For your Friday extra nugget of joy, your show and tell with Laura Checkley, I was try,
I was trying to guess what somebody's going to bring in the thing that brings them joy.
I think a couple of times I've guessed right.
Most times I've never guessed.
Right.
Okay.
You know, you did say in the first episode that you wanted to bring along your carcher.
Yeah.
My window cleaner kercher.
And you imagine bringing that on the tube.
I love that.
Okay.
It brings me so much joy though.
So, do I just tell you now?
Yes, please.
So, you can reveal it.
Well, it's just my nann's wedding ring.
Oh!
And it's not even that fancy.
It's a wedding ring?
Yeah, well, my mum had it for years.
It's just, there it is, just a band.
It's not even that.
My mum had it for years when my nan died.
But my nan was my hero.
And here's the thing you need to know about it.
I lose everything.
I lose every bit of jewelry anyone's ever got me I've lost.
This is not, this is a replacement engagement.
ring because I lost my engagement ring on a Brighton beach.
You are kidding me?
No, I'm not kidding you.
So when my mum gave me this and said I'd really like to give you your nans ring to get
married, do not lose this Laura and the look in her eye.
And so I'm terrified, terrified of losing it.
And my nan was my hero.
She's hugely funny.
She's definitely where I get my funny bones from.
She was like hilarious.
Winnie.
Winnie.
Winnie Morris.
Yeah.
And she, and I looked down at that and I, you know,
Yeah, I feel her.
I'm not hugely spiritual, but I feel her,
and she's in nearly every character I do.
She's a lot of Terry.
If people go, what were your nan like?
What was your nan like?
I was like, what's your nan like?
I was like, what's your character?
She's a bit like Terry.
We're mess with her.
And really funny and silly and clowny
and great, great character.
And like, hugely missed.
So when mum gave you that, obviously, brought miles up,
but I'm now terrified of losing it.
You won't lose it.
I don't think I will.
I don't think I will.
I can't.
It's under your engagement.
Yes, under that.
New engagement ring.
My new engagement ring, yeah.
So how long ago did she die then?
My nan died in 2007.
Oh, right.
Oh, wow ago.
Yeah, yeah, long while ago.
But she was a matriarch.
And I grew up with a lot of women, strong, funny women.
You surprised me, really?
Yeah, yeah.
She was hilarious, hilarious and brilliant.
And she used to vote Greenpeace.
And I just loved everything about her,
mostly because they did a lot for her bins.
but she
Yeah, she was an incredible woman
And so when I looked down every day
That brings me a lot of joy
I was going to bring in other things
But I love that
That's really personal
And also, like you said at the very beginning
You never thought you'd get married
No
And there's you and Claire married
And also I didn't ever come out to her
She never knew I was gay
Oh she didn't know
No so I feel like this kind of
She, you know what
She would be so proud of you
Oh she would yeah
So proud of everything
She'd also take credit for her
as well.
Gets it from me.
Yeah, yeah.
Oh, I love that.
Yeah, yeah.
Oh, she said that all the time.
She saw me on stage twice before she died,
so I just graduated from drama school.
She saw me in a couple of musicals.
But yeah, she always used to get it from me, kiddo, didn't you?
But she was wonderful.
I'd be upstairs, and I'd be sort of playing, you know,
on my own and creating characters,
and she'd come up and go, what you're up to, girl?
And I'd be like, oh, no, nothing.
She'd, do you want some hats and some handbags and some clothes
just to, and she'd just to, and she'd just,
sort of, yeah, feed into that. And she was just, yeah, joyful and
brilliant and, yeah, wonderful. You used the perfect
word. A hero. She was joyful. She was. And your hero. Oh, how lovely. You are, honestly, I know
you say about your wife, Claire, that she's sunshine personified. So are you. And please don't
ever forget that. I think she's rubbing off on me. Oh, oh, you like that anyway.
Oh, thank you. So are you, Gabby. Thank you.
