Hello and welcome to Table Manners, Season 19, Mum.
That doesn't mean we've been going for 19 years.
No, but it does mean we've been going for 10 years, I think, really.
I feel like we've been going 119 years today.
Okay, well, this leads us to Lenny is having her hip-hop.
Hip-hop.
Hip-hop.
I'm not doing hip-hop dancing.
I'm having a hip-hop.
And they do serve wine in the rehabilitation centre, so you'll be okay.
That was the lone reason for choosing it.
Your eyes are sparkly today, Lenny.
I don't know. It was a mistake.
I like it. It looks fab.
It looks fab.
Okay, fine.

We are so excited for our season opener.
We have the phenomenal Kelly Rowland, who you will know from the most iconic girl group,
Destiny's Child, or her illustrious solo career with bangers such as dilemma when love takes
over.
Motivation as my husband when I put it on this morning knew all the words, forgot that he was an R&B
boy.
Oh, and no matter what you do.
That's dilemma.
Oh, is that dilemma?
Also, she's just been announced as the Voice UK's new judge.
And?
And the new face of Olay.
She is gorgeous.
Your grandma would have been so thrilled
Oh my God
To meet any ambassador of OLE
Oh my God, she used to leather it on
OLAOLEA
OLEA
Kelly Rowland is coming on
And she's coming on at
Kind of an odd time for food
So you've done something quite light, haven't you?
Yeah, I've just made a salad
A peach and chicken salad
Which I think I did for Rob Delaney
It's an Nigel Slater, Guardian recipe
Yeah
Really good
Yeah
And the peaches are still good
Or nectarines is still good.
The peaches are great.
They were just right today.
And then you've done some.
Oh, I've done a raspberry poke cake.
What does that mean?
I poked holes in the cake that I made.
Oh, to get like cereal.
To get the raspberry in.
Yeah.
That's hope it works.
Well, it looks beautiful.
I hope so.
How was your summer, mum?
Well, it was fab, really.
I was away for nearly seven weeks.
Yeah.
In Greece.
Yeah.
And I loved it.
It was beautiful.
all our favourite people there.
And the man who worked in Platonos Square...
Asked you out on a date?
No, he asked me to sit and have a drink of either coffee, wine or water.
Yeah.
And I said, oh, I'm a bit busy.
I couldn't imagine what I was going to do by sitting talking to me.
You thought that he just wanted you to buy Geras?
Yeah.
Right.
And he suddenly said, I just love your podcast, which was so strange.
Great.
He's like, you know, he's not the youngest man in the world.
I've been seeing him in Platon or Square for about 30 years.
He loves the podcast.
Yes, Sue.
Yes, Sue.
We are so thrilled to be back.
We are excited about the year ahead, wherever it takes us.
We are potentially planning something exciting next year.
And we are thrilled to have Kelly Rowland as an opener.
I mean, she's a huge star, international.
Is she very tall?
She looks tall.
I think she looks tall.
Yeah.
And she's got like never-ending legs.
Yeah, that's what I think.
But maybe Beyonce's just a little short one.
I don't know.
I'm not sure.
What do we think?
She's 5-8.
Oh, is she's not that tall then?
That's tall?
That isn't that tall, darling.
Cindy Crawford's 5-9.
Oh, is she?
Yeah, that's tall.
I think 5-8 is a glorious height.
Kelly Rowland coming up on Table Manors.
Kelly Rowland, as I live and breathe.
You are radiant
It must be that oil
Serra.
It must be
I'm wanting it
Why do I call it oilet?
It used to be oil of alet
It used to be oil of olay
Yeah
That's when my grandma used to like slather on
And the smell I can remember
Is it the same smell?
It's changed a bit
It's definitely evolved
Since me looking at it
On my great aunt's counter
You know what I mean
That's where I first got
my first, I say taste of oil of Olay.
So you're right.
It used to be oil of Yule.
Yes.
It was with the U.
Was it?
So in the States, it was oil of Olae.
And here it was oil of U.
And then they changed it.
My mom never got to grips with the O instead of the U.
Wow.
So she always used to say oily Uly.
And that's why you just said it.
That's so interesting.
Very, very cool.
I'm wonderful.
You flew in this morning.
I did.
You poor thing.
I'm fine, y'all.
Because there were all these flight cancer, like, it was mad.
Oh, no, that's exactly what happened.
And it was like last minute, but it did give me some time, some extra time with my babies.
So that was cool.
Where did you fly from?
Where do you live?
Los Angeles.
Okay.
Yeah.
How old are babies now?
11 and 5.
I can't even believe I have an 11-year-old child.
It's so wild because he's like almost my height and his voice is starting to drop.
Oh, cool.
And I'm looking at his.
little face mature and change right before my eyes.
And it just lets me know how precious time is.
I hear.
Oh, my heart is beating a little bit harder, just thinking about time
because I don't take it for granted,
especially being a mother and watching or being able to have the opportunity
to watch them grow as a blessing.
But at least you've got the five-year-old.
You've still got like, you know, in the way of that you can still baby,
I baby my five-year-old so much.
I do.
I'm like, the 10-year-old, I'm like, get out of my bed, the five-year-old.
I'm like, you can stay, you can stay.
It's so unfair.
She's a big boy toddler.
I mean, he thinks he's a big guy, but like, yeah, so does mine.
He thinks he's a big boy.
And you know what?
I'll give him that, but I want him to be my baby.
And he just started kindergarten.
And when he started, he was like, bye, mom.
And left and went into the rest of the.
Well, that's good.
Yeah.
Oh, no, it was great.
It was great.
But I was like, literally cried on the campus.
As soon as a teacher closed the door, I was like, I had these big glasses on.
Thank God I had these glasses on.
But I cried like a baby, like a baby.
How long are you away from them this trip?
Seven days.
Okay.
It's not bad.
It's not bad.
It's not bad.
So who's looking after them?
Your husband?
My nanny and my husband is.
Yeah.
God bless a great mommy.
Man, I'm so blessed.
Yes, absolutely.
So the podcast, we ask you lots of things about
food and food memories.
I mean, there's so much, I'm so excited to have you because, I'm excited to be you.
Well, honestly, when I've told my friends that we've got you on, they're like, no, this is
huge.
Because Destiny's Childs was such a huge part of my kind of education in R&B and just like vocals.
And then you're incredible.
You're incredible.
Thank you.
But let's talk about you, you were born in Atlanta.
Mm-hmm. Born in Atlanta, raised in Texas.
Okay. And is that where, in Houston, you're in, so where, do you have a kind of a tie to both of them and is like culinary? What's their like food tie to both?
I mean, the food tie to both is, you know, of course, very southern, southern roots. I'd say comfort, comfort foods from the mac and cheeses to the fried chickens to the rice.
and peas to the mashed potatoes, all those things, yeah.
So who was around the dinner table?
What was a memorable dish from your childhood that maybe your parents were cooking?
A memorable dish, oh, my mom could really just make the most beautiful fried chicken with
mashed potatoes and English peas, actually.
Oh, little petit-poise?
Yes, it was my favorite.
She'd probably drenched them in butter and a bit of salt.
And it was so good.
But every time I saw it on the table, I was excited.
So when you do your fried chicken, do you dip it in something first?
No.
So it's just fried without flour or breadcrumbs?
No, no, it's with flour.
Okay, you put flour, egg and flour?
Yeah, egg and flour.
And she seasoned it to perfection.
She let it like, you know, sit in all its greatness.
And then she would drench it in the egg and flour and fry it.
Yeah.
And it was ready when it whirls to the top.
Are you good at it?
No.
I'm not good at fried chicken at all.
I'm good at fish.
Okay.
I will bake a chicken.
Yeah.
And steak.
I do a steak pretty good.
Okay.
Tell me how you do your steak.
So my steak, I will salt it and let it sit overnight.
Oh, the night?
Overnight.
What cut are you having?
We like a filet in our house.
It's like a nice little filet mignon.
And because we get it from the butcher.
And what else?
Like a little strip as well.
What, like a sirloin strip?
Yeah.
Okay, got it.
Yeah.
And so we take that.
And then I will butter the pan a bit.
Put it in there on a like highish heat.
Let it do a nice little sear.
No, I don't know.
I see it and cook it and flip it over.
But I like mine pink.
Me too.
I'm like it.
So how many minutes are you doing on either side, Kelly Rowland?
It depends.
Like, I think it's like three to five.
Yeah, three.
Okay.
Yeah.
And how long do you let it rest for?
Oh, five.
Okay.
Yeah.
That's all about the rest, isn't it?
It's all about the rest.
Do you cover it when you're resting it?
No, should I cover it?
I don't know.
No, I don't cover it when it rest.
I just like watch it, but I do love to bast it.
Then what you could, like, when you put the garlic and all,
the yumminess in there.
And what, do you have with fries or mashed potato?
Salad or spinach.
Oh, God.
Well, for my boys, I do mashed potatoes for sure.
My kids did, we had mashed potato last night.
Only one of my children ate it.
My children are so weird about mashed potato.
Really drives me mad.
What do they do?
Having it out of this.
They're just fuss pots.
I've never heard of a fuss pot, but I like it.
Like, absolutely, I'm like, I've got gravy.
I've got a sauce pot.
There's a sausage there. You did gravy? Yeah, delicious. Yeah. Thanks. Um, I think different gravy to you though. No, but still is gravy. That's, that's time. That's a midweek meal. You are. Do you know what I mean? Gangster. No, I love you. But anyway, didn't bloody eat it. So, okay, state. So if we were coming around to yours, would it be state that you would be cooking us? It would probably be salmon. Okay, how do you do your salmon? Um, I just learned salmon. So I'm still actually, actually, no, I wouldn't do it because I'm still learning. I'm going to try to impress you.
So, yeah, I'd probably do salmon.
I do mashed potatoes.
But I'd probably do a whipped sweet potato too.
Oh, yeah.
I like whipped sweet potato.
Yeah, I do whipped sweet potato.
Do you put marshmallows on?
Only at Thanksgiving.
Only at Thanksgiving.
That is correct.
Yeah.
Do you think people still do dinner parties anymore?
Yes, I do.
We do dinner parties all the time.
I go to dinner parties all the time.
And I love a good playlist.
Oh, wow.
Okay, hit us because that's one of our questions.
What's playing in the background?
I mean, what's playing?
There's Marvin Gay playing.
There's Donnie Hathaway.
There's Stephen Wonder.
There's, yes, there's Earthwinter Fire.
There's jazz.
There's Mous Davis.
There's hip hop.
There's everything.
Like, we have a playlist call, we're the blessed rest.
And it's like one that I just made for our house.
Like whenever we're just chilling on a nice day, it's quiet.
But we got music playing.
I want to swap you.
If you want to give me your playlist, I've got a family kitchen playlist.
Yes.
That is like, I like cooking on a Sunday.
And it's like gentle, beautiful, smoky Robinson's on there.
So if you fancy doing a playlist swap, I'd be really happy.
Did you know, Stevie Wonder's coming to London to do songs in the Key of Life?
Oh, what?
The 50th anniversary.
Oh my God.
Yeah, the 50th anniversary of songs in the Key of Life.
No, I think it's Royal Festival.
It might be Royal Festival.
It's going to be the most impossible to get them.
No, we're going to try.
Okay.
That's right.
We should get him on the pod.
Oh, I'd love it.
Tommy!
Right.
Oh my God.
Okay.
He still sings the same as he sang when he was young.
It's one of the few performers that have got older and their voices not changed.
I think he's fab.
Do you know him?
Yes.
Have you ever been into a dinner party with Steve Mounder?
Yes.
Is he good fun?
Because he's a great mimic, isn't he?
He has one of the.
the most amazing sense of humors.
Yeah.
I've ever experienced in my life.
Ever, ever.
So what is he just like busing jokes all the time and just making everyone laugh?
He's, it's just kind of, it flows.
Like literally, I'm speechless anytime I'm around Stevie Wonder.
Is he one of your ultimat?
Yes.
He's literally on my Mount Rushmore.
So who were you, when you were young, before girls time, like, like, who were you listening to?
Was Stevie one of the voices that you...
Stevie, Whitney Houston.
Funny enough, the Bee Gees, Clark's sisters.
Who else?
That's good.
Yes, yes, yes.
Yes, baby face.
I mean, yeah.
Yeah.
I need to know because I'm going on tour in a few weeks.
Yes.
And I just got my knee checked because I was worried that it was even meniscus or ITB.
Like, you know when you're like, I'm about to do some choreo?
You know about choreo.
Yes.
Do you still run and sing the whole set?
I have to.
On a treadmill.
Yes, because if I don't.
You're still doing Matthew Knowles approach.
Yes, because here's the thing.
Yeah.
You know what the scariest thing is to me to be on stage and I'm out of breath and other people can hear.
I know.
I know.
I know.
I know.
Like petrified.
Just get in my heart rate of.
Okay.
Yeah.
Just be able to.
Yes.
Like my vocal coach puts me on the treadmill.
speeds it up and then she slows it down and then I have to sing.
I love that she does that.
Then, but I'm still walking a brisk pace.
She's really hardcore.
Well, how much do you think I can achieve in four weeks?
Oh, a lot.
Yes.
Okay, fine.
You shock yourself.
I'm bad at running.
I ain't Harry Styles.
Do you see how he's doing like mini marathon every night?
Is he?
Oh, have you not seen it?
It's like he's got a running track on his stage.
Oh, no.
And he just runs.
And I swear it so he can just get his final.
But he's our soul twill off, so it's fine.
He can...
Do you feel like, and this is not because as a woman who is 41, nearly 42,
and we're talking about Stevie's voice and how it still sounds amazing.
And I do feel like, and I don't know if you agree.
I think your voice is amazing, darling.
But I have to work harder at it.
You do.
You do.
I agree with that.
I'm doing more vocal training than I've ever done.
And I don't know whether it's just another thing that women are blessed with.
We get the bloody, we get periods, we get the bloody, we get the bloody, we get,
hormonal changes.
All of it.
Yes, especially after children.
My high end left a bit.
Oh, really?
Yes.
Well, did you get deeper rich a voice?
Yes.
Yes.
Have you ever changed the key?
Absolutely.
Yeah, and so soon me.
Yes, and I don't care.
I still want to, I want it to be great and I want to really feel like I'm in,
I'm owning the moment instead of being anxious for the note that I'd be anxious for.
I hear you.
You know what I mean?
Yeah, because the worst bit is anticipating it and then you tense up.
Yes.
So if you have the freedom and you've been working on it all this time, then yeah, I don't, yeah.
I mean, you know, you're now the voice, UK, one of the coaches.
And so I guess you're perfect for this because you've been doing it since you're about five years old.
Yeah, I still love it.
Are you moving to London there?
No, I'm here like part-time, though.
Okay.
I love it here.
Do you?
I do.
What do you love about that?
It's very nostalgic for me.
It just reminds me of like my first time over here and that was how old was I, 15, 16 years old?
What were you doing?
The Top of the Pops and stuff like that.
It was so great.
Sorry.
I was sorry.
But it was so much fun.
And I just remember coming into a whole new world and what that was like for a southern girl like me
whose family has never stepped foot outside of the United States of America.
I just thought that that was just the coolest thing ever.
And it is, you know?
Wait, I have another question for tour.
So what else do you do to prepare for tour?
I cut down on the drinking.
Uh-huh.
So I do think moderation.
So if I'm going to maybe have like a glass of red wine at the weekend and that's okay.
But I mean, I've just come off like summer holidays where it's been like, cheers, you know.
Yes, yes, yes.
And I do so much tube work with my straws.
Yes.
Yes.
Because it's a much more gentle.
It feels amazing.
It's like a massage.
Yeah, yeah.
I also.
Was I not to finish your sin is.
This is ourself.
Oh, don't know.
So, and then I also, what's my bond thing?
The your bong thing.
My bong, oh, the Dr. Nelson's inhaler for the steam.
Do you have one of those?
Yes, I do.
It looks like you're getting high.
Just, yes.
Yes.
It's just the steam.
And then also I've got a really good, if you need one when you're here,
but I don't know how much singing you're going to be doing it.
Work like a larynge or massage?
Yeah, the most amazing.
It's great, isn't it?
Babe, I will throw money at the problem.
I agree.
So I do that.
I'm, like, really, like, obsessed with it because, like, so much clarity comes.
Does it make you feel like you're going to gag?
No.
It's really painful, though, and, like, the buckles.
It's like, they go in there.
You don't like that part?
No, I don't like that part.
Am I a weirdo?
I love it.
I'm like, okay, 50 shades.
I'm sorry.
I'm sorry.
I'm also obsessed with.
with following Broadway singers.
Are you?
And what they pack.
Uh-huh.
So loads of hydration sachets.
I'm obsessed with a hydration sachet.
Yes.
Um, what else am I doing?
Yeah, like honey and ginger.
The little steam pods for the shower.
What?
Yes, they're these like,
eucalyptus pies that you put in the shower.
And then like you inhale those.
That's amazing.
Really?
Would you do that poster show?
I do it before and after a show.
And I also do like a cool down, a vocal cool down.
Because the larynx is like just dancing so high up
And then I just like to do
Like just to bring it back down
Yeah, it's all kind of like
This is like vocal and linguics
Yes
Hmm
Yeah
I know
But it's like
It's like
It's a good backstage
I know
I know
But by the way
My friends will come with me
After I've done with the show
I'm they're like
You want to take something
It's like so strange
but it is, it's great and it's worth it.
And it shows it like we still have a respect for it.
Oh my God, totally.
So even though like I love these other artists that you're talking about,
but like we wanted to preserve our voice.
Like it really is a priority for us.
Absolutely.
And then I meet Shaka Khan who came on this.
Oh my gosh.
She makes it look so easy.
But also, first time I met her, she had a fag in her mouth like that.
And she's going like that.
And I met there with my vocal coach looking really uncumcure.
like hi you're a really big inspiration for me hi and she's literally like up for all the why
yes she's like literally you're gonna go so i'm like you know she can do it like that and then i'm
she also uses baby oil on her face does she she won't be the ole ambassador
man i've got her skin is great her skin is amazing her skin is great but that shocked me too
the first time i saw her do that she's like oh baby yes you come into the show yes that's great
That's great. Here we go. And then she gets to the stage. To the Lema, God, woman.
And she hits it, and it's so easy. I'm going. And the clarity, I know.
Oh, like, how did you just do that?
Jesse, Cesaria Avora smoked on stage. I mean, I'm sure Billy Holiday did too, but right.
But it must be like a muscle memory. Right? It's a muscle memory.
Should I get some food going?
Whilst mum makes some of the food, we're having some.
I mean very healthy, light.
Yes.
It's a chicken salad.
Love.
With peach.
Yes.
And kind of mint.
Oh, and peaches.
Yeah.
So it's light, juicy, delicious.
Okay.
Because, you know, it's a weird time of the day.
And I'm sure you've probably got plans later and you don't know what time.
I mean, what time is it for you now?
I don't even know.
It doesn't even matter.
You're so professional.
It doesn't even matter.
You're such a pro.
Thank you.
I'm excited.
Chicken and peaches?
It will be delicious.
Okay.
I believe you.
Because it's this brilliant chef called Nigel Slater.
who is one of our gods here.
So, yeah.
So whilst you're in London, we're doing the voice,
being an Ole ambassador,
congratulations on that.
Thank you.
That's like a new big thing.
It's very cool.
Yes.
It's gorgeous.
Can you tell me about your skin regime, actually?
Yes.
Because, like, what's your morning and evening routine?
Morning and evening routine is definitely like my Olegs.
Of course.
We're super wash.
So you start with the wash.
Oh, definitely.
with the wash in the morning.
So I start with a wash in the morning.
I do my serum, my super serum.
Yeah.
I do my cream.
And what else do I do?
I like a nice little like rose water spray.
Oh, me too.
As well.
Gorgeous.
Yeah.
It's very similar to the evening time.
Yeah.
Wow, this is beautiful.
Mom, this looks delicious.
It smells amazing.
Yes, it does.
It's chicken with peaches and mint and basil and a kind of,
chili spring onion sauce.
Just help yourself, please.
Would you like to help yourself?
Or shall I either or?
Well, I can help herself, don't know.
You help yourself because I'll like your face.
And do you.
And start thinking about your last supper.
My last supper?
You're going to a desert island for a very, very long time.
Did you get any chicken there?
No, I'm about to get me some.
Good.
And you have a starter, a main.
a dessert and a drink of choice.
So have a think.
Okay.
You can have something.
A drink of choice?
Yeah.
Well, drinks.
You can do drinks if you want.
Some people have done full days of food.
So, you know.
Days?
You've got artistic license to do whatever you like.
Just do whatever you want.
Don't call me a piglet, okay?
No.
What are you talking about?
I want.
It's good.
Okay.
Good.
That's delicious.
It's a good salad.
It's so great when the salad is so good.
I'm slightly dancing now.
That's so good.
You're so sweet.
I am going to need that last supper off you, babe.
Okay, last supper.
Okay, last supper.
Starter, Maine, hood, drink of choice.
Last supper.
We'll start with, I do love a great salad.
Okay, what's in the salad?
I'm going to say a Greek salad.
Okay, delicious.
I love a Greek salad.
Like, I can eat it all day every day.
Have you holidayed in Greece?
I need to.
You do.
I've only done it maybe once or twice, but I need to.
By the last, by the two weeks in, you're like, I think I don't need the Greek salad today.
I don't know.
I've literally eaten Greek salad for like days of the time.
Let's see, what else?
For my main, here's a truth.
Yeah, great.
Like a cheeseburger.
But where are you getting your burger from?
Not in and out.
No, no, I didn't know, ma'am.
I do have for an in and out.
But it would be...
Can I get you some water?
No, I'm fine.
Okay, I'm just...
I've drinks so much.
I'm fine.
Okay, you're like, okay, fine.
I'm going to say...
I went to a friend of mine's house
and their chef made the most exquisite burger I've ever had in my life.
What?
You were so good about it.
It was juicy.
it had it was like cooked to perfection like the middle was like not raw but pink yes ma'am and it was the most
beautiful piece of lettuce on there the most beautiful tomato the onions were caramelized the butter the bread
the bun was buttered it was like a fresh brioch loaf that they made it was crazy and the cheese was
gooda oh i love guita oh and it was like a spicy something at the bottom I had a
just the right amount of ketchup and the most perfect amount of mustard.
And I took one bite and just salivated it.
I was like, oh my gosh, it was so loud.
I was like, did you taste this?
Talking to my husband.
And it was so good.
And it was like the most amazing French fries to match.
So that.
Who's the chef?
Yeah, who's the chef?
I don't know.
Oh, my God.
Can you go back to this friend's house?
Yes.
And ask for the chef to make this.
We'll ask if they still have the same chef for sure because I was like, they've made it, I've had it twice.
What did you say, listen, I'm coming over and I want that burger.
Yes, the second time.
Is it Beyonce's chef?
No.
Okay, fine.
This sounds great that you can go and require, that's probably quite a good thing.
If your friend has a chef, then you can say, listen, I loved what he made the other day.
Yes.
Can I come back over?
Exactly.
Yeah.
Okay.
So you're going for that bird.
Yes, I'm going for that burger.
What are you drinking?
What are you drinking?
So I'm a very simple girl and I recently stopped drinking.
I'm going to say, but in my heyday, I was a wine girl.
Like a white wine.
Okay.
Pardon me, a French Montresche wine.
It was a French Montresche.
It was delicious.
Yes, it was delicious.
Like delicious.
But you stopped drinking.
Do you feel good?
for no drink?
I do.
I really do.
Somebody like was just breaking it down to me and I was, I just tried to see what a week was like.
And it was like, oh, I'll go to two weeks.
Next time I knew it was like six months and I had had a drink.
And I was like, oh, I like this feeling.
It works.
Have you found kind of a good substitute?
What do you drink now, like when you're out?
Are you kind of having a tonic water?
Are you just doing a water?
Have you found like...
I'm not.
Yeah.
Are you a, are you?
I'm a mocktail guy now?
I'm definitely a mocktail girl.
Only thing is that has so much sugar, but I'm like, eh, who cares?
Yeah.
You know?
Mm-hmm.
Okay, so...
Mm-hmm.
Have you got a sweet...
Oh, you've got a sweet tooth.
Really?
I've heard about this peach cobbler.
Peach cobbler is great.
Okay.
But when you find the right chocolate cake...
Okay.
And it's the perfect amount of sweetness, the perfect amount of saltiness is not too sugary.
I'll have chocolate cake every day if I could.
Really?
That just wouldn't be me.
I love chocolate cake.
I love chocolate, period.
Is it on, is it like, so if you see it on the menu, you're getting it?
Anything with chocolate and the desserts, you're getting it.
Yes.
I actually get a couple of desserts.
I love that.
I get a couple.
You've got to have an opinion.
Yeah, I agree.
I used to like it when there was a trolley and you could choose.
Mm-hmm.
You don't get that.
anymore.
You don't?
No.
You sometimes do.
Oh, fashion places.
Bring back the trolley.
I know.
Bring back the trolley.
So have you ever made a good chocolate cake?
No.
You should find a good recipe and then you can do it for birthday cakes.
I should.
I mean, if you can be asked.
For the first, I told my husband it was a while back.
This woman used to make chocolate cake.
And she used to charge an obscene amount for chocolate cake.
And it was the most I've ever paid for a cake.
And it was just a simple cake.
Yes.
How did you find out about this chocolate cake?
She just made it at a party or something.
And I'll never forget.
I just wanted another one.
And I had my assistant at the time call her and ask her to make the cake.
And when she told her how much it was, I was like, you have got to be kidding me.
I'm not doing that.
10 minutes later I said, call her.
I'm just going to get the cake.
It was ridiculous.
Do you think she raised the prices because she knew how much you wanted that cake?
Maybe.
What do you as a family do for celebrations like birthdays?
Do you go out for dinner?
Do you have dinner at home?
Do you have a party?
We do both.
Right.
We go out to dinner.
And what's the kid's favorite?
Chinese?
The titan love sushi.
Sushi.
Everyone likes sushi children now.
Love sushi.
So he loves sushi and Noah loves pasta.
And he said, what did he recently say?
He said, I love pasta.
And he loves steak.
Is this the five-year-old?
Yes.
Okay, Noah.
The five-year-old loves steak.
The mature palate.
I know.
And their Titan loves sushi.
But he loves to go to Omikaze and just let, like they just bring him whatever.
What's her macas?
Where you basically don't know what you'll get.
Getting next.
Not Yosushi.
Not like where it goes round.
Do they have that in the States,
yo sushi?
I don't think we do.
So we have it here and it's on a big kind of turntable
and it just keeps going round and you pull a dish off.
Didn't it used to be at like Herods or something?
Yeah.
Is it still there?
I don't know.
No, I don't think so.
Sorry.
I want to know about, you say you've got this,
bomb memories of being in London.
You were here as a teenager.
Are there any memorable meals from those early times in London?
Yes, it was the first time I tried sushi.
Oh, really?
We went to Nobu.
What's the one?
Park Lane.
We went to Nobu Park Lane.
It was the very first time we tried sushi.
And I remember I was kind of like the one who would try everything in the group.
And so we were so nervous.
You know, we'd like some country girls.
We'd like, we know we'd like our food cooked.
so we get in there and so we're sitting down and the label is ordering all this food in and so next
thing we knew like the yellow tail comes to the table and the girls look at me and they're waiting
for me to give them the nod to try it and sure enough like I tasted it it was delicious I was like
it so everybody tries it so we did it like that that was my first experience with sushi but it was
so great so you start here with sushi so everything else is going to have a really
tough time. That was delicious. Oh good. Do you want to mop up a bit? Are you okay? That was so good.
Well, we have some cake for you as well, so in case you need it. It's not chocolate, but it looks
delicious. She's told me I'd have made chocolate. Do you want a cup of tea? A cup of tea sounds
delightful. Yeah? Yeah. How do you take your cup of tea? Just blank. Honey. Oh, okay, black.
What kind of tea do you have? Just English breakfast. Oh, no worries. You don't like it.
What tea do you like? I don't like English breakfast tea.
What do you like then?
Just mint.
Mint?
We could do a little fresh mint for you.
I've got fresh mint there so you could have fresh mint with water.
Okay, Diva.
I have tried English breakfasties so many times.
I have really tried.
Listen, well done to try.
Mum, that looks amazing.
It looks so great.
It's called a raspberry poke cake, which is popular.
in America apparently.
Okay.
Do you know about a poke cake?
No.
But you poke it in and you put the raspberries.
You know, you knew.
Well, I'm like, I'm trying to be smart.
So you kind of.
I didn't know.
I thought she was saying pokey and I was like,
it's your cup.
There's fresh mint in there.
So let's hope it works.
Thank you.
It looks great, Mom.
It does.
Let's hope.
So tell me about this fried peach cobbler that I've heard you love.
Is it a fried peach cobbler?
So my mom used to, um,
Yeah, it's worked.
You got it?
Good.
Well done, Mom.
It's to make these little fried peach cobblers.
And I don't know how she made them.
I actually have a recipe book that she loved me.
And it's got all of that in there, but I've yet to make it.
I don't know why.
I should.
Thank you.
Now, I follow Tina on Instagram and you're like, Beyonce's mom.
Tina Niles, but she talks, you are like her honorary daughter.
She is always so proud of you.
Is Tina a good cook?
is she a good cook?
I can't even begin to tell you
the dishes that she makes are just mouth-watering.
So not only is she the most glamorous woman.
I know, but she can make...
She can cook.
Bomb, bomb greens, thank you.
Bomb macaro.
She actually makes truffle mac and cheese.
It's delicious.
Her, anytime she could, thank you so much,
any meat, it's falling off the bone.
Like she used to make turkey and the turkey would be so flavorful.
Whatever she would poke inside of the turkey, it was just so juicy.
Her gumbo is delicious.
She can cook.
Okay.
I presume that, but I just needed to know.
Yeah, she can cook for sure.
So we know your playlist.
We know what you're going to play.
We know what you're going to cook for us.
We know, actually, you didn't get back to the baked salmon.
What is the baked salmon that you're going to finesse?
What are you eating?
How are you doing the baked salmon at the moment?
The baked salmon is, so there's this seasoning.
I go to the farmer's market religiously.
And there's this couple there, and they sell this particular seasoning.
It's called kappies.
And it's delicious.
What does it?
It's some seasoning that they have made, and I love it so much.
And that's all I need on my salmon.
And then I put a little bit of butter on there, put a little bit of lemon on there,
cover it and cook it for a bit and then take it out take off the foil and then let it like broil
just a little bit at the top okay it's so good it sounds great it's so I think you sound like you know
what you're doing I'm trying and what are you going to serve it with probably spinach
mashed potatoes okay but for me whipped sweet potatoes okay yeah I can't do potatoes unless like I'm
staying inside.
Oh, what?
Because my, it doesn't, my tummy
doesn't like it. Okay. Yeah.
Now, whilst you're in London,
is there anywhere you want to eat? Are you going back to
Nobu? Is there anywhere else
you want to try? Caribbean spots.
Oh, okay. Do you know any Caribbean
spots? My team.
My team does. Okay, great.
And what's your order there?
It's either ox tail,
curry chicken. Yeah.
Or jerk chicken. Okay.
And rice and peas.
Thank you.
I'm just going to come to Brixton.
Brixton's pretty good.
We're really near Brixton.
Are we?
You could just get a little Caribbean off.
Yeah.
You could get a little on the way home.
We've tried to Manchester tonight.
Shut up.
Yes.
No, babe.
Yeah, no, it's all right.
So you go to Manchester, what, and film The Voice?
Yes.
Manchester's great.
That's where they're filming it.
Yes.
So these are beginning ones?
Yes, ma'am.
Oh, so this is where you don't see them.
Yeah.
Yeah, you got to do.
The blinds.
The blinds.
Now, forgive us because we did just want to ask you.
And actually, this is the season opener for season 19 of Table Manners.
Wow.
I know.
So because we're trying out new things, it's a fresh season.
And your song, dilemma, we're like, okay, what would be your greatest food dilemma?
Okay.
Oh, if I had to choose.
She's got it straight away.
Yes, I know for sure.
If I had to choose between.
a hot dog and a hamburger.
Oh, my goodness.
I know that sounds crazy.
Why eat it both?
Because, so my mama tea definitely is like, you know, you can't eat hot dogs.
It's a carcinogen.
Oh, because, okay.
And I'm like, so.
But I only have it, like, for the 4th of July, every year, right?
It's the one time I have it.
And sometimes I might sneak winning at the end of the year, right?
So that's just twice.
Mama tea.
I love it.
But it's so good.
I love a good chili cheese hot dog with onions, a little bit of sauerkraut, some ketchup, some mustard,
and maybe some halopickled jalapinos on the top.
You need to go and live in Austria.
You'll be away there, sourcrow and hot dogs.
Yeah. It's so good.
So making me choose between that and a cheeseburger?
I understand.
That's very hard.
Thank you so much for, like, starting this off.
with such enthusiasm.
Enthusiasm.
I think that will stick.
Do you know what?
I'd never had a corn dog till...
What is it?
Well, exactly.
It's basically a hot dog.
Has it got any meat in it?
And it's got a corn kind of crispy, crunchy bit on the outside.
Oh, yeah.
It's like delicious.
Yeah, but you really don't know what's inside or what's going on, do you?
The one where I ate at some bar on Hillhurst when I went to watch the football.
It was like a real dive.
Lenny's in a dive bar.
having a corn dog watching the Premier League?
Eating, no, it was the World Cup.
So I went to watch England and the corn dog,
I really wasn't confident what I was eating.
Was it delicious?
No.
Oh, no.
It was quite hard on the outside.
So do you want crispy onions or do you want caramelized onions?
Both.
Oh, goodness.
You're my kind of gal.
And I'd probably throw some raw ones on there too.
Okay.
Yes.
So you're like an everything gal.
Yes.
Like, is that, does that go to, like, when you're having an ice cream?
Do you want all the different, like, Sunday sprinkles?
Yes.
No, no, no, no.
I'd like to keep ice cream clean.
Oh, okay.
What's your ice cream flavor?
Chocolate.
No, fuck.
You love chocolate.
I love chocolate, but you know what I really love right now?
There's a place in L.A. called McConnell's, and their ice cream is.
Oh, I've had McConnell's.
Is it not so good?
But they have a sea salt cookies and cream.
Whoops.
It's so good.
Delicious.
Whereabouts is it?
In the valley.
Okay.
In the valley, like right there off of like Laurel Canyon.
Okay.
Gorgeous.
I'll try it.
Delicious.
Okay.
Fab.
Cone or cup?
Both.
Yes.
Yes.
But I can't get over about L.A. is how people queue up outside.
Oh, make lines.
For coffee, for ice cream, for anything.
Those are like popular stuff.
But no, it's tricky.
because you don't know like what is what
because sometimes these places like hire
other people to come in
I know, make it look at the thing.
Yeah, because wherever we, when we were in New York
and everyone was queuing outside
for Kim Kardashian's cupcakes.
Well, I think, what was it?
Crumble cookies.
It was a Kim Kardashian Crumble collaboration.
Oh, okay.
Fine.
Well, I mean, could have been a delicious.
Yeah, absolutely.
Do you think you'll ever perform again
is destiny?
child. Oh, God, I'm going to say. Jesus, that was... No, as destiny's child, do you think you'll get together?
Like a spice girl's reunion. That isn't happening. They just dropped a box set instead, and everyone
thought they were doing a reunion. Okay. Oh, it hasn't been anything we talked about. Okay.
And I was just with the girls and we have a great time talking and our children are all together.
Are you all best friends still? Yeah. Absolutely. But you're best friends before you were in the group,
weren't you virtually? Yeah. I...
I really am annoyed that I didn't see Michelle in death becomes her.
Oh, she was amazing.
I heard. She was amazing.
Who's this?
Michelle.
She's in Desmondish child.
She did, death becomes her on Broadway.
And I mean, these two went to see it and adored it.
She's incredible.
Like, she opens the show.
Would you do theater?
Have you?
I always tell Michelle, Michelle is, she keeps trying to push me in the theater.
And it depends on the role.
Okay.
What role would you?
I don't know.
Do you think you can act?
I do love acting.
I do love acting.
Well, then you should do it, right?
I did a film last year.
Okay.
It came out this year on Amazon Prime.
It was myself and Method Man.
Okay, no big deal.
It was a rom-com.
It was really cute.
Was he good as a rom-com-limbing man?
He's fantastic as an actor.
Method Man, darling.
Part of all the same plan.
And a very famous rapper.
Okay.
I know nothing about that.
You know, New York.
in that.
Well, Clinton.
Yeah, she is correct.
I also need to know about David Getter.
That, when Love Takes Over is a phenomenal song.
Thank you.
How was the experience work?
Did you get to work with it?
Did you do it remotely?
So I met David before I went to Ibiza.
Was it before I went to?
I can't.
Gosh, where were we?
In the south of France?
In the south of France.
and he played this track for me and it was absolutely incredible.
Was it undeniable?
Undeniable.
Who wrote it?
Myself and Mem and Live.
Okay.
Yeah.
And so we, I just talked to them about how my summer went, like how I would go and spend
the most amazing time out, dancing and wouldn't come home until the sun was coming up.
And it was just some of the most beautiful memories of my life.
And we wrote about it.
And they are like the easiest to write with.
Like I love that writing experience with them.
I still smell the space in which we were writing.
I remember us bouncing off of each other.
Like we were playing tennis with words.
It was so fun.
They're awesome.
Sometimes it's the easiest thing in the world.
Yeah.
And sometimes it's painful.
Yes.
And you like pulling words out of your teeth.
Like it's really tricky.
I once met David Gett.
I was doing Cachele.
It was like my first album and they said, David wants to meet you.
And so I went over to, I think it was maybe he went to his house and met him and his beautiful children who were like young children at that time.
And they made scrambled eggs for me and he wanted to like, and he was talking to me.
And he was like so.
And I think if I'm being honest, I thought that I was like, you know, more like alternative.
So more for me.
But anyway, we were chatting and I was kind of there and he's playing me some songs.
And I'm like, it's like my first taste of like being in these big mansions and like,
it was so lovely.
And somebody wrong him and went, hey, one minute, I'm just with Jesse Jay.
And I was like, oh God, does he think he's in the fucking wrong room?
I'm not Jesse Jay.
Fuck.
I think it rolls off the tongue in a French kind of, it does roll of the tongue.
Jesse Jay rolls off the tongue more than Jesse Ware.
Bless him.
But I was like, I'm not sure whether I'm supposed to be here or not.
And then we never wrote together.
But no, but I don't think
I think it was an accident
I think because like
But it was quite funny
But have you spoke to him since?
No
You should
No, maybe
Yes, you should
No, he's wonderful
But it did make me laugh
You know me, you're like
Fuck
Got the wrong Jessie
No
No, you're supposed to let him know
Before we let you go
And you travel to Manchester
Which we love Manchester
Has a heart
Mum's from Manchester
is probably going to rain up there
so you need to get your coat ready
fine
she'll be okay
you'll be okay
probably staying in the lary
but the day was so pretty today
it was beautiful
I was beautiful today
I was like is this what I'm getting
Are you staying somewhere
Are you staying in an apartment or a hotel?
Yeah the hotels are really lovely up there now
It feels lovely
and everyone's so cool
Everyone's warm
Just a few more questions
I wanted to know
What's your worst
table manner in somebody else?
Worst table men?
Yeah.
If you see someone doing it, you think, gosh.
I'm stuffing their mouth.
Oh God, I think we all did that today.
I did that.
I did that for sure.
I'm so sorry.
And I did the moment you get the last bit of food in your mouth.
But the one that really bothers me is probably a burp.
My son does that.
It's fine.
At the table?
Yes.
But is he proud of his birth?
And he only does it at home.
Okay.
So I have no doubt that your kids have got very good table manners.
I mean, we're working on it.
They're just 11 and 5.
But Titan thinks it's really funny when he burps.
But he also found a video of me burping at an MTV something back in the day.
And he was like, Mom, you didn't tell me you had this.
And then he pulls it up.
And I'm just letting a rip.
Like, I was like, what was wrong with me?
Why was I doing that?
Why was your mother?
Yeah.
Right.
So, yeah, so now he thinks it's funny, but we're working on it.
How is that for, you know, he's 11 and he's finding clips of you from like the early
naughties, right?
Yes.
Like, there's so much footage of Destiny's Child and Kelly Rowland's solo career.
Like, how does he react to it?
Is he enjoying it?
it or is he like mom why were you wearing that like or like is he quite celebratory of it my kids are the
impressed you know we were in the waterfall in jamaica and you did the oh i did survivor and yeah
duns river yeah we're in dunn's river and jessie singing yeah sing after all the i mean yeah it was great
it was a great moment for me your boy's and oh you're so sweet um but yeah how's your how is your
11 year old kind of he doesn't really trip up of it to be honest that one video
with me burping, that's the one.
He was so proud of you.
He was proud.
He was so proud.
And I think when Noah comes across something, he just kind of says, it's you.
Look, it's you.
But that's about it.
What kind of weird combination do you put together that's so weird, but it works somehow?
Ice cream and French fries.
Oh, my God.
Delicious.
Did you dip them in, then?
Yes.
Oh, my goodness.
Especially waffle fries.
Oh, my God.
Oh, my God.
Waffle fries dits in vanilla ice cream.
Are you making, are they leftover waffle fries from the burger and chips that you're having?
Or are you putting them on for your ice cream?
Putting them on for my ice cream.
Oh.
Was this like a pregnancy craving that you had and then it stuck?
No.
My mom, who introduced you?
My mom put me onto it.
When I was a kid.
And we would go to this restaurant with that had chicken sandwiches and they made really good waffle fries.
And so we got the waffle fries and she would just dip it in the ice cream.
And I was like, what are you doing?
She said, taste it.
And the salty with the sweet.
Oh, my goodness.
We've got a good one to try.
We're going to try all the things.
We definitely, we went to a restaurant and we had caviar.
on ice cream.
Is that not so good?
Have you had it before?
Yes.
You know what else is good?
Olive oil.
Yes.
Yeah.
Delicious.
Definitely.
So, absolutely.
And chocolate ice cream and olive oil with a little bit of, what?
With a little bit of sea salt.
It kind of tastes a bit like butterciss, doesn't it?
Kind of buttery.
Yeah.
It feels good for you.
Yeah.
Before we let you go, can you give us a nostalgic taste that can transport you back somewhere?
A nostalgic taste.
It would probably have to be those waffle fries with ice cream, to be honest.
Is it just you and your mom there?
Yes, I was on the elevator.
I almost dropped my fries and my ice cream, and I got so nervous.
But I remember that feeling and how good it was to share that with her.
I loved sharing food with my mom.
She was just so enthusiastic about food.
And it was one of our love languages, for sure.
I love that. Kelly Rowland, thank you for being, well, not only a superstar, but like, gorgeous and generous and such good fun.
Thank you. And congratulations on everything. I'm so excited to carry on seeing you absolutely smacking it.
Thank you. I'm looking fab after no sleep.
Thank you. And thank you for this salad. Such a pleasure. You have to tell me the ingredients for the...
Oh, I'll send it to you.
I've got it here.
It's on my phone.
It was delicious.
I'm recreating there at home.
Pelly Rowland.
She was the most beautiful woman I've ever seen.
Yes, Mel.
She was just so gorgeous, Jessie.
So when she walked in, she actually took my breath away.
First of all, the hair, you know I'm into big hair.
She had the biggest hair I've ever seen.
But the most luminous, beautiful skin.
And the most luminous, radiant skin.
And the woman did a red eyelash.
This morning.
Yeah.
And she looked like she'd been the sleep, like, for a full week.
She looked like she'd just come back from holiday.
Oh.
And a smile on her face.
Had seconds.
Yeah.
Had an answer for everything.
Yeah.
Was so up for it.
Yeah.
Just a glorious, glorious guest to start season at 19.
I love to.
The only thing I'm not sure about is chips and ice cream.
No, we're going to have to try it, Mom.
Okay, darling.
We are going to do this.
We're going to go, you can see little YouTube shorts of,
mum and I are trying things that our guests suggest. So waffle, fries and ice cream. I think that
sounds great. Okay. I'm up for the challenge. Maybe you can send us some of your combos and maybe
we'll try them out on our YouTube or on the podcast. We'll see. Thank you so much to Kelly Rowland.
You know, she's had a really, really busy day, but she was glorious and sweet and kind and
interesting and had a story for everything, just how we like it, and had seconds.
It was glamorous.
The outfit.
She looked like a doll.
She was perfect.
I mean, are we allowed to say she just got in at her comp please to go to Manchester, though?
And she still looked divine even in big combat trousers, trainers and a big hoodie.
I was like, I want to be you.
Yeah.
I want to be her too.
You can watch Kelly as the new voice judge in the UK or you can try her new Super Ranger Olai.
If it makes me look like her.
Me too, I'm trying it. I'm in.
My mum was right.
We will see you next week for more Tablemanners.
