could handle this it's tabs out cassette podcast oh what did i say you just said tabs out episode
175 175 do you want to try it again?
Just do it again.
Don't feel any
pressure.
I can nail this.
I can nail it.
That's okay. It's not embarrassing.
Go ahead.
It's a natural human function.
Tabs Out cassette podcast
episode 175.
I kind of typically do it. I have a little bit more pizzazz. It's like Tabs Out cassette podcast episode 175 i kind of typically do it i have a little bit more pizzazz
it's like tabs out cassette podcast episode number 175 i kind of come into it like that i don't
appreciate you messing up so much because this is a very busy episode it is busy i have a lot of
tapes last time we opened up there was a whole stack of mail over here yeah your floor is nice
and clean i vacuumed it and everything it got the i saw much residue from the tapes i
some kind of a plasma i think that i i had to redo the entire floor okay buffered it i buffed it all
out but we opened up these tapes and there was there's a shitload of tapes how many good ones
do you think uh at least five good ones three there were more than five there's a lot of good
ones i at least i have a bunch of good ones i have
like i probably have a stack of 10 tapes here i want to try to play you brought a few tapes
we'll see what we can get through later on marcia fish is going to join us
oh yeah oh yeah gay hippie vampire just started a new record label what is it called it something
scary activated skeletons
skeletons more than one yeah more than one and they're activated
okay i don't really understand what that means
but we'll talk to them about all that we'll see what's going on but first let's jump into some
of these tapes jamie do you oh yeah i let... You already fumbled a little bit there with the intro.
Do you think you can even handle...
Well, there's a tape I've been dying to play on the show.
Oh, yeah?
Yeah.
Looks pretty good.
It's this Dear Laika tape.
Plu Perfect Mind.
And I ordered it from NNA.
Wait, this isn't an NNA tape.
It's not an NNA tape. I was going to say, this looks... I was going to say,, this isn't an NNA tape. It's not an NNA tape.
I was going to say, this looks nothing like an NNA tape.
I ordered it from them, but it is not from NNA.
It is licensed by NNA.
What the fuck could that possibly mean?
I'm not a businessman.
I know a little something about business,
and I got to say, I'm getting a little upset
with all these business terms being thrown around.
You know what I saw earlier in J-Card?
Mixed buy.
Well, it's when you move some sliders around.
No, I thought that was mastering.
No, no, no, no, Matt.
Yeah.
You got it all wrong.
Either way, what is it?
NNA Tips, you said they've acquired this label.
I don't think they've acquired it.
I think they must have bought all the stock from the label that put it out and they did
some acquisitions but they have acquired this label I'll tell you what I did a
little research before the show because I thought that this tape was not on
anybody's radar and apparently it's been written up in Pitchfork magazine it's
been released on vinyl what numbers did it get on Pitchfork?
Oh, I didn't... I should have looked that up.
Look it up, because I'm not playing if it didn't get more than, say, a 5.
I'm not going to be the podcast that plays a Pitchfork 4.
There's no way.
And I'm sorry, Dear Laika, but that's just how it goes.
Okay, it got an 8.0.
That's not bad.
Very good.
It is a really good tape,
I will say.
It's got some prepared
violin. That's a pretty big violin.
Here's that word prepared
again. And thank you for telling me earlier
that it was prepared violin, so I was ready
to play that sound clip. I'll do it again
just in case anyone missed it. That's a pretty big
violin. So, again
with this, here's another word
prepared we talked about this last time now they're preparing the violin and the piano
good job i probably have a few piano any other instruments uh
yeah it's full of musical instruments
um this looks cool i like is this dear like on the cover face kind of obscured by an abstract
pattern of some sort i was gonna say yes but i looked up pictures of them and i'm gonna say no
now so you were gonna say yes and then you're well i'm glad you thank you for looking because
on the band camp there is a picture of this person and does not look like that to me but
you never know what they can do with the Photoshop these days.
This table was also mixed by one person, mastered by somebody else.
Well, I mean, if you're going to get in Pitchfork, you've got to put together a professional package.
Yeah, that's actually, you know, you make a good point.
I may talk a little bit of shit, but Pitchfork has yet to give me anything close to an 8 or any other number.
What do you think about these glitter shells?
Let's hash this out once and for all.
Well, I love the glitter shells because it doesn't get the glitter all over my hands like all my kids' school projects.
I always get glitter all over my hands.
So I dig it when it's encased in the resin or however they do it.
I don't know how you put together a shell. see art you know our apothecary oh yeah they just put out a glitter bomb tape that is i think
it's filled with glitter it's kind of funny yeah it's kind of funny it's pretty scary it's kind of
rude they like putting out stuff that ruins your cassette deck yeah i don't think i have a few of
them up there.
Very busy, though.
We can't... So, Dear Laika,
what's the name of this tape
and what label is it on?
Plu Perfect Mind
and just going by memory,
I think it's called
Memorials of Distinction.
Did I get it right?
Memorials of Distinction.
You...
Are you sure?
You did.
You got it.
This label has been acquired
by NNA Tapes.
I'm not sure
if the label's been acquired.
It might have just been this one release.
You think it's just this one copy?
It might have been.
You think just this one copy of this tape, NNA Tape.
Very rare.
Very sought after.
NNA Tape has licensed just this single copy, and this is an exclusive.
Oh, yeah.
All right.
Well, then I'll play a few tapes.
Okay.
How should I do this?
Should I just start grabbing them?
Should I pick an order?
I would just grab which ones catch your eye.
What's this one sound?
What's Dear Like a Sound like? In three words.
In three?
I was going to say a little bit like Wise Blood.
There's a lot of lush orchestral stuff,
but then there's also moments that are a little
bit less lush and more experimental um a little bit more like modern classical type you know
plucking and all that kind of stuff i said three words so describe in three words i gotta say that
was absolutely more than three words give me three you know what never mind we're moving on i'm gonna play the stress orphan tape oh raid it's a stressor no rent records out of philadelphia
has been it's none of my business but they've been on one lately that one's that one's crazy
have you heard it or is it are you are you doing like a cold listen or have you heard this one yet
the stress orphan tape yeah well it's a c10 so yeah i put in the time i listened to it didn't take very long yeah i've taken shits that lasted
longer than this tape but not but like you know i i i tend to yeah maybe i'll be a jerk and i'll
be like why put out a tape that's so short put out something longer maybe maybe i'll be like it's
stupid to put out a c10 or anything like that but i don't know something i'm just i'm having a moment
with this tape jamie don't make me i don't have to explain it to you well i listened to a little
bit of it and it nearly blew up my speakers when i just played it off bandcamp when it came out and
oh my goodness it is a wall to me yeah it's quite a wall eric
trude from i at one point lived in baltimore i don't know if he still does haven't kept up with
him he's in brooklyn you have been keeping up with he played one of the final friday shows on twitch
really yeah did i know that no i didn't watch any of those i gotta be honest i didn't i just
couldn't get into the into the Twitch streams and stuff
I'm a tactile guy I need to touch you
The first like two or three were very fun
And then it did start
We don't have time we got a lot of tapes
Raid this tape is called
It's on NoRant out of Philadelphia
I had something written down here about it
Somebody who did the artwork
Now I can't remember what it was
Can I tell a quick story about Stressorphin's performance only because i have to look this up he um his performance on
twitch he did in like the laundry room of his building like his apartment building and he like
had this like really scary like executioner's mask on and the whole time he was playing i really
really wanted somebody to walk in oh no one walked and start doing their laundry but no nobody did
i would have liked it better it'd be cooler if somebody did walk in yeah uh coconut croomer is layout by
coconut croomer so jason croomer and rose actor angle run this label i'm assuming coconut croomer
is what do you think a dog does not sound right no no no but stress orphan he's eric
has been doing this project for like a decade.
Yep. So a little bit more on the power electronics side of things. A little bit more.
Jamie. Okay.
Come on. I don't know.
This is freaking power electronics. Is it? Yes.
It's the rudest,
crudest, loudest
power electronics you're gonna hear.
So mean, so rough.
It's so rude, so so crude you're gonna love it
it's scary yeah uh i'll go in after that let me go to do i want to go to a less scary tape now
can i pick one yeah yeah go for it fuck yeah forbes graham solo trumpet on uh sound holes i saw that
just came out and i've been curious to hear it it did it came out on the sound holes solo horn series yeah and
i saw in there uh john olsen john olsen dan i'm not gonna or dandy used to run excitebike runs
moon miss records and then there's one more there's one more but when you have two people
you already know you don't need to guess the third one and then forbes is the fourth one sound holes where are they from they're from the uk really
yep excellent we've we've discussed before they nail this black and white aesthetic it's always
just not always but typically very minimal on the cover oh it's from a label from scotland please
don't yell but the uk is scotland so i was right. With Brexit, I haven't been keeping up.
Yeah, I dig the art.
Thanks, Dave.
Forbes, Graham.
I've known Forbes for a bit.
Did you know that he was in K.O. Dot, right?
I think he did like one album with them.
One album.
A technically metal band.
They were technically metal band?
Yeah, like goth.
Progressive goth.
They were progressively technically goth progressive goth they were progressively
they were progressively technically goth yeah um i know he was in what bands was i want to say
forbes was in a band called pay the price and a band called amalgamation and that may or may not
be right and also i won't say it on the podcast, because I'm not going to put the dude on blast or anything,
but maybe I saw him mosh naked one time,
like the College Park, Maryland co-op,
like May 20th, 2000.
But I'm not going to put the guy on blast and say that.
Not on here.
That wouldn't be cool.
You were correct about Amalgamation.
You were correct about K.O. Dot.
Really?
He's been in Bathyspear, Calliope Quartet, Construction Party,
Jacob Williams Quartet, Jazz Composers Alliance Orchestra.
That's a pretty big violin.
Very nice.
Yeah, I like this horn tape.
I like a good horn tape where, for a while,
you don't know if they actually have a horn or not.
Oh, he's doing some extended technique.
I see.
No, he's just kind of looking around going,
where is that horn?
He can't find it.
And then maybe he's blowing in the wrong end of it or something like that.
I put out a tape by Forbes Graham a few years ago.
Also a solo horn.
That was it.
Also a solo horn tape.
I'm a jazz nut.
Yeah, you did a few of those, and I've never heard a single one of those.
I want to get my hands on one of them someday.
We don't have time.
Not at the moment.
Not at the moment.
So how does this one compare to the one you put out?
You know, I haven't listened to the one.
I'm going to be honest with our listeners.
I'm going to be honest with myself.
I haven't listened to that tape in a very long time.
But the one I put out is better than this.
Okay.
Yeah, the one I put out is better than this.
Yeah, I mean, you get my fingerprints on it.
Yeah.
And, you know
oh come on
you want to pick another one Jamie?
and then we'll play them?
this is fun I like that you pick a bunch of tapes
I'm glad you're having fun
I am I'm glad you're having fun
my eyes are getting worse
let me see
caveman coming
you sent me a picture of this i oh
you didn't i sent you actually a band camp a band camp link but it is a picture too technically
well i guess yeah the pre so i mean do you want to you want to dissect that a little bit
is it is a link actually we do not have time we can listeners uh vote vote uh is a link a picture
i say it is uh this is the caveman Coming tape, the Sparkle Cave.
I don't know anything about it.
So you didn't listen to it?
I didn't listen to it yet.
Actually, I listened to it a little bit, but I forget what it sounds like.
Typically, I'm up here, and when I listen to a tape,
I like to be alone.
Give me some thinking music.
No, don't do that.
We don't have the time.
But I do like to sit up here and listen to tapes.
But I listened to this one, and I thought thought i'm bringing this one down to my family and we're all going to sit around the fireplace like people used to do like
during the eisenhower administration because this tape i believe caveman coming is the name of the
artist i believe okay and the sparkle cave is the name of the tape it's on FM RL and if I open it
up here now FM are when you say FM it sounds like FM but it's actually e ph e
m yeah am i pronouncing that wrong the femme I don't know I just wanted for the
listeners if somebody's trying to google it yeah thank you're welcome you're
welcome You're welcome. You're welcome. Why do you have a bit of cheese?
Mother of God, it's all toilet sound.
So it was produced, there's that word again,
produced by Ben Dumbled,
who I think runs the label.
Okay.
And lead guitar is by Dan,
I can't see, it's like lime green text on like this pink background, so by Dan.
Exactly.
Mixed by The Farmer farmer who knows what that means
but all songs were written by nicholas dumb bald who i think is a child i think this is a kid okay
and i think it's a kid who is attempting to sound like i'm not attempting doing a good job it's
sounding kind of like a baby lemmy like if they they made the Muppet Babies. Like from Motorhead.
Yeah.
If they made the Muppet Babies, but it was all classic metal people.
Okay.
Then this is what the Lemmy character would sound like.
I'm liking it.
I would say let's figure out who the other Muppet Babies would be,
but we just simply do not have the time.
But I'm going to play the song
Bathtub is the Best.
Because I've had this one line stuck in my head.
So you want to start off
with these four? Yes, indeed.
Let's do that. Let's do these four.
Oh, yeah. Under an ebbing earth's shadow
Breathing in a centuries moldy air, I feel my cheeks become crimson. Insecurities will fully douse it, tailored and well.
Holding a notebook, she carries herself in my mind. Thank you. Avert the gaze, shameful negation
Intestines twisted in longing
For alignment, the epsilon
With the ideal locked under the night. Come, come down.
Get over yourself.
She is still the reminder of love.
Aching with shivers and it's dawning and how special it is
to be submerged in the sight
in temptatively chaos
I built myself in her image
with velvet skin
And water-colored eyelids
This body is no longer granite
A vision of little love
Overtakes me, unwells me, and I'm so happy.
I'm so happy.
I'm so, so fortunate. Just calling my name in your arms
To be at peace with you Oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, Thank you. Caps out cassette episode.
No, no.
You only do that in the very...
I don't have time for this.
Sick block.
I like that Dear Laika tape a lot.
And I'm glad.
I think it was a very smart business move for an NA tape to acquire that copy of it.
And I have a bit of news for you jamie okay so buy a seatbelt from
the seatbelt store and strap yourself in because i do think that's deer like on the cover okay and
like a simple i'm a bit of a private eye uh on the bandcamp page like the cover is right next to a
picture okay of deer like from cold ash uk and like i think that's the same person okay does it
say photograph by and we can email them design and layout by isabel thorn and adam downey so i'll talk
to them okay okay we'll figure we'll get to the bottom of this and we'll have a whole bonus episode
this tape's a big deal now though you know you might have to go through some red tape to get
that information why is it a big deal because we just played it it was uh it's on vinyl i forgot about the pitchfork it's light been licensed by nna
that's it's making moves man stress orphan tape on no rent that forbes gram tape the solo horn
uh and then that caveman coming tape that is a kid right if that's not a kid i feel bad
either that or it's sped up you think i see no i think if you really listen to it i if you have a gentleman's ear like i do you really pay attention to the subtleties um please you would notice uh
all right jamie you want to do another block and before we get marcia fisher let's do one line yeah
yeah okay well what do you want to all right i'm going to pick one from my stack let's see
i'm going to go with this jackson van horn's see. I'm going to go with this Jackson Van Horn tape.
It's just, you know, already dead.
This is catalog number 379.
They're putting out stuff all over the map.
They don't stop.
This one reminds me, you know,
obviously the vocals when you hear them,
they're a little bit Leonard Cohen-like,
a little bit baritone and gruff.
And I don't know, just a cool vibe.
Bought it on one of the band camp Fridays and I dig.
You dig the art?
I don't dig the art.
No, this art looks like an old, bad
hardcore 7-inch. Right before
it looks like a...
Let's see who made it before. If there's somebody who's big and strong
I won't make fun of it.
I can't find out who did the art. It doesn't say.
They left their name out of shame. It it out it's not that bad but it does look like something right
before anyone learned how to use the computer oh it is gray and dismal that's kind of what the music
reminds me of okay it looks like they made it at the library on the library's computer and the lady
was like we're closing you have to leave yeah he's like just let me put one more one more box yeah
that's a joke but to fully describe it like it's black and white and it's kind of bad and it's got
like a few boxes um a silent understanding by jackson van horn where is jackson van horn
from oh you caught you caught catching me with my pants down chicken on a bun oh no discogs
is down no that can't be true i just refreshed and came back up oh my god they said put on a
record we'll be right back you're right put on a record that's like the fail whale for uh discogs
all right jackson van horn a shoegaze post-punk artist
from Indianapolis, Indiana.
So Indiana?
Yeah, not Indianapolis,
like somewhere else.
You should have stopped
at Indianapolis
and left a little bit
of a mystery,
if you know what I mean.
It does say,
I'm not even kidding,
but it does say United States
after Indianapolis, Indiana.
Good, good,
because that was my next question.
Does it say anything about them not having a computer and they have to go to the library to make art you know what maybe the saving grace will be it's on really thick stock
yeah so i'll take out the tape which is a white tape with a black and white sticker on one side
the other side's blank so that's not good either all right but all this guy's pictures are in black
and white this is like an 80 pound
uncoated cover i'll show you okay so this is okay so it's like a thematic thing this is okay
he's a shoemaker you're showing me the same two pictures over and over again
i'm trying to give you a little slideshow effect he is a shoegazer all right i'll allow it okay
how about this imaginary softwoods tape oh you want to play that yeah this tape i haven't
heard them in a while called what is it called let me look it up i hit the wrong button my computer
started clapping it's called so extra bronze lamp a mineral disc which is john elliott's label this
is john elliott's project okay um are you? I'm positive because I looked it up on the internet.
I even have, I got a little note here.
On the band camp, it says that it talks about what the tape mostly is, the static loops and such.
And it talks about how the granulated sources are treated with a filter bank and reticon chips oh and when i saw that i said
yeah you know what i kind of thought i'd recognize the reticon chip
i heard some tapes i listened to and i'm like there's not even any chips and then i heard the
reticon chip on here and i was like me my guys i hate when motherfuckers put out synthesizer tapes and they don't have they got like i'm like
where's the reticon chip oh it's out at the end it's at the end i'm like there's not even any
chips uh but this one's good really good granulation there there's a bit of collage on the
artwork it came with a nice picture of john's cat. Quite a unit of a cat.
I'm not a big cat person, but I'd imagine you'd be very proud of yourself if you owned that cat.
You're almost there.
It's a cat, Jamie.
Play one more.
We simply don't have time for this um a beautiful is this a bronze
naroko case is that bronze or is it gold i don't know because when they show the olympics i can't
really tell the difference between the bronze and the gold yeah is this it's so there's like a bronze
cut out all that there's like a bronze narorelco case and a beautiful what is that a
tapioca shell i love those with the pink imprint it's it's got a nice finger finger uh tactile
response you're talking about around the edges of the tape the texture there i love it get out
of here a little something extra to feel yeah everything about this the the it's very it's
very good now i don't have to explain it any further than that
you'll hear and there's chips the reticon chip is on it ambient noise
let me see if i have anything else to say about that i think this was all
from 2019 to 2020 john elli from the storied trio Emeralds.
I'm still opening this tape and I can't figure out who it's from.
I was making sure I didn't have anything else to say about this tape.
Okay.
Sorry.
I think that was it.
Yeah.
To be honest with you, I kind of want to hear this Longmont Potion Castle tape because I haven't heard this one yet.
Can we play that?
You want to play it in the middle, huh?
Are we allowed to do that?
I was kind of going to just do it at the end.
No, no, no, no, no.
We can.
We can.
We can.
Okay.
You're a guest in this house.
I saw someone, by the way, refer to you as a co-host on the internet of this show.
Okay.
I'm already...
I kind of feel like you're more of a sub-host slash guest.
Like you haven't earned the right.
I call myself a side man. but that's a jazz word i still have like well yeah i dig the art i have that one dave
sound clip i've been thinking about putting together a whole dave soundboard well i have
a personal one of dave that i use just to have conversations with them i think you should put
together a soundboard of joe b's laughs i simply don't have the time. But you should pick a tape.
Okay.
I'm going to pick out this, since I know what this one is now, this modern lamps tape.
Oh, did you look it up right then?
Well, there's a piece of paper inside.
Don't lose the paper, or else you'll never know what that is, because there's nothing written on the tape.
There's nothing written on the spine.
Inside, the flap.
The flap is just empty.
You know what you would think you would think an
archivist like me would not like that but you know why i do why because real heads don't mind yeah
okay because you just see that art and you know who it is i knew this was grant and rachel evans
from hooker vision yeah i knew that yeah looking at the little collage work myself,
and I've seen this style before.
Excellent people.
We just had them on the show, didn't we?
We did.
I think I forgot to ask them any questions.
They had some new stuff out at the time.
I don't think we talked about it.
I actually had them on before.
Oh, yeah, that's right.
Long time ago.
Long time ago.
But they had Hooker Vision going for
what, 10 years or something
like that?
I like that one. Play it.
I'm telling you man, this stuff will poison your mind.
They started the label in 2008.
Here's a little history. Give me some background.
Give me if this was a documentary on
PBS.
And do it quickly i closed out youtube
keep it open keep that i told you buy youtube red and have it on a run on a separate machine
i can't do this that's good you gotta do the commercial first i actually i like this music
this is good so the label started this one's good too this is fine let it go the label started. This one's good too. This is fine. Let it go. The label started in 2008.
The first tape they put out was a compilation in 2009.
And then they stopped the label in 2014.
What is this, like Third Eye Blind or something?
I don't know.
It says cinematic and emotional royalty-free background music.
Thank you for finding the royalty-free.
And then they took a seven year break.
Restarted. They rebooted the catalog
numbers. How do you feel about that?
Is the prefix
different? Yes. I'm okay with it.
What would you...
I would not appreciate if they used the
same prefix and then just started it back at one.
And now there's two tapes called one.
I like how you wouldn't appreciate it.
I wouldn't appreciate it. You're being so't appreciate it. I wouldn't appreciate it.
You're being so polite about it.
I would send it back.
It's like you're a mafia guy.
Just so you know, I wouldn't appreciate that.
You say a kind thing, but the intention is there.
Stop playing this music.
I kind of like this.
You want to just play this for the vlog?
Yeah, this is actually pretty good.
It sounds like 28 Days Later or something.
The zombies are coming.
We simply don't have time for this.
This is Grant and Rachel Evans.
They do Quiet Evenings. That's a project.
This is another project of theirs.
And it's an edition of 25.
These two, you know what they're good with?
Small editions.
You know what else they're good with?
You can just say what and I'll tell you.
Like, putting two random words together, and coming up with a good, like,
like, modern lamps.
Hooker Vision.
What's the name of this tape?
Quiet Evenings.
What's the name of this tape?
I have no clue.
You gotta look on the card.
Lucid Cartography.
Oh, that's amazing.
Yeah.
Like, it's just too, I i love when uh oh when because you know what a real head will do what's that a real educate me
i don't have time for all that but a real head will smush two unrelated words together okay
imaginary softwoods that's how you know a real head. You put two unrelated words,
you smush them together,
you come up with a thing.
It always works.
How about fortitude hammock?
Yeah, that's fine.
Do that.
Actually, someone out there,
if you do a tape by a project called Fortitude Hammock,
I'll make the J cards and send them to you.
And I promise.
And I will.
And I'm a man of my honor and word.
Oh, yeah.
I'm a jazz nut. um these by the way the imaginary softwoods tape and the modern lamps tape looks like they
could be in a a set together oh yeah the collage work they look they they go it's an excellent
pairing it's like chicken and wine that's why i'm so impressed that you can just look at that
modern landscape and just know what it is.
Well, Jamie, I'll teach you more about the real heads later.
So right now we simply.
It's full of musical instruments.
Pretty interesting, but it's pretty damn scary.
How about this?
You know, I feel like I can only pick one more of these.
Right.
And then we'll talk to Marsha.
Yeah.
Yeah.
Let's do that.
Should we do the long mountain tape
sure is it funny is it good it's pretty good yeah you know what we're gonna do the long
mountain okay so how familiar are you jamie with long mountain potion castle
not and don't lie to me because i'm not gonna lie i don't have any of the stuff but i have
heard like clips of it online and it is funny longmont potion castle and it's
been it's been around forever since 1989 yeah the first one came out a bit of a prankster
bit of like uh prank phone calls but like effects on the voice there's a lot of like go to you know
what's going to be funny you know what's funny is explaining people's prank phone calls. You know what? Let's just say that the prank phone calls are...
I won't get into, like, you know,
he has his things he goes to.
His shtick.
His shtick.
He has, like, true classics
that you always go back to.
And the effects on the voice and stuff like that.
Calling somebody and then connecting them together.
I'm not going to explain to you
what prank phone calls are.
Okay.
But Longmont Potion Castle put out number 19,
and we'll just play, like, the first thing from it.
I'm already thinking about it, and I'm laughing.
It's on DU Records.
DU?
DU.
Like, when something's stinky, you say,
DU.
DU.
I was like, oh, Jamie.
Oh.
DU.
Actually, it says he's been putting out recordings since 86.
Oh, well, I'm sorry.
Big difference.
Off by three, well.
He got a virus.
Well, the first tape came out in 89.
And this one's number 19.
There's also on some of them, just Google Longmont Potion Castle.
A ton of it's on YouTube.
There's also, like, music sometimes.
Maybe sometimes there's, like like a black metal song really
there's no chips on this one but it is funny it is a good time and i like when people get really
angry and i like you know google longmouth potion castle alex trebek and listen to that okay is that
like the classic that's classic like i'm not gonna sit here and explain what a prank phone call is yeah it's like
the jerky boys let's so when you call someone you get someone's phone number and you call them up
with nefarious purpose and you say to them, like, hey, jerky.
My eyes are going crazy.
But they don't know.
Like, Jamie, I wouldn't call you and say, this is Mike.
Hey, jerky.
That would be a pretty good phone call.
This is Mike Haley.
I'd like to order 10 pizzas.
Let's try right now, you know what maybe we should explain what a prank phone call is maybe we should demonstrate okay let me call you i don't know if
i have your number you're gonna call me let's see if it works i'll put on speakerphone okay let's
call i'll kind of give me a little bit of um give me an effect over there on the soundboard. Or on the mixer. Okay.
Hello?
Hey, Jamie.
Hey, who's this? Who's this?
Hey, this is Mike.
This is Mike Haley from Tabs Out.
Oh, hey, Mike. How are you doing?
I want to order ten pizzas.
Ten pizzas? I want to order 10 pizzas 10 pizzas 10 pizzas
what do you want me to go to Domino's
yeah I want you to get
10 pizzas from Domino's and deliver them
are you okay
are you okay
this is a prank phone call
Mike hello
it's a prank phone call. Oh, it is?
What is that?
It's like when you call
someone up with like
you call someone, they don't know it's you
and you have nefarious purposes.
Oh.
Like Longmont Pochette Castle.
Never heard of them.
That's funny.
And that, hello? I gotta get going. Okay. Longmont Potion Castle. Never heard of him. That's funny. Hello?
I gotta get going.
Okay, I'll talk to you later.
Bye.
One more ten pizzas.
So that's a prank phone call.
So Longmont Potion Castle does that,
so we'll play a tape of basically that.
It's that, but it's probably not going to be as good
because me and Jamie kind of have improv training
and this person, I think they're all self-taught.
Yeah.
I went to a four-year college.
We don't have time to talk about that.
Let's play these tapes and then come back in
with Marsha Fisher.
All right, sounds great.
Okay. 🎵 I don't feel the stress
I don't know how I feel anymore anymore What follows this mess
won't be different
from what came before
My father died today
or maybe it was yesterday
I don't know, I don't know
Everything has changed, or maybe everything's the same
I don't know, I don't know. I don't know.
I anticipate what's next.
But my conjecture isn't written word.
I should probably expect the same imbalance as what came before
My father died today or maybe it was yesterday
I don't know
I don't know
I don't know
Everything has changed Oh baby
Everything's the same
I don't know
I don't know Thank you. Still alive, I know you won't let go
Stay in this place forever
My father died today or maybe it was yesterday
I don't know
I don't know Be careful to take this chance
I'll be with you every day
So say
I don't know
I don't know
My father died today
Or maybe it was yesterday
I don't know I don't know
I don't know
Be careful, there is change
Or maybe that is the same
I don't know
I don't know The I'm sorry. Thank you. I'm sorry. Thank you. I'm sorry. Thank you. The The The Thank you. The The Thank you. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you. so Hello?
Hey, Travis.
Yeah.
Hey, this is Max Braxton.
What's going on?
I don't know.
You Max Braxton?
Yes, yes. I just moved in.
I'm your new neighbor.
I got your number from my friend at the DMV.
Good friend of mine.
Since we live in the same neighborhood.
How's it going, man?
Hello?
Hey, Travis, man, come on.
Just help me out for a sec, okay?
It's Max.
I don't know you, dude.
I'm your new neighbor, man.
I just live on the same street.
I just have a problem with my garage door.
I just need you to help me real quick.
I can give you four or five dollars.
I'm at work right now, so that's a no, but I still don't.
No.
What street do you live on?
I just moved from Colorado.
Yeah, but you said you live on my street.
So what street do you live on?
I do.
I just moved to Lexington from Colorado like this week.
I can bring you the lever, you push it,
and I'll just tell you when my garage door's
moving, okay? That's all I need.
My friend said
you'd help me out.
How'd you get my number?
At the DMV.
He looked up your number for me.
It's kind of against the law
to be giving out phone numbers at the DMV.
They're not the police department.
So I'd like to know who gave you my number.
Well, be cool, man. I just need help with my garage door. It'll take like
20-30 minutes.
I gave you $5-$6.
$5-$6, dude, ain't worth my time.
That's a pack of cigarettes.
Well, per hour, I mean.
Just be cool. I'll come over
to your house about 5, and we'll just hook up do
not show up in my house you will get a gun in your fucking face just be cool dude this is max
braxton i don't fucking know him max braxton stop calling me hey i'll give you ten dollars i mean Hello? What's going on?
Dude, quit fucking calling me.
This is Max, your new neighbor, man.
No, you're not my fucking neighbor.
Quit fucking calling me.
Fuck you.
I don't want to help you.
Quit fucking calling me.
I'm just going to stop by, okay? I got the door to go up on my garage.
I just need your help bringing it back down
I don't give a fuck about your garage.
I can give you ten dollars.
Call it motherfucker. Put some fucking purse down and pull it bitch.
Dude.
Quit fucking calling me.
Our friend at the DMV is gonna be torqued if you don't help me out.
I don't have a fucking friend in the DMV dumbass. I know who works the DMV. I don't know any of them.
Yeah, Sherman Jump.
Sherman Jump sounds like a male.
I'm pretty sure everybody at my DMV is a female.
Oh, he's 100% male, and he's going to take you down if you don't give me a hand here.
You got it?
So I'm going to stop by in about 20 minutes, and we'll just work it out.
Boom, we're done.
How are we going to work at your garage?
I'll bring you the lever.
You push it.
I don't want to help you. Why don't you call somebody else?
Because you're my neighbor.
No, you're not.
Dude, I just moved down here from Colorado, like I told you.
Then why does your number say California?
I have a cell phone and I have a landline.
Why are you fucking glitching out like you're doing something else?
I am on my cell phone right now.
You want a piece of me?
Yeah.
Marsha, Marsha, Marsha.
Can you hear everything okay?
Yeah, definitely.
Good.
So how are you?
I am...
I'm healthy.
Mm-hmm.
Can we see a COVID test, please?
No.
So we can get in.
We're going to get in.
We're going to talk to you about Gay Hippie Vampire.
We're going to talk to you about a new label, a scary label that you started.
Called, what was it called again?
I'm too scared to say, Jamie, can you say it?
Too scary.
I think it was called Activated Skeletons,
but I'm just going on memory.
Is that right?
Nice.
Jamie almost broke down earlier
because Discogs was down for like five seconds.
And I was wondering if anything needed to be hashed out
about the use of
emojis
on Discogs. Jamie, is that
going to break the system? Is that going to break
the code? No, it
actually already works. Does it really?
Yeah. There's an artist name variation
for the two dads,
two sons. Well, that's what I'm talking about. Yeah.
It's already up there. That's your project,
right, Marsha? Yes. Yeah, that
was my
kind of first noise thing how am i supposed to say this two dads two sons emoji so i have to say
well i mean honestly however you want like i mean they don't have to be two dads and two sons it's
just a group of four dudes so so two big dudes two little dudes two yeah two of the dudes definitely
seem like they need to be responsible for two of the younger dudes well maybe maybe the two big
dudes are dependent on the two little dudes i'm trying to get to this symbiosis i'm trying to get
to discogs right now because i don't even believe it's true that it's up there oh i'll show you
please show me right there let me say i don't like this at all true that it's up there. Oh, I'll show you. Please show me. Right there.
Let me see.
I don't like this at all.
And I'm noticing that some of the titles are also emojis.
Now, that must break the system.
I don't know.
Discogs thought of everything.
So, Gay Hippie Vampire.
When did you start the label?
And did you start it to put out your own stuff like everybody else does?
Hold on. Hold on. and did you start it to put out your own stuff like everybody else does and when and what hold on hold on do you want the label to be kind of obscured do you want
it to be difficult to access there's there are tapes that I have that I don't
know what they are on your label i have quite i have a beautiful like
matrix like system of how i organize my tapes and i have some of their just question marks
so like what well i don't know i don't know like what i mean we can try to figure it out but like
are you no play that one because are you sure? That works out well. Is it your intention for your label, your projects,
to kind of be difficult to access?
Or is that just happening?
I guess that's just happening.
I have no intention on doing that.
I'm not exactly sure what you're what you're talking about really i mean
it's on bandcamp i feel like that says like accessible as you can get for a tape label
yeah you're on bandcamp but like if we go to the bandcamp i feel like there's going to be
now i feel like maybe there's not it's gonna be all it's gonna be all explained it's gonna be
very accessible actually Actually, everything has
stuff written on here.
When you look at these spines, it would beg to differ.
Yeah, let's grab a tape. Okay.
Actually, this is right on it, Marsha Fisher.
And it has...
What is this? Explain this to me.
Because this is just... It looks like...
Where's the camera? Which camera are we using?
Over here? Back here?
Where are you?
When I say not accessible, I don't mean like,
oh shit, I can't get to it.
I'm telling you, man, this stuff will poison your mind.
They locked me out. I'm locked out.
I mean like, this is like a clear tape
with a little band-aid type sticker
on it, handwritten Marcia Fisher.
You better be glad Joe B's not here.
He'd read you the riot act on that.
I'd be very happy about this'd read you the riot act on that. I'd not be very happy about this.
I know I had more
examples of stuff that didn't
say anything on it. Why do all these tapes
say things on them now?
Here's one.
No, it says right inside what it is.
Damn it, Mike.
Hmm.
I wonder why I was confused.
Maybe I was thinking of another label
no here no it says gayist inside there right next to the okay so so you can okay maybe my maybe
maybe my problems with just with the emojis and i kind of got a little bit too
off the rails with it that's okay um well then then uh what are your attentions with gay hippie
vampire i mean it did kind of start out as just something to release like my friend stuff Well, then what are your attentions with Gay Hippie Vampire?
I mean, it did kind of start out as just something to release my friend stuff, my friends and I's stuff.
I want to say there's only three or four releases on the label that aren't queer people from Lincoln, Nebraska or Omaha. from like lincoln nebraska or omaha so i would definitely say like kind of putting like
all of my weird friends and stuff out there is definitely one of my major motivations with it
right now i'm kind of like alienated from all that because i had to relocate to minnesota
so like i don't know exactly where i'm going with it which is like kind of why I
started an activated skeleton just to have like something else scary maybe because my printer
broke okay yeah that happens a lot with labels either you relocate or you're out of toner yeah
you run out of toner it's like fuck well I guess I got started a label yeah okay so gay hippie
vampire then the your connection to Lincoln has been severed for the moment.
So that is why you started...
Activated Skeleton.
Don't say it all the way.
And like, hold my hand when you say it.
It's scary!
Skeleton is scary.
So then what is Activated Skeleton?
Is this one skeleton or several?
It's multiple.
How many skeletons are there real skeletons?
It's one skeleton. Oh, it's multiple. How many skeletons are there? Real skeletons? It's one skeleton.
Oh, it is one. I'm sorry.
I guess it kind of depends on your definition of real skeleton.
Well, what's your definition of a
real skeleton?
I think anything
can be a skeleton if it wants to be.
Okay, that makes it kind of less scary.
Oh, I just got a nice screenshot of that.
Jamie's getting some...
Jamie's getting some excellent documentations.
Jamie, stop!
What are the projects that are you, and what are the projects
that are not you?
Two Sons emoji is
like me, and then all this
stuff.
There's a Seahorse tape on there that I released.
That's me.
But like a camera night is something I have with my husband and our friend Sam, which is like a Sailor Moon themed thing.
Is that this right here?
Yes.
So it's not death metal?
No.
Oh, this was a valentine's day gift it even says to mike on it
we played a valentine's day show and we made those tapes specifically for that show oh that's very
nice very thoughtful i wasn't really intending on putting them up on the band camp but you know
no one bought them oh that's fine so they were hard to access at one
point so actually i was right about it being difficult to access a little revisionist history
going on here nice try yeah like the new label is what all collages you're like is it going to be
all hand put together kind of stuff and this is because your printer broke yes exactly is it really because your printer broke yeah i love it it worked so well that k-ronite tape was like the last thing i
printed and i thought it did really good yeah i mean i can't see any lines and then just after
that just the quality went to shit it started smudging and stuff well sometimes you're gonna
want to do like a, a test sheet.
Like, run, like, the test sheet and kind of calibrate everything.
Yeah, I do that.
And then I, like, I let it, like, clean its filters and shit.
And it still sucks.
It's a fucking...
Can I shit talk my printer right now?
It's, like, right in front of me.
Yeah, I want to know what kind of printer it was.
Get it up on screen.
And have you considered using it for packaging for a cassette?
The printer as a
thing? Yeah, because you've done a tape.
I have one up there. Speaking of scary,
there's a doll, a porcelain doll.
Oh, that's Marcia.
Well, it's not Marcia.
That's a Marcia Fisher tape in the doll.
In the doll. I also have a tape here
you drilled a hole through it and there's like a keychain
hanging from it.
Yeah, no one bought those either.
I feel like I want to revise the packaging and release it
and hope that no one noticed.
Well, do you want to say, what's the link to the Bandcamp?
We'll drum up some action here.
HTTP, what's the whole thing?
Colon.
Okay, keep going.
HTTPS.
Secure.
Very secure.
Very good.
You're going to want it to be very secure.
So it's Https.
Home slash slash.
Welcome.
Jhippie Vampire.
One word.
No spaces.
Dot Van Camp.
Are you sure?
We're there.
So would you consider, maybe if it's just an addition to one,
making a tape where the printer is the packaging
and maybe sending it to just an addition to one, making a tape where the printer is the packaging and maybe sending it to me.
Please.
If I can pull it out.
I just had to spend, oh man,
I just had to spend $40 at the post office yesterday
shipping tapes to Italy.
Oh, my God.
So what tape did you just put out on,
Jamie, what did you say?
Activated Skeleton, Singular Skeleton. Will you play like a Thunder Crash? what tape did you just put out on Jamie will you say it activated skeleton singular skeleton
will you play a like a
thunder crash every time
you say it like
activated skeleton
did we lose this
that's not it that's the ad
oh like a thunder sound
why didn't you just
yeah that so what what tape did you just put out are you ready
i didn't say it yet on activated skeleton what is the first release
uh it is a split between me and no dolby okay uh marcia fisher no dolby split yes oh no Dolby. Okay. Uh, Marsha Fisher, no Dolby split.
Yes.
Oh,
no Dolby's from Italy.
That's why you were,
I figured it out.
So you were sending the tapes to no Dolby.
Only do it when I say activated skeleton.
So Marsha,
what are you working on?
Any tapes for other labels? Right now, yeah.
I should have something coming out on the tapeworm soon-ish.
I've kind of been talking with Mike from there.
It's like a label out of the UK.
That sounds cool.
I've never heard of the tapeworm.
No?
No.
I have.
Mike's heard of them.
Real heads hear about i'm gonna check
your spreadsheet no not now it's embarrassing i'm kind of i have a bunch of shit that i need
to fucking like demo out to labels but i'm it's a drag yeah and enjoy the adventure so if we we
decide to play let's play the activated skeleton.
We'll play your side.
And then you want to pick a few of these.
I don't know what any of these tapes are on Gay, Hippie, Vampire,
because nothing is labeled.
But I want to play the tape that's called Gayest.
I like that.
Where's the Gayest tape?
I thought it was a pink tape.
Am I right with that?
It should be pink.
Yeah, here it is.
So you know what? Let's get into...
Grab that one with the keychain.
We're going to have to do some work. Tell me about this one
with the keychain. Would you drill a hole in this tape?
Yeah.
What are these? Dog tags? A shrinky dink?
Shrinky dink.
What is this? Shrinky dink, and then it's just a little
key tag that I got from Office Max.
And now I have to take this whole thing off
to play it? Yeah, figure it out.
I thought you said
it wasn't difficult to access this label.
I guess.
And then I went to play tape and you literally
said, figure it out. Yeah.
That makes it seem like it's very hard.
I'll just get some
wire snips. You'll be fine.
Actually, i just cut
my fingernails yesterday i can't do it what is this pretty short too avon bird avon bard
yeah what is this it's gay hippie vampire number 25 yeah that's a split between uh two of my bands
avon bird is me my friend sam who's also in camera night, and then our friend
Addison. And it's just like
fucking
shred noise.
I don't know. It's just
I know what you mean by shred noise.
I got it. I got it. Shred noise.
I got it. I got it.
Like free improv
kind of shit. And then Avant Bard
is just me and Sam minus Addison.
Oh, dear.
What side should we play?
I have...
In fact, you pick it.
You know what?
It's rewound to Avant-Bird.
So if I can figure...
Here's what I'm going to do.
I'm going to figure out how to get this hook out.
We're going to play Avant-Bird.
We'll do the two dads, two sons, gays tape.
We'll do this... What is sons gayest tape we'll do this
car what is it
Karen night
Valentine's Day gift
and then do the new one on
Jamie can you say it activated
this
thing too long
yeah
commercial
activated skeleton
skeleton
thanks so much for
hanging out sorry for making you wait so long
oh no it's all good
thanks again we appreciate you
yeah take care
you ready to play these three on
gay hippie vampire one on the new
activated skeleton label
big boy I'm not even afraid to
say it anymore
you're damn right I am.
We simply don't have the time for anymore, Jamie.
We simply have to just play these tapes.
Let's end it. Oh, you know what we should have did?
We should have asked Marsha.
We should have said we needed ten pizzas.
Okay, next time.
Have a lovely holiday.
Alright. All right. so Thank you. so
