Hello and welcome to talking baseball, the wild card.
Three teams move on.
Two teams do not.
We'll figure it out tomorrow.
Let's talk ball.
By Houston.
By Boston.
By Chicago.
Cups.
Purple I-leven.
Charles Johnson?
Long foul ball.
Probably striking.
A long foul ball.
Hello and welcome to talking baseball.
Presbynade by Fanatic Sports and Casino.
If you're logging in your baseball bets,
Fanatic Sports and Casino.
The place to do it, winning hits different here.
I am Jake Storelli.
That is Trevor Pleasures Plouf.
And we are getting into it.
It's starting to get real.
A couple of these wild card.
You could drop a mild card.
I think you could.
But Trev, as we record this live on YouTube,
who knows what's going to happen?
Who knows what we'll say?
Trev, it is October 1st.
we can start playing October baseball. How are you doing Big Dog?
You just remind me of my one big pet peeve when like guys are telling stories about the clubhouse.
Like, well, I can't share all the information. It's like, dude, you guys didn't even do anything worthwhile. Shut up. I'm doing great. It is a mild card. What was what happened?
A little bit. The sport I love. Thank goodness for Bryce Harper in that error he made because if we didn't have that, this whole thing would be mild. I'm ready to talk about it. I'm excited.
to see your face. Congratulations.
So happy for the Yankees.
Crazy. I'm so ecstatic.
The rivalry is back.
To have a back and forth affair like that.
It's pretty stressful.
I'll tell you that much.
Wild. Wild.
And hey, yeah, the 2 p.m. game
ended up having the juice and then, yeah, I guess a Cubs team going home.
Like, that's pretty wild at the end of it,
although they got the bidness a little bit.
coach. All right. Let's, because it's Thursday, we're going Cronpod in the one series that is
going three games. Philly Atlanta. Rally, rally, the pitcher's name is Malley, as Tyler and the
Braves tried to end the Philly season facing that six-foot, 11-inch M-Fer Christopher
Sanchez, a Gandhi of a first inning, an eye for an eye.
the whole world is blind.
Trevor Ploof's former teammates,
Bryce Harper and Matt Olson
exchange blows and RBI singles.
It's a 1-1-1 game early.
And it'd stay that way,
into the 7th.
Drake goes for the bald win.
Double off of Harper's glove.
It's 3-1 Braves.
Six outs to go to the D.S.
But Schwarber and Harper go back to back.
Buenos Contos.
And in extras,
Alec has his boment
Apo Taco
Philly goes Sanchez
to McFarland to Andrew
Ice Cream paint job
Fightens win
4 to 3
I'm telling you
I'm telling you
I mean this this game kind of played out
how we thought it might play out
Christopher Sanchez does this thing
when Harper and we're
we're jumping to it because it's the moment
people it's the moment
when he went back on that ball
and then you really saw it in the slow mo the eyes got real big there like oh shit i'm not in the
right spot for this i i couldn't believe what happened right there i felt i actually felt
really really bad for him because you know like this guy like he does everything right man
he's he's he's pet alonzo because he just loves ball price harper just loves ball he's had so
much pressure on him his entire career is he handsomely paid yes is he handsomely paid yes is he
some also yes. Can he bake banana bread also yes? But this guy wants to win a ship.
He went to Philly to do it. And this, it was about to be a moment that Bryce Harper lost
the series for the Phillies. And then, you know, the next inning happened. So I'm, I'm happy
it went this way. I don't know where else we should go. But my goodness, that was crazy.
Yeah, Bryce played 162 this year. I do obsess about that. He led the National League in walks.
He's a guy.
He's hopped between first base and the outfield
Whenever the team is asked,
like think about the stories we have heard about guys
and the stories we haven't heard about guys
that aren't willing to do that.
He does that.
And then what looks like in the biggest moment of the game
to have that happen
and that Brave Stadium is going nutty.
The effort that Malley gave the Braves today
is like a historic outing.
It's the first time someone's gone seven and one
in a playoff game since John Smoltz.
I know he's your guy in the booth.
And like, Trev, a couple things.
Let's get off on a good foot because we're, it's F or F, it's late.
We're aged up.
I had a cool moment today and I said in that burn,
I'd tell this, I guess it used to be more,
but I guess once a quarter, I think you're cool.
And I was like, dude, you shared a clubhouse with Harper and Olson.
You were their teammates.
I don't like that you're, like, so surprised everyone to watch about that.
I just have to remind myself sometimes.
I think a lot of people just do not have me at that level of deal,
because they see me in the warehouse and, like,
they think you just grew up, like, finger skating with Jimmy,
and you're just part of it.
No, you played with these guys.
What else did you see, Trout?
It's 1-1.
Christopher Sanchez has given the Phillies the effort he needs until that,
Harper play, which is, I mean, again, another one of the more tougher luck, him in sale with two of the tougher luck lines of this postseason. Going toe to toe with Malley. Yeah, honestly, I thought the name of the game, part of it was the Phillies defense coming through. Besides that, a couple of double plays. Michael Harris Deuce rolls into two of them. Alec Bohn makes a nice play at first base. Like, I just thought there was a bunch of good Phillies defense at squash rallies. So, you know, that was. You know, that was.
was kind of, I was like, hey, man, they're, they're kind of doing it right now. And when you have a
guy like Sanchez on the hill, you, I mean, I feel like those guys really want to play good
defense behind him because he's just kept them in all these games, especially in this game where
they're, you know, fighting for their season. And I was like, okay, they're like, they're playing
defense. It is what it is. And then Harper has that. But this is kind of, I mean, we knew
Sanchez was going to step up and do it. But I also told you last night that, uh, the Braves had
faced Sanchez twice this year. And they had scored three runs off.
both times. So they weren't like scared of them. They put runners on. There's traffic there.
They didn't get the job done. But like at in the end like they they weren't like stymied by
Christopher Sanchez. I don't think they were afraid of him whatsoever. This, um, it's a hell of a baseball game,
man. Alec Baum doing his thing. I don't know. Yeah, I think from there, the starters do their thing.
And it looks like Atlanta is kind of going to win. I mean, they're they're going to kick it to their
bullpen. And although is I've been excited about the bullpen.
I know checking with Peter Moyland, A, my bullpen expert, and B, a Braves expert,
that he was like, you know, the bullpen down the stretch isn't, you know, there's some good
stuff, there's some question marks.
Dylan Lee comes in, and for Schwaber and Harper, the guys that, you know, I think all those
parties knew they'd be seeing each other.
Schwaber goes big fly, a 30 for 30 homer, if you're keeping track.
get that one out of the chop house, over the chop house.
And then Harper, I mean, it doesn't get much better.
To have that play happen in the field for him to come up and these two guys to go back to back to save Philly season.
I mean, again, it can all be forgotten by nine innings of baseball tomorrow or this Phillies team,
if they're playing baseball on Saturday, hopefully is remembering this for a long time.
I don't know if this is hindsight 2020, but I remember I was actually sitting at Peddler's Fork with my guy, Kyle.
Saw that on the ground.
I was like, I'm not getting out of the house.
I'm just sitting on the couch all day long, watching ball.
I can go watch ball somewhere else.
So I went got some wings.
Nice.
How were they?
Watched it there.
I don't know, man.
It felt freeing, okay?
So I did it.
But I remember seeing Harper do that.
Matt also makes it 3-1.
And I'm like, okay, who's up?
And you see Swarber harp coming up to lead off the ending.
you're like, dude, like you, you kind of felt like this was the moment.
He could make up for it right away.
And he surely did.
And Dylan Lee comes in.
And he's kind of like a neutral split guy.
He's not like a super lefty neutralizer.
So he gets a couple spinners up there, man.
They did not miss him.
Swarber's bomb was, hey, yo, look out.
And then I guess it takes us to bone.
Well, I think there is something that needs to be mentioned before that, and it's Andrew Painter.
I mean, my goodness, a guy who, the Phillies fans, it was kind of tough.
Remember that fifth spot in the rotation.
They were trying to figure that out for so long, and this is one of the guys they held on to,
and he looks as pitchery as a pitcher gets, 6-7-M-Fer, last name Painter.
It's like, what?
Lightbulb wasn't on after he got called up, pitched a lot better, and here he finds himself
as they're trying to figure out a way to get any innings.
And, man, did he look?
And Trev, this is where baseball has hit a sick O point,
and it's why this guy was a top prospect.
He's slinging a 93 mile per hour change piece up there.
Yeah, if you can control that and locate it,
he looked amazing and kept another massive piece to keeping them alive.
I'm glad you mentioned him.
He could be their Rokey, how the Dodgers had Rokey last year,
very similar, multi-inning guy, maybe turned into a high-line.
average guy, you know, obviously Duran is back there. But to have a guy like that who's stretched
out who if he gets rolling, Maddeny can say, all right, dude, just like kind of keep going. This
looks great. I think that could be huge for the Phillies. And we talk about that. Like,
when the postseason comes about who's going to step up in the bullpen, is it going to be
Andrew Painter? I mean, this has to give him crazy amounts of confidence going forward. I don't
see him throwing tomorrow.
But if they make it, I mean, yeah, spikes are on.
Yeah.
Spikes are on.
I know he says he wants to.
I get that.
And yeah, I guess why wouldn't you?
Because it could be the last day of your season.
But going forward into the playoffs, yeah, I just feel like this could be, this game right
here could lead him into some special things during the playoffs.
Yeah.
And Real Mudo had had some cool quotes about him.
Just saying this could be like a game changing performance for him.
And maybe it is, like as we follow the.
the career for young Andrew Painter.
We should jump there.
And speaking of young talented pitchers,
Fuentes, who'd been amazing for the Braves this year.
And this is where the playoff ripple effect gets so interesting to me.
He has to come in and get one out.
He gets Trey Turner to end that ninth inning.
And as you talk with pitchers or you follow your team,
like up downs are a thing that we probably need to start tracking
more closely with pitchers,
especially as bullpen evolution goes along.
And who knows if it matters, or who knows if it's a miracle swing by Alec Bome.
I mean, this series, the two third basemen who had drawn the ire of the fan base a little bit,
Austin Riley with the three-run homer to, you know, change that first game.
I almost said it.
And then Bome, who obviously he's moved around the infield for them.
But he inside out a 99-mile-per-hour fastball.
I think it was his first opposite field home run since opening day.
It was his first time inside outing an opposite field home run since 21 against Brandon Woodruff.
That, yeah, I don't, part of me doesn't want to take any shots at Fuentes or anything.
I mean, this swing is, it's won every five years for Bome.
I couldn't believe the ball went out.
Right.
I don't know if it's the camera angle or what it is, but when he hit that ball,
kind of seemed like that was going to be Ronald Ocuna Jr.
camped under it.
and they panned to him and he kind of just looks up with the wall and like oh my gosh but you're right
i mean this is think about alec boe and like just he's gone through a lot in philadelphia a lot
from nick castiana's having to put his hand around or his arm around him and basically tell him like
to man up when he said i i i effing hated here or whatever f this place whatever he said you know
he gets moved to first base he kind of turns it around in the second half six 32 ops in the first
794 in the second and um all of a sudden here you are you are you are you are you are you
hitting a game saving home run.
That's what the Y'all's for, baby.
Sure is, coach.
And yeah, we're, this, spoilers,
this is going to be the only game three tomorrow.
The Chris Rose question that Dalton Feely hit me with
is like, who would you rather be?
Who's pitching would you rather be?
Because we've got Wheeler's on three days' rest.
Nola's on full rest for Philly.
Interested to see, and their bullpen, like, I don't know.
I mean, they're kind of, there is some alluding to Duran might be banged up.
Like, he said he was out for this game after throwing 27 pitches in a do-or-die game.
And then the Braves, I mean, they're a little bit piecemeal in it together.
Is it Grant Holmes?
It spikes on everyone.
But, I mean, this is, this is lining up to be a mess, in my opinion.
Could be an opener for them as well.
Yeah, it's, it's, no, it's not a mess.
It's beautiful.
It's beautiful.
It's a winner go home for both teams game.
Absolutely.
I love that.
That is a true statement.
I nailed that one right there.
Yes, we haven't had one of those yet.
I guess for me, man, I've been looking at Houston, who we're about to talk about,
the Cubbies who we're about to talk about.
After these teams where they're at, I'm not sure how either teams,
team gets through nine innings, especially against good lineups.
Like, I know we see bullpen days come together all the time, but like,
both these teams are just walking a tight rope.
I think the Phillies are, I think both teams are fine.
For one game tomorrow to get through nine?
You have Nola, you have Wheeler, you have Painter who said he's going to pitch,
um, and Duran's going to be up for tomorrow.
Like, yeah, they can get through nine.
It's tight.
Who would you start for Philly?
I think you've got to start Wheeler.
Okay.
Unless you're like, okay, Nola and hey, we'll just see how it goes.
And Wheeler, you're like ready to go?
Because then if Nola pitches well, you could save Wheeler.
I don't know.
Yeah.
It's crazy to think that way.
The saving game.
Yeah, the saving game.
If Wheeler feels good, you probably put that guy in the bump because he has,
he's been really good on four days rest.
He's just never done three days less.
So we'll see what that looks like.
Grant Holmes has been pretty good against the Phillies in his career,
so you'd like to think it's there.
But, yeah, it lines up for game three.
That'll be, what, 8 p.m. tomorrow.
I think we'll be streamed Shelfy in his Phillies on the line,
butts in the seats.
And yeah, I mean, both of these teams,
I know I keep mentioning the Cubs,
because I think they're the first real team that got eliminated.
shots fired at Houston and Boston a little bit.
But whichever one of these teams is out,
I mean, it's going to be a big look in the mirror,
like Braves were supposed to be on a path.
Phillies, we keep saying they're getting a little older.
I don't know.
I don't know.
So we'll be doing that.
We'll be recording after.
We're going to do our whole DS preview.
So get ready for that.
Live streaming tomorrow on J.M. Baseball.
Anything else there, coach?
Let's do it, Bob.
Well, let me tell you about our best Western road warriors.
It's time for Road Warriors brought to you by Best Western.
Bob, it's the Chicago White Sox.
What can Brown do for you is what Houston would ask,
hoping he'd deliver for H-Town facing elimination from Sean Burke in the Fighting Laundry.
Top one.
Where do we go from here?
I'm tealing this.
Benny biceps with the RBI single and Tristan Peters went out to right.
Brown was poop.
Four run first, but here comes Houston.
It's a PSA as Pena Smith, Altuve, all go solo Homer.
It's a four three game after four.
Every kiss begins with K.
Anthony leaves the bases loaded with Altuve up in the fifth,
and so what, he looks high.
Play second with ease.
Midroth ends it with one swing.
Three-run Homer for the TB legend.
It's Burke to Brazo Bon to K to Hicks to Fetty.
The White Sox win the series and win the game, 7-3 final.
We had some funny Midroth conversation in the group chat today, didn't we?
We sure did.
And you guys can get your double points on every qualified stay at more than over 4,000 hotels worldwide with Best Western.
Life's a Trip.
Make the most of it.
book direct and save at bestwestern.com.
Yeah.
Thank you, Best Western.
A couple things.
I just saw this as I was scrolling down the sheet.
Don't put it on here about,
and I didn't hear this on the broadcast.
Tyler Malley felt in the dominole pull prior to the game
as he warmed up and nearly didn't make the start,
but he's a freaking dog.
Wolf.
You got to give him credit right there, Pop.
The doggs are lining up in that series.
A lot of big names.
Walt Weiss is like, yeah, you're going.
one.
Yeah.
And I, yeah, you know what, Tyler?
I almost thought about giving up when I had to tackle Jorge Solair, but I did it.
Okay.
And that's White Sox.
Houston, let's move on, Yank's Red Sox, or?
This is, I mean, look, you were, you were right about the socks and the energy.
None of these, neither of these teams came in, like, firing.
But it really, like, it looks like, and we know the White Sox have a good time.
We get that people.
That doesn't always translate into wins.
I love everyone's like, yeah, we're such a tight clubhouse.
Like, well, yeah.
Rockies have a blast.
Those guys love each other.
They love each other.
You can be friends and lose.
I promise you, I've been on teams like that.
Real tight clubhouses, a lot of losses.
Doesn't always translate.
They're having fun and they're doing it, though.
I just, it's such a fun brand of baseball.
The White Sox are playing right now because it isn't just one person.
And you don't really know who's going to step up.
There really isn't like a star on their team
or at least anyone that's really just gotten taken over.
It's like, okay, like who's going to get the hit tonight?
Like, hey, you might be in an 0-430 slump,
but hey, you might break out of it tonight,
but I'm going to pick you up anyway.
Maybe Sam Antinacci is the star.
I don't even give them credit for that.
It is just up and down the lineup,
pass the baton, make the play.
We'll see who's going to do it type mentality.
And when that comes together,
I think it's a thing of beauty.
Yes, I think you're absolutely right about the offense.
I mean, our guy Chase Midroth, his series stats look incredible.
It's obviously two games and kind of the game ceiling home run.
And it's a guy that I know we've talked about him a lot in a silly way because he has big time stoner eyes.
I don't know if the man, I don't know if he messes with the medicinal stuff, but my God, it looks like it.
We've also highlighted he's one of the best second baseman in the American League.
And that's what, as you go up and down this lineup,
Miguel Vargas and his amazing season,
and by the way, he doesn't have a big impact in this series.
Merkami with the big stick, like he doesn't have a big impact.
But there's Ben Intendi, there's Peters who we've seen from time to time,
that the offense has enough between different guys to battle
that I like them against Houston's pitching, which Brown comes out.
And if you were going to have a Houston formula, he had to be special.
You'll make it through the first, and it's five hits.
And that's what these guys can do that to you.
And I guess my other big picture takeaway,
because we can zoom in on a few moments of this game,
but it was kind of jover.
As I watched the Red Sox bullpen
and almost everyone who came in got that work,
and you watched this Houston pitching,
try to get through games,
the White Sox bullpen, especially today.
I mean, that's five innings.
No earn runs.
Brazzobon, who they traded for.
Kay, who is in their rotation, who by the way, he was chucking the,
did he hit a hunch today?
Like, all right, we can work with that for a couple outs.
And then Jordan Hicks, who's thrown a hunch since he's been called up.
He's just been doing the starter, reliever dance.
Even Fettywop comes out of the pen.
Kind of looking like Chase Midroth's, like, stunt double.
And he's Pepper in 97.
That's a really impressive bullpen.
It is. And if you look around the league, like even the bad bullpen still have guys with stuff. It's like stop walking people. Stop throwing it right over the middle of the place. Stop working from behind. All those things. You like, okay, never mind. Okay. Okay. We started out. Yeah, we talked about the first inning in Hunter Brown having to be special twice. I know it was an opener in game one, but twice you're removing a pitcher before you get out of the first thing. That's not a recipe. And then you have the post game quote.
from, well, who was it?
It was Christian Walker, and then it was Sousa talking about the crowd.
Can you please get here?
Yeah.
And then you put up a first inning like that.
You're not going to get the crowd back on your side.
Sousa did apologize.
And then I did see that after, well, Adalt took off the notes.
There were some post-game quotes that Venable said he was happy that their fans came out
and cheered for him.
I got the guys all excited.
I thought that might have been a little shot at the Houston Astros players.
Could have been a little sum, some.
Could have been a little some some.
That first inning was tough.
Yeah.
And I know they came back and they made it four to three, but that is, shoot, man.
To start like that, not going to win many baseball games,
giving up four runs in the first inning.
Yeah, and like you said, and I guess this would be the only zoomed in moment of this game,
is Houston does three solo homers,
Cam Smith, if we're doing
Baseball's Pist on today,
him and Schwarber, my God.
That was, they were comparing it to the pool host one over the tracks,
and it's a discussion.
I mean, Cam Smith laid into it.
That, yeah, for me, it came down to that fifth inning.
Kay comes in, Altova's up, bases loaded,
and you can start doing the whole, wait,
Houston's going to come back from 4-0,
and they still have a lot of guys that have
played in these big games.
Kay gets out of it.
The next inning, my draw, three-run Homer,
and that was it, that's all.
That's a bat against Yordaun.
He worked at the 3-0.
He paints 97 down and away.
Your Don can go anywhere in the park.
It doesn't matter.
So you can't.
It's like, hey, put it down in the way.
He's not able to hit one in the left field.
Like, of course he can.
Another really, really good pitch.
We're showing it right there.
And I thought he got it.
Off the bat and maybe I'm just I can't tell anything anymore when I'm watching TV
But he ends up flying out and I do think at that point that was wasn't the ball game
But it felt like a big you know a big weight off of the white socks back because yordaunt didn't really didn't do much in this series
Which was going to be the or going into the series you're like hey what can they do to win the series? Well neutralize your don't make the other guys beat you
They did it and then we talked
The funny thing about the my draft homer, I thought it was funny.
It's because I said it maybe.
But, you know, I know he chokes up a lot on the bat, but it really looked like if you don't, if you don't know that, I was like he probably thought it was a one two pitch right there.
It was a three one pitch.
It was a breaking ball.
Yeah.
And he sat on that thing.
And you could tell like mid swing right there.
I guess my joke wasn't that funny because I didn't even laugh at it.
But mid swing, you could see his eyes.
light up like, oh, I did it.
Like before even it hits the ball, it's a beautiful feeling.
Sure is.
And look at the emotion from the young man there.
I mean, the White Sox, there's, if you'd like to scroll Twitter and find out what some
of the boys in that dugout doing before the game and there, there's some F&F going on
with them.
And when he got back for that home run, they got a guy wearing a wizard cap.
So that's what we're doing over there.
And Trev, I'll get you prepped for baseball today.
Well, get ready for the MVP talk.
I mean, between Yordaun and what Peter did or did not do out West.
Yeah, it's tough.
Again, you hate to do that in a sport where I've tried to lay it out.
Like, you know, Mike Trouto was considered the best player for about a decade.
I didn't have a lot of help around them.
And Yorda on that, I mean, this Houston,
team.
Regular season and postseason, their record is 81 and 83.
So, like, what did we really expect?
They've just given us so much before.
I think that's the lore of the Houston Nationals is still there.
I think that's what's in everybody's head.
You're right.
And it is Jordan Alvarez.
You feel like he can have a moment at any moment.
Have a moment at any moment.
That makes sense.
Yeah.
And he just didn't.
He just didn't.
He just did not get it done.
Yeah, and like you said, that won at bat, if that finds the Crawford boxes,
who knows how the whole storyline would change.
But their pitching was so thin.
Like, that's the other, if you're going to be an 81 win team and make the postseason,
is it like, well, you know, we've got two horses and we've got this, that, and the other,
he's like, no.
But I don't know.
Hey, congrats to the Chicago White Sox, who, you know, they had that central seed locked up for a while
and the guard dogs caught them and how was it going to end.
now they'll go on to face them.
A little A.L. Centrale.
And one of those teams is going to go to the CS.
And by the way, Trev, normally I'm tough on that Central division.
Well, guess what?
I'm glad it's not a West team.
Because that was the worst division ever.
The Central always does well in the postseason
until it's to go to the World Series.
Until the Big Bad Wolf comes through.
The Blue Jays?

Boston was feeling gray after the beatdown,
hoping sunny days were ahead as Max.
Fried and the pinstrippers could end the Red Sox season.
Bottom three, Luis Garcia, solo homer to open up the scoring.
And the Yankees offense kicked into gear with their catalyst, Chad Tracy, managing.
Get in my belly.
Cody, RBI single.
Maximus was a gladiator.
Six innings pitch, one run, six case.
It's a two-one game in the six, but then you ain't got to go home, but you got to get the
hell up out of here.
six in the six including a belly bomb a three run homer it's a sweet life for cody and the yanks
free to warren to hedrick as the yankees put him to bednar yanks win nine two final so stoked yeah
yeah yeah yeah take that no mar gosh i think i'm living in the past a little bit shake you know
that tell me about well you know still think about houston and what they used to do on the ball field
they don't do it anymore.
And then the Red Sox.
They're just, you know, like,
they just seem like a team that wins when they're not supposed to win
because that's in the back of my head.
They didn't.
They didn't at all.
I thought this was going to be a low scoring series because of the pitching
that both sides had.
It was a low scoring affair for the Red Sox.
But Yankees' bats can to play.
And Ben Rice,
I'm just,
I think he needs to enter your category, dude,
of guys that just like ball.
Oh.
It's Alex Bregman, Pete Alonzo, Bryce Harper.
I think Ben Rice might be in that.
I just like, I just love ball.
I don't really like anything else.
He's a dude.
He's had a dude season.
He had a dude postseason.
Great ball player.
Man, it was up and down the lineup.
These Yankees, they have kind of a platoon team going on right now,
including a lot of like half injuries and stuff.
Every button they press worked out.
Again, we did about a 45 minutes talking Yanks,
me, Jom and Joe's, if you want to check that out.
And all of that is with a layer of, like,
Cam Schlittler, the Cy Young winner, was about as good as you can be.
Max Fried, a $200 million pitcher
and the starting pitcher with the best ERA this decade.
He was amazing.
That you're able to build off that.
I will say, and Trev, you noted this,
because I am Yankee Jake.
the mock neck turtleneck on right now.
I do, when I come to talk in baseball,
I try to be fair with the people
and tell you if I'm having a dirty thoughts
that feel Yankee-ish.
It was a two-one game in this game
in the sixth inning.
Yesterday's game, it was a,
one-run game in the seventh?
Like, these games were kind of close.
I don't know.
We've been sending some jabs at Tracy
that do feel a little Yankee-powered,
but some of the bullpen options and decisions he did
and Sonny Gray's talking about it after the game
and he had a quick hook on Tully that Miller instantly gets hit.
I don't know.
It's easier to second-guess stuff when your team loses
and everyone who came out of the bullpen got rocked for them.
So like that's not all that's Chad Tracy.
They were outgunned.
It was in the Bronx that Cody's Homer is a one of 30.
It's a unicorn homer, which, hey, they got home field
and they got to play at that stadium.
And the Red Sox were just beat up, dude.
I mean, Roman Anthony leaves that first game.
And there's rumors he went back to Boston.
He was in the dugout tonight.
Wilson Contreras is playing very hurt.
I know Mickey Gasper became a bit of a goof on this show,
but that's because he had Babe Ruthian numbers for a little bit there.
This Boston team was limping into this,
and I think if you want to get tougher with it,
like they had a good six weeks outside of that this wasn't a very good baseball team yeah i mean
i get it they dealt with some things dealt with some injuries i still thought that
they could get it rolling if i mean there was a there's a lot of ifs uh and sometimes you have
to focus on that in the postseason if roman anthony was a guy uh that changes everything he wasn't
he was hurt clearly was trying to get back couldn't do it um the guy
that we thought were going to be really important for them in the bullpen,
Garrett Whitlock and crochet and Whitlock,
both got banged around today.
And that brings up the discussion of,
yeah, do you let Sonny Gray run as long as you can?
And I don't know if I'm in on that, dude.
Like, I, he wasn't rolling like someone that, like, needs to be in there.
You know what I mean?
Like, his end line is four and two-thirds, six.
six hits. He struck out five guys, but like, I don't know, like, you do have guys in the
bullpen that are supposed to get the job done. It was one of the calling cards of your team.
So hindsight, yeah, let's let Sonny do it. And he had the quote about, hey, I'm the best guy
in the AL third time through the order. I'd like to be trusted there. I get it. I think
Sonny's a dog, man. I truly do. I don't know. I think it's too much going on about taking him out
right there because it wasn't like some special dominant performance happening right before
our eyes. This was not a Blake Snell 2020 World Series to me. No, I think it's if the moves work,
which again, that's a little tricky, like Garrett Crochet comes in and gets no outs and four
earn runs go to him, which is really tough because it also started with a lead off strikeout on Spencer
Jones who beats it out to first base.
That was Hadley double
clutches. That changed the entire
inning right there. This is a
two to one game. Two to one game
he strikes Jones out on a freaking
50 footer.
And just this, it wasn't
Adley, I get that he hesitated
a little bit, but Anthony Rezo talked about this
right there.
And I said whatever team plays better
defense in the series is going to win because I thought
it was going to be close and runs will be
at a premium. They weren't. This
right here, man. Like, get to the front of the...
In what world are you on the back of the base?
I've never seen it. Me neither. I've never ever seen that
at all. It plays right in front of you. Nobody's on base right now. You see the ball go
and you find the base and you can't stretch, like Rizzo said, it's not a stretch thing.
You have to square up right there. But you can't be on the back of the base. That's another,
you know, whatever the base is.
It's 18 inches, whatever it is, and how many split seconds is that?
But it was enough that he's safe and then everything unraveled for that.
I truly do think that changed everything about that.
Yes.
Yeah.
And I mean, there is a couple, he doesn't cover first earlier.
Trevor Story has like a diving line drive that he knocks down, that he's not over at first.
So yeah, I mean, that's a tough one.
He was also basically their only offense.
in this game. And again, he's playing very banged up. He was in front of his locker, like, crying a week
ago saying he wasn't going to be able to play in the postseason, so who knows? I mean, brutal serious,
Raphael at Durbin do not get hits. Jemai Jones is their verse lefty guy leadoff hitter. He goes
0 for 4 in this game. Nobody really has good numbers. And again, a lot of that goes to Max Fried and
Cam Schlittler, who dominated these games. And yeah, like they, a lot of the Yankees,
stats look good and they
have a game plan
especially in this three
game wild card with who was going to touch
the mound for them and their ability
to platoon. They had eight
lefties in their lineup today. That was a
wild card record I believe.
And in the game before that
it was majority righties.
So they, it's not your
it's not your father's Yankees.
You know, they don't roll the same
lineup out there every day.
But in the playoffs, when it
works, it feels beautiful because you can put guys in advantageous matchups.
I do think, as they're going on to face Tampa, which they also are very good at putting
their guys in advantageous spots, it's going to feel a lot different than this.
But we're the pulse of Yankee fans, there's an exhale.
Not feeling amazing about Tampa, but it's the knowing, the Yankees best is still really good.
Yeah, because they have excellent starting pitching.
We didn't even see, like we don't even talk about Garrett Cole.
No call.
We're talking about their starting pitching.
We're talking about two absolute dogs and freed and, oh my gosh.
Schlittler.
Schlittler.
They can do a lot of different things.
And now it seems really smart that they didn't have Aaron Judge push it through this series.
They didn't need them.
No judge, no Garrett Cole, no Carlos Rodon, no Giancarlo's Stanton.
that's pretty, pretty nuts.
Boston's bullpen, oh, a 225 ERA in this series.
So again, that's, hey, Chad Tracy, you can press the wrong buttons.
The wrong button ain't supposed to look like that.
I think this Boston team, and again, like I, the hesitation you hear in my voice is me
being a Yankee fan and trying not to be too harsh on it.
I think Boston fans are being harsher on this team.
They're often shut down in September.
like they're in a weird spot with Roman Anthony right now.
That's honestly none of my business.
One of the weirdest years of baseball in the Commonwealth.
Very strange.
When I first saw them this year,
I thought they were one of the worst teams.
Their lineup was horrendous outside of like two players.
And then they just turned it around so quickly
that it makes you question yourself.
Like, what did I see?
Was I wrong about them?
And it turns out,
They were just a super streaky baseball team, I guess.
I don't know.
Did you like Freed staring down Contreras?
Because I did.
Max Fried, again, I have limited experience with him off the field.
You know him better than I do.
But he's one of the sweetest, like, people I've met.
Like, if there is a room of people that was like,
hey, could you watch my pet bird for the next three hours?
Like, Max Fried, I think he'd be the pick.
But on the field.
who he turns into a bad man he's awesome awesome uh there is something going on in his life that i feel
like is like public but like not really your call if you want to bring that i'm not saying anything
okay i i talked to him about it when i saw him in minnesota i'm like what's what's going on here dude
anyways uh good job max fried i love you big dog good non tease for the people yanks go on to face
the Tampa bay raised the one in two teams record wise and the
the AL. That should be fun.
There's good, hey, I know a lot of you aren't Yankees fans.
Some talking Yanks, if you want to tune in, it's going to be juicy.
Judge is going to be fighting to get back on the field.
The Yankees are going to have to keep two more pitchers for the five-game series
that there's, Yanks got some good drama going on.
Not bad for bids.

It's two nothing fathers.
Nico gets Cubs fans
a little Horner

but likes God's betting.
Holy Sheets!
Pinch hit two run,
home run,
4 to 1 San Diego
and they are
the Cubs Daddy.

San Diego moves on.
I think about
the guys.
God Sheets. God's betting.
God's betting. Yeah, I stumbled through it.
I feel my brain literally giving out on me.
So you might be hand it off to Derek Henry and let him get it.
Am I Derek Henry?
You're Derek Henry.
You're not Lamar Jackson.
Holy Sheets.
I'm a, was Cooper Rush is he there back up these days?
You're more Scataboo than anything.
A little scataboo in my game.
Talk about, hey, we're hitting the late night portion of the show.
I know the internet's in shambles these days.
What they're doing with the Cam Scataboo,
Jackson Dart, J.J. McCarthy stuff is just 10 out of 10.
It's perfect.
I mean, some of the interviews I've seen of Cam or,
I'm going to say he might be a little deserving of some of the internet mockery.
I don't think he's against it.
I think that's the beauty of it.
I mean, yeah.
Anyways, that's San Diego and the Cubbies.
Trev, this game,
your guy Pavetta.
I mean, Cubs looking to change the vibes from an ugly night
and PCA strikes out and they lose a challenge call
like right off the rip.
That San Diego building has some juice.
I'm not just sucking up.
Like, listening to that broadcast,
that's a special baseball town these days.
And also, Noah was special.
The Cubs not hitting.
Yeah.
I do think the ball,
park and the atmosphere play to factor into it because they're look you have to play good baseball
too for the crowd to continue to be around you which they did um early leads are always going to be
great when you're playing at home in a playoff series like uh in a in a spotlight peckos so they gave
their fans something that cheer for to take notes houston astros if you want your fans be behind you
score first i don't know like get out to a lead that's usually helps a lot um
This, to me, was more like a, what we would, when we were previewing the series or, you know,
thinking of the Padres, how can you be successful in a postseason series?
This was like what we thought about.
Your starter, you know, gives you four.
Your bullpen comes in and dominates.
And that's kind of how this went down.
I mean, Cubs, one run in the two games, Padres scored a bunch last night, didn't need too much tonight.
but this was a this was a beat down it was a beat down it the the cubs i felt like never had a chance to a chance
in this series the cubby's offense that behind pca who's going to win the MVP um bregman went nuts
that final month that that professional lineup that i rant and rave about that finished first in
ops and first and runs and may have been slightly rigly aided uh it was it was a decent rigly
a year, I think the number say.
They go eight for 62 in the series.
That's a 129 batting average.
One extra base hit, it's Horner in the last inning.
I mean, crazy.
PCN Bregman 0 for 15 with 8K.
So there is a little bit of kudos to this San Diego pitching staff.
Like they, it's what makes them exciting as a team.
But I mean, my, if I was featured on baseball today tomorrow or if we had another, like,
if we had more of a clickbait baseball show,
show, it would be the Cubs lost this series two weeks ago when they lost that wild card spot
and these games weren't at Wrigley.
Because, like, they easily could have been.
And instead, they're in this environment watching each guy come in, watching balls,
you know, that ball goes off PCA's glove, the Tatis Homer.
Like, I don't know.
They got dominated.
So you almost can't say that.
Yeah, PCA and Bragman 0158Ks is a jarring, jarring, jarring.
It never looked good. PCI, I feel like put a lot of pressure on himself and look like that, at least to me, where he's like, I got to be the guy, I got to be the guy. And he's been the guy all season long. The difference is in 162, if you don't get hits for two games, it's all right. You have another one coming the next day. In the postseason, you don't. So you just got to sit with this now. He's going to win the MVP. It's most likely going to be unanimous. But until that day, he's just going to win the MVP. It's most likely going to be unanimous.
to be thinking like, hold, like, I don't know what happened there. And then the Bragman thing,
you know, I don't know. It has, he broke his face, dude. Yeah. Right before this series.
Like, he didn't look right. Yeah. How could you be right? You know, so that's tough for them.
But in the end, I think it is really is about the Padres in executing and again, getting to those
early leads. Michael King, whatever he did last night, uh, to, to save the bullpen or,
to not have to work them too much.
That's going to pay dividends not only in this series and how it did today,
but in future series in this playoffs and these playoffs this year down the line
because you can't, you don't want to throw these guys every night.
So what he did last night, set him up for today.
I thought they got probably more out of Povetta than they thought they would too.
He pitched well.
He had a, you know, in and out of some trouble.
He had a big freaking emotional, you know, end of an inning.
and they kind of just did everything right.
It was the best case scenario.
You know, the Yankees had the best case scenario of their series happened.
They pushed some buttons.
Boston push buttons and they went horribly wrong.
You can kind of say the same for San Diego.
And like, as you look at that final box score, you know,
Bradgley, Adam, Morahone, Miller, that's what those cats do.
Like, they're supposed to win their matchups because that's what they do.
and it's what makes this team kind of scary.
Yeah, I mean, that one inning, they got two on, nobody out against Povetta.
That's kind of your only chance to score in the game.
And if you don't, well, now it's gone.
And you're right.
Like if they could have exposed more relievers yesterday, could that have mattered?
I don't know, man.
It's one run over two games.
You just got mowed down.
The Sheets Homer's awesome.
Palencia in there throwing absolute BBs at the bottom of the zone.
And he gets one.
Down and in the honey hole, man.
And this cameraman thought it was going to be in the second deck.
Yeah.
Incredible moment there.
He knew it right away too, which is really cool.
Pinch hitting like that.
It's so hard.
We say it all the time on the show.
You know, I think there are certain guys who throughout the season get a little bit more used to it
because, as you mentioned, your yankster platooning.
You might get into the groove like that.
But it's still one of the hardest things to do in sports is to come in cold off a bench
and taking a bat, especially against the guy.
like that. And he puts the swing. And at that point, the bullpen's already in. The dogs are
coming. You got a three-run lead. It seemed insurmountable for the Cubs. Yeah. And as I'm looking
back at this, you know, because me and the Cubs, me and Cubs fans got into some interesting
arguments before this. A, was their pitching banged up? Yes, I know there's a world where
Kate Horton and Justin Steele would be there one, too, in a perfect world.
But there's some other teams with pitchers on the aisle as well.
Edward Cabrera, you know, that didn't really work out this year.
Did Shodon Clay Holmes not pitch in this series?
I mean, they were talking about Clay Holmes starting tonight.
I think Holmes got up at some point during the game,
but obviously didn't come in.
Yeah, again, you can't point to anything when your team only scored one run,
but I don't know.
And I know Gossman was banged up,
and the reason they lost is they couldn't hit
and they faced better pitching.
But I don't know.
That's got to feel a little weird for Cubs fans.
And again, having to win so many games down the stretch
to try to be competitive, to try to compete for this wild card.
And then how hot San Diego got?
I don't know.
There's another world where they play these games at Wrigley,
and I think if they could align their pitching up a little different,
it could have felt a little different,
but that's not what happened at all.
And I think Cubs fans,
I think this is going to be a weird offseason for them.
Like, happen Suzuki are both free agents.
How are they going to line up their pitching?
And I wonder, I know the Cubs have put together
some bullpens in recent years,
but especially walking away from a series like this.
Like, if I'm a Cubs fan,
I think I want opening day to come next year
and I see a couple dragons in our bullpen that I'm like,
hey, that's how we end games now.
I don't think that's how good bullpens are formed.
I feel like they just like happen.
I don't know.
Every time you go into a year,
our bullpen's sick.
It's not.
I mean,
just like find these guys randomly throughout the year.
Oh, he stepped up.
I don't know.
You're renting and raving about the Chicago White Sox bullpen.
They didn't put that together and think,
hey, man, we're going to be awesome.
And, like, just click for them.
The bullpens to me, I don't know.
I don't know how to build.
I'm Dave Dombrowski here, bro.
I do not know how to build a bullpen.
I don't think anybody does.
And that's the secret.
I mean, San Diego traded away.
Okay.
Trade away the second prospect in baseball to get the bad man as their closer.
It's interesting, though, because I feel like a lot of times you go and make that move
and it doesn't work out, but Mason Miller is just that guy.
I don't know.
The case and point is the Dodgers trying to go out and,
to the free agent market and build this bullpen.
And every time they do that, it doesn't work.
And they got to go to, oh, hey, this young guy that throws 100 is great.
Let's try him.
Oh, yeah, the guy we brought up from Japan for paying the league minimum two.
He's great.
I don't know.
It's such a weird thing.
But I do agree with you.
I'll tell you what.
It's the best time ever to be like a mass starting pitcher because go out to that bullpen
and start a new life out there.
I do want to root for the Cubs.
I feel like, you know, they're one of those.
teams they're trying man they're going out and they're signing free agents they went out and got
kyle tucker um they go out and sign alex bragman they got PCA in a trade they're like okay like
this everything's working and then they get bit by the injury bug with their starting pitchers
they try to remedy that at the trade deadline it's like i don't know yeah you want to root for
them because they're they're they're giving it their best effort and just if you go back for
ever since craig counsel's been there i believe they miss the
playoffs the first year in 2024.
They lose the divisional series last year to the
Brewers and then they lose in the wild card rounds now.
So it's, it hasn't been great.
It's an interesting look in the mirror of like,
okay, this could be the last year where you do this playoff format
because we're a new CBA.
That's often what comes with it.
But if you're, you know, the brewers in the way they're running that division,
if you're going to be in a three game wild card,
you can leave yourself vulnerable every year.
Like depending what other team ends up in that slot,
is it San Diego?
Is it, I'm obviously not doing an ALNL thing.
Is it Houston?
Is it like you're leaving yourself a three-game baseball sample size
that ask the Phillies or the Braves after tomorrow?
Two teams that like themselves,
one of them's going on and still has World Series hopes.
The other is just going to be done.
And it's, I don't know, it's kind of gross.
It does feel a little nasty.
It's a little nasty.
John Bino hopped on here before,
and he's like,
I don't,
something about this format feels a little off.
We,
well,
because we rant and rave about what makes baseball difference is 162.
And it's like,
oh yeah,
by the way,
you got a three game set.
Right?
Right after it.
And if you,
if you're the second best team,
you don't win your division,
you're in that wild card.
It don't matter.
We're going to have a long off season
to be able to talk about that.
we will see you tomorrow night.
Again, we'll be live streaming.
Jam baseball, Shelfy, myself.
Maybe Jolly?
I feel like I forget Jimmy Norp.
I don't know.
We'll probably be ruined Phillies.
I'll be honest.
That's kind of our thing here.
We support our people.
But come check it out.
It's a good time.
We'll record talking baseball,
the DS series afterwards.
Shout out Dolin.
Shout out Rob Chiraco.
Jay sucks.
Shout out dinosaurs.
You know?
Yeah.
Yeah.
Feathered?
They did have feathers.
Facts.
They did have feathers.
Facts.
Don't love that for my dinosaurs, but...
Brings them down.
I heard like a sandstorm or a windstorm on Mars would feel like this.
Because the atmosphere is not thick.
