Hello and welcome to Talking Baseball. A little sweep week, the four best teams, the Phillies, the Dodgers, the Yankees, the Minnesota Twins. We're going to talk about that. We're going to talk a lot of ball. Maybe some Game of Thrones. Oh, I got for you. Oh, Cole Hamels. Alec Berluson.

baseball, we've wondered for years about different iterations of this show and what do we need to talk. We need to talk more about the Dodgers. We need to talk more about this, that, and the other. Unfortunately, I've let you talk about the Minnesota twins all year. And if the playoffs started today, I think they'd be an over tiebreaker on the Texas Rangers. I'm on the page right now, looking that up. Okay. I called these games. Yeah, we swept 3-0. Boom.

So, yeah, I'm happy for you. I'm happy for us. Congrats to you and the Twins. How are you, Trev? Well, I wanted you to ask me why I'm wearing this Halloween Pearl Jam shirt. That's no fun. Well, just ask me. Why are you wearing that Halloween Pearl Jam shirt, Trev?

My Yanks just got a nice little serious sweep. so I'm excited for that. I don't know, man. I'm jazzy to get to the next part. I don't know if that means dog days. I don't know if it means, like, I talk pseudo-playoffs and some of these fun series that are popping up.

And, man, the action, like Bobby Clips, this episode, watch out. Whether it's Chase Midroth, diving in the hole, whether it's how the Sintzy game ended, whether it's, there is a lot of action. I just, I like when I look at the, those American League standings that you'll give in a little bit.

It's, I still can only do so much with them. The National League is getting a little more sorted. And I don't know, man. I'm starting to. Is it, though? Is it sorted? A little more sorted. I'll be the first one to say it this year.

They don't call it the mild card. Shout out Tommy LaSorda. Baseball legend. And I just think it's time we get. into this big dog it is Friday which means we're starting with the national league and speaking of wild clips game one marlins fighting for their life phillies fighting for their life a little bit and a game tying double oh no ump misses the call they go to replay they only reward two runs i you hate to see it Phillies end up winning that game.

They end up winning the next two. They joined sweep week. Christopher Sanchez. Not out of that Cy Young race, Coach Trev. And the Marlins' bats go quiet in that final game. Phillies, get the sweep. Some of the best baseball of the year happened in Chicago at Wrigley Field. The White Sox and the Cubbies, we already talked about a little bit.

The PCA game, 30-30, lead-off homer, walk-off homer. Lead off Homer the next night, his guy Breggy, my salsa, he walks it off. And then the White Sox, show me your cat. Jose, your kitty. Shut them down as the White Sox salvaged the series. That's fun. Hey, Brewers, Mariners, if your team scored the first six runs, you won. And twice that was the Brewers, 22-0.

Game one. Luckily, there's no rollover to the next day in the Mariners. They go up big early, knock around Dustin May, but Milwaukee hang six in the first on George Kirby. They hold on a little bit as they take two out of three from Seattle. The St. Louis Cardinals take three of five from the Cincinnati Reds. Kind of three of these games could have flipped on a single swing. Oh, Quinn Matthews, interesting, that made the sheet. He has a nice performance.

in that first game. The final game is maybe the ugliest game of the season. I think the Diamondbacks wanted to start playing in it at one point, just because it was such chaos. Cardinals take that game. They take the set. Dodgers sweep the Rockies, and that's obvious. Blake Snell is back. Six innings, one run. Max Muncie, three-run homer. Schohey-O-Toney homering twice. He homers in the next game, and then they get it done on that final game. Mookiee Betts was in that game and then he golfed in front of Trevor. How do you like that? San Diego, Fernando.

It was Fernando in that second game. The home run robbery. The two home runs. About as good of a baseball game as you can play. And as cool as it gets. The hair flip, are you kidding me? Well, guess what? The rest of it was Mets.

The post-trade deadline Mets cannot be... Stop running on Carson Benj. What are we doing? okay state go pokes i love me some jared young and how about closer uh sanga it's a janga joke pirates take two out of three from the tigers sure uh tigers won that first game how you lee how you doing three for three two walks two rbi uh and then your guy braxon ashcraft shuts him down and how about rafel flores junior and a little be loud gets loud with the walkoff on Kenley.

Pirates win the series. That's what happened in the National League. I'm a boy, Jakey. I got the standings. Let's do it, Pop. Because the National League is fun right now. You talk about the AL Wild Card and what's going on there. You know, there's a lot going on here as well, but we'll start out east.

Or the Bray's got swept. We haven't been there yet, people. We'll get there. 75 and 53. Only a five-game lead in that division now. You get swept. The team behind just, sweeps, it gets a little tighter.

The Phillies, 70 and 58, 64 and 64 for those Marlins, 61 and 68's for the Nats. They've kind of fallen off, huh? My goodness. And then the Mets, 58 and 70 at the bottom of the division. The Central, another five-game lead. This one is the Milwaukee Brewers at 30 games over 500 people, 79 and 49 for them. The Cubs behind 74 and 54. your St. Louis Cardinals, 66 and 63.

Reverse that for the Pirates. They're 63 and 66 and Cincinnati, 61 and 67. Not too long ago, every single team in the Central's over 500. Not that way anymore. Out West, the Dodgers, a nine-game lead over the Padres. There's 77 and 51. The Padres behind them at 68 and 60. The D-Backs one game back of that, 67 and 61.

The Giants, Tony Vitella, where is he from in Game of Dones? really figure it out. 52 and 75 for them. And then the Rockies, 50 and 77. Now, let's talk wild card, Jake, where the Cubs would have the number one spot. The Phillies would have the number two spot. And the Padres, Ryan Cohen's Padres, would have the third spot behind them by one game in that wild card.

The Diamondbacks? Two and a half games back. The Cardinals. And I'll sneak Miami in there. They keep hanging on. Clayton McCullough, what are you doing down there? Four games back for them. Those are the standings in the National League.

We'll start Phillies, Marlins, and then we'll head to Chicago, windy city, politics, and Wrigley. I think people need to add that to the equation. The Philly sweep, and Trev, that first one's a tough one,

and I do want to hear you talk about. I actually had a nice Jakey. You and I are both. I think the summer heat's getting to us. We're exploring the depths of our brains. It was fun. I'm glad Queen gets to, get to saw a little bit of what we showed off today,

whether it was Game of Thrones or other male hobbies. Trev, this is a big game. Miami's fighting for the wild card. The Phillies, the post-trade deadline, Phillies fighting to see who they are as a team and potentially, I don't know, change their playoff outlook. Ball down the line, the ump misses it. He calls it foul.

And it turns into one of those tricky things because they're going to review it, and then it becomes the umps discretion on how much they can do base runners. I don't know. I ended up in a weird daydream of like, instead of the umps guessing, like we have all these fake percentages and stuff now. Like when a runner gets on first base and there's one out,

there's a 23% chance they score. Like, I would love if we, I don't know, should we use these percentages for good and be like, hey, guys, I'll be out. There was a 75% chance that that runner was going to score. Let's spin a wheel or something. I don't know. Because the umpire's just guessing, that's, it doesn't make sense to me.

I think you're talking about run expectancy. I don't know if it comes into play there because I don't think that takes into consideration, like speed on the base pass. I believe it was Otto Lopez on first base, correct? Yes. Yes. I think that's just a no-brainer. Have some feel. I always ask the empire.

But it wasn't a no-brainer. You know what I'm saying? It was a no-brainer. If you've watched any sort of ball whatsoever, I mean, first of all, Chris, Rose and I talked about this and kind of how you can combat it a little bit. You know, in the NFL, in soccer, really, when I was watching the World Cup, you know, they let these guys, they could like call off sides or do whatever, but they let the play kind of happen.

And then they go back and fix it. Instead of throwing the arms up here and calling Falbaal and everyone stops, like, we got to figure out something where we can continue the play and then go back and get it. Now, if you're looking at this, the reason they were able to challenge it, is, is because it's behind the empire. Anything in front of the empire, you cannot challenge. But this one ends up going behind the empire.

Clearly gets it wrong here, and they overturn that. But the playing question is, does Otto Lopez score from first base? Look at this thing get held up in the corner. He's scoring, dude. I know. So, you know, if you're a Marlin's fan,

you're pissed. If you're a Phillies fan, you're like, shut up, Treve. You don't know. Price Harper brought a gunned him out, dude. And I'm like, no, he didn't. He wouldn't have. in the end, is this going to make or break the Marlins season?

Hey, maybe, dude. I hate going back to one game, but if they finish a half game or a game out of the wild card, you could look back at this call. I don't know, man. It happens throughout the season. Tough one for the Marlins and Snowhaub. But, yeah, I mean, I don't know how you fix it. I don't know.

Yeah, and hey, you know, as sometimes we say with baseball, we talk about, you know, persevering. And, hey, you get to play the next day. I do believe in momentum, and I don't know how the rest of the series would have changed. But the Phillies go on to win the next two. They've now won six in a row. And, man, the Bowman-Bott-Show, excuse me, continues to roll on. And those were two very important pieces to this, the next step of this Phillies team.

That, hey, man, if you go back to the trade deadline and us being like, wait, they're going to rearrange the whole team and what's that going to feel like? what's that going to look like. Phillies are playing winning baseball. It's got to feel pretty good. Twins got them hot. I hate to say it. I hate to say we got them hot, especially Alex Bowm.

Yeah. Hey, snaps for the Phillies taking care of business at the right time. Again, we haven't got there yet, but, you know, kind of getting back on the Braves' heels, maybe a little bit too late. A little too little too late. I don't know what I'm trying to say. You know what I'm trying to. A little too late.

Except for Aaronola, who's been pitching well. And those back two spots in the Phillies rotation, that's. been a missing link all year. So now that he's going, that, that changes things as well. I think he, I mean, I did have the numbers up on him since July 1st or since, yeah, since July 1st, 52 innings to a 363. I mean, they'll take that. Yeah. Talk about who they have going those first three games. You got Nola giving you a shot. You like that for the Phillies. Yeah. And it's been even his last five, two, five, one. So that, that has changed things. Let's see the Phillies keep rolling and see how long are Marlins can

500 Marlins when Treb's given the standings. That starts getting tricky quick. Let's go to Chicago, Trev. Because we already talked about some of this because we had to. The PCA game was just insane. Two-run Homer in the 10th after the leadoff homer. Four for five, three RBI, a steal. And it was so fun.

I apologize to White Sox fans because I felt this game in a way encompass both teams. Like the Cubs had so many more hits, but the White Sox had the scoreboard going into the final. And that's where these first two games get decided by bullpen. And I'll even throw in in game two, they go opener. They throw Brian Hudson to hopefully neutralize PCA, and he hit to Homer off of him. So I don't know. I think the depth of these teams showed up a little bit.

It was everything. The star showed up. The depth showed up. And we're, you know, we're a couple pitches away from talking White Sox sweep. Instead, it's the Cubby's getting too emphatic wins. For some reason, this, like, crosstown rivalry is my favorite one. You know, like, Brewer's Twins is actually a good one. Like, it's a lot, it's as rowdy as a Midwest crowd is going to get it.

It is. Have you been a part of it? No, stop talking about it, bro. Okay. Dodgers Giants. It's not good right now, because. Because the giant stink. Not right now.

Okay, Dodgers have dominated that series for a long time. You want to go back 10 years, sure. Oh, the Twins Brewers is so hot in the streets right now? It is. They're both playoff teams. What are you talking about? Thank you. It's careful with that.

It is. Has Mets Yankees been a good series as of late? No, it hasn't. No, but that's not our rival. Our rival is the Red Sox. Why are you, why? Cross-town rivalry. Did you hear what I said?

So you're... I'm talking about like... Are Milwaukee in Minnesota the same city? That is the cross-town rivalry. Do you understand how the scheduling goes every year? There's a cross-town rivalry every single year. For you guys, it's the Mets. For the twins, it's the Brewers.

For the Dodgers, it's called the Freeway Series against the Angels. This is what I'm talking about. You're bringing up Giants Dodgers. That's not what I'm talking about. So of the crosstown rivalry... I'm sorry. I'm sorry.

Thank you. You know what? It takes a big man. I don't have them in the same town. And I would have to bring up all the cross town right. I still think Reds Guardians. I still, nobody cares.

I still think Ohio Bowl. I think Yanks Mets would still get a nod. This is my favorite. This is an opinion-based argument here. White Sox Cubs is my favorite cross-town. I think White Sox Cubs is my favorite too. Okay. But Twins Brewers being your follow-up, I don't know.

You need to go to a series. I want to go. I want to go. I mean, I lost my train of thought now. I don't know. It's your favorite series. The Cubs are good. White Sox are kind of good.

Yeah. What are we doing here, Bob? I can't even read that. Twins, uh, Twins, border battles share a regional border battle, not a cross-town rivalry. Well, I mean, dude,

define cross-town rivalry. Oh, AI knows. A.I. knows nothing. Now that now computers are going to remember that one, Treve. Okay, good. Freaking. You treat your clawed. Very nicely. You treat your club very nicely.

I do. I actually say please and thank you to it. I don't know. Hey, great series. You ruin my train of thought. Game two, they walk. PCA doesn't matter. Breggman comes through. He's a stud. I like the Cubs where they're at right now. White Sox fighting to kind of hold on to the Central. I think we don't talk about the Central race at all because the AO Wildcard race is there. But that is clearly in play. I do like their team a lot. I hope that the White Sox make the playoffs.

I think that'd be one of the better stories in all of baseball. 41 games they won in 2024, 60 last year, and now they're in the race to win the ALE Central and get a buy. Yes, I mean, they're still slated for that. And hey, yeah, again, you know, how do I phrase this will be a nice? Well, A, let me give the White Tuck some love on Jose or Kiti, a trade that kind of snuck through when everyone was like, okay, like I didn't even know Jose or Kiti was still twirling

because he kind of hadn't been. That's a big start in the best cross-town rivalry in the sport to get a getaway win on that one. And then, yeah, like I don't, no shade at my guy, Trevor Richards, because, man, when that change up thing be thanging, it's a good time. But, you know, is he the guy you necessarily want to be going down with? Hagen Smith had been really good up until, but, you know, he's a rookie that he finds himself. the best cross-town rivalry in the sport that, yeah, it felt like the White Sox depth a little bit. Again, two teams that are closer, I don't know, that are closer than anyone would have thought,

I think the depth did end up showing out at the end of these games. What else was I going to say? Tyrone Taylor. Oh, Chase Midroth. Bring up his diving play, Bob. Because I think sometimes we look at Chase and we're like, oh, Callie Chiller, great on Base guy. Yo, two runners on, two outs. That's some real stuff. So you can't be a Cali-Chiller, get on base guy and make plays like that all in one?

Because he did it. I'm just saying I think he's got that dog inside of him, and we don't always depict him that way. I don't know what his marital status is, but him in Manhattan Beach flowing the hair around like that. Volleyball week comes into town. I don't know. Let's double-check the height, not that girls care about that. 5-9. 5-9.

5-9. Spikes on. It sure is. I get that. Trev, the rest of the National League, I mean, we've got some quirky series here, but I think we could chew through them quick. Brewers take two out of three from the Mariners on paper, obvious. And, dude, none of these games were fun.

It was 22-0. Well, I guess that's fun for one team. and then it was 7-0-0-0-0-0-Milwaukee in the first inning, the final one. Why don't you read the stat about how the first game was the most lopsided shutout and majorly baseball since 1887 between the Philadelphia Quakers in Indianapolis? I don't even think they had a name. No. 24 to nothing, the Quakers won.

We're making fun of Indianapolis for not having a name. Like, is that the athletics right now? Like, they don't have a town. I'll be in soccer. Sacramento soon. Can't wait. I'm jealous, dude. Get on the berm. Are they going to let you do fun broadcast stuff? No. I mean, Audrey will probably be out on the berm. She always... You're just boothing it?

I'm boothing. Right next to Dallas Braden. Wow. Speaking of high tea. A couple alphas. Yeah, I don't know. Honestly, the best thing I got here are Pat Murphy quotes. His quote on the bullpen in the last game, research will show that relievers are very volatile, so you can predict that. But it comes down to these guys understanding it's not going to happen to me

because I can make pitches. Maybe I'm not 97 miles per hour. Maybe I'm 95, I'm 94. But I can throw it over a Nats backside. You know what I mean? Nats are pretty small. That's such a old school ball quote right there. And you know what?

Are your relievers volatile? I mean, you have filthy options back there, dude. I don't know. He keeps ever on their toes. That's what I like about Pat Murphy. That's his managerial style. It doesn't matter how good you are. Pat's going to bring you down a few notches to keep you working hard.

I really feel like that's what he does, and that's what that quote is all about. Trevor McGill that you've been highlighting recently one run over his last 26 innings. That matters. Mariners, I don't know if you've declared them dead yet, four games back in the West and three in the wild card, so kind of not. And I know we like to joke about names.

Rodden, a hit in each of his first six MLB games. Come on now. He's kind of a stud. I'm doing a segment with Chris Rose later today where he asked me the seven teams that are still in the A.O. Wildcard race, ranking them one through seven. Spoiler alert, Mariners are seven. Wow. I'm done. I can't. I got my Pearl Jam shirt on. It ain't about you. Eddie Vedder Bull. Is that your best made-up rivalry game? I hate that one. I know you do. Cards, Reds, Treth, they played five. So that's a grind.

Cardinals win three of the five, kind of. The Reds two games are won by one run, including a walkoff in that second game, Ellie. I don't know. It felt like every one of these games could have went every direction. Dane Meyer saves one. Dane Myers loses one. I have some red stuff coming later,

so whatever you need for me. here. I mean, yeah, it was a fantastic series. I think my favorite night was, what is this game four. So on Wednesday night, you get a homer late from South Stewart, which is really pretty to watch. I don't know if you got that. If you got that, that Bobb is up right here. Yeah. I mean, he stands to the play. Watch is it, it's a big Homer. Does he, I think he takes the lead back from Alec Berthelison and runs driven in the national lead right there with that swing, which is awesome and then former twin and many other teams

Emilio Pugan comes on to get the save gives up the homer to Jordan Walker it's raining there's a runner on third base with two outs and he he feels here's the Walker Homer we go to the last play so one one run game

runner on third base last play is like a chopper down the line and it's raining again and pitchers are notoriously horrible at field in their position but but begone makes the play man pretty ballsy save right there i know the reds you know didn't go their way and there's seasons slipping away from them but i thought a pretty cool play i've got red stuff coming later cardinals stay in the fight and that's what they do that red center

field grass sneaky good spot to homer dude cincinnati i know you go there you got to hit a homer pop yeah you don't hit a homer there it's a it's a bad series Shout out Jeff Rubies, Steakhouse. Shout out Jeff Ruby's Steakhouse. No free ads. The Dodgers sweep the Rockies. That's unfortunately obvious. It hurts it.

Shohei with the two homer game, follows that with another homer. What needs to be said in the nicest way? Snell, great start. He's been nasty against Colorado, which kind of makes sense, but six innings pitch, one run. And this is Edwin Diaz, kind of like,

what are we going to do with him type series? I think that I actually don't know what you're going to do with Edwin Diaz. Did he go on the IL? He did. Yeah. You know, it sounds like it's, you know, okay, I.L. Oh. Let's fix you.

He said someone was with his neck, his arm angle, has dropped like four or five degrees. So some of the stuff is flat. If you've watched him pitch, everything is just middle of the plate. And the slider looks like it's hanging in every single. single time. Like it has to be a perfect located slider for it to be effective right now. And you can't have that. Yeah. Like nothing is coming out right. So maybe there is some issue with the

neck that's dropped his arm down. I don't know what it is. They got to fix it. I mean, I don't know. Rokey will just go to the bullpen and he lights out. Tanner Scott, who did this last year. He's now the closer. He gets a He's nasty. I mean, we haven't really talked about Mark Walters and that whole thing. I don't know if now is the time to get into it. Maybe next they get into. I taught to some very smart people about it. Because I haven't. I've actually,

we've wanted, okay, I don't want to say it because I think this man is brilliant so I don't want people connecting it with that last situation. I kind of want to make Joe's McFlyar just like beat reporter on the topic. No, that is not a good idea. What? Well, I would say

there's some inherent bias there where he wants some, he wants, he's like Searcy Lanister, like willing to blow up the sept so he can win. I just think you know how ESPN used to have like people that like Pedro Gomez covered Barry bonds, RIP, you know, Coley Harvey was on the DeMar Hamlin situation. Like I kind of want Joe's on the Dodgers situation. Well, developing.

Yandi Diaz, two-run Homer to get it going. The raise never trailed in that one. But then on that final day, Shane Bieber, seven innings of one-run ball. Okamoto, Lucas, and Das Cameron all go Big Fly as they win a set against the race.

The Red Sox kid, they take down the Arizona dimebacks. This series was in the news because Catele-Marté was missing, and now he's hurt, and now there's still a lot going on there. But the Red Sox blew him out in that first game. Gabby Moreno's Grand Slam in the second, but Boston answers. They put up nine. De-backs, close to getting swept. Mickey Gasper did everything he could because that's all he knows. But the debacks win that final game in extras.

The Minnesota Twins sweep the Atlanta Braves. Baby, cool Papa Bell, Josh Bell, with a couple big swings in those first two games. And then, you know, it was Cody Clemens. It was Kalin Culpepper getting the advice from Trevor Plouf. You're going to hear all about it. The Rangers take two out of three from the Washington Nationals. And the trick to this series is not getting shut out because each team took a turn. Rangers win 5-0, Nat-60.

Two-O. You might hear a little Jacob de Grom coming up. I don't know how much Cavalian Cal Quantrell you'll hear, but those guys did their jobs as well. The Angels take two out of three from the Houston Astros. It ends ugly. My God, how's your 18 burger? The Angels couldn't stop knocking it around the park, and that gave them a series win because George Classen was nasty. He's got some funk in there. Zach Netto with a massive series. Astros won that middle game. game, no bleno. Guardians take two out of three from the Giants. Giants, they win the middle game.

They shut them out. How about the tugboat Wilkinson, a new all-time baseball guy guy? But that was enough for San, yeah, for San Francisco to win. Because the Guardians, Joe Adele drives in six in that first game, Foster Griffin with another nice outing, and then Gavin Williams, 200 ponches on the year. Maybe we don't talk about the big man enough. And then as it was teased, Royals Athletics,

the Royals get the sweet. Bobby Witt is all over this series. Vinnie Pasquintino in that third game. You know I love me some Michael Massey. And it's always Big Sal. Statue guy. Nobody cares. That's what's happened in the American League.

Parker Messick versus Wilkinson. Talk about a heavyweight matchup, baby. Let's do it. And also the Royals mopped four gamesweep. Yeah. I have the standings in the American League, Jake, and I'll start out east with the Tampa Bay Rays, my former organization.

The twins, this series is... Over the Braves. It's a big one. Peter Moreland and I texting all throughout it. This is what the twins have been doing if you haven't watched them. They continue to score runs. So, like, if they score early, they're going to continue to score late. If they don't score early, they're going to continue to fight and score late.

They score late a lot. So they get after relievers pretty well, which is, I think that serves you well in a playoff race and into the playoffs. Like, they continue to go. Like, grindy at bats, no one name is going to kind of be there, but they'd hit well with runners in scoring position. all that's great. The bullpen has been fantastic. Thank you for you, Andrews Gomez.

He's perfect in save opportunities and conversion. And we've, you know, picked up some guys at the break, whether it's Jeff Hoffman or Tommy Nance. But we've had, like, the bullpen has really come into shape,

which has been really nice to see. If our starters give us any sort of a chance, like we win baseball games. And that's exactly what happened in this series against the race. Pitched really well. hit when we needed to. And yeah, I mean, coming off a series where you get swept by the Phillies,

it's nice to answer back and take them from the brave. So again, I think the main takeaway, if you haven't watched the twins at all, it's like if the starters can give you some, not even length, just like keep you in the game, you got a really good chance to win. A little bit of a jump scare, me seeing that Yoy Andrews Gomez has 19 says. Wow. filthy. Holy smokes. And Josh Bell, man, I know I did this a couple episodes ago, but, you know, when the big man on

his baseball reference, I think there's, you know, he was a big prospect. He has that one massive season. He never really replicated that. But he's just been, it's really hard to be a really good, really solid baseball player for a long time. And Josh Bell, now 34 years old, nine years of service time. No, I think he got the 10. Oh, did he get to 10? I think he got to 10 this year. We had a couple of different guys get to 10.

But maybe not. Yeah, we're saying no, and it shows like nine years. Buck got there and Taylor Rogers got there. There's been a couple guys. Okay. Well, I think he's going to get there because he's having a very nice year that I think he's going to stick around. For my Yanks, again, the pitching, there was a daydream about this pitching before the season, and it's getting really close.

Although they activate Rodon, Max Fried goes to the eye. but Max Fried throws that day, the day he goes on the IL. So I don't know if it's funny business. I don't know if it's one of those. If the playoffs were tomorrow, would Max Fried have still pitched? Either way, the Yankees pitching has been dominant. And Garrett Cole, his fastball was probably his best fastball of the season last night. Coming off Tommy John, we didn't know what version of Garrett Cole we were going to get this year.

The Yankees pitching is legit. the hitting has just been atrocious. It's been the worst offense for about two months, or second to worst by a lot of numbers. Yeah, Cody Bellinger's rehabbing. Judge is starting to hit off a T, but right now day and day out offensively, they don't know what they're getting.

Question. Who told you that Josh Bell did not reach 10 years of service time? Baseball reference, and then Quinn did a head tilt that was kind of just like... Quinn? you were wrong. He got it in July. Congrats, Josh Bell.

But if you're looking at the office, You score 10, you score six, and you score five. You get the series. I mean, that's kind of the name of the game of scoring runs. So if this offense comes alive, I think they can be really scary. I think they can get into the playoffs. I truly do. This one has some bias.

You might be talking some de Grom in a minute. I'm not, but I wanted to go into it. first of all, the Rangers are a very good baseball team. They can pitch, see you're going opposite field. Like the Rangers in this entire year felt like a team that could just go on a run. I don't think they have yet. Maybe they still have it in them at the end of the year here. The Jacob de Grom thing, second fastest to 2,000 strikeouts.

Either way you want to slice it, games or innings pitched, which I think is kind of cool. And my take on this is because of the internet, like no one thinks anything as cool anymore. Like, we've just seen it all. We've just seen it all, dude. How many videos have you seen of some amazing, like, shark jumping out of the water? I don't know. That's where my mind goes. But you just seen so much stuff like nothing's cool anymore because you've seen it.

Like, this is really cool. Like, 2,000 strikeouts. What Jacob de Grom is as a pitcher is really, really cool. Like to be, you know, on pace to be one of the greatest of all time, deal with some injuries, can't stay on the field. TJ to last year making 30 starts, 172 innings. This year pitching a full slate. He's 38 years old right now.

And we're seeing, like, truly, like, I don't know. And what number he is. This is one of the greatest pictures we've seen in the game, dude. So, like, enjoy what you're seeing here. It's incredible. The story's about DeGrom. Like, go listen to former teammates talk about him and kind of his what he does.

Yeah There's a much easier argument for one of the most dominant pitchers of all time Because you mentioned the starts It's the second fastest buying Randy Johnson And you mentioned the innings It's the second fastest to Chris Sale which, so he's, if you only did right-handed pitchers, which a lot of the guys that have pitched in this game are right-handed,

he's the fastest to that. He also hit a home run off Chris Sill in college. He was a shortstop. He didn't pitch his first game in the big league, so he was 26 years old. It's crazy. And let's see what's next for him. Like, you know, him turning down that Braves trade,

if the Rangers do make it and he were to advance them, then it's like, oh, Jacob de Grom's a man. If he doesn't, I don't know. It's just weird how we view it through different scopes. But his first strikeout, Mark Tashara, his 2000th, Abamelik Ortiz. My first baseman and my first basement. I watched his post-game interview.

I was just watching the game and just came on. David Murphy is, you know, good ballplayer. Sure. He's doing the pre and post game, or I don't know if he calls the games as well, but he was doing the interview with him. And DeGrom's answers were just, like, so good. And, like, for some reason in my head,

he's, like, always short with reporters. He kind of, like, went in and talked about a new grip he has on his slider, how he, you know, it wasn't really working for him, and he found it in the bullpen. I'm like, that's scary, dude. Right. Like, if he's tinkering now and, like, hitting another level at this point in this season,

where the Rangers are at, okay? I was just going to say he's a coin flip. I was going to say Jacob deGrom when he retires, completely missing. We never see him again or? No, that's it. Okay. That's where I was leaning.

But then you never know what some of the pitchers that are just like, if that's what I do, they just hang around other pitchers. I don't know. I guess my deGrom window opened a little. He's going to drink. He's going to drink Mountain Dew. and go fishing.

Sounds nice. Yeah, him and Dalton Feely might be best friend. Justin Panic. I could see Jacob de Grom and Justin Penick being great friends. Going to all the IndyCar races together. That's horrifying. Is it, though?

For both parties, it's horrifying. Trev, the rest of this American League, as I look at the Nationals, Rangers. Halos Astros, again, the Astros, all these talk about playoffs. teams and your twins, the Astros are still winning the West at 500 on the nose. They lose a series to the Angels and they kind of

get dominated. Yeah, I mean, Angels came out and swung the bats, no doubt about it. I was just checking where Zach Nettos offensive numbers are. Expected them to be better, 736 OPS on the year. He got 21 Jimmy Jackson. He does that. He got some stolen bases as well. But yeah, this is, you know,

they got to Peter Lambert in the game three. They got to well, Classon, excuse me, had a great start for them game one. That's kind of how they won this series. I don't have much on this one,

except this A.L. West is even more of a mess than the A.L. Wild card right. I think you're right. I think you're right. I mean, three and a half teams can still win it. Angels' offense most runs in three years. How do you like that? Houston's most lopsided loss in nearly three years.

Late night, Lamont had to come pitch. That's not what, that means it's getting late. Yeah. It means it's getting late. Guards take two out of three from San Francisco. I don't have much for you. Although, you know what? Joe Adele with his six RBIs in that first game,

and the unification. fit real good. This is one of the farthest homeruns I've ever seen hit at that park. Like we've seen some big boys wear that Guardian's uniform, especially in the corner's outfield, like John Kensey-N-N-Wel. Going back to Fran Mill, looking hedges there, Chris Rose's guy. Joe Adele there is looking like, svelte and big and like, like, kind of like a young soler, just like, scary to throw it up there.

Yeah, good fitting uni, no doubt about it. We're going towards that way in the big leagues, you know, a little more form fitting, if you will. I played it was more baggy. Get that Trevor Plouffe debut pickup. That would be fantastic, Rob. Because you're in that alternative old-timey uniform. Oh, that's my first homer.

Garrett Mitchell goes three for four, two doubles, that chopper to help bury the first inning of that. game. And a couple things. Garrett Mitchell's come up a lot on this show and we're kind of like, wait, who is Garrett Mitchell? Because he's had a lot of injuries. But he's playing exactly to his career numbers. 261, 356, a 777 OPS, a 114 OPS plus. His career is 113. And from a center fielder,

we take that. And as the Brewers have been the best team in baseball this year, he's one of the impact players. Trev, I will say there's a little bit of bias on this one. As was yours, because you started talking about Crespi High 22 years ago, one of my favorite pieces of John Boy Media content this year, ties to your baseball today, buddy, Chris Rose. Chris Rose loves a few things in this world. He loves baseball. He loves sports.

Loves his wife, Michelle. He loves his sons, so, so much. That's the best in Major League Baseball. He's batting 3.45 on pitches in the strike zone this season.

That's the seventh best in Major League Baseball. So go Michael Massey, go. You're one of your doppelgangers. A lot of them this episode, huh? Alejandro Kirk, get down the line, Big fella. 10 for 24, two doubles, three homers, eight runs driven him. He's got a one-to-one strikeout to walk ratio this season. You know I love that.

Alejandro Kirk, he's gone to the opposite field with 43% of the balls he's put into play this season. Keeping the hands inside the ball. You know about that, Jake. Keep it tight to the body. Get the barrel. Let it do its work. Jordan Walker. He was going through some struggles.

I think he was on batters who were struggling not too long ago while he's turned it around. 11 for 32, four doubles, three homers, 10 runs driven in. That's more like it, you big stud. He's driven in 39 runs with two outs this season. That's the most in major league baseball. So take that Pete Alonzo. Jordan Walker has a hard hit rate, Jay. 59% against left-handed pitchers this season.

It's a really tough pairing for Detroit there.

this award spoiler alert corbin carroll okay it's his birthday today interesting interesting he turned 26 so if you follow game of thrones there's a lot of great swordsmen uh throughout this series uh there's a ton of lineage there you can go back hundreds of years i picked out three who i thought are very interesting um and i picked these three because i never fought against each other you could talk about the klegaine brothers they're not in here okay i just feel like they're on a different level the hounds nuts uh greater ccline klegain turns into the mountain and he's like a zombie essentially kind of weird thing brawn should be mentioned in this but he's not okay the three that i went with are sir arthur dane uh beriston selmy and jamie lanister now sir arthur dain is kind of known

as uh the greatest knight whoever lived um he has a sword called dawn that was forged from a fallen star. So take your Valerian steel and shove it. Because I have one from a fallen star. What does that mean? He made that up one day. He made that up one day. And people are like, yeah, yeah. You hear about that?

Bereson Selmy. Basically, like, teammates with Sir Arthur Dane. Same lineage here, same timeline. They never fought. George Martin, who wrote the book, said, if these guys fought with the same gear, that it would be a stalemate, but he'd give it to Sir Arthur Dane if he had his sword Don.

I didn't know Sir Barriston was viewed as, like, in that light. Yeah. Okay. Yeah. That's where they were really, it was really stupid of Joffrey to dismiss Barriston because he had more than with Danny. I remember how rude that was, and obviously he's with Danny for a while. And I knew he was past his prime, but I didn't know his prime was.

So they give him, he's the most experienced of the group. Right. The other guy I want to talk about is Jamie Lannister. Like what could have been. Of course. Obviously, it's the hand chopped off. His idol is Sir Arthur Dane. He doesn't, they say he doesn't believe that he could beat Sir Arthur Dane.

But we all know Jamie Lannister thinks he could be anybody, especially with two hands. So we never get to see these guys fight. So I went around the outfield in the major leagues. I was like, are the guys here? Who can I go back and forth with here? So this is what I came up with. We watched Fernando and Tadis Jr. go up and rob Francisco and door of a grand slam. He's seeming he does that. I mean, like eight times a year seems like he's robbing home runs. Like he can go get it. Moves from shortstop, goes to right field, becomes a platinum glove center field.

But I don't want just defenders. The guy can hit two. He's turned it on 800 OPSs, couple of years. He had a stint obviously where he was one of the best offensive players in the game as well. So I'm giving Fran Tatis Sir Arthur Dane. Okay. Interesting. I'm going embarrassed and sell me. Even though he's not older than Sir Arthur Dane in this exercise, I'm giving that to Corbyn Carroll. Kind of tried and true, old, reliable, you know what you're going to get. He doesn't have the best arm, but he gets to balls. And he can also rake as well. He's the league in triples every single year.

He's a freaking lightning rod on the field. I don't think he gets enough credit for how good he is. I'm going Jamie Lannister's PCA. Oh, okay. And I'll tell you why. That's the best one you've had so far. Because there's some obvious reasons. They're young, cocky.

Cockshire. In my mind, because this never is settled, even though, you know, George Martin has his take. I think a two-handed Jamie Lannister takes out both of these guys. Oh. I do. I think he's the best. And I think Jamie Lannister just says that about Sir Arthur Dane just because.

But I think in his mind he takes him down. So basically that's my entire award is I want to just put these characters with guys. What I wanted to point out is almost like what the Jacob de Grom situation is, you got to appreciate guys who can do it on both sides of the ball. These guys are so electric, the defenders, but they also rake. And it's getting more and more rare to see guys who do both in the outfield. We're seeing either rakers who can't play defense or defenders who can't rake. And those three guys, and Fernando Tautis has kind of put himself back in the mix here.

It's getting more and more rare to see guys who can both hit and play elite-level defense. And so I wanted to give these guys some credit as we're going through the season, Tatis with the big game, PCA with the big game. I had to throw Corby and Carroll in there too because I think he gets lost in it. Let me know in the comments who do you think would win in a fight on the Game of Thrones side. And then let me know in the comments who's the best of the bunch. Is it PCA? I know he's had this year, but the track record necessarily isn't there, right? He's a young. It's young. Like, whatever energy that is, I see. that. Corbyn Carroll, I would bring it to, for me. Don't say it. I know what you're going to say. What am I going to say? You're a calm viper. Yeah. Because, dude, he is kind of, dude. Kind of. Over in, over in Martel, like, they kind of have the same energy. Like, I'm going to slash you up. I'm going to hit triples. I'm going to leave the league every year. He doesn't even have a sword. Doesn't need one. Fuck it. That's almost too perfect. If my guy judge was around, is he the hound? Is he the mountain?

Like, there's something there. And then, yes, Sir Barrison, well, A, as far as nicknames go, and this is just proof that the sort of the morning, pretty good. When George R.R. Martin got in the lab that day, that's tough to be. Because holy damn. Yeah.

It's a, I thought I had a better, like, rounding out the award. I think this is going to take some time for me to really wrap my head around and really, we could do that. We could do an outfielder, got to play both sides, D and hit, and we could name Game of Thrones characters for them. That's kind of what I was going for, but you do get lost. There's a lot of good guys out there in both the books and Major League Baseball now. So I went with those three.

I don't know. I think right now, if I'm talking about two-way outfielders, those are my guys. Yeah, it's tough because the first, Two are so legendary. You think Jamie wins? I don't know. What did you say happens in a fight? You fight dirty.

It's real. Whatever it takes. Jamie would go low. I don't know. I don't know if he's got that with Sir Arthur. Like, I think I'm taking Braun over peak, Jamie. No way. Talk about really fighting.

I love Sir Bronn. I don't know who you give. Yeah. It becomes a knight. That's right. I don't know who you get Braun to. Comment. For all the Game of Thrones people,

Like getting mad? Yeah. I mean, I've been in fights before. Like, this fights. About as close as I all get, yeah. Right. I mean, I don't know. Things... It's an expression.

It's an emotion. It's something, I think people, even if you haven't been in a fight or if you haven't, you know, you don't totally see red, you're still just like, it's something you can relate to that you're just filled with anger or rage or whatever it is. And I wouldn't say I have that. But going through teams over the past few years, you know, people know the Texas Rangers still torment me and I still think there's a world where I wake up and it's October 7th and the Reds and. And de Grom and Avaldi just advanced them to the ALDS, and here we go. Let's see what they've got. There was a team that won me over a couple years ago because I saw something happening. And I was like, I like this.

I like seeing a good, solid young catcher. I like seeing some position versatility from a few guys. I like seeing a new star born. The Cincinnati Reds, Trev. I saw a young lineup coming to get Spencer Steer, Christian Encarnazion Strand, who, by the way, playing pretty well for the birds right now. Ellie de La Cruz comes up.

Matt McLean, Tyler Stevenson, some Will Benson balling out that year. Noel V. Marte and the Luis Castillo trade. Then fast forward a couple years, and it's like, actually, you know, some of these hitters are going through it, but did you know the Reds can pitch? And look at Ladolo and look at Hunter Green and look at these,

here's Andrew Abbott. Andrew Abbott would be one of these good fighters. Like just trashing people in his own way. Chase Burns, welcome to the party. I'm done with the Reds, man. I think this organization doesn't know what they're doing. I think they're just kind of putting pieces together and hoping it makes people.

baseball. And man, that final game in the St. Louis Cardinals, Cincinnati Reds, five games set. So I don't know. It's five games. It's a lot going on. Double header in division in August. The red season is done if not done. The Cardinals still fighting for something. And on that final game, fly ball to left center. If it gets caught, the game is over. Look at the good people of Cincinnati. He's standing in their seats behind home plate. Not a lot of people in the outfield, although Dane Myers said it got pretty loud on that fly ball.

I won't comment on that. Dane Meyer's a guy I like who had a couple of really nice moments in this series. The ball drops and then a 5-4 win turns into 10-5 in that same inning. There's two out. Walks. Brutal. I can't imagine the pit in some of the Cincinnati Reds player's stomach as they're sitting out there watching a win turn into a 10-5 loss.

But then Trev, here comes the bottom of the 9th. And the Cincinnati Reds are battling. And its bases loaded for Sal Stewart. And he starts driving in runs. It's 10 to 9. Stevenson RBI single. And they come up. One more at bat.

Matt McLean, who grand slammed earlier in this game to give Cincinnati four of their runs. He hits a bullet to right field. Going back on it, Jordan Walker makes a nice catch. 10-9. Cardinals win. Trev, I don't know what this team is. When you bring up their team page, the Cincinnati Reds are 30th in batting average, 30th and on base. They're starting pitching, which we were like, yo, this Reds starting pitching.

23rd in ERA, 26 in WIP. This Red's bullpen, 25th in ERA, 25th in WIP. The Red's defense, 29th in DRS. So what do you do here? In an NL Central where the Cubs are back

and they've assembled what they think is the squad, the Brewers won't stop. They have 79 wins. They're over under for the year is 83 and a half. It's the only financial advice I give on this show. The Cardinals who are in a rebuilding year. We don't even want to win this year. 66 and 63.

Ali Mar-Mal, after that final game, whoever knows is my manager, and me and him both have a lot of Dornish in us. If you know, you know. Trev, he said after the game, he was going to get ready for the flight, get out of Dodge. His exact quote,

And I feel bad for the people of Cincinnati that have rolled some good crowds out there during random games. The product's just really rough. They didn't sell at the deadline, really? Like, what? I don't know. It's bad. he needs a whole re-haul. And I'm wondering a lot of conversations we haven't been able to have because it's going to be CBA and bargaining season and all that. Like, is Ellie out? Hunter

Green's out all of the next season. Like, what are we doing? So I don't know. I feel bad for Reds fans. And I feel bad for myself for a couple years ago kind of falling for what I thought was the core of a good young team. And now it's kind of nothing. my take on terry francona taking that job was he's not going to come back for some bullshit team i think that's my exact quote and uh yeah it's it's you feel like they have some good players they've done some things well i feel like they've drafted well in recent years chase burns ret louder sal stewer matt mcclain hunter green like you know they've produced some big league talent but yeah that they're just not getting the job done at the big league level tough for me to talk about the coaching stuff

My minor league roommate, Colin Calgo, first base coach there. Mortal Kombat, Pat, his brother, Chris Velika. I was a travel ball teammates with him. Hitting coach there. You know, Derek Johnson, who was the pitching coach, he took a leave. Like, he's not there anymore. He left in June this year. He was the 2019 coach of the year with the Brewers.

And I don't know what's happening over there. But I do think, and I don't mean this, I don't want this to happen because I don't want anyone to get fired. I think there's going to be some massive sweeping changes with the Reds. And I know Reds fans, you know it starts with the ownership. Can't really do anything about that, guys. It's tough. Yeah, I just.

I don't think Tito comes back next year. After a year like this, he's at an age now where I don't know what his contract status is, to be honest with you. But it would shock me if he was like, I'm running it back. I just need a team identity from them. And it was cool to see the pitching come along because Trev, you mentioned as a road player if you went to Cincinnati, you were expecting to hit a Homer

because that ballpark is a Homer park. No, it's kind of frustrating me. I'm doing this in live time, and I'm sorry to the people. Who was the Cincinnati Reds last 30 homer hitter? I think I found it. Ooh, last 30 Homer guy? Last 30 homer guy for the Cincinnati Reds.

Don't tell me it's Adam done. It's not. You don't have to go. Okay. I don't have to go that far back. Joy Votto. It was three guys in one season, the 21 Reds, which, by the way, I don't know, the 2020s have been weird. Obviously, we had a weird start.

They made the playoffs in 2020 under 500, if I remember correctly. 2021 is five years ago. So five years of Reds baseball, it was Votto 37.
