Starting point is 00:00:00 Hello and welcome to talking baseball. One game, and the Phillies did Phillies things. They win 6'1. Hey, snakes are coming. We're okay, right? It's okay, right? Lordus Guriel check swing. Hello and welcome to talking baseball, presented to you by Seat Geek.
Starting point is 00:00:35 Make sure you are using code Johnboy playoffs. You're going to save 10% in our live chat tonight. We had a bunch of people that were just like, oh, I got something I'm going to next week. Like, I'm going to use that. They did. Johnboy playoffs 10% off. Seekykeek.
Starting point is 00:00:51 John Boy post season. See, oh, my God, it's got it on this sheet differently. Really? Yes. Wow. Okay. Johnboy post it. We had a big debate on the stream.
Starting point is 00:01:02 Hold on. Be your check that sheet. I don't know. No, no. We're going to be lying right now. I got you, Trep, because we had a debate during tonight's stream. Playoffs are postseason. We'll get there.
Starting point is 00:01:12 in a second. This is code Johnboy postseason. Save yourself 10% off your next order. Download it on your phone if you don't already have it. If you do, just punch it in. Save yourself 10%. Thank you, Ckeek. Trev. Playoffs or postseason?
Starting point is 00:01:28 Playoffs. Okay. Okay. Like the entire... Well, I guess I've got to think about this now. Immediately I go playoffs. I think one of the best lines we landed on was it's
Starting point is 00:01:43 it's definitely a playoff game it's the post season but their playoff games yeah that's what I was going like a total postseason individual playoff that's where my mind went immediately as well
Starting point is 00:01:59 how you doing big dog one game yeah one game we'll get into it yeah great game for the Phillies like about as good of a script as you can write up if you're the Phillies. I will say this about the debacks.
Starting point is 00:02:15 When you go down two nothing, this is about as good as you could hope for. Going home, getting two out of three. You know what I mean? So like you got a tough road ahead of you. So what? It's two games.
Starting point is 00:02:27 Honestly, everyone's like kind of riding the debacks off. You got to go through NOLA. You got to go back to Citizen-Make Park. Well, it's two games, dude. Yeah. You win game six. And you force a game seven.
Starting point is 00:02:38 What does everybody say about a game seven? Anything can happen. Sure. One call, anything. Like, the series is not over. Like, now, if you're going to talk about which way you lean, sure, but the Dvex, they don't, they don't think this is over. Ball hits the bag. Maybe there's a collision at home plate that causes a scene.
Starting point is 00:02:59 Treb, let's get into it. We got one game. It's going to be a high and tight episode, to be honest with you guys, as we get ready for tomorrow. There's some nuances that you and I. and King Bebes will hit. Jimmy sends his beth. He's actually under the weather. He sends his bets.
Starting point is 00:03:19 His beth, mooky beth. A bunch of them? Yeah, he sent everybody he knows named Beth here. There's a lot of bets and bets on the stream. Hopefully he'll be back. We're not recording tomorrow night. So Monday morning, we should have the full band together as long as Jimbo's feeling better.
Starting point is 00:03:36 For now, let's talk a little ball. Biggest game of the National League this season. You're a real good pitcher, won't you, Zach that back up. Wheeler versus Gallin, part two in the desert. Fire in the first, Stott, drop, and roll. RBI single for Bryson. And then it's we got Bryce, the double steel, Stott and Harper with the Little League play.
Starting point is 00:04:10 Moreno ends up getting popped, and it's two nothing Phillies. It'd stay that way into the sixth. Wheeler was gross. Why won't Corbyn Carroll steal? Gallin settled in until he got unsettled. Schwabber and Harper. Like a bad YouTube trampoline video, they bounce over the pool.
Starting point is 00:04:32 Four nothing Phillies. Alec Thomas does it again. Cuts the lead down to three, but it's getting real moodo. Wheels up. He's seven innings pitch. 8Ks to Hoffman Dominguez Strom, Phil's win a crucial game 5 as they head back to the friendly confines of Citizens Bank as they'd win 6-1-5. Didn't know where you're going to go with a bad YouTube video.
Starting point is 00:05:02 You nailed it, though. A trampoline over the pools. Never a good idea, kids. I was trying to think, because, you know, they both went over the pool, 900 feet of home runs and two swings. So I was trying to get there. and I think that worked. Treve, I'll kick it to you.
Starting point is 00:05:19 I mean, I was live streaming this with Bebs, Jolly, and Joe's. I mean, there's a couple pivot moments, but okay, Wheeler was nasty, Harper, Schwerber, Real Mudo Homer, yeah. It was, like I said, everything you could hope for as Philly. You score first. You score two in the first. You steal one, literally, steal home. Bryson's thought with a nice swing on a 2-1 curveball
Starting point is 00:05:44 from Gallow to drive in the first run. then we saw the Harper I guess is that stealing home I always like it goes down stealing home but it is I get it I get it I get it
Starting point is 00:05:55 I get it Moreno on that note gets knocked again he's been banged up this post he's like he needs to like after all this is done
Starting point is 00:06:04 chill for a little bit bro like let's just take the armor off and just stop having balls and bats and elbows thrown at you that would be good for you but getting back to the Phillies look here's what they wanted
Starting point is 00:06:14 to do to that they wanted to get out to an early lead. Check. They wanted to continue to hit homers and have their stars go. Check. Shwarber, Harper, Rial Muto, all hit homers. Awesome. They want to continue to play good defense. Bryson's thought all over the field.
Starting point is 00:06:31 They wanted Zach Wheeler to go deep into the game so they can save their bullpen. Check, check, check. Everything, dude. They wanted to add on late. So they don't have to bring Alvarado in. Check. I mean, they did everything that they needed to do this game
Starting point is 00:06:44 to, I guess, swing the momentum back and have them really feeling like they're in control of the series. Because I do believe they are in control of the series. I don't believe it's over. I just was talking about that beforehand. You know, this is still just two games. But, you know, Wheeler to Hoffman, Dominguez to Strom. You don't have to use Kimbril. He wasn't going to pitch to that anyway. But you don't use all variety. You get Rangers Suarez up, which I love that. I kind of wanted to see him come in and use this as his bullpen day-ish and just close the game out. I just love when that happens.
Starting point is 00:07:14 during the postseason or the playoffs, excuse me. But they saved everyone, man. This was, like I said, about as good as it gets for the Phillies. And now you kind of, you know, if you're the Diamondbacks, you're happy with how things went at home. You got into a 2002 deficit, excuse me, and you took two or three at home. Now you got to go back and do your thing in a very tough environment,
Starting point is 00:07:37 but nothing that you haven't seen before. You've already been there. It was a little scary, but you've been there now. it won't be as scary this time. Yeah, the first inning, Schwarber leads off, you know, the biggest fear factor of, you know, of most hitters in the postseason.
Starting point is 00:07:56 Hey, you're Don. Literally off the end of the bat, like almost looked like he was trying to snow cone it in the end. Nobody's over by third base. Lead off single. Five feet. That hurts. Yeah, I think exit, exit Velo of third.
Starting point is 00:08:12 Is that what you had, Bebs? I remember, yeah. Yes. Tough launch angle of a negative 43 degrees. That's, you know, what can you do? And then, you know, they get that. The stock comes through with the hit, and I believe that was with two outs, right?
Starting point is 00:08:30 That, you know, you're, yeah, you're a pitch away from getting out of the inning, it feels like. And then that play happens, the Little League, Steel, Second, Steel Home. And it's a game. Game of inches, Trevor. I mean, Catelle Marte actually makes a really nice pick off the ground, comes back home with it. He short hops it by about a foot or six inches to Moreno,
Starting point is 00:08:57 goes off the end of his glove. I'm running through my head because then there's the Harper collision and like I still don't fully have those rules processed because, you know, if Bryce Harper's not charging home in that lane, I think Moreno catches that ball, but the fact he doesn't catch the ball makes everything kind of null and void anyways. So they get two on the board in the first and you're kind of like, what? Like two? When you more or less contain the guys you want to contain. Do you think that at that point, you know, Bryson starts, Bryson stops in the middle of first and second? I'm not so convinced that that was a drawn-up play. I think maybe that was improv by the Phillies base runners
Starting point is 00:09:40 there. Because you just don't do it that often, you don't practice it that often, especially not with a guy like Harper on third base, because that is a dangerous play. If you stop and Bryce Harper goes to home, chances are, yeah, he's sliding into a catcher shingards. Yeah, I guess. Or he's going to get in some collision.
Starting point is 00:09:56 Like, it's not exactly what you want to do, especially when you already up one nothing. And, you know, like, that's just not the guy you want to do it with, I don't think. Treve, I honestly, I don't have a good enough of idea the thoughts running through my head is that Moreno is one of the best throwers of the ball behind plate. So I wonder if like two outs all year in that situation,
Starting point is 00:10:16 if Moreno just goes for the runner because he's that guy. And maybe the Phillies had something like that. I don't know. I'm just spitballing. And hey, to go up one, to go up two in the first inning, that initial punch, we've seen that every postseason, you know, even with the vaunted, Philly's lineup, never been, never been,
Starting point is 00:10:38 Never been good with that one. Good word. Good word. And then, dude, I feel like I'm going nuts. And then I remind myself I'm not because Corbyn Carroll walks. And I'm like, let's go. You literally just got double stolen for a run. Something's up, right? Right.
Starting point is 00:10:55 Because I'm still mowed around the bases, though. I would love if there's any Twitter experts or YouTubers that are seeing something, like leave a comment. Let us know because I just don't know how you could just see that happen. be one of the best base dealers. I mean, he's either got like a sneaky hidden injury, which can happen this time of year, or he's got a case of the first playoffs,
Starting point is 00:11:19 which I don't know, the abats aren't looking great for Corbyn right now, and he's had, what, three opportunities to start the game and create, embrace the chaos that this team can do, and they don't. So, yeah, I don't know. That was tough for me. And then Trev, in that first inning, Moreno single,
Starting point is 00:11:38 it gets by Trey Turner. I don't know. I mean, I know the balls in front of you, the rule of baseball. If you see it there, you got to wait. You kind of got to know where Trey Turner is. And at the same time, though, if you did know where Trey Turner is,
Starting point is 00:11:56 you're the fastest guy in baseball. Like, even if Trey Turner makes that play going to his left, he's not going to get you at third that, I don't know, it ends up getting by him. And that would have been a run in the first. You would have answered back. It would have been two. won. That, that really got to me.
Starting point is 00:12:13 He was 54 stolen bases to five caught stealing. He stole a bit, he stole two bags, excuse me, on September 29 against the Houston Astros. And he hasn't stolen one this post, hasn't even attempted one this postseason, if I'm not mistaken. It's bizarre. I think a stat, one of the stats I saw going around was he was on first base with second base open for 43 pitches so far this playoffs. and hasn't gone? Hasn't broken. Have we seen him not like a favor
Starting point is 00:12:46 or something around the base pass? I don't recall that. And I feel like I've seen him run hard around the bases. Yeah, there was one play on one of the snakes' rallies. He was on first and he motored to third.
Starting point is 00:12:58 And I think at that point someone would have seen something. So I don't know. I mean, I was never I was never a base dealer. Yeah, I was never a base dealer. Never a base dealer. really like they made us run like early on like i could still get get it going a little bit but
Starting point is 00:13:16 guys that really steal bases i was never one of those but you'll talk to them and they will go through slumps like mental slumps where they just can't pull the trigger usually that comes after a couple caught stealings where you or you know you fail a few times but the last time that corbin carroll got caught stealing was holy shit uh august 19 so i don't know i don't know what it is that It is very strange because the Phillies have been kind of running all over the Diamondbacks. And you're talking about Gabriel Marino who led the big leagues in caught stealing percentage. And they've been the ones that have been aggressive. This is supposed to be the Diamondbacks game.
Starting point is 00:13:59 Embrace chaos as their slogan. They have not been able to do that. That's strange. It's strange to really think about that, man. It's odd. Pavin Smith hasn't it bad. and to be fair to him, a runner gets the third less than two outs,
Starting point is 00:14:16 but it was on a pass ball. So I think he already had two strikes on him against Wheeler. But, you know, that could be a playoff run if you catch a fly ball or hit a chopper the right way. So, you know, you're potentially looking at two playoff baseball-type runs there that could have had this game feeling a lot different than it did. And the reason it felt the way it did was Zach Wheeler, again. Seven innings, one-earned run.
Starting point is 00:14:46 The one-run run is late. It's Alex Thomas jumping him again as he's trying to throw as many, as few pitches as possible in his last inning of work to sneak in another inning to try to save that bullpen. He's, with everything else going on with the Phillies, Zach Wheeler's, the story of the game. So,
Starting point is 00:15:07 tale of two aces, right, in this series. You have Wheeler v. They've matched up twice. Weiler combined. Now, checking it out, 13 innings pitched. He's given up nine hits total, three earned runs. So 13 innings pitched, three earned runs. That's pretty good. That's what you want out of your ace. And on the other hand, Zach Gallen, we just crunched the numbers.
Starting point is 00:15:31 I believe it's 11 innings pitch, nine earn runs. So that's what this Philly's offense can do to you. You can be an ace all season long, and you face this lineup when they're hot, they're going to pump you man like they're going to get theirs and for the most part during the postseason it's been solo shots but we got j t to add on to that with the two run shot today so they're just going to get theirs the best you can do is to hope you that their bases have been empty and they have been for the dimebacks it's just the fact that they've created other runs and they haven't given up enough runs and all these things the phillies have done well this this series but really Wheeler has been the ace they needed them to be. Yeah, and I mean, you know, there's a couple other things in this game, obviously. You know, Gallen did settle down in reliving that first inning and how those runs score.
Starting point is 00:16:31 Yeah. His line ends up looking a little worse than it felt. Although, I mean, those Schwerver and Harper in the same inning to stretch the lead to 4-0, and that does feel like a dagger. That if we're treating you like one of the guys in the league who you are, that's tough. That's tough. God. A 2-0 curveball to Shorebur?
Starting point is 00:16:53 He's like, no, you're not going to trick me, bro? Like, are you serious? Like, that's when you know someone's hot.
Starting point is 00:16:57 I know it was middle-middle. I know it was a get-me-over. But this is still Zach Gall and his stuff is still good. It's a 2-0-freak ball, people. Shoreber just sat on it. He just hits the ball so hard. And then after that ending, I thought, you know, okay, they go 4-0.
Starting point is 00:17:13 You have the Alec Thomas Homer in the bottom of the 7th. There's nobody out. And I believe there's nobody out, right? There's one out, I believe. I think he got the first battered that inning. So one out hits the homer. No, it wasn't. It was lead off.
Starting point is 00:17:30 I'm sorry. Yeah, okay. Okay. So it's 4-1 at this point. You know, you're like, okay, we got Wheeler maybe on the ropes now. We just got to run off them. Longo pops the first pitch up, very next at bat. First pitch, popped it up.
Starting point is 00:17:45 I believe like two pitches later. Stop makes that nice play. Yeah. And it's like that momentum that you might have had after that home run just went back to nothing because, well, Longo, good pitch to swing at, bad result, just pops it up. And then stop.
Starting point is 00:18:02 I mean, that's a base hit, dude. You took it away. That was a great point. You get them on. you're back up to Corbyn Carroll, Patel Marte, and things are different. You gotta have credit to Stott.
Starting point is 00:18:18 Stott was all over the place today. He's just, he's, there's an old clip that's made the rounds in the office of, who is it, Lou Gehrig talking about ball player? He's a ball player's ball player. Like, that's, right, Stott. He can do anything on a baseball field.
Starting point is 00:18:36 Trevor Ploof type, if you will. Oh, yeah. Trevor, I don't have too much more on this game. I mean, I guess Snake's spin zone as we head towards game six, they don't use their good bullpen, which does deserve some love. Like, I know Snake's good bullpen has been an oxymoron for some previous seasons.
Starting point is 00:18:56 Not right now. Like, they've got bodies. They didn't use any of their A team that'll go with Merrill Kelly. Like, let's not forget how good he looked outside of two solo homers. through the first five innings, story of the Phillies, basically. So, yeah, you're right. I mean, the snakes. Wasn't the same guys, too?
Starting point is 00:19:13 Yeah. I think it was. Yeah. So, I mean, the snakes know what they're walking into. And, yeah, I was just going to say they need a couple bounces to go their way. I'm going to take that back because good teams make bounces go their way. Like when the Orioles were racking up dubs this season, they forced the issue. When the snakes are playing their best brand of baseball, they're forcing the issue
Starting point is 00:19:36 that makes the ball bounce your way. I know that doesn't sound like there's logic to it, but that's just sports. So, God, I'd really love to... Get aggressive on the base pass. I'd really love to see that, man, because, God, make Aaron Nola uncomfortable because his last three playoff starts,
Starting point is 00:19:53 18.2 winnings of 096 ERA. Do we have to tip the cap to J.T. And the pitching staff? Like, we're saying, Carol, there's something wrong, but also... Right, it could not. Maybe that's a point of emphasis. that they've really honed in on, in the playoffs, those fills,
Starting point is 00:20:10 saying, hey, guys, let's hold these dudes on and JT, do your thing. I mean, he's got, I believe, the fastest pop time on average in the big league. So, like, there's that aspect to it. So, I guess, so. Still got to go. You still got to try. Yes, yes. Your court, what do you say, 54 and 5?
Starting point is 00:20:29 Stealings and caught stealing? Like, I don't. He's gotten on base a lot to have not gone. If you're doing that, I. I don't know. Shouldn't really matter who's behind the dish. Although, I mean, this is really nerdy baseball stuff. There was one throw over to first when Corbyn was on, and he did kind of get that hop going,
Starting point is 00:20:48 and then he went back. So if he isn't a little base dealer's funk right now, something like that will paralyze you. Yeah, shoot, man. I wish I knew. I wish I had more info or, or. That was the pitch. I could put myself in his shoes. I can't.
Starting point is 00:21:03 It's tough. It's crazy. I guess anything else on tonight or anything else, I guess for this series. Like we're going to be live streaming Houston and Texas tomorrow. We'll be doing the episode Monday morning. So you'll get your fix there, people. But I guess for this game and this series.
Starting point is 00:21:20 I have a good game for us to end on. Okay, I'm going to be Toro the Velo. And you're going to be Topper. And we're talking to our teams after this game, getting them ready for game six. You go first. I'm saying, fellas, good effort tonight.
Starting point is 00:21:40 Let's play one more game at home. Let's win. Let's go to the World Series and do what we've talked about doing all year. And don't you have to ask JT. Romuto, how many more wins left? I guess so. That's something they're doing. I haven't seen that. Yeah, I think it's Rio Muto.
Starting point is 00:21:57 And they go, he goes, JT, how many more wins that? Five more wins that Topper. Okay. I like it. Like boys go fucking nuts. Kind of hate that you made me Topper. knew that part of the story. It feels like a key.
Starting point is 00:22:09 Five wins away. That's really cool. Shoot, I never was even close to that. That sounds awesome to say to your balls. I wish I was in that position. Emotional Trev. What do you got, Tori?
Starting point is 00:22:19 We put ourselves in this position. We went down 02. We came back home. We took care of business. There's two games left in this series. All we got to worry about is game six. If we win game six, we go play the way we got. We got our good pool of pen.
Starting point is 00:22:38 We got Merrill Kelly coming. Corby Carroll, you're fucking stealing, bro, when you get on base. He's not going to say that, but he's thinking it. Win one game. Is it impossible for someone to go, for a team of our caliber to go into Philly and win a game? No. It happened a lot this year. Teams went in and won.
Starting point is 00:23:01 The Rockies probably did. I had to guess, you can win game six. And then game seven. We laid out on the table. Anything can happen. I'm telling you, man, snakes are still in. Snakes are alive. Hura on three.
Starting point is 00:23:18 One, two, three. Hurrah. Nice, Tori. We will find out Monday night. I am obviously for my connection, friendly connection to the snakes and wanting a game seven. I'll be rooting for snakes in game six.
Starting point is 00:23:33 But, man, Aaron Nola, I think we're going to see that crowd back to being Philly, rowdy, rowdy. and is that a Monday night crowd that's a Monday night crowd but Monday night's a bonus night like if you're doing something when you have that on the docket when you have that on the docket ahead of you just know
Starting point is 00:23:52 you're like well fuck you know that's coming this week's out the window anyways Phillies are going Phillies are going to the World Series that's my Phillies accent I guess and hey big game six tomorrow are we getting seven in the AL Trev yes you have all the yeah I'll give it to him yeah I think that's too good of a series
Starting point is 00:24:12 Not to Go 7 It's the entertainment business people Money that these series both look scary Both could end up being really good Hey uh Go to YouTube and subscriber really close Yeah close to 100K Eat it
Starting point is 00:24:31 What else can you guys do for us? If you don't normally go Follow Trev on X I'm almost to 100,000 followers Oh Even an X follow I don't really care of those But I love everybody
Starting point is 00:24:46 Thank you for listening and watching. What's up, Lindsay Singleton? Love you.
