The Big Easy. Just off the southern tail of the Mississippi River, and just north of the Gulf of Mexico
Starting point is 00:02:37 is the famous and eccentric city of New Orleans, or New Orleans, or how the locals like to say it. Nollins. Known for its wild nightlife and a set of video tapes with girls acting wild in them, along with its lively music scene, spicyine and of course, Mardi Gras. New Orleans is the kind of place you might take up residency if you're looking for an unconventional lifestyle. Within this aberrant yet beautiful city is a popular neighborhood known as the French Quarter, which many residents simply refer to as the Quarter. Famous for its colorful buildings with cast iron balconies, the quarter also features a well-known stretch of pavement named Berbens Street.
Starting point is 00:03:35 Filled with jazz clubs, cagin eateries, and several usually raucous bars, the Rockest Bars. Bourbon Street can be a pretty fun and wild place. But on October 17th, 2006, not everyone in the French Quarter was enjoying themselves. That night, New Orleans police were called to the Omni Royal Orleans Hotel, which is just a short walk south of Bourbon Street. A dead body of a young man had reportedly been discovered on the roof of the hotel's parking garage. Apparently, he had either fallen, been pushed, or intentionally jumped off the roof of the hotel. After arriving on the scene and finding a severely mangled corpse, the investigators began searching the young man's pockets for identification.
Starting point is 00:04:35 In his back pocket, they found a note. From the suicide note found on Zachary Bowen's body, this is not accidental. I had to take my own life to pay for the one that I took. If you send a patrol car to 626 North Rampart, you will find the dismembered corpse of my girlfriend, Addy, in the oven, on the stove, and in the fridge, and a full sign confession from myself, Zach Bowen. 28-year-old Zach Bowen lived with his 30-year-old girlfriend, Addy Hall, in an apartment near the French Quarter. At one point, they were both bartenders and were very good friends with another bartender. 22-year-old Margaret Sanchez. My name is Margaret Sanchez and Addy and Zach were two of my very best friends.
Starting point is 00:05:26 I was there when they first met. I met Eddie when I first started bartending. She was the one who taught me every, you know, most of what I know about bartending. Zach, I met about a month after I met Eddie when he started bartending with us. They were just, they were awesome people. After finding Zach about and dead in an apparent suicide, bartending with us. They were just, they were awesome people. After finding Zach Boen dead in an apparent suicide, the police raced to his apartment. When they arrived, they found what Zach had described in his suicide note. Zach's
Starting point is 00:05:58 girlfriend, Addy Hall, had been dismembered, and her body parts were found partially cooked in the oven and in roasting pans on the stove. They also found Zack's written confession. I killed her. I very calmly strangled her. It was very quick. After sexually defiling the body, I was posed with the question of how to dispose of the corpse.
Starting point is 00:06:29 I figured I should dismember the body, cook the pieces to ease the separation of flesh from bone, and gradually dispose of the meat in various ways. So I moved the body to the tub, got the saw, and hacked off her feet, hands, and head. Put her head in the oven after giving it an awful haircut. I saw it off the rest of the legs and the arms, put them in roasting pans. I set to work on the torso. Halfway through the task, I stopped and thought about what I was doing. I scared myself, not by the action of calmly strangling the woman whom I've loved for one and a half years, but by my entire lack of remorse. I decided to spend the $1,500 cash I had being happy until I killed myself.
Starting point is 00:07:28 So that's what I did. Good food, good drugs, good strippers, good friends, fuck it all, and fucking no regrets. It's just about time now. After the discovery of Adi's dismembered body and Zach's confession, the people that New Zach mostly attributed his actions to PTSD, caused by his combat experience in Kosovo and Iraq, that occurred during his time in the army. But Zach was a good person. I just think that the situation that he had to go through in life, it was just too much for him to handle. He just snapped. The military, I think
Starting point is 00:08:14 the military broke that man. For police, the deaths of Zach and Adi were a clear cut case of murder suicide, but that assumption would eventually be called into question. Six years later, in June of 2012, a dismembered torso of a different woman washed up on the beach in Bay St. Louis, Mississippi. Crews working on a beach renourishment project came across a gruesome site on Thursday evening, a torso belonging to a Caucasian female along the beach in Bay St. Louis.
Starting point is 00:08:50 She was dismembered and decapitated. Apparently, the body washed ashore from an unknown location when I'm sure. After the discovery of this human torso, one of the first people to arrive on the scene was the chief investigator at Mississippi's Hancock County Sheriff's Office, Glenn Granan. So I started in 1975 in the metropolitan world. I was at the local wall, there, when you missed the city, which is on the coast here. I was in line, I got a phone call from my assistant at the top. We reported that we had a human torso, which I found the beach. Of course, I directly went out there and I was a lot of detectives investigating stuff. The investigation it there.
Starting point is 00:09:46 For Chief Investigator Grannon, who has since been promoted to Commander, when he and his detectives arrived on the scene and began examining the torso, it didn't take long for them to realize that they were dealing with the homicide. to the coast. I think we need to try to disguise the identity of the torso, not sure if anything is in the water. Not very long, but I'll leave the couple of days. Two days later, and further down the beach, in a separate jurisdiction, even more body parts began washing ashore. As of earlier this morning, probably around 6 around 6am, our discovery was made in past
Starting point is 00:10:46 christian of a part of a leg. Searched the beach and they found another part. Looks like the other, the second part is the thigh part of the leg. Long Beach Police Department, Aided Harrison County and discovered a head of a deceased person. After the body parts were collected, the medical examiner concluded that they'd all come from the same unidentified female who appeared to be in her mid-twenties. For police, their number one priority was finding out who this woman was. And to do that, they began looking at missing persons cases in the area. They soon learned that a young mother from the neighboring city of New Orleans had been reported missing, just shortly before the torso washed ashore in Mississippi. New Orleans police say 22-year-old Jaron Lockhart was last seen by her boyfriend around
Starting point is 00:11:46 8 p.m. on Tuesday in the 2400 block of Tulane Avenue. Her boyfriend says she took a cap to her job in the 300 block of Bourbon Street, but began to worry when he couldn't reach her. She hasn't been seen since. Jaron Lockhart was born in Independence, Louisiana, and grew up in and around the small town of Albany, about 60 miles north of New Orleans. Jaren loved to dance. She liked to write poetry and hoped to one day become a hairdresser. To her friends and family, Jaren was an especially kindhearted and extremely likable young woman.
Starting point is 00:12:28 Everyone that knew Jaren considered her to be sweet, really funny, and just an overall decent human being. The most common adjectives people seem to use when describing Jaren, or generous, and giving. As a beloved daughter, sister, girlfriend, and friend to many, Sharon was important to a lot of people. Most of all, her three-year-old daughter, Jaren had developed a drug problem. And to feed her addiction, she worked as an exotic place strip of California
Starting point is 00:13:27 call it. On the street, we had a few of those on the street. She had a young child, two of them on the street, she had a boyfriend, both of them were understandable, but he moored in her sufferable. We also, both of them were addicted to heroin. They had a pretty expensive daily habit that she tried to make up and as polar reasons, she would do some things that I would consider
Starting point is 00:13:52 a high risk for him. But my own counsel, you know, once he got to the grips of the Ireland, she couldn't recover from, she seemed like a family was loved. You know, they certainly could sign a lot of tears, a lot of friends. All these questions, you know, really giving young women photographs of a very attractive. After Jaren was reported missing, her family pleaded for anyone to come forward with information. At the same time, they held on to hope that the dismembered body parts found in Mississippi
Starting point is 00:14:30 didn't have anything to do with Jaren's disappearance. Please come out and tell us something. Why does no anything that way we can try to find her, because we love her very much. And we want her to know that we love her very much and we want her home. You haven't gotten any confirmation that that's your sister, correct? No, no, no confirmation that that's my sister, I'm hoping it's not. Sadly, Jaren's family did eventually
Starting point is 00:14:56 receive the heartbreaking news that the dismembered body parts that washed ashore on the beaches of Mississippi did indeed belong to 23-year-old Jerem Lockhart. She was always kind to everyone, and she's loved everybody. No, there was no hate in her body. I think the hardest thing for me is my mom. She's like me, is there? I just wanna say that I loved my daughter with all my heart.
Starting point is 00:15:30 Well, did you stir? I hope you saw her. And I hope you heard me about family. The autopsy that was performed on Jaron, not only identified her but also provided investigators with crucial information. Specifically the cause of her death. I was learned that she was killed was a single, staying on to the chest and she was more likely to cease when our lens will remain in our hands or her mood. Jaren was killed by a single stab wound to the heart.
Starting point is 00:16:12 And after she was dead, someone skinned off her tattoos to conceal her identity, dismembered her body and threw her body parts into the Gulf of Mexico. body and threw her body parts into the Gulf of Mexico. To track down the culprit or culprits, the police sought out Jaren's last known whereabouts, and they learned that she was last seen at her job, the downtown strip club temptations. In the early morning hours of June 6, 2012 at about 2 a.m., surveillance cameras both inside and outside the strip club captured Jaron leaving work with a young woman who appeared to be in her late 20s, and a man who appeared to be in his late 30s. In an attempt to identify these two people, the police released the surveillance footage to the
Starting point is 00:17:05 media. Surveillance cameras inside temptations on Bourbon Street captured these images of a man and woman entering the club in the early morning hours last Wednesday. Around 20 minutes later, they left with dancer Jaron Lockhart authorities say, preliminary and unconfirmed information leads them to believe the man possibly works as a door man at a nearby club, while the woman they say is possibly a street performer. I mean, if they're not involved, they could be victims. If nothing else, they're witnesses to the last time we know that she is alive.
Starting point is 00:17:40 After the temptation's surveillance footage was broadcast, it didn't take long before the police received a phone call from the mother of the young woman that was captured on the camera, leaving the strip club with Jaren. This mother identified her own daughter as 28-year-old Margaret Sanchez, the same Margaret Sanchez, whose best friend, Addy Hall, had presumably been murdered and dismembered by her of 23-year-old exotic dancer and mother of a three-year-old Jaron Lockhart washed up on various beaches in Mississippi. Jaron worked at the Bourbon Street Strip Club temptations in downtown New Orleans. As she was last seen on surveillance camera footage leaving work with a woman
Starting point is 00:19:06 in her late 20s and a man in his late 30s. As police went to work to identify these two people, Jaren's family and friends said of final farewell to a young woman that was obviously loved by many people. The guy we pray God for the families and friends of Jaren Lockhart. We pray that you be with them, God, and comfort them through this hard time. I know my sister's up there just looking down and she's so happy that all these people are here for her
Starting point is 00:19:39 right now. And it means everything to me and my family. After the surveillance footage from the Strip Club was released to the media, the woman that Jaren left work with was eventually identified as 28-year-old Margaret Sanchez, and the 30-something man that was with He was like a street entertainer in downtown. Seems like he was a drug user, most of a lot of the particular crowd.
Starting point is 00:20:16 He just lived day to day and lived in a family member's house. One of the family members, you know, had a meeting with him and he just wanted water, One of the most famous members, you know, that I believe in past the way they did what they wanted, what opened, and we all got a key key set thing, and things like that, three things. And it's just how it touched the reality about kids. Margaret and her boyfriend lived together in a small house in Kenner, Louisiana,
Starting point is 00:20:39 just 10 miles east of Bourbon Street, and the strip club where Jaron worked. When the police learned where they could find Margaret just 10 miles east of Bourbon Street and the Strip Club where Jaron worked. When the police learned where they could find Margaret and her boyfriend, they quickly decided to pick them up. We learned that they were a birthday party, we went into that event, so they kinda had helped because they committed a number of traffic violations
Starting point is 00:21:04 and allowed us to go ahead and make the traffic stop. We got pulled over for not having to blinker on. It took forever. They kept saying that they couldn't find the insurance on the car and then they said my information wasn't popping up and then they said his information wasn't popping up and then they went to go talk to him and he bolted from the cars. After Margaret was pulled over, the police attempt to do identify her
Starting point is 00:21:32 boyfriend who was sitting in the passenger seat. When one of the officers approached the passenger door, Margaret's boyfriend took off running. At some point during the pursuit, Margaret's boyfriend stopped, turned to face the police, and began yelling that he had a gun. He was subsequently arrested, and was found to not have a gun. More than likely, he was attempting suicide by cop. Back at the car, Margaret Sanchez was also taken into police custody. Hancock County investigators tell us that the two persons of interest that they were looking for in the surveillance video that they had released to us earlier on this surveillance video, that these two people here are now in police custody. Now the woman has been identified
Starting point is 00:22:20 as Margaret Sanchez, but they have not been able to positively ID this man here because he has worked under a number of different alias names, so they're trying to positively identify him at this point. Margaret Sanchez was born in April of 1984 in Louisiana, and from an early age she had a low tolerance for boredom and a desire to experience life on her own terms, which didn't fall in line with what her mother wanted. Not interested in her mom's desire to see Margaret live a conventional lifestyle and attend college, Margaret left home after high school and moved to New Orleans.
Starting point is 00:23:01 As a young woman, Margaret was attractive, but eccentric. She held strong spiritual beliefs and the atmosphere of New Orleans, specifically the French Quarter, only encouraged those beliefs. I think you know what I'm probably hinting at here. Margaret at some point, began developing an interest in voodoo, black magic, and witchcraft. By her mid-twenties, Margaret had already given birth to two sons, and after developing a drug habit, she soon surrendered custody of both her children to her mother. Despite this, or perhaps because of it, Margaret's relationship with her mom remained tense. In her own words, Margaret had struggled to maintain a good relationship with anyone, her whole life.
Starting point is 00:23:55 I don't have a very good track record with anybody. You know, people say good things about me. Like, I think I choose real sweet, because it's horrible. It's really funny, she's a little gaff in that, great personality, but she really doesn't like the best toy. Margaret also had a passion for spinning poy, which is a unique performance art that involves swinging tethered weights through a variety of rhythmical and geometric patterns. Most people know this art form as fire twirling. I'll tell you, sometimes people can actually be a caricature. I mean stereotypes are there for a reason.
Starting point is 00:24:35 Anyway, through her mid-twenties, Margaret supported herself as a bartender, serving drinks at various bars and by street performing in the French Quarter in downtown New Orleans. One night after finishing up a performance, Margaret Meta-Man who introduced himself as Alan Rice. I guess because she was gone to the court, like I said, she was a street performer. You spend a boy, you live fireballs, you batons, all this little stuff. And maybe he took a liking to her. I don't know what he thought, but some kind of video of dub. And then she told me, no, we're romantically involved.
Starting point is 00:25:16 I mean, he's a good guy. He wants me to, wants to help him kick him a boy. And again, she thought, I don't know, the press has been answered. Apparently, when Margaret and Alan first met on Bourbon Street, it was love at first sight. At least, that seemed to be the case for Alan. I feel lonely the day I seen you on Bourbon Street turning the point. And then when I seen you that night, it's a little spark inside of me.
Starting point is 00:25:44 And something spoke to me and said, you can have a light and be with someone if you so choose to. After this chance encounter between Margaret and Alan, the two began dating, and the relationship was extremely sexual. They were known to have three sums, and would sometimes brag about how frequently they had sex. As the two grew closer, Margaret eventually introduced Allen to her family,
Starting point is 00:26:13 which included her father. restaurant and his wife had beauty salon. She was killed in a tragic accident. He fell at pieces, went bankrupt, lost a salon and lost a restaurant and gave me a rebuild's life. Although Margaret's father was concerned that his daughter's new relationship might be moving a little too fast, he liked Alan and from his perspective all seemed well. Margaret's neighbors, however, saw a very troubling side of the relationship. Can you describe Alan and Margaret's relationship? Abusive. Which one would be an abusive?
Starting point is 00:26:58 Him more than her. And how would you describe it? Well, they never did anything in front of us, but it was always, she tried to talk to him and he'd get defensive and snap at her, then they started going at it. Did you notice in the last week or so, paint changes in their relationship? No, it's just like it normally is, they always fight and then argue and it's like, I keep on telling him, you know, it's not gonna work. To their neighbors, it was pretty obvious that Margaret and Allen's relationship
Starting point is 00:27:30 probably wouldn't work out. And even Margaret herself admitted that Allen had issues controlling his temper. According to her, the two of them had come to blows on at least one occasion. He gets on my case because he says I talk to him wrong or that I say things wrong or that I look at him wrong or like... Sometimes he tries to keep it under control. He yells and screams and punches walls and throws things and the only time that he's
Starting point is 00:27:59 ever really laid his hands on me was the day that he came at me and he was really scared and I was ready to punch him again. So he comes out of the back door and he starts charging towards me and I go to get up out of the lawn chair and he just flips he first he flipped the fucking weight bench the whole weight bench into the garden and then he came and flipped me out of the chair. And that's when I started punching and kicking him and I started screaming. Despite the abusive nature of their relationship, and even though they had only known each other for less than four months, Margaret and Alan decided to get married,
Starting point is 00:28:41 at least in their own particular eccentric way. As the last two people seen with murdered and dismembered exotic dancer, Jaron Lockhart, Margaret and Alan became suspects, and were both taken into police custody. Soon after that, Margaret was informed that her so-called husband, Alan Rice, wasn't Alan Rice, and that he had been lying to her about who he was this entire time that they were together. Tonight you was with an individual, correct? Who is the individual that you were with? As far as I know his name is Leslie Alain Rice.
Starting point is 00:29:37 And do you call him Leslie or do you call him out? I call him Alan. How long have you known Alan? I've known Alan since the middle of February I guess. What kind of relationship do you have with Alan? He's supposed to be my husband, but I guess he's not my husband because I'm being called an Alan isn't even really. Not interested in the shock and trauma that Margaret was experienced from having learned
Starting point is 00:30:03 that her husband wasn't who he said he was. Detectives began questioning her about the night she left the strip club with Jaron Lockhart. Have you ever worked in the French Quarter? Yeah, I worked over in Straitbroen and offer almost ten years. Yes, ma'am. What about Alan? Did he ever work in the quarter? That's where I met him. When was the last time that he was in the French quarter? Last week, I guess it was Tuesday and last week.
Starting point is 00:30:36 And was you with anyone? And who was you with? Alan. According to Margaret, she and Alan had a dog, and the rental terms of the house they were sharing didn't allow pets. Margaret claimed that the reason she and Alan went to the French Quarter that night was to find Alan's old boss who was interested in adopting the animal. The reason why we went to the Quarter was to try to talk to somebody and to take them,
Starting point is 00:31:05 because we had two days to get rid of them. He had parvo, we nursed him back from parvo. Parvo is a potentially deadly virus that can be transmitted from dog to dog. At the time, this small detail that Margaret mentioned about nursing a dog back from Parvo seemed insignificant. But it does come into play later. So just remember Parvo. We had a few drinks. That's still at osu.
Starting point is 00:31:35 When did you all leave there? I don't know. Did you all leave by yourself? I think so, yeah. You think so? I'm pretty sure. I know I talked to a girl who wanted me to find her something and I went to this one girl at stilettos that I knew from around her boyfriend's methealer. What did she want to font one you did font for?
Starting point is 00:32:04 Drugs. What is your favorite methealer when you want to font one of your different font for drugs? Directly adjacent to temptations was another strip club called Stilettos, and Margaret claimed that she left temptations to talk to someone in Stilettos about drugs. The surveillance footage backed up her story as it showed Margaret leaving temptations and walking directly into the adjacent strip club. But then, Jaren and Alan walked out of temptations together, met up with Margaret outside stilettos, and the three of them walked off together into the night.
Starting point is 00:32:40 So where'd y'all go when you left the little home? You went home? Yeah, because I wasn't feeling good. Does you weren't feeling good when you left the little home? You went home? Yeah, because I wasn't feeling good. Did you wasn't feeling good? How'd you get home? In the car. Where'd you park the car? At home. No, when you were downtown.
Starting point is 00:32:55 Oh, no. Okay, listen. Margaret, it's very important that you tell the truth because this will be your one opportunity. Well, we know to a place we don't think that you're the particularly responsible party. That you all are responsible. Well, number one, one, one, we just started this interview and you tell me a fib because I know who you left the place with. I live with Alan and someone else. Also another dancer had previously told police that Margaret inquired with her about hiring a stripper to have a threesome with. Margaret and Alan were celebrating Alan's
Starting point is 00:33:40 birthday after all and they offered to pay 500 bucks for anyone willing to partake in their celebration. Meanwhile, another dancer had been propositioned by Alan to perform at a private party, and Alan was willing to pay $700. Margaret struck out, but Alan was directed to an attractive young dancer who might be interested. 23-year-old, Jaron Lockhart. After Jaron was approached by Alan, surveillance camera footage showed Jaron going into a locker room, packing up a bag, and leaving temptations with Margaret and Alan. On her way out, Jaron spoke to a waitress and said that she was leaving to work a party because she needed to pay her rent. The surveillance footage clearly showed
Starting point is 00:34:34 Margaret, Alan, and Jaren all leaving together, but that wasn't all. So, Jaren's cameras throughout the French Quarter also captured the three of them walking together for several blocks. Here's what we know, Margaret, and you're probably already aware that all of the businesses, or most of the businesses, down there in the French Quarter, have video cameras. We know that when you left, you was with Alan and you were with another girl. I don't remember leaving with anybody. I was feeling really sick. I had to drive because Alan doesn't have a driver's license. So you're driving? Who else is in the vehicle?
Starting point is 00:35:18 It's me and Alan. So you're saying that there's nobody else in the vehicle with you? Not that I can remember. I was feeling really sick and I remember that I wanted to throw up. Okay. So you go home. Yeah. What do you do when you go home? I threw up in shit all night. What is Alan doing?
Starting point is 00:35:39 Taking care of me. So there was no plan for Alan to take this girl to a private party. I don't know, I don't know. Yeah, and now look, it's time, it's time to start. You got to quit with the not all remember and this and that because you know. I'm telling you what I know, I don't know anything. No, you know, I'm telling you what you know. And you say that the...
Starting point is 00:36:04 Oh, you're not harassing me. We're not harassing you. We're trying to get to the truth. I don't know anything. I don't know anything. I don't know anything. I don't know anything. I don't know anything. I don't know anything. I don't know anything. I don't know anything. I don't know anything. I don't know anything. I don't know anything. I don't know anything.
Starting point is 00:36:12 I don't know anything. I don't know anything. I don't know anything. I don't know anything. I don't know anything. I don't know anything. I don't know anything. I don't know anything.
Starting point is 00:36:20 I don't know anything. I don't know anything. I don't know anything. I don't know anything. I don't know anything. I don't know anything. I don't know anything. I don't know anything. I didn't get any sleep. I threw up in shit all night that night. So where's the girl? What girl? The girl that you left the club with. You and Alan left the club with the girl. I don't remember leaving with any girl. I don't remember anybody else being with us. I remember Alan and the front seat right next to me telling me to just make it home.
Starting point is 00:36:44 Alan in the front seat right next to me telling me to just make it whole. And there's no girl. No, no, no. Oh, you would know. Would you not Margaret? I don't. Come on, young lady. Would you not Margaret? Would you not know if there was a girl?
Starting point is 00:36:55 I mean, if there was a girl there, I would have said there was a girl there, but to my knowledge, to my recollection, there is no girl. Frankly, the surveillance footage is irrefutable. We've watched all of it. There is no denying that Jaren Lockhart left the strip club with Margaret and Alan and walked several blocks with them. What happened after, where they were out of the view of the camera, was anyone's guess.
Starting point is 00:37:22 But the police theorized that Margaret and Alan took Jaren home, stabbed her in the chest, dismembered her body, and then drove to Mississippi, where they dumped her body parts in the Gulf of Mexico. Margaret, however, claimed that she went to work later that same morning. I had to go to work the next morning. I had to open and I had to clean the bins. So you went to work the next morning, the following morning where? At Treasure Isle. Treasure Isle was a tavern on the northern edge of New Orleans.
Starting point is 00:38:00 And according to Margaret's boss, Margaret did have a full-time shift at the tavern on the day in question. Did Margaret Sanchez work for you? Yes, she was a bartender. Okay, are you familiar with her boyfriend? Someone. Okay, and how do you know him? Just coming in to drop her off because I made a sure vehicle.
Starting point is 00:38:22 Okay, do you know his name? Or... She called her Rooster. Did she work on June 6, 2012? Yes. Okay, what time did she come to work? She came to work at around 1040. Okay, and was Rooster with them when she came to work that day?
Starting point is 00:38:40 Yes. Okay. When she came in that day, was she acting strange or differently than she normally does? Yeah, she looked like, you know, she had been a whole night, she had a baby and a lot of that. The only thing I did notice when they came in Wednesday, I told the crew, they took this, that I had this thing I looked at guys' feet,
Starting point is 00:39:01 and he was wearing flip-flops that day on the six, and it's really rough, even, you know, it's tough and it looked like he had, he usually looks clean, like a little bit, he looked good, went to either. Okay, so both of them were kind of rough looking, I'd say. Yeah, they were. Okay, did Bruce just stay the whole day at it, and he leave. No, he came in and he sat on the computer for a little bit,
Starting point is 00:39:26 and he left. That evening, Alan picked Margaret up from work at about 7 p.m. and Margaret claimed that she and Alan briefly went home to pick up their dog and then drove to a local supermarket in Kenner, Louisiana, to deliver the dog to its new owners. This was also later confirmed by surveillance cameras and the dog's new owners. So do you know what time you was when you arrived home? He woke me up and said, come on.
Starting point is 00:40:08 The detectives believed that after the dog adoption was done, Alan and Margaret drove to Mississippi, where they dumped Jaren's body parts in the Gulf of Mexico. And they had a good reason to suspect this. Once again, surveillance cameras came into play, which clearly showed Margaret's car driving into Mississippi at about 9.30 pm that night, and about two hours later, driving back into Louisiana. Well, we know that your car was in Mississippi on Wednesday night.
Starting point is 00:40:42 You remember going to Mississippi? No. You don't remember the girl that was in the car that you left the ball with you Don't remember going to Mississippi, but you remember everything else. Yeah, you get perfect recollection. Let me take something Margaret. You're in a deep line right now, okay? You left temptations with this girl. I know we With this girl you left with her. You know I know, with this girl, you left with her. You left? No, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no,
Starting point is 00:41:08 no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no,'s best friend, Addy Hall, was likely the furthest thing from any investigators' mind. In fact, when they were questioning Margaret, they probably weren't aware that Margaret had any connection to Addy at all. But they were made aware of it when Margaret brought it up. The young lady that she left the ball on with has been murdered. Is that the girl that I keep telling me about from the news?
Starting point is 00:41:52 Yes, do you understand? You left the ball with her. I felt so bad for her family because I had a friend. My friend was adding a half. And she was cut off and she was cooked in her boyfriend's joke all the hotels. Okay. They were my best friends. Okay.
Starting point is 00:42:12 Well who cut this trailer? I don't know. I think you do. I think you know Alan did it. Margaret, we're piecing all this together. I don't know. We know you're with this girl. Know your vehicle is in Mississippi.
Starting point is 00:42:26 You never gonna see kids again. You got to really come to. I don't, I didn't go to Mississippi. Your car is in Mississippi. We have a picture you call in Mississippi. Despite the evidence, Margaret maintained her position that she had no memory of Jaren Lockhart or driving to and from Mississippi. Margaret? You're not telling us the whole truth. Are you a bad person that doesn't care? Are you somebody that's trying to make things right?
Starting point is 00:42:59 I care very much. It's okay. I'm telling you everything I know. No, you're not telling you everything I know. No, you know. You can use this convenient I don't remember but there's things that we know when you're making stuff. Why are you accusing me of making things up? I'm telling you everything I know. Are you know what? If you're gonna do this to me, you just sit there and tell me that I know. Shut up. Because if you're gonna sit there and tell me that I'm lying
Starting point is 00:43:24 and I'm not lying. I want to talk to somebody. He's in tell me that I'm no, shut up! Because I just did that and tell me that I'm lying and I'm not lying! I want to talk to somebody, he's in there saying that I'm making shit up and up! I'm gonna be an upset with you, I'm saying it! We're gonna get you spanned up, mom! We're so mad! We're gonna get you spanned up, we're gonna get you spanned up, we're gonna get you spanned up! Clearly thinking that Margaret was holding back in an attempt to protect her so-called husband, the investigators attempted to get Margaret to turn on him by reminding her that the
Starting point is 00:43:50 guy was a lying piece of shit. Yes, so he wasn't married and his grandma didn't die and he wasn't in the marines I mean that he's telling you was a lot. Okay, problem is is this is a bad person I understand and I'm telling y'all everything that I know I'm actually know you're not telling us everything You're being mean to me and I don't like your attitude And I would appreciate it if you didn't talk to me because you keep telling me things that I'm supposedly no and I don't know them. I don't know them so leave me alone. I don't like you.
Starting point is 00:44:32 Go away. I don't like you. Go away. You know, I say one thing. No, you can't. I wish not to hear anything that you say. Okay. Well, that's one way to handle a police interrogation, I guess.
Starting point is 00:44:46 In the end, Margaret gave away nothing. She held firm to her lack of memory, and this interview came to an end. But not before Margaret asked an important question. What is his real name? Man? Who is he? I'll tell you in a little bit. but he's not who he told you. And he's a bad person.
Starting point is 00:45:11 And I'm just, I'm not just him. You OK? And he's going to jail. OK. It turns out that Allen's real name is Terry Christopher Speaks. And during the time he was in New Orleans and throughout his relationship with Margaret, Terry was on the run and hiding from the law. Speaks was convicted in North Carolina in 2003 on three counts of indecent liberty with
Starting point is 00:45:39 a minor. The 39-year-old was in federal court today for violating the rules of registering as a sex offender. Terry Speaks was born in Surrey, North Carolina, in September of 1972. And according to him, his childhood was pretty rough. I felt like I got the raw end of a deal. abusive home, abusive mother, molested as a child, raped as a child, beat as a child, you know, neglected, moved around all the time. So I felt a bit angry.
Starting point is 00:46:16 So I think I've been pretty much a self-sabotageable whole life. Shortly after graduating high school, Terry speaks got married. He and his wife had two children, and the fact that Terry had kids was a detail about his life that he neglected the tale Margaret about among a lot of other things. In need of a way to support his family, Terry joined the Marine Corps, which ultimately stationed him away from his family. As a result, Terry's wife ended up filing for divorce, and when she left him, she took the kids with her.
Starting point is 00:46:56 After finishing up his enlistment in the Marines, Terry went back to North Carolina, where he met another woman, got married, and had yet another child. But once again, that marriage ended in divorce. Of course, it didn't help that during this second marriage at age 31, Terry decided to start dating a 14-year-old child. Or I probably shouldn't say dating. The sex offense short that I had now is I met a girl through mutual friends of mine. And we just started dating, and then when I find out how old she is,
Starting point is 00:47:36 through like, it's too late because she has already been a runner-weight that nobody knew she was a runner-weight. Well, I don't know nowadays girls look for if they're 16, they look 25 and 30. I thought she was 19. So I was kind of pissed off. I imagine you weren't.
Starting point is 00:47:49 And that's why I kept violating probation. I'm not a predator, I'm not a pitify, I'm not a child blister. I got caught in a bad situation with the wrong person. After being convicted of indecent liberties with a minor in 2003, Terry speaks went to prison, and part of the terms of his eventual release was that he registered as a sex offender. Feeling that the rules shouldn't apply to him, Terry skipped town and eventually made his way to New Orleans. for no one. I just used Alan just to change the name. Yeah. Terry changed his name and attempted
Starting point is 00:48:48 to start a new life with a new identity. Unfortunately, his past caught up with them. And after police arrested him and his girlfriend Margaret, both of them once a jail. Terry was charged with violating the terms of his probation and failing to register as a sex offender while Margaret faced charges of harboring a sex offender. All the while, Margaret's father sympathetically stood by his daughter. Alan, Alan's name is Alan, and I found it out. Yeah, no, Barry. I know, baby.
Starting point is 00:49:23 Why did you find out who you really was? When they picked us up. OK, well. Oh, we did look alike, Jerry. So we talked, we both got taken for a ride. That's the past, OK? I told him, I told you, and I will beat myself. The past doesn't mean anything to me.
Starting point is 00:49:41 What's more important is the present and an opportunity to move forward in the future. As both Margaret and Terry sat in jail, the Hancock County Sheriff's Office continued to investigate the murder of Jaron Lockhart. They executed a search warrant on the home that Terry and Margaret shared, but unfortunately, the search came up with next to nothing. My theory is they had to pay the prep to stay up there. Maybe some kind of plastic underneath, to see or whatever. Once they stay up there, she went to see.
Starting point is 00:50:29 You go in the bathroom, go to the tub, you cut, you do, you just remember, and you crack it up. If you know what you're gonna do, think about it, okay? If I know I'm gonna kill you at my house, I have to do a lot of things to prevent any evidence of being alive life partner.
Starting point is 00:50:45 So I don't think that's why I'm so clean because they were carrying everything away. That they never been anything significant. The police were unable to prove that Jaren was ever inside Margaret's car or house. The only thing they could prove was that Terry and Margaret were the last two people with Jaron before she disappeared, and that they had later driven to and from Mississippi, where Jaron's body parts were likely dumped in the Gulf of Mexico. With no physical evidence and no admission of guilt, chief investigator Grannon began considering alternative charges to murder. I was strongest position I believe is an alternative
Starting point is 00:51:31 judge other than a homicide. I don't really want to discuss exactly what that is just yet. We believe we also have a pretty strong case for homicide. But if I judge them when a homicide, and I'm not successful with a conviction, then double jeopardy comes into play, and I'll never get another chance. As the weeks turned into months, the police were also unable to prove that Margaret Sanchez had any knowledge of Terry's past and that he was an absconded sex offender.
Starting point is 00:52:03 In all likelihood, she probably had no idea. So Louisiana prosecutors ended up dropping those charges. No charges related to the Lockhart case have been filed against Sanchez or Speaks. And WDSU News has learned that the DA may not pursue charges at all against Sanchez. Speaks was transferred to North Carolina where he faces unrelated sex offender charges.
Starting point is 00:52:27 Again, Margaret Sanchez, one of the suspects in the Jaron Lockhart murder, was released from the Tangerine Road Parish jail just about an hour ago. Without definitive evidence that Margaret was responsible for or involved in the murder of Jaron Lockhart, this likely killer was set free, and the Lockhart murder case went cold. Meanwhile, Terry speaks pleaded guilty to his charge of not registering as a sex offender and was sent to federal prison in Otisville, New York to serve his time. While there, his relationship with Margaret went on one hell of a roller coaster ride, and eventually everything came crashing down around them. In June of 2012, after becoming the main suspects, and the murder and dismemberment of 23-year-old
Starting point is 00:53:51 exotic dancer, Jaren Lockhart, Margaret Sanchez and her boyfriend, Alan Rice, were taken into police custody. After this happened, Margaret was made aware that her boyfriend wasn't actually Alan Rice. His real name was Terry Christopher Speaks, an absconded sex offender on the run from the law. Both of them denied any involvement with the Jaron Lockhart murder, or that they even knew who Jaron was. Not believing her denials but still unable to prove she was guilty, the police
Starting point is 00:54:27 arrested Margaret and charged her with harboring a sex offender. Meanwhile, her boyfriend Terry was also arrested after he pleaded guilty to not registering as a sex offender. Terry was sent to federal prison in Otisville, New York to serve his time. Eventually, the police and prosecutors conceded that Margaret probably didn't know that Terry was a sex offender, and they let her go. After about two months, Margaret was released from jail and was finally able to make contact with Terry in prison. Needless to say, Margaret wasn't very happy with him. For a fucking asshole. Say what? You really?
Starting point is 00:55:15 I'm sorry. Very, I am really pissed off at you. I am. Okay, I am in a very, very fucked up state of mind right now because I have two minds about every, I am completely put down the middle about all of it. I don't know which place of, I just know that I have two different feelings about everything. Are you okay? Yeah, yeah, I mean, I'm kind of a fact, because you know, you could have told me you were married before, you know, you could have told me you were married before. You know, you could have told me you had your kids.
Starting point is 00:55:48 When you did that, I mean. No, I'm past the point of mad. Okay. I forgive you. I forgive you. And I'm willing to work on this with you. During their first few phone calls, Margaret seems committed to the relationship. But after only a few weeks and after realizing that it's pretty hard to find work in a town where
Starting point is 00:56:10 everyone knows you as a murder suspect Margaret began considering her options. Some of those options did not include Terry. Are you moving bad, Zona? I'm thinking. What do you gonna do about me? I said I'd be doing it for us. Uh-huh. Should go and get set up out there. Would you consider coming to North Carolina? Yeah. The only thing that I'm just afraid, like, I mean, going out to Venus is one thing to
Starting point is 00:56:42 have got people. I got connections up here. I don't have anything. You know? Right. Um, baby, could you show a barcass in the job at the restaurant? So what I said? You would live with my mom. Just temporary. As appealing as it was, Margaret decided that she didn't want to move to a state that she had never been in and Live with a 60 something year old woman that she'd never met before I'm not going to Arizona. Where are you going to? I'm not just going to be straight, Margaret. I feel like a fair band is in me.
Starting point is 00:57:29 OK, and I was about to do what I have to do to get myself straight. OK. If I'm in North Carolina, here in Nevada, how are we going to try to escape it? I don't know if I'm going to Nevada. Well, I don't know what's going on. I think you do a bunch of things that are all up in the air, and I'm just trying to make the best of this.
Starting point is 00:57:47 I've always been out of jail for three fucking weeks. And I'm like, everybody out there, you know what I mean? About what they want me to do, or what they need me to do, and what I need to do. I don't even know what I need to do. I just want to make the best of this shit. You should be focusing on, in the whole process, but it's being recorded just focus on your
Starting point is 00:58:09 story. No, no, no. You seem to be focused on yourself and telling me that the way that I need to get set up is to be closer to you. I don't think this is how much I think. I know this is you. Obviously. Oh my God.
Starting point is 00:58:23 Oh my God. Oh my God. Oh my God. Dispirst between their many bickering phone calls were conversations about sex and Terry repeatedly questioned Margaret's fidelity or lack thereof. Oh, did you get my naughty one? Yeah, for a kid I can see you two that were naughty. Oh, crap. I can see you two that were good. Wonderful, I ask you to, when you got your hand there, pull it off the ribbon with some paper and send it to me when you got on it. Ew, you're not P-free.
Starting point is 00:58:56 Yes, I am. You haven't had your Aggies. What? When all for your own. Me when all for my own. I don't know. Grab somebody else and just fuck the hell out of them. No. Would you kill me if you did?
Starting point is 00:59:12 No. Oh, you didn't like that answer. No. I think you're going to find someone falling in love and I'm going to be kicked for the third. No. I really do. Eventually, Margaret gave it the Terry straight. Maybe, and perhaps more than likely, the two of them wouldn't end up together.
Starting point is 00:59:37 Okay, I know you have this picture in your head that like when you get out, you know, we're going to be together and all of this stuff. And I want to assure you of that, that's not something that can be assured. Okay. I just want to say something. I just want to say something. I just want to say something. I just want to say something. I just want to say something.
Starting point is 00:59:52 I just want to say something. I just want to say something. I just want to say something. I just want to say something. I just want to say something. I just want to say something. I just want to say something. I just want to say something.
Starting point is 01:00:00 I just want to say something. I just want to say something. I just want to say something. I just want to say something. I just want to say something. I just want to say something. I just want to say something. I just want to say something. Well, it's your family. You're like, I ain't guaranteed nothing, I ain't saying nothing, you're being my wife. Because there are other fucking derisies in life that might not want to make you understand no matter what I do, no matter what you do, there is nothing that nobody is glad to allow to guarantee anybody, just sitting there making tomatoes on me, when you're fucking off
Starting point is 01:00:20 up. At a certain point, Terry began to suspect that the only reason Margaret was maintaining contact with him was to ensure that he wouldn't talk about certain things. What those specific certain things were, he never outright said. But it's not difficult to make an educated guests. This wasn't the only time that Terry mentioned some experience that he and Margaret had together. Far from it. And after Margaret broke the
Starting point is 01:01:06 news to Terry that she had decided to move to Las Vegas, he really got into it. You know what, I was hoping the last thing that you and I are going to get approved there, I trusted you and the each of us, if you mean that we were never going to separate to each other. People that experience will always stand, don't walk away from each other. But obviously you got some notes on your mind. And it helps to me like you're trying to walk away. By July of 2013, one year since they were arrested, Terry had broken up with Margaret. But after only a few weeks of no contact, the phone calls continued. I'll never allow myself to want somebody the way I love you.
Starting point is 01:02:06 I hate the fact that you love me so much and want to be with me, but yet you pack up and move to Vegas. Terry and Margaret reconciled, at least as much as they could. Even though they no longer considered themselves an item, it was clear that Terry held on to hope that Margaret would come back to him when he got out of prison. You hope I still love you, I'll never stop. Okay. No matter what happens.
Starting point is 01:02:40 Yeah, I just figured like that you didn't maybe because, you know, I'm a reaching whore. You know. I mean that hurts but you know you're gonna do what you're gonna do. People are gonna do what they're gonna do you know. Yeah, well I'm trying. I'm trying to not be a reaching whore and I haven't had sex in like a really long time. Like it's been like two weeks I think. Yeah, you probably will.
Starting point is 01:03:02 I hadn't had sex in two. So. I think you probably will. I have sex. Interestingly, June 6th, the day that Terry says was the last time he had sex, was also the day that Jiren Lockhart was murdered. After a few months went by and many, many emails and phone calls were exchanged between Margaret and Terry. Margaret decided that she'd had enough of Vegas and was headed back home to Louisiana. You know, I'm just tired of all of it. You know, I'm ready to go home.
Starting point is 01:03:35 I'm ready to get my boyfriend to my house. Go home. Go home. I'm going home. I'm going to North Carolina when I get out of here. I know where you're going. So, you know, I just, like, where am I right now? I feel like everything that I know isn't real.
Starting point is 01:03:54 You know, like all the shit about your past or whatever. None of this is real. Whatever it is. I'm just saying, like, all of it is good fucking charade. Right. Well, it ain a good fucking charade right well they don't know fucking charade to meet the time in fucking prison and they know charade to me that the woman i love is been back in fourth and confused for the last fucking year and four or five
Starting point is 01:04:16 months after margaret ready to self to move back to luiziana and terry continued to wait out his sentence the fby and detectives from Mississippi decided to pay Terry a surprise visit. Their hope was that Terry was ready to churn on Margaret and come clean about what the two of them had done to Jaron Lockhart. The night that y'all left the club, we know that y'all left. We don't know you know if if y'all went to a party and then y'all brought her back to New Orleans We don't we don't know what happened after that
Starting point is 01:04:52 it's been a long time but Mar or I never I don't even really remember I Don't even remember being around another thing though I don't even really remember being around them. Well, if it helps, I can tell you what her coworkers told me. They said that y'all had a private party. They said that you and Margaret had offered
Starting point is 01:05:16 for her to go work a private party for y'all. And then y'all left. I don't even remember. To be honest, I don't remember talking to anybody about a part of it. I don't remember anybody being with us. I don't remember going to no parties or nothing. Do you remember going to the club? Well, I mean, obviously we were there. Yeah, obviously. Surveillance footage clearly shows Terry and Margaret leaving the strip club with Jaron and walking several blocks with her.
Starting point is 01:05:49 But just like Margaret, Terry conveniently had no memory of that morning. At the same time, he also had no memory of driving to Mississippi the following night. Well, we know the young with that night, and I'll tell you how. Going down the interstate, when you come across the state line, there's a camera and when you come leaving Mississippi, coming back in Louisiana, there's another camera that takes a license plate picture of your car. We know y'all were in the car going to Mississippi, we know y'all were in the car coming back out of Mississippi. All right, there was sand in the car, be sand. All right, now when took a sample,
Starting point is 01:06:25 right, and submitted that with the sand that was in the car that we collected out of the car, right, and submitted that for comparison. So we know where the sand came from, right, and you got to understand what we're looking at this from, yeah, is we've got these body parts from the girl that washed up right there where that saying came from. Right. You see where I'm going? You see why? Yeah, it looks like man you bad. It does. And I'm just trying to tell you. I don't remember this female.
Starting point is 01:06:57 It's girl. Jen, I don't remember her. And I don't remember her having a no-call with us. I don't remember her and I don't remember her having a no-call of us. I don't remember going to Mississippi. It all sounds like something being made up to me." Unfortunately for Terry, nothing was being made up. Jiren Lockhart's dismembered body parts had washed up on the beaches of Mississippi. And all of the evidence was telling police that Terry speaks and Margaret Sanchez
Starting point is 01:07:25 were responsible. I don't see where you gave yourself any defense. Any, especially with what Margaret say, the evidence. The evidence is going to slay evidence. It's going to slay a doggy. No. Now why? You can explain this and you don't remember nothing and that's how you couldn't have done this or that you're such a great guy that I couldn't have possibly done this
Starting point is 01:07:48 I don't remember what happened, but I'm such a great guy y'all that I don't have to be the only evidence there is His point is pointing it to you guys Okay, if you're gonna let the evidence decide for you guys Please let me advise against that because it's not gonna to go well for you. I know in my soul that I had nothing to do, and I, Margaret, didn't have nothing to do with anything involved. Sorry. It was something. Death, disappearance, murder, whatever it is.
Starting point is 01:08:24 In the end, the detectives didn't get what they wanted, and Terry held firm that he had no memory of Jaron Lockhart. The night she left the strip club with him, or his trip to Mississippi. I think you're missing your opportunity here. No, I'm not. No, I think you are, Terry. I just don't think you understand you are. I think we're done with this interview.
Starting point is 01:08:45 Okay. I apologize and I feel bad for the family and the stuff. What is your mother's name? You don't feel bad. You feel bad. You're going to feel bad if you came out smart to system. I can promise you a fellow you're not going to. Now, make me.
Starting point is 01:09:00 You do not feel bad. I'm not buying that. It's a cut. What you are is a cold-blooded killer. After the detectives left, Terry was very quick to phone Margaret and make her aware of what had happened. And more importantly,
Starting point is 01:09:18 keep her up to date on what was said. I want you to just relax and breathe when I say this, okay? Okay. The FBI and Mississippi just come to talk to me. And they were questioning about that whole thing with that girl. And I told them, I said, look, I said, I don't remember anything. I said, I remember, you know, we drank and we hung around and talked and all that. But when we went home, I said, we didn't take no girl. We didn't get in the girl, got in the car with us, we didn't take no girl. We didn't get a girl got in a car with us.
Starting point is 01:09:46 We didn't take no girl. No, we're none of that happened. After the excitement of this latest police interview died down, Terry went right back to his attempts to manipulate Margaret and continued using the murder that they had committed as leverage to keep her from finding a new man. Can I pretty much bank that you and I will not see each other anymore?
Starting point is 01:10:15 Chris, I couldn't tell you. I mean, I love you. Well, I'm going to bank that we're not going to see each other anymore. Well, I know that I need to take care of me, I need to get situated and take care of my boy and I need to do this. Remember this, okay? If I give you any good advice, we take this. Just know that anybody that comes in your life, maybe somebody they stand in. Other than me. Yeah, that helps me out a whole lot, I appreciate you telling me that. Thank you. I thought I was trying to help.
Starting point is 01:10:55 The manipulation that Terry disguised as help didn't work. And in December of 2013, just a few months before Terry was set to be released, Margaret dropped the bomb on him. I was supposed to be at 40 and forever, and I was never as happy as I thought it'd ever happen. Why are you not going to be? Tony, it's the very least. I was supposed gonna get married. When did you decide to marry this person? Oh, you're married to me, you fucking asshole honey. Sorry to interrupt, but you fucking asshole honey has to be one of my favorite cutesy nicknames
Starting point is 01:11:42 of all time. Fucking corny at asshole, stupid face Stupid faces right up there too. You're married to me. You haven't even let me get out of prison yet. Alright, well let me ask you this. Does he know everything about you? Does he know the whole truth of everything? Oh, yeah!
Starting point is 01:12:04 In case you didn't catch that, Margaret's response was even though Margaret was sorry, even though Margaret was planning to marry someone else. She and Terry did continue to keep in contact for a short time. But then Margaret suddenly went radio silent, and during a phone call with his mom, Terry found out why. of second-degree murder. What? Yeah. Second-degree murder on that girl. What the hell? I told that I was going to have a tour in her. She didn't have an answer machine.
Starting point is 01:12:53 Yeah. So I called her daddy. He told me they bested him about 2 a.m. and took Margaret DeGelon's booster for a second-degree murder. I wonder when they're gonna come and arrest me. I don't know. Will you know they're to come and arrest me. I don't know. Well, you know they're going to come and get me.
Starting point is 01:13:10 Terry was right about that. They did come get him and both he and Margaret were charged with second degree murder to which they both pleaded not guilty. Terry was the first to go to trial and among the many things used against him was his phone and email communication with Margaret during his time in prison. When Margaret told Terry that she was going to marry someone else, Terry was enraged, and that anger anger let him to say some pretty stupid and incriminating things. I hate you for doing that shit, Margaret. I hate you for doing that shit, Margaret. I hate you for doing that shit, Margaret. I hate you for doing that shit, Margaret.
Starting point is 01:14:12 That's the worst thing you could have done right there. I'm sitting here in prison. Keep it you out of prison. And you're going to marry someone else. Are you fucking kidding me? I hate you. I hate you. I hate you.
Starting point is 01:14:28 Hey, you fool. I hate you, fool. I hate you. I hate you. I hate you. I hate you, Margaret. No, no, I'm no, I'm no, I'm no, I'm no, I'm no, I'm no, I'm no, I'm no, I'm no, I'm no, I'm no, I'm no, I'm no, I'm no, I'm no, I'm no, I'm no, I'm no, I'm no, I'm no, I'm no, I'm no, I'm no, I'm no, I'm no, I'm no, I'm no, I'm no, I'm no, I'm no, I'm no, I'm no, I'm no, I'm no, I'm no, I'm no, I'm no, I'm no, I'm no, I'm no, I'm no, I'm no, I'm no, I'm no, I'm no, I'm no, I'm no, I'm no, I'm no, I'm no, I'm no, I'm no, I'm no, I'm no, I'm no, I'm no, I'm no, I'm no, I'm no, I'm no, I'm no, I'm no, I'm no, I'm no, I'm no, I'm no, I'm no, I'm no, I'm no, I'm no, I'm no, I'm no, I'm no, I'm no, I'm no, I'm no, I'm no, I'm no, I'm no, I'm no, I'm no, I'm no, I'm no, I'm no, I'm no, I'm no, I'm no, I'm no, I'm no, I this shit. I'm not going to live with you inside of me for you. Fuck this shit. You want to marry somebody else? Try. Along with this heated exchange, Terry also set Margaret a few emails that didn't help
Starting point is 01:14:58 his chances with a jury. I can't believe you. I stood there and contributed to the choices we made together, and they will never go away. You know the truth between us. And now you are marrying someone else? I want to tell everything, just so you can suffer, like me. You're the only one, though, fry. Not me. I did everything to clean up the mess we made. Remember when you went to work and I had to spring clean?
Starting point is 01:15:29 Well, I saved some things just in case. Remember the boots? Remember the panties with both your juices in them? You forgot the shower we had? Shall I go on? Next time, I go into more detail You can stop this by just being who you said you are my wife If not I plan on setting the record straight and then let's see how life turns out
Starting point is 01:15:59 You have till Monday to convince me you are not going to make the mistake of marrying someone else. I'm ready to go. I don't care anymore. My life is over anyway. I hold the cards. Don't push me. Naturally, Margaret responded to Terry the only way she could and Said that she had no idea what he was talking about. She also suggested that it was probably best if they didn't communicate anymore, but still the communication and the fighting continued. That died. Try to fucking prank me for a fucking soul. And as a kid you blame me for a fucking soul crash.
Starting point is 01:16:47 You blame me for a fucking soul. Well you know what? We're fucking suspects and a goddamn murder and we're going to be that way forever. But you not have a real power over me. I have power over me and what happens to me unfortunately happens to you. Look, I don't see that you see that. I think you think that we're two individuals splitting past here and going on different lines, different separate ways. Oh, we were going to get out. Shut your fucking mouth. If that wasn't bad enough, there was yet another conversation that Terry and Margaret had that didn't play so well for Terry and Court.
Starting point is 01:17:30 If you remember, Margaret and Terry had a dog, which Margaret claimed they had nursed back from Parvo, and during their phone conversations, Parvo apparently appeared to be code for something you know the other thing going through parvo hearing with that parvo okay that was that was so freaking just it was insane and it was top and and
Starting point is 01:18:01 the parvo are like I'm thinking on the same level you are the part of what's the dog right? It was the most intense thing that two people can go through. Right. That was a very intense experience. And you don't walk away from that. Early in our relationship, we didn't walk away and we did what we could to make the situation better. And we worked together to make the problem go away.
Starting point is 01:18:32 It was a very heartening for two people to go through, a very, very heart struggle. And it will live with, it will stay with us forever. I know, I know that something that we will always have. House sweet. If all else fails, at least they can look back on the fond memories of killing a 23-year-old mother and chopping up her body. Terry's trial lasted for four days, and during the course of it, Terry made two big mistakes.
Starting point is 01:19:05 First, he started things out by representing himself, which is always a very, very stupid thing to do, by the way. When it was clear that things weren't really going his way, he relinquished control to his attorney. Then he voluntarily took the stand. And he started crying. He wasn't crying because we were more so, he wasn't crying for Jared. He wasn't crying for himself.
Starting point is 01:19:40 I'm going to do, you know,, you just being a whining baby. The tissue time that fact through a lot of clean ads. I was in here. I mean, he just threw it at it. He said, yeah, very incredibly yourself, you know, don't worry about anybody else. According to Commander Grannon, when Terry was on the stand, the prosecution ripped him to shreds, after which it didn't take long for a jury to render a verdict of guilty. And here's a breakdown of the judge's ruling.
Starting point is 01:20:12 Speaks was handed a life sentence without the possibility of parole for the murder of Lockhart. He received 40 years with hard labor in prison for obstruction of justice. He was also sentenced to 20 years for conspiracy, and all of these sentences are concurrent. After Terry was convicted and sentenced, Margaret decided to change her plea in exchange for a reduced charge of manslaughter. In court today, 32-year-old Margaret Sanchez said she participated in the killing of Jiren Lockhart, and a judge accepted her guilty plea to manslaughter.
Starting point is 01:20:46 In court, Sanchez confirmed she and Speaks convinced Lockhart to lead Temptations Nightclub where Lockhart worked as a dancer, and go to the couple's home in Canter, where they stabbed the young mother to death. Sanchez also admitted helping to cut up Lockhart's body and put it in the golf to cover up the crime. The guilty plea is part of a deal worked out with the blessings of Lockhart's body and put it in the gulf to cover up the crime. The guilty plea is part of a deal worked out with the blessings of Lockhart's family. The judge sentenced her to 40 years, but today was the first time either of them admitted to the murder.
Starting point is 01:21:17 Although Margaret pleaded guilty, she was not required to go into detail in open court, which left one of the biggest questions unanswered. Why? He never really can come to grips with the fact that his personal is just executed because it was so rich that we believe in original sacrifice. Hancock County investigators believe that the motive for murder related to Margaret's interest in black magic are the occult. They theorized that Margaret and Terry wanted to perform a human sacrifice ritual that they believed would magically improve their lives and their relationship.
Starting point is 01:22:13 How did that work out? Dummies. The exact ritual that was allegedly performed isn't entirely clear, but it somehow corresponds with the Venus transition, an astrological event where for several hours the planet Venus can be seen from Earth moving across the Sun. This event generally occurs about every 240 years. The last time there was a Venus transition was June 6th 2012, which is the same day that Jaren Lockhart was murdered. Margaret and Terry even referenced the Venus transition through their emails and phone calls. said you drove out of the lake because you know we're we're seeing them yeah i got a bit of transition all right i asked
Starting point is 01:23:06 i tried felt about that and you like felt about that moment you're like what moment oh that one we want to be in transition all like a poccalistic and shit and i said the moon will be reddish the stars will fall from the sky and yeah totally like a poccalocalyptic and awesome, and I cried.
Starting point is 01:23:29 Given the potential consequences, it's certainly difficult to imagine that anyone would decide to carry out a human sacrifice. But according to Commander Grannon, the real driving force behind what Margaret and Terry did was nothing beyond sheer boredom. The rich one, you know, when his particular house has a logical event to place, and that's when a natural life event is supposed to take place, and I did business. And I did, it didn't matter who it was, I did need someone to place a victim because it's in a bowl. Another and perhaps more practical theory is that when Margaret and Terry proposition
Starting point is 01:24:22 Jaren and the Strip Club, they didn't plan on killing her. Terry and Margaret had a very, let's say, carnal relationship. And it's possible they planned to simply have a threesome that night. But when Margaret saw Terry having sex with Jaren, maybe she became overcome with jealousy. Maybe she snapped, and then maybe she stabbed Jaren in the heart.
Starting point is 01:24:51 She does seem to be that level of crazy. So there's that. Then in an attempt to protect Margaret Terry decided to clean up while she went to work. According to one of the inmates that shared a jail cell with Margaret, when Margaret spoke about her case, this seemed to be exactly what happened. I just heard them talking about the keys. I was sitting there listening. Okay, what was it? If anything, that you heard Margaret's there? I heard a say that if the girl would have cooperated,
Starting point is 01:25:28 not doing a wind-soul, they met the girl at a club that the intentions on was to take the girl from the club and they were gonna have sex with the girl. It didn't go the way that she expected it. And Sarah wound up having sex with the lady, better than he was having sex with Margaret and not an anger and jealousy. Margaret got upset and she said, I'd cut the girl body up and it was an accident.
Starting point is 01:25:55 Occam's Razor, we visited this notion before that the simplest explanation is probably the correct one. An Occam's razor would suggest that the murder of Jiren Lockhart was a result of Margaret's impulsive jealousy. But if that is what happened, it removes the human sacrifice theory and the premeditation, and according to Commander Grannon, that's simply not possible. No, no, no. They've never cleaned that up. You can't keep it in the command hop side,
Starting point is 01:26:32 and out to clean it up. Somebody can stand, it's bloody. I get you to clean it up. It'd be blood from moving all over the wall, that being just a level of something to the mattress, I mean, get away. If you're not ready, you're not cleaning it up. Not that well.
Starting point is 01:26:47 Just not after. If we do accept the human sacrifice theory, it also raises some other questions, like, whose idea was it? Who was the instigator and why would the other person agree to go along with it? I think I've got the longest job she's done in the choir here. the other person agree to go along with it. The event that Commander Grannon is referring to is, of course, the murder and dismemberment of Addy Hall, which is assumed to have been committed by her boyfriend, Zach Bowen,
Starting point is 01:27:28 who later committed suicide. Margaret was good friends with both Zach and Addy, and before Margaret was arrested and charged with second degree murder, ABC released an episode of their DocuSeries Final Witness, which covered the Zach and Addy's story. When this episode aired, the detectives that were investigating the Jaren Lockhart murder were shocked to find that Margaret was one of the main talking heads.
Starting point is 01:28:00 During her ABC interview, Margaret described what Zach's state of mind must have been when he decided to dismember his girlfriend at a haul. I can imagine just shock. What am I going to do? Get rid of the body. That would be anybody's first thought. Anybody's first thought after impulsively committing a murder would be to hide the body? I don't know if that would be anybody's first thought, but regardless, this quote certainly peaked the interest of the detectives that were investigating the Jaron Lockhart murder. I know that Margaret was good friends with a girl atdy Hall. Margaret, in her own words, and in interview, what she said to the camera was, if somebody had died and you would kill them, he did what anybody would do, he would try to find a way to get rid of the body. Whether or not Margaret was involved in what happened to Addy and Zach
Starting point is 01:29:01 is a great mystery. The extreme circumstances and similarities between the murders of Adi Hall and Jaren Lockhart are certainly hard to ignore. After all, most people will go through their entire life without having any association with the dismembered corpse. Thank God. But somehow Margaret Sanchez was linked to two of them. There is, however, no evidence that ties Margaret to Adi's death. Could it all just be a coincidence?
Starting point is 01:29:40 According to Commander Grannon, not likely. She clearly wasn't in my family's residence. According to Commander Grannon, not likely. Going back to the question of who was the instigator and killing Jaren, and why would the other person go along with it? A human sacrifice that relates to an astrological event certainly seems more up Margaret's alley. As for Terry, he was clearly desperate to maintain a relationship with Margaret, and likely saw this murder plot as a way to bind them together forever.
Starting point is 01:30:26 This is, of course, just an educated guess. In a fool's errand to hopefully get some concrete answers, we actually did reach out to Terry and Margaret at their respective Louisiana correctional facilities. Both of them declined our invitation to do an audio recorded interview, but we did learn some interesting things, as we emailed back and forth with them. First, according to Margaret, she and Terry no longer communicate regularly, but they do hear from each other from time to time through third parties. And there seems to be no ill will
Starting point is 01:31:05 between them. Margaret told us that she remains grateful for having known Terry, and Terry still refers to Margaret as his wife. As expected, Margaret denied having any involvement in the death of Addy Hall, and express that she is extremely offended by the accusation, which, you know, is fair. There is no evidence that she had anything to do with Addy's murder, and she was good friends with her, Anzac. If she didn't have anything to do with what happened to them, it probably hurts pretty bad to have that suspicion hanging over her. With regards to the murder and dismemberment of Darren Lockhart, Terry staunchly maintained his innocence while messaging with us, and Margaret would not provide a straight answer one way or another. She did, however, tell us that she was on medication that was not conductive to her best interests
Starting point is 01:32:08 when she signed her plea agreement. But the most notable, yet unsurprising thing about our conversations with them is that both Margaret and Terry clearly carry around a lot of self-pity. Or perhaps a better way to say it is, selfish pity. Margaret especially took a lot of time to complain about her life in prison, and neither one of them ever expressed any remorse or regret for what they did, even when given the chance. In fact, when asked if they would say something to Jaren's family or her daughter, both Margaret and Terry became very defensive and hostile. After being posed this question, Margaret even insulted you.
Starting point is 01:32:58 Yes, you, the audience. Presumably because you listened to a true crime podcast, she called you vampires, by the way, who thrive off the hurt and pain of others. It's hard to believe that she wouldn't recognize the irony of a murderer judging other people for merely listening to stories about murder. But it's pretty obvious that Margaret's lunacy knows no bounds. As you do listen to this particular story, you might find yourself wrapped up in Margaret's madness, Terry's attempts to manipulate Margaret or the tumultuous relationship between
Starting point is 01:33:41 them. At least that was our experience when putting this all together. But if there's anything you should be focused on, it's that the life of a beautiful young and kindhearted mother was taken in one of the most horrific and senseless ways possible. You know, you hear, you only hear like, oh, that was senseless. Somebody died or they killed. We had house senseless or how cool that was or whatever. But this is just cruel and senseless because it gets. Let's just kill somebody to be killed. We can't bear this picture on a wall forever.
Starting point is 01:34:18 Actually, just to just reason it. And we had such a connection to her because we felt so bad. In fact, we were still working on it two years later. If it took ten years, we'd still been working on it. We wouldn't have let it get off. As the detectives investigated this case, they came to know Jaren through her family. And many friends, some of whom were strippers. That's where I was so full of lines that don't think like you and I, we don't know what's
Starting point is 01:35:07 going to make a pass that, get your pass that threshold, or be in a human being, and be in a monster. Although Jaren's line of work may have been a contributing factor and while she was chosen to be murdered and dismembered, it's certainly not a reason to blame Jaren for what happened to her. And all their own if you could do that. So I mean like much you almost had a coming towards. It's not true. She was a mother to the daughter. She was important in people's lives. Now you not believe the friends and the people out for her when I was over it. I mean, he was obvious that she cared and she was very so good. He was just so obvious that
Starting point is 01:36:02 the car parts of she was. We couldn't bring Jared back, but I tell you know, family couldn't have been more appreciative of the closure. Above all, 23-year-old Jared was a cherished friend to many, a beloved sister and daughter, and perhaps most heartbreaking of all, an adoring mother to a three-year-old girl. For reasons they still refused to admit, Margaret Sanchez and Terry Speaks came along and ruthlessly removed Jaren from these people's lives. Then they desecrated her body by chopping her to pieces and through Jaren away, like garbage. Tonight those who came to say a final farewell to Lockhart don't want her to be remembered by how she died, but by who she was. She loved life. She was the most energetic by, she would give a person the shirt off her back.
Starting point is 01:37:06 Jaren's horrific death is when her family refuses to explain to the three-year-old daughter she left behind. But when she's old enough, this is what her grandmother will tell her. That her beautiful, my mother, that her mother loves her, would all hurt. By all accounts, Jaren Lockhart was a very giving young woman and a devoted mother. One of her high school friends described Jaren as, quote,
Starting point is 01:37:33 a good mom that wanted to give her daughter everything she could, end quote. Jaren was murdered in 2012. Today, her daughter Riley would be about 13 or 14 years old, and we certainly hope that Riley knows just how much her mother loved her. And while it's likely a small consolation, her mother's killers are exactly where they deserve to be.
