Starting point is 00:02:19 The young boys dapping us up. You know, a lot of the people working at the establishment, who are those guys? My face about to pop on the TV with Best of Talking Yanks, and then they put on the Mets game, but I don't know. Like, we just have the juice, right now. It's baseball season.

Starting point is 00:02:38 It's baseball season. And you and I together roaming around, it's, it can be a great thing or it could go completely opposite. But I think New York's the perfect place for us. Like I said, New York or Hollywood, we got it. We could be like the Wahlberg brothers. Yes.

Starting point is 00:02:59 Yeah. I like that. You'd be Mark Wahlberg. I'd be, was it Donnie's kind of the, or who's the other guys that came out? out here. Matt Damon and Ben Affleck. Ooh, we've got some Damon and Affleck. Yeah, I think so.

Starting point is 00:03:13 I think we could do that. You being that broken picture of Affleck with the cigarette out of his mouth on him. Like, for some reason I aspire to have that feeling. I really have never down that. You don't have that feeling. I don't have that one. I kind of want it. It's more of a story.

In a joking way, we did, we talked a little, I had a couple mountain doze last night. Okay. The, I did, I just, I told you I had a New York City experience. Jess was out. She went to like a sound bowl head clearing thing.

Starting point is 00:03:55 Oh, cool. And I was like, Olivia's done that too. She says, it's great. I'm, I have that side to me, but I just wasn't in it. Like, it's dog days right now. Okay. Don't put me in a room for an hour with some bowls and my thoughts. So I was on my own for dinner.

Starting point is 00:04:11 So I had a couple mountain dues at a local establishment. And then, and dude, there's just, it's like a kind of a hipster spot. And dude, it was just perfect New York City. These hipsters drinking like heavy beers with the DNC on their phone. And it was just like, man, I'm next to them and I had my phone out with the warehouse games on. So yeah. And speaking of Mountain Dew, priorities. Why don't you go out and get yourself a do? Man, you guys know they're Mountain Dew.

Starting point is 00:04:48 What you don't know is, you know, you've probably done some gaming. Or you need a little energy boost, get your due on. You know, toss the, Treve, I know we said it's baseball season, but one of our favorite activities, tossing the pig skin around for a second. Oh, she's talking about. tarps off mountain dew pigskin or maybe it's the oh maybe it's maybe it's the leather any leather fishing whatever you're into uh blitzball bb five coming up uh the mountain is calling go grab a couple mountain dues click the link in the description uh trev it's friday which means

Starting point is 00:05:29 it's the national league in my goodness um some things happening out east and out west. It was meaty. And you said you said you have some brewers like inside info or something. No, I've just been scouring the statistics. I just have one. The brewer, everything's been going right for the brewers, even though it's been going wrong for them, if you know what I mean. Okay. So this is just a little jab, a little, it's just a little knife in there. I watched Lord of the Rings yesterday with Isla, by the way. So watch out.

Starting point is 00:06:03 Oh, wow. Let's get into that with the NL recap. We start in Atlanta where the players play in the Braves. They took two out of three from the Phillies. I can't wait to get Trevor Plu's standings update at the end of this. The Braves took the bread games. Oh, Reinaldo Lopez is back, punching out 10 in five innings, out pitching Zach Wheeler.

Starting point is 00:06:31 You boy, Max Fried went seven innings for the first time in a while. that was the game the Phillies won. Two, three, two games to wrap it up. The Braves taking that last one. Spencer Schwellenbach. Really coming into his own, man. 6.2, 9 punches of his own. The Braves are just thrown out a leftovers team.

Starting point is 00:06:52 I mean, we've got Gio Orchella Whitmerfield out there. It's kind of nuts what they're putting together out there and winning games. Meanwhile, the Phillies have an awful record. since July 1st. This baseball season, Will Creed, arms wide open, except for the Seattle Mariners.

Starting point is 00:07:14 They get swept by the Dodgers. Scott Service out finds out from a Kenny R. Tweet. That's tough, bro. Don't like that. I'll tell you what the Dodgers like. Max Muncie just slanging that thing all over the field.

Starting point is 00:09:32 with the walk-off Grand Salami. That game was back and forth. Oh, my God. Again, Jose Anglesias. And then they shut piece him on that last days. Mile Michaelis to the Penn. Victor Scott with a three-hit day. How about the Cardinals showing a little bit of fight?

Starting point is 00:10:28 Here's a six RBI game from him. I don't even know. Corbin Carroll is back in a big way. Lord is Gurriel with a couple hits. And then that White Sox, Giants series, everyone's talking about. Giants take two out of three. Nats take two out of three from the rock pile. Giants, I want to get into you, but they have a hard record coming up.

Starting point is 00:10:48 People forget about that. That is what happened in the National League. Trevor Goof, you've got the standings. You were seated and ready to go. What do you got? I do have them. And because it's Friday, we're in the National League. I'm going to start out west.

Starting point is 00:11:07 Where the Dodgers have the best record in baseball, at 76 and 52 of their sweeping the Mariners. Interesting. Arizona, four games back, and the Padres, four and a half games back. Arizona is 72 and 56. The Padres 72 and 57. I have a bet with Chris Rose. I believe it's on September 15th.

Starting point is 00:11:28 Could be September 20th, one of those two dates. If the two teams, the Padres in Arizona, are four games or more behind the Dodgers. Chris Rose has to do the show shirtless. No, why does he keep doing that? I'm not sure if people want that or not. No. I don't know. It's kind of up to the Padres to the Diamondbacks.

Starting point is 00:11:49 What? San Francisco Giants one game over 500, 65 and 64, and the Rockies 47 and 81. Jeez. We'll go to the Central, the brew crew, 73 and 54. 10 games ahead of the Cardinals were 63. This is how we expected the NL Central to go. Besides the Brewers being 10 games up, the rest of them are just all jumbled up.

Starting point is 00:12:13 This is how we thought it was going to be. It's just the Brewers for maybe a certain reason. And now that I'm looking at the standings, I understand the stat that I thought. We'll talk about it. The Cardinals, 63 and 64, Cub, 63 and 65, Cincinnati's 62 and 66, and then the Pirates 60 and 67.

Starting point is 00:12:32 out east Philadelphia still with a six game lead even though they've been struggle struggle bussing for a while 74 and 53 six games above the Atlanta Braves who are 68 and 59 the Mets six games over 500 at 67 and 61 and then it's Washington 58 and 70 and the Miami Marlins 46 and 81 in the wild card Jake right now the diamondbacks have the top spot. They're a half game above the San Diego Padres or the second spot. And then the Atlanta Braves holding on to the third spot of the wild card with really only the Mets showing some life. They're one and a half games back. Giants are four games back. And then it's the whole NL Central crew five, five and a half, six and a half games back of the wild card. And those are

Starting point is 00:13:21 your National League standing spot. Really well done, Trevor. Really well done. We've been hitting the like the wild card and all those things so wrong. Like every time we say this is going to be the matchup, we mess up. Yes. Yeah. So right now the playoff matchups would be, I believe it would be the Dodgers and Phillies would have the buy. And then Milwaukee would be hosting Atlanta for three and Arizona would be hosting the Padres for three. That's how it goes, right?

Starting point is 00:13:56 I think so. I had been screwing it up too, that I'm. It's the third division winner. Right. Plays the last wildcard. So Milwaukee would host Atlanta for three ads of right now, and then Arizona would host the Padres for three. Okay.

Starting point is 00:14:13 Kind of awesome series if we're being on. Yeah, that's where we were at last time in the NL, because it's the Hank Aaron Bowl, Milwaukee and Atlanta. And then, yeah, I mean, Padre snakes, my God. Two of the best teams in baseball for a while now. We might have to get the stimulator ready for the end of this episode. It might be stimulator day. Oh my gosh.

Starting point is 00:14:35 Yes, I need that. It might be. Before we get to that stimulation, Trev, let's start out east with the Phillies and the Braves. Man, I didn't realize, like, the Phillies had a skid, and I was like, okay, and kind of every team was doing theirs, like the Yankees had a skid. The Dodgers had a downpoint there.

Starting point is 00:14:59 I didn't realize how deep we are into this now that the Braves take two out of three from them. What was the stat I saw? I think they're 19 and 24 since July 1st. Like this is now, we're close to two months, 19 and 24 since July 1st, 13 and 21 since July 22nd. Rice Harper has been in now a full-blown like second half. slump. And I don't know. Atlanta's six games out. That's a big number with a little over a month to go. If that number starts getting a little tighter, a brave season that has felt just off. And I talked to Foolish Bailey a little bit on Wake and Jake about the Braves. And I think they've

Starting point is 00:15:49 lost the most war via injury. Who? Yeah, your boy. You don't know if you love them or you hate them. And obviously it makes sense. Acuna Strider, your MVP, Sy Young favorite, and a couple other bodies. I don't know, the Braves feel like they haven't been in the sweet spot for a while, and yet they might, they're not dead for the division. They're so interesting. It feels like baseball is so silly that it feels like the collection of players they have on there

Starting point is 00:16:25 is going to make them have a run. Like I'm watching these games and you got Ramon Luriano catching a ball to end the game. You know, Kelnick, you know, he's been a brave, but he feels kind of strange out there out on left field. Giorchella turning double plays with Whitmerryfield. Like it's a collection of kind of outcasts right now for being on. It's Kellanick included in that. Wouldn't it be perfect for them to use these guys to make a run and try to get it Philly for the division? We thought that was kind of impossible.

Starting point is 00:16:55 I mean six games still doesn't seem likely. It also seems to me I'm like, okay, the Phillies are going to snap out of this at any moment. Like people who are like, you could say what you want about them being 12 and 18 in our last 30. I understand that. But if it was 12 and 18 in May or something, what would you be saying? It's part of the season. It's the same thing now. It's still part of the season.

Starting point is 00:17:20 This team is going to be very good. What's that look for? Trev, you know I'm a schedule guy. It's unfortunately where I've been drinking some giants Kool-Aid recently because they're the only team on paper that I was like, maybe they can shock the rest of this season. The NL Central teams are in there, but I'm so broken by them.

Starting point is 00:17:40 Anyways, in baseball, you're in the skid until you're out of the skid. You know what I'm saying? I know that's kind of dumb, basic Jake talk, but... And you're right. I mean, they're the MF and Phillies, dude. Like, they're... Power is power. Don't get away from that.

Starting point is 00:17:58 Power's power. Power's power. At Kansas City. We'll get to our Royals, but they're playing ball. Yes. Let's see what that looks like. Houston. Okay.

Starting point is 00:18:14 We know where they're at, although the socks gave them a little work this weekend. And then it's four with Atlanta. So, dude, I get that. that they are the Phillies, and it's going to click, and Bryce Harper's not going to be a 630 OPS, dude. But could they lose in Kansas City this weekend? Absolutely.

Starting point is 00:18:33 Could you lose to Houston the next series? Absolutely. And then four with the Braves. Where are we going to be at in 10 days, Phillies? Because if it doesn't click now, Atlanta could be what? Three games out in 10 days? I had to guess what's going to happen in this next 10 games,

Starting point is 00:18:54 Five and five. Okay, mark that down, BPD. And then you climb out of it and then they go. I'm going to go four and six. I love the talk. Listen, I love the talk. I sound like I need the Phillies to go on some magical run into the playoffs. I want this to be dramatic. I want that.

Starting point is 00:19:11 I just watched a lot of ball in my life. I've seen this roster. There's going to be a time before the season is over where the Phillies get hot. That's like, that's just easy thinking right there. I mean let's just shout out Atlanta a little bit for doing it. Beaves, I told you to have a video ready for me. This Marcello, Zuna, Homer off Zach Wheeler was like, off of Zach Wheeler was right at my wheelhouse.

Starting point is 00:19:39 Oh, okay. 110 off the bat, 9.5, I rounded up. 27-degree launch angle is my favorite launch angle. That thing was like 430 feet. Show that again. Can you go back and just watch where this ball ends up? Oh. Watch for this ball ends up.

Starting point is 00:19:54 This is a big boy Homer. Marcel the Bear. You can't really see it. It's like on top of that wall that is in center field there. And what a shot right there. That's nice. What is that? Where do you get that shot?

Starting point is 00:20:08 Is that a drone? That a blimp? It's going on in Atlanta. I didn't know that all like the B-roll, like aerial footage was just like stock footage. Right. But that was live. Like, that was live. Okay.

Starting point is 00:20:26 I'm in. I'm totally in. The Atlanta Braves. I mean, you know, we, we talked about the second life guys. Gio, Whitmerfield, Luriano. What Ozuna has done all year is incredible. Michael Harris is back. Dude, maybe the biggest thing.

Starting point is 00:20:41 And we talk about wind streaks a lot. And one of the main things that gets that going is a consistent effort from the rotation. Spencer Schwellenbach. stepping up for them. Reinaldo Lopez back. Dude, right now they're rotation. Chris Sale, Charlie Morton, Reinaldo, Lopez, Max, Freed, Spencer Schellenbach.

Starting point is 00:21:01 Mm-hmm. Like, yo, if you're going to get that effort every day on the mound, and now you've got these second life guys, and you're smelling blood in the water. And I know you don't want me to keep spoiling it, but what Rysel Iglesias is doing right now, that's a recipe. Okay.

Starting point is 00:21:20 I'm telling you. I'm in. Your Phillies, let's say they do that, that five and five, you just mentioned. And the Braves do an eight and two, which gets a little tricky because they're playing the Phillies in that. Yeah, that's down to like a three-game lead. A lot of math today. Anything else on this series or either of these teams? I don't know.

Starting point is 00:21:46 People were saying Orlando R.C. I didn't stare down by a Starper. It looked like he did stare down by a Sarper. It's a non-story. That's what everyone's telling. me, it's fine. Okay. I'm a little over it.

Starting point is 00:21:56 I'm over it too. Trev, unfortunately, I think our Dodgers fans might be a little mad at us because it's one of these cases of they might be too good for their own good. They are winning a lot of ball games. Best record in baseball again. A lot of bodies are back in this series. That that lineup is starting to feel a little different. with Max Muncie in there.

Starting point is 00:22:29 I mean, obviously, Mookie came back. Tommy Edmund, we talked about this a little bit. Probably more of the story is on the other side of the ball where the Mariners drop to, they're at 500 and they fire their manager. Are they at 500 or under 500? 64 and 64.

Starting point is 00:22:51 Sheesh. Yeah, I mean, this is, it's interesting, because number one, and I think I did this on baseball today, I think I'm ready to declare him dead. That's why I did this. That's my, that's my,

Starting point is 00:23:08 they're in a coffin. Okay. Mariners fans like, F that dude, he's got a Pearl Jam shirt on. He's declaring the Mariners dead. What is this? Team OPS is 666. The writing's on the wall, people.

Starting point is 00:23:24 And I don't know if that team OPS is Scott Service's fault. Well, they also fire their, hitting offensive coordinator, whatever. The pitching coach is just walking around like, I'm the fucking man, bro. Samaritan's pitching coach. That's the thing is. Randy Johnson.

Starting point is 00:23:42 Depoto and service were teammates. Depoto pitching, service catching. So DePotto's like, I took care of the, I took care of the pitchers, you know, what's going on with the offense, even though it's my job to bring in bats, I just really haven't been able to do that. Yeah, so Dan Wilson comes.

Starting point is 00:23:59 and not with an interim tag. He's coming in as the manager, which is kind of crazy. And he's been around the organization. He's been part of those. Right. And like the old school nostalgic Mariners teams with O'1 Mariners' catcher.

Starting point is 00:24:16 123 games back there. So I dig that. I dig that. I think that's cool. You know, like that's automatic respect. And these guys know him. He's been around. So there's a familiarity factor.

Starting point is 00:24:28 plus you can say I know what it's like to win and that's cool like dude like right if I walked into a if I all of a sudden became a manager I don't have that card really

Starting point is 00:24:42 I don't have the card like hey man I've been on these winning teams or I've had success in the playoffs people will be like dude what do you know and then I'd have to earn their trust in other ways Jake man smack around a little bit anyways

Starting point is 00:24:55 yeah something needed to happen I believe, Jake, and Mariners fans correct if I'm wrong, they had three hitting somethings, coaches, coordinators, and two of them have been fired. We're up to season. So now they're down to one. And I think it's Tommy Joseph, the catcher.

Starting point is 00:25:17 Your guy? I think it is my guy. Let me look him up. I get names mixed up sometimes. I think so. It's what I've got on here. Like my former, like, Philly. minor league teammate?

Starting point is 00:25:32 Yeah. Okay. Well, something has to happen offensively and it's probably personnel related, I would assume. They're still lead to league in strikeouts. I just mentioned the devilish OPS that they have.

Starting point is 00:25:47 As recently, what is it, in the middle of June, they had a 10-game lead? The falloff is incredible. You got a hit, bro. I called it. What did I say? I said, don't be the Marlins. We saw this with the Marlins.

Starting point is 00:26:09 You got you assemble this staff. Bring in guys. Bring in guys that are Seattle proof. There's something that stadium's tough to hit in. It's hurt a lot of guys. I mean, Jesse Winker, Polanco, I know there's been injuries, but like your DH move was Mitch Garver.

Starting point is 00:26:30 Again, don't want to be shots fired at a lot of these guys. but like... His kind of shots fired. My point is, you have to be a certain level of baller to, I think, be Seattle-proof, and they have the pitchers to go out and get that kind of guy.

Starting point is 00:26:49 I don't know. I don't know. Sorry Seattle. I like, and a lot of the Seattle people that are... No, I don't say sorry to Seattle. We're just talking facts. I'm sorry to the fans, man, because they have something here, but they have nothing.

Starting point is 00:27:02 They have nothing. They miss the dance. last year. Houston goes to the World Series every fucking year. The Rangers won it last year. And this team, since 2001, there's just, there's kind of nothing, dude, that I feel bad. And I know they're fans online, like, they are in it with us right now. Like, they're not necessarily mad at us. Dude, there's just, go look at that baseball reference page and go look at everyone's, like,

Starting point is 00:27:30 walk-to-strikeout ratio. I don't know, man. I don't know what needs to change up there. I guess Mariners fans, you know your team better than us. Joy Votto, go be there hitting coach. No, no, no. Although Seattle would love that cat. It's close to Canada.

Starting point is 00:27:52 It's basically. Vancouver. Anything you want to say about your Dodgers? Muncie went off. No, I'll reiterate what I've been saying. having Gavin Lux going off and now Muncie back. Like that's music to everybody's ears. You talk about that lineup being kind of like top heavy.

Starting point is 00:28:13 It's not top heavy anymore. The pitching is still going to be interesting. Like, you know, they got a bunch of kind of like options. And hopefully they get Glass Now and Yamamoto kind of spinning it by September. It's going to be interesting. I mean, they're going to be in the playoffs. I think the Dodgers, it's really about, well, obviously, continuing to play and they want to buy.

Starting point is 00:28:35 They want to win the division. It's going to be difficult because you've got two really good teams kind of like coming up at you. So they're kind of in this world where they're like, okay, we're going to be in the playoffs. Like we've been doing this with kind of a patchwork roster all year long. We're going to be there. So the main focus is getting healthy. But at the same time, we kind of like got to go.

Starting point is 00:29:00 They're at this point now where two things are true. But they are going. We're trying to work towards that, but we want to also win this division, so we've got to make some decisions. Dude, I'm Gavin Stone. It's been great. Nails, Kershaw's like back.

Starting point is 00:29:16 Jack Flaherty, man. Again, we are too close to the situation to ever really talk about Jack Flaherty probably fairly. A, funny character of a guy. Dude, what he's done this season for a full season now. Dude, awesome for Jack, and he's, I think soon we're going to be talking about Jack Flaherty's basement, which I'm excited about.

Starting point is 00:29:43 I know, I got, I already have a place picked out for him to buy a house in Vegas. It's on a great golf course that I want to play. Ooh. Keep it up, Jack. I like that. 129 innings, 162 punches, a three flat ERA. That's been the most shocking thing to me is he's punching dudes again, which is great. The GMs like that.

Starting point is 00:31:17 get out of the way Hey, I know Mets fans are always going to kind of struggle with like a supportive Yankee fan, but that Jesse Winker walkoff is so Mets. Why? What does that even mean? Dude, he goes insane. He admits to blacking out. He's screaming at his teammates in the dugout.

Starting point is 00:31:40 His first Mets home run hadn't hit one with the boys yet. And then the fact that it ends with a cut shot to the dead. DJ booth with one of the players' songs coming on. It's just so beautifully Mets, and I'm saying this in a good way. And meanwhile, I mean, any Mets thoughts, although they're kind of in a similar boat

Starting point is 00:32:06 and fighting to stay alive in this wildcard chase, Orioles, man, the bullpen questions are getting louder and louder as Sir Anthony gets clipped both times. Yeah, they kind of, I kind of thought maybe we had found something in Sir Anthony. He does have this stuff, but you got to produce the results as well. I think ending my thoughts on, well, ending my thoughts on the Mets.

Starting point is 00:32:29 Go look at what Sean Maniah's done. I saw it against the twins. He looked best I've ever seen him, and he's continued to do that. On Wednesday, 70s pitched, rear and runs, 9Ks. You know, that's quality start, beautiful thing. In both leagues, the Mets are the closest team to a wild card spot. And it's to the Atlanta Braves who we just daydreamed about catching the Phillies, who the Braves haven't been hot, hot.

Starting point is 00:32:57 I think they're 10 and 10 in their last 20. I don't know. The East is going to get funky. I feel it. I feel it in my bones. Baltimore, like the starting pitching is kind of, you know, it's worth, I guess it's pitching in general. You talked about the back end of their bullpen starting pitching.

Starting point is 00:33:14 They end up sending Trevor Rogers down to the minor east. Cole Irvin is back making a start. My guy swerve. It's, uh, they're going to have to piece some stuff together. You know, I don't think it's, at the beginning of the year, we're talking, oh, man, this team is, what's going to stop them? Um, and now you kind of have a,

Starting point is 00:33:34 you have something that can stop you. And it's really kind of been the pitching. It's weird because like, you know, we, we always talk about Albert Suarez, uh, team Kremmer's giving them a, couple performances that, yeah, that bullpen, I mean, Kimbrel gave up the home run to your Mark Vientos in the seventh inning. Man, they've got Houston and the Dodgers coming up. So like, for Baltimore straightened it out, it's going to be interesting.

Starting point is 00:34:07 And yeah, I mean, the Trevor Rogers story, obviously don't close the book, young pitcher that they're banking on the next couple years of him. But that's a tough feeling. Like, that's when that guy. comes over, you're hoping, you know, your pitching coach taps into him and you're going to look up and he's had four great starts. And that just hasn't been the case. I mean, he's got to be back up in September. I'm assuming they're just going to send him down and just say, hey, you need to work on this. Like he might go down to AAA and throw exclusively one pitch or something. You know what I mean?

Starting point is 00:34:40 Just to get a feel back. Like he's got to be back because they need him. Interesting. Interesting. thing. Mets, screw up someone's season. I would love it. Treve, what happened in San Diego this week? It was the Jackson Merrill show. He's just a very, very good baseball player. I'm going to follow him on Instagram right now. I followed him. I got no follow back. It's kind of tough, man. Yeah. Sometimes I get hurt like that. It's okay. No big deal. Michael King looked really good.

Starting point is 00:35:19 The Padres are a very good baseball team. I think that they have the starting pitching to do it. I didn't really get to see. I didn't see Dylan C's, didn't see Musgrove. So, you know, Michael King kind of moving around. I actually asked some of the players on the Twins. I said, how does that feel? Because on the broadcast, he looked absolutely nasty.

Starting point is 00:35:36 What they said is you can kind of see everything out of the hand. Everything kind of looks different out of the hand. He wasn't necessarily tunneling. It didn't really matter. He threw 16 and his pitch two and run. Yeah, I mean, he's, my scout report is like in the the Yankees got to see this live. His pitches are reliever-level pitches.

Starting point is 00:35:54 Like each one, like the fastball, they're everywhere. The slider, the change-up. And so even if you can see them, they have enough movement that Michael King, I want to double check because I think I looked this up yesterday, but in the National League, he was sixth in ERA. It's Sail, Wheeler, Hunter Green, Imanaga, Webb,

Starting point is 00:36:17 Michael King. So, like, that's Soto trade. I mean... Yeah. The second game, Bailey Oberg gives up a homer to... to Mani Machado. Ties the game. Rocco immediately pulls him.

Starting point is 00:36:34 Brings in Griffin Jacks. Griffin Jackson does his job. And then in the eighth inning, he goes to, like, no shots fired. Probably the twins' worst pitcher, Stephen O'Kert, right now. Currently. The bullpen, he just hasn't really... He's gotten left.

Starting point is 00:36:48 these out decently. There was a lefty run. Obviously you're going to pinch hit. He gives up

Starting point is 00:36:52 a bunch of runs. Profar hits a Homer to go ahead. It's, um,

Starting point is 00:36:57 it was like not a great moment. Twins fans were not happy about that. And then the last game, the twins had a huge seven run fourth, I believe it was.

Starting point is 00:37:05 Matt Walner, exclamation point Homer. Um, podgers are good. Their lineup is kind of relentless. Jackson Merrill impressed me. He had a moonshot home run, I believe,

Starting point is 00:37:16 in the last game. they're going to be there, man. Here's what I'll say about the Padres. Their bullpen is filthy. Like, I know we talked about Brewer's bullpen and the... Who am I thinking of? The Guardian's bullpen.

Starting point is 00:37:35 That's one and two. They got to be in the discussion with the moves they made. Every single guy, there's some guy they pitched yesterday. I don't even remember his name. It's my favorite. I know. Sean Reynolds, I think, is it?

Starting point is 00:37:48 his name is. He's just this big fucking, just those absolute cheese. He's like the last guy you think of in their bullpen. He looks like a high leverage reliever. It's like they have six or seven legit high leverage guys. The first game, when they brought in Tanner Scott, who's the other guy they brought in? Jason Adam. Jason Adam. Tanner Scott and then Swares. It was like, he was over. And it was. Jason Adam is a. brutal at Batman. So that's kind of like my take is they they kind of have it all and

Starting point is 00:38:24 they're not going anywhere and they are legit World Series team. A little more Padres coming later. 22 and 8 in their last 30. Yo. Yeah. They are for real. Treb I think we got to get a little tidy. I said it on the way through

Starting point is 00:38:46 a man. The Cardinals were playing with the piss and vinegar of a team who knows that it's now or never. So, I mean, I love that. I obviously love that. I've been hurt by these Cardinals too much the past two years to put on my believing hat from one series where they take two out of three from the crew, especially after losing that first game. But they did, you know, they fought in it. They tried to come back. Matt Carbenter pinch hit home run. And then in that second game, that's a game the Cardinals have lost a lot this year. You know, the Brewers had punched them in the mouth.

Starting point is 00:39:26 The Brewers had a six-game win streak. Here comes Devin Williams, who we've been so hype about. And they got them. And they got them. So, hey, I'm not buying Cardinal stock, but I believe in momentum that they win the final two games of the season. the look in their eye, they sent down Jordan Walker and Nolan Gorman.

Starting point is 00:39:47 So like it's winning time. It's winner go home for them. So I hope they play with that the rest of the way. Can I give you my Brewer stat now? Yes. I forgot. So I was just looking at the standings as, you know, I'm the standings guy here.

Starting point is 00:40:03 And, you know, you look at record against teams above 500 and record against teams below 500. The Brewers have by far the most games played against teams under 500. It makes sense, I guess, because their division is all under 500. But they have played 73 games against teams under 500. No one even comes closer. Even the rest of the teams in their division don't come close to that. The next closest team is like 64.

Starting point is 00:40:31 I'm just throwing that. It's interesting. Okay. We're like, we keep saying, how are the Brewers doing it? How are they doing it? I know the bullpen's good. I know they're athletic. They play defense.

Starting point is 00:40:40 They can score runs. I take the extra pace. Willie Adamas. All these things. That's a reason. 44 and 29. 73. It's a lot.

Starting point is 00:40:52 It's a lot. Yeah. I put that out there. Not taking away anything from the brooker. I love them. No, we love you. I'm so fun. I love you, Milwaukee.

Starting point is 00:41:03 I guess. And I'm not getting excited about any team under 500. That's a new rule of the program this year. And we like that. Oh, one, yeah, me too. But one last thing. Katie Wu, who did baseball today with me on Wednesday, she let me know there's a place in St. Louis where you can be,

Starting point is 00:41:22 it's outside of the stadium, but you can be in a pool watching the game. You're like way up high. Dude, I think I saw that. Let's go. And apparently St. Louis calls it baseball heaven. And she's like, it's not baseball heaven right now. She called it purgatory, which I agreed with. But we got to go to this bar.

Starting point is 00:41:41 Me and you in the pool? I'm in. Okay. That should be a series for us, like coolest places to watch a game outside of the stadium. Done. Jam baseball. Boom. Sell it. Sales team.

Starting point is 00:41:54 Listen. Cubbies, for the same reason I can't be excited about the Cardinals. And you guys were playing with piss and vinegar with your season on the line two. They take two out of three from the Tigers. and what I would say is they are in a soft schedule that Miami, Pittsburgh, and the Nats are coming up. So Cubbies, I said this a week or two ago, if you can give me that 15 and 3 or something,

Starting point is 00:42:22 then we can talk, but I'm obviously not there yet. Okay, agreed. And hey, how about this? For all the teams, and we're hitting the part of the season where there's some series we just can't talk about people. I'm sorry, Rocky's Nats. My Giants, I would have loved to talk about you if you got that sweep with Logan Webb on the mount, but I really can't.

Starting point is 00:42:43 And where I'm going to show that I can be fair to everyone, I mean, this D-back sweep, I'm kind of over it already. Like you guys did your work and you're back to killing it, but that's where we're at. Adrian Castillo, my God. Yeah, what's up with him, bro? Nuts, dude. He joined Jerry Groot and Johnny Bell. bench for six RBI and a stolen base by a rookie catcher.

Starting point is 00:43:10 I think the Giants, look, here's what I'll say about the Giants. You're getting the starting pitching. People are mad at us saying that they have no future. They said this is the best young collection. Huh? One of their fans said that in our defense. Yeah, we kind of were just talking about, like, what can they do looking up at all these teams in the NOS?

Starting point is 00:43:29 And they said, hey, look, this is the best collection of young town we've had in quite some time and Ramos and Fitzgerald and the pitching is there and all these things and all these things and Matt Chapman wants to stay. I would love it. I would love it. I like when San Francisco is good at baseball. 65 and 64. Got to mention you guys a little bit.

Starting point is 00:45:37 Nester Cortez with a big boy start. Garrett Cole kind of back at him. And oh, yeah, the Judge and Soto guys, yep, living up to the billing. More. Judge is on pace for 61 again. There's notes on that. How about the Bastin Red Sox kid? Your first team out of the wild card.

Starting point is 00:45:58 They take two out of three from Houston. I feel like every time they've come against a tough part of their schedule, they lean in as they win the next two games after being walked off. Yiner Diaz in that first one. Durant with a 4-4-4. My God, Tristan Kosses is back. Two-for-three with a homer, and Rafael. Him and Hamilton, man, they put pressure on you.

Starting point is 00:46:21 As the Sox take the final two games in the series. Oh, yeah. Justin Verlander's back. Kate Upton's husband. How do you like that? Five innings, two earn runs. The race, man, they split four with Oakland. We're pissed about it, and they're pissed about it.

Starting point is 00:46:37 out. They get into a little spat. Our guy Caballero and Yandi Diaz. Caballero, I'm going to be honest with you, my little man. I don't think you want that smoke. I do not, from one small guy to another, I do not think you want that smoke. They split with the Oakland A's, and I think the sadder thing for Tampa, it's kind of a fair fight.

Starting point is 00:46:58 Joe Boyle, Boyle D's nuts. He put it on him. Asvaldo Beito, feels like this guy's only had good starts recently. Ray's won the two middle games. Bosn and Estes going toe to toe. Durel Herniz struggled with that one all year. Texas Rangers take two out of three from Pittsburgh as they win the bread games. The final two games, someone got shut out.

Starting point is 00:47:24 Mitch Keller shut them out in game two. Where two former Yankee grades, Domingo Hermann and Andrew Heaney, teed up in that final game. Wyatt Langford, the kid with the walkoff. Keep building on it. Royals take two out of three from the Angels. The Angels have become one of my favorite teams to watch for kind of the wrong reasons, if I'm being honest. Royals, they go bread games.

Starting point is 00:47:46 As Michael Lorenzen outdules, Johnny Quedo for the Angels gets a standing ovation. It's a weird sport. Hey, no, it's Paul DeYoung falling out for Kansas City and playing a sharp hot corner Treb. I know you like that. Zach Netto, good. We like that a lot. Royals get their business done, and then my goodness, Reds, Blue Jays.

Starting point is 00:48:10 I've got double digits on the boards these last two games for Rios pitched well. George Springer, a couple homers like that for my preseason bet. And it's an Ernie Clement year. Ernie Clement just keeps homering. Why not? That's what's going on in the end. I need the standings. Like you need air pop.

Starting point is 00:48:35 Okay, because it's Monday. We're going to start on the East Coast. or the Yankees. Is this the biggest division lead you've had in a while? One and a half games, it seems like it. Yeah, biggest since June. 75 and 53 as I'm looking at Jared Weaver on the baseball reference front page. What's up, Weeb daddy?

Starting point is 00:48:56 Baltimore, 74 and 55. The Red Sucks 67 and 59. Tampa Bay, still flirting with 500, 64 and 63. And those Blue Jays, 60 and 68. in the central Cleveland just figures it out. I know they lost the series, but 73 and 54, they've kind of been down bad as of late. And Kansas City and the twins have kind of made up some ground here.

Starting point is 00:49:21 Only two games back. Those teams are tied 71 and 56 apiece. The Detroit Tigers are 62 and 66. And then the White Sox almost to 100 losses. 31 and 97. What's Grady Seismore's record and is taking over as manager B's, Please look at that for us. And then out west, 69 and 58 for the Astros, who are now five and a half games up on the Seattle Mariners, who are 64 and 64.

Starting point is 00:49:50 Texas, 10 games under 500, 59 and 69, Oakland, 55 and 73, and the Angels, 54 and 74. In the wild card, it's the Baltimore Orioles with the top spot. then Minnesota and Kansas City both tied for the second and third wild card spots with Boston really the only team with a chance there. Three and a half games back of Minnesota and Kansas City. The White Sox are three and eight with Grady Seismore. And those are the standings. Better. The American League, is it?

Starting point is 00:50:27 Yeah, I think sadly. Like kind of, because if you'd really, they're three and nine without them, 31 and 97. Trev incredible work. A little bit better. Let me get my ALS jabs in quick per usual. I mean, it was just a hilarious, because it also happened in a couple minutes yesterday that it was like, okay, so the angels are extending Perry Manasian,

Starting point is 00:50:53 which, don't get me wrong. I kind of like a little bit of what he's done with some of these young guys, so I get it. But it's just ironical to see the last place, HALO. extending their GM. The Mariners on the other end of this spectrum fire their manager because they can't hit.

Starting point is 00:51:11 The A's don't know where they're playing next season. Texas basically taking a buy year after winning the World Series, which is fair. And here's Oakland up five and a half. And they'll probably win the division by 10. It's just unreal. It's just unreal.

Starting point is 00:51:28 So I guess let's do Boston and Houston quick. Hey, Justin, Verlander's back, a solid start, although the Red Sox win that game. The Red Sox in that Mets position, the first team out of the wild card, they've got to keep it going. We've talked about their injuries, and like, it's kind of nuts that Yoshida's going now, and Kossis is back. Like, their pitching has really struggled recently, but they win a big series.

Starting point is 00:51:56 Halk gets a third straight quality start. I don't know. Does anything... I was just going to say, does anything matter, which turn it into a three-hour episode if we do that. But I guess- We need a talking life show, you and I. There's no doubt about it. It's coming from that pool in St. Louis. I think the Red Sox are going to be there until the end. I think they're going to give a legitimate, they're going to have a legitimate shot at making this wild car. I know it's three and a half games right now,

Starting point is 00:52:25 so it's kind of easy to say, but, you know, Tristan Kossess is back hitting homers. you know, I like all, like, I'm pretty sure they're all homegrown guys who I'm talking about right here. Jaron, Tristan Kossas, Yoshita is not really homegrown, but he's only known the Red Sox. He hits one off my guy, Taylor Scott, my African friend. It's a homer off him. Abrae, Rafael, like, you're talking about guys who are Red Sox guys, and I love that. Like, that's my favorite thing in baseball is when you have homegrown guys doing their thing. And these guys are within team control forever.

Starting point is 00:53:02 We were talking about the Devers versus Bogart situation as I saw Bogart's in San Diego. Devers has been incredible. I really like this Red Sox team. I know Kenley gets pumped there in the first game by Yonner Diaz to lose it, but he's been great.

Starting point is 00:53:20 I'm high on these guys. It would not shock me whatsoever if the Red Sox snuck into the playoffs. And we're like a legitimate threat into the whole playoff scenario. Man, they just locked up. They played Baltimore. and Houston, and they come out of there with a winning record over those seven games.

Starting point is 00:53:38 Like, that's a massive win. They've got the snakes for three in Boston. That's going to be a fun one this weekend. I saw a group of guys while I was drinking Mountain Dews last night. A group of guys comes in. One's wearing a Yankees hat. He gives me the look. They were on a dudes trip.

Starting point is 00:53:54 They go on a guys baseball trip every year, and they went to the Yankees game, and then they were heading up to Fenway. So, all right, love baseball people. Shout out to them. Didn't get any names. If Boston survives Arizona this weekend, which, again, they've played great against some of the better teams.

Starting point is 00:54:11 Toronto and Detroit, like, Boston, they've got some numbers that would tell you they're a top two offense in the game. They need their bullpen. Someone's got to lock in down there. And hey, Chris Martin back, and he gets his first save of the season. They need someone of Garcia,

Starting point is 00:54:30 Kelly Bernardino to like go on one of those five clean game stretches. That would be massive for them because you're right. Otherwise they're positioned. They're positioned pretty damn good. There's a stat on Chris Martin. When I was doing research, something like he hasn't had a walk in forever. He's walked a strikeout ratio over his last like 28 innings has been crazy. Hopefully that translates into them having that back in the bull.

Starting point is 00:55:00 and they were talking about, what's Nick Povetta's free agency going to look like? Two or three years with a decent paycheck, right? Like he's career 484 guy. It seems like he has like the stuff, but it never really translates over a full year of like decent numbers. He's never had under a four. He's never had under a four in his career. Yeah. I am. Is he the new Kyle Gibson? Gibby, Zach Eflin comes to mind a little bit.

Starting point is 00:55:37 Like, I feel with either the right team or, dude, you know, sometimes we're ERA bums and numbers on the scoreboard matter. Dude, this guy's-gib had some years under a four. He had 2018 with 36. He had 2021 a 37. This guy's had to pitch in Philly and Boston as his home stadiums. Like, I think Nick Povetta would kill to pitch for the Dodgers or pitch for Seattle. Seattle. Hey Seattle,

Starting point is 00:56:08 trade two of your starters for awesome hitters and sign Nick Povetta, and it'll give you a 3-8, and you'll be okay. I kind of like that. Kind of like that. GM Jakey here. Houston, Pregman gets a lead-off day,

Starting point is 00:57:06 The AL? I mean, I'll just, I mean, Yanks guards, two first place teams played. You didn't talk about them? I hit it on the burn on the way through. That had, uh, that, uh, that game one was brutal. Longest game of the year. Um, if you haven't seen the, the Austin Wells pinch hit, Trent Grisham running the bases. It's like, I don't know, the opposite of a Tom a Mansky video.

Starting point is 00:57:29 Uh, and that's where Yankee fans get frustrated. Like some, some of the fundies get, get missed on this team. And that's how the Yankees coach. him. I mean, it's Boone's a SoCal guy. They're the Yankees. Like, let our stars be stars. And hell, it's working for Judge and Soto. Um, and teaser, I got a little angry before the episode. You're going to hear more about Judge in a minute. Because what he's doing is fucking insane. It's insane. It's insane. Uh, and the guard dogs, they're in a little, they're in a little funk, man. Um, they've been, I think the second worst hitting team since the all-star break.

Starting point is 00:58:06 So they've got some real questions coming to the forefront as we head towards the final stretch of the season And I would not be surprised if the Houston Astros catch them Playoff seating wise Which could be important For however your AL bracket looks But yeah, I don't know You got to see Clause A for two endings on the first night

So he's right before second base, but he has like no momentum. Like he's basically stopped. the ball hits the top of the wall. He kind of kicks into gear and doesn't.

Starting point is 00:59:42 And then Luis Rojas, in slight defense of Trent, who should be running hard through third base. Oh, here's Trent. Hey, I don't hate it. Go. He's not paying the coach. So Luis Rojas. Is that how fast he runs?

Starting point is 01:00:03 No, he runs faster than that. I don't think he thought he was going to be sent. And his whole thing is like, Trent Grisham doesn't play with a motor, which it's like, okay, that's sick, dude, if you're bawling. Not sick in that example. Otherwise, I'm kind of cool, man. Starting point is 01:00:23 Rays get into a fight because they split four with Oakland. If they want to be a part of this season, you can't do that. And Ernie Clement. Starting point is 01:03:00 Joe Boyle had a great start. Fuck it, man. Because this guy's chasing 61 again. He homered in all three games of this series. One of those games, he had two homers. since he was ejected, and I think it's 98 games now, something like that, he has produced at a span that no other baseball player has done in that time frame. None, zero, not bonds, not Ruth, not whoever you like, whoever's your 1-1, Griffey,

Starting point is 01:03:33 Mays, Judge is going insane. And it's a privilege to watch him every night. It's also just mind-blowing. He's been playing center field. He's a 6-7-290-pound guy. You're not supposed to do that. Who didn't really do that until after age 30. Post-age 30 just started doing that.

Starting point is 01:03:58 Man, he's a joy to watch. Soto obviously gets an assist on this because he is a joy to watch. But the Aaron Judge Home Run race is back on. No, he's, it's. It's absolutely incredible to watch the guy hit right now. I cooked out some numbers on baseball today about him as well. I think he's slugging 830-ish, something like that, since the beginning of May, which I will tell people again,

Starting point is 01:04:29 that's a legitimate OPS. Right. And he's slugging it. On base percentage, over five is crazy. It's crazy. His slugging for the year is currently higher than the average league OPS. So, okay, here's my question. And this is legitimate.

Starting point is 01:04:52 Judge is doing historic things. Just talked about all the numbers. Let's say he gets to 60 again. What's more impressive? Him or show hate? I don't know if I want to say probably or possibly. Somewhere in the middle of those going 50-50. No one's ever done 50-50, right?

Starting point is 01:05:16 50-50 would be more impressive because that's 10 more homes. homers plus being a top two stolen base guy in the game. That's insane. Yeah, man, I think I think Shohei wants 50-50. I think in a year when he's not pitching, he wants that. It's so close. He's not at 40-40 yet, but he's one behind. And I think he's eyeing that.

Starting point is 01:05:46 to have those two seasons together is like we're watched go watch Aaron Judge please like go watch him hit go watch Shohei Otani like you're going to be able to tell your grandkids that you saw these dudes

Starting point is 01:06:04 live like that's the type of players we're talking about bro how cool is that yeah I want to let passing the love around more although one of these players gets the short end of the stick but he's a short guy and he doesn't give a fuck luckily. Jose Ramirez is 30-30 again, which I mean unreal, and there's also a month left. So let's see where he lands the ship.

Starting point is 01:06:24 Jose Ramirez comically lands top five in the MVP basically every year. So Shohei is doing Jose Ramirez plus and he can pitch. And he can pitch as good as anyone. The argument for Judge would be he'd be the third guy to ever hit 60 homers a second time. if he's if he's done it which nobody's done 50-50 but the other but the two guys that did 60 twice are accused of cheating

Starting point is 01:06:54 love that I love that and yeah so who would be so okay that's that's I think that's maybe a talk for another time like if it was a full on baseball MVP or let's say they both were in the same league again who gets who gets it I think I go I think I almost go judge

Starting point is 01:07:16 because he's playing the field right that's where it gets crazy that way to play center field versus deaching. And I just want to tie the knot on it that Juan Soto has a seven and a half war, a 1.037 OPS. He's got a 430 on basis 607 slug, and he's getting overshadowed. But to the view from the outside slash kind of inside, I think he's okay with it. And I think he's liking it. because he just finished off eight homers in ten games. It's insane.

Starting point is 01:07:57 It's not. Dude, if the Yankees have a couple things click, Trev, it's real. If they don't, oh my God. Oh, my God. Who's your standout again? I can do that dance. Yeah, right? Okay.

Starting point is 01:08:16 My standout is Frankie Montas. And I had to give it to him, Jake, because, well, do the Brewers really need starting pitching? They've proven that they don't, but it's nice to have it. On Tuesday, the lone win of that they got, he went seven-nings pitch, only one hit, no earned runs, one walk, gets the W there. Since coming over to Milwaukee, let's just talk about his stats before coming to Milwaukee with the Cincinnati Reds. He came over with a 501 earned run average through 19 starts. 501. That's not very good.

Starting point is 01:08:55 Not even really serviceable. That's going to get you sent down in most places. Since coming over to Milwaukee, 21 innings pitched, six earned runs, 21 Ks for a 257. Because of course. Of course. Of course. If Frankie Montas can put up. sub three for this Milwaukee team.

Starting point is 01:09:20 Like what are we going to be saying about that, man? Like what? Does anybody want to face them? I don't know. I don't know, man. I don't know. They continue to kind of like just defy everything that we think. Only because name the other teams in the NL playoffs.

Starting point is 01:09:41 I know. There's actually, okay, I shouldn't say that does anybody want to face them? Because there's a bunch, I think there's a bunch of good teams in the NL. And I don't think there's that many good teams in the AL. That's my take. Let's see where the AL lands. Like if my Yanks had something click, dude, Houston's like back in their Houston.

Starting point is 01:09:58 Like that, nobody's talking really about that. We are talking about them. We are talking about them. When I think of World Series winner this year, I think NL. I don't know why. Oh. I like that out of you. You sound like a pregnant woman being like,

Starting point is 01:10:15 I know. I know what's in my belly. I'm trying to see if they made any, crazy adjustments with Montau since coming over it looks like they kind of can the split for the most part he was kind of throwing that

Starting point is 01:10:31 let's see yeah he was throwing that quite a bit in Cincinnati looks like they kind of canned the split and they've really gone you know sinker four seamer and just throwing his fastballs a lot more okay that's your pitch that's what works go throw that I don't own an MLB team.

Starting point is 01:10:54 How do you not, how do you not hit up your defense and pitching departments and say, hey, give me a full report on whatever Milwaukee's doing? Okay. What do you mean? They're clearly ahead of so many teams. As far as pitching, yes. As far as pitching, yes.

Starting point is 01:11:24 Here's the thing. Everybody has the same numbers, but it's digging through the numbers and then being able to teach how to apply. And then having your guys buy in on it. So those are all things that like we talked about some guy that we know that's going to be intervening for a phenomenal job and how to do that. I think there is, that's the difference in the teams. You have to have the guys that can sift through the numbers, make him palatable for the players, and then have someone that can. show them how to apply that. And the buy-in is also important.

Starting point is 01:11:59 Milwaukee has all those things. Okay. Trev, great standout. Pitching money's so funny. Frankie Montas keeps us going to the finish line. He'll get another little bag. A little baggeroo. Not too bad.

For the two weeks, this is the list you want to be on, Jake. Starting point is 01:20:00 That's kind of the coolest thing. Last night, how about this? I turned twisters on with the kids in Olivia. Rated PG-13, but I'm like, well, it's really can be so bad. And it really, it's just like some people getting sucked up into tornadoes, which is a little scary for them. But at the same time, they're like, they don't understand what a tornado is. We don't have those out here.

Starting point is 01:20:18 So, anyways, I like a good family movie. Nick Cage and National Treasure, that gives us exactly that, you know, some fun, some intrigues, some. mystery, kind of like a who done it type scenario. Gotta love him. It's a thriller. Go watch those movies.

Starting point is 01:20:34 Also, The Rock. Name some other Nick Cage movies. Face off. The Rock. I'll cast my ballot. Go watch the Rock. If you're like,

Starting point is 01:20:47 if you're trying to get off energy drinks, watch the Rock. Another national treasure happened. or something, a national treasure was in the news, if you will. And that was our guy, Joey Vado, and I'd be remiss if I didn't give this guy my award. Usually I try to go with, you know, guys doing well around the league or something that happened. But I think this is important because Joey Votto really, to me, was a guy that I looked at and I didn't understand when I first was in the league.

Starting point is 01:21:26 because the league was different. You know, guys were trying to hit homers. They still are. And Joey Vado kind of broke the mold there. People talk about like swing revolution and all these things with, you know, Donaldson and maybe even like a Joey Battista. But Joey was on like a different level. The on-base percentage is absolutely nuts with Joey Votto.

Starting point is 01:21:53 He had the patience that people got frustrated with. career, Jake, 409 on base percentage. He led the league and on base percentage one, two, three times. He led the National League and on base percentage, one, two, three, four, five, six, seven times. Patience, patience, patience. You know I love when a guy can have more walks and strikeouts.

Starting point is 01:22:18 Here's some examples. In 2017, he hit 134 walks to 83 strikeouts. That gets my juice. uses going. And even then, he's like, you know what, I can hit some homers too. 37 homers, 36 homers. The guy ended up with 356 career homers. He's a sure file hall famer. What I liked about Joey Votto was, and there's all these stories coming out now. You know, I think at the beginning of his career, he's really just focused on being a good baseball player. Sure. And the personality hadn't really come out yet. And then as his career went on and he got settled and he gets this big, massive contract,

Starting point is 01:22:55 start to feel a little bit more comfortable with everything. He starts to develop his personality. He starts going on intentional talk in the Mountie outfit. We see him do like the TikToks where he's dresses Harry Potter twerking. Like these things started that happened kind of out of nowhere. And people are like, what is Joe Evato all about, man? Turns out he went to some improv classes. One off season just to learn how to be.

Starting point is 01:23:25 be like better in interviews, better at first base talking to guys. And that level of like commitment to like bettering yourself, I think encapsulates Joey Vado, who he was as a baseball player on and off the field. I think he's very like well spoken, funny. Obviously what he did on the field, Nassie ends his career, Jake, with a 920 OPS. Like so you slug over five. He almost three, four, five that for his whole career. and I believe if the last couple of years weren't there, he probably would have.

Starting point is 01:23:59 2002 and 2023, he hit 205 and 202 to get his average down to 294. So 294-409-1. He almost 3-4-5 for his entire career, which had been incredible. So I wanted to give Joey Varley Award just to give him a shout-up, but I wanted to also talk about the thing I thought it was like the best that, the best thing he did, the most, what I like the most, what I like the most. what I like the most is his ability to troll the fans

Starting point is 01:24:28 on the first base side because fans when he play one of the corner spots fans are right up against you you hear him all the time they talk crap and I don't know if you remember he had like the stretch

Starting point is 01:24:40 where he was faking throwing the balls to the crowd and then like rolling him in and like usually he'd be like oh what you know what a dick why is he doing that but every time he would do it he'd turn around he'd have that silly like smirk on his face

Starting point is 01:24:52 Like he was having so much fun with it. I just feel like that's kind of like what the game is all about. If you're able to perform at this level and then you get to the point where you can just start having fun with the fans, you just know you're, you know, you're a baller. This guy's a Hall of Famer. I don't, there are some people that are going to want to debate it because he didn't get to like, you know, the standard 500 homers or the whatever it is. But to me, it's like almost a no doubter.

Starting point is 01:25:21 So shout out Joey Votto. Canada's been down bad as of late. Just down bad. The Blue J's stink. Drake is skinny and just like not there. He's like releasing music on like some weird fake Instagram. Like things are weird right now in Canada. But if you want to celebrate a storied career, you got it now.

Starting point is 01:25:43 Joy Votto. Shout out. You're my National Treasure Award. Well done, Trevor. And he really is. And I, Joey Votto is baseball. He is.

Starting point is 01:25:55 The quirks. You know, I actually, I wasn't the biggest Votto guy. I found some of that stuff a little off-putting. And I had to check in because, I mean, I'm a little fucking off-putting. A lot of cussing this up for me. Yeah, watch out with that. That, uh, it's incredible either way. And I felt verified.

Starting point is 01:26:15 There was a couple players that were like, you know, Votto wasn't necessarily my cup of tea, but he's, he's still a great guy. and that's what matters. And, dude, the Chris Rose intentional talk stuff is so great. And, like, you know, again, where we're at with baseball and what that show did for baseball and everything like that. Yeah, I mean, I love it. And I'm happy for him and his whole retirement stuff.

Starting point is 01:26:41 Again, it was very Joey Votto. There's a lot of ways to skin a cat. And I think, you know, Brett Gardner went into retirement and hasn't been heard from. He's been, he's been missing. the game's done. You know, Joey Votto, he makes his post, which I respect. And then, you know, you get the story after that that he got picked up by an Uber driver. And the Uber driver asked, are you a player? And he said, nope. And, you know, again, that's out there. And it's good that it's out there. We need more out there in baseball. And Votto's incredible. And he's one of the

Starting point is 01:27:12 best players to ever play this game. And, like, that's, again, when I say Joey Votto is baseball, like his approach to hitting, like, it has to be in the zone. otherwise what are we doing? Like that's, your job as the pitcher is put that ball in the zone. If not, I'm not going to chase it. You know, the crazy, like, no pop out to first base stat is crazy. No, no pass to the infield. Right.

Starting point is 01:27:36 I mean, that's, like, it doesn't even make sense. But it's how he envisioned hitting and he was so good at it that he had the contact tool. He had the power tool. He had the, he had everything. He had everything, which is super rare. And it's just so Every hitter's approach

Starting point is 01:27:55 And every pitcher's approach is different That makes this sport so beautiful That you know, Jose Altuve is a 5-6 guy Put it around the plate And watch what I'm going to do to that ball Where Joey Votto's approach is so different And so beautiful And they're both going to end up in the same place

Starting point is 01:28:11 That he is a national treasure, isn't he? We love a good Canadian. We love a Nick Cage reference I'll go high and tight. I'm going to go with the Trust Your Eyes Award. We talked a little bit about Rysel Iglesias's pursuit of crazy perfection that doesn't happen. I think 35 straight batters have been out at his expense. And for me, it was kind of simple. Ryssel Iglesias could do everything. Rysel Iglesias has velocity. Rysel

Starting point is 01:28:45 O'Glasis has a bunch of pitches. Reisel O'Glacios has location. And the other thing that I think Sneaky made me a Rysel guy, he changes up his arm slot. Like, it blows my mind more pitches don't do that, but it's also, I understand it's putting in reps and making sure you're executing your pitch, blah, blah, blah. Rysel can do everything on the mount.

Starting point is 01:29:08 Everything. Trev, I saw a kid early on this year that I was like, wait, he can do everything. Jackson Merrill. I thought about if I was being clicky putting this award with a little more malice of like, hey, Paul Skeens, nice dude, nice mustache, you throw hard, you get all the headlines. He's got a- He would break you in half.

Starting point is 01:29:31 He's got a famous honey. And I love all that for Paul Skeens. That's why I'm keeping the hate out of my heart. Good, good, good. Jackson Merrill, bro. This kid, we found out like on the. the Korea trip he's going and we're like okay Padres got another shortstop not playing shortstop that they're going to have play center field this year remember how much we talked about the Padres

Starting point is 01:29:52 need a lefty stick Jackson Merrill just took over the favorite for NL rookie of the year over Paul Skeens bro he did the betting odds the betting odds he jumped Paul Skeens who's got everything you want in rookie of the year hype famous uh started the started the started the All-Star game. People were debating if he should be in the Sy Young contest. Was it 1-1-1? All of it. LSU, you go, daggers. Jackson Merrill, a 123 OPS plus.

Starting point is 01:30:26 Does he have pop? 805 OPS, 18 homers on the year. Can he run? 13 swipes. Can he play defense? Bro, some of the plays he's making in center field. It almost makes me mad, Trev, because I was, you're going to love this.

Starting point is 01:30:43 I was one of the first kids. When you're young and you're playing, you're in the infield, if you're good, right? Like, that's just honest. I was one of the first kids. Got him to pitch in my thumb right hand one year. I couldn't really throw. So I went to the outfield because I could play out there and figure it out. So I took so much pride in it.

Starting point is 01:31:03 I was like, I'm going to be the best center fielder ever. And I'll be honest with you. It is the one thing in sports I think I got pretty good at. I would hunt down balls. I had it. I had the juice out there, Trev. I loved it. I loved it.

Starting point is 01:31:15 I would turn heads. It was fun. When you're an athlete, you can learn the outfield. And this 20, now 21-year-old kid is playing center field like he's born there. And I don't even know the next steps with them. Like, we could see him starting at shortstop for the Padres next year. And I wouldn't be shocked, right? I wouldn't be shocked if he'd be starting.

Starting point is 01:31:44 by the end of this year. They got to figure something out, I'm telling us. I saw the guy taking ground balls out there. He was an all-star this year, 124 games, a 123 OPS plus. He can do it all on the baseball field.

Starting point is 01:31:59 And I don't know. I'm going to start trusting my eyes a little more because I was like, I saw a couple, just a couple games of this kid, and I was like, what? Good for him, man. Jackson Merrill.

I mean, just a hilarious young ball ball.

Starting point is 01:35:30 I went up there, baby. I know you've done that. Now, that was an awesome moment. You know, obviously I'm rooting for the twins there, but, uh, great. I mean, San Diego, crowds, stand up and give yourself a freaking pat on the back because it was awesome. Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday.

Starting point is 01:35:47 games filling the freaking place up, man. It was really, really cool. Man, it's, um... I get why everyone started signing there now. Like, first of all, they're just throwing money around. It's a ton of money. That's where you start. But like, you get to live in San Diego,

Starting point is 01:36:05 play in that park. The fans are great. Like, what's not to love? Dude, there's, uh, there are going to be some... You say this every year, and I probably need to stop. But, dude, snakes went to the... the World Series last year. Dodgers are built for World Series or bust. San Diego believes, again, they've been the best team in baseball for a month. Atlanta Braves are supposed to be in Dynasty mode.

Starting point is 01:36:28 Phillies, like, a couple of those teams are going to lose in the three-game, three-gamer. Hey, great year, boys. Your seventh inning guy got popped. It's over. I'd almost rather have one game than three games. I'm telling you. Something about three games doesn't feel right to me.
