We talk all things from designing shoes, navigating the industry as a woman, why Sambas are suddenly a thing, what does your crocs say about you...

Hi guys and welcome back to T-Hat 4. I'm Christy. I'm Ellie. And today we've got a special guest introducing Beverly. So following the theme of Black History Month, we are celebrating our sisters and today we have our good sis Bev. So basically Beverly is said to be the first black female footwear designer in London oh wow and we have the privilege of having her right here she's my friend as well so I I grew up with her like we've got nursery since I was four years old yeah oh okay so it's all the gossip all the gossip all the juice but we're not here for the juice today we're here for the greatness that is tobe footwear so i guess we'll start like what is tobe footwear and what you do basically tobe footwear is a luxury sneaker brand or trainer brand sorry we're in the uk

um because i know americans say sneaker trainer yeah yeah so it's just because i think that is the correct term but yeah a luxury trainer sneaker brand um so we've been going since 2018 um yeah it's been a crazy crazy journey but yeah it's been it's been fun like christy said i think i'm the only black uh it says you are guap says it forbes said it you are that's yeah which is a big achievement um but yeah it's been going really well so far we've got like 10 different silhouettes uh we just had a pop-up in box park about two months ago which was really fun we do a pop-up every year so this is our fourth one uh we've done three in box park and one in stoke newington which is like where we're from so that was really cool to do that.

So yeah, that's basically us. Nice, love it. How did you start? How do you wake up one day and think, I'm going to make a sneaker company actually do it? Yeah, this is so funny because I actually, it was very like random. It was more like a joke.

Let me just try it out and see how it goes. But I was working in a retail in a training department in selfridges and i was just like i can't keep going into work i'm so bored like this is just like what can i do that's like not a nine to five and i remember i went home one day and i was sat in the dark in the dark yeah i was sat in the dark and i was just like do you know what what can i do come on use your brain like there's something you must be good at yeah and i was just like people know me for wearing trainers like i'm just like a massive trainer collector

sneaker head and i was like okay can i just ask a question so do you have like like the sneaker boxes stacked up in your room that scares me no i don't i did i've tried to get rid of my boxes but they're like a trainer heads like prized possession like you never throw yeah you don't throw away your boxes so yeah but i've just it's a bit like a hoarder so i'm just like i just need to get rid of them so yeah i don't do that anymore yeah a lot of people do um but yeah i was sat in the dark and i was just like okay what can you do and i was like people know you for trainers just make your own and it sounded really crazy at the time but i was like hey go on google sorry look at different manufacturers and then just took it from there and

it was yeah so you just create a trainer and then what do you send it off to the manufacturer and they just make the trainer yeah so me and my manufacturer we've got like a relationship where sometimes she designs products and i design products and we like go back and forth and she'll be like oh i drew this up the other day this looks really cool what do you think and i'll be like i don't like the sole can you change this can you change the laces and it's just like a back and forth relationship and i actually met her at selfridges so oh yeah we used to have a lot of like people that will come in and buy like maybe 100 pairs of shoes and they ripped them apart so basically she was a buyer um yeah and they ripped the shoes apart and yeah all of that kind of stuff and i was like oh this looks really cool like what do you do

um took her details down i don't know when i'm ever going to need this but yeah and then i remember i remember taking your number down like let's like stay in contact so yeah i definitely was not allowed to do that but you did it i did it and here we are here we are so yeah that's mad enough that yeah everything happens for a reason exactly definitely and i feel like especially with like you said you're a sneaker head i say sneaker i can't say trainer it's so confusing sneakers like nicer to say but yeah i do want to keep with the trainers yeah it's like my trainers my trainers trainer i'm a trainer it makes sense though because you train in your trainers.

No, not every trainer that you train in. So would you say trainer's more for like a trainer? Trainer's more like for performance shoes. Yeah. Like a running shoe. Right.

You'd call a trainer, really, you'd call a trainer. But people don't, a running shoe's not stylish. No, it's not like a lifestyle, like a lifestyle trainer. So these, what we're wearing would be sneakers.

Yeah, exactly. Because this is a lifestyle shoe. And then when i go running i'm in my trainers yeah exactly exactly don't you do marathons so trainers sneakers okay so um i actually kind of find it fascinating that you actually you met the person at work yeah you weren't meant to do that but you take the risk as you should um but i was gonna ask you do you find it very like because it's a very male dominated area how was it quite intimidating going into like the trainer world sneaker world sorry we'll say sneakers but um yeah talk us through that yeah no it's definitely like

everyone's will majority of the people in the industry is our males um and a lot of people think that the brand is actually run by a male um like every time i get emails it's like addressed to a guy or like i remember like sometimes i search on like twitter to see like what people are talking about about the brand and like oh yeah like he's doing such an amazing job like this person that and just literally referring to me as a male so it just is a male dominated industry so you kind of go into it that mindset but again i feel like women are taking over the world so as the years go on there are more women that are joining in the industry which is really nice to see so do you think you have like better qualities within the company because you are a woman it gives you like a bit of an edge yeah definitely again people are fascinated oh my god

it's a woman behind it so i kind of just run with it i'm like yes women empowerment i am running this shit on my own yeah so yeah definitely for sure would you say most of your buyers are male as well yeah i can't imagine that i think like 80 percent really yeah are males so yeah i wasn't expecting that yeah but i feel like as the as we grow there are a lot of women that buy the products especially because now i'm doing a lot of like pink and neutral colorways. So I feel like the girly girls are like really interested in that kind of colorway and stuff. But yeah, I think just in general, I think a lot of men just buy into trainers anyway.

So just a natural thing. So yeah. Random question guys. Yeah. When you guys do shop, like go shopping for like trainers and sneakers, where do you guys buy it in the male section or the women's section?

Kids. Yeah. Kids. I've got small feet, so I wear size four to five. So I always get like the junior size. Because they're cheaper. And they look like the same exact shoes.

I've got massive feet. So I'd start in the women's, but then the selections never as good. That's exactly what i was gonna say yeah yeah and i also try to take that into consideration with my brand because a lot of women are just like we don't just want pink shoes we don't just want like the cool stuff that you're giving yeah so yeah i definitely agree i'm always looking at the men's section and it starts from like a size seven or an eight and it's like okay i can't fit into these so yeah what do you do okay they're more expensive though yeah a lot more expensive yeah it's the pain

okay so talking about comfort what's one pair of trainer slash sneaker you wear every day oh that's a good question okay i'm not gonna would wear every day? Oh, that's a good question. I'm not going to say Tobes because I feel like that's just... Probably my Sambas. I've been wearing these so much. Sambas. Sorry. Sambas.

a neutral kind of shoe so I'll probably say these why are these such a thing at the moment like all the TikTok girlies yeah areies yeah it's a real trend um i don't know i think they just they've just come come back in fashion to be fair so so they were back before that they were yeah i actually i used to work for adidas and these were not cool when i went there i went there maybe like five years ago and yeah they were like i think internally like we'd wear them but it wasn't like trendy but i think there must have been like one influencer that posted in them and then yeah that

was it so really yeah but they come in so many different colors like people are wearing red green yellow but yeah it's like you know it is it's weird because it's like them those new balances at point when they first came out i was like they are so ugly yeah so ugly and then randomly everyone started wearing them and i feel like i love the designs now but before i was just like hell no yeah you guys were like they weren't cool were they no now they're cool yeah habituated to them habituated wow yeah i don't know what that means okay so yeah i think there was there must have been one influencer that put them on and then it just went crazy so we should buy what they call them and they're so hard to get now

samba samba i need a samba i guess you can do the nice little salsa the samba with it as well comfort so that's the shoe that you wear every single day yeah at the moment yeah at the moment i'd say Birkenstocks it's not a sneaker though I love a good what about a croc I love a good croc I haven't got any crocs

but I would actually I love a croc they're the best thing ever which ones though because she's like nah which one

just for comfort is there different styles yeah because there's like the heeled crocs the platform classic just like the classic ones yeah I'm not gonna lie

I'm a crocker I just need to throw on. Like when you just need to just throw something on. And the colourways are really nice now as well. And you can customise them. Put some gibbets on. You know. Get creative.

Everybody in the studio is like, no. Bun the crocks. I don't have any, but I would get some. I think, yeah. Buy some crocks.

You wear it every day though. I got slides. I got Yeezy slides. Yeah. Oh, you want Yeezy slides? Yeah oh you want yeah in the street in the street yeah someone came up to me with like a cardboard saying if you make me laugh i'll give you no way my size love the color so i stuck my finger up his nose no i would not have thought to do that that's the last thing that i would have done because i just thought everyone would be telling like really

and that's it amazing i know i don't regret it no regrets love my slides now people say they notice sneakers first right that's the first thing they notice that people's um you know if you bump into somebody on the road the first thing you notice that people's, you know, if you bump into somebody on the road, the first thing you notice is their shoes. So we're gonna play a game called what do your shoes say about you? And also where I actually want to get into it very, very deeply is because your mantra, yeah, if you remember it is, have to say say it right because tobe is a very good mantra which says a good pair of shoes says a lot about a person good shoes mean good manners so i want to firstly start before we go and see what the other shoes options that we have what do my shoes say about me well you told me you got them for free

so good one yeah yeah i think um they actually look i've never seen those people right yeah they look really good they look a bit like the new balances yeah your shoes say that you're you've been you've thought about your outfit you've put together the outfit today your nice khaki cord and you thought i put on a pair of fresh whites so i think put together put together like that yeah i don't really put together but i get yeah for sure a lot of people have these yeah no i think these are really cool i love converse i love converse what do you say about you i think you're going for a summer vibe today you know it's quite warm outside we've got a random bit of heat wave um so yeah i think

converse has always looked really nice with like shorts and skirts yeah so yeah i get your vibe i get the vibe is going i'm not the white ones well you've got the white ones i think is it all white yeah like the creamy ones yeah yeah no they're really cool yeah i'm cool yeah what do your shoes say about you rev i wear these every day easily influenced clearly she's on her zoo yeah easily influenced what did my shoes say

about me today I think lazy because these were the closest shoes that I could find and I had to go through all the boxes

they're very clean yeah these are not clean guys they look pristine yeah clean to me you said how do I clean my shoes right

so that was a question that you asked sometimes I just put my shoes in the washing machine yeah i do that no no no in a in a pillowcase in a pillowcase no tie up no um detergent in there i put air force ones depends on the shoes in the same way in the bag took it out the salt came out the shoe became yellow like then what temperature did you wash it at um the coldest one oh is he supposed to be the coldest one yeah what do you wash it i've got no idea i just shove it in to be fair it depends on the shoes some shoes are like really like fragile and they will air forces will fall apart but for example my i have new balances the 990s i think

yeah i've put them in the wash like 10 times and they just yeah i use toothpaste really yeah to get to get rid of that if white shoes toothpaste wow interesting works a dime canvas ones what's the canvas like converse yeah yeah the sole bit of it yeah the little this bit the round oh so but how would i wash like white canvas yeah i'm just getting you could get like a shoe clean like crepe protect do really good shoe cleaning um so they've got like the protecting spray they've also got wipes as well which are really good yeah you can use that um also do you know what's so good fairy liquid fairy liquid as in the washing up liquid interesting like it's so good to clean anything i'm scared it's gonna stain because it's green it will come out yeah wash it out it will come out and clean too yeah so you heard it here first you know from the

one and only toe footwear ceo founder washing up liquid yeah a lot of improvising goes on at my house so yeah interesting when um you said you were collecting trainers what how were you collecting them like so i was just i so working in selfages i got a really good discount um so i was constantly buying shoes and you always had to buy new shoes for the season so you get like a voucher and then like you need to have this yeah the best shoes that's in season so i was just constantly buying stuff would you resell them no i wasn't allowed so i didn't um so i was not really a reseller to be fair i was buying to like keep yeah and like entering the raffles um for all the exclusive jobs and

stuff like that just to be like a collector isn't it yeah using self-registered one of my exes used to like wake up at like ridiculous time yeah it's a serious job yeah literally but you just sell them for like yeah resellers make a lot of money really is this why um they do converse not converse it's air forces the prices have like shut up forces used to be 50 pounds they're not like 200 rounds yeah yeah and you can't even go into jd to buy a white pair like you could yeah no you can't do that they're not on the shelves anymore you can't do that no i didn't know that no yeah so i haven't bought a pair since a good couple of years because it's that hard yeah it's either you buy the ones that they have your shoes to buy yeah literally i think it's because

I love wearing something that not everyone has as well. I feel like that makes someone interested when they wear something. Oh, where are they from? you feel like really special yeah insightful so i've never seen these right yeah it starts conversation i like that is it only me but have you guys noticed that a lot of these shoes are morphing into like strange forms and they're they're they're getting bigger but i don't think big is always better is it just me what was this it's like all these shoes are getting in the room they're just getting weirder and weirder like they're just yeah like the shoes are getting bigger than me like they added an extra height on me and oh i see what you mean i can't like a big shoe though do you yeah i know and i'm quite tall so i don't really understand why yeah i don't know this is

Like, you know, when certain things maybe you just want to learn.

I've tried. I've done lessons. I love water sports. Like, on holiday, I want to be the person that's jumping off the boat without a life jacket. But I just can't do it. I don't know what it is. It's just not. Are you panicking?

I just can't swim calm i just can't swim i just can't swim i don't know how you can do you literally go up like down i would drown i don't understand like in the sea you just float no you don't people that are swimmers are always just like yeah like it's fine just get in the water you'll be fine you can swim that's right but i can literally no all you have to do is that no i can't i can't float i can't you know nothing and we had like lessons in school like we used to

go every like wednesday we'd go swimming but i was left in the small pool basically you'd have to swim like 10 meters you'd have to swim 10 meters to go to the big pool which is like the deeper pool yeah i was like one of two that didn't make it to the big pool maybe class of 30 yeah class of 30 honestly class of 30 every every at the beginning of every lesson okay you gotta swim 10 meters if you swim 10 meters you can make it to the big pool maybe you got small lungs so it's like less food yeah see i don't know i hear it because i feel like i've got water anxiety like i i think i know how to swim i i've swam i floated i know all of that but when i get into the situation where it's like okay cool there's a swimming pool yeah you can't do it no what do you mean like i've got water anxiety if i can't touch the if for instance if i'm in a pool i can

touch the ground and push myself back up yeah that's fine what anxiety is a thing but an open sea i can't do it i would love that yeah to be in the sea and just the most me guys i feel like you're making us around we're doing a swim essence yeah the most i've done is if you drink before you go oh that's a terrible idea i've watched these guys and they drowned after drinking and swimming so i'm not gonna do that but i think the most i've done is i was tied on a in croatia um i was tied on a donut yeah and they tied it to the end of the the yacht and i sat there and i was like yeah this is me and i was ready to go i just pulled it but yeah never again what's a donut the donut thing a donut i thought it's a donut i know she's talking about curing things again, isn't it? But yeah, so that's the things that are off-brand.
