Starting point is 00:00:00 Good morning, good day, and good evening. I'm as well as your host, Rudy Robertson, and today, well, unlike last time, I am not going to scare you guys off. I'm not going to have a, what, 30-minute discussion of an existential crisis before I get into anything even remotely tech-related. Now, I'm not going to say that won't happen in the episode, but we'll save it at least for past the end. Anyway, welcome back, welcome back. I think where we'll start today is, honestly, I feel so bad for the AUR maintainers. Like the Arch Team, it must suck right now to be in the arch team. So for anyone who like completely missed the memo, there was the AUR malware situation from about a month back,
Starting point is 00:00:56 and then there was another AUR situation. a UR situation from a couple of days back. This time was not as bad, most because they were far more prepared for it happening. I made a video on this one, that being this one here. It happened again. And it's going to happen again and again and again. And like I said in my previous video, I called it. I knew it was going to happen.
Starting point is 00:01:27 They didn't fix anything. And because they didn't fix anything, the exact same attack vector was used in the exact same way. Wow, who would have ever guessed that if you don't fix the problem and there is a known problem with your system? Immediately upon reopening the system, it's going to be hit in the exact same way. who would have even remotely guessed that was going to happen. Now there are some people that don't even know what is going on.
Starting point is 00:02:06 There's some people who don't even realize that they have actually entirely locked down any pushes, right? So right now they're not just locked down account signups. They've just gone all out saying, nope, nothing. No new accounts, no new pushes, no new packages, absolutely nothing. We are just putting it entirely on read-only mode.
Starting point is 00:02:32 If there is a package you want to download, you can download that package, but no updates, nothing. We right now have no idea how long this is actually going to be for. My hope is that when they do decide to reopen things, they actually decide to go and fix the problem, right? Because I'm telling you this now. If any AURP people are watching this, many arch people watching this, if the AUR is open again, within a day, within a couple of days,
Starting point is 00:03:02 within a week, the exact same thing is going to happen again. It's not just a matter of, oh, you've got to do email verification and, oh, stop people on disposable email address and things like that. Like, these are nice things to have, but they are not going to fix the problem. The problem is with the way that package adoptions are done. The fact that you can just go and adopt a package on any account, there's no verifference, for this, like, that just cannot be allowed to happen if you want the AUR to be in a at all moderated state. Now, if the goal is to treat the AUR like, where's the post that I saw
Starting point is 00:03:43 someone send? Actually, no, I posted it on the, on the Discord. This post here, if the goal is to just treat the AUR as this sort of dumping ground for package builds, Hey, be my guess. Like, go right ahead. That is a totally fine thing to do. So this blog post here is talking basically about how people are kind of missing the point of the AUR. The point of the AUR is it's supposed to be this place to find package builds.
Starting point is 00:04:11 You're supposed to review things and all this good stuff. And that's great. I think everybody should review package builds. Like, yeah, absolutely. The fact that a lot of people just install things entirely blindly, never really considering what it is they are downloading. that's a bad thing, right? Like, you should be going and checking what you're installing.
Starting point is 00:04:30 At the same time, you then have to decide what it is the AUR is going to be. Because if you're going to treat it with this entirely hands-off approach, you then have to make it crystal clear that this is going to be a dumping ground for malware. Like, you have to put, like, giant warning, like, not even just, oh, make sure you're of package, it was like, we are openly hosting malware, right? And I don't think the arch team wants to put themselves in that situation because then that puts themselves into a bit of a legal liability when something really bad happens. I would like the AUR to continue functioning the way it always has. That would be nice, right? It would be nice to see it keep happening.
Starting point is 00:05:19 But I just don't think that is really possible anymore. I think Arch is at a point now where it is too popular. And when something comes too popular and you have like a giant gaping hole in your security, like at some point you have to just say, we had our fun, right? We had our good times. And I think now we actually have to do something about it. And that's sad.
Starting point is 00:05:51 That is sad because it's going to make the AUR quite a bit less approachable for new. people who want to like, you know, upload new package, for people who want to take over old packages. At the same time, though, if it's not dealt with, like, it's just going to honestly lead to more and more burnout, right? Because we can say the AUR doesn't need to change. The point of the AUR is to, like, just find package builds, all this good stuff. But at the same time, every time there is a new malware attack, things get shut down. Everybody is on high alert. Everybody's got to go and do these, like, examination of the packet builds.
Starting point is 00:06:24 make sure there's like no malware on the AUR. And every time all it does is just creates more and more and more work for people who are, for the most part, volunteers, who are already pretty overworked, where I just don't see how the approach we are taking right now is sustainable, where every month, every couple of weeks, oh, well, time to shut down the AURR again because there's a big malware attack.
Starting point is 00:06:53 Oh, look, there's a bunch of infestilers. uh, that's a problem, right? Like, I just, unless you're just going to say, fuck it, do whatever you want, I don't care anymore. Like, I just,
Starting point is 00:07:04 I just don't see how the current model is at all sustainable. But, you know, I know there's been a lot of different approaches on how this problem can be dealt with. I've spoken to some people about some AI scanning, uh,
Starting point is 00:07:24 AI scanning stuff where things that go into a package build, then there is a scan that is done, and then, hey, look, guys, if the AI finds something, then you go and delete it. Like, yeah, that does make sense as a way to deal with things, right? Like, the main problem with the AI stuff, though, is either you're going to run it locally, and then who knows what kind of power you're going to get from that, or you run it online, you, like, run one of, like, the cloud models.
Starting point is 00:07:56 then it's a matter of where does the funding for that come from? Do you want to divert funding from Arch Linux itself over to the AUR for dealing with this problem? Or is it better to maybe slow down the rate of package adoptions where let's say we still have packaged adoptions but instead of just you can grab something, you've got to apply for a package adoption, then somebody has to, like one of the trust to maintainers has to come along and say,
Starting point is 00:08:22 hey, I think that you're okay to take this on, I don't think you are, come back later when you maintain more things, things like that, right? But then if you can have people in the mix, then that's another thing for the overwork maintainers to be doing. And it's just, it's this situation where I don't think there is a good way out of this. I think no matter what ends up being done, it's going to lead to a UR that is a degraded experience from what we have now. it's either going to be every other month, every other couple of weeks,
Starting point is 00:08:58 whatever it happens to be, we have another shutdown, we have massive cleanup, and then things are just dead for another month after that, or we do AI scanning, then there's a big cost of that, or we have people in the mix,
Starting point is 00:09:10 and then it's like, oh, well, now things are much slower to get onto the AUR, or some mix of all the above, right? Like, you can do a thing where it's like, oh, I'm going to have an AI scan,
Starting point is 00:09:22 and I'm going to have have people in the mix for, let's say you have an AI scan for just general package changes and then you have a human in the mix for any sort of package adoptions, something like that. I don't know. Right now, the chaotic AUR is actually a much safer way to use the AUR. The chaotic AUR does have a trusted maintainer system. They do actually go and review package builds every time they bring a new update it. They have a filtered version of the AOR, which makes this actually viable. Yeah. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:10:00 Now, some people are going to say, oh, well, flat pack is safer because flat packs are sandbox. And sure, for certain kinds of malware out there, a flat pack is going to be safe. If we're talking about like a general infestaler, I don't really know if that's viable as a flat pack. However, you still have a situation where people can impersonate other software as a flat pack. and it's still not perfect, right? Like, anyone's suggesting a packaging solution as a solution to malware, like, that's just not going to happen, right?
Starting point is 00:10:36 Even if you just, like, go to a core repo situation, people can have keys that get stolen, people can have accounts that are compromised, things like that. No solution is perfect. It's just, like with all security, right? It's a risk management. It's going to be one of these episodes. Apologies for anyone who's issues with like stuttering and falling over words
Starting point is 00:10:58 because it's really going to be a rough one for that. What was I saying? Fuck. Oh, risk management. Yes, yes, yes. Any kind of security is a risk management problem, right? What is your, what is your attack vector that people are using?
Starting point is 00:11:20 How much danger are you actually under, right? what are people trying to do and how much are you worth as a target? If you're locking up a bike, this is actually a really good example. If you're looking up a bike, there's different kinds of locks you can buy. You can buy a simple chain lock,
Starting point is 00:11:41 one that you can just break with a pair of side cutters, or you can get something that's a little bit stronger where you can't really break it with like a regular pair of side cutters, but if you get hydraulic side cutters, well, now you can break it. Or you can go even further than that and spend like $300 on a bike lock and the only way to break it is with an angle grinder. Now, some of them do have really shitty locks,
Starting point is 00:12:09 and if someone knows how to lock pick, maybe they can get in through that way. But there's these different tiers of, okay, where am I storing my bike? What do I need to worry about here? Is this an area where someone is going to reasonably have access to an angle grinder? Is my bike worth bringing an angle grinder to and possibly getting immediately caught because you have a fucking angle grinder? The same thing is true here with the AUR.
Starting point is 00:12:40 How much is the AUR worth? How much is it then worth putting users at risk to allow some level of malware, right? any level of additional security is going to make it less convenient. Great way to look at this is with a password. Obviously, you should be using a password manager, but for people that like to write down their passwords,
Starting point is 00:13:05 if it's just anything goes, no password, minimum length, it's really easy to write a password. Then you have a minimum length. Don't do maximum length. Maximilence is really bad. Terrible idea, stop doing that. But then it's like, okay, minimum length. Oh, you need to include symbols and numbers.
Starting point is 00:13:22 and oh, well, you can't actually use passwords that are part of the standard list of dictionary attacks, and oh, you can't use this and you can't use that and you can't use this. And it's just making the password more and more and more complicated. And that's just the trade-off you have to deal with security. If you want to make something safer, you have to make it less convenient. The safest possible thing for the AUR is for a.U.R. is for it's not exist. Now, obviously, that's not exactly a very convenient packaging solution.
Starting point is 00:14:00 So, you have to make these trade-offs like, okay, is it worth having a delay for package adoptions? How important are package adoptions? Do we even want to have package adoptions, or if something gets orphaned, does it just get archived on the repo? and it's like a whole separate thing and then if somebody wants to take over that package, they need to then make a whole new package that then like flags you for taking over an existing package name.
Starting point is 00:14:31 And then if you're going to do that, do you just want to have human review? Do you want to have AI review? What do you want to do to ensure this is safe? Or do you just want it to be a free-for-all and you can do basically anything you want within the confines of naming things and it has to be in a Git repo with a certain structure for the AUR. I don't know.
Starting point is 00:14:57 I don't know. This is going to be something that the arch team is going to have to spend a lot of time worrying about. And honestly, I wish the best for them. Because it is not an easy situation they're in right now. But who knows? Who knows? What I do know is Val's been doing a lot of really cool stuff
Starting point is 00:15:22 I've been doing this earlier this week I guess it came out today as a recording but probably like three days ago as of the time of the full episode when the clip comes out I don't know we'll see when the clip comes out the prior week of the clip releasing
Starting point is 00:15:37 Valve's been doing a lot of really cool things that was been doing a lot of really cool things for a long time I think a lot of people forget that Valve has been doing stuff on Linux way, way longer than people might think. The first thing of people think of with Linux is probably the Steam machine, not the new one, but the original terrible idea they had many, many years ago. What year was that? Like 2013?
Starting point is 00:16:04 Um, OG. Um, let me show. No, not the Steam page. I want the Wikipedia. Now that is the new one. the steam machine... Sorry, the original were the Steam Machines. The new one is the Steam Machine. I actually didn't even realize there was that branding distinction.
Starting point is 00:16:31 Let me see. Steam machines, that... Oh, 2015. Why does I think 2013? What is 2013? When did Steam release on Linux? 2013. Okay, that's what... Maybe that's what I was thinking of. Either way.
Starting point is 00:16:51 Most people think of the steam machines, or they think of Steam releasing on Linux. But things go back way, way further than that. There are talks from the early 2000s of... like Gabe talking about how important it was to bring game servers over to Linux. That was like one of the early things they did. back at a time where Linux was, you know, it was sort of this very tiny thing. It was like definitely growing in the web space because people don't want to pay for Unix.
Starting point is 00:17:25 They didn't want to pay for Windows server. So it made a lot of sense to bring those servers over. But they've always just been doing these like little things in the background, right? Fex, for example, they were funding Fex for seven years, six years before the Steamframe like even. remotely got announced, right? Five years before, like, any sort of rumours. Just, maybe not entirely secretly, but just funding Fex,
Starting point is 00:17:54 which is a X-80-6-2-Arm translation layer, which is a core part of how we are going to be playing Windows games on the Steamframe. And if they're doing this, right, what does that mean for any sort of future things they work on? Are we going to see an arm-powered steam deck? Are we going to see an arm-powered steam machine? Are we going to see something else entirely
Starting point is 00:18:20 that they've not even, like, remotely hinted at? Because this is something like Val's been doing for so long. Like, I know that they, like, sell... Look, I... I talked about Valve in a video a few weeks. I talked about Valve and many videos. But in the video, I said, like, Valve's not perfect, right? And I mentioned the whole like gambling stuff.
Starting point is 00:18:44 They are like one of the core reasons why we have micro transactions in Western games. Obviously Maple Story and stuff like that was a big part as well. But Valve, like, Valve was one of the companies that sort of made it normalized in the West. And someone was like, oh my God, you've bought into the propaganda about Valve and microtransactions. Or don't you want to be out to sell your in-game? items? No. No, actually. I'd much rather the in-game items to be into the game, not to have a monetary value. And, well, Counter-Strike is a whole beast in that regard, and I am very glad that I never got into caring about that game, you know, unless I had pulled a skin,
Starting point is 00:19:37 which was worth a lot of money, and then maybe I'd care about the game. But, putting aside those problems that Valve has. I don't know like where things go, right? Like, because right now we have basically just good working gaming on Linux through Proton, which is funding the wine project, funding, uh, hire the DXVK developer, hired some other random people involved with that project. We have arm to, sorry, X86 to arm translation. We now have them working on a fork of, wait.
Starting point is 00:20:13 Now the wagerid thing is a little bit weird. I don't really get what's going on there. So I talked about this the other day and the wageroy devs actually replied to me. We would have definitely been interested in working with them, working on them with this. That's part of what caught us off guard in regards to the fact that Valve really hasn't said anything regarding wageroid. So lepton, that is their fork of wageroid. And it's very obvious. a fork if you look at what the project is doing, look at how it functions, it's very obviously Waydroid, but they've not worked with Upstream, they've not funded upstream, they've not really done anything with the project, and right now, WaiDroid is basically just entirely in the dark, but WaiDroy is what is letting them play Android VR games on the seam frame. Combine that with Fex to convert the x86 to window x86 to
Starting point is 00:21:17 I'm sorry and like lepton wageroid is as important to the steam frame as wine and proton is but they've just said nothing about it I don't know what's going on there
Starting point is 00:21:35 I really don't know what's going on there what I do know is we're in a situation now where on Linux, it's really starting to not matter where games are coming from. Doesn't matter if they're from Windows, doesn't matter if they're from Android, doesn't matter if they're arm games, you can just play them on your regular Linux, X-86, AMD or Intel system. I don't know where this goes, right?
Starting point is 00:22:08 Like, what are they going to work on next? they're still funding KDE. Recently they started funding, I guess maybe a while, like I recently got announced that they were funding RadV for Windows, which is the AMD Vulcan driver for Linux as part of the Mesa project, ported over to Windows. Now, the logic there is
Starting point is 00:22:30 if you can have RadV on Windows, that's a shared code base. So if there are problems with Rad V on the Windows side, they can be fixed for the Linux side, for the Linux side, for the Windows side. Shared code bases, if done well, can make things easier. If done poorly, well, can give you a nightmare of compatibility issues. But what do you do now, right?
Starting point is 00:22:55 Like, yeah, sure, Steam deck too would be nice. But what do you do to make it different? Do you just do another Steam deck? And if you do another Steam deck, when do you do that? because there's been rumors recently of the Steamframe pricing. And as you might expect, those rumors are not great. Not great at all. Where is, can we find it?
Starting point is 00:23:28 Okay, people are just throwing out random numbers now. It's like, can you believe the Steamframe will be $1,800? Oh my God, the Steamframe's going to be $1,300. Um... Wait... Ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha This is a post from a year ago Here is my complete speculation on pricing for Steam frame, steam machine and steam controller 2
Starting point is 00:24:01 Frame 800 machine 500 controller 60 Ha Honestly I wouldn't be surprised if that's kind of like the pricing they were originally going for. There's no world it's going to be like that. A lot of people are expecting more like 11, 1,200 for the Steam frame. It's just like
Starting point is 00:24:28 oh honestly like I don't really know what valves how would I say it? Not intention but what Valve internally thinks about these releases because
Starting point is 00:24:45 my understanding is they basically just had old hardware the AMD had like laying around and bought that up to put in the steam machine and probably roughly the same thing with what they're doing with the steam frame. So they couldn't delay the release too long because otherwise the hardware would just be even older than it is. But then you've got to release into a market where everything is hyperinflated. So it's just a situation where even though it should do well, pricing is just so fucking cooked right now. that everything's against it. It was already an underpowered device,
Starting point is 00:25:25 and that it's an underpowered device in a market where everything is hyper inflated. And for the market, it's not a bad price. It's just... Everything's a bad price, right? Relatively, it's a fine price. It's just... The point of comparison fucking sucks,
Starting point is 00:25:44 and a lot of people's comparison point hasn't updated, so they're still seeing PC prices where they were, like, two years ago, when they were at like semi-normal prices or even worse, like six years ago, seven years ago, like pre-COVID pricing, where you could just buy shit really cheap. That was a nice time. I enjoyed that time. We're not there anymore, sadly.
Starting point is 00:26:07 And I don't think we're getting back there, like, I would say anytime soon. Frankly, at this point, I'm going to say, I don't think we're getting back there ever. And this is just the new normal. This is the world we're going to live with now. and everything is just really expensive. So, I assume Valve probably knew that the steam machine launch was going to be,
Starting point is 00:26:30 I don't want to call it a paper launch, because there is devices out there. It's just, I can't imagine they're selling that many. Like, oh yeah, maybe it looks sold out and all that good stuff. But how many devices were they actually allocating? What are they actually selling? Right? That's the big question. We don't really know proper sales figures.
Starting point is 00:26:56 And it's probably going to be just as bad with the Steamframe. But what does this mean for their future of dealing with Linux? I can't imagine they pull out because of this, right? That would seem crazy. They've been invested in Linux for like 20 years at this point. Maybe they were just willing to eat the loss as just like a, hey guys, look, you can game on Linux. But I don't, the thing about Valve is Valve doesn't, it's not a publicly traded company. So the way it moves in the market isn't as obvious as something like an anthropic or a med or any of these like big companies where there is like shareholder value, their goal is
Starting point is 00:27:39 maximizing shareholder value. So I don't know what comes next. I don't know if they're going to focus more on the software side and just abandon the idea of being the ones building Linux devices if you're gonna focus more on the operating system side and then providing that operating system
Starting point is 00:28:03 to different consumers, different like OEMs that want to build things like maybe that makes more sense, right? Maybe it makes more sense to Val, for Val, to just be like a software company
Starting point is 00:28:13 and then let other companies do the hardware stuff and eat the loss when problems happen. Was like the Steam Deck and the Steam Deck and the software company? steam machine, like effectively a tech demo for that?
Starting point is 00:28:24 I can't imagine that was their plan originally, but all things considered with like the state of price and all this stuff, it's got to be like, that's got to be how they've shifted. But I'm curious to see what we end up seeing long term. Because I know that Tech Paladin actually recently opened hiring for two new people. So, by the looks of it, Valve is still more than willing to keep funding that KDE work. But, like, how long? And if it is going to be a long time, what's the ultimate end goal? Is it just to make Linux a viable platform outside of Windows?
Starting point is 00:29:09 Like, is that just the end goal? Because I know for a long time, really, ever since, like, the Microsoft source stuff when coming in like Windows 8, that was like when there was like the big push on the Linux side, the big push to make Linux a viable platform outside of Windows. But is it just that? I don't know. I don't know.
Starting point is 00:29:32 Like right now, Valve's in a situation where they've kind of cornered the Linux market because the other platforms don't really care. Okay, I guess there was the recent thing with GOG. Let me see if I can find it. Now I say recent thing, but the same thing has happened about a decade ago. Where is the post? Ah, do you know, that's the Rad V1. Yes, yes, yes.
Starting point is 00:30:04 So this is a post... Okay, no, no, okay. Both of these posts are from gaming on Linux. So, we have this post here from July 28th. GOG confirmed they are working towards GOG Galaxy on Linux, which is really cool. Now obviously you don't need to use the GOG client to play GOG games, like the whole one of GOG is no DRM, all that good stuff. But it is nice to have a client from the company that is offering the service. There are third-party clients, all those good stuff, they can sort things together, but it is nice to have this.
Starting point is 00:30:43 Now, the main reason you should take this with a giant grain assault, though, is this is a post from 10 years ago. GEOG staff state the Galaxy for Linux is still being worked on, but still no ETA. So, they said basically the exact same thing 10 years ago, I guess, nine years ago, and, um... You know, we've still not seen anything there. But I guess saying it again, there has been like new owners of GOG, so maybe that's going to be the reason that happens. I don't know. At the very least, having at least one more company that goes and supports the Linux side of things is just a good thing. It's just every little thing that changes, every little improvement is one more step along the line.
Starting point is 00:31:37 Maybe at some point, I don't know, maybe at some point we'll see. like an epic for example, right? If a lot of these like random other things support Linux, maybe at some point Epic comes along and says, okay, well, I guess now we'll bring Fortnite to Linux. Now we'll bring whatever game at the time. It happens to be the big game. Probably still Fortnite.
Starting point is 00:31:58 But for now, for now we just wait. For now we just take little steps every day, you know, 1% improvements every single day. and then a year from now, five years from now, we are much, much further along the path. Yeah. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:32:21 But I'm happy. I get to play my games on Linux. I can play Path of Exile. I can play trails to Asia. What else? Is there a game coming out I want to play? Probably. Oh yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
Starting point is 00:32:35 Actually, you know, we'll get to it now. We'll get to it now. So recently, recently this was announced. Monster Hunter Wilde's gold edition is now out on digital stores, bundling the game with all currently available cosmetic DLC packs, as well as other DLC and not included in previous packs. Existing hunters can get all add-ons separately with the new cosmetics DLC collection and extra cosmetic DLC packs.
Starting point is 00:33:03 The digital version of Monster Wilde's base game has also received a permanent price reduction. So, if we go to Steam, I don't know what the US pricing is, but I'm not in the US, so that is your problem. Okay, it is $40 US now for the base game. In Australia, that is $62.95, and for the new gold bundle, that is $122.22. So that is the base game, along with all of their... random cosmetic DLC, which works out to be $690 of DLC. Modern video game. Jesus fucking Christ, man.
Starting point is 00:33:57 Jesus fucking Christ. Now, some people are like, oh, why did they do this? And there's the other thing where it was like, oh, they've got the, um, where is it? They've got the prologue demo here. Why would you release a demo for a game that came out? Started last year. I thought it was longer. Why would you release a demo for a game that came out a year ago? Well, they have the new expansion coming, which do we know when that's coming?
Starting point is 00:34:26 Mons under Wild expansion. Ascendance comes out next year. Next year. Okay, okay. That's why they released the gold pack. why they lowered the price. That's why they have the prologue demo because
Starting point is 00:34:45 they want to get people excited once again for the game. This happened with World, right? Towards the end of the World life cycle, Wild, and Wilds was getting ready to be announced, they did like a massive promo of World. I think
Starting point is 00:35:04 what was the price for it at the time? SteamDB, MH World. I want to It was like some stupid price for like both of the, the base scheme and the expansion. Can we see? Price history, here we go. Yeah, yeah.
Starting point is 00:35:27 I don't know which. They've done so many promos of it. I don't know which one it was. But they lowered it down to like, I think I paid like $15 Australian for it, something like that. But it seems like they're lowering it even lower. now. So, who knows? Um, anytime that, anytime that they're getting ready for some like big thing to happen, this tends to happen. They just drop the price into the floor and it's like,
Starting point is 00:35:56 hey guys, enjoy. Actually, I've got the page open right now, 16,000 people in world. How many people are playing wild? I don't actually know. Well, that's, uh, well, well, There are more people playing World than are playing Wilds. That is a great selling point for the game. Holy shit. Yeah. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:36:30 I haven't played Wilds since like the pre-launch Alpha Week. Not Alpha Week. They called it like a, what do they call it? Do they call it? Beta Weekend? I don't know what they called it. The like the pre-launch thing where I tried to run the game, it ran fucking terribly. And then when I got into the hub area, it crashed my entire computer.
Starting point is 00:36:59 That was good. Now apparently, the game runs better now. I don't know. Maybe it does. Maybe it doesn't. There is the demo out now. The demo is free. So I might have to give the demo a shot.
Starting point is 00:37:14 and see if it is better, see if it is worth it. Because I did like World, right? Like, World was really, really fun. And you will see that Wilds does have a lot of recent negative reviews. The main reason for that is whilst they do have the bundle here for buying the game along with all the DLC, they don't have a discounted bundle if you already have the game.
Starting point is 00:37:48 Now you can buy the bundle, right? Like you can just buy the DLC bundle. If you have the game, you can just buy the bundle and you get the same price that everybody else gets buying the bundle. Or they have like a separate bundle thing you can grab. It's like Monster Hunter Wild's DLC collection or something like that.
Starting point is 00:38:09 It's listed somewhere. I don't know where. Doesn't really matter. If you just look it up, you'll find it. But people bought the Premium Edition, especially people who bought the Premium Edition, they're like, I bought the Premium Edition, why don't I get all the DLC?
Starting point is 00:38:26 And I get it, right? I totally get it. But at the end of the day, I don't own the game. At the end of the day, it's not my problem, because I didn't buy the game because when the game came out, it was a fucking shit show. Yeah. Actually, let's go.
Starting point is 00:38:44 Let's actually look at all the show graph. Let's look at the negative reviews here. Is it all just about pricing? Gold Edition. Gold edition. Performance still is a problem. Gold edition.
Starting point is 00:39:11 Performance problems. Still some performance problems. Okay, it seems like this... Okay, uh, performance problems. Okay, there's still definitely some performance problems people are talking about. Uh, it's basically just a mix of gold editions and performance of the game is still rough. So, I don't know. Maybe it's better, maybe it's not.
Starting point is 00:39:41 Apparently it's better. I've heard mixed things, right? I've heard people say the game works totally fine now. I've heard other people say it is still entirely fucked. I just need to go and play it and see what the state actually is. And see, is it actually fucked? Is it actually playable? Like, what state is this actually in?
Starting point is 00:40:05 Because nobody is a reliable narrator right now. Absolutely nobody. It's like, and I don't know, maybe it's also hard, but dependent. That could also be the case as well. But apparently some people have the game working totally fine on the Steam deck. So if it works fine on the Steam deck, presumably... I don't know. Is Monster...
Starting point is 00:40:27 Let's just look it up. Is Monster Hunter Wilde playable now? This is... Let's go. Four months ago. So we have someone here saying the state is exceptional now. Peak. Way better than when it relates.
Starting point is 00:40:48 however it still crashed in my rig. Okay. It's on its best state now, well that's not a high bar. It was terrible before, so I'd hope it's better than it was. Um, I'll have to see if I'm going to find a video from...
Starting point is 00:41:09 Oh, there's a thing from like a month ago. Here's a thing from Steam Deck HQ. Monster Wilde is technically playable, but still, not enjoyable. So I assume this is specifically going to be on the deck. It was ultimately unplayable on the Steam deck,
Starting point is 00:41:32 okay. Um, but it got a playable badge as of a month ago. 28 FPS on the deck. Okay. That's actually a relatively good sign. Those are some pretty rough 1% lows though.
Starting point is 00:41:55 really, really bad 0.1% lows. I think it's at least worth checking out the prologue. At the very least, giving the prolog a try. I never finished Icebourne. I got distracted playing other games and all this stuff, right? Like,
Starting point is 00:42:14 Montantera is a game where you grind and you grind and you grind and you grind and eventually comes to a point where it's like, you just sort of fade out of it and you go do something else and you're like, shit, do I just pick back up where I am oh shit I'm in my I'm halfway through master rank now I fucking suck at the game
Starting point is 00:42:33 how do I even keep playing anymore where I am and you don't want to restart because you've already put like 300 hours in the game so what the fuck do you do either way demo's free I don't know how big the demo is um because it goes up to
Starting point is 00:42:53 I think chapter three Um, okay, let me, let me, let me, let me, let me check my Steam. I just added it to my library. Uh, logging in, okay, you won't be able to see it, but I can at least tell you. Monster Hunter, Wilde's prologue demo. The prolog demo is 22.89 gigabytes. Okay, okay, okay. I'll give it a shot. I'll give it a shot, see what it's like. If it's terrible, hey, it's terrible.
Starting point is 00:43:36 And I'll move on with my life. I've got plenty of other things to play, like lots and lots, apart of exile. We're not going to talk about Peaweedy again today. I could, but we're not going to. Instead, what we will talk about is, I don't know if you guys have been paying attention,
Starting point is 00:44:01 but there has been this Pokemon red and blue decomp project going on. And it has made some people irrationally angry. So the decomp is getting a lot of like crazy mods. There's like a mod that gives it like an isometric perspective, adds in like lighting and shadows and it's not even like like add all the same game at this point.
Starting point is 00:44:29 There's another mod I still like this one added in like a 3D tree into the battle scene. I'll see if I can find some of the other stuff. Pokemon Red. Okay. Pokemon Red. I can't spell apparently.
Starting point is 00:44:54 There's another where I saw it added like 3D models in... Yeah, here we go. Here's the one. Added like 3D models into the battle scene. and like a movable 3D camera as well, like a third person camera as well.
Starting point is 00:45:12 And this, this has made so, like so many people so fucking angry. And I don't get it. There is this weird thing going on right now where if a decomp exists and they don't like it, people are just like freaking out about it. It's like, oh my God, this ruins the aesthetic. This does this, this does that? Like, does it matter? Like at all?
Starting point is 00:45:41 Here's actually one that didn't see anyone crashing out about. This is Brad Lynch posting. Looking at, um, Pokemon Red in VR, which is kind of sick. Absolutely kind of sick. Here's another one. This has got some like,
Starting point is 00:45:55 oh yeah, this is the first person one where you can play in VR. So not even just like looking at the game in VR. I actually look through the players' eyes, which yes, obviously, like all of this stuff is kind of, dumb, kind of gimmicky.
Starting point is 00:46:11 I get it. I totally get it. But at the end of the day, I love stupid shit like this. I think the reason why some people are crashing out about it is some people are saying things like,
Starting point is 00:46:27 oh, this is better than anything Game Freak has made in 20 years, or actually the better ones are, hey look, after 30 years, we finally get a red and blue remake for getting the red and blue rig remix we've got and then the remakes of the remakes
Starting point is 00:46:43 and you know, we've had two sets of remakes of red and blue but I do get the the the the the the this is better than anything game free has made a long time. Those
Starting point is 00:46:56 those comments I get why it pisses people off but at the same point at the same time like if you are still defending the state of modern Pokemon I don't know what to tell you man like you're just in an abusive relationship. You just love...
Starting point is 00:47:15 You just love taking it in all the wrong ways. I get it, right? Pokemon's your childhood. You love Pokemon. I get it, right? I totally get it. But like,
Starting point is 00:47:28 it's not the DSC era anymore. It's not the GBA era anymore. It's not the 3DS era anymore. Pokemon kind of fucking new... You know? It's not in the best of healthiest states. And it's the same thing why Pokemon fans get pissed off with Power World as well. Because Power World came along and actually made something where, like, the Pokemon company doesn't give a shit, right?
Starting point is 00:47:53 Like, the Pokemon company is never going to make something that is as interesting. And the thing is, Pokemon fans happily agree when it's about another Pokemon game. Because they'll talk about how great Pokemon Snap is. or the fucking, like, the Animal Crossing one, the fucking, not Animal Crossing. The, like, the one where it's like, you're, like, looking after this fucking, uh, apocalyptic world and you're, like, building up this town. Whatever the fuck that one was killed.
Starting point is 00:48:25 Or, like, people glaze, like, Pokemon Colosseum from, like, way back in the day. Or, like, they'll glaze all of these games if they're Pokemon games. But if it's not a Pokemon game, it's like, don't even, don't, don't even. Don't even remotely talk. No, how dare you even mention the fact that the best thing about Pokemon is all the most interesting games have not been made by the main developers. It's always been some extra studio that's come in just for that game. Every single one of these, like Coliseum X the Gale of Darkness, Snap, the fucking Animal Crossing one. All of these are different studios because mainline Pokemon, there's just been no competition for so long. There just has not been any sort of popular monster, popular creature collector. And there's been games that have come along that tried to do that. Yochai Watch, for example, that... The problem with the Yoko Watch is that came along in a state where Pokemon was still mostly good. If it came out now, maybe that would be different. There have been games that have come along like Monster Hunter stories, but Monster Hunter didn't really have much popularity. until world's, like, like the late part of world, go, like post-I-spawn.
Starting point is 00:49:44 So outside of Japan, nobody even really cared about Monsanto. Yes, I know. I know to the rise fans and the, like, the fucking, the fans of the earlier games, I get it. But, like, you got to acknowledge that Monsanto wasn't popular. It might have been great. It might have even been better, right? But, like, it wasn't popular. World, and especially Icebourne made Monster Hunter popular.
Starting point is 00:50:09 better or worse. I know there's Monsonda fans who are not exactly, um, happy about the modern state of the series. But that's not here nor there. Pokemon fans just, they just love abuse. Pokemon fans just love abuse. They will just eat shit for years and tell you how great it is and how, oh my God, I love Pokemon, steal, it's so great. Let alone the state of like the Pokemon card game. There's nothing wrong with the card game. It's just, unless you're buying single cards, specifically for meta if you want to like collect Pokemon cards
Starting point is 00:50:44 you fuck you like if you're buying if you're trying to like build competitive decks sure whatever totally fine if you're a kid who wants to get into just having Pokemon cards sucks to suck I guess
Starting point is 00:50:59 you should have bought Pokemon cards fucking 20 years ago yeah yeah I fell out of Pokemon a long time ago I still occasionally watch the Pokemon anime I've not watched the latest series.
Starting point is 00:51:15 I did watch Journeys, the previous one? I started watching the Pokemon anime backup with X and Y. And Pokemon anime is in a pretty good state. But, you know, I've not watched the newest ones ever since they got rid of Mr. Satoshi or Ash. I don't know if it's good. Maybe it's good. I don't know.
Starting point is 00:51:34 I've not been paying attention to it. But by all accounts, it's probably in a better state than the games, and probably in a better state than not being out of buy cards for anything that is less than a stupid, stupid price for packs. Another thing is ever going to change, right? I don't think... Until we will realize that
Starting point is 00:51:52 cardboard is not exactly a investment. Yeah. Yeah. I don't know. Maybe there will come a point where it crashes back down, but who knows? Who knows? I think... Well, they could immediately crash it by just
Starting point is 00:52:09 dumping out cards to the market. You know, the Yu-Giou approach. Where you dumps. You dump out so many fucking cards, you do so many reprints that nothing is worth anything. Which is great for the players, totally great for the players. Not exactly great for the card shops who have to stock merchandise that nobody is buying because there is no value to it. But, you know, card games, card games. Never be much of a card game myself, but I keep it in my periphery every so often.
Starting point is 00:52:46 Things I also keep in my periphery are gotcha games. Now, this is not a gotcha game. However, the technology... The technology is here. So, okay, a bit of preamble here. There is a very long-running JRP series called Atilia. The latest game... What number are we on right?
Starting point is 00:53:17 now on the main series. 26. Yes. Yes. Atilia 26. This is our protagonist of the video game.
Starting point is 00:53:33 Yes. Anyway. So, the series has been really popular in Japan for a long time. But the point where it became popular in the West and really
Starting point is 00:53:45 just revived the series entirely is with Atilia Riser. Now, I don't need to explain why, but you can work it out for yourself. If you were just listening, just Google
Starting point is 00:54:00 Atilia Riser, Razer Lyseline Stout, and you will work out very quickly why the series got popular again with the addition of RISA section. Anyway, so recently
Starting point is 00:54:16 recently we saw Gust, who are the developers of the Attila series, make an announcement. Japan is about to test an officially licensed RPG that changes according to what the player says, Razor Chat, lets you tell its heroine to gather materials, craft a weapon, fight a monster, camp by a lake, or build an entire hot spring town. The AI decides how much instruction unfolds, uh, how each instruct, unfolds and keeps track of inventory, stamina, currency and progress. If it works, every major game publisher will want a character that never runs out of quests. So, whilst they are not doing AI generated art, what they are doing, it's all fully like, licensed with the voice actors, is, um, they have turned Riser into a chatbot.
Starting point is 00:55:16 I'm telling you now. This is the future of Gutscher money. I'm telling you now. This is the future of Gutscher games. This is infinite Gutscher money. I think something people are going to have to come to terms with is a lot of, especially Asian studios, are... far more willing to make use of AI.
Starting point is 00:55:51 We recently saw this with the Stellar Blade Blood Rain trailer, music video, which the CEO of ShiftUp was like, we made Eve, we don't, like, we made a fun music video, we don't care, basically.
Starting point is 00:56:11 And there was, There was a, I think it was, um, oh, there was a couple of big Japanese voice actors who came together to license their voices for AI use, had like an AI app thing, another one of these chatbot thingies, I think it was. But I could very much see this being a, um, major, major selling point in whatever the next big gotcha game is going to be. Gotcha games thrive on the wifus and the husbandos. They thrive on you developing a relationship with the PNG.
Starting point is 00:56:54 Now, if you can actually develop a relationship with the PNG, thanks to having AI synthesized voices, you know, speaking like this character, speaking in a way this character would spin, infinite money. Now, I do think regulation should probably come in and deal with this, deal with this situation where it gets so much worse, but until that happens, what I can say for a fact is we are guaranteed to see some big degenerate game dive into this as much as possible. Absolutely. 100% if this doesn't happen
Starting point is 00:57:44 I'll genuinely be surprised I will genuinely be surprised because I don't if this does well if this does well and there's already the whole like AI girlfriend stuff that's already like gained a lot of
Starting point is 00:57:59 I'll say attention I wouldn't say it's positive attention but definitely gained a lot of attention um I'm sure especially some of the less than ethical companies are going to see what they can do with that. And I can assure you it is going to be monetized in a way where it's just going to be, well, let's just say it's going to be monetized in a way that, you're going to wish you go back. to traditional
Starting point is 00:58:40 gacha games because you're not only going to gutcha for the kind of costumes they'll wear and you're going to give them like
Starting point is 00:58:49 live 2D models they move around like they're a V-tuber they like maybe live 2D models depending on what you want to do depending on where the tech is at the time
Starting point is 00:58:57 you're not going to just do that maybe you're going to even gutcha for like certain kinds of maybe the costumes are attached to certain kinds of mechanics and then there's a situation
Starting point is 00:59:06 where it's like oh rather than just getting the ultimate ability, like you're tearing up your ultimate ability, if you get multiple copies that unlocks additional tiers of what they'll talk about. Ooh, ooh, you gotcha to make your go. You gotcha for your PNG girlfriend to do the, ooh, do something with you. Who knows? Who knows? Is it an all ages game? Is it not an all ages game? Who knows? Maybe, uh, maybe there'll be something where you can pay for a, uh, not all ages mode. And obviously it wouldn't just be an individual thing.
Starting point is 00:59:41 It'd likely be something you've got to like got you for. Maybe it's like a secret sixth tier, a version of the secret triple S-R, I don't know, some like crazy rare version. 0.0001% drop and it can't be pity systemed. Who knows? Who knows? What I do know is, um, they're going to try it.
Starting point is 01:00:16 I'm telling you now they're going to try it. Welcome to your future. Welcome to your AI future. Speaking of your future, probably not going to be your future, but I do think is actually kind of cool. So there is a thing called hop. Dot Earth, you can drive anywhere in the world. Basically, it takes information from open street map
Starting point is 01:00:42 and then builds a game world with that. So you can just drive around the real world. Now, it's probably going to be really broken in certain areas, really cooked, but, like, this is the kind of stuff that I think, like, makes modern tech really cool. Like, we have all of this mapping data. We have all of this geometry data, geography data.
Starting point is 01:01:12 Geography? Yeah, geography data. Why not do something like this? Right? Like, why not do something like this and just... It's really cool. Now, it's obviously, it's like a kind of niche thing right now. It's like a one-off thing, but like, there's so much of this cool data out there.
Starting point is 01:01:33 I'm curious to see what other people do with it. And I don't just mean, like, other bullshit that... Let's see, what is this? Someone... What is this fucking... What is this fucking note? It's not generating real time. It cannot drive on any road since roads.
Starting point is 01:01:51 won't load. And satellite elevation is a loose term here. It's lower resolution of the 30 meter DTM. So topography is way off. What is this? What is this fucking note? I don't know what happened with, um, with, um, with, um, with, um, with a fucking community notes on Twitter recently, but they've just gotten like, they've basically just turned into a way for people to like shit post and just as a way to be like, hey guys, on my, opinion is more important than leaving it as a comment. I'm going to make it a community under the Monster Wilds post
Starting point is 01:02:27 there was like a community note being like Sony is getting rid of physical games. Don't support Monster Hunter because it's a video game. It's just like Sony didn't publish the game. This has nothing to do with Sony. Like what the fuck
Starting point is 01:02:43 you do? And like all the comments under it as well were the same thing as well like physical game. Ghiby physical game. I want physical game. There is a physical version of the game so it's like, I don't know what fuck you're talking about. But everywhere you go, everywhere you go,
Starting point is 01:03:00 there's always someone who is like just, even in place where it makes no sense, just harping on about it. And that's a whole separate topic. But, I don't know, that was just a random little thing I came across. I just think this is neat. I think this is neat.
Starting point is 01:03:16 And yeah, maybe it's not perfect. Maybe it's really far from perfect. Maybe most of the world is not included. but it's still really cool it is still really cool and I'm curious to see where this project goes and like if they're actually going to like
Starting point is 01:03:29 I don't know do something more than just like a I go hey I get my three minutes of fame my five minutes of fame and then just go about the rest of their life it seems like they have been
Starting point is 01:03:45 working this for a little bit though um this is a post from back in June. Um, it has gotten a lot of attention recently, so the servers are very, very, very cooked.
Starting point is 01:04:03 Um, yeah. Yeah. Okay, this is just a dev. Okay, so it seems like the dev is just very, very excited about talking about doing really cool stuff in the web. GTA6 in the browser
Starting point is 01:04:19 is here. Okay, they also do just say some stupid bullshit. This is... What does this have to do with GTA6? Literally, literally fucking nothing. Yeah. Since we're the topic of video games.
Starting point is 01:04:40 I did want to talk a bit about this. So, there is this game... What was the game fucking called? What is your game? Luminous Knights, that's what the game's called. So there's this game called Luminous Knights. Now, if you look at the game, well, it literally just tells you what it is. But if you just look at the game without reading anything else,
Starting point is 01:05:05 it's very obvious what this is if you played the game that not only inspired it, but this game is literally a clone of. This is a Kingdom Hearts clone. Now, I have seen a lot of people getting, again, getting very angry about this. game existing. Oh my god, it's a clone of Kingdom Hearts. Why would I play this game? I'd much rather just go and play Kingdom Hearts. And yeah, you can absolutely go and play Kingdom Hearts. Here's another one, um, this is about a Mirror's Edge clone. It's actually much funny to do this about Mirror's Edge. I just came across a Mirror's Edge
Starting point is 01:05:47 called PanLine that looks way too similar to Mirror's Edge despite its subtle differences. To be honest, I don't advocate for games straight up copying others like getting inspired is one thing, We're copying them one to one from aesthetics to the core gameplay I don't feel great about, but at the same time, I also want to point out how terrible EA is handling the IPs and studio talent. Mirrors Edge has been like a dead IP for... When did the last Mirror's Edge come out? Mirrors Edge. Uh, have already two games?
Starting point is 01:06:19 Or is there a third one? Mirrors Edge games. Okay, there was two games. when do Mirrish Edge 2 come out? That was 2016. So this is an IP that has been dead for a fucking decade now.
Starting point is 01:06:40 I don't really care if somebody wants to go and make a literal clone of Mirror's Edge. Nobody else is doing it. And this kind of goes back to the Power Ward thing, right? Well, Power World's very different. Power World is, like people call it,
Starting point is 01:06:56 oh, it's Pokemon with guns. It's not really Pokemon with guns. Yes, it is a creature collector. Yes, there are guns. But it's a survival game, right? It's nothing even remotely close to Pokemon outside of the fact that it has monsters and bowls, and you battle
Starting point is 01:07:11 the monsters. That is where the connections, like, that's where the connections end. This right here, though, Panline literally is just Mirrors Edge. It's Mirrors Edge with a different accent color. And luminous Knights literally is the music also sounds
Starting point is 01:07:30 very kingdom-heartsy. This is literally kingdom-hearts. But I think a lot of people forget that this is the way that a lot of genres start, right? When you think about... When you think about like FPS games, for example, Wolfenstein came out. Wolfentine wasn't the first FPS.
Starting point is 01:07:56 Wolfentine was one of the very early ones. And there was a bunch of games which were basically as Wolfenstein. When Call of Duty was like the really big FPS, there was a lot of games which were basically just Call the Judy It is really common especially in the earlier days of Especially back when FPS was first being started The term at the time when Doom came out it was then Doom clone Right
Starting point is 01:08:21 Doom clone was the the genre term until FPS became like the the new standard term because it just didn't really make any sense because Game started the verge so far from what Doom and Wolfensdine actually were. You get a lot of this with the Hollow Knight stuff. Well, there's a lot of these Hollow Night clones. They're not just Metroidvania games, right? Metroidvania is an established genre, but there is a subset of Metrovania games
Starting point is 01:08:50 where they have Pogoing, they have movement that is very similar to Hollow Night. Maybe they have aesthetic, similar. There's something about, if you've played Hollow Night, you can spot a game that's trying to be Hollow Night a mile away. And that's not a bad thing. That is not a bad thing at all. A lot of early RTS games were very similar.
Starting point is 01:09:17 A lot of early city builders were very similar. A lot of early RPGs were very similar. But this is the way that genres start. There were, okay, there's not that many games in the genre, but during the PS2 era there was a couple of these DMC clones that came out a notable one being
Starting point is 01:09:37 Dante's Inferno Is that the one? Dante's Inferno game Yes, Dante's Inferno 2010 game If you look at the gameplay It is literally God of War It is literally just God of War
Starting point is 01:09:55 There was another one yeah The Nightmare The Nightmare Before Christmas Oogie's Revenge Which sounds like a rand No, sorry That was a DMC clone
Starting point is 01:10:11 Yeah That was a DMC clone Not a god of war clone Yeah yeah Yeah sorry Sorry my bad on that one Was it Yeah yeah
Starting point is 01:10:20 Yeah that was the DMC one But Dante's Infoto Literally is just got a war And that's not bad That's not a bad thing at all Because when you start making more games
Starting point is 01:10:30 like another game game, that then sort of gives other people sort of, I guess, the leeway, maybe is a good way to say it, the encouragement to then go and try out something different. It's not like every game that comes out needs to sell exceptionally well. And this game, like, there's clearly a lot of areas where it still needs like a lot of polish. The combat's a little bit rough, movement's a little bit rough, the animation is a bit rough, but again, the The sounds are very much Kingdom Hearts as well. But I like the fact that someone is doing it. Because even though Kingdom Hearts is such a big franchise, there's never really, at least to the best of my knowledge, never been a game that just tried to do something in that similar kind of vein. Especially the Kingdom Hearts One style.
Starting point is 01:11:27 Kingdom Hearts One is a very different kind of game from two. one was a lot slower of a game, more methodical, smaller encounters, whereas two, it sort of leaned more into the fast-paced action and the game got a lot faster. Three then was way, way faster and I have problems with three for many reasons, but that's just one of them. But I can't fault someone for trying. I really can't fault someone for trying. Even if the game is not going to be incredible, even if the game is not going to change the world, like, just, hey, just like make a thing.
Starting point is 01:12:17 At the end of the day, if you're making a thing, like, yeah, I might criticize the thing, sure, whatever, but I can't really say, that you shouldn't do it. It doesn't... At the end of the day, there's like... How many games come out a day on Steam? How many games release
Starting point is 01:12:44 on Steam per day? 48 to 52. At the end of the day, right? Like, if it's not good, there's plenty of other games out there. You just, you don't need to... Not every game needs to be good. Sometimes it's okay for a game.
Starting point is 01:13:02 And to be fair, most of the games that come out are not good. It's okay just to be that like stepping stone. Even if it's just a stepping stone as the same developer, stepping stone along the way to just letting someone else make something really cool. That's just my thought. Maybe I'm wrong. And if I am wrong, feel free to disagree with me.
Starting point is 01:13:27 Now, something you're probably not going to disagree on about on. something you're probably not going to disagree with me about. Yeah, we'll go with that one. I've said a number of times on this channel, on this podcast, that I was going to get back to the gym. I've said that many times, and then I didn't end up doing it. However, however, I have finally changed that. I have finally changed that and I am going back to the gym.
Starting point is 01:14:00 For the past week, I have been going. I've gone probably five out of these seven days. It is honestly nice to get back to the gym. I missed it. I really did. It's not like a community thing. It's not like being around people, anything like that. Like being around, getting outside every day is a nice thing. But it's, there is something nice about starting your day
Starting point is 01:14:29 having accomplished something. And it doesn't have to be like a crazy difficult thing, but getting up, going, like, is... My next thing is just like actually consistently getting out of bed at a sensible fucking time, because I have been sleeping in like past 10. This has also been my reason to get up at like fucking 8 o'clock, get to the gym. Because I do get to bed at like midnight for like. my other job. Um, if I didn't, if I didn't work the other job, I probably would be getting to bed earlier, but I do right now. So midnight it is, maybe 12.30. Um, it's just, it is, it is nice to
Starting point is 01:15:20 just start your day, sweat a little bit and just know that even if nothing else in the day goes well, at the very least, you've accomplished one thing. At the very least, something has gone well and you've managed to do something. It's also been really nice to get back to the fucking sauna. Saunas are not a massive thing in Australia for obvious reasons. It gets a little bit hot here. But I really, really did miss the sauna. It's one of those things where it's just, I don't know, it's nice and relaxing to just
Starting point is 01:16:02 sweat your balls off. Now, the place I'm at, um, we don't have traditional saunas. It is the infrared saunas, is that it? Infrared, that's the one. Not, yeah, yeah, yeah. Infrared sauna.
Starting point is 01:16:18 Um, I don't know, like, people have different, there's like debating about whether infrared or traditional saunas are better. I believe most of the research is done with traditional saunas. Also, traditional saunas do get hotter.
Starting point is 01:16:38 But more of the heat is transferred into your body faster. So, I don't actually know which is better and which is worse. What I do know is sitting in the sauna after a workout is very nice. It is very, very nice. Also, because they're in... The last place I was at, it had a sauna room. And that makes sense for a traditional sauna. But the problem with that is you get people that don't know what sauna etiquette is.
Starting point is 01:17:15 Now, it's one thing if you're at a place where it's like, you know, I know in places in Europe where sauna the common, like talking in the sauna, all that, like, that's a normal thing. But like, when there's a thing up where it's like, hey guys, keep talking down, other people are in. It's also another thing when you're like in there with people you know. but when you're in there with randoms and they just won't shut the fuck up like I don't want to deal with you right now can you just
Starting point is 01:17:45 put your fucking earphones in and just sweat like everyone else here so having the individual sauna rooms actually is kind of nice as well I don't know it just the sauna is nice
Starting point is 01:18:00 the sauna is nice and even if I wasn't going like back to the gym to like actually work out just going there for the sauna would be enough of a reason for me to continue going and frankly it's much cheaper to get a
Starting point is 01:18:16 membership at a gym with a sauna than it is to actually go to a sauna place now obviously sauna places are going to have more options and all that stuff but if all you're looking for is a sauna a gym with a sauna is likely considerably cheaper Fun fact for anyone who just wants to
Starting point is 01:18:36 Wants a sauna without necessarily going to a gym Find a gym near you that happens to have saunas Today I did back and chest I don't really have like a plan I just go that like people like some people like to Really plan out heavily exactly what they're doing I have like a general rotation of what I do Like I'm sort of like getting it's obviously been a week right
Starting point is 01:19:03 But I've my old rotation that I generally did where I did legs, I did cardio, I did back and chest, I did arms, cardio. Like, I really have like, oh, I'm going to do this thing, I'm going to do that thing, I kind of just go. I am the meme of the person who goes to a machine, does like 10 reps, and then goes to the next machine, goes to the next machine, goes to the next machine, goes to the next machine,
Starting point is 01:19:27 just not really heavily planning out exactly what I'm going to be doing, but just doing a bit of everything that kind of just like, makes sense. Like, oh, I worked out this muscle group. I guess I'm going to do this muscle group next and then do this muscle group. And it's not like, oh, I'm going to, I am going to do this specific set of workouts and do this specific set of workout at this weight. As long as you're just progressively overloading, it doesn't really matter. Like, yeah, you're probably going to get more optimal improvements if you plan out a proper workout doing this thing and that thing. But like, at the end of the day, like the main thing, at least the main thing for me, is just getting.
Starting point is 01:20:05 getting back to the gym consistently. That actually is like the core, core thing. Not falling off the wagon again. The main reason why I fell off is my gym was having some issues, we'll say. And also I'd gotten sick and I got pretty sick at a time. And then after that, I fell out of the habit and then I didn't get back to the habit.
Starting point is 01:20:33 then my membership expired and then I didn't renew my membership and then it's like I got to go back and renew the membership but then the gym was like do I want to keep going back to this gym maybe I'll find another gym and then I didn't find another gym
Starting point is 01:20:49 and it had been about a year and I put on about 10 kilos I'll say that's a problem that's a problem we have to resolve that one and we have to fix that problem because I don't want this problem
Starting point is 01:21:01 to get any worse. So we'll see how this goes. We'll see how this goes. I'll keep up my, uh, my schedule. Trying to, I'm trying to go, even if I don't do a workout, I want to be at the gym every day, right? I'm not going to work out every day, but it is nice to do the sauna every day if I have time for it. Like at the very least, at the very least, it is nice to do the sauna every day. That's just me, right? Like, you do, I. I, I don't think it is necessarily a good idea to do like a heavy workout every day
Starting point is 01:21:38 like that especially like you're gonna hurt yourself but the sauna is there a reason not to do the sauna you know what let's look that up am I gonna am I gonna die
Starting point is 01:21:51 is there a reason not to do sauna every day The main reasons to skip days include the risk of severe dehydration That sounds pretty bad Electrolite in balance
Starting point is 01:22:18 Just drink a fucking hydration drink Yeah just drink Drink a hydration drink Who should avoid daily sessions Heart conditions Anyone with unstable blood pressure severe aortic stenosis or a
Starting point is 01:22:37 recent heart attack. Pregnancy. Fair enough. Illness or fever. Fair enough. Alcohol consumption. Drinking before or during a session drastically impairs the body's blood pressure regulation. Fair enough. Don't drink in the sauna. Physical risks of daily use. Profuse sweating causes rapid fluid and mineral loss. Again, hydration drink. Um, overheating, same. in past 20 to 30 minutes, raises cold body temperature to dangerous levels. Blood pressure dips. Extreme heat dilates blood vessels, which can cause dizziness or fainting, especially when standing out quickly.
Starting point is 01:23:19 That's more of an issue of actually being hot. Continuous high heat can dry out the skin or aggravate conditions like eczema. Okay, fair enough. Fair enough. Until I end up dying, we'll do sauna every day. That's, you know, we'll be fine. We'll be fine. But like, it's a matter of like keeping the habit up.
Starting point is 01:23:46 Keeping the habit up, getting out and actually doing so. Like, I talked about this recently. I have been doing, I've been trying to do a lot more to like actually get out, do things, meet people, do the good stuff. I was out last Saturday. I had plans to go. Whoa. Okay. I went to the city.
Starting point is 01:24:05 Went to Adelaide. I caught the train into Adelaide. I went there for my plan. My plan was to go to Niklo buy some new clothes. Now, my plan was also to go to a Japanese restaurant I'd be mean to try out, but the building had no power when I went there. And that was good,
Starting point is 01:24:27 because that building is a big building and it was attached to another place I was going to go as well. I was going to go check out the card store in Adelaide because they also sell anime figures, and various other things there, but they were attached to the same building. The building that had no power. For anyone who knows Adelaide, it is the Coles building in Rundle Mall. I was there on Saturday when they had no power.
Starting point is 01:24:53 And I don't know when they got power back, but I was in the city for a couple of hours, and they had no power the entire time. So that was good. But whilst I was there, I went around and checked out some various other things. I checked out a music store I was just kind of curious I've never been into a music store
Starting point is 01:25:12 Like when I bought the When I bought the guitar I bought that online So I didn't I didn't go to a store Like an actual store to buy it And I don't know I was curious
Starting point is 01:25:29 I was like hey What is in a guitar store What is in a music store Turns out instruments Wow, who would have guessed? Turns out also some very fucking expensive guitars. Way more than I have any interest in paying, because here's the thing. I'm not at a state where a good guitar would sound good, so there's no point buying a good guitar.
Starting point is 01:25:56 Cheap, solid guitar is totally fine for me. I don't know if I've ever, like, shown it. I probably have shown it in the past. Ehh, yeah, fuck. God, always fell off my chair. Um, but yeah, guitar. You also might notice on my desk, there's, like, some guitar picks. Um, I did the thing that a lot of people do, which is go and buy a bunch of random, like, assortment guitar picks.
Starting point is 01:26:29 And then, um, I have a bunch of guitar picks now. I, do I have a, actually know, do I have a noise game? on this? I actually don't know. That might have sound terrible. That probably, uh, we have compressor, we have a noise, maybe there's a noise go, it's fine. I'll turn the noise gate off for now. We'll do that one more time. Let, let me know in the comments if this sounds terrible. Besides, maybe a singer string. Um, but I do have a, yeah, anyway, here's the guitar. That's why I brought it over. Here's the guitar. It's blue. It's also got a bunch of finger marks on it and probably some probably needs a bit of a wipe down still.
Starting point is 01:27:13 Especially from when it was sitting sitting there for a while with no one playing it. But I have, I have, these are just like the random guitar picks that I tried and didn't like. I also have others in here. This is my actual, the actual ones that are not. That, the actual set of ones
Starting point is 01:27:33 I would actually see myself using. The ones that I'm actually using, though, are these ones down here. the uh the the the the the little jazz picks um there you go they're much small than a regular regular guitar pick i i okay we're not gonna we're not gonna go deep down the the um the tangent of guitar picks but i was i was gaslit into buying um some jazz threes and now that i have them uh that was That was a very rough G-cord. Now that I have them,
Starting point is 01:28:09 um, that's not Twitter. Um, I, I, I, I, I, I bought jazz picks.
Starting point is 01:28:19 Like, let's try these jazz picks out. I was like, oh, let's buy it, let's get the Tortex, the, uh,
Starting point is 01:28:24 the Tortex ones. I also have some, um, old-text ones as well. Um, these are like much harder picks. Um, yeah,
Starting point is 01:28:34 yeah. Um, one of the things I heard people say is when you get a when you go from a regular size pick to a jazz pick it feels like playing with a credit card if you go to a regular pick
Starting point is 01:28:50 and it kind of does it kind of actually does I do have still I do still have regular picks in here as well like regular regular size picks these are what is this one actually the main ones I would have been using were the point
Starting point is 01:29:05 the point 73 Ernie balls the Torex the Ernie Ball oranges. They just felt nicer in my hands than the Dunlop ones. I do have the Dunlop. 0.73s here as well. And I have some celluloid ones and various other ones here. This is a nylon pick.
Starting point is 01:29:29 This is terrible. I don't know why anyone would use this thing. It like, honestly, I don't see his thing, right? Different guitar picks do technically sound different. However, I don't have the ear for it. So my criteria for a guitar pick is, does it feel pleasant to hold? And does it have as much flex as I want? Technically, different picks might be better for different styles of music.
Starting point is 01:29:59 Again, I'm terrible, so it actually doesn't matter because I'm terrible. So any pick that I use is going to produce something that sounds. terrible, but we can get better, we can improve, and that's what I've been doing. So pretty much every day, I have been playing the, I have been playing the guitar, the, I have been playing the guitar, there we go, there's words, I can say words, um, been going through Marty Music's, um, Marty Music's core tutorials, uh, I'm at a point now where it's slowly starting to sound like music. I'm starting to get to a point where swapping between chords is not sounding entirely terrible,
Starting point is 01:30:45 where I can actually swap between them in a reasonable length of time, where it's very close to being at the point where, at least for a slower song, it's almost playable. Now, I've not been going like super hard every single day. Otherwise, I'm probably, you know, if you spend multiple hours every day, you'll probably improve much faster. But every day I've been doing like 20 minutes here and there, especially when I'm watching some anime. I've also been just like, you know, doing my, doing some chords, just messing with chord shapes, doing some little exercises to independently move my fingers, various things like that. But I don't know, maybe you'll see me post a cover of the free software song at some.
Starting point is 01:31:34 point. Because the free software song, I think it's like three chords. Free software song. Someone has tabs for it. Yeah, we have some, we have some tabs here. There's like various different, there's various different versions because I don't think there's ever like any, there was never like any like properly written down version. Yeah, there's like a four-quare-
Starting point is 01:32:07 version here, G, C, G7. The only problem here is the F barcode. Not done one of those yet. We'll see how that one. We'll see how that one goes. Considering I can't imagine Stormon is actually, judging by the lyrics. If anyone who's never heard the free software song,
Starting point is 01:32:28 let me just read the lyrics to you. Join us now and share the software. You'll be free. Hackers, you'll be free Join us now and share the software You'll be free Hatters, you'll be free Horders can get piles of money
Starting point is 01:32:49 That is true Hackers, that is true But they cannot help their neighbours That's not good Hackers, that's not good When we have enough free software At our call Hackers, add our call
Starting point is 01:33:02 We'll kick out those dirty licenses Evermore Hackers, ever more Join us now and share the software. You'll be free. Hackers, you'll be free. Join us now and share the software. You'll be free.
Starting point is 01:33:18 Hackers, you'll be free. So, you know, the musical mastermind of Stallman doesn't need to write down how the song should be played because I think the first... I don't know if it was the first time, but certainly the most known time that he played it. He did the song.
Starting point is 01:33:42 A free... I use the word play very loosely. Um, free software song. This is from 19 years ago. Here we go. It's also in... So, if they...
Starting point is 01:33:58 Join us now and share the software. You'll be free hackers. You'll be... Free Join us now and share the software You'll be free Hackers, you'll be free Hoarders can get piles of money
Starting point is 01:34:39 That is true Hackers, that is true But they cannot help their neighbors That's not good Hackers, that's not good free software. Hatters at our call We'll kick out those dirty licenses Evermore, hackers and...
Starting point is 01:35:18 Anyway, that's gotten the point across. Lyrical mastermind, the musical mastermind of Richard Sturman cannot be contained by simple tabs, by simple guitar chords. However, there are various versions of the free software song. Uh, what is this cover here? There's a random cover I saw. Is he playing this on?
Starting point is 01:35:50 Oh. Oh my God, he's got... He's going ball with it. Wait, he's got a... What is he got a cave-on for the free software song? Join us now and share the software you... Okay, okay, I love that, I love that. Anyway, who knows?
Starting point is 01:36:17 Maybe, maybe I'll have my own version of the free software song. He's also done it with like, is this like an orchestra? Yeah, there's another fellow here with here. Let me see this. Okay, well, I guess a band, more like. And he's still doing the clapping. Somehow it sounds worse. I don't know how he's managed that one.
Starting point is 01:36:48 I don't know, guitar is fun. Guitar is fun. And I have been, I have been considering, considering buying an electric at some point. We'll see about that. We'll certainly see about that. I'm happy with my artist acoustic right now, but, you know, you know,
Starting point is 01:37:08 I'd like an electric at some point. I don't know what I'm going to get. Who knows? who knows maybe a Yamaha Pacifica or something something not overly expensive anyway I don't know what I'm talking about guitar still we got like very side tangented there
Starting point is 01:37:25 I'd actually know if there's really much else to even cover I thought I had more topics on the list but it turns out that some of the topics I had written down here were actually like one topic as three separate lines like three separate like ways of writing the same thing. I've got Valve Linux, Lepton and Fex, and
Starting point is 01:37:50 Waderoid as three separate entries. Those aren't three separate entries. What the fuck was I doing? Then I've also got um, got another one here. I've fucking lost. It doesn't matter. Anyway. Anyway, anyway. Um, oh, actually did see this the other day. A video editor by the name of Blick. I'll, I guess I'll play the video. Hey friends, Blick is now officially out in open beta. The main reason I care about it is there is a Linux version coming sometime eventually.
Starting point is 01:38:30 For the last 10 months, we have been absolutely cooking, working on an editing suite that editors actually would enjoy using. You can right now go to the website, download the free demo, see the program open. immediately when you click it and experience the smoothest and snappiest timeline you done ever felt. We are super mega excited to finally get this thing into your hands and we can't wait to see what you make with it. Come show it off on the Discord. We are on there constantly and we would love to hear what you think. Blick is in active early beta development. You can just come talk to us. Let us know any issues you encounter so we can make this the best editing suite. There has ever
Starting point is 01:39:16 been. That's enough rambling though. Go to the website. Get yourself a copy of Blick and enjoy editing again. Whilst it is proprietary, and I, look, I like, I wouldn't say I like, I use Caden Live. I wouldn't say I'm a big fan of Caden Live. Caden Live has had a number of really, really annoying issues for a really really long time. It's had performance issues. I have this issue where it like changes the color grading on my video every single
Starting point is 01:39:57 time I add an image overlay. It's not very fast. This is written... I don't know why. They decide to write this in Odin for some reason. It's, at least from everything we've seen so far, it is incredibly snappy. And also, this is actually really, really cool.
Starting point is 01:40:16 This is actually a really cool part of it. Where is it? Buy. They have a license. You just buy. You just buy the license. You just buy the license. Now, it is a license you buy for two years of updates.
Starting point is 01:40:36 But you own that version. You own the license of that version until, you know, the end of time. You know, the way that Adobe used to work, where you could buy CS5 and you can just keep using CS5 or CS6 or anything like that. And then they migrated to the cloud bullshit where it's like, oh, you've got to have your bullshit subscription. That's annoying. I don't like that.
Starting point is 01:41:06 So it is 90 euros, which obviously, you know, if this is just a casual thing, I get it, it's like a... It can be a big deal. However, however, for what I do, It doesn't really matter. Now, Linux support is supposed to come in... Oh, wait. Okay, so...
Starting point is 01:41:34 I don't... Okay, Linux support is set for 1.0 right now. So it might be a while until I actually see this. But I do hope that when it comes, it isn't a good state. I do hope that we actually have another good editor on Linux, because the main problem we have on Linux right now is if you don't use Caden Live, everything else is worse than Caden Live that is open source.
Starting point is 01:42:01 Or you have DaVinci. And DaVinci is... Dvinci's not bad, it's just DaVinci is a lot. DaVinci is a very... Very, very complicated editor, and there is a lot to it. A lot of stuff, frankly, I don't need. But everything I've seen with how Blick works, it seems like it
Starting point is 01:42:27 it honestly it seems like it's at a at a level where it is it makes sense and maybe it gets more complicated as it and like harder to manage as more stuff gets added to it who knows but everything I've seen about it it seems like I personally would vibe with it
Starting point is 01:42:53 also it's written in Odin which is neat. Do I care what my video editor is written in as long as it's fast? No, not really. Not really at all. But, I don't know, it's cool to see stuff. Cool to see stuff using Oden. Hmm.
Starting point is 01:43:14 I didn't really have much to say on that. I just wanted to briefly mention it. I know a lot of people have been really, really talking about this on Twitter. So, I don't know. You know what? Just a random... I just had Twitter open for a second. Just a random, um, Kingdom Hearts thing. So, this is the same.
Starting point is 01:43:35 I think this is from the Remind DLC. Um, yeah, this is when Sora is like changing, changing what happened. Um, but then it just like randomly shows Ethema. And that's cool, right? And that's gonna matter in the next part of the series. The main problem is that's a character from a mobile game that a lot of people didn't play. So it's like, here's this, here's this big reveal. Like, oh my God, here's this character that's been foreshadowed for years and years and years from this other game that you didn't play.
Starting point is 01:44:12 King of Hearts through his hand in such a messy way, man. It really, really was. Anyway, anyway, um, I guess briefly rambling off some other little things. There is, where did it go? Oh, I guess we can do this first. I fucking lost the link some out. It's in here somewhere. Oh, there is.
Starting point is 01:44:34 Okay, I found it. Keychron. Keychron announces first open source firmware for gaming mice. So, open source firmware for keyboards is a pretty standard thing. But mice... Okay, I guess standard in the boutique, high-end keyboard market. Mice, not so much. this however
Starting point is 01:44:59 this changes things and if this can usher in a period of mice that have open firmware all of a sudden all of the problems of configuring those mice goes away on Linux
Starting point is 01:45:17 there's no problem configuring QMK keyboards on Linux I would be more than happy to switch to a mouse that is a what is they call it ZD ZGM. Yeah, ZGM. I would be more than happy to switch to a ZGM mouse if this becomes something where there's just open tooling around it and we just don't have to worry about it.
Starting point is 01:45:41 I don't know how it's going to go. It's going to be like one mouse initially. But things started with one keyboard initially, so why can't it start with one mouse? I'll keep an eye on that one. Another thing I'll keep an eye on is, whilst it's not exposing any new functionality, there is something cool happening in KDE. A little tool called K Gamma, where you can go and color correct your monitors however you feel like doing so.
Starting point is 01:46:15 But it does it even better than is done on the X-11 side, because you can do this independently for each monitor. Now, the UX here is very basic. It's literally just the most basic KDE UI, basic UI with KDE widgets, but it is a UI nonetheless. But you can independently configure your different monitors. Also, it works with night light rather than fighting over the same settings, K-Win will blend the two sets on top of each other. So if you want to go and mess with the coloring of a monitor,
Starting point is 01:46:55 and then still use nightlight, you can. And it's not like they're going to just like flicker back and forth or weirdly break or the coloring is going to be forgotten when you have the nightlight enabled. It's just going to work together. And this is functionality that was already there. But now it makes it easily accessible. And that's cool.
Starting point is 01:47:17 Also, apparently it gets applied initially on K-Win startup, which is also very, very cool. I don't personally use the nightlight feature right now, mainly because I edit thumbnails at night sometimes, and well, I want the colours to be correct rather than weird things happening because of my eyes. But even so, it's cool, it's cool. So I think that's as good a point as any to end off the episode. I'm getting hungry, I've not had anything to eat since lunchtime, and it is 8.30 p.m. right now. and I have a I have a pork bowl to make
