All right, everybody shut up.
It's a Tabs Out bonus episode.
Tabs Out.
Bonus episode.
Too spooky.
Way too spooky Tabs out.
Oh my goodness, way too scary.
What is going on?
I don't know.
That was terrifying.
Somebody turn on the lights.
Well, the lights are already on, Jamie.
Don't pretend like this is more intimate than it is.
It's very nice, but it's not that nice.
Tabs out bonus episode.
The first of its kind, I believe.
I've looked in the archives and I've yet to find a specimen similar to it.
The maiden voyage.
I'm Mike.
I'm Ian.
And I'm Jamie.
It's a weird mix up tonight.
You guys have both been here before.
Yeah.
Separately.
Separately.
Never together. And certainly, I look over there always expecting to see Dave. And I see Jamie. tonight yeah you guys have both been here before yeah separately separately never together and
certainly it's i look over there always expecting to see dave and i see jamie it's just so scary
hey guys i'm dave doyan are you gonna clown dave in his throne well i'm sure right now he is
sweating sweating like a two dollar bottle of gin ultimate diss. We are here to do a bonus episode because
you might call it a bonus. You might call it
a miniature, a micro
episode.
Maybe we'll pepper them in
every once in a while.
This one, I thought we would convene
to talk about this new
box set on NNA Tapes.
What is it called? Centennial?
Is that what it's called? I believe so. It's called Centennial. It's a six-tape box set that Nna tapes what is it called centennial is that what it's called i believe so it's called
centennial it's six takes box set that nna just put out to celebrate 100 releases right wow 100
and 10 years right 10 years of a label and they went all out for this thing and why don't you
just take that little guy i shouldn't say say little guy. No, I apologize.
So I want to... It's like a 12-inch box there, a 10-inch box.
Yeah, this is huge.
I think we're working with a 10 by 10.
Oh, he's knocking on it.
What kind of alloy is that?
I don't know.
Ooh.
That's made out...
What is that, though?
Seriously, aluminum?
Chromium.
Probably, yeah.
Is that chromium dioxide?
What is Wolverine made of? is that animatium yeah uh
something like what's vibranium wait wait wait what number did they get oh that's my first
complaint 62 62 it's numbered here's two complaints about the numbering let's start off with some
shit talking on this thing right into it because everybody deserves the realness well dave's not
here to know if that's a funny number or not.
So I don't know either. I don't think it is, though.
But you know what I do know is a funny number?
What? 69, man.
That's a funny number. 69!
There he is. He's never been in the studio.
So I didn't get 69. It's almost like
they're one of the many people who don't listen to the show
and don't really get it. Which is fine.
A lot of people are with you there.
I don't like where they numbered it.
It's this nice-ass box
with a debossed, stamped
in of their logo on the front.
So clean, so crisp.
Very sexy. Very romance.
Mike, you put a lot
of fingerprints on that cover.
I'll tell you another complaint.
If you get your greasy fingers on this thing,
you're covering it.
That's why I'm holding it on the corners.
I'm realizing.
I hope they don't find this at a crime scene
because they'll get me in like an afternoon.
I'll shine it for you after the show.
I'm pretty good at shining box sets.
Thank you.
I'm pretty greasy is the problem
and my fingers maintain most of the grease
and it gets on stuff like this.
Okay.
But I don't like where they numbered it.
Just with a pen inside the lid of the box.
I don't mind it.
See, but they have
the next thing you see right is this 10 by 10 print this artwork by robert beatty which is
which is sweet that's nice very nice with the track listing on the back of all the tapes right
all the tapes they should have numbered it on this okay whatever it's cool it's cool that's fine
i see ian explain to me now what you get when you open the damn thing up.
Well, underneath this print, you see all six tapes.
All six tapes.
And the cover art goes across all six tapes.
I'm sure there's a word for that.
It's not a collage. What would you call that?
A mosaic.
Oh, my.
Very good, Jamie.
Very good.
It's got hard-boiled eggs on it.
And it makes the mosaic, is what I was going to say.
Yeah, it's beautiful.
Give me the first tape.
I've never seen anything like it.
I've never seen anything like it, in tape form or other.
I'm just going to hit play here on the first tape.
I believe this is, give me the paper.
The colors are really true matching between the two,
the tape covers and the insert.
That is true.
They're beautiful colors.
And we should say that, what, there's 150 of them.
And all of these tracks, I believe, are unreleased tracks.
It's not like stuff from the tapes.
It's all the artists.
All the artists.
But this is Sun Circle,
who I believe that was the first tape they put out, correct?
I'm checking on Discogs right now.
I swear to God, I'm checking it right now.
My Sun Circle Pregnant Moon split was NNA number one
in 2008 and Pregnant Moon's up next.
But like, Jesus Christ, this thing.
Except for the problems that I already brought up.
Is this the first time NNA has done a different, you know how like all their covers have the circle?
All their covers are like the circle, but it's folded down the middle?
Right.
Well, if they've done shit like that, um, fuck, who is is it are you saying it's the first time it's a full circle well like you see
the middle tape has you know the middle section of the artwork and not like most of the self-release
not self-release but the single release tapes have like that semi-circle or like the full
circle that wraps around you You know what I mean?
Yeah, I know what you mean.
And this is different than that.
I know.
I'm asking,
is this the first time this is different?
No, because what I was saying
before I was rudely interrupted
was I can't remember the name.
Drainolith.
They did like that Drainolith tape,
but that came with like an LP.
So that's different.
You see what I'm saying?
Mm-hmm.
All right, you guys, let's dip out for a minute and let this tape play for a little bit.
Faded in nice and slow.
Yeah, I think this sounds like, oh, that was a perfect transition.
All right, cut us out.
And this is, who is this, Pregnant Moon now?
Yep.
Let's let this play. Thank you. Thank you. © BF-WATCH TV 2021 Thank you. Thank you. © BF-WATCH TV 2021 Thank you. © B Emily Beynon ¶¶ I'm going to go ahead and do that. so Thank you. so so um Thank you. Thank you. Thank you. Good.
Slide that down.
Slide that down.
Slide that down. Wow, down. Slide that down.
Wow, that was a little,
that was a tasty little trip we just went on.
Yeah.
Drip house.
So, um.
Jamie, say everything that was on that first tape.
Everything.
Don't leave anything out.
I swear to God, if you leave one thing out.
Yes.
The first tape is Sun Circle, Pregnant Moon,
Dwayne Pietre, Pink Desert,
Jeffrey Cantu Ledesma, Toby Aronson, Cabo Ladies, Harmonizer,
Jeff Astin and Raymond Reitano, Time Life, and Non Horse.
We just listened to Drip House, and right now,
what we hear behind us is from Portland, Oregon, Pulse Emitter.
Can't wait to taste your sweet treats today.
I'm actually wearing a Pulse Emitter t-shirt right now.
You came prepared.
Yeah.
And I was at a coffee shop today
and the guy said,
who's that?
Who's Pulse Emitter?
And I got to tell him
a little bit about it.
You say some fucking,
man, you wouldn't even get it, man.
No, he was talking...
The stinkicides are so outsider,
you wouldn't even get it, bro.
Don't even try.
Just keep listening to Nickelback, bro.
He was talking about
Throbbing Gristle.
I invited him to the final Friday. Not just Gristle, Throbbing Gristle.
Holy cows.
Big boy.
What coffee shop was this? Drip Cafe
in Hocasin. How inconvenient, because we just
played Drip House. Drip House.
And that was Drip Cafe. I wonder if
they're associated in any way.
You gotta wonder these things sometimes.
Stay in age.
Jamie, you were upset earlier because this isn't on
Discogs yet.
It is not. Come on, guys.
And you're a Discogs
hound, correct?
Get your scanner.
You gotta do some data entry.
Do you want to borrow this to put this on?
This is gonna be like an hour
and a half homework assignment.
So I'll let somebody else do it.
I like the hand cut foam.
Joby wouldn't be able to stand this because he can't touch the stuff.
Oh, really?
It's like sandpaper.
He's been pranked by many textures.
And I think this is one of them.
But it doesn't just go around them.
They lie on top of it.
Yeah.
And this I would have to say, let's say it right now.
Because we know the artwork.
The gorgeous Robert Beatty artwork.
Right.
It goes around as a mosaic, as I believe I was the one that brought that up earlier.
Okay.
This one has the best art on it.
Was that a butt?
That must be a butt.
Jamie, you pervert.
You're a player, brother.
Yeah, that's a butt.
Of course it is.
Ian didn't want it.
Look, he's been looking at it all night.
But this is the best one, right?
Out of all the tapes.
Okay.
This has the coolest artwork out of these six tapes.
And you're saying this one doesn't?
That, ooh, gross.
What's going on there?
Some, like, lightning.
That's not lightning.
I don't know what that is.
This is very perverted.
No, this is...
I would say another beef that I have...
I like how I keep bringing up things I don't like about it.
Like, all the spines are exactly the same.
You know what I mean?
They all just say various artists centennial. I feel like, and I know you don't, like, see the spines are exactly the same. You know what I mean? They all just say various artists centennial.
I feel like,
and I know you don't like see the spines or whatever,
but I feel like the spine should,
if they're going to say the same thing,
they should all be in different colors.
And then the cassette shell should have been that color.
Are they all the same?
Yeah.
I want them to do one,
one more like this just for me.
Okay.
And then Jamie will put on discogs.
And then, Hey guys, next time
send us three copies.
I paid my own gas money
to go over here.
And I'm leaving empty handed.
On the band camp, it's
$50 for the digital download.
Get them, Jamie. Get them, Jamie.
$50? Who pays $50
for a damn digital download? Drag them, Jamie. Get him, Jamie. $50? Who pays $50 for a damn digital tablet?
Drag him, Jamie.
Drag him.
Oh, man.
This pulse emitter is tight right now.
Crazy.
This is the kind of music you do like a one-hitter to the dome to
when you're just soaring like Superman, right?
Listen.
Listen to this outsider bullshit, Listen. Listen to this
outsider bullshit, man.
They call this music
in some circles.
No, this is tight.
Fade this out
and let's pick up
take number three.
The top right corner.
You mean fade it in
or fade it out?
Fade this out
so I can turn it off
like it's natural.
Man, I don't have much room
to do this.
There we go.
If Dave can work over there, you can work over there.
All right.
All of the J cards on the back on all of them,
it has how they're professionally manufactured,
duplicated, and packaged in Springfield, Missouri
by National Audio Company.
You think they got a little kickback for putting that on there?
I hope so.
Do you think these are like the crap
tapes that National Audio is left with now?
Oh, yeah.
They do have the soft...
You know, it's a good ending, though.
I mean, I think we're reaching peak tape
of what we can do with them.
There's only so much shit you can put on these guys.
That's true.
Before it starts, he starts repeating itself a little bit.
I'm going to press play on this third tape.
Okay.
Which is side what, Ian?
E.
Side E.
Oh, like you, Ian.
Well.
That's you.
Not really.
You're going to like this one.
Ramble off for me.
Everyone who's on it playing this shit.
Side E, we got Dranolith, Inner City,
Quicksails, Hexbreaker Quintet,
Quintet.
Quintet.
Rail or Rall?
I'm not sure.
Levin Martin's Moana,
Keith Fullerton Whitman, Ryan Power,
La Revelateur,
and Fork.
Fork. And who are we listening to now?
This is Dranolith.
Difficult Days. This is too scary.
This is like a Halloween, a haunted house
song. I don't feel very comfortable
right now, boys. We're coming up on October.
Jamie, I know even coming up on
October is too scary for me. Too mean.
Jamie, just to let you know, when I get too scared,
Dave lets me jump in his lap
like a Scooby-Doo.
So that might happen, okay?
Okay, I'll prepare my lap.
Should we fade
our dumbasses out and listen to this
for a little bit? Yeah, probably.
Yeah, let's do that. Dranerlith, correct?
Yep. Basement of a building I've never seen before
Andre Weekend breakfast is a big old piece of squash.
Cooking your way through a difficult mosh.
Sunday morning, the church bells ring.
Sunday morning, the church bells ring. Sunday morning, the church bells ring.
The bread is gone moldy, the church bells ring.
The bread is gone moldy, the church bells ring.
The bread is gone moldy, the church bells ring. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you. I'm Thank you. I'm going to go to bed. Oh.
Yes.
That's nice.
Well, we start off there with the Drain-A-Lith track,
Difficult Days, off that tape number three on side E.
Mm.
Inner City, Quicksails.
We read all that shit, right?
What's all on there?
We read all that. And then? What's all on there? We read all that.
And then we jump to the tape number four,
which is in the lower left-hand
quadrant, if you're keeping track
in your head on where these tapes are.
It's two rows of three.
And I believe that was Decimus.
And I believe right now we're going into
Belarusk, if my calculations
are correct. On side G.
Howard Stelzer.
Who else is on here?
Fork.
Ryan Power.
Some French one.
Jason Lescali.
A new astral social loop.
It's all very blurry when I'm looking at it right now.
It's the purple and the yellow.
It's getting you. And like, everything's vibrating. There's these little lines in the
artwork, too, in the background.
Oh, really? Oh.
That's what I'm going to blame right now.
Just tearing this tape apart.
The Belarus tape that NNA put out a while back is fucking insane.
I forget what it's called.
If you go on Discogs, you can find...
Oh, so that's on there.
That's on there, but not this.
What are you talking about?
The Belarus.
Belarus tape is on Discogs, but the box set is not.
Oh, yeah. Well, you should be happy about that, right? Because you're a Discogs maniac. Yeah, yeah. You're a Discogs, but the box set is not. Oh, yeah.
Well, you should be happy about that, right?
Because you're Discogs mania.
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
You're a Discogs hound.
Never forget that.
These boxes, brushed aluminum is what they are, fabricated by Brian Raymond with assistance
from Cold Hollow of Burlington, Vermont.
125 copies.
How much for the digital again?
How much was it?
$50.
$50.
Hilarious.
Come on.
So do you guys remember
Belarus playing the bike shop?
Yeah, I do.
And Virus played.
Yes.
Really great set.
Great show.
Virus.
Is that how you say it?
Or did you just say Virus? I said Virus. I don't know. There's two S's. Plus great set. Great show. Varus. Varus. Is that how you say it? Or did you just say virus?
I said virus.
I don't know.
There's two S's plus an E.
And an E.
So all together, it's virus and then S and an E.
But that's neither here nor there.
What is it about Discogs that makes you go wacky that you've got to get shit on there
and you've got to scan everything?
And when you look at this box set, would you scan the foam inlay
and stuff like that too? I would take
a picture with my phone of the cover,
the inside of the cover,
the cassettes inside
the foam, and then I would have to scan
all six J cards, front
and back, all six cassettes
front and back, and the insert front
and back. It's a lot of work.
So if they're not going to send me a free copy,
somebody else can do it.
Was that a threat?
Do you want to make it an official threat right now?
That is a threat.
No, that's a threat.
Pizza and Cazon, leave me alone.
Oh, my goodness.
Now, the bottom middle tape, that's the one you...
I would say this is the one...
No, not even this.
I was hoping there would be one tape that would have...
It would look like the traditional NNA artwork.
But you're never really going to get that.
This one is probably the closest you're going to get.
It is, yeah.
Or does the circle go that way?
The circle goes this way, right?
It's right in the middle.
Does the circle go to the spine or away from the spine?
I can't think of it.
It goes of it.
It goes towards it.
What goes towards it?
The middle of the circle.
The middle of the circle?
How does the middle of the circle go towards anything?
Where are they on the stack?
They all have white spines.
They're right there.
Is it a crescent or an arc?
It's an arc, Jamie.
Oh, they go like that, yeah.
I was wrong.
So the hard part of the circle.
The hard part.
That's where we are.
You know what?
What?
It wraps around the inside.
And we got there.
We figured it out. So it's a full circle that goes on the inside panel to the...
whatever you call that.
Is this part of the song?
It's pretty cool.
It's pretty good, right?
This is an official collaboration.
All right, you want to fade this down?
Let's go to this next tape.
Let's see what this starts off.
And what side are we on here?
This particular side is side G.
That's what that was.
Now we're going to go to tape five, side I.
Like Ian.
Yeah.
Another one just like you.
No, just this one.
The other one is not.
It's I-A-N.
You should be such a proud boy. No. Do you feel like a proud boy? No. Wait this one. The other one is not. It's I-A-N. You should be such a proud boy.
No. You feel like a proud boy?
No.
Wait a minute.
What kind of proud boy are you talking about?
I didn't mean like, yeah, let's move on.
Tape number five.
We know about, we know about you.
Where are you standing, Ian?
Tape number five, side I, just like you.
Yeah.
You ever think about, let me ask you this question, Ian,
before we press play on this tape.
Actually, let's press play, and I'll ask why the tape's playing.
I'll ask you why Migrations and Russ is playing.
You ever think about going to a street sign for North Franklin
and putting an I-A in front of the N so it says Ian Franklin?
You ever think about doing a bad boy thing like that?
I thought about doing similar bad boy stuff
but not that one specifically.
Because then everybody would know my full name.
You know, putting that out there.
You know what they should have done
another thing they should have done with this box?
Put a little surprise underneath
the phone.
How do you know there isn't?
Have you looked? I haven't looked now that you say it.
Wow.
I'm afraid to get all the tapes out at once
because I'll never be able to put them back together.
I'll never be able to create this circle again.
I'll do it. No, you'll fuck it up.
No, we have to know now.
You'll mess it up, I'm telling you.
Maybe the digital download card's there.
What if I just pull up the phone?
Oh, you know what? It's separate pieces of phone.
Wow.
Take that foam out.
Let's take a look at it.
Measure twice.
Now I'm curious.
They don't mention the phone in the liner notes,
which I find is odd now.
I feel like that's a very important part of the piece.
Oh, so it's two.
Oh, they cut this square out.
And then there's another.
Damn, what if there was something? There's nothing in there though huh no no national treasure look there's fingerprints there are
fingerprints though that could be makes those could be Masonic I'll have to have
my put the rubber back on the phone back on other my boys in the lab check it out
mmm Jesus Christ.
All right.
Do we want to let Migrations and Rust play for a little bit?
Oh, yeah.
Let's do this. Hell, yeah. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you. those migrations in Rust.
Oh.
Hmm.
Oh.
So good.
Jesse Allen, I believe, is the name of that person, right?
Yeah.
I'm right.
Give me this.
What did we jump from?
We did two things, right?
Or did we start?
I forget what we did.
No, that's all we played, right?
Since the last thing?
Jamie, you're deep in thought. Are you putting this on Discogs right now?
No, I thought I screwed up this recording.
I don't really know Reaper 2.
I'm recording this in Reaper,
and things are freaking me out a little bit.
What's Reaper?
It's a freeware DAC.
Do you check for any worms or anything?
Dave always scans for worms.
I'm using the evaluation license,
so you never know.
Jesus Christ.
I hope you don't get worms in the mixer.
Then they'll go through the USB
into Dave's computer.
Read everybody
who was on that.
After Migrations and Rust, there's
Banny Grove and Gorilla Toss.
Another fork track.
Tradici Bachi.
Flip side is
Battle Trance,
Sediment Club,
Kid Millions,
and Sarah Bernstein.
It's got hot boiled eggs on it.
Way Zongle.
Wait, big fan over here.
He's a nut.
Sit down, Jamie.
I got two more to read here.
Last two,
Olivia Block and Patrick Higgins.
That's tape five.
Sides I and J.
Heavy hitters.
You're right.
Let me see this.
Actually, don't give the J me.
And let's find out who's on this last tape.
The bottom right-hand quadrant of this show. Tape number six.
Numero seis.
Sides K and L.
We got Booker, Stardrum,
Jake,
Minjinsky,
Percussion,
which is an excerpt.
Mm.
AJ Cornell,
Nerftoss,
Fox Soap.
Not,
is it Nerftoss or Nerf Herder?
Nerftoss.
Okay.
All right,
whatever.
D.
Ryan,
approximate harmonic derivatives of the Schumann resonance to the open musical mathematical
matrix of creative connection to the soul of wisdom of the universe.
Hold on.
Hold on.
What is this?
Is this a prank?
Oh, that was the title of the D-Rand.
Okay.
Jesus Christ.
Sorry.
It was on the next line.
Jesus Christ.
Max Eilbacher.
Tradici Bacci.
Grid.
Leah Bertucci.
And Ren Kitts.
And you mentioned it.
Yeah.
Actually, I met all you guys around 2014.
I started listening to the podcast then,
and one of the first episodes I heard...
Is this a true story?
Yeah.
That's when you met us?
Yeah, in late 2013.
Oh, this is so cute.
Yeah.
I'm so happy.
Go ahead.
Give praise upon me.
One of the first tapes I bought was an NNA tape,
the Tradici Bacci tape from back then.
Is this a true story?
True story. True.
Jamie doesn't lie. Don't pee on my leg,
Jamie. Actually, you can pee on my leg.
Just a little pee. Just give me a little pee.
Not too much. Do you have the tape deck
unmuted? I have
the volume all the way down. You want me to bring it up?
I've been playing this tape. I'm sorry.
I gotta apologize.
I'm in a dungeon now. Who are we bringing in here?
Who is this? Jamie knows. We got sorry. I got to apologize. I'm in a dungeon now. Who are we bringing in here? Who is this?
Jamie knows.
We got Booker Stardrum here.
Is this the tape number six?
It's the last tape.
Last tape.
Okay, this is what I just read.
So it's Take Me Home Tonight.
Yeah.
The track is called In My Intermediate Brain.
It's only a two-minute track, so we...
No, it's probably still that track,
but it might be on the tail end of it.
Tail end.
Tail end. That's the ending. Well, who's next? that track, but it might be on the tail end of it. Tail end.
That's the ending.
Well, who's next?
I want to know who we're going to go out on.
We're going into next Jake Majinski.
And I apologize.
I said percussion excerpt.
So this track by Jake Majinski that's coming up is music for sine waves and percussion excerpts.
So I'm not sure if you can find the full version on a different release or an upcoming release we'll find out stay tuned maybe they're just pranking
i like both sine waves and percussion quite a bit all in all though i think it's safe to say
you should probably grip this box set if you want to. At the moment, they're still available.
Definitely. Alright, who's this coming in?
We'll shut our traps.
Who is it? It's probably Jake Majinski
track. Okay, let's end it.
Bonus episode.
Did I do that?
Congrats to NNA Tapes.
Yeah, yeah, big up. Amazing.
Except for when Jamie drags you. © transcript Emily Beynon Thank you. The Thank you. Thank you. Thank you.
