Oh
Everyone loves the police tabs out cassette podcast episode 177 177 very good jamie uh i asked you if you had a good
sound clip to come on out with and you said yeah well i don't know if i approve do not know but we'll
move on anyway because we have a lot of work to do we have a lot of tapes to play we have a lot
of learning to do yeah i'm gonna learn something today for once in my life i'm actually excited
about this podcast why is that i'm gonna learn something today are you sure we're gonna have
are you familiar i know you are but I'll just ask you, like, conversationally.
You okay?
Excuse me. Yes.
Are you familiar with astral spirits?
I'm mildly familiar.
Are you familiar with astral additions?
Even more mildly.
Well, yeah, I'm mildly familiar, mildly confused, but we're going to have Jen Powers and Matthew Rollins.
We'll find out.
Depending on who you ask. I didn't ask anybody, so I don't know.
They have just
taken over. They have ascertained
the
operational structure
of Astral Editions, and we're
going to find out what that means later.
But first, you want to play some tapes here?
Yeah, let's do it.
I like that you asked me before we went on,
you were like, I don't know if I'm allowed to play this one.
Well, I wasn't just sure if it was, you know,
following the show's culture or whatnot.
No, it's cool.
I respect that you asked for permission.
I respect that you see me and you know that you need to ask if it's okay.
But no, I think it's fine.
You want to start off with that one?
Yeah, yeah.
I should just fucking tell you no as soon as you start.
As soon as you start.
Actually, I changed my mind and you can't play it.
It's so good.
You're going to come begging.
You're crawling back to me on your hands and knees.
Oh, you know me so well.
You know me too well.
I will.
Okay, I'll tell you what.
You talk about this tape.
I'll get on the floor.
I'll kind of like real slow while you're describing it.
I'll kind of lurch over to you. Okay okay so this is a project that i learned about several
years ago through orange milk um the project called and i'm probably going to butcher the
pronunciation but it's called batale soler i think you got that close enough close enough i think you
got that i don't think there's anyone listening who knows better than that what a stupid son of a
bitch so what is this tape this is a uh you said it's from like 20 let me see if i can remember
you said it was 2013 correct that is correct got it um
on constellation tatsu yeah that's right what's this all about? Well, Constellation Tatsu, for one of their band camp days the other day,
they were selling 10 tapes for $30.
And I jumped on it.
I got a bunch of good stuff.
10 tapes for $30?
Yeah.
So that's 10.
Wait, how many?
10 tapes?
10, yes.
For $30.
30.
Yep.
Oof, Maroon, that's a good deal.
I wish I got it on this deal.
I would have bought some just to do it,
just to be part of the deal.
And some of these tapes are worth something.
The older ones?
You look at these Discog sell prices,
and I think I made a good financial choice.
Yeah, flip some of these.
Do you want to flip them right now real quick?
Let's flip it.
Let's flip them right now.
But this one particularly stuck out to me.
This one was very good.
It's a little wacky.
It's a little new agey.
It kind of reminds me a little bit of a precursor to Fire Tools, if I have to be honest.
Okay.
Wacky and new agey.
Yeah.
All right.
Do you normally see those together?
I'm not sure, and I don't want to say.
Experimental stuff, not Poochie.
I feel bad calling stuff wacky
because maybe they don't intend for it to sound
wacky, but there's a lot
going on. It's a lot of fun stuff,
and it's a lot of good stuff.
What, are you afraid of some of these ambient musicians?
They're going to whip your ass around because you call them wacky?
They take their work very seriously.
Don't give a fuck, man. You say whatever you
want, Jamie. You tell them whatever you want.
Go off on them right now.
You want a cake to plush?
Let me see.
Where is it?
What's going on in this cover here?
There's a lot going on.
It's a very busy cover.
And just like the music.
The music's very busy.
There's tigers.
There's pyramids.
Ladders.
Yeah, this is like someone...
Who was that in the 80s they made the trapper keepers and the folders
lisa frank oh i don't know google that real quick this seems like someone with like
add over and over again attempting to make a new lisa frank order totally and then just starting
over it's and and i'm not afraid to say because i don't give a fuck what anybody does. It is wacky, but it's also really good.
It's really good.
You already know.
This is beautiful.
Yeah.
Wait till you hear it.
Okay.
It's wonderful.
Hold on.
I'll just sit here and wait.
Okay.
What do you got, Mike?
Oh, you want me to go?
You know what?
I'm going to do a double dose.
This is really, really scary and difficult.
It is going to be scary.
So get your finger on that comma.
Because I know the comma plays the thunder, right?
A single apostrophe.
Close.
These are scary and we're scared.
It's a comma, but you just move it down.
I hope you already have pants that you've pissed in on you right now because they will be pissed in again.
I picked up the new batch from the label Dead Gods.
Oh, okay.
Is that the one out of Brooklyn?
Brooklyn, New York.
Brooklyn, New York.
Wait, hold on a second.
Ladies and gentlemen, Beastie Boys.
That's, yeah, nothing gets more New York than that.
Give me another old school New York thing.
Ladies and gentlemen, the Mighty Mighty Boss Stall.
Yeah, man.
Ain't nothing more New York than the Mighty Mighty Boss Stall.
They were from Connecticut, though, I think.
Yeah, New England or something.
I'm telling you, man.
Close enough.
Justin Lakes and Matt Betke running this label.
It's also a store.
It's a store in Brooklyn, which I don't understand.
I'm still looking into it, and I have some of my lawyers,
my legal team looking into
how you manage to operate
a noise cassette
shop with
Brooklyn rent prices.
I'm envisioning... The label's
called Dead Gods. The store's called Thousands.
Thousands of them.
Thousands.
Sorry, that was so loud. That fine i like them loud i'm envisioning the store must be like an abandoned coke machine like a vending machine and they these assholes are just standing inside of it
like a bundle of tapes and other weirdos show up yeah because like they can't be a real store can
it you'd have to sell a lot of noise tapes.
Or there's like some sort of other store that they're in the bathroom of.
Thousands of Dead Gods is located in like the bathroom of like a smoke shop or something.
Which now that I'm saying that out loud, that's actually a pretty good idea.
And an excellent business model.
And speaking of business models, we may need to bring some of this stuff up, right?
Take some notes on how to run a small business for when jen powers and matthew oh that's right
are joining us because they will be i don't know if they've ever run a label before yeah there's a
lot of overhead two scary tapes i picked up well i picked up four scary tapes but two of them i'm them are shred it nerve the name of the tape is performer death one pretty damn scary and then
blind date inter negative these two tapes i love the spines of these tapes are just
they're identical they're well they're all like that. I think every tape on the label.
Okay. I don't know. I don't have anything.
I'm looking on the shelf now to see if I can find them. I can't.
I'm not quick enough. But I think, I'm going to say,
they're all like that. It's like black and silver.
Scary. It's almost like a chondritic sound.
You know.
Old school. Fucking old school harsh noise
over here. You know what I mean?
It looks like an old school bathroom floor.
And it looks like an old school bathroom floor. And it looks like an old school bathroom floor.
But yeah, very scary tape.
Shredded Nerve is Justin Lakes, who does the label.
And Blind Date is Tyler Keene.
Okay.
Is their name.
But yeah, give me one more werewolf sound and then...
Everyone loves the police.
Oops, wrong button. Hold on. wrong button okay so i'm gonna play those
two you're gonna play the however you said yours that tally solaire two scaries one harry all right

so We're back.
That was very scary.
Yes, it was
we're hiding in the closet because of the scary stuff
trouble in my boots
alright quit joking around
turn the reverb off
now you're really
scaring me for real
no now you're really scaring me for real
turn the main reverb all the way up
you don't get to play with it
oh dear
I love when I love Turn the main reverb all the way up, too. Oh, dear. You don't get to play with it. Oh, dear.
I love...
I'm not going to get into it.
I'm not going to sincerely talk about what I like.
Blind Date and Shredded Nerve, two scary ones on Dead Gods.
And then what did you play, Jamie?
How do you say that again?
Batale Soler.
That's how you say it. On Constellation Tatsu.
Very good stuff.
When did that artist
put out something on orange milk that happened too right was it before or after that tape it was
after uh i had it up it was 2015 oh no i'm sorry wait now i'm confused oh wait it was on uh yes it
was on orange milk in 2016 okay it was a re-release this i'm learning
something huh we learned a lot today i learned a lot write this down re-releases write that down
for um when we talk to jen bowers and matthew are who will be here soon no releases from this
artist since 2016 let's bring it back huh yeah i was another project i don't sound bad. Do they do a different project?
Oh, yes.
The artist's name is Asel Robitaille.
No, you got it.
Who would that be?
Asel Robitaille.
Like a southern belle.
That was beautiful.
Why do you love a bit of cheese?
All right, very good.
So you want to start off this next block?
You got another one?
I got another one.
Okay.
Got one from this label.
I don't think we've played him yet.
Uh,
Super Polar Tapes.
We have not played any of them.
Yeah.
This label doesn't send a shit.
What's with that?
he started to send me stuff
just like,
uh,
Seth,
Seth Graham.
Yeah,
what's going on?
I have,
I have a process,
the problem with,
an issue with the process here.
And Tim sent me tapes
the other day too. I just wanted to to i want to out everybody that sends me tapes
come clean out is there anyone else right i can't think of anybody off the top of my head
i'm sure there'll be more yeah don't if you're a label or you're one of these experimental art
maybe that's why they're sending you stuff it's kind of like subversive it's like an experience it's part of the art
oh okay so it's part of the art so sending it to you instead of me is part of the the larger piece
okay that's cool i mean okay you know how cheap it is for um somebody in germany to send a tape
to the u.s it's like dirt cheap how much is dirt though it's very expensive so which makes it
very confusing you're saying it doesn't cost that much to send stuff here no like i sent something
to germany the other day like i sent four tapes and it cost thirty dollars and i think i think
to send four tapes here is like eight dollars let's let's move on what are you playing something
from some cologne from so this is the Bleed Air label.
Let me tell you a little bit about them.
A fellow named Marco Trovatello.
Marco Trovatello runs the label.
Say it in a southern accent.
Marco Trovatello.
Like a southern band.
Yeah, my house of cards kept it spacey.
You're a stupid son of a bitch.
All right.
Anyway, I'll tell you what I know.
I'll tell you the only thing I know.
Limited, right? These tapes are
fucking limited, aren't they?
They are, but I think you're talking about the
Kasingle series. Okay, I'm talking about
Okay. Oh, shut up. I won't say
a word. I'll sit here and be very
I'm retired. Marco a couple
years ago had this idea
to do a bunch of Kasingles and
it's kind of exploded
and he's on the uh it's up to 35 now what do you mean he had an idea to do a bunch of singles what
do you mean so this is a series of limited singles you go to an artist and you say hey okay hold on
hold on you go to an artist you say hey you think you wouldn't be cool about it so you're like
okay and you say uh can you have the same conversation
can you record two two and a half minute tracks for two sides of a c5 and then they say yes i can
wait a c5 c5 that's so short it's so tiny how do you even find those tapes they're so tiny
well they're in germany i'm trying to find a lot of stuff there i'm trying
to let people do stuff like that i'm trying to not be a grouch about it fine you want to do a c5
you want to be a dumbass fine go ahead i don't mind anymore i don't even actually i like it it
was ideal i actually did one not to self-promote but it was it was ideal because i didn't have to
put a whole lot of work into it oh because it's just two and a half minutes on your side yeah and what is it very fun what do
they do like 10 copies 10 copies of each one but this one's a little different because this one's
just an album uh this is by marco himself uh his project called bleed air okay and i decided to
play his tape uh it's kind of like a cosmic space voyage synth synthesizer type
tape can you get the cosmic gumbo sound clip real quick while i'm talking so what you're telling me
is this person does a label they ask artists to do tapes and the artists are like yeah i'll do a
tape and they're like okay you can only do two and a half minute tracks and i'm only making 10
copies and they're like all right i guess and then they do it for themselves and it looks very that
scary for you as an actor to do the script called for it important part of
the journey what are we sorry I've seen every car we'll wait I've seen everyone
naked so you can everyone I can't find the clip but then no it's fine it will I've seen everyone naked I'm sorry you've seen everyone naked
I can't find the clip but that's so funny
It's fine we'll find it
They get no gift
If you get a tattoo you don't get anything for Christmas
Not that year
You think getting a tattoo is good
No getting a tattoo is not good
I don't care about it
But it's not good behavior
That was the wrong clip but that was so funny
Can you get that one on your board so then this person did a tape for
themselves and they made it very very very long it's so big and it's huge it takes up a lot of
space in the room this one's 40 copies and they made four times as many copies it's probably four
times the length too if i have to be honest yeah what a narcissist um that How many copies of your tape did you get?
He sent me two.
That was very generous.
20%?
20%.
Yes, that is...
Yeah, that's how many you're supposed to get.
Very good.
Jamie, please.
And this is called Time Ferocious.
Time, comma, ferocious.
You pronounce the comma in Germany.
And this is the 29th release.
You do?
Mm-hmm.
Okay.
Yeah, you pronounce all punctuation over there.
That's going to be tough, because some of these letters have dots on top of them.
Yeah.
Oh, dear.
Did they come making that shit up?
All right, and then I got to...
You got anything else to say about that, or can I do mine?
I got nothing else to say.
Go ahead.
I lost my shoe.
Do you know the label, No Basement is Deep Enough?
I don't, no.
You don't? Go ahead.
Are you sure?
I forget exactly where they're from.
I'll paste it in here.
They're from...
Antwerp Beograd.
Okay.
And they do...
I don't think they're doing things anymore,
but when they put out releases,
they were like, the packaging was,
it was extra special.
It went the extra mile.
It would be like,
you see that little monster up there?
I do.
They make a little monster.
Well, I bought this tape off Discogs.
It's been on my want list for a while.
And that sucker just popped up and I grabbed it.
It's a Bang Bros Hard Rocks Volume 13
Third Degree Party.
Third Degree Birthday, excuse me, on
No Basement is Deep Enough.
And it comes, if you unfold it here,
hold this tape in the card,
I'm going to take off my headphones for this.
And my glasses.
I like this shell.
This is the packaging for the tape.
Oh, wow. Look at that. It looks like you're getting ready to rob a bank. How is the packaging for the tape. Oh, wow.
Look at that.
It looks like you're getting ready to rob a bank.
How do I look?
Very good.
I'm going to take a picture of this.
Let me put my glasses on.
I can't really see anything with my hair here.
Hold on. Let me hold the tape up.
So this sucker...
I should probably put my...
This sucker, it comes with this mask, like this hand-painted nylon...
Oh, I think it's irritating my skin
it irritates the skin well that's how it's supposed to work but you know we were just
saying earlier off mic how not many people wear masks anymore and i'm thinking about bringing
it back but i'm going to do it with this one yeah yeah just all your orifice is exposed that's the
way to do it now i also like i have another tape i who it's by, but it came in a pair of socks.
So I'm thinking I might get a whole outfit together soon.
I got all the way on the bottom is covered.
All the way on the top is covered.
Buddy, if I get the in the middle part, if I get the torso and all that covered up, I'm stepping out.
I'm wearing my cassette costume, I might call it.
But are you familiar with...
I don't know, because this is in German,
so I don't know if you say the exclamation point.
Bang! Bros.
Are you familiar with that? Bang!
Bros.
That's another one. Artists from Orange Milk.
I'm familiar with them from Orange Milk.
Are you thinking Orange Milk or are you thinking Hasu Mountain?
I might be thinking Hasu Mountain.
They definitely put out some stuff on hasu mountain um they're from what they're one of
these what they're one of these western massachusetts yeah a lot a lot of weirdos i
don't know what's going on massachusetts it seems so normal such a storied past paul revere
duncan donuts you know some respectable stuff. There's many Ivy League institutions there.
That's right, yeah.
And then you get up to Western Mass, and it's like,
all of a sudden you don't know what's going on.
Amherst.
Yeah, what is going on out there?
I don't know.
This came out in 2013.
Oh, shit, which is the same year your tape came out.
There was something in the water.
We both played the tape randomly.
We didn't, like, for the record, did we discuss this prior to we did not we didn't
i don't talk to you between episodes so we did not talk we did not plan this yeah and uh so yeah
i'm gonna play this guy this is um it's a duo but sometimes it's more people it's full of musical
instruments foam is a name associated with it.
Arkham Foam?
Arkham Foam.
Like Batman Arkham?
Like, sure.
Okay.
Arkham City.
Should I keep this mask on?
I'm going to take it off now because it is irritating the skin.
So I'm going to play that one.
And I'm a very thrilled boy.
I'm a very happy little boy that came up in my Discogs want list.
I love, everyone knows this special feeling when you get the email that something you want is available.
Look at that.
I don't know how to pronounce this next tape I'm going to play.
Oh Young?
Oh Young.
How do you say his name?
O-H-Y-U-N-G.
This is a new one on NNA tapes called Imagine Naked.
Each tape comes in its own NNA case.
Classic NNA case, too.
Very nice.
You see the half circle covers?
Because you know what I've noticed?
I notice a few tapes don't have the circle artwork.
I received a tape on NNA, and it just had a regular-ass cover.
Yeah, you can't do that.
I am not enjoying that, but I am enjoying these two with the circle covers.
They did it.
It comes in this tiny pink box that you slide them into.
I believe the tracks are either based on the tracks themselves or the titles are based on the poem that is printed inside the J card there.
Would you like me to do a dramatic reading?
I would like you to do a...
Do you want some
background music? Let's both do background
music. Okay.
Let me find something that would be really...
Oh! These are my
hands... Oh, let me do a little reverb.
Oh, these are my hands now.
A month's worth of moody soil sleeps under.
My torn cuticles like crust on a rake.
Oh, the rake is my hand.
It doesn't span wide, hardly holds octaves.
There's no piano.
My hands hold flora, oh, as suggested by Sue, my previous therapist, no less.
I'm covered in moss, warm shit, and perdolite.
Oh, egg, shell, compost, tea, the aura of the earth.
Pretyork rising, my bedroom a soft, hazy waltz of old vines.
Oh, creeping sprouts and shoots.
That's all I got.
People die!
Keep holding, holding, holding.
Oh, we're talking about the powers.
So, um, didn't the Beatles do something that was like, um,
let it be naked?
That was the one where, i don't i don't
know what it is and they also had a song called imagine right so that was john lennon solo so
but john lennon all right correct me if i'm wrong john lennon what it was a beetle right he was okay
yeah so beatles did i don't know much about music so beatles did imagine yeah so does imagine naked
have anything to do with beatles imagine imagine yeah so does imagine naked have anything
to do with beatles imagine naked you see where i'm walking here you're going i see where you're
going thank you very very many nights thinking about this but this is like i
like i said a new one on nna that's. You know what the hue reminds me of?
It's that Deaf Heaven sunbather.
It's that pink, pinkish color.
You know what I'm talking about?
You're giving me a blank stare.
I don't know what you're talking about.
Oh.
Deaf Heaven sunbather.
It's like a,
what they were calling like Shoe Gaze black metal.
It came out a few years ago.
You gotta check it out.
It's pretty cool.
People don't like it, but I like it. And you're saying it's pink like this? Pink like that. But it wasaze black metal came out a few years ago and you gotta check it out it's pretty it's pretty cool people don't like it but i like it and you're saying it's pink like this pink like
that but it was a black metal album was very controversial why was it controversial because
you putting pink on like making a black metal album like all pink like that oh that's not
talking to fucking nails man it should be fucking scaring the shit yeah that's stupid yeah now i'm
bad now i gotta go listen listen to some angsty shit. Yeah.
Give me something to break.
Ladies and gentlemen, record.
Ladies and gentlemen, record. You gotta be quicker with this.
Yeah, you gotta be quicker with...
Ladies and gentlemen, fine young cannibal.
All right, give me one more.

How are you guys doing?
Great, how are you?
Isn't it weird that we just talked for a few minutes
and I was like, how are you guys doing?
And we talked and then I played a sound clip
and then said, how are you doing?
And you were supposed to act like it was a conversation.
Well, I think we're all extremely professional uh showmen
here so you know yeah oh yeah that that's actually i'm glad you brought up professionalism because
that is uh that is one of the things i want to talk to you about we we brought you here today
we've assembled this this meeting because you guys have just somehow you have acquired the label Astral Editions.
Yeah.
What is going on?
Explain this to me.
Well, so it is still Nate's label.
Nate who also runs Astral Spirits and whatnot.
A couple of months ago, he had asked us,
because we both mutually like and respect each other quite a bit.
And Astral is also Spirits and Editions.
It's one of my favorite group of labels and whatnot that exists right now.
And then they put out Jen and I's last record.
That was the first final release for Editions.
And then came Equipment, Pointed Onk, and now there's going to be a bunch of stuff.
Yeah.
But anyways, I'll stop rambling.
He randomly sent us an email one night,
random to us, I should say,
asking if we'd be interested in taking over the curation of it for a while
so that he could have some extra time
to focus on spirits.
But it's wild because curation's the fun part
of running a label so that's the
easy part too so you guys have no financial like uh risk here you saw all you have to do
is curate the label well yeah i mean we we told him that we that's a good deal we'd gladly do
shipping and help out and do all that stuff too i I wouldn't even have said that. But I mean, it's not really feasible though
because we're in central Ohio
and he's in Austin.
Yeah, so he's mailing all the shit to you and then you're mailing
it all. I wouldn't even do that. I would just
I would. So
for everyone, I
obviously I get it. I know everything that's
going on, but Jamie might not understand.
So I'm looking on Discogs
and Jamie, you might want to pull this up too. if you're on the astral editions discog it says parent label
astral spirits and if you click on the astral spirits thing it says parent label astral spirits
records so like wait a minute i thought it was monophonous press that's another thing and i
don't think is that involved that's not involved anymore, right? That's dead. R.I.P.
Okay.
It's gone.
But Nate and Corey, who also owns Tubby's in Kingston, New York now, which is a really good venue, and a friend of mine slash bandmate too, pandemic bandmate, they were all involved in that.
Are there any rules that Nate handed down to you that said you have to stay in these parameters or do you get to do whatever you want to do?
We get to do whatever we want.
And is there a kill switch?
Is there some sort of kill switch that can stop you if you go too far?
I'm sure that we'll find out.
Do you have a sunset clause in your legal agreements?
No, I don't think.
I mean, this whole thing is we trust Nate and Nate trusts us.
There's no lawyers involved.
So it's a... Do you want me to email my lawyer?
Yeah, tell him I said what's up.
Because also this...
Okay, I can also get in touch with my doctor. can get my doctor on the phone just let him know
you said hi yeah he i mean he seems chill too definitely tell him hello yeah um are you allowed
to change like the layout the style of the label or do you have anything to do with the artwork or
you just you know i i think it was agreed upon with nate you know we're totally happy with uh
with dylan tiny little hammers who does all of the the layout and artwork for editions um
i think the only thing is you know if like an artist has like an exceptionally uh strong need
to like provide their own artwork uh you know dylan's just going to continue handling it he
does great work should we quiz them on Astral Editions to see
what they know? I think so.
Do you have any questions you could ask?
I can probably pull up something here.
What's the first release on Astral Editions?
Digital. It was digital only
originally.
What's the one that I got over here?
This is going to be so embarrassing if they can't get it i'm not i'm not even like awake yet man i wasn't expecting a quiz on this okay i'll
give you an easier question let me put hold on let me look here okay so astral editions number 12
it looks like it's recordings with guitar by andrew weathers what length is the tape? Is it A, 60 minutes?
B, 30 minutes?
C, 20 minutes?
Or D, we have a naive perception of time
and we can't really correspond it to physical reality.
I feel like that's the answer Andrew would want,
but I'm going to say 60.
No, I'm sorry. Both of those were wrong. it's actually a 30 minute cassette it says here wow and they're
just giving you the label huh for for every question that you give us uh for the remainder
of this well what um what are your intentions with the label what do you have you planned
anything yet have you planned the first slate of releases and are those releases going to be cassette tapes and will you be sending us those cassette tapes
i guess you might not know this but just in case we get them all for free they just send them all
yes yes well we're gonna we're gonna stop that from happening right now. Oh, man. No, I'm totally kidding.
Yes, of course, they're going to be cassette tapes,
and you will get them.
We have four of the releases announced for this year.
There are a few more that are not announced yet.
All of them are going to be tapes for the most part,
except when they're not, I guess.
Yeah, we'll be doing some records, too. Yeah, we have
two records in the works, but
way too far out to talk about it.
What's been
announced so far is
Shell's Sunburned Hand of the Man,
Johnny
Coley,
Johnny Coley,
and
Johnny Coley.
These are your first choices this
is your your as well patrick uh your maiden voyage cunningham patrick shiruishi and tom
doing um all of a trio tape coming out too big names anybody know who you are yeah those are
the four yeah i'm trained classically.
Yeah, there's more that we can't talk about.
What are you guys?
You signed some NDAs or something in the jazz community?
What's going on here?
We're just trying to keep it exciting and mysterious.
He tells the first letter.
Oh, can you whisper a clue? Can you whisper a clue just to titillate us?
Yeah, it's Colonel Mustard with the candlestick.
You're really keeping it.
You know, for someone who doesn't want to talk to my lawyer,
you're really keeping a lot of this hidden from view.
There will be a new recording that Jen and I are involved in,
along with a much more well-known individual that may or may not happen.
Bob Dylan!
All right.
We're trying to make it happen.
Well, do you just want to say who it is now?
And then if they back out, there'll be a real dick move.
No, no, definitely.
I'm not doing that to the homie.
Jamie's going to guess. Jamie, guess. Guess a name.
Bob Dylan!
Oh, man.
I just went blank.
I'm going to say Jack Wright, because he hasn't done anything on Astral yet.
No.
What's the answer?
That's not it.
This is going to be a weird
combo that I don't think
people would normally guess.
Oh.
That's right.
That'd be amazing, though.
That would be a great idea.
Oh, Jamie, I think we just made a mess.
Oh, well, you know what?
So Astral Spirits Records.
It's monoph-
What was the main thing?
Monophonous Press.
Then Astral-
Then Astral Spirits Records.
And then Astral Spirits.
Yep.
And then you guys are doing Astral Editions as a sub-label.
Can me and JB do a sub-label of your label?
Yeah, sure.
Yeah, why not?
Oh, we can?
What should we call it?
We can take the E and the A of the logo and flip it around.
Astral Spaces.
No, that's stupid.
It'd have to be better than that. We'll have to think about it. Tabstral Spaces. No, that's stupid. It had to be better than that.
We'll have to think about it.
Tabstral Edition.
That's actually very good. I like that one.
Tabstral Edition.
And I'm assuming that way you guys can
you'll handle all the shipping and the stuff of R
because you already offered
for the other thing. So I know you can do it.
So don't say you don't have the time.
Without a doubt.
So you're going to handle my shipping.
You're going to talk to my doctor.
Your lawyer, too.
Don't forget that.
Well, we're just going to say hey to the lawyer.
Well, I was just going to say hey to the doctor, too.
Maybe his doctor is his lawyer.
That whole riddle.
The doctor was a lawyer.
That's a very smart man.
Yeah.
Or person.
You two just got back from tour not long ago, didn't you?
About a month.
Has it been a month?
It was just four dates, but they were great.
Was it A, a month ago?
A little over a month ago.
How long did you go out for?
It was just like four days.
I think four days is a tour.
I'll draw a line in the sand and say four days is a tour.
It's in like the gray area.
I would say four days is a long weekend.
You did a long weekend.
I think five days is a tour.
You don't know how much space is in between those four days.
Where did you play?
We played in Cincinnati, or well, Newportentucky um and then uh bloomington indiana
newark ohio which is like 45 minutes east of us uh and then pittsburgh okay yeah that's a tour
that's a tour yeah you you probably lost a good amount of money from all the gas and so yeah that
counts that's a tour if you lose money it's a tour
right before the hike we made it in okay it's the sweet spot so we are our tour our uh friends
we were touring with made sure we were taken care of too so that's wonderful we actually came back
millionaires from those four days oh good for you wow it's priceless the experience is priceless
the experience is priceless how would you like compare it to like
tours in the before times and going out and playing gigs because i haven't been out there
i'm still a little too scared to go out there so like what are what was what was it like like
playing gigs in in these weird times it was fine really i mean everyone was respectful i felt comfortable um nobody got covid i mean at
least in the i hope none of the audience members got covid but i'm still surprised everybody was
respectable respectful there weren't respectable those were these shows were like nice kind of like
theater seated shows so it wasn't like the corner
bar, 2am
7 shots
later kind of gigs.
So people wore masks
and they just sat in their chairs and it was cool.
Oh, very cool. I love those shows.
Is that the kind of gigs you guys like playing?
Normally, no.
Yeah, we do. I mean, not
normally that. It's more like dive bars house shows
whatever okay seven shots 2 a.m corner of a sticky floor place video video stores i don't know
diy spots um there's a variety of stuff but yeah this was much more formal than our usual thing um
but it was really lovely it was a great time did you have any um tapes come out recently
no i think our latest was uh um the the trio record with jason garish uh is that how you say that name it's garish yeah very interesting
you know yeah we actually have a bunch of recordings that have not been released that
we did with jason at our house down here in columbus instead of cleveland um like a year ago
i don't really know what we're gonna do with those yet yeah who knows astral unifactor
something entirely different.
Capitol Records.
Yeah.
All right.
Keep going.
Let's do a few more.
Breadsticks.
Great pasta.
So since you weren't doing the label up until, like, you're just starting now, what would
happen if we said, we have this Carol Giannetti andire rose tape live at elastic arts would you be able to like
maybe even just like make up a story about this coming together or something well i mean i can
make an educated guess that uh ben billington probably put that show together and booked it
at elastic arts um elastic arts is a beautiful room that has beautiful shows like the one that's show together and booked it at Elastic Arts.
Elastic Arts is a beautiful room that has beautiful shows like the one that's on that tape, probably.
I've heard it.
I've heard the tape.
I mean, I have, too.
I just don't want to force anyone to have a strong opinion.
I mean, you can just, Jamie, please.
Sorry.
You can just make something up.
No one's checking on any of this.
Claire stopped over our house and then Jen was like,
here, you should have this DMT.
And she did the DMT and then woke up in the middle of a gig at Elastic Arts.
The tapes were just there.
Yeah.
Oh, wow.
Wow.
Good story. wow good story really good story
it just comes together when you're so we don't ever we don't have dmt
so sorry that's fine my lawyer my lawyer can get us some oh great what a guy
the cat's checking us out right now i'm like yeah, this cat looks like it's about to pounce on us.
What's the kitty cat's name?
This is Cath, you know.
Does Cath, you have anything to say?
Probably.
Yeah.
He's really loud.
He's deaf.
He's deaf.
He can't hear what he's saying.
Aww.
He is loud.
He's deaf, Jamie.
You just said that.
But the frequencies are above the range of
human hearing i would say we had some funny sound clips jamie was supposed to be playing this whole
time oh yeah that you totally forgot i was just enjoying uh talking about astral spirits too much
you want you want the rolling yeah
i don't think they can hear it.
I can't hear that one.
I also got this one.
Ladies and gentlemen,
Rollins Band.
I don't think they can hear any of these.
Very disrespectful.
So I'm going to put you on the spot now.
We're going to play, let's say,
three tapes from Astral Editions.
One's definitely going to be this one.
We,
uh,
the,
the live elastic arts.
It's right in front of us.
Do you,
why don't each of you pick one more and we'll play a track from them and tell us why you're
picking them.
All right.
Okay.
They're not going to know.
What's a tape?
Yeah,
I knew it.
Who still uses CDs?
I'm going to go grab the ones that I want, actually.
Oh, yeah, go grab some off the shelves.
Yeah.
They're both gone.
Now it's just us and this deaf cat that came in here.
Cat!
This is mine.
Hold on.
All right.
I have my selection. Stop. all right who wants to go first go for it all right this is a good buddy jr bohannon new york city originally from louisville a very good guitar player. Beautiful solo tape.
Compulsions.
This is a new one, right?
It is a newer one, yes.
He had another record a year and a half ago
or two years ago at this point
called Dusk. That's also really good
but that one was not on Astral.
So we can't talk about it
because every other label is dead to us now.
Have you approached any other labels about curating their labels no we didn't even approach astral i mean once these other labels kind of
kind of get like the idea that you're good at it maybe they'll like hey let them do it
yeah i just want to go to the post office this whole time and my passion was the post office man if we don't if we don't screw this up in like six months or something then then i'll
start talking to another label about doing it too or something i wonder who's going to be
i wonder who well what you guys could also split and each start different sub labels of astral
editions like if there's something you can't like if you're just
like just butting heads on an artist we yeah we definitely want to try to make it as confusing
and as complicated as possible for everyone yeah so well trust me i'm done two albums from every
artist and then we'll we'll have competing sub labels okay i like it i like it i like where
this is going healthy competition
it's marketplace yeah marketplace and also just uh don't forget that payola is never off the table
that's true that's true this is extremely healthy as a couple as well oh yeah yeah yeah
so jen what do you and play that sound clip.
They can't, the look on their faces.
You'll hear it later.
They won't listen.
Yeah.
What did you pick?
I picked Montgomery and Turner, sounds Passing Through Circumstances. This one came out at the beginning of 2021
along with the Haley
Palombo tape and
I think there was a third one that came out
around the same time, but anyway
yeah,
it's just fucking fantastic.
I love this tape. I listened to it so much
last year. I don't really pick
albums of the year
but if i had to side b in particular it's amazing and uh yeah now they're uh nate secured um like a
vinyl release from them on editions all right yeah oh so wait do you so everything i would
figure everything that was slated before you took over would be scrapped
you don't want to like kind of like push your weight around and be like nate you said we can do it we're not doing this bullshit you're not curating it anymore
yeah yeah obviously he picks terrible uh artists and that's why the the label's been doing horrible and he asked us to come save
it for sure so you know yeah they do have his phone number i do we got a prank call
do you want to call him up real quick and
you gotta let him know it's a prank call though call him up and tell him you want to order a pizza. No, we don't need to call.
I'd love to upset his family on Sunday morning.
Yeah, Nate's like a respectable family man.
If he was a degenerate like Jen and I,
then I would gladly prank call him right now.
But I don't want to mess with him on a Sunday morning.
He might still be at church right now.
It is still morning time in Austin.
You know what I'll do?
When we're done, I'll prank phone call Jamie. He'll pretend to be Nateate i'll pretend to be both of you guys i'll get i'll get it all
out of my system then he's yeah as a nice family texas man he's at the church meets rodeo uh in
austin right now oh yeah nice yeah it's 95 degrees and humid oh so where is astral distance from now? Is it from Texas or Ohio?
It's Austin.
I'm never going to be able to figure this out.
Just don't change the color on the spine, okay?
Unless there's tapstool space.
You promise?
Yeah, I promise.
Okay, well that has to be made available because I actually
do have my lawyer on.
We actually have it recorded.
Alright, well thank you guys so much for chatting for a little bit and good luck. Because I actually do have my lawyer on the, on the, we actually have it recorded. All right.
Well,
thank you guys so much for chatting for a little bit and good luck.
Listen,
this is going to be the hardest thing you've ever done.
Okay.
And I just don't want you to,
no matter how much you want to give up,
don't give up.
Thank you so much.
That means a lot.
Really.
We really appreciate it.
No problem.
And if the cat could hear me,
I would say something to the cat too.
He gets the vibe though.
Alright guys, take care.
Thank you. Bye bye.
Have a good day guys. Thank you.
Goodbye.
I still don't understand what a sub-label even is.
It would take me all episode to explain it to you.
Okay, well we're already at the end of this one.
We'll just play these tapes and we'll finish it out.
Let's do it. Alright, well, we're already at the end of this one. Goodbye! So let's just, we'll just play these tapes and we'll finish it out. Let's do it. Alright, bye-bye.
Bye. Thank you. I don't know. I love you. I'm going to go ahead and do that. I don't know. I love you. huh
huh I don set this. I'm sorry. Oh, my God.... That's it. Oh, we, we, we, we, we, we, we, we, we, we, we, we, we, we, we, we, we, we, we, we, we, we, we, we, we, we, we, we, we, we, we, we, we, we, we, we, we, we, we, we, we, we, we, we, we, we, we, we, we, we, we, we, we, we, we, we, we, we, we, we, we, we, we, we, we, we, we, we, we, we, we, we, we, we, we, we, we, we, we, we, we, we, we, we, we, we, we, we, we, we, we, we, we, we, we, we, we, we, we, we, we, we, we, we, we, we, we, we, we, we, we, we, we, we, we, we, we, we, we, we, we, we, we, we, we, we, we, we, we, we, we, we, we, we, we, we, we, we, we, we, we, we, we, we, we, we, we, we, we, we, we, we, we, we, we, we, we, we, we, we, we, we, we, we, we, we, we, we, we, we, we, we, we, we, we, we, we, we, we, we, we, we, we, we, we, we, we, we, we, we, we, we, we, we, we, we, we, we, we, we, we, we, we, we, we, we, we, we, we, we, we, we, we, we, we, we, we, we, we, we, we, I love you.
