Tangle - We're off for Veterans Day, but...
Episode Date: November 11, 2024In the madness of election week, we forgot to note that we are off for Veteran's Day today. As longtime readers and listeners know, the Tangle team observes all federal bank holidays, and also takes a... couple "recesses" throughout the year around major holidays and congressional breaks (if Congress can take recesses, why can’t we as news reporters and consumers?).While we are off today, we still wanted to provide you with a little bit of content. So, below, we've compiled a list of some of recent publications and interviews that you might be interested in, as well as today's "quick hits."On Friday, we published an election-focused reader mailbag newsletter. We answered questions about the future of democracy, "missing votes," purported sexism in the election, how different news outlets call state elections, the argument that Trump is better for women's rights, and much more. You can read it here (newsletter members only). Also on Friday, we published a members-only podcast interview with Ken Block, the election fraud expert hired by the Trump campaign in 2020 to help them litigate election fraud claims. We chatted with him about what he did (and didn't) find. You can listen here (podcast members only).I recently appeared on the “Being Jewish” podcast with Jonah Platt to discuss my journey with Judaism, journalistic integrity today, and the Tangle mission. From executive producer Isaac Saul, this is Tangle.
Good morning, good afternoon, and good evening, and welcome to the Tangle podcast, a place we get views from across the political spectrum, some independent thinking, and a little bit of my take.
I'm your host, Isaac Saul, and today is Veterans Day.
So we are actually off today.
This is my mea culpa for not letting podcast listeners and newsletter subscribers know that we are going to be off today.
In the madness of election week last week, we just forgot to notify people. So as longtime readers and listeners know,
the Tangled team observes all federal bank holidays. We also take a couple of quote-unquote
recesses throughout the year around major holidays and congressional breaks because, you know,
if Congress gets to take recesses, why can't we as news reporters and consumers?
So today is Veterans Day. That
comes every year on November 11th. It honors the cessation of fighting between the allied nations
and Germany at the end of World War I. We have a link in today's episode description if you want
to read more about that. Unlike Memorial Day, by the way, Veterans Day is an opportunity to honor
all of those who serve both living and, during times of war and peace.
Today, there are roughly 15.8 million veterans alive in the U.S., which makes up about 6.1%
of the U.S. population. So today, I have some recommendations for recent content that you
might want to dive into. We also have some quick hits. But before we get into either of those,
I have to actually issue a correction, a very silly correction. In our coverage of Vice President Kamala Harris's concession speech on Thursday, we incorrectly identified Senator Bernie Sanders as D from Vermont. As most readers will know, the Vermont senator is not a Democrat, but an unaffiliated independent who caucuses with the Democrats. In a busy week, stuffed with coverage, all of our editors miss
this small but important detail. We're going to be catching up on some sleep today, yesterday,
etc. And ensure future small but important details are stated correctly. So this is our 118th
correction in Tangle's 275-week history. It is our first correction since September 30th, which was a
pretty nice streak. we track corrections and
place them at the top of the podcast in an effort to maximize transparency with listeners. All right,
with that out of the way, I'm going to give you some quick hits. First up, the Justice Department
announced federal charges against a man alleged to have been instructed by Iran's Revolutionary Guard Corps to assassinate President-elect Donald Trump.
The man, Farhad Shaqiri, is still at large in Iran.
The Justice Department also charged two American citizens with helping the Iranian government surveil a U.S. citizen of Iranian origin.
of Iranian origin. Number two, President Joe Biden will meet with President-elect Trump on Wednesday at the White House, where he will reportedly lobby Trump to maintain support
for Ukraine in its war against Russia. The Washington Post reported that Trump spoke
with Russian President Vladimir Putin on Thursday and advised the Russian president
not to escalate the war in Ukraine. Separately, Trump spoke with Ukrainian President Volodymyr
Zelensky, who reportedly felt reassured by the conversation.
Elon Musk also joined the call.
Number three, Ukraine carried out its biggest drone strike on Moscow, Russia's capital, since the start of the war,
forcing flights to be diverted from three of the city's major airports and injuring at least five people.
Russia launched a record 145 drones towards Ukraine on Sunday.
people. Russia launched a record 145 drones towards Ukraine on Sunday. Number four, the Qatari foreign minister announced that it would pause efforts to mediate a ceasefire deal between Israel
and Hamas, suggesting neither side showed a willingness to end the war. Qatari officials
reportedly told Hamas political leaders they were no longer welcome in the country due to the stalled
negotiations. Separately, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said he had spoken to President-elect Trump three times since his electoral victory and plans to send Israel's
Minister of Strategic Affairs Ron Dermer to meet with Trump at Mar-a-Lago this week.
And number five, the mountain fire, which is burning northwest of Los Angeles, California,
forced the evacuation of more than 10,000 people and has destroyed more than 130 structures in the
area. Local officials say the fire was 31% contained as of Sunday evening. And also a quick
Senate update. Jackie Rosen, the Democrat, defeated Sam Brown, the Republican, in Nevada's Senate race,
and Dave McCormick, the Republican, defeated Bob Casey, the Democrat, in Pennsylvania's Senate race,
according to the Associated Press. Separately, Decision Desk
HQ projected that Ruben Gallego will defeat Carrie Lake, the Republican, in Arizona's Senate race.
All right, that is it for some quick hits. And now a few call outs for some content of
ours that you might have missed. First of all, if you're listening to this podcast,
and you are not yet a premium podcast subscriber, a quick reminder that you can do that by going to
anglemedia.supercast.com. Doing that unlocks our Friday and Sunday edition podcasts as well as
exclusive content like interviews, and it gets you ad-free
podcasts. It's really simple. You sign up, and then you basically just add a new podcast feed
to wherever you listen to podcasts, and they all come out ad-free. And then you get a bunch of
additional content. People seem to really like it. We actually broke over 1,000 podcast subscribers
over the weekend. So thank you to all of you who are listening and have already done that.
over the weekend. So thank you to all of you who are listening and have already done that.
So speaking of some additional content, on Friday, we published an election-focused reader mailbag newsletter. We answered questions about the future of democracy, missing votes,
purported sexism in the election, how all the different news outlets call state elections,
the argument that Trump is better for women's rights, and much more. You can find a link to
that newsletter in today's episode description. Also on Friday, we publish a members-only podcast
interview with Ken Block, the election fraud expert hired by the Trump campaign in 2020
to help them litigate election fraud claims. We chatted with him about what he did and did not
find. You can listen to that podcast by going to the premium podcast member feed or by becoming a
premium podcast member. I also recently appeared on the Being Jewish podcast with Jonah Platt to
discuss my journey with Judaism, journalistic integrity today, and the Tangle mission. If you're
interested in maybe something a little different, you can go listen to that podcast by looking up
Jonah's podcast. It's called Being Jewish with Jonah Platt.
And we have a lot of new content on our YouTube channel,
including our election night live stream.
You can check that out by going to Tangle News on YouTube.
And finally, if you are a new Tangle reader or listener,
you might also be interested in checking out my TED Talk from April in which I discuss politicized language choices
and how even small changes can help us all have better conversations with people who think differently than we do. There is a link
to that TED Talk in today's episode description and today's newsletter. All right, that is it
for today's podcast. As I mentioned, we are really genuinely off for Veterans Day today,
but we wanted to check in and say hi because we forgot to let you guys all know that.
But we'll be back tomorrow
with our normal podcast and newsletter.
For those of you who get a day off from work today,
I hope you enjoy it.
Otherwise, we'll see you tomorrow.
Have a good one.
Peace.
