Hello and welcome to Talking Baseball.
Day one of the Wild Card is in the books.
A dramatic Homer.
Couple blowouts.
Let's yuck ball.
Yanks won.
Joe Musgrove.
Mike Stanley?
Power.
Dalton's research, and there's power in Mike Stanley's bat.
Talking baseball.
Welcome, people.
It's the postseason, and we're presented by Finale.
If you're locking in your baseball bets, Fanatic Sports and Casino is the place to do it.
Winning hits different here.
I am Jake Storelli.
That is Trevor Plouf.
Rob Serocco producing, Dalton Feeley, cooking up a sheet live.
Because we're live, which we got to be careful about.
You know, sometimes we have Uncle Bobby edit a couple things out.
We are live for the people after four games.
It's 1 a.m. on the East Coast.
we're just built entirely different Trev
and we saw all careful now.
I'll F or F with you all night, pal.
And we had our first day of playoff baseball.
It started with some dramatics.
And then I guess not as dramatic as it went, Coach Treb.
Researching Mike Stanley, I knew was a right-hander,
but he's posing as a left-hander in his picture.
So that's interesting.
Oh.
Now I don't know which one's wrong.
Also, I'm assuming we're going to talk about,
Tom Poled's remarks on the twins offseason and upcoming 2027, no?
No.
Okay.
My God, no.
There's no season in 2027, dude.
You're with the owners now.
That's what it is.
No, we, I promise the people, we will not talk about that.
We'll go Cronpod today.
Philly's Braves was your afternoon match.
White Sox Astros as the earlier, later afternoon match.
Red Sox, Yanks, and then Cubs, Padres to finish it up.
I got some burns for the games.
We'll see when my engine runs out because we're already day one.
I might have undershot the caffeine a little bit today.
Let's do all of it.
We'll go through the games.
We'll tee up tomorrow just a little bit.
And most importantly, we're going to yuck ball.
So let's do it.
Let's do a little Philly Atlanta, the 205 game.
You got a bum.
Welcome to Atlanta where the players play kicking off Wild Card Weekend.
The Braves would hope to sail into the division series behind Chris while Philly would turn to Jesus after limping into the playoffs.
Top one, Alec has his bowman.
RBI double, it's one nothing Phillies.
But how about Carl's boy?
Yes, RBI single like a good night out were tied up at one.
It'd stay that way into the six.
Lizardo with a strong five innings pitch one-er-run six-k's bottom six
I'll be's your crying shoulder two one braves after Ozzie's crazy train triple
it looked like that might be all sale needed until JT got real mootow to run triple it's
three two fillies into the eighth and the regular season is over and Austin Riley provides
the material change.
Three run, home run in the bottom of the eighth.
The Phillies and Duran go down with the thickness
as it sail to Fuentes to lead to Iglesias.
Braves take game one, five three final.
We finally did it, coach.
You used it in the correct way.
I'm glad.
I'm glad how happy material change just made you.
Really, if we're being on,
honest, this was the best game of the day, as far as just like straight at baseball and kind of
back and forth and whatnot. And it was, this was great, man. To start the playoffs like this,
you know, Chris Sale, even Philly jumping out to an early lead was awesome. JT. getting it going.
We're like, oh gosh, here come to Phillies. And then obviously, Austin Raleigh does think, I don't even
know where to start. I forgot how to do these episodes. What, what do we do? We're going pitch by pitch
because I can do that.
I watched every single pitch today.
Sale slider in the third.
No, we won't go pitch by pitch.
I guess we need to re-tee it up what this was a little bit.
It was the Braves prepped, sail ready to go,
one of the baddest wolves in this postseason.
And he showed that.
And then Jesus Lizard, Lazzardo, who we were wondering,
is he an opener?
Is it one inning?
Man, he gives his Phillies team five,
and he looked pretty sharp that, yeah, it was kind of,
the question coming in was Philly even going to have any, like, fight for this game?
And not only did they have fight, they were in it.
And even the one Braves run is kind of a funny business run early.
It goes off, well, it goes off the knob of Riley's bat.
They go for the rundown run where they could have had a double play.
Lazzardo looks at second.
He sees the runner.
That would have got them out of the inning.
Instead, the inning goes on.
their first run with the Estremski, who was kind of only in there because he thought he was an
opener that I guess that's where we're starting. Yeah, this is an interesting play. I don't know
if they do get the double play. Obviously, Riley's not getting out of the box as it hits the knob.
I think that was that a two-oh pitch, I believe. It backs him up. But if you look at the play
again, if we can go to that overhead, I feel like the time it took he might not have or no,
he probably would have. My goodness. But yeah, but you see, he's
he's Dubon out of the corner of his eye. He wants to preserve the lead. And then yeah,
Yas gets him. But that was an interesting play for Riley. You got to be like, all right, man.
Okay, it was a one-one pitch. I'm looking now. Coming in, not having your best season, like,
okay, everyone says it starts over during the postseason. Then you have an abat like that with a
chance to drive in a run. You're like, oh, shit, here we go again. Obviously, we know what happened
later in the game. This was really cool, I thought. And they were talking about Yaz and how he
He kind of came on a little bit at the end of the year.
It hits some left handers, and there he goes and ties the game up.
So definitely an interesting start.
And you're right about Lazzardo.
Last outing was four pitches.
They kept harping on that.
But the time before that, he was pitching against the brazen and was dealing against him.
Chris Rose challenged me.
He said, how many pitches do you think he's going to throw?
I said 50, and he thought I was crazy.
But at this point, what do you got to lose?
He's coming off a shoulder.
he's taking whatever you need to take
where it shouldn't really be affecting him.
It didn't look like it was at all.
And I don't know the exact amount of pitches he won.
It was in the 60s somewhere.
77.
77 he went?
Please go dunk on Chris Rose in a little bit.
Insane.
I was like, this is what they brought him for.
Like, what do you mean?
And they don't have the bullpen,
which we ended up seeing here in this game.
But yeah, I think Lazzardo
deserves a ton of credit for, you know, how he went about his business today.
Yeah, and in these hyper-focused playoff games, it is a reminder, man.
I mean, we forget.
We get so brainwashed by regular season that every extra at bat, every extra out comes and
matters a little bit that maybe I'm fast forwarding too far, but, you know, Duran comes in
the seventh inning that I think when I was talking about the Phillies path, I was like,
well, Duran is going to have to do something crazy like that.
and, you know, did they potentially over-extend him?
I mean, either way in that at-bat,
they want Duran against Austin Riley that maybe I jumped too far there.
But, yeah, I mean, they get one inning from McFarland
where he gives up a run that the Phillies are looking for anybody's to pitch
innings in this.
I didn't mind Maddingly going to Duran at that point.
First of all, we got a shout out Alec Bone for getting on top of that Chris Sail here,
which is, you know, Chris Sail didn't have many blemishes on the day.
I don't even think this was one of them.
It was Alec Baum just making a good play.
It goes on top.
It gets on top of that.
But Durand coming in there, I believe it was the nine hole.
And then you're facing like kind of the crux of the Atlanta order with a chance for the lease.
I was like, okay, like he's going to get through this.
Are they going to push him?
He doesn't really typically ever go more than one inning.
He did it in the playoffs last year against the Dodgers in the DS in game four.
the previous time before that was July 22nd of 2025 at Dodgers.
Who was in the boot for that one?
Me, thank you.
Wow.
So I saw that,
but he just doesn't do it.
He didn't do it all during the regular season.
And,
you know,
like,
I get it to playoffs.
And I was actually,
I thought it was a smart move bringing him in there.
He's your best pitcher,
especially in that bullpen.
But not in a closing situation.
Or is it a closing situation?
If he goes to the rest of the game,
Is it a closing situation?
I mean, it would have been a three-innings?
Three-inning save, yeah.
It wasn't a typical situation for him,
and you're asking him to go to.
And then, yeah, I guess, I don't know,
Riley puts his swing on him.
They were talking about how Riley had clicked him on a splitter,
his last at bat in the regular season for a triple,
like, you know, weeks ago.
And then he goes first-pitch fastball.
And that's about as pretty of a swing
as you're going to freaking see.
right there from Austin Riley,
letting it travel up through the ball.
Like being able to elevate the ball against Duran
is not an easy thing to do,
but that was chef's kiss.
Wild. And then as we get caught up in the 162,
and our guy Foolish is doing a video,
like, what's up with Austin Riley?
Now the postseason theory,
he records his third career go-ahead, Homer,
in the eighth inning or later in the postseason.
That's tied for the most imposterous.
season history, Troy gloss, Bernie Williams, my dad, Jose Altuve, and Freddie Freeman. So that's
pretty insane. And then I guess that is, Travis, we're doing big picture because you mentioned
BOM, I mean, Real Mudo, who was in an 0-4-coming into this, gets two hits, including the
triple that looks like it could be the game winner. I see a nice little smile on your face. I want
to know what that is. I just, I was just, I keep forgetting all the things that happened in the game,
Because there was, it was more than what we're talking.
Obviously the Riley hit was, you know, kind of the hit of the game.
But Ozzy Albies, our guy, Ozzy Albies.
Derek Hill almost makes the catch in right center field.
The catch we've seen him make the season.
Ozzy Albies gets the knock.
And then you write about Riemuto hits that ball in the corner.
I was laughing because Jolly had the reaction that he sold.
And that's just like such a young kid thing to say,
I don't know if Jolly's that young anymore.
So maybe quit with that slang dog.
Yeah, so I kind of had the same reaction,
but it's also this is a toxic Jolly moment
because it's the Phillies and the Brace.
Like this is.
Totally right.
It's max toxicity.
Doesn't look good on him.
No comment because I have to see him tomorrow.
So I'll let it go.
It's not Jolly Olive.
It's jelly olive.
That's pretty good.
Oh, I could.
can push that tomorrow. I'm fine with that agenda.
Sale looked great, 100 miles per hour in the first inning. Again, those runs end up going to him
when Fuentes gets got by Real Muto, but he looked amazing. I know the final stat line looks a little
different than a couple of the aces today, and it is just crazy. Like the Harper interview from
yesterday was getting me that he was like, yeah, you know, sales really good, fastball slider.
it's like, yep, that's what's coming.
Yeah, but like I've told, I've said before on the show many times,
the slider's four different pitches.
Yes.
It's not, it's not the same.
Yes.
Like he can do all sorts of things with it.
Even the fastball, you know, like, you know, if he wants to,
that thing will just run up and away from right-handed hitter.
He'll cut one into a right-handed hitter.
Like, I just, it's not a two-pitch pitcher.
He's not.
You're right.
We're going to, when we do in two years when they change,
how we measure like pitches.
They'll be like, actually, Chris Sale through nine pitches.
And I'll be like, oh, great.
Awesome.
Yeah, how they don't categorize that as multiple pitches is crazy.
The speeds are different, shapes are different, whatever.
What do I know?
It's a great question.
You know ball.
I think that was the last time I talked to you.
You were like, how much ball do I know?
Maybe some position units draft.
We'll get back to that.
I think for Phillies, as we're doing Zoom out notes,
and then zooming back in.
The third straight postseason,
the Phillies blow a game one lead
in the seventh inning or later.
You, that's a bad feeling.
NLDS, game one, 25,
2026, NL Wildcard game one.
And just the Phillies relievers,
which look to be a question.
And now as you head into tomorrow,
and it's going to be Chris Sanchez.
We have that confirmed.
That, yeah, I mean,
I'm trying to figure out their game plan
for Tyler Malley, like Rally,
will be pitching for the Braves.
And, yeah, we're going to say a lot of repeat stuff
for all these series, because it's in a three-game set,
a lot of the stuff is repetitive,
that it's everyone spikes on tomorrow,
but Christopher Sanchez has to give them a special outing tomorrow.
Like, as we go through these games outside of the next series
we're going to talk about,
because Houston and White Sox felt like they were playing a different sport today.
But, like, Mike King, Cam Schlittler,
what Sale did.
Like you're going to need from Chris Sanchez,
who's a guy in this league,
they need him to be a certain level of special tomorrow.
I don't even know on his page,
right, he got to 8-1B war.
So, yeah, I mean, he's,
look, I get your one loss away from going home.
Pressure's on you, whatever it is,
whatever it is, but you have Christopher Sanchez on the hill.
I don't care what his September numbers were.
It doesn't matter.
This guy's an absolute beast.
It was almost best case.
It was almost best case scenario.
for the Phillies. We're going to be like, all right, I guess
they just turned it on. I mean, you get that
knocked by Rio Muto, you have your guy in the
game, you're going to figure out the ninth inning
with whoever,
and it's going to be the bottom of the
Braves order, so you're feeling good about
it, and then what was it? It was a Michael Harris
infield single. It was a,
it was an Ozzy Albies hit by pitch,
and then our freaking guy, young,
thick.
I mean, change it. Now,
I mean, it's just, yeah.
Yeah, awesome. Awesome stuff.
more than in the house having a great time.
If Jolly's no longer young, is Austin Riley no longer young?
We can debate that another time.
Yeah, funny, Harris ends up with three hits.
Dubon hitting cleanup was a little bit of a jump scare,
but then he doubles in that second inning, which is one of the
innings they score in.
And yeah, Braves Bullpen, which is something to watch for.
I know Fuentes gives up the hit, but technically Norn runs for him.
Lee Reisel, something to track going forward.
Yeah, I think Sanchez is going to have to give it.
We saw Schlittler throw a buck 17 tonight.
I think Sanchez, I think they're looking for eight, which is a really tough task.
He's pitched twice against them.
I mean, these, this is what I have up right now.
Each time giving up three runs, the first time, and both times six innings,
the first time three runs were unearned, the second time they were earned.
What does that mean?
I don't know.
Nothing, really.
Kind of nothing.
Yeah, kind of nothing.
Let's go on to the afternoon early supper special,
the White Sox and the Houston Astros.
Will the Astros dynasty continue,
as they'd hope to blue ball the White Sox after their miraculous season
on a double bullpen day game one, absolutely.
Some international flavor early sack fly by self-proclaimed Japanese Murakami.
then a two RBI single by the kind of Italian Antonacci.
But Colson Montgomery reminds everyone,
this is America.
Woo-whoop.
Five nothing, White Sox.
Speaking of White Sox,
they go Hagen Smith,
to Hicks,
to Newcomb,
to Sandlin,
to Tyler,
Houston,
put some fear in them late,
but Chicago takes game 163 final.
Your boy, Antonacci,
you had a game. Oh, he's a problem. Top of that lineup. Top of the lineup. Bring back the
freaking hill and center field. That's what I said. No. No, I don't think so. Some of those low lights
are tough. This was this was a fun one. I told you before the show, you know, there's two
blowout scores, but this one felt like a blowout to me. It felt like the pressure that kept being
applied by the White Sox, what the Astros
rolled three double plays, they got out of some
sticky stuff. It just felt like
this game should have been
10 to 3
or even more.
The Astros got
handled today by the
White Sox. I know they had a chance at the end
of the game. I get that. If you watch
the game, I don't tell me if you felt
different. This one felt like it was in
the White Sox control the entire time.
Yes, I mean, there is a
caveat that in that
eighth inning. You know, they bring the tying run to the plate and that Altuve, he tries to beat
out, and he does beat out a ball, but if it was ruled differently on the field, I don't know if it
gets overturned with Murakami doing the stretch. You are, I mean, at one point, it's 5-0.
That, hey, that Velasquez Homer and they're fighting.
Love the Velasquez Homer. Love the Homer. I mean, that's a dude turning on a ball.
in a ballpark that's a fun one to turn on a ball.
For me, if we were doing number one storyline, it's Hagen Smith.
Two teams that are wondering how they're going to pitch through these games,
which, by the way, Trev, I know I haven't peacocked my feathers a little bit too much yet
because I got a couple more days to come of this crazy grind.
All four teams I predicted to win the series, won the series today,
and a lot of what I was leaning on was teams that,
I don't know if they know how to pitch through nine innings on one game.
And both of these teams have that, if we're being honest.
But Hagen Smith opening with three clean when I don't know if they knew if they'd get an inning out of them.
That was massive because on the other side, that's what happens to Blue Ball, three walks.
Yeah, I mean, exactly.
I felt like it was, I don't know if it's uncharacteristic.
It was uncharacteristic of a Christian Walker to make the air in the first inning.
They just didn't play clean baseball.
there was a lot of free passes, talking about the Astros here.
They kept talking about Hagen Smith and his college baseball days.
Like the SEC got him ready for the playoff baseball.
I'm like, no, it didn't.
Yep.
I'm sorry, dude.
Does that we're comparing that now?
That's insane to me.
Maybe I'm just a college baseball hater.
I am.
Not maybe.
Facts.
No, he did a great job, man.
He did look composed.
He did look like a guy that could handle the spotlight.
And, you know, I guess.
That's why Will Venable said,
hey, you're starting game one, big dog,
and you're going to go as long as you can.
So that was, yeah, a beautiful job by our guy Smith there.
And yeah, I guess I already started to jump.
Half jump to tomorrow because Grant Taylor throws 54 bullets for them
and he's a big, if they're going to win games,
he's kind of a guy that has to be involved.
Yeah, that'll be interesting to see what they do with him.
You think he's probably down, but at the same time, if you've got a chance to close it out,
he's kind of your best arm in that in all of your roster.
Man, they hold nobody on Houston has more than one hit.
Again, the Yordan factor in this series is massive.
The guy that's probably going to win the MVP on a team that now,
if you do regular season and postseason combined, is under 500.
which where would they be without that guy?
I mean, it feels unfair in a team sport,
especially when you do Mike Trout and the Angels.
And it's obviously you need so much more than one guy.
But as I look at this Houston team,
if they're going to win, he kind of has to have a massive game
or be pitched around.
And then you're like, well, they walked Yord on twice
and Paredes made them pay.
And that didn't happen.
Yeah, I mean, that's going to be the name of the game for them for sure.
not unlike your yanks a lot of the bottom of the order for the white socks got the job done i mean
kind of everybody got the job done for them but seeing colson montgomery uh go yaya dead center
that's a good feeling he's got some quotes about hey it's starting over so that's a good
thing for him to be in that um mindset you get at taniachi at the top being a pest getting hit by a pitch
you know a two run single to extend the lead like i don't know man they're this
team when they are, like when they're getting these contributions.
And, you know, bullpen games can go one of two ways.
When it's, when it works, it looks pretty.
You're like, hell yeah, that's the wave of the future, baby.
All you got to get is three outs.
Let's go.
But it's like, it just doesn't really work that way.
In the playoffs, I guess it, sometimes it is your best shot, dude.
Like through 162, not really, but you get that playoff adrenaline bump.
And it's just, it looks real nice when it works.
You get to put them in an advantageous match.
Yeah.
We saw a ton of that today.
White Sox scoring four of the first five innings.
That's kind of part of what you're saying, how it feels different.
And yeah, this is weird mental math to jump through.
So stick with me, people.
But, you know, Colson Montgomery ends a year on an 8 for 81 skit.
Pretty brutal, kind of crushed his season numbers.
But also, like, he's a guy who's been a middle of the lineup guy for them that him batting ninth is almost, you know,
I don't know what the postseason is going to happen.
for him going forward, but a lot of the stuff we could have said about Austin Riley, in a way
it makes the White Sox lineup feel deeper. Again, he needs to keep that performance going instead
of the other part of it. I'm trying to see what else I saw here. My guy, Miguel Ullola, I don't
know if I'm saying the name right, but every time it jumps out to me, because I've never
seen a last name look like that, if I'm being honest. Okay. Let's see. Both teams went bullpen
game. Astros haven't won a postseason game at home since game one of the
2023 ALDS, eight game postseason losing streak.
Yo, at home.
That's bad.
That's bad.
What else did you see, Coach?
I don't know.
My guy David Sandlin came in.
He's nasty against right handers.
I had like an affinity for him from the first time I saw him when he shoved it up
in my twins.
You know what?
Not great against left hand.
It's actually had a really poor season.
but again, as you mentioned, a guy like that,
if you bring you in for a righty lane
and put him in the right spot,
like he can be nasty.
So I was impressed with how Will Venable kind of handled
this bullpen game.
If we're being honest, I think that's,
we always say we got to see what these managers do
in crunch time and the playoffs.
This is where they earn their money.
And today he did a phenomenal job.
Oh, this was the play I wanted to talk about
because they were talking crap about Murakami here.
you know he played third base in japan
whatever played first base here
they were saying you know he goes
and he's going after too many balls but you see
him you practice this play
in spring train this is a this is a
pfp practice all the time you go
for the ball pitcher cuts you off you go all the way
and you point to the base and he did that
so I had Bobo pull that up
because I was like hey you know what
you did it the right way don't be talking smack about him
your guy David Sandlin too
you've been on him since since the start
Yeah, I saw, I think it was his debut
Against the Twins, he shoved
I was like, this guy just came up and what is this?
And then they faced him a week later
And lefties got him
And they actually got to him
And he's had like an up and down year
But against Ritey's it's like a 504 OPS
Like he's a guy that can do it
He's he's Randall fucking Gritchick for pitchers
It's an interesting way to look at it
The Toong guy, you know
It'll be interesting to see tomorrow's game Hunter Brown versus Sean Burke,
probably both teams best starting pitchers.
Obviously do or die for Houston, seeing how they try to navigate that,
where if the White Sox have to make any business decisions.
And I'm going to Chris Rose you, and I'm sorry,
because this is going to rack your brain a little bit.
I think this series probably has the best chance to go three.
Obviously, they all.
I'm sorry.
I'm sorry.
Because Hunter Brown's on the mound, he's going to shove and the Astros are going to win behind him?
I think it's Hunter Brown and it's in Houston.
And I think the White Sox played a lot of their chips today is kind of my thought process behind it.
But I don't know.
You know what?
I'll let you marinate in that one.
Yeah, I guess let me think about it.
I think they all have a chance to go three.
Everyone sure does tomorrow.
Also, I just, before we go on, Murakami's sack fly.
Like he comes up in that spot
And I don't think we see a lot of players
That genuinely go up to bat
With the thought process of
Let me try to hit a sack fly anymore
Like I think we've fallen into the hitting so hard
Like obviously he's you know
Murcomi's not not trying to hit a homer as well
But his two swings
That was an 01 count he swung at both pitches
It was like if I recognize the pitch
Let me get my barrel on it
Because we got a guy on third with less than two outs
I think guys are still definitely trying to put the ball in the air to the I mean that's what you're trying to do
advantageous counts ball in the air I will say this I think it did go away for a while
situational hitting like practicing it if you will you know you get into the cage BP and hey
shoot you know three balls move the runner and then infield in infield back and hit and run like that
kind of went away but this year I noticed with the twins there were guys like
trying to bring it back like they'd have
someone would be hitting BP
and the guy in the back like another player
would call out stuff and it was like a game
for them. I'm like, oh, this is
kind of like what we used to do. Right.
You're playing the game.
All right. So I think guys still do it. I think we get
I've said it before. We were so, I think we went
people started thinking that hitters were
just like robots and they just aren't. You can't be a robot
because you don't control the variables. You're
react you have to react so as much as people want to say all they're doing is getting their
a swings off it's never it's really never been that way not not in the games and stuff yeah
there's there's a you know what we didn't get today let me let me let me go we go get hot
this is what we needed i thought okay the the broadcasting uh duos and then having the the player on the
feel fantastic.
Okay.
Local guys, they understand the storylines.
And then you have, you know, guys, I mean, most of those guys are like fresh out of the game.
So they have an interesting, good, fresh perspective on it.
I thought they crushed it today.
I thought that was really, really good.
I hope that other networks follow that game plan.
Okay.
Kruck is hilarious.
He just says stuff.
Crug is hilarious. I mean, he's baseball's Barkley.
Like, he's just said stuff.
I mean, he was making that booth like laugh out loud.
He's really funny.
I forget what else we got. Oh, I think the Yankees had like a peacock game and they did the same thing.
And yeah, Cruck was just so funny.
While also talking baseball, like not taking away from it, just like baseball humor.
Does Michael Kay like not like Girardi, like, did this?
they like have to fight over that or?
I don't know. I mean, Michael K is a play by play.
Play by play. It's not a color guy. Yeah. I guess that makes sense.
I'm guessing that's how the decision went down. And I hate to poke my, my own horn here, but, you know, Benetti, Gerardi, Rizzo on the side.
Who was the other Paison in the booth? Like, it felt like Merlone.
Rob has something down.
I believe it's NBC. Like ESPN has Michael.
Okay, or ABC.
He gets blocked.
Yeah, he's kind of like blocked from it or whatever,
because he has a contract at ABC.
Listen, we love doing these shows.
Love it.
Happy.
All the people, I'm not on the YouTube live, but hello everyone.
Hey, everyone.
When, excuse me, the twins make it next year?
I'm out.
I'm going.
I'm calling these games, all right?
Stoked.
New playoff format.
Let's in 26.
teams.
Before we jump.
You, you, Walker Jenkins with a big
homeward to take you guys out of the playoffs.
Sneaky Jeff Jenkins'
nephew. Let's do these final
two games. It's brought to you by booking.com.
Booking dot, yeah,
an official travel partner of MLB.
Booking.com makes it easy for every baseball
fan of travel and catch a game wherever
the team's schedule takes them. A playoff
game, a weekend series, even a random
Tuesday in a city you never
into. It all counts. The thing about following baseball is that every ballpark, it has a whole new
city worth exploring, the neighborhood that turns into a tailgate before the pitch. Food spots
locals actually go to in the streets that buzz a little differently on game date.
Every stadium has its own version of that, and booking.com makes it easy to find a great hotel or
vacation home right in the middle of it, wherever that happens to be. Once it gets in your head,
go on. Book that trip. It's easy. The easiest way from where you are to where you want to
be booking.com, booking dot yeah,

Let's do some socks, Yanks, kid.
The rivalry is back on with Cam.
You can call me Cy, Schlittler,
facing off against Peyton and the socks
as both teams try to pay the toli
go to the division series.
Bottom two, Boston Meet Austin.
Wells with the RBI single,
it's one-nothing, Yanks.
It's stay that way into the fifth.
Tracy gets Chapman, his first playoff move, and Rice Slugs Miller.
It's two nothing Yankees.
Cam was unschlittable.
6.1 innings pitch, 117 pitches, 2 hits 10Ks, zero runs allowed.
Bottom seven, it's singles night in the boogie down Bronx.
Three singles help lead to two runs.
It's four nothing yanks.
And in the eighth, Ben Rice drags that grand salami around the beach.
bases yet again.
Two home runs, six RBI,
as Big Ben clocks another.
It's Schlittler to Blackburn to Shriver.
Yanks win 9-0-0-5.
He's that guy, Pop.
Sheesh, coach.
You got a couple of them guys.
I mean, yeah.
I'm not going to say anything I judge.
I love judge.
Okay.
I'm just very, very impressed by your baseball team today.
I'll say that.
Good job.
It was almost a perfect game.
I mean, that's,
we did,
we did do like a,
45 minute talking yanks if you really want to get lost in it more with myself and Jimmy.
But yeah, the takeaway, it was almost like a perfect first game.
Like it was a 2-0 game into the 7th that you still had the playoff fields,
but you were in control of the game.
You busted it open late.
And, you know, anything you questioned coming in, it went the Yankees way today.
It didn't feel like there was any like thump coming or any rally coming at any given point for
the Red Sox, if we're being honest here.
They ended up with three hits. Cam Schlitt, there were 117 pitches. He was nasty.
You know, Gerardi was talking about, hey, he was like a 7% curveball guy.
And then in the second half, it went up to 14%. And then in the game today, 27% curveball.
So like a different little game plan.
Not known, I don't know if that was a plan or sometimes, you know, pitchers just feel a pitch
or him and Wells just get on the same page that, hey, this is working. These guys are
trying to clip my fastball. They're trying to be aggressive to it. So let's spin that thing up a little bit more.
Whatever it was, it worked.
And he was phenomenal and unflappable.
And man, like, he's, he's been, he's been incredible.
I mean, I don't know if it was this show or with Chris Rose, but I said, I think, it was.
It was our show.
I think that's, I think he could win MVP, dude.
I really do.
Yeah.
I'll be interested to see how the voting comes out.
I mean, you know, not to quote my captain, but, you know, there's a reason.
and the pitchers have their own award.
Well, it'll be interesting to find out.
I liked us doing turkey math on it
between a D.Hs at bats and Schlittler's performance.
Here's what I do know.
If you want to be loved in this city,
you pitch well in the postseason
and you pitch well against the Red Sox.
Cam and six career starts against the Red Sox,
38.2 innings pitch, a 047 ERA.
Dominant.
You're right with the curveball.
He normally throws it around.
In the second half, he ticked up
with it. He threw it about 12% of the time. And in this game, it was 20, 20 plus percent. And normally it's
just a wipeout kind of curveball in the dirt. You swing over it. You're geared up for 100.
He was able to throw it in the zone as a first pitch strike and even later in at bats that that was
different today. And yeah, I mean, he was the guy. He owned the first three quarters of the game.
he did great your offense was fantastic uh i've said fantastic like three times i'm you know running
yeah it isn't it's a fantastic word uh lombard three hits he scores two runs you know the bottom of your
line at volpey one for three jones one for three austin wells out of nowhere two for three
a couple ribs you got to love that and then the big man who everyone said had to step up if judge is gone
we got to have someone top middle of lineup be a guy ben rice is done
it all year. Can he show up in the postseason? Yeah, you fucking showed up.
They're talking about this guy doesn't hit sinkers. Let's bring Miller in. You know where he can
hit the ball? Middle, middle. I don't care what pitch it is. Holy schnike. That's, yeah, that
one was tough. On the Boston side of things, almost everything goes wrong. I know Chad Tracy,
his first managerial move. Do I leave Tolly in? Do I go into Miller, who is so good against
lefties. And like you said, yeah, fastballs, fastballs Ben Rice hits where that one ended up.
And who knows, if he leaves in Tolly, I don't know what Ben Rice does either.
He goes to his good lefty reliever in that spot, and I don't think he made the pitch.
So that one's a little tough on Tracy.
I will say, you know how you've seen our bad Yankeeside come out when we have a good time and we win.
that, you know, Joe's McFly is bouncing around.
Like, he looks like the healthiest, like, looks like he does high rocks or something.
He moves around so athletically for those, for an hour after a Yankees win,
he moves around like Aaron Donald.
Like, it's shocking.
That there was some Dunkin on Tracy, man, and just from the point of he makes this move,
it doesn't work out, that I don't know how much you can do that.
The guys he went to in the bullpen, we don't see Whitlock in this game.
We don't see Chapman, obviously, that, hey, again, that in a couple of nights,
that could look a lot better if those guys aren't used in their fresher.
They don't use crochet who's in that bullpen.
They go to Alec Gamboa, who is a lefty with reverse splits, that lefties hit him really well,
that he comes in for Jones and Wells, who both get hits off of them.
Spencer Jones has the best numbers of any hitter versus lefties, left on left.
And that kind of sets up the final inning there that, I don't know.
I know if you're a Red Sox fan, maybe you're happy you saved your bullpen.
I would have liked a chance to keep it at like a 2-0 game with Schlittler out of it
and at least have the Yankees use Bednar or use Hedrick.
And instead that doesn't happen.
Yeah, I mean, they went to a couple guys with not a ton of innings.
understand like they pitched well, but this is, you know, this is the offs, a little bit different.
I could see, I don't know, Red Sox fans probably know a little bit better than us about who he could
have went to.
Yes, he had Whitlock there.
You got crochet.
Even Bayo could have been an option at that point where maybe Chad Tracy does look back at
his decision and be like, okay, I don't know if that was if I was just trying to get cute, right?
Like, you got game one, go with your guys, try to get back in it.
Like you can go back to back.
Like this is, you're going to.
It's the playoffs.
So I definitely can see that from him, questioning that tonight.
And yeah, I, you know, for a lot of the names we do know on the field, I mean, so much.
Totally, I know totally looks like he's older than me, but he's the youngest Red Sox pitcher to start a game one since Babe Ruth.
Like we forget, uh, just because he's an awesome personality that, uh, he's a youth.
Schlittler is young.
Rice is young.
Um, Lombard's the youngest guy to play.
postseason baseball since Mickey Mantle for the New York Yankees.
So a lot of youth showed up in this game while Paul Goldschmidt,
Manning first base definition of manning first base.
Yeah, and hey, the Yankees have a lot of platoon stuff,
and their lineup was getting questioned before and all that worked out.
You have a question, Trev.
I have a statement.
Oh, perfect.
This is over.
Roman Anthony comes out of the game.
They go back, oh, his last swing in that game.
game in Tampa didn't look good
check swing he comes out of the game
okay bad Wilson contraris
trying to get back and feel
good 0 for 4 3Ks
doesn't look really right if we're being
honest
Durbin misplayed a ball
everything that needed to go right
didn't really go right for the Red Sox
and you got Max Fried on the mountain tomorrow
dude I don't know
the Red Sox happened to go to the World Series dude
and it just did it look like
two different types of baseball tonight.
What the Red Sox have is the baseball speech of,
well, it's one game, the scoreboard resets.
It doesn't matter you lost nine nothing.
Like it's not football where it's like, well,
we literally can't handle them in the O line, so we're dead.
Like, hey, they got Sunny Gray tomorrow,
who he wants revenge against New York.
He's had an amazing season.
And they saved Whitlock.
And they saved Chapman.
And they haven't used crochet.
Ranger Suarez would still be there for game three.
So they still have that speech.
I'll put a comma, comma.
And I'll tell.
That's great.
I like that you're doing that.
I'll tell our social team not to clip this because I'm.
I also don't clip mine either.
I don't want to deal with that.
Roman Anthony leaves this game with injury.
Tough.
I just said that.
Mickey Gasper, not in this series via injury.
Ripped his bicep.
As you mentioned, Contreras also really hurt.
Like, they're coming in limping pretty.
hard. And then my other one, that's a little bit of a dagger that I hope I don't regret,
this Red Sox team, outside of a 35 game stretch where they were insane, they've been a below-average
baseball team that I'll lump them in with Houston in this. There is a world, whether it's
tomorrow night or Thursday night, that we're walking away and being like, yep, Houston
ended the season under 500 in the regular season and the postseason. Boston, if you take out that one
stretch who were they really this year i'm scared saying those words because this is how this sport
works but it's just my honest thoughts another another play that i was like okay this is not going
well for the red socks was when they sent lombard on the hit to wells's hit to a bray you who's got
an absolute cannon and i was like he's not throw him out nope not even not online like it was a non
competitive type of throw, which is, it just, it was a bad night for the Red Sox.
Maybe that's what I just got to think in my head.
Like, it is just a bad night for these guys.
But to me, like after watching that game, like this is with Max Fried going tomorrow,
and I feel like, you know, the Yankee hitters who, maybe there were some question
marks with them getting a few knocks, like, especially that bottom of the lineup.
I don't know, man.
Like the momentum is a real thing.
Yeah.
Yeah.
What's up with that?
A little cut piece on him right there.
Lambar can move pretty well.
I know, but that he was...
I know what you're saying, yeah.
He's 130 feet away.
Right.
Max Fried has a little bit of a checkered playoff history.
That'll be something interesting to check in on.
Sonny...
You know, I don't want to say those words, Trev.
There's stats out there.
Sunny Gray, again, that whole story,
and if Boston's saving some of their good bullpen can help them.
But yeah, it was a dominant night in the...
boogie down Bronx, which leaves one more game, one more series.
Yeah, both work.
The Cubbies and the Padres.
Let's have a nightcap and take the five to the 405 down to San Diego to find out who
will be the king of the hill with Mike twirling it for the Padres, an oil can boy trying
to scratch out a win for the Cubs.
Bottom one, show me your Tatease.
First pitch Fernando goes Yabo and then Mani money I'll have what he's having.
Two nothing fathers after one.
Hell of a night to be a Padre getting about 300 mil.
Mani doubles again.
X marks the spot for Bogarts.
It's 4-0 after 4.
And how about my king?
Mike King.
Seven innings pitch.
One hit.
Three walks, 8Ks.
Merrill Madness.
Viva la Frie.
France. Padres Roll them. King to Matsui to Joe Musgrove. Padres win, 8-0 final.

Trev, I'll kick off to you a little bit because, again, yanks were going on.
We recorded talking yanks right after that I was following this.
Side TV.
I was catching this statistically.
What did you see?
Fair catch.
That's a little punt.
My bad.
You kind of punt it to me.
Yeah.
You can do that on a kickoff too.
I see what happened.
You can't fair catch on a kickoff.
Yeah.
It's more prevalent in college football.
You can?
Okay.
I'm not a special team guy.
No, you're not.
You sure aren't.
I'm a playmaker.
You're talking to a special team's guy.
You're telling me I could be on the field.
Coach, I'll do whatever.
No offense.
to all my special teams guys that I know on the ramps.
I know.
You didn't miss.
Okay, you did miss a lot.
But my, oh my, this was domination.
This was, if Ryan Cohen could write a script for how a game would go.
This is exactly how it would go.
Mike King coming out, dominating PCA in his first at bat,
three pitches, strikeout, goes through that, one, two, three.
and then they kept throwing changeups to these guys.
I don't know what was going on.
First pitch change up from Boyd to Tatease,
and he just goes yabo.
And that is just, I mean,
if that doesn't get you fired up,
it's off PCA's glove.
If this doesn't get you fired up,
I don't know what will.
Like in San Diego,
if you've been in that atmosphere,
it's awesome.
It's one of the best atmospheres in our sport.
and for Fernando to go off PCA's glove first pitch is just crazy
and then not only that it gets backed up another change-up
to our guy Mani Machada who I said has entered his fuckboy era
that's false he's always been in that he lives in that era
so it's this right here
two nothing one two three inning by king and then he ends up going six and a third
before he gives up his first hit he was nasty moving the ball a little over the place
he was feeling himself so much.
He kept jumping off the mound
on pitches that weren't even close.
But he's like, I'm going to get that call.
But it's like, dude, this isn't 2019 anymore.
They have ABS now.
I can challenge these things.
Zone is shrunk.
Anyways, what am I trying to say here?
Padres look great.
I think even Bogart's homered on changeups.
Stop throwing these guys changeups, dude.
It was a beat down.
That scouting report could change.
Yeah, it was funny watching Ryan Cohen.
and just freak out watching that Tatee ball almost.
Is it going to get out?
Is PCA going to get there?
My goodness, you almost going to tell it first.
And yeah, this is another dream script.
Like, we, it was kind of funny as we were setting up for this.
We were like, wait, is everything a blowout today?
And then it was kind of funny on packing it and being like, well, 2-0-Yanks,
socks in the seventh, white socks.
I mean, Astros had the tying run-up.
And then that first game that had material change, literally.
This one kind of did not.
I mean, the Cubs were DED dead.
Three for 31, 096, batting average.
King, no hit through 6.1.
And as we're talking about, like, the gladiators that were showing up in the arena for this,
like, here's Tatez.
Okay, I think it was, what was it, 780 regular season pitches before hitting his first homer?
870, a little getting late night.
And then, you know, zero in the postseason.
And then here comes piece.
which we were like, you know, his MVP, it's kind of a special one when you actually get into the numbers.
His first at bat, one, two, three strikeouts.
So that set a certain kind of tone that it ends up being like a special night in San Diego.
Joe Musgrove, who hasn't pitched in two years, is on the roster and he pitches the ninth.
The place is going nuts in an eight-nothing game.
That, yeah, I would say, obviously for all the teams that lost today, they're saying, well,
wash it and win tomorrow.
I do think the Cubs in their professionalism that I've talked about all year,
they're going to be the easiest to be like, okay, like that, that happened.
The place turned into a zoo.
We gave up two homers in the first inning.
Let's punch back.
But again, why I went against the Cubs in this series is I don't know how they're getting
through nine innings on a given day.
Like I still see some names I like, but the recipes.
really tricky, man.
And because the Padre's
offense showed up and your
offense didn't, there was basically
their bullpen's
ready to go. Like full force
ready to close this thing down,
enter in the fifth inning
if you need it and it's gone.
So that's
what's tough about
this loss. If you get blown out like
this in game one with
what the Padres offer, which
is a dynamic offense, especially right now they're rolling, and you have that looming,
you know, game over type bullpen.
It's so, yeah, you can talk about the professionalism of the Cubs all you want.
And, you know, obviously anything could happen in our sport.
PCA could come and he could hit a lead off Homer tomorrow and they could jump out
to an early lead.
And they are, their offense could get going.
But it just, it was really, really flat today.
And I know a lot of that has to do with Michael King.
this man if they go out like a quick two gamer i don't i don't know it would uh
it's it's got to be scary i mean it is going to be gossman versus pavetta tomorrow which
both guys pavetta coming back gossman supposedly a little banged up that again i mean look
what lizardo did today a lot of times in those situations depending how banged up they are everyone's
different, but if Kevin Gossman can go to the mound and be a certain version of Kevin
Gossman, I'm going to believe in that guy in a do or die. And you're right, like, I'm laughing
in my head right now, like PCA lead off Homer tomorrow. If you've watched baseball, I almost
believe in that too, too much. Matthew Boyd's first time throwing a change up for the first
pitch since ALCS game three in 2024, there's been 60 starts. Like, I think you're just, you're the
Cubs and you're like, this is as icky as it got.
I want their, I don't want this for hitters, but I think there should be way more off speed pitches, first pitch of the game.
I think it's crazy.
Like, why are you serving up fastballs to the first hitter who like now is not like your, let's work the event bat and get on base.
I'll slap one into left field.
It's like, no, these are dogs leading off now.
Like you can't be.
So like, I'm down for the first pitch change up.
I'm down for it.
But down.
or I don't know
I think Tatees just
yeah it was a get me over
change up
yeah and Tatees was having none of it
if PCA robs that
what are we talking about now
I didn't realize yeah that's
it's got a lot of plate
I didn't realize
CC during the
the Iowa game this year
was like yeah
like hitters shouldn't be able to swing
at the first pitch
I didn't realize pitch
were kind of that uncomfortable, that first one on the mound.
Like all these talks about, you know, should you hit a guy like Schwabber leadoff?
Should you, like, hey, if pitchers are going to be like that, send someone at him.
Coach, I saw it with my own eyes.
Brian Dozier hitting lead off.
And I was like, they were scared to throw fastballs to him.
But they did because they're just dummies.
You know, I feel like about pictures.
They're dummies.
I can't throw a curve.
Oh, that's embarrassing.
And then they'd yank it because they were scared to throw a fastball.
I'm like, okay, then now he for sure knows you're coming with another heater
and you don't want to get behind 2-0.
And they would just groove another one in.
I'm like, dude, I want to hit lead off.
This seems so fun.
Right.
Yeah.
There's a couple of things that this big brain knows.
Number one, Enosaris and Britt Drale.
I just wrote an article about the Cubs and them getting behind this like bat-fitting science.
and that's something that I've talked about for years.
Like, why can't we get fitted for bats?
Right.
Now what's happening?
My next big brain thing is pitchers, we're probably at, if I had to guess,
95% to 97% first pitch fastball of the game,
that's got to go away.
We got to get down to like the 70s or something.
At least you have to show it to a team and say,
this guy, this guy started off with a slider before.
So that'll happen just so you know.
Well, you know, we don't want to show them your good stuff the first time through, Trev.
Okay, get pumped then.
Get pumped.
Get pumped.
All this, we're saying all this, and he did throw a chain ship first pitch and it got hit out.
Trev, for tomorrow, I mentioned full pension Piv, first Gossman.
It's the late night game again that we will be recording after Sick Puppies.
Treb.
What do you got on Bill Miller PC?
I don't know if you get to see that at all.
Loved it. Loved every ounce of me.
That was, I mean, Clayton Kershaw, who, by the way, turn Clayton's mic up, dude.
He's sitting in a camera well.
There's people all around him, so I get it.
He doesn't want to be all loud.
Just turn his mic up.
I could barely hear him all game.
He was like, I've never seen someone do that and not get thrown out.
And I was like, me too.
I thought Bill Miller was going to toss him.
But my good friend Bill Miller had a feel for the game.
I mean, a little bit of late night chat going.
on here. I thought they were going to toss each other.
This is crazy, dude. Miller just giving him the wrist back. I mean, it's awesome.
That's an all, that's, that's going to be like an all-time baseball clip.
I, I think so. Swing for swing? Right. Like a little back and forth. And by the way,
the best part for me is, here's the replay of the check swing. I don't fucking know,
because we don't have a rule. We don't have an actual rule. With the new rule that's coming out,
that's not a check swing. I get, I, I, obviously,
He checked his swing.
I said 60% of the time that would have been called a check swing
and 40% of the time that would get called a swing,
which that's the whole point to it.
I believe Bill Miller is the oldest tenured hump.
We have the unanimous NL MVP just going at it in a swing off of the first
playoff game.
And I don't know, man.
I think that got overlooked a little bit because that was,
that's a moment right there.
That's so funny.
The other thing we'll send you guys out with
It's a single game parlay for Tomorrow's Slate, presented by Fanatic Sports and Casino.
We're going to go with the late night one, so if you're listening to Marr, you got a little extra time.
And I kick this to the Feeley Cohen conglomerate, and it came back.
Padres to win.
Like you said, Trev, they are fully set up with all of their bad men on the back end,
which means the under seven and a half runs.
