Starting point is 00:02:02 2.0% 2.0% 2.0% How far would you go to help the person that you love most? If a situation called for it, would you be willing to risk a lifetime in prison for that person? Would you be willing to commit murder? More than likely there is someone, or maybe even a few people in your life, that you'd be willing to do just about anything, if it meant ending their sadness to stress or fear. Maybe it's your kids, your spouse, a sibling, or even your parents. If it was within your power, you'd probably be willing to sacrifice a great deal if it meant that you could help them during a desperate time of need.
Starting point is 00:03:00 Usually this kind of selflessness is commendable, and it's also a great way to show someone that you really care about them. Nothing says I love you quite like pure altruism, but there are some circumstances where a willingness to sacrifice for someone does mean more harm than good. Sometimes our good intentions mislead us, and sometimes our altruism can be so blind that no risk seems too great and no act too horrific. In July of 2015, 47-year-old Robert Noce Jr. was living in a trailer in Zachary Louisiana, which is only a short drive north of Baton Rouge. If you're not familiar, Baton Rouge sits on the Mississippi River. It is the capital of Louisiana and the second largest city in the state after New Orleans. While living on the outskirts of Baton Rouge, Robert Nose was having
Starting point is 00:04:19 issues with his lawnmower, and his older brother decided to help. On the morning of July 4th, Robert's brother loaded his own lawnmower onto a truck and planned to drop it off at Robert's home. I'm trying to get my brother's lawnmower. You can try to get it. I've finally got my lawnmower going to talk to him. So you call him? Yeah, I call you today. Because you're going to get the lawnmower.
Starting point is 00:04:44 Yeah, I tell him I'm Because you was going to get the lawn mower? Yeah, I told him. I'm ugly with the lawn mower. Oh, okay. You never ran. So I still went over there after you ran and anything. If he wasn't ran, I'll come drop it off. Okay. Okay.
Starting point is 00:04:54 When I get there, so I noticed water pouring from under his trailer. And I noticed he was just pouring out. When he arrived, Robert's brother found that Robert's trailer was flooded. Water was pouring from the base of the home and pooling in the yard. At first he thought the problem might have been caused by the recent rainstorm, but then he noticed a few other things on the property that kind of seemed out of place. I walked around the front of the trailer and I saw the air conditioning laying down right there. of things on the property that kind of seemed out of place. I walked around, those side, and I hit the door, and when I hit the door it came open. The robby was up, man!
Starting point is 00:05:50 He didn't know that I heard his water running. So when I got the kitchen, that's the first thing I saw. Safe was stopped up, water was gone. Lying in Robert's yard beneath an open window was an air conditioning unit, which looked like it had been pulled out and left on the ground for repair. Then after walking inside, Robert's brother also found that the kitchen sink had been purposely clogged with some kind of fabric. The faucet was left running at full blast, and water was spilling onto the floor. And then, after I cut off the water in the kitchen, I still had water.
Starting point is 00:06:28 So I went in front of that room where I saw the air conditioning. That's why I heard the water. So I went on the air and the tub was stopped up, where the blanket and it was water with water. Robert's brother found that every faucet in the home had been running on full blast, and every drain had been clogged with blankets or clothes. Clearly, someone had intentionally flooded Robert's home, and even more concerning, Robert was nowhere to be found. As Robert's brother was working to stop the running water in the trailer, he was also
Starting point is 00:07:25 talking to his other brother Brian on the phone, who claimed that he'd not seen or heard from Robert in a few days. He said, have you ever heard from Robbie? And I said, uh, number one. He said, I've been trying calling him. And he can't get in touch with him. And that's because it goes straight to boys. Robert Noes Jr. was born in December of 1967 and had two older brothers. According to those brothers, Robert was a regular churchgoer and would usually spend his Sundays with his and eat with the family.
Starting point is 00:08:26 According to his brother Brian, although Robert frequently made time to see his family, he was usually pretty closed off, kept to himself and wasn't the type of guy who would ask for help even if he was, it had to be cool around. Robbie was real to himself. If I can't pick him up, Robbie would be really, if he needs him, he'll find a reason to let me know. You know, if I need to tell me you need someone or something like that, he would. Was there anyone that sends out your mind in particular that was making any sort of threats for them? Maybe made a threat to harm your brother.
Starting point is 00:09:05 It's not big of a... No, no. I don't recall him telling me anything like that. In addition to being the youngest of three brothers, Robert Nose was also a father. Several years before his trailer was flooded, Robert began dating a woman he had known since childhood. Her name was Margaret Dixon, and the two of them had a daughter
Starting point is 00:09:29 But Margaret also had another daughter from a previous relationship When I guess you were in in Roberts like having you know when y'all kind of timeline when y'all started dating kind of just I've been known Robert all my life Okay He's a lifetime family friend. How long did y'all date? Two years. And that's in Robert. At that point when you all separated Robert had both of those girls, right?
Starting point is 00:09:58 Yes. Brittany and Camden. Yes. We had a... Nothing was written down or anything. We didn't have anything. he didn't sign anything. We just pretty much promised each other. He promised me that he would take care of her until I got on my feet. After Robert and Margaret decided to break up,
Starting point is 00:10:19 Robert agreed to look after both girls until Margaret could get her life in order. The process ended up taking a while, over five years actually. But eventually both girls moved out of Robert's trailer and went to go live with their mother. Fast forward a few more years to July of 2015, and one of Robert's brothers had discovered that Robert was missing. His home was flooded and his air conditioner had been pulled from the window and left in the yard. But that wasn't all that Robert's brother found. After walking through the trailer, he also noticed something much more ominous.
Starting point is 00:11:04 much more ominous. Blood. I thought I might have saw some where the blanket folded down. I thought I was talking. And bloods there. After finding random droplets and streaks of blood in Robert's bedroom, his brother decided to call 911. When the police arrived, one theory they floated was that an angry ex-girlfriend may have flooded the trailer. Maybe this was some kind of revenge by a jilted lover.
Starting point is 00:11:48 Because what did that first guy say? Well, I've got like a woman thing. Well, that's the way I have a point, Dan. But why is he missing? Why is he not here? As they speculated on what may have happened, there was something that Robert's brother and the police had yet to realize. Technically, Robert wasn't missing.
Starting point is 00:12:10 He was in the trailer, but he hasn't made wine. You know, a while, a couple of years, he had those containers really, I'd never even knew if he had anything in him or not. He just had stuff stack on top of him, like they would just be some furniture. Throughout Robert's home and placed around his yard were several 55-gallon plastic barrels that Robert had previously used to make his own wine.
Starting point is 00:12:47 In an attempt to find any clues as to what may have happened to Robert, one of the responding police officers decided to open a barrel in Robert's kitchen. Inside, they found a bloody and lifeless body. Upside down, a bloody and lifeless body. Upside down, wearing only sleeping shorts and curled into a fetal position, Robert Nose had been stuffed into his own barrel. His hands were bound behind his back, and a thick leather belt was wrapped tightly around his neck. Suddenly, this missing person investigation had changed into a homicide. Almost as quickly as they found the body, the police also identified the killer. And when questioned, that person would tell them all they needed to know. The murder itself really wasn't all that complicated.
Starting point is 00:13:46 The motive, however, was a different story. And what at first seemed like a straight forward homicide investigation eventually became a highly debated courtroom battle about vigilante justice. On July 4, 2015, in a small neighborhood in the outskirts of Baton Rouge, Louisiana, the bloody and lifeless body of 47-year-old Robert Nost Jr. was found stuffed in a 55-gallon barrel inside his own kitchen. Nectis were used to bound Robert Hans behind his back, and a thick leather belt was wrapped around his neck. When an autopsy was performed, the medical examiner found that Robert had been stabbed
Starting point is 00:14:56 14 times, mostly in the back of his neck. Nothing had been stolen from the home, and the murder was brutal. For police, it was obvious that someone had it out for Robert. Someone wanted revenge. Based on what was found at the crime scene, it appeared that, on the night before the body was found, the murderer had removed an air conditioner from the window and Robert's spare bedroom. Then he climbed through the window to gain access to Robert's home. Once inside, they likely found Robert asleep in his bed and attacked him.
Starting point is 00:15:41 During the investigation, the detectives also learned that before his death, Robert had a pet goat that had recently and mysteriously died. weeks ago, Keith got shot. Yeah, we're robbing him till Keith got shot. You know. Keith knows was Robert's nephew, but more importantly he was also Robert's roommate. They lived together and the two of them knew each other pretty well. I've been there since right before last maybe. March 8th, last month. Yes, sir. We're pretty close. I was there, and I could tell you something was not. The way he told me, my goat's dead, I was there to go die. Were you there the day the goat died?
Starting point is 00:16:38 The day he told me my goat's dead, I had somebody to kill them, or something. Maybe Paul now. Yeah, I thought, the way he explained it was the goat Although they were roommates, Keith split his time living at Robert's trailer and living in his parents' house, which is why Keith wasn't home when Robert was murdered. In fact, Keith hadn't been at Robert's trailer for well over a week. It starts with the past, it starts with you being golfed about two weeks, almost two weeks, yeah. So, you know, my thinking is if somebody was waiting on me to not be there, they would go to the top of the time.
Starting point is 00:17:29 Now, that was my room, but they supposedly pulled the air conditioning out of. Yeah. I had this little, like a, tupperware drawer. If they come in, and that's where I had my lawnfucking off, if they come in that window, they would have crushed it. They would have messed that up, or removed it out the way or something. And I don't see them coming in there in the air conditioner and they're not here in that.
Starting point is 00:17:51 I think that something tells me that they did all that after fact. But I think it's something that I think is somebody he let in that house. For Keith, it didn't seem likely that Robert would have slept through a break in. And he suspected that the air conditioner was staged to make the crime appear like a random home invasion. In other words, Keith believed that the killer wasn't a stranger, and that Robert had likely
Starting point is 00:18:16 let them into his home. Recently, however, Robert had not been very social. Outside of his immediate family, the only person he was spending time with was his semi-girlfriend, who Keith only knew as Michelle. I don't remember when you kind of died in a farm, but I was like, you know, she's just got me out of time. She gets too serious, too fat. That's what we were telling me. According to Keith, Robert wasn't as interested in Michelle as she was in him. Naturally, after learning about Michelle, the police asked her to come in for questioning, and she agreed. And you've got to kind of been in a culture of friendship for how since probably since Margaret Margaret was fed where did this you weren't that bad?
Starting point is 00:19:14 So I don't know if you would carry around. We never had my official talk about what he was. He was the last time you saw? The last time it was Wednesday before last time. Wednesday was so about a week ago? Did he tell you about anybody that had problems? No matter. Other than stuff about the trial or whatever that was coming up. There's one more important thing that you should know about the victim in this case.
Starting point is 00:19:49 Robert Nostr junior was a registered sex offender. If you remember several years before his murder, Robert was in a two-year relationship with a woman named Margaret Dixon and the two of them had a daughter. But Margaret also had another daughter from a previous relationship. Her name was Brittany, and even though he never married her mother, Robert considered Brittany to be a stepdaughter. After Robert and Margaret decided to split up, Robert agreed to take care of both girls until Margaret could get her life in order.
Starting point is 00:20:26 The girls ended up living with Robert for over five years, but eventually they reunited with their mother and went to go live with her. A few years later, Brittany claimed that during this time that she lived with them, Robert had repeatedly raped her. Obviously there was an issue where your brother was accused of some sort of rape or some of the effect involving his stepdaughter. You know what he was, what he was the accident was? We don't know. Okay, it's ridiculous. So it was saying that he was when she was like from two years of three years to seven years old that he ain't only right. And there's no evidence of all the sudden when she was 15 years old, she remembered this. Right. After she'd been living with her mother.
Starting point is 00:21:27 When Brittany's allegations came out, Robert was swiftly arrested and ultimately charged with felony carnal knowledge of a juvenile. He pleaded Nolo Contenderay or no contest. In Louisiana, this plea isn't necessarily an admission of guilt, but when a court accepts this plea, the defendant faces the same penalties as someone who had pleaded guilty. The only difference is that a no-contest plea cannot be used against a defendant in later
Starting point is 00:21:59 court cases. As for Robert, after he pleaded no contest, he was sentenced to ten years in prison, but the sentence was suspended, which meant no prison time. How many times have we heard about this? Petaphiles being let out with a slap on the wrist. Robert was placed on probation for five years and was required to register as a sex offender. Twelve days later he was murdered, and if anyone had a motive for revenge, it was Brittany. Her rapist was walking the streets. He spent no time behind bars and was living free as a bird. You know, part from the whole stay away from schools
Starting point is 00:22:52 and parks thing. It's a bridge, right? It's a bridge. Bro, you get back to you. You get any idea why you feel right. I mean, I was like when your car was like, When the police brought in 17-year-old Brittany Monk for questioning, the news of Robert's murder had not yet been widely known.
Starting point is 00:23:32 And when detectives told her about it, her expressions seemed to be genuine shock. At the same time, Brittany was seven months pregnant. Not only did she seem unaware of what happened, but she also didn't come across as someone who was capable of committing murder. Much less physically capable of stabbing and strangling a 47-year-old man to death. Even so, the police pressed her, and they seemed to believe that she knew something about what happened. There's only closer because it's a very important.
Starting point is 00:24:07 If you know anything, anything, for your sake, and your child's here, I need to know how to come out. The only thing is, I know that he got the right, she need that hobby, which is not a deal.
Starting point is 00:24:25 So I'm sure that it's pretty upset. When you say a robot, who? Well, that's not a food robot. It was like my help all and then my daddy. And then I didn't actually like talk to my mom about this particular situation. Did you do that? You mean you buy a lot? I don't.
Starting point is 00:24:42 I don't know. I thought I should go to college today. OK. It's pretty good to join us. You're not a step down. You're not much of a step down. It's suspiciously. Brittany claimed that she hadn't talked much about the lenient punishment that Robert received for raping her. She suggested that it was more of a passing conversation among her family, which wasn't at all what the police had already been told. But we know people were upset about the outcome of that. which wasn't at all what the police had already been told. after the outcome of that and you know that you have to tell us that because once we
Starting point is 00:25:27 capture them and they tell us that then looks a good for you. You're 17, you get a long life ahead of me. We find out on the backside that you do whatsoever about When asked about who she spoke into about Robert's conviction and the disappointing sentence that followed, Brittany mentioned her grandfather, her new stepfather, her mother, and her half sister. Noticably absent from the list was Brittany's boyfriend, who was also the father of her unborn child. He was 21-year-old, Jace Creeham. What kind of situation would you say about this? My parents talked about this.
Starting point is 00:26:22 I mean, when we talked about a misconception. We talked about, you know, that people were aggravated and what he got away with it. Who is Jason's first to you? What he did, didn't think that he would even get, you know, getting trouble, because there really was no, it was too kind of rape. There was no, It was too kind of great. It was no. There's a blabinant so it was just my testimony against it. So he was like, I know the law, you're not. He was the air governor. He was the thing that he was worried about was me going up there and
Starting point is 00:27:00 getting let down. According to Brittany, her boyfriend, Jace, didn't have much stake in the outcome of Robert's criminal case. Given that there was no physical evidence, he believed that Robert would probably walk free. And at the same time, Jace didn't really know Robert. The two of them had never even been in the same room together. He didn't mention any altercation between himself and Robert. I don't. As far as I know, he has never talked to him and doesn't know he knows what he looks like and nothing like that. We found out that you know, or you all had this conversation, you're going to have problems.
Starting point is 00:27:42 Right. I don't want you, you don't need to be put in that position. Right. You're in a good position like that. Because I know he wasn't there. Do you think, when we go talk to him, he's going to say the same thing, he's just saying, and he knows something? So, what I feel that he felt, I don't really don't think that he was aggravated. I mean, I think that he was... You think he would do something like that? Like killing somebody. After speaking with Brittany, the detectives also interviewed her boyfriend, Jason Creehan.
Starting point is 00:28:30 And when they did, Jason did something that we don't typically find here on Sword and Scale. I understand what our rights are and will and answer and make a statement, but I do not want to lower it at this time. I understand no what I'm doing, no promises, no threats, and no pressure, any pressure by the Council's been used against me. Going to that side, in front right there. My first question is about all consent. I mean, attain, I'm gonna arrest. You're not under arrest right now, I'm telling you that. I mean, attain. You mean question right now, you hear voluntarily.
Starting point is 00:28:59 Okay. So. He's not, man, he got mad on the arrest. He's not under arrest at that time. Someone figure. Yeah. It's very very rare. So, as unbelievable as it might seem, your ears did not just deceive you. A potential murder suspect just asked to speak with a lawyer before answering any questions. What a shock. Now, before you go ahead and commend Jace for doing the smart thing, let's not give him too much credit just yet. If you keep listening, I promise you that you won't
Starting point is 00:29:45 be admiring his intelligence for very long. After Jace refused to wave his rights and opted to get a lawyer first, the police don't have to know. I don't think. Okay. He's acting very strange. I mean, he had a lot of fun. I don't know. I don't know. I don't know.
Starting point is 00:30:14 He's acting very strange. I mean, he had a lot of fun. I don't know. I don't know. I don't know. I don't know. He's acting very strange. I mean, he had a lot of fun.
Starting point is 00:30:22 I don't know. I don't know. I don't know. I don't know. I don't know. I always have been ever since. I mean ever since. We met really. How long have you been to go? A year and some months. Brittany Monk and Jason Creehan met in 2013. And according to Jason, the story of how they ended up in a relationship was pretty typical for people their age. How do you have wanted me? How do you mean? Well, actually, I've met on Instagram first.
Starting point is 00:30:46 I almost said she was cute, so I was cute. So hey, she texted me. She said, okay. I have fun with her. Ah, modern romance. Nothing says, love story like a, hey, you're cute, message on Instagram. Whatever works, I guess. You'll notice that Jason summed up the start of this relationship with Brittany pretty
Starting point is 00:31:10 quickly. But things went as simple and drama-free as he claimed, at least not according to Brittany's mother. And how old was she when she back home? 15, I think. She told me that they had been seeing each other as friends for six months. This was before I found out he was coming through the window. He was caught in there having sex.
Starting point is 00:31:38 She was still in minor, and I called police on me with everything. Allegedly, Brittany's mom caught 19-year-old Jace in bed with her 15-year-old daughter. As far as first impressions go, Jace wasn't exactly off to a great start when it came to Brittany's family. But according to him, Jace was nothing but cordial to them. Despite the initial drama and, well, statutory rape, Brittany's mom was willing to give Jason a chance. She figured any attempt to keep them apart would probably not work. You know how teenage girls are. But after accepting
Starting point is 00:32:31 Jason as Brittany's boyfriend, she soon noticed that Brittany started to change. She was so graceful and just loving and she loved her sister and she loved her family. And then when she met him, everything just changed. The men and I saw him. There was just something about this guy that I did not like and I told everybody, especially her, I, you know, and forgive me if I could get upset, but nobody would ever listen to me. And I told her you need to calm. You need to slow down on this relationship. You're going
Starting point is 00:33:12 way too fast. Undeterred by her mom's warnings, Brittany continued dating Jace. And of course, before long, Brittany was pregnant. And she moved into an apartment with him. After Brittany and Jace got their own place, the man that allegedly raped her as a child, Robert Nose, pleaded no contest to the sexual assault charges against him. Given the nature of those charges, the judge handed down a pretty lenient punishment. Five years, probation, and no prison time. Way to go, judge. We'll add you to the list of really, really judge will add you to the list of really, really just to see judges. Just 12 days later, Robert Nose was found stabbed and strangled to death. His body stuffed in a 55-gallon barrel. And unlike Brittany, Jason Creehan was refusing to answer any of the police's questions about the
Starting point is 00:34:25 matter. to your not. You think he made everyone over there and got a fight with him? I just don't know how he would. I don't think you've got anything to hide. But I hope you don't know that somebody else does. All right. I just don't see him as just don't see it. I just can't I can't and I can't even imagine something like that. He was doing anything. I mean, he's just he's a family guy. I mean, he's just, he's a family guy. He's a hard-horn worker. You know? According to Brittany, it just didn't seem likely or even possible that Jace could have
Starting point is 00:35:13 killed Robert. Even so, the timing of the murder seemed a little too convenient. It seems very coincidental that this is having at the same time. So it's my thought that there's a guy with some of that probably stands out in your mind that may be the one that you see the connection. So when is all that to us Robbie? When I'm here with him and I'm also for pretty much so yeah, so I lived in was, I think, right for a turn to it. From what I, like from, from me, from no one in him, he's a very honorable guy, he's very arrogant. He could have other than a child, I don't know about, but I think...
Starting point is 00:35:56 After this interview with Brittany, the detective sent her and Jase home. But four days later, after a thorough processing of the crime scene evidence, the police returned to Jay's and Brittany and officially made an arrest. Why are you prosecuting her? I'm not prosecuting her. See it's like you. No?
Starting point is 00:36:17 You're arresting her for what? I don't agree with her. I don't even know. Does it mean she's charged with it? No. I'm gonna sit right now and we're talking to her. So it's not her arrest. She's not arrest. What's she charged with it. No, I'm just sitting right now, we're talking to her. So, it's not her. She's not around.
Starting point is 00:36:27 What's she charged with? What, what, I'm gonna let her, she can explain that to you. But right now, I can't involve anything. I know that. Is there something you need to talk to me about? Talk to me. I know what you're trying to do. No, no, you don't have to play the game.
Starting point is 00:36:41 Whatever, I'm gonna leave. There's a song about it, okay? I'll give you a listen. It's an all I know of you it. Whatever you're gonna be. This is something that I'll give you. Listen. It's an all I know for sure. I know. You know. Shit. Listen, you won't tell me.
Starting point is 00:36:56 Let me tell you, man. Look. Be a man. Be a man. I'll be a boy. I'll do whatever you need me to do. They'll help you. But you need to be a man right now. I'm very...
Starting point is 00:37:14 Oh my God. I love you. So, I'll get an ankle on the way. Be a man and will arrest everything else later. What happened? Just be real with it brother. I'm here. I'm here for you."
Starting point is 00:37:34 In an attempt to get Jason talking about Robert's murder, the police arrested Brittany, and the plan worked. Almost immediately after her arrest, Jace decided to bear all. It turned out that when Robert went to court to face the sexual assault charges against him, Jace was much more interested and involved in the outcome than Brittany had previously admitted. After Robert Nose was arrested for sexually assaulting Brittany, the prosecutors offered him a plea agreement that included five years in prison. Jason Britney were agreeable to that, but Robert didn't accept it. Given that there was no physical evidence, and the case was largely a he said she said
Starting point is 00:38:38 situation, the prosecutor has agreed to a lesser sentence of only five years' probation, and Robert was forced to register as a sex offender. After this disappointing outcome, Chase felt like justice had not been served. I don't blame him, necessarily. So he jumped on the sex offender registry website and found exactly to Robert's home. It was out, he just stood up there on the street. According to J. Son, July 4th, at about 230 in the morning, he drove to Robert's home. Not entirely sure what he was going to do when he got there, he parked at the end of Robert's driveway
Starting point is 00:39:56 and approached the home on foot. He then quietly removed an air conditioner from a window before climbing inside. Once there, he found his way into Robert's bedroom. I'm not boving while he was in the bay. Are we wrong? Yeah, I'm not that bad. So he's getting out of the bay. Probably when you walked in. I don't know. I don't know. I hope he likes the order of the bird.
Starting point is 00:40:31 Where'd you get the knife? I don't know. You got an out of the road trailer? Or you boy with him? I did bring it with me. So you got it probably out of the trailer. I didn't grab it. I don't want to grab it.
Starting point is 00:40:44 You don't want me to grab it in the knife? I don't remember where to see it. Where did you come to him? What's up with you? The life of my head. Yeah, I'm wearing a beard on. Yeah. You don't already. And you stabbed him all in? You've been stabbed in five times for a year. How many times? Five or six times? How big was the knife? It was a knife. What else? Oh, yeah, scared. Okay.
Starting point is 00:41:14 Hey. It was a bear. No, that bad. Jason admitted in a blind rage he brutally and violently murdered Robert Nose and then stuffed his body into a nearby plastic barrel. After this confession, Jason was arrested and charged with second degree murder, while waiting to be taken away the detectives allowed Jason to call his mother. Although Jace had confessed to the crime, and he knew he had a court battle ahead of him. He felt like there was some justification for what he had done. Perhaps he could rally some support and minimize
Starting point is 00:42:34 the severe punishment that was coming his way. Meanwhile, the detectives were suspicious that Jace hadn't been entirely honest about what happened on the night he killed Robert, and they were right. When Jace confessed, he claimed that he acted alone, but that was a lie. As Jace was stabbing Robert Nose to death, there was someone else inside that trailer. And this person didn't only witness the murder, they helped to make it happen. In July of 2015, 21-year-old Jace Creehan confessed to Louisiana homicide detectives that he brutally murdered his girlfriend's rapist, 47-year-old Robert Noes Jr. Jace claimed that he drove to Robert's house, climbed through a window, and attacked Robert as he slept.
Starting point is 00:44:01 In a blind rage, he stabbed Robert several times in the neck and killed him. Jace also claimed that he did all of this by himself, but the detectives had evidence that suggested otherwise. but I understand what you did. You understand? But I'm actually another question. And this is a hard, hard question. It was briefly with you. No. She wasn't with you as well. She was home. If briefly was there, I need to know that.
Starting point is 00:44:37 She had a reason to be there. More than you. Just know she had. Because she is a victim. But you need to tell me, because if she gets booked now, where she is, with the situation she has to dig out of, she's got a problem. Jason died that Brittany was with him when Robert was murdered. But there was something that Jason didn't know.
Starting point is 00:45:04 Brittany's DNA was found at the crime scene. For police, there was no doubt whatsoever that Brittany was there and very likely involved in committing the murder. I know she was in there. Right now, you can't tell me I'm on truth. Okay, fine. It's fine.
Starting point is 00:45:24 Did she come inside of the trailer? What is she, what is she, did she watch? She watched. Jason admitted that Brittany was inside the trailer during the murder. In an attempt to play down her involvement, he told the detectives that Brittany only watched it happen. But as Jason updated his confession, it turned out that her role was pretty significant. She helped navigate. We walked down the hallway, we got to the door. Sorry, you ready?
Starting point is 00:46:06 Just something up at the top. This house is a trial. So she said, that's him? How did that happen? That's him, good or not. And did he wake up at that time? He woke up at scream. Oh, he woke up screaming.
Starting point is 00:46:17 He screamed once. He ran in. I pulled him out of bed. I strangled him. How did you scream? You know what you're, oh, you joked him out of bed, I was trying to do it. I was trying to, you know, when you, oh, you choked him out. Yeah. With Jason's help, at seven months pregnant,
Starting point is 00:46:32 Brittany climbed through Robert's spare bedroom window and told Jason where to go. Not only did Brittany help navigate the home so that Jason could sneak in and find Robert's bedroom, but she also identified him. After Jace choked Robert out, Brittany grabbed some nearby nectais and handed them to Jace, who used them to tie Robert's hands behind his back. Thinking that he nodded them incorrectly, Jace told Brittany to find a knife.
Starting point is 00:47:06 Brittany went into the nearby kitchen and grabbed a long chopping knife. Her final role in the killing was handing Jace the murder weapon. I said Brittany, you can make knives, so cut it, you do it. And then put your hand in to me. I was trying to do a few more cuts.
Starting point is 00:47:27 And then start fighting me some more. So I just established. And I thought, where'd you stab him? First time? I think I did a little. And the back is next. I did two more left side. I think three more on the right side.
Starting point is 00:47:43 You say in five stab stand, move, let it go. I don't see you showing something much greater. Robert was stabbed 14 times, mostly in the back and sides of his neck with an especially long kitchen knife. As he bled out, Jace wrapped a thick leather belt around Robert's neck, put his foot on Robert's back and pulled up on the belt out on the snack. Yeah, protecting it.
Starting point is 00:48:25 Okay. According to Jace, Brittany didn't choke her stab-robert, but for police, that doesn't matter. Based on Jace's confession, Brittany was culpable, and no less guilty than Jace. When the detectives went back to Brittany to question her, she was unaware that Jason had confessed, so she continued to lie. Why would he tell us that? I wasn't there. Why would he tell us that, Brood? Who? Why would Chase tell us that?
Starting point is 00:49:11 I wasn't there. You needed some good truth about what happened. Chase already told us that you were there with him. We got you DNA at the house. Okay. Just telling you through he, we know already already. I want to hear from you. After the police revealed what they had on her, Brittany asked for an attorney. Unfortunately, for her, the police already had the evidence they needed. And when they asked for a lawyer, she also forced their hand.
Starting point is 00:49:50 Hey, Brittany. Look, I'm, I gotta let you come that you are being around. Okay. Should be in charge of second green murder. All right. But we're gonna move this chair over here. Let Chase come in and chase one to talk to you. So we're gonna let him come and sit with you for a minute. Okay. Let him see. All right. both Jason and Brittany were charged with second degree murder, but before sending them off to booking the detectives agreed to allow them to see each other. I'm sorry. It's okay. It's okay. You're gonna need to have a house. I'm gonna have to have two houses. On top of over 100,000 house ones over 200,000.
Starting point is 00:50:34 Your bond can't be more than that. They're gonna ruin me and jail. Yeah. I lost it, you see. They're a crazy forever. Pretty, pretty pretty pretty pretty. Not everything you see on TV is real. I promise't stupid. They were crowsing for him. Pretty pretty pretty pretty pretty. Not everything you see on TV is real. I promise you that.
Starting point is 00:50:50 I will be dead. I don't understand. I will shut you. Trust me. I don't want that to happen. You're... There's no death going before. Not first time you remember. Such words of comfort. Don't worry, you're only being booked for second degree murder.
Starting point is 00:51:13 But I guess, what else could J.J. say at this point? After this brief and emotional exchange, the detectives put J.S. in a patrol car so that he could direct them to the lake where he had previously tossed the murder weapon. During this drive, Jason elaborated on the details of the murder and his motive. Like I said, you know, she woke up in a panicking terror and I couldn't. I would go another day with her being afraid. So that was Friday night. Friday night. On the clock, one thirty.
Starting point is 00:51:50 And then like, would she woke up and all that and then y'all just, I just said it was got up. It's time. Yeah, it's it's time. It's time to do justice. According to Jace, Brittany suffered from constant night terrors and PTSD, which was caused by the repeated sexual assault that she had endured as a child. After the court system didn't punish her rapist the way she wanted, or give her the justice
Starting point is 00:52:17 that she and Jace felt she deserved, Jace decided that the two of them should go and get it themselves. Obviously, they didn't give much thought to how they were going to handle the fallout from getting that justice. Because once the deed is done and Robert is dead, neither of them had any ideas on how to dispose the body or how to clean up a murder scene. Was that to cover any DNA? What was the... I really don't know how. No, it's... We were going from the panic and shag.
Starting point is 00:53:11 Did you turn an on or she? I did. You did? Yeah, I did. I stuffed the drains, I turned them on. I didn't know what I was planning to achieve, I just thought. I'm just asking because it's not something that we see very often. After flooding the trailer, Jason Brittany drove home. Four days later, they were both arrested and charged with second-degree murder.
Starting point is 00:53:35 In Louisiana, a second-degree murder conviction carries a mandatory sense of life in prison. Despite this, Jason maintained that what he did was in Brittany's best interest, and that if they played their cards right, Brittany wouldn't only avoid being convicted, but she could avoid being prosecuted altogether. He didn't do it, I confess everything, and I don't even think I'm going to pass it. Grand jury in type. We're not speaking. Dave, I thought you did each other police that she and the security data also? No, I didn't tell them that at all. She didn't participate. They can't convict her.
Starting point is 00:54:14 We go to Grand jury next week anyway. Grand jury won't even die here because of my confession. During several of his recorded phone calls from jail, J. Seemed confident that his confession would protect Brittany and that a grand jury couldn't possibly indict her. Well, not surprisingly, things didn't play out the way he expected. After the indictments were handed down, J.S decided that the best strategy was to rally the public. If enough people supported what he and Brittany had done, then prosecutors and judges would
Starting point is 00:54:51 have no choice but to go easy on them. We have to make it believe that the people don't want me or bring me convicted of this crime. It's very easy for a policeman to get me off the stage of death, especially with the nature of the crime. There was a case in 1984. We're Gary Plum, the guy kidnapped and raped his son on camera on the live news. The case that Jason's referring to occurred in Baton Rouge in March of 1984. 25-year-old Jeffrey Dussett was shot and killed during a live news broadcast after being arrested for raping a 12-year-old boy. The shooter was the boy's father, and you've probably heard about this case a million times
Starting point is 00:55:44 on a million other podcasts. March of 1984, when authorities escorted 25-year-old Jeffrey Dusset through the Baton Rouge airport to face charges of kidnapping and sexual assault on a 12-year-old boy. The victim's father suddenly appeared, shot Dusset while news cameras were rolling. The father, 39-year-old Leon Gary Plouche pleaded no contest to a reduced charge of manslaughter and today received a suspended sentence with five years probation. The judge said prison would serve no useful purpose. Gary Plouche was initially charged with second-degree murder, but he agreed to a plea bargain that saw him convicted of manslaughter.
Starting point is 00:56:28 In the end, Gary only received five years of probation and he never spent a single day in prison. Thinking that Gary's case provided a precedent for his own case, Jace believed that he probably wouldn't be behind bars for very long. because she didn't have any participation in the crime at all. Just trust me. OK? I know what I'm talking about. I know what I'm doing. I promise you, this will not last. OK, I will be home soon. Wrong again, Jason.
Starting point is 00:57:13 By June of 2017, nearly two years after they were first arrested, both Jason and Brittany remained in jail. As they waited for their court proceedings to move forward, Brittany did something that Jason didn't see coming. They were both facing second-degree murder for the stabbing and choking death of Robert Nost Jr. in 2015, but Monk decided to plea to a lesser charge of manslaughter in exchange for her truthful testimony of exactly what happened in the early morning hours of July the 4th.
Starting point is 00:57:47 In order to avoid a second-degree murder conviction, Brittany agreed to testify against her ex-boyfriend, Jace. Needless to say, after she made this decision, the dynamics of their relationship changed just a little bit. That we're not going to what? That we're not going to cater to her anymore. We can all be in agreement with that now. Yeah, but you know that the fact, because she's testifying again, she's going to wear a fucking, fucking nishat, fucking, on-ass, oh, I swear to God, if I could find somebody that didn't even be on,
Starting point is 00:58:39 and I would have them beat the fuck out of her. Violence certainly seems to be the go-to solution for these people, doesn't it? Why would you even say something like that on a phone call that you know is being recorded? Also, what happened to Jason's supposed goal of protecting Brittany? That went away quick, huh? You'd think that a plea agreement for her would have him jumping for joy. Now, it seems like Jason was looking out for number one and trying to keep himself out of prison for the rest of his life. It's interesting how loyalties
Starting point is 00:59:12 can change after a few years in jail. In any event, given that prosecutors were willing to work with Brittany, Jace assumed that he would probably be able to cut a deal as well. Yet again, Jason was wrong. When his lawyers floated the idea of a manslaughter plea agreement, the prosecutors told them, no, we're not going to do that. Well, when I found out that it was death time, I told them I would accept manslaughter and they said, no, we're not accepting any offers from those criminals. And they want to take me to the trial. In December of 2017, Jason Creehan was set to go to trial
Starting point is 01:00:06 where he would face a charge of second degree murder. In a final, Hail Mary passed, Jayce hoped for a sympathetic jury and an acquittal. At least 90% of the world has an agreement with what I did. That's not about what I deserve. This is about what he deserves. I need an quit a while.
Starting point is 01:00:26 I agree. That's not far from us to think about it. I wouldn't convict anybody. I just wouldn't because I do not believe in my children. When it finally came time for Jason's trial, the prosecution presented a convincing argument. And it was the same argument that had previously been explained
Starting point is 01:00:46 by the detectives that investigated the case. and all that. Certainly, it's definitely a factor and we can't ignore that fact. But the bottom line is that no one deserves to be killed. No, and that's exactly what it was. That's the point. Nobody has that right. Nobody has, we have a justice system. It's not perfect for any means. Nobody, I don't think you would get
Starting point is 01:01:23 invited to claim that in this. But it's there for a reason in him. And we have a set of guidelines as citizens and we have to live by. Even though they had a reasonable argument, this was far from a slam dunk case. The victim, after all, was a convicted child rapist. And juries tend to not like those people. In fact, criminals don't seem to like those people either.
Starting point is 01:01:50 To sow some doubt and perhaps restore some sympathy for the victim, the prosecution pointed out that there was no physical evidence that Robert had ever sexually abused, Brittany, or anyone. Today the boyfriend is on trial for a second degree murder. The prosecution argued today there is no proof no abused Brittany, except her word against is. But they are the ones who prosecuted him for that accusation.
Starting point is 01:02:18 By pointing out the lack of physical evidence, the prosecution put themselves in a seemingly contradictory position. And they knew it. lack of physical evidence, the prosecution put themselves in a seemingly contradictory position, and they knew it. To counter this, they also explained that Robert's plea deal was fundamentally Brittany's decision, not theirs. After he was indicted, Brittany told prosecutors that she did not want to testify against Robert and that she just wanted to move on with her life. At Jason's trial, when Brittany took the stand to testify against him, she admitted
Starting point is 01:02:53 to this, among a few other things. Now, the transcript of the court proceeding show while seven months pregnant, she and Jason Creehan climbed into the residence, maneuvered through Mr. Nose's house, found him ultimately asleep in his bed and then attacked Nose in his sleep. Monk then went and obtained a serrated-edge knife, fairly substantial in nature. Creehan began to assault Nose, with multiple blows to the neck, upper torso, but specifically the neck area. Monk then found men's neck ties and a belt that was then utilized to tie the victim up as he was passing away. The report goes on to say after they allegedly stabbed him multiple times and strangled him, the victim was placed into a 55 gallon drum. While giving her testimony, Brittany also explained that while Jace was stabbing Robert, she walked into the adjoining bathroom
Starting point is 01:03:46 so that she wouldn't have to witness the murder. She described the stabbing sounds as crunching dried leaves, and when she went back to the bedroom, she saw blood squirting from Robert's neck. Then Brittany handed Jace a belt that she found hanging on the back of a door. Jason tied the belt around Robert's neck, put one foot on Robert's back, and pulled the belt upwards for about a minute. After Robert went limp, Jason and Brittany put his body in the barrel. They used towels to clean the blood and threw them in the barrel with Robert.
Starting point is 01:04:29 While doing this, Brittany was wearing latex gloves foolishly, like a true amateur. She took off the gloves and threw them in the barrel as well. Her DNA was later recovered from those gloves, linking her to the crime scene. After flooding Robert's trailer, Brittany and Jason went home. They took a shower together where they threw away the clothes they were wearing during the murder. And Jason, through the knife, used to kill Robert into a nearby lake. Under cross-examination this evening, defense attorneys suggested Monk manipulated her fiance
Starting point is 01:05:11 Creehan to murder Robert Nose, a man convicted of molesting her as a child. Prosecutors rebuffed the theory asking Monk again and again if she had forced Creehan to carry out the beating, stabbing, and strangulation of Nose. She said she did not. Tonight, prosecutors argued both Creehand and Monk made their own separate decisions to participate in the murder, one they both admitted to. Toward the end of Brittany's testimony, one of the prosecutors asked her if killing Robert had made her life better. life better. Shamefully, she told the jury that it had not.
Starting point is 01:05:47 In the end, the jury found that her ex-boyfriend, Jace Creehan, was guilty of second-degree murder. Friday afternoon, Judge Maribelis sent its Creehan to life in prison while Monk was sentenced to 35 years with credit for time served. Although the accused won't see the line of day for a while, the victim's brother thinks they both could stand for harsher punishments. He said he got the death penalty. He said he got life. A killer is a killer. Murder is a murder. It is what it is.
Starting point is 01:06:19 Although Jace received a life term, his sentence was later vacated. Two years after the conviction, the US Supreme Court made changes to the rules regarding jury verdicts. In April 2020, the Supreme Court rule that jurors nationwide must be unanimous to convict the criminal defendant. And that's what has the East Bend Ridge case of Jace Cree and coming back for hearing this morning. has the eSpenridge case of Jace Cree, he and coming back for hearing this morning. At the end of his trial, Jace's jury had voted 11 to one in favor to convict. Following the Supreme Court's ruling that jury verdicts must be unanimous, the prosecutors
Starting point is 01:06:57 offered Jace a plea deal and he accepted it. In August 2021, Jace pleaded guilty to manslaughter and was sentenced to 35 years in prison. As for Brittany, she too had pleaded guilty to manslaughter and received the same sentence. As of February 2022, they both remain in prison and continue to serve their 35-year terms. It's not about me. Yeah, that's what it's about Brittany. She's happy now. She'll be happy and safe. She'll never have to worry. And you know what? That's enough for me, because I get to have that mindset every day that I made her life better. But what I did.
Starting point is 01:08:16 Before things played out in court, Jay seemed genuine in his belief that what he had done was the right thing. He claimed that he was putting Brittany's best interest before his own. To state the obvious, as a 21-year-old man, Jayce Creehan wasn't a very smart guy. He made a lot of very stupid choices. If he truly wanted to help Brittany,
Starting point is 01:08:43 there were countless other ways that he could have gone about it. That didn't include stabbing someone in the neck 14 times and involving Brittany and the perpetration of that crime. Most of us, I would think, if put in a similar situation, would not do what he did. At the same time, Jason's willingness to help a loved one at any cost is, well, weirdly kind of admirable in a way. We all want to help the people we care about, especially if they're struggling with something
Starting point is 01:09:18 horrible that happened to them. Unfortunately, good intentions on their own are not enough. In order to be effective, good intentions need to be backed up with a little bit of brain cells and a foresight of consequences. Through it all, Jay stood by his altruism, but it didn't save him, and it didn't save the person that he wanted to help in the first place. In the end, Jace's lesson that bad decisions made with good intentions are still bad decisions. Alright, that's going to do it for another one of these silly things. Thank you for joining us and by the way if you are a plus member we're sending out the
