Starting point is 00:00:00 Tabs out. Cassette podcast bonus episode. A little finish off the year. Wrap it all up. Put a little pretty bow on it. Talk about all that good stuff. All the stuff we like from this year. I am Mike.
Starting point is 00:00:45 I'm Mike and I'm here with Jamie, who is always here. Jamie, hello. Hi. You're always here for the bonus episodes, right? That's true. Everybody's always excited to see you. But there's some new faces also. Who's that?
Starting point is 00:00:56 Who wants to go first? Who else is here tonight? Who the hell is that? Ryan, I see you. Yeah, you go ahead. You go ahead. Listen, I don't any listen i just want to say for all the newcomers for all the newcomers this is it's going to be very safe
Starting point is 00:01:10 and very nice nothing scary is going to happen don't be afraid too scary unmute yourselves all right i've done this before ryan you have done this before yes uh ryan musteller a reviewer extraordinaire no one yeah no a wordsmith like no one puts a description to a 15 minute drone tape quite like ryan musteller he will quickly quickly your uh edition of 25 tapes will be sold out and also here with us do it do it do it maddie uh yes that is me introduce yourself i'll give you a little bit of an applause too oh my god thank you well hello it's me maddie i am a blog enthusiast i kind of just popped in your email box months ago was like do you want a guy to contribute yeah and i was like i was like no i want to do it of course and the blog the blog it looked kind of a little a little sparing at times and i was like i want to do this
Starting point is 00:02:12 what do you mean by that oh it just there would be a month with no review and i was like that's one of the skills i learned that's not you know that's not true i think there's been like a month with just me reviewing i think yeah yeah big shout out to ryan for keeping tabs out going i'm more of a big big picture guy i have to get i have to communicate to the people i don't have time to type it all out i have a lot inside a lot of ideas i need to get them all out so i do it this way yeah i figured normally at the end of the year i do a bit of uh where we do we do a bit of a um a top 200 list we do the 200 tapes from the year the best ones the absolute best painstakingly we go through the list we we look at each individual tape it takes many many we
Starting point is 00:03:01 say we actually start at the beginning of the year. We do. We start going through all these things. Oh, wow. It's very impressive. We did this year. I didn't. We didn't this year. No, I didn't. Because of the novel coronavirus,
Starting point is 00:03:13 I didn't really pay too close attention to all the tapes. And I think only 199 tapes were released this year anyway. So legally... No, you can't do it. Legally, we couldn't do it, we couldn't do the top 200. So I figured, instead, let's get together and let's just talk about our favorite, because I actually don't know.
Starting point is 00:03:33 I also need to be told what was good this year. So how about Ryan? Actually, Matty, this is your first go-around, right? Oh, boy, it is. This is my first doing this shit for real. Oh, God. This is a lot of pressure right oh boy it is this is my first you know doing this shit for real oh god this is a lot of pressure right now this is huge a lot of people won't survive this i the best your top tape of the year what was it oh my god i'm gonna go ahead and give that distinction to claire rosie's a Touch. Oh, very interesting.
Starting point is 00:04:05 Ooh. I tried to make different awards. I always prefer to give everybody a different kind of, you know, a little standout feature or something. And I feel like if I were going to give something to Claire, it'd be, you know, best artist that should be signed to like Cranky Records or, you know, somewhere kind of big right now. I think there's a weird sound that's missing on a lot of these big shot ambient
Starting point is 00:04:29 labels. And Claire really just kind of came out of nowhere. Wasn't actually for a retweet from you guys. I don't think I would have bought all of her tapes by complete accident. No problem. The dog comes to me. Another. A confessor. A person. A person.
Starting point is 00:04:50 A person. A person. A person. A person. A person. A person. A person. A person.
Starting point is 00:04:51 A person. A person. A person. A person. A person. A person. A person. A person.
Starting point is 00:04:51 A person. A person. A person. A person. A person. A person. A person. A person.
Starting point is 00:04:52 A person. A person. A person. A person. A person. A person. A person. A person.
Starting point is 00:04:54 A person. A person. A person. A person. A person. A person. A person. A person.
Starting point is 00:04:57 A person. A person. A person. A person. A person. A person. A person. A person.
Starting point is 00:05:00 A person. A person. A person. A person. A person. A person. A person. A person.
Starting point is 00:05:03 A person. A person. A person. A person. A person. A person. A person. A person. A person. A person. A person. A person. A person. A person. I think the color is a little bit... I don't know. I'll start to exchange the colors. The painted lips actually move. That makes it... I'm not sure.
Starting point is 00:05:29 I'm not sure. I'm not sure. I'm not sure. I'm not sure. I'm sorry. Oh, look at this. Speak of the devil. Claire Rousey. Hello. Hey.
Starting point is 00:06:24 Hey, Claire. Hey, Claire. You're muted. Hello. Hey. Hey, Claire. Hey, Claire. You're muted. No, Claire's muted. There we go. You're muted. I can't hear you. Can anyone hear?
Starting point is 00:06:33 No. I can't hear. What a biff. This is a huge. I see the mute icon on that. I'm unmuted. Are you unmuted? Did you do it?
Starting point is 00:06:43 I did it. Yes. Very good. did it. Oh, very good. Very good. Claire, we were just talking, we were just talking about you. What were you saying?
Starting point is 00:06:53 Maddie, do you want to go over? Do you just want to say it all again? I did have a standout for Claire. Cause I was trying to give different people a standouts. I've, I think I've said it before on Twitter, Claire,
Starting point is 00:07:02 I really think you gotta, you gotta hustle to get to cranky records there. that get that tape reach you know working hard enough he was saying you're stuck you're stuck in the mud at astral spirits i think was the exact phrase i don't say that i think astral spirits a great place that's a good place to be we should mention he's been here for a little bit tim thornton tim thornton how are you doing i'm doing good it's very good it's very nice that you're here considering that this is kind of like the best of 2020 you know this we're wrapping it all up i already talked about a pretty bell i'm putting on it and um you were you on suite 309 your label you put out
Starting point is 00:07:42 the top it had the distinction of being the number one tape of last year yeah the 101 notes on jazz how do you feel like uh what do you have any words of wisdom to whoever takes home the crown this year i had to keep it in stock how did how did it change your life how just tell me how it changed your life and don't take too much of my time don't take too much time but tell me how it literally changed your life and how you every all your shit changed about like your entire like where you stood in the cassette world totally shifted overnight and how did it change everything changed for you yeah how'd it change yeah zero there's zero who said that there's zero so zero what you guys do? Take it and do something crazy to it?
Starting point is 00:08:27 What? Who's that? Does someone else have a soundboard? Does someone else have a soundboard? Yeah, I got a soundboard. I thought you were making. You're not allowed to do that. What the hell is it?
Starting point is 00:08:37 Some of the registered voters are on there. Yeah. This is. I've never heard of such a thing happening I'd say that poll book is off by over a hundred thousand Tim everyone is finally
Starting point is 00:08:54 I'm so glad I invited you tonight I can't just sit with a sampler next to me and not do that that's fine what else you got give me another taste I signed something saying that if I'm wrong and not do that. That's fine. What else you got? Give me another taste. And I signed something saying that if I'm wrong, I can go to prison. Did you?
Starting point is 00:09:13 Yours are very long. That's just the long one. This is the one I wanted to use a lot. Zero. There's zero. Tim, what was your favorite Claire Rousey tape from this year? And be honest. Be's zero. Tim, what was your favorite Claire Rousey tape from this year? And be honest. Be brutally honest.
Starting point is 00:09:30 Probably the one I just got, the split with, what is it, Wind Tide? And it looks real nice, and it's got the little edge. Should I get my copy and show it to you, Mike? Yeah, get your copy right now. It's so bright and beautiful. The case is in great. Claire, tell us copy right now. It's so bright and big. The case is in great. Claire, tell us about this tape.
Starting point is 00:09:49 Oh, it's fantastic. Split release between New Computer Girls and Full Spectrum. Here we go. Look at this. Yeah, Windpipe on one side, Claire and Mari on the other. Look at this. It's got this little slip. Mari is more ease.
Starting point is 00:10:05 Mari's off. That one's also in my bag over here. Well. Mario's more ease. Mario's off. That one's also in my bag over here. Well, here's my problem. Okay, yeah. That's on my list. I see the laser-etched Noroka case. My problem for that is, like, what if it breaks? No.
Starting point is 00:10:19 I was so glad. It was packed well. I have a story for the person their case broke. We shot her. Play it again. What did you guys do? Take it and do something crazy to it? That's her case shattered. That sucks, man.
Starting point is 00:10:39 Let me talk to the person whose case shattered. How did it shatter? Oh, I'm guessing the. How did it shatter? Oh, I'm guessing the USPS did it on Aspen. I wish I could get it louder. Also, this person's name is Cassette. Their name is Cassette?
Starting point is 00:10:56 On the tape podcast. Yeah, I did not expect to be here. Oh, wait. Is this a phone call or a video that you have going on right now this is a phone video call this is a real live person we're talking to put them on but i want to ask them what was their favorite tape from this year what was your i we got to know uh cassette what was your favorite tape

Starting point is 00:11:55 Dave! Dave! There he is. I gotta go. My parents just came in. What's going on? You're looking pretty good. I'm leaving. Bye. Claire, you're not going to hang out?
Starting point is 00:12:10 Oh my god, I wish I could, but I am basically not functional right now. Alright, well thanks for stopping by. Thanks for talking a little bit. Bye Claire. See you Claire. Davey boy, you look mighty comfy tonight you got your snowman hat on you got your sunglasses on these are prescription
Starting point is 00:12:30 oh you got your prescription sunglasses on these are medicine glasses oh boy is that a Stereolab shirt there? yeah it's some bootleg I got online I'd say that poll book is off by over 100,000 Dave only wears his Stereol Lab shirt when he's podcasting.
Starting point is 00:12:48 Dave, if I don't know if you know. It's my weekend shirt. Okay, nice. I can respect that. Tim's here, and he's got a soundboard. Zero. There's zero. So.
Starting point is 00:12:59 He's got some long drops. He's got long. We actually gave Tim a nickname. It's Tim Long Drop Thor. He's got long... We actually gave Tim a nickname. It's Tim Long Drops Thornton. He's got those long drops like halls. Oh, boy, oh, boy. Dave, we were doing the... We were talking about tapes of what we were doing.
Starting point is 00:13:19 I'm going to be frank about it. You got a favorite from this year? What's your favorite? I don't really know what came out this year. This year is kind of like a blur. I don't think we got a whole lot, especially after March or so.
Starting point is 00:13:38 I'm still jamming this Corner Office tape by Max Zuckerman a whole lot. Oh, yeah? That's good. This one? Yeah, that's the one. That's a good one. Thanks.
Starting point is 00:13:51 Hey, Keith. Keith Rankin. How's it going? Who's everyone? Seth Graham. There they are, both of them. Everybody. I want everybody to shut up for a second. These are cassette legend royalty just entered the room you see these people just came in these people
Starting point is 00:14:10 are just fucking around these are this is orange milk we're talking about i used to get orange milk tapes all the time now i look at the band camp and it's like i don't recognize it there's zero it's probably those mail sorting machines they got rid of. That's probably what the problem is. No way. What did you guys do? Take it and do something crazy to it? They just stopped sending them.
Starting point is 00:14:36 They stopped sending them. That's Mike. You're lying. I'm not. Why haven't I gotten the last few batches? Explain to me why I have not received the last few batches of orange milk tapes. Are you too big for us now? I got them. I wrote about them.
Starting point is 00:14:49 You're sending them right to Ryan? Maybe I shouldn't say anything. Are you seriously sending them right to Ryan? I sent some directly to you. I sent not the last two, but the ones before that. And what not the last two but the ones before that. And what were those last two?
Starting point is 00:15:08 I can't even remember. I gotta look it up. Well, the last two were the LCM and the Galen Tipton. You just ruined the show. Tim, first of all, Dave, you don't get it. Tim's purpose here is to ruin the show Tim first of all Dave you don't get it Tim's purpose here is to ruin the show
Starting point is 00:15:28 like every podcast needs one person that you hate and normally it's me but tonight we're making it Tim but Jamie I'm surprised Tim beat your ass he spanked your ass I'm offended by that statement cause you want to be the one they don't like. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:15:48 I didn't even see Tim over here. What's up, Tim? Hey, how's it going? Yeah, everyone's here. Hi, Tim. Tim, what was your favorite tape on Orange Milk this year? Shut up. I'm asking a question.

Their guys are right here. So any complaints you have for them, they're right here in front of us. Their guys are right here, so any complaints you have for them, they're right here. My favorite one is the Recovery Girl Super Bonus Edition. That's this year, right?
Starting point is 00:16:32 Yeah. Yeah, I like that one. That one is good, high energy. Keith, Seth, tell us about that tape. What is he talking about? I don't know anything about it because I never got it. I sent you that one, Mike. Starting point is 00:17:32 I bought it. Yeah, dude. Sorry, Tim. I don't participate in late capitalism. And I'm sorry you're just a cog in the machine. But I'm on the fringes waiting for free tapes. Hey, oh, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey Let me through, let me out I'm not here to be loved
Starting point is 00:18:08 Never gonna look into you So let me through, let me out Take my soul and my love Never gonna look into you Look into you Look into you Look into you Look into you I want to feel it all, I don't need none in general I want to feel everything I can breathe

Oh, you know know what i bought that uh formal log tape what is it of that formal log tape on refulgent um sepulcher i don't know what you just said for formal form a log form a log yeah form a log. Yeah, form a log. Because that's another label that doesn't send us stuff. And I keep track of them. And every once in a while... There's zero.
Starting point is 00:21:32 I will say, I do expect, if I buy a tape, I do expect to get the rest of the batch thrown in. Seth, you've been biting your tongue. What do you got to say down there? I just wanted to say sorry to Tim I sent him two of the same tapes and I'm going to send him the correct tape thank you

Which one? It's Re-Animator.
Starting point is 00:22:28 It's Re-Animator. Noah Kravetsky's, rest in peace. Oh, yeah, yeah. Yeah, no, we have a bunch of those. Yeah, we have a bunch of those still. We pressed a lot of them. Then send some over to my old radio station. You guys have always been homies for us. Over at KCSB.c also i'll take a copy
Starting point is 00:22:47 well email us the address and i'll send it what the fuck what the fuck is going on right now what is this what is this schmoozing what is this you can't remember i just can't i can't remember like ryan messages me so i just send him whatever but i'm not like gonna be like oh yeah mike wants free tapes like my life's too busy for that shit i'm on your mailing list i get the mailing list and i'm like oh yeah send them to me we don't honor the mailing list at all do we i mean we have a mailing we have one but i do i don't think we do i usually do that part yeah what's the what's the what's the division of labor over orange milk who handles who handles what and what's one thing you wanted to say to the other person you've been holding your tongue
Starting point is 00:23:37 and you just say like man seth's really been like he i like he says he wants to do orders when he wants to do them. What? What's one thing like that that you're like, you got to get your shit together? In 2021, New Year's resolution for Orange Milk, Keith Rankin, Seth Graham, let's hear them. What are they? We were just together yesterday talking about this stuff.
Starting point is 00:24:03 Yeah, like a really serious conversation. But now I can't deliver anything jokey i'm sorry i don't know what do you mean jokey i'm asking you a serious question the fuck is that supposed to mean i don't know i have no idea like i have no idea i got nothing wait a second i just mike i just pulled up my mailing log and on 8-18-20 I sent a media mail package to you there you go Mike
Starting point is 00:24:32 no and on 1-14-20 I sent a package to you no this is all fake news this is all fake news this is all fake news you didn't say i haven't gotten shit i haven't gotten shit i haven't gotten shit so i asked you i asked you guys for a new year's resolution for your for your label and you say you got nothing so you think you honestly think you have the perfect label so anyway keith yeah let's talk about since let's talk about some of your favorite tapes from this year that other labels put out yeah i was well when we you told me about
Starting point is 00:25:18 this i was looking at all the tapes that i had and i only had a few how many there was downloads of tapes that i had a lot of like 10 maybe what you've been illegally downloading these things but the uh this is a bootleg i do have soul seek no i've downloaded these on band band camp so the one I mentioned was the arsonist on Unifactor I really like that's a great bundle oh you got that right there I got it right here I was quick on that
Starting point is 00:25:55 yeah Unifactor killed it this year where are they from they've been putting out a lot of good stuff is it a Cleveland right around here yeah oh yeah who is it a cleveland right around here yeah oh yeah who is it tim you got some insight it's jason jason garich from cloud nothings oh and uh cloud nothings isn't cloud nothings like a indie rock band yeah independent rock and roll so this is independent rock and roll well they have like a duo where like a free jazz duo where it's just jason and
Starting point is 00:26:29 the singer of cloud nothings and they put it out on car park car park i the guys are like yeah we'll put out that on vinyl and they did a limited run of their duo yeah because but me and jason did uh did a set together movie a couple years ago, and that was fun. He just played drums, and I played electronics. Do you think that Cloud Nothings has, like, do you think they make a living from music? Is everybody hearing Keith like he's a robot?
Starting point is 00:27:07 Yeah. Because I'm really, I'm just wondering as he's doing this canada vision i can't tell if keith has like shitty wi-fi or if this is like art if he's doing art to us right now like did he figure Should I leave? Should I exit? No, why would you? What are you talking about? I kind of like how it's doing that. We can still understand you. Thank you. © B Emily Beynon © BF-WATCH TV 2021 The End So what is Orange Milk doing next year? What do you got coming up?
Starting point is 00:30:38 So this is what we were talking about is we were trying to limit ourselves to like 10 releases next year because people have told us that we put an overwhelming amount of stuff out. Well, how much did you put out in 2020? I think we did 15, around maybe 15 albums. So you think people think it's five too much? Yeah. Okay.
Starting point is 00:31:06 I've got five of those. Yeah. I don't know. What are your thoughts on that? Astral Spirits puts out way too much. How many a year? Astral Spirits has at least 25 or 30, and that includes Astral's editions, which...
Starting point is 00:31:22 Is it really that much? Yeah, several a month. And then there's the vinyl, too. let's not say that i think we should probably go and hailey sends me and then he just hands me like a handful of like 15 more and i'm like you gotta be fucking kidding what about hasu mountain does hasu mountain put out too much good but it's just too much they didn't put out that many this is like one a month hello max we don't see you we only do we hear me hold on hold on we got to be able to see uh that's part of it max yay hey max what's going on man my phone Maxwell, how's it going? My phone is at 1% battery, so it might die at some point.
Starting point is 00:32:06 Okay, so we'll make this quick. What was your favorite tape from this year? Hurry up. My favorite tape? Yeah. Oh, my God. Hurry up. Hurry up.
Starting point is 00:32:14 Come on. Come on. What was it? Come on. You got to tell me. You got to tell me. What was it? Zero.
Starting point is 00:32:20 There's zero. What was it? You got to know what it was. It's probably this tape. This this groupata tape on astral spirits we were just talking about astral spirits oh what's up tim hey actually pretty much astral spirits gets my like oh and keith yo some chinese food right now oh that looks good let me get dave get a screenshot of that for the camera me get dave get a screenshot of that for the camera get a screenshot yeah get a screenshot of that
Starting point is 00:32:49 everyone get a screenshot everyone get a screenshot wait so what what were your guys favorite tapes i don't know i didn't i don't play favorites i don't blame yeah we don't do that Mac sorry we would never we were actually what is this all about was this tabs out and the year bash or what is this I don't know I saw this meeting somebody somebody emailed it to me
Starting point is 00:33:17 I thought I thought I thought you invited us I think what happens is we're all here and i think one of us is going to be murdered and then that one it's like mafia dave's got a good one yeah this andrew weathers ensemble tape oh right hell yeah talk about a local hero oh yeah that's pretty good I think we lost Max he's done that sucks because I was going to ask
Starting point is 00:33:56 Tim who was it better to work with Orange Milk or Hatsu Mountain and I was going to have them they were both going to be staring them down it was going to be so hard to answer. I think it's better to put something out on Howl's New Mountain because Doug does the label full time. Doug, it bends over backwards.
Starting point is 00:34:16 I like it when I put out my own tape this year and when I went on tour last year, like all on my own sort of stuff, I just emailed Doug constantly. I'm like, who do I send this? Who do I send this to? And who do I talk to in the city and everything? Doug always has an answer. Should we should we mention your tape, Tim? Because I don't think anybody's mentioned it yet i did a taste this year yeah yeah amblyopia number wow oh it was my first like self-released uh full length in a long time um i think the one like your village like proper full length i did was number four well i've done seven years well i enjoyed it.
Starting point is 00:35:10 I'd say that whole book is on my 100,000th. Okay, Mike. Jamie, ever since you touched this mic stand. I've never been to your house, Dave. No, this was at Tabs Out HQ. I let him touch it.
Starting point is 00:35:31 Are we going to talk about our favorite tapes? Yeah, you want to talk about a favorite tape, Tim? Go ahead. Yeah, I was trying to show you this earlier. It's the Joey's Goof World. This has something to do with Aaron Dilloway. And perhaps someone related to him. I'm not exactly sure.
Starting point is 00:35:50 But he is this Joey character. Just made this weird tape. And he makes all this art. I got to show you this art. Okay, Mike. Look at this. What is this you're showing? What is this big drawing?
Starting point is 00:36:05 What is this drawing're showing? What is this big drawing? What is this drawing? Hold that still. Is that cave art? That looks like cave art. Why do you want to hold it still, Jamie? What, are you trying to make a copy? Are you taking a screenshot and printing your own? Jamie's been making really bad bootlegs
Starting point is 00:36:20 by I just hold up the J card to zoom and he just takes a screenshot and prints that out. It's actually kind of cool. When you think about it, it's kind of cool. I'm sad that Joe's not here because the song I wanted to play it's called Joey Heads
Starting point is 00:36:37 to the Bar. Go to Joe. I wanted Joe B. That could have been a whole thing. The joke all year was Joe B is just knocking him back. And by the end of the show, he's in quarantine. Give him a break. Give me a drink, bartender.
Starting point is 00:37:28 Give me a drink, bartender. Give me a drink, bartender. Give me a drink, bartender. Give me a drink, bartender. Bartender? Give me a drink, bartender. Give me a drink, bartender. Give me a drink, bartender. So what is it? Is this a Dillaway adjacent tape or something? No, it's not him, but he's the one that sent it out.
Starting point is 00:40:20 There's a cloak of mystery around Joey. So it's not him or we don't know? It's not him. You know it's someone else but you don't know who. I guess I don't know for sure. Nobody does. Zero. There's zero. Tonight on Unsolved Mysteries.
Starting point is 00:40:37 I like that. What's that? Just a little drawing on the front? It looks like a child. It looks like a child has done it. Yeah, perhaps. That's like the Joey logo. This one was a really limited edition, like 30 copies or something. Orange Milk, you would
Starting point is 00:40:54 never allow artwork like that, would you? Hold up the art again. Hold up the art. Let Keith look at this. That's off-brand. Keith, would you even allow that? Can you even brand that?
Starting point is 00:41:09 Actually, put that back up. Keith, what would you do to this? Put an orb on it? Put a window on it? What would you do to it? Yeah, I'd put a cloud. Like a cloud with a key going through it? What would you do?
Starting point is 00:41:24 Yeah, where would you put it? What kind of fucked up twisted shit? Like a potted plant with a puddle underneath of it Yeah there's only a set number of things I can create in Photoshop What's up? Well which one? Are you doing the eyeball or drip?
Starting point is 00:41:40 So eyeballs, clouds drips What should I add to my repertoire that's a good resolution 2021 like three different profiled like uh angles you can only do like straight ahead or to the side and that's it the thing is i'm not i'm not kidding at all this is absolutely true like it took me like months to just learn how to do clouds and now i can and now i can make clouds you know you just build up a repertoire do you think you like a you have like various folders just like clouds grass yeah words you want to share your screen and give us a
Starting point is 00:42:28 little walkthrough no it's i'm good hey keith i'm just wondering do you think you'll do like a joy of tape design kind of thing where you just walk people through how to make a cassette cover in 30 minutes every episode make a new orange milk cassette there you go look look up on youtube look up making art with keith rankin yeah that's the the eqy cover right there's two episodes of like super boring me just going through all my layers in photoshop so that you don't i i distinctly remember you don't name any of them. Yeah, you were mad about that. I'm not mad. It just makes me very anxious.
Starting point is 00:43:10 He called me up about it. Sounded mad. He says he's not mad, but he sounded mad when he called me about it. And you were very mad about it. Ryan Mastello, let's get back to tapes. Have you talked about a favorite tape of yours this year? Have you done that? No, I don't think so. Would you like to?
Starting point is 00:43:31 There's so many. There was 199 tapes. 199 tapes that came out this year, yeah. I'll give a couple. Look, with Keith and Seth there, I gotta say, Galen tipped it, man, that is.
Starting point is 00:43:49 I'm going to also shout out Orb Tapes. You guys like Orb Tapes? I like Orb Tapes. Yeah, I can't think of anything. I can't think of what they put out this year, though. Oh, my gosh. So, all right. I got two of them on my top list.
Starting point is 00:44:01 Now I got to look at it. Alex Merbach, will the low E be there? Still be there. Such a long, long name. Women of the of the poor folk music that's awesome such a good tape uh so yeah there you go or tapes Thank you. I'm going to go ahead and do that. © BF-WATCH TV 2021 Thank you. The The The The The I'm sorry. I don't know. I'm sorry. so Thank you. so
Starting point is 00:48:54 so so so Thank you. I'd say that pole both is nice and I'm I'd say that pole zero I'd say that Tim you're taking it too far
Starting point is 00:50:13 you know I give you a little bit you're just taking too much yeah step it back you know I've always wanted an episode that was all soundboard.
Starting point is 00:50:27 Yeah, but it can't be yours. You can't bring a brand new soundboard and then expect to get like... What do you guys do? Take it and do something crazy to it? It is funny. It is funny that they're so long. I think it's part of what makes them funny.
Starting point is 00:50:43 Mike, I'll talk about some batches. Yeah, you want to talk about some batches, Jamie? Whole batches. Who put out the best batch? The freshest one. I got two small batches, two tiny ones, and I got a big batch. I've also got a reissue batch.
Starting point is 00:50:59 We'll have to all vote on that one if a reissue counts. Well, one of them isn't a reissue, actually. Wait, you have a reissue batch and one's not? All right, we'll come back to this later. This is already too complicated. You've already confused me too much. Jamie, you go on with yours.
Starting point is 00:51:15 The first one, Dave already touched on it. Galta put out three tapes this year. One was my favorite one about Max Zuckerman. Yes, sexy music sexy music chef kiss chef's kiss yes and the other two were a billy and dave tape and a windows tape uh the next batch that i really enjoyed was wait go back to who are those other people i don't know billy and dave or uh oh billy and dave i see that's like uh on the shays Lounge one or whatever. Yeah. Yeah, it's David Lackner and Billy Robinson.
Starting point is 00:51:49 Who else? Who would it be cool if it was two different Billy and Dave? Yes. Seth, pick a different Billy and Dave. You're no fun. You're no fun at all. Keith's probably got like four or five of them. Billy Sheehan and David Lee Roth.
Starting point is 00:52:05 I got a million. He's got a ton of them, but he won't share any of them. Nobody registered zero. You didn't ask me. And who was, and I won't. And who was, who's Windows? Windows is another david lackner project um it's him and i gotta i gotta look it up i gotta look it up him and camilla paget coals playing like the singing bowls i believe it's it's more of an ambient you know you can't play that on this show
Starting point is 00:52:45 do something crazy to it do something crazy to it that's the only batch that Gall to put out this year it's just three tapes okay the other batch I wanted to say was small batch another three tape batch Timble Tapes by Scott Schultz oh shit
Starting point is 00:53:00 I got this Adderall oh you got it there too Matty look at this Adderall. Oh, you got it there too, Matty. Look at you. Adderall Canyonly. Oh, that's the one with the dude like mowing the... What's he doing? Mowing a sidewalk on the cover? It's like that or it's like a metal detector or something. Is that a metal detector?
Starting point is 00:53:18 What is it? I don't know. This is Tiny Little Hammer's art, isn't it? Probably. I think he's mowing. It's not a metal detector. Not a metal detector. I got to get a straight answer on this.
Starting point is 00:53:31 If that's a metal detector or if he's... Is the identity of Adderall Canyon Lee secret? Are we still doing that as adults? I don't believe so. Are we still doing that? I think he revealed it. Yeah, we should do that. Thank you. Thank you. that that timbal batch i'll do it could i could i go to bat for it real fast yeah please please do um another dada centennial is boodles of fun that one especially the back side where he just remixes it by adding like a little dub effect is
Starting point is 00:56:11 stupid silly loved it this uh the adderall tape though there's many moments that sound like uh when you basically try to stand up too fast and then you get lightheaded and want to die and it's quite an achievement he knows how to end his tape really fast or do some quick snap away. Big props. How many registered voters are on there? I'm going to compete with all this.
Starting point is 00:56:37 I'm done. You're good. Do you have the same Behringer mixer that Mike has? No, this is all through my sampler. I exclusively use Behringer. Fancy. Seth, what tapes do you guys talk about?
Starting point is 00:56:54 I have like four, but one's not from this year. So it probably doesn't count. But one I bought. Wait a minute. Stop, stop, stop. Get the one that's not from this year and take it out. What? That was from this year.
Starting point is 00:57:11 Get the one that's... No, this one's like... I like this one. This is an Astrid Sonne live tape that came out this year. She's a composer, I think, from... Is it Copenhagen? I don't know. But it's... her playing live in Berlin in 2018, but the tape came out this year.
Starting point is 00:57:33 I don't know. Keith and I are both pretty big fans of hers. I really like her work. I like that one I like this Jacob Sachs Michelin that just came out on Mondosh how do you say that?
Starting point is 00:57:53 I never knew it was pronounced that Mondosh? I call it Mondosh but I don't think how does everyone say it on three on three on three we'll all just say it one two three mondo now we're way off we're way off we're gonna try again that didn't work i have more one two three mondo no no there you are
Starting point is 00:58:24 again we're off just by a little bit. Last time. This is the last time. One, two, three. Mondo. I think we got it that time. All right, what else?
Starting point is 00:58:40 Keith. Or Seth, I'm sorry. It's okay. I'm the same person. I have this another one from Mondo how do you say it now I feel like you said it differently that time I have this one also
Starting point is 00:59:00 Mondo's the Antonia Nwaka but I actually am biased because I saw her play live in poland and it was incredible and so i just immediately bought the tape and i like the tape but mad props to her because she's incredible live and then um this one's not from this year but it's called sour and it's called slow burn and i but i got it this year uh it's easily probably like the weirdest live it's the weirdest music i've ever heard and the tape is weird as fuck like it's just weird i got i don't know so i i just kind of respect
Starting point is 00:59:43 when people can get so weird that i'm just like i don't i don't know i So I just kind of respect when people can get so weird that I'm just like, I don't know, I'm confused because I've heard a lot of weird music in my life. Your tolerance level, your tolerance for weirdness is really high. It's got to really fuck you up. Yeah. No, I understand. Yeah, you've seen some twisted shit, Seth. You have seen some twisted you've seen some twisted shit Seth you have seen some twisted shit
Starting point is 01:00:05 I would imagine like I would imagine you have like Vietnam dreams but they're like the M. Sage cover instead and you just like wake up like I had and the orb you think the orb's after you
Starting point is 01:00:21 no man you've seen some fucked up shit I'd imagine it takes a lot. © transcript Emily Beynon © transcript Emily Beynon Who just joined us? Who's this? Yeah, iPhone. Who's iPhone? Who's iPhone? Are we getting photobombed? Oh, boy.
Starting point is 01:02:37 Who is this? I was requested to attend this meeting. And who are you, my friend? Is that Doug? It's PK. It's PK from German Army. Yes. You can drive
Starting point is 01:02:54 and talk on Zoom, right? Are you driving right now? Yeah. I'm literally wearing a German Army shirt right now. It's true. We saw it. A Giuliani shirt? Yeah, Ryan Mosteller always wears his Giuliani shirt when he podcasts.
Starting point is 01:03:11 So, PK, I'm not surprised that you're driving while you're guesting on the podcast, considering you would have to multitask with all these goddamn tapes you're putting out. How many tapes did you put out in 2020? Over 100,000. Are you serious? Yeah. Oh, my goodness. And if I could get to my soundboard quick enough, it'd be applausing.
Starting point is 01:03:43 Are you there? We can't really hear you. Yeah, I mean, of course I'm driving. This is San Gabriel Valley. This is all we do is drive. I just went to get some food. The whole county shut down again, so. Why?
Starting point is 01:03:58 Cool. I don't know. You tell me. He got a virus. I don't know. So what, are He got a virus. I don't know. So what are you going to make, like 18 more tapes in quarantine or something? No, because I'm working like 60 hour weeks. That's why I'm driving to get out of the house.
Starting point is 01:04:18 Basically, there's not 60 hours in a week. Yeah, we just drive in circles because, you know, there's nowhere to go. Nothing's open. Oh, no. Yeah, yeah. Is there a message you want to get out in case, like, you don't make it? Nope. It's cool.
Starting point is 01:04:42 Wait, are y'all literally podcasting right now isn't it i don't know if you can officially say that okay good yeah cut everything out but we go you want us to cut all that out we'll tell talk about german army then yeah um what did you put what was your what was your favorite what was your favorite day from this year that you did? Favorite German Army tape. I've already forgotten them. Zero. I don't know, man. Zero. A double tape you did.
Starting point is 01:05:13 I'm coming back from San Gabriel because I was recording broken escalators for a concrete-colored tape release. Concrete-colored paint tape. What do you mean you were recording? You got to talk to me like a child. I'm more of a traditional music guy. Drums, guitar, bass. So, you like horns?
Starting point is 01:05:38 No, I don't go that far into the outsider arts. What do you mean you were recording broken? Broken escalators sound like a guy doing some free jazz horn. Are they moving? Are they still moving? I can't play horn. What's that? Are they like moving still?
Starting point is 01:05:55 Yeah, yeah, yeah. Yeah, so they're just moving, but they sound like horn jams. How are they moving? What's powering them? I don't know. Escalator? Escalator juice. I don't know, man.
Starting point is 01:06:09 Escalator juice. Escalator juice. Thank you. Thank you. I'm not sure. I love it. Maxwell Allison, you're back. Hello, sir. I'm it. Maxwell Allison, you're back. Hello, sir. I'm back. Yeah, yeah. My phone is alive. What's up, y'all?
Starting point is 01:09:12 Keith and Seth are in the house? Yo. Oh. What are you guys talking about? Well, earlier, we were talking a little bit about tapes. Earlier, I was asking Keith and Seth if they had a New Year's resolution for their label and both of them thought they ran the most perfect little label and it had nothing
Starting point is 01:09:30 to change but I was wondering if you had any insights for Hasu Mountain of any New Year's resolutions for the label well I know me and Doug honestly have been talking about like slightly less releases like definitely making sure we're not doing like more
Starting point is 01:09:48 than one or like maybe two a month hold on hold on more attention to each one and kind of like wait wait what is how many how many a year do you think is the right amount because we already have orange milk on record well i think we have like last couple years we've done like 15 a year so and what are you doing now maybe we might aim for like like a good 12 you know what i mean like oh chill and and also we can kind of like we've already got like three of them done basically so in terms of like production like it's all made and like ready to go so that means that we're kind of already set for like up until the end of march basically you know so it'll be easier to get things like in the
Starting point is 01:10:37 pipeline and moving you know that kind of thing max i feel like we've had this conversation so we're saying the same thing yeah it's true it's true yeah yeah we used to do a thing where we'd like they put out like three tapes and if it's like you know we found that the batch isn't good for like people's attention spans kind of it's some some just kind of kind of get lost in the shuffle you know so no more batches probably more LPs unfortunately although tapes are the best duh doy
Starting point is 01:11:13 I can't believe you would come on here and say this kind of stuff more LPs we're doing more LPs yeah trust me I see it all slipping away I see it all slipping away from me everybody's moving to CDs and LPs now I see it all slipping away. I see it all slipping away from me. Everybody's moving to CDs and LPs now. I see what's happening.
Starting point is 01:11:32 I'm not quick enough to make the shift to a CD LP podcast. Dude, CDs are hot, man. I know. You don't think I notice it every day? They're easy to make and they're cheap and people are starting to buy them more. And they don't sell? I'll buy your CDs, Tim. I got a question. My thing put me on the spot earlier,
Starting point is 01:11:50 so I'm going to ask you the same question. What label is easier to work with, Orange Milk or Housey Mountain? For you personally. For me? Yeah. I mean, I've only released one thing with with orange milk i think it's pretty easy to work with house and mountain because i just do it all myself and then it's done so that's the i would i'm just i mean i have to say honestly mountain because it's just a different workflow i can like
Starting point is 01:12:18 you know like we're releasing that sharkula mux tape next year and I'm just doing it all myself. I can't believe you're throwing them under the bus like this. No, no. They were super easy to work with also. They're amazing dudes. They're my good buds and I love them. I just asked you that as a joke.
Starting point is 01:12:38 No, no. No shade, bro. There's a trap question. Yeah. I said the same thing. no shade bro no shade that's a trap question yeah I said the same thing I said how to easier to work with my batter's about to die by the way I got 3% here so we gotta get whatever
Starting point is 01:12:55 whatever you want to get out about tapes you gotta get out right now the best stuff from 2020 you have to just say it right now what do you guys like about tapes I love the colors of tapes I love the designs i love sketches for winter the warm bass yeah the warm bass responsive tapes oh yeah whoa i know that guy i actually don't know that guy but i know his music what's that guy like orange milk friends what's what's isn't like an older guy the maharaja sweets guy he's yeah richard richard's amazing yeah richard is uh he's an unofficial tour guide of new york and he gives tours that are like uh um like private tours of new york that
Starting point is 01:13:41 are insane wait so put so... Put this up. You mentioned that Max was talking about Maharaja tweets because I don't think anybody actually said it. No, I have tape. You showed it. Don't worry about anything making any sense. I love that tape.
Starting point is 01:14:02 That's such a good tape. It's such a good tape. It's such a good tape. I like the one about Coney Island. Is that on Oxtail? This is on Oxtail, yeah. He reclaimed Coney Island for himself. I cried when I listened to that. I'm not even kidding.
Starting point is 01:14:17 No, it's really good. I straight up just cried. It was so good. I think it helped that I knew him. I don't know. It was very emotional. Really good tape. Yeah, I love that tape.
Starting point is 01:14:35 That was a good choice. I should have put that in there. Now I feel bad. I just got it. You can't add it now. You're going to let it change it. He's part of Orange Milk. He's part of Orange Milk.
Starting point is 01:14:44 So I didn't think it qualified. I didn't want to pick non-orange milk stuff. What was the last thing you put out by Maharaja Sweets? It's been a while, hasn't it? We put out Something's Been Lost, which was last year, which is incredible. That was a cool scene. Yeah, it was a good one. Oh, yeah.
Starting point is 01:15:07 I like how PK is still here driving with his iPhone facing the top of his car. You still alright in there, man? Yeah, I'm just I can't multitask that well. Please don't die because of this.
Starting point is 01:15:28 I'm just listening. I love the Zoom glitches. Yeah. Honorable way to go out on a podcast with a bunch of dudes talking about tapes in my car. You know?
Starting point is 01:15:46 Very honorable. It'll be very honorable. It will be. Alright, well I got like 1% power left on this thing, so I should probably end this call. Bye everyone. Thanks for hanging out for a little bit. I'm gonna eat that food that I made, but I'll
Starting point is 01:16:02 talk to you guys soon. Is that Cast Iron, Max? Yeah, bro. Good patina. Good patina. How many registered voters? The air had cooled a bit and dried out somewhat. Let's go to the pier.
Starting point is 01:16:18 We all walked over. A huge cross-shaped pier filled with Puerto Rican flags and fishermen using whole chickens as bait. Others tossing mesh crab traps. Others illegally diving off the pier. Some gambling. A man selling cans of beer out of a grocery cart. Another man riding a bike selling peanuts. Another woman selling diced mangoes on a stick, looking flowers. Also a makeshift memorial. Also kites soaring way high, maybe a mile up. One dollar round bread battered fish cake, fresh as the ocean below us and saltier than the hot dogs.
Starting point is 01:17:30 We watched the sun set behind the buildings by the dock. Outdoor dance party. Electric glasses. Electric braces. Talcum powder. No splinters. Thank you.
