Helen and Yvette, welcome to Reasons to Be Joyful.
Thank you.
Now, I know both of you.
Helen, we've met on many occasions.
And I've seen you singing on stage.
I love me.
You know I'm obsessed with musicals.
Obviously, call the midwife we're walt.
We'll talk about all of that.
And we're going to talk musical theatre with both of you.
Just please sing a little bit of musical theatre together right now.
You know, I love musical.
Are you joking?
Just one line.
We haven't sung together for years.
Yes.
Oh, we did it at your one.
wedding actually, but we were quite drunk. Yeah, but that was more opera. That was like
Nessendorma. Yeah. Did you do Nessendorma? At your opera? At my wedding, we did. No.
Yeah. It was beautiful. It was so perfect. And all my friends popped up and we all sang together.
Like, no one knew it was a surprise. Oh, but you planned it you two. Yeah, we planned it.
Well, we said that we weren't going to sing. We were going to let our friends sing and then we were like,
actually, no, we can't. So we just ended up joining in. But that was a funerone is in as well.
also.
Oh my word.
How?
So you, opera.
Well, no, I mean, look, no, not classically trained.
She's got very strong then.
Because we get very expensive.
It's very different.
In musical theatre, it's a very different technique to opera.
And opera singers can get very cagey and sort of a bit.
You're a musical theatre.
You're a musical theatre singer.
I am not classically trained.
We can sing opera in a way that a voice can sing opera.
Right.
Okay.
And I think I have more of a legit sort of classical sound, I suppose,
although the show I'm doing at the moment is Cole Porter,
so I'm having to get rid of all the vibrato, which is killing me.
But, yeah, I mean, we can.
Musical theatre does lean itself to operate, you know,
there are operatic type.
To like operettos.
Yes, but to me that as somebody is a super fan,
I love that you're a super fan.
Oh, my, I am obsessed with musical.
What's your favourite one?
Okay, I think the greatest musical is West Side.
story. Oh yes, absolutely.
But one of my favour is chorus line.
Oh my gosh, me too. No.
No, I'm not kidding when I was a kid. I watched that film over.
But I learned nothing, nothing. Every day for a week, we were trying to feel the motion.
Do you remember that? Oh, yes. And I auditioned to get to drama school with that.
Did you? And it was my one piece because I was from Perth and we didn't have shows come to
us. We didn't have any, so I could just, they did a song. Is that your audition song for
drama school? Yeah. Nothing from a chorus line. And I just had.
I don't know why I adore a chorus line so much.
I used to sing nothing.
When I was at Tring, when I was at Art Said, that was my audition song as well.
It's such a classic.
And it's just lovely exciting.
Mine was, well, give me somebody to dance for.
Yes, so that's the three of us chorus line.
We could do it now.
We could do it now.
Five, six, seven.
Have you done a musical?
Did you do Chicago?
Yeah.
I was Mama.
So I didn't have to dance.
Thank the Lord.
Did you love it?
Yes.
Musical theatre.
I mean, I really, really believe that musical theatre lifts people in a different...
I love live.
I love live music.
I love live theatre.
I love straight plays.
I love musicals.
But there is something about a musical that just lifts you to a different level.
I agree.
And I think I did a lot of ballet when I was younger.
And now when I go back and watch the ballet, I really appreciate it and I adore watching it.
But I miss words, be it spoken or song.
I really, I miss that element of it within dance.
And we should say that we met on a musical quite a few years ago,
woman in white, which is an Andrew Lloyd-Weber musical,
which was at the Palace Theatre in Soho.
I mean, that's a while ago.
It was a long time ago.
Yeah.
Over 20 years.
Trevor Nunn directing, Andrew Lloyd-Weber.
It was my first job, your first job over from Australia.
Yeah.
So it was a real first.
And that's where, you know.
We had Michael Crawford, Maria Freeman, David Zipple.
Yeah.
Is it, wrote the lyricist?
an incredible team.
And to watch, and a great Wilkie Collins novel,
Women in White.
To see all that.
Do you remember we used to sing it all the days?
I love that.
So it's 20 years that you've been friends.
Yeah, pretty much.
Have you not done another musical together?
No.
No.
We've sung together.
We've done workshops.
We did the Phantom Workshop.
Oh, yeah.
Love Never Dies.
We did that one together.
Oh, yeah.
With Gareth Valentine.
We did the arrangements for high society that I'm in at the moment.
And Gareth Valentine, who did.
to Chicago when I was in Chicago.
Yes. Oh my one degree.
He's amazing.
He's so talented that man.
He is talented.
These incredible brains that work in musical theatre.
It's an amazing thing to be able to put all of these elements together and sometimes get successful with it.
I'm being one of the charms.
My agent said a really good thing about musical theatre actors.
She said there is something incredible about the fact that you have a triple thread that you can sing, that you can dance, that you can act.
And, you know, and often sometimes you're not doing any of it and then you're doing all of it.
It's quite incredible.
It's weird, though, how you and I've had this conversation before, how people don't mind a straight actor doing musicals.
But what they can't accept is a musical theatre known person.
I remember when wonderful Bonnie Langford was in EastEnders, everyone was saying to her, oh, you can act.
Hold on.
Yes.
and they did the same to Hannah Waddingham.
Yeah.
And Hannah went, yeah, what do you think we do?
And it's weird how it's that way now.
And the Le Mays film was a classic indication of that
because I think a lot of people that had done Le Miz back in the day
were brought in to do the film, but not the roles that they would have done.
So she played Fontaine, I think, and was incredible at it.
And then she's sort of Head Factory Girl.
Yeah, Hannah was, yeah.
Because Anne Hathaway was the star, of course.
But Anne Hathaway, interestingly, did the workshop for Women in White.
did she?
Yes.
Her mum was a performer on Broadway,
a musical theatre performer.
Yeah.
So she grew up with it.
Or comes back to musical theatre.
Yeah, it does.
Also on Broadway, they don't have that problem.
Musical theatre stars can go with a star in big television shows
and no one questions it.
You know, nobody questions it.
And I don't know why it's like that in England.
It's very funny.
Do you think it's got a bit better?
I think it's getting there.
I think the likes of Hannah Waddingham are changing people's opinions.
I do.
And I think it all depends on...
And Helen, my gorgeous thing.
Seriously, because you are, darling, you really are.
People think of that.
Then they do the, oh, Helen George from Call the Midwife is musical theatre, you know.
And they now accept you as both because you've done everything and I, which is wonderful.
That was my first musical back since, like, back in the day.
Because I think I made a choice because I was always acting was the primary focus for me,
but I love to sing as well.
So that's where the musicals came in.
But it was always about the narrative and the words.
and the intention.
So for me, I did my first musical and then I was, I think I made a conscious
decision not to do musicals.
And I was like, I want to do TV.
I want to do plays.
And that's what I focused on for 15 years.
And then when I was asked to do The King and I, I was like, oh, ah, I haven't sung for so long.
And it was a real learning curve for me.
It was fantastic to be able to lead something like that.
And it's a heavy old text, but it was the text, you know, you have like 16 page
scenes, which are something you get in plays.
but yet with the Roger Hammerstein music on top,
which was incredible.
And then, you know, High Society is very different.
Yes, how is High Society?
It's fun.
I'm having the most amount of fun on stage in my life, I think, that I've had.
Really?
This character has really done something to Helen.
That's quite a thing to say.
Yeah.
It's really freed me up.
In a kind of, Vets always says,
when she came to see me in High Society,
it was like watching her friend after she's had tequila.
And watching the Helen I know that's fun and like let's go and he's crazy and, you know,
you have such a great energy.
And I saw all of that because I think when you did call the midwife,
it was like everyone saw that side to Helen,
but then I had this other side to her that I love.
But you're acting and call the midwurst.
Yeah.
And so you don't get to see that.
Whereas this character really lends itself to that.
And I was like, there's my hell.
I love it.
And do you know what else I love about Helen is that she started.
in Call the Midwife and everyone was like, oh, she's an actor.
And I knew we'd done a musical.
And then the time when it did come to the King and I, everyone's like, wow, she can sing.
And I'm like, yeah, she can sing.
She's freaking incredible.
And I love that you can flip that.
You know, you're saying it's half a musical theatre actors to come in and do straight.
But you did it the other way around.
And you've got the talent to back it up.
And you hid your talent.
But you're still going to do Call the Midwife.
Well, we don't know what's happening with this at the moment.
Because at the moment they're concentrating on.
on the prequel. We're not filming the normal series as we would do. They're focused on that,
but we're looking at coming back to a film format and potentially more series in the future.
That's all I heard. There was going to be a film. I didn't know that was sort of public.
I sort of heard this. It's going to be a film. Well, potentially, I mean, I think that is the plan.
But as yet, I mean, it isn't confirmed. So we'll see. So it's actually a really exciting time as well
because I don't, you know, I've been very incredibly lucky in my career that I've had that stalwart
series running series for 15 years.
I mean, I've been very lucky.
Wow.
But I've worked hard when I'm there, you know, they kind of, you don't, you know, I've,
they still write lovely things for me and, you know, and so I kind of, I've been really
lucky, but I think I, it's the other facets that come into it as well, the sort of like,
I always say you have to be an entrepreneur when you're an actor as well.
You have to always be looking for the next thing.
And it's not about like just working a room or it's nothing as sort of basic and, um,
pretentious as that, it's more than that.
It's about cultivating relationships.
But the awful thing, in the entertainment industry, across the board,
whether it's an artist with their new album, whether it's an actor, musical theatre,
presenter, whatever it is, everyone always says, and I make sure I don't do it,
everyone always says, oh, what are you doing next?
Oh, yes.
We never know, really know.
Because even when you think you're doing something, it could be pulled at the last minute.
You know, there's always this anxiety.
And I think for our personality types, it kind of suits us because, you know, we don't like boredom.
You're a cancer.
I'm a Gemini.
And we like to, you know, fly around and have new experiences.
So it does suit that.
But, you know, it does bring its anxiety.
Of course it does.
It's got kids and so have I.
How old are your kids?
14.
I've got a 14 year old and then two stepdaughters 14 and 16.
Lovely.
Three teenage daughters in the house.
Wow.
Periods.
Periods.
All in time.
Mood, dealing all your heels and your makeup.
And then we're all girls, aren't we?
Yeah.
And I've got a four-year-old and a soon-to-be-nine-year-old.
So you have a, you're not, okay, you've got the same gap between.
I've got two girls, same gap.
Yeah, no, girls.
Yeah, they close, just to warn you, you've been there.
They close the door.
Oh, I love you next morning.
Yeah, what?
Oh, yeah.
Oh, no, I'm going to.
Oh, you've got.
You've got.
The nine-year-old, I think I'm starting.
Well, both of them, they're both quite strong personality.
So I'm like, okay.
I wonder where they get that from.
my father
but we went to see practical magic
with all of our girls yesterday
have you seen it yet?
No.
You've got to.
My girls are obsessed
but they want to go.
It's so good, I cried.
Oh, is it good?
There's the middle bit
which is the little Buffy vampire slurry,
not the best bit,
but the overarching story and tale
and these incredible women
and we were saying
just a moment ago
these women are leading
a big Hollywood film
and all women
over the age of
50, you know, how fantastic that the four leads are them.
Absolutely, which is quite rare, but it's fantastic.
Yeah.
It really is.
So you two, you really are mates, your mystic mates as well.
Why, congratulations on the podcast.
Thank you.
It's like you've come out from under a rock and said, hey, this is how we feel and we're
not going, we don't care what you think.
We're going to share this.
And a lot of people all feel the same thing.
So for people who don't know about the, the, you can.
coming out.
We've come out.
You have.
Yeah.
It does feel like that.
Maybe that's why I'm feeling so free at the moment as well, because I feel like I've just
gone.
This is who we are.
Yeah, I think you're so used to not telling the press things and being worried that things
are going to be changed.
You know, the Daily Mail are going to write something awful about your or whoever,
another paper possibly as well.
And I've been so used to not talking about my personal life and not doing the wrong thing.
I'm like, you know, you're like, you're like told to be a good girl and not speak out.
And then I think we've always had this, one of our big connections in our friendship has been that vets introduced me to tarot cards when we were at the palace theater doing Women in White and Rooms.
She's got her runes, which she pulls and stuff.
And we started getting into mysticism together.
And really it's been that journey of 20 years of tarot readings.
And vets has still got the tapes from when we first met.
Oh, my word.
I don't know if you remember mysteries in Covent Garden.
Yeah, yeah, in-garden garden.
Yeah, and we do all our reads in-between shows.
We wouldn't eat.
We'd just do a read.
Yeah, we didn't spend money on food.
We spent more clothes.
It was like tarot-reads, you know.
And we played one of them last week, and it was hysterical,
realizing that it was 2009.
2009, yeah.
And where you were in your life, between jobs, between boyfriends,
and some of the things that she came out with,
and she predicted the year that you were going to have your daughter,
which was correct and, you know, all of these things.
So it's been wonderful to get to hang out with your genuine best mate
and talk about what we love.
So you are 100% believers,
or are you lovers of it and you believe,
but it might not always be right?
What's your level?
Because I think there are levels of people who believe.
I think we're somewhere in between all of that.
I think it depends on the reader as well,
but we've definitely had consistently amazing experiences
with tarot readers and mediums,
that you can't help but go,
there has to be something in this.
And I think this podcast is leading us on a journey of discovery of different things, crystals,
which I didn't know anything about how to read your own tarot cards, runes,
and also telepathy, spirituality, mediumship, you know.
Meditation.
Meditation.
All of that.
But I do think we do pick up when something, as I said in the very beginning of this,
you're going to have fakes.
You're going to have people that aren't, you know, that are trying to sell some snake oil.
And we pick up on that.
You know, we just talked about that in the podcast.
We just did the.
this morning about I went to something and I was like, I just feel like it was a money-making
scheme and I don't like that.
I totally agree with you.
So we are here to go, that doesn't feel right.
And because I say in any religion, you're going to have fakes and, you know, we're humans.
So in any kind of belief, belief, there are going to be people that are going to try and
rip you off.
Rip you off.
Yeah.
I want to share something that years ago, this woman came up to me, she said, I look,
Gabby, I need to give you, I need to give you, I have to have this feeling. You're going to work
with Paula Grady. You're going to work with Terry Wogan. You're going to work with Chris Evans.
And I said, oh, thank you very much. That's lovely. I actually work with all of them right now.
She said, really, I didn't know. I've never seen. I didn't know who you were. And I said,
how did you know my name was Gabby? I just felt. And it was one of those people. I hate that.
Yes, and I thought, don't do that because I absolutely believe that people can believe in what helps them.
But I'm a believer.
I am a believer.
But I'm not going to push it on to somebody else.
But I love that you're investigating it.
And when I said that to her, she sort of got a bit sniffing.
She walked away.
And I thought, no, there'll be so many people that you might say that to who will want to believe it.
And we sometimes, we joke about this.
We go to readings and if it's all really amazing.
we go, oh, she was amazing because she said this is going to happen.
And even if it doesn't happen, we go, but she was still amazing.
And then maybe we go, yeah, but babe, none of it's happened.
Yeah.
Oh, yeah, maybe she wasn't.
Maybe I just wanted to hear that.
Our classic one is with a lady who we don't mention her name because she became F off this lady.
Because there was a woman that we were speaking to quite a lot.
And she was very recommended by another friend David of mine.
And she said to me, I was dating someone at the time.
I split up with the father and my children
and I was dating someone
and she said,
oh my God, it's him.
He's the love of your life.
And Gabby, I'm not joking,
this is the weirdest dating story,
but this beautiful, lovely man
got diagnosed with leukemia
two weeks later,
and within three months he passed away.
But she didn't say any of that.
She didn't say any of that.
She was like, you've met him.
But what's interesting is now,
even though we've told,
in our heads, she's a bad reader,
he does come, no matter what medium I see,
it's always this man that I dated that comes through
and they say, oh, it's a man that you were with this man.
And he's always there.
So weirdly, there's a part of that read which kind of was right
because I do feel I didn't ever believe in angels
or spirits or guardians.
You didn't?
Well, I didn't know because I just thought it was,
I'm quite cynical about things like that.
And I was brought up in an atheist household.
So I was never surrounded by, you know,
that was just silly codswad wallop.
Can I say about the beautiful daughter?
Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
That's beautiful daughter, Leela, which her name means,
play of the universe, which is such a beautiful name, isn't it?
Because everything's a play, isn't it?
That's so lovely.
In life.
None of us, we're just playing.
Leela, what a beautiful name.
Yeah.
But she was, do you want to?
This is your tale because she was diagnosed with leukemia.
She had leukemia when she was four.
So she got diagnosed at four, and we went through like three years.
I just stopped everything, and we just treated her, and she eventually rang the bell.
And she was one of the lucky ones that got out.
So I went through all of that with Helen, obviously by my side.
And so when this gentleman got diagnosed with leukemia,
it was just like, she came to me and I was like, oh my gosh, here we go again.
It's when people understand.
Yeah, you're your friends.
Yeah.
But there's also that dreadful thing.
I presume you've both gone through it, which I always urge everybody who goes through
anything like this, not to go up to somebody and go, do the head tilt.
There's nothing worse than that.
Oh.
Yeah, yeah, no.
And anyone, you know, when Leela got diagnosed, the people crying, like, she was incredible.
She was just like, boom, boom, boom, right.
Here's some, you're very practical.
Here's some food.
I'm not surprised.
I'm not surprised.
And, you know, when people start, oh, my God, that's terrible.
You just go, that is not what I mean.
Did people do that?
Yeah.
I presume the same thing with your partner who very sadly passed, that that, that feeling that people don't know what to say, do they.
The people actually don't know.
So they do do the head tilt.
They do do the crying, whatever it is, because they don't know what to say.
They don't know how to deal with it.
No, and I think it's very, they were obviously incredibly different situations, but with me,
it was more of a like, what?
Because we'd only been dating for a few months, so there was no place for my grief to go.
Yes, of course.
Because he wasn't mine to grieve.
But it's not, you're still going through it.
Yeah.
And he was very young.
Yes.
And you were going through it as a mother.
separately, I suppose.
Yes.
But you were going through it as a mother and it was a continued support.
You were there supporting.
You can't compare.
There's no, you can't compare, you had this, you had this.
You both went through something that was, you know, grieving those three years.
Things that happen to other people.
Do you know what I mean?
It's those sorts of things that you think, well, this doesn't happen to us.
This happens to other people.
Yeah, yeah.
That's life, though.
What has captivated you?
I'm going to ask each of you separately.
what's captivated you about it?
Is it just tarot or do you also feel spirits?
Because you're saying you feel your late partner there in a spiritual way?
I think taro was definitely the way in for me as a young teenager.
That was my way in.
And then things just came to me, runes and then the spirituality.
And then I studied, I learned transcendental meditation.
And then I started reading the bug for Gita and learning about Ayurvedic things.
So I think it's a whole kind of all of it has now come to be doing this podcast.
I think the biggest thing that surprised me is the mediumship, the spirits, the ability now
to really understand that you can access those spirits and you can feel their presence.
How wonderful.
Yeah, it really is.
And I really feel supported by the universe more.
You said last week that you went to see a medium and your late father came.
Yeah, my dad comes a lot because he.
And last week I went and it was it was Father's Day in Australia which I'd forgotten.
And he came through and it was literally like I'd gone out for lunch with him and had a lunch
with him and we had a laugh.
And this woman was just relaying stuff to me that made no sense to her, made complete
sense to me.
And I thought, what an incredible feeling for the people that believe in this and listen.
And we're getting so many stories from people that is just similar to what I'm saying.
They're saying, I believe that my late husband led me to you.
and here's the signs.
And it's magical.
It's literally magical.
Like, I feel like life is just that little bit more magic now, doing the podcast.
How wonderful.
Yeah.
How wonderful.
And for you, then, you know, you were just saying all the things.
But is it the spirituality?
I mean, you both said that you started off with the tarot readings.
But now what for you?
Now I do think it's leading on.
I do think the mediumship was something that I always steered against
because I didn't really want to, it kind of, I'm interested in history and ghosts.
and all of that stuff and the ghoulish.
But at the same time, I would have been scared thinking,
oh my God, they're going to haunt me.
There's people, you know, that would have freaked me out in the past.
But now I feel comforted by it.
And actually, the first medium I saw was a woman in Shepherd's Bush years ago
that you got me as a present.
And I didn't know she was going to be a medium.
And she suddenly started doing this with her eyes.
And she was watching my grandma who had dementia run across the room
because that's what she used to do would sort of lose her quite a lot of the time.
Wow.
And then a friend of mine, Pete, had died very suddenly.
And he came into that read straight away and actually told me things, you know, that was astounding to me.
So that was a start of it all.
But it's not just speaking to dead people.
It's about the future and the sort of the I met a crossroads in my life, career, love, family, home.
All of the things that I feel have been sorted in my past are suddenly unearthed and open.
And I feel as though this is also bringing me on Helen on a sort of spiritual journey in a sort of working out the order of life through
spirituality as well and the next steps. And I do feel as though I'm I'm finding a map in my life
through all of this stuff that we're talking about and channeling at the moment. It's really
helping me in a time when I kind of, you know, don't know what to do. Do you know what to mean?
It's sort of giving me complete reassurance. And you're telepathy. Oh, yes, and telepathy.
She's really like, I'm really fascinated because I listened to a podcast, which was about non-verbal
autistic children who could communicate with their caregiver through typing, you know, and they did
experiments. The parent would be or the caregiver in another room and the child would type out
what the parent was being presented like a held up picture, like a butterfly or whatever.
And it's all sort of the idea that people can communicate outside of their bodies. And because we
both meditate as well, a lot of telepathy is said to come through meditation. So we've been setting
ourselves challenges on our podcast. The first one, which we've just completed, was that a vet would
hold something in her hand when she meditated, and I would, when I meditated, try and understand
what it was. And actually, I was kind of not far off. I thought it was an amethyst with silver
class or sort of like, you know, a pendulum or something. But it was a necklace that was amethyst in
colour. It was an islandite. It was a different stone. Different stone, but with metal, you know,
on a necklace with metal cross and stuff. So I feel as there was a necklace that was an necklace. So I feel as
they were starting the telepathy journey together, which is, I mean, people must think we're
absolutely crazy. No, no. Do you care? No, because I think what's interesting is that there's a
movement at the moment. I feel as though there is a sort of, you know, practical magic being remade,
and you go into every high street store now, and you can buy tarot cards and W.H. Smith and
waterstones. But people will misuse that, which worries me. Yes. But the fact that there is
a movement and people are becoming more aware.
It can only be a good thing.
It can only, if it's a positive, you know, as with any movement or religion, you know,
it has to be positive, even Transcendental Meditation, which I adore, you know, in that
I saw bad eggs, you know, that took that too far.
Of course, but there are everywhere.
It's interesting you keep saying religion.
I'm quite thrown that you keep using the word religion.
So to you, is this like a religion?
I guess it's a really good question.
and I don't even know I'm doing it.
I think it's, no, I don't think, can I suggest?
I don't think we do see it as a religion at all actually.
But I think it's the way that we can talk about it
is an extra thing that someone has in their life as they would a faith, a religion.
I think faith is a better word, more of a faith.
And I grew up a Catholic.
So I think, you know, in my head, that was my belief system.
And then I shifted it.
And this is what I believe in.
So I guess to me, that's, I go, well, if people have a religious belief system,
they may not necessarily believe in, you know, speaking to mediums and, you know.
But there's a spiritual, there's, you know, spiritualization within all religions.
We can agree on that.
And especially with the sort of the Hinduism and Buddhist realm of possibilities as well.
You know, meditation comes through those practices, yoga.
mindfulness. So I think there is a connection, but there's a very clear divide, you know. And
do I necessarily believe in a God? No, I don't think I do. Do I believe in an energy? Yes,
I do. Do I believe in an intuition, which I'm learning to sit in now? Yes. And doesn't everybody
have it? We have it. We don't know how to access it. We don't know how to listen to it.
We're blocked from it. Evette always says, particularly in my love life, I did try and tell you.
because she has such strong intuition.
And I know that she's always right.
But everything she says,
I will always do the opposite and end up making some big mistakes.
But now I'm really trying to sit into my intuition because I think...
That's amazing.
We bloody know, don't we?
We do.
We absolutely do.
And people always say women know.
I think men know as well.
It's the fear of feeling.
Of accessing that, yeah.
So there's mystic mates.
People can get it on all podcast streaming platforms.
And where is the little cynicism person?
Where's the person that says, come, or I'm going to have to do it, even though I'm a believer.
Okay.
Come on, it doesn't happen.
Yeah.
Okay, I'm doing it.
I'm pretending.
This is my, okay.
Absolutely.
All right.
My name is Jennifer.
Jennifer.
Right.
Jennifer.
All right.
Jennifer.
Why don't you believe this stuff?
Kate.
All right.
I don't believe you.
And what don't you believe?
Doesn't happen.
But there could be a possibility.
No.
Have you ever had any interest in tarot cards?
Would you ever do a tarot reading?
No.
Definitely not.
No.
So if I had a pack of tarot cards here and you just wanted me to call one card out,
just asking about your husband or your partner or you don't want to know.
Don't want to know.
Or whether you're going to be a millionaire.
Would you want to know that?
Oh yeah.
I want to.
Oh, okay.
There we go.
There's a magician.
But it's interesting.
There are people who just close off to it.
And what I wonder is, is that fear?
I think it's fear.
But I think also we live in, I think, call the.
Midwife is a really good example of this because you live in the nuns have the faith and the guide
of God to make decisions, whereas my character and midwife makes scientific decisions based on facts
and what she can see in the evidence. And I think it's that dichotomy all the time. You know,
we're led to think, not to feel. Not to feel. And I know in America, they say, well, I feel like
this. But we've always been, I was brought up to say, well, I think this, you know, and there's a
difference in that as well. And I think even though people are.
are sceptic and I'm from a family maybe of skeptics, people are always interested. They want to
hear the stories because the stories are good. I think they want to believe. I think that people
want to believe but are too frightened and also want proof. So it's like, you know, scientific
proof. I want the proof. Okay, there's a glass. If you told me there was a glass and I didn't
see a glass, then there's no glass. Do you know what I mean? It's as, yes. And it's okay to not
want to believe it as well. Like we don't want to, we only want to bring people to our podcast
that want to be on the journey with us because you can't, I don't want to be shoving it in everyone's
face. No, I just go, here we are. This is what, you know, do you want to have a listen?
Because this is what we believe. But they can listen and then maybe they'll begin to understand
and believe and think. Yeah. It's been so lovely talking to you both. Yeah, really lovely. Thank you so
much. And thank you for being so honest and open. We always ask everybody to bring along something that
brings them true joy. Now, I think we've gathered from Helen. I think we have to go first with
Helen, if that's okay, vet, because you just said, for your late partner. Yeah, the guy that I did
passed. The last time I saw him before he went off to treatment, we parted our ways before he
went off to treatment, which I was very sad about at the time. And I gave him a rose quartz
for healing. And whenever someone's going through something, I tend to do that. Lovely. And a few weeks ago,
I had a medium who I saw at a church in Fulham, a psychic church.
And she did a reading and he came through and said some very pronounced things to me that were very factual and true.
And then nobody would have known.
No.
And I then found her, tracked her down, like Nancy Drew, and invited her to my house.
And she came and read for me in my dining room.
And she said, he wants to give you a rose quartz.
Why is he giving you a rose quartz?
And I went, well, that's the last thing I gave to him.
And that's how I know it's him.
Cut to three days later, it was the eclipse that Wednesday,
and on the doorstep was left a rose quartz.
So whatever you decide to believe from that.
You don't mind me holding it?
No.
I'm not jealous with my crystals.
I know some people don't like.
No, I'm fine.
And I just, whether you believe or not, whether I believe or not,
it doesn't matter because just that very act of that synergy makes me have belief and hope
in a situation.
I have to ask, how do you think it got there?
I don't know.
I ask the same question.
And I don't have a ring doorbell, but my neighbour does,
and I'm a little bit scared to ask because he'll think that I'm completely nutty.
But you carry that now with you everywhere, don't you?
And the point is...
The energy that you'll get from that is something special, and it's helping you.
It's helping you.
Whoever put it there has given you something really positive.
You know, I don't know who it was, but we've also got, this was from our Mystic Mait's launch.
We did these lovely cards.
And this is, we gave out crystals to everybody, mainly because we were told that amethysts stop hangovers.
So whenever we go out now, we take an amethyst.
But we also had rose quartz.
So we wanted to give that to you because it's known for healing and peace.
I love rose quartz.
It's my favourite, favourite.
Is it?
That's absolutely true.
Oh, Gaffy.
I feel a bit emotional.
So do I.
Thank you.
Is that really for me?
Yes.
Thank you so much.
It's the crystal I carry in my bag.
Oh, my gosh.
rose quartz with me everywhere I go.
Do you?
Oh, that's really nice.
In your bag, not your bra, because some people keep them in the bra, but I'm so rough.
The bag is much more sensible.
Oh, my goodness.
Thank you very much.
That's really, really, really, really, really kind of you.
Thank you very much.
I want to keep it on the card.
Yeah, I kept mine on my card.
I have it up in my room.
Thank you.
That's really, that's, wow.
Ah, Yvette.
Thank you, both of you.
We always end up crying when we talk about this stuff.
Yeah, it's a lot.
I have bought my runes because this is something I had in Australia
and it's gone all around the world with me.
And so these are about, I'd say I got them, you know, 30 years ago,
someone passed these down to me.
And this old tattie bag has gone into every little dressing room of mine.
How lovely.
And when I meet a cast, I always ask them to draw a run and they draw a run and I look it up.
And this is how we met with my run.
Oh, was it?
Yeah, this is it.
And this is the original card.
And here they have all the meanings.
And they're really hard to come by now, actually.
No, they're not.
They're selling them in waterstones.
Oh, well, the proper ones.
The old school ones.
But I've made a lot of friends, and I've introduced a lot of people.
Actually, someone messaged me the other day from when I did Mamma Mia.
And I didn't even know, but she said, Yvette, you're the reason that I am on my spiritual journey now.
And it was because you pulled a room for me.
And I don't know if you saw that message from Michelle.
And I forgot.
And I just thought.
What a lovely thing.
And they sit in my house and my daughter now does them.
Oh, how amazing.
They're really special.
And they're from, because they're from Australia.
Let's have a look.
So explain what runes are for people who don't know.
So it's a little bit like tarot cards, but it's a much older.
It's one of the most ancient forms.
And you put your hand in and you feel the stone, whichever one you're drawn to.
Shall I do?
Yes.
And you can do a three cut, a three stone or one stone.
You could just think of something now and do it one.
stone and you pull it out and you put it on the table.
Take your time.
Okay.
There.
Shall I turn it over?
Turn it over.
Okay.
I'm going to just take this one.
I like this one.
I can't remember the name, but I remember what it means in my head.
So this is called separation.
This is what the stone.
Now, these are quite like, don't ever feel, sometimes people hear the word and go, oh my gosh,
that's really negative and it's actually not.
And you can do them reversed or not.
So this is about retreat.
This is a time of separating paths.
Old skins must be shed out mode of relationships discarded.
When you receive this ruin, a peeling away is called for part of the cycle of initiation.
Athelia is a ruin of radical severance.
So the appropriate action here is submission and quite possibly retreat, knowing how and when to retreat,
and possessing the firmness of will to carry it out.
Real property is associated with Athelia, for it is the ruin of acquisition and benefits.
However, the benefits you receive, the inheritance may be derived in something you must give up.
Oh, my words.
Yes.
There's nothing in my mind at the moment that I'm actually feeling touch.
There we can touch wood really in a good place.
So you must look closely at what until now you've proudly claimed as your birthright.
Whether is it your attachment.
My birthright.
Yeah.
Whether it's quite old writing.
So you have to really try and, you know, I don't know how we translate it into a
modern way. Yeah, yeah, no, no. Whether it's your attachment to your position in society,
to the work you do, or even to your beliefs about your own nature, the separation call for
will free you to become more truly who you are. Maybe you need a holiday. I've just come
back. I got back yesterday. Did you? Had a week off. Maybe you need another one. Maybe that's
what it is. So it'll be interesting. There might be something that will come up and you'll be like,
well, that was an interesting room. And actually, we've done it before at parties and things where
we'll read for someone else. We've got, vets has got Chinese sticks, which is quite similar. And
it's a long paragraph.
But we've done it for couples in the past with both present.
And it's basically just saying severance, severance.
And you're like, I'm just going to ad lib all of this ancient problem whilst drunk.
Oh, my word.
Definitely done that.
But it's wonderful that it's, it's, these have helped you.
Yeah.
They've helped other people.
And that you two, if you don't mind me saying, you are obviously helping one another.
You are there.
You are friends for a reason.
Yeah.
We are.
And I said that yesterday.
when we watch practical magic, I said to vets, because they say that they want to die on the same day.
And I was like, babe, can we just die on the same day?
Because I don't think I can do life with that.
Well, you've got a long way to go, a long, long way.
Thank you both for being on.
Thank you for my crystal.
That's really pleasure.
Very, very special.
Thank you so much.
Thank you.
