Starting point is 00:00:01 Hello and welcome to talking baseball. The White Sox are chasing history. Let that be the last time we talk about them. Snell, no, no. Baseball's hot in the streets. Let's talk ball. Huh. Got to look the batter in the eyes.
Starting point is 00:00:26 Hello and welcome to talk in baseball. Present to you by Seat Geek. Otani 30, 30. Geez. My name is Jake Storeilly. That is Trevor Ploub. BBD on the mixtape. Hope everyone had a good weekend.
Starting point is 00:00:41 I thought it was a great weekend of ball. Dalton noted in our sheet, was this the most competitive weekend of baseball this season? Not sure. I think the White Sox might be able to eliminate that combo instantly. But there was a ton of great baseball going on around the yard. And it was like full tilt summer, kind of like nasty summer. It's hot out.
Starting point is 00:01:06 You need some AC, go watch the Olympics, Watch the Americans dominate. Speaking of dominant Americans, Trevor, how are you? That's a great intro right there, a dominant American. Oh, I'm doing great, Poppy. I agree that baseball was excellent this weekend. We call them the dog days, but really it's the desperation days. Teams are like, we can do it still, I think.
Starting point is 00:01:29 And like, really they can't, but they're really trying to do it. So I enjoy that. I enjoy some of the call-ups that we've got. I enjoy some of the second go rounds that we're seeing. You mentioned Shohei 30. 30. Do you see the Homer? Oh, my God.
Starting point is 00:01:45 That guy's, you can't even talk about him. No. Like, what's up with him? Why is he so freaking good? That's why we're the, that's why we're the best baseball show in the world. We don't talk about show. I'm going to yuck about him a little bit, but it's ridiculous.
Starting point is 00:01:57 No, no show hay on this program. I'll tell you about Ben lively with his 10th win for the guards. A couple of Benz will be talking about today. Oh, bend over. Not that Ben Rice. guy. Tampa Bay Rays mixing it up again.
Starting point is 00:02:12 I got some notes on them. They're playing desperate. They're playing desperate. Who else do we want to get Jazzy on? If there's ever been a Rays-Gon-Ray scenario, it's like the last three weeks for them. And for me, going back to TPP season,
Starting point is 00:02:27 forgot how much cheese I put on the raise to hit their 84 and a half over. So seeing, I had already, that money was already gone. And now we're back in play. let's yuck ball. That's what it's all about, people. And because it's Monday,
Starting point is 00:02:45 we start with the AL recap. Brought you by T-Mobile. Team Mobile, America's largest 5G network. Trev's a large five, and for guys like us that we're keeping track of everything around the baseball world, it's a lot. It's daunting.
Starting point is 00:03:02 Dalt's on the sheet. Trev's got his Twinkies, we got the Yanks. Otherwise, we're trying to check in. You guys know your team better than us. And Team Mobile knows the 5G coverage game better than anyone. So if you're keeping up with ball while you're on the summer go, TeamMobile's the best way to do it. Listen to podcasts, watch your team play,
Starting point is 00:03:24 or even go to teammobile.com slash coverage, say connected to your team home and away. Click the link in the description. One of T-Mobile's competitors, me and them are on bad terms. I'm going to leave it there. Um, they did not like what Dallas Jake was about. Uh, and that's why I'm a T-Mobile man. So, uh, let's do some,
Starting point is 00:03:46 Orioles guards, the two best teams in the league? Wrong. The Guardians and the Orioles, they split for the guard dogs. Took the first two. Ben lively, first pitcher for them with 10 wins. Treps fishing buddy? I think I have that right. Uh, no, that's someone else.
Starting point is 00:04:11 That's Col Irvin, who got. DFAed by the Orioles. Anyways, the Orioles came back, they won the next two games. Zephlin and then Corbin Burns, although it's not a Corbyn's stat line. Because Gunner and Jackson Holiday. Oh, good time to be a Byrds fan, ain't it? These two teams end up splitting four Eloys hitting for the Orioles. That's obvious.
Starting point is 00:04:36 And Cleveland, I don't, you know, Josh Naylor with a couple big boy games. I don't want that to be forgotten. but a four-game split. He. Yanks are back, Trev. You know it. They take two out of three from the Toronto Blue Jays. Stroman and Gossman get hit around.
Starting point is 00:04:53 Vladdy was nuts throughout this whole series. He might be auditioning for new teams come this offseason. Aaron Judge is not, but all he does is Homer. 41, Trev, it's early August. Soto's pretty good, and Adjee-J-Lameh. you extra innings walk off why not us yanks are back houston astros hey here's our new party trick you say cacucci gives up two runs on the first two batters of the game but then that was it because he punched 11 tickets including eight in a row some in the water down there but there's
Starting point is 00:05:32 always something in the raise water they take game to josh low balls out so does brandon low and then a 1-0 getaway day. Tyler Alexander as the bulk man after Biggie Smalls open. Erigetti, my guy, he was fantastic, 12 strikeouts of his own, but a 1-0 win as Tampa continues to get back into this season. The Phillies are still struggling, and part of that is credit to the Seattle Mariners. They rolled them in game one. That fun Tyler Phillips story, he gets rocked around the yard.
Starting point is 00:06:08 Victor Robles. A little comeback story for Seattle there. And then they take the next game in extras. Mitch Hanager playing well in the second half of the season. Randy with a couple hits. Polanco with a couple hits. But they get shut down by Zach Wheeler, eight innings clean. And then Bryce Hopper with the big day at the office.
Starting point is 00:06:30 He had been in a bad funk. Let's see if that sparks them. Seattle. We're going to see where they are in Trevor Plu's standings. It's like Jake Storelli. on top. The Red Sox and the Rangers played three. Red Sox win the bread games. They're back in it. After they win 11 to 6 and 7-2, bad series to be a starting pitcher. Good series to be Williore a Brayu. A couple big boy days at the office, including a two homer day to round it off. Texas did
Starting point is 00:06:59 win that middle game. Heim, Duran, Tavares, all with multi-hit days. Sox kid. They hold served with the surging Tampa Bay Race. The Royals take three out of four from the Detroit Tigers, because they handle their business in the Central. That's what they do. Seth Lugo and Cole Riggins, they're getting it done on the bump. And you know who's doing it offensively for them?
Starting point is 00:07:23 It's always Bobby Witt, but also a pass-watch to Homer Day. Salvi getting his ticket punch and complimenting the pitcher on his way out. Why not? He did that with Scoobble, but otherwise he was hit. as well. Tigers won the third game because Jim, or excuse me, Trev's guy, Jim Leland
Starting point is 00:07:43 told them to fucking win a game. So they did. Otherwise, they lost them all. Mets and Halos played three, and the Mets, they drop a series to the Angels, including the final pitch, Ben Joyce, the pitch heard around the world.
Starting point is 00:08:01 104-7, 1037? My goodness. Fun game. Back and forth on that final day. Jose Soriano, I feel like he always gives a good start. Where are the numbers at on the year? Mets won that first game, Alonzo two-run job, or Paul Blackburn in his first start, sure. And the Minnesota Twins swept the White Sox. Royce Lewis is back. He goes Apo easy, and the White Sox, they just lose 20 in a row, Trev. And that's what happened in the American League. you're the best poppy you shohay and erin judge just on top i actually haven't seen you guys in the same room
Starting point is 00:08:42 but that would be cool if you guys were in the same one day you're different like levels and whatever we're all good do you want the standings need them yeah i need them uh we're doing the a l uh that's because that's what that's what you just read from the sheet i'm gonna start out west though because as you mentioned you're a top and Seattle is atop the AOS leading by one game over the Houston Ashoes Seattle 59 and 54 Houston 57 and 54
Starting point is 00:09:11 and then the Rangers 53 and 59 they're five and a half games back about nine games back of the wild card they got to get it going quick part of their it's desperation season for the Rangers the Angels 49 and 63 Oakland 46 and 67
Starting point is 00:09:29 in the Central Cleveland continues to lead. 67 and 44. Yes, that's the best record in the American League. Minnesota, four and a half games behind them at 62 and 48. The Kansas City Royal, 63 and 50. Tigers is 53 and 60. And the White Sox, just 60 games under 500.
Starting point is 00:09:51 Jake at 27 and 87. And my goodness, Ozzy Gien and the postgame show are just having the most fun. Everybody else it's a White Sox fan or employed by the White Sox not having fun. But that post game show, they're having a great time. And out east, the Yankees and the Orioles tied at the top, 67 and 46 apiece. Boston,
Starting point is 00:10:15 six and a half games back. Both of those teams at 59 and 51. The raise, like you mentioned, three games over 500, 57 and 54. And then Toronto's just falling off. 51 and 61. That's 10 games under 500, Jake. And the wild card. It's either Baltimore or the Yankees with the first wildcard spot. Then my twins behind them and the Royals still occupying the third spot in the wildcard standings with Boston, two and a half games back besides them.
Starting point is 00:10:45 And then it's Houston and Tampa five games back. And as I mentioned, the Rangers nine and a half games back. Poppy, those are the standings in the American League. A little bit of, well done. A little bit of distance in that American league. It's hard to be. in that American League wild card, right? Yeah, well, it called Dog Days for a reason.
Starting point is 00:11:07 Let's see if, you know, can Houston or Seattle get hot enough that they'll be in the wild card mix? Will the race continue to play a better brand of baseball? Or are we going to be looking at Red Sox Royals twins trying to figure out that final wildcard spot? Let's sort out, hey? It's the two best teams with the two best records in the American. American League, although the Yanks are right there. Just a reminder for everyone. And they're back.
Starting point is 00:11:36 I love that for you guys. But, Trevor, well, it's two stories. It's two stories here. The Guardians hold serve and they've continued to have like the best record for a while now. And when do we stop being skeptical? And it's like you hear, I've been hammering Ben lively for his 10 game wins and that should be a good thing. but I think people put that into like a negative column for the guard dogs as well.
Starting point is 00:12:03 Imagine if you're Ben lively and everyone's like, Ben lively is your best pitchers. Like, yeah, like I'm actually pitching good though. What's your Ben lively story? You guys were just same team. We're teammates. Yeah, minor league teammates, man. Okay.
Starting point is 00:12:16 We had a great time of Philly together. And yes, he owns a fishing charter business. I've never been fishing with him. Okay. Lane Thomas doing some things for this. but on the other side, when you see Jackson Holiday come back up and he has been killing it.
Starting point is 00:12:35 And that combination up the middle is what they dreamed of before the season. Adley kind of went into a funk a little bit. He has a couple big hits in this series that I guess the Orioles formula showed while some Guardians people still don't believe in their formula? It's dramatic. Who doesn't believe in the Guardians formula anymore?
Starting point is 00:12:55 I just, it's been, It's been too long, people. You've got to believe in this team. Hitting with runs the scoring position. David Fry, who was excellent for them at the beginning of the season, he's been struggling big time. Since June, I got his numbers, Pop, you want him? Yeah.
Starting point is 00:13:08 225, 293, 310 slug for a 603 OPS. He only had one homer and 11 runs driven in, including this series with this homer. That's his first homer in 47 games. So a guy that was kind of almost not carrying their offense was a big part of why they got up to the start. He's been struggling. If he starts to come back around, you know,
Starting point is 00:13:31 any semblance of what he was before, I mean, the Guardians have, you know, four or five hitters that are just kind of going. And it can carry that team. So you talk about the offense. Oh, we don't know what they're going to do, but they can get you with speed. They can get you with some power.
Starting point is 00:13:46 Yeah, the starting pitching is interesting and they're going to have to figure that out. But, I mean, they have the bullpen to get it done. And that's just kind of been their MO. Trevor Rogers for the for the for the Orioles gets kind of knocked around I honestly think I mean I know that Baltimore's lineup is much longer um than the guardians but they're kind of facing the same thing with their pitching not to the the extent that the guardians are but I would say that if you were to point at one area where you know the Orioles have maybe a deficiency
Starting point is 00:14:22 will be like they don't have a huge amount of starting pitching depth even with the addition of Eflin. So I mean, these are two good teams. If we saw them matched up in the playoffs, the series would go something like this. Yeah. Who steps up on the day, you know? And if you're an Orioles fan, yeah, seeing Jackson come up in and providing the spark that he's provided, like, that's what you're hoping for.
Starting point is 00:14:49 Kobe Mayo gets called up. He's playing some third base. for them. So you've got a 20-year-old second baseman, a 22-year-old third baseman, a 22-year-old shortstop, or excuse me, 23 now. Gunner had his birthday, so sorry about that. Colton Couser, who got off to a hot start, and then he ended up in a little bit of funk. He's been going off for them recently. He's got a hit street going. Just lost the number. Good shit, Jake. that yeah, you mentioned the starting pitching and Eflin has given them exactly what they're going to ask for for Eflin.
Starting point is 00:15:23 Their bullpen feels a little deeper. Soto had a bad day at the office and Soto had a good day at the office. I think it's going to be an exciting time. Like this August is when the dead team start to die a little more, right? Like you just traded pieces away. The season's over. I think they said it well on the Yankees broadcast. They were like,
Starting point is 00:15:45 Blue Jays want to win this game, the Yankees need to win this game. The Yankees schedule is starting to ease up a little bit. And the Orioles, it feels like they're about to click that I hope this Baltimore Yankees race becomes like a real ALE East race. Because to avoid that wild card game, man, I mean, that is, here's three games to decide your season and who are you going to be facing? Like, I don't know. Is Houston going to sneak in?
Starting point is 00:16:16 Do you want to play three against them to decide your season? So I think that race is about to get a lot of fun where Cleveland, and they had a five-game win streak before they end up losing the final two games of the series. Oh, your twins are lurking? I don't know. Yep, I mean, between Jose Ramirez and Josh Nail,
Starting point is 00:16:35 I mean, Jose O'Rubierst has 29 homers, 93 runs driven in, Nailers, like, 20-something with 80 runs driven in. And again, like, we're just at the beginning of July. both of them are going to be 30 and 100 guys. Like, that's, I just don't think people give the Guardian's offense enough credit, essentially. And again, they can kind of beat you in a bunch of different ways. And I'll never get over the fact that Bo Nailer and Josh Nailer are just hammering it out in the same team. How awesome is that?
Starting point is 00:17:03 That's sick. Canadians. Also, Elo, you mentioned Ely going over and getting Knox. He's only five for nine since joining. the Orioles, dude. We're probably talking about Kopec in a little bit, but if you were performing poorly on the White Sox, but you have potential, maybe some, you know,
Starting point is 00:17:23 a good track record, you got out of the bad situation. You probably feel like the weight of the world is lifted off your shoulders, dude. Oh, we're going to a winning ball club? Whoa, cool. That's what they're saying. That's the message.
Starting point is 00:17:38 60 games under 500, bro. 60. 20 in a row. Yeah, I guess the Cleveland question marks are tough just because it's so young. Like, you know, Angel Martinez, who's been playing some center field for them, whether it's Rokio, it's short, Bo Nailer. Like, it's going to be very interesting to see where these guys are come October, because, like we talk about when we do TPPs at the beginning of the season and then we feel like idiots, so many of these teams are dictated by young guys. They're like, hey, I know J. Ram's going to be there. I'm pretty sure Naylor and Kwan are going to be there.
Starting point is 00:18:16 Thomas, let's see, should be. But like, what are you going to get out of those other guys? And then we always get thrown off by the starting pitching. And right now, you know, Gavin Williams has a couple numbers that are tough. Right now, they're rotations listed as our guy is Sabib, Tanner Bybee. Gavin Williams. He actually, I think, exited not too long ago. Have we got reports that he's going to be okay?
Starting point is 00:18:41 I don't think he didn't go on the IL, but he skipped the start. Yeah, they don't have his next start listed. Bivey scratched. Hasn't felt great all year, but he's not concerned. You don't love that. Don't like that at all. Got him be feeling like shit, Skip. Yeah, I felt bad all year.
Starting point is 00:19:04 But they still got that bullpen. What do they got coming up? Arizona, who doesn't lose series, and then the Minnesota Twins. No, it's huge. They play, I believe, seven games against the twins in August. This is a huge Guardians week. It's huge.
Starting point is 00:19:20 Huge. Wow. Okay, Trev. The Central is the talking point of all of baseball, Jake, if you didn't know. Yeah, because they have a team that's lost 20 straight games. Yeah, exactly. We have everything. The team with the best record and the team with the worst record.
Starting point is 00:19:38 Do you want to say anything about the twins or the White Sox? I mean, Royce Lewis was back and he went opo easy, which you know I like seeing that. Well, that was big for him because he needed to go opo. Yeah. I saw him play a few games. He got out of whack in New York. That front hip was firing early. And he needed to go that way to feel it.
Starting point is 00:19:59 And he's just, he's a freak, man. He really is. He thinks differently than other people. Those people, like, if you say that about somebody, an athlete. usually. It kind of rings true. Like Kobe Bryant, like thought different about the game. I'm not comparing them. I'm just saying like there are certain people who have mindsets that like bad thoughts like just don't really enter their head. They just say like I'm just better than that. And he's like one of those people that just doesn't. And for a hitter to not think that way is crazy because you
Starting point is 00:20:36 fail so much. But he just has he's got that attitude, man. If you could stay on the field. If, if If everyone can just stay on the field, Carlos Correa comes back, it's going to be good. Last thing I'll say. And I think we're talking about him later. Bailey Ober has been absolutely fantastic. Absolutely fantastic, man. So, yeah, I mean, look, the twins needed this to get Chicago during this 20-game losing streak. But you still got to go take care of business.
Starting point is 00:21:06 And they did it against Crochet as well, even though he went four-earnings pitch one and wrong. They're taking care of business. Everyone's taking care of that. Yeah, but I mean, to sweep, sweep is good. That's what the last... Two or three is like, ah. The last seven teams have done that, right? Yes, they all took care of business against this horrible.
Starting point is 00:21:26 This team is... Jake, I've seen them in person a couple different times, and it's... Fuck, it's tough, man. I feel for him. I really do. Is there anything you can do or say? No. Oh.
Starting point is 00:21:43 You're in that environment and it's just bad. And it's going to feel good to win that first game after 20. You might even celebrate a little bit. And then people are going to get mad at you for celebrating a victory after you just lost 20 in a row. But you show up to the park and you're just, you're defeated. You're defeated. And there's nothing that a coach can say or you can really do. Someone's just got to absolutely dominate and take a game over.
Starting point is 00:22:05 It doesn't seem like they're going to let Crochet do that anymore. I'm assuming they're just going to be really picky with his innings. but somebody's just got to go dominate a game. You got to drive in six or seven runs. You got to DJ to make you it. Like something's got to happen. Three games against Oakland coming up for the White Sox and potentially historic.
Starting point is 00:22:26 I think 23 is the record. They're at 20. The AL records 21. So yeah. It would feel like it'd probably be a nice little morale boost to not make history to say an argument for the worst.
Starting point is 00:22:42 team ever. Go win a ball game. Come on, Lou Bob. Come on, Lou Bob. Let's see. What else in the AL matters at this point? Tampa and Houston. Yep.
Starting point is 00:22:56 I mentioned that last game because, man, rewatching that was a thrill. You forget, when you're a baseball nerd, a one-nothing game. That's that good anxiety. That's every pitch that comes in, every play that has to be. made. And they get it done. Tyler Alexander has been pitching really well for Tampa recently. And yeah, I always think the opener is such an instant winner loss.
Starting point is 00:23:25 And the fact that he comes in, he has to come in in the first inning, which ideally you don't want to do that with your opener. He comes in for our guy John Singleton left on left and gets him with three pitches. Like, that's an instant win. And then Eric Getty and Houston, they've been striking people out and kind of getting the pitching, but this series, they end up falling short to the race who are seven out of ten. And my whole thing going back a month ago was like the names have changed.
Starting point is 00:23:55 They had the injury bug pretty good. I mean, you can't really drink any raise Kool-Aid for the division because the Orioles and Yankees are up there. I guess it's go now because five games out, five games out right now isn't bad because that can turn to three, which turns to one and a half. but you need to cut into that league before you like the math there you like how I did that I don't know what you're talking about I mean I get what you're talking yeah I know I know I get it and sometimes I don't uh I don't know five in August 5th is fine five on September 1st is not fine
Starting point is 00:24:32 so it's you you need to put the gas pedal down now in the series number one awesome debut as you mentioned with Kukuchi, um, 11 freaking Ks and everyone's like, oh yeah, like I'm going to give it a word later about stuff that's obvious, like him coming over and like dealing for the ashes just in hindsight is going to seem so obvious for everybody.
Starting point is 00:24:54 They actually win that first game on a little like kind of like air and your don legging out a freaking or some nice wheels on the base pass. Uh, so good for your don't just getting it done different ways. He's mad at everybody else for being so versatile. He's like, I could do that stuff too. On the raise, though, Pop.
Starting point is 00:25:13 They've been nuts. 10, they've won 10 of the last 13 series. They've only lost one of them. They split the other two. They've won 11 straight rubber match games. Yeah, I saw that. Kind of how you win series. It's kind of how you win series right there.
Starting point is 00:25:33 And then, of course, with all the freaking moves and trading away, your two best relievers, a 278 ERA since the All-Star Break leads the big leagues. And so in the last game, I still don't know how to say this guy's name.
Starting point is 00:25:53 Biggie? I think it's Biggie. I think we assumed it would be bizh or something, but it's Biggie. So you get him. And then, yeah, you mentioned Tyler Alexander. And then it's Edwin, Ucetta, Manuel Rodriguez, and then Pete Fairbanks.
Starting point is 00:26:06 It's like, not all these guys are in my book, but it doesn't matter because they've come up from AAA and just like, sort of the dominate. And that is what we call Ray's going to Ray. Bringing up guys who are just going to be lights out. What do they used to call them back like two years ago? Like an octopus. Oh, the clock?
Starting point is 00:26:29 Yeah, all the different arm angle. The Ray's clock thing? God, was there a graphic shown more? Yeah, just everybody doing that. Yeah, they continue to get the job done, man. I mean, you really can't count the raise out. You know that. Yeah, for me, they're going to pitch.
Starting point is 00:26:48 Tage Bradley has broken out. He won a.O. player of the month. A.O. Pitcher of the month. Jeffrey Springs is back. There, yes. Oh, God. What year was that? This is a World Series.
Starting point is 00:26:59 I did 20 or 21, yeah. That's such a ridiculous. Their offensive numbers on the year are still down. And I mentioned, dude, Josh Lowe, I think he is a stud. He's on my all, like, different pop team. Like, you see what you think is a fly ball, and it's 20 rows deep. So he's there now. Yandi has to leave via injury.
Starting point is 00:27:28 He got off to a really slow start to the season. We'll see if he's okay or not. If the race put up a couple runs, and dude, there's something just, sick about that team, that it's kind of your Corbyn Burns effect. Like, yeah, trade everyone away. We got a new layer of guys you don't want to see. Dylan Carlson had it Homer this year.
Starting point is 00:27:53 First four at-bats with the race. Homer. I want to look up stats because I feel like we should look up. People that have gotten traded, hitters have gotten traded over the last, you know, five years. What do they do in their first? series with the new teams. I feel like there's this crazy adrenaline spike in this like need or
Starting point is 00:28:14 want to you know like quote unquote please your parents, you know, like you want to, you want to show the fan base that you can, hey man, I'm the guy. I got traded from Oakland to Tampa. Hit a homer. I was horrible. Hit a homer my first series against Sinci thought I was back. I wasn't. I was not back. But the first series I had all the juice, bro. Yeah. Yeah, you talked about the raised testosterone or whatever it is. Like, I feel like Chris Morel came over. And again, he had those first couple homers. He hasn't been electric.
Starting point is 00:28:52 But like... For series. Right. For series juice. There's something with the race. I think it's just go do you. Like Chris Morel, I feel like a lot of the talk in Chicago is like, does he have a position?
Starting point is 00:29:04 Can he play third base? And I feel like the race are like, hey, we traded for you. We want you to be you. Go do that. You can see that embodied in Jose Siri any game they play. And maybe that's Dylan Carl Sincini had no homers in St. Louis this year. Talented switch hitter. A guy that, you know, I remember when he first got called up, they were slotting him in the three hole.
Starting point is 00:29:29 And like, they gave him, you can always tell by a prospect, this is a little dumb, but what number you get? Like they thought Dylan They thought Dylan was going to be in the clerk for a while And I wonder Wonder if the Rays go sicko mode on them Houston Justin Verlander throwing a bullpen He says he's going to do two rehab starts
Starting point is 00:29:51 Super interested to see the next storyline with them Because like I said with them in Houston Or with Houston in Seattle It's currently looking like one team's going to win the division And one team is not going to make the dance unless they can chip into that big lead, which while we're there, Seattle, they hold surf. I know the Phillies are struggling right now,
Starting point is 00:30:16 but that's none of their business. They'll see if the Phillies can break out in that last game, but Brian Wu with seven-shot piece. And they're getting offensive contribution, which is the name of the game for the Mariners. Yeah, I mean, if you're a Mariners fan, this series has to feel like so good and relieving. you know the first game it's it's uh luke raleigh the homer was massive yeah third deck i haven't
Starting point is 00:30:42 seen honestly i don't know how many balls have gone up there i haven't seen it's seventh player to reach the upper deck stat sheesh is that on the sheet i need to look at our sheet more i like my own notes and they're all just on the sheet yeah probably just look at the sheet yeah need to figure that one out had a boy um massive homer justin turner hits the guy in the head for a grand slam so you have you know a guy that you that's an awesome video by the way I feel bad for the guy but also like what are you doing like you're at the game.
Starting point is 00:31:11 We're coming your way. That's why I bring a glove people I could have been next to him and just save them. I'm team glove. You've persuaded me. See here's the thing I'm going to the game today Philly's Dodgers. I don't think, can I bring my glove like on the field? If I'm on the field that's kind of. No, you're good.
Starting point is 00:31:33 You played. Have a little catch with someone. what's up what's up you have one back and forth with Trey play catch with a kid if me and Trey just toss a ball back and forth it's just over
Starting point is 00:31:45 what's over you won't be able to say anything to me anyways so yeah second game you come back from a 5-0 deficit and Mitch Hanager is starting to go since the all start break these are all very welcome things
Starting point is 00:32:00 for Seattle fans like yes yes this is what baseball is supposed to look like you know, early on in the season, a five-nothing deficit for the Mariners was death. It's done. The game's over. You bring in JT. You bring in Randy.
Starting point is 00:32:14 You tell the fellas, hey, look, here, we got you some guys. Like, let's go. It's our time. We got this pitching staff. Let's get it. It's got to feel really good. Then you get wheelered the last day.
Starting point is 00:32:25 That's fine. People get wheelered. It's not a big deal. You win the series against the Phillies and you start to go. Like, I'm very happy for Mariners fans. Hanager 965 OPS since the All-Star break Also seven walk-offs Tied with Jim Presley for the most in franchise history
Starting point is 00:32:42 Okay It does seem like he gets a lot of walk-off hits Isn't that funny? It popped up And maybe we'll jump over to my Yanks quick Jazz Chisholm doesn't have a walk-off hit yet He'll get one soon He'll get one soon
Starting point is 00:32:56 Uh Yanks beat Toronto Uh Like that last game was pretty brutal, hour and a half, hour 45 rain delay in the eighth inning on getaway day. You hate to see that. Tide had to finish it. Strowman got rocked in the first game. Aaron Judge, it's like the Otani stuff we joked about before the show. It's almost like we shouldn't talk about them because I don't. Well, we're not going to talk about it because they're just going to walk him now. Is that going to do the
Starting point is 00:33:30 strategy going forward? kind of sucks? It should Team should have no shame in it I think the part with Schneider that was a little weird is A, you know, the Blue J season is heading out of the window
Starting point is 00:33:48 a little bit. It's out of the window, bro. The 10 games under 500. Okay, I came in gentle because I didn't know if you'd be mad about me going the other way. What's, what is, first of all, what is out of the window
Starting point is 00:33:59 no idea? No clue. No clue. is like 500 is that like a win now uh i don't even know if they want that right like they sold like where you can't you can't tank anymore that's i guess like there was one time i think it was two out was it two out spaces empty i think i think i know the very first time they did it with the bases empty was two outs bases empty and they were already down three or four they're down four they were down four and they walked him with two outs bases empty yeah i mean look if you're
Starting point is 00:34:28 like other times they did it in that context made a lot of little more sense, but like, you're mad, but you're also like, I'm like, I'm that guy. There's, I mean, there's times. It's sign of respect. Yes, there are times you should not pitch Darren Judge. And I think teams should come in and pitchers should put their pride away for a little bit.
Starting point is 00:34:50 You know, the, the interesting thing is Austin Wells has been hitting behind them. Rookie lefty catcher who's been hot lately in his numbers from cleanup are great. So as long as that continues. But do you flop Soto and Judge if this continues? You just can't do that? No. The season those two are currently having, you got to leave that lineup.
Starting point is 00:35:12 Boone's in on that. I am too. I think baseball people are. I thought Boone was out against keeping the same lineup. Now he's in on it? He was until we brought it to their... Well, I also think the Yankees were trying to... outsmart lineups because they didn't have
Starting point is 00:35:32 Juan Soto and Aaron Judge. Now that you have those two. This year they've treated batting order very differently than it feels like the prior years. Those two can do anything they want. I don't mean to rain on the parade of the Yankees of a little bit of Stroman since June 6th. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:35:51 Penn game started 632 ERA, 621 FIPP, 919 OPS against. Has it looked as bad as the number? numbers are? Yeah, the sinker Velo is down. It's tough for any non-vilo pitcher these days when you're getting hit. He's got like no strikeouts. Yeah, and his sinker, I think it's like 88, 89, and it's not sinking too much. So he's, he's really trying to nibble and it's, uh, it's tough right now. Him and Nestor have been, have been up against it a little bit. Uh, we'll see. We'll see. Mark Lider Jr., who they added to the bullpen
Starting point is 00:36:30 that we weren't super jazzed up about or a little more jazzed up about. Fun pitcher. A not Velo guy in the beautiful way. A lot of curves, the splitters gross. The Yanks need help in that bullpen. And the brand of baseball just feels so much better. So much better.
Starting point is 00:36:51 Let's see. Rapping up in the AL, Trevor Goof. Red Sox win a series. Royals win a series. Mets and halos, no thanks. Red Sox have a gauntlet coming up. Series wins versus Seattle and now Texas, but they go to Kansas City, then they play Houston and Texas,
Starting point is 00:37:12 so the Texas showdown at home, then they go at Baltimore for four, at Houston for three, then it's Arizona coming into town as well. This is kind of make or break time for Boston. What are they sitting, two and a half back, I said? Two and a half back of the wild card.
Starting point is 00:37:27 Yep, the Royals. I mean, and I guess that is the conversation because that's the team they're currently chasing down. Royals have seemed to lock in again. Although I think they're 500 against non-central teams and they're dominating the central, which, hey, that's... Like you said, Trev, the central has everything.
Starting point is 00:37:47 And I think you're talking about a Royals guy later and I'm talking about a Red Sox guy later? Yeah. Wow. We are. Look at that. New York Mets, a little bit of what is you doing, baby? Just saying.
Starting point is 00:37:58 Yeah. I... A really, really good team. I've been, like, I've been forcing you down. I've been telling a lot of people. This team is really good. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:38:06 See him do it in person. Can't be losing a series to the Angels right now. You just can't. Little West Coast trip can always be tricky. And Ben Joyce throws hard. So, analytics. Treb, let's do a little National League. It's brought to you by Seat Geek.
Starting point is 00:38:25 Wow. Our friends over at Seat Geek. The baseball season is in full swing. And maybe, uh-oh, Trev showing off his seat and the fact he can lift it up. That looks like a nice seat. A little pillow. A leather? It's leather, yeah.
Starting point is 00:38:40 Got a little pillow under my butt. Hmm. Hey, maybe your team traded for a new guy. Go check them out. Maybe your team traded away, guys, and you got some prospects up. Go check them out. Maybe tickets are cheap because your team's out of it. Sometimes that's the best time to go to the stadium.
Starting point is 00:38:57 get some good seats and maybe they'll even be 10% off with code talking 10 off any seat geek tickets download the seekie gap green means good red means not so good uh yellow in the middle so pretty standard uh and code talking 10 whether you've used the code or not with seek geek uh you'll get 10% off your next order go check that out while we check out what happened in the national league And man, those Chicago Cubbies, do they have some fight, Treb? They take three out of four from the Cardinals. Could have been four out of four if they had some better defense in that third game. The Cubs have dominated the Cardinals this year.
Starting point is 00:39:47 Eric Fetty makes his Cardinals debut, five innings, five earned. Tough. We don't love that for him. But, man, they came back in that first game. They've knocked around Ryan Halsley all year. Our guy Pete Crow Armstrong keeps stealing bases and doesn't get caught. That's good for them. And Mike Talkman, every time his wife visits the OBGYN, he homers.
Starting point is 00:40:11 So did I add a letter in there? Cubs, they take three out of four. Maybe we'll talk about that. Maybe you just turned it off. Braves and Marlins split two. After the Braves win the first two, they get the good juice going again, A little windstreet. Charlie Morton, salting him away.
Starting point is 00:40:31 Arcea's starting to bang for them. Miami comes back. They knock around Argy, Max, Freed. He can't get through four. Xavier AdWords slap dicking it all over the yard. Jake, how's your burger with the big homer? Fish split them up. Braves, kind of not out of the woods yet.
Starting point is 00:40:55 Team that is out of the woods. The Arizona Dimebacks. I tried to tell people they haven't lost a series in their last 10, 9-0-1, and that improves after they took down the Pittsburgh Pirates. They even survived Skeen's Day. Dramatic game. Jock Peterson goes Apo Taco off a Holderman after he went in the drink earlier in the series. That guy, man.
Starting point is 00:41:21 Josh Bell, how's your two homers? Welcome to the team. Also the fastest pitch homer down in the trackman error or whatever it is. Pittsburgh won that middle game. Joey Bart continues to do it with Brian Reynolds as well. AJ Puck saves the day in that final game, literally. Coming in, punching O'Neill Cruz's ticket, he had a five-hit game. Some good baseball.
Starting point is 00:41:46 How about that? Pittsburgh and Arizona, you never know. Dodgers, they take two out of three from the Oakland Athletics after they won that. first game. Miguel Anduhar with three hits. Brent Rooker obviously hits a homer because that's all he does. Dodgers, they win the next two. Jack Flaherty, six-inning shut in his Dodger debut. They put up 10 runs there. And then Kike and Kaffin, sure. They do enough for the Dodgers to win the series against the athletics. The San Francisco Giants take down the Cincinnati Reds. Blake Snell,
Starting point is 00:42:25 your no-no. Nine innings pitch, zero hits, zero-run runs, three walks, 11 Ks. He kept some receipts, and he let the people know. He's been shoving recently. Reds, they win that second game. Tyler Stevenson, great series to be named Tyler. Stevenson hits two homers in that second game. Tyler Fitzgerald is basically homering in every game he plays, including the last game that they win eight to two. Robbie Rye, he's back, twirling it for San Francisco. San Francisco just needs like a 200-game season,
Starting point is 00:42:59 and I think we'd be more into them. San Diego, they take two out of three from the rock pile. A little pitchers duel in game two, Tanner, Gordon, and Martin Perez. Sneaky trade ad by San Diego. The Padres, dude, Trev, your guy, Brent Doyle,
Starting point is 00:43:21 He cannot be stopped. But that's all we're talking about with the Rockies, because Higgy has been balling out behind the dish. Pro Far. Crohn's zone, Machado, all with multiple hits. Xander Bogartz has been bawling since his aisle return. And the San Diego Padres keep winning games. Finally, in the National League.
Starting point is 00:43:40 The Nationals take two out of three from the Brew Crew. Okay. Mitchell Parker with a nice start. Travis Blankenhorn. BPD's Travis Blankenhorn. and James Wood just kind of doesn't get out. That's a nice feature. Brewers have sneaky dropped their last three series,
Starting point is 00:43:57 and that's what happened in the National League. You're snakes, man. Okay, snakes. Yeah, big time. We're going to start out out west, Jake, with these standings. The Dodgers lead, only down to four and a half out there, Jake. There's 65 and 47, the Padres, who we compared to Katie Ledecki. Because they're not shredding water.
Starting point is 00:44:23 They're swimming very. There are four and a half games back, 61 and 52. The snakes right behind them at 60 and 52. Five games back of the division. The Giants, one game under 500 at 56 and 57, and then your Rockies, 41 and 72. And the Central, Milwaukee's still maintaining a five and a half game lead, 62 and 49. The Cardinals, 57 and 55, so only two games over 500. The Pirates one game over at 56 and 55.
Starting point is 00:44:52 And then the Cubs and Cinsie, man, I think. the Cubs and CINC were like maybe our favorites to win the division at the beginning of the year. I know it was a big discussion. We didn't really know what was going to happen, but they were definitely supposed to be there. Cubs 55 and 59, 8.5.
Starting point is 00:45:09 games back. In Cincinnati, 53 and 58, 9 games back. Some talent on those rosters, but just not getting the job done. And then out east, Philadelphia, 66 and 45. They have a six-game lead, Jake, over the Atlanta Braves, who are 60 and 51. the Mets five games over 500 at 58 and 53
Starting point is 00:45:28 and then that's they were a fun story I told you they were going to be fun to watch this year but things have gone south for them 51 and 61 10 games under 500 in Miami 42 and 70 with I believe that's the worst record in the National League just right below the Padres or excuse me the Rockies in the wild card Atlanta holding the top spot
Starting point is 00:45:52 their half game up on the Padres who are a half game up on the Diamondbacks. So the AO, excuse me the NOS has three teams currently in the playoffs. And there has been some separation there in the wild card as well. The Mets only a game and a half back, but then it's St. Louis three, Pittsburgh three and a half,
Starting point is 00:46:10 Giants four and a half. Cubs and Sincese six, six and a half games back, respectively. Jake, those are the standings in the National League. Trevor, thank you. Thank you for all you do. including wearing that that jam tie-dye shirt today.
Starting point is 00:46:27 I haven't worn my... Is I wear it to the game? Ooh, you're a tie-dye. You can. I'm either wearing this one or I'm wearing the John Boy Media with like the baseball that's like a person shirt.
Starting point is 00:46:41 Oh, okay. Man, both hit different tones for you. Feel it out. I think I'm going to go this one. The damn I'm going to go this one, just all day. Yeah. Save the earth, bro.
Starting point is 00:46:52 Don't need to wear two shirts. We've only got one planet, you know? I forgot how... There's not true, there's so many planets out there. There's so many planets out there, too. Here we go. Like, the possibilities are kind of infinite for how many planets there really are out there.
Starting point is 00:47:08 Simulation time. You know what? Screw it. I want to start with my D-backs. Oh. Last year's National League champions, people forget. Really clicking. man, Catelle Marte has entered the MVP chat, question mark?
Starting point is 00:47:30 I mean, I know. It's show hey season. Any opportunity, well, A, we talk about trade pieces and feeling the impact. Hey, Josh Bell, who is this? For free. For free, basically. What do they give up for Josh Bell? You got to pay that, man.
Starting point is 00:47:48 Here's two home runs in his Diamondbacks debut. Didn't they just claim them off waivers? Come over. We'll have you. Including off a Chappie, which was the fastest pitch homered off of in the stat cast error? It's a player to be named later.
Starting point is 00:48:06 I'm sorry. Thank you. Since pitch tracking data. Data or data? And then, dude, I get frustrated. I've been doing it on this show. Jack Peterson should have had a more, a higher-bitted free agency.
Starting point is 00:48:22 and I guess maybe he will this time he has a mutual option for 14 mil but you go look at guys OPSs around the league and Jack Peterson starts getting into rare air and he hits one into the drink which I believe he was the 50th player to do that and then he goes Apo Taco off a Colin Holderman who's one of the better set up guys in the league
Starting point is 00:48:48 he has been struggling recently a 931 OPS for John The snakes are clicking. There's some different butter knife stats that you can snake up. I think since Pardomo's been back, their record's really good, which again, it's a piece of the pie. But them and the Padres are like the two sexiest teams in the National League for the past, I don't know, three weeks, month?
Starting point is 00:49:17 Yeah, they've been really, really good. And just an example of what they can do. In the first inning of the first game, Darrell, inside the park Little League Homer. So it's got triple, runs it down, and then back to back to back. That's what we're doing. I don't know if you read that.
Starting point is 00:49:36 It wasn't really paying attention to you, but it's the most total bases from the first four hitters, like ever. I mean, it's got to be, right? Well, those three, four, four, four. Pretty awesome. We've got room for one more. Got room for one more.
Starting point is 00:49:52 15 out of 16 possible total bases they had in the first four. Where's my notes? Oh, great battle for the pirates to actually come back. And then it's the Josh Bell Homer against Eraldus, which is awesome because it's both sides of the plate. Oppo Homer, you know, it's a pretty thing when you pick up a guy for nothing. And he comes over and provides middle of the order offense because, hey, you just lost your guy, Christian Walker, who was a big part of your team. and you just get this guy off the scrap pile and he's filling in beautifully?
Starting point is 00:50:25 Like, what are we doing here, man? And he did. He did that when he joined the Marlins. Why didn't, like, Houston needs a first baseman. Like, shout out John Singleton, but you can platoon. Where were they at? There's a bunch of guys that needed first baseman.
Starting point is 00:50:42 Was Arizona just higher on the pecking order? Is that how it works, right, with the waivers? I mean, it's supposed to, oh, there is some weird ALNL stuff, right? Remember, we got into the weed. with this one. I now forget if the opposite league gets first crack. But they did trade something for him so that that superseded all the waiver stuff. So maybe they would have been willing to just take them.
Starting point is 00:51:04 No, you have to claim. And then you have a period of time to work out a deal. You don't just claim them when you get them. So that's what happened. I don't know the way the waiver works. I think they could still do a different trade. They don't technically like waver snack him. Like it's a trade.
Starting point is 00:51:21 Like anyone could have trained You claim him And then you have a period of time To work out a trade to keep him I don't think so Because if you They can actually take him back off of waivers If they wanted to
Starting point is 00:51:34 We're gonna get our front office I don't know the logistics of who It used to be worst record down I don't know if it's the same way Which would mean that yeah The Diamondbacks probably would have First go I just read the standings
Starting point is 00:51:49 Get in the comments The fact that they got him And he's producing is awesome for the snakes. Not that they really needed it. We're going to have that waiver deadline again? That'll be fun. Yeah. I mean, Kevin Pilar making diving catches for the angels. It's like, what? And then for the snakes to win that last game, you know, a huge deficit. Skeen's Day.
Starting point is 00:52:10 They decided to pitch to Peterson instead of bringing in a lefty, maybe having Lebello make a move there and Jack, it's the homer. Like, these are massive games, you know. We talk about, Desperation August, the snakes are feeling great. I don't think it's desperation for them. I just think that they're hitting their stride. For the pirates, I think it is desperation time. They've got to start going.
Starting point is 00:52:35 But man, it's just been, like I'm going to do an award later about things that are obvious. Like the snakes getting going in the second half once they started to get healthy. It's kind of obvious. Once Corby and Carroll started going a little bit, he hasn't even really. like done what he needs to do. If he starts going crazy, then watch out. I think we got our guy Erod coming back, a big Guardian series. So yeah, I mean, I, Trev, I don't know happy flight watch and how much it matters, but winning your six straight series, winning, not having lost the series out of 10 and surviving a Skeen's Day,
Starting point is 00:53:19 getaway day, I mean, that's, that feels like a happy. happy flight. I also want to give a shout out to one Pittsburgh pirate because this guy gets no love and I saw him pitch in person and I was like, this guy's freaking good. It's Luis Ortiz. Okay. He kind of got banged up in this game, but then he settled down. Go look at the numbers on the year, dude. He's kind of, he'll like spot start. They'll do openers for him, like whatever it is. He kind of pitches in a bunch of different capacities. He even has a save on the year, but three, two, one ERA. Yeah. He's got the stuff, man. He really, really has a It's location base for him when he starts to go awry a little bit.
Starting point is 00:53:56 But he can be a guy. And he gets obviously, you know, they have three guys ahead of him, maybe even four guys ahead of him that, you know, you talk about. But this guy has big time potential. 25 years old. Just throwing that out there. Just throwing that out there. I think he gets hurt a little bit.
Starting point is 00:54:14 We did this. There was another Luis Ortiz that got caught up a couple years ago that wasn't that good. Are he still? he's still around the league. He got called up by the Phillies this year once and got hit. So that's tough. It's hard to click on this Louis Sortez.
Starting point is 00:54:32 You can't even find his stat page on Savant. That's how like under the radar this guy is. So just remember who told you about him first. Like this guy could be a starter for them next year and you're looking up and he's like their fourth starter or fifth starter has a two ERA? What's he's an all-star?
Starting point is 00:54:50 He has that stuff people. These pirates can pitch, bro. You mentioned... You can find them by Luis L. Ortiz and get to his savant. That's a tough middle. Thank you. I've been trying to get to it, Bees, I need that.
Starting point is 00:55:03 Tough middle initial for a pitch. I was surprised it worked. You have that. Like that. Thank you. Speaking of desperation, the Cardinals and the Cubs played four that ends up on Sunday night baseball.
Starting point is 00:55:17 Nice series for the Cubbies. They, uh, let me see if I can find. the numbers here. But they have beat down on the Cardinals this year. If there's a go time from any of the central teams, I'll be honest, I've written off, that they are fourth win in five games,
Starting point is 00:55:38 Justin Steele with a good start. Like I said, your guy, PCA is doing some Stolen Bay stuff. And then, as we're doing all the trade, follow-up stuff, and I should have met, ICF with Pittsburgh, gave them a couple nice swings, the other day. Fetty gets his first Cardinal start, five innings five earn. That's his season high.
Starting point is 00:55:58 So that's a bad feeling. And I don't know. It feels like they have Halsley's number, which that's got to be a bad feeling when you normally, you know, your guy, you're giving the ball. Well, depends what side you're on. If you're on the Cub side and you think you've got that in the chamber, that feels pretty good.
Starting point is 00:56:16 Okay, how did we get this note about Mike Talkben and wife? It's analytics, man. I think he talked about it. Okay. Yeah, he brought it up. That wasn't me just on the beat there. Cubs in Desperation Days, 16 and 11 since July 4th.
Starting point is 00:56:37 They've had some good series as of late. They beat Kansas City on the road. They swept Baltimore. Now they take three or four from the Cardinals. Like, is it a little... What's that saying? Too little, too late? A little, too little, too late.
Starting point is 00:56:53 a little too little you don't need the first little he and hap has to get out of the last game because he heard his shoulder jumping into the brick wall that you have in rigley i still we can keep the ivy can't we just like throw a pad behind there i'd like to think so
Starting point is 00:57:10 ivy i think can grow on anything i don't think it has to be brick we can know that probably we paint the wall the pads like brick oh i'm just saying i mean we don't have to have a brick wall people. Just saying, didn't they pad the bottom of the green monster? They didn't. No. We should probably do that too. Yeah. Still out there. Why not? What are we doing? Okay. That's my analytics. The green monster hard? There's a little give to it, but yeah, it's hard. I mean, it's metal. It's like a metal sheet.
Starting point is 00:57:49 There's a random ladder. I still can't explain it. The ladder's good. It's great. Let's get more ladders in baseball. What's going on there? It's mostly out of the way. Something funny could happen. Cubby's got the buzzsaw of your twins coming up. I mean, Dansby's got to be on egg shelves. You know, his wife's playing
Starting point is 00:58:10 for medals across the pond. Across the pond. You like that? You didn't say it in the right voice. Across the pond. There you go. Well, it's going to go French and then, I don't know. My French accent gets offensive. What else you want in the NL Trev. I'm a little doing what's matters right now. And like, I guess the Braves kind of looked like
Starting point is 00:58:35 they were, they were out of their swoon. And then dropping those final two games to Miami and the fact that Freed comes back and he doesn't look sharp. Still a lot of questions in Atlanta, which is just surprising in August. We thought, I think I was looking at some of the old Draft King's numbers. I think they were minus 700 to win the NL East this year. Yes, and they're only a game and a half. I mean, yeah, they could be out of the playoff race at any given series now. I think that's the scariest part. You know, coming into July, you know, they had a decent size cushion in the wild card race.
Starting point is 00:59:18 And now it's all but gone. And yeah, like they have to go. Like they are going to, for the first time since I can't even, I don't even know when, they're going to have to play games with, you know, some feeling in August and September, like games that will make or break a season. I mean, I'm trying to think of the ones the last time the Braves had to really sweat out September. Yeah, I mean, they caught the Mets in...
Starting point is 00:59:47 But they were going to make the wild card. Right. Like, they were just... They weren't sweating. They were just hunting. They weren't sweating. Yeah, they were hunting. So it's been a while for them to be in this.
Starting point is 00:59:56 position. It could be good for them. Hasn't been a lot of date my daughter this year. They, uh, that Braves offense, man. Are you, you're taking her away because they've been struggling at the plate a little bit? Well, you mentioned when you put together your list, you know, everything's a factor, you know?
Starting point is 01:00:15 Everything's a factor. Age, looks, height, performance, contract, uh, everything's a factor. And right now, dude, the Braves offense, 23rd in runs? The Atlanta Braves? Mm-hmm. That's just, that ain't right. That ain't right, man. Who do they got?
Starting point is 01:00:38 They've got Milwaukee coming up, who Milwaukee is on a little cooler right now, too. So that'll be one of those teams. They'll walk away feeling pretty good. And then the Braves have a West Coast trip. So, I don't know. That N.O. Wild card, man. There was
Starting point is 01:00:55 It's going to be tight A couple early months It didn't look like that Was going to be anything And now it's one of the stories Of the season I want to talk about giants But I want to talk about that one guy
Starting point is 01:01:09 You will You will I will Anything else here, Trev Do we keep it boot scooting? I think Dodgers and Padres Take care of business Yeah
Starting point is 01:01:22 That's I'm hoping that race gets a little bit closer. That would be a lot of fun. San Diego four and a half games back. I don't know how many games I have left against the Dodgers. I'm going to find that out.
Starting point is 01:01:33 Hey, don't leave the snakes in that convo, bro. I agreed, I agreed, agreed. I'm just three games set at the end. I remember that. The Podgers have on the road in L.A. And then they end with the snakes. It'll be really fun ends of the season. N.L. West?
Starting point is 01:01:56 Erod, Trev, let's get to the second half of the show, including standout performances. Standout performances are brought to you by our Dan Patrick partnership. How do you like that? John Boy Media and IHeart Podcasts have teamed up. Two of your favorite Johnboy Media shows can be found over at the Dan Patrick Show. Wake and Jake, me and BBD, talking sports, a lot of ball. Jimmy's Three Things have joined IHart Podcasts.
Starting point is 01:02:26 and the Dan Patrick show family. And the best part, they still continue to be the same shows you know and love. This has been really exciting for us. We get to say we're partnered with Dan Patrick. He's introduced us to like a whole new audience, which is really cool. So thank you, Daniel, and go check that out.
Starting point is 01:02:45 Who's your standout, Trout? My standout is, first of all, shout out, Tyler Fitzgerald. I feel like we never mentioned him and he just has like a one dot through 50 games. It's going nuts. Look at it at Shortstop. Love that.
Starting point is 01:02:56 for you. My standout, Jake, is going to, I think one of your favorite players in the game, Ketel Marte? Yeah. Who on Friday, he had two homers against the pirates, drove in two runs, so both solo shots there. But the numbers on the year are just
Starting point is 01:03:12 exceptional. Silly. Like, you know, a guy that can kind of do it all. 27 jacks, I didn't know he had that until I looked at the numbers. So the power's there. He's slugging 533. He's got 919 OPS, an OPS plus of 156 plus. Jake, he's got 5.8
Starting point is 01:03:27 baseball reference war already this year. 77 runs, 77 runs driven in, just really having an exceptional season and that extension that he signed last year looks really, really good. Five years, 76 million, so
Starting point is 01:03:44 quick math, what is that, 13 million a year? No idea. Maybe a little bit more. That's not right. Just lost that one. He's a stud. Yeah. It's an absolute stud. I love watching it. can play. Again, he can kind of play anywhere if need be and can do anything on the field.
Starting point is 01:04:03 And he's a switch hitter. So like, what do you going to do? He's been one of the best players in the National League. The war is starting to get up there. And again, what could turn into a fun conversation down the stretch, you know, if one of these position players ends up with eight or nine war and Shohei can't get there because he is hitting only, I don't know. It could lead to an interesting MVP conversation. The Show Hay story, he's still, I think he still heads above it. He's 30-30 right now. My God.
Starting point is 01:04:38 33 homers and 31 sole bases. I don't know. Especially depending on how the Dodgers season finishes, will any of these NOS teams hunt them down? And then if, I don't know if someone like, if Cattel Marte balls out, he ends up with a higher war, and the snakes are near around the Dodgers, it should be more of a conversation than it probably will be?
Starting point is 01:05:07 I don't want to do this, but Seattle, who traded him away early on in his career, would really have like to have him at second base right now. I'm just saying. I know it doesn't work that way. We can't go down that road. It was a long time. It was eight years ago. Extensions.
Starting point is 01:05:22 Come on. Just saying. No way. Gene Seguerra had a couple of nice years for Seattle. Sure did. Nice career. That's fine. He did have a nice career. And they did have a nice career.
Starting point is 01:05:32 And they're first round they loved. Trev, I'm going to Blake Snell. Giants fans, yeah, sorry. We got through your series quick, and I'm glad you mentioned Tyler Fitzgerald because he's just going insane. Just a one-dotting shortstop. Where are you from?
Starting point is 01:05:51 Late night, Lamont in the afternoon. Matt Chapman making game-saving bare hands. But I'm talking about Blake Snell, who, man, it would have been really interesting to see if this start happened a week earlier. Blake Snell, no hitter, nine innings, zero hits, three walks, 11Ks. You know, he heard everyone talking about he doesn't go into the eighth or ninth inning. He does that.
Starting point is 01:06:18 He was in our comments fighting people about the new NCAA football game. He likes what he likes. Hello, my apologies. The software glitched on me. You have missed one sentence. The next sentence, Jake says, is Blake Snell has been better in the second half of his career every season. Back to Jake. Every year.
Starting point is 01:06:37 Not one year. Was there a, oh, he had one seven earn run game and that screwed up his ERA. Every year. And Blake Snell, since he's come off of the I.L. July 9th. Five start. 33 innings. pitched 41 strikeouts, a 055 ERA.
Starting point is 01:07:00 This was a guy that got involved in trade rumors. Supposedly the big boys were in because Snell does have a big boy contract. And it would have been very interesting. He has a $30 million player option that everyone assumed because Snell was injured this year and not performing well, that Snell was going to pick up his player option. be back. If Snell keeps cruising to the finish line, that could be off the table. And or, you know, Trev, we talk about trades and agents and how you could figure stuff out.
Starting point is 01:07:38 I wonder if, you know, if Snell's agent had agreed for him to opt into next year, which again, about a week ago seemed very in play, if not standard. If he could be pitching on a different contender right now, but he's still, in San Francisco. He's mowing people down. And no hitters. I mean, him and Cease in the same like week, and that's where we kind of, no hitters aren't as sexy as they kind of used to feel. They're still sexy. But Snell's sexy. It's sexy. 113 pitches. It had to face Elie LaCruz for the last out,
Starting point is 01:08:14 get some, I believe, on an O.O. Fastball to fly out. Love this post game. Love everything about it. Love that the Giants, you know, know, have, you know, Logan Webb goes nine shutout two. Like they, they, it seems to me that the giants have a team that can win, but they just don't win enough. Like they are a straight up 500 ball club. Like they, the months have, have proven that. They've had a few game, a few months where they've been a few games over 500,
Starting point is 01:08:45 and a few months where they've been a few games under 500. They are just straight in the middle, man. And I don't know what they can do to separate themselves. I don't know what it is. I mean, get healthy. You can say that about every single team. Every time we mention somebody's health, all 29 other teams,
Starting point is 01:09:02 like, well, our team also went through injuries, and they're right. Like, every team deals with injuries, I guess some more than others, but this Giants team, to me, is like, I just, I don't know what it is. Like, what can put them over the hump? And it is probably too little too late.
Starting point is 01:09:18 I think they're four and a half games back of a wildcard spot now, so they could go on a heater and get it done. but I don't know what the difference of you. You have a guy like Tyra Fitzgerald coming up and doing what he's done, you know, through 50 games. Like that should be something that puts you over the hump, but it's just they can't win enough baseball games.
Starting point is 01:09:38 They've got a big case of the wrong division right now. You know, think about how much we oozed about the debacks this episode. Is that all it is? Think about how much we've oozed about the Padres, the last couple episodes, and those teams are still a, A step below the Dodgers. It's tough.
Starting point is 01:09:56 So they're 500 against San Diego and Arizona combined, obviously. Sure. They're 3 and 4 against Arizona, 4 and 3 against the Padres. Against the Dodgers, they're 4 and 9. So there's 5Ls right there. But, I mean... Yeah. Yeah, they...
Starting point is 01:10:16 10 and 3 against Colorado, so you can't talk about their division. I don't know, man. I mean, I don't mean... There are two games over 500 in their division. I don't mean actually facing... those teams, I just mean in the standings. They're getting, looking up seeing three teams above you, and all three teams have, like, I wouldn't say the Dodgers have good momentum right now necessarily,
Starting point is 01:10:42 but like they're expecting to get Mookie Betts back. Like we've talked everything with the Dodgers, and they are the Dodgers. They've been the class of the division while the Diamondbacks are surging, and so are the Padres. It's just, I don't know. And it also... Extra inning games are 5 and 5. One run games are 17 and 15.
Starting point is 01:11:00 It's just all like... Yeah. Have something you excel at. And maybe it's going to be their pitching the second half. Like you said, Webb, Snell, Ray, Harrison, Hayden Show Me Your Bird Song.
Starting point is 01:11:14 I mean... Go nuts, Giants. Make us talk about you because we want to. Trev, this was tough because, I mean, we could have talked about your guy,
Starting point is 01:11:26 Jack Flaherty's debut. Hunter Green with a great start for Cincinnati. His season numbers are very impressive. Gunner, always. Bligh Madras. Madris. And the Detroit win goes nuts. That's right.
Starting point is 01:11:42 He's a big boy. Sure is. Rob Reff Snyder. Is he like the best player? You put a lefty on the mound? Yes. Rob Reff Snyder will smack you around the yard. Trev, can you do the best segment on our show?
Starting point is 01:11:56 Dirt Nasty's on Fuego That means I'm on fire, baby, like Waco Enfuego brought to you by Corona Extra And we will have our Corona Extra player of the app But first, we're going to start out with a series InFuego Guy That didn't make any sense We're going to start out with a series guys
Starting point is 01:12:19 Corey Seeger in his series Went 5 for 12 with three homers, four runs driven in for the 1.5. Anthony Volpe. What's up, Dog? Post All-Star break, Anthony Volpe. It's what everyone's saying. Six for 13 in a series against the J's, two homers, five runs driven in, a stolen base and four runs scored. He's sitting 359 with five homers, 12 runs driven in, 12 runs scored since the All-Star break. So good for him.
Starting point is 01:12:45 Willie Castro, hey, struggling for a little bit. He's back. Six for 14 in the series against the White Sox, a double a home run, seven runs driven in. Three runs score with a walk. All-Star. Willie Castro and also the Hart and Hustle Award winner for the Minnesota Twins. I voted for it. Wow. I have a vote in that. You have a vote? Yeah. I voted for Willie. It's only for the twins. I don't vote for anybody else.
Starting point is 01:13:11 Who votes? I'm not really sure. Okay. Special people. For the week, Jake. Josh Naylor. You and him. A couple beers. Just like an empty room. What would happen? What would happen? Fight to the death, probably.
Starting point is 01:13:29 10 for 23 in the week, a double two home runs, eight runs driven in, seven runs scored, two walks for the 1.2. How about Santiago Espinal of Cincinnati Reds? He went 9 for 18. That's a 500 average, three doubles, two homers, three runs driven in, and two stolen bases. How about Jackson Holiday? Yeah. Let's go. Seven for 18 on the call-up, a double, two home runs, seven runs driven in, five runs scored, two walks.
Starting point is 01:13:57 his first time he got called up, he was two for 34, Jake, 59 average, 059 average, excuse me, with a 170 OPS. He had two singles, 18 strikeouts over 10 games this time around. He's looking a little bit more comfortable out there, Jake, and you got to love that. And for the two weeks, I mentioned this guy before, Bailey freaking over has been absolutely nasty. Three games started, 22 innings pitch, only seven hits, four earned runs, 22Ks for the 164.5.1.1.4.1 whip over his last eight starts. He's six and one, 55 and a third innings pitch for a 195 and a 0.74 whip. 63 case.
Starting point is 01:14:36 His 0.74 whip in that span is the best in majorly baseball and his six wins are tied for the most in majorly baseball. He's been a weapon. There's been a talk. Will he start game one of a playoff series over a Pablo or a Joe Ryan? We don't know yet. We don't know yet. And last, before we get to our Corona Extra player of the ab, Andrew Nardi, a pitcher
Starting point is 01:14:56 that the Marlins didn't. ship out probably should have uh six games uh four hold six things pitch zero hits zero earned runs 12 k's in those six innings and only three walks that's a zero er a and a point five whip and now for that guy that just did a little extra mcansas city first basement viny pascantino yes 21 for 55 over the last two weeks two doubles four four homers, 16 runs driven in, eight runs scored for a 1.05. He said, Trev, why are you giving this guy your Corona Extra player of the app? It's just because one time Jake didn't know who he was and now have a funny relationship?
Starting point is 01:15:41 No, it's not. It's not why. I'm doing it. He's one of the best hitters with runners in scoring position in 2024. He's got 66 runs driven in with runners and scoring position. It's the most in Major League Baseball. He's sitting 360 with runners in scoring position. It's the fourth best in baseball.
Starting point is 01:15:59 It's been a big reason why teams like the Royals and the Guardians have been able to maintain their record because they hit with runners and scoring position, you have to have guys that do it. And Vinny has been that guy for the Royals. So he gets our Corona Extra player of the yet. Stamps for Vinny. I love Vinny P.
Starting point is 01:16:18 Most RBI with runners in scoring position, that's... Well, Bobby Witt, thank you for your legs, play. Yeah, that also helps. Thank you to Corona Make sure you guys get years at order Corona.com. 21 plus relaxed responsibly. Corona extra beer
Starting point is 01:16:34 Import by Crown Imports. There's a link in the description. It's Corona people. I had a discussion on Brian Dozier one time. You scored 100 runs and I was hitting like third or fourth in the lineup at the time. I said, hey, Doge, you're welcome. You scored 100 runs. I've been driving you in.
Starting point is 01:16:49 He goes, no, you're welcome. I'm getting on base and you're driving me in. So you get those runs driven in. I'm like, Who's right in the situation? Think about it. Think about it. I try not to get in between you and Dozier.
Starting point is 01:17:06 Any P going nuts in the second half? I love it. And dude, good for him. I mean, tough baseball injury. He's back. The Royals. The Royals have fooled made us look like fools. That they are in the playoff picture right now.
Starting point is 01:17:23 And man, they added at the day. deadline. Who do they got coming up? Ooh, big Boston series. Okay. We'll playoff baseball. That was kind of, dude, snakes pirates. That final inning. AJ Puck comes in to clean up the mess,
Starting point is 01:17:40 the guy they just traded for, big series for both these teams fighting for the wild card. Boston and KC. All right. Let's find out. Let's find out. Amazing stuff.
Starting point is 01:17:55 Trevor, glad the nightmare Bailey Ober got brought up. The I.L. report, high and tight. We like that. Placed on the IL, things of notes around the league. Luis Renhifo, who a lot of teams want around the deadline. He goes to the I.L. Drew Thorpe, the Thorpeedo. Been pitching decently for the White Sox.
Starting point is 01:18:17 Mad Max Scherzer for Texas. E. He. Michael Siani for St. Louis covering ground. He had a hot streak, too. Gregory Santos in Seattle's bullpen. Forget if I mentioned that. Their bullpen's been getting hit just a little bit recently, one of their strengths. Returning from the IL. Max Fried, we mentioned that.
Starting point is 01:18:37 IKF for a new team. Parker Meadows. Supposed to be part of the Young Corps for Detroit. Finish up to your season, Strong, Kid. Let's finish up this show, Strong, and start everyone's week. Treb? Let me get my paper. Oh.
Starting point is 01:18:59 I am giving out the stuff that just makes sense award and sometimes Jake as you wander through this thing we call life whether you believe we're here by divine intervention whether you believe it's a simulation
Starting point is 01:19:17 there are just some things that you may not pay attention to but then when they get brought to your attention you're just like oh that just makes sense I get that I have a couple of them for you. I'm going to go high and tight with this. Nothing too crazy. Do you know it's called metal because it's harder than rock music? Like metal, it's just a little harder than rock music,
Starting point is 01:19:44 so that's what they call it metal. That makes sense, right? Okay. I mean, once you explained it, at first I thought we were talking about just metal, why metal was named metal. Yeah, I don't know I don't know. Don't get me started there. Okay. The music thing makes sense. I like that. Yeah, it's harder than rock.
Starting point is 01:20:04 You really don't think about this, but this also makes sense. The division symbol, you know, line, two dots. It's just a fraction, and the two dots are the numbers that you're supposed to plug in. Okay. So it's just the division symbol is just a fraction. That's how you do division. It's actually a fraction, whatever it is. That makes sense.
Starting point is 01:20:25 The X doesn't make sense. Is the X symbolic of something? Multiply? It's just like the addition sign turned to the side a little bit. So don't love that one. But the division symbol I'm into, makes sense, right? Yeah. Okay.
Starting point is 01:20:41 How about this one? I actually really like this one. The only part of your reflection, your reflection that you can lick is your tongue. Interesting. Think about that one. It's all I'm going to be able to think about for a while. go up to the mirror, try to lick your elbow. Right.
Starting point is 01:21:04 You're just going to lick your tongue. You lick your elbow. All right. All right. Okay. Not going to fight that. The last one I'm going to give you is that Hunter Fieri's life is amazing. And that's because he's Guy Fierre's son.
Starting point is 01:21:21 I sent you a picture of Guy Fierre hanging out with the Olympics. It's John Travolta. It's Sasha Baron Cohen. Yeah. Another chef. I think. And you commented on John Travolta's new look. You don't like it.
Starting point is 01:21:34 He does seem like a villain now. He used to be a pretty boy. Right. Now he just looks like a villain. I guess that's the thing for me. Travolta's gone full head shaved beard. Which, I don't know. I mean, it's a look and I think it ages well.
Starting point is 01:21:48 Like, if you wear that look well, which Travolta, I think, is gonna. Like, you can write. He's like known for his hair, man. Right. That's what I'm saying. And, like, there's so many, like, good fake hair solutions these days. I would have assumed Travolta would go that way, but... All right, so let's get to the meet of the award.
Starting point is 01:22:07 Who's going to get this things that are obvious award? Go try to lick your reflection. I'm just saying. I hope everyone tries that today. Things that are obvious are that Ben Joyce is becoming a dominant reliever for the angels. That's... When you really think about it, it's obvious. Since June 14th, Jake, that's 18 games.
Starting point is 01:22:31 22 and 2 thirds innings pitch He gives eight hits and no earned runs 20 Ks. That's an ERA of zero A batting average of 110 Slugging percentage of 123 For an OPS of 368 Why is it so obvious Trev well his fastball velo is the 100th percentile
Starting point is 01:22:50 He throws the ball very very hard He's got extension It's a weird arm angle It just makes sense that this guy was going to figure it out He's 23 years old. Everyone remembered him from Tennessee, you know, making his debut. Obviously, he's going to be a little bit wild with his pitches. And before he really was only throwing a four-scene fastball,
Starting point is 01:23:12 it makes sense that in today's day and age, Jake, they would tinker a little bit with pitch mix, with arm slot, with mechanics to get this guy loaded up. So as much as we're focused on a Mason Miller and maybe even a Yoan Duran, like this guy is of the same ilk. and for a while we just really haven't talked about him. He's on the Angels. I get that, but he got his first save.
Starting point is 01:23:35 And now I think the bandwagon is open. Jump on it with me if you want. It's very obvious that this guy was going to be good. What did he change? Well, last year he threw almost 80% of his pitches as a foreseamer. He just was trying to throw it by people. And the Angels were like, hey, guess what everyone's doing now? It's cutting edge.
Starting point is 01:23:54 They're throwing a sinker. So now he throws 43% of his pitchers. as a four-seem fastball, and 36% of them as a sinker. So just make it move a little bit. His average velocity on his sinker is 97 miles an hour. The average velocity on his fastball, four-seem fastball? 102. Seems like that guy's going to be a good pitcher at the big level.
Starting point is 01:24:17 He got rid of his sweeper, which I love. He's out on the sweeper. So cutting-edge technology says sweepers are out, sinkers are in. Love that for everybody. Throwing his slider 18% of the time. He's got a change of your throws every once in a while. but this guy is going to be a lockdown reliever. And how many chances is he going to get for saves with the Angels over the next couple of years?
Starting point is 01:24:38 I don't know, man. He's probably not going to rack up those numbers, but his savant page is going to light it up. He'll probably be an all-star at some point. And it's just really obvious when you kind of just think about his arsenal and what he brings to the table. So he gets my stuff that just makes sense award. Ben Joyce is going to be one of the better relievers in all baseball next year.
Starting point is 01:24:59 I like it, Tref, a long way to get there for, for Euse, but I like it. I'm going to try to lick myself later, not opposed to most Eves. No, man, you know, we like trying to highlight the players of the game. And dude, how cool is it, you know, haven't been a ton of exciting Angels A series. But if I told you you're going to a game or you're going to watch it, in the ninth inning, there's a good chance next year you're going to see one of the the best closers in baseball. It's pretty sick.
Starting point is 01:25:34 You're going to see a guy throw harder than you've probably ever seen a guy throw. That's cool. Good little AL West rubbish. Yes. And dude, we've also seen teams form. Baseball moves quick that, you know, having a nice closer, you know, another guy clicks in the bullpen. Now you've got a good bullpen.
Starting point is 01:25:54 Now, hey, we're scoring a couple runs. We're up in the fifth. We're winning games. I don't know if either of those franchises will be feeling that soon, but pretty cool what they've got going on in the back end. Ben Joyce. I mean, the Angels did have a good closer until the deadline. It still didn't really make a difference,
Starting point is 01:26:14 but I know what you're saying. Stack those guys up on top of each other instead of trading them. And you kind of have what the Cleveland Guardians have done all year. Draft all pitchers. They did that. They did that. Was he part of that draft? He might have been that one.
Starting point is 01:26:27 He might have been, yeah. And I don't know what I had him up. What rounds he drafted in? Third round at Tennessee. And I believe there's some funny business with his background. Like him and his brother were just like, hey, let's just try to throw as hard as we can. Like, who cares?
Starting point is 01:26:41 Like, that's just, that's what we're going to do. And here we go. 6.5-225, throwing missiles from a weird arm angle. It's obvious. It just makes sense, Jake. Just makes sense. Trevor, I'm kind of going the same, same but different. I'm going with the higher power award.
Starting point is 01:27:01 And it's a little bit of a double on Tandra because I'm going with my guy on the Red Sox, Willier-A-Brey you. I mentioned him on the way through. Sox fans, you're probably mad. I didn't talk about them more up at this point. There's probably people who already commented. These guys.
Starting point is 01:27:19 Man, our guy, Willier, A, he's been going off past few games. Five for 11, three homer, seven RBI. A part of that finishes with a two-homer game Yesterday, Sunday. And there's a couple things. First multi-homer game. First homer off a lefty. Boston's been protecting him in the platoon pretty significantly as a lefty hitter.
Starting point is 01:27:46 And they cut to him and he's like, he's kind of balling his eyes out on the field. It turned out his, he had a grandparent pass away. before the game. And, you know, they interviewed Kora afterwards. And he's like, yeah, it was something we kind of knew that they were in bad health, but we, I don't think he told the team. I don't think he wanted to put that on the team.
Starting point is 01:28:12 So that when they saw him crying and break down, they were like, oh, damn. Like, that's, something's up there. And, yeah, his, his grandparent had passed. And, yeah, I don't know. We see a lot of dumb stuff happen in this game. Sometimes maybe we draw too many things or we want to point at something, but pretty nuts that on the day that happens, that Willi or Brayu, who also go check out the stat page,
Starting point is 01:28:39 has been nothing but good at the Major League level. I think 131 OPS Plus, he did a little bit of that in his sampling last year. I think he's a top five rookie of the year guy. Yeah, to have that happen. First multi-homer game. First homer off a lefty. Some stuff can't fully be explained, but it'll be a memory forever.
Starting point is 01:29:07 And good for young Willier. I guess sad, but good for young Willier. I love watching that dude play baseball. You know, from the first time I saw him make, you know, I think there was a week where he made like two or three just crazy diving catches out there in a very difficult right field to play. in Fenway. And I was like, who is this guy? Then you look at his batting stash. Like,
Starting point is 01:29:31 this guy's getting it done. You look at, he's got, you know, 100 percentile arm strength from the outfield as well. Like there's, he's running and diving into the stands. He's just been like an excellent ballplay. One of the reasons the Red Sox are, you know, still in contention is guys like him having years like they have had. So I love that for him. Definitely sorry about, sorry about that. We have had some other instances of that. So if you believe in that thing, which I kind of do, remember Dee Gordon with the homo after Jose Fernandez, Tyler Skaggs, The Angels threw a combined no hitter,
Starting point is 01:30:08 the first game back in Anaheim after he passed. Like there are some things. My grandpa passed away on my mom's side. My grandpa passed away the next day at my first ever career Grand Slam. What's up? I don't know. Thanks, Grandpa, Tom. Appreciate that.
Starting point is 01:30:25 Thank you, Grandpa Tom. Thank you everyone for tuning in. We covered a lot today. A lot of ball, a little bit of religion. Politics next episode. Yeah, stock market. Our politics. All J.M.
Starting point is 01:30:42 That's right, people. It's obvious. We started lobbying in the comments. Jake sucks. I forgot we got all J.M. It's getting down to it. The Daisies are there for the taking. Bobby Witt.
Starting point is 01:30:57 Gunner. And Joyce? No. Good year Love you guys
