Hello and welcome to Talking Baseball. Homa, Homa, it's time. The annual Homer draft, we get a team. So do you the people. That's how we're different. Let's yuck ball. Read Depmerch. Harmon Killebrew.

Get it out of the lake. Hello and welcome to Talking Baseball. Best baseball show in the world. I'm Jake Story Ellie. That is Trevor Plouffe. Rob Chiracroko is producing his butt off. Dalton Feeley got us all the stats and information for everything you could want, home run-wise, as we do the Homer draft today, building out a lineup.

Each player we pick a team gets eliminated. So watch me and Trev stumble over that a couple times. And that will leave an all-fan team at the end that we put together for the people. We have last year's results. and a fun way to kind of look into what's coming up for this season, Trev, and to look back and be like, oh, yeah, Cal Raleigh did do that last year. He went off last year. He was on my team.

Yeah. I had two big boys on my team. You somehow still got me by nine homers last year. I know that's why you were setting me up for that pop. I'm okay. We'll give you your flowers. You did a great job. I had Cal and Shoah.

The rest of my team didn't really put on for me last year. year. Yeah, it's, well, I guess we'll get right into it. As Trev mentioned, yeah, I guess Lil Poppy took it home. I mean, just strategy, ability. I landed with 254 home runs, Judge Early, a good pick for me. Shea Langaleers, you know, pulled his weight from the catcher spot to not get destroyed by your Cal Rale.

And then, yeah, you had Shohei. I had Yordaun, so I lost 49 homers from the D.H. spot from you. And then, yeah, I just kind of chipped away. Pete, Catelle-Marte, Jose Ramirez, Bobby Witt, James Wood, Luis Robert, Judge and Yordawn. You were Cal Vladdy, who Vladdy's always, the offensive profile is there, but 23 home runs. It's be interesting to see if he, we always do this debate.

Like, is Vladdy ever going to try to try to, change his swing a little and then we're like no yeah why would no because it works really good what's his what's his career high no what hurt you coach trev Matt mclane and royce rois lewis you played the royce lewis card um elliot romano again i might again jake yeah i know you might and that's and that's the concern uh the fan team so a we're fools uh nobody took anyone from the Phillies. So they got Bryce Harper at first, William Contreras behind the dish, Nolan Gorman at second. Caminero gave the fans a 45 burger. Seeger with 21. Riley Green with 36 was a great pick from them. Michael Harris, two at 20, Kyle Tucker, 22, and then Jorge

Saler kind of tanked their team. So what's that? I knew Vlad had a big year. 48. I forgot about that. That was in 2021. That was the Dunedin Park. Not to Dunedin to Buffalo to Toronto. I think that was that year that there was some again, no allegations

of anything, but I think the ball was getting out of there a little better. It's one of the oldest ballparks. Oh no, Buffalo. One of the oldest ballparks in professional baseball. In Buffalo. Okay.

Okay. I know maybe we should have done this. Would it be, again, it's a lot of work on the fly for Dahl. I wonder if we should just do a fans. If instead of giving them a team, we just got their best possible. I think they'd beat us because, like, they would have got Schwerber. I don't know. We'll see if that happens on the back end.

Let's get into this year. Last year's gone, dude. It's over. How many of those homers roll over to this year, Treve? Zero. None. New season. Hunter Goodman?

Let's get into it. We're just going to go back and forth, side to side. We did decide. I think we've landed on a good thing to figure out who should get the first pick. And by the way, I don't think the first pick super matters. I think the first couple picks are kind of obvious. Well, let's see. I think Rob is going to pick a player for us,

and we're going to guess their career home runs. Well, here are the players. off of a baseball reference. Darren Oliver, you want to do. Darren Oliver. He might tell me butts. We got Larry Deerker. Do you guys have a preference or do you just want me to choose a random?

Maybe pick a position player. Pick a position player. Yeah, we're going to want a position player. I think your safest bet is Sedano there? Which Sedanio was that? That's Cesar. Yeah. Oh, baby.

Okay, we got, like that Cesar. Uh, Caesar Sedano, how many home runs does he have? Trev, would you like to go first? Can I get like the years played? He played for 17 years from 1970 to 1986. I'm, I'm going to write down, I'll type my answer into the computer so I could, you know, no funny business. I'm doing a little, I'm going to do a little math here. I'm going to go with, um, 50 career stolen bases.

That's a little telling for me. Caesar could run. Cesar could run. How many? 550. Oh, I thought you said 50. I was going to say that's crazy. 550. Okay, it means he played a lot. 17 years. I'm doing a little math. I'm going, I'm going to go seven a year, which would put me at 119. Okay. That's not. That's not.

That's an incredible math of it's right. But there's no way. Is it? Wow. I wrote on my computer 79. In my head, I've heard of Caesar Sedano. And I have him being all speed that I'm picturing old school slappy that I wrote down 79. Caesar Sedano has 199 home runs. What a baller. 200 homers? He had a few years, Jake.

You don't know Caesar Sedanio? 26, 25. 22. 26102? Oh, my goodness. 200 homers 550 steals from Caesar Sedanio. I'm glad we're paying some respect to a guy. How many gold gloves was that, Bob?

Was that four? Back in the day. We didn't look at defensive war. Five. Five. I'll pull some strings, get Caesar to Daniel on the hall of pretty good. Oh. Look at you.

using your powers for good. The internet do your thing. It's going to happen now. Well, coach, you have the first pick in the draft and I'll just do it quick again for the people. Building a lineup, so we've got to hit each position. And it's a team eliminator. So if Aaron Judge were to be selected,

that would rule out Austin Wells at the catching position. It's, you know, this is a two horse race right here for number one pick. It's between Shohei, who? has 153 homers over the last three years, 20203 to 2025, Aaron Judge 148. Sometimes I worry, like,

is show I ever going to feel fatigued? Right. Like, is he going to be tired? Some year he should be sleepy. Like, he should be tired. He does a lot.

But you know what? He loves more than anything, Jake? What's that? Sleep. This guy is like a sleep master. That's why he's never sleepy. Right.

I forgot about that whole thing. Yeah. He like travels with his own like mattress, like easy. Yeah. So a guy that takes care of his body like that, I'm going to be in LA. It makes sense. I'm going show Hey, Otani. That's my DH position. Dodgers and Shohei off the board. Number one pick. Wow. Greg. Solid pick. And I thought it was a three man race for that first pick. It could be. But, I mean, and not to get the draft off to maybe too speedy of a start, because I can't. If I pass on the big fella, there's just too much regret there. And I could give some, you know, catching stuff,

and we've never seen that before. But yeah, I don't know. I guess you're kind of right. It had to be Judge or Shohei. And you know what? I think for a second I was like, oh, great, here we are starting the Homer draft with Judge and Shoah. Good.

We should start off more show. with Judge and Shoah. We should do episodes on just them. That Aaron Judge will be my right fielder. And I'm pretty good with that. Only 53 last year. But pretty good year for Judgey. Can I read some stats of his actually really quick?

I want to ask you something before you do that because it's going to be a little segue into it. A lot of talk. I do a show of Dan Rourke, big Yankee fan, big Judge fan. A lot of talk about Judge being. possibly the best right-handed hitter ever. That's like going around. What say you on that?

I mean, man, I'm not like a baseball historian at that level yet. Like as I'm sneaking up on full midlife crisis, like I think one day I'm going to like Kirkajan, Busterolni, just lock the doors in a Vermont cabin and like do it. But as of now, as far as four-year run, go. 62 homers, 58 homers, 53 homers.

And I think the other part that's cool about it. And I don't know. Like, Judge won the batting title last year. That's what I'm saying. I think he's so well-rounded. Power, average, everything is there for you. He's in those three seasons

because he missed 50 or so games in 2023. But so in 2022, 22, 23, and 24, or excuse me, 22, 24, 25. So Cal Raleigh, who might be a upcoming pick in the draft, out homers him last year. But he led in Homer's two of those three seasons.

He led in walks all three. Like the batting averages, the last two years was 322, 331. So, yeah, I'd have to dive into the history books a little bit. And in my lifetime, like, I feel like we had these conversations with miggy cabs and pool holes at certain points. And off the top of my head, this current stretch that judges on, out does kind of their best,

their best stretches that, yeah, man, I know you opened the show with, did you drop a Harmon Killebrew at the top? I did. Like, you know, I'd have to go really dig into some of those dudes. But I'll tell you what, it's not like it's just us or Dan Rourke throwing those words around. Like, you know, you'll see passers.

articles or you see but so the fact that if it wasn't a conversation that's when the old heads come in and they would shoot it down and they'd be like why don't we put why don't we put some name on skinny lucorelli's name um but they're not doing that because judge is that guy obviously it's it's a conversation always you know it's ongoing judges in the prime of his career how old is judge right now. 31? Judges going to be 34 in April.

Wow. Right? It looks great, by the way. Looks great. Looks great. Not slowing down. Knock on fucking wood.

Okay. Well, that was our judge talk. I have some interesting kind of game planning here for you because great. The next,

you could wait on Kyle Schwerber if you wanted to do. Only caveat to that is I could just pick a Philly. You could take Harper? Yeah. I could take a, I could take a Philly.

Brandon Marsh breakout. I don't know. Yeah, I'll, I'll, will some things going on there. It doesn't matter what I do, Jake. So there is that gamesmanship, but I'm just going for me. I'm not even thinking about you right now, Jake. Love you so much. I like that.

I'm not thinking about you. I'm doing my thing. It's me time. And the catcher position, there's such, there's a massive drop up. I love Hunter Goodman. Yeah. I want everyone to know that. my guy this year. But there's, there's the big bad man. They just won the Super Bowl. He was there in

Seattle. Cal Freak and Raleigh over the last three years, 124 hit 60 last year. The lineup around him keeps getting better. Brendan Donovan, by the way, in a Mariners uni, looks phenomenal. Oh, wow. I haven't seen this yet, but you should have seen how quickly Bob just went to the keyboard. We'll get it in a second. He had the teals on. what do they call that marine green whatever it is i don't know gorgeous he looked great there he is oh wow doesn't he look good that's a nice tone because red is harsh dude red is harsh like it's you got to be the right kind of like player for red i don't know man i didn't fully realize that i went my high school uh was red and a i mean you're dealing with some high school acne in a couple

photos that that's just, I mean, just accentuating it. Yeah. And then you know, you've seen, you know, the brilliance of Jimmy's brain that, you know, Jimmy'll say, oh, I don't wear red. Like, that doesn't work for me. Blue, gray, white,

make those eyes pop, big daddy. Cow's the pick because of the 60 homers last year that no catcher has ever done before. It, um, I don't know, Mariners fans don't care,

but it's going to be an interesting thing to watch this year. Like if Cal gets off to a hot start, I mean, everyone's going to be losing their mind again and good because we've never, we're talking about we've never seen it from Judge. We've never seen it from a catcher. If he gets off to a slower start, I wonder the noise in Seattle. People just care if they're winning. That's kind of what it comes down to.

Seattle, they're on a high right now. Baseball team good. Football team. Unbelievable. Brendan Donovan, Cal Raleigh, they go, they'll go in the woods and shoot an animal, right? Is Cal like that? He's such a nice guy, man. Nice guy. Can't believe how nice he is. Florida State.

Really? Charlie Woods. I always have Florida State as this, like, party school, which I think it is, but it's also like a good school. Yeah, it's a nice, it's a really nice Florida mix. What does that happen? Even like Florida people talk smack on Florida State. Talonasty. Never went to college.

Never went to college. Central Connecticut State. So I'm going Cal Raleigh. I had him, Shohei and Cal on my team last year. They carried me. So I'm back, coach. Great picks. And if we're being honest, the draft begins.

And like you said, it's this weird thing. Mentally, we want to play defense, but it really doesn't matter. It's just kind of like. No, it matters. I have my next ticket. Yeah, I'm ready. I'm ready for this draft this year. I think I might surprise you.

Well, I think we're thinking to the same guy. That's the problem. Really? Yeah. But if you do that, then I have a counter. Do you want to give me, my pick is locked. Do you want to give me the last letter of their last name if we're thinking of the same guy? Last letter to the alphabet, baby.

Yes, we are. Ooh, this is fun, coach. Well, Schwerver is not on your team then. Oh, shoot. Should I take Schwartz? You know what, Trev? I think this is the beauty of it, and this is where the conversation really begins.

We are thinking of the same guy. It's not Eugenio Suarez, by the way. No. Who also hit 50 last year? Maybe it should be. And this is really dumb. I don't know. I guess this kind of reveals the cards,

and maybe this is a sneaky storyline of the season. Some dudes are different, man, and I know the baby face. It might be deceiving. If this guy did it on your team, you would be screaming from the rafters. I'm going with Nick Kurtz. Let's go. Big Amish in 117 games last year hit 36. He got off to a slow start, which if you start butternifing the stats, things get even crazier.

And Trev, I think. the secret option that was probably in the back of your head is the fact that they're playing another season like we already referenced Vladys 2021 they're playing in a little bit of a cheat code ballpark um that i will take kurt's comma nick to be my first baseman i love it i mean i thought that was going to be my sneaky pick until i realized that you know ball just like i know ball and i knew that was coming he's we talked about it there's guys The only thing you could say is, look, is the league going to figure him out? Sophomore season?

I've said on this show, he doesn't seem like that type of hitter. There is swing and miss in the game, but I mean, you get that when you have the power that he has. He also takes good hacks. Swing decisions are good. So, like, I think he's going to be fun. He looks the part of a guy that's going to be around for a long time mashing the baseball. So, yes, the park helps. but I also think he, I don't think it matters where that guy plays.

He's a dude. Yeah. And again, I just, I've told the people on here before, but I remember all the prospect people, when they start talking with a certain level of confidence, because you can't do that with prospects. They were like, no, this guy, he's going to be on the team very soon. And I think he's, I think if he wasn't an athletic,

he might have already been up. And yeah, the butter knife. which I don't, it doesn't make the numbers that more, much more impressive. He started off slow, his first 23 games at the big league level, 208, 259, a 558 OPS. So, you know, first three weeks of games got out of the gate slow. In 94 games, 35 home runs, 309 batting average, 409 OBP, a 1.1 OPS for his final 94 games.

So I'll take a chance on it. I think he might just, there's a chance he joins the ranks. There's a chance he doesn't, but I'll go down swinging with him. The opposite field power, Trev. He one dotted it, man, last year. That's silly. It's just silly. 420 at bats.

Shout out. Oh. Good pick. Now, it puts me in a bind here a little bit because do I play defense already with my third overall pick? I'm in your head like that. That's fine. No, no, no, no. Because Schwabers still available to you.

I could block you by taking Bryce Harper right now. Take Royce Lewis. You would counter that by taking Pete Alonzo with your first base. So I could either take Pete from you or Kyle from you. And I'm deciding right now which one to do. Because Kyle Swarber obviously is, he's a banger. He's a threat to hit 50 homers. That's correct.

I don't know if Pete has that in the bag. I think I should block him. And if I go Harper, if I go Harper, was there a second baseman I can take or like an infielder? I don't think so. If I go Harper, he's got the Dave Dombrowski chip on his shoulder, man. The naughty leaf in the batting cage. Wow. You love GM quotes.

You love GM quotes. I, first of all, stroke of genius by. Dave Dombrowski for figuring out how to motivate Bryce Harper. Basically, you just shit talk them in the media. And Bryce is like,

what? There's a chance Bryce hits 50 this year. He's pissed. Not happy. I'm playing. It's a little defense. It's a little. I think Bryce is going to go off here.

I'm taking Bryce Harper for my first base slot. Look at you and me. We're living up to our old man or young man reputation. Do I have all old? No, I'm just saying Kurtz and Harper back to back with kind of like, what could Nick Kurtz be? And both of us also just being like, I don't know.

Bryce Harper's younger than Judge, right? We've just seen Bryce Harper for an extra decade. I'm big on like the Bryce Harper massive 2020. six train. I'm driving it. Do you drive a train like that? I don't think so. Ooh. How do you drive? I think you're like this. You normally see them.

I think speed is the biggest factor. Yeah, but I mean, don't you just go like this once? And they're like, all right. I have no clue. What is a train conductor? I have no clue. Is it rigid? Does he push the door open button? Is it a rigid process to become a train conductor?

You'd like to think so? Ain't no way, go. It can't be easy. Harper is 33. He turns 34 in October next year. He's younger than Judge. We've just seen him as a 16-year-old on Sports Illustrated. Yeah, man, I never bet against talent.

He hasn't had, I guess he had 30 in 20, 24, 35 and 21. And yeah, I'm ready. Like, when's the Dumbrowski-Harper picture from spring training going to drop? I want Bryce to not even. even look at him. Dude, I want him to, like,

hold the grudge. No, I've got... He doesn't really mean it. I've got Bryce wearing a massive, not elite shirt and like shaking his hand. I'm like, Hey, Dave Dombrowski is smart.

He'll, he'll double down. In spring frame, no way. Bryce came in. That's a mutiny. I thought he, you know,

would look. You know, it maybe needs to focus on his off season weight training program a little little more. Just give it. He just keeps going. Yeah, Harper looks a little bit sheep. What was the, uh, during the CBA times, didn't it?

Bryce went out. He told Manfred, get the F out of our clubhouse. Yo. Old man Bryce is going to be fun, dude. Ooh, interesting. That might be a, that might be a keep him off at Twitter. Um, okay, Trev. You better take Vinny over Pete because they move.

the fences in it, Kaufman. So something you kind of missed is Nick Kurtz is a first baseman. So my first base position is locked. I mean, you're right about that. It did kind of miss that. But the main thing was to block you from Schorber. I like it. And maybe defense

wins. Okay. And a quick update. So an instant veto. We had Dalton put together the best fan best possible team from last year. And they would have dusted us. So we're not doing that. They have the advantage of hindsight.

Just picking, like, okay, Joe Adele gets on there with his 37. But no, sorry, fan team. You're going to be locked in just like us. Ooh, Coach Trev. So I need everything. The Kurtz picks. I don't want to say I regret it because I live without regrets. Man, Camerero's an interesting one.

Because they're leaving. They're going back to the drop. They're going back to the drop. Like how much do I think a baseball stadium really affects home runs? Kind of a loaded question, right? Ask Willie Adamas that. Dude, Willie. Couldn't see, coach.

That was crazy. You know what? I know what I'm doing. Because I think there's a position that's sneaky, a little tricky to find the homer ball. Let me just make sure I've got my positions right. No, there's a couple guys over there. But I think I still want this guy,

because I think Speed was the name of the game last year. I think Soto's going to have his crazy Homer year. Give me left fielder. Juan Soto, which allows me to put him in the corners with Judge. Remember? I do. They were a pretty nice tandem. Give me Soto the left fielder.

I think he got his speed fix-in for one year to be a trivia question. His career high in Homer-Homers was with, was it with the Yankees or did he clear it last year? He did. So his past two years, Soto went 41 homers, 43 homers. Those are his two career highs. Just a reminder, we just played the age game with Harper and Judge.

So, it was 27. Dude, it's insane how young. He does not look 27. No offense. None taken. No, you're right. It feels like Juan Soto should be 30. He's not.

That he's boosted his career home runs the past two seasons. He led the National League and Steele somehow last year. Don't know what to do with that. If he starts locking in 40 a year, when you start thinking about where his career numbers could potentially start going, Soto and Judge, I've seen it work. Yeah. I have an interesting draft strategy.

I'm trying to go, like, where the discrepancies are. Like, is there a player at this position that is, like, so far ahead and above everybody else? And I thought, like, this would kind of be another one of those positions. I'm looking at the shortstop position. Last year, I had Gunner Henderson. I'm a big gunner bounce back guy, like, obviously. Like, that's, like, the easiest take of all time. So I'm deciding, coach, between my two doppelgangers.

Oh. Gunner and Bobby. And how about those names? I don't think anyone's ever. Does Bobby ever change? Bob Witt? Can't. Robert Witt Jr. is pretty good.

That feels like some good Vinnie P. messing around. I'm high on the Royals this year. I mentioned they brought the fences in at college. often. That's got to help a little bit. Gunner is going to get protection from Pete. I'm assuming. Whoa. Whoa. This is, this is tough. Okay, for the last three years, I'm going to get that sheet up. Nice, Trev. Look at you. You're a front office man. Looking for the weakness in the market. Are we even, are these guys even on this list? Bobby Witt with 85.

and then obviously, you know, Gunner was hurt last year, so that kind of hurts his total. I can't block anybody from you. Trust your heart. With, like, the Orioles pick or the, you already have a first base and so Vinny's out. I think I'm,

I'm gonna go with who I think's the more dynamic player. And like, the guys are both, I'm going Bobby Wood Jr. here. I'm taking Bobby Witt. Trev, I think that's a pick. Interesting from Bobby. Bobby, 23 and 24, 30 homers, 32.

He went down to 23 last year. He did lead the league in doubles and a little talking baseball special. They moved the fences in a little bit, right? You said that? You said that? I stopped listening. Oh, okay. Okay.

That's a little talking baseball special for you. I said out like at least three times. I stopped listening. I'll be honest. I got my draft board over here. I'm really focused. Also, in Baltimore, who knows what the fences are going to be this year? They change every year.

Yeah. Move it back. Move it in. Make it higher. Make it shorter. Kind of crazy. Bobby's a pick. I think he's as safe as it gets.

Yeah, I like Bobby. Gunner's great. No qualms with Gunner. There's another shortstop option that I like as well. I want to say why another reason, AL Central pitching. Oh. You're going there. I mean, that's nasty work, Coach Treve.

But you might be right. All right, so you're Cal, Bryce, Bobby Shoah. Oh. I have Soto Judge and Kurtz like that a lot. I think, Trev, you got my brain spinning about position of weakness. I'll be high and tight with it. I think there's only, oh, well, There's one power second baseman, or there's one best second baseman at this point.

It's Catele-Marte. I will take him, plays in a great hitters park. That team hits every year. Second base, there's jazz, but Judge would block you on jazz. I think that limits the field over there for you a little bit. And I just think who he has been the past couple years at the second base position can't be denied. He had 28 homers in 126 games last year, 36 and 136 the season before Ketel.

It's a really good pick. It does limit me. It's a nice one. I thought about going Ketel there. Corby and Carol, get out of here. Yeah, it's tough. Another second base option also hurt Jackson Holiday with a hamate bone. I wasn't really going to go ham, but...

No. You might have sometimes at the end of these drafts, you get a little loopy that I could. I could have seen a last round Jackson holiday. Because I could have blocked Gunner from you. Stop playing defense. I like you. Start playing offense, pal. We're hitting homers.

You also forgot about one guy that hits homers that plays second base. It's on a new team this year. Oh. I don't need to pick them right now. Okay. I mean, Caleb Durbin late. That's fine. Is Caleb?

What's Caleb Durbin listed at? He's listed at second. I think they're going, it's currently mayor, mayor at third, Durbin at second. I don't think that's the case. If you talk to Red Sox people, I think he's going to play third and Meyer can kind of play wherever.

I think they might move Meyer to second base. You know what? Me and Jolly Olive, who does some baseball content on the internet, we had a chuckle because we do the tier list before every season. Last year's second base tier list when we recorded it,

the Red Sox second baseman was Christian Campbell Alex Bregman Oh, because he was That's right, that's funny So that was never right Was never right No, everybody knew that that was not the truth

For about one week Alex Bregman was the Red Sox second baseman And that's when me and Jolly Oliver recorded last year You got the ball coach I do have the ball And I think I'm going to fill a nice hole here God, this is a kind of a stacked position. Look at the third base position.

It's pretty stacked. You talked about Junior Caminero. Obviously, Gino. He's in Sinci. I don't have anybody from Sinci, do I? No. God, that's a good one, isn't it? Not bad.

That's... Gino and Sincereo. Some value. There's value there. Center field is still in place. for both of us. You know who I'm going to pick in center field.

And we should have, we should. You know who I'm going to pick in center for. I feel mad we didn't say this before. Julio getting just blocked by, Julio getting blocked by Cal being the best power hitting catcher of all time. It's kind of brutal for this draft every year. But. Why?

Well, Julio's amazing. I think he would probably be the first center fielder off the board. But he gets blocked. by the first catcher off the board. Byron Buxton would like a word. Make it happen. He's doing it. He's going to just run it. People are going to fall in love with Byron Bucks on the international stage, baby.
