Starting point is 00:00:00 Welcome to 10-minute Bible Talks, where we connect the Bible to your life. And the time it takes to get to work. I'm Jensen Holt McNair. In all good movies, there comes a point when the two main adversaries meet and have a final showdown. Usually it feels kind of like a relief when they finally meet. Despite what may be a dangerous confrontation, the whole movie has built up to this moment. Like there's been skirmishes, chance meetings. but in each one they've held back.
Starting point is 00:00:35 There's no clear winner yet, no resolution, just tensions rising, anger, boiling, and then you reach the breaking point. Now today, in Mark 14, verses 53 to 65, we reach that moment for Jesus and the religious leaders. They've come head to head before. They've confronted one another. They've verbally sparred up into this point. But today, Jesus is being brought before the Sanhedron, the just of the judge. body of the religious leaders before the high priest to stand trial for all that they believe he's guilty of.
Starting point is 00:01:11 Now, this is the moment in the movie where we expect the triumph of our hero. Jesus to offer one final blow to the Sanhedron, to prove his innocent, to stand justified before them, to shame them for the ways that they've mistreated and harassed him. The crowd, the people will finally realize that he's the hero. he's the king and he will overcome. But this isn't a movie, and that isn't the story that Mark is telling in his gospel. Verse 53, they took Jesus to the high priest and all the chief priests, the elders and the teachers of the law came together. Peter followed him at a distance right into the courtyard of the high priest. There he sat with the guards and warmed himself at the fire.
Starting point is 00:02:00 Okay, so Peter is here, a disciple with his own expectations. He wants to see what happens, wants to watch and see how Jesus overcomes. He knows that Jesus is the Messiah, and he knows that the Messiah is king. He knows that Jesus has to remain victorious. So he comes, he waits, he watches. The chief priests and the whole Sanhedron were looking for evidence against Jesus so that they could put him to death, but they did not find any. Many testified falsely against him, but their statements did not agree. Then some stood up and gave this false testimony against him. We heard him say, I will destroy this temple made with human hands, and in three days will build another, not made with hands. Yet even then their testimony did not agree. Then the high priest stood up before them and
Starting point is 00:02:54 asked Jesus, are you not going to answer? What is this testimony? that these men are bringing against you. But Jesus remained silent and gave no answer. So the Sanhedron tries and fails to pin Jesus down, to find him guilty. Despite testimony, it proves to be false, to not line up. The court case is going south for the bad guys. You can imagine Peter's building excitement as he listens, the building expectation of Jesus's vindication, a vindication that does not come this night. Again, The high priest asked him, are you the Messiah, the son of the blessed one? I am, said Jesus, and you will see the son of man sitting at the right hand of the mighty one,
Starting point is 00:03:40 and coming on the clouds of heaven. The high priest tore his clothes. Why do we need any more witnesses? he asked. You have heard the blasphemy. What do you think? They all condemned him as worthy of death. Then some began to spit at him. They blindfolded him, struck him, struck him with their fists and said, prophesy, and the guards took him and beat him. Despite the false testimony, despite the expectations, Jesus is condemned. He spat on, not exalted, struck, not vindicated, beaten, not the overcomer. You see, this is the most blatant of Jesus's admissions to being the Messiah. He boldly proclaims, I am. And then he further doubles. down, he calls himself the son of man. He tells them that one day he will sit at the right hand of God,
Starting point is 00:04:35 that he will come on the clouds of heaven. It's a lofty claim for man to make, even if you don't know what Jesus is referencing. But the Sanhedron knows. They're religious scholars. They tear their clothes and call for his death because they understand that this man before them is claiming to be the one who is prophesied about in Daniel 7. And behold, with the clouds of there came one like a son of man, and he came to the ancient of days and was presented before him, and to him was given dominion and glory and a kingdom that all peoples, nations, and languages should serve him. His dominion is an everlasting dominion, which shall not pass away, and his kingdom, one that shall not be destroyed. See, Jesus is claiming to be the king, the Messiah, the one who
Starting point is 00:05:28 God has given total dominion to. In essence, he is saying, you have me here on trial, but I am the one who will rule, who will judge, who will be given dominion. This son of man prophesied throughout the Old Testament is the son of God. Jesus is claiming to be divine. It is blasphemy. It is offensive. It cannot be true. So they'll prove it. They will exert their power over Jesus, bind him, spit on him, beat him, mock him, sentence him to death. Jesus can say what he wants, but the high priest, the Sanhedron, they will win this fight. It's a poor ending for our climactic scene. It's not the kind of ending you'd write if you were writing a good story.
Starting point is 00:06:13 But we have to remember that Mark isn't writing an award-winning film. That's not the story that he's trying to tell. See, throughout the gospel of Mark, Mark has been highlighting Jesus as the fulfillment of the prophesied Messiah, the Son of God, and he pays specific attention to the ways that the Messiah's misunderstood, the way that Jesus wasn't the physical triumphant king of their imagination, but the suffering servant. And so knowing the full story, we know that while this showdown doesn't end like we would expect, that doesn't mean that Jesus isn't victorious in the end. You see, in Mark's gospel, we see clearly that Jesus ushers in his king.
Starting point is 00:06:55 in a way that is radically different than anything the world would ever expect. Power replaced with humility. Exultation replaced with humiliation. Domination replaced with submission. Always for the sake of the other, the sake of the mission, the sake of the glorification of the kingdom of God and the redemption of all creation. See, this final showdown leads to the crucifixion and there could be no other way. Let's go back to Peter, watching as his expectations are shattered, wondering if he was wrong, how could this be? Despite Jesus's warnings, despite Jesus telling them that while it may look like defeat, he will rise again, we know by what comes next in Peter's story, his denial of Jesus, that he's afraid, that he's disbelieving, that he thinks this is the end, the final defeat,
Starting point is 00:07:49 the hero does not come out on top. It's not what Peter wanted, it's not what he expected, that's a story of Mark, the shocking revelation that God's plan does not look the way people expected. That our salvation, our rescue, the redemption of all creation is a divine mystery. It's the unexpected story that God has been writing throughout history. It's the same story that you and I find ourselves in today. See, it's tempting to wish for the world's story, the epic story of power, to want to be the ones on top, to bring Jesus' kingdom into this world in a powerful and epic way to feel vindicated. But if Jesus' story teaches us anything, it is that our victory comes through resurrection.
Starting point is 00:08:41 That is our future hope. And until that day, we are called to follow in the footsteps of our Savior, our king, the suffering servant, the one who chose humility over power, the one who accepted humility. who endured suffering, who turned the other cheek, who held fast to the truth, who loved, deeply, who sacrificed his energy and well-being for the sake of the weak and marginalized, who spoke up for the vulnerable when it made him unpopular and who unwaveringly followed God's plan, even when it didn't make sense, even when it looked like defeat, even when it asked everything of him. That is the way of Jesus. That is the story that you, you and I are called to live in and it is worth it. Because even when it looks like defeat to the
Starting point is 00:09:30 world, it is through the cross that victory is found. Will you follow Jesus today? Will you live inside of his story, inside of his plan for your life? God, I ask that you would give a strength today to follow you into the fire, into suffering, that we would be the kind of people that trust you even when it doesn't make sense, that we would be willing to choose humility over power, submission over domination, and humiliation over our own exaltation for the sake of your glory, of building your kingdom, because we know we believe with everything that it is worth it. That's the story you're writing. It's the one that is good and right and true. Give us the strength to hold fast.
Starting point is 00:10:22 to truth even when it costs us. God, we love you, draw near to us, sustain us, make us into cross-shaped people of God. May we follow the ways of Jesus all the days of our lives until we see him in our resurrected bodies. Amen. Come Lord Jesus.
