Tech Over Tea - #29 Unity, LBRY & Linux - Solo Episode

Episode Date: September 17, 2020

I was thinking of having a guest this week and then I forget to ask someone so here we are, this week I talked about way too many topics for whatever reason I couldn't stick to one thing. Unity has be...en annoying as always, I was really excited for Hololive English to begin (rightfully so), and a bit about the Linux community as well as a bunch of other nonsense. ==========Support The Channel========== ► Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/brodierobertson ► Paypal: https://www.paypal.me/BrodieRobertsonVideo ► Amazon USA: https://amzn.to/3d5gykF ► Other Methods: https://cointr.ee/brodierobertson ==========Video Release========== 📚 LBRY: https://open.lbry.com/@TechOverTea:3 🎥 YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCBq5p-xOla8xhnrbhu8AIAg DISCLOSURE: Wherever possible I use referral links, which means if you click one of the links in this video or description and make a purchase we may receive a small commission or other compensation. Starting point is 00:00:26 Oh, not loud enough. At some point I'll, I'll, I'll, I'll, I'll, I'll, I'll, I'll, I'll, I'll, I'll, I'll, I'll, I'll, I'll, I'll, I'll, I'll, I'll, I'll, I'll, I'll, I'll, I'll, I'll, I'll, I'll, I'll, I'll, I'll, I'll, I'll, I'll, I'll, I'll, I'll, I'll, I'll, I'll, I'll, I'll, I'll, I'll, I'll, I'll, I'll, I'll, I'll, I'll, I'll, I'll, I'll, I'll, I'll, I'll, I'll, I'll, I'll, I'll, I'll, I'll, I'll, I'll, I'll, I'll, I'll, I'll, I'll, I'll, I'll, I'll, I'll, I'll, I'll, I'll, I'll, I'll, I'll, I'll, I'll, I'll, I'll, I'll, I'll, I'll, I'll, I'll, I'll, I'll, I'll, I'll, I'll, I'll, I'll, I'll, I'll, I'll, I'll, I'll, I'll, I'll, I'll, I'll, I'll, I'll, I'll, I'll, I'll, I'll, I'll, I'll, I'll, I'll, I'll, I'll, I'll, I'll, I'll, I'll, I'll, I'll, I'll, I'll, I'll, I'll, I'll, I'll, I'll, I'll, I'll, I'll, I'll, I'll, I'll, I'll, I'll, I'll, I'll, I'll, I'll, I'll, I'll, I'll, I'll, I'll, going to happen but honestly the real reason is that I got lazy and I forgot to find someone to be a guest on the episode so here we are I guess but because it's a solo episode this does mean that I sort of get to talk about anything that I kind of want to talk about obviously I'm probably going to try to keep the episode still entertaining but it's not like I have to you know make sure that what I'm saying is uh entertaining for the guests and I just realized that my I closed my web browser so to fix that on screen Does it work still? Yes, it does cool. Anyway Let's let's not do that again. No, that's not the right key
Starting point is 00:01:04 I'm gonna try to fix this while I'm talking. And there we go, much better. Cool. I had it on the wrong side of my screen, it just kinda got annoying when I was trying to... You know, see the output of my face. I like it being on the left side, and then the web browser being on the right side, but... It literally doesn't matter, it's just a me thing. Anyway, yeah, so I'm just going to talk about what I want to talk about today, and maybe next week. Actually, no, next week, there is a guest. Next week, I'm bringing on the main developer, or I guess only developer would be the best, the better way to describe it, the only developer of Librarylytics. So, if you don't know what Librarylytics is, unless you're like super into library, you probably have literally no idea what librarylytics is.
Starting point is 00:01:49 Think of it... Is it gonna load? Let's see if it loads. Librarylytics is sort of like the the social blade of library. So yeah, I think it's really cool and I want to talk to developer and there are some mistakes on, this is great, this is what happens when you have one person working on a project, you miss things like this, it's not a, not a big deal, but, you know, random things that aren't capitalized, you know, always, always something nice to see, And then the week after that, I think I'm going to bring on the...
Starting point is 00:02:27 He's not... What's his position? I'm gonna bring on Electron from library. So, uh, I think he's the guy... He doesn't do the the algorithm stuff because they've actually got someone who's does that as like a career doing that and that's probably the uh, the better person who should be doing I think he was Responsible for designing the UI. I'm gonna see exactly what it says on here. God. That's a giant picture. Here we go This dude should be coming on next week
Starting point is 00:02:58 He is the design. Okay design and developer of the website cool. Anyway, yeah, he'll be on next week and then after that point I don't know. There are some people I want to ask. I might bring Brian back, or I might hit up some people I've been meaning to hit up for quite a while. I fixed this lighting just before, and it's still terrible. Is that better? Yeah, it's probably better. You guys probably didn't notice a difference. Anyway, after that point, yeah, I have no idea who's coming on, um, but I will find someone unless I forget and do another solo episode. Anyway, that's enough rambling about nothing. Actually, no, this entire, this entire podcast is rambling, so I'm sure you guys, if you're watching this, are probably used to it at this point. So anyway, the first topic I have on here
Starting point is 00:03:45 is something that I probably wouldn't be able to find anyone else to talk about with. The first topic on here is something I wouldn't be able to find anyone else to talk about with. Yeah, that's how a sentence works. Anyway, Hololive English. So as you guys might know, if you watched my screen copy video, I have Suisei as my phone wallpaper and then my lock screen is Subaru and Ui so I'm sort of a Hololive fan just a VTuber fan in general and recently there was the announcement of Hololive English so
Starting point is 00:04:23 let's see who is first I think I think by the time that this goes up, actually, no, I think later today, actually, is probably the better way to describe it. Later today, Mori is having her debut stream, which should be fun. Yeah, I think that's, when is that? 11 hours from now as of two hours ago, so that'll be what, like 8pm or something tonight? And here is the rest of the Hololive English cast. So we have,
Starting point is 00:04:53 I don't remember what her name is. What is her name? Let's find out. I probably should have remembered all their names before I started talking. hololive English hololive English we're gonna find it it came up when I searched on tweet deck let's get back to tweet deck because tweet decks actually useful and the regular Twitter website thingy is garbage. Nunamai Inanis. Yeah, there we go. That's her name. Anyway, so Mori is having her debut stream soon-ish. I'm probably going to end up watching it tonight while I'm working on my assignments because I kind of want to see the stream. And after that, I think... I think Kiara's stream is next.
Starting point is 00:05:47 This, uh, chicken right here. Uh, so if you don't know, all of, like, most of the Hololive characters end up being based on some various sort of animal. So this generation, this, uh, the English generation, they are based on, like, myths this time. So, uh, I'm not sure what, uh, Ninamaya is supposed to be, but Kiara is a phoenix, but people very quickly started calling her a chicken, because, I'll get to that in a minute, actually. Then we have, uh have Amelia, Amelia Watson, who is obviously supposed to be like fantasy detective nonsense. Then we have, on her Twitter profile right now, Mori, that one. Mori, who is obviously a reaper of some sort, and then Gura, who I'm not sure what Gura is supposed to be. I guess a shark. I guess she's supposed- I was thinking maybe something different,
Starting point is 00:06:51 because maybe it's just cosplay, but no, I think she is supposed to be a shark. Anyway, their Twitter accounts are absolutely amazing. I'll really recommend going and following them, especially Amelia's Twitter. So I'll see if I can find something amusing from it because the other day some of the stuff that they were posting Amelia Watson where is it Amelia Watson the pin tweet okay yeah this is already perfect here you go this this pretty much sums up everything you're going to get if you go follow Amelia's Twitter. So, you've all been so well behaved. I have a present for you.
Starting point is 00:07:30 Please be aware of counterfeits. And this is a free admittance to her debut stream. Sure. Oh, and she uploaded the date as the wrong date. Beautiful. But it gets even better if you go back a bit further, so they've been posting some nice art on here as well, where, where is something fun, the problem is they post way, way too much, like, if you go scroll through any Hololive, uh, any Hololive YouTuber's Twitter account, there is, there is way too much tweeting, here we go, here is a, uh, free head pat coupon, so,
Starting point is 00:08:09 if you want one of those, also don't illegally download her coupons, because, uh, that's bad, don't do that, and I think she's bullying Kiara at this point, oh lord, what am I even reading at this point, so if you're listening to the audio stream, Amelia said, I've always wanted a pet chicken. Then Kiara responded, I got some of my yard, come over. Amelia responds with saying, you're inviting me over for dinner and I mean I can cook some chicken for you if that's what you want, I got burgers too. What am I reading? So if you want a if you want a fun emote, I'm already starting to use one of
Starting point is 00:08:49 Amelia's pictures as an emote on my discord server, so you know come check that out let's see if we can find the first tweet on here, because Twitter I don't think you can reverse search here we go, here's here's is the fun look at this what is this picture what am I looking at right
Starting point is 00:09:11 now yeah here we go here's a she's that I think I don't know what you guys can see actually I'll have to check that afterwards, but, um, yeah, Amelia is lots and lots of fun, so, also, yeah, Nina Mai is, Nina Mai is whatever, um, so, if you're just listening to it, Nina Mai tweeted, oh, yes, my name's a bit long, so you can just call me Ina, and then Amelia responds with just saying, Ina, my queen, And Nina, my response, was saying, please step on me. This is what I expected. You know what? I don't know what I expected to see from Hololive English, to be honest.
Starting point is 00:09:55 I genuinely don't know what I expected. But yeah, they all look really adorable. And I'm going to have a lot of fun watching the debut streams. look really adorable and I'm going to have a lot of fun watching the debut streams and if you are someone who doesn't have a social life and want to watch garbage as well then check out the debut streams as well I think if you go to the Hololive English YouTube channel you will see a list of all of the debut stream times. So yeah, I'd recommend checking that out and you will find all of those.
Starting point is 00:10:33 I don't really have much else to say about it. Because the streams haven't really happened yet, I can't really say too much about it. Amelia looks like she's probably going to be my favorite of the crew. Let's hope that no one ends up graduating this time like happened with the fifth generation of Hololive, because, yeah, let's just not go back into whatever happened with that scandal. But since we're already on Twitter, have you... Okay, if you're not following Brian Lundunduk's twitter i would really recommend doing so because he's been going like absolutely off for the past like couple of weeks just about the riots that
Starting point is 00:11:13 have been happening in portland because being in portland himself you know it it sort of uh made him realize how just insane everything is in the u right now, and yeah, just, actually, let's see if we can find something, he, he did openly come out as a Trump supporter before, which, you know, amuses me, um, especially with some of the stuff that he said before, uh, also now he's talking about how Cuties is absolute garbage and should be removed from Netflix, which know is probably a fairly a fair position to have on that movie but yeah this is just just go follow Brian's twitter it was it was even more fun back at the start when he was still sort of like on one side of the fence on on sort of on both sides of him that's how sentences work I can't speak at all he was sort of on like both sides
Starting point is 00:12:03 of the fence and now he's just like full-on giving up and like, no, I will be a conservative at this point. Which, you know, which is sort of hilarious, especially with a lot of the, um, a lot of the general mentality that seems to exist within the Linux sphere. There's a lot of, what's, what's the best way to describe it? Uh, communist sympathizers. Yeah, I think that's the best way to describe it? Communist sympathizers. Yeah, I think that's the best way to describe it. There's a lot of left-wing people, so it's always interesting to see when someone just comes out and is like, yeah, no, I'm not crazy. So yeah, I don't really have much else to say about that. That's sort of a short topic. Just go follow Lunduk's Twitter because it's fun.
Starting point is 00:12:48 Yeah, so recently I've also been working on some stuff with Unity again. So I've still been using Unity to do my honors project. I've also got my VR course, Nonsense, where I'm doing Unity stuff as well. And for a while there, I was thinking, hey, maybe Unity... maybe Unity isn't that bad. I was very wrong. Now Unity is actually still garbage. It's... I don't know if it's just the older version of Unity that I'm running, because I'm running... I've got two versions that I'm running, because I'm running, I've got two versions that I'm running. I'm running 2019.2 and 2018.4.5 LTS, and they're both very broken, and I can't imagine that newer versions of Unity are any less broken. So, the problem I have with 2018.4.5 is, okay, on this system right here,
Starting point is 00:13:42 I'm also running Windows and on the Windows system I've got my owners project working and that all works you know just fine then I went and pulled down the code on this right here so this is a Microsoft surface oh I think yeah this is this is a Microsoft surface I'm sure you've seen servicesaces before. They are the... yeah I don't have so much to say about a Surface. Anyway, I went and installed Unity 2018.4.5 on that and I downloaded the code and I tried to run the code and there were build errors which didn't make sense because I was running
Starting point is 00:14:20 the exact same code on this computer. So I went and copied the code over the USB because maybe for some reason there was just a problem putting it into git. I thought maybe that would be the issue and then I tried to run the code again, still didn't work and it was saying oh you're missing some assembly references for TM Pro. And TM Pro is one of the default installed packages. That's TextMeshPro. So if we go look it up.
Starting point is 00:14:55 Unity TextMeshPro 2018. Let's see if we can find it. 2018 Let's see if we can find it There is a known problem with Techsmash Pro in 2018 and the problem Sort of should it only exist if you're trying to migrate the project from an older version to a newer version However, I'm not doing that. So all of these fixes for what's wrong with TechSmash Pro
Starting point is 00:15:32 don't work. So I don't know what the actual problem was, how I should go about fixing it. This is even remotely where I should look for it, because I've tried to do everything that has been suggested for methods to fix it for this case right here, like clearing out your package cache. I've tried to reinstall clearing out your package cache. I've tried to reinstall it with a package manager. However, the Unity package manager is also missing as well. So it is possible that for some reason, the install of Unity just didn't get done right. I don't know how it's possible.
Starting point is 00:16:05 But it's very possible that that is what has actually happened here. Because even if I start up a new project, we have the exact same problem. So I'm guessing, yeah, it's probably that. But my solution, because I don't care, I don't actually need to run it on the surface. All I need this surface for is for the multi-touch. Because I can't say too much about it it but the project I'm doing now is no longer a VR project it's still the data visualization stuff but it's now using a multi-touch screen instead of VR. So all I needed was the multi-touch input so luckily in Windows 10 there is this feature called I think cast or something
Starting point is 00:16:44 I don't know the exact name. You can do it with third-party tools as well, but it's built into Windows now. So, you can basically cast a computer to another computer, and it theoretically should just magically work. Now, I had a weird problem where, for some reason, it was like, oh, you're not on a secure network, and it just wouldn't work. So, I was like, okay, just let it work on any network. And luckily that managed to fix it. So basically all I'm doing now is casting my main system over to the surface and then
Starting point is 00:17:12 running it like that. And it works fine. It manages to pass the multi-touch input through just fine. It manages to, it's a little laggy because it's doing it over Wi-Fi because obviously the surface doesn't have an Ethernet port. And if I was to put this... Actually... I wonder.
Starting point is 00:17:33 Maybe I could plug in my USB Ethernet adapter to the Surface. And then do Ethernet over with my desktop as well. And then that would work. Maybe. I don't know. But it's fine. It works well enough where I can test the input. With my desktop as well, and then that would work maybe? I don't know, but it's fine. It works well enough where I can test the input because that's all I need to do. Once I know the inputs working, I can kind of just ignore the fact that the surface exists. Yeah, I wish that was the end of the problems though because... The problems continue from there.
Starting point is 00:18:05 Now, I don't like game engines on the best of days. I think they're kind of a waste of time. And you might as well just go and do everything with libraries. So the first thing that comes up when you type in libgdx is libgdx versus Unity. So I genuinely do not like game engines. I think they're a big waste of time and you might as well go use a game library like libgdx or go use like OpenGL directly. It's going to be just fine for you. The reason why you use an engine is because an engine is supposed to you know make things easier. It's supposed to handle things
Starting point is 00:18:45 that you don't need to handle yourself. Why does this have support for Blackberry devices? Who's you... sure. What... what? I did not know I had support for Blackberry. Anyway, I'm kind of getting off track there. The reason you use a game engine is to make things easier. However, Unity does not do that. In some cases, it actually makes things significantly harder. So if you run, at least in 2019.2, if you... 2019.2? 2018.4.5.
Starting point is 00:19:16 If you run input.touches, and you run get mouse button down zero, whatever the command is to get the mouse input. If you run that, like those two commands, they will both return true when you touch the screen. So if you are touching the screen, it counts it as both a touch input and also a regular mouse input, which means you actually have to conditionally handle both of them at the same time if you want to do touch input. Now this doesn't sound like that big of a deal except for the fact that this is what a game engine is supposed to do. It's supposed to make things like this easier so I don't have to think about oh this is how you know
Starting point is 00:19:57 handling basic input should be done. Handling basic input is something that should be done by the engine itself. I shouldn't have to say, oh, I'm touching the screen, is, oh, I'm clicking the mouse, am I also not touching the screen? That's not something I should have to do. Obviously, if I do want to do some hacky stuff where I'm doing both at the same time, that's different. But if I am just regularly touching the screen, that should not be counted as a mouse click. And it took me like three or four hours to realize what was happening here because my input manager was basically doubling up on every input. I was
Starting point is 00:20:37 like, why? Because I've got an action on double tap. So when I touch the screen, that counts it as a tap and also a click. So that means that's going to count as a double tap. So when I touch the screen that counts it as a tap and also a click so that means that's gonna count as a double tap and basically that action was running all the time and I was like why is this working it's not like I was looking at the code where it should be getting handled for touch input and I was like there's nothing happening here what is going on and lo and behold it was Unity being garbage. So yeah if you do want to get into game development i know that a lot of people you know like oh you should use unity or you should use unreal
Starting point is 00:21:14 unless you're doing some like triple a title unless you're doing some like really big game a game engine is going to be detrimental for you. I really believe that. If you want to do any sort of just entry-level game development, unless you're specifically doing the game development for the sake of learning Unity, just don't. Just don't use a game engine. Just use a library. Now, this is talking from the perspective of someone who has't use a game engine, just use a library, now this is talking from the perspective of someone who has never released a game myself, but I do know how god-awful using Unity is, so I'm going to say don't use it, I'm not saying you have to use something like libgdx, as I said you could use OpenGL, or there are plenty of other examples out there you could use. libGDX is a Java and a whatever the thing on Java that's being replaced
Starting point is 00:22:12 whatever is replacing Java on Android. There might be other bindings though I don't actually know let's see yeah I think it looks like it's just Java okay so yeah maybe libGDX isn't really the best one to choose from just because Java is don't develop games in Java It's a bad idea. I've used libGDX before Just don't But if you are doing any game development just ignore the fact that OO exists. Oh, that's another thing So with my current project, I'm doing it in 2019.2. So basically I'm completely ignoring the fact that you can do things like find in the like
Starting point is 00:22:53 Unity hierarchy because that's really slow. So I'm just forgetting that all that exists because it's dumb. So instead of that what I'm doing is when I create an object I'm just keeping a reference to it in my game data and then working from there. Because that's much quicker to look up instead of being like, oh, I'm going to search this big tree for an object that I don't know if even exists. Like, no. Just split up your object into arrays. The arrays will be much smaller. Also use arrays. Don't use lists because lists are going to aggravate your garbage collector unless Unity is messing with the C sharp garbage collector in the background I don't see really you know anything being beneficial from using the built-in Unity methods plus as I said searching the tree is just just inherently slow so yeah don't do that. I feel like I'm knocking off topic
Starting point is 00:23:49 really quickly though this is sort of what happens when I do the solo cast sometimes they go really well sometimes they become a train wreck I feel like the start was bad but whatever we're here now but besides those things I think you need I think Unity... I haven't used Unreal, so I can't really speak for Unreal, but also Unreal is C++, so you know C++ is just not a fun language to work with in general. So it's probably a pain in that way, and I can imagine it has its own sort of weird peculiarities where you have to work around the engine. If what you're trying to do perfectly aligns with the game engine, a game engine will be perfect what you're trying to do.
Starting point is 00:24:32 However, if it doesn't and it's sort of like, you know, slightly off, it's going to be a pain because you're going to have to just, you know, work entirely around the engine, but hey, as I said, not a developer, or not a game developer myself, I could be completely wrong, this is sort of my experience using Unity for, you know, basically a couple months now, so as I said, could be wrong, anyway, um, yeah, I did see something entertaining, last week, yeah, last week on the podcast, I talked about, actually, can I get to my YouTube channel, YouTube, just go to website, and go to tech over tea, so, I did a clip where I talked about the Atari VCS. Now it seems like there was a lot of people, well okay a lot of people for the number
Starting point is 00:25:35 of views I got, that didn't really like that topic and I'm not really sure why. Because the Atari VCS is actually a really really dumb idea. There's one guy on here who commented who got kind of annoyed with it. Where is it? Here we go. Okay. I don't care, you clowns. I already pre-ordered a system and it's gonna be a awesome console. You've pre-ordered a $400 Raspberry Pi. I don't understand why anyone was excited for this and I found out some more, you know, some more backstory about this as well. Apparently, this was a Kickstarter project that people weren't even sure if it's going to exist and
Starting point is 00:26:18 Atari VCS... is it Kickstarter? Indiegogo, sorry. Just as bad. Actually, I think Indiegogo might be worse. So they wanted four... Okay, they wanted $100,000. They got $4 million. And we're still waiting for production. How long ago was this?
Starting point is 00:26:43 2018. So, apparently there has been production issues with this and people weren't even sure if it's going to exist. Let's have a look at the comments. Awesome new Atari Tank Fury trailer on... Yeah, people are going to buy this and it doesn't make any sense why people are buying this But hey if you want to waste your money on a $400 Raspberry Pi
Starting point is 00:27:15 That is your money John was as The John was slash is just an Atari fan who backed an Atari IGD project and he was counting on how the Atari IGD project forum should have been filled with Atari fans from day one I don't know what that's about but I'm just speaking from a third third hand knowledge where I I've heard there's been production issues but I didn't bother to look into it because I just don't care I don't I don't know to look into it because I just don't care.
Starting point is 00:27:47 I don't know why this console even exists. It's just a Raspberry Pi. It's just a... Okay, it's not just a Raspberry Pi. It's basically just a Raspberry Pi for $400. There's no reason why you should buy this. You should just go buy a Raspberry Pi. Actually, no, better yet, I guarantee there are people on Fiverr who are doing the exact same thing for way cheaper, they'll sell your Raspberry Pi with all this kitted out already, just so you can, you know,
Starting point is 00:28:12 already have your nonsense where you have, like, your Atari games where you can run on your fucking graphing calculator, you don't need a 8 gigs of RAM for that, that's dumb, um, yeah, and you can do it with a first-gen Raspberry Pi as well, and it's gonna be like $50. So this is dumb, and I'm not going to talk about it anymore from this point on, because it's probably gonna fade into obscurity because it doesn't make any sense. Especially with the next-gen consoles coming out, where they are literally just computers. Like there's nothing. That it. There's nothing about the next gen consoles. That says this is not a computer.
Starting point is 00:28:49 I don't even know what they're called. What are. Xbox One Series X or something. Is that. That sounds right. Yeah. That's what they are. So it's the Xbox Series X and S.
Starting point is 00:29:02 And the reason why I bring those up. Is because there is a payment program Let's show the ps5 next Okay, Google to duck that goes kind of garbage sometimes Next gen console payment Payment model payment something included Microsoft introduces a monthly financing program for its Xbox offered for its new Xbox consoles so basically what this is is you can pay $25 a month and get a series s console or $35 a
Starting point is 00:29:40 month and get yourself a series X. Now you would think maybe oh is this a this is a solid deal. No, no this is actually dumb and you shouldn't do it. So if you can't afford to buy a console outright you should not be buying it. Now this isn't me saying that oh if you don't have that much money you shouldn't be buying stuff. No, what you should be doing isn't getting yourself into situations where you're paying Monthly or weekly bills what you should be doing instead is if you want to go buy these consoles Save that money yourself put it into an account and then once you have enough then go and buy it The money is not going to disappear if you you know spend it over a month the amount of money you The amount of money you spend or have isn't going to disappear if you spend it over a monthly or the amount of money you
Starting point is 00:30:25 the amount of money you spend or have isn't going to change based on whether you save it or whether you spend it monthly so if instead of like spending this $25 a month you put $25 a month into an account eventually you will have the amount of money you need to buy the console. And maybe if you save a little bit longer, then you can buy some extra stuff alongside it. And also, as I said, you do not want to get yourself into a situation where you have extra monthly debt for no reason, especially when you're in a situation where it's very likely that a lot of countries are going to be going into pretty bad recessions over the next year or next two years.
Starting point is 00:31:09 Just Australia has gone into a recession right now. We've gone down, I think our GDP has dropped 7%. And we still have our government welfare scheme nonsense going on right now. But that's supposed to be ending soon. So once that ends, then we get to really see what the effects are going to be. Because right now, a lot of people are making more money than they would have been making if they were at work. So once that ends, then we're going to start to see how much it hurts. And when that starts to happen, that's not when you want to be taking on more debt.
Starting point is 00:31:45 That's when you want to be, you know, saving as much money as you can. And then if you want to buy a luxury like that, then you can go buy a luxury when you actually have that money saved up. It's the same thing with phones as well. Getting yourself a phone plan is a massive scam. I have never had a phone plan because it's really, really dumb, and all of these phone companies will trick you into getting them because they make you think they are a good deal, because it's like, oh, you get, you got this, you get like 100 gigs of data, you get this, and
Starting point is 00:32:18 you get that, and you get that, and other thing, and you're not gonna use half of it. It's like, oh, here's a thousand minutes of international calls. You're never gonna use an international call, and you're not gonna use half of it it's like oh here's a thousand minutes of international calls you're never gonna use an international call unless you're calling like your grandma in some other country because what you're going to do is you're going to call them using like facebook messenger or something like that because it's free so international minutes are dumb and phone plans that try to include them as some extra are dumb as well but the other problem you get with those phone plans is you also end up spending way more on the phone than you otherwise would have so you might buy something like let's say we'll go to the phone that I don't actually know the price of this is a realme 5 pro it's like $300 if you get the same phone on a phone plan, even accounting for like the
Starting point is 00:33:06 extras you get, you end up paying like five and six hundred dollars or five or six hundred. Yeah that's how sentences work. You pay you pay way more than the actual price of the phone. Whereas what you could have done is had maybe a prepaid solution, buy your phone outright and then you can actually, you know, save a bit of money. There is so many people who get onto these payment plans, whether it be through phone plans, whether it be through Afterpay, or through this nonsense right here, that take on debt they really do not need to take on, just because they want to buy something now. You don't need to buy it now. Okay, especially with these next-gen consoles. Everyone has
Starting point is 00:33:49 known they've been coming out for the last... when did the PS4 come out? Since whenever the PS4 came out. They've known there's gonna be a next generation of consoles eventually. And do you know how you buy the console generation after the one you're on? You start saving the second the current gen console comes out. And then, lo and behold, you have plenty of money to buy the console after that. But, someone's probably going to say, but I can't afford to save that money. Well, if you can't afford to save that money every month, then you couldn't afford to pay that monthly bill anyway. So it's not really a fair point to make at that point.
Starting point is 00:34:29 Obviously, there are people who aren't going to be able to afford the latest and greatest console. And those are the sort of people who weren't going to buy them anyway. But if you were going to buy them, there's no reason why you have to use these payment schemes. Especially the ones that have interest. I don't know if this one of the Xbox series nonsense has any interest on it, or if it's just paying for the actual cost of the console. I would presume it probably does have some interest in it somewhere.
Starting point is 00:35:00 It says $25 a month, but it doesn't say for how many months. So if that's $25 a month but it doesn't say for how many months so if that's $25 a month for more months than the price of the console then obviously that's not going to be a good deal if it's the exact price of the console at least you're not spending any more money there but you still shouldn't be getting yourself into the habit of taking on more debt that you don't need. Because let's say this. Let's say instead of spending $25 a month, let's say you put $25 a month into an account. And let's say there's one month where you're really strapped for money
Starting point is 00:35:35 and you desperately need that extra $25. Now, if you had done the $25 a month payment directly to Microsoft, you would not have that $25. But if you put it into a bank account, then all you have to do is for that one month, skip the payment and then use the money for whatever you need to use the money for. Now, you really shouldn't be buying consoles if you're that strapped for cash, but we'll just assume that you are for the sake of this discussion. In that situation, not paying the money directly to Microsoft will be, you know, obviously something that massively improves your life. So yeah, don't take on extra debt you don't need to take on.
Starting point is 00:36:18 There are situations where you can take on sensible debt. For example, if you're trying to build up a credit rating. In that case, you are intentionally taking on debt for the sake of paying it off. So, you're going to buy all your groceries with a credit card that you already have money for. So, you're going to pay off the bill straight away, but using the credit card will let you build up your credit rating and nonsense like that. So, you can eventually get yourself a house loan that is a sensible way to take on debt when you're taking on debt that you can already pay for when you're taking on debt that you don't know if you're going to be able to pay for that is a very very different situation and should be avoided at all costs now obviously there are times where you can't avoid it for example if you're trying to most most people
Starting point is 00:37:06 aren't going to buy like a 500 car so most situations you can't avoid taking on debt when you're trying to buy a car however most people also don't need a 10 or a 12 grand car you can go and get yourself that something that's like three or four thousand dollars that's going to be a fairly decent car. And most people will be fine with that, unless you're doing like a driving job. You don't need something much more expensive than that. My car, for instance, is like $4,000.
Starting point is 00:37:36 That's $4,000 Australian as well. So that's like $2,500 US. And it's been fine for a couple of years, obviously, when you're in that price range, you have to be a bit more picky about what you're going to choose, because there will be some cars that are, you know, being upsold, and there's going to be some cars that have, like, various, various pieces of damage that you really don't want to be taking on, because they're going to end up being more of a hassle than it otherwise would have been to spend like a couple extra thousand on a car
Starting point is 00:38:09 so in those situations yeah it might be sensible to take on some debt or obviously when you're buying a house most people don't really have the money to you know buy a house in cash it would be nice to have that money but most people don't have that money so in that situation yeah it's fine as well but you should also be very very much considering whether it's the best thing to be doing should it should you be taking on that debt or should you be looking at some other way where you can save some money now if for example your rent is more expensive than your mortgage would have been it's probably
Starting point is 00:38:49 Yeah, if your rent is more expensive than your mortgage would be then you probably should go down that mortgage route But I'm not a financial advisor go speak to one of those I'm kind of just someone who rambles about nonsense on the internet with no clue in the world. Hmm. Oh Lord nonsense on the internet with no clue in the world. Oh Lord. My sleep has been a mess lately it's gonna get worse so I'm still in the sort of process of switching stores and this other store I'm going to they like to do midnight finishes so that means my sleep is gonna be real funky, especially on the days where I have classes at, uh, nine in the morning, oh, and also my sleep's just generally bad anyway, so, hey, uh, we'll see how that goes in the future, but generally when I have a guest on, it's usually a
Starting point is 00:39:39 bit easier, um, so one other thing I want to talk about was, because I've been talking about it for like 10 minutes now, I wanted to talk about Hive. So, I still think that Hive is, what's the best way to describe it? It's got some problems in a lot of places. So, can I find my followers? Is that a thing I can do? Following followers? What am I looking for? Let's find it. You guys probably can't even see much I'm seeing right now. I'll just switch back here and we'll try to do it another way. So if I go to Uncle Bonehead's thing because I've got nothing on my account yet.
Starting point is 00:40:18 I still have problems with the way that Hive handles its password system where it has like five different keys to do stuff and there's no real easy way to recover these keys either so if you lose your key then you're kind of screwed which really does hurt its adoptability with people outside of the cryptosphere. However, I still think it has plenty of room to grow and I do think that it can eventually grow to the point where it's sort of encompassing a lot of the Linux sphere as well and a lot of the gaming sphere. I think a lot of those people would be willing to take on a platform
Starting point is 00:40:58 like this. I don't think it's ever going to be a big platform outside of sort of techie people, just because of those issues it has with its password system that it forked from Steam, where it was a bad idea there, and it's still a bad idea here. But because it has that room to grow, I am thinking of bringing some of my content over here at some point, now, I don't know when, this is another one of those projects where I want to, I want to take it on at some point, however, I don't know when, just because I'm sort of busy with uni and stuff, and if I'm going to be uploading on Hive, then I'm also going to be doing blog posts alongside what I'm posting as well. So those posts might also end up going on... Oh, jeez.
Starting point is 00:41:48 I was sorry for you all the entire time. Those posts might also end up going on... Read.cash and mines as well. Because even though it has this problem, I still think it's going to be a good idea to be on here in the long term. Just on the off chance that it does... Okay, just on the off chance that it does happen to grow outside of the sphere I think it's going to grow in. There is a very, very tiny possibility that it does.
Starting point is 00:42:18 But if it does, then I do want to be here and I want to be here as early as possible. I have actually started buying some hive as well, just because it seems to be doing fairly well and even if I'm not actively using the platform myself, I think that holding some of the token is going to be a good idea for me in the long run as well. Unlike Library has been for quite a while now. Libraries had plenty of problems with just not being a good video platform. They just, up until very recently, they didn't even acknowledge the fact that they were kind of a terrible video platform. They always talked about, oh, here's this, um,
Starting point is 00:42:58 here's this new cool blockchain feature, here's this other cool feature, here's this other thing. Completely disregarded the fact that the user interface was absolutely terrible. Now, luckily they have sort of started to address that. So I'll see if I can find it. I'll just take it off the screen for just a moment. It's not something I need to hide because it is public information but they don't want the password for it being shared outside of the Discord channel right now. But, you know, if you go join the Librarynomics Discord channel, you will be able to get this password.
Starting point is 00:43:39 So, let's see. Also, when you type in the password, it's in plain text and visible on the screen which is always amusing to see so this right here is Odyssey now I can't really show it super well maybe if I expand this yeah okay it's going off the screen now but when you have stuff when you have a full screen it will actually fill up your entire screen with content. So this is the I guess beta for library's new interface. Now I really hope
Starting point is 00:44:15 that this ends up going away because it does not fit the page. I get the haha we're gonna talk about how Google got rid of the don't be evil thing but this really doesn't fit on the page and should be gone But I guess library is going through sort of a rebranding now They're going to go from calling themselves library TV for the video platform side to Odyssey now Odyssey is obviously spelled wrong because library likes to do that. I Don't know why maybe actually maybe the Odyssey domain spelt correctly was already taken so like screw it We're just gonna use this one instead
Starting point is 00:44:53 But besides the obviously fixed UI and this god-awful thing here the General interface actually does look better in other places as well. So, let's find something. Let's say we're going to click on this quartering video right here. So, let's just pause that. We have a like and a dislike button now, which is really, really nice to see. I don't know why they didn't have them until this point. I don't know if they do anything. have them until this point. I don't know if they do anything. I think it's sort of just a way for a user to show whether they like the content or not, rather than
Starting point is 00:45:30 it being here's actually something that does anything. Maybe later down the line it will start to affect the algorithm, but for now it's sort of just a nothing. And they also went and fixed the comments. The comments still aren't great. Comment chains I don't think work perfectly yet, but this box takes up the entire screen, and it takes up the entire screen if you're on full screen as well, which is good to see, because having it, before it took like half the screen, and then these related videos like onto the side here it didn't make any sense as a layout. Now the... I don't know if you can see it... So yeah I think you can. So if I move this over here and I go full screen now the related videos are off to the right hand side here which looks a bit more
Starting point is 00:46:21 like the way YouTube does but it's just a much better interface. So, personally, I think that this is the direction libraries needed to go in a, or for a very long time. I don't particularly like the fact that they are doing a rebranding to do it. I would have preferred that they stuck with the library branding and then, you know, just renamed, or not renamed, then just stuck with the library branding and then used this new interface. Because what you're going to have happen is all of the existing advertising content for library basically goes out the window because people are going to search for library. They're going to find the library website and then they're going to give up because they can't find the videos from that point
Starting point is 00:47:08 so i am going to be having a talk with julian chandra in a couple of days he's the head of promotion i think is his title at library and he's sort of one of the people very involved with this shift over to odyssey because obviously he's their promotion guy so he's sort of one of the people very involved with this shift over to Odyssey, because obviously he's their promotion guy, so he's part of the reason why their name has changed. Library does have a problem as a name, but at this point, until I get some justification from Julian, I think it doesn't really make sense to throw out those existing years of marketing.
Starting point is 00:47:48 Because, yeah, people get distracted very quickly. If they can't find your video platform basically in one click, they're going to give up. Obviously, there are people who are going to spend a bit more time looking at it, but those are the people who you've probably already convinced to use your platform anyway. So, yeah, that's sort of my take on that. I do think the UI is exceptional though. So as long as the UI comes to the desktop app, I'll probably start using it a bit more often. I still want my
Starting point is 00:48:19 notifications and notifications if you didn't notice were here as well so I'm obviously not logged in at this point so I can't show you any but I would like to see notifications come to the desktop app and I want to see this UI come to the desktop app as well and as I mentioned earlier if you do want to come check this out for yourself go join the library nomics discord. Or I guess you could join the Foundation server. And there is a post on there. And you can find the password for it. Now...
Starting point is 00:48:53 Yeah. I don't have too much else to say about that either. It's sort of just, hey, this is a cool thing that's happened. Yeah. Yeah. I don't know why I'm doing this one on so tight. I could have done this tomorrow, and it probably would have been slightly better.
Starting point is 00:49:13 I can't promise it'd be good, but it'd be slightly better. Speaking of things that are slightly better, this is a bad segue. I found out that DT has a Discord server. I don't think he's ever active in it, but DT has a Discord server. That's a think he's ever active in it, but DT has a Discord server. That's a distro tube in case you're not in the Linux sphere and you somehow came across this channel. Now his Discord server might actually be worse than mine. I'm not gonna, you know, read out any
Starting point is 00:49:38 of the messages in there, but if you join my Discord server, you know there are some people in there who are a little bit, what's the best way to describe it? A little bit spicy in what they say, and generally, I try to make sure it doesn't get too bad, because I don't want people, uh, you know, just starting to throw out, like, racial epithets and various things like that, because I don't particularly want that attached to my name. As for DistroTube server on the other hand, because there's no moderators, he doesn't moderate it himself, it's basically just a free-for-all and pretty much anything happens in there and it's a it's a fun place to be but you know it's it's also not super active I think it's because he doesn't advertise it. I like mentioned
Starting point is 00:50:24 the fact that I've just, no I don't even mention the fact that I have one that often. I've just done some videos on it where I mention it. And I guess people find it from there or check my description or something. But I don't know why it's not very active. Considering the fact that he has like 5x... Actually, 6 or 7x my subscriber count. You would think that more people would check his description and see that he has a discord server because apparently it's been in his description for a couple of months now and
Starting point is 00:50:56 No one's really worked it out I don't think the exact numbers in his server, but it's it's a fraction of mine and when it comes to active people I Definitely have way more active people in my server. I think there's some there is a little bit of crossover between the two of them, but generally people active in mine. I think it might also have to do with the fact that I'm actually active in the server and typically when people join a creators Discord server, they're typically joining for the purpose of actually talking to the creator and because DT is never in the channel That probably convinces some people to join and then they leave when they realize he's not actually around
Starting point is 00:51:34 But I don't know could be wrong could just be the fact that he's never actually made a video on it the fact that I've made I think two or three plus I've got my Videos where I cover Discord clients, whenever I do one of those videos, I notice I get a bit of a spike, typically because I show off the Discord server in that video, which does actually help, Jesus Christ, I'm yawning a lot this episode, um, maybe do a shot every time I yawn and you'll probably die. Yeah. Oh, that's actually a good one.
Starting point is 00:52:16 That's not really. Chris Titus. Chris Titus did a video on... I guess it was a two-year update video. So, I guess he's been making videos for he's got 200,000 subscribers what the fuck when did Chris hit 215,000 subscribers yeah so he has 200,000 subscribers he's been doing this for like two or so years. And I watched this video and people on my Discord server was like, oh, it's a sort of cringy video. But I look at it in a very different way.
Starting point is 00:53:01 The way I look at this video is this is someone who has been super, super dedicated for the past, you know, however long. I don't, I think the first year he made videos once a day, every single day, and then this year, it's once every other day, but this is someone who's been super, super dedicated to making sure that they put out content every day, or basically every day, making sure that content's good, trying to improve his content over time, and just generally building a business, just building a business yourself and i find that to be really admirable i don't particularly watch much of chris's content just because a lot of his stuff is very very beginner friendly and it's not the sort of stuff that i really find interest in watching now i do make some of those beginner friendly videos myself but i don't
Starting point is 00:53:46 personally find any value in watching them for myself that's not to say they're not valuable that's just to say that i'm sort of past the point where a lot of those topics are super valuable for me for example if you want to know how to switch from windows 10 to Linux Mint. Like, that's not something I really have any interest in, or minimal Windows 10 install, or how to set up... Actually, this one might be interesting. Or actually, de-Google or Google for my mouse would be cool, but this one here.
Starting point is 00:54:18 Customizing your first Linux install, things like that. Or choosing my web browser, things like that. Those sorts of videos, I don't typically find any reason to watch but I get why people watch them and I get why people are enjoying them and I'm actually really happy with the fact that he's managed to actually make it this far because I didn't think that making Linux content you could really get yourself a channel that's this big because I think second to Chris that I can think of would probably be Luke and Luke is at...
Starting point is 00:54:52 I think Luke is at like 99 point something? Luke is at 99.6. I guarantee that when he hits 100k He's not gonna be around to make a video because when was his last video? Three weeks ago. Luca's a absolutely horrendous YouTuber. He makes amazing videos but he is a terrible YouTuber. He will like what how often does he take breaks? So three weeks ago three weeks okay he did a couple of videos this in this one and then last, he did like five videos. As I said, he's a terrible YouTuber.
Starting point is 00:55:30 All of his videos are really good. So, I see why his channel is so big as well. But I feel like if Luke actually did put in the effort, he probably could have a channel around the same size as Chris. But he's just going off and around the same size as Chris, but he's just going off and done his like boomer thing, living in the forest somewhere, and doesn't really care about the fact that he's built up this really, really good position for himself, with only 340 videos, this is actually a really small amount of videos for the size of this channel especially when you look at Chris. Chris is at 555 videos and I think I'm
Starting point is 00:56:08 I think I'm at like close to 400. So yeah obviously my content's been pretty bad for a while so it's fair that uh I don't have the same level of growth but Luke on the other hand makes amazing content he's just, really lazy with making it and... I don't know. The fact that he's got this position where 4chan really likes him and that's sort of where a lot of his subscribers come from, as you can probably tell from his comment section. But he doesn't really take advantage of that fact. I
Starting point is 00:56:47 know he's been doing, occasionally doing some stuff on Peertube, and he does occasionally upload like, what's the word I'm thinking of, exclusive content on Peertube, but still generally he's not uploading that much content just, you know, in general. Generally in general generally in general i'm saying things that make literally no sense this week i could have just started the recording again like back at the start now that i'm an hour in i i'm not doing that so yeah i think chris is uh doing really good content not my content uh but really good content anyway speaking of someone else who's making content mr. Brian Lunduk his videos holy shit I don't know how
Starting point is 00:57:34 his videos have been doing this badly recently so he has 69,000 subscribers. His views are less than mine. I don't know what Lunduk has done to piss people off. I just, I genuinely don't know. Is it, is it this video right here? Myth Macros is based on Linux or BSD. Actually, his videos did drop off when he did the video is open source similar to socialism Maybe there was a lot of a lot of commies subscribed to his channel and now that
Starting point is 00:58:15 Now he uploaded that is it like we're but He also did this video talking about his locals and that did like He also did this video talking about his locals and that did like Got kind of downvoted a lot, but before this point like look at this most of his videos do fairly well It's like ah three and a half thousand. It's not great for a channel with 70,000 subscribers But it's still more than what he's doing right now so like three and a half thousand four and a half thousand two and a half thousand eight and a, 5,500. And then after this point, 1K, 1.2, 790, 1.5, 1K, 913, 1.8. 1.8 is terrible for a channel his size, but at least that's in the realm that's slightly higher than my typical views.
Starting point is 00:59:02 I typically get in the realm of one to two and a half on most content. The two and a half is on like the higher end when I do a video on like some cool Alacrity feature or I do some really, really normie friendly video. In those videos they typically do well. If I do something like here's this random github application does a very specific task Those typically get around a thousand views which is still really impressive for that sort of content I wouldn't have ever expected that I can make videos talking about just literal nonsense on github and still managed to like build up a following around that but I
Starting point is 00:59:43 Don't know what's going with with Lunduk's views here. I'm assuming that he probably pissed people off. It may have something to do with what's been going on on his Twitter, because I know he lost like a thousand Twitter followers, like two thousand Twitter followers. So maybe that's finally hit his YouTube channel. He hasn't lost subscribers though. It's... I think it's sort of just... People are not watching his content and it might also have something to do with the fact they don't really like uh Matt here I don't know that's possible when Lon Luke's by himself he typically makes fairly interesting content I know
Starting point is 01:00:17 some people are going to disagree with that but I feel like his content is still fairly interesting but but I don't know is it it a common trend whenever he has Matt on the channel? No, even back in, back in the past, when he had Matt on the channel, he was doing just fine, even when he was literally just reading articles that he wrote, like, 10 years ago, even those videos did well, even when he was doing live streams all the time, those did well as well, but some reason, something has happened recently, where his videos have just completely tanked and whether it has something to do with this video right here, I don't know, whether it has to do with this, I don't know, but it is something that has happened. Since we're
Starting point is 01:00:59 on the trend of talking about creators, we're going to talk about another Brian, Mr. Brian Jenks, who has been on the channel before, but his channel has sort of been, I wouldn't say exploding is the best way to describe it, but it's certainly been growing way faster than it has been in the past. So what's he at in the past month? 590 subscribers in the last 30 days, right?
Starting point is 01:01:26 That doesn't sound like that much until you consider the fact that he's only on 1,800. Like that is a massive, massive growth. That is a what? 33% growth in the past month? That is... Actually, no, more than that. That's not how numbers work.
Starting point is 01:01:44 That's a 50% improvement because he would have been at 1,'s not how numbers work. That's a 50% improvement because he would have been at 1200 plus 600. Yeah, that's a 50% improvement. I can't do math. So his content has been getting really good lately. He's got this like fancy intro now. He's got a green screen as well. He does this sort of bit where he talks at the start,
Starting point is 01:02:01 which with a green screen and a suit on, which is a bit more effort than I would ever feel like putting into a video. I'm gonna wear, I will always be wearing a tank top or a jacket and maybe have a green screen one day, but this is too much effort. But his videos are actually really good. He typically talks about like our markdown stuff, which is out of my realm of expertise. Obviously being a channel that has 1800 subscribers you don't get that many views but he's still getting really really good views for a channel that is that size like 650 views for 1800 subscribers is pretty crazy um so i'm glad he's doing really well
Starting point is 01:02:43 and i'm glad that his channel is growing a lot, I do want to bring him back on the show, because he was fun to talk to last time, he's better than, uh, Luke when it comes to being lazy with uploads, but, you know, he's still, still sort of lazy, it's only very recently we started doing this thumbnail style, I didn't even know, he's cut the picture wrong. There's just this red line of pixels. Beautiful. Yeah, if I was to do this, I would have this continuing down just so it doesn't look terrible. But his old thumbnails obviously weren't doing super well for him. Being older videos, they've got some views now but some of these thumbnails
Starting point is 01:03:25 are just really bad. Like look at this. I cannot. This isn't just you seeing this. I cannot read this image. There is nothing on here that says to me like this is a good thumbnail I want to click. But some of them interesting especially when he was literally just copying Luke. literally just copying Luke, but he's definitely come into his, uh, his own, come into his own as a creator at this point, and I think this new style was actually really, really good for him, and hopefully it does well for him going forward, I'm going to yawn again, I'm going to yawn again this is just the yawning episode I thought this podcast was going to go for two hours but it's probably not
Starting point is 01:04:11 it might go for like an hour and a half I don't know um what do I have in the list I can't speak um oh right recently vimconf 2020 happened now, there's very good reason why I mentioned Vimconf 2020 Is it called Vimconf 2020? I think it is it was an on yeah Vimconf live
Starting point is 01:04:42 here you go, so it was a vimconf live here you go so it was a online vim conference and the reason why I mentioned this is because I actually was invited to this I don't I don't actually know why I was invited but I did get invited however I couldn't make it to the time they wanted like oh yeah we'll let you know if anything happens at the time and I never got an email. So that's why I wasn't actually a speaker there. But maybe next year I'll do something. I don't know. Vim as a word processor.
Starting point is 01:05:16 That's interesting. I don't know what I would talk about if I did that. But I would certainly be interested in actually participating next year. If they do another online conference. If it's obviously in another country, that's going to be a little bit harder to do. But if they're doing another online one, maybe. Maybe I will. I don't know.
Starting point is 01:05:36 YouTuber and Vim enthusiast. Maybe he's the one who ended up taking my position as the YouTuber. I don't know. But I don't know why I got invited to this in the first place, because I don't feel like I know that much about Vim. I sort of just talk about Vim occasionally. I know I have like 30 Vim videos, but I still don't think that's really that much about Vim,
Starting point is 01:06:04 because there are channels that are specifically dedicated to Vim. I'm sort of just fumbling around with it, trying to make it the perfect editor for me. Per- f- f- f- f- f- for me. While also trying to turn it into Emacs, because turning it into Emacs gets a lot of people really annoyed and I'm not entirely sure why I Did a video a while back where I talked about how there's not just one correct way to use Vim There's actually like a it's Vim you can do whatever you want Obviously using the vanilla sort of setup where it's very lightweight editor is one perfectly valid way to use it, but if you also want to do something like, say, I don't know, turn it into Emacs, or you want to
Starting point is 01:06:50 turn it into VS Code, or you want to do all these other things, there's no reason why you shouldn't do that. For example, I think the week this goes out, I'm going to be recording a video on an application called GoNeoVim which is a... Go... Did I spell it wrong? I spelled it G-O-NeoVim. I can't click on the screen for some reason. G... No, I want... I meant Go... DuckDuck duck go stop it. There we go. Go near of him It is a fork of a another application called go end VIM, which is not being maintained anymore, but this It's an interesting application to say the least I don't think that it adds anything super
Starting point is 01:07:43 Super duper useful, but there are some cool features that it does have. For example, like workspaces and a built-in fuzzy finder. Plus, it's got this like VS Code-esque drop-down thing. It's got like markdown previews, a mini-map, things like that. It does certainly look really, really cool also has leakage support which a lot of terminals don't have so on my quest to turn Vim into Emacs obviously I'm gonna have to try out some GUI clients and Maybe I'll find one that I really like right now. I haven't really found any that sort of like I Guess that sort of stand out to me most of them are sort of just here's a GUI client
Starting point is 01:08:27 it doesn't really do anything else besides just be NeoVim now this one on the other hand having the uh the mini map there is actually a nice addition and having like the markdown preview is also really really helpful when I'm trying to do things uh just you know writing markdown documents with Pandoc those actually are really cool features. But most of them, I've seen things like GTK Vim or GTK Neo Vim. Those are just, here is Vim, it's in a GUI window. And I'm just like, okay, but what does it do?
Starting point is 01:09:00 Can I display images? Can I do anything else? Is it just NeoVim, but in a GUI window? And if that's the case, I don't really see what the point of that actually is. And I also want to talk about this one right here. Now, apparently it's been archived, which is sad. I might not end up talking about it now. I don't know. been archived, which is sad, I might not end up talking about it now, I don't know, yeah, I actually do think this one actually is really cool, sadly though, yeah, I didn't actually notice the fact that it had been archived, this one actually does add some cool features though, and it looks like it's trying to be, you know, a proper sort of editor, or a proper sort of code editor, I guess,
Starting point is 01:09:46 proper sort of editor, or proper sort of code editor I guess, rather than just being here is NeoVim but in a graphical window, plus you get a Nyan Cat because it's 2006, and there are other sort of Vim projects that are cool, like GNVim is sort of one of those just very basic ones, one of those just very basic ones. This is one of the ones where I don't really see the point of it. It is cool but I don't really see any point because it's just like okay here is just regular Envim but it's in a GUI for some reason. I don't really know what the justification really is there. Like yeah, you get ligatures and Not much else really like the reason why you want to run Emacs in a GUI Is because you can like load up Firefox inside of it and actually run graphical applications inside of Emacs or you can like display images but none of these GUI Vim clients are really trying to do that all of them are just okay here is
Starting point is 01:10:52 just Vim and a GUI what I would like to see is let's say you have a path to an image if you have a path to an image then it actually displays that image in like a preview window that actually would be really really useful especially when you're trying to do things like web development, so you have like a an image tag there and you have a link to an image Actually display that image that would be such an awesome feature to have but none of them really do that So I will look at some of these but I don't think that in the end I will end up actually using them if I do use one I'll probably have to write it myself just so I can actually add some of these basic features
Starting point is 01:11:29 that if you're going to have a GUI client probably should be there. But I don't know. There is this... Even though... Okay, if someone does happen to use one of these GUI Vim clients or GUI NVim clients can you actually let me know why you actually do it because I still haven't found a reasonable justification to actually do so
Starting point is 01:11:54 That would be cool even though like obviously the ligature support is nice So I guess if you have a terminal that doesn't support ligatures That's probably like the one reason to do so, or if you desperately need proper mouse support, I guess that's also a thing you can do, but outside of those, outside of those, I don't really see any reason why you might, oh, I'm still getting a shadow on my face, am I, okay, that's cool, uh, only when I lean in this far, I did manage to fix that problem from a few weeks back, right now, the, actually, I might, shh, okay, I mentioned this in the sound check, but yeah, this, uh, this mic arm is sort of broken
Starting point is 01:12:40 now, uh, I don't know why, but it's sort of broken so if I bump it it you know falls over very easily so I've got my light slightly off if you can't you don't probably know where it was before but it's slightly off to the right from where it was before so it should light my face better now now I might end up putting a light in front of me because that's probably gonna be the the best way to fully deal with it because obviously when I leave it here I'm still gonna get, you know, the shadow on my face but if I have a point light on my face, yeah, I think that might be the best way
Starting point is 01:13:21 to deal with it. I don't know where I'd mount it though. I guess I could probably mount it on top of my TV. And then have it pointing down like that. That could work. I think what I'll have to do is... Put a light there. See if it does anything reasonable. And then if it does, then decide whether I want to put it there.
Starting point is 01:13:47 Rather than going and buying it and then not using it. But I also do want to have a third light anyway, just in case I do need a third light. Because it would be useful if I try to, say... I don't know, I want to go to Avcon and actually interview some of the game developers there and just have an extra light where I don't have to, like, tear down my existing setup would make that slightly
Starting point is 01:14:06 slightly more useful, I guess so That's an option for sure. But Yeah, I Still said just don't really want to pay $60 for another light But I do have the batteries this time which is an improvement last last time the reason why I was expensive was because I had to buy the batteries, but I have a
Starting point is 01:14:28 Extra battery sitting down here and I can always obviously run it on DC as well because I found out what DC adapter they use they use the same one that my My portable hard drive has so I just buy some of those and I can wire the one on the right I guess it's your left. I can wire that one up as well. And then not have to worry about using the battery. And then just use the battery for the one that's going to be up here. But I feel like if I put a light up there, it's also going to be a problem.
Starting point is 01:14:55 There's going to be more shadows when I do things like this. Oh, no, maybe not. Maybe it'd be less of a shadow. I don't know. I would also have to mess with the actual lighting intensity, because if I have a third light obviously there's gonna be more light in general. So these ones off to the side are probably gonna have to be toned down a bit, and it's not a big deal. I'll just have to mess with them a bit, then I'll probably also have to mess with my existing
Starting point is 01:15:22 webcam settings, because they're configured for having these two point lights and this light off to the back here This light off to the back I feel like there's a better way for a better place for it to be put Just because it's not properly lighting up the back as you can probably notice. It's like real shadowy off to this side But if I don't have the light there, it looks really bad. Actually, no, I'm going to go turn the light off, and you'll see what I mean. So that's sort of what happens when I don't have that backlight on. So obviously I need to have some sort of light there but if I
Starting point is 01:16:08 I've tried placing it like behind this chair and it just doesn't work it sort of just blasts the wall and looks kind of terrible. I'll place it there and just show you what it looks like. It's not the worst thing I guess I could the other option is I could also... I could also just get a less bright bowl, actually. You know what? It's not as bad as I remember, to be honest. If I put it directly behind my chair...
Starting point is 01:16:43 Also, there's a problem where it might fall over. Oh, okay. I remembered it being worse. Maybe it would actually be okay there. Oh, god. That's falling over. Yeah, this is the big problem having it here. There we go. Okay. Now, my face is a bit too bright on this side So let's go turn this down And see if we can get this to the point where it's It's workable That's not, okay
Starting point is 01:17:15 It's not as bad as I had remembered Maybe it'd be fine like that I don't know I might mess around with it. See if it's okay. But also, I'm noticing my face is really... It's weirdly exposed right now. Because there's too much light.
Starting point is 01:17:36 I think there's too much light on that wall. I think there's also light coming down on my face as well. So it doesn't really know what to do with it. Yeah, I think the problem is how bright that bulb actually is. So I think I need to get something dimmer. And it might be fine then. Maybe I'll try that. Uh, because... Yeah, when you're when you're lighting up a scene, you don't want to have too much light on the background,
Starting point is 01:18:05 because then the subject will look too dim, regardless of how much light you actually put onto the subject, the subject will look too dim, this is the lighting theory knowledge of someone who has no idea about lighting, so yeah, just take my word with a massive grain of salt, but I think that Yeah, that that doesn't like there's something about that that just doesn't look right And I think it's just the fact there's too much light even though the lighting on my face really hasn't changed that much it's just this because of the fact that there's so much light there, there's sort of a Your eyes sort of trick you into thinking the subject is less lit than they actually are. So even if I was to turn this way up there...
Starting point is 01:18:53 Or maybe if I bring my lighting up quite a bit it will be fine. I put that at like 35. I put that at like 35. Like it's workable at that point, but then like my face also starts to look really shiny, which is also a problem, especially with going into summer because I'm obviously going to be like sweaty when I try to record a video most of the time. So yeah, you don't want to have too much light
Starting point is 01:19:24 because you get this weird unnatural look. That can be mitigated by using or by softening the light. But it's still going to be a little bit of an issue. I really don't like how bright that background is. Yeah, I would have to get a less bright bulb to make this actually work in a way that doesn't look terrible. And then the light falls over. That's the biggest problem though.
Starting point is 01:19:55 Just making sure the light doesn't fall over. I guess that could be dealt with by just putting something that holds it down there. Um... Yeah. Hmm. Obviously, I do want to have the background lit up properly, but this is too much light. I'm going to put it back to where it should be and we'll see how much better it does look on my face.
Starting point is 01:20:33 And, and as you can probably tell, now it looks considerably better. So, having a dimmer bulb, if I put a dimmer bulb in that, and then I put it back behind me it should
Starting point is 01:20:49 be okay. Now I'm I'm putting a very big emphasis on the should part there because I have no idea but bulbs aren't that expensive anyway So I can try it out without too much worry, I guess I'll turn this back down Yeah worry I guess. I'll turn this back down. Yeah. Yeah okay that that's looking a little bit better. I think my camera's too high as well but whatever. It's probably been too high the entire recording. That was probably good for the audio people. Once again, I apologize to the audio people for doing things that are not audio-y, but you chose to listen to that version, so hey. Sort of on you at that point.
Starting point is 01:21:36 So yeah, I did mention the fact that it's going into... I guess it's going into... It is spring right now. Let's find out what the temperature is right now. Weather. it is spring right now, um, let's find out what the temperature is right now, weather, it is currently 24 degrees Celsius, and apparently supposed to rain today, which I don't believe, um, and I made the mistake of putting track pants on before I recorded this, so I'm, uh, yeah, I'm getting real hot right now, and I'll probably switch out to shorts after I finish this, Yeah, I'm getting real hot right now, and I'll probably switch out to shorts after I finish this
Starting point is 01:22:08 Yeah, I I don't have to say anything about the weather. It's it's uh it's getting into summer, so you know or getting the spring So we're back to the time where my face gets to be real shiny the entire time which I said I was going to deal with last time by softening the light, and then I just never did, so I probably need to actually do that, uh, the easiest way to do it is get some sort of cloth, put it over the light, or you can get the super ghetto solution, which is get a tissue, which is not a great solution, because it's sort of a fire hazard. But I do have some cloth in there that I could use. And what I could do is potentially make up some ghetto light boxes.
Starting point is 01:22:55 So I can brighten the light. So I don't lose as much light from the dampening or the softening. And then soften the light as it comes through. Basically all you need to do is get like a Light shade sort of shape Line with tin foil and then put the fabric over the end and then you're pretty much good to go so pretty much what I do is grab one of these guys and Do that onto there so like create a shape of some sort
Starting point is 01:23:27 buy a light shade I guess and yeah put the thing over and Yeah, I bought the cloth like a year ago and just never got around to using it It's one of those it's one of the many projects where I'm just like here's this cool thing I want to do and then I just don't do it And then it I realized oh, I'm back at uni now. And I don't have time to do it. But luckily, that problem is going to be not a problem soon. Because what are we in? We are in week seven now.
Starting point is 01:23:57 And I think we're going to week eight. And then we have the uni break. And then after the break, there's like five more weeks, so I think we've got like eight weeks left, which is pretty, pretty crazy to think about, because I still remember the fact, I still remember the fact, I still remember when I was in my first year, as if it was yesterday, it doesn't feel like I've really been at university for four years at this point, and especially now that I'm sort of thinking about not really using the degree that much, yeah, my last four years have been interesting,
Starting point is 01:24:39 I've certainly met some awesome people, and I've, you've seen some of them come onto the podcast, but I don't think I would be doing what I'm doing right now, if I didn, you've seen some of them come onto the podcast, but I don't think I would be doing what I'm doing right now if I didn't end up going to university, because I think my, my plan otherwise would have been, if I remember correctly, I was thinking of doing a trade, and I have no idea how I would have done a trade, because I don't know how, the first thing about actually getting into that, I'm sure I could, I would have worked that if I actually put my mind to doing it, but I think I would have ended up doing like electrician work, because I've always had some interest in like electronics and computers, um, and coming from a generally poor area the idea I was thinking about was an electrician just
Starting point is 01:25:28 because that sort of made sense from where I was at and then I realized I could go study computer science at university and I already had an interest in programming from high school which I had talked about in the past before and from there I was just like okay well I'm gonna go do that now after I finished high school I did take that gap year and you know almost thought about not going to university after that because I fucking hated school at that point but I am I'm happy I did it because if I didn't I wouldn't have discovered this because especially if I was working full-time There's no way I would have had the time to actually start up something like this
Starting point is 01:26:09 I know some people still manage to do it and those people are mental cases, but also the fact the university sort of given me the ability to I Guess manage my time better now. I still waste a lot of time, especially when it comes to watching hololive clips, but my time management is so much better than it used to be, and also how I actually value my time has very much changed over the past couple of years as well. So, for example, back when I was leaving high school, I would play a lot of video games, I would watch a lot of anime. I still want to go back to the anime, but I have time right now. And sort of that was my main focus, and then school came second. And that sort of continued into university as well. I think my first two or so years, I was actually watching like 30 or 40 anime series a season
Starting point is 01:27:10 while doing uni stuff while getting top grades, which I looking back, I don't know why the fuck I did that or how the fuck I did that because There was like it's it's not like first year or second year is really that much work But it's still a big jump from when you're in high school and somehow I managed to balance all of that I think I've said this before I think it's just because I didn't really have a big social life sort of I sort of had the social life that you need to sort of function at university and then outside of that I generally there's the next year one I generally just ignore it um so I would always just be at home, basically, nine plus hours a day working on uni assignments, which is not a good combination,
Starting point is 01:27:53 not, just not a good idea in general, so now, with the, um, with the channel, the channel has sort of taken up a lot of that, you know, a lot of that, um, that anime time. It hasn't taken up all of it. It's not like I spend fucking whatever 40 series a week worth of time is making videos. I do definitely eat into a big portion of that, but I don't think it's as much time. So I still have more free time, but I also will hang out with people. If someone sends me a me a message like hey you want to go do something i'll say yeah i'll actually go do that whereas before i'd be like no i need to i need to be at home doing this or also i'm working a bit more at my day job or as a night job um just so i can you know put money away from it for investing and that's not something i would have done a couple of years ago either not something I would have done a couple
Starting point is 01:28:45 of years ago either I sort of would have done the bare minimum I need to do to survive and then not really care about anything from that point but now I'm sort of thinking about it in a more a more long-term approach I guess whereas oh where I can say, even though I don't necessarily need this extra $50 right now, if I put $50 away now, in a couple of years, that $50 will be worth considerably more money. And that's sort of the way I'm approaching it. Or not just that $50 will be worth more money, it helps it so the rest of my portfolio can build up in value just that little bit quicker. Which I think is a healthy approach to have, as long as you also maintain that good balance, where you're not
Starting point is 01:29:32 trying to be like, okay, well, I need to work every extra hour I can right now, and so I can like, build up that portfolio, obviously, if you want to do that, that's cool, but I think there's some value in also just enjoying your life, I don't save every possible cent I could, but I also want to do that, that's cool. But I think there's some value in also just enjoying your life. I don't save every possible cent I could. But I also want to, you know, buy light novels. I want to go out for lunch sometimes. I want to do these other things. So generally, I do save most of what I put away. But I don't save every last cent.
Starting point is 01:30:02 If you want to go listen to someone who does, go watch Scott Cunningham's channel. He actually, I guess, Scott Cunningham or Scott C Business, you'll find him with. He's been on the podcast before. He basically lives as minimal as he possibly can. Still somehow manages to have like this crazy setup though. So I don't know how minimal he's actually living.
Starting point is 01:30:22 I'll just take his word for it though. how minimal he's actually living. I'll just take his word for it though. But he tries to basically save like 65% of his income, which obviously helps build up your portfolio incredibly quickly. I'm saving less. I'm still saving quite a bit. I don't have an exact percentage, but it's a couple hundred dollars every week. plus generally I'm saving most of what I make from the channel as well, that's sort of why I haven't bought a camera at this point, like I can afford to upgrade my camera to like a entry-level mirrorless, but I don't think that, at least for the longest time, I've thought that my content didn't really justify the more expensive gear, I wanted to get to the point where I can actually present content well enough where I'm like,
Starting point is 01:31:08 okay, at this point now the microphone I have and now the camera I have are sort of holding me back. Whereas if I was to go out of my way and then buy the camera and then buy the audio upgrade straight away, yeah, it would make my content look and sound better. But if I still can't present a video well It doesn't really That's another yawn. It doesn't really make any extra sense to You know go and buy that more expensive stuff because there are people who do that They'll start their channel straight away go and buy a mirrorless and then some of those people don't even continue making content. I
Starting point is 01:31:44 Especially wanted to make sure that I didn't fall into that situation where i'm not buying stuff that i know that i may not end up needing i'm not buying stuff that i made that that was too many negatives i don't want to buy things and then say okay in a couple of months i won't actually need this especially when it's an expensive purchase like a mirrorless camera, because even things like the, because the pretty common one that people get is the A5, what is it, Sony, what is the camera, Sony A6100, is that it, I think it is, yeah, here we go, Sony A6100, this is described as the, uh, a 6100. This is described as the budget camera. Now, it's $1,200, so obviously it's an expensive purchase, and I can afford it. It's yeah, I, I can't really justify it at this point, now, someone might say, but my content actually is good, but I feel like from a, I guess from a,
Starting point is 01:33:03 the way that I personally look at it, I feel like up until very recently I couldn't have justified it. It's gotten to the point now where I'm thinking, okay if I was to actually run across my channel, yeah I would subscribe to my channel, but I still think that's probably not good enough. I still want to get to the point where... I don't know what point I'm trying to get to. I think I'm just trying to get to the point where, I don't know, I don't know what point I'm trying to get to, I think I'm just trying to get to the point where I feel happy with what I'm making, and then I'll be like, okay, I think now is the time to get this audio upgrade, and now is the time to get this hard, or this, uh, this video upgrade, I know there are
Starting point is 01:33:40 cheaper cameras I can get than this, but yeah, this is the one I was thinking of getting or there's a Canon one that people recommend as well I think a Canon might be cheaper but either way it's very expensive especially in Australian dollars because our currency is garbage m50 is the Canon one that people recommend. How much is that from, you know, we'll use Ted's cameras again because Ted's cameras were what we used before. Shout out to Ted's cameras. I've never heard of your company before. Here we go. This is only a thousand dollars. And I would be using that to record my regular content and So it would be getting used a lot. It's not just like I'm gonna use it just for vlogs It would be replacing the webcam as like my my general thing
Starting point is 01:34:33 I might still use the webcam for our live streams just because on a live stream. It doesn't really matter that much Maybe I won't use it, but it's Yeah, oh no, especially when you're just doing gaming streams you're gonna have a little webcam in the corner like down down in this down here here we go down in this corner here and regard really regardless of what camera you have as long as it's not something from like the 70s it's gonna look perfectly fine at that size, but for the regular content where I'm just doing like the, you know, the regular sort of stuff I do, those ones, yeah, it would be doing it,
Starting point is 01:35:11 and I feel like it would be a big upgrade, you can go see how good the M50 actually looks, let's see if we can find a video of it, um, uh, Canon M50 video. Uh, do-do-do-do-do. Here we go. Like, this- this camera looks really fucking good. Now, obviously, people who are, like, super into cameras are probably gonna be like there's there's like cameras that look way better than this but when you're coming from using a Just using a webcam basically anything gonna be a big upgrade now. It's not a very good shot But yeah, you can see how good this camera actually looks So how does how good a proper camera actually looks relative to what I'm using right now How just how good a proper camera actually looks relative to what I'm using right now
Starting point is 01:36:13 So it's at some point that will be a purchase I make but for now You know, I'm I'm sort. I'm sort of good with where I'm at. Did I get a okay? I thought I got a message for a second. What okay? We're gonna read this comment I just got right now because that that makes good content I pay a lot of tax any opportunity to get money back via either gov grant or job keeper I take it I don't have no I have no idea what that's supposed to be in reference to I think I commented on a video. Yeah. So. I think the last thing I wanted to talk about.
Starting point is 01:36:50 Was the. The Victoria lockdowns. Because fucking hell. Victoria is. Yeah. Victoria is pretty fucked right now. So. If you don't know.
Starting point is 01:37:06 Basically the only state in Australia. That's still, like, super hard on lockdowns is Victoria, because they have no idea how to manage what they're doing, um, lockdown, or, actually, we've got Victoria Restrictions, I did see an article that did list them out fairly well, yeah, that should work the department of health nonsense and nonsense okay actually no i think that article i saw uh where's the article i saw didn't find it because it showed what the previous restrictions were relative to the new ones so that should be useful. It's, yeah, the one time I'll ever read The Guardian. Here we go, because The Guardian, I fucking like The Guardian, but when they are just reporting facts, then they are relatively okay. So, okay, basically, Victoria announced, or, yeah, Victoria, or Melbourne,
Starting point is 01:38:07 specifically, announced they're going to have, um, more restrictions, so, or, they, they announced their plan to move out of the restrictions by having more restrictions, anyway, the Melbourne step one, midnight 13th of September to the 28th of September, which will be as of tomorrow from the recording of this. This will be stage 4. There will be a curfew from 9pm to 5am, which was previously 8pm to 5am, because, I don't know, I guess the virus doesn't come out after 8pm or something. I don't get the point of this arbitrary curfew.
Starting point is 01:38:45 Especially when nothing's actually open after 9pm anyway. Just let people be outside. I don't care. This curfew doesn't make any sense. There is also an exercise limit of 2 hours a day within 5km of your home, up from 1 hour. So previously, you were only allowed to exercise for 1 hour, and that was all you were only allowed to exercise for one hour and that was
Starting point is 01:39:05 all you're allowed to actually exercise for. Now I don't know how they can really work out whether you've been exercising for more than an hour or not but I guess that's what the drones are for. So also reasons to leave the home. So exercise, health care, shopping for essential goods. No more than one person per household is allowed to shop once a day, so if you happen to live by yourself and then forget something you need to purchase, you are not allowed to go back out and actually buy it, because reasons, I guess maybe if you treat it as part of your exercise time and you run to the shops, maybe, is that okay? I don't know, these are really arbitrary restrictions. Permitted work. So, work the government lets you do.
Starting point is 01:39:48 And you must stay within five kilometers of your home. And intrastate travel is not allowed except for permitted purpose. Intrastate travel. What do you mean? Travel within the state? But you can travel five kilometers from your home. Literally any travel is intrastate travel. Am I forgetting what the word intra means? Give me one sec. I didn't want to sneeze on the camera. Um, I'll look into the microphone. Intrastate, am I, I feel like I'm a moron.
Starting point is 01:40:21 I feel like I'm a moron. Existing or occurring within a state. Literally any travel within a state is intrastate travel. What do you mean you can't do intrastate travel? Walking outside your house is intrastate travel. Whatever, that's dumb. These restrictions don't make any sense. Must stay within five kilometers of your home.
Starting point is 01:40:51 So if you have, say, a job that's six kilometers away, and your job is open, then you are not allowed to go to your work. Even though your work is open, because you can only travel within five kilometers of your home. Melbourne is dumb. Victoria's in the home. People living alone can have one person visit them in a social bubble. I don't know what that means. I don't know what social bubble is
Starting point is 01:41:11 supposed to mean. Does that mean your friends can visit you? I don't know. Previously, only intimate partners were allowed to visit. What if you had two partners? What if you're in like a polygamous relationship? How does that work? I don't know. I don't know if the Melbourne government has actually thought about that, or the Victorian government actually thought about that. Outdoor gatherings. Maximum of two people from different households or the members of one household for a maximum of two hours. All right. So, sure.
Starting point is 01:41:52 Okay, I guess that's sort of part of the exercise thing as well. I thought there was a weird confliction there, but I guess not. Wait. Wait, so you're allowed to have an outdoor gathering, but these are the reasons you're allowed to leave your house. So why- wait, can you have an outdoor gathering by yourself at any place then? These- yeah, no, these actually do conflict with each other and don't make any sense. I don't know if this is the Guardian doing weird reporting, or if this is just how confusing
Starting point is 01:42:23 the restrictions are. So as for schools, schools were remote learning except for- or are going to be remote learning Guardian doing weird reporting or if this is just how confusing the restrictions are. So as for schools, schools were remote learning except for or are going to be remote learning except for children of essential workers when there is no adult at home. Sure, okay that's fair. Most people are probably going to be you know doing remote learning anyway. Reopening playgrounds, weddings with a maximum of five people Anyway, reopening playgrounds, weddings with a maximum of five people, and only, wait, and allowed only for compassionate reasons. What does that mean?
Starting point is 01:42:56 Also, who's going to have a wedding during all of this when you can only have five people there? I guess the only people who would do that are the people who are going to have those, like, weddings without ceremonies anyway, because no one else is is gonna do a wedding with five people. Also why are weddings with five people allowed but outdoor gatherings are not? So if I just say that my outdoor gathering is a wedding can I have more than five people? What about if I say it's a funeral can I have more than or more than two people? These strictions are dumb. Anyway on to the next one so next one is from 13th September... Wait, what? Oh, this is regional Victoria. Sorry. We'll just do the Melbourne ones because regional Victoria are sort of okay.
Starting point is 01:43:36 So restriction level second step is a relaxed stage four plan. So the case threshold needs to be within 30 to 50 cases in metropolitan areas over the previous 14 days Which is not going to happen. So this is going to be delayed and I guarantee it will be delayed So the curfew is still 9 pm to 5 pm because as we know the virus does not come out after 9 pm Uh, you can still not uh, Outdoor exercise for no more than two hours limited to five kilometers from home Outdoor personal training allowed with up to two people. Okay, so I don't think anything changes here except that outdoor pools are now open because...
Starting point is 01:44:10 I don't know. I guess the virus doesn't survive in pools or something. Visitors in the home. People who live alone can have one guest. I don't think really much changes in this. Interstate travel not permitted because you're not allowed to travel five kilometers from your home but you're not allowed to travel in the state because, dumb. Reopening. Childcare for all families, outdoor pools, personal trainers for up to two people, a trainer,
Starting point is 01:44:35 outdoor religious gatherings of up to five people. Hmm wait wait wait wait wait what? Okay. So you can have... So in the previous stage you could have weddings with up to five people, but religious gatherings of five people plus one faith leader. So that was the same as the weddings of five people plus the person running the wedding. But now religious gatherings are allowed. Why are those different from weddings? See, this is why people get very confused. Because these restrictions make literally no sense.
Starting point is 01:45:17 So some workplaces will reopen. Construction, manufacturing, warehousing, and postal distribution open in restricted... I'm sorry, your postal service is closed during all this? Surely not. Sure... Bumped the microphone again. Surely they're keeping Auspost open inside of
Starting point is 01:45:39 Victoria. That would be a little ridiculous if they entirely shut down the postal system. That would be a little ridiculous if they entirely shut down the postal system. So, 26th of October to 23rd of November. Introduced if there are fewer than five cases a day statewide, of which no more than three are from unknown sources over the 14-day average. Now, because the previous stage will not be met, this stage will also not be met as well, and I guarantee it won't be met. Curfew is now lifted. Exercise limit lifted, no restrictions on leaving the house or when, outdoor
Starting point is 01:46:09 gathering up to 10 people, sure okay. Potential stage return for students in years 3 to 10 based on epidemiology. Why can the 11s and 12s not go to school? What? Wait, what? What's the difference between a grade 10 and a grade 11? What? What? Why is there a problem with grade 2 and lower? Okay. Reopening. Retail and hairdressing. I'm sure your retail... Sure, whatever.
Starting point is 01:46:50 I guess some of the retail places are closed. Hospitality for outdoor seated service with group booking limits of 10 and density limits. Stage return of outdoor non-contact sports for adults. So that's like basketball, netball, things like that. Return of outdoor sports-contact sports for adults. So that's like basketball Netball things like that return of outdoor sports for under 18s construction manufacturing warehousing postal distribution
Starting point is 01:47:14 Center these opened in the previous stage. What? But no those are open to the previous stage construction manufacturing warehousing postal distribution open in restricted settings. I guess now they have to... I guess restricted settings means different from a COVID safe plan. Why do you not have the COVID... whatever. Whatever. Real estate open with restrictions, yet gotta gotta save the housing bubble in Melbourne. Supermarket and food distribution services and offices open in... Wait, I'm sorry. Are your supermarkets closed in Victoria? Surely not.
Starting point is 01:47:57 Surely the supermarkets are not closed in Victoria. That would be a little insane. Offices and professional services open in a restricted way, repairs, maintenance and clearing open with a COVID safe plan, vets open for non-urgent care, wait, for non-urgent care, why are they open for non-urgent care, why not open for urgent care, or were they already open for urgent care, I guess it wasn't mentioned in previous ones, but they might already be open for urgent care. That makes sense then.
Starting point is 01:48:29 Community facilities such as libraries, open patrons with restrictions. And then 23 of November to no active cases, which is going to be amusing because these restrictions are going to basically exist forever. Introduce if there are no new cases in the previous 14 days after the 23rd of November. Once again, this is literally not going to happen in Melbourne. It can happen in South Australia because our state is much more spread out.
Starting point is 01:48:58 Victoria is not going to happen though. It's probably going to happen maybe in January at the absolute minimum. So even if there are no new cases there are still restrictions so up to 20 visitors at a time, up to 50 people outdoors, all students still on term back to school. Yeah that's gonna not happen until next year. And all retail open, hospitality increased to 20, people for seated service, cap of 50 patrons in total, indoor entertainment, cinemas, music
Starting point is 01:49:27 venues, theaters no longer closed but restricted by patron caps, nightclub and karaoke as well as gaming casinos no longer closed but heavily restricted, uh, wait, I wonder if it's going to mention, it's going to, I wonder, uh, no, it doesn't. Okay. There's a very good reason I started searching for brothels. It's because in Victoria, prostitution is legal. So, yeah, they actually have brothels in Victoria, which always amuses me when I remember that's a thing.
Starting point is 01:49:59 But, yeah, where is this? Okay, this is the one we're reading. So, regional Victoria. And then after that, we have a statewide step five COVID normal. There's not going to be a, here's just back to normal. No, now it's COVID normal. Most restrictions dropped to safety conditions. No new cases, 28 days.
Starting point is 01:50:23 Phased return to ons-site work for people working from home. So most restrictions dropped. If you've hit normal, I feel like this is the point where you are, you know, have zero restrictions, but that's also not going to happen, you know, when they think it's going to happen. They think it's going to happen in November. I am very, very doubtful that that happens in Melbourne. Now, in Adelaide, on the other hand, we have basically eliminated the virus here. So, we do occasionally get new cases. But every single case that we have had has been from bringing someone from a different
Starting point is 01:51:06 state into this state. And you know, very unsurprising that that's actually introducing new cases. So right now we have total cases 466, recovered 462, and then four deaths accounts for the rest of the number there. So we currently have zero active cases and The last case we had has been from bringing in someone from Victoria and then there was someone showing at COVID symptoms in the Adelaide Women's prison Now how they would have caught COVID I I don't possibly know because they were in a prison and there are no active cases in the state so I feel like they actually don't have it. And we think that everything is going to be COVID at this point.
Starting point is 01:51:53 Yeah, so we have hit the point where we sort of just are waiting. Until the government, you know, reduces the restrictions. But it seems like most people at this point in South Australia don't give a fuck. Because I was at a shopping center earlier today and they had like a little cafe there. Now, normally cafes are supposed to have like a 1.5 meter distance and they're not supposed to be using all their chairs. But this cafe't give a f**k they had their big line everyone was like crunched up together they had all their seating out and people were fine and i think that's probably what's going to happen now do i think that's a good idea for melbourne to be doing f**k no especially if they want to hit their insane
Starting point is 01:52:38 targets that are not going to happen no i don't think that melbourne should be opening but in No, I don't think that Melbourne should be opening. But in South Australia, where we have zero active cases, I don't see a reason why we should be continuing the lockdown. And I do hope that it opens up soon. I don't think our Premier has actually, you know, announced anything. Let's see if we can find anything. Mr. Stephen Marshall, have you made any announcement? Announcement? Since... no, you've said nothing since August. Okay, so we're just sort of, you know,
Starting point is 01:53:17 waiting now until we go back into normal. Now, I'm not entirely bothered by the border lockdowns, especially while Melbourne is still as fucked as it is. I'm entirely happy to keep the border shut to that state, but I don't think there's any reason to keep it shut to, like, Northern Territory. Like, they're doing even better than we are. So, let's see. Northern Territory restrictions. Uh, borders. uh, COVID, let's just find COVID, I don't even know if the border is shut, because 33 cases, 33 recovered, zero dead, like, they did it fucking exceptionally, uh, anti-borders open to all in New South Wales, I don't think the border is open to South Australia yet, um, but it could be, and I might be slightly mistaken about that, so, yeah, actually, let's check, uh, border South Australia,
Starting point is 01:54:20 once again, could be very wrong about that. Interstate travels. There's... No, it seems like right now there is still the quarantines. South Australia opens its borders to visitors from WA, Tasmania and... NT. Okay, maybe I was wrong. Maybe that actually did open up a while back. Okay, cool. But I know that, um, Schoolies in Victoria got cancelled this year. If you don't know what Schoolies is, Schoolies is basically um I think of it like spring break in the US. But compress
Starting point is 01:55:12 it into like a couple of weeks and add lots more drugs. And that would be Schoolies. And I know this ended up getting cancelled because obvious reasons. Will Schoolies still go ahead in 2020? No, no it is not. At least at this stage I don't know what's really gonna go ahead. Oh no, they're gonna have a COVID safe schoolies event. Yeah, no that's not happening. That is a...
Starting point is 01:55:38 Oh no, so South Australia is going to do that. Yeah. South Australia, the state that has no cases, is going to have a COVID-safe schoolies. People are not going to pay attention to your stupid rules. Everyone is fucking hopped up on PCP and is really drunk. They're not going to pay attention to your stupid rules. They are not
Starting point is 01:56:02 going to. No matter what you do, it's not happening. You're going to have to arrest everyone at schoolies for that to happen because it's schoolies but I know there was an announcement that the South Australian Christmas pageant is going to be moved because even though
Starting point is 01:56:22 we're going to be in December at that point we're still somehow having restrictions like that. See, I'm just generally annoyed at this point. That's sort of how I'm feeling at this point. I think everyone's sort of in that situation. Christmas. Christmas pageant. Yeah, I'm sort of just generally annoyed. And I feel like most people are probably in that situation. Especially if you're in these places where you have hit zero cases
Starting point is 01:56:57 and have been on zero cases for a considerable amount of time. It's just like, why are we still in this lockdown phase? Why... yeah. Especially in... when we hit December, that's still another two months away. There is no reason, there is a absolutely no reason why this needs to be moved, why it can't just go ahead the way it normally did. I don't want to start letting in swaths of people from Victoria. There's not gonna be any issue whatsoever with this. Now I don't particularly care too much about the Christmas pageant, but this is sort of just some semblance of normalcy that I kind of want to
Starting point is 01:57:46 get back to, but at least, at least we're down to zero cases in South Australia, that's what I can say, at least, at least no, even though we still have these restrictions in some ways, not as bad as Victoria, even though the restrictions still exist, at least no one else is dying from it at this point. That's what I can say. And at least the... at least we don't have a crazy, crazy Premier who's trying to basically initiate his authoritarian state like Mr. Daniel Andrews is trying to do. Yeah. I don't have too much else to say about that, but there's one last thing I did want to talk about. So, over on YouTube, there's been a new type of
Starting point is 01:58:43 YouTube channel that has been popping up. So, on a lot of my videos, you might have noticed comments from channels look a little bit like this. Now, I'm not going to show you the channel this is actually on, because I realize it's probably a little bit too much to show on YouTube. There's a lot of channels like this that keep commenting on my videos, and not just my videos, on a lot of other people's videos as well. So, I'll see if I can find them. Let's go over to my channel page. Let's go to my comments. Uh, see if we can find under my spam section. Yep, there's a lot of them in here. Okay. So they'll say things like awesome and then put like a bunch of emojis or so nice and a bunch of emojis. Obviously, uh, these are just bots and these aren't even random emojis. These are just pre-programmed messages.
Starting point is 01:59:26 And I've been seeing these pop up for so long now. This is another one of those YouTube spam bots that I don't really understand the purpose of. This one I got. These ones where they were posting links to a website was entirely reasonable as a scam, because there's probably like a keylogger on it, or there's like ads on it or something. There's probably some way they can make money. But these ones are very much like the Tim, Tem and Tom ones, where it was just like, hey, cool video. Tim and Tom ones where it was just like, hey cool video.
Starting point is 02:00:12 But there's nothing here that they can really get from it. So like with that spam bot, I don't know what really is What really is coming out of this. Let's see if we can find more of them. I'm not seeing any on here. I think most of those ones got put in my spam. But trust me, there have been more of them. And if someone has worked out why these spam bots actually exist, feel free to let me know because I'd be very interested in finding that out because obviously I can keep deleting these, I can keep reporting them, I keep doing things like that, but I still want to know... I don't really care who's running them, that doesn't really bother me. I want to know what anyone is actually getting out of these spam bots unless they're just enjoying
Starting point is 02:01:06 making youtube worse or something is unless that's all they're getting from it but i feel like there has to be some sort of monetary monetary gain they get from this now the way they're accessing the channels on the other hand i feel like they're probably hijacking channels like have happened in the past before but that's a different side of like they're probably hijacking channels like have happened in the past before. But that's a different side of it. They could be hijacking channels and then never posting comments with them. And that would sort of be the same effect. Because you could always just post, here are like Bitcoin scams or something like that. You could always post those and then not have to spam other channels.
Starting point is 02:01:44 But, or spam other channels but... or spam other channels with no way to make money from it. That's the biggest thing. These spam bots don't make any sense because there's nothing in the content that says I'm making money through this method. I don't know. Yeah, I don't know. But it was the same with TimTam and Tom as well. And there have been... I guess I want to differentiate between the spam bots and the scam bots. The scam bots are the ones that are posting links somewhere
Starting point is 02:02:22 that are going to have some sort of ads or keyloggers on them. The spam bots are just the Tim, Tim and Tom. And the big tit Asian girls who are bot accounts. Like those. There is. I want to make that distinction. Because I understand the scam bots. I completely understand them.
Starting point is 02:02:40 I think you're obviously ruining the platform. But I understand what you're getting out of it. So, I have no idea. Someone knows. I know there are people who spend way too much time looking into this stuff and sort of make a living out of these spam bots existing and then just making videos on them, but that's not the sort of thing that really catches my interest. I sort of just want the TLDR version so I can know really what's happening on the platform Yeah, we are just past two hours now and I've eliminated all of my topics so I have other tops I could do if I want to but I think I will end it there so um as for a channel I want to mention today
Starting point is 02:03:41 if you want to go find out about some politics going on around anime nonsense, I recommend checking out a channel called Hirohei. Really good channel, 190,000 subscribers. He did a video 11 hours ago where someone put Eofy's face on a bunch of panels in a lot of, in some words, panel, TV panels in a lot of electronic stores, that's the word I'm thinking of, and he does a bunch of other, you know, anime politics nonsense, all the time he's been talking about Uzaki-chan, but he's also been talking about Hololive and other things, Funimation being garbage, and things of that nature. So if you care about anime, or you care about the politics around anime, for some reason you care about those, which you
Starting point is 02:04:34 probably shouldn't, then come check this channel out. It's a really good channel. There are other channels that do similar sorts of content, but I feel like Hirohei is one of the better channels right now. I feel like some of the other ones aren't really making the best content. I'm not gonna name any names, but you can probably work out some of the ones that I'm talking about. So... Yeah, I think that's pretty much everything for me. But before I go, I would like to thank my supporters,
Starting point is 02:05:07 wherever you can find the list, so, a special thank, oh, god, there we go, so, a special thank you to Joachim, Kolbinion, Andrew, Craig, Nathan, Montazer, Joseph, Pidity, Rode, Tony, Donald, oh, sorry, Tony, Brennan, Donald, John, Marek, Mikkel, Nephite, Tease, and Zilva, I forgot there was a new name on that list, so, yeah, if you want to go, I work, there'll be some links down below to my Patreon, also my subscribe site, and all that stuff, this podcast, I'm sorry, was kind of a train wreck, I was tired towards the start, and I, I don't know, I was sort of in the, uh, in the best flow to record a podcast. So if you managed to make it this far, I sincerely appreciate it.
Starting point is 02:05:50 I've also got my main channel. That is Brodie Robertson, available on Library and YouTube. And also available on BitTube, BitChute, and Library. If you don't want to watch it on the YouTube. I've also got this podcast available on library and YouTube if you want to watch the video version or the audio version is available basically any way you can listen to audio podcasts. So I think that's pretty much anything for me but before I go we will play the outro
Starting point is 02:06:20 wherever my music player is. Here we go. There we go. Thank you guys for listening. It has been a train record podcast. But sometimes they happen. And sometimes I feel like starting again, but other times I don't. This one was one of the times I didn't feel like starting again. So, I think that's, that's going to be everything, and I'm out.
