. However, as calm is short-lived, as the burning sensation in his chest intensifies, morphing into searing pain. In his final moments, he reflects on his brilliant ingenuity, having invented a fireproof product destined for eternal recognition, yet the bitter irony stings as he realizes that he's become the very instrument of destruction. destruction in his own home, consumed by flames likely to transport him to eternal damnation. Most people don't plan on feeling terrible the next morning.

On the day of this unspeakable tragedy, Chris, Jill, and Christy had gone to a neighbor's barbecue. A day like any other. A photo shows each with a smile wider than the next. Chris looking relaxed and casually happy. Jill with a broad, picture-perfect smile. And Christy, with transparent happiness.
Starting point is 00:24:58 They couldn't have possibly known what lay in store for them. That evening, Christy texted a friend. Hey, got to go now. Dad's turning off the Wi-Fi. Jill turned into bed at her usual time. And Chris waited. He waited with months of tension, turmoil, and angst all bottling up inside until the final moments before he executed his plan. Then he was calm, knowing it was going to be over.
Starting point is 00:25:32 Although his decision shocked almost everyone, including his unaware family, some noticed clues. The Foster's housekeeper and friend recalled that shortly before the murders, Jill and Chris, Chris were revisiting their lives together, looking at family photo albums and watching their marriage video while shedding tears. Was this life review at Chris's behest or just a coincidence? In August, his former partner texted Chris asking if he was okay. Chris's response was not good. Three different times he talked to his doctor about having suicidal thoughts and he began
Starting point is 00:26:11 medicating with antidepressants. He even allegedly talked to some previous associates about using a gun to shoot himself, but added, Can you look after my wife and daughter? He told another friend that no liquidators would ever take his home or property, insisting I would off myself before that. They would have to carry me out in a box. His fears seem to have become reality.
Starting point is 00:26:38 Just one week before, the decimation, a housekeeper found an envelope on the gate, that read for Chris Foster only. It turned out to be a letter from an enforcement officer giving Chris a date the house would be repossessed. His assets were already frozen. On the Friday before he killed himself and his family, he searched suicide on the internet.
Starting point is 00:27:02 One friend remembered an ominous moment of foreshadowing. Standing outside on Chris's property, he tells a reporter that just weeks before the fires, he hears an abrupt and deafening crash that shatters the peaceful moment. The sound reverberates, setting off a ricochet of reactions. Dogs barking, horses whining, and doves fluttering in their cages. A massive branch resembling a fallen tree had crashed onto the path below with an earth-shattering thud. Chris, a blur of urgency and adrenaline, rushes towards his friend coming away from.
Starting point is 00:27:42 from the scene. At the same time, his friend is rushing towards Chris. His voice carries a mix of relief and disbelief as he recounts the near-miss with the massive branch. He gestures animatedly, describing how his tractor narrowly avoided destruction by a stroke of unexplained luck. The air is heavy with the scent of freshly cut wood, mingling with the earthy aroma of the surrounding foliage. The friend sees the fallen branch, its gnarled limbs sprawled across the path like a fallen giant, a stark reminder of nature's unpredictable power. He falls silent describing this moment when the weight of it all settles in. The rustle of leaves and the breeze and the distant chirping of birds create a solemn backdrop to his thoughts.
Starting point is 00:28:34 After a moment's pause, his voice breaks the silence. His words tinged with a somber reflection. He thinks again about the note found on the gate saying money is the root of all evil. He certainly didn't put it there, but he realizes that the author has simplified the truth to its core. He contemplates the what-ifs, acknowledging the sobering reality that the branch should have fallen directly on his friend that day. But sometimes the shoulds in life don't always happen.
