Hello and welcome to talking baseball. A week out from the trade deadline. We had our first and we had some big series. Mizorowski's a freak, huh? We'll talk about that and a whole lot more. Let's talk ball. There's ball to be taught. Let's see.

There's a conversation. My good personal friend, Pete Cromstrung, is going to win the MVP. Things are good. I told you guys I hosted a sleepover for my son's birthday last night. Just, I think it was eight, 11-year-olds. And they're all just like they think that, like they're at that point now where they think they're cool and old and like mature. Boy. Yeah.

Fun times. We did a VR. Habachi and then I bought a projector screen for my backyard and they watched a scary movie outside. Went in the pool. Good times. What movie? What movie? Some scary movie.

Okay. I hate scary movies too. You know that. They're scary. I don't want to watch them. I do too. So anyways, that's all going on. The Marlins, what the heck is you doing, baby?

Trade deadline. We'll be live on Monday. A week from today, we'll be live talking deadline, Jake. Yeah, watching it all break. And right now, it's rumor mill season, whether it's teams or players talking about, yeah, no, the twins are buying. Great. That's fantastic.

My Marlins, oh, God. They were buying. they might be selling pop. I don't know. We've got a couple more days to figure it out. We did have the first trade. I'd like to talk that over with you a little bit. I don't know if that's A.L. or NL.

That completed a raise sweep because they shut out the guard dogs and back-to-back nights. Nick Martinez and how good he has been this season. The Houston Astros teams fighting for their lives. They do it. They win the first two games against the Chicago White Sox down five nothing. How's your six run eighth inning? Wow. Get her done. Josh Hader comes in, shuts it down. Bad, bad Hunter Brown.

Baddest man in the whole damn town. He's back. And he has his best star for Houston. and the White Sox, unfortunately, they had more on their side. The Murakamis. Mom and Dad throw out the first pitch, so Mooney hits two home runs, one for mom, one for dad. That's called being fair.

On his bobblehead day, some people have it. I don't. Atlanta Braves take two out of three from the Baltimore Orioles, and it took two extra inning games to decide it. Despite Trevor Rogers and Christian and Carnaccio and Strand's best ever in that first game, Matt Olson with the three-run homer. You know baseball Jimmy. Jimmy baseball was involved.

Dylan Beavers broke the dam in the ninth inning to get the walk off. And then the Braves, yeah, that wasn't good. But he's batting leadoff for them sometimes. How do you like that? Braves get it done in the final game. Ozzy Alby's bad play, Ozzy Alby's good play, Austin Riley game winner. The Toronto Blue Jays took on the Mighty Red Sox, and the Red Sox took two out of three because that's just kind of.

kind of it. Dylan Cease. You might hear more about him later because he had a special start this year. But my God, the Boston Red Sox, Siegler and Raphaelah, sure, four hits from Tony Siegler. And then on the final game, Armed and Rangers, he actually goes by Ron Hare. Now, back off the aisle and he shoved. Red Sox, they take the final game of the set to take the set. They're finishing up a four-game set today. So let's see what happens. Right now, the Rangers have taken two out of three. They took the first two games. Jake, how's your burger? Three RBI. Nate Avaldi drops it in that second game. But Dominic

Canzone, did he save the Mariners season? Maybe we'll find out a couple hours, but his massive night helps Seattle not be in the doghouse completely, and the A's versus the Minnesota twins. A's might have won that first game, sure. Treves Jacob Lopez.

Wow. Wow. Redemption series. But then it's Alan Rodin. It's Connor Prelip. It's these twins who have nine, two and one in their last 12 series? Okay, Ryan Cridler. You're going to hear about him. Twins take the set.

We're going to start in the Senate. trowel because my twins are making a push right now and the guard dogs i don't think we've got there yet down bad um the chicago white socks are in first place 55 and 49 for them two and a half games ahead of those white socks who are on an l five or excuse me of the guardians who are on an l5 right now sitting one game over 500 54 and 53 my twins creeping up on every time we get to 500 we lose games. Yeah. 53 and 54.

Day off today. No big deal. We're three and a half games back. Tigers is 50 and 56. Kansas City Royals 45 and 62. In the east, 62 and 43 are your Tampa Bay raised. They're on a three game winner because of the sweep.

The Yanks, 59 and 46, three games back in that division. Red Sox still playing good ball. 54 and 50. There are seven and a half back in the division. Orioles have no catchers left. 51 and 55, we'll get into that. And the Blue Jays, 48 and 50A, that's, that's, that's the most surprising thing of the season

is how bad the Blue Jays are. I think that's, that's fair. For some. Okay, you knew it, huh? You knew it. It's a lot of, interesting. A lot of magic dust, although Max Scher comes back. Yeah, they need it.

Let's do a trade quick, because we had a trade. It's what's on everyone's mind, maybe more than some of these, you know,

Royals Kitty series. Connolly Early, fun name to say, broke onto the scene with the Red Sox, was shoving. Kind of like, okay, looks like Kershaw a little bit in the face, just being honest, goes toe to toe with Cam Schlittler in that do or die game three, wild card game. Had an amazing debut last year in his first couple starts. It was like nine starts, so I should be nicer than that.

This year, a baby set back, but a 344ERA pitching at Fenway. We talk about that. He's 24 years old. Some of the metrics don't love him. But, again, for a young pitcher, he's fine. Trated for Curtis Mead, who's been a big part of the Nationals lineup this year with a lot of third base in there. kind of a post-hyped prospect, 25 years old, has hopped around from different teams.

He kind of got caught up in baseball and 40-man rosters and getting an opportunity, not getting an opportunity. He got it with these gnats. He's been mashing right-handed power, which we've talked a lot about Trevin, how many teams are looking for that. We rarely see the one-for-one trade with two young baseball players. Interested to get your thoughts on it. It's need for need.

these are the trades that we like. I mean, they're going to affect the teams immediately. And if you look at both these rosters, I mean, yeah, they fill whole. So the Nationals high-scoring offensive baseball desperately needed starting pitching. And now they get a controllable lefty to go along with. Basically, it's been Cade Cavali. It's been Foster Griffin. Now it's going to be early.

And then, you know, they got some guys at the back end that they make some match. There's a lot of bulk stuff going on with them. But they needed these innings. So they're getting that. I love this for the nationals. I think both teams think they're selling high on these guys, right? Isn't that the case? I think a little bit.

There's something to be said in that thought process that if a team is willing to move on Connolly early, and again, he broke out and is he taking a step back? With all these young pitchers, it's always developing their pitch mix and what's going to be the next step for them. But yeah, the Red Sox clearly feel like they found something in Connolly early. and then the Nats did find something in Curtis Mead.

I mean, literally, you know, off the waiver wire, turning him into a young breakout lefty pitcher. If you had told them when they brought Curtis Mead in, that that's how this ended, they all would have signed up for it. Yeah, Curtis Me got taken off the roster of the White Sox earlier this year. Kind of like imagine him on the White Sox now if he had been producing this same way. That's a completely different ball club right there. But, yeah, again, I, I,

I'm, I am, you could say like, okay, well, Boston maybe overpaid for a right-handed power bat, but what, like, you have to, I always says, you have to give up good players to get what you need. You can't just like, you can't win every trade or fleece every trade. Like, you're, Craig Breslo had a great quote about this saying, um, sometimes it's about just like making your team better. You're not going to win the trade, but I'm going to make my team better by making. making this trade, then that's what should be the main source of your inspiration for trades. Like trying to win trades is a fool's errand. It truly is. If the person you're trading for makes your team better, isn't that what the point is? So both these teams are doing that.

I'm in on it. Right now, Curtis Mead is the second best hitter on Boston's team. Like they need that. They need some thump. He's going to provide that. I'm curious. to see where they put him in the infield. Are they just going to move Caleb Durbin over to second base? Caleb Durbin can pick it at third base. And Curtis Mead is more of a mixed bag, like not, like he's just serviceable, if you will. I think that's the thought process. He's going to play some third base.

Caleb Durbin is going to move over to second base. Tell me if I'm wrong about that. But yeah, I don't know. This is something that we all should be excited about. This is the way trades are meant to be. You better not be taking my guy Tony Seagler out of the lineup. I'll tell you that much. I know, I know. Hey.

Yeah, for, for Boston, they're making a bet on Curtis Mead that the light bulb went on, which we talk about this all the time with baseball players. Sometimes it happens. Sometimes it never does. But Curtis Meade is 25. Like he got called up with the raise in 23 as a 22 year old. Okay, that was nice. And yeah, this guy, he was on the top prospects list.

He was top 50 guy. But he hopped around. he didn't have the results. You know, never got, I don't want to say he got full run, because I think he got a look, but, you know, his most games played in the season was 90, and that was last year in 2025, where he was on the raise and then the White Sox.

And the career numbers, 244, 321, a 709 OPS. That's a little below league average. And a lot of that is being boosted by this season because he has an 852 OPS. And he's been part of the Nationals, which I just made up on the fly and I think is cool because these nationals are out of their mind. Trev's going to talk about them a little bit

and like, do I believe offense is contagious? Like a little bit. It's not going to really help you hit the ball. But they're making a hitting versus pitching argument. I think it's a lot tougher to find hitting than pitching right now because of how good pitching is in baseball. And Curtis Mead's profile with Fenway, he's a big old pull guy.

Yes. So if Curtis Mead has been unlocked for, the next four or five years of baseball as a pull righty at Fenway to some sort of degree, they've probably done well on this trade. The scary part is, what if this is an outlier? What if the Nats had, they're using their magic sauce this year? And Curtis Mead isn't that guy? Did you just move a young lefty, which that's like a sin of baseball?

I remember I came on here laughing one time. I think it was a Steve Phillips thing. Like, you always got to give lefties a couple more years. It's like, yeah, dude, that's baseball, bro. That I don't know. There's a chance, Connolly early, isn't every day, or take a ball every fifth day starter, which the Nats have needed horribly.

I don't know if he's a two. I don't know if he's a five, but God, we can use those guys. Every team needs eight of those guys. He's definitely a guy that's going to do that. But again, like, if you think Mide's swing profile fits Fenway, which it does, every team is star for right-handed power, which they are.

You know, I don't want to call this striking early, because it's like it's a week from the deadline, but I think this is a great move. It is. You address your need. How many left these can the Red Sox even put in their rotation? Jake Bennett came out of nowhere this year. Made basically Connolly early expendable.

You know, it's this to me was a sign of a, I mean, look, are we giving Craig Bresloops all of a sudden a month after saying like this guy needs to be run out of a box? We didn't say that. People were saying that. People said that. People were like ready. Get out of here, see you later. And now all of a sudden we're praising this guy, this turnaround. The team's in the playoffs. They're making good trades. There's nobody having a better time. Because when you taste like defeat the way that Breslow did, it makes victory so much sweeter. And he's feeling that right now, dude. feeling it, Jake.

Red Sox, yeah, they still have four lefties in their rotation. Suarez totally been at Sandoval right now. I will say it's coming back before the playoffs. That's what the last update was. I will make it back for the playoffs. Good. Another lefty. I have a half-silly, half-serious thing.

Are the nationals betting against Australia? Oh, that's like, you know, I was going to point that out. All of a sudden, we got Australian hitters now. I mean, Bazana was the one-one pick. He's an all-star this year. Curtis Mead coming kind of out of nowhere. Curtis Mead has the third-most home runs in Aussie history. Let me guess.

I didn't see this note. This is a Jake note. This isn't. Oh, this is okay. Don't have this in his mixtape. This is different analytics here. Oh, my gosh. Third most.

I mean, I'm just thinking of Australians that I know. So this is not going to be a great guess for me. I'm going to go with Glenn Williams. Glenn Williams. Not in there at all. Okay. Luke Hughes, not in there. Glenn Williams, zero major league home runs.

Really? Yes. I'm just naming Australian ballplay. 13 games in 902 OPS. The first one is he's like a kind of famous broadcaster now. He was like the guy who paved the way for us. Rohn Smith. Dave Nielsen.

Dave Nielsen. Wasn't Smith a pitcher? I'm going to cut you off at the past because you've just insulted the whole country somehow. Okay. Joe Quinn, who played from 80... Don't know either of those guys. What's up with that? Joe Quinn played from 1884 to 1901, so he shouldn't be in anyone's bag.

Curtis Meade with 22 career homers is your third most homered Aussie in Major League Baseball history. I feel like I'm an expert on Aussie baseball players because the twins, we were the pipeline for a long time. Luke Hughes is sixth all time with eight homers. Yeah, man. Bazana just passed him. We had some, I got some stories about these Australians. I'll share off-screen because it's actually disgusting.

Only 10 Aussies have ever homered in the big leagues. Now look, we have. A one-one pick. Very interested to see the next. You're saying the Nationals, are, they got the ick. I'm just saying, I don't know how they're doing their analytics, but could Curtis Mead is their part of this season

and Curtis Mead's performance that can be outlierish? The Nats clearly think that, okay, Trep, we said this about Connolly early. The Nats clearly don't think Curtis Mead is who he's playing to right now. Otherwise, I don't think they trade him. You know what I'm saying? I disagree because this is how I think they're thinking about this. what's their guy's name? Toboni.

Toboni, Paul Toboni came from the Boston Red Sox. Yeah. So this is what I think. I think Toboni's like we got this guy. We didn't claim him off.

Oh yeah, we claimed him off waivers. We had him for like a trade. Who knows? Like a nothing trade. It was a nothing trade. A nothing trade. We coach him up a little bit. He walks some more.

He's striking out less. he's making better swing decisions, we can turn a minor trade into a controllable left-handed starter. You're going to do that every single time, especially when your offense is doing what they're doing. And you got guys like Abrams and Wood and Luis Garcia Jr., like that's not your weakness.

Your weakness is pitching. It all works out. It all makes sense for the nationals. It all makes sense for the nationals. And then Red Sox are just dealing from a position of depth. That's it. I mean, this is the way it's supposed to work, people. So cherish this trade.

Put it in like the, what's the top tier? It's not a tier. What is it again? S tier? It's an S tier trade. Wow. I can't believe I just said that. Everyone's a little disappointed that this is where it ended.

And I'll say- Peak trade. That's what the kids say they say peak a lot. I'll say this. If we had our White Sox front office representative on right now, they would tell us. Curtis Mead was traded for Boston Smith. I don't know.

74 minor league games, he's won Dotton. Okay. So who knows? Who knows how this lands? And I think that's kind of the, if you're someone hammering the table, you're out of your mind because between injuries, between the path of baseball,

nobody really knows what's truly next for Curtis Mead or Connolly early. But we're going to find out. And you rarely see GMs go for, one for one on the tail. I mean, everyone brings up the jazz chisholm for Zach Allen, but they were still like, they were baby babies.

Baby babies. Okay, we talked about the trade. That's good. Yeah, nice. That's good. In the American League, Trev, so maybe we'll be a little higher and tighter than normal. Ray sweep the guard dogs. It ends with dominant pitching from Nick Martinez, Andrew Rasmussen. Some of the

race's bottom of the line of numbers are going. And as we talk about what is the American League. This is the best team. First to 60 wins. Yeah, Martinez has been fantastic for them. I feel like that's something that they're not getting enough credit for is signing him. 11th quality start this year that leads the team.

I mean, he threw, what is it? Six innings, no runs, 84 pitches, just kind of mixing speed. Changeup was really, really good. He's just filthy, man. And again, I always mention him. He's like one of the prototivial guy, like guy I wouldn't want to face just because he throws a bunch of pitches, mixes speeds. Really hard to game playing against. Yeah, then you mix in a little Drew Rasmussen against freaking Parker Messick.

That's a matchup, people. I think that's an underrated, like, heavyweight fight in the starting pitchier realm. And the rays do it because they can play a little bit of small ball. We know they can, the top of the lineup can kind of bang, and then the bottom of the lineup can play some small ball. Chandler Simpson had some very interesting. times on the base pass during this series but ends up working out in the end they sweep the guards who

one game over 5 L5 for them it's interesting you know look they're not a good they're not a great offensive team so when they run into some pitching like this they have to match it which they kind of did

but the razer the rays are too good at home 38 and 15 at home they swept 10 different teams this year Whoops. Dominant home. Third best home team in baseball going back to 2017. Yanks and Dodgers.

Oops. Yeah, I guess I, little Cleveland head tilt as Stephen Kwan had been one of the worst hitters this season, he's kind of bounced back. Cleveland, we know they operate differently. Like, what the hell could their trade deadline look like? And by the way, I guess it's a trade episode because it's trade season. Brian Baker. Oh, so his name.

Closing. Just did. Closing games for the Tampa race has been one of the best closed in baseball this year. Traded from the Orioles in division for a first round draft pick. It was technically listed. It was the 37th pick in the draft. Talking baseball legend. This is going to be a good TBT for some.

Slater de Brun. Oh, wow. Slater de Brun, who I've been. believe was our Pacific Northwest rapper slash baseball player. Let's do our annual Slater DeBrun check-in. How's he doing? Sheesh. So they got the comp pick and pick Slater.

Correct. Okay. Slater DeBrun has played five games for rookie, rookie Tampa, and he's 1.134ing. That a boy. Wow. Cleveland.

Oz is involved. Okay. Three and seven since the break. 12 runs in those 10 games. Oh, shoot, in the seven losses, excuse me. 12 runs in the seven losses, and they went one for 14 with runners in scoring position to Caesar. That ain't going to get it done.

That's what they have to do to win as hit with runners in scoring position. Did not do it this series. Trev, again, this episode might be getting lost in the sauce, but I just saw Dahl have a panic and I didn't put it together at first. Slater de Brun. was then traded back to the race in the Shane Boz trade.

Oh, my gosh. Yeah, dude. So it ended up being Shane Boz for Brian Baker and some. And some. And some. Rays continue to be one of the best teams, guardians. What are they going to do? Speaking of the Chicago White Sox, we know what they're going to do.

Jose, your kitty, show me your cat. they salvage a set against Houston. Houston with some different interesting numbers all over the board, I believe after Saturday Night's game, they were in second place in the west to the third place Seattle Mariners. Yo. Yeah, I debated giving Hunter Brown my standout because that is something that could be some material change for Houston

if they have their ace back instead of not. A big comeback win in game one. and then it looked like they were going to have a chance to get the sweep, but it was Murakami Day at the stadium. Yeah, I mean, that was a huge inning for the Astros in that first game. Cam Smith, who'd been struggling, put some extra work in the cage. He turns on one, really nice swing. When he's right, his swing is really nice.

But hey, biggies are tough, man. And then Hunter Brown looking great in the second game. Sean Burke actually pitched really good for the White Sox as well, but just not enough to kind of keep up with Brown. and then you're right, Murakami. I mean, the best a version of the White Sox, I'm not going to say is when Murkami hits two homers, because that's good for that.

But they need him kind of like anchoring the middle of that lineup. We saw that in game three. 38 and 29 when Murakami starts. So this was his first and second homer since coming off of the IL. And yeah, both of his parents there. They threw out dueling first pitches. Bobblehead Day. Some guys just have whatever that is.

Astros had won five in a row before that. Can we do a Chase Midrall check-in? You sure can. Yeah. I just want to make sure I'm on top of the statistics for our guy, my guy, guy, chase. Do I just have a thing for, like, he's like Kyle Farmer. He's like a young Kyle Farmer, kind of,

maybe a little bit better player. Sorry, Kyle. They look the same to me. I think it went from Dozier to Farmer to Chase My Dr. There's a chance. I realize anatomy doesn't work like this. I think if there was a, if you and I had a child in Major League Baseball right now, it might be Chase Midroth.

And those guys go one for 24 in the series, I believe. So that's, again, all three games come down to basically the final inning out. And something like that matters. Yeah, I mean, the Orioles had a huge chance.

I think they loaded the bases also in the 10. 10th and then Gunner hits into like a double play. They don't score there. Had a chance to walk it off. And then in the 11th, you're talking about, yeah, they intentionally walk, load the bases for Huff.

Man, it was 7 to 1 at one point. Ryan O'Hern and as Merlin Valdez breaking Pirates' Rookies' records, pirates salvage that set.

The Diamondbacks, Daltz, snakes, they take game one, three-two against these Washington Nationals. But then they ran into the bad men. C.J. Abrams and James Wood, my God. Historic, historic numbers in the middle of that Nationals lineup. Most homers by a shortstop in Nat's history. James Wood has 30 of them. People, they take two out of three. The Dodgers do the same to the Mets.

It was almost a sweep. But then his name is Tyrone. Tyrone Taylor with a big comeback in that final game. But again, this was a lot of Dodgers. You want, like I said, you want to get his fastballs down for the most part. So you're trying to look really just like middle for those fastballs because you don't, I mean, you want them down, but again, it's just really difficult to pick that up.

If he throws that curbel right in that window, like where it starts, I don't know, a couple inches below the letters. It looks like a fastball. out of the hand, then ends up in the dirt. And that's where he should live or try to. And he did.

Dominant against the Phillies 7.1. Yankees offense is still in a weird spot, man. No judge. Belly goes on the aisle. So they're off, like their lineup in that third game going up against Chris Sanchez. We could have fired up the Talking Yanks episode before that game went down. And they showed a little bit of fight. Phillies are playing sloppy, man.

it's not, they're just mixing a match now. They're just going to, I think Craig Stamman even had some quotes on it. Like, we're using all 13 guys in a variety of different ways, and we're just going to fill the innings, there there. I do think that's the future of pitching. I've mentioned that many times on this show

before a bunch of guys that can go four innings and you just kind of mix a match. You have your high leverage relievers and you have some of your lower leverage guys, but I do believe we're going to get to this point where teams do pitch like this. This is out of necessity for the pods, but hey, maybe that is the formula for them. Padres' eighth inning Magic scored more than half their runs in the series in the eighth inning. Machado won dotting since July 9th. That's 14 games. So a little All-Star break in there.

And yeah, if you're the Marlins, again, 10 games over 500, they're on pace to win 89 games at that point. After this losing streak, 12-game loser, they're now on pace to be 78 and 84. Most losses in franchise, consecutive losses in franchise history, and no MLB team has ever made the post. season with 12 consecutive losses.
