Tangle - Welcome to my TED talk.
Episode Date: July 11, 2024A few months ago I flew to Vancouver to give a talk at TED2024 in Vancouver. I'd call something like this a "bucket list" item, except I never actually imagined it was something I'd get to do. The inv...itation was more like a monster surprise, a major career achievement, and a really fun way to spread the word about what we're doing here at Tangle.Anyway, when I made the trip, we announced it in the newsletter. Predictably, thousands of readers asked about how to watch or listen to the TED talk, so we decided to highlight the video in the newsletter once the final version was released. It took a few months, but my talk has finally been published. In it, I discuss Tangle’s mission, the work we are doing, and the current state of U.S. polarization. Anyone who reads Tangle should find it interesting, so we’re sharing the talk with everyone here in lieu of a regular newsletter. While you're there, I ask that you please leave a comment (tell people to go read Tangle!) or "like" the video, which will boost it in the YouTube algorithm and hopefully encourage TED to promote it. These simple actions will drive new readers to Tangle and would be very helpful for us.Finally, I want to give a special shoutout to a few people: Tangle Managing Editor Ari Weitzman, who wrote the first draft of the talk and deserves much of the credit for how well it turned out. Cloe Shasha Brooks from TED, who helped us refine and edit it several times over — she is incredibly good at her job, and also a regular Tangle reader, which makes me like her even more. And Chris Anderson, the president of TED, who shared some of our initial coverage of the war in Gaza and then responded to my direct message on Twitter, which is how I ended up getting involved with TED. You guys all rock, and I appreciate you.As always, if you have thoughts about anything we write or that I say, feel free to let us know. But most of all: Please engage with the video and then share it, which will help us spread the word about Tangle! You can read today's podcast here. Based on Charles Yu's award-winning book, Interior Chinatown follows the story of Willis
Wu, a background character trapped in a police procedural who dreams about a world beyond
Chinatown.
When he inadvertently becomes a witness to a crime, Willis begins to unravel a criminal
web, his family's buried history, and what it feels like to be in the spotlight.
Interior Chinatown is streaming November 19th, only on Disney+.
From Searchlight Pictures comes A Real
Pain, one of the most moving and funny films of the year. Written and directed by Oscar-nominated
Jesse Eisenberg and starring Eisenberg and Emmy Award winner Kieran Culkin, A Real Pain is a
comedy about mismatched cousins who reunite for a tour through Poland to honor their beloved
grandmother. The adventure takes a turn when the pair's old tensions resurface against the
backdrop of their family history. A Real Pain was one of the buzziest titles at Sundance Film
Festival this year, garnering rave reviews and acclaim from both critics and audiences alike.
See A Real Pain only in theaters November 15th.

Good morning, good afternoon, and good evening, and welcome to the Tangle Podcast,
the place where we get views from across the political spectrum,
some independent thinking, and a little bit of my take.
I'm your host, Isaac Saul, and we're doing something a little different today. I have two big announcements. First of all, tomorrow, our
members-only Friday edition is coming out on Project 2025. We spoke to some of the people
behind the project and some of its critics, and we spent weeks researching it. This is one of the
most requested topics we've ever been asked
to cover in Tangle. We're going to be sending a free preview of it to everyone, but if you want
to read the whole thing, you'll need to become a Tangle member. You can go to readtangle.com
and sign up for our newsletter if you're not already to get the Project 2025 deep dive
tomorrow. And if you're not a paying subscriber, you'll get prompted
toward the end to unlock my take. Second, and the big reason that I'm recording this podcast today
like I am, is that my TED Talk is officially out. A few months ago, I flew to Vancouver to give a
TED Talk at TED 2024. I'd call something like this a bucket
list item for me, except that I never really imagined it was something I'd get to do. The
invitation was more like a monster surprise, a major career achievement, and a really fun way
to spread the word about what we're doing here at Tangle. Anyway, when I made the trip, I announced
it in the newsletter and the podcast. Predictably,
thousands of readers asked about how to watch or listen to the TED Talk, and so we decided
to highlight the video in the newsletter and the podcast once the final version was actually
released. It has taken a few months, but my talk has finally been published today. In it, I discuss
Tangle's mission, the work we are doing, and the current state of U.S.
polarization. Anyone who reads or listens to Tangle should find it interesting, so we're
sharing the talk with everyone here in lieu of a regular newsletter and podcast. While you're here,
I ask that you please go to the TED YouTube channel and comment, like the video, tell people
to go read Tangle. All of that will boost the video
in the YouTube algorithm and hopefully encourage TED to promote it more forcefully across all of
their channels as well. These simple actions are going to drive new readers and listeners to Tangle
and it's why we are taking a pause from our normal coverage today just to promote the TED video.
Finally, I want to just give a quick shout out
to a few people.
First of all, Tangle Managing Editor Ari Weitzman,
who wrote the first draft of the TED Talk
and deserves much of the credit
for how well it turned out.
Chloe Shasha Brooks from TED,
who helped us refine and edit it several times over.
She is incredibly good at her job
and also a regular Tangle reader,
which makes me like her even more.
And Chris Anderson, the president of TED, who shared some of our initial coverage of the war
in Gaza and then responded to my direct message on Twitter, which is how the talk ended up
happening. You guys all rock. I appreciate you very much for everything you did to make this a
reality. As always, if you have thoughts about anything we write or that I say, feel free to let us know.
But most of all, please go engage with the TED video. It is up on their YouTube channel now.
This will help us spread the word about Tangle. You just got to look up TED Talks or TED
on YouTube and you should find it pretty easily. Also, if you are just strictly a podcast listener,
TED also has a podcast and I believe they're going to be releasing the talk as a podcast listener. Ted also has a podcast, and I believe they're going to be releasing
the talk as a podcast sometime soon. Maybe not today, but definitely in the next couple of days.
So you could subscribe to their podcast and keep an eye out for it there. But the best thing to do,
the best thing to do is to go watch and share, like and comment on the video on YouTube.
I would very much appreciate it. Thank you guys. And before we get out of here,
I'll give you some quick hits because we're skipping our main newsletter today.
And then I'll remind you again, go watch the video.
All right. First up, the House Oversight Committee subpoenaed three senior White House aides to sit for depositions on President Biden's health. Number two, the U.S. Consumer Price Index for
June rose 3% year over year, and the Core Consumer Price Index rose 0.1% from May,
the smallest month-to-month increase since August 2021. Number three, President Biden announced 25% tariffs on steel product imports
from Mexico that were melted and poured in Mexico, the U.S. or Canada, as part of an effort to limit
China's evasion of U.S. tariffs. Number four, the Israeli military told all residents of Gaza City
to evacuate south to the central Gaza Strip, the second time since the Israel-Hamas war began that the entirety of
Gaza City has been ordered to evacuate. Separately, CIA Director Bill Burns met with senior Qatari,
Egyptian, and Israeli officials to discuss the remaining hurdles to a ceasefire deal.
And number five, the Federal Trade Commission plans to sue the three largest pharmacy benefit
managers over their tactics for negotiating drug prices
following a two-year investigation into their practices.
All right, that is it for the Quick Hits today. And that is it for our podcast.
I'm going to sign off with the last reminder for you to go watch the TED Talk and share it. It is
up on YouTube. We'll be back on Monday with our normal coverage, but keep an eye out for
a very interesting interview coming out in our Sunday podcast this weekend.
We'll see you guys then. Have a good one.
Peace.
