Starting point is 00:00:00 Hi, it's Terry O'Reilly, host of Under the Influence. Recently, we created an episode on cannabis marketing. With cannabis legalization, it's a brand new challenging marketing category. And I want to let you know we've produced a special bonus podcast episode where I talk to an actual cannabis producer. I wanted to know how a producer becomes licensed, how a cannabis company competes with big corporations, how a cannabis company markets its products in such a highly regulated
Starting point is 00:00:32 category, and what the term dignified consumption actually means. I think you'll find the answers interesting and surprising. Hear it now on Under the Influence with Terry O'Reilly. This bonus episode is brought to you by the Ontario Cannabis Store and ACAS Creative. Hello and welcome to the Taskmaster podcast. Ed Gamble here, host of the Taskmaster podcast. Today we will be talking about Series 7, Episode 2. Cracking on with the brilliant Series 7. We will be talking today to a very special guest, the wonderful Lisa Tarbuck.
Starting point is 00:01:26 We were sad not to be able to speak to lisa about series six which of course she won but we have got her back to talk about series seven and sure stuff about series six is going to come up and of course stuff about champion of champions and yes we have had many emails we will be talking about lisa's beard do not worry about that but before we get on with that fun conversation i have some exciting news we have new fun taskmaster games available taskmaster games there's obviously the wonderful board game which you can get still but there is a new board game and there's a new card game the new board game is called taskmaster secret series it's a brand new taskmaster there's a new card game. But for now let's get on with talking to the wonderful Lisa Tarbuck about Taskmaster Series 7 Episode 2. Welcome back Lisa Tarbuck to the Taskmaster podcast. Hooray! Hi Ed. Hi thanks so much for coming back on the show. A pleasure you know I could talk about this forever. Oh, good. Well, we'll talk about it for a bit. I can't promise it'll be forever. I'm sure you'll get bored of me after about an hour or so.
Starting point is 00:03:52 Come on. Come on. And it's lovely to have you back on so that we can finally talk about the Champion of Champions episode before we get on to talking about Series 7. We can chat about Champ of Champs. Your head task stays with me. know i love it i love a visual if you're working on telly then it has to
Starting point is 00:04:13 look as good as you know like radio and all the rest of it you've got you're obligated for our as it were but to actually give me that visual that I can't ever forget of a golden head on a lovely blue sky, nevermind space. Yeah, nevermind space, even just the golden head in the sky. I mean, I was very proud of myself. The truth is, I mean, it was the company who do that sort of thing invested most of the effort. I dreamt up the idea and then went,
Starting point is 00:04:41 can you do that for me, please? Yeah, but I didn't think of that. No, but talking of visuals on Champion and Champions, Lisa, we got so many emails about this that we are just going to talk about it at the top of the show. Let's talk beard. Because none of us were expecting that, of course. And it's difficult to describe the electricity in the studio
Starting point is 00:05:02 when you first appeared in the VT wearing that people lost their minds it's one of the funniest things I've ever seen but actually nobody's really said much about it and I think I've had one friend just text me and say you know three or four weeks after the event because that's how we watch telly these days just watching you on champ of champions find you quite attractive but I think great even Greg said at the time in the studio that it's sort of you sort of pulled it off really well you just because you're just so confident with it and then after the first task you were wearing it for the whole show but everyone just got used to it yeah at what point did you decide that you were going to wear the little beard?
Starting point is 00:05:45 Well, you know, when they ask, you know, you were invited to wear something. Like you had your fabulous comic suit, that Jerry Lee Lewis, not Jerry Lee Lewis, Jerry Lewis suit. Yes, I did. You knew that from the King of Comedy. That's what I thought anyway. And I was like, yeah, I really ought to make the effort and wear something. And I was thinking about, well, you wear a beard, don't you?
Starting point is 00:06:08 So once I'd got the idea, it just, I mean, obviously it is actually mine. Yeah. And I have worn it before. So it was like, oh, well, that's that then. But the trick was to keep it so that it would be a reveal for Alex and that the press packs wouldn't ruin it because they always do. They love to ruin it. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:06:31 They love to work actively against it because they want people to watch it. So they want people to reveal, they want to reveal stuff. But of course the surprise is the best bit. I mean, Alex's face when you walked in, because he likes to try and keep a straight face, doesn't he, Alex, most of the time. And it seems to have been your mission in your entire taskmaster history to make alex break so you obviously managed it with the cake up the bottom and then the next time you saw him you popped a little beard on he was really like he was very
Starting point is 00:07:00 very staring because obviously we were we we only one ep i really i really wish that we and this is just greed that you want that experience over a longer time i'd have loved two days on that as opposed to sort of just getting warmed up and the next day you could have been just a bit bloody weirder yes yeah also i think lisa and i don't i'm not i don't think this is a controversial viewpoint i think if there'd been another day, you would have won. Because I think you were easily the most consistent, but also with the most flair in the episode. I don't want to take anything away from Richard.
Starting point is 00:07:34 I do, actually. I want to take away the trophy. I think given two days or more, I think you might have taken it home. I love you saying that. And you know what? In many ways, that's kind of enough. Yeah, just to know that you would have taken it home I love you saying that and you know what in many ways that's kind of enough yeah just to know that have you did you really play when you took part in your series and then your champs and then your champ of champs I I get the impression that you pretend to want to win I mean I know you do but also there's a part a part of you that's also going along with it for the show. Yeah, definitely.
Starting point is 00:08:07 And you need to sort of, I feel like people spot that competitive nature within me. So I was like, well, let's just magnify it and really go for it. And it's fun to be an absolute arsehole. I tell you what I don't get, and I feel really behind the times, but I wonder if I've ever found it very funny, is roasting. Being mean to people. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:08:35 Yeah. I don't think, I'm very slow on the uptake to know that that's what that is. And my first thing is just like, oh, that's just really mean. And so I felt that that took me almost a week after the event to be like oh no it's that's what that is it's an actual thing it's not and I don't mean like I'm Mrs. Sainty and don't have terrible thoughts yeah of course I do but but actually um yeah that that throws me doesn't Greg does a lot of that, though, doesn't he? So when he was sort of taking apart your tasks
Starting point is 00:09:08 or anything like that, or being mean about something you did, were you just sat there going, oh, God, no. Why is he saying those things? He can't be being mean. I think that, you know, I don't mind a riff on a subject.
Starting point is 00:09:21 And actually, he's never been that mean. Also, there is that thing that you are completely accepting that if he has a bit of a dig the chances are he's you know there's a level of truth about it yeah absolutely and that's and if he's off the subject or something you're just like oh all right then we've moved on but it it still intrigues me every time i watch a new series uh because we haven't seen the films and you're seeing it for the first time on the screen in the theatre. It's that acceptance, that puppy moment where you really want, what are you going to say?
Starting point is 00:09:58 Did you like it? And it doesn't matter about your peers. It is very important what Greg says to you. Yeah, totally. So you are a bit lap doggy. It's a vulnerable moment it doesn't matter about your peers. It is very important what Greg says to you. Yeah, totally. So you are a bit lap doggy. It's a vulnerable moment, isn't it? Where it finishes. But you can sort of tell from the audience,
Starting point is 00:10:12 how it goes down with the audience sometimes. You're like, oh no, here it comes. He's not going to like it. He's gone to absolute silence. You're better at reading that because you'll get in with a dig. What was your, there was a fantastic, oh, it was taking Alex to Pompeii. Yes.
Starting point is 00:10:30 That line really, after his beautiful leg, that line just keeps on giving. His leg, you really, again, this is, you know about going for the good visual. The picture you did with Alex's leg sticking out the middle, you obviously immediately, because everyone else, they saw body parts and they were like, oh, we'll use as many as possible.
Starting point is 00:10:53 And you obviously looked at Alex and you were like, his leg is his best feature. Well, we've done bums, haven't we? Done bums, where can we go? And I'm not going there. I don't want to i'm not sure if they had to stop anyone doing that and take it out of the edit i mean i didn't even think to make alex stick his ghoulies through but um but it would have been it would
Starting point is 00:11:16 have worked for your picture because it would have looked more like a butcher shop we're of course here to talk about series seven episode two though lisa so had you had you seen much of series seven before you watched it all so this is the second time around really fell for i absolutely love phil wang yeah he's great isn't he really great i loved watching um mr a caster who i'm a fan of real big fan of yeah um and also i'd like to think he quite gets he gets me a bit more you know you you spend your life looking for people who just get you and you don't need them to get you entirely, but you need them to get you just above that sort of mark on the measuring jug. Yeah. That sort of fills your heart enough to be like, yeah,
Starting point is 00:12:15 I've got your back mate. And the girls was terrific. Cause I think Jessica is just lovely. Obviously I love Kerry. Yeah. terrific because um i think jessica is just lovely obviously i love kerry yeah and then you've got rod in there who i've known really only professionally for years but i don't know him just gunning for greg which was new which is new and hasn't really it hasn't happened since no one else can do it in the same way rod rod did it in the series it's quite dark at times wasn't it not in that particular episode but it was occasionally like oh doing it again are you but repetition that can be funny
Starting point is 00:12:51 yes absolutely he really went for it there's one thing you can say about rod gilbert is he does not let go he will absolutely hold on to it until the bitter end which is fantastic um well this is great example of uh rod taking things to the maximum in this prize task which was the boldest belt let's talk about Rod straight away it won the five points it was a belt with a massive stuffed goat's head on it that he claims Lisa that he wears to weddings which I think is absolute tripe now what's he gonna wear with that yeah mean, you know, he wouldn't wear a kilt. He's a Welshman. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:13:27 So, I mean, what's he wearing with it? Jeggings? Feels like jeggings are the only other option. Something like that. Because it's almost, back in the day, 1980s sort of hip-hop and cameo. Yeah. That's not so unusual. But by the same token, there was a bit of horror film attached to it, wasn't there?
Starting point is 00:13:44 There was. It was like a sort of like satanic ritual type yeah right belt i mean vaguely inappropriate but the i can't imagine him wearing a normal suit and because he's quite a stylish man rod really he always dresses dresses quite well i can't imagine him wearing a stylish suit to a wedding and then that massive goat strapped to the front of him no i can can you yeah i can i can see i mean possibly from his uh good lady under a level of duress and maybe only for five minutes you see it as some sort of uh some sort of um sexual game well no i don't some sort of sexual game?
Starting point is 00:14:25 Well, no, I don't. You don't. You're saying he might. I'm seeing that more in some sort of limestone cave with some nerdy wells. Him in just that and a cloak. Actually, I'd pay money for that. Just for the picture. I don't want to be there.
Starting point is 00:14:42 No, yeah, yeah. But nonetheless, did that deserve five points? I think so. It was the boldest belt for sure, wasn't it? There was no belt bolder. Phil Wang, I think, I mean, this is disappointing that Rod went so big with it because I think this was him with a chance
Starting point is 00:14:59 of the full five points. And the effort alone. Yeah, just wanted it all put together. He had his name put on it bright pink with the lines of the bloke making it it's like you know a ladybird what's it in the elves book yeah those pictures were quite sort of i don't know bavarian the lighting and stuff but yeah i um i think phil i, he wasn't disappointed because as soon as that goat's head came on, you knew, right?
Starting point is 00:15:27 Well, that's it, isn't it? That's it, yeah. The pink belt, out of all of these, that's the one I'd wear, I think. Yeah, I hear that. I could pull off the pink belt with the lion's head. What would you have done? Off the top of your head, knowing how that works,
Starting point is 00:15:41 you know, you're given the prize task, you think of your default one and you wonder, you know, there you are thinking, can I go better than that? Or is that the one? Because that's what I think Kerry did. Yeah, I mean, Kerry's was very straightforward, wasn't it? As a lot of Kerry's tasks were. I mean, you know, she's the Bosch queen. She just does it and first thought a lot of the time um i don't think it was a great one from from kerry this time no i don't i think i might
Starting point is 00:16:11 have upped the ante and maybe got in touch with um henry cooper's family and asked to borrow henry's belt yes but these are your connections lisa that you're you're exploiting there you can yeah dip into the world of uh of boxing yeah absolutely just a quickie yeah he was a lovely man though yeah I bet I bet but yeah yeah that so maybe but I don't know where I'd have gone I mean street belts I see exactly where James went with that that's you know but maybe you should have he he should have done something with it well the thing I think I think this was very underscored, James, because it was an attempt to think outside of the box, wasn't it, with the boldest belts
Starting point is 00:16:53 and having the fizzy rainbow belt sweets. And also that boy's absolutely obsessed with sugar. That's the problem. Whatever you tell him, he'll just convert it into a dessert somehow. But he didn't back it up enough. Once he said it i don't know why greg just went no one point yeah especially as jessica's was not a belt
Starting point is 00:17:11 no it honestly it wasn't a belt no and even cutting her a bit of slack which i think greg did yeah well he gave her two points yeah belt attachment but it yeah it wasn't really although nice idea yeah nice idea but the the fizzy rainbow belt suites i think underscored but i think i think we can we can agree that the stuffed goats head took it easy yeah i mean easy i would be very interested to know from the back whether that's hollow oh yeah otherwise that's a very heavy belt to be lugging around and probably pull down your trousers straight away, wouldn't it?
Starting point is 00:17:47 Absolute nightmare to wear. And also, then it becomes a good place to stash if you were going to a concert or something, wouldn't it? Do you not think that security would check the inside of the goat skull? No, I don't. I wouldn't touch it, would you? Not even with your gloves. LAUGHTER
Starting point is 00:18:08 Rod Gilbert. I got a belt. Is it bold? Yes. Let's have a look at it. It is bold. LAUGHTER APPLAUSE That is a genuine stuffed goat's head. I wear to weddings in Wales. Jesus Christ.
Starting point is 00:18:30 Have you ever worn that belt, genuinely? Genuinely, that's the belt I wear to weddings. You'll see it at the end of the show. Genuine, live... Not live, dead. LAUGHTER It's not live. Task one. Write a ten-word story before you reach the finish line.
Starting point is 00:18:46 You must be running while writing, fastest across the finish line. With the proper story wins, your time starts now. I mean, this is an odd one because proper story, they don't spell out in the task what they mean by a proper story. We had something similar when we had to do the story in a certain amount of letters you know tell us jackanory story in a certain yes the one where you sat in the pub yeah so so i i relate to this one and actually uh i think it's one of those
Starting point is 00:19:19 lovely to be outside type things nice setup um and you're either in the mood for it or you're not yeah would you have been in the mood for it Lisa do you reckon I only wasn't in the mood one morning right well it just came in with a bit of a you know I think the phrase is a bit of a shit in my pocket. What do you want me to do? You know, that's so, and then it, and then it passes probably to do with caffeine. Yeah. Yeah. You can turn out your pockets and. Yeah. Everything's fine. But, you know, I think I'd have probably, I mean, because it's 10 words,
Starting point is 00:20:04 you just need the beginning, the middle and the end. So before that was said at the end, I paused the telly and was just thinking, yeah, you just, I don't know what it would have been. But it might have been one of those where you misread the instruction and slightly mucked up, as it were. Yeah. Which is always a danger, isn't it? If you're trying to do things fast, then that often happens. But, I mean, they all tried to do it fast, apart from Phil, who has his complete unique sense of pace as Phil.
Starting point is 00:20:34 He pumbles around like Winnie the Pooh. He has no urgency whatsoever. It's brilliant to watch. It kind of is brilliant to watch. It is. And I'd have thought that Taskmaster really stitched him into the map in, you know, the most amazing way. Because I found him, I mean, obviously the yellow jumpsuit is quite eye-catching for several reasons. But in actual fact, his insouciance with all of that and you know I
Starting point is 00:21:06 mean he's not watching it he is he's on the inside looking out but nonetheless I think he's terrible he's really agreeable to watch really easy he is he's a very laid-back lovely man and and it's so in real life as well but yeah if that if that had been me who because I'm fairly sure I mean we'll ask Phil about this on the podcast when it comes on i'm fairly sure the outfit he did not know what that looked like until someone else pointed it out to him and he'd filmed a lot of the tasks already if that'd be me and i'd found out that everyone could see my my my full genitals every time against veg yeah i would have been livid i would have been devastated he just really takes it in his stride and it's lovely it's lovely to watch there's always something having been on taskmaster
Starting point is 00:21:50 there's something that you frankly and i use this sentence as well this one where you've got to swallow something haven't you there's something that um that happens that you are unaware of, that you are just obliged to live with. Yes. And of course, it might be something quite private that nobody else knows. And consequently, having it out there slightly by accident, it's healing. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:22:18 Yeah. And then you realise it didn't matter in the first place. Yeah. And actually, bigger picture, nothing really matters, does it? Right here, right now. I think that's broadly the message of Taskmaster is nothing really matters.
Starting point is 00:22:30 Yeah. Yeah, I think so. Yeah, I quite liked it. I think it was one of those, you know, it really was a little bit of a salad course, wasn't it? Get us all in the mood. Yeah, I think so. Break us in.
Starting point is 00:22:43 But I think I likedil's story that the anoga was hungry ate a child it was his i thought that was that had it that had it that was a proper story and he did think about it in a very sort of lateral cambridge way yeah um carrie's carrie carrie's and james's were less structured i'd say the boy ran to france and i love that boy and there was a girl who needed shoes and got shoes yeah not satisfying stories yeah a little bit thin yeah um rod i think probably thought too much about it he i think he went through many drafts of different stories uh and then ended up going with a joke about how it was like a self-referential joke about the man ran for exactly 10 minutes 12 seconds losing
Starting point is 00:23:25 uh and he got one point for that but you know maybe he should have got an extra point for it being for it being self-referential and all making sense within the story it was it was an interesting way of doing things but i think he lost his mind a little bit yeah i i it's funny isn't it i i definitely thought there was that um i don't think there's anything uh such a thing as overthinking I think that's a stupid thing to label anybody with because you've either got one of those minds that thinks you know say if you think a a regular mind might just take in a few bits and pieces somebody who's got a creative mind is possibly taking in 25 all at the same time and and your job as the person your your job as Phil Wang looking,
Starting point is 00:24:08 being on the inside looking out, is to pick which one's more appropriate than the other. So actually, I do think that he had one of those moments where everything shone at once almost. And I'm guessing that was quite early on in the shoot. Yeah, quite possibly. I mean, Rod is a real perfectionist I think as well and works very very hard so I think maybe that's what happened he just wanted to he wanted to make sure it was the best version of what he was doing and then probably realized later in the filming that sometimes you just have to act and go with go with
Starting point is 00:24:41 your first thought absolutely and again does it matter no of course it doesn't no because you know it's a such a surprise in the theatre where you're like oh now that's cracking or oh I'm in with a shout here yeah or oh that I thought that was bad but everyone's done it you know so um yeah I enjoyed it yes it was a good set of good set of stories and I'm glad in the end it was judged on time to be honest because it's so difficult to work out what a proper story is uh and it was one point for Rod two points for Phil three points for Kerry four points for Jessica's Albino Partridge story uh and five points for James. An ogre was hungry. Ate...
Starting point is 00:25:29 Ate a child. It was his. Thank you, Phil, and you've definitely written that. Well, written, you know, write a story is not... It doesn't literally mean write. We say Homer wrote the Iliad, but we also all understand that was probably passed down through oral tradition. So you've used the oral tradition?
Starting point is 00:25:46 OK, I'll let him know. OK. Thank you, Phil. Thanks, guys. Good story. Oh, yeah, there was a pen and paper here. Task two. The first team task,
Starting point is 00:26:04 the boys meeting for the first time before it all falls apart in later episodes. Paint the best picture of this still life. The painter must remain blindfolded throughout. The other person slash people may not move from their chairs and may only say the following words. Banana down, left, less, more, pick, right, up, whoops. You have ten minutes. Your time starts now.
Starting point is 00:26:24 Did it state that the painter couldn't speak? No, it didn't. It didn't state that the painter couldn't speak. So the other person may not move from their chairs and may only say the following words. So the non-painters could only use those words, but the painters could say whatever they wanted. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:26:43 Which is the way to go really yeah i think the girls established that banana was yes what didn't wasn't it that well carrie seemed to be using it for all sorts of things every time they cut back to carrie she's going banana banana and it's she had different tones within banana it was like it was like how the inuit language has so many words for snow but if it's tonally different then it's just it's really interesting it's a banana but actually it worked didn't it did work they really did vibe on something there I thought their painting was pretty good it was and it was I say it was as good as the boys and the boys found
Starting point is 00:27:23 that little way round of letting letting other people take James's hand and basically moving it for him. Which, do you think that's cheating? Kerry seems to think it was cheating. Well, I think there you had a moment of two younger comedians bowing to the older comedian and going along with it because they didn't know they didn't have to yeah or so so my thoughts on that is a greg ruled the the roost at greg uh rod that's interesting yeah rod uh ruled the roost there a little bit and and literally forced their hands yeah yeah he did but i did like the duck yeah the duck it was the duck is what got them the extra point and it was incredibly detailed but i guess that's what you get from letting someone control your hand they can sort of lift it off and dot the two little i's but you've got to read between the lines sometimes you've got to find out what you can and can't do that's all about lateral thinking
Starting point is 00:28:23 and carrie doesn't like that she likes just going no she's uh here's the rules yeah absolutely which makes her terribly trustworthy it shows a great you know you know you know what you're getting when you meet Kerry and and that's a really great thing because she's very honest yes yeah but less so when you meet James Acaster. He's a sneaky little boy. You never know what he's going to do. You don't actually, do you? Genuinely don't. They were both good paintings.
Starting point is 00:28:55 It's better than I could have done. There was less feeling of the still life than I thought there'd be. I thought the blindfolded painter would have maybe got their hands around it a little bit and sort of felt the... I did. I would have done. I wanted to touch it and sort of felt i did i would have done yeah i wanted to touch it to sort of examine it maybe they didn't the edit was just a bit tighter because also they used a lot more colors than it looked like yeah they really yeah they did they did go for it it was uh it was a tricky one i mean you can see watching james is interesting because when
Starting point is 00:29:21 he's doing tasks by himself he's's very much in James Acaster persona. And then as soon as other people are involved, he gets quite exasperated, which he never would do in his persona. So it's funny watching him just be himself when he's got a blindfold on and people are annoying him. Yeah. Just letting, letting,
Starting point is 00:29:39 yeah. Going with it. Yeah, exactly. What would you have done? I think I would have felt, I would have felt that a lot. I would, done I think I would have felt I would have felt that a lot I would if I'd been blindfolded I would have got very frustrated it depends who was guiding me you know because you need clear instructions um there was a there was a task in our series um
Starting point is 00:29:56 series nine a live task where David Baddiel me and David Baddiel had to do a drawing task together and basically help each other out and it all fell apart because I got angry because David can't do anything. It was a disaster. So if I'd been in that situation with David Baddiel with the blindfold, all of that fruit would have ended up smashed on the floor. Yeah. Or you could have just been holding your knockers at the back of the room, hopping. Just, you know what?
Starting point is 00:30:24 I am just, I just want to go but the thing about you in that situation is you knew what to do and you completed the task quickly because you were exasperated I wouldn't have done I would have just got really angry really angry with everyone but you just quietly got on with it still one of the best things that that's happened on taskmaster i think um it was three points for the boys and two points for the girls the thing that's gonna happen i'm livid that's chasing isn't it holding the hands and doing it on their behalf didn't stay on the card not saying anything that was not the intention of the task was it really i think you've got to
Starting point is 00:31:03 think outside the box on these things. Very much so. Yeah. Well, it's delicate, isn't it? Because sometimes, oh, think outside the box, other times, cheating. LAUGHTER You want to see the picture? Yeah. Oh!
Starting point is 00:31:17 Wow. Given they cheated, I expected more. Yeah. The duck's good, mind. Yeah, the duck's good, but the rest is crap. more. Yeah. The duck's good, mind. Yeah, the duck's good, but the rest is crap. Hi, it's Terry O'Reilly, host of Under the Influence. Recently we created an episode on cannabis
Starting point is 00:31:35 marketing. With cannabis legalization, it's a brand new challenging marketing category. And I want to let you know we've produced a special bonus podcast episode where I want to let you know we've produced a special bonus podcast episode where I talk to an actual cannabis producer. I wanted to know how a producer becomes licensed, how a cannabis company competes with big corporations, how a cannabis company markets its products in such a highly regulated category, and what the term dignified consumption actually means.
Starting point is 00:32:06 I think you'll find the answers interesting and surprising. Hear it now on Under the Influence with Terry O'Reilly. This bonus episode is brought to you by the Ontario Cannabis Store and ACAS Creative. We can wait for clean water solutions. Or we can engineer access to clean water. We can acknowledge indigenous cultures. Or we can learn from indigenous voices. We can demand more from the earth.
Starting point is 00:32:35 Or we can demand more from ourselves. At York University, we work together to create positive change for a better tomorrow. Join us at yorku.ca slash write the future. Task three. This is a lovely one. This is a simple one, but lovely. Predict what the person whose first name comes after yours alphabetically will do with one of the objects. Let's press the air horn, eat the apple or take 10 pounds.
Starting point is 00:33:04 Then do something yourself with one of the objects, let's press the air horn, eat the apple or take 10 pounds, then do something yourself with one of the objects. You also get five points if the person whose first name comes before yours alphabetically correctly predicts your own action. I love this. It's great, isn't it? Yeah, because it was a proper cat's cradle of thought. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:33:22 And actually you'd have to be clean and listen to what would you do? And then you've got to pull back clean and listen to what what would you do and then you've got to pull back and think oh what would ed do yeah um what i know let's listen interesting so i know what i would do what do you what do you think i would do loser well you know what i i definitely i think it would have been air horn. It's air horn. Yeah. I completely agree with James when he says who wouldn't do the air horn. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:33:50 Who said that? James Acaster said. That's right. I mean, I think that knowledge was too strong in him. Yes. He couldn't resist that. And he was right. Yeah, because that's surely the most tempting thing.
Starting point is 00:34:02 Like we've, we can have an apple. We all eat an apple, you know've we can have an apple we all eat an apple you know we can have that every day but you know i wouldn't have eaten because it didn't it's not one of the apples i like so i'd have ruled that out purely in you know when you have an apple and it's a bit potatoe and it puts you off apples for six months it does like if you buy an apple in the news agent yeah and it's always like it's like a snowball inside it's horrible not uh ruined yeah what what do you what do you go for in an apple a pink lady yes from the fridge uh no interesting i might there are apples in the fridge at the minute because at the moment i am neck deep into peaches
Starting point is 00:34:48 so so why does that mean the apples are in the fridge because the peaches are out because i'll take one to work on saturday but i i want it to stay in in good shape for fear of the snowball thing yeah and and you're not you're not deep into peaches most of the time so there's not there's no apples at home at the moment because you take really good at the minute, peaches. Are they? Yeah. That's a good tip. My fruit recommend.
Starting point is 00:35:10 We always try and do one on the Taskmaster podcast. One fruit tip. Hot fruit. We've had banana and peaches and apples. I don't know what I'd have done. I really thought it was filmed nicely. I really thought it was filmed nicely and then the um the intro to it for us the viewers was really nicely edited yes to make it look like Jess saying that about the tenor with Kerry wasn't gonna happen and yeah but and I loved it that that's exactly what she did I loved that bit
Starting point is 00:35:43 it was brilliant and the impression of kerry as well absolutely hilarious i love that just really offensive it's that she must have been worrying about that from the moment she did it knowing that six months down the line kerry was going to see that she'd have to explain herself i suspect she'd forgotten all about that actually the worry really came in acutely in the studio phil mitchell that was funny yeah great yeah i i do agree with james like i'm so so surprised that anyone did anything other than than the air horn but but they did phil phil ate the apple threw it up in the air and said wang he wasn't he wasn't thinking clearly there because you need to do something predictable and that is utterly unpredictable i i totally got why he did
Starting point is 00:36:27 it yeah and it was almost like you needed to take a moment and reread it and go oh no hang on a minute yeah but but actually whether he was just cutting loose and thinking you know what this is this is where i i understood i might have gone phil's route there and been a bit of a smartass. Do you think? I might have done, yeah. But that would have cost you five points. I wish the listeners could see what Lisa did there. She just put her hands out and sort of went, and.
Starting point is 00:36:57 And that sums up the correct attitude to Taskmaster. Nothing really matters. And I'm sat here going, but you would have lost five points, Lisa. But it doesn't really matter does it and also you might think you've gone in there with an ocean going a number one bloody task and Greg's just gonna go I mean I thought I'd really hit gold with cactus shoes yeah I was just poo-pooed these These were the shoes that you used a rubber band to attach mini cactuses to the top. Oh, no, no. I'd gone to quite some there,
Starting point is 00:37:31 and that was proper glue guns with containers and cactus. Oh, I mean, really had gone... I think I always assumed that was a last-minute task. Yeah, I thought... I always assumed that was a last-minute task that you'd sort of put together fairly quickly. No. Invested loads of time in that.
Starting point is 00:37:49 I enjoyed it though. Yeah. You know, nonetheless, I'd worked out how to water them and everything. They were pulling my arse. But at the same time, I really thought I was into something. Yeah. That's great. One of them nights.
Starting point is 00:38:02 Anyway, stop talking about yourself, woman. No, that's what you're here for, please. It was five points for everyone apart from Jess, who got 10 points. Yeah, that 10-point bonus was very refreshing there because suddenly it threw the whole show apart, didn't it? Of like, oh, okay. It really did.
Starting point is 00:38:20 Now and again, those things happen where you just think, this is exciting again now. Oh, my God. Oh, what's happened? I love these foghorns. Ha, ha, ha, ha. The sound of a party. Task four, draw the biggest and best circle.
Starting point is 00:38:38 Biggest and best circle wins. Your circle must be completed in one single sweep. You have 10 minutes. Your time starts now. The interesting thing about this episode is there's no, like, big tasks. circle must be completed in one single sweep you have 10 minutes your time starts now the interesting thing about this episode is there's no like big tasks these are all they're very good tasks but they're all quite sort of subtle little tasks there's playing a story painting a picture guessing a thing and drawing a circle it's quite a low-key episode for episode two especially
Starting point is 00:39:03 don't you think do you think that's just because the approach to it maybe but then also i think this the setup the setup of the task is it doesn't really ask for anything too bombastic does it no you're absolutely right i hadn't thought of that but they're all they're all good they all work out well and everyone's approaches are very funny i mean especially in this in this circle one um people do some absolutely mad stuff and let's talk about phil first of all who tries to draw a circle because he has the right idea doesn't he basically using a Alex's a compass with a thing and uh with a pole and then and then doing a circle i think it would have been brilliant why why select a highlighter i would have searched that house for half a tin of emulsion yeah and i'd have been tempted to go out on the road such would have been my vein you know when you just think oh this is going to be
Starting point is 00:39:57 massive yeah actually that front bit of drive would have been perfect yeah a blimmin highlighter pen madness absolute madness you could of course my only other thought because they did something similar on on the show before actually um was using maybe one of those tracking things or an app like a running app and going out onto the field and then walking yeah walking in a big circle and then and then you've got the you've got the whole journey planned on the app um would have been quite good oh that would have been like tie yourself to a tree or something and just go and just go for a little hoolahoo alex with some string and as i say i'd have looked for um paint yeah paint is the best way to paint or chalk i mean uh um jess used the
Starting point is 00:40:43 chalk but then just the rope just let the rope go absolutely slack and ended up just sort of doing taking a big slice of cheese out the side of it that's i suspect there was something on her mind at that point you know when when suddenly something's happened and she's literally thinking of something else yeah and then realize what's i mean i could not i couldn't quite get that because actually she's really thorough yeah yeah she is and she's got the right idea as well and it just seemed that technique just failed everyone yeah and then i think she gave up once the rope went slack she seemed to give up and just go i'm just gonna make it finish i'm just gonna end that bit there and put it there do a potato yeah that's
Starting point is 00:41:25 the devastating thing about the rule of it being in one single sweep because you can't go back and perfect it you can't i would have i would have been terrible at this lisa i would have been so bad i think wasn't kerry's pleasing oh that was so pleasing so pleasing i mean the tease of her just not clocking oh i can go outside yeah ease of that go outside because that really and but the actual swoosh completion and then the lovely droney shot of oh it's almost perfection it was i mean it really was perfection and she was so happy with it she was so chuffed and it was just the sound of it as well it's properly satisfied just the done perfect now that really was just like that yeah it was yeah so bill was that was an interest for an intelligent man yeah that was quite an interesting because i was trying to see if there was um only because we're talking about it i would have just
Starting point is 00:42:21 sat and well did just sit and enjoy it back back when it was on but it was yeah that perplexed me why he picked that almost like i thought maybe it would be a luminous yeah i thought maybe it was going to be like oh it's not there is it and then they would cut to it at night and it's just this perfect circle just glowing in the dark but no he just picked a highlighter for no reason whatsoever chalk or paint definitely the way to go yeah rod's rod's idea was interesting but i i don't know if it should have been allowed to have been a big circle i can't remember it he drew on a map he drew a circle on a map of the world and then I think expected Greg to allow it as a big circle because it if you use the key it's like miles and miles wide it's like thousands of miles wide but
Starting point is 00:43:13 I mean I think the way it worked out in the end he got four points because Jesse's wasn't a circle Phil's disappeared and James was a complete mess we'll talk about James a minute but I think he did actually just do the biggest normal circle next to Kerry, really. But I get the idea behind it, but would you have allowed that as a big circle, Lisa? I don't know, because again, I figured that there'd been some heavy chat
Starting point is 00:43:39 that we might not have seen, because actually Greg arrived at the scale version of that, you know, that, that kind of speech by the time we saw the scoring. So I figured there might've been some arguing going on. I think I heavily suspect and I have insider knowledge on this, that throughout the series, there was a lot more arguing than made it onto the screen.
Starting point is 00:44:02 Yeah. I figured as as much you can kind of small it yeah and also sometimes you just cut to james who's not like nicely sort of wired you think what um what's going on with you he looks pumped up he looks ready to throw down and kerry's always like that anyway but there's a there's only so many times in an episode kerry can accuse rod of cheating so i think maybe they had to lose some of it there. It was an interesting idea from Rod, but I wouldn't have counted it personally as a big circle. I don't know what happened to James.
Starting point is 00:44:33 I think he must have misread it as most circles. Yeah, I think you're right. I think that it, or that's how it, yeah, misread or that's how he saw it yeah or which he does now and again he couldn't think of anything good to do that would get him a big circle and would be funny so just decided to absolutely railroad it and be funny by getting one point and being a actually i mean the big talk about a circle on the bike was quite funny because it was anything it was that it was like a toddler in the park on one of those you know when you just think oh well this isn't quite the
Starting point is 00:45:09 circle you had in your mind yeah exactly just going round and round in circles trying to do the hula hoop landing on a circle and then saying his eyes are circles um even if it was most circles i don't there was no evidence of these circles. So look, it was a dreadful attempt, but I've never forgotten it. I'll say that. I love that sort of like,
Starting point is 00:45:34 you know, the leg in the circle at the end. Yeah. Trying to claim that's a circle. I mean, he could have crashed that bike. I mean, that could have been quite nasty, actually. So that's saving himself in a sort of old showbiz style step.
Starting point is 00:45:50 And it's another circle. The delight. Very generous of you to describe it as a showbiz style. You know what I mean. I do, yeah. It was one point for James, deservedly, and I think he was very lucky to get one point. As was Phil.
Starting point is 00:46:07 I think Phil was lucky to get two points because there's no circle there. Jess didn't get a circle and got three points. Rod did his circle on the map of the world, four points, and Kerry's snow circle, an easy five points. The only one who understood the assignment, I think.
Starting point is 00:46:21 It was pretty amazing. I know what I'm going to do. You know what you're going to do? I'm going to cycle around in circles on the bike while spinning this around my arm. OK, well, you've got one go at this. Good luck. Yeah, well, good luck to you.
Starting point is 00:46:34 This is how you sweep a circle. You ready? Yes. Still doing it. And look where I landed. In a circle. In a circle. How many circles have been involved in this so far? There's those wheels, already circular.
Starting point is 00:47:03 This one's going in circles around me, that's a circle. I landed in a circle. It's those wheels already circular. This was going in circles around me, that's a circle. I landed in a circle. It's not most circles. Huh? It's biggest and best circle. Yeah, but you add them all up together. You should add them all up. I'll add them all up. And then that's the task. That was the real task. Okay. Thank you, James. I really enjoyed your circles. Thank you, James. I really enjoyed your circles. Thank you, Alex. Goodbye. Let's talk about the live task.
Starting point is 00:47:34 Make the highest tower of cans within your hoop. You have 100 seconds, during which you must also be within your hoop. If you step out of your hoop during the 100 seconds, you'll be disqualified. After the 100 seconds, you must step out of your hoop during the 100 seconds, you'll be disqualified. After the 100 seconds, you must step out of your hoop and do not touch your tower again. Highest self-supporting tower of cans within your hoop
Starting point is 00:47:50 10 seconds after the final whistle wins. That's the most I've ever had to say hoop in that short amount of time. Loved every one. Yeah. Anything like this, I would stress out about so much. Would you have gone for this, do you think? Well much yeah would you have gone for this do you
Starting point is 00:48:05 think uh well you don't have a choice do you so you find yourself in that mode shit in the pocket yeah shit in the pocket mode but actually you are doing a live task and you better believe get on with it yeah i initially i needed the clarification of like, right, I'm in the hoop with them. That was my first angst. It's like, oh, right, okay. So, I mean, which was quite clever. Yeah. Yeah, so you're always close to the tower, yeah.
Starting point is 00:48:38 Yeah, and then, I mean, would it be an advantage to be a big woman in there? Probably not. I'm not sure. I'm trying to envisage. Let me just think about that. I'm a big woman with some cans. Let me think about it.
Starting point is 00:48:57 And then I thought, because also on those sort of tasks, when the whistle's gone, you do think, hang on, and there is that look around of like, get the cans near you yes yeah out loud it's whether were you in the live tasks were you someone who forged your own path or were you looking around seeing what everyone else was doing and trying to get bits of information from them and techniques from other people a bit of both actually yeah um and and only down only down to whether you'd understood it clearly or not and and at that point having watched all your films knowing that there'll be at least two moments in the show where alex will say to someone read the instructions yeah it's all in the instructions so suddenly as as somebody said
Starting point is 00:49:44 it because you've not got it in your hand is that what they mean or is there a you know is there a back yeah yeah very rarely a back door in the live tasks i've found they sort of do they tend to make it completely completely uh sealed off so you can't mess around with it you just need to play it properly and i was always that i would never work out the clever way of doing it i'd always have to take a little bit would you have gone would you done like a three or would you have stuck to the single can never i would never have stuck to the single can and at least try and get a good base to to build on because a single can if it goes it's all gone right yeah if you've got
Starting point is 00:50:22 a base at least you've got some some sort of tower there single can single can people are crazy Lisa it was just madness wasn't it and actually Jess did lose hers because of James's collapse so yeah which was unfair but that's that's life isn't it yeah that's taskmaster life suck it up it was one point for James two points for Jessica three points for Phil four points for Rod and five points for Kerry meaning that Jess and Kerry joined first uh and it went to a tie break which was not a filmed tie break I don't know why that this there was not there was not a film tie break in the can ready to go is because we filmed loads of tie breaks i know that never got shown yeah um are you um do you think that maybe they thought that they'd have to maybe they had two tie breaks and they needed to save them in case for later yeah maybe but how many did you how many tie breaks did you film do you remember I think a minimum a minimum of three yeah on the champions
Starting point is 00:51:28 one did you have to look for ducks in the um science room yes yeah I did I did do that and then they used that task in that's the first task in series 13 yeah so that because I guess that's a good way of it of I mean did you rip that that room apart? No, I didn't rip it apart because there was a slightly confusing thing when we did it. I don't know if you remember that you couldn't go past a certain line. There was like a line in the lab
Starting point is 00:51:55 where you weren't allowed to approach Alex or you weren't allowed to step over a certain line, but then you did have to approach Alex because he had pants on with ducks and stuff so it's like it was slightly confusing I guess that's one of the things they ironed out by the time they got it to to series 13 otherwise if there'd be no if there'd be no rules and about where you could go in the room I would have absolutely torn it apart did you tear it apart do you remember what you did you did yeah great yeah, great. It was quite, you know, when it was quite unexpected and they're expecting me to be ladylike
Starting point is 00:52:26 because I went straight in and ripped all the flooring up. Great. And then did the same to the walls. Were there ducks under there? And bizarrely, there were two on there that they didn't even know were there. See, that's interesting because I swear they must have thought that they were,
Starting point is 00:52:43 I thought they were there for us because Judy Love found one. Yeah. In series 13. Yeah. Yeah. That's weird. Who knows?
Starting point is 00:52:52 There were a lot in the ceiling though, I seem to remember. It's haunted, though, isn't it? Apparently the Taskmaster house is haunted, apparently. Have you heard that? Is it? Yeah. Apparently it's haunted. Andy Devon should tell me.
Starting point is 00:53:02 Where did that come from? I don't know. Ghost, probably. No, but where did the story... What don't know ghost probably no but where did the story what was the origin i'm not sure what the origin is and andy devonshire told me that the taskmaster house is haunted and he said it in such a way that makes me think he genuinely believes it is oh i'd buy it off of him as well because he's no messing around there well i mean there is a lot of messing around but yeah no no he he's very serious about messing around, isn't he? Yeah.
Starting point is 00:53:26 Yeah. Yeah, serious messing around. Serious messing around. He'll be listening to this and he'll take that as a real compliment. Yeah, of course he will. Duke of Devonshire. And Andy, if you want to email me
Starting point is 00:53:37 and tell me why there wasn't a filmed tie break for this episode, please do. That would be interesting. Yeah. I was a bit surprised by that I did have a tie break where you had to who got your tech who replied to a text quickest I think it was between myself and possibly Russell actually yes and I was wondering I just texted one of my one of my husbands in France knowing that he'd be titting around in the garden so just like that quick text me I'll
Starting point is 00:54:05 explain later text me something like that although I did get a bit chatty yeah yeah I mean actually the tie breaks are are interesting aren't they they're sort of um yeah fun to do because you know they've got to be quick yeah really quick there's no point you don't need to think about them you just do them and yeah it's great I think we had one we had one there was one in our final episode actually between me and Rose which was we had to use one condiment or spread to uh stick down one of those toys that pops up quickly and the the one that you'd pick one one spread and then the person who keeps it down the longest wins. And I think I managed to keep mine down for an hour and a half with some peanut butter.
Starting point is 00:54:47 What a genius idea. What did Rose go for? I can't remember what she... She went for something smart, I think like Marmite or something, but didn't use enough of it. I think she was quite sparing with it, whereas I put basically half a jar of peanut butter
Starting point is 00:55:01 all over it and that seemed to work. But, you know, I'd won by that point anyway I loved Rose on yours she is brilliant shame she came second Kerry won the tie break task by guessing 7 and Jess just went all in and guessed
Starting point is 00:55:21 1666 for no reason and wouldn't be told she wouldn't back down. So Kerry took home the episode, her second win out of two episodes. So it puts her in the lead in the series, but closely followed by Rod and Jess and Phil and James. I imagine that Kerry thought it would be written like a word. Do you think? Yeah, all the way up his arm? I think that if you look at it, and you can see her mind working,
Starting point is 00:55:50 that when he says, I've got a number written here, she assumed it would be written in letters as opposed to... Ah, yeah, interesting. But then I guess, yeah, there's no sort of parameters for the numbers. So you do think, how big would he go? So, you know, it was as smart, I guess, as anyone else's. Yeah, absolutely. And an enjoyable episode.
Starting point is 00:56:14 I definitely think you got to know people more. I mean, that badinage around Phil's gents veg in the team task. So that was quite interesting interesting wasn't it because that got that out the way yeah or it didn't because it just is the gift that keeps giving yeah the gents veg uh rears its head every episode I believe um so it certainly didn't get it out the way uh it put it put it in the limelight even more have freeing for phil um we've got some emails uh for you lisa uh this uh there were loads about the beard i'll just say that we got we got too many to count
Starting point is 00:57:05 about the beard so that's why we chatted about that um this is interesting because I I mentioned where I thought you'd finish but here's Jillian Stockport wants to know if you did your task master experience again but you had to do the whole thing with Ed, Kerry, Lou and Richard where do you think you'd finish Lisa? Oh I don't know actually I don't know. Tricky one isn't it? Yeah that's't know tricky one isn't it yeah that's quite a good question isn't it because there's um the full 10 episodes it's tricky to work out how it how it would throw down i think i think you'd be the favorite i think you'd be the odds on favorite to take it home strong though that's strong competition because also you think about the
Starting point is 00:57:43 uh team tasks how they divide that up would it be would they do a girl and boy thing well then i've got no chance if they do a girl and boy thing me and richard would be the worst team in the history of taskmaster which is why they might put you together because it's funny yeah i think i can't answer that i can't answer that and not because i don't want to, but because that's, that'll be a spin. And later I'll go into that in private.
Starting point is 00:58:13 This is from Julian. Hello. I'm a huge fan from Melbourne, Australia, and I missed the chance to ask this of Lisa Talbot when she was on the podcast the first time. So I wanted to know if she went on the day trips that were the prize task and who the mystery guests were that she was thinking of for her dinner. Like Greg, I was beguiled by the anonymity of who they would be and never got an answer.
Starting point is 00:58:32 Thank you for the podcast. It's a delightful companion to my favorite show. Thanks, Julian. How lovely. Actually, I did have guests planned. I think there were a couple of things. I think I got accused of, I mean, j'accuse like it's a big deal. But I did have guests planned. So there was a core group. And then it would depend who won it as to who I'd ask to come. Yes. But I'm not going to reveal them because I think that would be slightly rude but but they
Starting point is 00:59:07 were good and they and they were musical and actory and comedy lovely so it would just be a good fun lunch where you'd really feel like you'd had a great day I really like how much mystery there is even in this episode of the podcast we We don't find out what your rejected prize task was, and we still don't find out who the dinner party guests were. And I like that. Yeah, I think that's maybe the, yeah, maybe that'll make you keep on having me on. Yes, exactly.
Starting point is 00:59:34 You just keep leaving things in the air. Keep not revealing things. Yeah. You, of course, are welcome back anytime, Lisa. We always ask our guests on the Taskmaster podcast to rate their experience on the Taskmaster podcast between one and five points in our guests on the Taskmaster podcast to rate their experience on the Taskmaster podcast between one and five points in the style of the Taskmaster have you enjoyed yourself again and how many points would you rate it please
Starting point is 00:59:53 well I'm going to give you four points okay I'll take it and then there's that little sly point for going and answering the door and just not even thinking that that might be just leave me roasting for a minute. Just look, first things first, I've come back from Montreal. Yes, I've come back from Montreal. So yeah, I'll give it a five, Ed. It's always a bit of a bluff. Very, very happy with that.
Starting point is 01:00:16 And I'll take my four and I did have to go and get a parcel from the door and I apologise for that. What was in it? Some picture frames. It's my wife's order, those. I've got absolutely no idea what's going to go on the wall in those but there's some picture frames married man married man
