What is Star Wars about good versus evil you know Darth Vader in the dark side against against the force being the forces of good.
Hello and welcome to season 5, episode 123 of Sword and Scale, where everyone's so coddled from an early age. Everyone's special.
Everyone's special, everyone's unique. You can have your own reality that only applies
to you and nobody has the right to tell you otherwise. While the following story is an example
of what happens when that idea is taken way too far. Mix in a little mental illness, and guess what?
illness and guess what? A whole lot of fucked up ensues. Stay tuned. I'm on a roundhouse road in Bourne-Nasse.
Forgot a car fire?
Another road?
A car fire?
A car fire?
A mental road?
Yep.
This fire work seems like in a car, this means they're exploding.
Okay, where is it? It's like in a card, this thing's exploding.
Okay, where is it?
It's right in the middle of the road. It's right at the beginning. Oh shit.
In 2015, 31-year-old Anna Tripnikova was living with her 30-year-old wife, Lisa, in the town of Born, Massachusetts on Cape Cod.
They were both members of the United States Coast Guard, and their condo was located
a short distance north of their respective bases. On the evening of February 4th, after
watching some TV and falling asleep, Anna recalls being woken up in the middle of the night.
There I think was some sort of noise to where she kind of stirred in bed, so I think that
woke me up and I half asleep kind of
remember some noise I don't know what it was.
We've all had moments like this, where we wake up late at night, hear a noise, and convince
ourselves that something is wrong.
Eventually, the noise subsides, or we find a way to ignore it, and get back to sleep.
But as Anna and Lisa laid in bed together,
trying to figure out what the source of the noise might be, they noticed it was getting
louder and closer.
And then I think I heard some other noise and a lot more pronounced, I guess, and then
I just heard very heavy stomping like someone is approaching up the stairs.
So you heard some heavy footsteps you thought on the stairs? What's the next thing that happened?
I've told body storm through the door, the entrance door to the bedroom, which was kind of at the end of our bedroom,
and our bed was, so it was a little long.
It was dark in the room, so the person was addressed in all dark,
and we saw, I think I remember identifying like a flashlight
because it was shining in our faces and at some point you can
write I could see that it's a rifle. It was after two o'clock in the morning a
man wearing black tactical gear and a ski mask was standing in the middle of
Anna and Lisa's bedroom barking orders at them. He had a GoPro video camera
strapped to his chest and he was armed with a semi-automatic rifle a shotgun and a 9mm pistol
So what happened next?
Well, I wasn't as cooperative because
It didn't seem right that it was maybe a wrong house
He just kept ordering out he came up to the edge of the bed and
pulled the covers off of us.
And at some point after that, he got my phone
that was on my right, on the nightstand
and threw it away somewhere.
I'm not sure where.
And just continued doing that.
I think at that point point we were very panicked
and it seemed very like delivered towards us
that it was not a mistake.
Anna and Lisa still had no idea who this man was,
but he seemed to know exactly who they were.
He seemed to be agitated
and he said to get on separate ends of the bed on the floor,
face down Lisa kept objecting and I think asking,
what do you want? Like who are you?
He had a mask on and a lot of tactical gear.
So we had still no idea who it was or why.
And at that point, I believe he cocked the gun
and kind of approached us.
So I totally said to just do whatever he wants
and to get down on that side.
And then I also followed.
So we both at that point got an opposite size of the bed.
What's the next thing that happened?
He threw handcuffs at us.
He reached them from the back of his gear.
And he threw one to me first and through Tully said the other.
And he directly spoke to her and said
in a very facetious way, you know what to do with them.
Neither of us complied and the last thing I wanted to be is. He noticed that and was shouting and ordering more.
Command saying, put them on.
I put the handcuffs on my side on my right wrist and I hid my left hand under some clothes or something so that I could avoid not putting them on completely.
So you put them on one wrist, but not the other?
Is that fair to say?
Yes.
What's the next thing that happened?
I don't think Lisa did it. Did it? I believe she just was very defiant.
Actually, before the handcuffs, because Lisa kept asking, who are you and what do you
want?
He did take the mask off.
The attacker removed his mask to reveal a familiar face.
Lisa shouted the man's name.
And did you recognize who it was at that point?
I did because she yelled out his name
in shock and so it kind of just both
came together for me as well because I wasn't as familiar with him.
Who was it? It was Adrian Loya.
On February 5th 1984, 31 years to the day before he would storm into Anna and Lisa Trubnikov
his bedroom, Adrian Thomas Loia was born in El Paso, Texas.
Growing up, Adrian was a loner.
He didn't socialize much, and he had very few friends.
After graduating high school, there was only one friend he would stay in contact with.
In how would you characterize your relationship with Mr. Lloyd?
Prentchip?
And when did that start?
In high school, I believe.
Adrian sat near Jacob Heller in high school Spanish class, and the two hit it off. They ended up spending a lot of time together
outside of school, playing video games,
and watching sci-fi movies.
After graduation, Jacob went off to Washington, D.C.
to go to college, and Adrian joined the military.
Do you know where he was while you were in college?
Maybe basic training.
For what breach?
For the Coast Guard.
For the Coast Guard.
And had you had any discussions with him about him joining the Coast Guard?
I guess, yeah.
Can you do remember basically why he said he wanted to join the Coast Guard?
Not really, I think he joined because he had no other specific interests or plans.
To learn more about Adrian's background, we got in touch with Attorney Drew Seideli,
who would eventually be hired to defend Adrian at trial.
This quote, individual Adrian lawyer, signed up with what he thought would be his future
and his career with the United States Coast Guard. He was out in California at what's called
the IT or training as an IT tech with them.
Again, another resource where he'd find himself alone, working the computers.
He's somewhat excelled in that.
That was his training out in California after the boot camp for the Coast Guard and so on
and so forth.
When he was first sent out to Alaska on their base out there to Kodiak.
And that's truly where it all began.
Kodiak is a small island off the southern coast of Alaska.
And while it might be a nature lover's paradise, living somewhere as remote as Kodiak, can
be lonely and isolating, especially for someone like Adrian. Not only is this fellow in this environment that,
in and of itself, Cody, Echolaska, is this cold, barren place.
Now we have this fellow who is devoid of, again, these interpersonal relationships,
devoid of any close friends, devoid of any habits other than
his own private somewhat strange ones and then comes
into the picture is the ultimate victim. I'm looking at a picture of her now
this is I still have in fact so many evidence in and around the office because
so volumeness but she comes into the picture now as another IT with the Coast Guard.
Adrian met 28-year-old Lisa Berlenga at a Coast Guard morale event in September of 2011,
and he was drawn to her.
He told me that he met someone who was either on his same base or in his unit or who worked close to him and that he found kind of a kindred spirit
and they had a lot in common.
Now she's, I have some described kind of cracking the outer shell
of Adrian Loya, the shell that was always guarded
and protected himself and his psyche, let's call it.
Again, being that fellow was kind of alone
on an island in his mind.
So her originally, starting to develop this relationship, he somewhat opens up his guarded
self too, and they became pretty friendly.
It again, barking on these little television watching some
video gaming, some texting with one another.
He doesn't know at that time that she is involved with another, another Coast Guard woman.
Adrian had been disappointed to discover that Lisa was in a long-term relationship with
a woman named Anna Tribnikova, whom she would eventually decide to marry.
And did you in fact get married?
Yes.
Where did you get married?
In New York City.
Do you know when that was?
The Sumpa 30th, 2000, and 11.
Despite this, in his conversations with his friend Jacob,
Adrian started to talk more and more about Lisa.
I believe that the tone of his conversations was concerning because he would bring up
the fact that she was in a relationship, but he seemed very strongly interested in getting
closer and closer to her to Lisa.
Adrian was fixated on Lisa, and in his own peculiar way, he seemed to love her.
But in the fall of 2012, that love turned to hate. One September night, while Anna was
out of town, something happened between Adrian and Lisa that would cause him to harbor resentment
towards her for years to come. There was an incident at her apartment and I don't know exactly what happened, but he
described that for some reason he was at her apartment at night and they were drinking
and watching a television show together. He said that she made some sort of advance
towards him and he refused. He was traumatized and frozen at this point.
He's pushing her off. She then gets up and says, I'm going to bed. She says, come
with me. She gets up from the couch, goes into her bedroom, and he doesn't know what to do.
He's somewhat ossified out on the couch.
He's scared, he wants to run.
He doesn't, he's not worried about her because she's inebriated.
He then hears a bang.
He's worried and concerned that she may have fallen down, may have hidden her head.
He goes to the door, opens it.
She meets him there, she says he's hidden ahead. He goes to the door, opens it, she meets him there, she says he's
okay. She not only gestures to him to come towards my bed, I believe she puts her hand
on his arm and kind of tugs him in that direction. He now doesn't know what to do. He knows
he's got to get out of there. He just can't take it. He has to get out of the bedroom in his mind.
He does get out of the bedroom.
He says, no, stop.
He gets out of the bedroom and he sits out
in that coach for any amount of hours from there on.
Here is Adrian's recollection of the evening.
So September 2012, OK.
The day is 9th, it second year of the year, she
imbibed her house while her wife was away and then she proceeded to
fall in love with herself and then try to make physical contact on me
and pull me to her bedroom, tell me let's do it, which is no accurate. You know, this here that has other
this sexual air force.
Good.
And then I was in a frozen state at that time.
And it's crazy not here right now, really,
but I was horribly shaking at that point.
Assuming it occurred at all, this appears
to be the extent of the incident.
Adrian and Lisa were drinking and she came onto him.
He made it clear that her sexual advances were unwelcome and spent the night sleeping
on her couch.
That was it.
But for Adrian, a line had been crossed and there was no going back.
This night was the triggering event of a catalyst, the genesis of this entire case.
In his mind, he was sexually assaulted by her.
He was raped.
But even according to Adrian's own account, he was never physically assaulted. The reality of what happened wasn't important to Adrian.
He felt violated.
And that's all that mattered.
And that's when things really started spinning out
of control from there on.
It boiled up in him to a point of sometime later,
say about a month where he just couldn't take it
as this incident.
Again to you and I, we could brush it off,
forget about it, he couldn't.
He ends up writing, I think it was a 26 page letter to her
Saying what she had done to him and she has never apologized that it's eating away at him
What did you say in your letter to her?
My face just detailed from what we met to
How up some downs a bit to
the night of her house
How I came out of it the other ups and downs after that,
where I was at the point my ropper was. I was kind of happy and kind of friends at the
point. When you wrote the letter to her, so you write the letter, she gets it in what happens
then. She first really happened when she was reading it, gap's kind of teary-eyed, this
gap very bad, and then it just got very dismissive.
And then we didn't speak for a month.
He then, the true act of sabotage, he sends this 26-page letter, he had originally given
to Lisa to Anna, and and boy does the stuff hit the
storm do or then. So now the relationship totally blows up.
I told her wife too, like, said a cup of the letter saying, you know, here's what your
wife did. I was also saying this up here, why I don't want you to never hear this.
I'm assuming it took it a lot of while I was. Adrian continued to build this incident up in his mind, playing it over and over until
it clouded out everything else.
Adrian have to take this, again this, this festering cancer and I'm of what how he had been
raped that night.
He has to take it a step further and he does so by, by contacting the Coast Guard.
He just felt compelled and
overwhelmed that he had to bring it to their attention how he was attacked on this
particular night, how this happened, they must or somebody must know the truth."
When the Coast Guard looked into the incident, they found both parties to be at fault. On June
21, 2013, Adrian's commanding officer wrote the following in his report
on the incident. You exploited your position as a senior member of the division to increase
contact with Lisa Trebnekova and communicated unsolicited amorous feelings. Your behavior
affected your entire division, causing individual angst and decreased productivity. Adrian was
relocated to a base near Chesapeake, Virginia.
Lisa and Anna were sent to Cape Cod, Massachusetts.
They were instructed to notify the Coast Guard if Adrian ever attempted to get in contact
with them again.
For nearly two years, they didn't see or hear from them at all.
They thought he was out of their lives for good, and they put him out of their minds.
But throughout those years, Adrian never stopped thinking about Lisa.
This perpetual victim grew more and more resentful.
After leaving Alaska, Adrian was thrown into a deep depression.
He no longer had a will to live, but he didn't
just want to die anymore, you know,
the whole thought was, because this woman, Alice Pond, I wanted a career future.
Okay, since then I lost all, you know, a little house stuff.
Okay.
You know, I've played her for all of this.
Right. I'm playing her for all of us. And instead of me taking myself out, my bedroom or something, I want to show her what she
created and then basically enter.
Adrian wanted retribution for the perceived evil that had been inflicted upon him. That's what drove him, that he was going to write a wrong, and that wrong, that wrong, that evil that was perpetrated under him, was not, was not going to be brought upon to somebody else.
He was going to see that evil is going to end. Adrian said about planning the murder of Lisa Trubnikova, a final battle between his
notion of good and evil.
He wanted the world to know what motivated him. It's a very personal, active event.
Between late 2013 and early 2015, Adrian dedicated himself to writing an explanation for what
he was planning to do.
For inspiration, he turned to the Star Wars franchise.
Yes, that's right.
You heard that correctly.
What is Star Wars about?
Good versus evil
you know dark leader in the dark side against uh... against the force
being the forces of good
that's good within each and every individual in each and every one of us
first the force forces of evil which is going to conquer
and and so that's those of the threads which tied in a
his victimization and tied into the very
Star Wars theme.
Inspired by George Lucas' Star Wars, Adrian's work culminated in a 250 page document titled
Loyal Wars.
The subtitle read a little while ago on an island far far away.
I'm not shitting you.
That's literally what he called it.
I don't know whether you'd call this a diary,
a manifesto, or a bunch of crazy ramblings,
but whatever it is provides a disturbing glimpse
into the thought process behind this deadly attack.
The following excerpts were all taken from the pages of loyal wars.
Episode 30.
The last indomitable sexual assault.
They call me loya.
I have experienced a weird trauma that forever changed me for the worst.
I am an extremely quiet guy who keeps to himself, generally very friendly when approached,
and I have your typical geeky interests.
I have also diagnosed myself as having skitsoid personality disorder.
I have very much been a loner my whole life who never really sought out people.
Although I wouldn't consider myself anti-social, just not desiring a need for others in order
for me to feel alright. It's maybe because of this personality of mine that what many would
have considered a trivial awkward everyday life event was actually way more destructive
on me than it should have been. Okay, I need to state immediately that I wasn't physically raped, nor did I rape anyone.
My body was not forcefully sexually penetrated, nor was I forced to sexually penetrate another
person against my will.
All that happened is that a tiny drunk Hispanic gay married woman, known as Lisa, whom I
trusted, had invited me over to her place to
hang out, but then dragged me to her bed for some sex that never happened.
What actually did happen was that something in my mind was destroyed that night.
The Bad Night, September 9, 2012.
The feeling was amazing.
It was 1.30am on a Sunday and I felt so alive as I got ready and left to Lisa's house.
It was the feeling of being wanted by somebody.
That there was a person out there who wanted me to be with them.
Somebody who wanted my company.
Lisa Berlango wanted Adrian Loya with her to have some late night fun.
I was the happiest I had ever been in my entire life because somebody wanted me in their life,
and it was a person I also wanted in my life. I had wanted Lisa to be my best friend in Kodiak,
and this felt like the first true step to that. Every detail encompassing this night at least is burned into my mind with complete vividness.
Fear.
Fear.
Pure fear.
The intense feeling knowing that from this moment on that something very bad is going to happen
to you and there is nothing you can do about it.
Now if you are like the others, you are probably thinking I must actually fear all females,
which must have started in childhood. Wrong, but sort of correct.
The immediate aftermath, the rest of September 9th, 2012.
Now back to the main story. I go to check the phone with cautious excitement when I see that it is Lisa replying back, but
then my heart drops.
Her message reads, Hey, sorry for how drunk I was last night.
If we could never speak about it again, that would be perfect.
Things raced through my mind as it tries to decipher the words.
What is she actually saying with this text and how is she feeling about it when she texted
it?
The Unknown, the rest of September 2012.
It was the first day, the first for many things to start.
The first day back in the office after a week off to recharge from a very bad month.
The first full week of being back to normal with Lisa,
sort of. The first day I began having my body betray me. The first day of never feeling
safe. The first day when my mind started down a dark lonely path.
The calm before the apocalypse, December 2012.
You might recall how December 2012 was supposed to be the end of the world because of my
and prophecy.
Well, of course it didn't happen because that would be incredibly silly, but maybe it
did end?
Maybe my world ended that year and I had been sent into whatever hell there is with no
fanfare.
I do not know.
The Letter February 2013
So that weekend I came into the office to print out the 20-page letter I had written
to Lisa. I have a little fun with it by calling it the Lisa Effect Report and dress it up
as a super top secret military document. As I am putting it into a folder, I think about the consequences that are sure to happen
once Lisa reads the letter.
One thing that stuck in my head, and from what I have found out about Lisa, is that she
will probably never show this to Anna.
Then I decide to send a digital copy of the letter to Anna's email.
I did this because I felt that due to all the heavy stuff that I put into the letter
that it would be very wrong if Anna knew nothing of what I was telling her wife Lisa. The letter
read like some kind of Edgar Allen post story where it goes from innocent to complete horror.
Hey, I love my dreams. I live for my dreams. But then Lisa started appearing in them and I no longer wished to dream.
I hate that my dreams have been taken away. I hate Lisa Berlanga. As the rest of 2003 marched on for me in Chesapeake, I slowly began losing it.
Please don't take what I'm about to say as ammo to discredit me or something by what has really happened to me.
So since I was very little, I have had a very powerful imagination.
I would play pretend outside or inside the house by acting out the fantasy worlds I live
in.
I was someone's son on board a starfleet vessel, or I was the son of an ex-wing pilot,
or was having Batman teach me to take over for him, or was being groomed to be the next Ghostbuster.
Then there was also my version of the Star Wars universe.
Since about 1998, I have had an incredibly immersive and detailed life of me adventuring
in the Scalixie far, far away.
It was Adrian Loyal whisked away from his home planet of Earth, to then be taken to the
Scalixie to be trained as a Jedi by Luke Skywalker himself. For 15 years, I would daydream my continuing adventures
of this galaxy whenever I had a dull moment in the real world. I of course knew it was all
in my imagination, but with such a vast history I stole and modified for my own use. They
became my memories in a way. That is until I got to Chesapeake. It started becoming
very, very hard to stay in my imagination, and it wasn't because I was entering my 30s.
Any time I tried to dive back into my imagination, I would be pulled out with thoughts of hating Lisa
and what has happened to me. I became obsessed with her and I hated it. I had developed a monomania
for Lisa. Just look at all this shit I wrote.
I hate what she has turned me into.
I hate that I now hate and cannot rid myself of it.
I hate Lisa Berlanga, and I want her to pay for it.
The decision.
Making the choice when I didn't want to play anymore.
I was done. I no longer wanted to play anymore. I was done.
I no longer wanted to play the game anymore.
It wasn't fun.
All the game masters suck.
All the players cheated.
All the rules were unfair.
I no longer wanted to play and I wanted out.
The decision, though, was not just to leave the coast card,
but also life itself.
Then I decided that if I was going to leave this life,
I would not allow Lisa to be allowed to remain.
I had to get revenge. I wanted revenge. I hate Lisa Berlanga and I will have my revenge upon her.
The hunt for revenge, planning for the Great Battle.
Planning for the Great Battle.
I wanted to deny Lisa happiness. I wanted to deny her seeing the day when gay marriage is made legal through the country.
Deny her the chance to see the first Hispanic or female United States President.
Deny her the career she was in.
Deny her the wonderful moments of life.
Deny her the chance to grow old together with Anna.
Deny her the love from Anna. Deny her the chance to grow old together with Anna. Deny her the love from Anna. Deny her the
sense of safety. I wanted to deny her everything, and denoing so strike fear into her as the last
sensation she would ever have. My 30th birthday arrived on February 5th, 2014. My enlistment ends
on March 8th, 2015, so it was decided. I will begin the process for leaving the Coast Guard and go out on my 31st birthday.
I had taken up the emblem of the Rebel Alliance from Star Wars as my personal symbol in fighting
back.
I will fight fire with fire because no one else will.
But maybe, just maybe.
I will help light the fires of rebellion.
That's it! The girls are there. Lawyer prepare yourself for a surface attack.
As summer 2014 moved on,
I already had a pretty good general idea of what I wanted to do,
but I still did not know where Lisa actually was.
Well, it turns out it's really simple, and for like $15 you can get a report on anyone
that has their address, previous addresses, felony records, and so on. When the location
popped up on the map, I was almost ecstatic. I have played numerous strategy and tower defense
games during my video game career, so when I saw the layout of where Lisa allegedly lived,
I saw right away that it was tactically perfect. I immediately
saw that if all you did was place an obstacle on the southern road, then first responders
would have a hell of a time getting in there quickly, thus giving me ample time for the
mission.
Operation Purple Rebel My final battle and the first battle against fear and power.
If it's not who you are underneath, it's what you do that defines you. That quote is from Batman Begins. In many ways that quote holds true for everybody and everything. It's going to be
incredibly true for me since I will only be seen as an evil man who murdered an unarmed girl
and then wildly attacked the police officers who came to save her.
And that's okay.
It's a totally reasonable way of seeing me or anyone for that matter when they do that.
Everything that I am inside will not matter and will never be used to judge me.
Lisa, on the other hand, will not be held to this standard though and I hate her for it.
But I will know what she did.
I will know what she was capable of.
And it will be for me that I do this, and I will
die knowing that I did the right thing.
Thus, Operation Purple Rebel will be put into action.
Essentially, the mission is a basic assassination mission.
Confront Lisa, anyway I can, in terminate her.
Since last April, I had various different plans, where they started off very extravagant
to extremely simple to more theatrical.
Main thing was just to make sure Lisa knows that it is I taking her life and why everything
else is secondary.
This should be very interesting how it actually plays out.
I am excited.
Well, this has become very long indeed.
250 pages and I still type horribly after all this practice.
It's just that every time you see the news about a deadly tragedy, it's always either considered
senseless or people never find out why the killer did what he did.
But here is everything for the reasons I did this.
You or someone else may consider them bad reasons, but that's you, not me.
All in all, this was my world, and my life that was destroyed by Alisa.
Bye. To be very clear, we did not include excerpts of loyal wars to help you make sense of Adrian's reasoning.
We included them to do the opposite, to show that there was absolutely no reason for
what he was planning to do, to show that there was no semblance of logic behind this absurd
and rambling explanation by a complete loser, a complete waste of human flesh.
In October of 2014, Adrian put Operation Purple Rebel into action by carrying out a reconnaissance
mission, driving roughly 10 hours from his home in Chesapeake, Virginia to born Massachusetts.
To make sure he had the correct address,
Adrian placed a hunting camera across the street
from the Trebna Covia's condominium on Roundhouse Road.
The next day, he went back and retrieved the camera
to check the footage.
What did the video from the camera reveal to you?
Just like me and I, I just showed him that.
What did you actually see on the camera before you
took the picture? He was an ad. He was going from the photo. Adrian also recorded himself driving around and casing the Trumnikovas neighborhood,
with nothing less than the Imperial March from Star Wars playing loudly over his
car speakers in the background. Then while driving back to Virginia, Adrian started
having a panic attack. On his trip back in that October, he it's kind of
interesting because it gets video recorded. He does it on his phone. He has this anxiety
breakdown in the vehicle at a in a cornfield in Pennsylvania we actually
can't control his hands and he has to pull a car over and get out of the car with his type of ventilating.
I'm trying to touch it out and keep it like this. My hands are over.
I do that very often. I'm just saying, so, so, so, so, so, so, so, so, so, so, so, so, so, so, so, so, so, so, so, so, so, so, so, so, so, so, so, so, so, so, so, so, so, so, so, so, so, so, so, so, so, so, so, so, so, so, so, so, so, so, so, so, so, so, so, so, so, so, so, so, so, so, so, so, so, so, so, so, so, so, so, so, so, so, so, so, so, so, so, so, so, so, so, so, so, so, so, so, so, so, so, so, so, so, so, so, so, so, so, so, so, so, so, so, so, so, so, so, so, so, so, so, so, so, so, so, so, so, so, so, so, so, so, so, so, so, so, so, so, so, so, so, so, so, so, so, so, so, so, so, so, so, so, so, so, so, so, so, so, so, so, so, so, so, so, so, so, so, so, so, so, so, so, so, so, so, so, so, so, so, so, so, so, so, so, so, so, so, so, so, so, so, so, so, so, so, so, so, so, so, so, so, so, so, so, so, so, so, so, so, so, so, so, so, so, so, so, so, so, so, so, so, so, so,, I'm recording in case anything ever happens,
people will know, and I can include it in the operation.
Apparently, he's filming this panic attack to provide evidence of Lisa's impact in his
life.
After rambling on a bit more about the quote-unquote operation,
Adrian mentions that the rebel pathfinder from Star Wars is his new symbol, and he begins to calm down.
He once again explains that he's recording himself for the purpose of keeping records. He walks around a little more, talking about his mission, because the wind makes it difficult
to hear what he's saying here is the transcript. You know, I started thinking about it.
You know, this is incredibly crazy, what I've been planning to do.
You know, it's fucking crazy that I want to conduct a mission to go murder a girl and,
you know, then die.
It's not exactly the healthiest thoughts.
He then begins to talk about his self-diagnosed mental issues,
stating that he is 99% sure he suffers from
skit-soid personality disorder, but that he never sought out help in the past because he feared
being discharged from the military. heading to the car so yeah,
this is for myself. This is for the investigators. No more secrets like this. Thank you for listening.
After returning to Virginia, Adrian made his final preparations. He put in for leave from the
Coast Guard and because he was planning to die immediately after the attack, donated some of his prized possessions to a video game website called Giant Bomb.
The Giant Bomb employees filmed themselves opening the box
as part of a mailbag video series they featured on their website.
Oh boy.
Okay.
Oh god, what is all this?
It's your P.F.
Manacing in a costume?
Oh my god.
Oh my god.
Are you sick?
Jesus. Oh my god. Are you sick?
Jesus.
Oh my god.
I just realized what that was.
Oh shit.
Dura, this is a hell of a thing.
That's a sweatshirt.
That's pretty cool.
That is an amazing sweatshirt.
Brad would have lost his mind, but he is sick today or something.
Ah, Dan, I'm gonna give you this bag.
Oh lord. This is fucking cool.
They pull out a Star Trek sweatshirt,
a bunch of action figures, and a few other items.
Based on their reactions, I'm guessing these items
were pretty valuable.
Six Star Wars hat?
Nice.
That, I feel like these things shouldn't go together.
10, 10, see 17 and something.
What happened?
Oh, great box, it's a sword.
Someone get married and then have to get rid of a bunch
of stuff fast.
I don't know what to do.
At the bottom of the box, they find a tactical jacket,
an airsoft pistol, and an airsoft rifle.
They also find a letter with a Star Wars rebel logo
on the front page. Tim, all guns are always loaded.
It's true.
Never let the muzzle cover anything you are not willing to destroy it, absolutely.
Keep your finger off the trigger until your sights are on the target, huh?
Be sure of your target and what is beyond it.
Be aware of the audience around you and how easily they can freak out.
Hi Johnny Bomb, just in case you were already freaking out yourselves, I have not sent you an actual gun.
But I have sent you as an airsoft rifle.
Yes, those are rifles, there it is. I don't think so. I think you just...
Yeah. And you're to go with it. I mean, there's a bunch of magazines in the front of that thing.
That's true, that must go to a rifle.
Maybe, and well, maybe, I don't know that one here.
But, bah, that's a long one.
Much love and beef, Adrian,
aka hyper aqua blast on the internet
and purple rebel in the field of battle.
Thank you, Adrian, commented on the video
writing,
I can't use the airsoft stuff anymore and rather than give it to some kid at the field
I used to play at I hope that giant bomb would use it on a short film or something like the roller coaster one
Glad they seem to enjoy it
As his 31st birthday drew closer Adrian decided to set up a few surprises around his house
He doesn't take anything from his condominium
around his house. He doesn't take anything from his condominium,
but he does somewhat booby trap it
by spreading gun oil and lubricant on the stairs
and on the banisters going up the stairs,
not necessarily to hurt any of the responders.
He knew that they'd be responding there.
He'd be dead, remember that.
But it was more of a, you know, laugh, laugh, tongue,
and cheek in his, you know, laughed out mind that that was some kind of, that was funny."
In addition to covering his floors and railings in gun oil, he propped up life-size cutouts
of Star Wars characters all around the house to startle investigators. He also rigged up the attic doors so that a toy spider on a string would drop down when
it was opened.
After staging his home, he drove up to Cape Cod and checked into room 101 of the quality
in and born Massachusetts.
The day before the attack, Adrian contacted a few people who were still in his life to
tell them not to reach out to him on his birthday.
He also took laxatives so that his dead body
would not end up covered in feces.
He spends a day at that particular hotel.
He then sets out to go about his short.
He's got all of the different weapons within.
He's got his uniform where he's got all of the different weapons within. He's got his uniform, where he's got the knee pads,
and he's got the mask, and he's got the nine millimeter,
the assault rifle, he's got the 22,
and he's got the shotgun to breach the door.
Instead of going straight to the Trebnikovas condo,
Adrian took time to set up a series of obstacles
to delay emergency responders.
The first of these obstacles was his car, which he parked sideways across Roundhouse Road,
the Kondo's only point of access. Adrian also set up a series of fake bombs. Household I love charcoal, the car, and not two players.
Adrian also set up a series of fake bombs.
Household items he'd rigged up to look like explosives,
including a stereo system with flashbang grenades attached to it,
and two litter coke bottles taped together.
There's two coke bottles, two coke bottles.
Two litter bottles, two liters of ice.
Yup, one was full of stittles, one for the laminams.
Okay.
And Brad Pahn, it was a power supply for an open computer at why was that?
I did that time.
Once he had set up these obstacles, Adrian headed towards the condo.
So how did you get in?
You say you breached the door, right?
How did you breach the door?
Shacken. How say you breach the door right how did you breach the door okay how did you breach it I placed the shotgun between the lock or you have
lock and the frame and you do that one okay so you pull the trigger on the
shotgun and bluesy lock your mechanism on the door or pipe and then the door
opened well the door shut to a lock much much time to go to the lock. OK.
And then this goes up.
OK, so you were able to get into the apartment.
After bursting into Anna and Lisa's bedroom,
Adrian eventually removed the mask.
He wanted these women to know who he was and why he was there.
He said, actually shortly after he took the mask off, he said, and she kind of shouted
his name, and he's like, see what you've done to me.
You're making me do this.
This is what I've become type of because of you.
At some point, Adrian exited the room for a moment, leaving Anna and Lisa a few seconds
to try to find something, anything to shield themselves.
They pulled the mattress off the bed and Adrian rushed back into the room.
He was standing over us pretty close.
I heard one shot out of the rifle.
I don't remember seeing it, but I remember hearing it.
But that was it, and I thought maybe it's a warning shot.
Maybe seconds afterwards, there were more shots.
I knew they weren't at me.
I didn't feel it yet. The sound also went to my left.
And at some point there were more shots and then I finally felt getting shot myself.
Using his pistol, Adrian fired a full magazine of 15 bullets into the mattress.
I figured we only have seconds after that to live.
I turned to Lisa and I said,
I love you to which she responded.
I love you too.
And we were very close.
She was facing me kind of and I just turned my head
towards her and I kissed her lips
and I remember the lips going numb or not numb, limp.
Lisa had been hit 11 times with bullets striking her legs,
shoulder, back, abdomen, and chest.
She died within seconds. I was laying there after I figured she died waiting to die.
Anna had been shot four times, suffering wounds to both arms, her thigh, and her chest, but she was still
conscious. And at some point, she heard a voice.
911, that's my record of what you're going to see.
Amidst the chaos, Lisa had managed to dial 911 and her reached out and grabbed the phone. Man. Or... Can you hear me? Or...
Who else is in the house with you?
I'm not in the house.
Yeah.
No one, just you?
Yeah.
And...
And lawyer, the one who shot you, where's he at?
I'm in the house.
I'm in the house.
You don't know?
Yeah.
How does...
What does he look like?
Or...
Or... What's that? Or... in black. You stressed all in black? Why are you digging
so long? We're on our way there, man. We're right down the street. There's a car fire
there. We're going to move the car the way to get to you. Caws had already been coming in from all over the neighborhood We got a fucking car fire. Okay. I saw him on the house road.
Yeah, okay.
Hang on, we'll tell you.
Fire department, don't hang up, okay?
I have a one-slime recorder with emergency.
It's a boring mess, it's here, is it?
Yeah, what's a problem?
Okay, I'm 12-hounds road.
I think I'm hearing like an explosion of something.
Yeah, the car fire rep is up the road.
Now I'm in one-slime recorder with emergency. I'm at the house road in Borm road. Now we're on this line in the court of Wresher, emergency.
On that health road in Bournemouth.
What's going on there?
Do you police fire?
We have a fire here.
There's already police officers on the scene.
Okay.
But up the road, I hear gunshots and lady screaming in those fireworks in the car.
I think they're using that as a distraction.
Emergency responders were running into all of the barriers Adrian had set up and of course there was one final obstacle waiting for them when they near the condo
Adrian himself
One of Anna's neighbors called 911 to report that a man dressed in black tactical gear and carrying firearms was hiding out on her deck
It's the guy still in your back your head
Yeah, he's on her deck.
Officer Jared McDonald was approaching Lisa's condo building when he heard gunfire. Right away the pain was immense.
I had a lack of use of my leg instantly, but I knew what it was, I knew what I had to
do.
So as soon as I hit the ground, I actually pulled myself backwards with my hands to get
to a safe place.
Officer McDonald realized he had been shot, and he would later find out that the bullet hit his lower back near his spine, striking his kidney and liver. All
of the officers on scene prepared for a shootout. But minutes later, Adrian stepped into
view, laid down his weapons and surrendered. Meanwhile, Anna was still on the line with 9-1-1.
By this point Anna had been on the line for over 45 minutes. She was unable to move and had no idea why it was taking so long for paramedics to reach
her.
I know, I know, I know, I know, there's a lot of things going on.
Whoever, whoever lawyer has he's been out, he's shot a police officer and he's got some other things around
that area. So they have to take the time and make sure everybody's safe going where
they're going. But they're coming to you.
After 56 excruciating minutes, help finally arrived.
They got you Anna, right?
All right. Okay. Now the police in the room with you?
All right. Anna, right? 4. Okay. Now the police in the room with you?
4.
Anna was taken to the hospital.
Adrian was taken to the Bourne Police Department, where just after 4am, he was interrogated.
He wanted the officers to know up front that he was willing to tell them everything.
As long as you guys all know, I'm not the lying points. I'm going to tell all the truth.
OK.
So I'll go to point to point to point.
Yeah.
So I know I'm already a dead man and all this stuff.
Adrian tells them about the night of the attack
from his perspective.
It's basically a salted-day residence,
a female who's actually a salted man.
OK.
So you were sexually salted by someone? A library, yes. OK. And you went to that girl's me? Okay. And then I saw you sexually assaulted by someone?
Black or yes.
Okay. And you went to that girl's house?
Yes.
Okay. And when happened, what did you got there?
I told her why I was there, and then...
And what did you tell her?
I told her, you know, here I am, it's what you did to me.
Two years ago, I'm doing a break.
And outside of physical rape, it was the, you know, was the basic rig for lying from a sexual attack.
Because he had initially planned to commit suicide by cop, he had recorded the attack using
a GoPro camera, which investigators now had.
They also had a USB flash drive containing loyal wars.
Adrian let investigators know that there
were backup copies in his hotel room and at his home in Virginia. The US East Coast. There is a 25-page word documents
this detailed
everything up from my
person at Lisa to
my beside that I didn't want to
exist or
and not have her own.
When asked how he was
feeling about everything,
Adrian responded,
I didn't see the aftermath. I just know I took a life,
but it was a life I wanted to take. The job is done.
Following his interrogation, Adrian was arraigned on 30 charges,
including three counts of aggravated assault and battery, two counts of armed kidnapping
with serious bodily injury,
and one count of armed assault to murder. He went on trial in August of 2017 and pleaded
not guilty by reason of insanity. The prosecution and defense agreed on the basic facts of the
case that Adrian killed Lisa Trumnikova and shot both Anna Trumnikova and officer Jaren McDonald.
The question was whether or not Adrian was capable of recognizing the wrongfulness of those
actions at the time of the attack. Over the course of the trial, four different forensic experts
were called to the stand to answer this question, three by the prosecution and one by the defense.
question, three by the prosecution and one by the defense. All four of them agreed that Adrian suffered from some sort of mental illness or disorder. They all reached different
conclusions as to what the diagnosis should be. Ultimately, their conclusion as to whether
Adrian was capable of conforming his conduct to the requirements of the law was split.
To said he was?
To said he wasn't.
That's science for you.
The jury was not going to have an easy decision.
After closing arguments, while the judge was giving instructions to the jury, he called
the attorneys over for a quick sidebar. Let me see the attorneys at the side.
While the judge was distracted, Adrian turned to face the jury, made eye contact with
one of the jurors, and mailed the words, I'm guilty.
Imagine being a defense attorney, and finding out that your client just told the jury he was guilty. Imagine being a defense attorney and finding out that your client just told the jury he was guilty. Well, that's exactly the position in which Drew Segedelli found
himself. He argues, however, that this was a sign that Adrian was still in a delusional
state.
And where at Sidebar making sure everybody's happy with what happened and in my cell
of most of the jury, I'm guilty. I'm guilty. He was still out of it.
He wanted to make sure he wasn't going to be found, not guilty for something.
He was guilty of, because he wanted everybody to know, but that he was guilty, and why
he was guilty, why he did it, and all the reasons behind it.
So probably people could embrace the fact that he was violated, sexually attacked and assaulted by her,
even though in anyone's right mind,
that's the farthest thing from the truth.
What Adrian didn't realize was that this action
would be captured on camera and shown to the judge.
If there is any repeat conduct on your part,
like what I have observed, I will consider removing you from the trial process
and having you confined in the lockup watching further proceedings by video link. Do you understand
me, Mr. Loyal? Yes, Your Honor. Four days later, on Tuesday, September 12, 2017,
the jury delivered its verdict
after 14 hours of deliberation.
Let's say you met him, four ladies,
to indictment number,
2015 095 01,
where in the defendant, Adrian T. Loya,
is charged with murder.
Is he not guilty?
Not guilty lack of criminal responsibility.
Guilty first degree murder.
Guilty second degree murder or guilty manslaughter.
Guilty first degree murder.
Adrian was guilty of 29 of his 30 charges, with the single not guilty verdict pertaining
to a charge of armed assault with intent to murder Anna Trubnikova.
Although he does not dispute the legitimacy of this verdict, Drew Seideli still believes by reason of insanity. It was incumbent on me to show what happened to everybody.
I did that, I can sleep at night, I'm quite comfortable in what I did.
I, I, I, again, believe it's our, our cake, some of our laws and the way that judge had to instruct the jury on the judge to define job.
So I, I will look back somewhat, some chagrin at their verdict on comfortable and how the case
was tried.
And that's all I can say.
It's in the peel right now because it's the first to cremator.
So let's see how it comes out.
At Adrian Settencing, Anna reminded the court of everything Adrian took from her on February 5th, 2015, stating,
I still find myself struggling to overcome life without Lisa.
Without her easy approach to life's complexities, her infectious laugh, her witness, her immense
work ethic, her incredible ability to forgive and forget, to see the best in anything and anyone despite what life has thrown at her
and her radiant beauty inside and out. Anna's words should remind us that unlike Adrian
Loia, this story isn't detached from reality. It has had a real and lasting impact on innumerable lives. For Anna and many others, this story will
never be over. Anna finished her statement with a plea to the judge that Adrian remained
in a maximum security prison for the rest of his life. Judge Gary Nicherson then sentenced Adrian Loya to life in prison without the possibility of
parole. Well, that does it for this episode.
I hope you enjoyed it as much as I did.
And if you were paying attention there, you may have noticed a voice that you might be
familiar with.
Yes, that was comedian Chris D'Alea, who was gracious enough to provide his voice for
this episode.
Big thanks to him and you can go check him out at chrisd'Alea.com.
Until next time, don't turn to the dark side and stay safe. you
