Starting point is 00:00:00 Welcome to 10-minute Bible Talks, where we connect the Bible to your life. In the time it takes to get to work. I'm Tanya Wilmuth. I wish I could say that the structure I saw in Barcelona, the one that has been under construction for 140 years, was so breathtaking that I got sentimental or emotional, maybe even a little teary-eyed. But that wasn't the case, because the Sagrada Familia was almost completely surrounded by fences, barriers, and scaffolding. and the regards posted at the entrances with signs and banners leading the way to the queue. But such is the point of this story, where the real importance is what's on the inside, and how much more important that is than attractiveness, poise, and flattering external facades.
Starting point is 00:00:50 Now, if you were listening a few weeks ago, you heard me talking about a trip to Barcelona, and the Sagrada Familia is probably the most well-known work of art in Barcelona, if not at the top of list for all of Europe. The name might sound unusual if you're not familiar with it, but the reality of the Sagrada is overwhelming. The Sagrada Familia is a Catholic church that has been under construction for more than 140 years. It began as an act of penance funded by offerings of ordinary people, and today it's supported by donations from around the world. Anthony Gowdy, the architect, devoted 43 years of his life to this project. And even now, even though he died in 1926, generations later, they're still.
Starting point is 00:01:31 building. And when it's finished, hopefully around 2030, it will have 18 towers, 12 for the apostles, four for the evangelist, Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John, one for Mary and the tallest for Jesus Christ. I got to go up in the Tower of the Virgin Mary. Gowdy called it a Bible in stone. Every detail in the chapel is designed to tell the biblical story, from Christ's birth to the resurrection and the ascension. So when you walk inside, you're immediately immersed in color. There's still. stained glass windows, and they're supposed to cast deep blues and reds in the morning that shift over to golden cues in the afternoon. I was there in the afternoon. And this is all designed to show the transcendence and the glory of the Lord as his presence passes through. The columns soar like trees up to the
Starting point is 00:02:17 ceiling and make you feel like you're in a forest, kind of like back to the creation story. It's intended to make you feel small, but in a good way, and you can't help but look up. And that was Gowdy's vision, a building that would turn people's eyes heavenward. But here's what struck me. As incredible as this place is, and as much as it points to God, the Sagrada Familia, like every human achievement, well, it's still under construction. And it will never compare to the things that God has created. It will also never compare to a temple that was built thousands of years earlier, Solomon's temple in Jerusalem. And I want to tell you why. But to do that, we need to go back to
Starting point is 00:02:56 First Kings chapter 6. This is where Solomon is building the new temple in Jerusalem. And Solomon's temple wasn't just beautiful. It was deeply symbolic. It told a world something profound, that the living God had chosen to dwell among his people. So imagine it. 90 feet long, 30 feet wide, and 45 feet high. That's actually not massive by today's standards. But its inner beauty was unmatched. The inside was overlaid with pure gold. The walls were carved with palm trees, share-bable. and flowers. The Holy of Holy is the place where the Ark of the Covenant rested, where God's presence dwelt, was shimmered with the best materials they had, and they were all dedicated to the Lord. Now, like I said, at the center was the Holy of Holies, and this is where you could find the Ark of the covenant, and this was a visible sign that God's presence and God's glory were among his people. And when the temple was dedicated, God showed up. Later in 1st King 8, it says the priest couldn't even stand to minister because the glory of the Lord filled the temple like a cloud. All right, let's just
Starting point is 00:04:03 hang on for a second. Why is that so important? Well, because it meant this. God is here. God is with us. God is our strength and our identity. So for Israel, this temple wasn't just architecture. It was their anger. I mean, these people had been enslaved in Egypt. They had been wandering through the wilderness. They had been in battle. But this temple and God coming to dwell there, told the surrounding nations, our God is real, and he lives among us. And this validated them. It not only gave them political credibility, but spiritual confidence. Of course, the latter being far more important. But that temple was destroyed. And here's where the story turns and where it impacts our lives through the bloodshed of Jesus Christ. In the New Testament, Paul writes in
Starting point is 00:04:53 1st Corinthians 619, do you not know that your bodies are temple? of the Holy Spirit, who is in you, whom you have received from God, we have to let that sink in. God's presence doesn't dwell in stone walls anymore, not in Jerusalem, not in the most magnificent cathedral on earth. He dwells in you. What Jesus Christ said would happen, actually happened. And if you belong to Christ, you are the temple. And the same glory that filled Solomon's temple now lives in you through the Holy Spirit. And everywhere you go, you carry his presence. So what does that mean for you and for your everyday life? What does that mean for your identity?
Starting point is 00:05:34 Well, Solomon's temple was, it was spectacular on the outside, but it was far more glorious on the inside, far more beautiful, far more ornamental, and far more precious on the inside, where God's presence dwelt. And the same is true for you. God is the master architect, but he invites you to cooperate with him as he shapes your inner life. Jesus said in John 15, 5, I am the vine and you are the branches. If you remain in me and I and you, you will bear much fruit. That connection is what makes you truly beautiful. Not your image online, not your resume, not what others say about you at school or work, not what skincare products you use, not what routine you use for your hair, not what you look like and sound like on your social media platforms. What matters is what God sees, your heart, your care, character, and your holiness. 1st, Samuel 16.7 reminds us, people look at the outward appearance,
Starting point is 00:06:33 but the Lord looks at the heart. And God wants to make you radiant on the inside, filled with love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control. So here's the question. Are you more focused on your outside facade than on the inner life God is shaping? And if you're raising kids or if you're influencing anyone or mentoring anyone, what message are you sending about worth? The world says it comes from appearance or performance, but God says it comes from his presence within you. If the next generation can truly believe that, they won't spend their lives chasing applause. They will live as living temples, carrying God's presence everywhere they go. Which brings us back to you.
Starting point is 00:07:23 Solomon's temple declared to the world, God is with Israel. Today, that message hasn't changed, but now it's in you. God uses you. Your life is the declaration. God is with you. God wants to be with you. So ask yourself, when people encounter you, do they sense God's presence? When you walk into a room, does anything about you make them wonder about him? You are a living temple. Wherever you go, God goes. Let the world see his glory through you.
