Hello and welcome to Talking Baseball. Trade deadline reaction episode. We got a lot of trades that have already happened. Then we're live for the last hour 15 to see if some new trades come in. Someone give me a bet. Just throw something right here. Hello and welcome to talking to baseball. It's August 1st.

We are an hour and 17 minutes away from the trade deadline. And we've already got a ton of trades that have happened. My name's Jimmy. His name's Trevor. Jake is here. BBD is behind the dish. It's brought to you by Seat Geek. And what? Did you do a hum?

Yeah, we found it out. We did it. Well, there's so many trades. There's a lot of trades. This episode, it's not going to be incredibly structured. It's more like we're just a hangout session, talking to the live chat, reacting to trades that have happened. And then if any come in, they will come in.

So that's going to be what today is. Also, I did order food from this place Jake Likes. And they upsell you stuff as you go. And I had no idea what it was. I just read the words. And I was like, I had never heard of that. I don't know if this is a dessert, an appetizer. It's really heavy.

It's in tinfoil. At some point, I think maybe we open it and eat it. Reveal. It is heavy. It is heavy. It's heavier. Yeah, this is like. Do you know what the word for it is?

Are we not trying to spoil it? Well, if I did remember it, it would be spoiled. This is like, for sure. There's got to be some meat in this. Maybe, yeah. I don't know. It's not a bread option. So we'll get, I have.

Oh, that was heavy. And it didn't just get smashed. No, it's very structured. The table got hurt. Yeah, so we'll eat that at some point. Is that just a five pound weight? We'll eat that at some point, Jake. Jake, your favorite trade of the deadline thus far.

And my thing on this trade deadline is you could see everything, Probably from nothing to guys leaving to some guys coming. Not really sure what to expect. Well, to be fair, that's specific to one team he's talking about. Oh, that was a quote from Aaron Boone. Today. My seventh favorite trade of this deadline is Michael Lorenzo to the Phillies. I mean, Jake Burger goes for Jake Eater and you don't even care about Jake trade?

I'm jaked out. I already jaked on. Welcome to most people that listen to the show. Michael Lorenzen. Slots in where? Jake? He's going to Philly, Trough. And he can slot in as their five.

Okay. If he performs, which he has been recently, who knows what he could be. No, this is good. This is good pitching debt for them. He's a guy that's come out of the bullpen

in past lives, too, if they need that. He's also yoked out of his mind. Yes. Yes. Oh, and he's a Cali boy. Yeah, I like seeing him because he's a... He wore the fans on the field.

Yeah. So sack. I do like that. I haven't really given it a ton of thought. I think when I was younger, I would have thought that was like super, super cool. But as I've gotten older, I'm not really sure how I feel about it.

But we like this. I don't know how we're structuring the show, James. I'm trying to talk, but there's been so many trades. Yeah, well, Jake just gave us his seventh favorite, Lorenzen. People lie all the time. General managers lie all the time.

They say things in the media that aren't true. This person's a very. No, he's not. Well, yes, he is with the right price. I think my seventh favorite, I'm just going to go ahead and say it. It's Mark Kana to the Brewers. Really? Yeah.

I think he fits in there. I think you can slot over our good boy, Sal. Maybe he goes to center field. Yeli stays in left. Mark Kana goes to right. Maybe there's a platoon there with Weamer and Sal and center field. With who? Weamer.

How do you say it? Gilly Weimer. Yeah, there could be a platoon in center field with those two guys, depending on, you know, what happens, who performs. Canada can do some first base days and Santana D.Hs. He has been listed as a corner infielder,

but I don't know, man. I think those days are probably behind him. But I like the move. We're always asking the brewers to get a bat. And he's a pretty steady bat. He's a slightly above average, probably like a 107 to 110 OPS-plus type of guy. I like it.

He plays to the Midwest crowd, too. Very basic looking. Like kind of like a generic Middle America guy. I mean, chafing. I don't know if you love that. Chafing. Yeah, he wouldn't like that. Chafing.

His personality doesn't match his look. Yes. Sure. Chafin, though, to Wisconsin. Yeah. That guy was born in Wisconsin. Like, there's going to be 20 fans at every Brewer's game being like, am I on the mound right now?

Yeah, brewers are kind of fun. I mean, we always want them to add the big piece, but Carlos Santana, Marcana, and a relief pitcher Andrew Chaffan, that's like checking every box along the way. Do you think their decisions changed when the Cubs didn't sell? What do you think they were, like, going to go after some of the Cubs? No, no, no, maybe they just weren't going to add as much.

I think the brewers were going to have the same deadline. Yeah. If they were leading division, wild car. Yeah, they do what they can do. I like that. They operate within their rules. On the Lorenzen trade, which is Jake's seventh favorite trade, just to follow that up.

Jason Stark did say that he is going to go. in the rotation. They have no off days the next two weeks. Well, six man coming. So, or they have no off days until August 14th. So they're going to run a six man rotation until then. And then you'll see what happens.

Lorenzen also two or fewer runs in 11 of 18 outings. I need that 11 to be higher for that stat to be, you know, I think you get to like 14 at 18 or 13 at 18. I like that more. 11 at 18 is close to 50% if you just kind of do like, rounding math. You round 11, closer to 10 than 20, for sure.

18. I'm going to go with 11 out of 18s much better than 50%. The Jake trade so messed up. It's 61%. The Jake trade? That's... You know they laughed about it.

That's front office as being... We want Jake Berger. Okay. Well, we'll give you Jake... Edder. Basically the same name. Eater and Burger? Jake. Eater!

If it's pronounced Eater, or you can pronounce it. eater, then you got eater burger. So who got, okay, wait, are you going to ask about my seventh favorite trade? What's your seventh favorite trade? Yeah, we are actually. De Young. That was out of necessity. That was Dalton Feeley's, no, Bichette's okay, Dalton Feeleys notes on our trade episode,

what teams want? He said, a bench bat. And it's kind of funny because you never really hear that. Just like, just a bench guy. And Bichette got injured. They didn't know the severity of it. That's out now. What's that what happened?

I believe the most recent report was that. Came back negative. They're not sure if they're going to put them on the IL. There was only one like shortstop who can hit. The Lillys run into homers. And DeYoung was it. I thought the Dodgers might go, but they went and got Kiki in other places.

But Blue Jays make that trade. And that's all they needed. Oh, baby. Two-parter. One, Brandon Donovan out for the season. Why? Cardinals. Having surgery tomorrow.

I don't know. But the big one, Jeff Pass and Los Angeles Dodgers and Detroit Tigers had a trade in place for Erod. But Erod invoked his 10-team no trade clause that included the Dodgers and the deal is now dead. Wow. Why doesn't he want to go to the Dodgers? I think he's probably saying, what can you give me? It's the only, it's like leverage. So maybe he's saying, I'll go if, but right now I'm good.

Because how much time do we have left? And I mean, how many ifs can he throw out? you can say I want a transaction fee added in a bonus if you will you can say I'll only go if I I don't know what his contract is it's an opt out right it's not an opt out after this

so okay so then he could just make up anything he can demand shit right now of course which side is it like a the Dodgers the Dodgers Is it like when realtors meet in the middle for you on a house The Dodgers would have to cover whatever he's asking for Well, unless the Dodgers turn to Tigers And say, hey, you really want this prospect?

Yeah. Cover half of Erod's fucking charter. That's the way it goes. I mean, that's why guys put out opt-out closures. I don't want a locker next to Moncy. I do want a locker next to Walker. He's probably thinking, what can I demand? Oh, you just alert to be in the trade.

I'm thinking about it right now. I think he loves Detroit. I think he loves Detroit. Could they get them like a house to live in for two months? Like where do the lines get drawn? You can do whatever you want. This is professional stuff. He says,

I want to live in the owner's house for two months and I'll go through with the trip. And no Skittles in the fucking clubhouse. That sounds like the Twins Clubhouse right now. Sick of that. Skittles? So he has his deal. Are they trying to live in the owner's house? 18, 16, and 15 guaranteed over the next three years.

He's out. He has a chance to opt out. Yes. He could say, I'll go if you full. Guaranteed those years plus tack on a $7 million signing bonus.

Dude, he could just be out. What if he's just not in L.A.? Why would you be out? Didn't Adam Jones do this? You're an L.A. guy. Why would he be out? He might not be in L.A. guy. I think Adam Jones did this

when Baltimore tried to trade him and he had like 10 and 5 rights and he said no. And then he tweeted about he was like, I want to uproot my family and shit. And then he moved to Japan the next year. And then he, now he lives in Spain. So I saw him at the All-Stra.

game is telling me. He's like, I live in Spain. He's been doing stuff with the Orioles. He's been into the splash zone. I love him. He's a great guy. He does have those priorities. Let's ramp the app up a little bit. Jake, your third favorite trade so far. Ooh, top three trade for me. I will go

Paul Sewell to my snakes. What's up with that? What's up with the Mariners doing that? You're surprised the Mariners are selling. Well, one of their strengths would be a bullpen. I mean, their pitching is their strength. I witnessed it in firsthand. He comes out to, like, a really cool, like, song out there. Like, he's the guy.

And all of a sudden they're saying, I think he signed as, like, a minor league free agent a couple years ago. So are they saying, like, let's just sell high? Like, this guy's worth a bunch and let's go do it? I think they're smart enough to know that their season... What do you... Like you've been saying, like, the Mariners can click. It can all come together.

They could go, but they are really behind the eight ball. That if they could cash in on Paul Seewald for a year and a half, get some real stuff they're looking for while still having a strong bullpen. Like, yes, you know, you're going to need different guys to step up, but they do that. They're kind of cautiously selling.

And the snakes really needed a reliever. And let's be honest, with where the snake season has been heading, if you get a pure rental, that could hurt a little bit where they get a guy that, you know, they can come into camp next year and be like, you know,

Paul Seawall could be their like bona fide closer. How much time does he have left? Like a bunch, right? Let's see. Seawald, Paul. No, I think it's a year and a half because I think he just pitched a lot for the Mets and wasn't that.

So what's the, the get back is Josh Rojas, who's had a really, really tough year this year. A 64 OPS course. This year and next year. Okay. You get that, then you get some prospects back. You're getting Josh Rojas, like I mentioned,

you're getting Dominic Kenzoni. Kenzoni. Did I say that right? By the way, Nikki Cass is out forever with me. infielder Ryan Bliss. So he had the 19th prospect, the 29th prospect, plus an infielder with a bunch of control, I'm assuming. Free agent in 2027 has had better years behind him.

I mean, that's a Mariners trade everyone all the time. So I guess I'm not, I shouldn't be too surprised. But to me, it's like, they are so close. It's depth. They're so close. Kanzone has been, he killed it at AAA this year. It's the PCL, but he's, He's 25, and he's made it to the big league.

So, like, I don't know, that's a guy that you could call up and down for your outfield, worst case for the next two years. And then, yeah, Rojas is just like a super versatile guy, which EBD was chuckling. And I know the, um, uh, the Cespitous guys were saying they traded for your boy, Jace Peterson right after that just to fill Rojas's role. So they kind of scratch that itch that way. So, um, I don't know. It's one of those trades that, hey, if the snakes do find themselves in the playoffs,

Paul Seawald could be pitching in the ninth inning for them. If not, they can say he's our guy going in next year. You have a question. Snakes fleeced Seattle? Like, is that what I'm gathering? Like, is there any other way to talk about this? Sorry, Mariners fans. I don't know if I'm out of the loop here, but you're getting the closer of the Mariners.

Right? Yeah. And then you got a utility infielder who's had a really bad year, but then you replaced him quickly with another guy who's like, Like, can, right. Same. Similar skill set. And you got two prospects.

Sounds like a good deal for the snakes. I don't know. That does sound like a good deal when you put it like that. So that's why it was the top three trade for me. For the snakes. Yeah. Playing for rings. I'll go my third favorite.

Okay. I am going to go with the Lucas G. Lito Ronaldo Lopez to the Angels. Wow. They made a lot of moves. That was maybe going to be my third favorite. I thought I was going to say that as his third favorite. I took it.

AJ Pollock that fuck. Oh, man. Oh, sorry. Actually, he said hi to me, so he's my friend again. Hey, oh. Boom, boom. I like the angels going for it, dude. I mean, how can you not?

So, you know, we talked about what else they've done, Eddie Escobar, Mike Wusakas. But, you know, they needed another starter, and they needed some bullpen help. And this was about best case scenario. And I know that package was probably out there to a lot of people. like a lot of teams were like, I like that. I didn't want the package. And the angel stepped up and paid the cost. They gave them number four,

number seven in there. Was it that? Something like that. I think it was three and four. Oh, yeah, maybe it was. But they don't have a great farm.

Exactly. So they have to go a little higher up because that was pretty steep. Yes. So, I don't know. I think that the storyline to me of them going for it. And then what are they sitting right now? They're close.

Like they're three and a half back. Wildcard, I believe. They're three-backed of a wild card on baseball reference as we speak right now. And everybody in baseball wants that. Dude, everybody in baseball wants Mike Trout to come back healthy and they want Shohei Otani

to just continue to do what he's doing and see what happens. That's all we want. So, like, them doing all these trades and that's, you know, there's more. I think they made like six moves or something like that or got six new players on their roster. I'm into it, dude. I like it. I like it as well.

I think I liked this when I was more shocked when the Angels announced that second trade with Gritchick and, um, Crohn. Who had been playing first? Trey Cabbage would get into reps. Trey Cabbage got the call up. Yeah. A little bit of moose.

Moose has been over there. And then, um, more so the locker. He's just a glue guy. Ward gets, gets hurt. So they replace him with Gritchick. Yep. That's like, that's the angels really doing it. I'm very excited for them and about that.

and I hope that they go to the playoffs, and that's where my brain is going. Like, I want to see Angels in the playoffs. So now I'm rooting for them. So my third favorite trade, since you're still yours, since you're still- I'm saying the Angels real quick. Yeah.

Moniac moves. So Mike Trout comes back. Say Moniac moves again. Moniac moves. He's got them. I thought it was like, I like him a lot. I thought that was a very, very cool guy. You guys would like him.

Does he move to left or to right? Does people call him Mickey Money? Money, Mickey. Probably. I tried to, I try to name my son. Mac. Mickey, but

Olivia wouldn't let me. Also, Kelly. Okay. Think of all the badass Kellys that are out there. Kelly Slater. Kelly Johnson.

Kelly Johnson. Bad news bears. Kelly Leak. Yeah. Kelly Kapowski. Kelly Leaked. All over them kids in that movie. He's spoken heaters and riding a motorcycle.

I watched that. I don't know if that's cool or not. I'm pretty sure that. I watched that movie the other day. That's out. It was like very cheap. My third favorite trade, and this is going to surprise people.

Okay. It's kind of a meme favorite. is the Dodgers grabbing Lance Lynn and Joe Kelly. I made a little reaction. You guys probably already talked about it. He's starting right now, isn't he? But so much, who is, who is Lynn? Is it a home game?

The heck, Dodgers? It is at home against the A's. Oh. So let's get started off from their right foot. Because my, I've been having so much fun. I don't think Lance Lynn might be part of the playoff picture for the Dodgers. That's where the Joe Kelly side comes in. But I've been having so much fun picturing Lance Lynn on the mound in L.A.

Okay. In Dodgers uniform during a sunny, hot day game. Oh, yeah. No undershirt. And like wincing because the sun's really bright. Oh, yeah. And kind of like sometimes at Dodgers Stadium, the sun is so bright on the mound. It's reflecting.

like off the uniform, makes the uniform look like a mirror, like a reflection. Like I just really enjoying that image of that and how much attitude the Dodgers just brought to their mound. And, but yeah, Jake talked about seeing Joe Kelly, like he will be in the playoffs. So I'm excited about that as well. Sixth inning, big game. Here comes Joe Kelly. Just chomping gum. Any, any.

I like him because he'll pitch in any inning. Like, what do they call? Not sure where his fastball's going. Like, I think if there's guys who are actually effectively wild, I think Joe Kelly's one of. of them. We did the over under on walks for him and it was crazy high for a reliever. Are you guys able to use a fire extinguisher? Just if I put one in front of you?

I don't know if I've ever used one, but I've seen my buddy when in college we had a buddy who would routinely if you pass down on the couch spray. Oh, it's tough. It's tough. It just washed off. It never happened to me. It never happened to me. But our buddy was just like dust. Twice, right?

I think he did it to Ken twice. Okay. Well, twice is pretty much. But more than once. That's probably the only two times that he has been somewhere where Ken was sleeping in a fire hindrance was next one. Right. So it's two for two on opportunities seized. I just,

Well, I just was saying that Joe Kelly is a fire extinguisher because he comes in, puts the flames out, any inning, third, fourth, fifth, sixth, seventh, eighth, maybe even the ninth. So I dig it, man, and I don't know. Where did you guys rank in your trade rankings? Where did you guys rank the Jamer Candelario to the Cubs trade? I have that a solid 10th.

10 on the nose. Yeah. I'm a little bit higher on that one. The reversal of fortune for Cubs fans is something that I feel like. makes it higher on my list because we were talking two weeks ago about belly's gone and like this is exactly why they brought him in they bring him in on a one-year deal they flip him they get some prospects their windows coming up next year shit Marcus Stroman they can't get him extended we'll figure it out and all the sudden we're adding

yeah and and and you know in a market that doesn't have a ton of bats and he and here's one the better bats and they got him and here's where everyone gets upset with me and my blah blah blah old band takes the 500 cubs who have three teams ahead of them buying at the deadline is a state of baseball that I do not enjoy why go back to less wildcard teams and put all the best rentals on the top four teams and each league and let me like to be like basketball and let me know it's not like it's what it used to be and let me see the best teams utilize the rentals and the playoffs no the fact that the 500 team is buying to just exist a little longer sucks.

That's not why they're buying, bro. I feel like they're buying because they need to give their fans something. Dude, this is the way I look at it. I swear, it's time now for a lot of these owners too, and because you can get in the playoffs with a 86 win, 87 win season. Whatever it is. The Cubs did a bunch of moves. I would be for it.

I don't, I mean, what do they necessarily need? I don't know. The angels are in similar position, but they went out and fucking... I think their roster desicitated that. In M-I-M-O. I'll say this.

You're both right. No. Go fuck yourselves. I think when you look back at this deadline, the Jammer Candelario trade has the number one we could look back at this and laugh. Because if the Cubs have a bad week,

they drop back to three games under 500. They're playing the Reds right now. Like if the Reds give them the business this weekend, you're going to be sitting there like shit. But you're also right, We're like, screw it, man. Your team fought. And like, it's Wrigley.

And they just built that beautiful draftings. They built so much around the stadium for people to go spend their money. Like, they want more people to be there, dude. For the business of the Cubs, it's kind of the right move. And if they do get one of those 2% magic seasons, which I know you don't like the fan necessarily dreaming of that because it's not a good argument. The business side of it is a fun argument and go, like, do I believe in the Reds? Not really.

Do I believe in the Brewers? A little more. You said it. I mean, Reds fans are mean, bro. Well, whatever fan... Could the Reds win the Central? Yes. Could the Reds miss the playoffs?

Absolutely. Whatever team gets really good, their fans are mean because they tune into shows because they're so excited and I think everyone's going to talk nice about them. And then you're like, well, you know, who knows? And then they're like, well, look.

I think the angel situation is almost the same. Talk about my team. Wait, you don't believe in my team? Fuck you! It's the same with the Angels. I think Artie Moreno is trying to get some like PR.

Hey, if you want O-Tani to even talk to you about coming back, you needed to do what the Angels did. I don't think so. Always quotes down the stretch. Tani's like,

I want to go somewhere where I can win. I want to go to a team that's going to win. I've said many times on this show what I think it's going to take to get O'Tani. And I think that's part of it.

He's going to want to go to a good organization where he can play in the playoffs. 100%. But there's multiple of those. you can talk. I mean, shoot, the Orioles are one of those now, and they weren't that way last year, the year before that at all.

So getting Otani is going to require a very unique contract. I think there's going to be a lot of stuff that he's going to ask for. I don't think he's going back to the Angels to be. I don't think he is either, but I don't think they're out of it. Even if they traded him, I don't think they would be like, oh, he's not going back.

You got to do. And we know they were in on E-Rodd, so yeah. Dodgers are searching for a pitcher. But what's weird is... Flaherty is Celastigo. He will get traded. The Dodgers, when you really break down, like, they're pitching. Like, I think bullpen, like, the bullpen's actually been a lot better over the last, you know, four weeks, five weeks.

But if you look at their pitching, like, if Kershaw comes back good, whatever, great. He's Kershaw. Great. Julio Rias hasn't been pitching. Great, but he's Julio Ruiroes. He's going to be fine. Catter-D. going to be fine.
