Starting point is 00:00:01 Hello and welcome to talking baseball. We got some big win streaks as we leave the dog days and head into September. Midnight Johnny DeLucah. Let's talk ball. Late night Lamont, midnight Johnny. Oh, you need a pitcher, huh? Uh, Jake Bennett. They have a justice on the Yankees.
Starting point is 00:00:25 He's out. Double. Have that as a double. Hello and welcome to talk. in baseball presented by Fanatic Sports and Casino. If you're locking in your baseball bets, Fanatic Sports and Casino is the place to do it. Winning hits different here.
Starting point is 00:00:41 I'm Jake Storelli. That is Coach Trev, Trevor Plouf. Rob Serocco producing his butt off. And then the Mighty Quinn? Is it a Wally Pip situation again? I don't know. We had a big warehouse weekend. Dalt's a grinder.
Starting point is 00:00:56 We all know it. In baseball season's almost done grinding, Trev. It's August 31st, Pop. We're here. How are you? It's August 31st today. I never know how many days are in months. You know how some people know that.
Starting point is 00:01:10 There's some formula for that. I don't know. It's not a big deal. I'm doing great. I also was up late last night flying back to California. And I was with Chris Rose. And just so you guys know how much ball we love. On his screen, what was he watching?
Starting point is 00:01:30 Money ball Okay On my screen What was I watching? A League of their own It was just Just ball So we're
Starting point is 00:01:40 I I I League of their own is my favorite movie And more on that later We're gonna break down Those two films in depth
Starting point is 00:01:47 Maybe we'll talk Some Marlins Nats Uh no people Gotta be real with you It's literally August 31st Some series are getting skipped We don't have time for it Uh
Starting point is 00:01:59 Although there are are some big movements. Did you know there's a new NL playoff team? The American League wildcard team. A couple birds are chirping. The Diamondbacks World Series doc is going to go so hard. People are going to think it's made up. Corbyn Burns throwing in minor league games. With a jersey that looked like my shirt. By the way, this is my punishment for the Twins losing, getting swept by the Padres. Shout out Ryan Cohen. How was your last series?
Starting point is 00:02:31 Ryan, we'll talk about it. Yeah, brutal. I didn't have the shirt and now you have the shirt and they get swept on a some odd Taylor dunk. There is a lot of fun baseball. Yanks, Red Sox. And, you know, we mentioned the new fanatic sports and casino. Milwaukee Brewers over.
Starting point is 00:02:53 Yeah. That cat. That cashed on Saturday. A month of baseball left. I don't give out financial advice. I mean, Silver stocks and bro. I'll just never bet on baseball because it's just ingrained in my head.
Starting point is 00:03:08 But I wish I could join you every single year on it. Rob, you missed a real tree. This is deep cut for John Boy Media fans, but we'll, and then we'll get into the baseball. A highlight of this warehouse weekend was Trev teaching Jimmy Norp and Dan Rourke about investing. Oh, my. What a real treat. Yeah. What I realize is I think I should just sit down everybody that's in the warehouse and tell about it.
Starting point is 00:03:35 Literally, yes. There's just a few things you got to know and you don't get taught it. No, no. Not a lot of schools do that. Can I call you later, Trev? Can we go over and I love to. Whatever you need. I mean, I don't have any groundbreaking stuff. No, no, no. I just want to hear what you said.
Starting point is 00:03:52 You know? 7% of. a bad year. Let's do baseball. We're better at that. Maybe. It starts out on a Monday in the American League with the series. Yankees socks, kid, and the Yankees sweep the Boston Red Sox. Kind of, it was four games, but the Saturday doubleheader was a makeup from June. They lost that game. So if you put that back, the Yanks sweep, they win three out of four. It starts with Cam Schlittler, shutting down the Red Sox. The only run scored in that game, Paul Goldschmidt,
Starting point is 00:04:29 the young and the gold, if you will. Yankees tight games late in games three and four. They open it up late, a controversial Raphaelah, catch, no catch. I want the coach's thoughts on that one. We'll get them coming up. They lost ground because the Tampa Bay race swept Ryan Cohen, San Diego Padres. A couple big Tampa innings in those first two.
Starting point is 00:04:54 games. Caminero is all over this series. And then, like we mentioned, Midnight Johnny DeLuca with the assist Samad Taylor dunks it over the wall. I ain't ever seen that one before. As Tampa sweeps. Speaking of sweeps, Trev. The Toronto Blue Jays. Okay. Who'd they sweep? The Seattle Mariners. Oh my God. D.E.D. Dead. Cease pursuing that Cy Young in game one. George Springer, 4-4, sloppy Seattle, and then Mack Scherzer, vintage. Crazy start as Toronto sweeps. The Scoobel Return game. Detroit hosts the Los Angeles Dodgers.
Starting point is 00:05:42 The Dodgers take two out of three. They take the bread games. Freddie Freeman with a game winner in that first one. Kevin McGonagall, who probably idolizes Freddie Freeman in some way, gets the game winner in that second. game and then how about glass now that matters big second start for him coming back as he shuts it down white socks take two out of three from the twins uh the andrew ben tendy game happens in game two the zebby matthews game happens in game three he's perfect through six that's enough for
Starting point is 00:06:16 the twins to salvage the set did you know the royals are really hot i did i did and it's with this A. L. You never know. It would have been a little crazy if they won that final game. They do not. After winning the first two, Cleveland's offense kicks into gear. There's J-Ram. There's Chase DeLotter. Nathaniel Lowe. Till the land to the opposite field. Nobody cares. Oriole sweep. Sorry, Guardians fans.
Starting point is 00:06:41 Oriole sweep. I mentioned birds. Wait for Trev's standings. They sweep the athletics. Gunner Henderson shows up in that last game. Four for four with two home runs. These birds, get three in Sacramento. And then your Best Western Road Warriors, it's the Philadelphia Phillies. Life's a trip. Go to Best Western stay there.
Starting point is 00:07:06 And the Phillies, they stayed in Anaheim, or is it L.A.? Edmundo Sosa. Pinch hit Grand Salami off of Sammy Peralta in that first game. Chris Sanchez, not letting the Cy Young hopes die yet. and then J.T. Realmudo and Edmundo Sosa again. These pitches love Sosa. Phillies. Get the sweep in Anaheim. Life's a trip. Make the most of it with Best West.
Starting point is 00:07:33 And that's what happened in the Yale. It's nice to take care of business against the A's. Oh, was that targeted? To who? I don't know. At a team that plays at Target Field? Oh, man, I got the standings, Pop. Let's just not get into it right now. Late flight last night.
Starting point is 00:07:53 I want to talk about some other late night stuff going on. We'll get there. We'll start out east in the American League. Your Yanks. All right. Looking good four and a half games behind the Tampa Bay race who are 82 and 54, 78 and 59 for the Bronx bombers. Red Sox 74 and 63. They're the radio guys.
Starting point is 00:08:12 He's mean. He's mean. I'll just say it right now. Oh. Meany. A bully. Yeah. What's the fight?
Starting point is 00:08:19 Well, he doesn't want to fight. What's his team? Okay. Baltimore. 68 and 69. That's good enough to get you close to the playoffs. We'll get to that soon. 68 and 74 for the Toronto Blue Jays in the central. Go White Sox go. 72 and 64 for them, three and a half games over the Cleveland Guardians. The only other team above 500 in the division at 69 and 68. My twins,
Starting point is 00:08:42 been three years of this in a row after the All-Star break. We're kind of, you know, not doing great. So, you know, hey, I'll read you the standings in the wild card soon. shot. 65 and 72 and 72 and 73 for the tiger. 62 and 76 for the surging Kansas City Royals out west. The Houston Astros won game over 5, 69 and 68. They got a two game lead over the Texas Rangers. We're 67 and 70. Seattle, you're dead. 64 and 73.
Starting point is 00:09:12 Don't care. Don't want to hear it. 53 and 84 for the A's. 52 and 85 for the Angels. And that's the regular standings. Let's get to the wild card, Jake, where you're Yanks. And the Boston Red Sox seemed to be on a collision course for a wild card first round matchup. They got the first two spots followed by the Cleveland Guard Dogs in spot number three. One game behind them are the Baltimore Orioles, one and a half games out from Cleveland are the Toronto Blue Jays. Texas is only two games out of the wild card.
Starting point is 00:09:47 And that's as far as I'm going, Jake. Wow. No. Those are the standings in the American League. No twins mention mariners and tigers in the bad place. I mean, it's tough to even mention the Rangers who are three games under 500. I mean, but they're two games out, so I feel like I have to mention it. Yeah, and I mean, there's a big difference for the Texas Rangers
Starting point is 00:10:09 who are two games out of the division and the wild card compared to the Seattle Mariners who are five and five now. Like, so is what I was saying. The Mariners let this thing drag on that it's feeling. very 23 Padres. It's feeling very like just teams that were waiting for the light bulb to go on all year and it just never did. Great job with the standings, Coach Trev. I do think it starts off, and we're going to be high and tight people. You hear a little bit of in our voice and we're leaking towards the fun stuff. Get, October. It matters. Here, twins, nine and 17.
Starting point is 00:10:53 since the trade deadline. That's just a stat. Yankees Red Sox played. And hey, if I got any of my Yankees fans checking in or Red Sox fans checking in, I'm going to hit you on both sides on this. We did a Talking Yanks episode and people, you know, didn't like our enthusiasm.
Starting point is 00:11:08 One, we just had a big warehouse weekend. Little poppies beat up. I was between the pipes and my God, this little body is hurting. Follow-up. I don't know. I don't know how excited Yankee fans should be that they secured basically a wild-cart spot.
Starting point is 00:11:25 Like, that doesn't, we used to play for bigger things over here. That being said, that final game was a massive one. If the Yankees lose that game, they lose the season set to the Red Sox. It would have been a two-game lead, which that means if the Red Sox tie them, they get the advantage. Now it's a four-game lead on the Boston Red Sox, which means it's a five-game lead that the Red Sox have to be that much better than them the rest of the way.
Starting point is 00:11:53 And that's a tough ask as we have less than a month of ball left. I guess, coach, you got to see the environment of 40 Yankee fans watching Yankees baseball this weekend. What else do you need to add to the fire? I don't know. It's technically a four and a half game lead. But anyways, yeah, you guys are great. It's a great series. I, we'll joke about the rivalry.
Starting point is 00:12:15 That's what you guys call it, right? I think so. But it is fun. When you match up, especially when both teams are playing well, and there are playoff implications. It's a great series. We had some fireworks here. I mean, I know the Yankees kind of took care of business,
Starting point is 00:12:29 but there are some things going on during the game. Shout out Goldie for that third inning homer. It was the only run of the first game. And then we had some, we had some stuff. I guess, like, you talked about what happened in the game, but there were some things kind of like outside of the lines almost that went down. First of all, catch, no catch on the Raphaela play. I think, you know, obviously it stood.
Starting point is 00:12:55 They called it a no catch on the field. They went and reviewed it and they said there was no indisputable evidence to overturn it. The more and more I look at it, the more and more confused I get. So really it was going to be the call to stand on the field. I would lean catch on it. I don't know how you feel. There was a few angles that looked like the ball might have rattled around and touched the grass. I think we're going to get one right here.
Starting point is 00:13:15 Like he gets it. His glove is undripped and like right there for a split second. There's grass. So then, you know, that's no catch. But if it's called a catch on the field, it is a catch. This all led to, what, was it a five-run inning after this? Yeah, the wheels fall off. It leads to a bunt and then there's a hit and then there's a three-run homer.
Starting point is 00:13:36 Yeah, it felt like it ended the game, which you could spin a baseball side of it. Ranger Suarez, don't give up a three-run homer to Elliot Ramos, who's been in a horrible, horrible funk. Although he's been brought in the face lefties, he hasn't faced lefties. it's a huge playing. Any fan base would be mad about it. And yeah, on talking Yanks, we did kind of the whole debate because, you know, Jimmy's deep in the world of cricket
Starting point is 00:13:58 and in cricket, they don't even make the call. They'll just review it. And like, the call doesn't matter. But for me, I have to make a call. The base runners. Right. And that's where I also jump to other sports. I'm like, is there a continuation that if it's ever borderline,
Starting point is 00:14:14 do you just play it out like it's not a catch and like defenders know that so the game flows better? I don't know. It's tricky because also... You don't have to do everything like cricket, Jimmy. Also the center fielder and Macy's that and I'm like, I kind of think that's a catch. But even, dude, upon replay review, I don't know.
Starting point is 00:14:31 And I've seen that replay how many times now? I know. He gets right, like he gets the glove under there. There's like this instance right here where it's like that's, there's no glove under that ball. So it's, it is touching the grass. But at the same time, if it's secured in the glove, then it can touch the grass.
Starting point is 00:14:49 Right. And so like what's secured in the glove? It's, uh... I have like I, again, we both have watched this a million times. I lean catch here. I lean catch as well. I know Yankee fans might not like that. Yeah. Sadly, that's none of my business anymore. The other one, Rob, if you got the Cody Bellinger throw.
Starting point is 00:15:09 Yeah, nice. One nothing game and, you know, Yankee fans almost got sick of me oozing about belly at one point. because he did go through a funk before he went on the IL. It's just the Yankees who, again, going back to the 2024 World Series, reminder, their only World Series in 16 years where they got laughed off the field, basically. Cody Bellinger in the way he plays baseball, some of the best defense you're ever going to see a left fielder play,
Starting point is 00:15:37 100 mile per hour throw. For a guy that's like his throwing arm might be one of his last skills you mentioned with Cody, that having him back helps change things. And then, yeah, it's too late rallies. Yankees bullpen with some Paul Blackburn. Like if that's a guy that every team has a couple bullpen guys that you don't really know. You can't follow every team in the depths of the bullpen.
Starting point is 00:16:02 Well, Paul Blackburn has turned into as a relief pitching option, was massive in this series. And the Yanks, I don't know. It was an exhale in Yankee land. Like, are we going to have to fend off Boston the rest of the? of the year. And we all know it's a funny sport. Let's see what happens. But this felt like some of the
Starting point is 00:16:19 biggest Yankee games in a while and the Yankees answered, which that kind of hasn't been the theme. Two things. Number one, how fun are bullpens? Like, they're just crazy. Try to build a bullpen and it's not going to work. Like, just grab some guys from a heat pile and, like, coach them up a little
Starting point is 00:16:35 little bit. It works. I don't know. Sometimes it does. Sometimes it's awful. It is a fickle, fickle thing. Do you want to talk about the Boston radio guy, Will Fleming? Do you care about that? If you'd like, I don't... Honestly, not really. If you don't know what happened,
Starting point is 00:16:54 Jazz ended up stealing, you know, up six runs, still third base. Do you still second base as well? Yeah. So it steals two bags. And, you know, again, a game that decides the tiebreaker. Yeah. And, you know, the old adage when I played was six after six.
Starting point is 00:17:13 That's kind of when things started to slow down. But there are caveats that. This is a very important game. And it changes who you bring in in your bullpen. It changes all sorts of things. You can keep guys down from getting up in the bullpen. I'm so out on it. Every single unwritten rule favors the pitcher.
Starting point is 00:17:33 I just, I can't, man. And that was aggressive. He was calling for Hobby Moran to go fight jazz chisholm. Great. Like, what do we do with? I would solve it. You have to know. know your role.
Starting point is 00:17:45 You are a radio guy. You're not on the field, so stop acting like you're a tough guy. That's crazy to me. You could complain about it. That's fine. Voice your opinion. If you want to say, I don't like that he steals third base and they're not holding on it first and he steals that.
Starting point is 00:18:02 Great. You mentioned it's, Will Middoughbrewks is on the call with him and I think Will did a good job. It's, it's defensive indifference. He's upset. You're playing to your fan base a little bit, which is great. But calling for someone to What are you doing? Yeah.
Starting point is 00:18:17 I guess I don't support that. Hey, every team's local call is for the local call. So that's where I kind of dip out a little bit. Dude, running up the, it's a six-run game. It's Yankees Red Sox. Like, I've seen leads evaporate. I mean, what was the Giants Reds game the other day? It was what?
Starting point is 00:18:37 Six runs in the ninth? Like, six runs? No. No. And it's not padding stats. It's defensive indifference, by the way. Yeah, and by the way, they had him picked off at third. I forget if that's Durbin over there.
Starting point is 00:18:50 If he's covering third, then Jazz gets out. And now, Jazz, what are you doing getting thrown out? Up and six? Just play baseball. They said they were waving the white flag when they brought the infield in. So you're not. Seems like you're still playing. Play the game.
Starting point is 00:19:07 Go, Yankees Go is what I'd say. That was just too much Yankees' Red Sox right there. This episode is sponsored by Lids. Sure, we're all looking for it, October, but Lids has you covered in late summer as we gear up for the NFL season, exclusive designs from the 47 and new era. Starting point is 00:19:46 And you're going to save 15% on your next in-store purchase when you text John Boy to 29017. Message and data rates and exclusions apply. Well, it ties into the Tampa Bay race, who the Yankees are hoping to set their sights on them, but they wake up after this Red Sox series and they see that the race sweep and the final game and a highlight that I think might be a highlight for a long time.
Starting point is 00:20:14 Mason Miller in. The Padres are 59 and 0 went up in the ninth inning. And if you haven't seen this yet, I mean, this is John. I know we point a lot of people to our YouTube. It's just wild. Midnight Johnny DeLuca, obviously. Deep fly ball to short, it is a sneaky short left field. People forget that.
Starting point is 00:20:36 Or if you're a baseball person, remember the long-go homer. Samad Taylor catches it and then he pool-dunks it over the small wall there instead of game over, it's a tie game. I just, I don't know what to say about this because he makes the catch and I feel, this is what I feel like happened. I feel like Samad Taylor made that catch and he was like buzzing. Like, oh my gosh, I just made a sick catch.
Starting point is 00:21:06 and then kind of like body went numb didn't finish it and then all of a sudden yeah he's it's that it's a perfect height for his hand to nail the top of the wall
Starting point is 00:21:21 and you're just not going to beat physics like that's there's a lot of torque coming when you're running that hard and your glove comes down the wall like it's it's just like it was the perfect storm that is like
Starting point is 00:21:34 that's the quintessential baseball play in a weird baseball stadium right there. Zander Bogart's... That buffet has been getting a lot of run this year. That's like the third time we've mentioned the buffet in left field. It's a baseball buffet of content. And why is the food right behind the wall? I don't...
Starting point is 00:21:52 It feels unnecessary. It feels like we could have done anything else besides that, but we don't... It's like a net or something. I don't know. Because if you want to complain about that, you can talk about the Trap taking a homer away from Zander Bogartz. It turns into an out. it's crazy. I won't knock it, and there's some, you know, Fernando gets tossed for a batter's
Starting point is 00:22:12 interference in one of these games. Hey, the race played great baseball. They had big, big old innings where they put a ton of pressure on youth up and down their lineup, and they put up crooked numbers, and they pitch enough, and we've highlighted Baker on the back end and how good he's been this year. And hey, Padres have lost 11 of their past 13 games in Tampa. but it can be a house of horrors for a lot of teams. And like I said, 59 and 0 when leading after eight innings this season. Rays were 2 and 48 when trailing after eight. And sometimes that's just baseball, coach.
Starting point is 00:22:46 You know, we talk about Ray is going to Ray. This is a stat I love. 14th sweep of the season? That is a good stance. We're always like, it's so tough to sweep. It's so tough to sweep. And the Ray is like, no, we're good. We're leading Major League Baseball and that stat,
Starting point is 00:23:03 obviously and we just tied our franchise record 14 times someone has come to play the raise and they've left the series with zero wins that's that's incredible there's other good quotes here too drew russ mousson was talking about um how this is this is a series we can point to and tell our guys who haven't experienced postseason baseball every day is like this it's a roller coaster rides games are close and you win on the margins and that is that's what we're talking about people. Chandler Simpson gives them the lead and he's screaming. Yeah, the Ray's four and a half game lead over those Yankees in the AL East.
Starting point is 00:23:42 They're going to be the top seed unless they slow down and the Yankees pick it up. They do have a four game set. I think the last game of the season. So that's what Yankee fans are telling themselves. Get it down to two, get it down to three. But it could also be eight by the time we get there because this Ray's team, their formula just works. We also haven't talked to Arizona yet,
Starting point is 00:24:03 who, spoiler alert, jumped the Padres in the standings, and where do they end the seasons? Three games versus each other. That's going to be. So good. It's in San Diego, too. Oh, gosh. Trevor, the Blue Jays sweep.
Starting point is 00:24:18 I have a phenomenal award coming from this series. If you don't know, it's the elder guy who pitches in the last game. So I'll let you go for a little bit, Toronto, like you mentioned, they're still alive in this wildcard chase. It looked like the guards were going and any team could die. A big Springer series. What else do you see? This is the series, I think, that ends the Mariners season.
Starting point is 00:24:44 And, hey, maybe they'll make me regret saying that I don't care anymore at this point. When a guy scores from second base because your pitcher is just not even really paying attention and not knowing where the runners are, that to me is like point. pointing to we're not doing things the right way up there. And Seattle fans are like, have you been watching us play baseball? Yeah. And I did against the twins and you actually looked pretty good. But records tough.
Starting point is 00:25:12 Blue Jays are kind of on a heater as well. I mentioned where they're at in the standings. A couple of nice pitching performances by CIS and then your guy Scherz are there. A nice comeback win in game two. Like you kind of had it all. Jose Soriano with a nice star Louis Varland
Starting point is 00:25:31 doing his thing I don't know they're getting right at the right time where the Mariners there was like the littlest slice of life about a week ago
Starting point is 00:25:41 and now I think it's all gone Mariners would need to finish 17 and 9 to get to 500 yeah that that bizardo slot play and hey also if Toronto if you want to believe my guy Bateman is the one who did that and the way he's playing
Starting point is 00:25:56 with his hair on fire and just setting the tone for that team, and that's who they got for Gossmann. Alejandro Kirk's playing out of his mind. And yeah, I'm going to highlight some Shurs in a little bit. And I think, Trev, in this Dodgers-Tiger series, you're going to highlight some scoubs coming up. Yeah. Wasn't the knock on Okomoto?
Starting point is 00:26:17 We weren't sure if he's going to be able to hit for power? Correct. Oh, okay. He's got 28, Jimmy Janks. Correct. Still a deep-cut rookie of the year chance. he'd have to go nuts in September. But maybe he will.
Starting point is 00:26:29 Because I think Toronto's starting to believe again, Big Papa. Yeah, Kirk's August, 341, 5 homers, 20 runs driven in 946. Okay, 20 runs in a month is fun. No who's also kind of, know who's also dead. If we want to call teams that, the Tigers, the Motor City kitties. I know they had good energy for a while and it kind of felt like they were coming. And it was, wait, is Detroit going to do this? I thought they might come back for the division.
Starting point is 00:26:56 They've lost 12 of their last 15. They've lost five straight series. Without McGonigal, they get swept in this. And the Dodgers, I mean, they're just kind of keeping tabs on who's back. And Snell strikes out 10 over 5. Glass now with a big old outing. I think that's what the L.A. fans are looking for. Yep.
Starting point is 00:27:20 Again, we're at now with these teams, like the Tigers, the Mariners, the Mariners, the twins. It's going to take a miraculous last four weeks of the season to get anything done. For some reason, I'm not ready to call the Tigers dead. Really? I'm not. I'm not. Seattle feels that way and maybe I should be.
Starting point is 00:27:42 Maybe I'm just scared of the Tigers and I've seen what they've done to my twins. Okay. Yeah. I have them all dead. Yeah, I mean, five and a half is tough. And, man, I guess. Okay, Jake. they're dead.
Starting point is 00:27:58 Okay, thank you. Because, yeah, and I... Seattle's dead. Detroit's dead. And I can't bring myself to say the next team. They, just a reminder, before the start of the season, maybe the two, well, the Dodgers seemed like the biggest locks. After them, the biggest divisional locks felt like Seattle and Detroit.
Starting point is 00:28:21 And it's looking like they're both not going to make the dance. It's looking like they're both not going to be 500. Do you, yeah. Are you worried about LA the Dodgers offense? Probably no, right? No, I mean, let's see what it looks like in September. If it becomes more of a storyline, yes.
Starting point is 00:28:41 You know, John's will comment on our stuff from time to time. Like that. I do too. Because he's got no filter. He's quick to point out of the aging roster with the Dodgers. Where are you at on? that. Like we are seeing some things. Like, obviously, Mookie is, you know, I don't even know how old Muky is he 33. I'll cut you off at the pass here. I know, you know, Freddy's 36. Like,
Starting point is 00:29:10 yeah. Guess what? They're back-to-back champs, bro. I know. I know. I agree. I'm just, I'm just, is there a chance? Yes. Could you look at this team and be like, man, come October. Dude, they also hit on the interstate as a playoff team last year, and they still won the World Series. They also have played so much baseball. Yeah, they might be tired. They can rest them. They can do it.
Starting point is 00:29:37 No, it's not going to matter for me. When it's the eighth inning of a tied game and Mookie or Freddie is up, I'm not going to give a damn about their age. I'd be a lot more worried about the age of the 23-year-old prospect playing in his first game that matters. that's what I'd be more worried about. Scoobble, Snell and Glass now. Combined two runs on nine heads, 18 innings.
Starting point is 00:30:01 Yeah, let me know how that works in October. How does that go? Yeah. Like the Dodgers team that we remember getting clipped, had Lance Lynn twirling it out there. No offense to Big Lance. A stud, amazing career, but he shouldn't have been out there at that point.
Starting point is 00:30:14 Some scubel stuff coming later. I think the rest of the A.L. is pretty tidy. White Sox take two out of three from the twins, and that's obvious. Trev, I'll give you a 20 seconds. What do you want me to say? White Sox are going to win the division. And the twins have played bad balls since the deadline.
Starting point is 00:30:31 They added. They've done everything they should have done this year. Some untimely injuries, I think, have hurt, you know, Joe Ryan going down. He's been bad with some hip stuff or leg stuff since it's actually his glute. Oh. Since the All-Star break. I don't know. Walker Jenkins made his debut.
Starting point is 00:30:52 Shout out Walker Jenkins. It's done. White Sox make history with their 71st winning game one. No team that had three straight 100 lost seasons had ever won more than 70 games this season. So again, what's been a beautiful story for the White Sox all year, Colson Montgomery sneaking up on 30 homers. They're a fun team, man.
Starting point is 00:31:15 I was worried they were going to come back to Earth and they've kept themselves separated from the rest of that central slop. Speaking of, Royal's guards. And the Royals took two out of three because they're just in Fuego. They are in Fuego. Michael Waka's in Fuego. Dude, it's just crazy. If this started three weeks earlier, maybe we could be telling a different story.
Starting point is 00:31:38 Yeah, they dealt with injuries and then just kind of like they couldn't find their footing. And then all of a sudden, yeah, I think the biggest thing is, well, some of this pitching. I mean, Waka hitting 97. 97.8. fastest pitch since when 2017 he average 90 almost 95 miles on his cutter. Where the hell is that coming from?
Starting point is 00:32:02 Crazy. But yeah, the resurgence of I don't know what it's called the resurgence but Jack Caglione doing his thing has obviously helped and a little bit too late for the Royals. But at least you feel like you know,
Starting point is 00:32:16 that's a nice thing to finish the season strong even though you know, it's not probably going to get you and you are still nice. Yeah, they've got six losses to, or excuse me, five losses to go to 500. So, hey, if they want to do a Tampa Bay undefeated month and get in the dance, let's do it.
Starting point is 00:32:35 And they were 12 of 13 at a certain point. And Cleveland fans, would you have traded a series loss to get Jose Ramirez hot? Because he's teaser on Enflago coming up. Okay. My last bird team, the Baltimore Orioles, they do sweep the athletics. and you mentioned your disappointment with Minnesota not doing that. Man, I'll tell you what. Seeing, well, hey, my guy Pete Alonzo gets hit in the head,
Starting point is 00:33:01 and you know I'm worried about that. Orioles are finding a little bit of identity. You don't want to be a lefty on the mound of Kobe Mayo's out there. Gunner Henderson figure it out. Seeing that 4-4-2 homer day, dude, if he could turn that into a September with like an OPS in the 9s, nobody's joined Pete at the party.
Starting point is 00:33:21 That's all they need. Well, I mean, they have been hitting as a team. That's kind of what's been carrying them through this kind of run. Like they've been raking. And then somehow, like, they're without two of their best relievers, but their bullpen has done a really good job of kind of just like, like we talked about earlier, just like figuring it out. Kittridge, Sanders, Garcia, Kanoe, like these guys have all stepped up.
Starting point is 00:33:44 I think they have all those guys. There's how many guys, one, two, three, four, five, six, seven guys have had a save in the last couple weeks. So, like, they're, like, they're just figuring it out on the fly, which is great. And, yeah, they're, they're raking, man. Um, I have the, um, some stats since. Okay. And in last two months, 104 way to runs created plus, uh, that's six,
Starting point is 00:34:09 the majorly baseball in that time, uh, 68 home runs. That's six in baseball during that time. Peter Lonzo has been going off. We mentioned Kobe Mayo. Uh, he's got nine homers during. that's time Christian, Christian Inconiastrian, Colton Couser, all those guys have been good. And that's kind of what it takes is go bang the ball around the ballpark.
Starting point is 00:34:29 One of the guys who got the save, Alex Hoppy, who's he's been clean since he got traded in the Taylor Ward trade. So that's, you know, we're talking, or he'll sell and there goes a rental. And now they've helped their bullpen. And you know who's thrown minor league games coach? Felix Bautista. Yeah, we need to get him.
Starting point is 00:34:48 Yeah, he needs to be back. Yeah, it would be great. Or maybe they don't need him. I don't know. That could be very interesting. I have some Orioles stock. Philly's proud of you. We'll hit you in the N.O.
Starting point is 00:35:00 We'll hit you in the N.O. Wade Meckler. And the National League continues to start and stop with the Milwaukee Brewers, who they win the first two games. Logan Henderson is a historic starting pitcher. Did you know that Zach Gallen, never giving up three runs thing? Remember that whole deal?
Starting point is 00:35:23 Jackson Cherio is a historic young player. And when the Texas Rangers took the lead in that third game, it was the first time they had it in the series, and they held on to salvage the set two out of three. Some great Pat Murphy quotes, new segment of the show. What did Pat Murphy say? The Houston Astros took two out of three from the New York Mets. Hasn't been an easy task with the boys from flushing.
Starting point is 00:35:46 And Juan Soto is back, and Juan Soto is homering. That being said, Houston got a good start. Hunter Brown went. 6.2 10 ponches. They could use him. And how about an afternoon session from late night Lamont? Astros get the set. Of course, they're in the playoffs.
Starting point is 00:36:04 The Reds take two out of three from the Cubbies. Cubbies, be careful now. Because they've got some, they're slipping a little bit again, and they've done that this year. You know who's not? Well, Sal Stewart, who helped the Reds win these games and is probably going to be an all rookie of the year. Pete Crow Armstrong's out of his mind.
Starting point is 00:36:23 Five homers in two games. Sammy Sosa told him he was going to hit three, so he did. And that's not how life's supposed to work, but it is for PCA. I think it's an eight and a half B-war. It's August. Diamondbacks and Giants, you split four. That's a real bad sign on this show, and it's a bad sign this time here. But it actually brought the Diamondbacks into the postseason.
Starting point is 00:36:47 Spoiler for the standings. They split four. Drew Gilbert chokes a couple out. Noot Bar with the Grand Salami into the drink. Oh! Snakes. Is Kattel coming back? That's fun.
Starting point is 00:37:02 Marlins versus Nationals. Nationals take the first two out of three games. They're playing four. It's a wraparound series. Jackson Kent pitched well. That's fantastic. Nationals bullpen showed up in that final game. Odo!
Starting point is 00:37:18 Still a little bit of Marlins stock. Pirates take two out of three from St. Louis. The Mighty Quinn Matthews. Was he Wally Pippin like our Quinn? Brandon Lau with a nice lead off Homer and a nice defensive stop to end it. As Merlin Valdez, you know he's going opposite field, the magician. Pirates win the set. And then, Rocky's Braves.
Starting point is 00:37:41 Be Brave like the Braves. A couple close ones. But the Braves get it done late. It's enough to sweep the series. Michael Harris Jr. is dancing on second base. That always does it for me. Mayley. Playoff innings? Absolutely. That's what happened in the National League. Say T.J. Rumfield's name. Don't be leaving him out of the end of the year. Former Yankee.
Starting point is 00:38:05 Former Yankee farmhand, T.J. Rumfield. Oh, man. Shout on Michael Harris. Deuce. He's been going off. I got the standing somewhere here. When he's getting jazzy on second base, that really does something for me. I just think about him and Lawrence Butler hanging out all the time. They both have, they're both making $70 million. They sign long-term extensions. like they probably have a lot of fun together. Big second halfs. Yeah, Elbutt crushed us. Okay. Thanks for that, Lawrence.
Starting point is 00:38:35 He also is wearing just ridiculous accessories, but he's cool. He's a video. Look at the shirt I'm wearing. So who's that hell? Yeah, that's true. Okay. Good counter. Let's start out east in the National League where Michael Harris's Atlanta Braves
Starting point is 00:38:50 are five games above the Phillies at 82 and 55. same record as the Dodgers, by the way. The Phillies, as I mentioned, five games back. They're 77 and 60. The Marlins, the only other team above 500. They're 69 and 68. Nationals, that was fun for a little bit this year, 65 and 74. Mets, it was never fun for you.
Starting point is 00:39:10 61 and 76. In the Central, congratulations to your bet. 85 wins for Milwaukee. They're 85 and 52 with an eight game lead over the Cubs. And guess what, guys, the Cubs are a good team. They're a good team, but the Brewers know what they're doing. Cubs 77 and 60. The Cardinal, 68 and 70, send the text to Ollie.
Starting point is 00:39:32 67 and 71 for the Pirates and 65 and 72 for the Reds out west, the Dodgers, 9 and the half game lead over the Diamondbacks, 82 and 55 for them, Diamondbacks 73 and 65. They're a half game above San Diego Padres. The San Diego Ryan Collins, 72 and 65 for them. the giants i mean what are this i know we don't talk about them a lot because they also never caught their footing but like we should probably revisit them in the offseason like what the hell happened 56 and 81 the rockies 52 and 85 in the wild card it's the cubs it's the fillies
Starting point is 00:40:10 uh one two they're actually tied record wise at 77 and 60 so that's interesting as who would host that series um and then the last wild card goes to that the diamondbacks, as you mentioned, a half game up on the Padres, three and a half games up on the Marlins, and that's where I'll stop. Those are the standings in the National League. Yeah, as the National League starts to clear out, and I talked about the perfect playoff picture,
Starting point is 00:40:37 those Diamondbacks, man, they're in the dance as of today. They got a big one with Philly coming up. They miss Sanchez, but you still know a Lazzardo painter. Today's episode is sponsored by Amazon. This back-to-school season, spend less on your kids with Amazon. You want to give your kids a great start to the year, but your back-to-school has a way of absolutely destroying your budget.
Starting point is 00:41:03 The supply list keeps growing. The clothes stop fitting, and somehow there's always one more thing. Amazon helps you handle all of it without losing your mind or your wallet. Trev, you're a dad. How's back-to-school shopping going for you and the kids? Honestly, it's always such a hassle. There's too many options.
Starting point is 00:41:18 there's such a long list each year, and I'll be honest, that's why I love Amazon. They have great deals, and it's a one-stop shop for all of your back-to-school shopping. That's Amazon for back-to-school, everything you need, all in one place, backpacks, lunchboxes, notebooks, headphones,
Starting point is 00:41:33 clothes, great prices, huge selection. And it shows up at your door before you know it. So remember, with Amazon's low back-to-school prices, just spend less on your kids because every dollar you don't spend on them is a dollar you haven't spent on them. Let me ask you this. As far as the National League goes,
Starting point is 00:41:48 maybe we can be quick on this. Just the thought that popped in my head. These are the teams we thought would be in the playoffs. The preseason, these are the teams we thought would be the best teams. Milwaukee, Atlanta, L.A., Chicago, Philadelphia. And then that last one was probably iffy. There was a couple teams that could do it. The Mets.
Starting point is 00:42:07 I hadn't ranked preseason high three. So the Mets are out of it. But the Padres, I probably didn't have the dimebacks in there, to be honest with you. But they're another one of those teams. they're brewers light in that regard. They're going to win games. They're not going to fall flat on their face. They always win games.
Starting point is 00:42:26 If the snakes make the playoffs, Tori Lavello manager of the year conversation, I don't know. For what he's had to deal with? I mean, if you really think about it, I mean, Pat Murphy, he could always, maybe he should just win every year. Walt Weiss tackled a guy and everyone was cool with it.
Starting point is 00:42:47 I don't know. I don't know. If these snakes make the dance. Interesting. It's going to be Pat Murphy. And you know why it probably should be? Because the brewers are on path for 100 wins or so. Some of the Logan Henderson stuff is nuts, man.
Starting point is 00:43:07 16 and 3 in his 19 career starts. I know he's, that's not his record. That's the team's record. And yeah, he's never giving up more than three runs. So that's wild, dude. It's a really good formula. It's a really good formula. If I was building a pitcher and we're like,
Starting point is 00:43:23 here, let me give you like the stats that I want him to have. It'd be like, you can give up three runs and that's it. Like, that would be like my number one stat, I think. It would be like, can you go six innings and give up three runs or less every time you go out there? And Logan Hennigens is like, yeah, I got that. The problem. Done. Like, that's exactly who I want.
Starting point is 00:43:44 Jackson Churio. He joins a list because he has. his third consecutive 20 homer season. We've done this somewhat recently because eight of the previous 16 are Hall of Famers. So again, when you think about Milwaukee and their punchy talent, maybe that guy's not that. He's still young and figuring out. And that's what I love.
Starting point is 00:44:07 Another Pat Murphy quote, they ask him about him. His first sentence, he's still learning the game. He's younger than your prospect. It's true. And I'll put my hand up a little bit because actually the rest of it is that good Pat Murphy's a man He's special the hands go A to B as quick as anyone Bat speed arm strength
Starting point is 00:44:28 A great base underneath them like that Like that Whole team showers together Can we give a shout out to Jake Bowers? Yes absolutely I mean the season this guy's having is incredible 410 ABs on the air He's got 23 bombs he's driven in 76
Starting point is 00:44:46 He's scored 78 he's stolen 10 bases 388 OBP on the year. Don't look at it what it was in August. It's like 450 something. Go get it, big guy. 885 OPS plus 140 or 885 OPS 143 OPS plus. I mean, this is career year. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:45:07 And he's a free agent. Yeah, man. Yeah, I mean, he's bounced around the league for a while. Oh, my God. Talk about Jake. Hey. Let's go, big guy. I mean, we're talking, he's going to get like a real deal payday.
Starting point is 00:45:22 Maybe not like a crazy one, but like enough to set him up. And that is, I mean, like one of the number one reasons like you play the game and he's going to get it done. That makes me really happy. Yeah. Jake, Jake Bowers career earnings 4.6 mil, which, you know, if you invest that right and silver and some different things, that can get you a long way. But no, it is really cool.
Starting point is 00:45:46 Like, you know, not a lot of guys. do what he's doing this year. So I'll be, once we clear up all that CBA and someone pays him, I'll be very happy for that. We should be on lookout for that. Jake Bowers.
Starting point is 00:45:58 Jake Bowers, watch. Add it to the list. Rangers won the final game. Great. They're horrible on the road. How about this? Baby Snaps. Zeke Duran, dude.
Starting point is 00:46:08 Just a goddamn baseball player has played so many positions for him. Skip, literally his Skip, Schumacher said, it's tough to argue against him being their team MVP this year. I mean, is that him in center field? Like the guy...
Starting point is 00:46:23 Yeah, he's been all over. Every day you could put him in a different defensive spot. He's got that dog in him. And you know I like a little cross-eye black? Yeah, we're going to battle. The Houston Astros are in the playoffs. It feels weird talking about them in the NL. And the Mets, again, the second half's been fun.
Starting point is 00:46:42 And McLean continues to pitch well. And Soto's back. Houston wins the set. And I do think it's any conversation would be about them. Late night Lamont shows up. Jeremy Payne, you lead off Homer. Otherwise, I don't have a ton of juice from this series. That's the first game, Hunter Brown gave them their first quality start in 15 games.
Starting point is 00:47:03 They still went seven and seven in those games. But that's obviously something. We're talking about playoffs and what you need to have done there. I mean, if you're the Astros, I think you understand. You'll take whatever you can get for your starters, but it's got to be the Yorgon show in the playoffs. He's actually, I was checking up on this.
Starting point is 00:47:23 I don't think the Major League Triple Crown is going to happen. It doesn't really seem like that. Like if Swarber's going to keep hitting homers and do all, I think he's three or four behind Schwerber in that regard and some back in the RBIs, but he's still leading the American League
Starting point is 00:47:39 Triple Crown, which is something I definitely want to keep an eye on. Houston, at their first place, in the West two games up on the Texas Rangers. You mentioned Hayter and what he's been able to do too. That's... Yeah, man. That's... You got an MVP and you've got the ninth inning isn't a question.
Starting point is 00:48:01 And like, those are... Those are a little analytics for me. I don't know if I need to add a page to the binder. Those are very important things. That even if your team isn't great, a lot can build around that when you get the good Hunter Brown Star. When was Neske twirls one for you? they're a fascinating organization they truly are
Starting point is 00:48:21 I mean they literally just fired their GM with four weeks left to go this season crazy uh they mutually parted ways oh my bad excuse me thank you uh a guy that just might have to be a recurring segment the rest of the way uh peter three pete three homer day they lose the series in cubs fans i mean you guys have been a streaky team this year and it's got to be a little scary um three and seven in their last 10 now. But Pete hits three on Saturday, as the Cubs do, what was it, 150 years of baseball?
Starting point is 00:48:54 Some silly number. I was like, wait, how long have they been playing baseball in Chicago? And then he hits another two the next day. And, dude, it's just looking easy for him, coach. He is, I mean, so many, we talked about, go look at his numbers last year, Jake. He started off great, and then he struggled. He's been doing some different things with his stance.
Starting point is 00:49:14 just kind of like getting ready earlier, getting that leg up there, getting into launch mode earlier. I think it's given them a better chance to see the ball, make better swing decisions. That's been his biggest thing this year is not chasing so much, hammering the ball's in the zone. You could ask any,
Starting point is 00:49:32 the biggest PCA truth are out there going into the season. You could never have guessed the kind of offensive output that he's had this year. I mean, this is, like I just said last week or maybe it was a week and a half ago, I was like, I still think show Hey is the MVP because if you, if you just walked into the season blind and we'd never seen Show Hey before, you'd say, oh my God, do you see what this guy did on the mound? I don't know where I stand on that now. I've been like a firm hold on that. Show Hey is going to win MVP. I don't think he's going to win MVP anymore. Like he's in a little rut offensive. PC has offensive numbers are now better. than his across the board. He plays a platinum level center field. He's so fun, like a wild card. You kind of never know what you're going to get off him in the best way possible.
Starting point is 00:50:27 Plays in a major market. I think that does help people. I think he's going to win it. Now, would that be my pick? I'm still not sure. But I think PCA, if this continues the way it's been happening, and I'm not talking about hitting five homers a series. but if he just kind of like
Starting point is 00:50:46 stays level and has a regular month I think he's gonna win it I think I think the fun thing to take away from it because we're normally not the biggest award guys is that the final month matters yeah like if he keeps playing out of his dome and one of his biggest adjustments this year he didn't hit lefties now he's crushing lefties
Starting point is 00:51:06 he's probably going to be 40 40 and like how where does that land and he's one of if not the best defender in the sport going up against Shoah, what if Shohei goes nuts? So I think that convert can be fun the rest of the way. And Reds fans, congrats on winning the series.
Starting point is 00:51:23 It's a little late. South Stewart, he's the leading rookie of the year candidate. We get more on South Stewart later. Oh, okay, then we're going to have more on that later, people. Cubs don't fucking slide. PCA 911F war. 85B war.
Starting point is 00:51:41 If he gets into the tens, man, that's one of those rare air things. Oh man, he's so fun too. Thank God we're friends with him. How cool? How cool is that for us? Genuinely. Yeah, that's pretty cool.
Starting point is 00:51:53 I need that. I need that my life. Look at me. Is this midlife crisis? We both are. But this is, I had to wear this. Should we tell them our combo? But also like it looks like something I would wear.
Starting point is 00:52:05 Should we tell them our combo we had the other day, Trev, about how we dress? Tell me, because I forget. What would we say? I forget. I think we were just texting. I forget if it was instant. Oh, you sent me an Instagram reel about like what colors. Oh, yeah.
Starting point is 00:52:19 It made me laugh. I got a, dude, shout out Instagram. Instagram Reels has like picked up their algo. I don't know. We had a good combo in the office about it because it can be like weird stuff that gets me. And I'm like, God damn. It was this guy just doing different colors of clothing that work together and like labeling them with one word. And he'd be like, cream and beige, sophisticated.
Starting point is 00:52:42 And then he'd go to the next one. And I was like, this is fire, sending it to Trev. And then Trev said, Trev was like, do we need to start dressing like adults? And it's like, fuck, we're definitely getting close. Yeah, I know. What does that even mean? I just, I think you just give up.
Starting point is 00:52:56 That's what happens. I see it all the time in people. I'm not going to do that. Chris Rose looks great. PCA 594 against lefties last year, 999 against him this year. That's an insane stat. That'll do.
Starting point is 00:53:09 That'll do. Giants, D-backs. I mean, I guess we should talk. just debacks for a moment. This series doesn't get me juiced up. I guess the Lars Newt Bar pinch it Grand Slam should because he had a couple good games in here. God. Yeah. Oh yeah. We're in the drink. That's a zero zero game. Tugboat Wilkinson was shoving for San Francisco. Dude, they've just had a season from hell. I hope next year they get off to a fun start because if they don't, it could get dark early.
Starting point is 00:53:45 But man, I don't know. The snake, I guess we started here, and that's why I'm getting a little choppy. The snakes are in the dance. Snakes are in the dance. Nice start from Merrill Kelly. Seven-ins pitch, no earned runs. He threw 100 pitches, which is nice. Recorded a 1,000 career strikeout.
Starting point is 00:54:02 I like Merrill Kelly. Oh, I was good. I enjoyed watching him pitch. That was a nice swing. But my guy, Lars Neubar, I kind of forgot that he was on the snakes, to be honest with you. he came into that third game hitting 170 first 53 at Bats and then he's gone six for 12
Starting point is 00:54:20 a couple homers so that's a nice little go for them and yeah now they're in the dance and I agree with you Toro Lavello with everything they've kind of had to go through there's such a weird fun team to watch streaky can play really sloppy baseball at times but also then you watch them and they can look like
Starting point is 00:54:38 a really formidable power team just depends on what night you catch them on And Corbyn Carroll, one homer shy, becoming the first player with two seasons of 20 homers, 20 steals, 15 triples. Serial. And, you know, Dalton keeps telling me this. You watch the snakes a lot. He's like, don't sleep on the bullpen. The bullpen has been kind of not like namey guys, but they've been really getting it done.
Starting point is 00:55:11 Carrillo, the wise guy, Garcia, Santana, Murillo, in that. second game, all went one inning. They threw five, no runs, one hit, seven Ks, like, big time. Rob, can you show Michael Harris, too, on second base doing the brave celebration? Because that's, I'll tell you what, it looks like the opposite of how I got out of bed this morning. It was old. I did something to my rib.
Starting point is 00:55:35 That's a new one. I don't know. I know Rockies are constantly in the bad place. These games were closed. Col Carrick flips the bird. I don't know if anyone wants to talk about that. I don't know. Michael Harris, too.
Starting point is 00:55:52 Glad he had the season, having the season he's had. And the Braves, winners of seven in a row, they're tied with the Dodgers for that final, the two seat in the NL, which that's going to be a buy or a three-game wild card set. Ooh, I didn't even, I'm going right now. Hold on one sec. see who has the tiebreaker.
Starting point is 00:56:14 Do we have that list of? I'm going to get it. Sure don't. I'm going right now. They have played the Dodgers this year. They just swept them. Yeah, I want to see what happened the rest of the year, though. Can I find it? Okay. I got it. Here you go. Against the Dodgers,
Starting point is 00:56:31 five and one. So they are... So that's it. So if they tie the Dodgers, the Dodgers would be in the Wild Card Series. Right now it would be against the Diamondback. I know some people probably want Padres and you wonder if the Phillies or the Cubs leak down there could become very interesting.
Starting point is 00:56:49 Very interesting. Wow, Dodgers's having to go back to the freaking wild card. There he is. I mean, just picture you're the middle infielder. Your team just gave up the lead and Michael Harris is just doing jumping jacks in front of you. We did this with Freddie Freeman last year when he was just like swinging his hips around.
Starting point is 00:57:11 and it's like, what are you going to do? It's Freddie Freaking Freeman. He's literally Freddie Freeman. This episode is sponsored by Seatgeek, covering baseball every day, means it's go time. MLB playoffs are around the corner, and the NFL is here with the NBA not too far behind. Holy smokes.

Starting point is 00:58:01 Have the code added so you can use it later. And thank you to C-Kek. Let's keep it going, Coach. Let's do some standouts. It's time. Stand out for Stand out performances This guy stood out for Trev
Starting point is 00:58:21 Say what Hit him I'm going with my guy Terrick Scoobo goes back to Detroit Six innings pitch One run 7Ks fighting back tears Gets the video board A little bit of mixed
Starting point is 00:58:33 Ovation Which is crazy Detroit Like you love your people there I've seen you chant Jared Gop's name. Oh, wow. But then in the end, I did also see you boo Matthew Stafford, which is crazy.
Starting point is 00:58:47 So I guess that's kind of what happens here. I chose him for a couple of different reasons. First of all, I love Terrick Scoobal. Big body, stud. Looks good in the Dodgers uni. I don't know if that's obvious. He looks good in it. I think he, I think, would you like him in pinstripes?
Starting point is 00:59:06 I think it would be really flattering for him. He looked really tall in that. Flattering for a lot of people. people he could try him for sure he could try him for sure uh another funny story that came out of this and we posted it on our socials was he ended up taking the espresso machine with him when he left detroit and people are banging on him for this hey you're rich man how much you making this year 30 million bucks yeah you're about to make 400 or something whatever the heck it is can't you buy a new espresso machine well his wife told him to take it and let me tell you people what do you
Starting point is 00:59:39 do, Treb. You listen to your wife. You know, the internet, okay, they can bully you. You don't want a mad wife. Happy wife. There's never been a truer statement in the world. Never been a truer statement in the world. Okay. So, Terek, I'm on your side on this one. Maybe send him another one, though. You really like that one? Send him another one. But take that one if your wife said so. Just a reminder, me and Vinny Pasquantino, who I accidentally big-leaked him the first time I met him. I said I wanted an espresso machine earlier this year. And Vinny was like, what are you looking at? And I was like, I don't really know yet.
Starting point is 01:00:17 I'm new to the game. I'm probably not going too big with it. Vinny sends me over a link for a $3,000 espresso machine. I was like, Vin, I'm going to come below that. I'd be honest, I was looking more an espresso. Like $250? Yeah, that might be on the high end. Yeah, scoble's awesome, and that Dodgers, again, Trev, they might just laugh at this whole thing.
Starting point is 01:00:42 Because we know their mentality, like, you know, all that, are the Dodgers too good? Like, in their clubhouse, they don't give a damn. That, yeah, even if they end up in the wild card, think about every person who's going to touch the baseball for them. It's a really daunting task. Cooble, not Cooble. that's my guy Jason Cooble Yeah Pop pop
Starting point is 01:01:05 Good short compact swing Oh Never was a great defender Decent arm Scoobel said I sent over Some stuff this morning Including some donuts Okay
Starting point is 01:01:16 Nice start And there was some stuff That I had coming in For a couple guys that play golf So he's taken care of these pieces I love that Great one Trev there's a few things we like
Starting point is 01:01:29 on this show We've always liked the young studs We've always liked the sugar daddies And the olds And we're sitting here hurting I just canceled We were supposed to record something at 3 And I was like my body, it hurts to sit
Starting point is 01:01:46 I'm 36 years old Your body's hurting You played some floor ball this weekend You took a flight My body's not hurting Your body's hurting Max Scherzor Mad Max Scherzer.
Starting point is 01:02:03 He went out on Sunday. And by the way, he's been horrible. That's not a word. That's not a word I throw around a lot on this show because I obviously respect baseball players and anyone that plays Major League Baseball. Max Scherzer had a 702 ERA going into Sunday. I think he would tell you that's not his expectation.
Starting point is 01:02:27 He's 42, coach. Yeah, he's older than me. I don't know if that makes you feel good or bad. And he went out against the Seattle Mariners, so I know it hasn't been the year they wanted. Seven innings pitch, one hit, one walk, 10Ks. And Trev, I'm watching, I'm catching up on the start. And I look at the box score and I'm like,
Starting point is 01:02:48 you got to be kidding me. Like, what is this? And then I watched the stuff. Max had the juice coach. The pitches were nice. The cutter, the high. fastball, that signature curveball. Max was dealing.
Starting point is 01:03:03 If you're the Mariners, who you're about to get swept and you're watching 42-year-old Max Schurzer just shove it down on you, drag it all over the mound. That's got to be a tough feeling. He passed Gaylord Perry for ninth all-time in strikeouts. That's insane. The oldest pitcher with 10 strikeouts and 1 or 0 hits allowed in a game since Nolan Ryan. Scherzer and Ryan are the only guys on any of these fucking lists. People don't do this.
Starting point is 01:03:35 Mad Max, he's a monster. He's got me like rooting for Toronto, which the way they crushed the Yanks last year, I shouldn't be doing that. He's awesome, man. He's literally Max Scherzer in the year, 2026 doing this. That's silly.
Starting point is 01:03:52 First win since March 31st. That was his first start of the year. and that, I mean, look, if you're going to die, I think it's fine to the final blow to come from Max Scherzer, Hall of Famer, if you're the Mariners. Oh, okay. I like that. Take some solace so that you got beat by one of the greats. Sir, who's our banister?
Starting point is 01:04:15 Who's the old warrior I didn't respect enough? Barrett can sell me? Yes, that's kind of what happened. Is that, that I say that right? Barreston Selmy. None of us know. Yeah. The only pitchers
Starting point is 01:04:26 ahead of Max Scherzer Justin Verlander who a couple good Scherzer starts we might get there. Don Sutton, Tom Seaver, your guy, Bert Blyleaven, Steve Carlton, Roger, dude, Bert Blyleaven
Starting point is 01:04:41 being good at. We were looking at Burt Blyleaven stats on Friday night when we went out. Me and Jimmy were sitting there. He threw 325, he made 40 starts, like 26 complete games, like 10 shutters. outs. So men were men.
Starting point is 01:04:56 Can I tell you, Steve Carlton doesn't get enough love for me. There's a lot of guys that don't. I guess that's true. You know, it's really funny. So, you know, the tigers, speaking of Verlander, go to the twins this weekend. And so we're doing a video tribute to Justin Verlander, you know, saying goodbye. And they asked me to send a video. What?
Starting point is 01:05:18 Yes. That's awesome. And it's like they got all the people that faced him a bunch. Have you filmed it yet? I already filmed it. I think you should have... Do you what I said? I'll tell you what I said.
Starting point is 01:05:31 My knee-jerk reaction was you filming it from like a horrible camera angle, like doing one of those. It was in, I filmed it in Sacramento. I was like going to the field. Like I was in my hotel room. I just said like, hey,
Starting point is 01:05:43 like, you know, uh, congratulations in a great career. It's like really fun to like go to battle against you. And I was like, although I don't think you really consider it. a battle you consider it more of an out and I said but welcome to the dark side come get some on
Starting point is 01:05:59 the tennis court you know where to find me wow yeah I challenge yeah love that show it's my this is my domain now just in verlander he's like dude you think I'm gonna play tennis with you maybe you never know you never know people think I'm cool sometimes you a shirt I'm number nine uh Trev this could have got will Warren in a big game Yeah, I needed it. Jared Young, Joe Adel is popping up a lot. Price Eldridge. Say Leota Tiberis' name.
Starting point is 01:06:32 I'll say Liotto Tavares' game. Always liked his game. Solid. Ronald O'Cuna Jr. Jake Bennett's going to shove it up. You know what? They're in the playoffs because that's what he does against the Yankees. I'm hoping a lot of these guys are running Fuego.
Starting point is 01:06:45 Dirt Nasty's on Fuego. That means I'm on fire, baby. Like Waco. Hit it. I think we've mentioned quite a few of these guys. Lars Nupar of Arizona. It goes six for 12. Two doubles, two homer six runs driven in.
Starting point is 01:07:00 Kazuma Akamoto up there. And Toronto, three for eight, but two of those are homers. He's got 78 runs driven in. That's tied for the second most by a rookie in franchise history. Love that for him. Sounds like a good sign to me. Michael Harris does five for 11. Two doubles a homer, five runs driven in.
Starting point is 01:07:17 Andrew Benintendi, five for 12. Two doubles of Homer, four runs driven in against my twins. In 47 games at Target Field, I actually knew this stack because I've said it before. He rakes, one dotting, 14 homers and 40 runs driven in. So let's just stay away from him. Bryce Eldridge, you like to see that for Giants fans. You get to have a little something nice. He goes seven for 16 in the series, two doubles a homer.
Starting point is 01:07:44 He also drove in seven runs. So you like that. I talked about Lawrence Butler and what he's been doing. Great to see him on this list for the week. for 20 two doubles a homer seven runs driven in he had a homer against the twins opo and he just acted the fool around the bases like I know yeah good way mean nothing a good way it was a bomb like some of those homers get cheap out there not this one
Starting point is 01:08:09 he said safely in 13 of his last 14 games 396 with a 1.1 OPS 11 runs driven in in that stretch George Springer a welcome site for Blue Jays fans he of a 935 OPS last year he's shown up at the right time 10 for 19 3 doubles two homers four runs driven in stolen base to boot during the week Hector Rodriguez what do you know about him 7 for 20
Starting point is 01:08:35 three of those hits Jake homers six runs driven in for the Reds another one will skip in this one oh it will sell Stewart talking about him later Jose Ramirez talk about a sight for sore eyes the guardians need him to go they've been getting their offense from other people, but they know if they want to actually make a splash, make the dance, do something in it.
Starting point is 01:08:57 That Jose Ramirez is going to have to get going. Nine for 25, four doubles, a homer. He hadn't had a, like, an extra base hit in a long time. Got five of them over the last week. Nine runs driven in. It was his first homer since June 16th. First home on our Progressive Field since May 17th. Remember, he spent five weeks on the IL mid-June, late July with the hamate fracture. It looks like that is finally not bothering him anymore. And that, my friends, is R. who is in Fuego? Something like that.
Starting point is 01:09:30 Nobody better. Nobody better, I think. That's in Fuego. That's kind of the last positive thing. Oh, this is awesome. Mm-hmm. Mm-hmm. Mm-hmm.
Starting point is 01:09:43 You didn't know this? No slump watch. No. Oh, people, we have fantastic news. I know a lot of you don't live in our warehouse world And again, I recommend you check it out It really, it's a lot of fun content Chris Rose in the booth
Starting point is 01:10:00 And it's like so well produced It's like genuinely better than most TV broadcasts Concrete Cricket starts this week And Concrete Cricket starts this week Dahl who puts the sheet together for us He participates the whole time That he's like, I don't think I can put the sheet together We tapped in the Mighty Quinn, aka Wally Pip.
Starting point is 01:10:21 He did a fantastic job. There is no slump watch. There are no injuries, so they don't exist. And you know what? That's fine by me for an episode. Get me to a warts. Coach. I feel like you might be lean in sales to it.
Starting point is 01:10:39 Yeah, I've said it like five times. So last night I mentioned on the flight, I watched a league of the row. Which, by the way, it's just so damn good. Doddy Henson like hot like into it yes yes
Starting point is 01:10:55 yes thank you thank you for admitting that I feel like she doesn't get that laid upon her like they call her pretty in the movie I feel like Gina Davis during that time got some love okay well she deserves it
Starting point is 01:11:08 loved it a phenomenal movie John Lovitz is so good as a scout early on goes in and whatever One of my favorite scenes, though, is when he goes in, they're in Colorado, they go into the gymnasium, and there's a lefty on the mound inside, and all you see is, well, there's a lady. She's hitting rockets from the right side. Dad's talking her up. And then he goes, all right, Marla, let's go from the left side. And all the baseball players go, ugh. And she just starts raking and raking and everything's good. They're so impressed. John Lovett. sees her, his face when he sees her is really funny. He's looking for pretty girls. You know,
Starting point is 01:11:53 dad raised her as a boy. Mom wasn't around. Please don't make my daughter suffer for my, you know, sins of the past, I think is what he says, or something like that. But Marla Hooch, oh, what a hitter. That's what they say about her. And she is, and she rake. She plays second base for the Rockford Peaches. And she just, her job is to rake. That's what she, she does. So I have a couple comparisons with Marla Hooch and South Stewart. Because I think you could say, South Stewart, what a hitter. I think you could say that about it. A thousand percent. Right? Yeah. Another thing that happens is Marla Hooch leaves early. She gets married to Nelson. Doesn't end up playing the playoffs. Sal Stewart probably not going to end up playing the playoffs this year.
Starting point is 01:12:45 That was mean. That was mean. That was mean. I'm trying to shine a good light on Sal Stewart because I think he is going to win rookie the year. You can talk about T.J. Roundfield if you want Rocky's fans. But what this guy has done this year is remarkable. He has 31 jacks on the year. He has a 105 runs driven in. He's stolen 12 bases. He's got an OPS plus of 127. Look, I know he plays in a hitter's yard. I don't, I honestly don't think it matters. I think this guy is an absolute stud. And there are some numbers to back that up, Jake.
Starting point is 01:13:27 If you go on his home splits, it's 257, 347-442 for the 829. Pretty good, right? Sure. His away splits, 329, 495 for an 823. So don't tell me this guy can only hit in Cincinnati. This guy rakes, okay? A couple other things I wanted to shout out.
Starting point is 01:13:48 people talk about you know what do RBIs really they really matter is it just like hey you get in more opportunities and he's just a good hitter well yeah kind of
Starting point is 01:13:58 but how about with runners in scoring position you want a guy that hits hits for average I think is really important in those situations 319 3802 616 for the 998
Starting point is 01:14:10 there's Marla Hooj there's John Lovitz probably more John Lovitz in my game than I'd like to admit right now but a little bit 990 998 OPS with runners in scoring position.
Starting point is 01:14:20 Cool. What about with two outs in runners in scoring position, Jake? What do you think? I bet he hits. 305, 397, 509 for the 906. That is what I think that is one of the most important stats. And I get it. Like, I don't know.
Starting point is 01:14:37 A good hitter is a good hitter. That's basically what like the analytics community will say to you. It's like, well, he's just a good hitter. Doesn't mean he's clutch. He's just a good hitter. I don't know. Like, I think there's something. there. This is the stat. You watch baseball games. You watch guys get two out RBIs. What does it do
Starting point is 01:14:54 to the other team? What does it do to momentum? Everything, right? Yeah. You start getting two out knocks and you're like, oh my gosh, I felt it on the field. You're that close to getting out of an inning. One good pitch. Let's make it. Let's make a play. And all of a sudden, you got a guy up there and he just gets the job done. It hurts. Sal Stewart's been doing it all year long. It's not because he plays in Cincinnati. He's been doing it on the road as well. This guy deserves a ton of love. I do believe he is going to win, um, rookie of the year. And where is he from? Miami, Florida. Trev, that's where you mentioned he was hitting 305, two outs, runners and scoring position. Come on, coach. I missed it. Come on. Go South Stewart go, man. I don't
Starting point is 01:15:43 know. Big fan. I love the approach. I, I, I, I, wonder, I was going to do my award and call it awards and talk some war stuff because he's, he's the clear favorite for rookie of the year, but like Weatherholt's got a much bigger war going. Nolan McLean is putting together a full rookie season. I don't know. I'm wondering if it gets now on the I. I'm interested to see, you know, if the war people are going to start getting loud. I don't think so.
Starting point is 01:16:12 I think Stewart just keeps hitting and is going to end up in a nice spot. But, you know, it also kind of similar to Shohei and PCA. Like, is PCA's war going to be that much higher than Shohei and the whole hitting versus pitching thing that I'm just interested to see where the combo goes. It's minus 600 right now for Sal, plus 500 for McLean and JJ is now plus 2,500. Yeah. I'm glad you enjoyed that movie. It's my favorite baseball movie.
Starting point is 01:16:45 Okay, so there was no risk for you. There wasn't like I haven't watched this in eight years. Is it going to age? Okay, good. And I do think, here, Doddy, of course, dropped the ball on purpose. It's not even a question. She's Doddy Henson.
Starting point is 01:17:01 She's Doddy Henson. They showed a plate earlier in the year when someone tried to run her over. She didn't drop that one. Bob's home. She's over it. She wants Kit to be happy. Kid sister. Family.
Starting point is 01:17:15 Family. Um, okay. Uh, my award, because I mentioned I was going to do some award stuff. Um, I'm going to do a little, I'm going to do a lefty masher combo. Um,
Starting point is 01:17:31 I mentioned Kobe Mayo on the way through. Uh, what, the first time I saw Kobe Mayo, I was kind of like, what's going on here? Uh, we got a big boy.
Starting point is 01:17:43 Uh, don't know if he can play third base. don't know if he can play first base. He was new to the league. I was like, let's see some Kobe Mayo. And hey, to stick around the league, you got to, you know, what's your skill? Do you play defense? Do you hit homers?
Starting point is 01:17:57 Like, what do you do here? Well, he's found his thing. And listening to some of these Orioles broadcasts, when he comes up versus a lefty, because like Kobe Mayo versus Ritees right now, it's tough, coach. 156 of 491 OPS. That would make you one of the worst hitters in the league. and that's tough. And there's a good amount of at-bats there.
Starting point is 01:18:19 Well, guess what? When the South Paw is on the mound, Kobe Mayo 325-382-0-1.148 OPS, the broadcast is having a blast. Like when Kobe Mayo is up and there's a lefty on the mound, they're just predicting homers, and they're getting it. And on 2-0, Kobe clobbers one to left. He's done it again.
Starting point is 01:18:43 he's absolutely inevitable Kobe Mayo destroys another left-hander he takes a Jeffrey Springs change-up out to left a lot of So So a lot of teams have their So a lot of teams have their their platoon guy or guys
Starting point is 01:19:09 I think it's becoming more spread out through Major League Baseball Even my Yankees, you know, you think of a great Yankee team. You normally think of a lineup 1 through 9, play them every day and figure it out. Yankees got three platoon guys on their bench right now. And when playoff matchup season comes, that's going to be very interesting. I don't know if my birds are going to keep going, but I know if Kobe Mayo's versus lefty in October, that's going to be pretty nice to have.
Starting point is 01:19:34 And the other guy that I originally want to shout out with this, a guy who played 10 games this month, and how many of them were starts? 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7. 7 starts. He's a guy that I love to highlight when we can, and we didn't talk about this series a lot because his team ended up doing what we expected.
Starting point is 01:19:58 Edmundo Sosa. That's what he's been doing on the Phillies for years. This month, he was having a tough year, coach. He came into the month, 208, 243, 579. Yipes. We didn't talk about that series at all. No, it was the best Western Road Warrior series. So, you know, we tried to highlight it the best we could.
Starting point is 01:20:19 Edmuno Sosa hits the game-saving Grand Slam after Wade Meckler robs a homer that would have gave them the lead. And then he plays the next day, verse lefty. He hits another home run. This month, in his 10 games, 423 batting average of 483 on base of 1.329 OPS. And in those 10 games, the Phillies are not. and one. The one loss is an extra inning, 11 inning loss. Whoever the Phillies are playing come October, if there's a lefty out there, how much more important this guy becomes is crazy. It's crazy. So I want to highlight a couple lefty
Starting point is 01:20:59 matchers. I love that. I love that. I love watching Kobe Mayo when he connects. Big boy. It's all far. I like the swing. I do. And Mindus else has been important to the Phillies for quite some time. A lot of their fans clamor for more playing time for him, but you're right. He's found his calling lefty masher,
Starting point is 01:21:15 got to love that. You mentioned Orioles broadcasters. Ben McDonald, one of my favorite voices in the sport. I just went on his baseball reference page. It's nice. Oh.
Starting point is 01:21:25 Yeah. Oh, he's like... He was in Baltimore for seven years as a starting pitcher and then went to Milwaukee for a couple. In 1996,
Starting point is 01:21:36 had a five-four War, 35 starts. He pitched 221 innings. Not a big strikeout guy. Then after 1997, his career was over. Must be injury? I would guess so. I haven't gotten that far into my deep dive because he was only 29,
Starting point is 01:21:57 but I do really enjoy watching or listening to Ben McDonald, and I guess watching him. He's on the TV. Olympics and college USA team as well. first rounder. I'd like to think we could... Me and Ben McDonald would chop it up. Right. I think there's a breaking of bread needs to happen with BMAC.
Starting point is 01:22:19 Because, I mean, he might be the healer of mine and Gary Thorne's relationship, possibly. Someone has to. Ben, listen, you and I, we're going to go put some golf. Bluefuss die a night. And then you're going to take me hunting. Oh. Yeah. And then I don't know what I'll show you as my skill, but we'll figure it.
Starting point is 01:22:38 it out. Yo, Ben McDonough, Pat and Rouge, Louisiana guy? Yeah, we need to, we need to do that. And yeah, you guys all know your players on your team or even your players on the opposing team that, you know, even for Sosa, who didn't have a good start to the season, we're starting to play the ball games that matter. Like if Edmundo brings it down the stretch for these final two months, and then he's out there against, I don't know, Snell, Boyd, I'managa, whoever it is. those guys just matter so much. I asked Derek Shelton this about, you know, we asked a generic question, like, is it a sprint now?
Starting point is 01:23:16 Like, do you consider now a sprint? And he said, yeah, absolutely. And I said, well, how do you manage what changes for you during a sprint? Right. It is the time of year. And I'm just going to paraphrase this and kind of talk about overall managing. It is, ain't no hurt feelings anymore. Like, you're playing the guys who were hot.
Starting point is 01:23:38 and you are getting ready to go on this playoff run or, you know, get into the playoffs. But it is, it's time for the guys to play. And the off days are going to be few and far between, especially for these wild card teams that are contending. This is buckle up people. Like,
