Starting point is 00:00:00 Hey everyone, welcome back to the T at 4 podcast. My name is Billy. I'm Christy. And I'm Lauren. Talking all things that should have stayed in the group chat. Our ics, pics and hot takes straight from the girls and gays. Here we go. So let's get into it. Come on then, Ratscallions. Right, so today we're going to be talking all things body image, but first of all, I want to know what's happened this week. What's the gossip? What's 411? Oh my gosh, so on instagram i saw vanessa williams her name vanessa williams right i think so there is a vanessa williams that's it yeah so she posted a picture of her betty and mark
Starting point is 00:00:38 so then i was just like oh my god do you guys remember Ugly Betty do I do I want to remember I'm supposed to be do I want to back no I really want to I want an extra episode like I need it again
Starting point is 00:00:53 we literally just finished watching it we did we did they don't make they don't make and speaking on our topic today
Starting point is 00:01:01 body image Ugly Betty had that theme as well right yeah it's problematic though. Cause it's just like saying that someone that has braces, one, she wasn't even big
Starting point is 00:01:09 and they always made references to her body. But I think isn't that part of like the issue that they were trying, that's part of the issue they were trying to show. So like she wasn't even like a big girl, but everyone saw her as this big girl. Do you know what I mean? Like that's kind of like the issue
Starting point is 00:01:23 that they were trying to like because every time people would watch it people would be like she's not even that ugly you know she's not that fat we've come from the generation
Starting point is 00:01:35 that was like quite magazine heavy now we've moved into like the pressures of social media affecting our visual body image I like specifically
Starting point is 00:01:43 remember being sat in hairdressers when i was younger and reading like one of those like mum's magazines like heat or okay or something and like they just have a whole section of like body shaming celebrities that had been on the beach and then they'd obviously paparazzi'd them oh my god they're just like obviously not sucking in they're just walking or something like whatever caught in a very natural place so no wonder there's a pressure to be so like poised and face tuned and editing yeah all yours those silly silly we want everything in our control yeah anything that's natural is just out i think it's got to a point where it's like you
Starting point is 00:02:16 you naturally do it now so for instance when you're taking a picture let me suck in yeah let me just let me just slinch the waist like let me just hold it and that but that's like becomes i think part of an issue is that like everyone's after the perfect photo yeah like you kind of you lose time and you lose energy trying to recreate or create a photo that really isn't capturing the moment that you're in no it's just like it's a forced kind of yeah our best versions of ourselves constantly of ourselves yeah it's awful because i see like um especially in lockdown we had those those like couple months off not working we're out there's a deadly virus going around but still the focus was on like how to get abs in two weeks how to like improve yourself ways to glow up in a short amount of time like all of that is going on but everyone's just thinking about how am i going to look better when i come out of this yeah i'll be
Starting point is 00:03:08 like the best version of myself yeah which is like it's not it's not a bad thing but it was also quite toxic obsessive obsessive i drew a lockdown actually i didn't quite enjoy it so during lockdown i me and my friend he's a personal trainer i was like i want to be something like you know active like active physical and he was okay cool let's do something i was okay cool why don't we work out every day at 6 p.m and i would do that on instagram live no you didn't really on instagram live for the month of i think from april till about i don't know when we ended it but um we did 5 000 squats so every day we did like 50 then we put it up put it up put it up each time it was quite obsessive so every day i was like comparing pictures day one i was like this day two was like that and
Starting point is 00:03:47 it's just like so that so were you doing it for the more appearance of your body or was it mental health at first i was doing it for mental health yeah but then after we came out of lockdown i continued i was like okay cool you're getting a bit too crazy so it's weird it starts as fun but then after a while you've got to know how to like switch yourself off and kind of like get back into reality and not bully yourself i feel like like if i don't work out for a week or like i'm eating something bad i actually start to kind of be like what are you doing what are you doing with your life and i bully myself and then at the end of it i'm just like i just had a donut and i feel absolutely disgusting it's like the catastrophic mentality that we've got ourselves into and it's because of all mentality that we've got ourselves into.
Starting point is 00:04:25 And it's because of all the things that have obviously fed into our brain. They're like the idea of good and bad foods, like the exercises you should be doing, like doing a hardcore ab workout versus, I know it's an ick, but mini trampolines. I absolutely love that as a form of exercise. But like, yeah, we've just got to, and it worries me for like the younger generation
Starting point is 00:04:45 because i remember being like you know in like in school yeah and you'd have this idea like oh i want to like improve my appearance but i'm not old enough to like get a gym membership yeah i'll be there in my room like doing sit-ups so my mum would come up to give me tea i'm like and that's just so embarrassing i'm literally not even working out such a like and it's just gonna get younger and younger but then these workouts are more accessible to be doing at home exactly i'm in love with my few parts the people's there that got to there they've got to stay in it yeah i've like started like that's now not an ick because obviously it's attractive if i'm like
Starting point is 00:05:19 on a dating app and someone's got a six-pack i just don't even bother swiping right because they like seeing someone with a six-pack makes me so self-conscious i just don't even bother swiping right because they like seeing someone with a six pack makes me so self-conscious yeah i wouldn't even want to like entertain the idea of that because i would be constantly thinking about like what i look like in comparison do you know what actually is quite funny not really funny but quite like oh my god quite shocking is you know back in the day when we had prom i'm pretty sure my prom pictures are absolutely terrible like i thought you were gonna say like edited no no my prom pictures are so so so bad and i look at like let's say my sisters and younger generation they look absolutely gorgeous
Starting point is 00:05:58 like makeup done at a makeup counter birthday makeup nails eyebrows conceit contour and then for me it's like in a way it's like okay good that they you know they're evolving they're you know growing up but at the same time i do feel like they're growing up quicker yeah i think they are they're rushing everything's now been like i think there's this conversation a couple of like months ago and people were like yeah 13 year olds don't look like 13 years old anymore and there's like i mean no i'm all for people doing you know that's what you like doing you're interested in makeup um but there's it's like why you do you want to you know perfect this image and yeah it's really like no one's grown into their beauty they're just forcing it on but we're all striving for this idea of perfection but imagine if our idea our idea of perfection like the kardashians
Starting point is 00:06:44 what's if that's face tuned what perfection like the kardashians what's if that's face tuned what if that's not like ai what if that's not even a real face that we're striving for one in three girls has had something down lips or it's so accessible people fly to turkey to get their teeth done yeah yeah and then get their hair done exactly yeah don't hate them it'll be me in a couple of years don't say that just gotta be very very confident in yourself do you know what I mean just keep on reassuring yourself because I think
Starting point is 00:07:06 with me I would never be in front of the camera yeah a couple of months back not months back it was a couple of like a year ago because somebody
Starting point is 00:07:14 once told me yeah you if you're watching this you once told me that I should not be in front of the camera I should get my my gaps
Starting point is 00:07:22 in my teeth closed but I am in front of the camera and I am talking and I love my teeth and i'm not gonna get them done period okay thank you good welcome thank you very much yeah yeah them for telling you what to change honestly i feel like a lot of people when they let's say somebody oh my god you look like that or oh my god you don't have this done it really plays somebody's mind imagine now i went and got my teeth done or that one person went and got got a hair transplant and where is he now irrelevant oh thank you period is this same person yeah no no
Starting point is 00:07:54 so we are starting it for audience just questions around like body image cool so the first one we asked would you consider cosmetic surgery we had 37 that said yes and 63 that said no which is good yeah yeah also nothing wrong with this does the question change if if it was if it was worded if you had the money to do cosmetic surgery would you do it true think about that i just like just deep it seems something more extreme when we were in bbl accessible it's so much more accessible now um we also asked how often do you use filters slash edit your photos and it was half and half 50 50 i i feel like people don't edit their photos but they use filters a lot i see i don't go near filters for me or a little bit of a nick. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:08:46 Really? If I see like an instant, like if I see like the way something's colour graded, I know it's a filter, like Valencia. Oh, Valencia. Absolutely not. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:08:55 Back up that truck. Yeah. I just don't want to look back at my photos when I'm an old person and see like a dog nose on my head. Do you know what I mean? Yeah. It is what?
Starting point is 00:09:06 Those Snapchat filters like a butterfly crown like no why am I looking at my 21st birthday and I'm just like oh she sat with a butterfly crown I hate it when you see like documentaries or like things and they use people's like home footage and all they've got are these snapchat filters oh my days yeah
Starting point is 00:09:20 I've got a missing photo and it's just a dog thing oh hell no what photo would you like to use if you go missing oh my god god forbid because that's not happening I always think that some photos do not use this if I've gone missing or if I'm in the news or like that
Starting point is 00:09:37 what's the issue if our pictures are so edited that our missing photos are not used do you know what I've started to think about recently and I keep seeing people talk about it it it's your ghost outfit what's the ghost outfit i hate talking about dying what like basically the ghost outfit yeah like so it's the outfit you die in would you be happy being a ghost the rest of your life in the outfit that you die in well i better start wearing a good outfit from now on that's what i mean that's i'd be happy with this being my ghost outfit?
Starting point is 00:10:06 No, I need to change my outfit. I thought when you go to heaven though, you'll just be dressed in like a white robe. Yeah, like a white gown. You don't go to heaven and then become a ghost, do you?
Starting point is 00:10:13 You're a ghost because you're not going to heaven. No, when I'm rising out of my body, they just instantly put a white gown on. Yeah. Yeah. Dress me. I need to double check
Starting point is 00:10:22 if that's actually how it works. Oh my God. But like, you know like in films like on TV shows and someone's a ghost it's the outfit
Starting point is 00:10:28 that will make you die yeah the dying yeah oh my well as long as it's a comfy jumper oh I've got a really uncomfortable bra on yeah I have to keep that on
Starting point is 00:10:36 in the after work I love that you'll be wearing a bra yeah I'm not wearing a bra in heaven get it free up their nipples free the nips in heaven
Starting point is 00:10:49 oh yeah free them actually that sounds like a night at the JY bar yeah it does yeah
Starting point is 00:10:55 free the nips oh I love that yeah it's so sad it makes me think as well when we get to like 90 and we look back at our life
Starting point is 00:11:03 how sad that we're going to go every time I was on a beach I just couldn't stop thinking about the fact like i hated my body yeah we're gonna obsess over that and it's not gonna mean anything like my boobs gonna be touching my knees and then i'm gonna wish that i had these little half saggy ones so i also asked have you ever searched for ways to improve your appearance 79 said yes and 21 said no i've definitely done it i don't i don't believe the 21 oh really he lies yeah i need truth
Starting point is 00:11:33 i want to see your search history because like that includes like how to make my hair look nicer how it's true yeah what hair color would suit me how to lose weight in two weeks yeah my search history is that so it's constantly I wipe my teeth without brushing my teeth no it's true yeah eat white chocolate really no it's not
Starting point is 00:11:55 official but I did do that once Coca-Cola they clean toilets with it so I thought I'd clean my teeth with it we did go through this the other night yeah no one time when I was younger in school holidays I didn't brush my teeth for like three days and then me and mum were making cakes
Starting point is 00:12:08 and there was like white chocolate in it and I looked in the mirror and my teeth were gleaming white. Good God. So that's actually a hack. Full-on hack. Strawberries barely
Starting point is 00:12:17 wipe your teeth. Do they? Strawberries, but you don't eat fruit. No, I hate strawberries. You hate strawberries? Tryphobia. Little dots, hairs.
Starting point is 00:12:24 Okay, I don't mind that. I even know I've got i've got that strawberries and chocolate and she was like i just have a chocolate yeah i find that i was trying to think like what's the earliest thing that i would have searched when i was younger i had to get abs in 24 hours no i don't think mine would be abs probably when i was younger i i honestly do not remember a point in my life where i wasn't self-conscious of being fat or big like and it's not i'm not like blaming my parents but i do remember like conversation my mom's gonna kill me for saying this but i was like i remember saying mom can i have jam sandwiches in my packed lunchbox and she would be like um no you can't have jam sandwiches you got ham and i was like oh but will my friend will host jam sandwiches. Will's not chubby.
Starting point is 00:13:06 Okay. It's like primary school. Our parents are trying to help us. That's the thing. But it's just in the way in which that is presented to us. Sometimes. Especially like older, like grandparents could always just like,
Starting point is 00:13:18 oh, you come away. Nannies. You might not wet your fatty. You're fluffy. You're fluffy. Oh my God. Fluffy. You're like fluffy not wear Your fatty Your fluffy Your fluffy Oh my god fluffy They're like fluffy What I look fluffy
Starting point is 00:13:29 Cuddly Cuddly is the first No you look nice and cuddly Like a toadie bear Oh no I remember getting to my Nance house She's like
Starting point is 00:13:36 I've seen a few Of those adverts And I'm like what And she's like proactive You heard that And I'm like I've literally got Teenage acne
Starting point is 00:13:42 Something called puberty Oh no I had one uncle Every time he used to come to the house, he'd squeeze our cheeks. And then obviously in my language, saying my bundi means basically like chubby. Oh, you're looking very, but look at all these cheeks I can eat.
Starting point is 00:13:54 I'm thinking, nah, nah, uncle. I'm fighting today, I'm gonna fight, I'm gonna fight. Yeah. Honestly. Yeah, I think my uncle said a couple of things when I was like chbeater or like therapy session who's called me fat yeah
Starting point is 00:14:08 yeah rolls off set I think the first thing I've searched up when I was younger was actually how to get rid of your eyebrows
Starting point is 00:14:16 why because I had oh my eyebrows were bushy bruv oh yeah I shaved mine off with a razor yeah and I used
Starting point is 00:14:22 like sparkly gold and blue to make a brow doesn't work but I just had like ends of my eyebrows shaved off oh my gosh I took mine off with a razor. Yeah, and I used like sparkly gold and blue to make a brow. Doesn't work. But I just had like ends of my eyebrows shaved off. My eyebrow looks like I've got a slit in it, but it's just where someone kicked me in the face.
Starting point is 00:14:33 It looks cool though. Styling. Stylish. I am a gangster. But obviously now, bushy eyebrows and thick eyebrows are in. So it's just like fads quick fads do you know what I mean who has been
Starting point is 00:14:48 mugged off this week we spoke about body types sizes this is a different aspect of it but this week I've been mugged off
Starting point is 00:14:55 by a particular person who Taylor Swift I don't know why for some reason I've been seeing so many memes this week
Starting point is 00:15:03 of her standing with like it's not actually her issue at all so, I've been seeing so many memes this week of her standing with like... It's not actually her issue at all. So I've just been seeing loads of memes this week of Taylor Swift stood with smaller celebrities. I saw her stood next to Bruno Mars. He looks about three foot tall. He's very small.
Starting point is 00:15:16 He's small. With another actress, I don't know. And I was thinking, cool, all these people that are just laughing at her, being like, oh, she's such a tall, big girl, blah, blah, blah. I look up at her height. I'm taller than her. I'm a walking meme.
Starting point is 00:15:31 Really? How tall is she? I was so embarrassed. They're like, oh, look at the way this girl dances. And I'm thinking, oh, my God, that's what they probably think about me. How tall is she? Yeah, how tall is she? I think she's 5'9".
Starting point is 00:15:41 Yeah, you're right. It's 5'9". Oh, I'm not 5'9". So, like, obviously, I've seen all these things, and it's really nine five nine i'm not five nine so like obviously i've seen all these things and it's really feeding into this idea that i've got in my head and i've literally talked to my therapist about this week yeah i've grown up always thinking that like i'm not very good with physical affection because i picture myself like you know in like marvel film or something when the big giant like comes over the skyscraper and like picks up a
Starting point is 00:16:01 small person in that and then it's just like hello lucy or something like that i really want to ask what marvel films have you been watching i think i actually meant the bfg oh my god because in her new song where she's like um everyone's a sexy baby and i'm the monster on the hill she's really encouraging this idea that tall girls are really awkward and like i just want to be a sexy baby but i'm a monster up the hill now she said that i'm literally a bigger monster than her i'm her dad i am your father i'm your father taylor your daddy monster you actually do look like her as well you could be don't talk to me like that i love taylor swift i don't know her music what's a famous taylor swift song you don't know any of her songs? What? Hey, hey, you, you.
Starting point is 00:16:45 That's Pink. No, that's not. That's Avril Lavigne. Hey, hey, you, you. She's 10, 2013. Oh, my God. She's like number one at the moment. Yeah, but what does she sing?
Starting point is 00:16:57 It's me. Hi. I'm the problem, it's me. Oh, okay. Okay, guys, give me an obvious song. I knew you were trouble when you walked in I love her shame on you sat in sight
Starting point is 00:17:07 sat in sight sat in sight Romeo save me I just want to be in that no no that's a completely wrong lyrics
Starting point is 00:17:13 Romeo moving on swiftly swiftly swiftly moving on swiftly Taylor so basically you're concerned
Starting point is 00:17:21 that you are Taylor's father no I'm I'm concerned that she's producing this narrative that I'm a big, ugly, tall monster up the hill. I'll never get a chance of being a sexy baby. You will be a sexy baby. And if I stand next to Bruno Mars, I will get bullied for it.
Starting point is 00:17:38 I think your issue is maybe that you think you're going to come into contact with Taylor Swift. I thought you were going to say Bruno Mars. I mean, yeah, him as well. No no i'm not worried about meeting taylor swift i'm worried about her perpetuating this this idea that tall people girls are scary i get the complete opposite i mean i wish i was taller yeah i think also like with this song like i think a lot more taller people being or tall girls maybe obviously not you being like oh i'm not the only one who feels like this do you know what i mean like when people sing about their own i do relate to it but i just i just like the next time a boy wants to go call me baby and then he's like oh i want stuff do you know i just don't want that to happen no you're fine validate my feelings
Starting point is 00:18:19 no no no we get you but i think you're fine trust. You're fine. I'm no longer mugged off then. No. My friends say not so. Guys, so moving on swiftly, we're going to play our favourite game, Don't Spill the Tea. Don't spill the tea. Okay, harmonies. Our producer Bob's going to drop some serious tea
Starting point is 00:18:42 and hopefully we're not going to spill it. I was taking a lovely nap the other day and I was rudely awakened by my housemate telling her boyfriend in a baby voice that she was going to give her boyfriend sucky sucky. So I pretended to be asleep for another half an hour. Me sucky sucky now, mommy. Oh, you like that one? Me sucky sucky now, mommy. Do you know the difference between wallpaper and toilet paper?
Starting point is 00:19:15 Gross. I don't get it. I don't get it. I recently heard that the vagina is a muscle Since gyms are closed How about you come see me to work out Save the best till last before we do go
Starting point is 00:19:52 I want to get what piece of advice would you give to your young self might be go to the gym sooner get off your arse you fat lazy chick people just don't like to work these days get off your arse you fat lazy people just don't like to work these days get off your ass and fucking work bitch is that what you're saying to yourself no i know um don't worry what other people are thinking um do what you feel comfortable and how what you like
Starting point is 00:20:18 fashions change styles change so just do what you feel is best not what everyone else is doing nice yeah i think as well like curate your feed more we were very impressionable at that age and if you're following these victoria's secret models all these supermodels that have access to trainers this very healthy lifestyle that's dedicated purely to looking good and being a model and having that physique maybe get rid of that. Just follow some more people that are actually good for your brain, good for your heart, good for yourself. What would I say to young Chrissy?
Starting point is 00:20:50 Young Chrissy, yo Chrissy, listen. Hear what I'm saying here. Yo, listen, you're a bad bee. You're sick, yeah. You see them bushy eyebrows? They're peng bra, because everybody's rocking it right now. You understand.
