Hello and welcome to Talking Baseball.
It is the midweek episode, and we're here to check in to see how teams are doing
compared to how Vegas said they should be doing.

My name is Jimmy.
Sitting next to me is Jake in California.
We got Trevor Plooping behind the dish producers.

This episode was almost a monthly staple last year,
and it's the first time we're doing it this year.
I'm excited because it helps us just check in with who's over-delivering and under-delivering,
according to what Vegas and ourselves thought they would be doing.
It's the over-under-check-in.
Trev, are you worded, excited?
What are your emotions going in?
into this look around the league.
So I did a little gander at our over-under sheet from the beginning of the year.
I did not look at the sheet that we have now in front of us,
which has like the predictions and like what people need to go to fulfill the over-unders.
So I'm kind of in the dark as to how we've done.
I think last year, if I'm not mistaken, I think Jake took the title.
Is that right?
I think I had it throughout the year
and then like last month of the season
I shot the bed I'm pretty sure

did I know that and just tee it up maybe
but listen
wow we um we
this isn't blind I guess it is blind we do research
we do the TPPs so a lot of the stuff that we predict
I think it's it's more informed than other stuff you're going to see
and hopefully this shows that I'm not sure if it does
but I like to think that.

I'm excited to get in here.
We learn things along the way.
I know there's some fun stuff for the teams with the hot starts
that are going to be like, hey, like you already,
you didn't win the war, but you kind of did.
like if you just keep your skis going down the mountain
like you're on track for a really good year
and it might be funny to see teams
that maybe we've been overreacting or underreacting to
that may be right on pace of what we expected.
So excited to go in there and excited to see, you know,
I kind of mentioned this last episode
we just hit the point where like I think the train's out of the station.
The season started.
you're in, you're out, you had a bad start, you had a good start.
Two, three teams, four teams are about to flip the script.
There's about to be a couple teams that turn it on or find it.
Or opposite end of the spectrum, you have a bad injury, you have a bad month,
something happens.
You know, the baseball season is a roller coaster.
We're six weeks in.
Someone's about to have an awful six weeks.
Someone's about to have an incredible six weeks.
I don't know who it is, but I'm going to be.
excited to find out. Jim?
I'm excited too. I really wanted to see the teams that are, have an easy shot at this point.
Obviously, it's early and there's a ton of baseball left, but I'll just, I'll just tee it up for you right away.
What if I told you, Trevor Plouffe, that the Jake's Diamondbacks, Jake's snakes, could go,
could win at a 397 clip the rest of the season,
go 50 and 76, and hit the over.
That's a bad rest of the way.
And they would hit the over.
And we all agreed on the under.
They win 50 more games out of their next 126 games,
and the over's hit.
I saw Toro Lavello today on MLB Network,
and he was talking about pitching,
how excited he was about it before the year.
I think that's something we missed, I guess, on them.
Brent Strom effect.
But that's a good one to start out with.
We didn't give Jake Snakes a lot of credit,
but they came out hot.
They're not even the most,
whatever you would say,
least amount of wins needed for the over on the list.
Baltimore Orioles, we all agreed the under.
62 and a half, we said, under, under,
they've been pesky.
Jake's been telling you.
No, he has not.
49 wins, and they hit the over out of their next 126 games.
Jim, by the way, and I don't know if you're, if you are feeling this or not feeling this,
the Orioles are actually right on path.
They were, the over under was 62 and a half.
Right now they're projected for 63 wins.
Yeah.
So, I mean, you say that, but the Orioles are right where Vegas thought they'd be.
It's true.
But it's still, I don't know, it's likely.
I thought it was a lock.
We all agreed.
I think if they lose tonight, they're projected for the under.
And with these teams that we,
Vegas projected for the very low win totals.
You know, they've, you talked about, you know,
a decently hot start for these guys,
has them on track to go over.
But remember, with a decently hot start,
that means there's probably a month here.
It's going to be pretty bad last year.
You want to hear the Orioles worst month?
Let's hear it.
How many wins do?
Four and 24.
That's a bad month.
That's a bad month to baseball.
So there are months like this that can still happen on either side.
I guess that's what we're kind of highlighting a little bit today.
But four and 24 last year, that's a 143 winning percentage.
It was in August in case you were wondering.
And guess what?
They bested it by one win, May.
They went five and 23.
So they had two really tough months last year.
Wouldn't surprise me if we maybe saw some of the same.
Not rooting for that.
Yankees on pace for 120 wins.
That's interesting.
Probably feels low.
I lock that up.
Feels low.
Hey, I think we're doing pretty well as a unit.
When I started counting, I think there's actually we had a lot of games.
A lot of teams we all agree with one, two, three, four, five, six, six,
7, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12, 13, 14, 15, 16 teams that we, the three of us all agreed on the outcome.
I'm marking them whether if we are right or wrong.
And on near the top here.

I'd like a better percentage out of us.

Well, the good news is the Orioles are there as wrongs.
We all agreed they would take the under,
the Orioles and the DeBacks.
They are on pace for the over,
but it's very, very close on the Orioles.
And DeBacks,
they're kind of on pace for the over.
But Jake, you think the Orioles will taper off
and hit the under still?
I guess that's kind of one of the eye-opening things.
You know, I've had a really weird relationship with the birds this year.
It goes back to my college days.
My roommate, Nick, our buddy, the mailman, he put a bird feeder outside our college dorm room window.
It sucked.
The birds showed up every morning, and they were loud as shit.
It was a nightmare.
The Orioles this season, kind of the same thing.
I was being mean to them.
I was like, you guys are a joke of a franchise.
I hate what you did to left field.
Why aren't you more competitive?
Where's Adley?
Where's Grayson?
Adly was her.
I know.
Then I watched the Orioles product this year, and it was kind of fun.
They were pesky.
And I guess seeing this now, that they were pesky and feeling better,
but they're still on track for where they were.
And then when Trev drops a stat, like they are a team that went four,
four for 21 last year or whatever it was,
I'm worried about my O's.
I'm still, if I had to, like, if you gave me the option to change,
I'd still keep the under there.
Okay.
What about your debacks?
The D-backs, Jim, sometimes you need to fade the fade.
Okay.
And they're my favorite team in the National League West right now.
Yep.
And they brought him Brent Strom.
Favorite team.

Let's think about this.
I actually just posted a picture that proves I've been a D-Backs fan for life.
You'd like it.
No, the D-Backs, and I think this is one of the fun conversation.
So they're off to a 500 start.
Now, we do have to be nervous, right?
Like, we've seen a lot of teams.
The Mariners always jump out before this Mariners'
like actual good run.
They had that Encanaccioan team that got hot,
and then the wheels just fell off.
It doesn't feel like that with the snakes.
You're still scared of the NL West.
Like, let's be honest.
If they run into some Dodgers Padre series,
they could be having a tough time.
They are getting incredible pitching performances
that if their pitching stands anywhere in this realm,
they're going to be like a 70 win ball club and good for my snakes with their over under coming into the season with 66 and a half.
And we all sit under.
I mean, I don't know what you guys were.
James, you and I were nice enough to say, well, we hope they don't lose 100 games, though.
Yeah.
Jake wanted them dead.
No, no, no.
It was the fading the fate.
It's like if I win the bet, then I win money.
But if they go over the bet, that means my snakes had an incredible season.
and that's what they're on track.
We'll move up the list here a little.
The Colorado Rocky, 68 and a half was there over under.
We all agreed over.
We thought they had some fighting them.
They are 17 and 18 right now,
but that has them on pace for the over by 10 games.
Decent.
They would need to go 52 and 75 the rest of the way to hit the over.
I think that's doable.
What do you guys think?
I'm happy with us there.
I think they got some fight.
Just needed some more home games.
I'm trying to remember why we thought that they would make it happen.
I know they signed Chris Bryant in the off season.
And were we just saying like they're going to,
this is a team that's going to,
a lot of shit was talked about their front office.
And somehow they're going to win enough games
where it makes like what they're doing like palatable.
Is that why we did that?
Because I'm curious.
It was because in 2020.
the Colorado Rockies,
Colorado Rockies,
they had a 74-win team.
Like, they
finished a couple games back of the New York Mets last year.
Yeah.
And I mean, they didn't, you know,
they were 48 and 33 at home.
So, yeah, I think it was just kind of like a 74-win team.
And remember, we looked at their roster
and were like, oh, like Gritchick's there.
Jose Iglesias.
All right.
Like, you know, they did story out, Brian in,
and you were like, I wonder where that ends up.
Their rotation isn't ugly.
Like, if they didn't pitch in Corse Field,
like the Colorado Rockies rotation of Marquez, Freeland,
Senzatella, Gomber.
Like, those guys give you an effort.
Sorry, I left you out, Chad Kool,
who's having the best season of all of them.
But, yeah, I mean, the Rockies were positioned,
and they added Kelsey Winger.
like they were going over.
Maybe that was it right there.
We didn't even know about Connor Joe back in the day.

But that's my favorite guy.

Every team that was projected to win less than 70 games,
Trevi of your hand up.
I don't think we can say for 100% certainty that the dad was Roman ready because I believe there are times that can you make a baby not fully ready?

The Pirates, the Rockies, the debacks, and the Orioles.
Yeah.
They're on pace for the over.
But there was a team projected for 70 and a half wins
and they're on pace for the under.
And I'm a little surprised.
I didn't realize things were going this poorly.
Must be the last couple games.
I know they just lost a three games set.
The Oakland Athletics, they are on pace
for the under right now.
They've won 15 games.
They've lost 23.
Yeah, I guess I think the last couple
series really twisted that.
They just lost three in a row.
That probably hurts them in this tight percentage game.
In this tight percentage game, yeah.
And yeah, they had a little funk there.
One, two, three, four, five, six.
They had a sneaky nine-game loser
in the middle of their season.
Damn.
But yeah, outside of that,
They've been an okay product.
But yeah, you know, I took the over on them just to kind of buck you guys
because I was like, I don't know, Oakland, they put out a decent product sometimes.
It really hasn't been there.
Their offense is last in the league and a lot of things.
They're triple slashing last in the AL, which is bad.
And I guess why I kind of got excited is they're pitching.
Their pitching's always kind of played.
They're six in the AAL.
they're just getting nothing, nothing offensively right now.
And, you know, tick, tick, tick, tick.
When does Frankie Montas watch start, you know?
It's already started.
Here's an interesting stat for them.
A couple different ones.
At home, we know what's going on with the lack of attendance there.
A lot of people are saying it's an FU to the ownership.
They're five and 13 at home.
That's not what you want.
want to be at home. You know, you usually want to feel good there. Five and 13, not it.
And another fun stat, they're not good in one run games or blowouts, three and seven and one
run games and two and five in blowouts, a blowout, meaning five plus run separating. So they just
win regular old games and mostly on the road. So if you're looking to bet, that's your avenue
right there. Regular games on the road. Okay, that's a great betting advice.
The Rangers, they are also, they were a pretty low projection from Vegas,
and they're on pace for the under, also of only one 15 games.
We all agreed it was the under.
It was set at 74 and a half.
We didn't think it was this year for them yet.
They would need to win 60 more games and with the Angels playing good ball.
And I think the Mariners being ahead of them, as well as the Astros being the Astros.
I just think that is going to fall.
short. Shari, Texas Rangers.
They've been okay in May, 8 and 5 in May.
Not good in one-run games, which kind of makes sense.
We knew that the pitching wasn't exactly there this year.
And Simeon, Marcus, you're a stud.
I need you to remember that.
Go do your thing, player.
Yeah, I guess Oakland and Texas is a little surprising both ways.
I'm surprised Texas is as close to their overrunner as they are,
and I'm surprised Oakland is as far from where they are.
As the season's gone, Texas has gotten better, Oakland's gotten worse.

Can I switch gears instead of just going up the chart here to a team that has locked?
They're locked, like we're saying, a lot can happen here,
and there's one team that is just fully locked.
There's no way.
Oh, I know what you're going to say.

There's just, I will, you know, sever a limb.
The Cincinnati Reds.
have not won a 10th game yet.
They are 9 and 26.
They had their over under at 74.5.
We all agreed no way.
That's the under.
We're the smartest guys in the room.
They're on pace for 41 wins.
They would need to go 66 and 61 the rest of the way.
So they lose.
Yeah, it's the under.
That's locked.
And we're all smart.
The first lock of the year we get it right.
Go us.
Yeah, I mean, I'm pretty happy with that.
I'm glad we did the turkey math on that to all land on the under.

I mean, if you had to pick two teams that are locked,
I mean, the Cincinnati Reds are one.
And then it's kind of the New York Yankees.
But I would, you can't, but that's tough.
make you losses are hard you can't make up losses like they have lost 26 games yeah in such a
short window so yeah they went they went one in 21 recently in a 22 game stretch um that was you know
middle of april beginning of may one in 21 yeah the next closest for me would be the the tigers
who they would really really need to turn it on they had them at 77 and a half
wins.
I took the over.
I thought Hinch and Baez and some of,
I don't know if we did it before after the Meadows trade.
I just thought they'd have some spunk and spark.

You're looking good there.
They're on pace for 58 wins.
I mean,
they're not locked,

but I put a fingernail on the line.

I thought there was going to be a weak ale central.
I thought some of the young guys,
guys, the starting pitching might take a step forward.

But yeah, it hasn't happened offensively.
Spencer Torkelson hasn't done it.
Really nothing's gone right for them.
I could see them going on a little run, you know, throughout the season.
But to get to that, the over is going to be pretty tough.
Need a good month to make it tight.
They kind of did the same path last year with the bad start and bounce back.
we'll see if they've got a little bit of that formula.
There's another team that has that formula that's hoping for that.
And that's the Atlanta Braves.
Yeah.
The Atlanta Braves to hit the over need to go 75 and 51 the rest of the way.
That's a winning, it's a 595% winning percentage.
595.
That is the most out of any team, barely, just above the Dodgers, but needed to hit the over.
And I don't think that's impossible for the Braves.
We saw the Cardinals go on a crazy stretch last year.

but almost a 600 winning percentage for the last,
you know, what, four and a half months of the season?
It's a lot.
It's a lot.
Sometimes I think maybe it's good that the Mets got off to this big start in front of them
because now they know they got to play catch up
and they got to go go do some things.
So maybe forces the hand.
Not that Anthopolis needs anybody to force his hand.
We know that he's willing to just make a new outfield at a whammy did that last year.
I think the Braves are a good bet.
Maybe not to a 600 of the rest of the way,
but they're a really good bet to fire off like the last three, four good months here.
You know, they've just kind of been middling around,
like offense has been about league average.
pitching's about league average.
They just need to get everyone kind of on the same page, feeling healthy.
I think Rosario, I know that he only came in at the end of last year,
but I think, like, you know, having him around is good for your team.
Acuna back kind of, like, battling and groin issue, like, put him on the aisle, get him healthy.
Like, I wouldn't worry about the May if I'm the Atlanta Braves, you know,
knowing what we knew what they did last year, like, let's go get everyone healthy
and then get everyone ready for the stretch run.
I think there's a good run of baseball on this team for sure.
It's one you look at on this list, and you're like, it's tough.
But you also know if they can crank out a 15 and 5 or like a 20 and 7 month,
which this team is fully capable of, this team, this roster is still stacked.
They just haven't shown any signs of it yet.
So you just, I don't know.
I mean, they pushed it almost as far as they could go last year.
You know, they hit the trade deadline.
They're right around 500.
I mean, Peter Moyland, who covers the Brave, said, you know, they had two series there,
where if they won them, they'd be buyers.
If they lost them, they'd be sellers.
They won them.
They were buyers, and the rest is history.
So, yeah, I mean, they're playing with fire a little bit, but also they,
Trev, they've still got the horses in the back that it feels like it's going to happen at some point this year.
I think it's just going to be a question.
Is it June?
is it August? Is it September? September.
Oh, yeah. I mean, this team is still stacked.
It took until August last year to get going.
12 and 14 in April, 13 and 12 in May, 13 and 15 in June, 14 and 13 in July.
So really, there's the middling club. August comes around 18 and 8.
That was their big month.
They went 16 and 10 in September.
Another nice month there.
So, yeah, I mean, I, I,
Twitter and the Braves.
Like I'm, you know, I follow a few people there, Braves Twitter.
They're not happy right now.
And I get it, but I think that they should, you know, learn from the past a little bit,
a little bit of patience with this team.
I think it's kind of expected, man.
You win the World Series.
We were hoping they, you know, weren't going to be hung over from it.
But if you saw the parade at all, you knew they're probably going to be hung over.

and then it's just I changed it at the last minute.
