Starting point is 00:00:01 Hello and welcome to talking baseball. Sticky stuff, punishments and enforcement and rules have been sent down. And we're drafting players by age. Wow. Hello and welcome to Talking Baseball, the midweek episode. Thank you very much for joining us. It's brought to you by Draft Kings and a ton of special new patrons. Keegan Grace, Chase Flint, Lucas Mangia, Philip Corwin,
Starting point is 00:00:42 Jesse Zamora Andrew Trout with two T's Strike that reverse it Andrew Trout with three T's Caleb Davies Joe Hildebrand and Adam Covenall Thank you very much to those few people
Starting point is 00:01:00 We appreciate you My name's Jimmy His name is Jake And we got BBD in the corner We had a really fun draft plan That we're going to do Because we thought You know there's not much baseball news
Starting point is 00:01:11 And then last night And this morning, we get some really big news, some historic news, some mid-season rule changes unprecedented in a lot of ways. Trevor is in Minnesota at the, is there official name for it? The charity home run derby. Joe Mowers charity event. Joe Mower charity event. I think it might just be Joe Mowers' home run derby.
Starting point is 00:01:36 Joe Mowers' home run derby. He's missing out on the episode on the Sticky Stuff subject, which he has been at the forefront. So whenever he comes back, he'll be running hot. He'll be running hot. In case you have not heard MLB got together and they said a lot of things. But the end result is they are enforcing the rule as originally stated. They said that they asked a lot of players, a lot of ex-players, a lot of pitchers, a lot of ex-pitchers.
Starting point is 00:02:07 They asked umpires. And, you know, the umpires said, hey, it's going to be really tough for, us to draw a line between what's legal and what's not legal when we're just dealing with chemical goop. So you're going to make it a really hard job for us. They said, okay, we will just make it all illegal then. No sunscreen plus rosin combination, no sticky stuff, no foreign substance besides the rosin, which is given by MLB. That is how the rule has been written forever. So they're not changing the rule. They are just saying, we are really going to enforce it now. If a player is caught and they will be checking as soon as players and exit the inning
Starting point is 00:02:48 or exit the inning in between if they don't make it to the end of the inning, they will be checking. Starters will be checked multiple times by umpires. They will be checking the fingertips. Forearms and umpires can check whenever they see something of note. They will also be checking the catchers to make sure they don't have it on their shin pads or their chest protectors applying it. pitchers will be ejected from the game if found having some having it they will be suspended for 10 days with pay
Starting point is 00:03:15 and that's that's the new thing so they just said hard no we're not going to try and dilly dally in the gray area we're just going straight black and white no foreign substance will be allowed so it's it's going to be a wild second half of the season hey jim bbd everyone listening live right now Hope you're doing well. Yeah, man, this is still tip of the iceberg for me. I think this is going to get messier before it gets clean. You know, they're going to start fully enforcing this the 21st, I believe. And, yeah, I mean, there's outrage right now.
Starting point is 00:03:55 Our guy Jack Flaherty tweeting out, like, this is such a miss. We've come across so many baseball players, hitters, pitchers, and it's been awesome. Thanks, everyone, for allowing that. And there has never been one gripe with the sunscreen in Rossin. And taking that is either baseball being so out of touch or, like, they're just trying to get the players pissed off before the CBA. I know we're trying to create black and white lines, and they said they talk to all these people.
Starting point is 00:04:33 I doubt they talk to a lot of people. That's not MLB's strength. This is nuts. Man, I'm so interested to track the numbers come June 21st. I wonder if the pitchers are sending secret messages like, hey, let's get wild. Let's scare a couple of these hitters. We've said for years we've been using this for control, especially the sunscreen and rosen. We had some spider-tacked in the office today, and it is ridiculous.
Starting point is 00:05:01 I literally just dipped my finger in, and five minutes later I was covered in stuff. I knew that would happen, but still obviously had to see it. I don't know. I think this is going to be a mess. I think this is still the start of the story. And I'm excited to see where we land. The spin rate numbers are already coming down. Obviously, you could follow different people for some tweets,
Starting point is 00:05:20 but I saw someone tweeted out the spin rate number since 2018, and they'd constantly gone up, including this season until the announcement, and now they're back to already 2019 levels, which was turbo ball time and all of that. So I'm excited to see the effect on the game. probably good for us because I think it's going to be a level of chaos. But, man, this is a wild mid-season change. That's insane.
Starting point is 00:05:48 Yeah, it should have happened at the start of the season, but instead they did the opposite and basically said, no. And now it comes down on them. I'm fine with it. I mean, we've been saying you can go back and hear conversations that you and I have said about this. And every time you and I just said, I just wish they'd enforce it or change the rule. just do something. So the CBA is coming up
Starting point is 00:06:11 and the league said that they are, because what they've been doing is collecting balls to try and make a new substance that helps with grip but not with spin. They said in one of the reporters had it or in one of the releases, I think it was Passon's article, that they are still trying to do that.
Starting point is 00:06:27 They just haven't been able to perfect and find something that helps with grip but is not a performance enhancer yet. So I still think this season is just going to be a shit show when we look back at it 10 years from now because we're like, oh yeah, that's the season. We're in the first half they gave pitchers, Cardin Blanche, to do whatever they wanted with the ball. Freedom.
Starting point is 00:06:50 They told them they weren't going to get in trouble. And then the second half, they completely changed it and said they can't use anything. And we're like, oh, yeah, that was the one. So the first half was like this, second half was like this. And then the CBA will happen. There'll probably be a lockout for a little bit. and they'll come to a firm agreement on this moving forward. But I think MLB knew that whatever they did,
Starting point is 00:07:09 people were going to hate on it, no matter what. And if they were to say like, yeah, spider attack is this, but the other stuff you're fine with, eh, there's no way to enforce that. Umpires would just be like, fuck that. I'm not going to go lick this dude's arm and find out if it's this or it's that. That's what the report said. Umpires told him, like, that's, if they did that, it just wouldn't be enforced.
Starting point is 00:07:32 Nothing would be changed. pitchers would just be sneaking in and no one would really care. And that's exactly where we lived already. Right. So I think that's what Moby's thought was. Like, we need to come down hard. Next year, we can collect. Why couldn't we put a little sunscreen?
Starting point is 00:07:45 There's already a rosin bag behind the mound. Why couldn't we put a little sunscreen behind the mound? Yeah, I guess so. That I just, you could have, but I don't know if they, if they can tell like goopy or whatever. I think they just wanted to come down hard on this and just show like, this is not going to be the steroid error. We're not going to let this linger.
Starting point is 00:08:06 We're not going to let it get as bad as it was before and say, yeah, M will be allowed this, but now they're stopping, which they have for the last three years. So I think they just wanted to come down real firm. It's funny. A lot of pitchers, a lot of people were saying, like, pitchers throwing without anything on their fingers is going to be like going to hit now without batting gloves on. Like, it's just going to feel like you're holding a different substance. We met pitcher.
Starting point is 00:08:26 Joey Wendell is fine still. Yeah, we met pitchers in spring training that we talked to, and they were just throwing long toss, not even a bullpen. session and they were like yeah i can't even throw a long toss without it and they showed us all the sticky stuff on their hat and their hands and it was like what they're like yeah i can't throw i can't hold a baseball without it and man i mean think think of all the spider webs that tie into this i mean you know it's kind of trade season coming up are there going to be any trades before that june 21st day and you go get a pitcher and then turns out oh he came over his spin rates down 200 miles per hour whoa that'd be
Starting point is 00:09:03 nuts, RPMs. I don't know, man. And what if you are a clean pitcher now? And I'm including sunscreen and rosin as clean because every professional baseball player I've come across has considered that clean. And now, what if you suck? And maybe you don't even use that, you do. But if you have a bad couple starts coming up off June 21st, oh, cheater, we caught one. We got you got her, Jane. So I don't know, man. I think this is, we are still, you know, if this was a 100-day program or fix, I think we're at day like five. And I think this is going to get, well, the irony of this sticky stuff was I think it's going to get messy now.
Starting point is 00:09:51 Johnny Carson, the kids love that shit. If offense comes back, I'll be pretty happy. It's coming back. I think it already has, and I think it's going to be coming back even more. Yeah, I think people have been using the June 3rd day. Yeah. It's obviously small sample, but over that period, league-wide batting averages 12 points higher or something. I want to be shocked.
Starting point is 00:10:08 If the turbo balls are back, I wouldn't be shocked if the balls are not covered in ish now. And yeah, it's just I know pitchers are soft and Trevor Plouffe will echo that sentiment. But to do it in the middle of the season is wild. It's wild. Yeah, I mean, it's their own mess up. It sure is. But at least they did something. They're trying.
Starting point is 00:10:34 They're strong with it. I think people are getting... They'd be mad if you don't mention the 10 days with pay. Oh, those people just aren't using their brains. If they tried to make this rule and say they're going to take away pay, then the MLBPA fights them. And then we get grievances. And then we get counter things.
Starting point is 00:10:52 And then it becomes a fight that it's not about. So they get 10 days with pay the first time. And MLBPA said, yep, we are... are okay with that because they fight enough. Yeah. If they tried to take away pay, then this doesn't even happen. There's no way they could do that. Those guys hate each other.
Starting point is 00:11:10 So, yeah, a lot of people were so upset about that. And it's like, what do you want them to do? You're mad because they... They don't live in the details. Mad because they overstepped and they're taking away the rosin, but you're mad that they understepped and they're not finding them pay. So you just wouldn't have been happy. Never.
Starting point is 00:11:28 Ever. M.OBPA had to like agree with this. and not, they're already fighting grievances. So, 10-day suspension with pay. Dude, it's- We already know the biggest punishment of all is having to live with it. Yeah. You know, that's what Houston got.
Starting point is 00:11:41 Yeah. Yeah. I mean, I'm sure the, I'll think the league minds that a lot of the conversation is, oh, the players aren't even really getting punished. They're not losing any pay for it. So that's all. If they were to do that, there would be more outrage. I think having to pay them the 10 days is a small price for them to be able to get public
Starting point is 00:11:59 perception kind on their side of there. I didn't get the people. saying like, well, whatever, you just finagle it. So, you know, you stretch out a guy on a six-day rotation. Like, dude, guys don't want to get ejected and suspended. Yeah. And then miss a start and then come back. Like, that's not ever going to be a professional athlete's mindset.
Starting point is 00:12:16 Well, you know, what if, like, the pitchers band together and we get a first week where everyone's getting tossed for sunscreen and rosin? I don't think that's going to happen. Or, again, these rules have already existed. they just never been enforced. Yeah. So we've seen the MLB do dumb handshake memos around. Guys might still be doing sunscreen and rosin,
Starting point is 00:12:39 and there kind of might be a handshake like, as long as you don't do the funny crap, you're going to be okay. So that's what I want to see, because I think there's a few pitchers out there that we talk to the same guy at a spring training, and he said, without it, he, like, literally cannot throw a ball. And he's a guy who's had a good, good,
Starting point is 00:13:00 MLB career. No hints. Trevor Plouf. It's Trevor Plouf. He does pitch. He does pitch. Yeah. So we'll get Trev's take on it. I know that he's upset about the sunscreen and Razen as well, but I hope he's a little bit happy that they actually did something because he's been clamoring for it forever. It's a step in the right direction, but the timing of the step and the overreach is
Starting point is 00:13:21 classic MLB fashion. Yeah, I don't mind the overreach. I think it'll be back to normal next year. And this year's like first half pitchers. second half hitters. We just fucked up the whole season anyway. But they needed to do something. We'll see if umpires actually do it. You know, some will.
Starting point is 00:13:38 Maybe some won't. That's the other thing. They should tell umpires they get a new rule to enforce. Same rule, though. It's going to be wild, man. And you wonder if there's like handshakes behind the scenes and, you know, if two respected starting pitchers go up to the hump and say, hey, we've agreed to sunscreen and rosin, you know, there's,
Starting point is 00:13:58 it's a gentleman's sport to a degree. It's going to be wild. Wild. Pretty exciting. They said a lot of pitchers are just doing bullpins without anything right now just to see how they can pitch. Hope I'm good. Hope I'm good at my career. Oh, wild.
Starting point is 00:14:13 Wild shit. So, yeah, we'll have Trev on here next episode or whenever and get his opinions. Hot. But we have a draft that we're doing. It's brought to you by, what is this? I should probably do this one first. Yeah. It's brought to you by Manscaped.
Starting point is 00:14:28 This draft brought to you by Manscaped. Are you ready to unveil your BeachBod? No. But I will be once I get the Manscaped in my hand and trimming my downstairs. A razor and formulation kit designed for the brave men out there who like to go to the skin when they trim their balls. Your new nickname is going to be Bald Eagle after using the ultra-smooth package. So code talking at Manscape. What we're doing here is drafting a team every position, one DH, one starting pitcher. you cannot draft. Hey, for everyone that's just, you know, has the podcast on as background audience right now,
Starting point is 00:15:33 you've tuned us out. Wake up because if you miss this section, you're going to be real confused moving forward. Wake up. Okay. We each need a player from each position. You cannot have a player that is the same age. Only one age per player. You need five guys of your 10 to be.
Starting point is 00:15:55 29 or younger and five guys to be 30 or older. This might be a very easy exercise. It might be a very hard exercise. We're actually interested to find that out. We don't. This is as of their age today, June 15th as we record this. Yes. So we will choose the draft order by writing random numbers down on a piece of paper.
Starting point is 00:16:21 We've been drafting weird stuff on our weekly radio show, John Boy and Jake Radio, for a while now. And this is the system we've come in place to determine the order of the draft. I have written down a random number. Joe's BBD and I did something similar to this on Wake and Jake. We did all international teams. That was fun. One per country, right?
Starting point is 00:16:45 So thank you guys. Thank you guys. Okay. So we're all writing down a random number one through 100. Jake, what did you write down? I wrote down seven. Wow, low. I went high, 81.
Starting point is 00:16:56 Okay. And I honored Trevor Plouf for his birthday The day we're recording this 24. Happy birthday, Trev. The random number is three. So Jake going low, helped him out. So he gets the choose if he wants the first pick, the second pick, or the wraparound, 3-4.
Starting point is 00:17:12 Snake draft. Hmm. I think what I'm going to do is take the wraparound. I would have taken that as well. I'm going to do the 3-4. That's what I would have done. BPD, you have the next choice. A quick look at the board I may just make sure.
Starting point is 00:17:33 Yeah, I guess I'll take number one. Okay. So I get put... It's mostly the getting a break that I kind of like. Yeah, I get put in the torture chamber of being in the middle seat. You guys choose two. I go, you guys choose two. I go.
Starting point is 00:17:47 Okay. All right. Well, here we go. Young. Big baby David. Big baby David. You are up first. You please tell us the position.
Starting point is 00:17:57 The person, the position, and the age of your choice. Hmm. Whoa. You know what? So I should probably track this, right? Combination of an age and just how good he is. I will take Fernando Tatis, number one. He's 22 years old.
Starting point is 00:18:17 He plays shortstop. Tatis. There are a few 22-year-old, so it's not necessarily the most. But he's so good and everything. I've got to. justify. I got you. Fernando Tadis.
Starting point is 00:18:29 Yeah, if we could. There's a best player in the world who is an age that a lot of people are. Community tracking section, which Jim's getting up right now. Yeah, no, Tatease makes sense. You know, you mentioned there's a couple good players that age, but also the position and who he is. It's a solid pick? Yeah. So, again, if you zoned out a minute ago, so BBD will be out on short stops and he will be out on 22-year-olds.
Starting point is 00:18:57 Yes. There will be no more for him. All right, so I'm up. Jami Sandwich. You made a much more organized spreadsheet than we did when we did this similar game. Well, the internet went out. That's why I had to stop using Google Sheets. I'm good.
Starting point is 00:19:14 But it also wasn't going to be this organized. I put my own name down as Joe's. Yeah. Which is a little bizarre because I was talking about how Joe's was in the whip around. All right, let me go to my other board here. Who's your big board here, Jim? I have a big board. I did...
Starting point is 00:19:32 You got into the game here. I did a decent amount of research. Confused as to where I want to go here. I know that feeling. Another stipulation was they have to have played this season or, like, be playing this season. Example, Justin Verlander, if you really want an old pitcher. Like, we don't, A, we don't know what he is anymore. Like, I guess that's a good old thing
Starting point is 00:19:59 But he's not playing this year He's out Yeah, okay I'm gonna- He was on my board because of the But I guess I would have thought he was legal It was a good stipulation With my first pick
Starting point is 00:20:09 I will be taking Right Fielder Ronald Akunya Jr. It's a good pick And he is 23 years old It's a good pick So that helps me out Get a young 20-year-old there
Starting point is 00:20:23 I'm even going to go a step further And color code these picks This is huge. So we know that they are young. This is huge. Great picks, guys. Under 25. Under 25. Under 29 will be yellow.
Starting point is 00:20:37 Over will be a different color. To me, I thought this would happen. I thought the youngest talent would prevail because, you know, it's limited at that age. Okay. I am going to check two guys' age. I'm pretty sure I want this. guy. Ooh, ain't that it.
Starting point is 00:21:01 Okay, I'm going to do it. He has been the best player this year, and I don't think it's much of a discussion. I'm taking Vladito as my first baseman. So that means that if I have a 22-year-old on my board, I have free pick. You guys cannot choose another 22-year-old, which I was going to take Vladito, but I didn't want to give you the freedom of another, of a 22-year-old. So I went with the 12th. Jimmy, I've always got the freedom of a 22-year-old.
Starting point is 00:21:30 I need you to know that. When I wrote down my top 3-22-year-olds, I... Yeah. I mean, these people are smart, but... You're going to be able to wait on somebody. Glad leads and hits, homers, rivies, batting average on base, slugging OPS. Total base is OPS Plus. He would have been my first overall had I had first overall.
Starting point is 00:21:46 And intentional walks. So I'm happy. I'm happy with that. And you guys know I'm an elitist. Everyone looks at me and says, Jake, you're so elite. I'm taking de Grom I you know He's a neutralizer in my head
Starting point is 00:22:02 He's very good at the sport So he is 32 right He's 32 turns 33 in a couple days Wow Snagged him for now Okay so that's our first 30 year old on the board So one young one old We'll see if I do that pinball effect
Starting point is 00:22:17 Or if I'm Don't even know the words I'm saying So that's what I got Nice good for you Thank you I'm gonna take Mike Trout. He's good.
Starting point is 00:22:32 He's going to be my center fielder. I'm going to take Trout. Now, he is a 20-year-old, so I do have two 20-year-olds. I need to get some 30-year-olds eventually. He's in his 20s. He's 29. Yeah, yeah, yeah. Part, you know, you have to have five, 29 or younger, so he's going to count as one of mine.
Starting point is 00:22:47 Jimmy is going to have a good outfield. Yeah. So I'm taking Trout. Okay. My center fielder is 29 years old. Center field 29. Ooh. to the what
Starting point is 00:23:02 Okay I am going to take I'm going to take I'm going to take with my next pick a catcher whose name is J.T. Real Muto and he is 30 Okay
Starting point is 00:23:22 good pick I would have thought when I was doing some research this morning I thought he was still 29, which kind of didn't matter until we did the new rule, but getting the, it crosses an over 30 off. He made the turn. Good pick, BBD, good pick. And I get.
Starting point is 00:23:41 Get another one. And I guess I think I'll cross one of my obscure ages off the list. Okay. Give me Nelson Cruz. He's 40. Okay. He turns 41 soon, but it kind of doesn't matter. It's not a big competition for those ages.
Starting point is 00:24:00 D.H. He's going to be my D.H. I thought I'd want Cruz, but the D.H. It gives you a little less late game flexibility, but I think this game, I don't need that as much as I did in the international draft if you want to check that out on Wake and Jake. Oh, add. Yeah. I think I'll be able to plug and play. Nelly obviously comes up. He's still a slugger. Wonder if he becomes
Starting point is 00:24:22 a trade deadline piece this year? That could be a lot bit of bit of fun. Old man Nellie still does it. but yeah with how many guys we're drafting I don't know if you need that range but it allows you to it keeps years open it keeps years open okay um if it helps me late
Starting point is 00:24:41 Bd you have Tatis Real Mudo Cruz right now I have Trout and Acuna 2 under 29 I need to work so I'm going to take with my third pick third baseman Justin Turner he's 36
Starting point is 00:24:58 So I need someone in the upper 30s that's elite at their position. And he is one of the best third baseman in baseball currently. Like that. So it's a good combo there. I get above and I get a good player. That's a good pick. Thank you. That's a good pick, Jimmy.
Starting point is 00:25:22 It's a good pick. Thank you. It's a great pick. Thanks, Jake. I appreciate it. It's a great pick. Good ball player. I don't know what else you want to hear, man.
Starting point is 00:25:31 He's a good ball player. I appreciate it. I appreciate it a lot. Okay. Okay. So let's see. Open board here. A lot of ball players I like.
Starting point is 00:25:42 What a ball player does. As my good man, the coach would say. All right. I want to get good positional value here. I think what I'm going to do, and this might surprise some people, but it's a thin position, and I love this guy. And I mean, you know, in this world, I get him healthy. I'm taking Byron Buxton.
Starting point is 00:26:14 How old is Buxton? He is 27 years old. Okay. He is 27 years old. Center field, you know, people forget how thin of a position that is when he is on the ball field, I mean, it doesn't get much better than that. So I'm taking Buck Daddy. And with the wraparound pick, let's see, I want to get a damn power player.
Starting point is 00:26:41 You just made me so nervous. I was like, fuck, Centerfield is thin. You got a trap. I forgot that I already grabbed Trout. Okay. Okay. Now I can wait and figure at Centerfield. Yes.
Starting point is 00:26:54 But the ages might fuck you over. Yeah, that's true. No. I got to find a guy. Been there. Late at the bar. Okay, I think I want this guy. Quick age double check. Discount double check.
Starting point is 00:27:13 Ooh, perfect. Just snuck into the old man graphic. I believe this guy is the class at his position. I will be taking Nolan Aronado, who's 30 years old. 30 years old and 60 days. Yep, that's your third baseman. You have Aronado. Yeah, bam.
Starting point is 00:27:36 That was the hesitancy I was working around when I went with the JT pick. I had Aronano as a 30-year-old. No one called anyone a J-T. Now, people might be wondering, whoa, Jimmy, you said you wanted Turner because he was in the 30 category and played third base. When Aronado was available, also in the 30 category and plays third base, I'm taking Garrett Cole as my pitcher and he is 30 years old
Starting point is 00:28:00 and I did not want to lose him. Smart. Reminder Cole currently has a 231 ERA. He's good. And is very good at throwing a baseball. With Steggy Steph on it, we'll see moving forward. We'll see when this game is played. This is, uh,
Starting point is 00:28:16 we'll see when we get all these guys organized. We'll see if all these guys. He might be older. If we can get them to the back alley in time. Yeah. So I am taking a call, which I like because now I have two in the 20s and two in the 30s. So I'm kind of, we all, or Jake, you have that as well. Yeah, I think that's, I think my brain just needs that.
Starting point is 00:28:39 Easier math to go every other. Okay. BB doubles, they call them. Now you guys, I can wait on center field, third base, starting pitcher. Yeah. Questions, what do I want to do? You're going to get into some age binds, though. Yeah, well, I've got some pitchers that I know I can go to.
Starting point is 00:29:04 Okay. I need to get into the outfield game. I will take boogie bets. Mooky bets. Mooky bets. How old is he? He's 28. 28.
Starting point is 00:29:19 That guy's so young. That's stupid. You're putting him at center? Um, for now, yeah. I mean, I guess I can slide him later. Okay. Is that allowed? That's how we played our game.
Starting point is 00:29:31 I think so. Okay. As long as it's like fair and in the realm. He's 28? Mm-hmm. Okay. And your next pick? My next pick?
Starting point is 00:29:44 Oh, can wait on third base. I will... Oh. First BB squeak. Uh, ooh. I'm going to do it and make sure to take care of the age and everything. I know I just talked about how I can wait on third base. I will take Raphael Devers, who is 24.
Starting point is 00:30:10 Ooh. Okay. I like him a lot. Okay. I tweeted if I was a Red Sox fan, I'd be such a Rafi guy. Mm. Because I'd just really enjoy him. Sure.
Starting point is 00:30:21 Okay. All right. Um. I don't have another 24-year-old that I penciled in. Okay. I'm up. Let me make sure this is. kosher on my board here.
Starting point is 00:30:33 It is I do not have a 26-year-old. I do not have a DH. I will be taking Shohei Otani as my DH and a 26-year-old. And I'm happy to get him this late. You could slot him in as your pitcher. You could... There was multiple ways to get Sho-hay.
Starting point is 00:30:55 So I didn't know if someone was going to snag him. B.BD. He could snag him for his pitcher, but I think he's waiting on pitcher, but I wanted showing on the team. So he is my DH. I have 3 20-year-old get people and 2.30-year-old. Ain't that it? Like in my team so far.
Starting point is 00:31:16 I like that, Jim. I like that. Okay, so I need catcher, second base, shortstop, left field, right field. I think what I'm going to do here, Um Let's see This guy is Yeah
Starting point is 00:31:37 So I have a A 25-year-old I like Gross Um He's got an MVP in the bag I am going to take Cody Bellinger And I'm going to have him play
Starting point is 00:31:53 Rightfield Okay He's 25 He's 25 Yeah That's too young MVP in the bag gold gloves, silver slugger.
Starting point is 00:32:04 The fuck. Not bad, right? 25. That's a kid's a ball player. What I need to keep track of is overlap between you two. Like, does BBD have a 25 year old? It's tough to keep track of. We've all drafted a 30-year-old.
Starting point is 00:32:18 I think we've all taken two above 30s, right? Yeah. Okay, I just had my... Wow, there's really not a lot of overlap. I just had my first mini-age dilemma. It's fine. I'll move on from it. I'm starting to play the game.
Starting point is 00:32:35 No, like I just, I had to double check some things and make sure it fit. Oh, I've had a couple of those already. Yeah. I have regrets. Regrets. I kind of have a few. But then again. So, because of some age stuff and, I mean, getting away from what had been my strategy,
Starting point is 00:32:59 and another low-key thin position, especially some of the guys who age I like. I am going to take the little monster Ozzy Albies. He is 24 years old. He put him at second base. Nice. 24, huh? Yeah.
Starting point is 00:33:17 This is depressing. A little bit. And yeah, there's a couple other second basemen in play. I had some age restrictions. See if you guys run into that. We'll see. I'm jealous of you guys. guys getting to choose two at a time. Yeah. Oh, for sure. Because I'm just like over here,
Starting point is 00:33:35 like, I know exactly who I'm going to pick and I pick him in my turns over. I'm taking him Tuve. He's going to be my second baseman. He's 31 years old. So now I have three in their 20s and three in their 30s. He currently has a 2.1 war on the season. Every other good second baseman is 30 years old. So I couldn't take them because I already have Garrett Cole. And you guys already We have 30-year-old, some interest in who you get for second base. I know. I think I know who BPD's getting. Yeah, but it's odd, you know.
Starting point is 00:34:07 A lot of the top second baseman in war are all 30 years old. So as soon as I took Cole, I knew I was getting those out of there. So Al-2Ve's 31. I'm taking El-Tu-Ve. Okay. Now, where to go, where to go. I, he's off the board now. took my 28-year-old
Starting point is 00:34:33 So they're all gone All gone Damn I just By taking out too I cancelled out Another guy that I won as bad
Starting point is 00:34:43 But I nixed out Some players there There's some 31-year-olds That Fuck Yeah Okay I should have thought
Starting point is 00:34:51 Way harder About that pick Damn We're starting to get in the bind We're starting to get in the bind We're starting to get in the bind I should have thought way harder I'm not too upset
Starting point is 00:35:01 but I just wish I gave I still might have made the same decision I just wish I would have given it some full thought If it makes you feel better I was gonna take him at this pick I don't know that makes me feel better Yeah or worse because like You might have made my decision easier
Starting point is 00:35:20 Yeah I might have I Whohoohoo I will take Another in I think. Okay.
Starting point is 00:35:34 He is, oh, do I want to save? BPD has three in the 20s and two in 30 or higher. I will, first I will take a 29-year-old outfielder whose name is Aaron Judge. Yep. On my board. He will play right field for me. You're really young. You need to start picking off some old people.
Starting point is 00:35:57 You're only allowed to have one more 20-year-old. Yeah. But I did most of my prep work on pegging some old dudes that I think I like. Can we clip out pegging some old dudes? I did most of my prep work pagan old dudes. Is what BBD said, I believe. Put it on a T-shirt. That's what Got said.
Starting point is 00:36:16 Then at first base, this is true. At first base, I will be taking 34-year-old Jose Abrail. Okay. That's a good pick. Yeah. That's a good old guy pick. Thank you.
Starting point is 00:36:36 Good old guy pick, BPD. There's another guy had that I always forget how old he is. That could have been there. But that position, not that pick. Okay. Back to you, right, Poppy? Yeah. Now, yeah.
Starting point is 00:36:56 There's like a, there's some places, I don't want to give away too much, but I always think it's interesting for people that are trying to follow along. Sure. I'm pigeonholed in some positions. and but I feel like just because I'm pigeonhole doesn't mean I should force it now.
Starting point is 00:37:12 Right. And I don't have a shortstop for those keeping track at home. And I need someone that's, okay, I will be taking, there's two guys here that I can take and it. I really have to think. Think about it. Okay. Let me be in the wrap around.
Starting point is 00:37:39 sucks. Being not the wraparound sucks. Or yeah, being in the middle sucks. And then what other position do I need?
Starting point is 00:37:44 I need a left fielder. I can't take that age. Can't take that age. Don't really want him. You guys took him. He's in the bind. Yeah. Oh.
Starting point is 00:38:02 I should save him for the end, though. God damn. This is some. tricky shit. This is some tricky shit. Did I ever take a right fielder? I mean, you took a... You have Ronald Acuna.
Starting point is 00:38:19 You have Ronnie and Trowl. So I need a left fielder? Like I think if you wanted a draft right field, I think he could slide around. I have my left fielder locked up. He'll be my last pick of the draft. So I need a shortstop of first baseman. So if I'm getting him, that goes on the young side. young side, old side.
Starting point is 00:38:40 So I should try to look for older first baseman, but these don't really exist. But they, I'll take Yulea Uliu. It's my first baseman. Okay, I like that pick. 37. 37 years old. A best historical player with bases loaded. Sharp better.
Starting point is 00:39:05 Yeah, best bases loaded hitter ever. Over 50 played appearances. Best bases loaded hitter ever. My infield is fucking old. Old guy infield right now. Old infield. Okay. I got scared, Jim, because you were all around this.
Starting point is 00:39:26 And he's going to be my left fielder for now. If I have to pivot him to D.H, I can, but he still plays an all right left field. I'm taking Dr. Smooth, Michael Brantley, age 34, and still one of the best hitter. in the league. Now, D.H, it has to be someone that DHS is. At least regular. You can't take a guy who's just like a- You're not just dropping a guy who hasn't.
Starting point is 00:39:49 Yeah. I'm fine with doing that. I mean, Brantley gets some D.H run. I know. I'm not objecting to that. I'm just objecting. You can't be like. It can't be like we did in the international
Starting point is 00:39:58 where we had, like you ended up with Bogart's at D. Yeah. I'm fine with that. When you do like the D.H tab sort, it has to be got it comes up in there. Okay. Okay. Brandly probably does. Brandly does, so I've got a flex option for left field and D.H.
Starting point is 00:40:12 I'll put him at my left. He's 34. Penciling him into left field for now? Yes. And we'll see if I've got a shake and bake. So I currently have three young guys and four old guys. Okay. Okay, that's interesting. I thought I was getting nervous about the old guys for some reason.
Starting point is 00:40:33 Let me see. Age check aisle, aisle three, L.O.L. I'm just messing with you guys Um Oh I'm putting myself in quite the bind here You know what Let's let's check a goddamn box I need a catcher
Starting point is 00:40:54 I'm obviously eyeing old men catcher There's a good one right there for you I believe in that If you're going where I think you're going I don't Let me double check a couple ages Ooh this is interesting So one two three four So this is going to be my last old man
Starting point is 00:41:08 So this is someone over 30 I thought I had to go older than this. I don't. I'm going to go Salvador Perez. It's 31. It's my last old guy anyways. So when I took El Tuvei as my 31-year-old second baseman, and then I saw Salvi at 31,
Starting point is 00:41:28 and I couldn't have him at catch anymore. That's when I was like, I wish I would have really debated that more. Might have still come to the same conclusion. I might have still come to the same conclusion, but I probably could have picked up. Frazier at second. He's only 29. And then Salvia catchers.
Starting point is 00:41:44 But I'm not upset, but I wish I would have seen that. I have a catcher that works for you. I'm curious if you end up at where I'm thinking for you. Oh. To the what? Yeah, you guys are both out at catcher. Jake, are you done? Yes.
Starting point is 00:42:00 I believe so, right? Yeah. Okay. So I took Salve and Brantley. Yes. Done with this round. Yes. Draft.
Starting point is 00:42:07 Oh. So once I make, this is the only pick that is, No, none of my picks are snakeable. So I'm going to get the next three guys that I have. So that doesn't really matter the order I do them in. Huge. Only if I do shortstop now, because then you won't. No, it doesn't matter.
Starting point is 00:42:26 Nothing matters. I'm going to get the last three guys. I'm going to go, the ass man. Okay. Yep. I needed an old man. Classic. So I'm going, you know what, though?
Starting point is 00:42:37 Oh. To the what? He's thinking. Arms crossed for those listening only. I'm going to do this pick because I'm interested to see your reaction to it because you guys might veto it. Juan Soto, left field. That's who I thought you were going for.
Starting point is 00:42:53 That's legal. Why would we veto it? He hasn't played left field this year. Oh, really? They moved him to right field this year, but he's played a lot. It works. Your outfield can play the outfield. Okay.
Starting point is 00:43:05 Well, then. It's not like he's never played left. field. I know, but I was being cautious. We wanted a team that can play their positions. So when you guys both took the 22-year-olds, I knew I was going to get one soda. That was my realization. I identified those three 22-year-olds.
Starting point is 00:43:22 Yes, there was three 22-year-olds. So, yeah, that was the only, like, realization I had when I was prepping. I was like, oh, it's really only three. BPD, you're up? Well, I will be taking a guy. who is 36 years old. He is a pitcher, and his name is Max Scherzer. Okay.
Starting point is 00:43:52 I was wondering if someone would go Old Man Scherz. That gives you, it's a play. It's a play. He's good. He's still good. I think he just went on the IEL, but I don't think it's like a major thing. No, they said he's going to make his next start. And him and Soto and Perez.
Starting point is 00:44:09 They all might be at the All-Star game this year. And this next pick. is brought to you by John Boy Media's All-Star Game event. That's right. John Boy Media is headed to Denver for the All-Star Week. How about that? We sure are. We got a jam-pack schedule full of content and events that we know.
Starting point is 00:44:26 You guys are going to love. I'll be there. Jake will be there. B.B.D. will be there. Trevor Plouffe will be there. Chris Rose. Peter Moyland. Kelsey Wingert, Joe's McFly, Ashland, and everyone else.
Starting point is 00:44:38 A lot of other people that are helping. We're going to be playing Blitzball against professional blitzballers. We got house competitions. We're going to be going to the home run derby, we hope, and we have a bunch of other content things we're doing. But the best part is that we are watching the All-Star game at Improper City, a bar in Denver. So if you are in the area and you want to watch the game with the crew,
Starting point is 00:45:01 head over to Improper City. And if you want to spend some time with us beforehand, a little meet-and-grate, some gifts, some prizes, play Blitzball against us in the alley, get two beers comped. We are having a little bit of a VIP hour and a half event before the game starts. It's $50. And it's only 50 available. And we've almost sold out on Patreon's got early access.
Starting point is 00:45:27 So if you're in the area, if you plan on going, go to, I think it's on Eventbrite. So John Boy Media, All Star Game Watch Party, event bright, go check it out. I think the link will be in the bio of this video. Nice. Yeah, so go check it out Come hang out with us It's going to be good time If you
Starting point is 00:45:44 If you don't get the VIP in time Still come because we'll just be chilling You might not get all of us But you'll say hi Yeah hopefully All right BBD You got two picks left Nice pick
Starting point is 00:45:55 It's the final two picks I was worried For a second about If I needed to find a guy No one can snake it So do we want to go in order Or do you just want to give your two picks Do you
Starting point is 00:46:07 You guys tell me Just go on order We'll play the game. All right. I'm going to pick to play left field for my team. A guy I really wouldn't have expected to be, to end up with. He's had some down years before, but this year he's been really good. He's 33 years old.
Starting point is 00:46:26 It's Justin Upton. 14 homers this year and 810 OPS. How old is he? 33. And you don't have a 33-year-old? I don't think so. I don't know how much cross-checking we've been doing. Wrong color.
Starting point is 00:46:40 I've been writing stuff down. I think I have 22, 30, 40, 28, 24, 24, 29, 34, 36. Gentlemen's rules. Yeah. Gentlemen's rules so far. John Boy, shortstopper, a catcher. Kind of gave away your catcher. Yeah, he's going to be an old man, which means I get a younger dude at short,
Starting point is 00:46:59 which means I'm going to go Trey Turner. Okay. How old's Trey Turner? Trey Turner is 28. So I have the turners on the left side of the infield. Huge. Ray and Justin. There's another shortstop out there,
Starting point is 00:47:19 but he's actually in the older demo. But I need the Yass man, a catcher, and he's old. There's a... I accidentally played this pretty well. I don't have 28 or 29-year-olds. So I need shortstop. and a DH. My shortstop, I'm going to take him.
Starting point is 00:47:42 He's been the best shortstop this year, Xander Bogarts. He is 28 years old. So I will take that. And I'm going to take another Riding Masher, and I'll put him at DH. He's an NL guy, but he's kind of a DH. Castellanos. He's 29 years old.
Starting point is 00:48:02 I wanted Castianos, but I already took a 29-year-old. It's a good final rounds there. Thank you. Which one's 28? Which one's 29? Bogartz is 20. 28, Castellanos is 29. Yasmane's my last pick, the Yasman.
Starting point is 00:48:23 And my last pick, second base, Jazz Chisholm, he's 23. Okay. I had Jazz. He's deep on the second base list of guys, but he's young. It's good. Yeah, he's young. He gets the age. And I picked him in the international draft we did because he's Bahamas.
Starting point is 00:48:42 And after we did that, I saw just how good a year he is having. I don't know about ranking among second baseman, but he's also fun. So I'm people. I like the pick. That's good. So if you're at home, make these three teams and run them in the simulator
Starting point is 00:49:00 162 times. BPD has Real Mudo catching. Jose O'Breou at first. Jazz Chisham at second. Fernando Tatis at short. It's a dynamic double play. Duo. Devers at third.
Starting point is 00:49:14 In the outfield, he's got, Justin Upton, Mookie Betts, and Aaron Judge with Cruz Deaching and Scherzer on the bump. I have Grandal catching, Yuleiguriel at first, Altuve at second, Trey Turner at short, Justin Turner at third, Juan Soto and left, trout in center, Acuna in right, Otani Deaching. That's a pretty heavy little foursome right there. and Garrett Cole on the bump. Jake's got Salvi behind the dish.
Starting point is 00:49:48 Vladdy at first. Ozzy at second. Bogart's is at short. Erinato's at third. Brantley in left. Buxton and center. Bellinger and right. And Castiano deaching with DeGrom on the bump.
Starting point is 00:50:05 Yeah. All the catchers over 30. All the pitchers over 30. All the center fielder's and right fielder's under 29. The shortstop's young too. They're young with the short stops. Brandon Crawford was an option for me
Starting point is 00:50:21 if I wanted to go young somewhere else than I needed to go old at shortstop. Crawford's 334. Having a hell of a year. Some top of their position that did not get chosen due to age. Will Smith, that catcher's a young catcher in a good year. Did Max Muncie get chosen at all? No, I thought about him a few times.
Starting point is 00:50:41 He was in the 30-year-old. So like for you is Cole. For me it was Aeronado. For BBD, it was Real Muno. Yeah, yeah. Yeah, it was tough because he's on top a lot of boards at 30. In my brain. Also, Simian and Moncie.
Starting point is 00:50:54 In my brain, they were both 31. That was like the first panic attack I had. Yeah. When I realized they weren't 30. So 30s went off the board. And then 31 took Rizzo off the board, Freeman off the board, a bunch of 31-year-olds.
Starting point is 00:51:12 And then let's see. Correa doesn't go at shortstop. He's 26. J-Ram, third base, 28. Joey Wendell's 31. Let's see. No, not much there. J.D. was 33 at DH.
Starting point is 00:51:31 Did you have a 33-year-old, Jake? I did not. I didn't have 33. I didn't have 26. So that's... Oh, but you were left with two young guys, so Cassianos was younger. Yeah. So that's where, I mean, the way we set this up when we were thinking about it, originally we didn't even have the five over, five under rule. But baseball spreads out pretty good.
Starting point is 00:51:52 Like, you know, Jim, you didn't end up with, what, 24, 25? Yeah, without that rule, it would have been really easy. Yeah. But no, I like where we landed. These are interesting squads. So we'll tweet it out. Yeah. Let people decide.
Starting point is 00:52:10 I like my team. My outfield's fun. Yeah, you went heavy outfield, which was nice. Old Infield, young fun outfield. Yeah. I got speed, man. I got Turner, Soto, Coonia. Sure.
Starting point is 00:52:25 Buckston and Albi say what up to your speed? I mean, not a big deal. Who's your team captain again? Otani. Nice. I like that. It's a classic lead-by-example situation. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:52:41 How about you? Salvy and DeGrom, our co-captains, actually. DeGrom doesn't talk. That's why Salvi's and our co-captains. We have a lead by example and we have a talking captain. Okay. And BVD, your team is captainless, you said? Yeah, that's exactly what I said.
Starting point is 00:52:59 Okay. I betam. Pagan old dudes. You want me to, yeah. Jose Abrae who feels like my guy as the captain. He's guiding that young infield group. Real mood, I was leading by example, having a good time. And Josh and Mookie are
Starting point is 00:53:14 They're not a problem Best thing I did here was my prep board Yeah, I'd love to look at how you prep I had every position Top 10 by war Age OPS And then I just Chalked them out red once they got
Starting point is 00:53:29 Taken Yeah I wish I prepped differently than I did Because I basically just wrote down guys That are weird ages I just had the tabs that looks like that Tab guy Saved some time
Starting point is 00:53:43 No, well, this saved time during the draft, but took more time beforehand. Because I could just slide. 26 or Control Find, 29, need a 29-year-old. Sure. On the same page. It's happy with myself over that. Good. There you go.
Starting point is 00:53:58 That's the draft. We'll tweet it out. You guys chose who wins. We're ending the show because the AC's been off and it's getting really hot in here. So there you go. Love you. See you Friday. Go with Trevor Poulouse.
Starting point is 00:54:13 A happy belated birthday. Yes. He hates Bladed Perfect. Yeah. So do it. Jake's out.
